Brazil, Morocco and Paraguay, their fans were made to sweat though. We've had two penalty shootouts and a last minute winner. 10 out of 10, no notes, an unbelievable day of football. Let's see what day 20 has in store for us. This is your ultimate guide to the World Cup.
0:27Yes, we did celebrate yesterday's incredible day of football with Waffle House. How could we not? Hello and welcome to Morning Cup Date, built by the Home Depot. The Home Depot is your winning assist to host the ultimate watch party with fast free delivery to get your backyard match day ready. Subject to availability, we have got to start off with the late kick-off and it is the Netherlands against Morocco. It's like, bye! Morocco's moment once again. A dramatic penalty shootout. Some brilliant goals, big tackles and some big old saves as well. This match had absolutely everything and it ended with that Ismail Saibari winning penalty for Morocco.
1:08It was a bit of a strange shootout that saw Crescensio Somerville, Quintin Timber and Justin Cliver miss their spot kicks for the Netherlands. Here are the Morocco fans taking over Montreux's macro plaza, celebrating the win.
1:26In a day stacked with big hitters, this game was arguably the title card. It was tense, it was thrilling, and it was locked in at 0-0 until late into the second half before an emotional Cody Gakpo broke the deadlock in the 72nd minute. It was a pretty beautiful moment when the Liverpool striker, whose partner announced the loss of their unborn son on Saturday, fell to the floor with emotion after his goal and his teammates immediately surrounded him. Morocco equalised when Fulham's Issa Diop headed home dramatically in the 91st minute to take the game eventually to penalties. And this wasn't the only dramatic penalty shootout of the day, everybody.
2:04Surely this time for Paraguay, he does score! Paraguay's most powerful World Cup results in their history. Oh, we've been spoiled, haven't we? Paraguay are through, beating Germany on penalties. Yep, the full-time world champions are out. There was a time where you would have bet your house on Germany winning a World Cup, but those days are over. I hope nobody bet their house on Germany winning the World Cup. Before today, they'd never lost a World Cup shootout, but here are the scenes in Paraguay as Jose Canale slotted home the decisive spot kick.
2:47Paraguay are competing in their first World Cup since 2010, but they didn't have the best start here. They finished third in Group D and it feels like a very long time ago, doesn't it, that they lost their opening match 4-1 to the USMNT. Julio and CISO headed Paraguay into a shock lead in the 42nd minute, but Germany turned it on after the break, leading to a Kai Havertz equaliser. They then thought they'd wrapped it up with a Jonathan Tarr goal in extra time, but that one was controversially disallowed by VAR. So off it went to pens. Despite Paraguay's good start, it went to sudden death as well.
3:21And it was a miss from Jonathan Tarr all the way into Rosehead that teed up that perfect ending for Paraguay.
3:36The country will enjoy a national holiday tomorrow to celebrate and they deserve it. And a tasty one against the winner of either France or Sweden awaits. But it does mean the end of the road for German fan Freddie, who simply posted the heartbroken emoji after the game. Poor old Freddie. And to kick the day off, it was five-time champions Brazil against a hotly-tipped Japan in Houston. It was a classic World Cup match-up. We had the flair of Brazil against the clinical counter-attacking Japan. And it was the Samurai Blues who opened the scoring. It's been won back by Sano, and now he's motoring past Casemiro.
4:12And he's got options left and right. He goes for goal instead and gets it. Quick, sharp, incisive and often deadly. Brazil responded with a Casemiro header in the 56th minute. Shout out, though, to Japan keeper Zion Suzuki, who pulled off a string of incredible saves, including an acrobatic stop to deny Vinicius Junior what would have been one of the goals of the tournament. The game looks set for extra time until this. Gabriel Martinelli popping up in the dying seconds.
4:55Complete and utter heartbreak for the Samurai Blue Even though they leave the tournament earlier than they would have liked They have been firm World Cup favourites And their fans will leave with the memories to last a lifetime Memory infinity And there were touching scenes after the match of Brazilian fans consoling Japan fans.
5:25But, of course, as you can imagine, it was pure elation for Brazil. Here were the scenes in Rio de Janeiro.
5:39And with that, Brazil will play either Norway or the Ivory Coast in the last 16. Wow, what a day. And breathe. We're on a roll now when it comes to the knockout games. Another three on the way today and we'll begin with a co-host Mexico who take on Ecuador at 9pm Eastern. Could we see more scenes like this?
6:04what an atmosphere it is going to be in mexico city as the co-hosts take on ecuador who are one of the best supported nations at this tournament mexico breezed through group a with three wins from three and not a single goal conceded quite the record isn't it meanwhile ecuador got through after a 2-1 win over germany in the final group match come on we've got to hear that ecuadorian commentator again, haven't we?
6:38This is not a match where you should expect too many goals. These are two teams that are both pretty impressive defensively, but both lack quite a bit going forward. For Mexico, the biggest challenge may be a mental one, as they've not won a knockout game in the World Cup in 40 years. Here's Herc Gomez on the challenge of breaking four decades of pain. Mexico wants to win their first knockout game in, what, 40 years? To do so, they've got to defend well, like they've done all tournament. Three group stage games, three zeros at the back. They do that in Estadio Azteca with their people, and the likes of Julian Quiñones and teenage sensation Gilberto Mora.
7:14They will take care of the rest. But you've got to defend and defend well versus Ecuador. You can catch more from Herc on the VAMOS network, where he and Sebi Salazar will have instant reaction following the game. Now, the good news for Mexico fans is that they are undefeated in nine consecutive World Cup games at Mexico City. We know that. Brilliant home record. Fans are doing everything, though, that they can to give their team even more of an advantage, including standing outside Ecuador's hotel. Oh,
7:47I really do hope that the Ecuador players have some earplugs. I've got some, I can send them over. The early match takes place in Dallas at 1pm Eastern as the Ivory Coast play Norway. The Norwegian fans have lit up the tournament and the row is the craze that has truly gone global. I mean, it's been seen at the Players' Championship. Row! Row! Row! Row! Row! On offshore oil platforms. Row! Row! Row! Row! Row! And even at retirement homes.
8:30Today, though, the row comes to Texas. And if by the end of the day there aren't a bunch of fans doing the row in cowboy hats, I'm going to be very disappointed. Norway came second in their group after their second string team lost heavily to France. And that decision to rest the majority of their starting line-up is the focus of today's drilldown.
8:52Today's Drilldown brought to you by Makita is all about where the Norweys' decision to make 10 changes in their final group game will be a help or a hindrance to their dreams of going far. Now, due to the fact that FIFA has had to include third-place teams into the knockouts, scheduling the round of 32 games has been quite difficult in terms of making sure that each team has an equal amount of rest between matches. However, in many cases, that hasn't been possible. In this particular game, Ivory Coast played five days ago, while Norway only four. But by the virtue of winning their first two group matches, the Norwegians beat the system and nearly all of the players that you will see today will have had eight days recovery.
9:32One of those is Erling Haaland and his strengths are pretty obvious. I don't know. I think it's my speciality to score goals. It's like many other things. I'm just really good at scoring goals. Oh, he's not bad, is he? Four and two games for him so far, by the way. Keeping him quiet is a massive struggle for any defence. But in the case of Ivory Coast, they've changed their centre-backs more times than Fox viewers changed channels during a hydration break. Wilfred Singo and Emmanuel Agbedou were the starting centre-backs in their opening match against Ecuador. But Singo picked up a hamstring injury and Agbedou was dropped after a poor performance against Germany.
10:08It is very fortunate that the Ivory Coast have some pretty extraordinary depth in this position, with both Ousmane Diamande and Odilon Kusinu both very highly rated. At the other end, Ivory Coast's Danger Man is definitely winger Jan Diamande, 19 years old, and he's got clubs like PSG and Liverpool keeping an eye on him. And as the world arrives in the United States for the biggest spectacle in sports, We're going coast to coast, host city to host city to meet the world with the Men in Blazers Match Day Live Tour. These are free college game day style live events taking place just before kickoff at some of the biggest games of the summer where we'll be taking the stage with celebrity guests in front of thousands of fans.

11:40Attention will turn to New Jersey later in the day as France plays Sweden. Now the French have been electric at the tournament. So good in fact that they apparently don't need to bother training anymore. Centre-backs Max Lacroix has been spending his time learning how to be a coffee barista. Cappuccino, latte, double espresso, espresso, chalate, tout ce que vous voulez.
12:30It was Anthony Alanga who scored that brilliant goal to rescue a draw against Japan, but after the final whistle he was seen beating the ground in frustration. Graham Potter thought it was because Anthony didn't know that a draw was going to send them through, that it would be enough to send them through. But yesterday Anthony told the BBC why he was so vexed. I knew he was qualified. I knew he was qualified, but I just wanted to win the game because I'm a winner and I wanted to score more goals. Do you believe him? I'm not so sure. Didier Deschamps will be back in the dugout after a brief return home after the death of his mother.
13:03He will be hoping that he can call on centre-back William Saliba, who missed the match against Norway with a back injury. Centre-back Isaac Hian will be absent for Sweden after picking up a hamstring injury against Japan. Now, the winner of this match will face Paraguay in the next round, which, as we found out last night, it's not going to be easy. As always, remember to check in with the Night Cup after the France-Sweden game. Roger Rory with special guest actor and comedian Keegan-Michael Key joining them. Now, it is time for predictions against the Night Cup. Yesterday, I took on producer Kippo, who I can say is in this room with his head in his hands.
13:41In the first game of the day, it was an exact score for Morning Cup Day as I went for a 2-1 Brazil win. Come on, Bessie! Bring it back! So it was a mountain to climb for the Night Cup and Kippo in the final game of the day. And there were no exact scores for either of us there. So it means that it's a win for Morning Cup. Eight, eight, eight, eight, five to the Night Cup. Now the comeback is on. Today I took on Rory. Okay, Rory, prediction time. Yes. We're going to do Norway against the Ivory Coast. I'm going to go two, one to Norway. What are you saying? I think this will be a really, really, really tight game.
14:16Both really good teams. I think the Ivorians have been kind of the underrated side coming into the tournament. But Norway do have all that firepower up front, the big physical strength. You say 2-1 Norway? 3-1 Norway. Oh, they've had eight days off pretty much, haven't they, the starting 11? They'll be fresh, they'll be rested, they'll be a little bit bored, they'll be ready to play football. OK, nice. And Mexico, Ecuador, I'm going to go 1-0 Mexico. Ecuador have got a good defence, but Mexico on home turf. Ecuador can't store goals, but they are not going to be affected at all by the altitude because Ecuador is also quite high up, which I think negates one of Mexico's big advantages.
14:52I think Ecuador looked amazing against Germany. You are right. They don't have a striker. It's still Lennon Valencia. He's about 90. But I think they will win this on penalties after a one-all draw. Oh, okay, fine. Nice to do business with you, sir. Happy to be here.
15:11Today's finishing touch brought to you by Bear Payne is all about Mauricio Pochettino's eye-catching outfit and how it inspired one of the world's greatest ever strikers. Now, Poch, of course, has worn an open-buttoned navy blue shirt with a white T-shirt underneath, crisp white, may I add, for all three of the USMNT's games so far. Classy but nonchalant, I'd say. During their opener against Paraguay, it caught the eye of former England forward Wayne Rooney while he was covering the game for the BBC. I love his look, I love his clothes. It's a shame I can't get his hair, but I can maybe get his clothes.
15:44We can definitely find out his outfit. Potch has responded while being interviewed by The Times, saying, when we come back to London, I will contact him and send him my outfit, before joking, I need to know his size there. However, Mauricio, you don't need to bother, because Wayne was straight on the case and he displayed his new Potch look during the weekend's football coverage. I liked that much, I went out and bought it from... What, the exact same thing? We know that Mauricio was rumoured to be speaking to Milan, before the tournament started. We all assumed it was the football club, but maybe he was just being lined up for Fashion Week.
16:19That is it for Morning Cup Date today, built by The Home Depot. The Home Depot is your winning assist to host the ultimate watch party with fast free delivery to get your backyard match day ready, subject to availability. Now, before I go, we got a lot of comments in yesterday's show on YouTube telling me that I need to eat some ranch sauce. So, everybody, your wish is my command. Kippo, thank you very much. The glamorous assistant. The glamorous assistant because he lost the predictions. Let me have a go. I've got a pretzel, sticking it in. Oh, it's very pungent, isn't it? A lot going on there.
16:58I think maybe on like pizza, I can see. Possibly. Um, I'd say out of 10, probably eight out of 10. I can see it's good, it's good. It's maybe not as good as you're making it out to be, but it's good. anyway guys keep keep those comments coming i'll shout out some of the best ones as well um but tune in later today i've got pretzel coming out my mouth tune in later today for the second official men in blazers watch along presented by google roger rory and guest host rex and humphrey kerr will be live on twitch during france against sweden as your second screen friends they'll be joined by italy's iconic striker super mario balatelli and captain of the US women's team, the incredible Lindsay Heaps.
17:37The link for that is in the notes below and also remember that Herc and Sebi of... I feel like I need a hydration break. Herc and Sebi of Jewel Nats will be doing a live post-game reaction to Mexico against Ecuador. So check that out as well on the Vamos channel. We'll be back tomorrow. I'm going to have more ranch. We'll see you then.
18:08Thank you.
