Podcast Episode Notes: Newsweek Radio - Top 5 Ways to Disarm MAGA From a Never Trumper
Episode Overview In this episode, Jesse Edwards, a conservative libertarian, shares strategies for engaging in political conversations across the aisle without losing one's patience or sense of humor. The discourse emphasizes the importance of moving beyond identity politics and focusing on common human experiences and values.
Key Themes and Concepts
- The Problem with the Current Political Climate
- Politics has polarized conversations, turning citizens into "algorithm zombies."
- Many feel that political identities overshadow common humanity.
- The media and social platforms fuel division for profit, creating a cycle of outrage.
- Identity Politics and Engagement
- Edwards argues that race and gender should not be the primary focus in conversations.
- He encourages listeners to drop labels and engage as humans first.
- Moderate Middle Ground
- The "moderate middle" represents a significant portion of the population that feels politically orphaned.
- Edwards believes that these moderates can facilitate real conversations and solutions.
- Call for a Centrist Revolution
- The episode advocates for a "radicalized, centrist revolution" to reject extremes from both sides of the political spectrum.
- Moderates should unite to challenge the divisive narratives perpetuated by both far-left and far-right ideologies.
Top Five Strategies to Disarm MAGA
- Drop Moral Superiority
- Engage as equals rather than coming off as condescending or missionary-like.
- Speak Plain American
- Avoid jargon and use straightforward language. Terms like "equity" and "framework" should be replaced with relatable concepts like "freedom" and "family."
- Understand the Anger
- Recognize that many MAGA supporters feel invisible rather than simply hateful. Validating their feelings can foster better communication.
- Acknowledge Your Side's Hypocrisy
- Admitting flaws within one's own group can build respect and foster open dialogue.
- Discuss Values Before Politics
- Start conversations with shared values (freedom, safety, pride) before diving into political policy discussions.
Broader Implications
- Extremism as the Enemy
- Edwards posits that the real enemy is extremism rather than any particular political faction.
- Both left and right need to recognize how they are being played against each other for profit.
- Culture War Dynamics
- Moving past identity politics is essential to avoid further division and to return to rational discourse.
- The Influence of Big Tech and Government
- Edwards warns against the "big tech government media complex" that benefits from societal division and outrage.
Conclusion Edwards reflects on the need for a human-first approach in political discussions, prioritizing individual rights and shared values over partisan identity. He concludes by expressing a desire to form a movement focused on these ideas, encouraging listeners to engage in more constructive conversations.
Final Thoughts
- Listeners are encouraged to step out of their ideological echo chambers and engage with those who think differently.
- It’s crucial to remember that everyone is human first, beyond their political affiliations.

That's the first thing that you're going to need to understand if you ever want a conservative to even consider listening to anything that you have to say. We'll unpack that and get to my top five ways to disarm MAGA in just a minute. But today we're talking about how to speak human again, because politics has turned half of the country into algorithm zombies. This one is for the people who do not worship at the altar of left or right, but still believe in common sense and conversation.
0:30And you're going to need to check these weapons of identity politics at the door if you want to join the real conversation at the big kids table that's meant to include everyone. Because you are not your skin color, you are not your gender, you are human first. And if you ever expect to break free of the algorithms that are controlling the narrative, you're going to need to act accordingly to get to the next level. If you don't want people like Donald Trump to keep winning, you're going to have to learn how to adapt to the new realities of our time and learn how to speak the language. And for the specific argument of this video, I'm mostly talking to my liberal friends because conservative ones will already largely agree with much of what I'm about to say in this direction, which is why you should pay attention on the left because this is how you disarm the MAGA hats.
1:17It's a reverent news talk and opinion with a both sides agenda and a touch of satire for good measure. It's Newsweek Radio. I'm Jesse Edwards. So my conservative friends are an interesting group of people. I get along with most of them, at least, you know, the ones who are okay with the idea that I'm sort of a political hermaphrodite, or politically homeless, or politically unhoused, political person experiencing homelessness, if you will. But it's not easy being cheesy in the middle of the road these days, even though the moderate middle probably makes up the majority of us in a lot of ways, especially when we step away from our keyboards and go outside and touch some grass, and actually meet the neighbors who vote differently than we do just to realize that they are in fact not monsters.
1:59Look, if the left thinks that you're on the right and the right thinks that you're on the left, you're probably thinking for yourself and I'm starting to believe that this is, you know, my audience. Sadly, I don't believe that anyone in mainstream media or YouTube for that matter caters to this specific crowd because everybody seems to have an agenda right now. And the politically orphaned middle deserves a home that doesn't insult its intelligence. My only agenda is that both sides have absolutely lost their marbles and it's up to us regular folks who are not intimidated by different perspectives to band together to save our country.
2:31Yeah, that's all. Save the country. I know. It's a tall order to say the least, but I'm openly calling for a radicalized, centrist revolution. One where the extremist moderates rise up to collectively reject and drown out the noise that's coming from the far left and the far right. so that we can come together and lay down our weapons of identity politics and take back our country from the deep state swamp monsters that control both sides of our two-party system and both sides of the ever-toxic national discourse that has run off the rails with wokeism on one side and conspiracy theories on the other.
3:03Both things that are perfectly fine to dabble in on a personal level, let me be clear, but they belong nowhere near the national conversation because it's letting flies like Trump into the house and he's laying eggs in our food. Donald Trump is the bile duct of the woke left. It's a symbiotic and codependent relationship where both sides deserve to destroy each other and the rest of us would just like to avoid being a casualty in these insane culture wars. Look, I'll get to the top five ways to disarm MAGA in just a minute, but we need to start thinking like conscientious objectors in the culture wars by refusing the rage bait that only serves to keep us fighting amongst each other so that political mutant ninja turtles like Donald Trump can seize control.
3:43Look, this should not be seen as some sort of superpower or talent for that matter, because for the vast majority of American history, this is how things worked. We largely kept our political opinions to ourselves until social media came along and started encouraging us to fight with each other just to boost ad revenue like it was a rooster fight. And this pattern continued largely unchecked for about 20 years up until now. Our collective cheese slid off the cracker in both directions like somebody secretly put LSD in the punch bowl. We have got to come to our senses and stop expecting our conservative friends to act like liberals and our liberal friends to act like conservatives.
4:18What sense does that make? I think a lot of you lefties, not all of you, but a lot of you. Forgot what real diversity looked like while you were busy worshipping it like your statist bible. Well, let me tell you, they didn't take too kindly to that. Now you're all fixing to square off in the parking lot of an invisible 7-Eleven that doesn't exist, all because Mark Zuckerberg needed another billion dollars. All dot conspiracy dot black dot helicopters. You're all being played, my friends. No, I do. I love my liberal friends and I love my conservative friends, but you're absolutely being played against each other for profit.
4:50That's the real conspiracy here. It's not a shadow government. It's rich people at a chicken fight, and we are the chickens. Tolerance doesn't mean acceptance. It means leaving people alone as long as they're not hurting anybody or taking their stuff, which is a standard issue libertarian mantra. The problem comes with the interpretation of what constitutes hurting people and taking their stuff, because to many of us, we look at the government as the main source of hurting people and taking their stuff through the form of taxation without representation. And that's why a lot of my fellow conservatives do not trust liberals, because they see liberals not only trusting this system, but worshipping at its altar as a kind of religious dietary supplement for a bunch of godless atheists.
5:27That's how they see it, not how I see it, just to be clear. The other half of the conservative movement is off in the woods chasing Bigfoot and Jewish space lasers because the intelligent half is more concerned with policing liberalism than it is its own kind at the moment. But here it is. If you want to disarm MAGA, you don't need to act like them. You just need to learn how to speak their language. So here's five ways that liberals can talk to MAGA without freaking them the hell out. Number one is probably the most important, and that's to drop the moral superiority. Just join the conversation like an equal, not a missionary, because nobody wants to be educated and they can smell condescension from a mile away.
6:01Number two, speak plain American. Cut the jargon. Nobody says equity, framework, or lived experience in real life. Just say what you mean. Freedom, fairness, respect, work, family, etc. And number three, understand the anger before you judge it. Because most MAGA folks don't actually hate the world, they just hate feeling invisible. And you don't have to agree with their take to recognize that pain. Number four, admit your side's hypocrisy once in a while. It earns respect instantly. Every tribe has its nutcases, and pretending yours doesn't makes you sound like cable news. And finally, number five, talk values before politics.
6:35Freedom, safety, pride, belonging, that's common ground. Start there. Keep the policy wonk talk between you and your own kind until you can manage these basics. It's really strange to me that the people who are in control of this country right now are so apparently insecure about where they stand. And I think it's because deep down they realize that none of this is forever. And that once the opposition weaponizes the very precedent that was set by their own team, it's going to come back and bite them on their butt. And it's going to hurt. It's a kind of imposter syndrome from my perspective, because deep down, the most rational conservatives know that Trump is a train wreck.
7:08Yet they continue to latch onto his brand because liberals freak them the hell out ten times more with their obsessions with DEI and CRT and ESG. And don't get me wrong, those lofty concepts are fine to toss around when you're having a strategy session with your own liberal kind. But it's absolutely no good for your forward-facing public image, because it's like a religion. And religion is like a penis. It's perfectly fine to have one, but it's a problem when you take it out and wave it in somebody's face that doesn't want it there. And that goes for the religion of DEI as well. Look, it's gotta go unless you want to keep losing the cultural and political and spiritual wars to people like Donald Trump.
7:46Would you rather be right or would you rather win elections? Would you rather be right or would you rather win back the hearts and minds of your average American who can get you back into the White House? And this is all assuming, of course, that you don't want to alienate yourself from the moderates, which are the people who truly make America great and always have. And look, I get it. The moderates have a really hard time at getting their extremely reasonable voices heard in a media landscape that only rewards ideological bomb throwers. But I do think there's a way around this by speaking exactly how I am to you right now.
8:16By addressing this elephant in the room from the water cooler all the way up to Washington. It is absolutely beyond the moment of time for the far left and the far right to quit barking at each other like a bunch of dumb, angry sea lions so the rest of us can hear ourselves think for a minute. The left is not the enemy. The right is not the enemy. Extremism is the enemy. And I think the only way to end this nonsense is to fight fire with fire by voicing your disgust for both sides that absolutely deserve each other as equal and opposite forces of nature. And don't tell me it's a false equivalency when both the commies and the fascists are goose-stepping down Main Street USA in opposite directions.
8:52This is an absolute clown show, and it's time to demand better for ourselves. Otherwise, we risk falling down a never-ending rabbit hole of engineered disinformation that big tech and big government can and will use against us to keep us fighting each other for profit. Beware the big tech government media complex, because they have masterfully built a mutually beneficial feedback loop that runs on outrage and outrage alone. The more divided we are, the more time we spend online with every click and share an angry comment, which is data and data is money. Tech companies then sell that data to advertisers, which keeps their stock prices high and drives donations to the politicians.
9:30And they don't want to fix anything when they can just point fingers and keep their base angry enough to vote for them. While big tech profits off our attention, big government profits off our division. And the public is stuck in the middle arguing about everything under the sun when there's much better things to be doing with our time as human beings on this planet for the short amount of time that we all have. Of course, we're all extremely worried about the direction our country is heading in. I'd say that's a pretty good indicator that we should not be doing the same things that brought us to this place over and over again while expecting different results.
10:00And to be honest with you, I'm not entirely sure what to do with all of this yet, but somebody called me out on YouTube the other day, and rightfully so. Follow us at Newsweek Radio on YouTube if you haven't already. If anything, just to join the community and be part of the comments around the crazy things I like to talk about. But this listener said something along the lines that if I believe the things I'm talking about, then I should just stop complaining and start offering some real solutions. And this YouTube subscriber of mine is absolutely right, so I'm actually starting to look into the process of starting an actual movement of some kind to push a human-first agenda.
10:32Human-first and post-allegiance in the sense that our rights as individuals come before politics, before algorithms, before weaponized identity politics, and before the state. I'm just getting started, but today we're out of time. So until we can do it again, it's Newsweek Radio. I'm Jesse Edwards. Catch you next time. Bye. And we say bye-bye. Newsweek Radio is a member of The Trust Project.
