In short

Live post-match breakdown of the USMNT’s 0-2 friendly loss to South Korea in New Jersey, framed as a worrying sign ahead of the 2026 World Cup on home soil. Hosts discuss tactics (Korea’s pressing/counters), squad selection confusion, and the team’s lack of chance creation and clinical finishing.

Guest backgrounds

Clint Dempsey (former USMNT captain; 142 caps, record US goals; World Cup-winning-era star) joins as the main guest for analysis and fan Q&A.

Key claims

The US looked disorganized and “shambles” defensively, especially versus Korea’s pace and counterattacks; the midfield lacked creativity; set pieces weren’t dangerous; Josh Sargent’s national-team scoring drought continues despite club success. The episode criticizes not starting/using certain first-choice players and says Pochettino’s system/identity isn’t clearly communicated.

Notable examples

Korea’s first goal via give-and-go and half-turn play; second goal finished by Son after US center-back spacing errors. Mentions Pulisic and Dest returning, Balogun’s impact off the bench, and concerns about goalkeeper/center-back/No.9 uncertainty.

00It's Rog, here to sing my praise for a very special New Balance football boot, the 442. It's no-nonsense, workhorse midfielders and defenders, the ones who do the dirty work, but also ping a pass to perfection. It's a classic boot design with modern enhancements, with an ultra-lightweight sole, synthetic microfibre material, retains a soft premium in-hand feel, allowing for the lighter weight, the superior touch on the ball. 1:39South Korea, Bong Joon-ho, BTS, New Jeans just turned the US men's national team into Bibimbap. Tonight, we recoil after a 2-0 beatdown in New Jersey, in which the United States essentially lived out their own personal squid games. The US player, I do believe, who stopped Rosa most tonight, probably Weston McKinney. For those who love the US team, we're all left crying in H-Mart. It is, it's painful to think that there's less than a year to go before the World Cup of our dreams on home turf. This is the first of 10 games before that tournament, and it was hard to watch. Proof of the old sports truism that everyone's got to plan until they have to play a non-conquered calf nation that knows how to press and they punch you in the mouth.

31We're going to break it down tonight. Take your questions live on this live taping of the Deuce with a man who won a record 142 caps, record number of goals to become the trusted voice the fans need through good times and not so good ones. It's a joy to welcome, even on this night, for a live taping of the Deuce, the pride of Nagadoches, the Bass Assassin, My friend, it's Mr. Clint Dempsey. What's up, Raj? How's it going? Oh, Clint, it's so good to hear your voice. Describe your mood after watching this one. To be honest with you, I feel like Bill Murray in Groundhog's Day. I feel like we're always coming and trying to talk about something positive.

13It's hard to find. As we were talking about earlier, if this team had to qualify for the World Cup, I don't know if they would get the job done. So it's a good thing that we already got an automatic bid in. And yeah, man, really not a lot of positives to talk about tonight. Let's try and find some positives. Because the mood in the chat right now, looking at it flick up, it's not that optimistic. Nicole Fisher says, just yikes, James Pennington. I'd rather be at the proctologist. Brad Milkey says, I fear we're dangerously close to a 12-man. What are we doing, Rant? Um, we've got ourselves a good old-fashioned misery hang.

57It is good to be with you. Just to remind you how this works, it's a Do It Live. You can come on stage, have your say, be part of the show, ask Clint whatever you want to ask. Just scan the QR code in the top left of your screen, bring you into a Zoom with our producer Tony, that magnificent human being, who'll get you up in one moment to have your say. Whatever you want to say tonight, let it out. Come be with us. If you want to get it out quicker, get in the chat. We'll read the best comments. Give us a like, subscribe to this channel. Give us a hug. Clint and I are headed to Columbus Monday night for a live taping of the juice in the city, which is really the soul of football in our nation.

38I can't wait to be with you, Clint. I can't wait to celebrate with those fans. Columbus, Clint, it's really been a city that's lifted this team when we need it. We need it, right? Yeah, I mean, when you think about World Cup qualifying and big games that we had there and must-win situations. It was a city that was always what was great to us. And to your point, we need something to get us back on track, something to get us positive again and trying to believe towards as we get closer to this World Cup. But man, I'm really at a lost words. Coming up a pint with Clint and me, many pints. We'll be there with the great Herc Gomez, Wilfred Nancy, and the iconic Frankie Hayduck.

21friend of Clint Dempsey, great friend of mine. It's going to be whatever. It'll be a joyous night of football before the US take on Japan. Come and be with us, Columbus. There's about 10 tickets available. We'll pop the link in this chat to buy them. Come be with us. Also, the US men's national team Discord on the Men in Blazers Discord has been, I've got to say, beautiful tonight. Come join us. We're also putting a link in that, however you're listening to it. There's so many great conversations going on in that safe, wonderful MIB Discord. I do love it. Football is better. Friends, come be with us.

57We do have one positive comment in the chat. 168HD says, always a pleasure to be with Mr. Dempsey, my US men's national team goat. There we go. Let's have a drink because we need it. We need many. And I do love Chip Wankwaston saying, there's one very confused LA politician right now. Clint, we're going to break the game down. let's go back to the beginning this was really we knew it was a mannequin strikes back squad for Mauricio tonight I've always been so excited for US Men's National Team Game Day before kickoff today I think I texted you I feel a lot of apprehension the bad run of games the bad sense of momentum has a friendly ever felt more like a must win than tonight?

44Yeah I mean they do feel like must wins because we need to get this fan base inspired. You talk about attendance again at this game. I think it was 80 % or 75 % for South Korea. You're confused by not bringing in all of your best players who are available to you. You're confused by not starting all your best players. I don't understand why Chris Richards didn't start tonight. If anything, you're trying to find, if it's not Tim Ream, that next guy up that's going to fill his shoes to be in that center back pairing. You're still trying to figure out the goalkeeping situation. Still can't understand why Sargent, it's been three years since he's scored for the U.S.

22men's national team, but he's able to do in the championship with Norwich week in and week out. And, you know, you got Bolligan back, which was a positive, got Des back, which is a positive, but there's not a lot of positives from tonight. And you talk about that back line, they were exposed with the pace of South Korea and how they got behind them. And even on the second goal, that player being able to get on the half turn and then find and Son, who does a give and go around team, and Tim Ream, and it just, it was shambles. Shambles, God bless. I mean, you just mentioned Desk back. That was a joy going forward.

58Christian Pulisic also back after all the noise. Great to have him back to the squad, which was different. This squad was a little confusing. It's like half human, half goat, half January camp, half real deal. Starting line-up, Pulisic back, Serge back for the first time under pocket. Now, Josh Sargent not chosen for the Gold Cup, but he scored his way back to number nine. Thomas Muller's favourite, 29-year-old Tristan Blackman, made his debut. It was weird. Right side, European players, MLS up and down the left flank. And we knew the Koreans as some opponent qualified for the World Cup, organised, fit, disciplined.

38Clint, we'd seen us get absolutely battered by Turkey A and Switzerland before the Gold Cup. But when we play these mid-level opponents, it has rocked us in the past. So I was a little afraid. And from the outset, I mean, first of all, the press from the career was too much for us. From the off, I was relieved. We weathered the storm early. Tyler Adams seemed to just at all means necessary try and repel it. But then Korea sat back, gave us the chance to attack. I was like screaming at the television, it's a trap. I mean, we felt good in possession. Dest looked hungry. We pinged it around a little bit, but the second they could get us, triggering the counter, we'd committed so many players forward, left our centre-backs wide open, Song Hung Min, lost Tristan Blackman, totally switched off, charged in on goal, lashed past Harvard Donnarumma, Matt Freeze, with his left foot into the corner.

35Clint, it was so simple to watch them on the counter. And I've got to say, Mauricio Pochettino, he's always known how to get the best out of Sonny. Yeah, that's true, right? He's always getting goals for him. Oh, man. Nothing's changed. Nothing's changed. He's still doing it. What I will say, I mean, to your point, I mean, South Korea was there for the take and I didn't think they were, they didn't play that well with their back line. There were some chances that we could have been clinical on. When they played out the back and we, yeah, so bloody, I mean, like drunk playing out the back was what it was.

13So you're right, we did have Berhalter that chance early. Yeah, but to your point, it seemed like they were playing for the counter. They did expose the lack of pace that we had on our back line. And once they got the second goal, it looked just like we were cooked, right? It was all a wrap. But, I mean, there was a few bright spots in the second half. But, man, we were talking about it during the game. There's just not a clear-cut way in which we attack and we create chances. and, man, just not creative enough in the midfield as well. I mean, I think it's difficult to play Berhalter and Adams together.

50They're kind of similar. They break up plays and play simple, maybe missing some creativity there or more of a box-to-box midfielder like McKinney for some reason not brought in. But I don't know what's going on. I don't know the thought process of why you bring in certain players and not others. but I would always want to have my best players in, especially with not a lot of meaningful games left as we build towards the World Cup and try to play those best players and really just looking for a little bit of depth or who's that extra player that comes into the team as continuing just a huge project like it looks like it still is tonight.

27Yeah, I mean, God, that first goal, I honestly, I thought Sonny played for us now. Here's what I wanted to ask you about that because the second goal, you're right. I mean, it felt like we were smoked in your words. But that first goal, Blackman and Tim Ream, the spacing was on gaping hole settings. Blackman, the debut, 29. And I'll be honest, unexpected experiment with Chris Richards, as you've said, right there on the bench. Also, Cameron Carter-Vickers, seems I don't know what he's done to not get close to this squad. But we know centre-backs together as a pairing need chemistry and that chemistry needs reps.

06how long do we have to you know how long can we experiment at the center back position with nine games left then I mean I think it's important to have consistency in that position it might be a situation where if you're looking to bring someone on maybe try them in the second half if you're if you're up and boss in the game perhaps and looking to kind of see it out but yeah I mean there's so many questions still within this team and we're not far out like who's going to be your goalie? Who's going to be your best centre-back pairing? Who's going to be your number nine? I mean it's a lot of who's going to do what?

44Who's going to be the midfield? Who wants the midfield? Exactly. I think the loss was the loss but that is the chaos. What did we learn towards those questions? I mean get your comments in. Come on up and talk to us about how you're feeling. But in that moment we wanted to see how the US would respond. You mentioned Josh Sargent. Back playing alongside Christian and Tim Weir for the first time since that Panama disaster in the Nations League that you were at. Tim Weir had a chance snapshot in a scrum that went wide. But Sargent has not scored for the US in 2 ,118 days now. Scores for fun as you say for Norwich.

26Leading scorer in the championship right now. How does that work Clint? Striker is prolific for club but not for country. Well, I mean, I think it's difficult when you come into these one-off games or these short windows where there's all that pressure on you to perform. But the only way that you're going to score is you got to get shots off, right? You got to be selfish. And I don't think he was selfish enough tonight. But if you were truly trying to get this guy confidence, goal cup. He should have been brought in in the goal cup. You should be able to get goals against the teams that you had in group play.

59You know what I'm saying? Get that monkey off your back and then start building to what you want to do with this team. I feel for him because he looks like he works hard and it means a lot to him. But for some reason, it's just not clicking with the national team. I don't know if he's too unselfish or what have you or the style of play or the system of play that we have as opposed to Norwich. But it's just not working. I watched Canada win in Europe yesterday. They have, when they get on the ball in their half, they have a real clinical idea of how they want to score goals. I mean, they would just run forward with really a Jesse Marsh menace.

42By the way, same as Korea tonight in that first half. They knew what they were doing in attack. Watching us, I mean, you've scored more goals than anyone for our nation. So, I mean, I'd love you to tell me what you say. We feel so rushed. We feel so frenzied. What did you see when we attacked and what do you want to see? Well, I mean, you're not creating enough chances, right? Are we a team that's getting forward with our outside backs and getting crosses in? I wouldn't say so. I don't see there's a lot of times that you saw that happening, right? And if you're an attacking player that relies on service, there's not going to be a lot of service in that way.

21A lot of times it seemed like it was kind of played through the midfield. You know, you're looking to do some give and goes and stuff like that and trying to get on the half turn. But still, sometimes you just got to get a shot off. There was too many times you're trying to upgrade the shot, upgrade the shot, and it just never got to a better situation. So it was a frustrating night. And then the quality on set pieces wasn't there. We weren't dangerous enough. and then it would get worse for the United States on a stroke of halftime. We were carved apart here. I mean, this was a stunning move, give and go.

59Our backline flat-footed. Scouting report had not told them that Sonny was good at football. He got flattened by threes, but Lee Dong-Yong with a cheeky, cheeky finish. That goal, Clint, it was like watching Korea twist the brains of our backline. The U.S. in that moment looked worse than that Karen at the Phillies game. Yeah, right? Taking the home run ball. For me, it was a lot of things wrong. You have a player that's pressing on the wrong side of the midfielder who was able to get on the half turn and then continue to go forward instead of go backwards. And then you have a give and go where nobody's really on the sun when he gets it.

39And then it's just everybody's caught watching Tim get give and go to round. and it just looked like we were picked apart, right? It looked like we weren't up for the game. It's kind of a kiss of death, right? You're not having to qualify for World Cup. Do you switch off? Do you kind of try to take it easy? Whereas all these other countries, you are still having to fight to get into the World Cup. I mean, they're hungry and they're clicking on all cylinders and getting back on track. I mean, look at what Encelotti did with Brazil when they were struggling early in the qualifying period. And now you're looking at them and getting excited again if you're a Brazilian fan.

18But for the US, we haven't got that excitement going for us. It just seems like we're Groundhog's Day, like I talked about in the beginning. I mean, how do you feel? I mean, I think anyone who loves the team and believes in the team and has seen the forward progress is watch this team. 2014, I'm looking at a poster of you actually ahead of the World Cup with those boys that ESPN made. I'm looking at right now behind my monitor. That spirit, that energy, that idea, it was a crude idea of football. But it was, you know, it was enough to have collect. That's what you need at the international game.

00It's not complicated football that leads it. But we can't even play, can't even do the simple things. We feel like in the A-team, if you remember that, young viewers, you know, like Mr. T in the barn with the pieces of machinery all over the floor. Ultimately, there is a beautiful, beautiful escape vehicle which can be made out of them. But right now we look like we're in pieces, Clint. We really, really do. Well, think back to when Pochettino's taken charge of this team. Like, what are the best results that we've had? I mean, Jamaica away from home, a win in Gold Cup in a shootout versus Costa Rica, like beating El Salvador in the semifinals.

45Like, what are things that have gotten you excited? That's it. What's gotten us? I mean, I wrote that before this game. This has been a hard year. Jack McGlynn's goal versus Turkey in the game we lost. Like, what's been some things that have gotten you excited? There's not much. fleeting Diego Luna moments. You're right. Tillman. Few moments. Yeah, Tillman. Freeze penalty. Saves in a shootout against nobody. It's been a miserable year. And it was dosa zero. Well, as they say, I believe in Korean. Ede Young. Ray Nelson in the chat says, we need Philly Karen to break the press. God bless. Let's make that happen.

28Paul Carr, our old friend, tweeted, The U.S. has been outscored 11-2 in its last seven first halves against top 25 teams. That is not good. Clint, did anyone catch your eye? Or was it only positive of the night that most Americans were watching college football tonight? There's not much. I mean, like you said, it was good to see Christian back in the national team jersey. It was good to see Dest healthy again on the pitch. I've always been a big Balogun fan. Yeah. I think he brought an energy when he came on and was trying to make things happen. Agree. He's so pissed at the end. I mean, that's what you want to see.

09Seething, seething. Chris Richards wasn't on long and he's a centre-back and almost scored for us. He's a bright spot. I don't understand why he wasn't starting from the jump. But yeah, there's not much. I mean, what would you say? Oh, God. I mean, it is, it was so weird tonight watching Jürgen Klinsmann watch his old team beat his old team. Versus his old team. Yeah, with his son on the bench. Yeah, Twilight Zone. Yeah, I mean, it was like, I mean, I don't know. Watching Sebastian Berhalter look like he really gave a crap is like, and trying so hard is like one of the, I mean, I wanted to see who'd step up in that second half.

50Who would not fade away? Diego Luna, God bless him, kept trying to hustle. Potch made four changes on the hour mark. Tyler Adams was fuming. You noticed this when he was taken off. I mean, he's an old school US footballer. It matters to him, all of it, like it does for you, Clint. What will he have been feeling as he went off, do you think? Well, I mean, I think there's a few things that he's feeling. I think that, you know, I bet he feels a certain way about not getting the captain armband. I bet he feels a certain way about, you know, being a leader on this team and wanting to try to get things right and being taken off the pitch in a game where he played for the Red Bulls.

29That was almost like a homecoming for him and Tim Ream, right? And you wanted to show well there, and the game didn't go how you wanted. And in the position that he played, he probably felt there was still more that he could bring to the game maybe, but I don't know. It's one of those things where just nothing's really been going well for anybody. I mean, I'm just, I don't have much to say really. You know what I mean? Like. We are delighted to bring you the Men in Blazers City Guides presented by Visa. Joyously assembled guide to the best places to eat, drink and explore and watch the beautiful game across the country.

58This is where we are. I want to get to the callers in one moment because they're stacking up. I mean, you mentioned Chris Richards. He made a difference when he came on to himself at a free camp with a brief head. Nibalo came on, made a difference. 2-0 the final score. Could have been worse, so much worse. Korea kind of eased off second half. Freeze, very good when called upon. In the MIB Discord, Al Lauren wrote, tonight felt like an unfortunate combination of under-promise and under-delivering. I say, Clint, what's wild? We miss Anthony Robinson. Yeah, yeah, we miss, there's no doubt. He's a huge miss as well.

36And you could make the case we missed Tillman. There's no doubt Weston McKinney's coming back. I mean, the Pochettino relationship with Weston McKinney is clearly one of the full trust. That full relationship is not quite there or he would be here in this moment. Tillman, you could make the case also missing. But, you know, we keep expecting that tonight was a nightmare. We keep expecting to wake up from this dark dream and be saved by the likes of Gio Reyna. you know Brendan Aronson there is a possibility this is the real deal now Clint and that Gio is not coming back to save us Brendan Aronson's not coming back to save us Eunice Moussa almost certainly ain't coming back to save us what if this is it bro lord help us I mean lord help us this is it bro lord have mercy Oh, please, help us get bright.

37I mean, I don't even know what to say. I hope this ain't it. I mean, I'm normally the positive guy, glass half full, but man, even I'm getting kind of beat down in the dumps. I'm starting to feel like Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh, man. I feel like it ain't going to work out. So, I mean, tonight you felt like a, I mean, this was, I'll be candid, I fear Japan. I think they're actually better than Korea. The continuing experiments, the continuing auditions, the talent assessments, I'll just say Blackmon is not it. That felt like a bit of a waste of time. But eight months out of the World Cup, you said it, we got questions all over the field.

16Who's the goalkeeper? Who are our centre-backs? Who's our midfield? Who's our starting striker? You've been in squads. You've been in squads where the coaches change mid-cycle. The fact that everything is still so wide open, as a player, are you like, we need to understand? And Pochettino's just a year in. We've got to give him a little bit more time. This is how it is. Or do we feel behind? Do we feel unusually unstable? I think unusually unstable, there's no more time to be given. I mean, it's now or never. You were brought in to try to get the best out of this team that you possibly could with your eyes to look at this national team pool and find maybe something different that can add to this and make it better.

01I don't think we've progressed since Copa America, in my opinion. We don't have a clear-cut team that we know what our best 11 is or even our best six are, you know. So it's crazy. It's crazy to think that we're this close to the World Cup. We have a World Cup on home soil, and you look at this team, and we talked about it from the top. Like, now with qualifying, more teams get in. But qualifying during our time, does this team get in? I don't know. Fourth place playoff, I think, probably. I give us this. Who me in the chat says, good damn. A Dempsey-Eor reference. That's what it's come down to.

52This is where we are. A Clint Dempsey-Eor. I mean, Poch is a year into the job. He went on television in Spain this week and was asked for his expectations of the US in the World Cup. His quote was, I can't score the goals, nor can I defend them. I mean, I'm sure we'll talk a lot more about this in Columbus in person. How much of this is on him? How much of this is on the players? The players, some of whom he handpicked in a quite unorthodox style. What do we make of this? I mean, it's on everybody. It's on the coaches. you know, for the player selection and for the way in which they play. It's the players when they get the opportunity on the field, what they're doing.

36And it's U.S. soccer. What kind of players are you developing? And why aren't we better than what we were in the past or significantly better or having more depth and more options of players that we can bring in and really kind of change things up? Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, I agree. I will say, listening to Michael Bradley interviewed before the game, where he quite articulately talks about how he wants to see these players know that what they're about to go through is an incredible privilege to represent the United States on home turf in a World Cup where this spotlight is on them. This is the nature of the moment.

16There's the feeling that this is the most incredible moment and the fact that we're heading towards it in just such a savagely self-destructive way. that's what's making this agony feel like double. We've got to touch upon, because I want to get to these questions. They're all lining up. We've got to touch upon the crowd. You mentioned it already, Clint. We lived a Gold Cup in which the stadia were either filled with empty seats for the United States games or sold out by Guatemalan fans or Mexico fans. Tonight, again, felt like another away game on home. So South Korean fans, a number of people there from the media said it was 80 % South Korean packing it in.

56Proch talked this week about how he wants to be, he feels, quote, jealous of college football atmospheres. You know, you've lived. I mean, I remember 2014 again. The US fans bought the second most tickets after the Brazil home fans. Tens of thousands of them followed you around Brazil. I mean, this is where we are now. The fans just given up that the chaos has been so overwhelming for the supporters. Well, I just think if you build it, they will come. You know, like the field of dreams. You know what I'm saying? There's another reference for you. I mean, you got to put the fans in the seats and you got to give them a reason to be excited and pump their chest out and be able to talk trash about, like, my team's going to whoop your butt today.

38Like, have a little bit of confidence and belief. And, you know, it's just not what we're seeing right now. I still think there's time to get things right, right? Get everybody back on track, get some confidence going, and get this team clicking. But we're running out of time. We are running out of time, baby. We are running out of time. Quotes coming in from Mauricio Pochettino postgame via the great Tom Booger on Twitter. Are you ready for this one, Clint? Raise yourself. This is Poch's quote postgame. I think we were better than South Korea, but if you're not clinical, it's difficult.

18Ooh, I mean, I don't know about that. I would say that the game was there to be won because the – I didn't think that they were that organized defensively, South Korea, in my opinion early on. But once we conceded the goals in which we did, conceding that second goal, I mean, it was a wrap. And it was almost like South Korea took their foot off the gas in the second half, right? They knew they kind of had the game won and then it was ours to try to go get. It was too much of a mountain to climb after we conceded that second goal. But to say that we were the better team, how can you say that when we lost 2-0?

01Also, South Korean manager Hyeong Myung-bo via translator said it was like a home match. I appreciate the fans. That's twisting the knife there. Do Sassero in Harrison. E. Day. Young, I think is how you say it. My career is pretty bloody terrible, but I do love your career. You are an incredible, your joy, your footballing nation on the rise is, it's magical to witness. Okay. To your questions, remind how this works here on YouTube live. Just scan the QR code or click the pinned comment in the chat, take you into zoom with the great Tony, our producer who will get you on. We'll take as many as we can before we have to go because Clinton and I have got to get on a flight to Columbus.

44David Lewis from Columbus, Ohio. Is that right, David? Come on up, baby. You can be the first because you are from where we're headed. Are you truly there in the land of Frankie Haydick? Raj, how are you doing, man? I'm on my 50th Michelob because of this game. Just 50. But real quick, Raj, first of all, I want to say I read your book. I love you, man. and Clint, I have your Fulham jersey. I'm sick. I want to know what you guys think about Pochettino's system. I couldn't tell you. Fill in the blank. Pochettino's system is, is it pressing? I don't know what it is out there. They look confused. Can you let me know what's the identity?

27Go back to Perl. Are you in Columbus? Yes, I am. Yes, I am. We're going to get you into the show on Monday night, baby. I already brought a ticket. can I get a refund Raj I'll see you at Kemba we're going to have a point with you come and give us a hug after the show we're going to have a point with you man I cannot wait you're a beautiful human being man it's going to be good but I need it but what is finish this sentence Potch's system is what Clint tell me it's something that's not really setting the world alight what we've seen so far I mean we struggle building out of the back when teams are pressing us we don't have a clear cut way in which we attack we're not creative enough we don't create enough chances I mean you know what I'm saying I don't know what to tell you what I'd say is I love Potch I'm very fond of that man I've seen him at his best.

38I've seen what he can build. I've seen him operate. I've seen him create a culture of positivity, youth, belief, hard work, all of these things. I've seen it. The thing that's frustrating to me is that Potch is not, we don't know, and Potch is not telling us. In these press conferences, in these comms moments, these communication moments, he could be telling us life truths. You know, he could be saying where we are, what challenges he's experiencing and how he, you know, I said this before the game, he can articulate the method to his madness, but without that articulation of the method, it just seems like madness to us.

24And we're all a bit lost. I'd love it. I don't understand that, Clint. Why he's not talking and saying, Because he can speak really on the nose and tell us where we are, what he's trying to do, the barriers, the process. But without that, we're just like, what is going on? No one knows what's going on. Yeah, I mean, we talked about it. You don't know where your keeper is. You're still trying to find your best centre-back pairing. Your best left-back hasn't been in for a while, being a huge miss. We talked about how the midfield is going to look, talking about finding the number nine. So is it a lack of players or the quality of players to like implement the system of play that he has?

05Or, you know what I'm saying? Like you said, he's not talking about, you know, the things he's trying to implement and why it's not working. I mean, but I but to his defense, it looks like there's not much to work with. Wow. I mean, I will say we look lost. We really do look lost. And somebody needs to speak up and tell us where we are exactly. GPS us. Give us a sense of where, you know, if this is a process, where are we in this process? And give us a sense of where we should met. I think it's just the sense of the lack of an articulation is what's making us all feel panicked, filled with chaos, never mind the results, which are pretty bloody terrible.

54The whole feeling, the lack of fan base. I mean, the fact that they've shattered even those that care about this team and the turnouts. This is not who we are. This is not where we should be. Enrique, come on up. Tell us where you are and what's your question for the Mighty Mighty Clint? I'm San Diego. Thanks for taking my call, Raj and Deuce. Pleasure to meet you. It's great to be with you. What an incredible football city your town's become, Enrique. Yes. That's the FC, baby. Now, my question to you, fellas, is with the lack of it looks like there's a lack of passion, a lack of fire being played with a few exceptions.

33Do you feel like having not having to qualify and having those competitive matches is a detriment to the form that we're going to be going into to the World Cup? Yes, I do. I think it's hurt us. I think you have to put your back against the wall during qualifying and come together as a team and put all the BS aside and figure out who's all in and who's not. And going back to the first question that was on, I mean, when you talk about the coach, the two things that bother me is not always bringing in your best players and then not starting your best players when they're in. so but yeah what does that do Clint what does that do within a squad culture when you you have that where you know the players who are clearly better than the ones on the field are sitting there on the bench or sitting at home watching on or not watching on what what does that sow in there because the players are given these moments they're not by the way I don't agree there's no passion that there's no they don't care all that they seem fearful and you said it before Clint almost none of them are stepping up with confidence, verb, swagger and saying I'm going to play like you will never be able to drop me again that's what I don't understand it's almost like they don't have a plan they've not been given a plan so they don't know what they're meant to be doing and it's all kind of in pieces there but what does that do to a team when there is that kind of chaos when you know that the best players are either on the bench or sitting at home well I just think it's important to have chemistry right It's important to have your leaders and your main team and how you're going to play and then make a few changes.

17Sprinkle in a few players in positions, one or two, at the most three, to see how you add depth to this team. But because of our lack of depth and our lack of fighting that best 11, it's just too much going on. It's just too many unknowns. The chemistry is off. People are trying to figure out where they sit into the team or don't and how they're going to play together. And everybody's coming from different clubs and different styles. But if you had a main group that has played with each other more consistently, it's easier to make a few changes and not lose that rhythm. But, I mean, my perfect example is you look in World Cup qualifying.

00You look – no, sorry. Look during the World Cup in the group stage. and you look at those third games when teams are already through. Most of the times when those teams make three or four changes, they end up losing that game. And I just feel like that's the kind of situation we're in. We're just making too many changes and not having enough consistency to get the job done. Yeah, he's trying to build this, rebuild the culture. As a result, we have no chemistry. The culture rebuild is preventing any chemistry from emerging at all. There's nothing like my American Express Platinum card. I love that I can earn hotel credits when I travel.

Enrollment requirements, monthly, and other limits in terms apply. Brace yourself for this one, Clint, via Doug McIntyre on Twitter. Again, South Korean coach Hong Wung Bo was asked, this is Doug's tweet, about, quote, the ease with which his team scored its two goals against the US today.

17His response was, we utilised our speed. Get ready for this line. The opponent wasn't prepared for this, maybe. Clint, we are even getting bodied in the post-game press conference. I know. What's crazy is before the game, you said the exact way that they were going to score. I mean, we got to get you as the coach, bro. You called it. You said, we're not going to be able to deal with their pace. They give our problems to our back line. They were going to exploit that. And what did they do? I was very worried. I mean, I tried to be positive and say, Our centre-backs are going to have to be very focused and disciplined tonight, was what I said.

00Narrator's voice, they were not. Let's take the next call from Doctors Mix a lot. Come on up, you beautiful human being. Tell us where you are. I want your question for Mighty Mighty Clint. Gentlemen, how are we? First off, shout out Nacogdoches from Frisco, Texas. Yes, sir. Yes, sir. So I've recently become a content creator in soccer. In the first half, I was streaming live today. I watched along. I had a couple hundred people watching me. And somehow or another, the conversation stopped talking about the sport and started talking about food. Until there's some sort of excitement in this team, there's no reason for any of us to be excited.

41So, Clint, give me five players to center this team around. Yeah, that's a great question. And I was talking with Raj about that earlier. If you think about the guys that are like for sure lock-ins on this team, I would say Chris Richards. I would say Tyler Adams. I would say Christian Pulisic. And I'd say Anthony Robinson. And the fifth one is a tough one, right? The fifth one is a tough one to find. Dest. I mean that would be the five players that I would say for sure would start I mean maybe would you put McKinney in the mix but you don't know about the relationship with him and Pochettino there and then you know we're looking for the number nine we're looking for the goalie like who's going to be the main main guy there I mean what would you say Raj yeah the only difference my first one would be Tony Miola probably have Gooch in there Carlos Bocanegra but there'd be a Clint, I'd Clint twice, two Clint's.

53That would be my five-a-side US team. I mean, you know, I love Tyler Adams. Like, you know, Dest, watching him go forward, I adored today. I mean, I agree with the others to be candid, so there's no point in dealing with it. I mean, we do have a core. There is a core right there. I mean, you just named it, you know, give or take. Missing two of the spine, right? You're missing a for sure goalkeeper, and you're missing a for sure number nine. Yeah. By the way, I take that. We had that with Greg Berhalter going into 2022, that exact same problem. We had a spine, but we had no goalkeeper yet. You know, there was that goalkeeper battle.

28We didn't know who our strikers would be. Look, I totally agree with you. That's one of the crazy things, Dr. Mix-a-Lot, that there is a core right there. But, you know, in trying to, again, trying to rebuild the culture or remold it to his liking, that core has been smothered or buried. I want to get to these questions, but Dr. Mixalot, you're a mad bastard. You just explained why there weren't American fans at the game tonight. It's because they're all on your live stream, my man. We're going to take two more questions before we end tonight, but I want to just read a quote from Paul Kennedy, a legendary editor of Soccer America on Twitter, who writes, Pochettino described the performance as, quote, a massive improvement.

16The result will come soon. My God, that's good news. The results are coming soon, people. Take these two more tonight. We're going to have Peter come on up, you beautiful human. From the great, I think, the great winning, glorious city of Seattle. Is that right, Peter? League Cup champs, babe. Baby, baby, baby. Your team is amazing. Your team is amazing. I bet, man. I bet. I bet. Raise a glass to you tonight. That was American football joy of wonder. Feels like months ago after that game tonight, though, Peter. What's your question for the mighty Clint? Yeah. So I'm not sure that firing the manager is the magic wand fix for this team, as I think it's a combination of things that have us in the situation we're in.

05But let's say hypothetically that it was all on him and firing him was the best thing for the team before the World Cup. When would be the last possible moment that could happen in this World Cup cycle that could allow us to find a replacement and give that person enough time to work with the team? I guess to put it another way, are we at the point where we just stick with Pochettino because time has run out for any alternatives? well I mean I'll just say I don't think um I think Pochettino is going to go all the way unless Pochettino decides that he just does not like this American thing at all um I think we're going to go all the way I think you could make the case from his perspective um that the only three games that matter that he was hired to manage were the three group stage games and that they're going to just be like judge me on those those are the ones that matter give me this run that's what he signed up for mid-cycle I think right now speaking to people within US soccer their mindset is dudes came in halfway through of course we're behind um you know he's not had a full cycle he I mean that's where we are and so I I would be I I don't I've not come across anyone internally.

22I think the ball is so completely the leverage, the power, the everything. I mean, just financially, the notion of firing him on that contract is just an enormous financial blow. So I cannot imagine that anything is going to happen and S Pochettino's like, you know what, sod this. And he is a proud man. And he is a gentleman that is a singular-minded human being. So I would not discount that in any way, shape or form. But I mean, Clint, you've lived a manager fraying with the players, burning out the connection, losing that way of football. I remember the last days of Jürgen. I mean, he was so positive in the same way as the results were cut.

11But even to the end, his last game, right after his last game, he went off to Germany and did a press conference with Angela Merkel and Barack Obama where they just held up US shirts. And he was like, great, we're going to be great. And then he came back and was fired almost, I think, within three days of his return from Germany. So you've lived these moments. I mean, it has not crossed my mind that this is going to occur. I don't know if it has yours. I mean, for the last two games that we lost, I was out with an injury and wasn't able to be a part of that. I would like to think I maybe could have helped in that situation of those two World Cup qualifying games because that was the case in times before, whether it was Copa America or the World Cup qualifying as we got towards qualifying for Brazil.

05So, but I mean, I think this coach is a fire. He's going to fight to the end. No one's going to walk away from a job. I think this team has struggled with some injuries that has not helped the situation. And also players have struggled with decisions they've made in terms of club teams they've gone to and they haven't panned out how they wanted to as well. But the fact remains is we're still in the situation that we are and you got to kind of right the ship and get things on track. So the only way you're going to do that is the next game. And like you said, Japan is going to be a good test and see how these guys bounce back from this loss.

50My God, I will say you just terrified me. Thinking about Japan who are, I mean, so clinical, so organized, so tactically minded. the idea of Matouma running at this back line is terrifying. And with a back line, this is what makes me panic. Once the back line is uncertain, the whole team starts getting sucked backwards. That midfield start, the uncertainty plays, they all start being sucked backwards. So let's put Japan out of mind. And we're going to go, there's so many questions, but we're going to take one last one. Come back, be with us Tuesday night. I'll actually be in Atlanta, but we will be live after the game.

33Please God, after a joyous, shocking, wonderful US performance of glory, Clint and I will be back. So come and be with us on YouTube again and come and ask your question. But we're going to give the last question to an old friend, a man of wonder. If I ever needed a hug and to hear his made for late night radio voice, it's now, it's Reece Gulchin. Remind us where you are and what's your question for King King? roger roger and clint two fine americans why it's my absolute pleasure to join you reese colchin davidson north carolina long time long time uh let's end on a high note shall we lads let's do it and let's end on a high note i saw fig fit in the uh in the chat they're saying as an argentino he uh he's lived through the downswings and u.s men's team just seems to be on a downswing okay let's say we take let's say we take all these beatings right japan will have their way with us might they yes that could happen yes but in the immortal words of the great harvey milk you gotta give them hope you gotta give them hope so maybe we learn from all of this maybe the gaffer figures something out to find the cohesion that we need clint you tell me have you learned more from beatings like this and been able to turn it around and these lads take the experience of these terrible losses and turn it around before they take the pitch in the red white and blue next year can they turn it around based on these tough experiences that we're having watching them go through right now no i mean i i would agree with that 100 when you think about like part of your development growing up, you know, it's learning from those moments.

22And if you don't learn from them, then you're never going to make it. So it's important to have that kind of stuff stick with you. And as long as you're able to learn from it and bounce back and it makes you a better player for the long run, then that's what it's all about. So, but it just seems like we've been learning a lot lately. We've been learning a lot. hey i mean come on now it's time for us to just chill out for a little bit this is like that meme this is like that meme just tapping the side of the head this is we're thinking differently if you do learn the most paint the most important lessons in defeat then we're in for a good game in a moment because we've been storing them up i can i just thank you reese goldson for turning that frown upside down um i will say harvey milk quotes, Eeyore name drops.

14This Do It Live has had it all. RandomHuman19 in the chat bumming me out again. Pops in there. US Men's National Team currently plus 5 ,000 to win the World Cup. I'm going to put all my crypto on that. Clint, I've got to say I'll leave tonight with a heavy heart, but really I've enjoyed every single question. It's like raised I think for both of us, our energy, our spirit, the joy that we're taking out of this awful night, but we are headed to Columbus. As I said at the top, a city, I wear this sweatshirt proudly, the 6-1-4, which has always had the United States back when we needed it. Boy, how we need it one more time.

53I honestly can't wait to see you there. Raise a pint, have a Schmitz house of sausage. But can you finish the night? Japan are good. They're very good. We've got some mountains to climb. Just give us a message to finish tonight of what you would say if you were in that locker room in training tomorrow. Not tonight, because I know you wouldn't say a lot, but tomorrow when you're going to go again, what would you say tomorrow to those boys? I'm not necessarily talking about what I'd say to them. I mean, it's great to be on here talking with you again, Raj. I really always look forward to these moments and chatting with these fans because it gives you a true sense of the culture and how everyone's feeling.

31I just think it's one of those things, the rain can't last forever. Eventually the sun's going to have to come out. So it's always your next game. it's always your next goal it's it's just that's that's how i always looked at my career don't get too high don't get too low it's a roller coaster and uh you know you're just a goal away from getting back on that wave so let's get to surfing the rain can't last forever honestly number one i love that number two you've clearly never lived in liverpool but you did live in seattle man you did live in seattle talk about let's get surfing my god frankie haydook is going to be with us oh, we're going to start with Frankie.

08Yeah, start with Frankie. He's going to have espresso in one hand and a beer in the other. Oh my God, ate espressos before he used to kill on the game. That guy, for reals. I mean, crazy. We got Wilford Nancy, who is probably pound for pound the smartest coach that the United States is currently carrying on the men's side at the moment. We got the great Herc Gomez. We're going to do the live Monday night on stage at Kemba Live. Dave, I think your name was from Columbus. come and be with us and make sure you raise that point. It'll be a night of football. It'll be a night of joy. It'll be a night of communion before the U.S.

44takes on Japan. Tickets available in the link we're posting in the chat. Other than that, I'll just say thank you, Clint Dempsey. You are a great American. And I know I'm not alone in the chat. Stuart Zekman says, thank you, Clint, for all you've done for U.S. soccer. Lizzie Kitten18 says, love Clint. He's an incredible host. God, you lift all of our hearts, man. Thank you all, man. It's always good to be on here and trying to right the ship. Come on, Captain. Come on, Captain. Trying to bail the water out, man. Get these buckets of water out, man. I'm bailing. I'm bailing. I'm bailing. Big, big love, America.

20It's a better day to head. Courage.
