Key Themes and Discussions
The Pressure of the Holiday Season
- Overwhelming Expectations: Zoe highlights that the holiday season brings an explosion of expectations, particularly on mothers, who typically bear the brunt of planning and organizing.
- Mental Load: The term "mental load" refers to the invisible work that often falls on mothers, including managing traditions, gift-giving, and ensuring family happiness.
Reframing Festive Traditions
- Doing It Differently: Zoe encourages listeners to reassess their holiday traditions and feels empowered to say "no" to those that no longer serve their family.
- Focus on Feelings: Instead of adhering to societal “shoulds,” it’s essential to focus on the feelings that mothers wish to cultivate during the season, like joy, calm, or connection.
Practical Strategies
- Do / Ditch / Delegate Method:
- Do: Identify activities that genuinely bring joy and contribute to the desired feelings.
- Ditch: Let go of activities or traditions that no longer add value or joy; this is not a failure but a conscious choice.
- Delegate: Seek support from family and friends to share the load of holiday preparations.
Encouragement to Embrace Presence
- Presence vs. Perfection: Real magic during the holidays comes from being present and connected rather than striving for perfection or attempting to do everything.
- Challenge to List Changes: Zoe invites listeners to select three actionable changes they can implement to ease their holiday stress.
---
Key Takeaways
- Empowerment: Mothers have the right to reshape holiday traditions to better fit their family’s values and needs.
- Intentions Matter: The intention behind celebrations—creating a joyful and loving atmosphere—should take precedence over completing a checklist of holiday tasks.
- Support System: Encourage sharing responsibilities and seeking help rather than trying to manage everything alone.

We are sponsored by Wild Nutrition women's supplements And every Monday in December, I'm going to give you a little December pep talk, because let's be honest, December is the mental load Olympics. Everything ramps up and I want to be a voice that is the antidote to all the Christmas pressure and perfection so you can enjoy it much more. Now, just a quick note, I'm going to be mentioning Christmas, but this could be any celebration this December or just the pressure that comes with the end of the year. So this episode is about the shoulds and the pressures we can feel at Christmas.
0:41And I want to offer a different perspective. You can do it your way. You're allowed to say no to a tradition that doesn't work for your family anymore. You're allowed to say yes to something different. And most of all, you are allowed to take the pressure off yourself. so I think that under all the pressure and the lists and the shoulds we're actually after a feeling I think most of us want to create magic for the people that we love of course we do but I don't think that creating magic always comes from doing everything the expectations in the last five years I'd say around Christmas have exploded Christmas Eve boxes matching PJs multiple Santa visits it's insane and actually it's a lot and I have to say speaking to our community, most of it falls on our shoulders.
1:33And now a quick word from our sponsors.
1:40So the first step is to think about how you want Christmas to feel. We are always after a feeling. It's not about the Christmas Eve box. It's about the feeling that we want when we see their little faces light up. So the first step to take the pressure off is to think about the feeling you want to create this Christmas for you and your loved one. Maybe it's fun, maybe it's calm, maybe it's connection, maybe it's quiet time. And now that you've got that, think about everything that's on your list and through the lens of that feeling that you want, divide it up into three categories. So the first one is do.
2:15What are the things you actually want to do or you genuinely love doing. The things that move you toward that feeling you named. The second one is ditch. The things that you don't want or need to do this year. Maybe the traditions you're just keeping out of habit. The expectations that you've outgrown. Letting go of these is not failing. It's actually choosing yourself and your family. You're allowed to update how you do it all. The third one is delegate. Where could you allow more support in? And think, how am I sharing the load? So here's your challenge. Of that do, ditch and delegate list, choose just three things you can do differently this Christmas.
2:55Small shifts that actually create some space for you. And a gentle reminder, every mum I speak to wants the same thing at Christmas. They want to make it magical for the people that they love. And that intention is just beautiful, isn't it? But magic doesn't come from perfection. It doesn't come from doing it all. The magic actually comes from that feeling of presence and connection. And I think when you take the pressure off yourself a bit, that's often when the real magic shows up. So I am sending you so much love at the start of December and I will see you next time for another pep talk on Monday.
3:37what an incredible episode i hope you loved it too if you've got this far then i am guessing that you did so make sure that you share it with a friend and subscribe so you never miss an episode and i will see you thursday for more see you next time
