In short
The episode is a commentary on Bill Maher’s Real Time lineup and a broader argument that Donald Trump embodies “liberalism” rather than conservatism. The host praises Maher as a platform for “unvarnished” political conversation and mentions a recent legal dispute involving Laura Loomer’s $150 million lawsuit after Maher joked about her sleeping with Trump.

0:41Yes, there have been some duds, but I still think that that show is one of the few places where you can get real conversation around politics without an agenda on mainstream television these days. I mean, sure, Bill Maher has been kissing Trump's butt for the last year, but hopefully that will all change after that judge tossed out Laura Loomer's$150 million lawsuit against Maher and HBO after he joked about her sleeping with Trump after photos came out with her up in Trump's personal space on camera. But Bill Maher is an original gangster of free speech who has taken a lot of grief from religious folks of all persuasions over the years, including radical Islam.
1:21And I think that his new rules segment at the end of the program each night is some of the best political commentary out there. So I do love the show, and I always have. It's a platform for real, unvarnished, and difficult conversations while also being sure to laugh at the absurdity of it all. Now, John Fetterman is a great guest out of the gate because he's a Democrat who Democrats have learned to hate because he doesn't fit neatly inside of their little checklist of what they think a Democrat should act and sound like. No, I don't care that he sides with Trump occasionally. He's a U.S. Senator, for crying out loud.
1:56It's his job to work with the President, no matter who they are. That's why I got into broadcasting and not politics. And he will do as he sees fit as a representative of the people that he serves. I've heard him say that much on camera, paraphrasing of course, but Fetterman is a very interesting cat, to say the least. He just comes across as this oafish kind of regular guy who might not have a lot of things going on, but he's much sharper than he looks or even sounds based on his speech patterns. No, he's not the best public speaker, but he's got a lot more interesting things to actually say than most people who are.
2:32Anyway, he's the opening convo tonight on Real Time with Bill Maher. A friendly reminder to like and subscribe to Newsweek Radio if you want to hear me talking about things that happened the day I'm talking about them, as opposed to like three or four days later after this episode of Real Time is aired. Make sure you like and subscribe over on Apple or Spotify. Thanks. And no, I'm not promoting HBO, but I do think that if you like what I present here on Newsweek Radio, you'll probably already watch Bill Maher, and that's why I'm talking about it, other than the fact that I'm looking forward to the convo personally.
3:02Yeah, Dan Crenshaw is a solid guest too. One of those Republicans who have been branded as a heretic by his fellow conservatives for occasionally daring to disagree with our mad king, Donald Trump. I know, how dare he, right? Interesting contrast of guests there between him and Fetterman for sure. Because Democrats hate Fetterman and Republicans hate Crenshaw for virtually the same reasons. That was always one of my weird childhood fantasies. Just seeing a serving vice president of the opposite party of the president. Yes, I was a strange kid. And I still am. But just imagine a team like Fetterman and Crenshaw teaming up to run for office and to destroy this ridiculous war between Republicans and Democrats, liberals and conservatives once and for all.
3:43It probably has a better chance than any sort of independent ticket, but you'd never get the party nomination the way things are today. It would take a miracle. But it's fun to fantasize. Yeah, then there's Donna Brazell, who is always hilarious the way she hits on Bill Maher enough to make him blush on camera, which cannot be an easy task. She's hilarious. And no, I don't agree with most of what she thinks or says, but she represents to me, at least, the kind of liberal that I could and would hang out with at the church potluck anytime, which is how things should be with a much higher frequency in this country, a higher frequency of conversation and at a higher frequency.
4:18We should all have liberal and conservative friends. We do, mostly. All have both liberal and conservative friends who we know how to interact with in real life without letting things get weird, generally speaking. I mean, oftentimes it is the smartest thing to avoid talking about politics altogether with your friends and family, but even then it kind of slips out occasionally. And then we all brace ourselves for a potential clash of worldviews and negotiate those conversations diplomatically to the best of our abilities, that's at least how things tend to work themselves out in real life. But online, we turn into absolute monsters, don't we?
4:53I'm not talking about all the bots and all the fake accounts that are just there to get people angry. I'm talking about the tendency all of us have to be just a little bit meaner, a little bit more entrenched in our ideas and beliefs, and a little less forgiving when it comes to putting forward the kind of due diligence required to produce productive communication. And I am certainly not the first person to notice this. Most of us know what's happening, I think, at this point. And thankfully, I see more and more people every day stepping forward who are willing to take a stand against this blind, mindless kind of division that has infected the body politic of our nation.
5:28I am not saying that you should be okay with Trump and company and the things his followers allow him to get away with. But I am saying that if you can't understand why so many on the MAGA side of the conversation are willing to burn it all down, you're always going to have people like Trump returning to power time and time again until you learn your lesson. The new outpatient center in Schaumburg has positively impacted my entire family. Lurie Children's new outpatient center in Schaumburg is making life a little easier for families in the northwest suburbs. My kids are in such good hands and our travel time is cut in half.
6:02This all-in-one location offers a full range of pediatric services, all from the number one-ranked children's hospital in Illinois. Make an appointment at luriechildrens.org slash Schaumburg. Lurie Children's, all for your one. You know, it's the funniest thing about liberals. They always want you to empathize with the bad guy because he's just misunderstood, after all. Oh, and he was bullied as a child by his extended family and made fun of his entire life for having the vocabulary and intellect of an eight-year-old boy and spent 40 years being mocked by Manhattan elites who treated him like a tacky game show host with gold toilets and bad hair until he finally snapped, left the Democrat Party, and decided to become the president out of pure spite.
6:48I've always said that Trump is true liberalism personified, because Trump is what happens when 1980s celebrity culture, reality television, tabloid narcissism, and pure individual self-expression achieve sentience. He's not the product of conservatism. He's the final form of American ego liberation. A man whose entire ideology is basically, I do what I want, when I want, and I get what I want when I need it, no matter what the cost or who I need to trample on to get it. That's Donald Trump. Conservatives used to believe in restraint and discipline, humility, fiscal responsibility, moral consistency, and respecting institutions.
7:27And now their leader is a spray-tanned casino owner from Manhattan who changes political positions mid-sentence, insults people for sport, lives behind the facade of his own brand, and turned American politics into an ever-ending episode of The Apprentice. It's not Barry Goldwater. That's not Ronald Reagan. Trump talks and behaves less like a traditional conservative than an aging counterculture yuppie who accidentally wandered into Republican politics because liberals became too annoying to tolerate him. He's emotionally impulsive, obsessed with fame, permanently offended, sexually aggressive, and powered almost entirely by his own ego.
8:10In another timeline, an alternate reality or a parallel dimension, that exact personality becomes the liberal he probably always was. A celebrity activist in designer glasses, screaming at corporations demanding cultural revolution, and calling everybody who disagrees with them a threat to democracy. All of this while dancing non-stop to a song widely accepted as the gay national anthem, despite his wife's constant pleas for him to stop. She says it's so un-presidential. and she hates when I dance to at the end to
8:49she hates when I dance to what's sometimes referred to as the gay national anthem you know she hates it you know that song was number 5 32 years ago and it went to number 1 32 years later there's never been anything like it never hit number 1 it was number 5 32 years ago and it went to number 1 for months during the last months of the camp we love that song I feel so powerful I'll walk into that audience I'll walk in there I'll kiss everyone in that audience I'll kiss the guys and the beautiful women and everybody I'll just give you a big fat kiss That's it for today That's it for this week It's Newsweek Radio I'm Jesse Edwards And until we can do it again Catch you next time Bye And we say bye bye Newsweek Radio is a member of the Trust Project But this guy This guy This is a guy that was all man.
9:46This man was strong and tough. And I refuse to say it, but when he took showers with the other pros, they came out of there, they said, oh, my God. That's unbelievable. I had to say it. I had to say it.
From the publisher
Tonight’s episode begins with what may be the best lineup of the season on Real Time with Bill Maher featuring John Fetterman, Dan Crenshaw, and Donna Brazile before spiraling into a much bigger question: what if Donald Trump was never truly a conservative at all? Jesse Edwards explores the argument that Trump is liberalism personified — a product of celebrity culture, ego, emotional politics, anti-establishment rage, and the American obsession with self-expression above all else.
