In short

NFL Daily previews Week 2 late and primetime games, focusing on matchups, injuries, and what each team must do to win.

Guests

Greg Rosenthal (host; NFL analyst) and Jordan Roderick (co-host; NFL analyst). They discuss Joe Buck’s Monday Night Football contract and use recent Week 1 film/Next Gen stats.

Key claims and notable examples

  • Giants vs Rams (Rams -7.5): Giants’ physical run game (37 carries, ~50% success) is the path to beat Los Angeles; Rams must stop duo/power and handle Aaron Donald (uncertain but expected). Rams’ defense may be vulnerable to physical inside running.
  • Cardinals vs Seahawks (Cardinals +3.5, Drew Lock starting): Seahawks’ defense (e.g., Rodney Thomas, Julian Love) can disrupt; Jacoby Brissett is “unbothered” by pressure. Seahawks’ run-blocking may be stronger than pass protection.
  • Jaguars vs Broncos: Liam Cohen’s Jaguars run identity; Nate Borkutcher moving people in the run game; Trevor Lawrence’s seam/throw highlights.
  • Chargers vs Raiders (Chargers -6.5): Max Crosby’s pass-rush wins vs tackles; Chargers’ offense looked non-functional outside scripted drives; Lad McConkey injury uncertainty.
  • Chiefs vs Colts (Chiefs -6.5): Chiefs’ run game and offensive line (Khalil Benson; Kenneth Walker “tractor-like” inside runs) vs Colts’ linebacker issues.
  • Cowboys vs Commanders: Commanders’ defense impressed (Nick Cross; Durante Jones/Christian Parker cohesion).
  • 49ers vs Dolphins: 49ers favored heavily; expectation of another high-scoring game.

0:38Welcome to NFL Daily, where we're all just trying to get Joe Buck's money. I'm Greg Rosenthal here in the Chris Wessling Podcast Studio with Jordan Roderick. This is our preview of the week two late games and primetime games. Joe Buck, of course, calling Monday Night Football between the Giants and the Rams, just signed a six-year,$108 million contract. And you don't have to look for the guaranteed money. I think it's all guaranteed.

1:09Jourdan Rodrigue:Good for him. That's awesome. How about it? Best in the game. He worked that well because you do less there at ESPN. He doesn't have to do baseball. You get more money. It's great. So we already hit the early games, But just a couple items wanted to update you on Joe Burrow mispracticed on Wednesday with a back injury. Hightness. That's interesting. Interesting. Still sounds like he's expected to play and everything, but that's something. You had mentioned Jordan Mason of the Vikings going to injured reserve. Blake Miller, the tackle for the Lions, is out for this week. And yeah, there's some other injury news we'll sprinkle through.

1:48Not all of it good for your NFC West teams. But let's start, yes, with Monday Night Football. What a perfect matchup this turned out to be. You figured it'd be uneven. And yes, the Rams are favored by seven and a half points at home. That's not surprising. But the fact that they're the 0-1 team and that the Giants are coming in with a really impressive offensive performance in Week 1 adds a little bit of intrigue. Who caught your eye in Week 1?

2:15Jourdan Rodrigue:Week 1, which felt like about 100 years ago when the Rams played in Australia, the linebackers Nate Landman and Omar Spates because I felt like this was a vintage Kyle Shanahan game where you circle where you want the linebackers to be moved and then you move them there they did not look up to the task of defending the ways that this offense was trying to attack them particularly on the ground whether it was some of the motions that they were using with Kyle Juszczyk and others but then also the physicality of the run game to me it felt like their entire defensive line, but then also the linebackers were getting pushed off the ball, pushed out of the space that they wanted to occupy.

2:55Jourdan Rodrigue:And as a result, to me, I suspect that's part of the reason why you didn't see as aggressive of coverages from Chris Shula as they had honked about all offseason about being able to play more aggressively with Trent McDuffie and Jalen Watson, because if your linebackers are out of position, then your safeties are covering for those linebackers and then the corners have to do extra. So you might as well stay in a little bit more of a zone. So for me, all of it was bad. They were totally outclassed, you know, by the 49ers in that game with the giants coming to town as physically as they were running the ball against the Cowboys.

3:30Jourdan Rodrigue:To me, this is a sneaky, big matchup and a sneaky, big game to watch. It's a great place to start because the giants are a physical team. If, if John Harbaugh is going to do one thing with this team. I think he's going to up the level of physicality and he has a lot to work with. Their offensive line has a really high ceiling. I think if it's coached well, like the tackles are really talented. You have a first round pick at guard. Like you have some continuity on the interior in general. And so yet the thing that impressed me last week, like was that they ran it 37 times with a almost 50 % success rate.

4:08So it was a volume and effectiveness. They're not going to hit a ton of explosives, but, and I know it was against Dallas, but if you're going to beat this Rams defense and these linebackers, I think that's the best way to do it. Keep the ball away from Stafford and just keep grinding them down a little bit like the 49ers did.

4:23Jourdan Rodrigue:Well, and they did. It was infuriating at times to watch the Cowboys inability to get off the field. And I remember there has been, again, there's been Kyle Shanahan versus the Rams games where the Rams defense cannot get off the field because of the way that they can create those of more efficient downs with the run game and have that powerful attack. It bears noting that this defensive line for the Rams is going to look different again. All of a sudden, this is a Josiah Stewart, Byron Young, Puna Ford, Kobe Turner, you know, Braden Fisk, guys that are a little bit of smaller frame other than Byron Young and a team that is a little bit of a physicality so far early in the year mismatch for them.

5:03Jourdan Rodrigue:Maybe they'll get some help. I was going to say, you didn't mention one guy who's pretty strong. He was pretty strong, although, yeah, he's always trying to make a play up field in the running game. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Aaron Donald is uncertain to play as of this taping. The Giants, like the 49ers, say they're planning for him, but we won't really know until you get there. Based on how the insiders are talking, I think we do see Aaron Donald in this game. But it was a 49ers attack that hit him with a lot of duo, a lot of just power straight ahead running. I think New York is really built to do that.

5:35On the other side, what a tough matchup for the Rams offensive line. That Abdul Carter week one film was like snuff tape. I mean, it was it was crazy, man. That dude is so strong and he's got, you know, obviously good players helping him out at edge. We'll see if they can stop the run against like a better team like the Rams. I have my doubts, but at least in terms of pass protection, they are going to present a lot of problems for the Rams.

6:02Jourdan Rodrigue:Where I trust that last week was more of an outlier than not was in the passing game, particularly the perimeter passing game. I don't actually have any idea why the middle of the field wasn't being attacked or utilized more by John McVay and Matthew Stafford. I don't know why the perimeter push was happening the way that it was other than perhaps the awareness of Fred Warner and some of the improved play, you know, in the middle of the field for the 49ers. They're maybe dictating some terms. but for me, I think the perimeter is where maybe you start here. You try to attack these outside corners.

6:36Jourdan Rodrigue:It's an embattled group in New York. They made some plays in moments, but it is an embattled group overall, and you have to protect. You absolutely have to pass protect. Again, I can't stress this enough. The concerning part of what the Rams showed last week was just getting pushed, right? Just getting pushed. Matthew Stafford was off. you know the arm looked off the decisions they hit him and two of the first three drop backs and when I went to watch like the coaches I was like maybe he just got a little panicky there because you don't see that out of him often where after getting hit early he just was he just wasn't comfortable kind of throwing the ball away not accurate where the Rams were very successful in week one and will continue to be successful particularly behind Steve Avila Coleman Shelton and Kevin Dotson is running the freaking ball and they can do this.

7:30Jourdan Rodrigue:They will be able to do this against the Giants front in my opinion. And I think they can effectively, they have enough dimension in their run game to really build. And, and like, you know, you talk to these offensive linemen year over year over year. And the best thing to build physicality and build the understanding of how an offensive line and even a defensive line watching from the sideline has to grit their teeth and dig their cleats into the, in this case, the turf, um, is, is to run the ball the way that they want to run, hit the giants with duo, the way that Kyron Williams likes to run, mix up, you know, the, the, the two back system that they, that was very effective before they went away from it in the 49ers game.

8:08Jackson dart was composed for the giants last week. He looked comfortable. They, they need to find a way to change that. I think they can without miles Garrett, But like I said, those tackles can be a weapon. Isaiah likely could turn out to be one of the best free agent signings. He was dynamic. Those were difficult catches that he made. They're using him in a variety of ways. They're a physical receiver group. They're physical all around. And so I'm curious. Yeah, on both sides, seven and a half points is a lot, but I do feel pretty good about the Rams.

8:41Jourdan Rodrigue:I do too. I mean, like I know I'm shocking you by saying this, But the thing is, though, is like what what I can't what I would not be able to understand in watching this game is if Isaiah likely is able to have a similar type of game that he did last week against this Rams team, because this Rams team spent the entire offseason practicing against the deepest tight ends room at that point that we knew of in the NFL. They spent an entire offseason that they didn't get last year practicing in those like base nickel looks that could cover the tight end as well as stop the run. They worked for defending the heavier personnel that John Harbaugh and the Giants are going to want to use against them.

9:23Jourdan Rodrigue:If that doesn't does not happen in this game, to me, that is a fundamental coaching problem. I think they'll be fine. I agree that Jalen Watson gives them size and Trent McDuffie. Quentin Lake's in there. Right. Trent McDuffie looked great. Oh, like overall last week. I'm not, he did. I'm not too worried there. You do want to see Stafford use some other receivers, not just tight ends other than Puka. They tried to throw the ball six times to Devante Adams last week, only 26 yards. All the other wide receivers are just out there getting cardio. So you, you want to mix it up a little bit more. Let's stay in the NFC West.

9:58Let's go to Arizona where Jordan's Cardinals are three and a half point underdogs, even though Drew Locke is starting. It would have been worse.

10:08Jourdan Rodrigue:It would have been worse if the Cardinals did not have such a good week one. This is a Chris Myers, Mark Schlereth game. Sam Darnold was ruled out with that glute injury. And so they're not waiting around. How did you put it on the earlier show? It was a butt injury. You know, they don't want to call it that. That very unique injury. They say, I don't know how, how that happened exactly, but hopefully he'll be back soon. Because I like Drew Locke. I don't want to see him each and every week. It's why the Seahawk that caught my eye. And I almost feel bad having a Seahawk that caught my eye versus the Cardinals.

10:43But it has been a while. Just to remind people. Is Rodney Thomas. And you ask, who is Rodney Thomas? He's a former Indianapolis Colt. Like, that they just picked up off the scrap heap. Reminding me a little bit of how they got Josh Jobe at cornerback. And he was doing a lot of the things that their deep safeties love to do, closing ground, tackling well, preventing big plays. He was a big part of their operation. And I bring him up and I'll pair him with Drake Thomas, another unknown Thomas on the Seahawks, as just an example of the Seahawks having a vision for new players and getting them to fit roles for what they do well and immediately contributing to one of the best defenses we've ever seen.

11:26That's coaching. That's what great coaches do. They take your players and they make them better in their scheme. And so he was the guy who stood out to me the most. I think we'll get even worry back for this game. But even if we don't, like they will give the Cardinals offense and problems.

11:43Jourdan Rodrigue:He was awesome. You watched like the all 22 of that game and he had zero issues with where he was supposed to be at any given time, like the spatial in that defense, especially the way that they move and you really stick out similar to what we saw with the Texans last week. You really stick out if you're just the only one that's not moving on the line with everybody else because of how in sync they can play together. And I think credit to Julian Love, too, for setting the table the way that he did, playing so many different positions on the field in general, but then also really being sort of the anchor point for everything that that secondary wanted to do, including with all of the change and all of the injuries that it's dealt with over the last month or so, really making some of those splash plays, dictating terms.

12:27Jourdan Rodrigue:And I think against Jacoby Brissett, it's interesting because the one thing about Jacoby Brissett is like, whatever, he does not care whatever you're going to throw at him, like pressure wise. He's seen it all. He is going to stand in there and he is going to throw the ball. And he did. And he got knocked down a couple of times. But this last week, the Chargers pressure was not anywhere near what I think expectation was. But even when they sent extra pressure, he stood in there and he just, It was like blue jerseys flying all around. It was like a painting. He just stood in there and threw the ball.

12:59Jourdan Rodrigue:That's what he did. He just threw the ball. At this point, between the offenses that Jacoby Brissett has been in and the defenses that he's faced, that's an advantage. He's seen it all in this league where there's so much specialization. So unbothered also. Like, just totally unbothered. I forget who said it, but they were like, he should hold out again. He's underpaid. it's a really good matchup. I think Michael Wilson and Harrison and this offense is going to give them problems. Kendrick Bourne really matters for this team. Yeah. I think he had eight or nine catches last week. And so they have, it's just simple math.

13:36Jourdan Rodrigue:Everyone else is covered. Who do you throw to the other guy? Right. And, and he's a, he's a pro and you could just kind of feel him like old guy at the gym game with Jacoby that they would match well together. I'm more interested actually about the other side of the ball with drew lock at quarterback because if the Cardinals are going to pull off the upset, it's because their defense is going to show up again. I'm going to present a theory I thought about, which could be a bit of a long-term problem for the Seahawks. Maybe, maybe not. Is this team getting to be like much better as a run blocking group than they really are as a pass blocking group?

14:11I look at this group and man, they see, they seem a little attackable when you have to pass the ball and yet they have maulers. I think the interior, including everyone's favorite, like guy to pick on Anthony Bradford, like those guys can run block the hell out of the ball and Gray's able. And in general, their interior and Abe Lucas, like those are run block first guys. I don't know if I love like four run block first guys for a team that's trying to win the Superbowl, but I do think that's how they'll try to win this game and their running game could be great.

14:43Jourdan Rodrigue:Well, yeah. I mean, what you You saw Jadarian Price last week was awesome. Like you saw all the potential that we watched, you know, in the draft and on hard knocks, which is very exciting. Some of the slow-mo angles and the close-up cuts. So I don't think I'm willing to necessarily say that's a concern for me yet. I think in a game like this, where the Cardinals interior defensive line was actually pretty active in this last game. Walter Nolan, your guy, LJ Collier, Darius Robinson, actually pretty active last week against the Chargers front. and man, did the Chargers front struggle, whether their own fault or, you know, other people's fault.

15:19Jourdan Rodrigue:Like they struggled against that type of interior stuff that Nick Rallis and the Cardinals defensive line was bringing. If they can be active again, I think it's good to have that type of offensive line if you're Seattle. Can you imagine a 2-0 Cardinals team? No. Respectfully. I mean, you got Drew Locke. The schedule set up well. you looked at generally that started their schedule so tough but you looked at at Chargers home for Seahawks you're like that's 0-2 and now you're 1-0 and you get Drew Locke in the second week the numbers of their defense when they have Mack Wilson at linebacker who was everywhere last week if it wasn't for Zach Bond he might have been the best and Fred Warner I was going to say he might have been like the best off-ball linebacker last week I was like Mack Wilson was awesome for this team alright that's that's going to be a fun one I might want to watch that excuse me you keep taking games We'll see.

16:12We'll see. There's a lot of late games.

16:14Jourdan Rodrigue:There's a lot of really good games this weekend. The Jaguars and the Broncos, that's a Knick game. Yeah. He already claimed it. A Knick-Shook game. It's also an Ian Eagle and Ross Tucker game. Love that combo in week one. Love to listen to them. The Broncos are only two and a half point favorites at home. That is absolutely a different line than it would have been a week ago. I think going into week one, that would have been around four, four and a half. But after seeing what Denver put out there on Monday night, it's a short week, a little less optimism. What caught your eye with these two teams last week?

16:48Jourdan Rodrigue:I want to give Nate Borkutcher a shout out. The tight end that everybody laughed at, that the Jaguars picked, was just moving people around in the run game. Just delightful to watch. Our friend Billy, who does a lot of really fun All-22 work on social media, shared a really great highlight reel where he was able to just sort of circle the dot around Nate Borkutcher, the tight end. And to me, and the Jags playing extra personnel, like we knew they would, they broadcasted that they would the entire season. I love this because I really think we're going to have so much fun watching this Jacksonville run game in its sort of second year in the Liam Cohen system.

17:27Jourdan Rodrigue:I think that's really becoming an identity point of Liam Cohen. And Nate Borkutcher to me is emblematic of that because he really helps along with the other, you know, heavier personnel that they can use in that surface, like really changes leverage points, changes angles. They like to align the backs in different ways. They like to basically mess with your, with your defensive positioning by like half a foot, half a yard, one yard. And then that's enough. That's all they need. Because as you get as a layers of what they want to do in the run game develop and what they want to do in the past game developed down the field, you suddenly realize that space has now compounded and you're moved way the heck over further than where you want to be as a defender.

18:08Jourdan Rodrigue:And I just, I appreciate, we've seen the little pieces of it come together. And now I think we're going to see the whole canvas and they run a very different scheme than what we saw Kansas city do on Monday night and bad angles for the Broncos right after they just missed like a record amount of tackle. I was going to say, even though it's a different type of running game, like this is a defense that is better defending the pass than the run, which generally you'd take that trade off, but not if you miss 28 tackles. And you know who broke a lot of tackles last week. Been a little quiet. Tootin' Hive.

18:40Jourdan Rodrigue:Tootin' Hive. Just as we're ready to peak. We're always buzzing. We were always Tootin' Hive. We never gave up. From the draft itself, we were in the Tootin' Hive. I'm in and his role last year wasn't what fantasy footballers wanted, but I thought he showed enough. Even the raw numbers per play weren't great. And yet, I test-wise, I thought he looked great. He really looked great last week. He had seven broken tackles, three explosives, just runs hard. Yeah. I want a metric for running hard. It's an important trait of a running back. I don't know how you do that. Well, you are an MVP voter now, so this is maybe your next.

19:18Jourdan Rodrigue:I don't think you can do that. Maybe if Trevor Lawrence keeps it up, he'll be a guy that we're considering. That seam ball, that touchdown. Oh, Lord. That's, to me, a candidate, a throw of the week candidate. We are starting to track these now. We track all year for throw of the year. Week one, sometimes it's a little early. Caleb Williams throw to Cole Komet is a candidate. This Trevor Lawrence seam ball, who caught it? Is it Jacoby? I think that one was to Parker Washington. Oh, Parker. Yeah, the seam ball is Parker Washington. Yeah, and look, his focus, his sharpness, the confidence, he's picked up right where he left off by the end of the season, barring the playoffs.

19:58Jourdan Rodrigue:I just think to me, this is a fun group. Sneaky fun. I misspoke. The seam pass was actually to Josh Cameron. Again, the preseason coming through. And when you watch this play on all 22, especially, it goes through three different defenders. And Josh Cameron was a guy who I think helped to make Travis Hunter borderline unplayable at wide receiver because they don't need him. and they did play Hunter four or five snaps last week, but they are very deep. This is an awesome offense. I think they're going to come out of the gates swinging. Thanks for pulling that up because I kept trying to side-eye the highlights that we had.

20:40Jourdan Rodrigue:I was like, I just really want to watch this again one more time. The Trevor Lawrence highlights from last week were probably the best quarterback highlights, I would say, of any quarterback. Him and Tyler Shuck would be up there if you just like take the best seven or eight throws. He looked awesome. Parker Washington was doing absolutely everything. And it's a big time test for this Denver Broncos. I'm not asking you to pick most of these games, but this one's pretty interesting. Do you think the Broncos bounce back this week? They could. That's a Rod Reag hedge if I've ever heard one. Of course they could.

21:15You have to pick the game in this scenario.

21:17Jourdan Rodrigue:I don't have to do anything. Well, that's true. But I'm asking you nicely. You're not asking me nicely. Will you please pick this game? No, that's fake. That's ridiculous. What do you mean it's fake? Be authentic. Be authentic, Greg. I think it would be better for the show if we both picked this particular game because it makes people think of great Jaguars, Broncos matchups of the past. You know, maybe. Keep going. Mark Brunel and Bubby Brister. I don't know who was playing Denver. I just think it's an important game because can you imagine Denver going to 0-2 with the schedule that they have?

21:54it. It's a really important game. So I'm curious who you have winning.

21:58Jourdan Rodrigue:I find it hard to see Jacksonville slowing down more. You know, I just think they're rolling, honestly. Like I'm going to pick Jacksonville. And therefore you've set me up exactly for what you want, which is. No, because I want Jacksonville to win. I'm a hater for Denver a little bit. You know, it wouldn't It wouldn't bother me. And yet I do think Denver will win, but I don't feel strong about it at all. This is exactly what I knew was going to happen. I don't participate in your shenanigans. In this case, I will not come back at you because I have no conviction whatsoever. I want the Jaguars to win.

22:36I want that to happen. And I hope you're right. I am a little concerned, obviously, about the Denver offense, not just Bo Nix having one of the worst games of his career.

22:46Jourdan Rodrigue:The receivers were so sloppy too. Dropping passes, penalties, holding penalties, He's not being in their spots. Like, and, and Bo Nix was not good. The running game like was, they gave up on it pretty early, but it certainly doesn't profile as an explosive running game. You kind of also are tipping off like R.J. Harvey is the passing get down. And J.K. Dobbins is a little one dimensional. I'm not panicking after one week, but they're right up there with the Chargers who are, we're getting to next as the team that I feel like the most worried about. Yeah. No, not the most worried, but I think just that the fans most need and want to see a week two win and look like the team they expected.

23:27Those two and the Packers would probably be the three teams

23:29Jourdan Rodrigue:where week two feels the biggest. But the difference between them and the Chargers and the Packers is they have to play Jacksonville this week. So, like, you could play well and you could lose. Let's go to the Chargers game. Why not? They're favored by six and a half over the Raiders. A lot of points, considering it's not a home field advantage for the Chargers when they play at SoFi against the Raiders. It's a weird situation here in L.A. where both teams are the local teams. I don't think people from outside of town know the Raiders are still carried like on KCAL. You know how you're on in the preseason?

24:07Preseason star Jordan Rodrigue? You know, we treat the Raiders like a preseason local team. Like we get their local coverage too. These are our two teams. the Raiders and the Chargers. Max Crosby. I'm just going to go with an obvious name. Haven't heard a lot of talk about the Raiders' defensive effort last week. I think people just assume, well, yeah, they played the Dolphins. So, of course, they were awesome. But what really caught my attention was Max Crosby and Quidipe to a lesser degree and Malcolm Koontz to a lesser degree, but really all three of them taking turns winning against Patrick Paul and Austin Jackson.

24:44And you can tell me, oh, the Dolphins offense isn't great. Those are two guys who Paul's a rising young, good tackle. He really struggled in that game. And then Austin Jackson's guy who's paid a lot of money, started a lot of games. So it's not about Miami. It's about those individual matchups. And Crosby specifically, I thought had a ton of juice. His pass rush win rate. I got to go check it. I wouldn't be surprised if he led the league in pass rush win rate. It felt like almost every snap he was winning. So whatever the Ravens saw on that exam, it did not show up on week one. And then spinning forward here, it's a much tougher matchup.

25:20He'll mostly draw Joe all, but also Rayshon Slater. He goes on both sides. It's just a good matchup. And if the Raiders can have a pass rush on the outside, especially, then the Chargers could cave in a little more even than they did a week ago.

25:34Jourdan Rodrigue:Yeah, it's a troubling thing for the Chargers to me because they looked so non-functional. functional outside of their scripted drive as an offense. At times it was a little bit stunning. I always thought, and I mentioned this, you know, right at the beginning when Mike McDaniel was hired, that I thought that this would take a little bit to come off the ground offensively, as good as it can look, as clean as it can look in a practice, as exciting as it can look. There are a lot of timing elements. There are a lot of little layers. There's a lot of different formations, a lot of different things that do, when this offense is at its best, make it highly functional, but it also, it was a concern from the entire group for me.

26:14Jourdan Rodrigue:And it started up front. It wasn't just the rotation that they had at guard, right? They kept rotating the two, the two guys at guard. It was also that there seemed to be confusion with setting the protections and there seemed to be issues with like where receivers were supposed to be in their spots. And there were, you know, there were receiver issues again in this game and there were turnovers. And I think to me, it's the Cardinals were, they weren't like world beaters on defense or anything like that. They were just active enough to bother people to disrupt timing a little bit. When I think of the Raiders, I don't think again of a world beating defense.

26:50Jourdan Rodrigue:I think of a very much work in progress defense. When I think of Max Crosby, I think of somebody who just irritates the heck out of you and disrupts timing and messes with people and messes with stuff the entire game and has zero like lack of energy, like never gets tired doing that. So to me, that's where I get worried, even though their problems were more so on the inside versus the outside. I do get worried about that for the charge. Yeah, the matchups are strength on strength, I think, on the outside and then weakness on weakness on the inside. As much as the guard rotation annoyed all the Chargers fans, I'd be more annoyed with Cole Strange's contract because he was their biggest weakness last week and Mike McDaniel brought him.

27:30He's the guard that they brought from Miami and it's really supposed to be set up for him to be a good run blocker, but their run blocking was off. You mentioned wide receiver. Lad McConkie was awesome last week, was probably the best player on the Chargers along with Joe Alt, certainly on that offense. Had a good game, took a bunch of big hits. He's out of practice.

27:49Jourdan Rodrigue:Yeah, he landed really hard on his hip slash back. It's uncertain whether he's going to play this week, which makes this next stat even more worrisome. They threw 13 targets to non-Lad McConkie, wide receivers. I'm just going to ask you to guess. I know you don't like playing games on this. All right, 13 targets, mostly to Johnston and Harris. Yeah, I'm trying to remember. How many yards total of those 13 targets? There's also one to Darius Davis. 40. 37. Very good guess. I'm like, I'm remembering. I'm going over. or click, click, click, click. That's under three yards per play. That's crazy. That's a disaster.

28:27On the other side, one thing it took me watching the game to have a take on was Kirk Cousins. Like, start warming up that Fernando Mendoza arm because Kirk Cousins, as much as Justin Herbert was not great, I mean, Kirk Cousins, I think, was more of a concern. A couple of bad picks, just not super encouraging out of Kirk Cousins despite the easy win.

28:51Jourdan Rodrigue:I was concerned, I think, going into it about just the arm in general, but then also like his put the biomechanically, like putting everything together, the body movement that has to happen and how much focus that takes. And then, you know, the Dolphins defense will get to them, but they weren't, you know, I think my expectations are very, very low for this team. They were active at times. they were especially in the middle like they made some plays at times I'm trying to sound so positive but at the same time like I just I'm with you I think it was interesting you saw Fernando and he's listening in his helmet he's got his helmet on on the sideline similar to how Kirk Cousins always used to which I thought was really funny he's listening to the calls in the helmet he's clearly preparing and preparing and I guess we'll just have to see it won't be this week I don't think but we'll just have to see as time goes because I was of the camp at the beginning of this where I was like, I think that they'll just play Kirk as long as they can, even if that means the entire season, because there's no expectations on this season for the Raiders.

29:57Jourdan Rodrigue:But I think after last week, and again, when you're Clint Kubiak and you're running this system, you want to get some of those long run to pass connecting boots and all of those things. And the real positive was Ashton Janty in the passing game as well. And I I don't know how the charge is going to fare with that because they gave up a lot of yards. But other than that, though, I was concerned about some of the core elements, the base elements of what the quarterback has to do in this offense. Yeah, Kirk Cousins didn't give a lot of confidence. It was one week. And I agree, they'll play him as long as they can, whether that's four or five weeks.

30:29I mean, if they're winning games, they're obviously going to keep playing him. I think he needs to play better. But this offensive line showed a lot of potential in terms of run blocking and Gentry showed a lot of potential. Mike Washington, watching him back, I thought was like electric in that game, too. So they are going to have a really fun one-two punch. Curious. I think the Chargers will see Cousins in this passing attack and see food and take advantage and bounce back. But you never know. Brock Bowers might return for this game. We don't know his status yet. So if they get Bowers back and the Chargers don't get McConkie, like, whoo, there could be some nervous Jim Harbaugh and his staff on the sidelines if this thing is tight going into the fourth quarter and the Raiders fans are getting loud at SoFi.

31:15Let's take a break and we're going to come back with our final games in the late windows and the primetime windows, including a Sunday night football game with the revived Chiefs.

31:35Hey, our ride's almost here. Are you ready?

31:38Jourdan Rodrigue:Just grabbing my shoes. That's what you said 10 minutes ago. I just dropped a video call, uploading this giant file on my tablet, looking at my watchgo bananas with the group chat, and, of course, still lining up tonight's playlist on my phone. All at once? Yep. Story of my life. That's why I switched to T-Mobile. They have the fastest 5G network. Okay, multitasker. I see you. Honestly, I never imagined I could do all this at once. It's awesome. 34:44Sunday night football that I was surprised they chose for like week two Sunday night football Colts in that spot. And, and they're going back to back primetime Mahomes coming off an injury. Well, Mahomes, he's going to be fine. We'll, we'll figure out the passing game. They are six and a half point favorites against the Colts who need to do what the Denver Broncos could not and get a win in Arrowhead or else they're Owen too. And in one of the worst vibe teams in the league, What caught your eye between these two teams in week one?

35:16Jourdan Rodrigue:Well, who didn't catch my eye in a good way because he didn't have anything bad happen to him, was undrafted free agent left tackle, apparently now starting left tackle Khalil Benson. Wanted to shout him out. We talked about him a little bit on the recap show, but wanted to give him a little bit more love here. Gave up just one pressure in his 32 pass blocking snaps. Almost 85 % of those needed no chipping help. Did it himself, one-on-one according to NextGen. and also the Chiefs as a whole blocked well against the run. And when they didn't, Kenneth Walker made them look even better. And the Colts, now I guess sort of famously, because we've talked about it on this show, are having some serious issues at linebacker.

35:57Jourdan Rodrigue:They are not playing C.J. Allen, who they drafted to be the green dot. He did not play last week. Not even as a backup. Not even as a backup. He's the last guy in the rotation. According to Joel Erickson of the Indy Star, Cam Bynum, the defensive back had the green dot, which is a challenge switching that that late in the in the process between a linebacker, obviously in the middle of the field and a safety who's back deeper. And to me, what is an opponent that just put up a lot of tape that makes you think, man, I really hope I don't have problems at inside linebacker this week. But the Kansas City Chiefs, oh, my goodness.

36:30Yeah, sending the fullbacks and the tight ends. You know, you got three tight ends out there. It was mostly 12 personnel, which is with two tight ends on the field. So they're rotating pretty evenly and they have three that they can trust. But they also had a lot of just six offensive linemen. Yeah. Seven offensive linemen, one play. And the play that really typified what I think the 2026 Chiefs could be, like if you want to look for great omens, was the third and one. It was one of those extra offensive line plays. uh, extra offensive lineman plays. It was either six or seven and they call the third and one for Ken Walker.

37:11And he just goes behind those seven offensive linemen. And he just like waits for a while. And he's like, I'm going to let y 'all just push them forward for like two yards. I'm just going to stand back there. And I'm like, is he going to go? And then he just waits. And then he just goes for like the four easiest yards that you'll ever see on an inside run on fourth. And I was like, Oh, that looked really cool. That looked like a tractor, you know, cutting the grass, just moving slowly down the field. And like, he's just walking after us. Like that was awesome. And there was a lot of that in this game.

37:43Jourdan Rodrigue:Yeah, it's, I mean, I'm excited to see what week two of this run game looks like because of how much potential we saw in week one. I would like the Chiefs passing game to manifest itself a little bit more. But in this game, I don't think you're going to need to. I think you can, again, attack it really heavy with the run. You can play Emmitt, Emmitt, Emmitt Johnson too too, because he had some bursts at the end of the game. You could spell Ken Walker a little bit. Like, I'm not saying it's just going to be a pushover game for the Chiefs. But if they run the ball like that, a lot of teams are going to have some real issues, especially ones with such questionable personnel in their front seven like the Colts have.

38:19It's so weird to think for a Patrick Mahomes team. But I think this is going to be a run to set up the pass type of team. And that's great, but they have to be able to do it. And I actually think this is an early good test to them because they should be looking at the Colts secondary and think, man, if Declan Doyle can get these guys open by 5, 10 yards every snap against an inex, they're either really inexperienced or they're looking a little past their prime in the Colts secondary, not including Sauce Gardner in that mix.

38:48Jourdan Rodrigue:But they're playing, it's a very one-dimensional defense in the sense or one-dimensional coverage in the sense that it's almost, the coverage philosophy is almost past its prime because you never really see... Shots fired at Lou and Arumo. No, but you never... And Lou and Arumo is better than this. Like, you never see a corner just be able to be avoided. I mean, yeah, you do sometimes when you're playing like a lot of man coverage, stuff like that. But like, corners, you have to make a player like Sauce Gardner as unavoidable as possible. But a lot of the other players on the field have to help dictate the offense toward doing that.

39:27Jourdan Rodrigue:And I just don't think they can do that. They do get one back this week. Cornerback Cam Taylor Britt, who used to be on the Bengals and reportedly had a really good training camp and is going to have a big role, is back from a one-game suspension this week. I am as curious about the other side of the ball because the Colts' week one performance on offense felt like a feeling out process. I didn't think it was as bad as some people did. I think Jesse Minner presented some challenges for them. and we'll see if this Chiefs defense, who's very young and I thought got a great performance out of Felix and Adike Uzama, their first round pick from four years ago.

40:05He was the guy who really flashed kind of checking this game out again. And then Mansoor Delane, I think is going to play in this game. It's really good news that he's at practice on Wednesday.

40:15Jourdan Rodrigue:After banging up his shoulder in Monday night's game. Right, like missed that entire game after his interception, essentially. He played, I think, three or four snaps. So let's see if the Colts offense can kind of work their way into this season or else it's going to be kind of boring. Just a little fun note that we were hoping for. And then we actually get to see Kyrie's Tonga playing offensive and defensive lineman, Travis Hunter, who? No, I'm just kidding. It's just fun to watch. Travis Hunter did get a couple of touches. Listen, I'm, I'm a believer, man. Don't. It's not great out here for the Hunter heads.

40:47And it's hard to even say anything because they didn't throw at him at all. So that's a good thing.

40:52Jourdan Rodrigue:I'm just saying, here's the two-way player that we're watching right now. No. It's Josh Simmons, their left tackle. You mentioned Khalil Benson is probably going to be the left tackle again because Josh Simmons is still out of practice. Let's go to Dallas. I am more interested in this Cowboys game than I was going into week one. They are four and a half point favorites. It's the Tom Brady game. It's Kevin Burkhart. This is our national game in the late window. I like it more for a surprising reason, Jordan. I'm going to make you guess again. Damn it, Greg. I don't know. That's too vague. Can you guess my surprising reason for liking this game?

41:33What unit in this game was I kind of surprised by? A little more impressed than I thought.

41:40Jourdan Rodrigue:Commander's linebackers? You got it. Commander's defense. Well, I know you, Greg. I said unit. I said commander's defense. I'm just going defense overall. The guy who caught my eye in particular was Nick Cross. Now you could call him a linebacker because he's coming down and kind of playing that hybrid role. That hybrid role, really a safety. But I thought he was a great example of how physical, how cohesive, how tough this defense was last week. I think they were tough up front. And look, there's two first-time defensive coordinators in this game. One of them, Christian Parker, got a lot of attention this offseason.

42:12Jourdan Rodrigue:Oh, man. Durante Jones got a lot less. And so I want to give him some flowers. they looked cohesive and they they looked like a Brian Flores. They did. They did. They blitzed. They gave up a few big plays. But if you took out like five or six plays, they were a lot to deal with. So I'm glad the rest of the country is going to get to watch them. And I think led by Nick Cross, who, man, he'll hit. He'll run after you. He'll get in passing lanes. He is going to be a leader for this team. I'm really curious to see how they match up in a very tough matchup, a tougher matchup for them against this Cowboys offense.

42:46Jourdan Rodrigue:Yeah, a ton of five man pressure by Durante Jones, but it was coming from different directions and different angles. And he's got move players, which you know that coaches out of that coaching tree, that system that Brian Flores runs love to have. It takes a high level of communication to do it. I was I was also impressed by what I saw because it looked better, so much more assertive than it did last season. I heard Logan Paulson, who covers this team for Washington, talk about it. And he wasn't trying to cast any aspersions on the previous staffs, but he said it was nice to see how few, like, busts there were, how everyone knew to be in the right spot.

43:23And this is week one, and it was kind of the opposite of what happened to the Cowboys defense last week, where there were a ton of coverage busts and just linebackers didn't know where to be, and communication seemed to be off. So that's really impressive. I'm more impressed by the Commanders week one than I'm just, you know, killing the Cowboys for the whole season after one week.

43:40Jourdan Rodrigue:Well, I'd say, too, I'm bullish on both of these defensive coordinators. I've been high on Durante Jones since he was in Minnesota. And then also Christian Parker, I think is going to learn from this and is going to get better. And I think some of the issues that really frustrated me watching, because you know how much I love the Vic Fangio defense. And this was not that, um, you know, this defense in its most intended iteration is supposed to play down in a match zone. So coming out from a very simple sort of shell coverage, look matching down over the tops of routes. It takes a lot of, of communication.

44:19Jourdan Rodrigue:Like you mentioned, it does take, you can, you can, if you, a guy like Darius Williams, for example, the year that the Rams played this style of system and, uh, you know, an undrafted free agent corner had the best season of his career and never had a season like that again, because of how much a match zone, just putting in the communication and the time and really understanding what the opposing team is trying to do to you. And that's all the week of preparation for the entire group. Instead, they looked like they were playing spot to spots defensively to me, which is really bad if you're going against a team that's suddenly not running or passing to the spots that you thought they were going to go to.

44:57Jourdan Rodrigue:And so it looked very still in a lot of ways that this should not look still some of that I think is like well what are you going to do if you're not getting the pressure that you want if you're not stopping the run the way that you need to if your front structure is kind of a mess like to it to me it exactly when you watch it was frustrating because when you watch the the same play get run to the flat over and over and over again by the Giants and you're wondering to yourself is it that is it that they just cannot stop it because they don't have the right personnel to be able to, even when they brought a safety down into the flat to try to stop that play, he gets knocked back a couple of yards.

45:37Jourdan Rodrigue:So for me, it's like, I need to see more movement, more activity, more assertiveness from the Cowboys defense. I need to see more physicality from the Cowboys defense, better communication alignments where you're supposed to be. Like I, it's all a learning curve to me, but I was really disappointed with, with how they looked coming out of the gate against a team that just out physical them. And we'll see if Washington can do that. I think their offensive line showed some promise last week. Their rookie wide receiver, Antonio Williams, had a really nice first game. Stephon Diggs and Terry McLaurin and Antonio Williams feel like a little duplicative.

46:12And so you have Terry McLaurin doing some things that maybe it's not his best role. Even Diggs and Williams, they all feel we can do everything, but we're not like a true X type of receiver. They should be good route runners. I think their offense will get better, and they did play better down the stretch of that game. But look, Jaden Daniels entered the fourth quarter nine for 23, and there were like four drops. They had some negative aspects to their offense, which it shouldn't be as tough a matchup for Dallas this time around. I did think the running game had a pretty good start for Washington.

46:49So keep an eye on Bill Krosky-Meritt, and I think they're going to try to run the ball against this Cowboys group. I think the Cowboys offense got a little too much criticism. I think they ended up. I think they're going to be fine. They also ended up with either a second or third highest EPA per play in the league on offense. He just didn't have the ball that much. George Pickens did have a couple of drops and he's heading into a big contract year. Brian Schottenheimer, are you concerned? And then with George Pickens, some uncharacteristic drops from him. You say anything to him and then just how do you think he'll bounce back?

47:25Jourdan Rodrigue:I don't say anything to George. George will be just fine. He's going to usually catch that ball going down the sideline and probably pull through it, then jump over people and spin and then jump into the end zone. And so I don't worry about George. He's like, are you crazy? Do you know George? I'm not saying a goddamn thing. All right, let's wrap up with the San Francisco 49ers who are favored by 13 and a half. Oh, my. Over Miami. We've already reached the point of the season where it's like, how high can the line go when the Miami Dolphins are involved, especially on the road? And here is where I stand on the tiny table to make my tiny table take for this show.

48:15Writing this down.

48:16Jourdan Rodrigue:I think we're going to get another 50 burger, Greg. Oh, okay. I like that, but that's why it's a tiny table. 50 is a lot. 50 is a lot. 50 is a lot. But the first two weeks of the season, we see weird stuff happen. And I think Kyle Shanahan, after that strong outing the first week against the Rams, yes, very, very, very limited personnel, even more so. This year, Jake Tonjes is going to, looks like, miss the season. He is out for the season. We got two bad injury updates for the 49ers on Wednesday. Deshaun Stribling is out for 10 weeks, reportedly. And Jake Tonjes, who's really important to them, is out for the season.

48:52Jourdan Rodrigue:Yes. and I think it's like you know the football god said okay one of your great tight ends is healthy finally so now you're going to lose the other one which sucks um the but the the way that they can run the ball the way that they can move people here here is what caught my eye and who caught my eye will you allow me to be a big fat dork for a second why change now Kyle Juszczyk yeah in those motions. Some great reporting by my colleague, Ted Wynn. They call it a dash motion. I like to call it a pelican motion because it reminds me of when you watch pelicans dive into the water in this big arc from the sky.

49:30Jourdan Rodrigue:We are theorizing, Ted and myself, that that play that Kyle Yushek, the looping motion that he runs and particularly was so effective to the tune of something like six and a half yards per carry out of motion for the running backs when they ran this play was so, it's so interesting because there are so many different ways that you can run it that at this point we're, we're thinking it's like something like an option motion almost where he can choose where he cuts the motion. You watched him, um, chip block out of it. At one point you watched him block lead block for into the, into like a middle gap from it.

50:07Jourdan Rodrigue:At one point you watched him arc it really a lot wider and block downfield in it. And so for me, that makes it so incredibly difficult for a linebacker, for example, or a downhill safety to actually key on what the play is and where the gap is going to be, because the gap isn't actually, it's a moving target even after the snap. And because he can choose which way he can, like how far wide he can arc that particular motion of where he ends up on the field. All that being said, Jacob Rodriguez had a great game for the Dolphins last week. This is going to be such a brutal test for the young man, the rookie who played really, really well.

50:44It's a great matchup. And Jordan Brooks, I think, played well last week. I was thinking about your weight-bearing walls for the Dolphins. What are their names here?

50:53Jourdan Rodrigue:Devin? Not like their names. I thought you had a different term for them in Miami. Oh, I don't. Miami's calling them pillars. Everyone's looking a bit wobbly. But Jordan Brooks played great. Jordan Brooks played great. I was a little concerned that Aaron Brewer and Devon Achan in that running game, their pillars did not stand tall against the Raiders. So you want your best players to look as good as they looked with the previous staff. And it was one week, but they didn't on offense. I think they did on defense. So that's a great shout out. That matchup is going to be fun. I think Christian McCaffrey calmed a lot of doubters like myself.

51:31I was going to say, I'm, I'm prime. Number one, my Christian McCaffrey take before the season could be very wrong because they're giving him more time off and because his lateral quickness in that game looked awesome. Yeah, their running game. People kind of forget was terrible last year. It was one of the worst running games in the league. That was my number one takeaway from the 49ers week one. Not just that the older guys like Bosa and McCaffrey looked good, but if they have a running game that can cook, then I'm less worried about the lack of depth at receiver, which is worse without stripling and is really worse without Tonjes.

52:06Yeah, you could make the argument like Tonjes, this season.

52:10Jourdan Rodrigue:Big Demarcus Robinson season, you know? You know who could use Demarcus Robinson? The Rams. Yeah. You know? Demarcus Robinson steps in, so he'll step in for striveling. Like, I'm not saying Jake Tungis is better than George Kittle. I'm saying George Kittle coming off of a torn Achilles. Jake Tungis for the first half of the season was probably going to be your tight end one. He kind of was in week one. Well, in the passing game, Kittle looked good as a blocker. Sure. I just mean like he's going to play as much or more, and he's going to have a big role. So, that's unfortunate, but I do really look forward to watching this running game cook.

52:44Yeah.

52:44Jourdan Rodrigue:And I think it will. I think, you know, it's not to say that it's just something it's, they're going to throw a lot at this young linebacker and Jordan Brooks has experienced. They're going to throw a lot of both of them that they just haven't seen. I hated what I saw out of the dolphins offense around Malik Willis. That wasn't the young receivers. Like that's where everyone's worried. It was more that they couldn't run and they couldn't pass protect. I thought the offensive line had a really bad game. And yes, I am going to be looking for excuses from Malik Willis all year. But I'm being serious that the offensive line.

53:16Yeah, he did

53:17Jourdan Rodrigue:make a couple of nice. Yeah, I thought Malik Willis played fine. Nice throws and he had a couple good runs too, but we'll see how it goes. I thought he played fine, but I think we're lowering expectations. I have high expectations. I think he's going to be one of the best running quarterbacks ever. Ever. Just in terms of the running ability. Ever. But he's going to find a hard time against Osa and Bosa. Has anyone coined that yet? A little Osa and Bosa combination for the 49ers defensive line. We'll let you have that one. Osa and Bosa. Greg. They got to get a little deeper, but at least you have two really strong players up front.

53:52I think the 49ers are going to be a lot of people's survivor pick this year. In this week, I mean. That's it for week two. We did it. Thank you to everyone who checked out our late game preview. We will be back in the podcast feed with our big week two picks. Jordan will be back on Sunday when we're recapping all these games.

54:14Jourdan Rodrigue:Hope I get the ones I want. I guess we got to figure out what games you are covering. There's a lot of them. How many games we have on Sunday? Too many. The most possible. 14. It's a lot. We'll see you then.
