In short

NFL Daily reacts to the trade of Myles Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams, breaking down why it happened, who “won,” and what it means for both teams’ Super Bowl windows. The show also briefly discusses Odell Beckham Jr. signing with the New York Giants and ends with a quick AJ Brown trade-compensation update.

Guests

Nick Shook (podcast host/analyst; from Akron; covers Browns-related news and NFL strategy). Co-hosts/other voices are referenced but not clearly identified as guests in the transcript.

Key claims

  1. Rams “going for it” is the main story; they address playoff shortcomings (pass rush/secondary) by adding Garrett.
  2. Browns get a strong haul: Jared Verse (Defensive Rookie of the Year) plus a 2027 first-round pick and additional draft considerations.
  3. The trade makes sense financially and roster-wise for Cleveland’s future rebuild.

Notable examples

  • Rams’ NFC title-game loss in Seattle is cited as the motivation.
  • Comparisons: Jalen Ramsey trade, Odell Beckham acquisition, and Von Miller trade.
  • Garrett’s sack-record season and Rams’ need for more pressure/finishing on four-man rushes.

3:03Welcome to NFL Daily, where we're reacting to one of the biggest trades in NFL history live. Thanks for joining us on YouTube. Thanks to everyone checking us out in your ears. I have got the right man with me on this Monday morning on the West Coast to react to Miles Garrett's stunning trade to the Los Angeles Rams. His name is Nick Shook. He's just a kid from Akron that just happens to be the city where the Browns are right now holding a charitable golf event for the Browns Foundation, in which Andrew Barry, the GM, is literally answering questions as the report comes out from Adam Schefter, Ian Rappaport, and Tom Pellicero.

3:48The deal is Garrett to the Rams for a first-round pick in 2027, and most importantly, Jared Verse, the defensive rookie of the year from just a year ago. There are also draft pick considerations that have yet to be negotiated, so we believe that more picks will be going to the Cleveland Browns. What a stunner. We were in the middle of taping a different podcast, and this one's going to be way better. How does it feel to see your Browns trade away the all-time sack leader in a single season immediately after setting that sack record, Nick?

4:30Nick Shook:Well, I mean, I feel better prepared for this, given that we just spent 10 plus minutes talking about the possibilities of this when it happened. talk about overexposure for Andrew Barry terrible timing but a great deal I think what is the initial reaction um it makes sense for the Browns to part with Miles Garrett at this time given that their title window is nowhere near where like now and the Rams are going for it and Miles Garrett is not getting any younger uh and I think the Browns got a good haul back Jared versus one of my favorite players coming out of that draft class I'd love to watch him at Florida State he's been a monster with the Rams and uh if there's any consolation that Browns fans who are absolutely distraught over the loss of Myles Garrett.

5:07Nick Shook:If they can find any consolation, it's the fact that you have an immediate starting edge rusher who is going, he's not Myles Garrett, but he's a damn good edge rusher. Yeah, this is one of those big deals. And I'm racking my brain trying to come up with a historical precedent. And I don't think there is one quite like this, but hit us up in the comments if you can think of one. But this is a trade immediately you think, well, who won the trade? Not everyone has to win a trade. We might be talking about an A.J. Brown trade that feels very fair later this week. To me, this is a very good haul for Miles Garrett, and yet it totally makes sense for the Los Angeles Rams.

5:47Our Jordan Rodrigue, who's going to be writing a piece for The Athletic, a little teaser here, is reporting that this was in the works for weeks. Ongoing conversations between the two teams. Hope to get more information from Jordan. She's going to be joining the show on Tuesday. Ian Rappaport indicated something similar, which is that initially the Browns were saying Garrett was not available, but the Rams were persistent. And I have to imagine getting one of the best young pass rushers in the entire NFL on a cost-controlled contract has to be a big factor. And the Browns, you know, we'll be looking to extend Jared when he's eligible.

6:31but for now you got a guy that ollie connelly and i just ranked in our top 12 edge rushers in the entire nfl people thought we had him too low he could go even higher than that a very particular type of edge rusher you obviously got him much cheaper that's from the brown side i want to get into competition i want to get the money all that but i to me the biggest story other than just the stunning nature of a reigning defensive player that you're getting traded is that the rams nick Let's just talk about them going for it in a way that, you know, maybe no team has ever gone for it in our time covering the league before.

7:06I mean, they are they are winning now to the nth degree. Matthew Stafford at the very end of his career, you know, he's talked about it. And now you add Miles Garrett with guaranteed money into next year, joining forces. Just what do you think about the Rams and where this puts them overall in the NFL and especially on defense?

7:27Nick Shook:Well, the first thing I think of is how despondent Sean McVay was when they lost the NFC Championship game and how he truly felt like this was the team to win the Super Bowl and they didn't get it done. Part of why they didn't get it done is they couldn't get a stop on the road in Seattle in the NFC title game when they needed it most. How do you address that? You go and trade for Trent McDuffie. Then you go and trade future capital and a young edge rusher for an upgrade and a proven elite superstar edge rusher in Miles Garrett. Garrett, you signal to the rest of the league, we are acting with intent.

7:59Nick Shook:We believe our window is now, and we are not going to leave any stone unturned in our pursuit of a championship. But Joe, by the way, that Super Bowl played in our home stadium, the same place we won our last Super Bowl. We're going after it right now. We're going after it with all the force possible. Yeah, it's crazy because, look, Garrett is an older player entering his 30s and everything, but he is coming off his best season. And you think about their defense now. I do kind of want to just talk about like the team that they have before getting to all the draft capital and just what it means.

8:31And historically, you pair Miles Garrett with Jared versus old friend Braden Fisk, two very different types of players. You have Byron Young there, who also was drafted in our top 25 edge rusher draft just a couple of weeks ago. You have Kobe Turner as one of the best interior pass rushers, full stop in the entire NFL. and oh by the way you have one of the best run stoppers in Puna Ford who completely transformed their defense for a coordinator in Chris Shula who I think did a really good job the big question you know last year and going into the offseason was definitely in that secondary but that's where you add not only Trent McDuffie as you mentioned but Jalen Watson you get quitting late back healthy it is a crazy loaded defense it was a crazy loaded defense before you add in Myles Garrett And I don't think you should forget that, look, you're losing Jared Verse.

9:25So he is a much more dynamic, bendy pass rusher, whereas Jared Verse is a very specific type of push the pocket. I'm going to run you over. I'm tougher than you. I'm not going to necessarily win one on one all the time, but I'm going to be part of a big pass rush plan. The Rams are great at that. But now they have a guy who is going to attract attention. I mean, you've watched the Browns forever. this has to be the best defensive line that Myles Garrett's ever gotten to play with.

9:54Nick Shook:Oh, without a doubt. I mean, I would go back a few years ago when they were trying to pair him with a number of different edge rushers, usually veterans, one year to the next, who is it going to be to line up opposite him? But this is, without a doubt, the best situation overall because you're not just leaning on veterans and guys that are at or over 30 to get the job done that are proven. You're leaning on a group that is squarely in their prime and can attack you from a number of different directions. And this was a good front already, like you said, Jared versus a key part of that. But what makes it really enticing from Myles Garrett's perspective is that the way you just described it, it basically illustrates a situation in which offenses can't just dedicate a bunch of attention to Myles Garrett, because not only can they get hit by a Byron Young, not only could Braden Fisk cause problems, they can get hit from any direction.

10:37Nick Shook:So Myles Garrett is a guy who attracts double teams and chips more than anybody in the NFL. Like it's just a, it's a commonality with him. It's happened throughout the course of his career. And especially over the last three to five years, you can't do that as often as you'd like when you're facing the rest of this defense, which makes them that much better, that much more dangerous and that much more effective in the biggest moments in the post season where you expect to be. I'm telling you, man, there is nothing like the, the, the bittersweet taste of losing to your division rival with a chance to go to the Superbowl to then prompt you to go all in and say, we are not letting that happen again.

11:09Nick Shook:And that's why I think it's a great trade for both sides. And it makes all the sense in the world for the Rams to go do that right now. Wow. Yeah. Yeah, it reminds me so much, of course, of the Jalen Ramsey trade, which helped put them over the top. It reminds me somewhat of them acquiring Odell Beckham, who we'll get to very briefly at the end of this show, who's back in the NFL with the New York Giants. And when you think about it, you just think if you're a Rams fan, you just love that they go for it. And yeah, multiple things can be true. They also drafted Ty Simpson in the first round. That's, I think, still a confounding pick.

11:44This trade doesn't change that to me. I think this offense would look even better with Omar Cooper Jr. or insert wide receiver here. I would have liked Casey Concepcion. I think if you're going all in, that would have been great too. But you kind of had your cake and you're able to eat it too. And I want to give Snead and McVay credit because they always tend to do this and there's this feeling that they're going to win now. And yes, they had that quote unquote sprint rebuild where they did take a step back and it all went sour a little bit after their Super Bowl victory. But they were competitive in that sprint rebuild season.

12:19They end up making, you know, having a winning record and everything. And everyone's going to say, like, it's now or never for the Rams, but they actually are set up quite well long-term. They don't have crazy salary cap responsibilities. And if you think about it, in a way it sort of makes sense because you're paying Myles Garrett an incredible amount this year and next year. You were going to have to pay Jared Verse starting either next year or the year after that. You were going to have to pay Kobe Turner. I don't know if they would have had to choose between one of those two, but it would have been trickier to sign both of those two.

12:54Now it's like, okay, it kind of frees up. Kobe Turner's more of our long-term guy. Miles Garrett's here for the next couple of years. And it reminds me a little bit of that Von Miller trade as well, which they gave up a lot for what ended up being a half season of Von Miller, essentially, but it did get them over the line. So many of the biggest trades shook in NFL history when I was looking for comps, I'm going through it. We're literally made by Les Snead. It's like Von Miller, Matthew Stafford, like how much, you know, Jalen Ramsey, you can throw a Trent McDuffie. Now we're getting much lower on the list, but in terms of guys really at the top of like the league and they were in on the AJ Brown discussions earlier this offseason, there actually aren't that many great examples of guys who are really at the top of their level and getting traded like this unless and Sean McVay are just willing to go for it.

13:50Nick Shook:Yeah, well, what's the most important part of all of that is you have Matthew Stafford right now. You have Matthew Stafford on a contract that is going to require you to make decisions in tandem with Matthew Stafford in each of the next two offseasons. There is no tomorrow, essentially. Yeah, you drafted Ty Simpson for the future, but like if you're going to maximize what you have right now, which is a team that is very good. It was very close to making the Super Bowl. You have to do it right now, which is why you give up a younger piece on your defense for a guy that's proven, established in the peak of his career.

14:16Nick Shook:And it makes all the sense in the world. And it also, yeah, like everyone's going to say it's less need FM picks like that's what he does. But there's it makes perfect logical sense to do it right now because you have to capitalize. Right. There is no guarantee that you're ever going to have this opportunity even next year. so you gotta do it while you got it right now now you know look there's a scenario where you know the back injury Matthew Stafford yes wasn't feeling too great about happened six games into this season and it's strange but then then you have a group that's more willing you know more ready to take uh the load and help Ty Simpson here I I have seen you know I'm looking at our comments and so many of them are like angry and how are the Browns so dumb I don't think they're dumb.

15:02I think this was a good move for them. We'll get to that in a second. But I did want to just say before we move off the Rams strategy of it all, the only reason they can make this trade is because they made the first pick. Because they drafted so well. Because Byron Young is one of the most productive third round defensive linemen that have been taken in the last five years. Because Kobe Turner is one of the most productive, when was he taken? Second? Third? you know like mid-round pick he was a third round pick as well Braden Fisk is a solid second round pick the only way that they make this work is that they've been able to develop guys in their back end and that they go a little cheap on the offensive line this is not some money ball scheme where they're just outspending everyone like like the Dodgers or something like that no like everyone's playing by the same rules and they're not spending in particular way more cash than other teams they're just smart about how they're getting it done and they're now benefiting by having such an incredible asset to use an NBA term.

16:03I always hate that. I don't want to use it again. But Jared Verse on this contract is an awesome pull. I'm really curious to see what the other draft picks that they get are because a 20-20, seven late round pick, I mean, late first round pick plus Verse, like it's not a ton of draft. I don't know what the other draft picks are going to be, but like you have to expect that's a bottom five in the first round pick that the Browns get, but you also get a guy that's going to be part of your future when you hope you are ready to win some games.

16:36Nick Shook:And that's what makes it a good deal for both sides. Because, look, I can speak from the perspective of Cleveland. They are very much used to their teams trading away players at their peak when a contract is up, which is not the situation with Myles Garrett. They already paid him. But when usually a contract is up, usually the baseball team does this. And they get prospects or they get picks. They get future investments that may or may not pan out. It depends on whether the front office is going to draft well than using those picks, right? This situation is perfect because you replace, yes, Miles Garrett, who is one of one.

17:07Nick Shook:You're not going to find another Miles Garrett, but you replace him with a really good edge rusher who is young, who is on his rookie deal for two more years, could have the fifth year option, never going to get there because they're going to extend him. And you also get the capital to invest, you know, next year and whatever else capital that they get as they're finalizing the terms of this deal. So while everybody gets upset about it and understand there's, there's a lot of, you know, sports emotional trauma that comes with watching your favorite star players get rid of, you know, leave Cleveland and you have to get rid of the Jersey or put in the mothballs.

17:35Nick Shook:This works out for them. Andrew Barry couldn't have done much better. And I liked the way Ian Rappaport described it on social media, which is that he said the Browns were adamant about not trading him. Understandably so. But because the Rams were persistent and then included Jared verse, then it became a real thing because then you can continue to build toward the future. And you're not giving up a massive hole right now with nothing in return, other than picks. Taking some questions from the viewers watching right now. One asks anyone feel kind of bad for verse? Yes. While we were waiting to start this show, that was one of my immediate reactions.

18:10Nice guy. Great situation here. loves being on the Rams and he's going to a rebuilding team where look I was kind of thinking when this Miles Garrett trade smoke was popping up that you know if they traded Miles Garrett man that's one of the worst edge groups in the league and you said you said justice for Alex Wright Alex Wright's a good young player it's kind of interesting to think about Alex Wright actually getting a new contract earlier this offseason right or was it late last season. And now thinking about that, they locked him in at a pretty affordable rate. And could they have known that this was potentially coming?

18:47Maybe, but yes, it's a, it's a tough one for, for Jared Burse. I'm sorry. Sorry for the city of Cleveland, but it is tough to get traded from a potential contender. As someone who has made the LA to Cleveland move, you know, it's, it's not great. I've gone back and forth both times. look okay we're trying to get Sookie back in in a big trade that would be a big NFL daily trade

19:13Nick Shook:that we're not ready to announce it would but we're not ready to announce that yet uh look I I had this thought because we've had great weather in Cleveland this week it's sunny outside right now it's gonna be warm I thought man it's really great here when the weather's good and then I think like ah but there's that six months of the year where it's gray and cold and gross that's what Jared first is gonna have to get to know now they're gonna have a new stadium I I feel like the Andrew Barry era is, you know, verging on a Ponzi scheme that just kicks the can into the future further and further in a way to just keep his job.

19:49But I say that all like that idea with a tongue in my cheek to point out that Jared verse is going to get paid by the Browns. It would be a catastrophe if you don't get him paid. He won't have a fifth year option, so he'll be eligible for a contract after this season. It's not something that's going to happen this season, But I would imagine that's going to be a priority. You think about their young core. We love the draft class that they had a year ago with Quinchon Juggins, with Carson Schlesinger, with Harold Fannin. These are not positions that you normally pay top of the market money to, but they could be among the best players at their position.

20:30On paper, this draft looks promising. I mentioned Concepcion earlier. I really like him. You have a top 10 tackle in Spencer Fano. You are building a group with McNeil, Warren, whoever else it's going to be. You hope that Mason Graham turns into a difference maker. Probably worst case scenario, he is a solid defensive tackle for you last year. and you have the makings minus the quarterback situation of a promising young core. And that does get me thinking this just gives them another quote unquote asset with that first round pick shook to potentially maneuver to get that quarterback in next year's draft.

21:10Nick Shook:Yeah. I mean, because if you win seven games, for example, this year, you're not going to be in the running for one of these quarterbacks in this draft, which again, we do this every year but this is the class to get ready for just wait and it is actually going to be a very loaded class but yeah you're right it's the capital to move it's um positioning yourself seems generous i know they have a pretty easy schedule but it feels well no i was that was the top end i was putting them at the top end there they won five games last year and they were downright terrible for most of the year so it is possible uh but either way you're going to need to be able to maneuver in one direction uh and that's up the board if you want to get that quarterback if if what they have now doesn't work out, which it's not going to.

21:48Nick Shook:So you're positioning yourself for look, soft landing on moving on from a franchise legend and a future Hall of Famer. And you're also giving yourself the flexibility to continue to improve this roster. You're right. I mean, look, Browns fans aren't going to like the short term. Everybody wants instant gratification. I understand that. But if you actually look at this team and the way that they've kind of built, if this draft class pans out, then yeah, you make a great point that this could be, you know, the start of a turnaround for this team after a few really tough years. Yeah, I am seeing such divergent opinions, which I think indicates it's a fair trade where some analysts and Browns fans are thinking, it's amazing we got verse and this is a really good player.

22:24This is a fair deal. And other people, you know, like, why would they allow this to happen? I would much rather have Jared verse than a pick. Yes. One pick is great, but I would much rather have, especially a Rams pick. But even if you told me like it was another, maybe not the Browns, but it was another like a mid to bad pick. I would rather have Jared Verst than that, because it is harder to find great players than it is to find picks, which is why I tongue in cheek call this a Ponzi scheme. You got to be able to hit on those picks. Now, Barry did a year ago. We'll see if this draft looks as good on the field as it does on paper.

23:06We'll see if the offensive line that they put together with just all new players is going to be good enough for them to win, let's say, five or six games. There's also a scenario where they're absolutely terrible this year. And I think if you're a Browns fan, you then can at least take comfort in seeing the vision. The Rams, on the other hand, man, it's pretty rare in the NFL because it's just such a hard league to win that it's Super Bowl or bust. But look, if they lose in the NFC Championship game, Chuck, they're just going to feel like, well, why do we, you know, I'm glad we went for it, but anything short of getting there this year is going to be really disappointing.

23:51Do you see them as a significant favorite over the NFC right now?

23:57Nick Shook:I don't know if I would say significant because it's really hard to get the job done because you have to stay healthy and they're in a very tough division. They're also in a division with the reigning Super Bowl champions who did have some departures on defense, but are still good, you know, need to be taken very seriously. I will say that they will be a favorite of sorts. They will be one of the trendy picks to win the NFC. And you could probably count me among them. Now I think back to what was it? 2012, the Eagles dream team and how everybody got on board with that team. And they were not good.

24:24Nick Shook:This is not that situation. There were a lot of different factors involved. Which is funny to think back on because it was like, well, they signed Vince Young and Nnamdi Asimolat. They basically just signed Nnamdi Asimolat to a good team. Yeah, this is not that situation. I think the Rams are going to be a very good football team, provided they stay healthy. And again, you have to do this now because you get out the scenario where they fall short. They don't make the Super Bowl, right? And it's like, oh, well, now we have one less year to do it. We might only have two. So you got to get it done.

24:50Nick Shook:I think that they'll be well prepared and now they're well built to do it. Yeah, I think they are the favorites. They will be the favorites, you know, in Vegas. No question. I think with everything we know, they are the most likely team to make the Super Bowl from the NFC, and they're the most likely team to win a Super Bowl. The problem, and this is tough to explain to, for instance, my daughter, who's a Rams fan, or just in general to have this concept, that like, yeah, the favorite has maybe a 15 % to 20 % chance to win the Super Bowl. Like, yes, they're the favorite, but even just to make the Super Bowl, I am absolutely taking the field over the Rams because the field includes an Eagles team, which has a lot going for it.

25:37The field includes the Seahawks, who are the defending champions and look great. A team in San Francisco, who is very much built to win now too. And the entire freaking NFC North, who could get you on a playoff Sunday. So I would take the Rams. And yet, if you gave me, can I get two other teams? I'm probably even taking just two other teams. If you gave me the Seahawks and the 49ers or the Seahawks and the Eagles, I'm probably taking those two teams even. But that's the business that we're in. And the point is to have a parade, and the Rams are going for that. And I think that's all you can ask for.

26:17Nick Shook:Yeah, it is. Actually, I was thinking about what teams would I take over the Rams. And I would throw the Cowboys in there as one of the teams I might take, just because I think they're going to have a bit of a resurgence here. If you're taking two teams, you're saying? or three teams? Yes, I'm taking two teams, not just the Cowboys. I'm taking two or three teams, not quite the full field, but I would throw the Cowboys in there because that's how hard it is to get it done. It's as simple as that. I mean, they were our favorite to make the Super Bowl basically until they lost that game in Seattle last year.

26:42Nick Shook:And even then, it was really hard to not lean toward them as the team you expected to make the Super Bowl. So yeah, it's, look, it's tough to win this league, but again, they are stocking themselves as best as possible to get it done. Andrew Barry has had one of the most surprising glow-ups in terms of public perception over the last year of any maligned executive, I can think so. I can think of. I don't forgive him for everything he did. All the dead cap that they have on their salary this year that we talked about in the episode that will never be heard, shook. I would love to parse out the moment we found out about this trade, though.

27:23Nick Shook:It's just like, oh my God. We're 15 minutes into an episode where we already spent about 10 on Miles Garrett because it started to feel like this thing was potentially real and we just wanted to speculate. But yeah, it's a team that is okay giving up the cap hit that they have in terms of dead cap in terms of this trade. If you wanted to explain, let's break this down. We haven't done this yet. Miles Garrett is due a fully guaranteed salary this year. Most of his salary, I believe$29 or$30 million next year of his$41 million is guaranteed very early. So ultimately, that's going to be guaranteed.

28:04He's making$41 million next year. So if you're the Rams and you're curious, you're a fan or just wondering, you're a Seahawks fan who wants this all to end as quickly as possible, it's probably a minimum two-year deal for Miles Garrett. in LA and we'll see like he has to be playing at a high level to continue on after that for the Browns they constructed this contract for 30 year old Miles Garrett at the time Miles Garrett who said from Cleveland to Canton you know after he he signed that deal uh turned out it's going to be Cleveland to Inglewood um he ends up getting one year and that the trade doesn't really hit them too hard in terms of a cap hit.

28:46So I believe they have$26 million in dead cap that will be split over two seasons. For what the Browns have eaten in terms of dead cap, you did the math where it's over$40 plus million in offensive linemen this year alone in that dead cap. Players that are not Miles Garrett, Joel Batonio, Wyatt Teller, like guys who even finished the end of their contract but they had to like move money around because deshaun watson's contract is so onerous and by the way they'll be taking some dead cat cap on that when he is finally no longer a void years baby oh my god void years like it is actually not much of a hit and they actually save cap space this year if you really care about that and you get you save a ton of cap space next year because that salary is not there it will you know create you know a situation for the rams where we'll have to make some decisions but like i said it's almost like replacing miles garrett next year with giving of jared verse long-term contract next year so from a financial side of it it kind of

29:48Nick Shook:makes sense for the browns yeah it does uh you get an affordable player uh you don't have the worst cap hit and moving on from miles garrett and again you get the asset you get the i use the term now to asset first round pick not player but first round pick next year and whatever draft consideration you get as well. Look, man, I think we're actually in a weird era in which we've seen a healthy amount of trades that were pretty even in the last year or so. This one, I think, is going to, years from now, look pretty even, even in hindsight. Okay. I think, look, there's a lot of pressure on Myles Garrett now to stay at this level.

30:26There's every reason to believe that he will because he's coming off one of his best seasons. You know, he didn't have, his pressure to sack ratio was absolutely insane. Actual total pressures were down slightly. Then again, he's forcing a fumble on rundowns like every other play it felt like, like he's as good a run defender as he's ever been in his career. He is absolutely one of one. You know, I ranked the best 25 players in the last 25 years, and Myles Garrett is steadily moving up that list. I think he's going to be in the top 10 soon, but he's got to perform at an extraordinarily high level to make this worth it.

31:04Shook, I believe that he will. And the difference, I think it comes to a stat that I see from Hayden Winks from Underdog, who notes that the sack percentage and kind of EPA per drop back for the Rams defense, Nick, last year on just regular four-man rushes was very average. It wasn't bad, but it was average. When they weren't sending extra rushers, they were a team that pressured well. They were a team that weren't horrible. But in the end, they were a little disappointing if they didn't send extra heat. They were kind of an average defense because they did not have a great secondary. Yep. And they didn't get home fast enough.

31:48Versus is a guy, and Byron Young's not really like this as much. But, you know, they had a group of guys who would create pressure but not finish the play. Garrett can finish the play.

31:57Nick Shook:He can definitely finish the play. And I have to give a lot of credit to Les Snead for acknowledging their weaknesses, their deficiencies by first addressing the secondary. And then this is like the cherry on top. Like, yeah, we're going to get better on the back end, provided we can stay healthy throughout the season. But we're also going to not just run back what we had before. We're going to upgrade there too, just to make sure that there are no crevices and chances that we can get exposed like we did in the playoffs, because that's when it matters most. And I'm very excited to see exactly how productive this team can be.

32:24Nick Shook:Again, you wish, you know, good health for every player. And that's going to be their, their biggest challenge, I think. But I would really love to see what Chris Shula is going to do with miles Gary and this defense. Cause like the Browns under Jim Schwartz, they like to move miles around. Sometimes they'd move them to the interior. Sometimes they'd take his hand out of the dirt and just try to create mismatches to where you couldn't dedicate extra blockers to him. Are the Rams going to do something similar? Are they going to keep them more in a, in a traditional place and trust the strength of the defense as a whole?

32:51Nick Shook:Because now front to back, it's a very strong defense. It's crazy. I mean, I'm still sort of wrapping my mind around that they really did this. And I'm thinking of like different winners and losers. Yeah, Chris Shula's a big winner. Obviously, there's a pep in the step of really anyone associated with the Los Angeles Rams today, including Sean McVay. But you know who's a sneaky winner? Who? You know who first had this like in print in terms of like online? Do you remember the name that I told you earlier? No, I have the notes in front of me, so I'm cheating on the test. Easton Butler from 24-7 Packers.

33:31Easton Butler tweeted about this. He covers the Packers for 24-7 Packers, like Packers Update, I believe it's called. He tweeted last night that he heard the Rams had offered a Ricky Williams-like godfather offer for Garrett and that this thing could be happening. Didn't really get picked up. everywhere and i'm not sure it's a ricky williams like offer it's not frankly maybe there was another rams offer though and i and i'll be interested to hear from jordan the process of how this trade went down wouldn't surprise me if we heard that there was a extremely pick heavy offer again and again from the rams and when we when ian rapaport says that they were persistent that eventually some of those picks turned into Jared Verse.

34:20And then that was the moment that the Browns were like, okay. Because shout out to Easton Butler. He got the general ballpark of it right. And even ESPN Radio said earlier this morning in Cleveland that they heard the deal was actually done, a rumor. And it sounds like they were right.

34:37Nick Shook:Now, if only I can engineer the reverse LA to Cleveland move and ESPN Radio Cleveland taking the callers from a random bakery If that can come through and a certain basketball player can come back to Cleveland, that would be that would be cool. Oh, yeah. Plus, we're working on another deal out here for the city of Los Angeles, just for around the NFL lovers. We're trying to acquire Lakeisha Wesleyan back on the West Coast. We'll see if we can we can complete that deal. But we're trying to bring her back reeling her from the Midwest as well. I, you know, part of me wants to just finish the show on Miles Garrett, but Odell Beckham's back in the league. Let's at least spend a couple minutes on Odell Beckham is with the Giants. That's cool.

38:53Nick Shook:That's cool. I was going to say not only back in the league, back where he started his career. It's just a, it's a homecoming. It's a situation in which Odell has finally found an opportunity to play football again with a team that could use him at receiver. You know, you got to wonder about the health of Malik Neighbors who suffered an injury last year. You need depth of the position. You lost Wondell Robinson in the offseason. They also signed Braxton Berrios. They are attacking the position with, with aggression, understandable aggression. I would love it. As somebody you got to know Odell in Cleveland, I would love it if his final chapter is going back to New York and being productive and helping them win games and start this turnaround that they've been trying to initiate for the last few years.

39:37Nick Shook:And then he rides off into the sunset with a reputation that is rehabilitated in the Big Apple. And everybody just says, we love you, Odell. Thanks for coming back and helping us out. Yeah, what's the best case scenario here? It's that, yeah, he helps out that young receiver group or really the one young receiver specifically in Malik Neighbors. And it's just nice. He gets some big ovations. He makes a few big catches. But let's be real. He's a 34-year-old receiver who was not in the NFL last year, partly because he hasn't been healthy, but partly because he just wasn't productive the last time we saw him.

40:11He played nine games for the Miami Dolphins two seasons ago. I don't think people really remember that. And he had nine catches for like 55 yards, wasn't moving the same. So he has no lock to make the team, but it is a cool story. And if he does make the team and John Harbaugh has a good relationship with him because he worked with him in Baltimore. And so that's a great sign that John Harbaugh believes in him. If he's there just as a role player, I've seen some, you know, haters out there being like, why are they using like a big graphic and making this out to be a big deal? Like he's a fourth, fifth receiver.

40:47This is one of the most famous football players of the last 25 years.

40:53Nick Shook:Yeah. You look disgusting. Can we not have fun? It's June 1st. It's Odell Beckham Jr. He drives clicks. He drives headlines. He is a name that everybody knows. People who don't know anything about football know who Odell is. Give him some time in the spotlight. It's good for marketing. But here's what he also is, Chuck. one of the greatest receivers early in his career that we've seen enter the league this century, full stop. Reception Perception is a site that Matt Harmon, our friend, runs where he logs every single route that a receiver takes, period. Who has the number one overall score in terms of getting open against man coverage in the history of his site in a single season?

41:40It's Odell freaking Beckham. who has two of the top four scores. It wasn't just one season of any season of any receiver getting open. This, when he came into the league, you know, I just can hear Chris Wessling's voice in my head so clearly. And we talked about it a lot on our old Around the NFL podcast that like, he is as good coming into the league as just about anyone that we had seen. Obviously injuries took him out, but he made that noise with the New York Giants. So of course we're going to be sentimental. And it's of course a big deal when a great, and he was a great for just a shorter time than you would have wanted for the New York Giants, rejoins his own team.

42:19It'll be fun. The catch. The catch.

42:21Nick Shook:That catch that everybody knows and that Madden put it in an animation and every third long downfield catch was Odell's catch again. That's how transformative it was. That happened at MetLife Stadium with Odell in a Giants uniform. Appreciate the history and the connection here, guys. that said if i wanted to be a jerk about this if you're watching us on on youtube again thanks to everyone joining us in the comments and everything you know they assigned two receivers they also signed braxton barrios and if you were forcing me to guess who is more likely to make the nfl roster this year probably braxton barrios you need you need returner help that's you just need a returner he's a special teams guy it's a one-to-one comp for gunner olshevsky not a name probably a lot of people are familiar with, but a very good return special teamer guy who unfortunately tore his ACL just last week.

43:16And it actually kind of made me laugh that the Giants signed Braxton Berrios first, the head of Odell, and he used the pick to take over for Oshesky because they're both similar undersized slot receivers that were initially with the New England Patriots. So it was just kind of like, oh, let's check off our last former Patriots undersized slot guy worked out well for us with Olszewski. Let's just sign.

43:40Nick Shook:And now we can go shopping. Odell, you come up. It's your turn now. You come sign a contract. Yes. Look, it's June 1st. This was the day we were waiting for Shook as we wrap up to arrive. Because what was it supposed to be? It was supposed to be A.J. Brown Day. Right. The show that nobody's ever going to hear, we started with A.J. Brown. Right. I've got news. I've got Abdul Carter talking about Jack's dart. I've got Michael Awenwu taking a pay cut. I feel like all that's beside the point. We might hit that on a news rundown later in the week. But when it comes to A.J. Brown, yes, June 1st was the day for people who are unfamiliar with how the contracts work in the NFL, where you kind of kick forward some of the contract penalties.

44:29is after June 1st, you can spread the money for any dead cap hit in terms of a trade over the next two years, 26 and 27. If you had done it before June 1st, you couldn't have done that. You would have to take a big cap hit. The Eagles would have to take a bigger cap hit if they had traded A.J. Brown before June 1st. As we're taping this, we're actually an hour and a half away from that magical hour. But as we saw with Miles Garrett, you can still have a report. You can have an agreement before that. We don't have any agreement yet for A.J. Brown. I'd love it if it happens, let's say, tomorrow morning before Jordan and I get on the horn and we talk about A.J.

45:10Brown, we talk about the aftermath of Miles Garrett.

45:11Nick Shook:You mean to tell me you don't want to just do this again? That's true. We could just pop back on today. I don't know if Eric Roberts, our producer, would totally approve of that, but I would. The one thing that moved it forward today in terms of A.J. Brown was a report from Jeff McLean of the Philadelphia Inquirer that believes a 2028 first round pick is going to be the compensation from the Patriots. What do you think about that compensation? Yeah, my initial reaction was a bit of a punch to the gut there because I would I would like it to be a first round in the upcoming draft. Just it feels a little devalued when it's two years out.

45:47Nick Shook:But if you're I mean, if you're really projecting what that pick is going to be, you expect the Patriots to be a competitive team. They did just make the Super Bowl. And so regardless of whether it's this year or the next, it's not going to be a high first round pick. It's still good value that you're going to get a first round pick from AJ Brown because Howie Roseman has almost no leverage. We've expected this to happen for months. We knew that they were going to divorce, that their time together was through. Jalen Hurts talked about him in the past tense last week. And so, yeah, this is about the best you can get.

46:18Nick Shook:I always, of course, I have a high valuation on AJ Brown just because of what he's done with the Eagles and what I still think he can do in the right offensive situation that is not the dysfunctional mess that has been the Eagles over the last three to four years but we are operating you know with different market forces in play including the fact that again how he can't really necessarily drive up the leverage unless another team wants to get involved and I feel like at this point they just want to get it done and move on already I think it's good they get in the first round pick that's pretty good yeah yeah I Who are they fighting against?

46:48Nick Shook:In a vacuum, I would like more than one first rounder. But then again, I think we also are in an area. This is hard to say this as soon as the Browns got a 27 first and Jared verse for Myles Garrett. But I think we often, when we look at star players in trade talks, we overvalue them comparative to draft compensation. And I think I'm still stuck in that, especially after what happened with Myles Garrett. It's not the age of a round that they traded for from the Titans because he's coming off a season that was injury marred early in the season. He looked quite good down the stretch and was very productive down the stretch.

47:22So I think that really helped his trade value. But he's getting up there, and he's not Myles Garrett. Myles Garrett's a generational player coming off of a record-breaking season. AJ Brown is not that. He is a really good number one receiver. As someone who pays his full credit card bill each and every month, doesn't like the debt. It just doesn't make sense to me. It's like that 2028 first. I mean, it's basically just as valuable other than the fact that, you know, we all might not be here in 2028 because AI is taken over by then or there's some massive, you know, weather emergency. Howie Roseman, if he wants a job, is running the Eagles.

48:05That first round pick is basically just as valuable to me as a 2027 first. I think that's pretty good. I think it's a fair trade for me.

48:11Nick Shook:It's fair. I mean, again, you can't drive up the price on a guy that you have no leverage on anymore. It's as simple as that. Unless another team wants to get involved. You know, the business is still open after four. Chiefs, you want to make a phone call, huh? We have a question asking, now that Miles Garrett was traded, the Rams must be out on A.J. Brown. Yes. The Rams were out on A.J. Brown the minute that that report got out there and that they had a conversation with Devontae Adams explaining to him that, hey man, sorry we were going to possibly trade you and bring in A.J. Brown, but now his salary is locked in and that ship had sailed.

48:56From everything we knew, they were then out at A.J. Brown at that point. Here's a question for you, Shook, and I don't know if you can do this right now to wrap up our show. Is trading for Miles Garrett a boost for the Rams? like when you play the dumpster trumpet on your twitch channel explain for the listeners what

49:13Nick Shook:that means okay so in moments in which you need to drive up the energy on my twitch channel when we're usually playing college football 26 i have a clip that i found on social media of a guy playing a trumpet into a dumpster and it's the trumpet to harden the paint by walk a flock of flame and it's just it's very loud it's it drives up the energy come on get out of your seats let's go we need some energy here so yes it is a boost for the rams like the dumpster trumpet and the dumpster trumpet never fails to deliver much like miles garrett never fails to deliver how about a boost for us shookie i went through the history of the nfl and i want you to get that trumpet ready is it potentially ready we can't surface it here now come on bro that would be a great way to end the show i would if i had control over this but i don't i'm feel i'm feeling this in my in my soul that it's just in the background right now i don't think there's ever been a trade like this Like Eric Dickerson was traded in the middle of a season.

50:08Again, the Rams involved. This time it's going the other direction where he was the leading rusher in the league the year before. And at a time when running backs were pretty much the biggest superstars in the NFL when they traded him to Indianapolis. And then he was the leading rusher in the league the year after. But that was in the middle of a season. Like draft picks are involved. In general, when you think about moves like this, Joe Montana was traded, one of the greatest players of all time. We didn't know what he was going to be like on the Chiefs, but he was not coming off his all-time best season.

50:44Again, it's just like picks. This time, it's for a younger player at the position. He's coming off his biggest season. I don't think there's ever been a trade like this in NFL history.

50:57Nick Shook:It's a Madden trade, I think. It's the type of trade that you don't want to extend your guy and you're in Madden and you go find a younger, comparable guy with a superstar development and you go get it done. But you know what? It's not. It's not the Madden trade from the irresponsible 11 year old who's just trading away future picks and willy nilly because he knows he's never even going to get to 28, 29. I think these make sense for both teams, for the Cleveland Browns, for the Rams. I don't think they're mortgaging their future. And as we wrap up, we actually get the update. Thank you to Ian Rappaport, who gives us the final details of the trade.

51:37It is officially Jared Verse, a 2027 first round pick. And here's where it gets interesting. The remaining picks for your Browns. you also get a 2028 second round pick and a 2029 third round pick. You will be reaping the rewards of this Miles Garrett trade into 2029. Who knows what's happening in the world then? We might have updated, you know, you might have hair by then, Shook.

52:09Nick Shook:Be still my beating heart. This is the best possible package realistically that you could get. it's a victory for Andrew Berry and it's a victory for Les Snead. I love it when things work out for both sides. Yeah, we spent the day not knowing what those other picks will be. I got to be honest. If you had asked me to guess what the other picks would be, I would have guessed the second round pick would have been involved. And so a second and a third and the third is further out isn't that much more than that. But ultimately, like if I'm a Browns fan and I see it was 28, you know the 27 first plus I think this is really good I think you're getting four players for Miles Garrett one of them is awesome and he is hopefully going to be part of your organization for longer than Miles Garrett is part of the Rams organization and then you get three you know lottery tickets they're not high lottery tickets it's a late first most likely and it's a second or in the third but that's how you continue to build up the Browns.

53:12I like it for both sides. I don't, I don't think it reflects poorly on the Rams that they gave up more, but I think it just confirms the fact that it totally made sense for a team in the Browns who had a guy who, by the way, didn't exactly want to be there.

53:27Nick Shook:Yep. And, and you know what? It was a great way to tie a bow on this live show that we did not expect to do today. And now that's weird. I'm not going to lie. That visual is still going to take some time to get used to. Miles Garrett in royal blue and soul, the name for the gold that the Rams wear. But that is our future now, folks. Life changes quickly. If you thought that you saw a lot of the Miles Garrett, Chloe Kim credit card commercial that is playing literally every break, if you happen to be watching the French Open on HBO Max, shout out to Adam Lefkoe and the coverage there. Great job.

54:02But Miles Garrett's going to be an even bigger star. He's getting all the promotion for this season, all the advertisements. It's everything that he ever wanted. And frankly, I think everything the NFL wants. And for Browns fans out there, yes, I think you've got to be pretty happy with what you got. You've got that magical moment with Andrew Siciliano calling that sack. Pretty amazing to think about. The final six minutes of Miles Garrett's career in Cleveland.
