In short
NFL Daily recap of the NFC coaches breakfast/league meeting, focusing on coach quotes and team news (especially Eagles/A.J. Brown, Rams QB situation, Lions/Seahawks/49ers notes, and Saints/Raiders/Browns headlines), plus some off-topic discussion of breakfast logistics and college basketball memories.
Guests
Greg Rosenthal and Patrick Claiborne (hosts). No other guests appear in the transcript.
Guest backgrounds
Greg Rosenthal is an NFL media host/commentator (in the Chris Wessling Podcast studio). Patrick Claiborne is his co-host/analyst on NFL Daily.
Key claims
- A.J. Brown trade status is “wide open” because Howie Roseman/Nick Sirianni repeatedly say only “A.J. Brown is a member of the Eagles,” without confirming expectations.
- Sean McVay publicly floated Jimmy Garoppolo and Kirk Cousins options while discussing Rams QB depth.
- Rams’ Puka Nacua is facing a civil assault/bite lawsuit; McVay emphasized “heart” and trust in Nacua.
- Dan Campbell said Panay Sewell is ready to move positions (left tackle background).
- John Lynch said the 49ers’ electrical substation injury story is a “big nothing burger,” and Trent Williams contract talks are progressing.
Notable examples
- McVay: “love to have Jimmy Garoppolo back,” “explore if it’s not Jimmy,” and “Kirk Cousins” references.
- Aaron Glenn: Geno Smith is “the starting quarterback… no doubt.”
- Kellen Moore (Saints): Alvin Kamara is part of the running back room; Chris Olave contract extension conversations.
- Browns: didn’t sign A.J. Epenesa after medical/physical concerns; Deshaun Watson extension “open minded.”

2:17Welcome to NFL Daily, where we love giving press conferences with stale eggs in front of us. They're stale? I'm Greg Rosenthal. I'm in the Chris Wessling Podcast studio. I am not at the annual league meeting in Phoenix. I'm with my friend Patrick Claibon, and we're going to talk about the gentlemen and the women asking the questions, in some cases at the annual coach's breakfast for the NFC.
2:44Patrick Claybon:I've just realized that we missed our opportunity to litter the table with breakfast items and like danishes and cups. Yeah, we're doing it. So my memory of having gone to the owners meetings, and I have seen it change over the years, was quite often the coach would bring his plate of breakfast to the table. But if he didn't get there early, Everyone's waiting for him there. And everyone just starts out, you know, they don't wait for him to eat the breakfast. So then the breakfast just sits there. And then, yes, then in that case, it's soggy and stale. I've kind of noticed, I think the coaches now, they separate the eating.
3:23I didn't see anyone really eating in our cameras. I've also noticed they've cut down the time from about 45 minutes to an hour to about half an hour. Smart move by the PR staffs around the league.
3:32Patrick Claybon:Well, I think the coaches can take that into their own hands. If they wanted to get there at a certain time and be like, hey guys, I know you got work to do. Why don't we share and fellowship and have an opportunity to no cameras, no recorders right now, to just have a meal and then have this discussion. I think that would be great. If a coach does that, I'll be a huge fan. So what happened? I would be too, and I don't think that's going to happen. And what we're going to do is go around the teams that talk today. And not all of them made news, but there's just little items of news, and some of them happened before the breakfast.
4:04Some of them are even involved AFC teams, but it's essentially going to be a distraction for us, Patrick, and especially for me to take a little break from just watching Braylon Mullins of the UConn men's Husky teams just hit that shot in every single replay possible. I don't know if you knew this, but my dad went to UConn, and I grew up a diehard UConn fan. And so for one day, I jumped back on the bandwagon to just enjoy one of the great sports moments, I think, of my lifetime.
4:33Patrick Claybon:Yeah, I mean, I think about this tournament so much because my son just had a birthday and there was a game winner. I think it was Florida. I say I think it was. My son was just born, so I remember everything about that. Oh, yeah. Florida hit a game winner in the tournament there while we were in the hospital. I was watching that on TV. Every single one of them is special, but when you have a personal connection, as you did, it was great. Okay, every one of them is special, but there aren't many that you hit from the logo to beat Duke to make the Final Four. That's next level. Very reminiscent, I think, of the Christian Leitner shot to beat Kentucky because of the stakes.
5:08Yes. And just the poetry of it all off a steal.
5:12Patrick Claybon:One of the more beloved teams that all of Kentucky basketball has accomplished things, that team that didn't win, they still feel great about that team. And it gets appreciated to the extent that a lot of teams probably should. And the American football fans out there that aren't into college basketball are like, what are you doing right now? I'm just losing my mind like Dan Hurley did when he just headbutted also his mom a referee after they hit the shot for no reason all right let's talk about someone who never loses his mind that's how he roseman he's just very calm cool and collected and he came to the annual league meeting with a strategy when asked about aj brown and the strategy was to say quote aj brown is a member of the eagles over and over and this was you know off camera it's kind of with the local reporters before the coach's breakfast and everything.
6:05And they ask him a lot of questions. And he said it in a few different ways, not as effusive, I would say as he did before free agency started, just kind of the standard AJ Brown is a member of the Eagles. And that's, that's all. What do you draw from that?
6:20Patrick Claybon:I think AJ Brown is a member of the Eagles. If something was going to happen, right. If something is happening, I don't know that this is going to be the spot where it's like, Hey, you know what? actually since you're asking me today here on the 30th of march why don't i reveal the entire operation and plans it's always seemed like a weird thing to me that like there's two teams the eagles would hope to play in an nfc championship game and there's three teams that maybe they would end up playing in a super bowl and it's like all right these are the teams we want to give aj brown to it seems like a weird discussion and situation to me that needs needs more information yet the the way he's saying it he's a member of the eagles and just leaves it at that and then nick sirianni spoke on Monday morning and repeated that line.
7:03And when they asked, do you expect him to be on the team? He just said, you know, he's a member of the Eagles. This is what you say when it's like, we don't know. And so to me, it just is wide open for what it's worth. Elliot Wolfe, who runs the Patriots front office with a big assist, I believe from Mike Rabel said, we have not, you know, he's a member of the Eagles. I believe Howie said it. He even quoted Howie. and that we have not had those discussions in a long time.
7:30Patrick Claybon:Is not squashing this, if A.J. Brown ultimately, Greg, plays the 2026 season for the Philadelphia Eagles, is not squashing this immediately a much bigger issue than anything that A.J. Brown has done related to the Philadelphia Eagles, including being frustrated that they didn't have a lot of offensive success for like a three-week time span? You would hope but not expect that the communication has happened between the team and the player and that they've told AJ Brown, look, it's a possibility that you're going to get traded. We're only going to do it if it makes sense for both of you and that he's being informed in the process.
8:06So the way they're positioning it publicly, which is very much like we'll see, is not a problem. I don't know if that's necessarily the case, but that would be how a healthy, I think, relationship would be run. Yeah. I'm not sure how much of this has been healthy. they did sign you know his buddy Elijah Moore who he was tight with in college and stayed close with and Howie Roseman said look we're only making moves for the team that make the team better it's not just about one player in terms of AJ Brown he could be on the team if they trade AJ Brown away but we'll see I think draft weekend is another touch point also after June 1st for what it's worth the cap hit gets easier for them to take The Eagles, by the way, signed Joe Tryon, who I think is dropping the show.
8:53I think it's just Joe Tryon.
8:55Patrick Claybon:The hyphen. It was it was a long game to have on the jersey. Yeah. But they keep adding these pass rushers and makes me think maybe Jonathan Garnard, who we'll get to a little later, is not getting dealt. And that one is just gone. Let's talk about Sean McVay, who had a lot of different interesting quotes to the media. I like that he's someone that's willing to give us a little something, including just volunteering the different quarterback options that are there for his team this season. Hey, I'd love to have Jimmy Garoppolo back with us. You know, that's a big deal for us. He's got the he's earned the right to be able to take his time and do whatever he wants.
9:33Patrick Claybon:Is there an opportunity to explore if it's not Jimmy? You know, the Kirk Cousins, of course, I'd love to be able to see what that looks like. So those are two guys we've talked about. I think Stetson Bennett has continued to come a long way. And you think about those things, but I do think that he's in a situation where it wouldn't shock me if he played more than one year. But we also have to be prepared that if this is the last year, what does that look like? So I think at the end, he's referring there to Matthew Stafford. If he wouldn't shock him, he's playing more than one year. He brought up this Jimmy Garoppolo line a few times, made me think Jimmy G might be retiring, but they're giving him time.
10:09or that they don't want to kind of tell the public that Jimmy G is retiring without, you know, Jimmy G revealing the news himself.
10:15Patrick Claybon:Or they've decided that Jimmy G will no longer be a quarterback on the Los Angeles Rams, which makes the follow up there because Jimmy is taking his time. Does that mean that there has been an offer that has been presented to James Richard Garoppolo to play football for the Rams? It seems like it reading between the lines of what Jordan has said on this podcast that they that they're a big fan of Jimmy. I think he was kind of first in line, but it sounds like, you know, he might have had an opportunity to go to Arizona. Didn't necessarily want that. Might not even want to come back and play football or not.
10:48And it's just interesting. Why would Sean McVay keep throwing out this Kirk Cousins thing? We're trying to make it work essentially with Kirk Cousins. I saw him do it with Mike Florio, pro football. He didn't even ask about Kirk Cousins or anything. He just went and brought it up just like, hey, and, you know, there's a guy, Kirk Cousins, who meant a lot to me in my career. That's what Sean McVay said. and you know I really love Kirk Cousins and so that could be an opportunity he has other options so we'll wait and see so Kirk Cousins has options Jimmy G's got options but Sean McVay indicated one of them will hopefully in his mind be on the roster pick up the phone Kirk your man wants you to call yeah like would you rather potentially play for the Raiders and Clint Kubiak and maybe get a week one start, but maybe not in an inferior situation?
11:36Or would you rather go get covered by the NFL network slash media employees that don't have the budget to go elsewhere for training camp like myself, but will go to the Rams and you can get an interview on NFL Daily?
11:51Patrick Claybon:I think that's where Kirk is indexing, right? It's about media markets and his ability to have access. It seems like a great situation being Matthew Safford's backup. You almost never have to play. And if you do, it's going to be, you know, it may be in a very crucial situation with this team with a great team with with Devante Adams and Puka Nakua. Speaking of which, Devante Adams, still a member of the Rams, thought it was interesting that McVay confirmed Devante Adams was brought up in trade talks. He did say, as he was kind of giving a long answer about it, that, well, they weren't that serious.
12:33But he also said that is something he felt the need to talk to Devontae Adams about. And he used the word narratives. When there's narratives out there, you want the player, in this case, Devontae Adams, to be on the same page and let them know, hey, here's what we're doing. It's all just about making the Rams better. It's never personal. I don't like when he used the word narratives, because he also confirmed that literally, you know, that he was brought up in trade talks, but he wanted to put it out there that he's happy. Devante Adams is on the Rams and that Devante is happy to be.
13:05Patrick Claybon:Yeah. And considering the scopes of things that Devante has had to deal with throughout his career and contracts and the way things have gone, I think this is probably small potatoes for Devante. I guess, but he kind of finally found like, not finally, because he had amazing years in, in green Bay, but the post, the end of the Packers run and the Raiders run, like, you know, and Jets, he was looking for, I think, stable happiness. I think he found it with the Rams and then you're getting this news. And look, I think it absolutely was connected to the A.J. Brown stuff. That would be an interesting situation, him on the Eagles, if that was the team that he was potentially going to.
13:41I mean, that's a chance to win. But at this point, it would be surprising if they make a trade there. Pukunakua, should we talk Pukunakua?
13:50Patrick Claybon:Let's talk Puka because when everything, you know, when he initially went on this, you know, weird. He's been on. Yeah. Weird is like we did talk about that when that happened. And when he went on the podcast and got in a little trouble for Aiden Ross part, you know, he's becoming part of the Manosphere. And then a week ago, he was sued for assault and battery by a woman who said he made an anti-Semitic remark and bit her on the shoulder. shoulder, the civil lawsuit is still ongoing. Although I believe in the meantime, the restraining order that was filed has been dropped. And some photos were shown of this bite and his attorney strongly denied he made any anti-Semitic statements, but he did describe the bites as horseplay, which so he did not describe the bites.
14:44The bite, it's a weird photo. I mean, it's a big bite. And Sean McVay was asked about it on Monday. And the one thing that he kind of went back to was that he believes in the person Pukunakua, that what's in his heart, he believes in that.
15:02Patrick Claybon:Well, it's time to have a conversation outside of the heart. That's not cardiology related at all about what a particular person, if you care, right, if you care about what a person believes and how that influences the way they interact with everyday life, like you are the company you keep. And he's been in this, you know, I'll say it's weird company. You know, it's a company that's aligned with a lot of the people in power in America. And I understand that. But to me, it's weird to me that it's harmful. And if you would like to have a conversation about those things, then it's time to talk to it.
15:37Patrick Claybon:Talk to those things with Puka Nakua, who at 24 years old is an adult. and you know whether it's puka whether it's your your weird grandfather or father somebody who's listening to certain things and interacting with the world in a certain way we have to provide them with autonomy and the the the kid thing we got to let go of it we we let go of it for a lot of people it's time to let go of it for puka nakua i agree the quote was you guys know i trust this kid's heart love him put your arm around and want to continue to help him grow and mcveigh did say back in December when this popped up, right before they blew what was arguably a Super Bowl losing loss there in Seattle.
16:17Just the vibes got weird. You know, that he had a conversation about the company he's keeping and making better decisions and being more mature. This latest incident was this off season. And part of the defense, it sounds like, from his attorney was just like, well, Puka was passed out. Like there's pictures of him just like passed out drunk and stuff like none of it even in the best light is is great no it's not great and the fact that
16:43Patrick Claybon:we have access to it because everything is public and there's pictures is secondary to the fact that it's it's there in the first place if you care about the thing we need to talk about the thing because how many times are we or you know it's not even a defense of somebody it's like well that's not what in their heart they're not that type of person what are they doing what you do is what type of person yeah and and if we don't have conversations about that thing then what's like quote unquote in somebody's heart or like the types of bones that are in their body. No one gives a like what, what are the things that you're actually doing?
17:14Patrick Claybon:What do you actually believe? I also find it interesting because I lack a soul. What impact this would have on his contract negotiations, which, you know, he, he's up for, they could extend him. Now Jackson Smith and Jigba just got paid. Those were the top two receivers in the league. I don't think it would prevent the Rams necessarily from paying him early, but it could. It could delay it a little bit, or it could affect that. I think it should affect that. We have much lesser things and less important things impacting other people's contract negotiations on different teams. So just something to watch.
17:54Dan Campbell spoke at the coach's breakfast and commented on a story we just hit last week on the show that I noted. I'm glad I did then on Panay Sewell moving the left tackle. And quote, Dan Campbell said, Panay Sewell, he's ready to do that. Sounds like it's happening. Panay Sewell, great left tackle in college. That's where he played in college. One of the best players in the entire NFL. Moving positions. Confirmed. That's what we know here on March 30th. Let's talk about an AFC team. Aaron Glenn talked to Judy Batista. So at these owners meetings, what you do, your coach, you're an owner, your player, the official meetings start Sunday.
18:36Okay. But you bring your wife, you bring your kids potentially, you go golfing with the other coaches. If you got some time, you get there because it's a very nice place. The free agency's over, the draft, it's a little bit of a ball. You get there Friday, maybe even Thursday. and you hang out for a couple days. And one of the advantages of being NFL media is actually on Saturday, they have you even Saturday and Sunday, but especially Saturday, some of the coaches that are willing to do it, start going through a little bit of a car wash, doing our media first, almost like getting it out of the way, doing some of the stuff that you'll see throughout the course of the entire next year.
19:15You might not see it till September, October. And this is where Judy Batista, Steve Weiss, Omar Ruiz, the best in the game, like camera, they shine, getting these one-on-ones. Here is Judy Batista, I think all the way back on Saturday, breaking some news. I saw this high in the ESPN stack on Saturday. NFL Network now. We're becoming one because they got Judy Batista's news front and center. What does it mean to have Gino back in the building? It means to have a bona fide starter come in and lead this offense to where it needs to go.
19:52Patrick Claybon:Listen, he's done it. you know, a couple of years. I mean, those years in Seattle when he was, I think, comeback player of the year. Man, he was up for MVP early in the season. There's no doubt in my mind that we brought a competent starter here in this team. I look forward to him getting in the building. So just to be clear, Geno Smith is the starting quarterback. No doubt about it. He's our guy. Good follow-up question there by Judy. That was a journey, that preamble he had. It ended with Gino just being back to a competent starter. I love, even I don't know at this point, if I would bring up like that he was in the MVP conversation at one point in Seattle.
Read the full transcript
20:31I don't remember that specifically, but he was excellent in Seattle. And that was not that long ago. I think he played very well in 2024. And so I think that's what Aaron Glenn's getting at maybe the year before. I don't remember the MVP talk. So that might be, sometimes when you're trying to make the case too strongly, you lose a little credibility. But Gino Smith is an upgrade at quarterback. Nothing else.
20:51Patrick Claybon:And, you know, I think especially when we consider those absolute score fest games between the Geno Seahawks and the Detroit Lions, the which Aaron Glenn was a part of and the way Geno played in those games. Perhaps that's what's first on mind for Coach Glenn when he thinks about Geno's performances tearing up his defense. Fair. And the rest of the quarterback depth chart right now, I'm going to put you on the spot. Oh, God, Greg. Can you remember who it is? No, I honestly can't. I know they hired Frank Reich. Yeah. You probably wouldn't have known this. They brought Bailey Zappian, so he's on the roster.
21:29He's back. But there is a man who I think will go down if he doesn't start any more NFL games. As one of the more random quarterbacks to start multiple NFL games was a rookie for the Jets last season. Undrafted player, Brady Cook. Brady Cook. Yeah. He's still there. Yeah, he's there. Oh, well, I remember Brady Cook's story. Okay, good. Yeah. Well, so of course, Gino's the starter. I mean, who else would be the starter? But I, I,
21:56Patrick Claybon:is there any leftover as a Mac Jones supporter, any leftover heat towards Bailey Zappi? Yes. Bailey Zappi did the thing that, that you hate other, that you say that we hate other quarterbacks to do. Like he buried him a little bit in the media. It's on, I think he had people in the media that were doing little shots at Mac. in the media. Come on. So he's got a media group there in Foxborough. That's also to blame. He absolutely had a media group, which was unbecoming of a man of Bailey's Zappi's talent. I mean, I wasn't happy with, I'm sorry, listeners. I thought Greg was ready to let it go. No, I wasn't happy with how drew Bledsoe way back in the day, got so much credit for being such a good guy.
22:42When there was some pretty big reporting that he was going behind Brady's back and trying to get the job back from Brady, which like, I don't kill him for, But then let's not get a ton of credit for being a good guy and supporting Brady. It's been 26 years, Greg. He's getting killed right now. That's right. There's only one person that cares about the truth. While we're on the Jets, have you noticed Mike Tannenbaum specifically? But there's been some other reporting that is tying Ty Simpson to the Jets.
23:18Patrick Claybon:that they think it would make sense yeah simpson jets and there's so much of that is they just you know we we get from judy on saturday that gino's going to be the starter right uh so that's an automatic bridge situation and there's only two quarterbacks that people are discussing right in this draft so i think a lot of that okay is is probably directly related to bear and it could be and they have four picks in the in the top 44 like it all makes sense it like as a second round type of guy. But Tannenbaum is saying 16. There's been a lot of Ty Simpson talk lately. And if you like the quarterback, because I know a lot of people dinged when Charles Davis said that Jackson Dart could go at three, ultimately to the Giants.
23:59Patrick Claybon:He's the Giants quarterback, and people are happy about having Jackson Dart in East Rutherford. I like Tannenbaum. I once ran into him at the league annual meeting, and he said he was a big around the NFL listener. So that was great. Tulane grad. I have a bit of, I don't even think it's a conspiracy theory. I'm just going to point out some facts here. Okay. Which I think should be germane to this whole Ty Simpson Jets, Mike Tannenbaum. Mike Tannenbaum was hired by the New York Jets. Not much more than a year ago, his company to go out and find the best head coach and GM candidates for the New York Jets.
24:40Okay. It was both him and Rick Spielman's company. 33rd team. Also does some content, you know? Sam Monson, shout out to them. Check the mic. The process ended with the current head coach and GM of the Jets being hired, Darren Mugi and Aaron Glenn. So I think it's okay to surmise that Mike Tannenbaum was literally involved with hiring Darren Mugi and Aaron Glenn. Not only that, his co-owner of the company was also hired by the Jets. Rick Spielman now doesn't work with Mike Tannenbaum. He now works for the Jets. Now, what does that mean when you're pointing fingers at the Ty Simpson? There could be different motivations for why Mike Tannenbaum would be sending this Ty Simpson thing out.
25:27That's up for you to decide, Patrick. But either way, I'm going to surmise, I think those things are all related.
25:33Patrick Claybon:How would it behoove the people who are on that side of the Tannenbaum circumstance who are with the Jets for him to say these things? Good question. Would it benefit them in any meaningful way? Good question. No, it wouldn't. And so maybe he knows they're not taking Ty Simpson and he's just trying to help out Ty Simpson for whatever reason. Could he be consulting for Ty Simpson right now? I mean, there's like agencies which get involved here, like the people have been connecting the dots, the CA, all that stuff. I don't want to get into all that, but... I would love to discuss. I just think it's interesting that the guy who hired the people in charge of the Jets is the one that's saying Ty Simpson could go to the Jets.
26:11whether that maybe just wants to look smart or maybe he wants it to not look as crazy when they do take Ty Simpson 16. So it's like, no, people were thinking he's a first round pick. Multiple people have been saying that like,
26:24Patrick Claybon:you know, to avoid the criticism because the, this group in, in New York, it hasn't necessarily been criticized and they need to, they need, here's the thing. People play a lot of games with the media in terms of trying to avoid criticism, especially people in that building. Yeah. that don't seem to help in any way, but it does seem like it's important to those people. Just pointing all that out. For an audience of one. You. Yeah, you're the other. No, that would be Mr. Johnson. Sure. I don't think he's listening. You never know. Let's take a break, and we're going to come back with some more news around the NFC, including the Saints.

Or a question.
30:35Patrick Claybon:I'll read them as a vain person. Okay. I'll read them and probably think about them a lot if they're negative. Another place you can consume this show is on what we call the NFL channel, the fast network, free over the air. And our producer for that program, Quab, made the huge mistake before this show that said, actually, our shows have been almost a little too short last week. They've had to pad it out with extra, you know, ads and whatnot. Don't ask us to honk too much, you know. I'll do it. I will do it. Quab says it was a huge mistake. I think, you know, it's honesty. And that's what we strive to do, which is why we're having this conversation available for everybody to hear.
31:19You're going to end up with a 75-minute show on a light news day. And yes, we are just focusing on the news here. Maybe I'll pick up the pace. Maybe not. Alvin Kamara is a man that Kellen Moore says he plans to have in his running back room. Now, that was the headline that came out of the coach's breakfast. One of the more important ones, I would say. Because, you know, they give Travis Etienne all this money. And you think, okay, it's going to be his backfield. But Kellen Moore said he's a part of the running back room. When I went to rewatch the video, however, I have noticed with Kellen Moore, I think he struggles when he put on the spot for things.
32:00I think he just might have been saying something just to say something because he didn't know how, somehow how to answer this question, even though he answered it poorly the last time around, too. That's my theory. Don't change your fantasy rankings just based off this. Sorry to cut you off.
32:13Patrick Claybon:No, it's an Al Camara is a very important player to the fans in New Orleans. And obviously that's that's going to be a touchy subject if he's going to broach that. And the breakfast may not be that that moment in time. And that's, you know, we're going to need Mickey at the microphone to have that discussion. Maybe that's what Kellen Moore. Because at one point then he said, well, this is a full offseason process. So he's certainly on the roster and part of that running back room. And I think people took that and ran with it. We'll see. We'll see. Alvin Kamara has said multiple times he would rather retire than play anywhere than New Orleans.
32:50A true saint. I thought it was interesting. This was a little clearer. Kellen Moore said that there have been conversations with Chris Olave about a potential contract extension. If you look at his numbers in the second half of last season, I mean, he was a fantasy league winner. That was Chuck chucking it, baby. Right, but Chuck's not going anywhere. That's what I'm saying. he's a really interesting contract because like, is he worth Garrett Wilson money? What do you think? I would, I would say so like 35 in the hole in a year, all that sort of stuff.
33:24Patrick Claybon:And I understand that teams can try to save money and play this. Like, well, what if he gets hurt? Literally anybody could get hurt. A little different when it's really serious concussion problems with that. The player spoke about, made him think about retirement just briefly, but you could also like have the guy in circumstances. And I recognize like everybody's got a brain. and it could happen to anybody and as things accumulate, things can get worse, but it's something at wide receiver where you could manage and you're not sending Chris Olave on missions and getting him blasted in certain things and asking him to do certain things where you can have that ownership in as well as the player to protect them.
34:00Great player that I think started playing with a renewed confidence down the stretch. He even spoke about it publicly. He was paying a little cautiously at the beginning of the season, maybe coming off of those concussions that limited him to about 400 yards in half the season the year before. And by the end of the year, yeah, the numbers week 10 on were like Jamar Chase, Justin Jefferson type numbers. They really were. They were like top three or four receiver numbers. And it really makes me feel great. I had him wide receiver one out of that draft class when he came out because I thought what he did was so obviously translatable.
34:36He could walk into the NFL and you could just throw 13 yard comebacks to him every play and move the ball down the field. And I think he would always be open and that's played out. And he's, he's added dimensions to his game. Just, I think a tricky, you know, he's a little bit of a tricky contract, I think because of the Jackson Smith and Jigba contract, and he is going to be due a lot of money. And if I was Chris, a lobby's agent, and I'm sure he, he knows this, like now's the time to get it. I don't think he's going to step on the field again until he gets a new contract.
35:06Patrick Claybon:Yeah. And that's how they exactly should proceed. Right. It's same thing with George Pickens, who, by the way, Shanahan was not, not Shanahan, Schottenheimer was asked about it for the Cowboys today. Like, do you expect George Pickens to be on the field again before you sign a graduate? He's like, no. I mean, he didn't say no. He's like, we haven't talked about that. We don't know. But also, why would he? Right. If you want him to show up, again, everybody in that asking Brian Schottenheimer questions knows the exact person to direct those questions out. And he's available. He'll answer them. the Cleveland Browns did not sign head rusher, AJ Epinesa.
35:43After all we learned over the weekend, that was supposedly going to be a one year, five year, $5 million contract. So they weren't comfortable with the physical, the medicals. So, you know, everyone that was mad at your team for the Ravens for backing out of that Max Crosby deal, they should, they should be so mad at the Browns for doing this. Right.
36:05Patrick Claybon:Everybody that was blowing up insiders phones, talking about, you know, we're not going to proceed. Yeah, I think ultimately, as you allude to with the layer of sarcasm, I think they're fine. They're fine. But how about the Browns expressing and showing caution with regards to something in a contract? Right. That's well said. A few years late. And look, if you were a conspiracy theorist, you could even think like, hey, they're there at number six, picking the draft. They're pretty deep at edge. They have Miles Garrett. We're assuming he's not going to get traded the Andrew Barry also said that you know he he will he said that the contract change uh that happened for Miles Garrett was not a precursor to a trade they're planning to have Miles Garrett as part of of the Browns and they're pretty deep at that position they signed Alex Wright uh long term and then they have another guy McGuire who's a good player and then Epinesa would have been the fourth and you're sitting there at sixth overall Reuben Bain might be there.
37:06That would be an interesting guy to put on that team. I know they have bigger needs. Everyone says, you know, wide receiver tackle for them, but that might just be the best player on the board. Or who knows? David Bailey might fall. Arvel Reese might fall. Like, who knows? So maybe they had a change of heart, just like the Ravens.
37:23Patrick Claybon:Yeah. If trading down, you know, made viable sense last year, it makes viable sense to me as well. So someone asked Andrew Barry after that Miles Garrett quote that the contract was not a precursor to a trade, which I tend to believe, even though I don't believe much there. They asked if a contract extension was possible for Deshaun Watson. Who asked that? I don't know. One of the local reporters there. And the answer was hilarious. He said, well, there's nothing that would preclude us. There's no rule that would preclude us. So we're open minded. if he had a great season, there's nothing that would stop us.
38:05That's your Browns news for the day. John Lynch got on the horn. I think he was listening to our First Dates episode last week and some of the ominous tones that were coming out of that first Mike Evans first date, if you haven't checked it out. some of our listeners are calling it the best show of the offseason, by the way. I don't know if you saw that.
38:31Patrick Claybon:And I appreciate them. I appreciate them saying so. Because it was all of us together, which is what we're looking for. John Lynch says that the substation story in which another conspiracy theory got so out there, yes, that the 49ers hired an independent scientist to study whether there was anything to the fact that the electrical substation was causing more 49ers players to be injured, despite the fact that it's been there since the 90s, by the way. He said it was a big nothing burger and that we're safe. The 49ers are safe. Do you believe them? They could have just given somebody money. They could have literally done anything other than this, and they deserve the entire first date story that you laid out there to highlight one ridiculous aspect of that.
39:25Patrick Claybon:Because they didn't immediately say, what? That's not how things work. That's not how electricity works. That's not how the human body works. But the fact that it took this long to come out and say this, like while, you know, there's all kinds of grifters, Greg. We got grifters. RFK is 12th in line to be president of the United States of America right now. And we need more people to be like, no, like, stop listening to these people who are trying to sell you bullshit. Well, here's the thing. John Lynch says we're safe. We're in a safe place of work. Thanks, John. But I'm going to do my own research.
40:01You know, I don't know if I trust this independent scientist. Why would you? Yeah. Why would you trust that one? Right. In general, when presented with scientific facts, that doesn't generally move the people off of this.
40:18Patrick Claybon:But they have increased the portfolio now of this one grifter who was behind this entire thing. And so when that guy is director of Health and Human Services in 2035, people will be able to look back and say, thanks, 49ers. It is really wild that this got so out of containment that this was one of the first questions that John Lynch, doing his media session. Thank you for the audio accompaniment. All right, let's talk about something that's not a conspiracy, which is that Trent Williams and the 49ers are in a contract negotiation. And John Lynch, who's been saying all along, he's confident a deal will get done, said progress was made over the last week and they think they're getting closer to a deal.
41:02So that's good news for the 49ers and Trent Williams. They also said George Kittle, despite that torn Achilles, could be as ready as early as week one, which sounds awfully early. Then again, Jason Tatum's like playing NFL NBA basketball right now at a pretty high level. So possible. You're shaking your head.
41:23Patrick Claybon:Yeah, it's possible, but you just want folks to be safe. And we know that there's always a disagreement between teams and their recovery timeline and the players recovery timeline. There's a notable player from the 49ers that had his guarantees voided, which is another conversation about what the hell does guarantee mean? uh it could be avoided it sounds like an incentive uh there so hopefully everybody will get the time allotted to come back and play football yeah and i and george kettle seems like one of those types of guys that you have to prevent from coming back too early so i hope i hope someone is there doing that brandon iuk is still on the roster and one of my little shots in that 49ers first date was that they were just basically holding on to iuk out of uh spite yeah and uh the the public actions are continuing that kyle shanahan said they were quote in no rush to get anything done with brandon iuk i think i think this makes them look bad depends on who you are well if you're me to us it does yeah well i don't think they're going to get anything out of it But I think when we're criticizing NFL front offices for being professional, things like that, you can certainly find fault with how Brandon Ayuk act.
42:40And we don't know the whole story of why he stayed away from the team. But from what we know, there is a lot of blame that can be assigned to him. And I'm sure the 49ers feel that way. you don't make yourself looking look any better by like trying to get it back at him for no for no good reason you're in a world where you don't think he acted professionally keeping him held hostage on the roster when you're not going to get anything for him i promise you they're not makes you look small makes you look unprofessional that's my opinion yeah
43:16Patrick Claybon:depends on like our definitions of right professional because like that there's any certain number of ways uh to go about this be the bigger person be the bigger if you if you're at like the quality sort of like you know organizations like even if you have certain feelings about how iuk acted don't why are you holding him hostage essentially in the hopes of getting like a sixth to seventh pick swap which i don't think you're gonna get because those I mean those those again those guarantees were voided relatively early on in the process right it was a torn ACL in week seven of October 2024 he had surgery that same month and then it was the next season where he's he's trying to come back doesn't ultimately work out everything transpired quickly with regards to that and so I just think they're being petty that they see that Washington is ready to sign him for like a low-cost deal, and they don't want him to just have his happy ending without like making him suffer a little bit for it in the meantime.
44:17But in the end, he's just going to end up there.
44:18Patrick Claybon:An interesting role reversal, considering Trent Williams is a current player who was like being openly conspired against by the former team in Washington, and here we are. Good call. It's time for the off-season ride-along presented by Toyota. Dave Canales, you know, now that I'm getting more into the draft, I just think these little items are interesting. He was talking about pick number 19 at the NFC coaches breakfast, and he just threw some positions out there. That was fun. Wide receiver, tight end and safety. And I think about how the strength of this draft lines up and with their need. I don't think he was lying.
44:53I think he absolutely is looking at wide receiver, tight end and safety. Because if you think about who also is going to be available there, it's a good deep wide receiver class. I think there could be some fun ones at 19. Kenyon Sadiq is the top tight end on the board. I think he would add some juice to that offense. He could be available. And then, you know, assuming Caleb Downs is gone, which you never know, safeties have fallen. There's a couple other really highly ranked safeties that could go in that area of the draft.
45:23Patrick Claybon:And considering the things that they've done in the past, this gets them to where they want to be. That's why you sign, you know, a linebacker and an edge rusher in free agency. so you could draft the players that they feel like they're good at drafting. All right. So I think they're going to draft between, like, the safeties, by the way, would be Emmanuel McNeil-Warren from Toledo. Fun player. Dylan Thienemann, who's kind of a big physical freak. Size weight. Can fly. Speed guy. And Caleb Downs, you never know, could fall to that. I don't, he shouldn't, but just people have acted weird with safeties.
45:56We saw what happened with Kyle Hamilton, with Derwin James. And so you never know. and there could be some fun wide receivers there. I think they're in a really good spot. It's a good year to be pick 19. I don't think there's that much of a difference between pick 19 and like pick 10.
46:11Patrick Claybon:Yeah, in terms of like what we know, I think it's going to reveal a whole lot. Sure, but I just think there's going to be like really good players. That was the off-season ride-along presented by Toyota. Because when people are the destination, your ride is important. Learn more at toyota.com and find the vehicle that fits your people. By the way, okay, so the breakfast is at 7.45 in the morning. Sunday night is everyone's in town by Sunday night. That's probably the night where everyone gets after it the most. Sometimes these coaches don't look so fresh early in the morning. Mike Tomlin was kind of famous for looking a little tired.
46:50Kyle Shanahan looked pretty tired today, and in general usually looks tired in these settings. But I wanted to focus on the positive. Dave Canales and Mike McDonald win my awards for the two freshest looking guys. Not only were there like biceps popping over the medium polos, you know, who above us isn't above wearing. They looked wide awake. They were not out late. So if you're a fan of the Panthers and the Seahawks, I think your coaches are all about ball. I think they're getting their good sleep in. I think they're getting an early, early weightlifting before they even go to this breakfast.
47:23And they look ready to go.
47:24Patrick Claybon:And the lifestyle is not conducive to health of an NFL coach during the season. And so if guys are out and about, if they're sleeping well, but we know at least that Dave Canales and Mike Mack are taking care of them. Or they hide it the best. You never know. They could have got up early, got some makeup, got a workout in, done all that. No judgment. They definitely didn't have makeup on, I don't think. Who would do that? No judgment, by the way. This is absolutely a time of year. You're seeing people you don't get to see the rest of the year. It's probably the lowest stress NFL work environment of the entire year on the entire calendar, even more than training camp, which is certainly fun for the coaches, but real stuff is getting done there.
48:09Certainly more than the combine or any actual game situation. Everyone's just hanging out. John Harbaugh was hanging out, and he said that he keeps in touch with Odell Beckham, which I'm kind of surprised by.
48:25Patrick Claybon:I mean, you know, the obvious pat answer would be you look at every option, right? And if Odell's an option, then we'll be looking at it for sure. And he and I do talk and we do text and we've maintained a really great relationship. He's one of my very favorite people in the world. So it's not like, you know, you don't talk to guys about things like that. And certainly we have. We'll just have to see where it all goes. You know, what's best for him? What's best for the Giants in the world? It's a bold statement. That's a big one. John Harbaugh does speak in bold proclamations. He would be a good podcaster or ESPN, like, first take guy.
49:04He always gives, like, a little extra. I feel like sometimes I'm that way, too, so I identify with it. I think you're just excited about what you're talking about, and you mean it in the moment, but then you maybe, like, go a little too far. But I think he means it. He is one of his favorite people in the world. He just has a lot of favorite people.
49:21Patrick Claybon:Yeah. And there's a lot of people in that phone. He's been coaching for a long time. And he's also coaching right now in a place where a lot of people have a lot of fond memories of Odell Beckham Jr. And it's also good to let them know that Odell is one of your favorite people. Well, who knows? Maybe Odell wants back in the league. Maybe he could like try to make that team. That might be. I think with Odell Beckham, it does feel like, you know, we're talking about this when he doesn't have that much of a chance to be on an NFL team. But I don't know. I could see a situation where the Giants, for instance, want to see what they get in the draft, and then they bring him in and see if he can make the team as their third, fourth, fifth receiver.
49:54Patrick Claybon:One of the greatest what-ifs in NFL history, the Browns make an ill-fated decision to have a clearly hurt Baker Mayfield play, underthrows a ball. Odell Beckham tries to come back and make a tackle, gets his ACL torn, tries to come back, has another ACL tear in the Super Bowl. Could have been a Canton-bound player. That is brutal. I do think about our friend Chris Wesleyan, who this podcast studio is named after, you know, believing, you know, early it's for the people that weren't there. Like he thought Odell as a rookie rookie second year was as good as any receiver that's ever entered the league.
50:29Yeah. Ever seen. He was right. He is right. And and yeah, you missed that. But he I do. I am glad even even the Rams thing hurts because like he helped them win a Super Bowl, but he had to get injured on the way to the Bengals had no.
50:43Patrick Claybon:No, no answer. To him and come. The owners have authorized hiring replacement refs. We'll get a little more details on this during the league meetings, but they are, they are taking steps. I hesitate to report or talk too much about this because it all just feels like a public negotiation. Even, even doing these, this authorization and getting it out. It all just feels like a negotiation with the refs. We'll see. They kind of wake me up when they get the deal done. Yeah, it is a negotiation. And you know, last time it took extreme action. We'll see. we'll see how far things go this time. Jonathan Grenard is a pass rusher on the Vikings.
51:18I've mentioned quite a bit as being available in a trade. Kevin O 'Connell spoke on Monday. He said he expects Jonathan Grenard to be part of the Vikings. It does feel like the trade window for Grenard might have come and gone. Mike McDonald, who I mentioned, looked wide awake, looked like he was in a good mood, was asked about what's different about being the Super Bowl champion. and he said nothing's changed. A lot of times I don't even remember that it ever happened until people like you remind me of it. I believe Mike McDonald. I do. He does seem like he's in his own. He's like, when I just go about my day, I'm just, he did go third person.
52:00I am just Mike McDonald, but I'm the same guy that I was before. I don't really remember or think about it. I believe him. Seems like that kind of guy. I wouldn't believe that for most coaches, but I do believe it for Mike McDonald.
52:10Patrick Claybon:When you're tied into the process, it's just the next thing. And, you know, unfortunately for a lot of people, you don't have time to celebrate. It's like, oh, I've accomplished all these things. What now? Well, you know, Monday. Right. For Sean McVay, like it caused him to search deep into his soul. And Jordan Roderick wrote a great piece about it. Like, now that you've reached the mountaintop, what else? Like, actually, this is, you know, I need other things to fill me. I think Mac McDonald already had done that sort of work. Like he knows what he likes to do, that the Super Bowl was nice, but like he's just going to keep doing what he likes to do.
52:46Did I mention the actual news that he said that Zach Charbonnet will play this season?
52:50Patrick Claybon:No, he didn't. But now you have and, you know, hopefully a nice path to return for Zach Charbonnet, a fellow ACL. That was one of those stories that, oh, I didn't know that was a question, but it makes sense. He tore all of his knee ligaments. And so that indicates like if Charbonnet is back, when he is back, it's not going to be early in the season. I would not expect him early. He's probably going to be on the pup list or the IR list to start the year. The Bills confirmed, Brandon Bean, that Dalton Kincaid will get his fifth year option. So that's a one-year extension on his current contract.
53:21Also, Josh Allen, who had that injury at the end of the season that he played through the foot, they said it will be 100 % for the offseason. And the Broncos said Bo Nix, by the way, will be 100 % recovered from his surgery in time for the lifting weights and the OTAs and all that stuff. So those aren't long-term injuries. I don't know if you have a Dalton Kincaid take you want to get out.
53:41Patrick Claybon:No, I don't. I should have consulted Eric for the specific Dalton Kincaid take. Cool. The Cardinals and the Browns, by the way, they spoke. They were both saying like, hey, we would take Ty Simpson. Mike LaFleur, who has been connected to Ty Simpson quite a bit, said as far as Ty Simpson visited us. And he said, I really hope, you know, I hope we get drafted by you. Like, I'd be really excited about that. When the teams talk that openly about doing it and the Browns were like, yeah, we would consider it. I usually don't believe it. Like, why would you be talking about it if you're actually going to do it?
54:18Patrick Claybon:Yeah, it's just something nice to say, right? You meet a guy. He seems cool. It's like, yeah, we draft him. And he's right. He'd love to be drafted. Let's wrap this thing up with some pro day news and just a couple other little items. uh avion terrell uh a cornerback brother of aj terrell who i i like in this draft i heard his hamstring at his pro day he said he's hamstring injury so that that could hurt his stock a little bit it's just bad timing uh i believe in the brothers um if your brother has succeeded at the exact same position and you kind of remind everyone of your brother uh that's a good sign that's a little data yeah that's good uh robert craft spoke to the local media and said that he just said what everyone assumed that the NFL owners want, but considering how important he is in the league infrastructure, he said he wants an 18 game season.
55:10He said he wants two buys per team per season, and he wants the mandatory international game for every team. I say that all to just say, like, I think this is the first time any owner has been on the record to more or less confirm what some of the insiders have either hinted at, or in the case of Mike Florio, reported at. Like, this is the structure that they want. We don't have a Super Bowl date for 2028 yet. That's very soon. They might try to renegotiate this collective bargaining agreement sooner than later. And I think this just expresses the position of what the owners want, which is two extra weeks of the regular season because you get one extra game and you get one extra buy per team.
55:57So we would be adding two weeks to the current 18 weeks. We would have a 20-week regular season. I don't know if this is going to happen, but it's possible that this could happen sooner than I think is really on people's radars.
56:09Patrick Claybon:And this surprises me because I've for a long time assumed that the two buys per team thing would be something that they would be willing to give up during the negotiation. To have an owner start there gives me a tiny bit of hope, but it's the only rational thing if you're going to add a game, because I would make the case that there could be two buys per team right now and the schedule would be fine. If you're going to add another game, which is calamity, I think health-wise, for a league where rosters are limited in the first place, that's a place you have to go. And I'm glad that somebody's willing, on that side of things, on the capital side, is willing to start.
56:51Well, it could indicate a couple things. First of all, like Kraft, you know, he's getting up there. Sometimes you just say what you, when you get it, you know, you just say what the truth is in front of a microphone instead of being careful. We've definitely noticed that with, with Jerry Jones. The other thing is look, that indicates to me maybe ownership has come around to the idea that like, yeah, an extra week of the regular season is a way to just make more money. So it's good for player safety. The players are going to want it and it's good for us too. Cause even if it dilutes the regular season week by week, it's just another week that we can sell to all the networks.
57:25So it's good for everyone. Except for you and I, potentially a little work and not that we're complaining, but you're working a little longer.
57:34Patrick Claybon:Hey, Greg, longer as long as this guy's employed. Yes. I embrace it. I embrace it. Give us all 25 weeks before we, before we go, I wanted to just say rest in peace to Joey Browner, longtime Minnesota Vikings player, a Vikings Ring of Honor member that I honestly was not like that familiar with. Big hitter, defensive back in the 80s where he did his work. Safeties don't get a lot of attention. We're at number 47. No relation to Brandon. Although related to I believe seven other NFL players, which is crazy. Brothers, sons, Max Starks is a nephew of his. He made four first-team All-Pros. He made six Pro Bowls when that really meant something.
58:26And he was on the 1980s All-Decade team. Not a guy like I knew that well, but, man, that's... I can't say I have, like, a hot take, but that's a better resume than many Hall of Famers.
58:37Patrick Claybon:Yeah, and, you know, the way that we look back, and, again, those singular games meaning so much, but to have those contributions, including, like, that NFC Championship game, as well. We're a salute and rest in peace. Yeah, rest in peace. Brandon Browner, that at 865. I always do like to kind of like circle back and learn more about these guys and was learning about him over the weekend and wanted to shout him out. Before we go, we do have the coach's breakfast picture. It's out there. It's from an angle. If you're watching us here on YouTube, I believe you can see the shot. Jim Harbaugh, does he have highlights or is the Southern California hair just done some nice work to Jim Harbaugh, who really looks lighter and happier next to his brother right in the middle and then flanked by Mike McDonald in a power move that he's just wearing a T-shirt.
59:34It's not even a polo. It's just a T-shirt showing off those guns for Mike McDonald.
59:37Patrick Claybon:Yeah, well, at a certain point, it's not showing off the guns. He just got that weaponry in there and, you know, it's tucked into the shirt. I know Cal Brandt will have a full photo breakdown on good morning football for everybody. But this is a nice looking crop of gentlemen. And one of them is going to win a Super Bowl. Yeah. And Nick Sirianni, who's won one on the far side there. Liam Cohen. I always feel like the guys who are flanking at the end and wearing sunglasses like Liam Cohen and also didn't have their coaches breakfast this morning. How close was Cohen to to Bob Sala? Yeah, so Cohen on one total end.
1:00:12Sala at almost the exact total opposite other end next to his buddy. Not all beefs have been squashed. No, I think that is a sign. They're staying as far away from each other. Great to see Mike McCarthy back in a coach's photo. Great to see the LeFleur brothers next to the Harbaugh brothers right up front. and great to see Joe Brady just way taller than everyone. I don't know if he just sits up straight, but that's a tall man, Joe Brady. Yeah, torso height is a real thing. It's an important factor. Kind of frame-mogging Michael LeFleur. I can't believe I said that publicly. We're on YouTube. Hey, young folks, Greg's all about it.
1:00:57I'm never going to say that again, and I apologize to everyone for saying that. Let's hit the music. Let's get out of here. You asked us to honk, we honk too much.
