The Men in Blazers live reaction to the USMNT’s 4-2 friendly win over Chile, focusing on youth/rotation, the back line and goalkeeper uncertainty, and what it means heading into Mexico.
Guest backgrounds

Sebastian Berhalter is described as a reliable leader who adapts with both youth and experienced teammates; Chris Richards’ return stabilizes the back and improves set pieces.
Notable examples
Julian Hall (18) scores and is praised as dangerous; Berhalter scores after a Gio Reyna setup; Chris Brady’s positioning is criticized; Chile’s goals include a halftime collapse leading to Brian Schwalke conceding after a misread header. Automatic transcript. May contain errors.0:00The one question I get most after all that football memory making we experienced across America this summer is, how do I keep the magic going? I'd start by saying, articulate what you love the most and then build on it. First step, find the team that will most probably break your heart and then add all the supporting necessities to build your weekend tradition. The key to so many of mine is Walmart, the place that has it all, the snacks, the coffee, the pies. You can also get the TV at Walmart, the hoodie to wear on your couch. Get the couch if you need it. And wait, it gets better. Because their express delivery can get it right to your door so you're all set for kickoff.
0:40Whatever your matchday needs are, you can find them at walmart.com slash soccer. Delivery timing varies by order size, traffic, weather and demand. Subject to availability, fees and terms apply. You're listening to the Men in Blazers Media Network. Suboptimal Radio.
1:08USA Chile or Yankees Red Sox? You tell me which is the biggest sporting rivalry after that smells like teen spirit win against Peru. Oh, we took on that long, thin nation and smacked them 4-2. It wasn't as easy as I'm making it sound, But take that, Pedro Pascal. Clint Dempsey, how much should we be losing our minds on a scale of 1 to 10? Oh, man, we should be losing our minds a lot for the fact that we keep conceding goals. The back line is still a little bit worrisome with the goalkeeper situation. But at the same time, it's a team that's exciting to watch in the attack. There were some great goals tonight from some experienced players, from some young up-and-coming stars as well.
1:58So all in all, hey, happy to get the win. The players look like they cared. And let's bring on Mexico. Yes. I love you, Clint Dempsey. What Clint's saying, let me just interpret. He's saying, how much should we be losing our minds about a friendly which means absolutely nothing? Let's lose our minds. It's a 9 out of 10 situation. It's Rog in San Francisco. If you're joining us, you're watching The Juice Live with Clint Dempsey. we've just watched a game in St. Louis a lot of YouTube lovers I've got to say loving the simplicity of your set Clint at steady and level one of many who commented under our YouTube I love the no thrills aesthetic with the gun locker classic Texas try to cover it up with the jersey but actually there's a reason why there's none in the cabinets I'm moving soon so I'm lazy man I don't want to keep getting it out putting it up, out.
2:53So that's why it's looking like this. So apologies for the people back home. I love it, man. I just love it. It's just like bookshelves and no books. That's my vibe. And we're not alone. So many of you get any comments in early. Aoki Bulldog says some real fight at the end as Judd Nelson learned so long ago. Mess with the bull and you get the horns. Keep your comments coming. To this game, Pochettino 10 changes from the starting lineup that began against Peru, 23 years, 25 days, youngest ever average of a Poch squad, just Gio Reyna being carried over and he's like, woof, an old man at like 23, three teenagers, lovely teammates being flung in together, young guns, up top, 18-year-old Julian Hall of Red Bulls along with Adrian Mometti, who grew up, I love this, playing in his backyard in Staten Island, which his dad called the Mini Maracana.
3:50From that garden to a U.S. international field. Early on, he looked composed. He looked probing in the opening quarter of an hour. It began well before it got complicated. Yeah, yeah. I mean, look, it was a back-and-forth game. I thought Chile had some exciting players, some youth in the team. Osorio stood out to me. Loyola stood out to me. Gutierrez stood out for me for them. But, yeah, it was back and forth. We were a little bit unorganized in the back, which was what you kind of think with a lot of changes coming into the team. But still in the goalkeeping situation, we still haven't found our guy.
4:29And we're still looking. We're trying every shoe on to see which one fits, right? But I was still excited about some things, you know, some of the attack and play. You know, Berhalter again, goal and assist. Julian Hall getting a goal. So Matisse being the youngest, I think, ever to score for the full men's national team. Chris Richards, great to see him back. He's going to shore up that back line for us. We need that man. A little bit better. We need that man. Arguably the most important player in the U.S. starting lineup. A central defender who can defend. Look, Clint, I thought this was going to go differently.
5:08Let's be honest. Chile are not a very good footballing side. Should have been really a perfect opponent for this very young futures team almost. They have been one of the most important national teams in South America, but that history. Failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. Actually missed three straight World Cups. Came bottom in qualifying, which is, you know, you really have to work hard at that. But you've nailed it. Our back line, never played before. Young, raw, 6 '7", Neil Pierre, centre-back. 18, I think he is. Must have felt beautiful for him. Have his Philadelphia Union teammate, Frankie Westfield, alongside him.
5:49Both look nervous. It's got to be said, Miles Robinson was a very, very odd selection. In there for reasons that aren't clear. He's kind of the opposite of experimental. You know what he brings. And Asurio of Crystal Palace kept running at him, picking up on Miles Robinson's slop at will. As he tried to score off a corner, our goalkeeper, first half, Chris Brady. He looks a bit like a lovable con man, a street hustler and everything. Paul Thomas Anderson movie was up for it to begin with. But the back line, it was wide open and the midfield was so sloppy in possession. Yeah, yeah. We're lucky not to go down more.
6:29I mean, the Soria chance off the crossbar. They had a few other chances as well. I was surprised on the one play. There was another one off the bump. yeah also that through ball that came through um from their player hit a great ball in but our keeper wasn't off of his line right he was staying on his line so you're thinking where is he at and then they panned he wasn't even in the frame so he was that he was that far back uh look i'm someone who likes to keep with the play a little bit more off of his line make life a little bit easier for the defenders to be able to press a little bit higher and contain them and in that situation it looked like something that really didn't need to happen but maybe you know you're out there at the stadium but when he panned and i didn't see the keeper i was like oh no that was so that was so odd it's like we become accustomed when you watch so much football too like you expect the goalkeeper to be just charging in and clearing that you had no fear and then after about felt like an eternity felt like five minutes like where is he and and he dropped back onto his line it was like watching almost like jv football he's like come at me bro So, and God bless him.
7:35To be fair, he made the save in the end on that particular play. So, we're not going to go scorched earth on him. But, you know what I'm saying? Let's just say it's different. Come at me, bro. Pick of the U.S. chances. Julian Hall sprung by Berhalter. Hall, I think half the field rumble around to the keeper. Then botched the shot. Really ballooned it over the bar. You see in that moment, that first half moment, we texted a little bit about it. the excitement, the adrenaline of playing for the United States. If he's wearing a Red Bulls jersey, he probably would have put that chance away. Yeah, I mean, first off, great ball from Berhalter, the weight in the past which he played to him.
8:15Julian Hall for timing his run perfectly to get in that situation. It just looked like when he did take that touch around the keeper, it took that a little bit too far, which then he kind of knew and he kind of was rushing. It looked like he was off balance a little bit. maybe try to like chip it uh to the far post or something but or maybe you'd even cut it back but to get in that position was great but yeah just a little bit of a heavy touch there but hey what I like what I'll say about him is he's dangerous he creates problems like you said he did score the goal uh the second goal which he did a great job of being on the blind side of the defender and that's what allowed him to time his run perfectly uh to that ball from Gio and then he had another chance in the second half where he tried to open up his body and go far.
8:59Yeah, yeah. He had the right ideas of what he's doing and he gets in great spots. So I'm liking what I'm seeing from this kid. Yeah, I adore that kid. We'll talk about him in one second. I think in that chance, he ballooned over the bar. He should have tried to get his head on it. That guy finishes everything, but only with the meaty forehead. You had those chances for Chile, back to back, thunderous shots off the bar with Brady nowhere near them. But cometh the hour. Cometh the Berhalter. Hard work in this one done by Dest. A cut in, I think, from the right, giving go with Gio Reyna. Really incisive dummy.
9:37This was a kid who, remember playing his second game for the US, probably called off the ball by Berhalter, wide open behind him. Really just the man we needed to calm this team down with a finish. call an ambulance, but not for the US men's national team babies. Clint, Sebastian Berhalter is growing into just the baseline for this team, a reliable leader. Having the name Berhalter, it's a tradition in the US team of just multiple generations. A bit like Michael Bradley had his last name, which was hard for him at the beginning. You almost have to really play superlatively to excel, to get any credit at all?
10:22Yeah, I mean, first of all, I want to talk a little bit about the goal that he scored and then I'll go more into depth when I think about him as a player, as you talked about his last name. But what I liked is they moved desks a little bit. He was operating on the right. They allowed him to go on the left-hand side. I think sometimes mixing your wingers up is always a good thing to give them different looks. And I like the way he naturally comes in on the right, on his right foot from the left-hand side. And to your point, when he made the pass across the Berhalter, Julian Hall did a great job of dumbing it, which allowed Berhalter that little bit more time, a little bit more of a window.
10:55Great finish by him into the far post. But going back to what you said about the pressure of having that last name. Yeah, I mean, there's always pressure no matter what you do. But but also that is more added pressure to your point. And yeah, he's playing great. It doesn't matter who you put next to him. I feel like he finds a way to get the job done. If you're playing him with more of the youth, it seems he's still able to be effective. And then when you play him with more of the quality players, the experienced players that came in the second half, like Chris Richards, Tyler Adams, like Tillman and some of those Freeman, some of those players, he doesn't miss a beat.
11:32So it's one of those things. Obviously, you're going to play better with better players around you. And I think you I think you would see Gio maybe shine a little bit more with some of those better players around him. He did have the assist, but besides that, a little quiet at times. But, yeah, Berhalter's playing really good at the moment. And I'm looking forward to this Mexico game to see, like, I think the coach is going to take it serious, and he's going to put his best 11 to start that game to give us a better idea of what youth players does he see on that level of pushing for a spot really in the team.
12:09I think we might get a little insight there. I want to get to the Mexico game and get your thoughts on how Potts are going to play I think Pomme thinks he's going to unleash just a starting 11 composed purely out of 11 and 12 year olds just because The one question I get most after all that football memory making we experienced across America this summer is how do I keep the magic going? I'd start by saying articulate what you love the most and then build on it. First step find the team that will most probably break your heart and then add all the supporting necessities to build your weekend tradition the key to so many of mine it's Walmart the place that has it all the snacks the coffee the pies you can also get the TV at Walmart the hoodie to wear on your couch get the couch if you need it and wait it gets better because their express delivery can get it right to your door so you're all set for kick off whatever your match day needs are you can find them at walmart.com slash soccer delivery timing Varies by order size, traffic, weather and demand.
13:12Subject to availability, fees and terms apply. Back to back games with a goal for Berhalter. I love this tweet. From Iron Vibes, Middlesbrough have brought the soccer version of 2010's Bitcoin because Berhalter is on fire. I can't think of a US player who's improved his all-round game more over the course of the last season than Sebastian Berhalter. I just think there's something about scoring goals in the World Cup. It just takes your confidence to another level. I got to experience that in 2006, and then I made my move to Europe, to England, to the Premier League. And I think for him it's the same thing.
13:56I think it's gotten him more confident, knowing that he can score on the biggest stage. He's producing with Middlesbrough, who are top of the championship. Looks like they're going to go into the Premier League. So, yeah, man, just keep doing your thing. He's dangerous on set pieces and he can score goals. So I've been really excited about all that. Does it really mean that that really means that's game changing to that degree. You score a goal in the World Cup. And for you, that gave you you walk taller. You shot straighter. You believe more. It really has that impact. A single goal can change your life.
14:33I think so, man. I think there's a confidence you get. Like the first goal you ever scored as a professional. For me, it was against the Metro Stars. And it was a ball that bounced down and I was able to get a volley. Yeah, but you know what I'm saying? Being able to get a goal at the professional level. Then you get your first goal for the national team, you know? Then the World Cup goal is just, that's the top of the top for me. It is. So that just brought out a swagger for you and that's what you're seeing in Sebastian. Well, yeah. I mean, it's probably a dream come true for him that knows that it gives him a little bit of peace.
15:08And then it's like he's still hungry and going for more. You know, that's what you're seeing. You're seeing someone who gained confidence from that experience and is still hungry, reaching for more and knows that there's a higher level to get to. And we're seeing that right now. But the question is, can you do it in the Premier League? You know, can you do it with, you know, win the starting spot in this team and be in our starting 11 for all those big matches? And he has the ability to do that. Do you remember, Clint, the goalkeeper you scored that first goal against, against the Metro Stars?
15:43Ooh, I know that who was marking me, my roommate in college, Ricardo Clark. You did, Truman Forever. Oh, my God. Yeah. Unbelievably, it was a goalkeeper called Johnny Walker. Yep. Johnny Walker Red. Definitely not Johnny Walker Blue. So chat is loving. Sebby Berhalter at Oki Bulldog says, Berhalter is the heartbeat of this new group. Captain material shows heart and fight that galvanises a team and a nation. At J Matthew J says, Berhalter is he the goal child. The goal should have settled the US nerves. Instead, it merely proved a prelude to almost self-destruction. Chile had, I must say, throughout the game, didn't matter who was in goal.
16:30Zero respect for our goalkeepers. They were just trying to do the work for Matt Turner. They want that man back. And they fired every single corner, almost as if it was an easy shot on goal. Chris Brady, ultimately, I mean, it's exhausting. It's nerve-wracking having Olympic out after Olympic out testing you. Finally got caught, a stroke of halftime, under a ball, flailing, slop, smashed over the line by Rojoa. Felt terrible, but it would get worse for the young US men's national team. Potch hooked Chris Brady, as if he was Wayne Brady, replaced him with debutant Brian Schwalke, who I don't think even made a save before Westfield misread a header.
17:12Gutierrez charged in. I've got to say it was a fine, fine finish. Disguised, almost lashed it to the keeper. Clint, that was a human agony, because I was old enough to remember the time when these young kids were the American future, and we were feeling great about smashing Peru, and now this, Clint. Yeah, I mean, we still had the same feelings from that game as this game, as we talked about in terms of being a little sketchy in the back and the keeper situation. And we still have the youth that's going. So it's kind of like Groundhog's Day, in my opinion. It's there was a lot of good things that we saw.
17:48There's still some things that we need to correct. But all in all, we got the job done and we won the game and I'm attacking a player. I like to see goals and I'm getting what I want. Hopefully we can tighten things up in the back. I'm getting what I want. At Mike Fitchery, 81177 in the chat says, goalkeeper is the biggest issue going forward. Like what I see otherwise. At Zusifer says, World Cup goal, make it sound like a toupee, just a real confidence booster. It didn't work for Julian Green though, did it? Two minutes, 20 seconds later. Resilience, tenacity. Gia Reina, quite flowing cross. And again, it was your man.
18:30You mentioned him earlier. Julian Hall, best hall since kids in there. Jumped up across his man. Just an angle flick. That's his signature goal. 13th player to score in his first two caps for our nation on the men's side. Youngest ever. Just 18 years old. When that kid, this is a theory, Clint. when that kid doesn't have to think about his shooting, when it's just instinctive, he's in pure flow. Yeah, for sure. I mean, I think a lot of people kind of have those instincts and there's a reason why he's a striker because of the way that he can sniff things out. I mean, what I liked about that goal was the fact that he stayed moving.
19:16He stayed on the blind side of the defender, which then allows him the opportunity to get a jump start on the cross. Great weighted ball in from Gio. He was able to get the jump start on the defender, get up before the defender. If you get up before the defender, it's game over because you can use your body to keep him down. And then the way in which he got over the ball and headed it towards the ground, it was really a great finish. But still in the misses that you saw, to your point, a little out of control, a little bit raw, but he creates those chances and he's trying to do the right thing.
19:48You know what I mean? You beat the keeper on the dribble, which I like, but it's too big of a touch, right? You try to whip a ball far post, but you're leaning back, so it's going a little bit high. You need to keep your chest over a little bit, but he's trying to do all the right things, and I'm excited for what I'm seeing. Yeah, he scooped that chance right afterwards over the bar at Slim in our Discord, said, Hall has scored seven points tonight. I love this tweet. At Burgermeister tweeted, Polish men can jump. God bless. Just two more games now, and he is tied to the United States and cannot play for Poland.
20:25Make it happen, Potch. I think Potch is going to make it happen. Pretty sure he's going to play in both of the next games. Talking about Potch, dressed very preppy tonight, had his sweater tied around his neck like Carlton from Fresh Pints of Bel Air. And then he was like, I can't handle the negativity. There was a moment where he was just like, not wanting the negativity of a loss. didn't want to lose this game to Chile before playing Canada and Mexico, two massive opponents regionally. So he just decided not mucking around, putting in my serious big boy back line and putting in Tyler Adams. The game meant nothing, but he didn't want the narrative of losing, Clint.
21:06And it changed everything, putting in the elite. You saw the quality just in that Tillman sliding pass to Anthony Robinson, set up the corner. Sebastian Berhalter took it. what a player he is. And just subbed on Chris Richards, again, pound for pound, our most important player, completely unmarked, dunked it, take that balloon, the Ruda. Chris Richards is a great American, I love that guy. Yeah, for sure. I mean, it's good to have him back, obviously, with his experience. He knows how to win things. You saw that from his time in England. He just brings you a level of confidence. He shorts things up in the back that we talked about, but he also gives you that little bit extra on set pieces.
21:51And you talked about a great ball in, whipped it like it was a free kick that you're trying to score on goal in terms of like the power that he had on it. And then all you have to do is Chris Richards and just get your head on it to put it in the back of the net. I mean, great cross, great finish. And yeah, you can, what I like this is Pochettino wanted to win the game. He knows what it's like to have these friendlies and have all these questions asked when things are not going good. He's a competitive person. He wants to win. I think he wants to capitalize off the momentum that he's created for what we saw in the World Cup.
22:26Good job, not great job in terms of how they played. And he's trying to build something right. He's got a full cycle now to bring in the players that he wants, create the culture more so that he wants and find that mix of youth with experienced players. So I'm looking forward to seeing the decision he makes and to see how far we can take it and how much more that we can improve and make this team a side that can go on and try to do something special. So you know how it is. You're always hoping, bro. Oh, my God, I love that. That should be the motto for this U.S. team going forward. Clint Dempsey, always hoping, bro.
23:06So Kavan Sullivan came on for the last 10 minutes. Really electric run down the left flank. It was the right flank, wasn't it? Really lovely highlight reel that we're going to see a lot of in between games. Getting to a really tired Chile at this point. Turned 17 in between the last games. I love what he said after making his debut against Peru. It just cracked me up. He said, I've dreamed of this day my entire childhood. I mean, I loved him, Clint. I've dreamed him. I mean, it's really not that long. He was 16 when he made his debut. He's kind of still in his childhood. Yeah, man. I mean, I feel what he's saying.
23:48You know, it's something that he, as a kid, he probably prayed about or probably, you know what I'm saying, could see himself doing something like that. And to be doing that at 16 and now to be 17, playing for your full men's national team is crazy. beating people down the line it just needs that little bit of that final that that that that that final little bit of class you know get that assist get that goal once he gets that you're gonna see him get getting on his way what i liked about it is he wasn't selfish because i would have shot that if i beat two guys and i'm cutting in on my left foot i ain't got a shot i'm setting something up to get another shot then to try to try to slip that but shout out to him He did a good job of trying to slip that pass.
24:32It almost led to the goal. So that was exciting to see. And like you said. What's that feel like, Clint, when you've like beaten two players and then there's just suddenly daylight and you're just like, we're doing this. That must have felt. Oh, my God. You're getting excited. You know that you can see your name on the front page of the paper. That's what you start to think about. You know, you got to make something happen. So shout out to him for coming on, being a difference maker. and look forward to seeing more of them. I think he's exciting. Also, Matisse, man. He's another exciting player.
25:05Yeah, talk about it. Great finish that he had. Greenville kid. I went and played a pickup thing in Vegas one time and got to chop it up with him a little bit. So he's good people, man. Yeah. What? Was this like high-stakes poker you were playing with Matisse? No, it was something with the Nike brand. And they had some of the young players with the former players. Oh, my God. For me, got to meet Figo. Edgar Davies was there also. So, yeah, it was cool just to play and chop it up with everybody. Oh, mate, mate, mate. And you spent some time with Matisse Albert there, did you? Yeah, yeah, yeah. We talked a little bit, talked a little bit of trash.
25:52And there was another thing that happened out in L.A. where I got to catch up with him again. See how, you know, talk to him about it, how everything's been going and making sure that if you're needing any help, man, reach out. So, no, it's good to see people that you come across and that are gone and do big things. And I think his ceiling is crazy high. I've got to say, it makes me so happy that he is connected. I think it's something that we need to do more of in U.S. soccer. We need to meld the generations. There needs to be more connectivity. it's something that US soccer could most certainly play a role in and to know that you're around him to know that he's got a chippy mouth to know he's got a good trash talking game as well as a great and by the way very brave finish this kid who's mostly Dortmund too he's not you know he's played a little bit for the the first team that was an incredibly smashing home from close range off a off a fine header back from across I think it was Austin trustee an ecstatic moment that but that was very brave flinging himself in hungry man yeah hungry and you know you got you take you got you take a risk right when you go with your studs up to finish the ball if you don't get the ball and hit a man but it's like how who wants it more right and he wanted it more than anybody else he was rewarded and what I was impressed with was how fast they counted that as a goal in terms of the technology or what have you or did the linesman see it or not but great call uh because in real time it happened so fast until the replay I didn't know that they crossed the line but yeah great finish.
27:24Yeah, ecstatic moment. Youngest goal scorer ever for the United States. May it be the first of so many more you find, young man. We still had time for a full squad fight at the end. Do you remember those moments, the rucks? Football fights are the not fights. Just a lot of pushing the chest against each other and head to head. I mean, I bet you missed that almost as much as playing yourself. Well, you know what I mean? what I liked about that was that look, both teams were competitive and wanted to win. There was a little bit of pushing going on, but nobody's diving on the ground. You know what I'm saying?
28:01If you're talking about it, then be about it. Right. So that's what I like. I like the fact that nobody was fake diving, trying to give people red cards. Look, they had a disagreement. There might've been some trash talk and go on. You gotta, you know, we're at home. So you gotta look out for your keeper or whatever in a situation. But Hey, when it's a competitive game, that's what you get. But it's good to see that they're taking these friendly serious because they wouldn't be acting like that. There's a culture that's created this to have your teammates back. And you can see that. And Chris Richards is definitely one of those guys that leads by example on that one.

28:36I love Chris Richards. I love that man more than I can say. Finning Queen says, oh, why shoot the breeze about it when you can be about it? That's Nass quoting Clint Dempsey. of course. Who had the best trash-talking game that you ever played against? Man, I don't know. Everybody, you know, every time you go against somebody, they got something to say. One of the funnest things that someone said, it was like, I think it was, who was it? I think it was Gareth Berry when he played at Man City. He said something about, he thought, do you think you're Eminem or some shit? Like, yeah. He was talking something.
29:17It was crazy. Oh, there was one time, hey, one time they killed me. Do you think you were Eminem? That's so great. Yeah, they said something like that. Hey, but there was one time I played club soccer. I broke my wrist, and I had to wear, like, this cast on there. And, like, I slide tackled this kid. He's like, easy there, rollerblader. He said I looked like I was all suited up like I was rollerblading. But those are some that stand out, too. I can't see you with Eminem now. The other ones I can't say on here, I can't use that profanity. We'll save them for when we do the live stream on HBO Max on Monday night.
29:54They won't mind it on HBO. That's HBO language. Matt Murphy, 24 in the chat, says, loved the fight back. They got NFL chippy. Clint, which one of these new players reminds you a tiny bit of what you were like as a young player, young Clint? Well, I hate when people ask me, like who reminds me of me? This ain't about me. But players I like to watch and are excited to watch. I mean, you know, Matisse, I like, I like the, the energy that he brings. I like the way the confidence that he has. He wants to, you know, prove himself and show that he's one of the guys, right? Kevin has that as well. Julian Hall has that.
30:33You know, there's some more young guys that they probably had in the team that I haven't got a chance to see. I like watching Tillman play the way that he gets on the half turn, the quality of passes, also his creativity, being able to take players on. So Gino's desk as well is exciting. I mean, there's a lot of, that's why it's fun to watch this team. I just feel like there's a lot of exciting players in the attack. And I feel good about our chances in games of getting goals. At Bourne Slippy in the chat wants to know, Rog, which reminds you of young Rog? That's definitely Chris Brady. Which was your favorite US men's national team goal tonight?
31:0943 % of you in the chat said Berhalters, 27 % Richards, even split between the other two. I want to button this. I thought Chile were very good to not be honest. I was surprised. Truly limited. By the way, Clint, quickly, what do you know about Chile? True or false? Play this with me. Is it the narrowest country in the world? True. True! Average width of just 110 miles. Narrarest point is 56 miles wide. It is genuinely, it is, if you look at the map, it is just the skinny man of South America. Chile is home to the most penguins of any sovereign country in the world. Oh. I'm going to say true because you brought it up.
31:56That's crazy stuff. I know. I got lost in this when I got bored in the game. It's got 30 million penguins. 30 million. First of all, how do they even count this? I need to know. Ornithologists, please get to me. It is the driest place on earth. I've got to go to Chile. I'd love to go. It's like Seattle's alter ego. There's a place there in the desert, I think, that has just 15 millimeters of rain. Also, did you see this? I think I sent this to you. This story cracked me up. Texas State Representative Tom Ollison introduced a resolution into the Texan, is it the Congress? Texan Senate? Texan House?
32:29To urge Texans to stop using the Chilean flag emoji when they went to use the Chilean one clint yeah yeah that's uh that's bad right but that's close man there's a few flags close also the north carolina flag's a little similar to that but uh yeah but there's only there's only one texas flag when they said chili and in texas they probably thought it was the beautiful beautiful delicious meat-based dish a true fact by the way chileans got the second biggest consumer of bread in the world after the Germans. Too deep on this. So cap the evening for me, Clint. Give it 4-2. Tiny bit of reality check for the middle of the game after that Peru game, but to have the tenacity to bring it home.
33:15I think it's a fifth straight win against South American opponents. So many lessons learned. What's your feeling cap for it as a narrative? Yeah, I mean, just to show a little love to Chile. You know, you talked about where they were coming into this game. so didn't really expect much. But there were certain players that stood out, like we talked about earlier. Osario, he's a special player. Loyola, I like the way that he plays in midfield. And Gutierrez had a great finish, how he cut inside, used the defender to shield the ball with that finish. But, yeah, look, we're still experimenting. I think we're going to go with more of the best lineup that I think that he feels can get the job done against Mexico because I think he is a competitive person, Pochettino.
34:02I think he wants to continue off this momentum of the World Cup. So I think Chris Richards comes in. The back would be interesting who plays alongside him. And, you know, the midfield, you've got to think Tyler Adams and Tillman and Berhalter are probably going to be in those positions. It's going to be interesting to see what he does with Dest and Gio. Up top, who's he going to go with? Is he going to go with the young gun, Julian Hall, again? So, yeah, there's a lot of things. I mean, Anthony Robinson, he does what he does on the left and is the difference maker. And probably Freeman comes in and plays on the right.
34:39I don't know who goes in the goal, but that's kind of what I'm seeing within this team. And we've got some exciting players that can come off the bench and make a difference in Matisse and Cavan. Not to say there's not other players, but... Cavanaugh playing against Mexico is just, oh my God, worth watching. Just that electric narrative, because what will go on in his head when he gets subbed in in that game is going to be fascinating to watch. I think he should put Younes Moussa in goal. Do it, you coward.
35:12I will say, you know, this has been a lovely couple of games. It's allowed us to dream again after, I think, the bitterness of the World Cup exit. I'd say Anheuser-Busch always says drink responsibly. We've got to fan responsibly. Peru are terrible. Chile, it was a fighting Chile tonight. But this is not an alpha team. Let's enjoy these moments. Let's enjoy these kids. Julian Hall, Mometi, Kavan. But drink responsibly. Let's fan responsibly. On to Mexico and Canada. and then let's talk about exactly where we are. This Mexico game, it does feel, I mean, Mexico, US, always important. This game is fascinating in terms of the narrative for us.
36:04To not lose is to win. Yeah, I mean, look, the game's probably going to be more so in favour of the opposition, even though it's on home soil. It's going to be a game that anybody gets up for. Anytime you're in a packed stadium and you're playing against a rival with your national team, I mean, you're going to see fireworks. So just interested to see, like, what lineup we go with. And does that give us more insight of what who he thinks are our top young talent and who he thinks of the players that he called in are his best experienced players? and then see who are the people that surprise you that make a difference that you weren't expecting.
36:49So, I mean, that's what it's all about, trying to figure out a way that we can make this best team as we get towards Nations League, Gold Cup, Co-op America, World Cup qualifying. That's, we've got four years and hopefully we keep trending. I love, I'm so excited for Saturday night because some of these kids, I mean, we've seen, even look at the, I'm looking on the screen right now, the Albert goal again. so fearless I think you know tonight I couldn't believe how empty the stadium was so many red seats and then I realized there weren't red seats it was Chilean fans wearing the red jersey again an incredible turnout by the road team it's going to be in Arizona you know Hercules Gomez said he expects it to be 80 % Mexican fans at least it's going to be a cauldron it's going to be a gauntlet it's going to be an incredible test but looking at Albert fling himself where the bodies are flying, looking at Julian Hall, some of these kids are fearless and I do think it's going to be fascinating just to watch how they operate under the kinds of conditions they will never have played in before as Herc knows and you've lived Clint, I mean it is it's intimidating it can be inspiring I mean it always brought the best out of you but it's going to be fascinating to see who steps up and who wilts
38:15yeah man i mean i'm excited about seeing who will um uh in that situation and look uh it's a big opportunity to to make your mark in this team in this world cup cycle we talk about people's stocks going up and every window you have an opportunity to change how you're viewed by this manager the The goalkeeping job is completely up for grabs. And there's a few other places as well. So it'd be interesting to see what attacking players make that impact. And as we get that full team together, like how that really starts to look. And I think it's going to have people pushing each other for positions, having more competition.
38:57And I think that's what we need, people to go in there and look over their shoulder a bit. and everybody in there wants to be the big dog, right? And they're going to try to do it. So that's what you want as fans, right? That's what you want. And in terms of the fans coming to the game, if you build it, they will come. So if they keep performing well, putting on exciting display of attacking soccer and creating chances and getting results and time and ensuring things up a little bit more in the back, man, you're going to see things start to turn like what you saw during the World Cup. Clint, I'll finish tonight.
39:31I love what you've just said because I do think some of those kids, I remember when Wayne Rooney came through England as a teenager, he was like a snarling ball of aggression, impossible to ignore. And you always say, who will make themselves impossible to ignore? We only have a couple more nights to wait before we see that. I want to close with a couple of questions tonight. Tim Ream, retired, 39 years of age, strange international career, 86 caps, 30 of those, I think, around the age of 30. He had three huge spells in his career where he was completely, it felt like he was the international, not that he was done with international football, international football was done with him.
40:19You know, Greg Berhalter raced him for an entire year, came back with Miles Robertson and Chris Richards, injured on the cusp of the 2022 World Cup, stepped up and then made it, you know, made himself, refashioned himself as the leader of a very, very young team. I speak to him a lot. I'm almost like these guys' dad. He really was the ultimate U.S. men's national team monk. You know, tenacity, perseverance, a very good, gracious human being. How do you think Tim Ream will be remembered as a U.S. player?
40:57I think he was appreciated more towards the end of his career, like you talked about. There was that spell in the middle where he wasn't probably getting as many call ups as you would have thought. Right. So also the way that he performed in Europe and and the quality in which he played the game, especially at his time at Fulham, really stands out to me. and yeah he was a smart player good distribution out of the back could read the game really well didn't need to be the fastest guy on the pitch to do so and carved out for himself a great career so I wish him the best he once was one time was one of my roommates with the national team so yeah man glad for him and what he was able to accomplish and wishing the best in his the rest of his MLS career.
41:49What was that like? Clint Dempsey and Tim Ream, that's like an odd couple. Tim Ream just loves the gangster. He loves the gangster rap. Not a lot of people know that about Tim Ream. That must have been quite a comment.
42:06I mean, yeah, just one of those camps. I mean, sometimes they would pick the roommates that you have and obviously when a coach comes in, he kind of mixes things up. But yeah, we were roommates and it was cool to hang out. He was real chill, didn't really say much, kind of a quiet guy. But yeah, to see what he's done with his career. Godspeed, Tim Reed. By the way, streets won't forget, I want to usher in a segment in which we honor the memory of past US players who came, saw, and etched themselves into our minds with true singularity. Are you ready for this one? I was thinking about a player you played with.
42:45I don't know if you'll be able to guess who I'm thinking. He was a strange one. Obsessed with juggling. Obsessed with Zen philosophy. Came from Norway. That's a heavy clue. Into a US team where we didn't really get to watch him very often. A couple of amazing highlights. He had very, very long hair. Do you remember who I'm talking about? Went to a World Cup with you. Didn't play. Signed a DP. Oh, you're close. Aaron, he got injured, didn't he, in the World Cup? No, it's... Aronson, Aronson. Diskarud, God bless. Played for NYC FC. What was it? Oh, Miss Diskarud. Ultimately became a global. Okay, dang, dang, dang.
43:24What was it? He went to South Korea. He was an amazingly soulful man. He could do some crazy things on the ball in that 2014 cycle. Just give us a blast, an appreciation of Mix Diskarud, Clint, because you played with a bunch.
43:41Yeah, Mr. Rude. Diskarud, he was a skillful player. you know just maybe lacked a little bit of that like physicality right to be able to truly dominate but yeah he had some great moments in the team he was a character man he was cut from different gravy God bless you mixed disc Garoud may you ride again that is it for tonight I'm headed to Seattle tomorrow Clint's spiritual fishing home first time I'll be there since the World Cup so many incredible bloody memories. I can't wait to be back. Then we're going to Northwestern for the stadium opening on Friday. Clint, you and I are back for another MIB podcast on HBO Max and True TV presented by Marriott Bonvoy.
44:29It goes down Tuesday, October the 6th, 8pm Eastern time. Come be with us. Clint, can I just thank you? It's just an honour to be with you, with you and your gun safe. We adore being with you. Thank you, bud.
44:44Hey, always good to see you, man. You keep throwing them crazy questions at me. I'm trying to remember. He's hoping bro easy there, Rollerbleeder. Big, big love, America. Encourage.
44:58The one question I get most after all that football memory making we experienced across America this summer is, how do I keep the magic going? I'd start by saying, articulate what you love the most and then build on it. first step find the team that will most probably break your heart and then add all the supporting necessities to build your weekend tradition the key to so many of mine it's walmart the place that has it all the snacks the coffee the pies but you can also get the tv at walmart the hoodie to wear on your couch get the couch if you need it and wait it gets better because their express delivery can get it right to your door so you're all set for kickoff whatever your match day needs are you Find them at walmart.com slash soccer.
