In short

A “My friend called me out!” MTGM EXTRA episode mixing pregnancy/baby-shower talk, trad-wife book recommendations, celebrity relationship envy, and a listener question about whether harmless flirting/touching at weddings crosses a line.

Guests/backgrounds

Two hosts (Joanne and Vogue) banter throughout; no other named guests. They’re mothers (four kids mentioned) and discuss pregnancy/postpartum experiences.

Key claims

“Harmless” touching (arms/torso) may still bother others; postpartum is used as an excuse for behavior, but boundaries matter. Friends may call someone out due to insecurity, jealousy, or feeling the behavior went too far.

Notable examples

Baby shower “not really a baby shower,” proposed name “Whimsy”-style discussion, Dua Lipa/Callum “Trust” meet-cute, and the listener’s wedding incident where a friend criticized her flirting.

0:02Vogue Williams:This is a Global Player original podcast.

0:05Joanne McNally:You're entering into La La Land now. You're into Lulu, La La Motherland. You've got four tiny children.

0:11Vogue Williams:When I drink, I've always been pretty flirty and touchy. Arms, torso, etc. Joanne doesn't even know that I'm pregnant most of the time. I do.

0:20Joanne McNally:Every time she sees me with my bump, she's like, oh! Well, I'll tell you, now that I know its name, I'm certainly not going to forget. It's coming for all of us, isn't it? exactly you're all gonna die gotta get your plans in place

0:39Vogue Williams:Vogue you're on mute so that's not gonna

0:44Vogue Williams:I'll tell you what don't you dare tell me I'm on mute not today of all days I'm not shaming you

0:51Joanne McNally:I'm just stating the facts

0:52Vogue Williams:if I'm on mute you leave me on mute

0:55Joanne McNally:Vogue is she's we don't do What would we say?

1:00Vogue Williams:I feel like you just have those, I'm already in a better mood, but you ever have those days where you just feel like crying and I have cried. I nearly cried in the gym. Then I cried on my bike home. I always worry that someone will see me and be like, I just saw her crying on her bike. Like what was so bad that she was crying?

1:22Joanne McNally:Maybe you're even birthed to a town crier of sorts.

1:25Vogue Williams:Oh God. No, do you know what's getting me? I have that thing that back pain that's just like it's like it's like arse pain to be honest with you but not a good not a good arse pain I don't know if there are there are good arse pains I'm sure not my bag but there are good arse pains okay this isn't a good arse pain

1:43Joanne McNally:strong opener she's still saying good arse pain she's she's trying to she's trying to find it out there and she's struggling dig dig yeah okay

1:55Vogue Williams:okay I'm gonna buy a little a little cooler pack for my RS. I've decided I can't sit for too long because it just gets too sore.

2:03Joanne McNally:Well, do you know what? I have seen from my extensive research for my garden design that you can buy these ring seats that you put in the freezer and sit in them because ever since I slashed up my paddling pool, I'm looking for a more alternative option. And you can sit on these like frozen ass donut rings, which I'll buy you with.

2:24Vogue Williams:Oh my, I'm sorry, you don't have Prime. I'd rather buy my own. This is a really, this is an emergency, Joanne.

2:32Joanne McNally:Do I have to get you another baby present? Like this is fucking, this is getting out of control at this stage.

2:36Vogue Williams:No, I already told you, you don't have to come to the baby shower. Thank God. I would like to mention about my baby shower before people, there's two things I'll mention, right? The first thing about the baby shower, I don't, it's not a baby shower as such. I just want to get my friends and hosts together because it will be the last time I see them because I won't be able to fly back soon and I'm going to get them, I'm getting so much booze because I just want to see everyone get drunk and happy and have everyone up for food. That is essentially the baby shower. We will go out for lunch, Joanne, and I will get you just as drunk.

3:07Joanne McNally:Can I ask why you have to make a public statement in defense of your baby shower?

3:12Vogue Williams:Because I just think it's a bit much. Do you know that? I do. I think it's a bit much. And I know it is, but I'd like to point out that it's not that kind of baby shower. And also, I'm just going to warn everyone, the name we love is fucked. Okay? it's mad

3:26Joanne McNally:oh god it's mad also can I just say Vogue in your defence having four kids is fucked so like everything associated with the fourth kid is also gonna be away with the fairies do you know what I mean because you're entering into La La Land now you're into Lulu, La La Mother Land you've got four tiny children

3:45Vogue Williams:almost almost

3:46Joanne McNally:almost and yes

3:47Vogue Williams:Joanne flinched at the name

3:49Joanne McNally:and that made me go oh it's a it's a it's a big name I was just I was I know you like Theodore was a heavy hitter and I know you like a name and I love a name I like naming shows you like naming babies and yeah I was a bit taken aback I mean the screaming was a bit much but I apologise for that

4:15Vogue Williams:It's such a big first name we're going to do a normal middle name just in case so the baby can choose

4:21Joanne McNally:Yeah, I think that's a good shout

4:23Vogue Williams:it's the heaviest hitter yet isn't it you'd have to say of the of the four it's the heaviest hitter well i listen my name's vogue i remember once benny's dad this is no joke he actually said what's her middle name would she mind going by that

4:44Vogue Williams:maria's a lovely name and spenny was like no dad i think i think she's 33 now so i think

4:50Joanne McNally:her name is not like has she ever considered it's more like is she up for it because we'd really appreciate it if she did

4:58Vogue Williams:I love David's honesty I have to say nothing he says offends me because he actually just means it in good in good jest yes well fair enough fair enough I'm bringing I'm bringing the Matthews family name down oh god

5:13Joanne McNally:cheapo well as I've always said folk as I've always said you're lucky you're attractive because if you weren't, you'd be a big, you'd be walking around just a big figure of irony and then you'd be, can you imagine the Daily Mail? Can you imagine the carnage in the comments then? Hopefully the baby is hot. That's all I'll say because they're going to need to be at least an 8 out of 10 to carry off this name.

5:42Vogue Williams:Joanne doesn't even know that I'm pregnant most of the time. I do. Every time she sees me with my bump, she's like, oh.

5:49Joanne McNally:well I'll tell you now that I know its name I'm certainly not going to forget but you don't now you know that's all I had to do

5:56Vogue Williams:now you know

5:58Joanne McNally:you should have told me the whimsical name from day one and I would have remembered for the whole pregnancy

6:04Vogue Williams:do you know that one who's married to Lucky Blue Nara

6:07Joanne McNally:oh I do indeed the child wife

6:09Vogue Williams:I mean her the names one of her kids is called Whimsy something and I kind of love the names like they're so out there.

6:18Joanne McNally:And I am kind of only half teasing you. I do think it is a cool name.

Read the full transcript

6:23Vogue Williams:Oh, it's a cool name. I'd love to be called it. I mean, I couldn't pull it off, but

6:27Joanne McNally:I would love to be called it. Speaking of that trad wife, I have another book recommendation for the book club that doesn't exist and the books we never read.

6:34Vogue Williams:I know what you're going to say because somebody else recommended me this. A publisher and said it was one of the best books she's read all year.

6:40Joanne McNally:Yeah, it's the book of the summer. If that thing exists and it does on TikTok. There's all of these pages like, what hot girls are reading this summer? Because you know the way reading is like a thing now. Yeah. And I'm like, oh, oh, I'll be a hot girl for the summer. What'll I read? Two book recs. Once I finish Lost Lambs. Once I finish Lost Lambs, you can have it. Okay, good. I'm going to order the ones you're about to mention now. Go on. By Madeleine Cash. And it's the quotes on the front. I mean, imagine getting these. Megan Nolan, who I, she, one of my favourite books, Acts of Desperation, I think it was.

7:12Joanne McNally:She gave her a quote and Lena Dunham says, a voice like no other. and sure then I was in like Flynn. The book that I was actually talking about, which I will, I think will be next on the hit list, is the one that it's all over the talk, the book talk. It's Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke and it's about an internet famous trad wife, like that woman, and she posts all, you know, she's all into the sourdough baking and raising her own chickens and cooking her own eggs and all. And that, well, I'm cooking her own eggs, having the chickens lay the eggs, you know, collecting the eggs, I'd say. I mean, we can all cook an egg.

7:45Joanne McNally:It's not a flex. And then the book, it's like a bit of a time travel book and then she wakes up back in the day where she's forced to live like that. And that's the book. But apparently it's kind of based on that woman, Nara.

8:00Vogue Williams:Well, I ordered it, but I'd like to caveat that by saying it is only on hardback. It's important to just...

8:07Joanne McNally:Folk, you are a published author. You cannot keep talking people out of buying hardback books. I won't allow her. I just bought it.

8:14Vogue Williams:I just bought it myself. I just I prefer I just don't know why we have to be like it's just I prefer hardback on the shelf and then I like what is available on paperback at the moment what can you get on paperback slags free willy free willy the old classics yeah black beauty I'm trying to get you to promote your own book oh big mate fucking hell oh my god

8:38Joanne McNally:I've always got one on hand do you want to bring one for you that is fucking hilarious sorry

8:45Vogue Williams:Let's just make a list of books you can get on.

8:47Joanne McNally:That is hilarious.

8:50Vogue Williams:We went back as far as Free Willy. I don't know if that's even out on book. It's a film. We went way back.

8:56Joanne McNally:Canterbury Tales.

9:00Joanne McNally:Romeo and Juliet. All the classics. Yeah, there's obviously some system in the book land where they don't bring itself back for a while for whatever reason, I don't know.

9:08Vogue Williams:I do like a hardback on the shelf. I'd actually like to have both. So sometimes I do buy both. I bought Adam Kay's book about six times because I just kept buying it for different people because I thought they'd love it. Books are the new lava lamp. Books are the new lava lamp. Did you know what? You are dead right. Speaking of books. Yeah.

9:28Joanne McNally:I don't envy people's relationships. I really don't. In general, there's no, I'm not looking around being like, God, I wish I had that or I wish I was in that. Look, at times, is it lonely, hard, dull and depressing? Yes. But mostly, I enjoy myself. okay someone actually I read something the other day they were like every time I think I want to be in a relationship every time I think I want a boyfriend someone else's boyfriend sends me a fire emoji likes my stuff yeah that was it likes my stuff and then I remember I don't want one but there's one relationship that I'm looking at at the moment and I'm like that's that's stunning yeah obviously you guys are excluded in this conversation Dua Lipa oh yeah yeah and Callum who's the second name I do not know

10:13Vogue Williams:Turner I've just made that up

10:15Joanne McNally:Dua Lipa I think you could be right

10:17Vogue Williams:you know I think I could be I saw are you talking about the pictures of them papped at their wedding I was like God they are doing a lot there's a lot of smiling

10:25Joanne McNally:I feel like Dua Lipa it's kind of a funny thing to say she's having a moment because it's Dua Lipa I mean she's been having a moment for several years now but she never quite hit the heights of the Charlie XCX the Taylor Swifts or the Ariana Grandes or she just didn't have the same I don't know like kind of I mean she still did a lot of arena. I saw her at Wembley. A hundred percent. But you know the way I remember reading something about this was this opinion piece. Now, obviously, I just took on the opinion as my own. It might not be correct at all. But they were saying that like she doesn't have that real cult following in the same way.

10:57Joanne McNally:She has a huge following. She's a huge star. But she does great stuff. She's great for recommendations and books and all that jazz. She's obviously, you know, well-read, smart, cool, funny, all those things. Tick, tick, tick. Good at yoga. Good at yoga. Loves going to the gym. She's got a great voice. she's got a great voice and she can dance she started out a bit stiff

11:14Vogue Williams:but she's got moves now she did I mean there is hope for well I don't know if there's hope for me because I've really tried but there is hope for a lot of you because Dua Lipa was not a good dancer and that's no shade because she is a sensational dancer now

11:28Joanne McNally:well she says it herself she's like yeah look she was saying something recently there like what do you think your biggest gift to the world has been so far and she was like the memes that used to go around of me not being able to dance she used to kind of shimmy but the way she met Callum. Now this to me was, I was like wow, I'm missing out on something here. They were at a event, someone said a house party which I, and then they were reading a book but they could have been reading a book at a house party because then they sound like shit crocks so I wouldn't envy the relationship at all but they were both, they met somewhere and they got chatting and she was reading they were reading the same book in the same location

12:10Vogue Williams:I think they might have met in a hotel or something it was a meet cute like that but you're right that is how they met

12:16Joanne McNally:and they were both reading the same book and they're like oh we're both reading the same book and it's a book called Trust and then he said how far away are you and she said oh I've just finished the first chapter and he said me too we're clearly on the same page

12:29Vogue Williams:yeah I know

12:32Joanne McNally:and I'd say I'd say they're getting stuck in

12:37Vogue Williams:and also I think he's going to be the, there's a chance he's the new Bond. Imagine. Jesus. Power couple.

12:43Joanne McNally:Yeah. Wow. Anyway, I was, do you know when you're kind of like half actually, half repulsed, half envious. It did might be questioned myself a little bit. I was like, oh Jesus, I put in a shift on Hinge when you're at the news.

12:58Vogue Williams:I used to be, I've been quite envious of Dua Lipa for ages. I remember last summer I was like trying on these shorts because she wears all these like little cute shorts and like they're just like really tight little hot pants and I was trying to try them on and I was like, fucking hell, I do not look like Julie putting them.

13:14Joanne McNally:Well, no, I mean, we are in our 40s now and that's not to say, I mean, women should dress however they want at any age. But when I was doing my big clear-out, I found a pair of hot pants that I actually wore on when we shot that TV show and I beat that. Okay. And they have like... I don't even remember a hot pant. Well, they're what I would call, yeah, they're short shorts with kind of crystal diamantes hanging off the arse oh yeah yeah yeah yeah they were lovely well they were of their time i tried them on for to see how ridiculous they were and i was like oh well i'm gonna and i and i and i'm i like to talk positively about women aging but it was one i was like oh there's a there's a mutton dressed as a lamb it was the it was the it was the epitome of mutton putting on the lambs diamante shorts and i was like oh no these have to go now i am self-aware enough to know no one wants to see the ass cheek through a diamante curtain of a 43 year old woman especially one who barely leaves

14:20Vogue Williams:the house i know it is sad when you think that you can't wear certain things like i i get myself into an absolute fuss every single day trying stuff on I'm like I can't bear this

14:35Vogue Williams:Hi guys Love the Pod keeps me up to date with current shenanigans and a great laugh I have a question I'm married with two young children when I drink I've always been pretty flirty and touchy arms, torso etc my husband is well aware as in her own or someone else's What's the et cetera? Like, is it below the waist, et cetera? I know, yeah.

15:01Joanne McNally:Torso arms, et cetera, would suggest. Tickle, tickle. Yeah, would suggest you're grabbing these lads in the crotch. I'm going to be honest. Now this seems like a HR issue, which I'm not sure we're qualified to answer, but go on.

15:18Vogue Williams:My husband is well aware and is not bothered, as he knows it would never go any further. I'm also always honest with him. At a recent wedding, a friend of mine called me out for how I behaved with a few male guests. Are you going around jockeying everyone? It's fine. My husband knows he's not bothered. She's touching their arms and torsos and that's it.

15:44Joanne McNally:She's like, hopefully banging some lad on the grass. It's like croquet. With the pims in one hand. And a hand fan in the other.

15:56Vogue Williams:He's fine, he knows. Oh, okay. I know for a fact it was nothing beyond flirting or harmless touching. And I really enjoyed some appreciation in my postpartum phase.

16:07Joanne McNally:This is the thing. Like, this is the thing. We all need to feel wanted. We just do. And I don't think getting married changes that or being in relationships changes that.

16:18Vogue Williams:the amount of shit I'm going to blame on postpartum you won't believe it I can't wait it's fine

16:28Joanne McNally:it's postpartum yeah did you see you were just you were just photographed leaving sceptice house at 5am with your hair postpartum yeah I'm postpartum okay just looking for a bit of a validation bit of a lift yeah for morale

16:43Vogue Williams:would you deny me that yeah

16:46Joanne McNally:I'm your wife. Would you deny me some bit of happiness, but a spartan?

16:56Vogue Williams:Selfish gaslighting bastard.

17:04Vogue Williams:Oh, I can't wait. That is honestly the greatest excuse I've ever heard in my life. I am postpartum. I can do, I'll just go in and start robbing self, which is blind. I'm postpartum. You've got free reign. You're free reign. You're the Winona Ryder. Educate yourself. You've got a year. Do you think that's acceptable to a postpartum woman? Do you? You've got a year. Yeah.

17:36Joanne McNally:Don't touch me. Get your hands off me. I'm postpartum. I will deliver back this Faberge egg in my own time.

17:47Vogue Williams:Okay. I told my husband and he laughs as he knows this is how I can get when I've had a few too many drinks. Have I crossed a line or is it harmless? Would love your take. What did she do? To be honest with you, I wouldn't appreciate that. Yeah. I wouldn't appreciate any touching, anything like that. I don't want dancing, no flirting. No, thanks. Unless it's me and I'm postpartum.

18:14Joanne McNally:Yes, of course. Then you can do as you like.

18:20Joanne McNally:I can't wait to see your face down in a bush in your knickers at Cheltenham.

18:29Joanne McNally:Well, I guess we don't really know what she did. Was it just the touching of the torso, etc.?

18:36Vogue Williams:Sounds like it, I think. Are we sure about that? Because this feels like, why is your friend annoyed? It feels like to me you were pulling trousers and stuff down.

18:44Joanne McNally:Well, I actually, do you know what? That's interesting. I actually spoke to someone recently who said that they pulled up a friend of theirs who they thought was acting inappropriately. Like as in like flirting. Yeah. And I was kind of shocked. I was like, why did you bring it up? And she was like, well, I know they're her husband and I just don't think it's on. And I was like, yeah, I mean, I would probably just privately not think it's on. I don't think I would bother saying it really. I mean, it's her marriage. Do you know what I mean? Like it's not really her friends. job. If anything, she should be like, get it, girl, slay.

19:17Joanne McNally:Is that not what we do? Should we not be encouraging?

19:20Vogue Williams:Yeah, in our position, on this side of the fence, that's what we do, yes. On the other side of the fence, no.

19:25Joanne McNally:I also would say, maybe this is, you know, the kind of little bit of relief, the release for her that she gets, which means she might never actually act on it, that she just gets the validation of it, knowing that she can, you know, that she's still got it, as they say. well if your husband doesn't mind

19:43Vogue Williams:I guess that's that's fine but like were you annoying your friends fella or something because like the postpartum shit won't fly with that I don't think

19:52Joanne McNally:why was your friend getting involved unless you see see it's a complicated situation I'd like more information the friend might be feeling a bit low on herself and maybe she doesn't have the confidence to do the flirting and then when she sees you doing it it kind of triggers her because as we know we're all just projecting our own bullshit on everyone else and maybe she it irritated her and she was like why can't I do that I don't have the confidence or I don't think I'm attractive enough or I am locked in a bad marriage you know this could be really deep

20:22Vogue Williams:or maybe you were just you just went a little bit overboard and you took it too far there is that there is that side to it too but listen well thanks everyone for listening and thanks for the very valid excuse I'd love flirting tips to be honest at the moment

20:37Joanne McNally:I think if I liked a guy I'd just punch him in the face and run away. I've lost all strategy. So I admire this woman. If your light's on, engage. Flash that light. We don't have flirting tips, but in terms of something

20:51Vogue Williams:that you did ask for and something that we do have and coming up in the Friday episode, responses to your questions from an actual embalmer. Oh, yeah. Yeah, I did hear about that.

21:03Joanne McNally:Excellent. Brilliant.

21:05Vogue Williams:Do you ask us on Friday for that?

21:07Joanne McNally:Brilliant. That's an exciting time.

21:10Vogue Williams:I know, I'm doing coming ups now. Yeah. What an uplifting episode you have to look forward to on Friday. More death chat. We're excited.

21:21Joanne McNally:We are. We're heavy on the death chat, I will say. But Sherlock, it's coming for all of us, isn't it? Exactly. You're all going to die. Got to get your plans in place.

21:33Joanne McNally:That's why that woman, flirt your tits off. You're going to be embalmed. You could be embalmed tomorrow.

21:39Vogue Williams:did you see that girl I think it was on TikTok and she was in the graveyard with her parents and she was like they're just checking out their forever home

21:50Joanne McNally:so grim anyway we're alive for now we're alive for now and I think that's the main that's something good to focus on enjoy yourselves bye everyone see you on Friday
