In short

Injury and quarterback updates dominate, including Jackson Dart’s potentially season-ending knee injury and Caleb Williams’ hamstring making him week-to-week. The show also reacts to NFL power rankings (especially the Raiders and Bengals) and previews Thursday Night Football: Packers vs. Falcons, with Michael Penix returning.

Guests

Greg Rosenthal (host), Colleen Wolfe (co-host), Nick Shook (NFL.com power rankings writer; also does the Power Ranking Show with Rosenthal and Wolfe on NFL Channel). Shook is a long-time NFL analyst.

Key claims

Dart’s injury is more severe than first reported (sprained MCL initially), possibly ending his season. Harbaugh’s response suggests Baltimore’s culture is tough and resilient. Caleb Williams likely won’t practice this week; Case Keenum is a plausible fallback. Power rankings: Raiders are ranked 22 despite being 2-0 because early opponents look weak/disorganized; Bengals defense is “for real,” justifying their #3.

Notable examples

Jameis Winston 11-for-27 in the Dart-related game; Ravens’ fourth-quarter collapse; Packers’ home-opening streak; Falcons’ early offensive struggles and Penix’s “floor” improvement expectation.

2:23Welcome to NFL Daily. where we hope this show hits you like a punch to the gut. I'm Greg Rosenthal. I'm in the Chris Wesseling Podcast Studio. I'm joined every Tuesday by my friend Colleen Wolfe. But today, we have a special guest. His name is Nick Shook. You know him from NFL Daily. And the Power Ranking Show, which you two now do together on NFL Channel. Are you bonding? Yeah, we're basically becoming best friends now.

2:48Colleen Wolfe:It's great. We spend every Tuesday together. and I was so excited when I heard that Shook was moving back to LA. It's just like old times.

2:56Nick Shook:Yeah. Old times indeed. All we have left is to find a garage to do some karate in.

3:01Colleen Wolfe:You know, there's also a garage somewhere in the LA area that has all of our heights.

3:06Nick Shook:Yes.

3:07Colleen Wolfe:Wait, you did karate? You did karate?

3:10Nick Shook:Was that at Wes's? That's a two-fold thing. That's a reference to the past, but also a reference to Stepbrothers, you know? Okay. Yeah. Height measurement.

3:19Colleen Wolfe:I mean, yeah, Shook was always up top. Of course he was. I do like having Colleen with me on this show with Shook when it's just the two of us. It's a little awkward, but now it just looks like Shook and his kids. Like we're going out for the day. Who wants ice cream? I do. I love this show. We're going to hit your power rankings later. We're not happy with all of your power rankings. So that's going to be part of the show. We're going to preview Thursday night football between the Packers and the Falcons. but unfortunately we start with some bad news right off the top. And this is the reference I was mentioning when I hit the punch in the gut to open the show.

3:59Jackson Dart is possibly out for the season. When we last left you about 18 hours ago during Monday night football, it sounded like it wasn't that serious of an injury. It was reported initially as a sprained MCL. MCL. And then our insiders, including Mike Garofalo and Ian Rapoport, say that it is a more severe knee injury than expected. And he's out for an extended period of time, possibly the season. John Harbaugh was asked about it very soon after this reporting came out.

4:36Colleen Wolfe:Yeah, I get it. And they can, that's what you guys do. And that's what you should be doing and try to find out what you can find out and put it out there and get the news. You know, That's what you do, but you got to put yourself in my shoes. That's not my job. I'm not a media person. I just can't do that. It's not the right thing to do. When decisions get made and we know which direction we're going to go, then heck yeah, we'll let everybody know what they are. But until that happens, I can't breach those conversations. That's a trust that you have with people. And I don't even know all the answers.

5:10Man, that is absolutely brutal. I'm really getting tired of some of these teams like losing their quarterbacks if Dart is out for the entire season and at the very least it sounds like a long period of time it just feels like a team that we're deleting off at least at the top of my interest level they could be competitive do you feel at all bad Colleen that you jinxed them by jumping in after hating on the Giants for six or seven years

5:38Colleen Wolfe:I will not step into this lion's den because you know that I was excited and embarrassed that I was excited about the Giants because of Jackson Dart and Cam Scadaboo and John Harbaugh and how aggressive they were and out physicaling everyone. And just it seemed like the vibes were so different. And now this happens. And it's just it's such a bummer because they have been down for so long. And now it's week two and we we can't even have this. That's very big of you as an Eagles fan. And it's also disappointing for Dart personally. Anytime anyone gets hurt like this, it's obviously disappointing.

6:17But I saw it was only four quarters and a drive, like a growth from Jackson Dart. Like he was doing some of the things that you wanted to see early in this season. And so it's obviously devastating. And that's why we understand why Harbaugh was a little sensitive, I would say, in getting into his feelings somewhat when asked about it.

6:38Colleen Wolfe:A lot of football people, even Jameis last night, I think, described losing the starting quarterback as a gut punch. Can you overcome that kind of hit to your team within a week? Is that a realistic proposition to be able to overcome a loss like that this quickly? Yeah, I mean, I don't think I'm not really want to get into the hypothetical conversation about that, you know, because that's not fair. When the decision gets made, then we'll talk about that conversation. But I can tell you this. If you get punched in the gut, Ian, are you going down? Ian O 'Connor, are you going down? Are you going to crumple to the ground, as Jack Harbaugh would say, like a sack of sour apples and just fall to the ground and just rot away and wither away into the dust?

7:26Colleen Wolfe:Is that what you're going to do? Oh, no. Oh, no. I don't think so. Oh, no. That was worse than I thought I was going to. It kept getting like I was in a locker room. It kept getting worse. The worst part is the smile at the end. And I hate to bring it back to around to a long held theory that I've had about John Harbaugh, but this really supports it that he's sneaky. The scariest head coach NFL that he is such a nice guy and he handles everyone and he's really well respected. But if you've ever been around him or them or seen him at the podium, there is a low simmer of furious anger underneath that.

8:04I would be very afraid of ever getting on the wrong side of, and to make it real, Mike McDonald of the Seahawks in an interview last weekend, kind of talked about the culture in Baltimore and, and made it sound like when he was a little afraid of, and I'm afraid of John Harbaugh. I'm just going to be on.

8:20Colleen Wolfe:That's the point.

8:21Nick Shook:Yes. That's what he wants though.

8:23Colleen Wolfe:That's what John Harbaugh.

8:24Nick Shook:Yes. I've had coaches like this and they're the guys that in public, they have their arm around you. Come on, you know, Hey, you messed up. We can improve there. But when you're on the field, practice field especially and they're really mad at you they'll get he'll grab you by the face mask about an inch away from your face and he'll enter that where he just did there is are you gonna fall to the ground like a sack of sour apples in that moment you're like i'm questioning my existence right now i'm very scared ian's like no i'm fine i just asked the question i actually think you kind of misinterpreted it because i think he was talking about just bouncing back from the injury and and you know now that you have a week to prepare because they clearly didn't on monday night.

8:59They didn't respond well. Jameis Winston went 11 for 27. They just gave Jameis Winston a big contract to be one of the higher paid backup quarterbacks in the league for this scenario. And unfortunately, he didn't come through in that in that setting. Will he with a little more time to prepare? We will see.

9:18Colleen Wolfe:Well, this is like a totally different situation, too, for John Harbaugh, because the way that he built this team was supposed to be around Jackson darts, like mobility and yes, Jameis Winston can do a lot of different things, but like getting out of the pocket and running around sort of, I mean, he could get out of pressure and situations, but not like dark. No. So that's going to take away a lot of things that defenses had to worry about and defend. I used to love Jameis Winston's playing style and found it endearing and felt like there was another level he could get to. And he was under, I thought he was a little underrated, especially with Bruce Arians.

9:55It was the most common argument I had with the namesake of this studio, Chris Wesseling, me, me and him with Jameis versus Mariota. And he just hated Jameis. And it's a stupid argument to think back on. I don't know if that Jameis is still around anymore. Like when he's been on the field the last couple of years, I've, I've had my, my doubts. Like they're even, even the level that he was on with the, with the Browns and like different parts of his career. We'll see. We'll see if he's, he's still that guy. I feel like you're forgetting.

10:24Nick Shook:forgetting you're forgetting last year at that couple of moments like there was there were a couple moments where it was like hey he's making them competitive we'll see we'll see uh but yeah i mean he looked last night like he was a guy who was not prepared to have to come in and colleen you're absolutely right their identity which is that they can hit you on the ground from multiple angles is taken away and at that point they're predictable and you see what you saw last night which is let's hand it off to cam scataboo he's not really gonna have anywhere to run and

10:48Colleen Wolfe:there's no chemistry with isaiah likely with jamis not like there was with jackson dart so that's

10:54Nick Shook:also similar place for him it is but it's a similar place for John Harbaugh because he dealt with this when they lost Lamar Jackson multiple times over the last he did and I think part of the emotion there from him was almost being surprised by what he got at the press conference that he didn't know that that was necessarily coming even if they had the information behind the scenes uh he didn't know that it was necessarily out so that's one quarterback down and it's really harmful because you wanted to find out is Jackson Dart your franchise quarterback and now it kicks it another year, but he's going to be coming off an injury.

11:25It just puts the entire franchise in a tough spot. Caleb Williams' injury is not nearly as serious, thankfully. It is a hamstring strain. He is officially week to week. The fact that it's week to week and not longer term is really big after we found out on Tuesday, just before we started taping, that Tyson Bajan is in the concussion protocol. Another guy who got a contract extension because his team really believed in him as a great backup quarterback. It could be Case Keenum on Monday Night Football. Then again, when Ben Johnson spoke to the media on Monday, he was not ready to rule out Caleb Williams.

12:08Colleen Wolfe:I know everyone's going to ask about Caleb. We're saying week to week with him right now. We'll see where he's at as the week progresses and how long that means. But, you know, it's it's was somewhat encouraging the report that we got. So I'll leave it there.

12:26Nick Shook:Ben, just to clarify, will Caleb practice this week? I don't believe he will. So are you ruling him out now for week three? Are you saying that there's still a chance towards I did not do that? No. OK, that gave you a hmm. Usually I'm the guy with the hmm. So what was that hum mean? It was that smirk. He was like, hmm, I'm keeping this close to the vest. You don't know who's going to play quarterback. I'm going to make my opponent prepare for three quarterbacks. Yeah, but he then said he wasn't going to practice. So I thought when I first read the quote, okay, maybe there's an outside chance he even comes back for Monday Night Football.

13:01I hate this for Caleb Williams and the Bears fans and America because it's Monday Night Football. There is. Caleb Williams versus the Eagles, one of the best ones on the docket. And then it's such a letdown and you're thinking, okay, Tyson Bajan, he's been pretty frisky in the preseason when he's played in the regular season. At least we could have a little fun with that. And now it's Case Keenum and we're back in like 2015. And I don't like that for the Bears. I like it for your Eagles. You don't seem that disappointed.

13:32Colleen Wolfe:Listen, I'm again, why are you setting me up for these, like these injured quarterbacks to step into a bad situation? Listen, I think that the Bears would obviously have a much higher ceiling. Caleb was out there. I think, though, it's a glass half full that they aren't putting him on IR right now. Case Keenum is a capable backup if it is, if it does come down to maybe. Maybe. OK, he has last played in 2023 when he was 35. He's 38 now. Each season, they're like, should Case Keenum join the coaching staff or come back as the third quarterback? back. Don't you remember the magical run in 2017? Right.

14:12Colleen Wolfe:With the Vikings? That was nine years ago. Right. My daughter, who was in high school, was in kindergarten at that point. Preschool. But yeah, he started four games since 2019 and yeah, he hasn't played in three years, so it's hard to tell. I did happen to see him in the preseason at one point. Yeah? It wasn't that exciting.

14:32Nick Shook:Oh, whoa! How about when he diced up the Browns in the second half against third stringers? That doesn't matter. That was this year? Yes, that was it. Okay, I take it back. Antoine Randall calling plays and getting praise from Ben Johnson. That's right. This is three levels of a spectrum at quarterback for the Bears. You have Caleb Williams, dynamic, explosive, entertaining, as can be. You have Tyson Bajan, maybe athletically skilled enough to be like very, very, very, very, very poor man's version, but also maybe still do a few of the things that you want to do, especially after the snap, play action, whatever.

15:01Nick Shook:And then you have Case Keenum, who is like at this stage, pocket passer, just get the ball out on time and make the right decision. And if you have to go with that at quarterback, you're a much worse football. The problem is he was never that guy when he was good. He was kind of more like Tyson Bajan. Yes, but now he's slower. He obviously wasn't Caleb Williams, but he was a run around, and I'm just going to kind of make up some plays.

15:25Colleen Wolfe:Well, yeah, it'll be a lot of DeAndre Swift, I'm sure. Kyle Menunga. It has been a little bit of an early season test of, how good are you, Ben Johnson? Didn't go well in the rain? we'll see how it goes on Monday Night Football assuming he doesn't have Caleb Williams but hopefully he's back soon. Jaden Daniels will not be back this week so the Seahawks get a bit of a break in the schedule because they play the Commanders it will be Marcus Mariota starting but Jaden Daniels is week to week. I found it compelling that Kurt Warner said on ESPN with her friend Mina Kimes that Jaden Daniels could play through that.

16:02When using his words he said he played through it like the exact same injury did did Kurt wear a brace he did and Jaden should wear one for the rest of it we'll see yeah every injury is different obviously so who knows but maybe it's not a long-term injury either way he is out this week you did notice randomly I got a 10 p.m text I believe that Marcus Mariota has gray hair oh yeah crazy wait a second did you notice that too

Read the full transcript

16:26Colleen Wolfe:was that the first time that you noticed yes thank you because I thought I saw it wait a minute I don't want to just like come out guns blazing with this comment and then everybody's gonna be like oh come on he's had that for like five years oh like i swear i don't think i've ever seen this facts observation yes and the salt and pepper hair was just like a shock i i like it i'm not saying anything like i i'm i'm a big fan of salt and pepper it reminded me of our age i was like holy are you kidding me so yeah colleen just giving more work for the people back back behind the glass. She's changing her topics before the show.

17:01Guess what?

17:01Colleen Wolfe:I'll bring donuts next week. Ah? Okay, so Jaden Daniels officially out. Alec Pierce, the Colts wide receiver, will be out until at least mid-season, but he will not get surgery on his heel. That does not sound good. That sounds like the type of injury, for instance, that Ricky Pierce all had last year where he just kept avoiding a surgery that he eventually needed. This is the same heel that kept Alec Pierce out in the offseason. He also had surgery on it before. So just really poor news for Alec Pierce and that Colts offense, because they are just not explosive without him. They signed Darius Slayton to help replace him on the roster.

17:41Although I think, and I could be wrong, that Darius Slayton may wind up replacing Keenan Allen on the roster. Because Keenan Allen just doesn't look like Keenan Allen out there. The Chargers are a miserable team right now in terms of just the happiness quotient. They put Charlie Kolar and David Njoku on injured reserve. They also have Dalvin Tomlinson out for a while. So basically all their free agents that they've picked up over the offseason. Tyler Biotish was their center. They've all been hurt adding insult to injury. Kelvin Banks is the Saints left tackle that I just talked about last week, pointing out that he could be a future all pro.

18:19He is going to have surgery on a high ankle sprain. Have you got to the Saints tape yet? Yeah.

18:24Nick Shook:Oh, yeah, man. Oh, wait, you watched that one. I remember the play that just happened on, and I was very disappointed in the moment because of how well he was playing. Their offense is really fun to watch right now, so I hope that doesn't... Tyler Shuck can overcome adversity. He has so far. Tyler Shuck in that offense has been great.

18:39Colleen Wolfe:Tyler Shuck's knocking on the quarterback island. Uh-oh. We've had this conversation behind closed doors, and what I said was like, yeah, if Tyler Shuck plays for two more weeks, like he's played the first two weeks, then he's going to be in that conversation. Yeah. That's a big, that's, it's a big two weeks. We usually reconvene after week four. Will you, will you be back from London in time for QB Island? Okay. Yeah, probably. Okay, good. A couple other injury nugs and then we'll take a quick break. Zach Ertz is back with the Eagles. That's fun. Hey, how about that? Everything old is new again.

19:12We, we, we called that out on Sunday show that like, they're going to give Zach Ertz a call, aren't they? Cause they are so injured.

19:19Colleen Wolfe:Is he, um, 11 sits just, I think 10 or 11 catches behind Harold Carmichael for the franchise record for tight end. That's cool. Not quite as tall as Harold, but pretty productive. I love like franchise records are underrated. When I saw Dak Prescott getting emotional about passing Tony Ralph, you should be. That's like any cowboy that's ever played. Now, I saw some people that are too young that was like, is Dak Prescott the greatest cowboy of all time? Oh my God. And there was a man named Roger Staubach back in the day. I didn't watch him play, so it's tough to evaluate these things. The triplets?

19:52But when they were making lists, Troy Aikman is another important one to consider. But I think if you asked every Cowboy fan that was alive during the Roger Staubach and the Troy Aikman era, they all would say Staubach. When they were making lists in like early 80s, the greatest quarterbacks of all time, he's always in the top two or three. So just saying. We got sidetracked.

20:13Colleen Wolfe:Franchise records. Let's say goodbye after noting that the Patriots guard Michael Wenyu is to IR. I don't think he's coming back this season. It was a broken ankle and really disappointing that Will Johnson, the Cardinals defensive back, you know, really promising Michigan cornerback that got drafted early last season in the second round could miss the season with a neck injury. And you really hate those types of injuries because of what it could mean long term. So hopefully he will get healthy soon. Hopefully you guys will stick around for our next segment. Nick Shook doesn't know what's coming, but it's not going to be good for him.

20:47I can tell you that.

20:52The people have spoken and McDonald's listened. Back by popular demand, McDonald's is firing up your taste buds with the return of spicy McNuggets plus mighty hot sauce to turn up the heat. That's right. McNuggets just got hotter. You can taste it now. The crispy crunch of a McNugget coated and seasoned perfectly with aged cayenne and chili peppers and dialed up and dipped in the mighty hot sauce with a little more kick and just a touch of sweetness. You can taste it now, right? McDonald's packs plenty of flavor and spice into each bite, and that should get your attention. So grab some extra napkins, get yourself to a McDonald's now, and spice up your day with the hot combo of spicy McNuggets and mighty hot sauce.

24:38Colleen Wolfe:welcome back to rosie and the wolf we are here give us a call 844-296-WOLF KNGR here in vegas and uh we are really excited to welcome on our hotline that does not have a sponsor yet. Call us up here at Rosie and the Wolf if you want to contribute. Nick Shook, the writer of the NFL dot com power rankings. How are you doing, Nick? Fantastic. Happy to be here. Thanks for having me. Nick, we couldn't help but notice your power rankings are out. And where did you have the Raiders again? The Raiders climbed up seven spots to 22 this week. And what's their record again? And it's 2-0. 2-0 indeed, yes.

25:32Okay, so I get it. They're coming into the season. They, not a lot of expectations. Are there any 2-0 teams that are ranked and lower than this Raiders team? The answer to that is no. Why do you have so much attitude, Chuck? I'm bringing you on here. No, we want to have a good discussion because we're wondering how high to be on this Raiders team. What is it about the Raiders that has you so low on them despite going undefeated going into the season? Well, in order to climb out of the cellar,

26:08Nick Shook:sometimes you got to go rung by rung. And they started at 29 this season. And if you look at the teams that they have beaten so far this season, we can go back to week one and they beat the Dolphins. Yeah. The team that pretty much the entire football world agrees is the worst team in football. So while I give them credit for that victory, They also turned the ball over a couple of times and beat Miami by two touchdowns. Home opener. Everything's fine. And Danny Kirk cousins week two is really where they make their jump because they beat a chargers team on the road in a stadium. That was more of a home environment in a road game.

26:40Nick Shook:That was the one that was really impressive. They battled through that one. So that's why they climb. Where did you have the chargers going into the season? Where did I have the chargers going into the season? Like roughly. Roughly? Well, the chargers. Didn't you have them in the playoffs? You do some playoff predictions here. I had them at 16. So you beat a playoff team. You had them in the playoffs going into the season. You beat a playoff team by two scores on the road, and yet you're 10 spots below like an 0-2 Texans team. This is the beauty of power rankings. We only go off of what we know.

27:11Nick Shook:And what do we have through two weeks? We've seen the Chargers be one of the worst and most disorganized teams in football, and the Raiders happen to beat them, which just added to the Chargers' poor reputation at this point.

27:20Colleen Wolfe:I just, you know, Houston at 11 is 0-2. Indianapolis at 19 is 0-2. Detroit is, what, 13 and they're 1-1. Chicago's 16 at 1-1. New England is 18 at 1-1. And Vegas is 2-0 with two double-digit wins. And they are 22?

27:45Nick Shook:How much do you think Vegas believes in the Raiders right now? Like the city? or the odds maker? The fan base. I think they're in. I mean, I think they're in being better than the 22nd best team in the league. How many calls have you taken in which Raider fans in your beautiful city of Las Vegas believe that they're going to the Super Bowl?

28:08Colleen Wolfe:Oh, yeah. I mean, hey, the guy earlier at 7 a.m. said he was super high on masses. They're a fifth round rookie. They're getting contributions all over the place. Had he just walked out of a casino? He was also possibly high on meth. That feels like a bridge too far. I just look at this team. They're the lowest 0-2 team that you got. Let's compare them to, let's say, a Panthers team. You have 17. That is a team similar to the Raiders, beat up on one of the worst teams in the league. In the other game that they played, they had 59 points. I feel like at some point, you got to let go of what you thought going into the season with the Raiders.

28:51Nick Shook:Yeah, that happens usually when we hit October, and we're not yet there. And I believe more in the Panthers because of their quarterback and their weapons than I do the Raiders. But the Raiders are doing a great job. Big fan of the Raiders, folks. Okay. Don't hate me in Vegas. Weird. You came in a little confrontational. I don't like it. We do have a surprise for you. We actually are going to have a caller. It's not going to be Raiders related, but a caller is coming in, and she's got a bone to pick with you about an AFC North team.

29:20Colleen Wolfe:Yeah. Oh, here she is. We've got Touchstone. Actually, this is Gary from Norwood. Hey, boys. Who day? I just want to thank you for putting the Bengals at three, Nick Shook, because apparently you're the only person in the national media who's been to an optometrist recently. Way to use your eyes. What does Cincinnati have to do to get respect around here? 2-0, Joe Burrow, Jamar Chase, T. Higgins, and we're allowed to stop other teams now? Yeah. You know what it's like to be a Bengals fan? I spent the last decade assuming 3rd and 17 was an automatic conversion. Now I see Houston go for it on 4th and inches against Dexter Lawrence.

30:05Colleen Wolfe:Brother, that's not a play call. That's a cry for help. And I'm crying tears of joy right now because Bengals at 3 is beautiful. Print it, laminate it, hang it in Skyline, That's where it belongs. Nick, buddy, I was with you, though, until I got to five. Oh, I'm in the ranking. Baltimore at five. Did you submit these rankings before halftime on Sunday? They blew a lead to the Saints. Then I get to Pittsburgh at 26. And did you watch that offense? Three points. I accidentally scored three points last week. Aaron Rodgers behind that offensive line Has the mobility of the Brent Spence Bridge We got Pittsburgh this week though If we beat the Steelers Sunday I'm pouring Skyline all over Primanti's brothers That's the way God intended I'm not saying we're going to the Super Bowl But I'm just saying I've checked hotel prices in Los Angeles I'll hang up and listen Don't hang up Gary It's Gary It's Gary Hang on I did want you to explain just one element of your awesome rant.

31:16How did you score those three points? By mistake?

31:19Colleen Wolfe:Nobody knows. Okay. Yeah. Metaphysical. It is. It was a miracle. Three points by mistake. Answer the man. Just like Aaron Rodgers did it. Chuck, I like that he was so happy with the Bengals ranking. Answer your AFC North sorting.

31:35Nick Shook:Well, it appears that Gary has quite a leg and can kick a field goal from outside of Pacor Stadium. So congrats to Gary for that one. I would like to first give a shout out to my optometrist, Dr. Scott Hussing in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, for getting my eyes right. Because I use my eyes in these rankings. And what my eyes have told me is what somebody who happens to host the show that he's a namesake of, I think his name is Greg Rosenthal, refuses to believe, which is that the Bengals defense is for real. What show is that? I've never heard of it. I know.

32:03Colleen Wolfe:I don't know if I'm ready to trust yet. It's still growing. Oh, the guy from JRVP. Yeah, yeah. I like that guy. I don't know about this. What is it about the Ravens completely collapsing in the fourth quarter like John Harbaugh is their coach that won you over to make them top five?

32:20Nick Shook:To make the Ravens top five because I had them number three last week and they dropped a couple of spots because of the way they lost that game. But it is only one game. And through two games, the Cincinnati Bengals have shown me that their offseason additions have balanced this team out. They are no longer just an offensive team. They went into Houston and beat a Texans team that is defense first. And they held them to six points and they managed to score 20 points on big plays, which is exactly what a primetime winning team like the Cincinnati Bengals should be doing. But I do caution against Gary.

32:49Nick Shook:It was Gary, right?

32:50Colleen Wolfe:It was Gary.

32:50Nick Shook:Yes. Don't quite book those tickets yet. Just because I think back to Super Bowl 56 and running into so many Bengals fans in the elevator in a hotel in downtown Los Angeles back then. And I just don't want your heart broken like their hearts were broken that day just yet.

33:04Colleen Wolfe:This is what I'm saying. This is what it's like to be a Bengals fan. I understand. And now I'm just reliving these nightmares from the past. As an Ohio native, I get it. They would take that. In a heartbeat, I look at this Bengals team. Isn't there a part of you? And look, I don't even know. What are these power rankings, really? I mean, when we were kids. Subjective. When we were kids, we had a thing called power rankings. You open up the newspaper. It's called the NFL standings. That's what tells you. Wow. Back in your day. It's like the record. You walk up to school both ways, too? I'm just saying we didn't just make up 1-32 out of nowhere, but if I did, I would possibly consider an organization that always finds its way to maybe shoot itself in the foot and get a little overly excited, and I would see an organization that isn't necessarily protecting Joe Burrow that well through two weeks.

33:59That's a valid point.

34:00Colleen Wolfe:Also, what about the Niners? I feel like 7 is maybe conservative. They've won both games decisively. They're dominating the teams they're supposed to dominate. Their quarterback is playing out of his mind right now. Yeah. Is this still something from the preseason, like residual preseason-ness is still on them?

34:25Nick Shook:Well, it's funny, Gary, that you bring up. Oh, yeah. I hope that you were listening when we were talking Raiders. All right, let's get Gary off. We're back to having the wolf next to me. Okay. Because much like the Raiders, you do have to climb And they started at 17 and I look at their schedule and they beat a Rams team whose travel plans were much debated.

34:42Colleen Wolfe:Yes.

34:43Nick Shook:And they looked very flat in Australia. And then they went on to beat the Dolphins in week two. So I need a little bit more from the Niners, but they look great so far and they've overcome the injury. I don't know, concern or the knock on them so far, but it is early in the season. So look, I've only been around for a little while when I was reading those newspapers. I use my eyes like you're saying. I don't see how you come away saying the 49ers through two weeks for what they've looked like look any worse than the Bengals or the chiefs or the Ravens. I might have the 49ers up there at number three.

35:15We are hearing now here at Rosie and the Wolf, and this might get confusing because the Wolf's voice sounds like some of these callers. We have another caller on the line who is going to ask a question about the Browns. Hey,

35:31Colleen Wolfe:Nick, It's Mike from Parma. Lifelong Browns fan here. Browns at 23. 23? We finally win a football game, and you're racking us like we're a cracker barrel. My wife saw me smiling after the game, and she asked me if everything was okay. She just has not seen me smile in years. Houston scored six points Sunday. Six. We scored 23 and one. They're 12 spots ahead of us. explain it to me like I'm sitting in the dog pound and I've been drinking since seven because apparently losing impressively is worth more than winning in Cleveland, which honestly explains the last 25 years at least. Then there's Indianapolis, the 0-2 Colts at 19.

36:20Colleen Wolfe:Browns win 23. Colts lose 19. Nick, I'm starting to think I should start drinking again to make it make some sense. Do we get extra credit if we lose next week? Because that's apparently how these rankings are done. Okay. Green Bay at 20. Nick, they had 14 penalties and 199 yards. If the Browns did that, you would have us relegate it to the map. Oh, I just, I don't know. The Giants, they're, they're above us. Nick, they, they just lost 28 to six. What did you see in that six-point offensive explosion that screamed 21st best team in football? Cincinnati three, come on. All of a sudden, two weeks, Cincinnati's the 85 Bears?

37:04Colleen Wolfe:I don't think so. Can you hold on? I'm going to go stare at Lake Erie for a bit and think about what you've done.

37:10Nick Shook:Well, depending on the day, it might be kind of great. All right, first, I'm going to recommend one thing. Stop drinking. You're in the pierogi capital of the Midwest, so go have some pierogies in Parma.

37:18Colleen Wolfe:I do love pierogies.

37:19Nick Shook:Enjoy those. Make sure you get some cheese mixed with those potatoes inside those delicious pockets.

37:23Colleen Wolfe:I'm starving right now, Sean.

37:25Nick Shook:This is not helping at all. I am too. I'm not eating at all today. All right, let's counter a few things here. You want to mention the penalties that the Packers committed in a game they won. That's fine. Week one, the Browns committed 11 penalties for 75 yards and a blowout loss to the Jaguars in which they looked like the worst team in football. And I know it is victory now Tuesday, and you're still enjoying it. You're glowing with the satisfaction of watching your team win a game in a city in which they usually don't win many games. But I also have to caution that in order to jump from 32 up higher, you must do this for more than one week.

37:58Nick Shook:And this week, they convinced me that they have potential because their defense played well against a Baker Mayfield-led Buccaneers offense that is directionless. And they closed. They outscored them 17-3 to win that game on the road and weathered a two-hour weather delay before finishing in the final two minutes. All good things for them. but champions or teams that deserve some respect are not made overnight. And I know that in Cleveland, nothing is given. Everything is earned. As LeBron James once said, wearer of number 23, the Browns ranking other great 23s in Cleveland, Joe Hayden, Michael Brantley.

38:35Nick Shook:Should I continue? I understand your pain and I understand where you're coming from, but everything happens in due time. I mean, not overnight. Is this spot earned by the Browns? Where are you from? Shook? I happen to hail from Akron, Ohio and spend some time. How far is Parma? Because I look at the suburb of Cleveland. I look at the desirable one. I look at the Jets, you know, through two weeks, both pretty impressive performances. They don't have anything on their resume that looks at all like the Browns. You're right. Week one performance. Although that meltdown in the fourth quarter in a very winnable game against the Packers in the rain at MetLife Stadium does not shine.

39:15Nick Shook:Like a punt return. They outgained a Packers team. And they lost in overtime. A couple spots ahead of them. You know, they didn't have everyone calling for Deshaun Watson to get benched and lose by four scores in week one. Doesn't that count as much as week two? They're privileged to welcome back Geno Smith. Much like Browns fans would have liked to welcome back Baker Mayfield before last week's game.

39:37Colleen Wolfe:Mike from Parma's back from staring at the lake. and he did see Pittsburgh at 26 and thought that was excellent. You could have gone lower, but I understand.

39:48Nick Shook:And I get it. I get it, Mike, from Parma. And I would like to treat you to a celebratory bagel from Cleveland Bagel and we can go over to Edgewater Park and look out at the lake together. Okay, deal. All right. We're running out of time here on Rosie and the Wolf. Our next show, the 60 % G spot is coming up after this break. Before we get to that, I do want to ask you about the Vikings here at 15. Do you not like defense? I love defense. You not like winning?

40:22Colleen Wolfe:Mina Kimes is trying to get your attention. Hello, Mina Kimes is visiting.

40:28Nick Shook:Big fan, Mina Kimes. The Rosie and the Wolf Studios today here in Vegas. Yes. She's in town for a big convention. Globetrotter of sorts. What don't you like about an undefeated team that is absolutely scrambling back-to-back great quarterbacks to the point where everyone's questioning if they're going to be anywhere decent for the rest of the season, and yet you have them ranked below the New Orleans Saints at 1-1? You have them four spots below an 0-2 Houston Texans team? Are you just holding on to your priors? Why not value defense as an equally important side of the ball? I do value defense as an equally important side of the ball.

41:12Nick Shook:For the Vikings, it is the most important side of the ball through two weeks for them. And a lot of that is because they have to play with Carson Wentz, although they're getting Kyler Murray back this week. So they should continue to climb if they can find some balance in their performance. But Priors are involved here. They were 22 last week. Seven-spot climb is respectable when you shut down a team that scored 59 points and then in the week prior hold them to three the next week. Big win for them. But again, this is a journey. It's a marathon, not a sprint. And quarterbacks are sprinting away from Brian Flores' defense.

41:41Sounds like excuses to me.

41:43Colleen Wolfe:Should we take another call? It's not a sprint to, you know, this publication. The week three power rankings are written in stone forever. And frankly, you've disrespected these Vikings and our Raiders. That'll be it for us here on Rosie and the Wolf. Like I said, coming up, the 60 % G-Spot with Greg Rosenthal and Connie Starr. They'll be right on after the break. Rosie and the Wolf. Oh, no.

42:14Back on NFL Daily. Frankly, not sure what just happened. I don't know what you guys even heard. That was something different than NFL Daily. On NFL Daily, we previewed Thursday Night Football each and every week. was excited to find out that Michael Penix will be back in the lineup. Not thrilled overall that the Falcons are in primetime for at least the next two weeks. We'll see if NBC flexes them out of week five. But Penix would seem to make this game more interesting, watchable, a chance for the Falcons to win this game. It is a six and a half point line despite Penix's status. The Packers are favored.

42:57Let's hear from the young quarterback. Was week three always something that you kind of had targeted?

43:04Colleen Wolfe:Being healthy was what I've been targeting. It was never no week-to-week thing. It was being healthy. Whenever I felt like I can go out there, you know, like I said, you know, get out of all that soreness and get stronger. You know, each and every day, that's what it's always about. You know, so once I felt, you know, healthy, it felt like I was ready to go. That's when I pulled the trigger. might have been the Thursday night factor to can you play two games in five days and that in the team and him both decided like let's let's just wait so you're not playing on that short rest what do you expect to see out of Penix and this offense against a Packers defense it's been pretty aggressive this season I know the offense has been getting a lot of attention but Jonathan Gannon and this defense has been sending the house quite a bit at Atlanta at minimum competence

43:49Nick Shook:because they have not been a competent bunch over the first two weeks, and especially last week. We know what happened with Cooper Rush, with Jack Strand. Didn't matter. Both of them, you throw them in there, it doesn't matter. And I think that Bajon Robinson and Drake London and Kyle Pitts will be elated to have Michael Penix back in the fold. Now, do I expect him to come out and just be throwing it all over the yard like Drew Locke in week two? No, because he's still coming off of an injury. He still has to get acclimated to the speed of the game. But just the bare minimum, the floor, has to be a little bit higher than it was last week.

44:19It's higher. The concern is like, is he even the guy that they want? Like that's Kevin Stefanski wants stylistically, but either way, the floor should be higher.

44:27Colleen Wolfe:And how much can one quarterback change the offense on a like four, I mean, four day turnaround. I know that he's probably been preparing anyway for it, but I don't think that they need him to be anything. That's like spectacular. They kind of just, as you said, they just need someone who's competent and green Bay on the other side, like this is their home opener. they've won like 13 straight home openers and they're coming off that game, the overtime game against the jets. It was so ugly. And I'm really excited to watch, um, Bajon against this run defense. I want to see how, how they can kind of counter Atlanta's offense has been pretty brutal, but the running game is the silver lining for them.

45:15Colleen Wolfe:and he did well against Carolina despite the blowout loss. He rushed for over 150 yards. So that's, I think, one thing that'll be a challenge at least for Green Bay. Yeah, look, Green Bay's defense isn't that talented. They've been getting by with scheme. They also faced Carson Wentz and then they got the benefit of playing the Jets in a torrential rainstorm. There was a moment in that Falcons game against the Panthers where like back to back to back plays, it was Pitts and then London and then Bajon. And you're like, oh yeah, if we can just get these guys the ball, this team could be good. The problem that I see is like, they wanted Tua Tungvaluwa to be their quarterback.

45:55I don't think Michael Penix is the style of quarterback that Kevin Stefanski necessarily wants. Like, does he throw over the middle of the field? He tends to hold the ball a while. He goes deep down the field. That's not exactly what Stefanski has done. I think he wanted a like point and shoot point guard and two was hurt and didn't look good in the preseason. I think Matt Ryan's had an awful start to his career for Atlanta. Like some of the contracts that he gave out, how they decided to approach free agency. And then they gave a huge one to Matthew Bergeron, who is a guard on the team, paying him as one of the best guards in the league.

46:28And he's looked woeful through the first couple of weeks. So as bad as Cooper Rush has been, the pass protection hasn't given them much of a chance. And that's where Jonathan Gannon with, Hey, Lucas Van Ness having a breakout for the Packers and a kind of bigger than the sum of their parts. Devontae Wye up front, some of the linebackers, Edron Cooper rushing. Like they've actually presented some challenges as a defense on the offensive side. Like what, what do you feel about where Jordan Love, our quarterback Island baby is at right now?

47:00Colleen Wolfe:Well, I think that he has something in an advantage at any weight in his something that is. an advantage this week because AJ Terrell was placed on IR with a groin injury. So that's a significant loss, obviously, against Jordan Love and the receivers. And I just I'm guessing and assuming that Green Bay will immediately attack Atlanta secondary because if Love can't take advantage of the Falcons secondary without their top corner, then the concerns are going to become louder well it it's crazy because they're down zach back out boele they're the right tackle formerly zach tom who's probably their best offensive lineman he's not coming back anytime soon maybe at all this season aaron banks went out last week with the injury they already were starting guards who in the first week had were on their second career start and had they could not figure out what was going on against minnesota and i think just watching the games love has been fine.

48:01Sometimes you really do have to give context. I would argue even that the first game, he played pretty well until it all caved in on him at the very end. The surroundings for the vibes and the offensive line and the coaching and the structure, it is all bad right now. You do not want to be in Lambeau if this game is close. I could see it being close because at least what my eyes tell me, and I know the eyes are only so valuable. We've got the power rankings guys here. His eyes are more valuable. I don't think the Falcons defense has looked that bad this season. I know they gave up 34 points to the Panthers, but they were put in some tough spots.

48:40Colleen Wolfe:And just, I think they've been cohesive in both their games. I think they're well coached. They were well coached last year. I at least think they can like provide some opposition to an offense that's really struggling.

48:50Nick Shook:This game's going to be won by Jordan Love against this secondary. It's the best part of the Falcons defense. It's the one that's going to have to hold up to stop the Packers from scoring. and Jordan Love's going to have to go do it because they don't have a running game to speak of. And so he's going to have to lean on Christian Watson, Matthew Golden, Tucker Craft. That is how they're going to have to go win the game. And if they can hit explosives early and get this Falcons defense kind of on their heels and then force Atlanta to respond offensively, they'll win. But you're right. If it's a close game in the fourth, I'm not feeling great about it.

49:17Colleen Wolfe:I think this game though is kind of like sneaky, more interesting than it looks on paper with Atlanta. Tell it. Atlanta being 0-2, but now you have Michael Penix finally starting. Green Bay is one and one. The offense hasn't really provided a lot of like evidence in terms of their body of work, but I feel like they are getting the benefit of the doubt because they're the Packers and historically they are just a good successful franchise. They have to be so thrilled. They escaped the Jets with that. They could very easily be 0-2, but instead we talk about managing the schedule. Yes, we do. Micah Parsons is going to come back at some point this season.

49:56You would hope you get healthier on the offensive line at some point this season and those younger guys figure things out. This is maybe their easiest game the rest of the season on paper. Just find a way, get this win. Kraft and Golden and Christian Watson, they have looked good. You have better players. Just find a way to get out of here with a win one way or another. And you're 2-1, even though you've got a lot to work on. Because if it doesn't happen, I mean, the natives are restless there in Green Bay. Like Matt LaFleur is absolutely like on the hot seat. And this has been as discouraging, like a start to the season, as I can remember for them.

50:33They had lost, you know, so many straight regular seasons game. But maybe that Jets game turns it around.

50:38Colleen Wolfe:Green Bay has to prove that their offense isn't broken.

50:42Nick Shook:Yeah, I would agree with that. And I also think that this is one of those instances in which we can look back on this like three weeks from now and be like, we were totally overreacting. I agree that was a nasty weather game I agree it's really just the offensive line but they've played Flores it was a nasty weather game like can they just stabilize it I have no concerns whatsoever about Jordan Love and the skill guys catching the ball but you're right about the running backs Chuck Colleen we're taking advantage of the power rankings chemistry

51:11Colleen Wolfe:look at that get the karate going we are out of here let's go Jordan Rodriguez is going to join me for our preview show. It's a two-parter. That happens every single Wednesday. You know what doesn't happen every Wednesday? What? Patrick Claibon is joining us this week. Very lucky on one of those two shows. So we will see you then previewing each and every week three game. We will see you then.
