Key claims
- Saints’ comeback vs Ravens (24-17) hinged on “greater than the sum of their parts” defense and Tyler Shuck’s clutch performances, plus a strong connection with Chris Olave.
- Raiders’ win over Chargers was driven by Kirk Cousins’ downfield passing and late Chargers collapse (Herbert fumbles, interceptions, penalties).
- Browns’ win at Buccaneers featured a lightning delay and Browns’ second-half surge (outscored TB 17-3), with Baker Mayfield looking uncomfortable early and Deshaun Watson settling in.
- Vikings’ 9-3 win over Bears was a Brian Flores defensive masterclass; Caleb Williams’ hamstring injury was a major storyline.
Notable examples
- Saints: Olave TD (8 catches, 86 yards), Saints’ fourth-and-goal go-ahead.
- Raiders: Cody White TD; Herbert’s late fumbles/safety.
- Browns: Denzel Boston 55-yard TD; Watson converting third-and-short with legs.
- Vikings/Bears: goal-line stand; Vikings blitzing Caleb Williams heavily.

2:25Welcome to NFL Daily, where the upsets were a plenty in week two, if upsets even exist in week two. Maybe we just don't know anything.
2:33Jourdan Rodrigue:Maybe I'm upset. We're all upset. No, I love this Sunday. I'm Greg Rosenthal. I'm here in the Chris Wessling podcast studio with Nick Shook and Jordan Roderig. And yes, that is the theme at the top of our show. Some big time surprises, including your brownies, Shooki. You tried to go against them again and they proved you wrong.
2:52Nick Shook:Yeah, but you know what? You want to talk about upsets? I don't think anybody had a weather delay being involved. No. Two hours. Well, they maybe should have because there is a annual lightning delay in Tampa. It's usually week three. It's never with two minutes left in the game. It's not where we're going to start this show. We're going to start in the division where, yes, the Saints were one of the biggest underdogs of the day going to Baltimore and Declan Doyle, but they left there with a victory. Balls at the 37, second and 10, 20 seconds. Snap, Jackson, lofting one, and that is going to be picked off.
3:27Nick Shook:Julian Blackman. Julian Blackman slides down at the 10-yard line to finish it off. Julian Blackman. The Saints get the turnover when they need it the most. 13 seconds to play. Heading for the exits of the Baltimoreans. Get excited, Mike Haas on WWL. Saints go into Baltimore. Come from behind win. 24 to 17. On a day where, yes, they gave up one of the highest success rates ever to a losing team. They only gave up 17 points. Nick Shook, you had close eyes on this one. There's something about this Brandon Staley Saints defense that they're greater than the sum of their parts. How did they get it done?
4:13Nick Shook:There's something about this entire Saints team that they play their best football in the final two quarters, and they managed to stay just close enough, although Detroit being down 21-0 isn't really that close, just close enough to mount a comeback. And this time they finished the job because it didn't look good early. They're down 14-3. There's all types of success on the ground for Derrick Henry. He's running right through the defense. It seems like the Ravens are on their way to a double-digit victory. But then things start to slow down for Baltimore's offense. And then they start to apply pressure and they stop the run.
4:41Nick Shook:And Derrick Henry disappears from the picture right when Tyler Shuck comes through and says, I'm going to lead us on a comeback that's actually going to stick this time. There is something about Tyler Shuck. And it's dangerous with small sample size. You know, I know the analytics maybe would push back. Like, is there such a thing as clutch? He has played his best when it's mattered the most in his young career, including in this situation, including some of the dimes that he's throwing to Chris Olave. One of the best connections right now in the entire NFL. At the 21, Chuck takes it out of the shotgun, stands, fires it to the end zone, caught by Chris Olave.
5:19Nick Shook:And that is a touchdown, New Orleans. Chris Olave, wide open in the end zone from 21 yards out. It's one of those throws that you appreciate it more from the camera over his head because he has been good at anticipating finding holes in the zone. Olave with eight catches, 86 yards and a touchdown. Juwan Johnson has another good game. It just, it like, I'm now going to stop being surprised that they're competitive with really good teams.
5:44Jourdan Rodrigue:You know, the quarterbacks talk about this a lot. It's not something that's really quantifiable. The so-called like clutch gene or do you have it or do you not? It's this thing that they know when they have it. And oftentimes you can see it start to emerge from a player with how they do things like performance after critical error, like the way that they we know Tyler Shuck sometimes to his detriment likes to stand in the pocket and take a sack right but sometimes those types of things building up you can start to see the quarterbacks like real personality emerge out of adversity and whether it's performance after curly pace or whether it's something like this coming from behind it just sort of starts to become a little bit of a of an identifying trait for Tyler Shuck yeah and I think a big part
6:25Nick Shook:of what he's finding success with is the connection with Chris Olave which really started at the end against the Titans where he just throws one up to Olave for a touchdown, I believe in the fourth quarter of that game. Now we're seeing this on a consistent basis from one week to the next. And it started early for him in this game. Olave finishes with eight catches for 86 yards and that touchdown. The beauty of that touchdown is how he kind of manipulates the defense. You see Roquan kind of drifting out to the left a little bit, and then he throws it right over his head for a touchdown in a wide open window at the third level of the defense.
6:51Nick Shook:That's him being comfortable, understanding where he needs to go, and trusting his top target in Olave. And then it spreads from there. It's not just Olave. It's Juwan Johnson, who keeps making plays in the fourth quarter of these games. Devon Vele, a little bit of, you know, Oscar Delp. I mean, Bryce Lance. We got all these different players involved here. I don't even need to see Noah. I mean, they each had one catch for like eight yards. But Vele has stepped up without Jordan Tyson there, and he's been a factor. What I wanted to ask you about, Shook, was the decision by the Saints to go for it on fourth and goal.
7:26They're on the goal line. The go-ahead touchdown. And, you know, the call gets screwed up because you're not sure if they actually made it or not. But basically, it's a tie game under a couple minutes to go. And Kellen Moore, for the second time in two weeks, decides we're going to go for it. This is the type of team we're going to be. He ends up getting that touchdown. What do you think about the coaching, the aggression there by the Saints?
7:50Nick Shook:I like the aggression a lot because I think he sensed in that moment that they needed a touchdown to win this game. Because before that game-ending interception, the Ravens were driving again. That's respect for Lamar Jackson and what the Ravens can do. And it's also understanding that I need to send a message to my team that we're not going to go out passively. We're not going to, to make a college football reference, play not to lose like Ryan Day did against Texas. No, we're going to go for it, even if it gets your quarterback bent backward very awkwardly. I thought he actually broke the plane on third down and was further away from it on fourth down there when they actually got the touchdown.
8:20Nick Shook:Doesn't matter. It all works out for them. And it tells me again that Tyler Shuck is tough as nails. So the running game has been a disaster for them. Kamara comes back for this game. He catches five balls for seven yards, but they couldn't get anything done on the ground. Chase Young has been fantastic for back-to-back weeks. He's just like a beast right now. But like, what do you think about the Ravens? Like giving up, like just last week, I'm saying, oh, isn't it nice that the Ravens can just normally hold a three-score lead? And this game was not that. It was 14 to nine early in the third quarter.
8:54Like it was close throughout. But this is a like a missed opportunity. What is it about this Ravens team right now that they couldn't hold on?
9:01Nick Shook:That's the thing. The missed opportunities actually started in the first half when Tyler Loop hits like a knuckler on a field goal and ends up missing it. So that's three points taken off the board. And then if you look at their possession times in the second half, after their field goal drive, minute 41, minute 36, minute 15, that last one being the interception to end the game. They just didn't have the ball. There was a sequence late in the third quarter where the Ravens get after the Saints and they force them into some crazy downs and distances where it's like fourth and 26 in their punting.
9:24Nick Shook:And then the Saints go to the exact same thing to the Ravens. They lost all of their offensive momentum, their rhythm and their identity. And I think it started with going away from Derrick Henry and they're going to regret that.
9:34Jourdan Rodrigue:You know, kind of interesting too, is you saw, you see some of these key moments and I like to always, after a game finishes, I like to look at next gen stats, the prop win probability card, the Saints one versus the Ravens here today is, is like very, very neutral. And then all of a sudden starts really spiking up in the Saints favor. and especially after a fourth and one at the Baltimore 44, when the Saints are in no huddle and Tyler Shuck goes up the middle and gains the yard to the Baltimore 43. And it's little things like that that aren't necessarily the ones that we remember, but it's the ball control that Baltimore was really effective at and can be really effective at when they play it.
10:12Jourdan Rodrigue:This was a little bit of that for the Saints. So the Saints pull off a big upset. You know, I like themes for these shows. One other theme, unfortunately, on Sunday was young quarterbacks getting hurt. That's a bummer of a way to start the show. So we're not going to start with the quarterbacks getting hurt, but we'll get to that soon enough. Another big upset, at least on paper, was the Raiders going across the street. Not really an away game for them, but it was the first time that they won with Raiders fans in the crowd against the Chargers. So it hasn't helped them in the past. We're definitely in the crowd.
10:48Let's go. Raiders, Chargers. Third and five on the Chargers 11 for Kirk Cousins and the pistol. Two tight ends stacked right with Bess to the right side of them. Now Mare motions. It is a play fake with a blitz off his back foot to the end zone.
11:02Nick Shook:Touchdown! Cody White! He has doubled his career total on the second half.
11:15Cody White!
11:16Nick Shook:And with 2.59 to go in the game. the Raiders up two scores and a chance to win here in SoFi for the first time since 2020. That's the type of energy I'm looking for. Jason Horowitz, Kirk Morrison would have led the show with that if I had heard it right off the bat. That's incredible. And I think it's a broadcast crew and a fan base right now that is feeling giddy because they just won these two games in a very Raider way. And to beat the Chargers by a couple of scores, we'll get to what a disaster it is for them. With guys that are cast-offs. Kirk Cousins is a cast-off. Derrick Young is a former Seahawk that Clint Kubiak brought here.
12:02He scores a touchdown in this game. He's a cast-off. Cody White is a cast-off from Seattle. And Kirk Cousins, I think, was exemplary in this game for completing passes. And that was not one of them. where the time that he threw it, like the NGS completion expected percentage was very low. And yet he actually hung in there and he so doesn't want to take a hit right now at this point of his career. But in this game, I did feel like he was willing to hold the ball and take a couple hits. And he had some courageous throws. It felt like a miracle that they were leading in this game at one point, but they were the better team in the fourth quarter.
12:37Jourdan Rodrigue:I think we thought that, I mean, we thought a lot of things, right, before week one. and then week one happens, then we think a lot of other things. And now week two and dangerous times for the Chargers, which we'll get to. But I think we thought that this would not be a division that the Raiders would have any success in at all this season. But it's stuff like this. It's Kirk Cousins being willing to change up the way that he's most comfortable with playing a little bit. I saw it when I see him in the pistol. I get a little bit worried still because I just remember what it was with Atlanta and how he was forced into the pistol because of his lack of movement skills and all of that.
13:10Jourdan Rodrigue:But they're using it, you know, with more discretion in Las Vegas so far. And I like it. I like how he's distributing the ball to his playmakers, even without Brock Bowers again for a second consecutive week. And Greg, the longer developing, like you had a comment when we were sitting in there watching the game today where you're like, man, it might take a while to get there, but the ball is getting there. The comment was you could have recorded his touchdown pass, which was for 40 yards to Trey Tucker with a sundial. I mean, that thing took forever. And that was a busted coverage at a time in the game where Derwin James was out of the game.
13:46Although I think it was more hurtful for them on that particular play that Elijah Molden, who's normally their starter, was out. And Genesis Smith, a rookie, was in there. That was a busted coverage. The game-winning touchdown was a busted coverage. They definitely got help. But there also were great throws by Kirk Cousins, like I mentioned, on the move. Let's listen to one of my favorite completions of the entire day. It's a no look by Kirk Cousins.
14:11Nick Shook:Second and 10. Bash motions left in slot right. Cousins to snap. He's looking over the middle. Late pressure. Taking a deep shot for Tucker. Pulls it in at the Chargers 45. He went right down the seam. Timeout Clint Kubiak with 22 seconds. Tucker basket catch right down the middle of the field for 43 yards. They look like a better coach team. Now, you're not going to count on Kirk Cousins as the hits coming in, like turning his head away and chucking it as far as he can to get a late first half field goal to happen too often. But to me, that was very typical because the Chargers blew their drive just before that.
14:50The Raiders have the ball deep in their own end and they stay aggressive. Like that's a time where I almost thought they would just run and go into halftime and they get three points. And like they looked in year one like a better coached operation than than the Chargers do right now in year three under Jim Harbaugh and the first year under Mike McDaniel.
15:09Nick Shook:I think there's something fun about a new coach with a team that buys in because and the fact that they started with two wins this year, because you don't really know that like you could make a mistake or that things could go wrong because they haven't really gone wrong. It like you're ignorant to the idea of the fact that you could the all this could go terribly and you could lose this football game because they've had success in the first two games. So that's how you get Kirk Cousins still trusting what he has left in his arm to chuck it downfield and complete a big pass. And then you end up winning another game this time against the Chargers team that most of us had as the expected winners in this game.
15:40Nick Shook:And it's just so fun because, like you said, they won this in such a Raider way. Well, what is the Raider way? I don't know. We're figuring that out in real time.
15:47Jourdan Rodrigue:It's 2-0. Improbable. You're right. Improbable weirdness. Herbert was a problem late in this game. Like early, like he has an interception on a great throw that David Njoku just volleyballs up like he was setting it. Unfortunately, Njoku left with what looked like a serious injury later in the game, a knee injury. Charlie Kohler also left this game. So they're going to be short at tight end, potentially, depending on how serious that Kohler injury is. Herbert, I think, wasn't that bad for most of the game. But you get to the fourth quarter and it was a nightmare. He held the ball too long near the goal line and fumbles.
16:23They're very lucky to recover it. He fumbles another play where he's holding the ball and rolling out. Then his last two drives of the game, and they're probably going to lose at this point anyways, but he throws an interception and then he takes a safety where Joe Alt takes the fourth of his penalties on the day. Max Crosby owned Joe Alt in this game. So there's so many things going wrong for the Chargers, but it's just discombobulated. There was a third and one play while they're still in this game, down three points and Herbert sends Trey Harris in motion too late. The operation's bad. They snap it and it hits Trey Harris like as he's going across and they have to punt and the Raiders end up going to score kind of the go ahead touch or the game ceiling touchdown after that.
17:10Jourdan Rodrigue:So much of what we saw from them in camp looked so clean and then also maximizing the strengths of this roster, which were perceived to be the tight ends, for example, and led McConkie and all, all of those guys. now, Lad McConkie has entered the game banged up after a hip shot last week. You know, obviously Charlie Kolar and then David Njoku got banged up as well. And then the tackles. And what we did see in camp, though, Greg, was a couple of times at that practice we were at, we did see center to quarterback timing issues. This is a timing predicated offense. I think we did warn at the beginning of all of this with Mike McDaniel is that some of the timing plays, the motions, it takes a minute for those things to set up.
17:51Jourdan Rodrigue:But when you're in a hole like this early on in the season, including a game to an AFC West rival that you didn't expect to be such a rival early on, that's a problem.
18:01Nick Shook:That's the weird thing about this team right now. And I'm not discounting the injuries that they have suffered, but that's been the story with them over the last two years as well. The offensive line's gotten hurt. Herbert's had no time to throw. He's done whatever he could. Yes, they lost their center before the start of the season, which matters a lot. But most of this group is largely intact. And yet they continue to play very sloppy football.
18:18Jourdan Rodrigue:And the defense. And the defense has just been mediocre to disappointing in the last two weeks. I think the first team ever, you know, they lose 26 to 14 in the first two games of the season. I think one other team ever has ever lost twice 26 to 14 in the same year. Stupid stat. We talked all offseason about how they had the easiest first two weeks of any team. And they're home for Arizona and the Raiders. They not only lose both games, but they lose both games by two scores. I thought last week they looked clearly like the inferior team. I didn't have that feeling in this game. It felt more like the Raiders made a handful of great plays, but then the Chargers totally crumbled late.

19:01Like the first catch that Cody White had was one of the craziest catches of the entire season for a touchdown. But the fact that they crumbled so bad, and now the tough part of their schedule starts at Buffalo, at Seattle, Denver, at Kansas City, then a bye, than the Rams, Texans at Baltimore all in a row. The heat is on Jim Harbaugh in a really serious way. We will see how that goes. The same could be true for the head coach right now in Tampa Bay. Let's go there.
19:34Nick Shook:Here we go. Fourth down, 22 ticks to go. Baker's got the ball. Baker to throw. Baker going. End zone. Incomplete. Incomplete in the end zone. They wanted a Buka, and the Browns take over on downs. They're up 23-19, and they can take a knee and get out of Tampa with a victory over the Buccaneers. If Nick Shook's not going to be happy, at least Andrew Siciliano is. Thank you. Yes, that's our friend on WKRK, and our friend is going to be hosting a Thursday night recap this week, actually. Andrew Siciliano and Nick Shook teaming up for that one. Before that could happen, though, we have more Andrew highlights because, yeah, the Browns went in there, and the lightning delay is what everyone's going to remember from this game.
20:22They had a four-point lead, two minutes left to go, and they have a two-hour delay. They hold on with it still raining after the break. A comeback victory. You more impressed by them making Baker Mayfield look bad in this revenge game or by the offense getting it together in the second half?
20:42Nick Shook:You know, from a macro perspective, I know we're only two weeks into the season. I don't know what to think about this Buccaneers offense, because I don't know if it's, if it shines a positive light on the Bengals and what they did against him, considering what they did against Houston, which we'll talk about later, or if it shines a positive light on the Browns defense, or if they just are discombobulated offensively. What I know is that he looks very uncomfortable and the Browns capitalized on that. So what am I more impressed by the fact that they were able to hang on against their former quarterback, who was this close to throwing a game winning touchdown and came up.
21:11Nick Shook:Yeah. And I also have, I'm probably most impressed by the fact that the Browns were able to outscore them 17 to three in the second half to finish the game and win this game on the road when they were so bad last week. Did not have eyes on Deshaun Watson going 17 for 21 for 183 yards and two touchdowns with 18 yards rushing in the second half. Can you, and I look, I see that the average depth of target for the game is under four. So, hell, let's.
21:38Jourdan Rodrigue:Grain of salt. Grain of salt. Let's listen to one of those short passes that turned into a long game because it does highlight some of the exciting young talent, Denzel Boston in Cleveland.
21:49Nick Shook:Deshaun changed in the play. Shotgun McLaughlin to his left. Has the snap. Deshaun loads, fires, caught Boston on the run. Denzel Boston breaks the tackle. 30. He's at the 20. Foot race to the four pylon. Touchdown. Browns. Denzel Boston. There you go. Bam. 55 yards. And look, Todd Bowles is going to be dying at that tackling on that play. But Watson had a nice throw that Denzel Boston couldn't bring in for a touchdown at a different point in the game. He stuck with him. Like, what was it that got this offense going? It was this. It was short completion after short completion. It was getting the ball out quickly on time.
22:25Nick Shook:First read trusting your young guys, trusting Casey Concepcion, trusting Denzel Boston, even Isaiah Bond for one catch down the sideline. And it's, you know, Watson was fine at best, but what he did do was settle into this offense and stop sitting back and dropping deep and looking and looking for the perfect throw. He just took the first thing that was there. Tampa kind of soft defensively in coverage, especially as they were hanging on to that lead and then trying to just kind of pick up the pieces in the fourth quarter. And then the weirdest part about it all was we know he's not a super mobile quarterback anymore, but there were a few instances in which it was third and short, which they managed to do a lot, get into third and short where Watson converts with his legs.
22:59Nick Shook:They were using him as a runner more in the preseason, which made me think they were confident in it.
23:03Jourdan Rodrigue:Yeah. And to that point, it kind of reminds me of those like Yak Bros days. Not as productive, obviously, but I'm seeing like double digit yards after the catch for multiple receivers and tight ends and Quinchon Jenkins as well, using him in the passing game, as we know they like to do. Like this is just this is a formula for them. Get into manageable down distances, dink and dunk and let the playmakers do the job and hide the quarterback. But the crazy thing is they were the worst running attack in the entire NFL today, which happens against Todd Bowles sometimes like 17 % success rate, 44 yards rushing on 23 carries.
23:36So they basically had to get it done with just Watson with, you know, throwing the ball and that's not a route that you would expect to work so well. Yeah. But when your defense is playing this well, it can Baker Mayfield had a 16 % success rate throwing the ball in the first half of this game. And yet at the end of the game, like, Baker ball.
23:55Jourdan Rodrigue:Keep sun rolling, baby. Like, are we going to have to have a conversation about the contract they gave him? It looks so bad right now.
24:03Nick Shook:I mean, I thought it looked bad the second they made it, but he's a streaky quarterback. This is different than streaky, though. This is somebody who is completely uncomfortable in the office.
24:11Jourdan Rodrigue:Yeah, this is not.
24:12Nick Shook:Dropping to survey and looking skittish and getting ready to try to bail out of the pocket before he even needs to. It wasn't often that he was going to his first reader, finding guys that were even open, that were schemed open by pattern combinations. No, it was just him missing guys, trying to take off, trying to make the hero play instead of making the simple play for most of this game. And I do give him a little bit of credit though, because if it wasn't pouring rain after that delay, I think he hits Ted Hurst for a touchdown that won that game. Well, that's the thing. Like Ted Hurst had a chance to bring in, on a nice ball from Baker in that final sequence.
24:45and then Baker misses a pretty open throw. So the Browns get some good fortune there. And yet, you got to give Todd Munkin credit for scheming him up. Todd Munkin, after the game, excited to honk a little bit at all the doubters.
25:01Nick Shook:I thought our guys did a great job of hanging together. We had a couple scuffles Wednesday, which is good. That's awesome. Because guys didn't like it. Right? They're a little pissed off. Right? You ought to be a little pissed off. Played awful. That wasn't the standard. Browns are going to Browns. F*** that.
25:22Jourdan Rodrigue:Yeah.
25:23Nick Shook:So the guys took that to heart.
25:26Jourdan Rodrigue:I love him. We need Mocken on the show. He's even doing the thing where you start whispering every now and then as you talk, and then you like build it back up. That's a very Greg Rosenthal podcasting moment right there. Thank you to the Browns for bringing some joy, some surprise, and yeah, a one-on-one record in the Buccaneers now at 0-2. So those are three monster upsets, at least by week two standard, to start the day. I also thought it'd be fun. Let's get the Raiders and the Browns and the Saints in the first block of the show. Maybe that'll become a trend. Maybe not. Nope. And it also would have been a bummer to start with an injury.
26:04Jourdan Rodrigue:And if you just started listening now, good to see you. You never know. It would have been a bummer to start the show. even though I know that football head supreme Jordan Rodrigue loved the Vikings-Bears game. Oh, it was sloppy and great. Ultimately, the Caleb Williams injury is the biggest thing coming out of this game, but a big win for Minnesota on the road.
26:26Nick Shook:Second to go. Vikings lead 9-3. Final play of the game. Bajan takes the snap. Vikings rush five. Turner pushed. He pushed Loveland into Bajan, and now you can go home. The Minnesota Vikings have won seven in a row at Soldier Field. The final score, 9-3. Chicago meet Dallas. Great call there by KFAN's own Paul Allen for the first time. This season, a fitting end to a defensive battle. And weather mattered in a handful of these games. Definitely the Bucs game. Definitely the Bears game. I would throw the Patriots game in there as well because just rain across the country. They were great in the red zone.
27:13There's one man, Jordan, with over 10 quarterback hits on this season. And that man is Dallas Turner.
27:18Jourdan Rodrigue:Oh, man, Dallas Turner. I mean, he started to break out last year. He has been a good player. But this season so far has just been absolutely electric. Obviously, the biggest story of this game is Caleb Williams hurts his hamstring. In the fourth quarter, a non-contact injury. He pulls up when he's looking to run in a touchdown. He had Colston Loveland ahead of him. It's kind of motioning for him to block downfield for him. And then right after that, the game tying field goal was blocked. And so it just goes bad to worse. The second biggest story of this game and the absolute like key to this game for either side, for either any phase of either of these teams was the Minnesota Vikings defense.
28:00Jourdan Rodrigue:This was an absolute masterclass for Brian Flores. There is no other way to describe it. He held week one's highest scoring offense to just three points in week two. This defense, like I said, was the best group on the field in any phase for either of these teams. They held up the entire Vikings operation on the other side. They hid all of Carson Wentz's disaster and near disastrous plays. In the first half, Brian Flores blitzes Caleb Williams on 75 % of his dropbacks per next-gen stats. and he's 6 of 10 for 46 yards in interception and a sack on those plays. And that's not even getting me started on the penalties, guys.
28:42And the blitz rate increased from there. So I don't know what it was for Bajan, but it gets up close to 80%. No one is running defense like Brian Flores is right now. No one has ever run defense like Brian Flores has run it. 80 % through two weeks in terms of the blitz rate. And yeah, it's not a surprise, but the 56-point drop from one week to the next is the fourth largest in NFL history, the most since 1973. I think there was a Rochester team that was higher. And you mentioned how the defense was good throughout. Look, the injury, we'll get to kind of the impact of that in a second. But in the first half, there was a goal line stand.
29:21And I know Paul Allen's going to deliver on this one. DeAndre Swift getting stuffed at the one.
29:28Nick Shook:Caleb to DeAndre. Matched his point of attack. He dropped it. And Isaiah Rogers recovered it. The Minnesota Vikings turn over the Chicago Bears at the one yard line.
29:43Jourdan Rodrigue:Yeah, that is. So in the third quarter, the Bears opened the second half because in a way that indicated that Ben Johnson was really freaking pissed off. And he should have been. They ended the first half with a penalty, another penalty. Caleb was hit on second of 25, has to throw it away. Intentional grounding. Two minute warning hits. Third and 23, false start, another penalty. Third and 28, Dallas Turner again and Jalen Redman on the pressure. It's an incomplete pass, and they're out of field goal range. They go into the locker room. Ben Johnson is completely irritated, you can tell. So he comes out, and they start trying to get DeAndre Swift and Kyle Menongai going, and a lot of that zone running that they're super productive in.
30:22Jourdan Rodrigue:This is just the Bears' day, though. They get to the goal line, and it's Jalen Redman again, the interior defensive lineman who punches out that ball, and Isaiah Rogers, who had another interception late in the game, like they just kept hitting them in the worst moments. And that series that I mentioned ahead of the first half, the end of the first half, was so indicative of how much the Vikings defense was messing up the timing for this entire offense. Not only were they hassling Caleb Williams with all the different pressure looks that they were bringing pre-snap and at-snap, the timing was so messed up.
30:59Jourdan Rodrigue:They kept rotating their offensive linemen, their offensive line, by the way, who gave up 17 pressures throughout the game. And also of the eight penalties Chicago committed for were on Garrett Bradbury alone. He's been a problem. It was it was a disaster all around. The only thing they could do at times was run the ball. And they they just they could not sustain even that. And that Isaiah Rogers play, they set up the final play. They end up calling back the interception late. I thought he made it. But Byron Murphy did have an interception in this game, too. Look, Caleb Williams and the Bears have a little bit of a Brian Flores problem.
31:35This is three times they faced him where the passing game just hasn't worked. But you could just say the NFL has a Brian Flores problem. This division has a Brian Flores problem. And talk about managing a schedule. I love a good schedule management. You get your quarterback injured in week one. You're losing. You have two division games back to back. and you come back on the Packers like they did. And then you win on the road in the division. You're 2-0 in the division with Carson Wentz taking almost all the snaps. And Kyler Murray is expected to be back next week, according to Kevin O 'Connell, said he should be out of the concussion protocol.
32:11And the running game was better for Minnesota, but I don't think there's a quarterback controversy or anything.
32:16Jourdan Rodrigue:No, God, no. Oh, my God, no. No, not at all. Never let us see that again, please. Two working eyes. I think you understand who you're going to have to go to, a quarterback.
32:26Nick Shook:It's what's so interesting about this and the way you just described this too is like this is a team that basically dug out of what was going to be a loss last week on the backs of their defense. This is a team that completely shuts down the high scoring bears on the back of their defense and timely turnovers and it's a team that could very much be looking at 4-0 going into week 5 against the Saints but I think that when you look at this when we go back afterward this is one of those games at lower levels of football where a coach would go into the locker room after the game because I've watched this happen.
32:56Nick Shook:This has happened to me before. They go in, they just start going, spent all week reading your press clippings. You thought you were all high and mighty. You thought you were untouchable. No, this is one that's a good reminder to the Bears that they have to pay attention to detail. I mean, the press clippings are created from him saying they want to have the greatest offensive attack. It's a humbling game for everyone. It happens. I mean, who's to say? Is he a Dan Campbell merchant? Like, you know, things like narratives change from Thursday to Sunday. See what I did there. Oh my God.
33:25Jourdan Rodrigue:Stir the drink a little bit. I mean, I'm joking. The dumbest point that is ever going to be made. That's just the most key thing possible. Yeah, the rain and all of that, but it just was so sloppy entirely for this entire offensive operation that to me, losing the game to an elite defensive mind like Brian Flores, an elite strategic mind like Brian Flores, that's going to sting less, in my opinion, than what Ben Johnson is going to watch from down to down from this entire operation. You can live with yourself and your team if you give up plays, if you're outscored, if you're in the rain, if something crazy happens to your quarterback, unfortunately.
34:02Jourdan Rodrigue:But at the same time, if you're committing this number of penalties, if you look this sloppy in sequences that you worked on all offseason, such as the late first half, like that is what he's going to be sick about. And look, Caleb Williams hurt his hamstring on a play that he could have possibly scored a touchdown on.
34:20Nick Shook:They're a yard away from a touchdown. So I think he would have run in. So the game changes there. After the game, there was some optimism that maybe the hamstring injury isn't going to be that long term. Ben Johnson said they'll have tests and they'll find out. Mike Florio said on NBC that there's some hope maybe it's only a grade one strain and then he could be back sooner than later. So that's unfortunately one of two young quarterbacks from the class of 24 that got hurt. In this week, we will hit the other one on the other side of the break.

To succeed, you have to bring so much more to the field. Grit, determination, preparation, strategy, leadership. It's all part of the game. Just look at today's players. A quarterback has to do so much more than throw the ball. They need to read defenses, extend plays, and make smart decisions under pressure. Running backs do so much more than run. They're catching passes, picking up blitzes, and finding ways to create opportunities when the play breaks down.
36:47The players who make the biggest impact are often the ones who can do more than what's expected of them. Whether it's on the field or off, success often comes from being able to do more than one thing well. Take Nationwide, for example. They're so much more than a great insurance company. 37:48Nick Shook:Prescott back second and seven. Throw it in the end zone. Lamb, flag down. Touch made. Touchdown. It's two for Lamb, four for Prescott. and Dak Prescott will have thrown more touchdown passes than any Cowboys quarterback in a career ever. Pretty cool moment there for Dak Prescott, passing Tony Romo on the all-time Cowboys touchdown list. That's Brad Sham of KRLD. Now this is the Cowboys offense we wanted to see. Unfortunately, it's the commander's defense we expected to see as well. The Cowboys win 37-20 on a day where CeeDee Lamb goes off 153 yards and two touchdowns. And, yeah, that catch was set up by the piss missile.
38:45Nick Shook:Dak Prescott having a great day. Three touchdowns, 220 yards, 24 of 29 on a second and long here. Rifles one. CeeDee Lamb. He's got it. Oh, my goodness. beauty of a throw from Dak Prescott on target. Absolute piss missile up the sideline. Samer still stinking in cover two. I apologize to Tom Brady for stepping on him there. But man, can't take for granted Tom's performance or just like these throws and catches are so pretty, Jordan.
39:16Jourdan Rodrigue:Yeah, when Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb want to completely take over a game and start hitting that connection, it's pretty close to unstoppable because actually the commander's defense played a creditable game for a lot of this game. Durante Jones of either phase and certainly more than the Cowboys defense impressed me today. Durante Jones, the new defensive coordinator for the commanders. Dak Prescott finished 26 of 31 for 279, four touchdowns. And obviously, as the sham god said, holds the franchise record for touchdown passes with 249. and the Cowboys really needed a palate cleanser game like this.
39:55Jourdan Rodrigue:And it came really through the passing game. A couple of their best runs got called back via penalty as well. But this was an astounding surge from the Cowboys after going up early, letting the commanders kind of hang around a little bit too long, and then finally putting the nail in the coffin, courtesy of those two plays on the same drive. So when Dak Prescott was blitzed, 11 of 14, not for many yards, but just like he knows what to do. You're in good hands when you have Dak Prescott at quarterback. When he was pressured, 9 of 13 for 101 yards, the running game, as you mentioned, kind of didn't get going.
40:32But what did you kind of see? Was there anything that surprised you out of the passing game and kind of how they handled it?
40:38Jourdan Rodrigue:No, this was what we hoped and thought it would look like. A lot of people got a lot of different looks. There are really defined layers built in. There was motion. There were, they were trying to stretch the field wide as well as vertically. They were getting the ball to the tight ends. They were playing different personnel. Like, you know, Jake Ferguson had a touchdown as well. This to me was what it looked like and what it was supposed to look like the entire season. Unfortunately for the Cowboys, it also comes with the expectation that they have to score a lot because this defense was astounding and not in a good way again.
41:09Jourdan Rodrigue:And I want to say to, to, to not bury the lead. Cause I want to talk about what this defense did before. Jaden Daniels got hurt and after Jaden Daniels got hurt, we should not bury the lead here that Jaden Daniels suffered what Dan Quinn confirmed is a dislocated elbow. So obviously his recovery timeline is still unknown as we're taping this, but it was a gnarly play. He was moving the ball really, really well before the play, especially using his legs a lot. Stefan Diggs was sort of having his way with the Cowboys defense as well. And then once he comes out, Marcus Mariota comes and quality backup, but just not the same.
41:43Jourdan Rodrigue:The front Cowboys front starts getting after Marcus Mariota a little bit more. Still some huge issues in the Cowboys secondary, but it was a clear difference in how this game was going to go. It reminds me of that Caleb Williams injury, because not only did you lose your franchise quarterback from the game, it was such a consequential play in the game. It was the last play of the first half. They go for it with no time remaining, essentially on a third down and goal from the one. And it's a totally discombobulated play. He ran the ball and I know he was moving it, but he led the NFL in scramble rate as a rookie.
42:23He led it in his second year. And I'm sure he's close to leading it or leading it right now. Like he got most of his yards on the ground 69. Unfortunately, that elbow is an injury we have history with. He missed three games with it last year. And who knows if it's the same severity or not, But when he came back, he only lasted one more game, I think one full game, and then he hurt it again and was out for the rest of the season. So unfortunately, injuries have become a huge part of the Jaden Daniels story.
42:53Nick Shook:Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe this is the second time he's gotten hurt in Dallas as well. And it's just unfortunate. Think about it. What do the football gods have against the commanders in their quarterback situation? Because it wasn't just like a rolled ankle or anything. He gets stepped on by his center as he's trying to basically bootleg out, stumbles, lands on that elbow, and the slow-mo of it was gruesome. I mean, it was disgusting. And yet the commanders find themselves in the same spot again with Marcus Mariota, one of the better backups in the NFL, leading the offense, but it just lowers the ceiling on this team overall.
43:25Jourdan Rodrigue:Well, and then in the third quarter, and like I said, to that point, I was pretty impressed with how Durante Jones, the defense just kept showing up, kept making plays. No, it wasn't super effective when they were pressuring Dak Prescott, but they had bottled up the run pretty well. And like I mentioned, had a couple called back with penalties and the passing, you know, I just really felt like that flipped so much. And they, the Dallas defense finally gets its big moment when Jayshon Barham forces a fumble, Dee Winters recovers it. It's really an effort play that we hadn't seen a lot of to start the season from the Cowboys with everyone swarming to try to get that ball and then sets the Cowboys up in the red zone.
44:04Jourdan Rodrigue:Dak Prescott hits the touchdown. It's sort of game over at that point. And for me, it really was the only moment that I could extrapolate where I was not genuinely concerned still about some of the communication issues that I'm seeing from the Cowboys. And it was exactly what you would like to see in a sort of an alternate universe here with these Dallas Cowboys, which is the defense forcing turnovers and setting things up for an offense that will score touchdowns in an opportunity like that. So the Cowboys get to one and one needed that. Commanders at 0-2 and staring at some Mario at a time who, like Nick said, is a good backup, but he's not Jaden Daniels.
44:40And nice to see Jayshon Barham who got a lot of attention last week for being at the center, a lot of their bad plays, for walking away from Christian Parker when he's trying to tell him something out of frustration. These are the growing pains when you're playing young players. They got plenty of them. They get the win here. So I thought we would probably be leading this week with either Bengals Texans or Broncos Jaguars. These were the games between like the teams that we expected. Okay. They're going to be in the playoff mix. You know, they weren't as close necessarily in the Houston Texans state case, but I did find this game fascinating.
45:17Shotgun snap.
45:18Nick Shook:Burrow from the pocket fires deep downfield. Jamar chase trying to make the catch near the pylon. He's got it. Touchdown Bengals. He was defended by first-team All-Pro Derek Stingley. They collided near the pylon. Stingley went down, and Chase miraculously made the catch and got both feet down. An absolutely sick catch by Jamar Chase. That was Dan Hoard on WCKY. The Bengals control the Texans 20-6, And that play was such a good reminder of just great offense beats great defense. The Bengals had to work so hard for their yards and their scores today, and they were just better. Like, that throw is absolutely perfect, thrown with such anticipation.
46:13That adjustment on the ball is ridiculous by Jamar Chase. In fact, both of Jamar Chase's touchdowns, to me, were just great offense beating great defense.
46:24Nick Shook:Shotgun snap. Burrow under pressure. Begins scrambling right. Gets away from a sack. Points toward the end zone. Throws. Jamar Chase makes the catch. Touchdown! Yes! Big! Bengals! Two touchdown catches for Jamar Chase. And the Bengals are on the verge of going up by 14. Oh, Reed Blankenship at the center of things once again.
46:48Jourdan Rodrigue:Over pursuit. Yeah, although you kind of just give credit there. because ultimately, like he still an amazing place finding the soft spot. Right, exactly. It's really Aziz Al-Sahir's spot in the zone. And Chase sees what's happening, undercuts it. There's quick pressure on Joe Burrow, which there was for a lot of this day. And he gets out of the way and makes a throw on the move. I was so impressed, Chuck, with with Burrow in this game because he got absolutely leveled. Supposedly came in with a back injury. You would never have known it because he took some clean shots on that back, on his shoulder.
47:26They got after him, especially Will Anderson. And Burrow just kept getting up and making enough big plays to chase and to T. Higgins. Higgins ends up with five catches, 95 yards. It's just like our players are better than your players. And our defense is going to make enough plays to win.
47:41Nick Shook:Yeah, it's only a week to win. But I think it matters so much from an emotional standpoint. because like for most of this game, success rate, 27.6%. It's not like you're moving the ball up and down the field at will. You know you're playing against an elite defense and you know you're on the road and it's a great test of how you can withstand these challenges. And what it ends up being is a game of big plays, games in which you make the key plays in the big moments that produce points. And then you're able to win a game by 14 points against a team that shouldn't even allow that many points based on their defense.
48:11Nick Shook:And couple that with a defense that holds the Texans to six points despite giving up 374 yards in total offense. Bend, but don't break Bengals, baby. Right. I'm glad you brought up that success rate because it really explains sort of what I saw with my eyes, which was just like they just hit big plays every once in a while when they needed to. But overall, like the running game wasn't good for the Bengals. It was just better than the Texans. And the passing game wasn't consistent for the Bengals. But when they had high leverage snaps, they came through with plays like that. and Burrow ends up five for nine with a touchdown against pressure.
48:48Jourdan Rodrigue:It's crazy looking at six points and looking at C.J. Stroud's, you know, 55 passing attempts, 353 passing yards, obviously no touchdowns, no interceptions. And then you look at the running game and it's like David Montgomery, six carries for 10 yards total. A week after the run game, it wasn't getting a lot of yards per carry, but it was at least falling forward. Like it was actually creating a little. It was a disaster. And that's my question is what, what was so, what was not working about it? And why could they not capitalize on, on these yards? I mean, they were moving the ball all game. So it wasn't just the garbage time thing.
49:28And Stroud did get some, some yards late in the game, but they had almost 200 yards of offense in the first half. They were out getting the Bengals, even in the first half, couldn't score. I mean, it's the running game, their offensive line. We're back to where we were. Woody marks eight rushes for eight yards too. They have a key third and one where they're absolutely stopped. They have a fourth and one. They have a second and one where they don't even get that one yard. That was a huge transition in that game. Keelan Rutledge, I would say, and then Evan Brown especially, were getting destroyed.
49:59What was wrong was they were playing Dexter Lawrence. There it is!
50:03Nick Shook:There it is! It took me a while to get there. So you're saying that you're going to give the Bengals defense some credit? They were incredible. Jonathan Allen and Dexter Lawrence were two of the five players with at least four pressures. So now there's 55 attempts, but it was the first half too. Jonathan Allen had six pressures in the first half alone. So he and Dexter Lawrence were killing the interior of the line. So a center, Evan Brown, and then Rutledge got some two. They had a ton of penalties. I mean, the offensive line was so bad and was the problem. I know we're going to sound like CJ Stroud defenders.
50:43Like for the most part, I thought he played quite well in this game. Like there were three or four drops. Jared Wayne was way too big of a part of what was going on. Nico Collins, of course, didn't play. And they're throwing the ball to Jared Wayne in key spots. I think seven targets. He only had 33 yards in a lot of the high leverage moments. Like he's just not winning those battles. But I think it started up front.
51:05Jourdan Rodrigue:Yeah. And they, correct me if I'm wrong, but Ed Ingram came into this game, did not, was not able to play. was not healthy through the week. But also to that point, I don't know that he would have fared that much better. I had real concerns about the right side of that offensive line last week as well. It's a real credit to the Bengals and what they knew they would be able to do immediately against vulnerable position groups like this interior and like this offensive line is overall when they made that Dexter Lawrence trade. They called their shot with the high pick that they sent for it and he showed up.
51:36Right. Last week, he was impactful without being in the box score. This week, he was incredibly all-pro level Dexter Lawrence impactful and was in the box score.
51:47Jourdan Rodrigue:It's so hard to have eight carries for one yard. One yard per carry. Yeah, Wyatt Teller was the replacement at guard who did not fare well. My heart is breaking. The Texans, our Super Bowl pick, Greg. I'm not that worried. 0-2, we're going to be fine. Not yours. My Super Bowl pick won today. Well, they're going to make. Which was who? Cincinnati Bengals. They're going to lose to the Rams. Okay, good job by there. Look, this was a hard start to the season for the Bengals on paper. Zach Taylor is fired up about it after going 2-0. Tough win on the road.
52:22Nick Shook:Talking last night, that's the team I knew was going to get off the bus. That's the team that's going to get off the bus, send a message, okay, to the conference, to the league, okay, that we're here to stay, man. We got a complete team right now, and that's what we got today. I do like him already thinking, like, we're sending messages to the entire league. We're thinking that much about in week two, we are a complete team. Joey B is happy. Joey B is happy. Joey B is so happy. You know who else is happy? The Broncos fans, at least after halftime on Sunday in a game that they felt like they absolutely needed to win.
52:57They did it.
52:59Jourdan Rodrigue:Knicks is under center. Brings Atkins in motion. They run the power OG right side.
53:04Nick Shook:Coleman, touchdown Denver. He got behind Nate Atkins. Mile high salute. John Terrell Davis. And then patiently waited for a crease, and it was a huge crease.
53:20Going into halftime. Starting to wonder about this Broncos team. The offense. You're trailing. I think they had, what, three points in the first half? It's 10-3 at halftime, Jacksonville. And then the Broncos rip off a pretty dominant second half. They win it 17 to three. It's one of many Bo Nix double digit comebacks since he has entered the league. You saw some deep shots. You saw the defense clamped down on a good Jaguars offense. To me like that, that is a mature playoff type of performance, even in week two to make sure you're managing the schedule and not go. Oh, and to bone it.
53:59Nick Shook:This is a big managing the schedule episode. Bo Nix ties Lamar Jackson for second most such wins since the league in 2024. And it's a great win for them. It's a successful win for them. It's a triumph. You're home opener. You come way victorious, especially after what happened in week one. But it's so funny how in the first couple weeks of the season, how these games can be so different from half to half as these teams figure out what works, what doesn't. They feel out their opponent. Because early in this game, it was all Jaguars. It was all Trevor Lawrence. He was so good. but he's making throws that are out of this world.
54:32Nick Shook:He's fitting them into tight windows. Everything looks good. They just can't quite capitalize on these offensive drives, and they end up letting the Broncos hang around, and it all changes in the second half. They're so close to putting it away. They're running speed option with Trevor Lawrence, and then he finds Brenton Strange, and Alex Singleton gets penalized for roughing unnecessary contact. First and goal at the Denver three. Jacksonville ends up getting stopped. Then Riley Moss gets a pick. And all of a sudden, the whole game just shifts in the Broncos' favor. Riley Moss picks off Trevor Lawrence.
55:05Nick Shook:They go down and score a touchdown. Then they miss a field goal the Jaguars do on their ensuing drive. The Broncos capitalize again, and that's how you win by seven points.
55:14Jourdan Rodrigue:Sort of an inverted Tyler Shuck situation.
55:17Nick Shook:Kind of, yes. The issue, though, is with the Broncos, and this is not to knock Bo Nix, but it was so up and down. It's so frustrating. It's so inconsistent. And then they find this rhythm. That's Bo Nix's entire career. He is incredibly streaky and incredibly effective. And their offense is effective when it is. And when it's not, it's not doing anything. And that speaks to that stat of the comebacks. I had a feeling, though, when multiple insiders decided to do the same point, which was watch out for the kicking record this week. Cam Little, he's going back to Denver. He could hit 73 yards. And I was just like, you're tempting fate here.
55:55I don't know why multiple insiders are sending this out. And then Cam Little misses a big one. And then the Broncos hit theirs. Mature. Like for a team that like is just looking for something. J.K. Dobbins got hurt in this game, trying to figure out a running game, just something they can build off. And I know you were impressed with Jalen Waddell as well in this game.
56:15Nick Shook:Yeah, he went crazy. Finally, he had a nice little breakout performance, which was great because finally it's week two. I mean, let's. Yeah, but he was absent. His whole offense was absent last week. Just be like, he was at only week two.
56:26Jourdan Rodrigue:I know.
56:26Nick Shook:I know. He was, he was the only bright spot in this offense in the first half. He goes crazy from the start. He gets a 49 yarder, but it gets them down to the Jacksonville one. And then they can't capitalize. They ended up settling for three there. Like that just kind of typified the way this offense was and how they struggled in the first half. And, and luckily he was one of the most persistent contributors in this game overall and kind of kept them afloat until they were able to, you know, find a rhythm in the second half. And Nix, I mean, Knicks was an incredible pass down the sideline. Miss.
56:55Nick Shook:Why did you throw a fade to the back corner of the end zone that gets intercepted on third and goal? Things like that. But for six quarters, the Broncos have not been great. For two quarters, they were very good. And they did it in their style, defense first.
57:06Jourdan Rodrigue:What did Jonah Coleman look like? I was really happy to see he got a little, carry the rock a little bit.
57:11Nick Shook:It was a fun little fourth quarter for him. You know, breaks through the line, gets touchdown. Kind of defined that second half for them on the ground as they were able to squeeze the life out of the Jaguars. I think their last possession was incredibly long. Let's see here. Well, no, 441 to end the game. But it felt like the fourth quarter they had the ball the majority of. I think it was like 10 or 11 minutes of the 15 minutes.
57:29Jourdan Rodrigue:And that's what the Jaguars want to do to you with their run game. And, you know, I think we all thought that, you know, it's not like they were terrible in the run game. You know, Basial Tootin, five yards per carry, 65 yards and a touchdown. But I think we expected the Broncos after how bad they looked against the Chiefs in the run game. And yes, it's a different run scheme and coming off of that type of a game. Of course, you're going to make corrections if you're Vance Joseph. But I just thought that some of the maybe the angles that they took were harbingers of something worse to come. But it's the Broncos defense.
58:01Jourdan Rodrigue:You can you can trust them five times out of 10, eight times out of 10.
58:04Nick Shook:Yeah, most most of the time. And I like how you described it as a mature win because the Jags are so close to putting this game away on that driver. They get they get held and don't end up converting that into a touchdown. And it felt like they were going to score a touchdown. This game was basically going to be over. the Broncos immediately realized this is our opportunity. And once that interception happened, they were all systems full speed ahead. And they were the Broncos of old, just like that. Yeah. Look, the Broncos six months ago, the Broncos had three straight punts in the first quarter, but like so many of these games in 2026, because of the kickoff rule and because of the effectiveness of passing short passing attacks, like there's so few possessions in this game.
58:44So you mentioned that interception. by Lawrence. That's one of just four possessions in the second half. They only get the ball two more times. One of those is the missed field goal. And yeah, they're often sputtered down the stretch. But the biggest thing is just the Broncos played keep away three straight drives scoring and they get the win. So both these teams at one and one. Jaguars with a fun one next week against the Patriots. And the Broncos thrilled to get out of here with the victory. Let's go to Tennessee where Robert Sala was trying to get off the schneid. Could he get his first victory as Titans head coach?
59:21Hurts lines them up again.
59:25Nick Shook:He's back. He's looking. He steps up. He is firing. Complete. Devontae Smith inside the four. Comes down with the ball. There is hope. They are down. First and goal at the three. 14 seconds left. Hurts is back. Here comes the rush. He fires. Touchdown! Darius Cooper! Oh, that's Merrill Reese at the top of his register. A two-play sequence. So pretty. That first throw by Jalen Hurts. Oh, tingles. And the catch by Devontae Smith. We had to show them both. The Eagles go down the field needing a touchdown to win with under two minutes to go. The exact sequence you dream about as a kid. and Jalen Hurts and Devontae Smith and Darius Cooper help deliver.
1:00:21How did Jalen Hurts get it done?
1:00:22Jourdan Rodrigue:It was, first of all, his 15th career game winning drive. And it was not just him and Devontae Smith. And those two should get so much credit. Devontae Smith had a couple incredible catches this game and none more clutch than that one right there. But it's also Jalen Hurts hitting Dontavian Wicks for a 20-yard gain on a third down and six as they're driving. than that throw and obviously even prettier catch. That was another third and six. And then he hits Darius Cooper for his first career touchdown a play later. And all of it was sort of set up in a way by a first down sack by Jalen Carter on Cam Ward in the previous possession by the Titans, a goal to go situation, which ultimately holds them, knocks them out of field goal range eventually, and ultimately holds them to a field goal there, setting up Jalen Hurts and the Eagles offense to get to go down and score a touchdown to win the game.
1:01:19Jourdan Rodrigue:It was a complimentary football in the in the best way on behalf of the Eagles, who got a little nervous by the Titans because of a couple of really good drives that Cam Ward put together, especially a drive in the in the third quarter that he put together a couple of nice throws and scored and they hung around and hung in it. And and then finally, you know, the Eagles just had to put their foot down.
1:01:42Nick Shook:It was such an interesting study, I think, of the highs and lows of a Jalen Hurts game. Because if you just checked in on this game here and there, you would see him throwing an interception that almost gets taken back for a touchdown. You would see like, oh no. But then you also see the beautiful touchdown pass to Devontae Smith. You see the one that we just ran there that sets up the game winner. And I guess this is just what you take with this offense as it currently stands. This is a new system under Sean Manning. It's only week two. You got to kind of figure it out as you go. And you're happy to leave Nashville with a victory on a day that was so hot and the field was so hot that guys' cleats were melting.
1:02:14Jourdan Rodrigue:Yeah, it was interesting. I kept actually having to remind myself that Jalen Hurts had thrown the interception because the rest of it was really smooth. Everything around them was a little bit chaotic. You know, they changed around their offensive line. Cam Juergens got moved to left guard. Drew Kendall moved to center. Saquon Barkley got a stinger early in the game, ended up coming back in the second half with this giant spaceship-looking neck roll on. and it ended up with nine yards rushing right and struggled the the entire interior offensive line struggled and Jeffrey Simmons was dynamic and effective during this game at certain times the the the Titans were blending some of this outside in like delayed outside in pressure and and and stunting guys and all of the stuff that was really bothering the Eagles offensive line and their offense in general at certain points the the two interceptions Amari Hooker makes a great read off of a blitz that's happening in front of him, jumps a pass where he knows Jalen Hurts is going to put the ball because that's the way that he's seeing the field in that moment.
1:03:12Jourdan Rodrigue:And then Marcus Harris gets his first career interception on a deep shot that he's, that Hurts is letting go as he's getting hit by Jeffrey Simmons. So there were some points in this game where the Titans had chances to hang around and come back in it. And they did. And Cam Ward, like I mentioned, the game tying touchdown drive is a couple of really nice throws that he made to Calvin Ridley. And then a gunner helm catch for a catch and run that gets them into scoring position. And then Cam Ward runs in the touchdown himself. It was cool to see that growth from him. And yes, it's a loss for the Titans, but the way that they were able to hang with this team and yes, Philly was kind of start, stop, start, stop at certain points, but a team being able to hang around and look like our, we love this word for the Titans creditable through so much of this game.
1:03:55Jourdan Rodrigue:I thought it was really important.
1:03:57Nick Shook:I think it's important to be having a lead in the fourth quarter and the home game like that, especially how you were just ineffective against the jets last week. it's small steps I'm not a moral victory fan but it's small steps forward it's very encouraging to have a chance to win a game against a team like the Eagles you just have to do it week after week because a lot of times we've just seen the moral victory is followed by a crushing loss another bad performance so if they can stack weeks that's great they only had 14 first downs on offense but yeah give Hertz credit I watched that last drive and he went 6 for 8 for 61 yards on the last drive
1:04:31Jourdan Rodrigue:It was like a totally different game than everything else. It was so wild to me. I just kept having to remind myself, oh yeah, I'm watching the same game right now. The six for eight, the two incompletions where he avoided a sack, which was one of the best plays of his drive with a throwaway and Wicks dropped a pass. So like that was an absolutely perfect way to end it. Hasn't been perfect overall. Dallas got hurt in this game. They were out of tight ends, basically. I mean, I know Johnny Munn is there. This is Johnny Munn to race. It is. like Zach Ertz is probably going to get called up from ESPN to, to the Eagles cause they lost Calcaterra.
1:05:08They haven't had their, their rookie stowers and then got her, got hurt in this game. So on one hand, a moral victory for cam Ward and the Titans. On the other hand, the second straight week in opposing fan base has kind of come and take over your stadium. Not fun. The jets fans would never allow that to happen. At least not early in the season. They were, they were in for a fun one. in overtime until it wasn't. Dagger drawn.
1:05:35Nick Shook:26 yard field goal to champ. Orzik on the snap. Wheeling down on one knee. Off the left hash mark. Snap. Placement. Trey smacks it to the upper. Yes! It is good! It is good! And a dagger delivered by the rookie. Trey smacked! The Packers win it 20-17. Great job by Wayne Larrabee on WRNW. Great job by Eric Roberts, who slides in the dagger being unsheathed. I don't think I've ever heard that one before. As they get it out to get that game-winning field goal, the Packers survive the Jets 20-17 in a game where they had 162 yards of offense. that's metric system offense in the first 60 minutes of this game they had to go to regulation and they still didn't top 200 yards of offense their defense and their special teams kept setting up Jordan Love and this offense which still has problems but you'd rather have problems Jordan with a win but man they have problems on the offensive line because of injuries going into next week already.
1:06:53Jourdan Rodrigue:Tons of injuries I'll get to in a minute. You know, Zach Bacoboile was carted off in the, in the first few minutes of the game. And Jaden Reed also was Jaden Reed is going to be staying overnight, according to Matt LaFleur in the New York city area to just get further testing, but does have movement in his extremities, but it was a catastrophic start to this game. I wrote down in my notes near the end of this as overtime began, which of these coaches is going to get saved for their own, for their own, from their own decision making or which of these like results is going to sort of smooth over the fact that something completely unacceptable had happened previously.
1:07:31Jourdan Rodrigue:And in the case of Aaron Glenn, the clock management near the end of regulation for Matt LaFleur, for his defense, setting up the offense multiple times late in the game, including by including my plays that we had been waiting to see this Packers defense actually prove that it could do this. Um, and twice in the fourth quarter. And then ultimately, you know, they're the ones that win in overtime. So maybe they don't think we don't think about it as much, but they certainly will. And they should. Yeah. They got the ball at the Jets 19 yard line, needing a field goal to tie a touchdown to win after a long return after their defense, you know, got the ball back for them.
1:08:10And instead they go three and out, kick the field goal. Then they get the ball at the 50 with a minute and 15 left after Aaron Glenn messes with the clock management at the end of that. He had previously gone for a fourth down. Heck, let's hear that fourth down. Aaron Glenn decides to go for it around midfield with 1.15 to go.
1:08:35Nick Shook:Fourth down, a yard to go, a little bit less than a yard to the midfield marker. For the Jets, out of the shotgun. Here's a snap to give to Braylon Allen in the right side of the line. Stacked up, driven down. He's short. he's short the first down Lucas Van Ness that game oh yeah it was huge Jeremy Ruckert's gotta block him he's gotta cut him off on the inside you cannot allow interior penetration on the most important play of the game but it was so indicative of what went wrong for the Jets and if you watch the first clip when we played at the start of this portion of the recap you saw Aaron Glenn kind of just staring off into the abyss understanding that he was about to lose a game that they probably should have won.
1:09:18Nick Shook:And it was because of minor mistakes like that, just in key spots, whether it was the fact that, like you said, clock management issues, they had, I think, four, seven drives in the second half, between the second half and overtime, one lasted four more minutes, four minutes or longer. Everything else was short. They couldn't put away this game. And it's because of small issues like that. It's a really a big bummer from the Jets perspective, because they played well enough defensively on a very sloppy day, on a very rainy day in New York to win this game. Jordan Love was not good against this defense.
1:09:50Nick Shook:Obviously, the conditions weren't the best. This is a sloppy game in terms of penalties on both sides, but it's that play right there. Moments like that that just show as much as you like the Jets and you believe in the Jets, they still got to go overcome being the Jets. The third and two should have set up
1:10:05Jourdan Rodrigue:something different to me. They ran the same play twice in a row. The third and two run stuff. The Packers hold up, first of all, which is so important because we have been questioning since training camp what this defensive line is going to look like. And so they hold up on the run stuff there. Then it's fourth and one. They decide Frank Reich decides to call a shotgun run on fourth and one right after they had the defensive line had gotten plenty of push on the third and two. And and that's to say, too, I liked some of the stuff that Frank Reich was doing. There was a Geno Smith drive that ended in a Garrett Wilson touchdown where I really liked the what they were presenting.
1:10:40Jourdan Rodrigue:They were moving the Packers defense from side to side. They were taking the teeth out of some of the design pressure that Jonathan Gannon was trying to bring. And then in very quick succession, they were firing down the middle of the field and on these in breakers and ultimately getting Garrett was, I thought, okay, the jets have something here. And then it just all corresponds or it all coalesces into this, like just cacophony of errors in the last part. Yes. What is happening? A team that doesn't know how to win. They don't know how to close. Well, it was a very like you had me in the first half.
1:11:13I'm not going to lie that the Jets had us thinking anything possible could happen. You know, Gino ends up with 247 yards passing in this game. Their passing was probably the most consistent element of the game. The Packers couldn't run. The Jets couldn't run. The Packers go one for nine on third down. But that clock management you were talking about at the end of the game was inexcusable, mostly because Aaron Glenn didn't even know what he did. He's out to lunch, and they have no one also talking to him about this. What happened was the Packers ran the ball with about a minute left in the game, and Aaron Glenn has all his timeouts, and all he has to do is call a timeout, and they can get the ball back, and he doesn't use his timeouts, and they ask him whether he considered using his timeouts.
1:12:04to give his offense a chance. He was just like trying to get to overtime. In theory, maybe he could have been worried that they were going to go for it on fourth and five, but they weren't going to go for it on fourth and five. And instead, he gets sort of Jedi mind tricked into doing absolutely nothing and actually lets the Packers have an attempt at a Hail Mary. The whole thing was like, I was watching it thinking, even Matt LaFleur would have known what to do there. I think 31 coaches out of 32 would have handled that differently.
1:12:31Nick Shook:Yeah, Matt LaFleur did the whole take the delay a game, take the second runoff thing. But the funniest part, and I think this is just so fitting for this game, is that Hail Mary attempt. Ball goes like five yards. Well, I think he got sacked, right? He got hit while throwing. Right. He got hit while throwing. So the Jets look like a solid enough team. You mentioned the injuries on the Packers. Not only did Bako Boele, who's their best offensive lineman, go out, but Aaron Banks left with a toe injury. At one point when they had another injury, they were talking about possibly bringing in Tucker Craft to play on the offensive line.
1:13:01So the Packers get the win. They are not out of the woods yet. Both these teams won and won. Let's stay in the AFC East after the break with a team that I pay close attention to, the New England Patriots, who desperately needed to get off the schneid in week two.

I watched this game and you guys will have to tell me what you think when you watch it on Game Pass. You know, was this good defense or just bad offense? I'm leaning more towards bad offense. Yep. But it was pretty good defense too.
1:16:50Jourdan Rodrigue:I was going to say, can it be both? Yeah, it can absolutely be a little bit of both. I think the Patriots had a good plan. They played more man coverage than I would guess any team has played in a game this season. Christian Gonzalez just locking down DK Metcalf. DK Metcalf has been one of the worst, like least valuable players in the NFL this year through two weeks. It's very early, but he's had two total nightmare games back to back and Gonzalez shut him down. But you're without Carlton Davis and you can play man coverage because no one else really threatens you and allow them to mix up a lot up front.
1:17:27And the offensive line for the Steelers is absolutely awful. Our producer, Quab, wants us to just kill the Steelers. And I can't kill him any more than the Patriots. We're killing that offensive line. Let's actually hear another fumble that Aaron Rodgers had on this day.
1:18:08That was part of the most underrated brother group in the league. It's not the Watts. It's the Ellis's. That was Christian Ellis's. That set up a fourth and 43, Shuck. Oh, is that all? I believe I have it written down somewhere where that's the longest down in distance in many, many years. Fourth and 43.
1:18:32Nick Shook:I mean, that's what happens when the ball passes around and it needs a Benny Hill theme. I was expecting to see an example of Aaron Rodgers' age on that one. Instead, it wasn't even that. He just got absolutely sandwiched. He was tough in this game. He didn't, I don't think he played well, but I thought he's moved well and he's been willing to throw the ball in the middle of the field and deep down the field in both these games. It was just completely ineffective. Like this time it was like, okay, good ideas. And you were bad at it. And no one was open. Nine, nine targets, nine targets for DK Metcalf, four receptions.
1:19:07Nick Shook:Last week, 10 targets, four receptions, conspiracy bros, another bad week together. he right now can't catch the ball. Like there were a couple of drops in this game. There were a couple of plays where Rogers just gave him a chance to make a tough catch. And he didn't Gonzalez. Like I said, also just had great coverage on him, but it's not like Gonzalez was every single snap, although he was traveling. He just is in his head. And this is a Steelers team that now has what one touchdown offensively in two weeks. If you go back to last season, They have one touchdown in their last three games, but that's not the same coordinator.
1:19:45That's not fair.
1:19:46Jourdan Rodrigue:Hat tip to Brooke Pryor of ESPN, who my friend who shouted out one touchdown in the last 25 quarters of regulation play at some point in the fourth quarter. Here was the stat. It wasn't that fourth and 43 was the longest fourth and down in distance, which maybe it was, maybe it wasn't. I don't know. That was the longest sack. Like the, it was a negative 36 on a sack since at least 1977, maybe because they never, they didn't keep track before that. That was the longest sack because that's recorded as a sack in recorded NFL history. So we were here for history, even if we weren't here for a lot of good offense in this game.
1:20:21Jourdan Rodrigue:What did the Patriots do right on offense? Because I know we can only get you to hold yourself back from talking about the Patriots side of things.
1:20:31Nick Shook:And you're not very eager to talk about them.
1:20:33Jourdan Rodrigue:Yeah, I definitely have clocked that you are not volunteering a lot of. No, they ray the ball really well. They're back. No, they're definitely not. They ran the ball really well against a good Steelers front. Over 50 % success rate. Having Travion Henderson in the game made a huge difference just because they need explosive plays. And he had an explosive long touchdown run in this game. But they were pretty consistent. Ramondre Stevenson fumbled the ball. I believe that was on a catch, as Ramondre does. But he was effective when he ran the ball. But offensively, they didn't protect well. They were just really reliant on a few explosives.
1:21:12They only had 13 points on offense, and Drake May was holding the ball too long. It wasn't as bad as Seattle, I would say. He only made one bad decision, but he paid for it with an interception. If not for that, you end up with almost 10 yards per attempt, but his play, I think, was worse than the numbers show.
1:21:32Nick Shook:I am concerned. Seeing that interception that he threw, I understand what he's going for, but the ball is short and I'm just starting to wonder based on maybe some protection issues, a lack of comfort in an offense that he should know. Well, is there an issue with Drake may and decision-making right now? Yeah. I mean, that, that was a bad decision. They, they are too reliant. Like they were last year on explosives. Like they had a 29 yarder to Henry, a 30 yarder to Raritan and a 63 yard play to Dobbs where May's best plays right now are just kind of breaking contain. and not being in structure.
1:22:09And then they're also just dealing with injuries. Michael Wenu, they're potentially their best offensive lineman, broke his ankle. So he's presumably out for the season. Draymond Jones, their best pass rusher, left with a shoulder injury, did not come back. They were not with Carlton Davis. They lost two safeties in this game. Del Pettis and Craig Woodson, the injury, and then Raritan, who had that nice catch, left pretty quickly with a thigh injury and was ruled out. So they lost about six or seven starters in this game, most of them on defense. So if you want it to feel even worse about the Steelers' offense.
1:22:39There you go, Mike McCarthy. But the reality of it is the detail's not there, and that's on coaching.
1:22:44Nick Shook:It starts with me. I'm calling the offense. I have to get the detail better. So if you need someone, fire away, because I felt it on Wednesday and Thursday. I'm a veteran coach. I know better, and I didn't do a good job. He felt it on Wednesday and Thursday.
1:23:04Jourdan Rodrigue:Yeah, that's telling to me. that means to me that he was not thinking that they were practicing at the level that was going to make them, you know, show up. Not a good sign. You got to adjust. And Aaron Rogers said after the game, we need to tell Mike, uh, the plays that will have a better chance at succeeding. Like because they did ask him about that quote specifically, like we need to help him out. If we think plays aren't going to be working that much better. And another part of the press conference included Mike McCarthy going full third person and go, offense needs to be better. Mike McCarthy needs to be better.
1:23:38You know who doesn't need to be better? Drew, mother, beep, and lock. Empty backfield. Lock
1:23:47Nick Shook:from the shotgun. Four-man rush. Looks, throws to the back of the end zone. It's caught! Touchdown! Seahawks! Guess who? I'll give you a hint. It starts with J-S-N from 12 yards and an Absolute laser to Jax in the back of the end zone. And the Seahawks extend their lead 23-7. And Jax has been in on all of them. Ooh, nobody is doing it like Jackson Smith and Jigba early in this season. 155 yards and three touchdowns. In a game where it's not like they had a ton of passing yards. It's once again the JSN show. this time the Cardinals did not put up much of a fight, totally dominated in yardage on the scoreboard and by a man who was making Jordan Roderick giggle for much of the day, Drew Locke.
1:24:44Jourdan Rodrigue:Yeah, because he gave no Fs, man. He just, he threw the rock. He threw the pill. It was so fun to watch. He was 19 of 26 for 235 yards and three touchdowns. This absolute ass kicking brought to you by Jackson Smith and Jigba. Seattle's 10 straight win against the Arizona Cardinals, the longest active streak in the NFL, a little insult to injury there. Seattle's defense also bottled up Jacoby Brissett, who did seem to be dealing with some sort of a leg issue, but kept playing throughout the course of the game and neutralized all of the skill guys that were so much fun to watch in the week one win over the Chargers.
1:25:23Jourdan Rodrigue:You know, this was all Seahawks after outside of the opening trade, trading of touchdowns between the two teams. This was absolutely Seahawks dominant. They won in every phase, particularly set up by the defense. But Drew Locke showed up, and that was really fun to watch him play. One thing I thought about the Seahawks and Patriots was it was a nice advantage to have that Wednesday game, and you have a serious extra rest going into this. You didn't have to travel or anything. So that put the Cardinals and the Steelers in a tough spot, and it looked like it. I mean, 381 yards to 151. This was not one where the scoreboard lied.
1:25:57And, you know, like, what did you see out of the Seahawks secondary where Michael Wilson has seven targets, 18 yards? Marvin Harrison Jr. has one target. So he has one catch now through two weeks. What did you see out of this defense?
1:26:09Jourdan Rodrigue:It was really interesting. First of all, they did take the ball away. Julian Love had an interception again. But they also, they were just covering really well. They were switching assignments very, very clearly. They basically neutralized Michael Wilson, Marvin Harrison, junior. They neutralized Kendrick Bourne, who was a big factor last week. And with Trey McBride, anytime Jacoby Brissett would try to feed the ball to Trey McBride, there were, you know, at least three other Seahawks in the area, the way that they could absolutely break off of their guy that they were responsible for and swarm to wherever Trey McBride was on the field.
1:26:47Jourdan Rodrigue:He had their only touchdown of the game. And it was the only time they could isolate him away from multiple players, at least in his area who could get there quickly. And that was because he was off to the left of the stack and the only other person, the only other item that's defending him is a sideline at that point. So for me, that was a really effective game. It's the Seattle, like prototypical thing that we love to see from Seattle, which is they just absorb all energy and matter, right? And then by the end of the game, and they're just, it's boa constrictor. Like that's how he talked about it on Hard Knocks.
1:27:19And so many of their games last season were like that, where the first half, it's just, it's one thing. And then the second half, it just it's a bully. And look, Emmanuel Wilson's going to be a hot fantasy football pickup this week. 21 carries 92 yards. Jadarian Price leaves with a chest injury. He has not been able to stay healthy so far as a pro. So that's one small negative so far.
1:27:40Nick Shook:A note on your boa constrictor description. Final drive for the Seahawks in this game. 10 minutes and 14 seconds. Ends in a touchdown. That is absolutely outrageous.
1:27:48Jourdan Rodrigue:Yeah. And one note on Jadarian Price, by the way, they did say it was a chest injury and that he had testing and all of that, except he was caught by the sideline camera talking to his running, talking to his running backs coach about pointing to his shoulder and saying the word shoulder. So I'm kind of like, OK, we'll see as the week progresses, like what the nature of this actually is. But yes, to your point, Emmanuel Wilson, I thought, played really, really well. This was a sneaky big special teams game, too. We talk a lot about Mike McDonald really caring about every phase of football and really honing in on those types of advantages.
1:28:21Jourdan Rodrigue:There were there were big Arizona penalties in that phase. And then there was also a forced fumble that was recovered for a big Seattle game that set up another touchdown. They lost the fumble, but then they flew to the ball and recovered it and then returned it to set up a touchdown in the third quarter. So between Drew Locke, not looking like, you know, your average number two quarterback and this passing game being carried by JSN and the defense doing its thing as usual, this was all around a win for Seattle in every phase.
1:28:52Nick Shook:Next two games, Washington and the Chargers. I think newsflash, the Seahawks are good. And I think they're going to be 4-0. Well, let's not count the Chargers especially. It's just like an automatic win right now, especially not if Drew Locke is still starting. But what this does is any up in the air status that Sam Darnold has that like you can push him back a week. And yet the Seahawks were really confident going into this week. They let it be known through the insiders that like they were expecting a big performance out of Drew Locke and they got it. And it almost doesn't matter who's that quarterback when the other team has two point seven yards per pass.
1:29:30They don't they throw like they drop back to pass 30 times and they don't get over 81 yards. like you're going to win. And it's great that, that drew lock make it happen.
1:29:40Jourdan Rodrigue:Different. Jacoby Brissett could not have looked different week one to week two, in terms of how difficult everything felt and seemed. Then the other side, you know, when you see a quarterback come out with a wristband, like drew lock did, you're like, ah, this guy, I don't know, especially a backup quarterback, but drew lock and is flapping around wristband. We're just absolutely lasering it all over the field. He had a couple of really, really difficult throws that he had a little juice with too. Like he kind of like side-armed one of those touchdowns. Like he played really genuinely well. I love it.
1:30:12I love the Lacassans that's happening right now. And unfortunately, yeah, a come down to earth game for this Cardinals team that falls to one and one Seahawks at two and open a little pressure on the Rams who will play on Monday night because they know after watching what happened in Santa Clara that they've got two wagons right now in the NFC West. First down and 12 from the 12. The throw, there is Kittle.
1:30:38Nick Shook:All alone, and he catches it in the end zone. A big spike for George. Touchdown, 49ers. Welcome back home, George Kittle. This drive belonged to him. We love George Kittle, and this time it's not Kittle in the middle. It's Kittle out in the flat, and it is an absolute scheme buster, and they bust it. The first 49ers teams in 35 years to score touchdowns on their first five drives of the game. By the time they scored those five drives, the game was almost over. 35 to 13. The 49ers walk over Miami. Brock Purdy with only two incompletions on the day. Shook, what stood out to you the most from this beatdown?
1:31:25Nick Shook:I mean, there's so much. First off, I really wish, I aspire to live life with as much joy as George Kittle exhibited on that touchdown reception.
1:31:34Jourdan Rodrigue:I'll hand you a smelling salt and you can learn. Oh, okay.
1:31:36Nick Shook:That's the secret. All right. I'm jacked up. I'm ready to do the show. Brock Purdy's dealing. He is absolutely dealing right now. He is so comfortable. He is completely in rhythm in this offense. I don't know what happened from last year to this. Not that he wasn't a great quarterback last year because he was solid. He missed a lot of last year due to injury. He is on a different level right now. And no matter what is presented to him by the two defenses he's faced so far, he just shreds them. There was a couple of plays in this game. There was one where he's rolling out to his left and he pump fakes.
1:32:04Nick Shook:Defender bites the pump. He extends a little bit more, throws an absolute dime between two defenders to Mike Evans, who nearly scores on that play. The offense was rolling the entire time. You know, they scored five touchdowns in their first five possessions, like you said. And, you know, again, I know it's coming against the dolphins, but it's just a team taking care of business and looking really good, you know, while doing it. I'm disappointed that we have a couple teams and things can change, will change. But we're going to hit the Falcons next and we got the Dolphins now that like this early in the season feel like just cakewalks.
1:32:37Well, like I know, I know they're playing San Francisco who just look great against the Rams as well. But I expected the defense to probably be the tougher side for Miami. And like through two weeks, like they were pretty embarrassing last week. They were lucky not to give up a 40 burger against the Raiders, I thought, a week ago. And right now, they're just looking for a solution.
1:32:57Jourdan Rodrigue:I would push back on that just a little bit because, first of all, it's a lot of young players who are needing to get these types of reps and valuable reps. And second of all, to me, there are some big-time slips and some gaffes, but you kind of... Jeff Halfley knows, and they said it right at the beginning of the season, that those are going to happen. The 49ers are going to put you in hell, especially your young linebackers, linebackers, especially how efficient and productive they're able to be. For me, it's like, I'm not looking for the dolphins to be tough to get, you know, tough to eliminate right now.
1:33:31Jourdan Rodrigue:I'm looking for them to get tougher to play. I just want them to be watchable. On the other side of it, I don't think we're going to get to it. I don't think the Falcons are as salvageable, truly.
1:33:41Nick Shook:Yeah, we are going to get to that. I thought that one instance, and I believe this ended in an incompletion, Malik Willis is scrambling to the right. and it looks like he's going to get the edge and be able to pick up maybe a first down on the ground. And then there's Fred Warner, step for step for him laterally. And that just kind of illustrated the difference in talent between these two teams and what they're dealing with. What it is, is it's a low ceiling operation right now offensively. 19 of the first 24 plays were in 49er territory. They got three points out of it. They just, they had an opportunity to score a touchdown.
1:34:09Nick Shook:They ended up settling for a field goal later in the game. It's just a low ceiling. Got to be basically perfect to really maximize your opportunities. And this team right now is just not going to be there. and it's a work in progress. A rebuild looks like this. You just want incremental steps. Again, not a fan of moral victories, but for this team, you just got to be more and more competitive as the weeks go on. Yeah, the five possessions in the first half between the two teams was like one of the five lowest possession games of the last 25 years. This keeps happening and it was because the Dolphins offense played well.
1:34:38You know, a long field goal drive. They just can't finish drive. A 17 play drive, a 12 play drive, but it's just a tough way to win. Obviously, if you don't finish drives, But then in the second half, like if your defense is giving up a touchdown, five straight drives, that's not going to happen. At least George Kittle, I thought on that 40 yard catch that he had showed a little more juice than he had week one. He ends up leading them with 80 yards. They continue to have major injury problems in terms of their pass catchers. Demarcus Robinson has a high ankle sprain after this game. Mike Evans left this game with a hip injury.
1:35:13Kyle Shanahan says it's not that serious. the running game. If you were trying to pick nits, like, did you have any problems with how the 49ers defense played and the running game didn't really get much going today with McCaffrey or Kalen Black?
1:35:26Nick Shook:Yeah, and because Brock Purdy played so well, it didn't really matter. It kind of covered that up. But there was a lack of consistency on the ground from them. And I do think it was more a product of circumstance and the way the game was flowing than anything. I still trust this running game to find some effectiveness because I like their top two running backs. But it's not always a good sign when Brock Purdy is leading you and rushing with three attempts. The Dolphins numbers look a little better because there's a 71, 77 yard play by an R Miller. Can you, without looking, name who R Miller is on the Miami Dolphins of 2026?
1:36:00Either one of you. Ryan? Ryan Miller. I'm not familiar with his work. Good job. What a yards per catch average he has on this young season. 49ers get the win. A new pin. I feel bad. for picking on the Dolphins, especially because in the first half, they were very watchable. And you can't ask for more than a half of watchability out of them this year. Little engine that could. The Falcons definitely didn't give us that on Sunday. Let's go to Atlanta.
1:36:30Nick Shook:Trips left. London lined up in the slot closest to the line. Scrammed the shotgun snap. First NFL pass is tipped. Picked off again. Devin Lloyd. Far side 10. He's got the 5. Bullying toward the goal line. touchdown Carolina pick six Devin Lloyd Devin Lloyd with that pick six authored one of the best linebacker games I've ever seen read the line it is absolutely outrageous that pick six was the least impressive play he had because he just couldn't kind of good spot you know made a guy miss two more passes defense in this game including a beautiful interception and another diving play into an alley where it creates an interception for his teammate.
1:37:14Also had a sack, nine tackles, two tackles, four loss. Devin Lloyd was absolutely everywhere in a 34-3 win. He played so well that he took me off Bryce Young even leading this game, Jordan. You know I wanted to lead with Bryce Young having a monster game. But Devin Lloyd was too damn good and they only gave up three points.
1:37:35Jourdan Rodrigue:That's exactly what they invested in. When they went out in free agency and they spent a lot of money on Devin Lloyd and on Jalen Phillips, it was specifically so that they could make these high leverage plays happen in moments where you can't really trust this defense down over down all the time, especially not in the run game. They were they were fine today, but they really went out and they wanted players who could make these types of high leverage plays, get the ball back in this case score, but get the ball back into Bryce Young's hands where Bryce Young can cook, which he did for the second consecutive game.
1:38:11Yeah, that's the bigger takeaway here. Look, the Falcons are a mess on offense, throwing the ball. Cooper Rush turned the ball over three times. We had a Jack Strand sighting in week two. And? That was his first throw. The pick six.
1:38:27Jourdan Rodrigue:No, that was Nick's point. And? It didn't go well. It didn't go well. It was total garbage time. Here's a problem with people always complaining about garbage time. A lot of time, teams stink in garbage time. Just like today, I saw multiple teams like CJ Stroud. Like they didn't get anything done in garbage time. There's no rule that says you have to. Jack Strand, yeah, dropped back to pass. I think 16 times took a sack, didn't top 60 yards passing in those garbage time. But that's too much on Jack Strand. Bryce Young was great in this game. I actually think the Falcons defense made things difficult on them.
1:39:00The final score to me lies a little bit in terms of like the total yardage was close in this game. A lot of the plays that they made were hard-earned, really good plays. They sent a lot of different pressures at him. They did get him under pressure, but for the second straight weeks, he's just really fun to watch, and he's a big playmaker. 28 yards to Tedaroa McMillan, 25 yards to Jalen Coker, who also had an awesome punt return. He's a playmaker. 55 to Leggett, and there were just a lot of beautiful throws to Bryce Young. Heck, let's watch one of them, his second touchdown to Darren Warren.
1:39:34Nick Shook:mcmillan cocker and ligette and a trips look to the left waller wide right shotgun snap brooks in the block quick throw near pylon it is caught for a touchdown by darren waller big people win people win that's a big man and what does bryce do he gives him a chance in these long forms I know I'm aging myself, but the go-go gadget arms when I was a kid. I mean, you can't, that's just, that's a mismatch.
1:40:07Jourdan Rodrigue:Is that Jake DeLome I hear? Is it? Oh, I don't know. I could hear his accent going. I think that was Jake DeLome, former Panthers quarterback. Man, Greg, you saw, you guys both saw in real time how happy that play made me. I've been honking for a year and a half for the Panthers to get more tight ends activated into the passing game. Last season, I saw those guys running wide open all the damn time. And this time, they're actually scheming Darren Waller up early. Again, similar to what we just talked about with that Trey McBride touchdown. The only other person that's able to defend or entity that's able to defend a tight end against, you know, when they're out wide in space like that is the sideline.
1:40:51Jourdan Rodrigue:And so the defender better be in the perfect position. And often with a large framed player, you simply cannot be. So for me, watching Darren Waller, two touchdowns today, watching Bryce Young find his playmakers, that was exceptional. Yeah, he did a really good job of, as the game went on, figuring out where the blitzes were coming from, recognizing it before it happened, either changing the protection or seeing it, and then just throwing behind it over and over again. Where so early in the game, it was bothering Bryce. And the thing I just love with him right now is he's always been aggressive.
1:41:25I think he's more aggressive, more effective with his aggression. Like he wants to push the ball down the field. He wants to throw the ball into tight windows and he's got a better group around him to do so. Chuba Hubbard has become RB1. If there was any doubt back-to-back games, he's looked really good. You're right. The run defense is a question. Even in this game, they gave up a lot of yards on the ground and they're not really running the ball well. But if you can pass the ball and then in this game, If you can, you know, stuff underwhelming quarterbacks into a locker, you'll win a bunch of games.
1:41:58So back on track, one and one for the Panthers.
1:42:00Nick Shook:Yeah, the thing with Bryce Young that I need to have uncovered by, you know, an intrepid reporter, maybe like yourself, Jordan, is what happened this offseason mentally for him because he is a different guy. He's playing like there's no tomorrow. He's taking risks that he would not take in years past, and he's doing it with more conviction, and it's more enjoyable and it's producing a higher success rate this year than ever in his career. And I know it's only two weeks. You saw it coming though. I mean, you've seen, he's been a streaky quarterback. Last year, his best games down the stretch were like this.
1:42:32The problem is he would just mix in stinkers about every three weeks to kind of throw you off the scent. But man, he finished last season strong and the Falcons 0-2 have finished this beginning sequence just as poor as possible. Maybe Michael Penix comes back next week and makes their primetime game look a little better. You asked before the show started, Jordan, on a social media post, what was my favorite moment of the day? And my favorite moment was actually when I went to check the flex scheduling rules because the Falcons are scheduled to be in primetime for the next three weeks. What were you thinking, schedule makers?
1:43:17I totally get Monday Night Football, week four. Roger Goodell wanted that game. Falcons-Saints, it's a rematch on the anniversary of Katrina. That should have been the Falcons' only primetime game all year. I'll accept that. Next week against the Packers, I'm sorry to Siciliano and Shook. I hope Penix plays that. But my happiest moment was finding the rules. They can flex out of a week five game. And I expect that game will be flexed out by the time this podcast finishes. NBC will get off Atlanta in week five, and they'll break the record for the earliest flex of all time. So I'm glad they moved that week up a little earlier.
1:43:56We're getting out of that third straight Falcons.
1:43:59Nick Shook:I will defend the schedule makers a little bit, though, because nobody could see, okay, maybe some of us could see this quarterback situation, you know, disintegrating as it has. They look like a bottom five team all offseason. We could have seen it coming. You know what we couldn't see coming? Jordan Rodriguez, A++ performance on this podcast. We're going to say goodbye to her now. She's going to dance off into the Los Angeles night, and Chucky and I will finish up with Sunday Night Football. It's a 40-yard attempt to win it from the near hash in overtime. Go signal. Kick is up. The kick by Butker, and the kick is good!
1:44:40Nick Shook:Good! And for the second straight year, the Chiefs have beaten the Colts in overtime. And a Harrison Butker field goal. Final score on the last play of the extra period in week two. Chiefs, Kansas City 33, the Colts 30. The Chiefs are 2-0. Oh, Mitch Holtis on KFNZ. What is old is new again. The Chiefs are scoring 33 points in prime time. And there's weird calls. And the Colts are getting their heart broken. 33-30. Is the final after these two teams trade scores back and forth all night. One of the best games of the young season. Definitely the best primetime game of the very young season. And the Chiefs, we have so much we can get into, but I want to get into the strategy behind everything that happened in overtime.
1:45:40Ken Walker, who's on pace for a huge workload this season, And Shook carries the ball for the key kind of touches to set up that field goal. But before that, you know, they'd gone back and forth trading field goals. The Colts had a decision down three, about three minutes to go. It's fourth and eight. They choose to go for the field goal at that point, essentially playing for the tie, maybe hoping to get the ball back again. And then they watch Patrick Mahomes do what Patrick Mahomes does. Did you agree with the decision?
1:46:14Nick Shook:Oh, you know, I think it really comes down to the quote. We like to lean on from Mike Tomlin, which is we do not live in our fears. And I felt like the Colts kind of lived in their fears a little bit. I thought for a moment that they were going to have the guts to go for it. Yeah. Steichen calls a play. They come out of the huddle. And what it ends up being is a Kodak moment where we get a picture of the defense and he backs off and he says, no, you know what? Don't like the look. Don't want to lose this way. I'm going to tie it and hope for the best. But the thing is, this is a game in which you gave up 30 points prior to that.
1:46:46Nick Shook:Yeah. No offense to a confidence or lack thereof that you have in your defense. Lou and a rumo's group. You have an opportunity right there to go for the win. Go get the win. And there was a sequence there, as you mentioned, where they take a look. The Kodak picture. Very well said. And basically. I think Collinsworth was right by saying if they were going to blitz, they would have gone for it. And when they're backing up in zone, they don't want to go for it. Daniel Jones was great all night against splits, almost nine yards per attempt. And I think the Colts just don't trust the receivers on some level because it's fair.
1:47:23It's basically Josh Downs. It's Tyler Warren, who's a good player, but maybe not like a man to man one on one winner right now. And then it's Laquan Treadwell is your wide receiver, too, because Alec Pierce went down with a very serious looking injury. tonight. We'll hope for the best for him, but it's called a heel injury at that point. And Keenan Allen, I don't know, we might be seeing the end of Keenan Allen here in his career. And I kind of get the lack of confidence. You just hate that it happened. And it happened after one of the strangest plays I've ever seen. We thought the game ended with the Chiefs recovering a Laquan Treadwell fumble on what was a long catch in overtime.
1:48:06For a second, it looked like a game winning Laquan Treadwell touchdown. He's behind LeJarius Need, but he bobbles it, has to slow down. He falls down and then he fumbles it. They rule the game's over, but upon review, they give the ball back to the Colts. Just like part of a weird game. It was at one moment the best moment of Laquan Treadwell's career, then the worst, and then just kind of like, oh, it was okay.
1:48:30Nick Shook:You know, we have to take a moment to give Noel Williams credit for the punch out that didn't end up actually being a forced fumble. And yes, a very strange ruling in which he's ruled down by contact because of the back of, I believe, Snead's hand barely grazes his hip as he gains control of the football. See, that's my problem with the way they went about overtime. Not to drill too deep down on this, but you just basically ripped off one of the best plays of your season so far. A bit of a miracle in some respects because it's Laquan Treadwell downfield making that catch and hanging on when he bobbles it.
1:49:01Nick Shook:And then you win the review. That saves you from losing in that sort of heartbreaking scenario. So put your foot on the gas. The next two plays, they run the ball conservatively against heavy boxes. It's third and 13. I don't like that approach. I don't either, but Jonathan Taylor was the best player on the Colts tonight. You know, he ends up with 132 yards from scrimmage. You are certainly not expecting to lose three yards in two runs at that point. I don't think they were necessarily being conservative. If anything, you kind of run there because you think you're in four down territory. You don't have to get it all at once.
1:49:34And they just didn't execute well. So give credit to the Chiefs defense in that scenario. If they'd given up a touchdown there, we would have said they were tired. Instead, they're the ones that bowed up and stopped Jonathan Taylor, who looked really good for most of the night. Kenneth Walker, I mentioned, goes for 117 yards on the ground, another 61 on six catches through the air, doing the quick math. That's 178 yards. He is on pace for 476 touches. That is almost double any amount of touches he's ever had. Any concern there? Or are you just happy about the fact that we're living in a world where the Chiefs are now going over 500 yards, 29 first downs.
1:50:15Mahomes goes for 382 yards and some beautiful throws. Honestly, I'm annoyed at myself. We waited this long. We're about to get out of here before pointing out the number one takeaway of this game is Patrick Mahomes looks back. Oh, he's so back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back in a way that he wasn't last year when he was healthy.
1:50:33Nick Shook:Yeah. Uh, there was a scramble. I think it wasn't an overtime, uh, in which he took off. And I think it was the only time he really scrambled for anything of significance, but it showed even from last week to this week, where I feel like he's already gotten more comfortable and faster and back to who he was prior to the ACL injury. And if that is an element, that's part of his game. And you add in Kenneth Walker and the fact that you're forced, not force feeding, but you're leaning on him significantly and he's, and he's gaining, you know, quality yards per carry. You can do anything offensively.
1:51:00Nick Shook:You can really do pretty much anything offensively and they can beat you in any way. And they're the toughest offense or one of the toughest offenses to play against for defense again in the NFL, which it felt like that was missing over the last few years. And so I hate to say it and not to quote Scott Zolak, but the Chiefs just may be back. I think so. Travis Kelsey looks a little faster this year. Again, it's early. He goes over 100 yards. Taequann Thornton goes four for 86, but he had the two biggest catches of the game. I mean, he had a gorgeous catch on a 45-yard throw from Mahomes at the end of, was it the second quarter?
1:51:37That was in the third quarter when Thornton made that catch. And that was the moment where I knew Mahomes was like really back. But Kelsey also dropped the pass on a great throw by Mahomes. There was another piss missile over the middle to Rasheed Rice that he caught going low. Like there were a lot of really nice throws. But for everyone that complains about like how that game ended or the Colts didn't show a lot of gumption, The Colts blitzed on third and 12 in the first drive of overtime. And the Chiefs pass protection held up, protected Mahomes really well. He goes deep down the field to Taequann Thornton, who makes a leaping catch on another good throw by Mahomes.
1:52:16Like they made the plays when it mattered. That was a third and 12. And they've got Khalil Benson at left tackle. Josh Simmons is nowhere to be seen. and Khalil Benson, who's an undrafted rookie, is playing really well. You know, they made the plays, and it's a heartbreaking loss for the Colts who have now lost nine straight. Which is insane. The stat that they showed of Sauce Gardner hasn't won a game on American soil because of injury, and then they won one in Germany last year, and then they kept losing for 664 days. He's going to have to wait seven more when he plays the 0-2 Texans.
1:52:50Nick Shook:Someone's going to be a miserable 0-3. Who thought that we would get to week three and both the Colts and the Texans would be 0-2? I mean, the Colts. That's more believable. The Colts, you could have seen with the schedule that they had Baltimore-Kansas City is a tough way to start. They played much better. I thought Daniel Jones, he looks like he knows this offense well. But like I said, Alec Pierce left this game with an injury. Charverius Ward also did. And Pierce's injury could be really serious. And they just don't have enough juice at wide receiver without him. This show had enough juice.
