In short

NFL Daily’s NFC West preview, preceded by training-camp injury/news updates and contract reporting, then a “12 minutes per team” segment starting with the Cardinals and continuing into Rams discussion.

Guests

Greg Rosenthal (host). Chris Wessling Podcast Studio. Jordan Roderick (reporter/insider; confirms Jacoby Brissett deal). Jordan Roderick speaks on Brissett’s contract terms and incentives.

Key claims

  • 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan is recovering from a severe July 14 car accident (concussion, broken nose/hand, three broken ribs; 40+ stitches). Chris Forster and Raheem Morris are covering head-coach duties; Shanahan is expected to coach by Week 1.
  • Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes is back at camp, saying he feels “stronger than ever,” focusing on pocket movement; Mansour Delane is returning from shoulder surgery; Eric Bieniemy leaves camp after his son is charged in a shooting involving Bieniemy’s wife.
  • Ravens DT Nnamdi Madubuike cleared to return (PUP).
  • Cardinals: Joy is skill-position talent (Jeremiah Love, Trey McBride, Michael Wilson, plus Marvin Harrison Jr. “maybe”); scheme optimism centers on Mike LaFleur and tight-end-heavy 11/13 personnel concepts.
  • Rams: Joy is “super team” primetime buzz; key non-QB focus is QB coach Dave Ragone preparing Ty Simpson/backup behind Matthew Stafford; depth concerns drive “what if it doesn’t work” worries.

Notable examples

  • Brissett deal: $15.5M base, incentives up to about $21M; incentives tied to starter status/snaps.
  • Cardinals injury context: team heavily impacted by injuries last year; schedule described as brutal (e.g., early games vs Chargers/Seahawks/49ers).
  • Rams scheme example: McVay translating 11-personnel concepts into heavy 13 personnel with multiple tight ends.

2:09Welcome to NFL Daily. I think we can just say it. Football is back. I'm Greg Rosenthal in the Chris Wessling Podcast Studio. Late July. Six teams already in training camp and practicing. Wow. Fully. Not with pads, but six teams practicing. The rest of the NFL reports on Tuesday. It's all happening. Jordan Roderick.

2:34Jourdan Rodrigue:I'm so excited. We're here. We are here. Long summer. Hope everyone, you know, enjoyed their break. If you weren't listening to NFL Daily, who are you? No, actually everyone was listening to NFL Daily by the numbers, so we appreciate all you. We're going to continue our division previews, which I'm excited to keep rolling. Staying in the West, we're going to do the NFC West with the two teams that are at the top probably of everyone's power rankings. My favorite division. It's a great division. But first we're going to do a little bit of news. And we have to start with Kyle Shanahan. This was surprising news that came up over the weekend that he was seriously hurt in a car accident.

3:19Let's start, I guess, with the good news, which is that he was healthy enough to attend the 49ers practice that occurred on Sunday. That was their first practice. He came after the media taping session. So there wasn't video of it or anything, but he was there for 30 minutes talking. He's not doing all of his responsibilities right now as the head coach. He suffered a severe concussion. The injuries occurred on July 14th, so it was a little while back. He needed more than 40 stitches. He had a broken nose, a broken hand, three broken ribs, and assistant head coach Chris Forster, along with Raheem Morris on the other side of the ball, are handling the head coach responsibilities.

4:03It sounds like no one's really going to be addressing the entire team. They're just dividing into offense, defense, and special teams. But the important thing here, as John Lynch, the GM, pointed out, was that Kyle Shannon is on his road to recovery. They expect him to be good enough to coach the team and go to Australia in week one, and that the other party that was in this accident is also okay.

4:27Jourdan Rodrigue:Yeah, I was listening and sort of had one eye on Chris Sims the morning that we're recording this over on Pro Football Talk. It's called Monday. Well, yeah, but maybe the listeners listening on Tuesday. I don't know. I don't know. I don't judge. Still would be Monday. I don't judge what people's schedules are. Okay, fair. So he was talking, you know, Chris Sims and Kyle Shanahan, our best friends, are really, really close, have been for decades. Famously have tattoos of each other on their own bodies. Famously have matching tattoos, yeah. And was talking about how he knew, had known about this and the severity of it was getting pictures from, you know, Kyle Shanahan's wife and the family after the accident happened.

5:07Jourdan Rodrigue:And that in Chris Sims's words, Kyle Shanahan came really close to losing his right eye. And those stitches, the 40 stitches you mentioned, stitches in his face. So for me, that's it's really, really scary, serious. And thinking about that and obviously glad everybody is overall going to be OK in this situation. But scary stuff. And there was some conversation. How come this didn't come out for a couple of weeks? There was no criminal activity that we would have seen. And not everything is a huge conspiracy. That said, if it was Brock Purdy who got in a big accident like two weeks ago, I feel like he might not have received the same consideration that Kyle Shanahan did.

5:47But the ultimate thing here is that Kyle Shanahan is getting better. And, you know, it's almost something I just want to get to. Like the Jordan James is getting backup running back reps at the 49ers practice. That's exciting. That's more exciting than me, but it's great to hear that.

6:02Jourdan Rodrigue:On the first day of 49ers practice, Greg, let's calm down. That's why I have a separate document. He's already so fired up. That's camp notes. And I have learned over the years, you've got to wait for them to pile up for a bunch of days until, you know, what matters, what doesn't. So that'll be coming later this week with Shooky. The Chiefs have been back at practice for a few days here. At least there are rookies and injured players, which include Patrick Mahomes. So since we last taped Patrick Mahomes or Shee Rice, both fully cleared to start camp. At this point, they're not doing 11 and 11s because they don't have enough people out there.

6:38So we don't know if Patrick Mahomes is going to do every single aspect of camp. They're obviously not practicing with pads. They have to practice for four days before that happens. But he is out there. Let's listen to Mahomes back at the podium looking slender.

6:53Jourdan Rodrigue:I feel stronger than I've ever felt as far as strength and lifting and stuff like that. And so now it's just about getting that quarterback stuff down, that stuff moving in the pocket quick, making those quick movements, reacting and doing stuff like that. I'm a competitor, so game day I'm going to want to be out there. But I understand the process of getting myself ready to play in the regular season is more important. But we will see. I mean, the coaches and docs will kind of make that decision for me, but I'll prepare myself like I'm going to play. And then if I'm just doing a very hard warm-up, I will take that as serious as playing in the preseason game.

7:28Patrick Mahomes plays in the preseason more than virtually any starting quarterback. It's just how the Chiefs do things. They also practice with pads on and contact more than just about any team out there. It's just how they've done things, and it works for them. So we might not see him in the preseason, but the fact that he's talking about getting ready to play shows he's further along than I would have expected. And I got to say, I don't know if it's the...

7:52Jourdan Rodrigue:He looks leaner. The fade or the fit or what? But it does kind of look like Patrick Mahomes in this recovery and this rough season that they had last year. It's like he's in the best shape of his life. That's what he looks like. He looks leaner to me. And I think that's important when you're thinking about you're coming back from an injury where you don't want to put, you know, an excess amount of body weight or force onto the knee. Right. And then also he was basically the Chiefs run game last year. Right. So, you know, hope the knee is back to full performance, right? But in general, you know, if you want to scamper around, if you're going to be running, you know, you might as well be trim.

8:33There's only so much like big news that can happen, unfortunately, in the first week of training camp. It's mostly guys are on schedule, ahead of schedule, or get injured. And in this case, I think the Chiefs have to be really happy about where he's at, where Rasheed Rice is at. We also found out Mansour Delane, their top 10 pick, is coming off shoulder surgery, which from an injury that he suffered during the offseason, like during practice, in his words, going too hard. Not supposed to be doing contact. So I don't know how and where that happened, but he is back on the field and they hope that he will be practicing fully soon, but he is practicing somewhat.

9:10Unfortunately, on Monday, we got disturbing news concerning Eric Biennemi. The assistant coach has left camp. the essentially the coach who's expected to run their offense after that his son was arrested and charged with the shooting of Eric Bien-Ami's wife and at their home in Virginia. And obviously, you know, we're just thinking the best thoughts for Mia Bien-Ami. She's in stable condition, but she suffered from multiple gunshot wounds and Bien-Ami will be away from the team in the meantime more injury news um on the field is a good one here Nnamdi Matabuike for the Ravens has been cleared to return to practice for the Ravens he could practice as early as this week for now he's on the PUP list but the doctors have cleared him to return that's significant

10:04Jourdan Rodrigue:you know he was so he's been so missed his presence has been missed and then also the injury itself, there was such murkiness around it throughout the course of the season when he wasn't able to play. So this is absolutely significant news for the Ravens. There were reports that he was potentially going to retire. And he is a guy who's gotten all pro votes. He is a guy who, to me, makes their defensive line go from, hmm, that could be a problem as Jordan slides my pen back to me. Just giving you a little present. Throw it. You like to steal my pen. I do steal your pens a lot. You can't have this one.

10:40I mean, I take them from overseas every summer. I get them from Muji.

10:44Jourdan Rodrigue:And then I take them back. And then I run out. Where were we? We were talking about the defensive line for the Ravens. And generally their defense in general, to me, you could poke some holes in it. It looks a lot different with Matabuike in the middle. So obviously we're going to have to keep tracking him to make sure he's healthy. But they just had one of the best, quote, you know, it's not a signing, but it almost feels like a signing of any team. If I was thinking he was not going to join them again, he is one of the most important offseason additions, even if he was there all along. Malik Neighbors is not starting camp on the PUP list.

11:17I put this in the rundown partly because I saw a lot of reaction. I was like, he's back. Like, this is great. Let's boost him in the fantasy rankings and stuff. Just because you're not on the PUP list doesn't necessarily mean you're remotely healthy. It just means they want you to do some extra stuff at the start of camp. So this one was like a little bit of a TBD. don't celebrate, don't take him any higher. I am still quite concerned about Malik Nabors' recovery and him being on the PUP list or not has no influence on me.

11:45Jourdan Rodrigue:Yeah, for a lot of the Giants in general, but specifically this situation, it is I will believe it when I see it kind of a situation. And, you know, he'd still be eligible for short-term injured reserve at the beginning of the season. We'll see. Let's get to the news I know you've been waiting for. One of the reporters who helped confirm slash report the Jacoby Brissett deal is right here on my left. Jordan Rodrigue, insider. We should get like a sound drop or something. Well, you helped confirm that Jacoby Brissett has indeed signed a new deal. I don't know if you had the terms, but I'll give Ian Rappaport where I saw it first, the credit.

12:24Yes, he first reported it. $15.5 million. Incentives would bump that up an extra$5.5 million or so to$21 million. We don't know what the incentives are. that is roughly a 10 million dollar raise off of where jacoby brissett was scheduled to be paid he was serving as his own agent he talked about that and said it was a little stressful that situation but i gotta say good job jacoby brissett agent let's listen to him i mean i think i gotta go out there and prove it you know i mean i don't think that's i don't think it's a means a given

12:56Jourdan Rodrigue:just because a deal gets done i think you know you go out there and put your best foot forward I think at the end of the day, no matter what, who money was, I think as the coach and as the people of the organization, they got to put the best person forward. So he's talking about whether he is just the starter or whether he has to earn it. I hear what he's saying there. When I saw the terms of this contract, Jordan, I said, oh, there actually isn't going to be a quarterback battle in Arizona. If there was if I was there was any doubt because this contract actually shows to me he doesn't have to prove it.

13:27He's the starter.

13:28Jourdan Rodrigue:Right. That was my interpretation. Tell me if you disagree. No, I don't disagree at all. I think that when you're looking at these incentives in this contract, it's pretty clear what they would be or what they are. Will you continue to be the starter? How many games are you playing? How many snaps are you taking? That is what these incentives seem to me to be all about. And I think it really, he stood his ground. I remember telling you, Greg, the story last offseason when I was at Cardinals training camp and I had a conversation with Jacoby Brissett for a story I was writing for The Athletic about being a backup quarterback.

14:01Jourdan Rodrigue:He was so confident and competitively minded that he was going to work to try to get that job. And Kyler Murray was still on the roster. Now, it wasn't like a negative thing. It wasn't tension. None of that. It just was how he is and how he was thinking about it. And in a very non-cliché, I'm going to prepare like I'm going to. It wasn't that at all. It was like, no, no, I may be starting by midseason. And so he called his shot there and then he stood his ground. And I think for any of us who are in a negotiation with or anyone out there who's thinking, do I ask for the thing? Ask for the thing.

14:36Jourdan Rodrigue:See what happens. Maybe Carson Beck is taking snaps in the spring, metaphorically speaking, and the organization decides to pay you. And they didn't have to really give him this money. That's why I give him some credit. And my old boss, Florio, and others who are in the business like to point out when players who serve as their own agent don't do that well. They didn't have to give him this money, so he did pretty well. My only concern, and this could be part of the Cardinals preview, which is coming up, but what the heck. Here's just a list of play callers Jacoby Brissett has played under in his career.

15:08Might not be complete. Josh McDaniels, Rod Chudzinski, Nick Sirianni for a while, the Sirianni-Frank Reich duo, but that was the longest he was ever in one place. George Godsey was his coordinator with Miami. Alex Van Pelt a couple times with Cleveland and New England and Kevin Stefanski. And then Drew Petsing last year. There's a lot of systems. There's not this system. He has not really been in the tree. There's some connection a little bit with Petsing last year and whatever. All these trees aren't necessarily pure or whatever. But he's not a guy who's shown that this is the right system for him.

15:45And so I expect to see Carson Beck play multiple starts this year. Whether that starts in like week seven or 10 or 14 probably depends on how Jacoby is playing. But I think it's, it's interesting that they're giving him this money and they've never seen him in this type of system. They must believe.

16:03Jourdan Rodrigue:Well, and the teammates, he helped get his teammates paid. You know, he, he has, he, Trey McBride had one of the most productive seasons last season got, you know, has gotten the contract previously, but then also got the all pros and, and all of these things because he's one of six players in the NFL that is a 99 on Madden this year. Yeah. In a one way, he is one of the six best players in the NFL continued to be, get his targets as, as we know, despite the one and 11 record that Jacoby Brissett did have as the starter, but this was also, we'll get to it in the preview. Yeah. It just was such an injured team and I don't want to get into specifics till we start, but like it, I just think he really endeared himself to his teammates very clearly.

16:43Jourdan Rodrigue:Michael Wilson being one of them. Those guys are celebrating big time when Kyler left the team and then there was sort of this statement put out by the team in the spring that Jacoby Brissett was going to be their starter and then they backed off of it because of the contract negotiation. But when that statement was initially put out, you're seeing Instagram posts from teammates celebrating this. Like, it is really, his teammates love him. And so if you're the organization and you're trying to say, hey this is the first year under this new head coach we're gonna give try to give you guys a shot even though secretly we're setting up for whatever happens in 2027 for the quarterback or whatever don't win too many games they have to instill at least you know this sort of confidence in the rest of the locker room and i think that's what some of this money is about that's a great point and i'm glad that they did it so people can't accuse the cardinals of being cheap which they have over the years.

17:42Jeremiah Love, by the way, getting all the RB1 snaps early. So that's good to hear. Let's fly through the rest of this news and then we'll get going on this NFC West preview. Pup list notables. I'm going to just point out from around the camps that have started. George Kittle is still on the pup list. No surprise there. Michael Williams, who was the first round edge for the 49ers, is on the pup list. So he's still not fully recovered from his knee injuries. Kyler Gordon, the defensive back for the Bears, who's seemingly always hurt, is hurt to start camp. Tavondre Sweat, who the Jets traded for, big nose tackle, is also on the pub list.

18:20Some people that are full go. Quinchot Junkins, not going to be on the pub list. Again, kind of like Malik Neighbors. I do want to see it, but there's been more positive signs in terms of him practicing. Pukun Nakua is not holding out or doing anything like that. Both him and Alaric Jackson, their left tackle, who had off-field issues and who each could both be suspended by the NFL are practicing at Rams camp. The Rams got going on Sunday as are Nick Bosa and Fred Warner at 49ers camp. That's some real news. Like when you got those guys back, we'll talk about the NFC West. The Panthers have just keep getting bad luck.

18:58Mike Jackson and Rob Hunt, who's a big important guard, highly paid, have been out for most of their camp so far with back tightness. Doesn't seem that serious, but it's just been a lot of bad Panthers news. The last remaining rookie who was unsigned in the NFL was? Gabe Yakis. Gabe Yakis. Strange situation there. It was a second round pick by the Patriots who had some injuries that maybe they didn't know about when they drafted him. Not what you want. You do wonder if there's some conditions in this contract, but he is into camp and we'll see if and when he starts practicing. And I liked the news that DeAndre Hopkins was at Patriots camp.

19:36possibly as a coach. How about that?

19:38Jourdan Rodrigue:Yeah, I like that. The world moves fast. They were saying he might look into some front office stuff too. I love that. I like when former players kind of explore around and see where they can contribute to an organization. We always do the happy trails to player X. I'm going to wait a little bit on DeAndre Hopkins. Oh, yeah. But that's a potential Hall of Famer there. And one of the players, kind of similar style, A.J. Brown, you know, with the Patriots. The first ball of camp was a deep ball. to A.J. Brown, but he didn't catch it. I was going to say, these coordinator scripts, they want you to know what the first one is.

20:12Jourdan Rodrigue:That's a bad omen, though. He apparently went up for one hand, didn't make the catch. And I was just thinking back to, like, I distinctly remember his first days in Eagles camp. He destroyed everyone. And I was like, oh, wow. It's not happening right now with the Patriots. Before we go to break, let's just listen to Sean McVay on a possible Aaron Donald return. He's going to go through what he's going through right now. We'll see how his body's responding to some of the training and the way that he puts himself through the paces to know what it looks and feels like, to be ready to take on what the rigors of an NFL season entail.

20:46Jourdan Rodrigue:And if he's feeling good about that, then we'll move forward in what those dates are. I'll share with you guys when I have more information. That smile at the end and the way he said it. No poker face. It does not seem like Aaron Donald is even still deciding. I guess there's a scenario where the working out goes so poorly or he gets hurt or something, but it's all but confirmed at this point. I will tell you guys this. I was there on site when he gave his press conference and he was asked about the potential of Odell Beckham Jr. joining the team. And he gave a face that was exactly like that.

21:21Jourdan Rodrigue:And then I was out in the parking lot where I would do often do my work because there were no, at the old facility, there were no places to go and make a phone call. Got a tip that they were in fact, from outside the building source, they were in fact going to bring in Odell Beckham Jr. And it happened in such a sequential fashion where I was like, this guy has no poker face. He really doesn't. Now, will Aaron Donald be on the Rams by the time that NFL daily goes there in a week and a half? I don't think so. I don't think, I don't think it would be that soon, but I think it's all but confirmed at this point.

25:09Back on NFL Daily, if you weren't with us on Friday's show, we debuted our new format around the NFC West. The vision preview is coming today. We did the AFC West on Friday.

25:24Jourdan Rodrigue:We got good reviews on the format. Okay. That's good to know. Here's the format. 12 minutes per team. We got a bunch of different categories. You will learn what those categories are in just a minute as we go through them. But let's put 12 minutes on the clock. We do it alphabetically. So we're starting with the Cardinals. You know, if we had a producer that's like, well, maybe do the Cardinals. No, we're going to stick with the alphabetical order. We've got three Super Bowl contenders and the Arizona Cardinals in this division. And the first category here is what is bringing us joy for your hometown team, the Arizona Cardinals.

26:06Jourdan Rodrigue:Yeah, I'm going to just hit it right back to you, Greg, because I kind of talked about it already with Jacoby. that whole contract situation. Oh, that gave you joy. It was really amusing to me. It was amusing and not in like a negative way or like I wasn't making fun of the Cardinals on this at all. I think for organization and player, it was the right thing to do. It just made so much sense, but it was hilarious objectively that it dragged out for that long. And that was like the main storyline around the Cardinals right now. I mean, it's like a little bit of making fun. So I will, because I love ball, I will give more of a full-throated, full-hearted answer here.

26:44Jourdan Rodrigue:Shots fired. Here's what's bringing me joy. This skill position group, Jeremiah Love, Trey McBride, Michael Wilson, and then I'm going to put a maybe on Marvin Harrison Jr. and even a little Kendrick Bourne sprinkled in. I love that group. Like, that's an explosive group. That's a fun team to watch. If you took that skill position group and you put them on the Panthers, like I'd feel better about them winning the division, for instance. If you put that skill position group and put them on the Packers, I'd be like, I think they're more of a Super Bowl contender because they have that skill position group.

27:26There are other elements to the entire team build that obviously we're going to have questions about. And quarterback is one of them and Jacoby Persett in a new system. But I think all those dudes are difference makers. And I'm including Michael Wilson in that group. Like Michael Wilson is a dude. Trey McBride is the best tight end in the NFL. Jeremiah Love is one of the best running back prospects of the last 10 years. Like it is an exciting group. If Marvin Harrison is your two and Bourne's your three, that's a good situation.

27:53Jourdan Rodrigue:It is. It's layers too, which is what I really like about it. And, you know, there's questions about the offensive line and how that group's going to look in terms of what Jeremiah Love is actually going to be able to do. in their run game. And then obviously you had to at least pay some respectable amount of money to the guy who's going to be throwing the football. So yes, you have to make, you do have talented skills. So you have to make those guys happy. They are at least going to spread the ball around and get targets. One thing, Greg, that I think is kind of getting slept on is Kendrick Bourne and Mike LaFleur.

28:26Jourdan Rodrigue:Mike LaFleur being the new head coach of the Cardinals and who's designing their offensive system. They're tight. Mike LaFleur loves him. They have a history. like this to me this is a sneaky player to watch in this offense so that would give them even more levels because Jeremiah Love is is a good pass catcher and is going to be explosive I am buying all the Michael Wilson stock if I had to give one of the two receivers a long-term contract it's Michael Wilson not Marvin Harrison Jr. I think Michael Wilson can be a top 20 receiver in this league for a long time I don't think it was like you know late catch-up merchant Like, no, he was beating some tough coverage one-on-one.

29:04It's a good group overall. And that actually, it leads me into my most important non-quarterback, because it's all connected. I'm going to go Paris Johnson Jr., who's their left tackle and was a high pick, what, four years ago and has steadily improved. And it's a little bit symbolic of the rest of the offensive line. But if they play as well as they could, then you have these skilled players and a pretty dynamic offensive line. Paris Johnson could be like a top five left tackle if he improves a little bit. You signed Isaac Sayamalo from Pittsburgh. You like your center, Froho. The right side of the line, more questions there, but you did draft Chase Basantis high in the second round.

29:44So that's someone you're excited about. And it's like, that's an offensive line with potential. So there's a lot of ifs, ifs, ifs, and the schedule's brutal. But if that offensive line, if Paris Johnson becomes that kind of dude, plus skill position, you don't need a great quarterback for that offense to be pretty good.

29:58Jourdan Rodrigue:And look, this scheme, we'll see, right? But allegedly, it is supposed to make life a little bit easier on the protections that you have up front on those offensive linemen. And I feel like, too, this is an interesting. Sumalo, I've been catching some clips, right? Coming out of Cardinals camp early. It's early. This is filed away under things that don't matter yet. Sumalo against your guy, Walter Nolan. saw a couple of real positive reps from Sumalo coming out of Cardinals camp. So this is an interesting group altogether to me. My most important player, it just has to be Trey McBride, honestly.

30:34Of the non-quarterback. I said you can't pick, and you could pick a different coach if you really wanted, but non-head coach, non-quarterback.

30:40Jourdan Rodrigue:I'll get to that in a minute. We'll get to the scheme stuff. But the Trey McBride factor in this offense, it's going to look a little bit different, I think, and that'll come to some of my scheme stuff I want to talk about. But he got paid. He's one of the best tight ends, if not right now, the best tight end. We'll see when Tucker Craft comes back, which is like one of the best tight ends in the league, if not the best. He has gotten the respect from his peers. And also, he's starting to be a little bit more vocal about the direction of the organization. A couple of podcasts he did this offseason, he was a little bit more vocal about, we need to get this thing right.

31:14Jourdan Rodrigue:We need to get this thing moving and going. Get some credibility. Get some seriousness here in this organization. He's the guy right now because Kittle was hurt at the end of last year. But I think even before that, there was separation. And when you combine the blocking, the receiving, the down to down consistency, he's he's tight end one right now in the NFL. Well, you said that the scheme stuff is related when it comes to McBride. Let's hear about it. Yes, because this is not even a hot take. This is just just this is just football, Greg, which I also love, by the way, Greg. not as much because you just picked like a little funny contract story as the thing that's bringing you true that means that I that I like it less than you the this is the team that I think has a better shot of actually playing 13 personnel actually copying what the Rams did like every team trying to use their tight ends a little bit more and and load up on these tight ends so they can build at least a 12 personnel room but everybody sort of had their eye on that 13 personnel Well, Mike LaFleur, who helped set that in motion last season for the Rams, has a really like sneaky underrated high, high upside, high ceiling tight ends room.

32:23Jourdan Rodrigue:Obviously, Trey McBride is the headline here. Elijah Higgins has some stuff to him. Seriously, really came along near the end of last season. Is it more of a pass catcher? He's been in a blocking role, but definitely more of like that mismatch pass catcher. He was a former receiver and tip Ryman, who is coming off the injury is the guy who really activates the blocking surface and really does a lot of that dirty work, but still also can catch the ball very respectively. So this to me, what I think we're going to see in camp for the Cardinals is I think we're going to see Michael floor do exactly what the Rams did, which is established the 11 personnel playbook, because as you mentioned, they've got a respectable three deep of those receivers where they can actually do that and then translate that over into these 13 personnel concepts again just like what the rams did last season and i think of the teams that are wanting or hoping to try to do something like this it's very sneaky but and under under the radar but i think mike lafleur and this team is actually got the personnel and the scheme to do it yeah mike lafleur their new head coach he's a huge question like does he have the goods we'll find out he's sort of the forgotten and LeFleur brother, a guy who, when you think about the people from the Shanahan McVay tree, like it took them a while to get picked, including this offseason.

33:39They were the 10th team to hire a head coach. He was not their first choice, so he has to prove it. But schematically and with the players that he has, it does make a lot of sense. This category, by the way, is called Scheme Dream, where we talk some schematic stuff. I just want to point out the defensive coordinator is still the same, Nick Rollis. He did some really weird stuff a couple years ago, super creative. with Jonathan Gannon, who was the head coach. And everyone was like, wow, that was pretty cool. They had a lot of injuries, not a lot of talent. Last year, they had more talent. I don't think they were expected to do as much weird stuff.

34:11Then they got hurt all over again. It was less effective. I think it was partly less effective because Buda Baker was less effective. And he's a big part of all that. Getting older, so him getting better. They're pretty deep at edge. They have Josh Sweat, who's on the PUP list right now. And Zayven Collins and Barron Browning and BJ Ojala. are like guys that are decent, but it's not like the most talented group. So just keeping an eye on how creative Nick Rallis and this Cardinals defense, which doesn't look amazing on paper is going to be, but you mentioned Walter Nolan, his is a young defensive tackle that I really like.

34:44Let's go to the things go wrong. If section,

34:47Jourdan Rodrigue:well, it's, it really goes part and parcel with what you're talking about with their defense. If they don't look like a pro operation overall, first of all, this progress, that's all they're asking for after such a bad season. decimated by injuries. This was the number one team in adjusted games lost to injuries last season per FTN and per the elite FTN almanac, which I've really enjoyed. I've enjoyed the writing style of a lot of those write-ups too. So shout out to that. The second most injured teams in 25 years. In 25 years since they created the stat. Like it's absolutely wild. They lost people.

35:20Jourdan Rodrigue:They lost players everywhere. The defense, they are getting back some of these really promising corners. Garrett Williams, who played some slot for them last season is going to be back. Mack Wilson, the linebacker is going to be back. Walter Nolan, who we mentioned is going to be back. Will Johnson was really banged up on and off last season. He's going to be back. Sean Murphy Bunting, who may at this point be a move player or maybe even a depth guy because of how Garrett Williams was playing, you know, could come back. This is going to be really, really interesting to me because these are all guys I like.

35:52Jourdan Rodrigue:These are all players that I see potential in. and yet the coordinator is a huge question mark to me still after such a strong start. Yeah. It's less about the coordinator. I think he's fun and it's just, it's the schedule. I mean, that's, the things go wrong if the schedule is actually as hard as it looks. Sometimes schedules are predictable, sometimes they're not. I think the Cardinals do not fit in these bottom five or six teams in the NFL. I am more like the projections that the FDN Almanac had. They actually, in terms of just pure efficiency, had them as the 23rd best team in the league, which doesn't sound great, but it means you're better than eight or 19.

36:28Yeah. I agree with that. Like, I think you put them in a, in a bad division. They could come in second place, like the NFC South or some other, but they are not in that division. Like they open with at chargers and then Seahawks 49ers. And like, can you find a way to avoid being 0 and 3? And then it's on paper with this division. And even with some of the out of division schedule, it is just absolutely brutal. and then part and parcel of that is kind of like, all right, if we're winning too much, like when do we pull the Carson? They could kind of tank by going to Carson Beck at some point. Like if they go to Carson Beck at week seven, I feel like the season's got to feel over in week seven.

37:04Jourdan Rodrigue:Part and parcel, huh? Sealing floor of the team. You know, I just mentioned the 23rd team in DVOA. So with the schedule, if they play to their talent and stay healthy, I still think they could scrape out like six wins. Yeah, that's my ceiling for them. Six, seven wins. But with this schedule, that's hard. That's almost saying that in a bad division, you might be able to win eight or nine. Yeah, well, that's my ceiling for them is six games. And then I could see four that they could win on their actual schedule. So for me, four to six games is their spot. And that's fine. I feel like their floor is like two.

37:41They could be the worst team in the NFL because if they get hurt, if things go wrong again, and I know we're not trying to think about injuries.

37:47Jourdan Rodrigue:I don't think they will be. They have competence, if not elite talent at quarterback. It's just competent. You're just setting a stability factor there. And then I think this offense is going to be good. It's like you got a couple games against the commanders and Saints and Giants. You got to win those games. You know, the others are big, big underdogs. Let's go to the Los Angeles Rams. The Super Bowl favorites. in the desert right now. And that's part of what's bringing me joy about this team. We can get to the defense, like should be as good as the offense, which is exciting. But to me, the fact that we have a super team, that we kind of got a boogeyman, that we got a team that when they're in primetime or every day of the week is kind of like the flashy team because of the Miles Garrett trade in large part, but also because of the other players, Puka Nakua, and you have the MVP and all the other moves we can get into.

38:43I just like that. I, it's not cause my family's Rams fans. So that, that doesn't hurt. But like, I like that people will be like going at them. Every Rams game is going to feel like a bigger game that I like.

38:56Jourdan Rodrigue:Well, it's going to be similar to what we saw. I don't even think it'll be as, as similar as what we saw in 2021. Cause what we saw in 2021 was all this came in waves. Everybody knew that Stafford and McVay was going to be solid, but then they just kept adding players in waves. Now everybody's got a full training camp to get their best ready for that game on the schedule. And so for me, what this sort of reminds me of is some of that 2018 stuff, some of that league rattling concept changing stuff. When the collision of a good team with a good defense or a good offense in this case, clashes and collides against a perceived super team like this.

39:33Jourdan Rodrigue:And that's for me, that's my joy is like, what are we going to learn out of this season? Not just from the Rams and how they're built. They're built like a, a what if team like what if we just tried this you know people think people are talking with their friends in the bar or whatever like wouldn't it be cool if a team just did this like wouldn't be what if we added miles garrett to byron young who's a top 25 young edge and kobe turner who's a top 15 young defensive tackle and brayden fisk and they like josiah stewart and what if we added trent mcduffie in the back end and his old teammate give him a lot of money and like they feel good about every position.

40:07I was trying to think of comps. People have brought up the Eagles Dream Team with Nnamdi Asuma, which if you look back at the time, was more of a media creation. It was like they added like Asuma, who is awesome. And like Vince Young is their backup. And a couple, it wasn't the same. Reminds me a little more of just like peak Patriots when they were rolling a little bit and just like, okay, that's the team that everyone's shooting for because they're just playing that well. And yet, like, are they even favorites in this division? That's for later. We're going to predict it. Let's go for the most important non-quarterback.

40:38Jourdan Rodrigue:Yeah. So I had a big number of factors to choose from here because I wanted to pick someone like perhaps Kobe Turner, who couldn't finish that NFC championship game because of the injury. And then really is going to be counted on as the true nose, like that anchor that lets miles Garrett do whatever he wants to do, essentially on the edge. Warren McClendon, who's taking over for Rob Havenstein at right tackle depth along their offensive line is obviously going to be crucial. I am hope I'm actually going to go with Dave Ragone, a name that Dave Ragone, many people have not heard of, but he's the quarterback's coach.

41:11Jourdan Rodrigue:And this is the guy who is actually going to be in charge of getting either backup Stetson Bennett or backup rookie Ty Simpson ready to back up MVP quarterback, Matthew Stafford at 38 years old. If anything happens to him, if that tackle depth isn't what we think it's going to be, If Alaric Jackson, the left tackle, misses time due to his legal situation, if the league decides to suspend him, this is a potential pivot point here collectively. If anything happens, I don't want to assume anything will because he was great last season. But if anything happens, backup quarterback is a huge question mark for this team.

41:50Jourdan Rodrigue:And that is Dave Ragone's job. That is not Sean McVay's job. Sean McVay famously is not developing these quarterbacks if they are not the number one quarterback behind the scenes. That is Dave Ragone, who is Sean McVay's number one guy. The coach he has hoped to not lose the most over the last couple of years. He is in charge. And camp reports are saying so far he has been glued to Ty Simpson. I love that choice. And I immediately searched for Dave Ragone's game log. Because I was like... Well, I'm going to get a phone call because... Oh, you can't... Keep him on the radar. I was like, I think Dave Ragone started some games.

42:26and it was the first year I covered the NFL.

42:30Jourdan Rodrigue:Lefty. Long time ago. He averaged 3.4 yards per attempt. That might be the lowest number I've ever seen. I mean, it was only for 40 attempts. He struggled in those two games for the Texans. But he's an elite athlete compared to everyone else, compared to like 99.6 % of people have tried to play sports. He made it to professional sports. But I just remembered he struggled in a really difficult to watch way. 135 yards combined in two starts. You don't see that too much. I chose Pukunakua. That's a good choice. Try to go outside the box. It's not just because he's so great. I guess you just don't look football as much as me.

43:14Jourdan Rodrigue:You just picked the obvious answer. Well, they're a little thin. like Pukunakua is dealing with this civil suit, some allegations from, from a woman and there's pictures of bite marks out there. And he made some dunder hit it off field stuff last season. And like that made you not related to that. That was like, made you question his maturity a little bit. And yet, you know, he, he has the argument for maybe the best receiver in the NFL, the most important. And the reason I put him here more than anything is not just that, is that it's a little thin after them. Yes. Devontae Adams was not the same last year.

43:53And I want to see Devontae Adams maybe like either stop that decline or improve. I know the tight end group is great and we can get into that with the scheme and everything, but the third receiver is just not there. And so they just need Puka to stay and be at that level.

44:10Jourdan Rodrigue:Yeah. Or else it all gets a little rickety if you're counting too much on Devontae Adams. And then who do you think will be their third receiver? I think Konate Mumfield, first of all, could take a step forward, needs to take a step forward. Seventh round pick from a year ago. Yeah. Played well for a seventh round rookie. Played well. And if you go back and you watch his tape while he was at Pitt, they were doing a lot of things similarly to what McVay's, like, former sort of pure 11 personnel offense looked like. And he really, he has this knack for, like, really understanding, like, where the voids on the field are that he needs to hit.

44:40I mean, he was on the field in the moments that decided whether they went to the Super Bowl or not.

44:44Jourdan Rodrigue:It was hard because he and it was tough, tough, tough moments. for him too. But this is a player who I know they're really high on and who, like I said, absolutely has to take a step forward. Jordan Whittington maybe is that, you know, lateral receiver three, but he's going to be used a lot as a blocker and sort of like elevating that run game and getting that, that, uh, you know, sort of figured out if they want to stay in some of these smaller personnels when they're run blocking. So that's someone to look at too. But this is this is a for me, it goes into scheme dream with them, Greg. Go for it.

45:17Jourdan Rodrigue:You know, I know everybody's probably sick of me talking about 13 personnel. Tough cookies. I'm going to talk about it all year, guys. But this is one of the stories of last season, the three tight ends on the field. And basically Sean McVay taking his 11 personnel playbook and translating it directly into what his tight ends, who all could catch the ball and all could block, would be able to do using those same concepts. and it was really interesting to me that they stayed with the two elite receivers this year and it begged the question for me, does he now start to build in more 12 personnel, two tight ends, two receivers, understanding the depth questions that he does have and understanding where some of the skill sets are, what they didn't have was a more natural fit into 12 personnel.

46:01Jourdan Rodrigue:They could go 11 to 13 in my mind because he already had an entire team understanding what that 11 personnel look like three three receivers making them bigger going into three tight ends playing very similar pass structure so for me what if he builds out more 12 into camp we don't know we have to see that gives them maybe like not player depth that they that they do need but another answer should anything happen to any of the receivers and they have great depth that tight end it's outrageous Colby Parkinson has turned into a dude Tyler Higbee has been there forever might be his last year with the Rams we'll see but they have a second round pick and Terrence Ferguson from a year ago who's very physically impressive and could take a step up they have a second round pick this year in Max Clare they have a guy in Davis Allen who literally some games would play more than Devontae Adams because they trusted him so much as a blocker and they were playing so much 13 personnel and yes it's gotten talked about a lot this offseason I don't think by you but just by everyone but I don't think like I do think it's worth pointing out that they did it more than like more than double any other team in the league more than probably any team in NFL history and the efficiency with which they did it.

47:09Like they were the best offense ever by a lot. If you just isolate those plays. So it was like that effective. It made that big of a difference. We have to move on. Things go wrong for this super duper team.

47:19Jourdan Rodrigue:Yeah. If. Well, we're not trying to factor in injuries here. Not really. No. Yeah. It just feels like for me, I've already, I've already presented the depth concerns that I have. Obviously those still are a factor here in this, in this category. For me, it's sort of a much simpler question than that. Like, what if it just doesn't work? Like, what if the vibes go bad or something? I have no proof of believing that would be the case other than if like compounding injuries happen at one position group that's important or more. This is like they did it in waves in 2021 and it sort of kept the energy rolling.

47:57Jourdan Rodrigue:This is interesting to me because it's like, what's going to be their thing that they do in November? That's always the question with this team when they're a contending team. What's going to be the new thing or the wrinkle they add in November that sparks everybody up again? So for me, it's like, okay, all of this looks awesome and so fun on paper. What if it just doesn't work? Right. I think the two routes, and I'm picking nits, would be the defense is just good instead of great. It looks pretty great on paper. Secondaries especially are unpredictable. I think that goes to what if it doesn't work?

48:31McDuffie and Watson come in. They really trust Cam Curl and Quentin Lake. Like it all makes sense. But between them and the linebackers, maybe that is just like, oh, it's just good. Not great. My answer, though, is the offensive line. You know, Alaric Jackson might be suspended. We'll see. Like they played well last year. You mentioned McClendon at center. It's Coleman Shelton. And Avila has been good when he's been out there. It's a little up and down. I just feel like that's probably my biggest concern is that that's not like a difference making offensive line. And then I could throw this into our little lanyard section, which is just like a little something extra if we've got it, which is, you know, special teams.

49:07Jourdan Rodrigue:Well, yeah, that. Much like the Rams, we have not spoken about special teams. I mean, it probably cost them the Super Bowl last year overall. One minute. I would say it did. Yeah, they hired new special teams coordinator, Bubba Ventron. They have Harrison Meeves as their kicker. Still big questions for me in the return game for them. They're not an aggressive return team. They started being a little more aggressive with Jordan Winnington last year, which was great, but they had some ball security issues that really cost them. And then their return coverage was a huge problem for them, obviously, in key moments last season and into the postseason.

49:42Jourdan Rodrigue:So that's a huge question. And my lanyard is Cliff Kingsbury's there, but I don't think he's going to be doing much with the quarterback specifically. I don't know why we keep pushing this narrative that he's working with quarterbacks. But I think there's going to be some interesting creative stuff they might try. Well, I was going to say. Some tempo, some spread with big bodies. Like that is what I would be really curious about seeing. They played at the second fastest pace of any team in the league last year. Stafford's great at that. So I'm really glad you mentioned Kingsbury because the things that he does well, tempo and then coming up with like four or five plays each week.

50:16That's like, Oh, that was pretty cool. Like that's kind of a perfect role for him.

50:20Jourdan Rodrigue:Yes. In LA. It's great. I agree. And also I can't be the only one who noticed from the content that the Rams social media team posted that the immortal trailer is already at training camp. It's parked right outside the dorm. What is the trailer here? The Immortal Chamber. The trailer. The Silver Bullet trailer that it comes from. Immortal. The Chamber is parked right outside the freaking dorms. The Immortal actually came in, what, fourth in MVP voting last year? It was like Stafford. Well, I don't have a vote, but that's what I hear. I'm working on it. We haven't gotten to the ceiling floor. Obviously, the ceiling is the Super Bowl.

50:55Jourdan Rodrigue:Yeah. I think the floor, they are one of two teams. I just would be stunned if they didn't make the playoffs. It's hard in the NFL. So to me, the floor is it's a tough division, and you're playing on the road in the playoffs as a wild card team. That's how I feel. For my ceiling floor, I was curious, have you heard of the phenomenon of the Zara death pants? No. Okay, let me inform you about this. The Zara death pants are a very wide-leg flowy pair of Palazzo pants sold by Zara, the clothing company, that are causing young women to trip and fall in heinous fashion if they are not totally focused on the legs of the pants and they're swishing.

51:35Jourdan Rodrigue:Sort of reminded me of when I tripped over my own pants at the combine and fell face down right in front of me. You are a great physical comedian. Right in front of another set. Really embarrassing moment. These pants are stylish and they're beautiful and they got a lot going for them and they look great on paper. But if you are not locked in, you're going to eat shit. Okay. The expectations are a lot to deal with. This is year 10 for McVeigh. Like these are the good old days. they're in them right now. Sometimes, you know, it's been a fun build like in Stafford 2.0. If you think about it, it's been very orderly.

52:07Wild card loss in a surprise season. Division round loss where they were rounding into, I think, championship form right at the end. And then last year where they're one of the best two teams in the league, but they lose in the conference title. Like now they are expected.

52:21Jourdan Rodrigue:Zara Deathpant. That was actually the only thing I have noticed. This is a stupid point, but they're a lot like they're stupider than Zara Deathpant. No, yours was great. Go for it, Greg. Their losses have been like perfectly distributed in the Sean McVay era. Okay. When they've made the playoffs, they've lost in the wildcard round twice. They've lost in the division round twice. They've lost now in the conference championship game. You've lost in the Super Bowl and you've won the Super Bowl. If you just sort of averaged it out, they've almost done exactly what you would expect at each time. So maybe, maybe it's their time to go win another Super Bowl.

52:55Let's take a break and let's come back with another team, another pair of teams we think could win the Super Bowl. At least I think the 49ers is good. They're up next.

56:09Back on NFL Daily. It's a big division right off the top. We're continuing. it on Wednesday. Who do we got? AFC North, I think. NFC North.

56:22Jourdan Rodrigue:NFC North. OK, but we'll have a show in between. More on that later. That'll be with Nick Schuch. For now, we're talking about a team in the San Francisco 49ers who are already practicing like the Rams, like the Seahawks. That's giving me joy. What is giving you joy about this 49ers? Remembering that Mike Evans is a 49er. Yes. Which I know is a sense of really sore point for Tampa Bay Buccaneers fans. And I think that's totally fair to feel your feelings on that. But watching him walk into 49ers camp via social media and then some of the practice reports about him just like going up for catches already and just how he just looks like the receiver one there.

57:06Jourdan Rodrigue:It to me, it just makes so much sense to me. And I know he's coming off of the collarbone injury. I understand all of that, but it just brings me joy that they've got a bona fide wide receiver one and there's like lore to it. And I just think it's going to be a fun year for him. Yeah. The, the report that like Purdy's first deep ball, which they reportedly did not hit on almost at all in practices last year is to Mike Evans and he has separation and he makes the play. Omens inside. I'm into it. It's very similar to what, what's bringing me joy about this team, which is just that they won't go away.

57:41Yeah. That they've won 12 games in three of the last four years. and here they are right back. Last year was supposed to be a step back and it really wasn't. And that the offseason, including Evans, gave me joy. Like, I just think Evans and then the Osa-Odigizua trade was just exactly what they needed for those just checking in. You know, they traded a mid-round pick. They got these guys. Evans took way less money to play for the 49ers just because he wanted to. And they got Odigizua for a low pick price, like a third round pick. And he's exactly what they needed. And they bring back Dre Greenlaw, where he belongs and even some of the lottery kind of defensive back tickets they they bought jack jones nate hobbs like those make sense to me jack jones in the middle already supposedly at two interceptions like tipping passes and stuff at practice so i just think they had a a really good offseason considering they were kind of limited by all these big salaries at the top uh of their docket including trent williams who got a new deal i think they really did well that that leads me into my most important non quarterback, Nick Bosa.

58:46Jourdan Rodrigue:Okay. Just cause he's one of those big salaries and you know, he missed a lot of time in 2024 too. And then he missed almost all last year with the ACL was a second time. And they just, the way they're built, I know Diggy Zua is going to help in the middle, but he's like a second guy, you know, like right now you need four or five guys. I just don't think they have enough, but they really don't have enough if Nick Bosa isn't like capital Nick Bosa, one of the five best pass rushers in the NFL. The way that they're going to do some of their fronts and reports out of training camp already have, have shown Raheem Morris mixing with some five man fronts too.

59:29Jourdan Rodrigue:And so Mike L. Williams at some point coming back into full speed is going to be really important for them. Yep. The first round pick right now, they actually have been using Romello height in their starting lineup, a third round pick, which I like. I like eventually as a little bit of an out wider player, if they're going to play some of these wide five man fronts, because I like him as a little bit more of a speed ball, right? Purely off the edge as a rusher. And that, that sort of goes into some of the mix of players that they're going to have along this front. You're right. Nick Bosa has to be outstanding for them in order for this to really come to life, because you're just looking at when you play odd fronts like this, you're looking at mathematical equations and how you can be a plus two over someone else's blocking plus one or plus one and a half if they have a chip.

1:00:11Jourdan Rodrigue:So I really, really like what they're trying to do. Are they healthy enough to do it? Which is why my most important non quarterback is their medical staff. Okay. And I know that's a little on the nose or tongue in cheek or whatever, but the 49ers had the fifth most adjusted games lost due to injuries in 2025 per FTN Almanac. It felt like more because of some of the players who were injured. Fred Warner's coming back, which is, that's another reason for joy. Overall, if you like football, you like watching Fred Warner play football. He's practicing. And I think he elevates even a, maybe not as explosive Dre Greenlaw, who had some flashes when he was healthy and then has been dealing obviously with the injuries too.

1:00:51Jourdan Rodrigue:George Kittle will obviously at some point be back. We're not sure yet about the Australia game. Jake Tonjes would back him up at that point, He played well last year, got the contract. Nick Bosa, as you mentioned, Mike Evans, like I mentioned, is coming off the broken collarbone. Rock Purdy was banged up through the year and missed games. Ricky Pearsall was banged up and missed some time and hasn't quite taken that next level yet. Christian McCaffrey is 30 years old. Mike Evans is 33. Trent Williams is, what, 38? So you're reaching, like, the end of this era, and they just keep going. They're like, you know, they just keep, like, respawning, essentially.

1:01:25Jourdan Rodrigue:and this medical staff to me it becomes the most important non-quarterback in this organization yeah and it's been rough for a couple seasons but that staff's been there for for a long time and it just feels like it's been bad luck but yeah you may and it's not just the old player like michael williams their first round pick who's probably more of like a run a run stuffer they they need to they need to stay healthy you're you're absolutely right my my scheme dream is gonna be about what you mentioned with raheem morris who was great last year and he wasn't calling the plays for the Falcons on defense.

1:01:56That was Jeff Ulbrich. But a creative defense of mine, they're going to be... I want to see what they do to change in general. What do you expect? Do you think they're going to be as wild as a Falcons 2025 defense? Because you do that in part when you don't have all the horses. And like I said, I like Odegizua and Bosa and everything, but it's relatively thin. The defensive tackles have a lot to prove outside Odegizua, and the edges do too. The secondary is fine, but I think this team could use a little Raheem Morris sprinkling in some creativity.

1:02:38Jourdan Rodrigue:Yeah, we've talked about this with a couple of other teams in our past preview, the Raiders being one of them. This is a much more talented defense than that, so I don't want to compare them by any means one-to-one here, but I think they're going to need some scheme, like you mentioned, and I think for Raheem Morris, Again, mixing up with those odd fronts, those five extra man fronts are going to look like mixing up their secondary a lot, which I think is going to happen. You know, two players who really took a step forward during their rookie seasons last year, one of them is going to play up front at nose, Alfred Collins for them.

1:03:09Jourdan Rodrigue:And he was a factor at times. And he is expected to be that again, if you're going to play those types of fronts, like it really does help to have that anchor point where I call it sort of the center of the solar system that everything else can orbit and rotate. in these different rush packages around that player. And then Upton Stout, who it was bumpy. Let's not be, you know, incorrect here. Like it was bumpy at first as a rookie. He was thrown into it playing right away. He's five foot nine, played a lot bigger than he actually is. And then really through, including through the postseason, really, really took another step forward.

1:03:42Jourdan Rodrigue:And so when you've got Nate Hobbs, who's dealing with injuries and Jack Jones, and then you've got like Diamandor Lenard, who, you know, should be healthy and playing better. like it just it's like to me they're going to mix a lot of their defensive backfield they're going to make things or try to make things as cloudy as possible for the quarterbacks it's almost like we hope that our coverage sets the table a little bit for our rush and eventually our rush when healthy comes together to help the the coverage near the back stretch of the season when teams are going to be trying to throw long on projected starting players in the secondary renardo green second round pick jair brown third round pick malik mustafa fourth round pick di Yamano or Lador, who's been there for a while now.

1:04:22Fifth round pick Upton Stout. Third round pick Marcus Siegley. Fifth round pick. They really need some young guys to step up and be guys. Barnwell did a, or no, Aaron Schatz did a ranking of the best teams in terms of under 25 talent. He had the 49ers 27th. I think that's instructive. Like they're just not a team. They need some of these younger guys to get better. Although a lot of those guys already over 25. What is, what do you think Kyle's going to do while we're still in scheme? Is that where you're looking, something on offense?

1:04:51Jourdan Rodrigue:Well, I was looking at defense because they were 27th in defensive DVOA, and to me, that's the biggest thing. They were, what, offensive DVOA was number two. I know. Kyle doesn't, like, try to be as, like, hey, look at me. And yet, he's just. He does what he does. That's the thing. It's like, you know, I think we've been waiting for a long time, or we say we've been waiting for a long time about, okay, well, when does Christian McCaffrey take less carries and turn more into this, like, pure receiver? They already throw the ball to running backs on 30%, 33 % of their pass plays anyway. So that's like, I don't know how much you even want to increase that because then it takes balance away elsewhere.

1:05:31Jourdan Rodrigue:I think that, again, you're going to just see these guys do what they do. You'll see wrinkles. You'll see motion, different wrinkles. I hope you see more of a mix at running back because I just think that's more sustainable down the stretch. But really what Kyle Shanahan does that is so effective is he takes his elite personnel who happened to be a mixture of personnel and he moves them all around the field. And it just, it has been the bread and butter. It is hard to defend. The quarterback is playing excellent football. When you have that combination, I don't think you need to like think too overcomplicate it.

1:06:06Jourdan Rodrigue:I think you just go do what you do and expect that those guys will perform the way that you're used to. I hate that McCaffrey had 413 touches last year, the most in the NFL, the most he's ever had in his career. I just don't think you can expect the same season, which is why things go wrong if they just look old. It's just a common. That was my thing. I think the roster's solid. I really believe in Purdy. We haven't talked Purdy here. We've talked about him before this offseason. I think he's a top 10 quarterback. But Trent Williams was down a little bit last year, not much. CMC, could he feel the impact of last year?

1:06:39Kittle, Kittle is a pretty big deal at his age. you know Mike Evans I believe in but he is 33 years old Greenlaw Warner Bosa you know that add it all up and like then the secondary could could get fried a little bit in in the back end so that that's to me that if things go wrong with a very tough schedule it goes for the entire

1:06:58Jourdan Rodrigue:division you know I've talked about the defense a lot that's a big my if things go wrong they were a at times a lead weight this this offense put some really interesting things together with two different quarterbacks. Mac Jones played really well. He's still the backup there. To me, they've reshaped their receivers room a little bit, which is really interesting. Now featuring Christian Kirk, who was sort of in and out of practice. He's already hurt and missed some time. That was updated while we were taping calf strain, which is the worst. So that's early. Yeah. So that's terrible. And that kind of we were wondering even if he was going to even make this roster because of some of the other still have Demarcus Robinson on the roster.

1:07:34Jourdan Rodrigue:Dijon Stribling is someone who, you know, the middle round pick, he, your second round pick, he was an example of a team going very scheme dominant in their evaluation and not looking at the consensus board and not looking at all these things. They were literally taking a scheme match player and taking him where they wanted to take him. And that wasn't like Brandon. I kind of reminds me of Brandon. I think when I was coming out, really interesting, really, really interesting player to me. I'm curious to see how he does. They are going to need him to be a factor early on. And it's sort of a rare thing for a rookie receiver to really separate in this system.

1:08:09Jourdan Rodrigue:But if he can, if he can block, if he can, can just sort of be fearless across the middle of the field, they got him running drift routes already out there, which tells me, which tells me something. Cause that's a predominant scheme in that system or predominant concept in that system. I think he's an interesting player to watch for me. You heard some buzz about him after the fact. They need some young players to step up. He is high on the list of possibilities. Floor, ceiling, as we wrap up, they are on my list of teams that can win the Super Bowl, but this is not a big three. To me, it's a pretty big difference between the Rams, Seahawks, and 49ers.

1:08:45So the floor is you miss the playoffs. It's a tough schedule. And very likely, what do I give their chances to win the division? Let's say 15-20 % max. Compared know, compared to the one in three. I mean, no, that's what I'm saying. It's like more like one in six to me. And so that means they're all in the NFC West. Right. So that means you're playing road games in the playoffs. Tough place to be.

1:09:08Jourdan Rodrigue:Yeah. It's interesting to me. They have one, they're one of the highest floor teams. We saw what they, that drop off to backup quarterback when things are going well. Um, I, you know, we saw that they're pretty solid that, you know, they don't have depth, a lot of depth on defense that I feel confident in, but on offense, I feel confident that this team, based on what we saw last year, is going to find a way. So for me, this is a Super Bowl team at best, really, really high floor, even playoff team at their worst. Okay. We got to start writing these down. You can't put everyone in the playoffs, but I hear you.

1:09:40Jourdan Rodrigue:Oh, you can't? Weird. We'll do that right before the season. The Seattle Seahawks will definitely be in the playoffs in our projections. what is bringing you joy about the defending Super Bowl champion Seahawks? I like their offseason. I like hearing, you know, some of these guys kind of go into offseason mode and we get to learn more about their personalities. I like to hear them on podcasts. I really got a really, really like sort of beam of joy listening to Gray Zabel on Chris Long's podcast the other day, just talking about what he learns from other teams, what he learns from players. I think they've got a real like student mentality on offense and defense and special teams in that building coaching staff as well.

1:10:26Jourdan Rodrigue:And that's something that really brings me joy. It's just like listening to him and them in general, talk about their process. Yeah. Cause they're, they're still like a new team. It's a mix of young and old, but a lot of young players like Gray Zabel. Let's listen to him on the green light podcast with Chris Long from Yote house media. Well, first off, Kobe Turner is like my kryptonite right now in the game of football. Like, I don't know what it is. He's just got my number. He just works me every single game. But it's so cool because like I said, as much as you want to like hate the Rams, like they're all really good dudes across the board.

1:11:02Jourdan Rodrigue:And like Kobe, for an instance, is like he's out there and he just smiles. Like he just plays the game for the love of the game. He's what makes the game fun to play against defensive linemen. Zabel has a chance to be one of the most dynamic run blockers. His best reps last year were just absolutely outrageous. This team, kind of like Gray Zabel, it's just like laying in the cut, but it's like sneaky dynamic. That's what's bringing me joy that we have a super duper power led by Sam Darnold. What? In an average offensive line? I like that different team builds can work. Like this is the first defending champion.

1:11:43And I went back through this century that I was really thinking is like really led by defense since the last Seahawks championship. And then you have to go back to the Bucks and Ravens. It's just rare. It's a different team built. And it's not just like, hey, they won one Super Bowl. By the numbers, like DVOA, like that seems a little over its skis, but they had them as one of the five best teams in the last 50 years. Like they were that good. We had two just completely dominant teams last year. One of them was the Seahawks. And I just like the idea that they kind of follow in the steps of their coach.

1:12:22I think that's maybe like why they're a little late in the cut.

1:12:26Jourdan Rodrigue:They really reflect him. But it's just an incredibly talented defense and team in general. It's different than superpowers we've seen lately, which are all just offense, offense, offense, quarterback. Yeah, they're a catalyst. And that is probably the highest compliment I could pay a team or like a team build in general. And they are also forcing people to ask the question this offseason of our defenses back in charge. Like, do they have like the power, the power sword back in their hand? Right. And I think that maybe it's the slightly different framing of the question that's actually accurate is I think it's more possible to build outlier teams that are led by outlier defense.

1:13:07Jourdan Rodrigue:like this when the product of quarterback play has really risen to about medium to very good in the majority of, you know, quarterbacks who are starting full time. So I think that that also helps it make it possible. You can focus your attention on really having this identity like this. It is possible to build an outlier defense that just like kicks doors down and just wrecks people and will keep evolving. Like that's one thing. Defense is hard to predict year over year. we talk about this a lot. You talked about it with Aaron shots. This is not a defense to me that I worry about because, uh, they do reflect the head coach and they did not lose, you know, concerning levels of personnel and they have an identity.

1:13:50Jourdan Rodrigue:And even with Nick and worry, uh, starting the year on pup, which was out of nowhere, the ankle surgery and all of that, that he had this off season. I still think that this is a team that just knows what it's about and has a philosophy, a teaching philosophy as well. And it's just, it's really cool to watch. Could he be the most important non-quarterback, Eamon Worry? Because he does help unlock them not really substituting and changing on defense. And McDonald, I don't know if it was just because he was getting pushed by a reporter. It was Greg Bell in Seattle. But he was very non-committal about Eamon Worry, not just being back for week one, but any time.

1:14:23But it might have just been McDonald not wanting to answer the question. But I do wonder, you know, if they miss a lot of time, they would really miss Nick Eamon Worry. I was thinking about him for most important non-quarterback. He's their personnel neutralizer.

1:14:33Jourdan Rodrigue:Personnel neutralizer. Who do you have? I actually have to Jerry and price on there. I think that because they lost Kenneth Walker, that the thing that about running backs is I know we don't like immediately like gasp and clutch our pearls when running backs changed teams. We did with Saquon Barkley again, outliers. I'm not chasing outliers here, chasing the mean, which is usually you can get somebody else who can come in and affect the team. The thing that does make me concerned. And then also really I'm curious about, I'm not ruling this out at all. Just very curious about it is that while Seattle had the six best explosive play rate on offense last season.

1:15:07Jourdan Rodrigue:And obviously a ton of that was Jackson Smith and Jigba who had, who was phenomenal. They also got a lot of their, uh, you know, tone setting and evening, uh, pace evening explosives out of Kenneth Walker in the run and the pass game. So like I've always done explosive plays as 10 plus, 10 or more plus 10 plus yards run or 20 plus yards pass. And he had the sixth highest explosive play rate among running backs who caught at least 30 passes last season per next gen. And he was, you know, one of the more explosive play creating runners as well in the NFL per next gen. And so I think that when you're looking for another place to get those explosives from, and Seattle was a very explosive dominant offense, you're looking at the run game.

1:15:52Jourdan Rodrigue:You're looking at what Ken Jadarian and Price do. I think he's really, really talented. So I'm excited to see, but this is exactly where I'm looking at is how can we keep this offense moving? We know the defense will sustain. How do we keep this offense staying middle to great as they were all last season? And it was a very inconsistent offense, including in the playoffs. Like it wasn't great in the Super Bowl for the most part. It wasn't great in that 49ers game. Like they weren't great down the stretch. They were up and down. They were, they were quite good the first half of the season. And Donald's talked about that as he still is like mad that he didn't play better in the Super Bowl.

1:16:28It's like, enjoy it, bro. But to your point, yeah, Price didn't profile as like a heavy workload guy. They're using him a lot in the passing game in the early days of practice, but it's going to be him. And right now, George Helani is taking all the first team reps. And so it's going to be maybe Helani and Price at the beginning of the season. Zach Charbonne is coming off a torn Achilles. JSN is my most important non-quarterback.

1:16:51Jourdan Rodrigue:Well-picked. It's because, like, I really don't have any doubts about him, but he's just, he's going to have to be Justin Jefferson, Jamar Chase, like year after year. Like if, if he just continues on this pass, he's going to be a hall of famer. You know, the, the fall off is just big too. Like Rashid Shahid, I think in year two in this system can, can help out. And, you know, we didn't even mention they have a new offensive coordinator and Brian Flory, which is a little bit of a concern. Um, maybe, maybe that's part of your scheme dream here, but either way with Cooper cup and Shahid, it's still a pretty big fall off to like weapon two.

1:17:25So JSN just has to be that dude. What is your scheme dream choice?

1:17:29Jourdan Rodrigue:Yeah, well, something that we didn't mention enough. Well, I say we as in like the ecosystem of media in general, was that how damn good their special teams was. Last season, they were number two in special teams DVOA. They're coached by, surprise, a Harbaugh. Jay Harbaugh is their special teams coordinator. Here's what they do that is different though about it. And it's when you have a defensive-minded and also defensive play-calling head coach, as Mike McDonald is, your tendency is, A, you're not in control at all of the offense, which is where things may, to me, a big question mark is a later part of the conversation.

1:18:09Jourdan Rodrigue:But you can use or you can decide to weaponize your special teams unit as like an extension of what you do on defense and also use it as what you can control as a defensive coordinator on offense. That's exactly what they did. It wasn't just that their field goal unit was great and Michael Dixon had what, like 10 inside the 20 punts, no touchbacks, which is incredible, so consistent in flipping the field for them, but also that they were like really aggressive in their returns, in their coverage, in their field goal unit defense. They were a foot on the gas the entire time. And to me, that is clearly Mike McDonald and Jay Harbaugh deciding to say, we're not just going to make this a neutral phase of our team, like most teams in the NFL still do, especially after the kickoff rule changed.

1:18:57Jourdan Rodrigue:What we're going to do is we're going to use this as an extension of, of our best unit, our best phases on the field, our explosive plays on offense. So this is an extension, the return game, obviously an extension of that. And then our aggression on defense. And that's exactly what they did. That's exactly what this special team won them a Superbowl. It was incredible. I mean, I don't think they win without, It's hard to be elite special teams year after year after year, although some teams have pulled it off. We'll see if the third Harbaugh can do it. I mentioned new offensive coordinator, Brian Flory, the tight ends coach from the 49ers.

1:19:31Make your rival a little worse. I'm not as worried about him as you normally would be. It's a third coordinator in three years under Mike McDonald, which isn't great because the rest of the staff, their run game coordinator, their offensive line coach, they're all still in place. things go wrong if I think the offensive line like their improvement was a little overstated last year and I don't want to get too much into injuries but Charles Cross, Abe Lucas, they've had injuries in the past they're a little weak in the middle with Anthony Bradford they were an inconsistent offense and I think that was a reflection of the running game which was inconsistent which was a reflection of the offensive line for the most part Darnold a little bit has highs and lows too So to me, that's where this goes wrong, is if the offensive line goes from inconsistent to kind of bad.

1:20:23I think there's a route that that happens with tough schedule and that if you're not the 10th offense in the league like last year, if you're suddenly like the 17th, it all gets harder for a defense to carry you.

1:20:36Jourdan Rodrigue:Yeah, I think variance is things go wrong. If the variance, like you sort of have mentioned, dips too low on one side of the ball, they were so consistent in two of the three phases, defense and special teams last year, particularly November onward, when special teams really took off for them with Rashid Shahid on, on the team. To me, if they're very in steps too low on offense, that's when you start to stumble things compound. That's a number of different factors. That could be offensive line. That could be, what does their run game look like? That could be, you know, are the tight ends still playing at this high level?

1:21:09Jourdan Rodrigue:That could be, can they still use all the personnel that they are? Who are there? Can their receivers, Cooper Cup had a nice season, certainly showed up in big spots down the stretch for them. But can they continue to sustain behind JSN? These are all things where if your variance is high, that's a concern to me. You saw some with the offense last year. I don't really have anything else that I would be worried about with them. Yeah. I mean, look, I guess the defense wasn't always great. The Rams smoked them a couple of times. You know, so that's that I guess that's just a very specific. We have to beat the Rams.

1:21:44And ultimately, like our defense lost the battle two straight times at the end of the season. They made the big plays. They won. I just think they just want to be better. They don't want to be giving up 30 points a game to the Rams. But yeah, it's hard to poke holes.

1:21:57Jourdan Rodrigue:We see something a little more bespoke from them in those. And it won't be until late in the season. That's part of the weird schedule. I don't like it. Seahawks Rams are playing two of the final three weeks of the season. So stupid. I know. First games on Christmas. Give me one in November. Right. Yeah. I hate that. They don't love football. The schedule. Ceiling. Yeah. Like I just don't see a world where you don't power rank these two teams. The Rams and the Seahawks is the best two teams in the league. I guess I'm not that creative going into the season. I know it's going to change at some point.

1:22:37There will be some week, obviously, where we don't believe that. But right now, roster schedule, even the biggest Darnold skeptics of us have to admit he's fitting nice and comfortably and then in a good middle of the NFL. So, yeah, the floor, I think, is that, yeah, you're playing on the road in the playoffs because you don't win this division. You know, it's a tough schedule overall. You win 11 games or something like that.

1:23:03Jourdan Rodrigue:you know that you're not like a world beater yeah this is a repeat super bowl champion team at their best uh still a playoff team at their worst okay so now we get to the part though where you have to make a choice i'm assuming and i don't want to assume are you putting the 49ers third and the cardinals fourth yes i am too crazy crazy how that works um we're both like biting our nails I don't know why I didn't think about this before now. It's July 27th. Why did I assign this? I know. Why did I assign this now? I want to wait until it's almost the season. I'll go Rams in the regular season over the Seahawks.

1:23:42That's my choice. You?

1:23:45Jourdan Rodrigue:If the Rams, it's the Miles Garrett trade to me. It's the quarterback and the Miles Garrett trade. And like, let it be known, Seahawks fans, before you come for me, I've been holding it down for Sam Darnold on this particular podcast for quite some time. All right. And I still am. It is the, the trade for the best player in football and a quarterback coming off MVP season for me. So I'd put the Rams at one. It's tough. Seahawks at one. it's tough to repeat, Matthew Stafford. It's tough to repeat, but it's tough to be where the Rams are at too, which is like the highest possible expectations. And yet, you know, you're not coming off that win.

1:24:22That's tough. that's it for the NFC West we did it
