In short

“Best of Iso Takeover Part 1” features NBA players trading stories about their careers, especially point-guard/wing roles, rookie life, team chemistry, and memorable games (including the 2009-2010 Hawks era and the 28-3 Super Bowl comeback). It also includes brief off-court reflections on faith and camaraderie.

Guests (and backgrounds)

Jeff Teague (former Atlanta Hawks point guard; discusses rookie experience, coaching-vet guidance, and league changes). DC Young Fly (comedian/actor; shares Atlanta street/2009-2010 memories and sports talk). DeMarcus Cousins? (not present). Bibby (actually “Bibby/Bibb” appears as guest/participant: former Sacramento Kings guard; discusses Kings chemistry and Lakers/Kings battles). “Smooth” and “Josh” are referenced as teammates/rookies in the Hawks context (likely additional participants).

Key claims

The league is now guard-heavy with few true post players. Rookie point guard is hardest due to pace, reads, and managing grown-men teammates. Kings’ success came from genuine liking/chemistry and competition in practice.

Notable examples

Hawks nightlife routine; being assigned to carry backpacks/rookie routines; Paul George cooking a wing matchup; 28-3 Patriots comeback; Kings vs Lakers battles; Bibby’s screen-setting praise.

2:46Hey, y 'all take me back, bro. Take me back to 2009, 2010, bro. When we were running through the ATL streets, T. What? Oh, man. That was the best time of my life, bro. I met y 'all boys, man. Y 'all changed my life, bro. I was just a little green kid from Indiana, bro. I ain't know nothing. I get on the Hawks, boy. I ain't know nothing. These boys got me buying a Challenger type of stuff. Man, I tell the story. One night we got in, it had to be about 2, 3 in the morning. And me, you, and Josh had a challenger. And we was on the freeway racing. I'm the only one that got pulled over. And y 'all ass kept going.

3:26I said, man, listen, I went on and pulled over because I don't want no problem. He let me go any damn way. So, you know, cool. But, hey, hey, them were some good times, bro. Them were some good times. Man, the best time. You know, I hate it. You know, it had to end the way it did. But I always say it's the house that Dominique built. Hell, me, Josh, and T, we put a little stucco. You know, we put some new lighting, you know, some new siding in there. Trey came in and renovated that thing. You know what I'm talking about? I think Jalen Johnson got a chance to redo the whole thing, bro. I'm just going to keep it 100, bro.

3:58I think this Hawks team is going to surprise a lot of people. Obviously, defensively, we can guard. We just got to be able to score and rebound. I just think the size. As much as I like the Fleming's kid from Houston, I love him from a point guard perspective. But we do need a little more beef down there, bro, to help them boys out. Because that's really what hurt us against the Knicks. I don't know. I've seen that they had a trade-in for, like, people been talking about Jared Allen. If we can get Jared Allen. Oh, man. I'll take that. What? Y 'all think? Hold on, hold on. Y 'all think Cleveland going to get rid of?

4:32Nah. I mean, they got to get out of that second apron, though. They going to have to. Yeah. They got the most money around. Yeah, the facts, because they one of the top ones, ain't they, Jeff? Yeah, they got that one of the highest payrolls for sure. And Donovan Mitchell, he ain't holding back on nobody. He just got that new extension. He ain't playing around. He said, I put a ring on it, too. I got it. You feel me? I got to lock that thing in, bro. I need that. I need that. Oh, yeah. I need that. Hey, the NBA has definitely, the landscape of the league has changed, bro. You know, you look at from how the game is played now, it ain't no post players no more.

5:11You know, you probably got three post players, for real, for real, NB, Jokic, hell, who else? So I said they copied the basement. It really ain't no post players. It's not, bro. It's not. The game has changed, man. And, hey, the way they getting up and down the floor, scoring these points, it's a guard-heavy league. Boy, I wish I was just 10 years younger, but I ain't had to pass the ball to you niggas. I mean, you guys. Hey, you know, my show a little different. My show a little different. Hey, you know, timing was a little different. You know, you got thrust into that, but you held your own, bro.

5:55But yeah, we needed that peak tee. That tee when y 'all was out here running the Eastern Conference. You know what I mean? Yeah, that's the one. I ain't going to lie, I was too young, bro. I was too young. I ain't going to lie. Y 'all was already a seasoned team, bro. Y 'all just came off that playoff matchup with Boston. Y 'all was already kind of heading towards the right way. Y 'all needed Bigby. Y 'all needed Kurt Heimer. I wasn't ready. But, boy, when we got D-Roll, I was like, I can't stay with this young boy. I can't stay with him either, but I can fake it. Yeah, you had to get on your horses, boy.

6:29Yeah, what? It's a big difference. I think the point guard spot, bro, I watched my guy Darius Acuff play for the Sacramento. You know, you're going to have your lumps and bruises at that position because that's the hardest position to come into the league and play because you're going to come in and you're going to have your two guard, like Zach Levine, who's been in the league for quite some time. Now you've got to try to figure out how you can get yours off and how you get these other guys involved as well. It's similar to the quarterback in football. You know what I mean? Like you've got to know how to distribute.

7:01You got to know, you got to go through your reads. You got to be able to pick stuff up a lot faster than a guy who's not a point guard or a quarterback. So that point guard position hard, bro, especially when you come in and you ain't played the whole first round team. And then, damn, you run into that. You got to guard the MVP. Like, I get it, bro. I get it. I know that was challenging. It was challenging. But the hardest part is, like, realizing that y 'all are grown men. Like, I just came from everybody 19, 18 on my college team. and I come to the team with y 'all, y 'all 28, 30, Mary got kids.

7:35I'm trying to leave. I'm trying to tell y 'all what to do. Y 'all like, hey, boy, swing it over here. I ain't worried about nothing they talking about. You know, I didn't know about contracts and all that stuff. As a young boy, you don't know none of that stuff. Hey, but that's why I heard you say it before. That's why it's great to have ex-vets on the coaching staff. You know, T, you had Nick Van Exel. When I was a rookie, I had Lester Conner. And they would tell you straight up, hey, look, bro. Lester Conner told me, he said, hey, man, you need to be in the bed by noon. I mean, by 12 o 'clock midnight.

8:12You know what I mean? You don't need to be out all night. You need to eat this way. You need to eat that way. You need to get to the gym. If we got practice at 12 noon, you need to be there at 10 o 'clock, getting your work in. By the time them dudes get there, the vets, hell, you done already worked out twice. You just ready for practice. So it's little stuff like that. Like, even from him, because y 'all know, hell, y 'all played on the Lester Conner with me here in Atlanta. Man, listen, the man would call me to his house at night, bro. His wife would cook and, like, you know, just teaching me certain things to eat.

8:42Yeah, no, don't put too much, not too much mayo, not too much ketchup, you know. It's just little things like that that as a professional athlete, bro, you appreciate because, man, you come in, you be so green. You don't know. you just so happy that you made it to the league. And you're like, shh, I'm finna put on. I'm finna put on. Man, listen, you got to fall in line, bro. You got to figure it out. That's the hardest part. That's the hardest part about being a pro. Yeah, I understand that. I know that was tough for you, though, Josh. Coming out of high school? I couldn't imagine, boy. Now, hold on, hold on.

9:16Not just coming out of high school, but, Smooth, you got drafted to the Hawks. You from here, bro. Yeah. Like, tell us, like, real talk, tell us how that first year was. And then, because I know, I think y 'all only won 13 games your rookie year. 13 games. What they were hitting on, bro? What that was like, real talk? It was, boy, that was a hard time, boy, as a rookie. Because, you know, you thinking, like, whatever situation you stepping into, you thinking, like, this has to be the scenario for everybody. You know what I'm saying? So I'm thinking like every ownership, every team is getting treated like how we're getting treated.

9:57So I'm like, I'm just a deer in head. I had Antoine Walker. He was probably the best, the coolest vet. But we had like Kenny Anderson and Kevin Willis. So they used to get into it all the time, bro. So then you had Al Harrington, but he was like on his deal. So he really wasn't trying to, he really wasn't, he really wasn't messing with me like that. Man, you in my way, I ain't got nothing to tell you. You know what I'm saying? I'm like five, he's like six years, seven years in. He like, man, I'm still in the league, bro. I ain't got nothing to tell you. Yeah. And so I used to kind of like lean on Antoine because like Kevin, like Kevin Willis just wanted to give me like the rookie experience, but he never wanted to do nothing.

10:47Like, I remember I was coming in with a nasty number from number 42. I was coming in with a nasty number. I would get my little AAU number. That shit was nasty as hell that I think about it. But they was like, we going to sign Kevin Willis. Can you change jerseys? I'm like, all right, I just picked five. I was like, man, just give me five. It was for, like, no reason. I just threw a number out there. Yeah. So that's how it worked. And then when he came in, they was like, people was telling me how, oh, man, they going to, you know, the veterans show love when you get your jersey up. They going to get you some money.

11:24It's that the third. I'm like, all right, cool. All right, man. I'm rubbing my hands together. You know what I mean? I see him. What up, young fella? He coming in, just messing with me the whole time I'm in there. I'm like, all right, bro. I guess I'm getting the rookie haze from him. So I used to stay connected to Antoine whenever the chance I got. he the one who showed kind of everything though you know what I'm saying he was a real one though now listen you know Twan and Kenny Anderson they were my best when I was a rookie in Boston see that's what I'm saying these kids it's like training day with them type niggas you know what I'm saying hey hold up T did you have to carry the backpack when you was a rookie nah y 'all know y 'all popcorn my car y 'all did all that stuff to me, man.

12:15Yeah, because he ain't want to carry the backpack. He ain't want to carry the backpack. That's why he ain't. He ain't want to carry the backpack. He ain't want to carry the backpack. You know what I'm saying? I carry the backpack. You know what I'm saying? Swank used to have some dust in there, Jack. Hey, I know that feeling, boy, because I had two other rookies with me, Joe Forte and Kedric Brown. Hell, we all had to carry backpacks. Not only backpacks, we had to get coffee in the morning, donuts. I'm talking about these dudes wasn't even eating this stuff, drinking none of this stuff. Oh, I know.

12:46Oh, trust me, I know. Oh, I know. Oh, you had to make a few store runs. I had to get Krispy Kreme every morning. I left them in my locker. I put them at the top. They was green. I remember Smooth finally opened one up. They was green because I just kept recycling them. I'm like, they don't even eat them. We had some hell of a time, bro. Hey, I think about those times. You know, it was always something going on. I always tell people, bro, I say, listen, hell, they always talking about, man, why the Atlanta Hawks ain't never won no championship? I said, hell, man, something going on every damn night.

13:24Soon we leave the arena. Listen, we go right up the street, hit Lucky Lounge. We probably go to the comedy spot. Before we hit the spot, it might be a concert. It might be a concert one night. Somebody may have a big party. Man, shit, what's something going on? It was something jumping in. We was on the floor of the chair, but it's time to the owners was trying to go low budget on the coaches. What'd you say? It was like, take it, who got this 1.5 high? I'm taking it. You know what I'm saying? Hey, they folks ain't give us a chance on that. Let's keep it 100 now. We was blessing new coaches and stuff now.

14:00Guys had their first coaches careers off the letter of the Hawks. Now don't do that. We ain't had no poppin' music. You know what I'm saying? I remember one time we went out, man. I went to, I knew the schedule to go out because y 'all know I wasn't playing. So I knew who to go with on Wednesday. Who was going to. Joe ain't answering that phone after the game. Joe ain't answering that phone after the game. Nah, you know he ain't answering the phone. He gonna tell you where he going. He not answering that phone. Yeah, he be like, just meet me there. He ain't gonna answer the phone. He gonna tell you, he gonna tell you, he gonna tell you, we gonna do this and that right after the game.

14:32And then, then don't answer that thing. Hey, don't do that because we was in there. You used to get there I used to just wait by the door Yeah cause I know Cause he told me where to go now If it was If it was something going on Damn it We was there I'm talking about We was there You hear me I don't care what it was We went to the club at 10 We opened the club up And listened to No Hands For two hours We Hey hold on We had just left like a concert Or something Yeah we was the first one In the spot That Roscoe Dash Come on That No Hands Boy we were Hey We was in there for two hours before somebody got in there.

15:10Oh, yeah. You got the time, man. Oh, yeah. Hey, Teague, but before you got to the A, bro, we would lean with it, rock with it. We were doing all that in the spot. I'm mad I wasn't there. I had hurt. I remember they tried to send me to the G League one day. Y 'all was going to Miami. Y 'all was like, boy, you got to go to the G League? I was like, yeah. I was like, dang, we're going to Miami. I was like, I beg Rick's son. and I was like, please don't let me go. I begged you. I was like, please, man. I don't think I would get better down there. Hey. That was crazy. After that, they said it's time out for the foolery.

15:48They went and hired that other man, and he came in. He started with me. You got me up out of here. Got Marv up out of here. Next thing you got to know is that things weren't the same, man. It wasn't the same at all, boy. It wasn't the same. Y 'all left. I was ready to get on up out of here. Hey, Smoot, hold on. So when you went to Detroit, tell me something. Because you went over there and you played the three. And you had been playing pretty much the four with us. I'm saying that's what they were telling you before you came over there? Nah, man. When I signed the contract, they was like, boom, you going to play the three.

16:21I'm like, huh? I'm like, nah. Like, nah, bro. You know what I mean? I've been playing the four for nine years. Like, I done got accustomed to that position. Like, just bring one of us up. Like, if you just sign me, just bring Greg drumming off the bench, one of them, you know what I'm saying? Because both of them kind of similar games, they just, you know, well, drumming, I mean, Greg was more of a post-up player. But, like, as far as, like, just down low scoring, like, they were more, like, down there in the paint. I was, like, more perimeter-based, and I could be more versatile, like, guarding people.

16:55So I'm, like, just, they're like, nah, we're going to play all three of y 'all together. I'm like, man, somebody getting fired, bro. It's like somebody's not going to work, bro. It's not going to work. So I got the weight down, and you know what I'm saying? I started figuring out the position probably like a month into the season because, you know, it's a different position playing the three from the four. Yeah, yeah. He was chasing guys around screens and running through pick and rolls. Hey, that's the scores position. The 2-3 in the league. Man, Paul George cooked me, bro. The first game of the season.

17:33But he told me, he just got the 90 ball. He was like, yeah, that's why y 'all gave me the 90. It ain't nothing I can do, though. You know what I'm saying? I'm fighting through screens, contesting. But I was so mad, bro. The next time we played him, I wore his ass out, though. I was like, bro, I can't pay T, bro. Like, they just had me bad, bro. I had marked the calendar. I'm like, bro, wait till we play Indiana again. Oh, yeah. He just got paid, man. He went slap off. When y 'all boys left, man, it wasn't the same, dog. But it was a little better for you, though. I see you went ham out there. Yeah, I got the ball.

18:13It was a little different. But we ain't go out. I was still trying to hold on to the memories, bro. I'm going out by myself. I've invited people. Ain't nobody showing up. it was just different bro I can imagine bro but listen y 'all brought some y 'all brought some love to the city bro what y 'all made it Jeff to the Eastern Conference yeah we went up y 'all playing against their Cleveland team with Bron Kyrie we went once we got swept though so damn hey where y 'all be shooting at T where y 'all be shooting the 520 at we got a studio in where Indianapolis oh yeah yeah why you gonna come to the studio man yeah man I'll pull up on y 'all bro we used to shoot at my crib I don't shoot there no more though Smooth came to the crib came to the crib hey I'll come there man I'll do some yoga with y 'all man y 'all come do some yoga with me hey yeah matter of fact last time I'm glad you said that hold on Smooth last time we came to the letter we came for Joe yeah you remember that that's why y 'all had to sub me in We done talked about this and got over this already, fella.

22:33I sit down with musicians from all musical styles to play songs together in an intimate setting. Every episode's a little different, but it all involves music and conversation with some of my favorite musicians. Over the past two seasons, I've had special guests like Dave Grohl, Leve, Mavis Staples, Remy Wolfe, Jeff Tweedy, really too many to name. And this season I've sat down with Joshua Homme, Sarah McLachlan, John Legend, and more. Check out my new episode with Phineas. So I went home and I asked Billie if she wanted to sing it. She immediately made it her own thing. No fair

23:14You really know how to make me cry When you give me those oceans So come hang out with us in the studio and listen to Playing Along on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. 25:12I ain't, I can't be up there. Then you on third level. Six five catching the Holy Ghost. I was fake trying to kiss you, man. I can't do that, man. You gotta chill. You gotta chill. I used to be sitting in the back, man. You know what I mean? I used to be back there laughing. You know what I mean? You know what I mean? You know what I mean? Kissing the homeless girls. They be there for the taping. They see y 'all. Man, I... Hey, hey. The same way over here, bro. I grew up Baptist. Yes, sir. I'll never forget, boy. Hey. Hey, Ribbon Payne. You hear me? Smooth. Smooth. D.C., I ain't gonna lie to you.

25:43You know, my grandma made me get in the choir. That's just what it was. You know what I mean? You had to join the festivities. He didn't do nothing until you was a deacon.

25:54I'm like, I'm 11. What am I planning on speaking to you? Man, I'm in here training to be a deacon. Hey, facts. Hey, facts, boy. Until you've been a deacon and you had to get up in that choir and you had to get up there on Easter Sunday and say that Easter Sunday speak, Boy, you ain't done nothing. Don't talk to me about it. That's the hardest thing I had to do in life. I'm glad when I turned 14. I couldn't do it, but you were strong. You was a strong one for that one, Joe. Hey, bud. I had to get my ass whooped. I was cool with the whooping, man. Did y 'all ever play for the church league? Did y 'all ever play for the church league?

26:33Yeah, I did. I did, too. I did, yeah. No cussing. Hey, listen. You know, when we were young, when we were coming up, bro, any league that we could play and say, it ain't like today. all these kids got trainers and all that. You know what I mean? You see everybody got a trainer now. All we did was hoop. So if the church league was jumping, we were playing in the church league. On Sunday, they hooping up at the court. We going to play at the court with the fellas. You know what I mean? Anywhere they was hooping, that's how we got better, D.C. I'm going to be real. I thought I was y 'all in my head, bro.

27:04I really... I ain't going to lie. If I put... I can do whatever I put my mind to. But I realized when I go see y 'all play, I'm like no nigga that was not what you was supposed to be doing like y 'all is great like y 'all gotta it's a certain physique of an NBA player we're like bro I ain't get no growth for it I was like 19 yeah what do you mean I was 5 '4 until I was like 19 I'm 6 '1 I'm 6 '1 smooth when did you know you really had a chance bro to make it to the league I'm saying, like, that was the plan the entire time. I was just trying to play basketball. You know what I mean? I'm saying even, like, in junior high and all that?

27:50I didn't know. I had no idea. You know what I'm saying? Then now you get older, you be like, okay, I see why my dad did this. Like, he quit his job. When I was in high school, he was at home a little more. You know what I'm saying? Yeah. Yeah, he knew. Like, now I know, like, man, I got to stay close to this little nigga. So I'm like, shit, okay, cool. I got, I ain't understand it until like my senior high school. My dad gave me a little talk, you know what I'm saying? Because I still was thinking about going to college. I was talking about going to Indiana and all that. He was like, bro, we ain't doing that.

28:26We ain't doing that. Hey, hey, hey. You're my 230. You going to the EG? Boy, hey, I love Pete, boy. Hey, we might have to get old school on him. We might have to get Pete on him. Hey, that's real Atlanta right there, DJ. I don't know if you remember that job dating, bro. Hey. He play, he from Albany, but you know, we was over there at Ben Hill. You know what I'm saying? He played from Ben Hill. You know what I'm saying? On that west side? That west side? Yeah, that's why I started playing, you know what I'm saying, basketball over there at Ben Hill. That's why you got good, good. Coach Walker, you know what I'm saying?

28:58Yeah, yeah. Yeah, man, started where it really, yeah, with the real pros happening. Yeah, that's how Ben Hill where it really, yes, sir. Yes, sir. That's how you learn how to play, bro. You know how you put the court together? Yes, sir. Yes, sir. They had that back in the day. You know what I'm talking about? They had that one. Hey, but that's how you learned, bro, when we was kids, bro. We just played. We just played the game. DC, what you played coming up, bro? What sport you played? I played baseball all the way to the end. That's how I know I'm real good at that. I played everything, baseball, football, basketball.

29:36But baseball, for sure, for sure. I know. I talk a lot of shit about everything else, but baseball for sure. I can back that up all day every day. Yeah. Spoon, you played any other sports? No. Straight basketball. I tried to throw the helmet on. My dad was not playing. He wasn't going for it. I want to play football. He was like, but hell no. He went on the road because he drove trucks. I slid over there to my mama. Mom got there signed me up. So when he came home, he seen the pads on the ground where he gave it to me, boy. He cuts my school down. No. He's like, it ain't buying your dumb ass no cleats.

30:18You got to play on my white collar, talking to him when I was going, but he was hot, boy. He was hot, boy. He was hot. I was out there slipping and sliding, and I was like, man, you know what, man? I ain't playing no more, man. I know. Oh, yeah, I already know. Hey, speaking of football, Speaking of football, what's up, y 'all Falcons fans? What's up? Absolutely. Keep it a bean. Keep it a bean. I got to take a drink. I'm a pain freak. He finna tell a lie if he got to take a drink. I need to take me a drink too, bro. What's up? What's going on, Smooth? We pain freaks, bro. I mean, I'm in Atlanta everything.

31:00Braves. That's what I'm saying. I'm in Atlanta everything. You know what I'm saying? They owe me, man. They owe me too. They owe me a couple times. They owe me from that situation. What? They owe me from that too. We ain't even recovered from that. No, no. I'm talking even if, no. That was the one, bro. He had the city of so much on fire, bro. Oh, my God. I don't think people, listen to me. I ain't seen a lot of people play. I ain't never seen it like that. I ain't really get a chance to see Jordan play. I saw AI at the end. Bro, we ain't even had a TV like that, bro. My folks ain't even watching shit.

31:34You feel me? We wasn't going to no games, bro. I actually got a chance to see it. I used to hear stories. We used to sit down and watch this nigga as a family. Listen, bro. I'm in high school. It was the greatest thing we ever had, bro. Yeah. I ain't seen nothing like it. Yeah. You feel me? Hey, listen. Super Bowl, we needed that. Man, man. Listen. I ain't got over it. You was a 20-83-2, man. I was in China, bro. I ain't got over it. I ain't got over it. I ain't gonna lie down. I remember exactly who I was, but that was crazy, bro. I remember it, too. Let me tell you something. Let me break it down for you.

32:16I was talking so much shit about everything. Let me tell you something. This is why I'm so mad, bro, because them niggas could have whooped my ass in there, bro. Them niggas were like, 40-D, I'm in there saying, boy, you know me. It's ATL. Yeah, yeah. It's ATL shouting. Yeah. It's all that. And we playing the Patriots. I'm doing all that. Bruh, it's three of 28-3. Nigga, I'm talking so much cash money. I'm like, you know what? I'm finna go take a smoke break. I'm chilling. We won this, nigga. By third quarter, my energy change. By fourth quarter, I remember this shit like it was yesterday. We done transferred to go watch the game.

32:59Now I'm at a whole other nigga house. But I'm glued to the TV though, Jay. I'm like... We down. It's four minutes now. Listen, when he caught that, when he caught the ball on his helmet, my heart started being fast as... Listen, because I knew something was up. I said, I know they not about to do this shit. I know they not about to do this. Man, them folks scored a game game. And the score was still 28. them folk came all the way back from three point all we had to do was score one 10 down and we stopped doing everything we were doing in the first quarter that's why I love the Falcons but y 'all rubbed my heart out of my chair then boy hey y 'all know I know man I apologize bro they built that Mercedes that beautiful stadium right after that thinking they were going to make it right back you know what I mean I ain't trying to rub it in on y 'all.

33:59I'm just saying, bro. I like going to the game. Hold on. What are you, though? Can I ask you? I'm a cowboy fan. I ain't going to lie to y 'all. I'm a cowboy fan. I'm a cowboy fan. You ain't a cowboy fan, folks. See how you say that?

34:16Listen, DC. Hey, I'm from. DC, you're a cowboy. Cowboy, yes. Yeah, I'm from Little Rock, bro. So, you know. Hey, man. man. The closest thing to us is Dallas, bro. I've been a Cowboy fan. I was born in it. You know what I'm saying? I understand that. I was born in it, man. So listen, I don't know if we play the Falcon this year, but if we do, man, me, you, and Smug can put a little something on it, you know? Oh, absolutely. I don't mind. Oh, you talking about on the Falcons? Yeah, you going to bet? I know you going to bet. We got to get our quarterback situation together.

34:55Hold on. Hold on. Hold on You don't think they gonna Oh man Why y 'all keep doing this We have this same conversation Every year Do you think we No No I'm gonna tell you When I'm telling you What we gonna have to do is First of all We gotta stop I don't know what's our quarterback status now. That's what I'm trying to figure out. Previous. We are giving guaranteed money to injured players who was already injured coming off the injury list. Let me tell you something. We ain't had a quarterback to finish a season. So let that sink in. And we got guaranteed money. Amen. So, who money is that? I'm not finna keep doing that.

35:57I'm finna go watch these hoax. And y 'all gonna have to tell me about it later. Hey, hey, hold on, hold on. Speaking of that, we got a video I want to show, man. You jumped out with a trampoline. Come on, baby. Bounce. Come on, baby. Hold on, here we go. Hey, y 'all check DC out right here. Yeet!

36:22I missed the first one. I had to time it. Hey, DC, tell the truth. It's a lot harder than what people think, though, ain't it? Hey, people don't understand. First of all, you ain't, you, you. That's a lot of pressure. It's pressure. That's what I feel, bro. People watch it. People act like they ain't watch it, but they watch it. You almost 15, 20 feet away from the gold, bro. You hear me? You ain't no. So when them boy be doing them flips, you got to respect that. You feel me? I missed the first one. I had to time it. But once I got it, I was up. Yeah, yeah.

36:55Hey, hey, hey, when y 'all think about those times, you know, Bill, before we traded for you to come to the Hawks, bro, you know, me being a huge fan of your game, obviously, Arizona, and everything that you did in Sacramento, when you think about those Sacramento teams that you played on, bro, early in your career, what you think made those teams so special, Bill? I mean, obviously, the chemistry y 'all had and, you know, your high IQ for the game, the way y 'all passed the ball, the way y 'all made the game easier for one another. What do you think? What was so special about those Kings? We genuinely liked each other.

37:29You know what I mean? So that's why I tried to bring when I came to Atlanta. Like, even, like, we'd gamble on the plane. You know, we'd fuck around on the plane. We'd, you know, go to dinner and stuff like that. I just wanted to make sure everybody would hang out with each other and really liked each other. You know, like, us going to the mall. Like, come on, everybody put your shit down. but let's go to the mall. We're going to hang out. Everybody just shoot the shit in a little bit. But that was the thing. Like, like we competed though. Like when practice that second squad that we used to have, like a Scott Pollard, Bobby Jackson, Hito Turkoglu, they used to beat our ass in practice.

38:03You know what I mean? And so that used to get us ready as far as like, okay, shit. We know that like once, if we don't have, if we don't start out good with Howard plays, we knew where it was the alpha dog on the team. We just knew coming in, like we just had to make sure we show up when when he needed us yeah hey man it was fun watching you guys it was fun playing against y 'all i'll never forget bro i mean from c webb to vlade divas to doug christie those guys were hell of a passers and iq through the roof and then you add you to that mix bro y 'all was just a hell of a team think about those legendary kings versus versus Lakers battles.

38:42Tell us a little bit about those battles, bro. Knowing what we know now, you know what I'm saying? Smooth, knowing the history of the game, y 'all may have been robbed a little bit. A little bit. Do you honestly, hold on, hold on, hold on. Do you honestly think it was really? Hell yeah. You seen that shit? Man, look, that's a whole, that could change my whole, that could have changed my whole career. You know what I'm saying? I was rolling at that point. Now, what if it looks like if I get, if we go to the finals, I get finals MVP. That's going to look a whole lot better on my resume than the shit I got now.

39:18Oh, no. Listen, Bibb, I ain't going to lie to you. Y 'all probably should have had one, boy. No, no, no, no, because y 'all had a whip. Y 'all had a whip. I'm talking about, man, listen, I didn't think nobody could beat that Lakers, Kobe, and Shaq. But, bruh, when I tell y 'all push them to the brink, obviously, under certain circumstances, maybe y 'all would have won it. but man that was a pleasure to watch you know what i mean because i was a young book i was just coming into the league in oh one bro you know that was everything to me to see great great basketball like that played at the highest level just to be a part just to be a part of that i think shaq's the biggest the best big man to ever play the game you know coby is top two for me um just to be in those battles and going to la and seeing all those movie stars and the guys that you look up to you know in the movies coming and cheering against you knowing we had them beat I mean, I couldn't ask for nothing else, man.

40:09But, like, I want to pump you guys up a little bit, too. You know what I mean? Coming to you guys, I mean, it was probably the easiest games that I have had to play. You know what I mean? Like, they always talk about my defense, how bad my defense was. But, shit, I didn't have to be good. You know what I mean? I got smooth back there. You know what I mean? So that blocked out a lot of stuff. And, like, send screens for you, Joe. A lot of these guys, a lot of these point guards, I said the best. I thought I used to set the best screens. Oh, hold up, Bibby, Bibby, Bibby, hold up. I've never in life, even playing with Nash, Marbury, Kenny Anderson, I played with some greats.

40:45Boy, ain't nobody set no screen how you set a screen. You hear me? That boy ain't nothing but chess over there. Boy, do it so smooth. What's wrong with the boy? All chess. All chess. That boy all chess. He don't do nothing but bitch press when he go in the gym. Now, he in the weight room. Ain't going to lie. But build like a cornerback. Hey, hey, he in the weight room, and that boy gonna sit a mean screen. I ain't gonna lie to you. That shit, no one ever wanted to switch. You know what I mean? I always had a little guy. So I set a screen and he did not want none of you, Joe. Joe would have a wide open jump shot and whatever.

41:21I mean, even with smoothness. I mean, even playing with you guys, man, it kind of changed my game too. It's like I looked up and Atlanta and Sacramento are the two best places that I've been, the two best teams that I played on. You know, like, I still talk to you guys. I still, you know, talk to Jamal when I see him. I saw AC Law a couple weekends ago. Hold on, hold on, hold on. That's saying a lot, bro. You played with the Heat with D-Wade and Braun. You went to New York. Look, man. You giving us love like that, bro? Yeah, I mean, that's the, I mean, being there and being with you guys, like, the most fun I had, like, as far as being on the court and playing basketball, like, that's the way I wanted to play.

41:57I got out, I was just all fast break. I mean, I could, you could look at the highlights of me and Smooth. I was throwing that bitch from anywhere. I just took it. I just threw that shit up. I was going to get it. And like playing with you, Joe, just know a guy is going to get it. And all I had to do was go find an open spot because they're going to double team you. You know what I mean? And I was like, shit, I just got knocked down the shots. I want to say, I remember, Smooth, remember that bet we had? Remember, I said, Smooth, not to shoot 10 threes all season. Remember? We were just talking about that with Jeff the other day.

42:29Yeah, yeah. I think I shot about a six of them. Remember I was supposed to be an all-star game? Yeah, you should have been an all-star. He came there, I was like, dude, that wasn't the three. I didn't shoot the three. I said, smooth. I ain't keeping stats. You don't see this thing after the game. He's like, I didn't shoot no three. You guys didn't shoot no three. We had the most fun there, man, being there, being with you guys. And like Joe, I'm the only one that could stop you. I don't remember if you remember. Oh, man. Hold on, hold on. So right before the game, right before the buzzer by the sign, starting lineup probably by the last five to six minutes.

43:02Me and Bill play one-on-one. Every game, we used to play one-on-one. Joe, hold on a second. My son just came in here. Look. Hey, what's up, bro? Hey, what's up, bro? Man, I remember when you was a little G, bro. How y 'all doing, man? Y 'all good? Hey, we good, man. Good to see you, bro. Keep doing your thing. I know you out there with problems. I appreciate that, man. Y 'all good to see y 'all, too. Yes, sir. Good to see you, too. Go tell our story, Joe. I used to lock. I'm the only person that can lock you up. So, me and Bibb used to play one-on-one before every game, bro. And it's like, you know, good, honest defense.

43:39He think he's the only one who used to lock me up. But we used to have some good battles, though, Bibb. Hey, because you know what? That shit used to get me going before the game. You know what I mean? It gets your juices flowing a little bit. You couldn't block shots, though. You couldn't. The rule was you couldn't block the shots, and you couldn't do anything. I used to hit him in the top of his head. We just played in the victory. Remember the big three? I was fucking, y 'all, okay. I was like, let me guard him. I can guard him. I'm over there wrapping his arm and catching him and pulling his air, bear.

44:07Hey, hey, hey, Chad, he talking about when we played in the big three, and he was playing with the ghost ball and talking about let him guard me. Hell, hey, hey, Shmoo. Hey, Shmoo, I was handing out buckets like they was skilled or whatever, man. Hey, man. You have something. You have something. He was killing him out there. I'm the only one that can stop him, man. I'm the only one that can stop him. hey listen hey we had a hell of a time here bro look you know Bill before you got before we traded for you we wasn't in the playoffs yet that year we end up making the AC with you and we end up playing against the Boston Celtics and we all know how that historic series we couldn't we wasn't competing worth a damn in Boston but in Atlanta but that ass couldn't get no dub over here you hear me at least we at least we had home now Hey, hold on.

44:56Smooth. Smooth. Bibb, no lie. I've never in my life seen Atlanta rocking like that, bro. Me neither, man. Me neither. And they done had some good teams. Trayden took them to the Eastern Conference Finals. I ain't never seen that building jumping like that. We got the highlight factory moving, man. Man. That was some good times, man. Hey. Oh, it was definitely, definitely. Y 'all pay more, yeah? Oh, man. Come on, bro. Come on. I'm the only one that pay Mo. I'm crazy. Hey, you got to chill. I got to get my money back for Mo. Hey, you got to chill. Hey, we got to send one prayer up, bro, for a good friend of ours, man.

45:43Big J, bro. I know we had some great times with Big J. We had some great fun times. Go ahead, Smooth. Say it again. I said RIP to the big fella. Big R.B. Oh, man. Oh, man. We used to have some great time. I tell Cass all the time how he used to play cards with us two. It used to be me, Bill, Josh, and Big J. And we cracking jokes on each other and everything. And if I had a little shindig at the crib, Big J was the first one to show up, bro. So I actually, not accidentally, but I ran into him at an Atlanta Hawks game last season, bro. I don't know if he had already got diagnosed, but, you know, he didn't say nothing about it.

46:22And me and him sat there and chopped it up for probably about 10 minutes. It was a game. I can't remember what game it was. And I hadn't seen him since, bro. And then when I heard the news, I was like, damn. And it took me back to all those memories we had on the plane, the bus rides. Because at the end of the day, y 'all know, bro, once we stopped playing professional, that's the one thing that you really missed, that camaraderie that you have with a cat, me, Josh. You know, what we talking on the plane, the bus playing cards. And it just made me think back how, man, life is short, bro. But Big J was a great dude.

46:54He was. Real quiet. But who gave him the name Big RV? I think you did. You gave everybody a nickname, bro. Hey, Smooth. Then you said he was a bad influence, bro. Bad influence, man. Man, talk about all them alligator hands. Remember he, Big J, say you should never throw that lotion on. You was getting on his head and skin. and you know you grab the cars like that man yeah yeah yeah yeah they was so they was so dry hey hey that's why I feel crazy hey there was days bro there was a day man we had some fun that's one of the best times I had man like I said like no matter what team I played but I put with you guys and Sacramento up there man it was just fun times it was basketball you know what I mean like when I went to New York that shit my career was over, man.

47:45I didn't want to... I ain't going to lie to you. I was done playing. Woody was like, Mike, come play one more season. I'm like, Woody, I'm done, man. He was like, he's like, just come play. I said, Woody, I am done. So like, when I got there, I had no intention of playing no games. I'm not going to lie to you. So when I got there, I was like, man, I'm working out. Okay, you know, I'm going to try. I was out there trying, but I just didn't have it in me no more. So I was like, in the games, Woody would be like, you want to play today? I was like, nah, Woody, I'm cool. me over here don't feel like you need to play me with i worked out already then you know be some games like four minutes left like you're gonna play yeah put me and let me go here and just run a little bit so i mean i was done already but i mean it wasn't the same as um with you guys and coming there like going to you guys i felt i still like i felt like i had a little bit left in the tank you know i mean coming there and just playing okay i'm the older guy on the team let me try to see if i could rejuvenate these guys and you know get them to play and we kind of got in a fast-paced He's playing.

48:42We just played. I mean, and it showed. Like, it showed just the talents that you guys had. And for me to be like an old wheel to come in and just kind of push you guys along, you know, it made my time. Like I said, that was one of the best times of my career being in Atlanta with y 'all. Yeah, hey, hey, we appreciate that, bro. We had a great time. Not only just playing on the court, but off the court as well. Life was great. The Declaration, which is full of these beautifully rendered sentences and paragraphs about Enlightenment ideals, does also have this darker history to it. Why is it important for the darker part of the Declaration of Independence and the American Revolution? Why is it important that Americans know about it? Well, if we don't understand the full context in which our nation was founded, we won't understand the full context in which our nation now finds itself.

So let's start our days together with a moment of calm, A moment of reflection and meditation. A moment that's just for you. Listen to Waking Up With Ryan on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, I'm Nora Jones, and I love playing music with people so much that my podcast called Playing Along is back.

51:41I sit down with musicians from all musical styles to play songs together in an intimate setting. No fair.

52:22You really know how to make me cry when you give me those oceans. So come hang out with us in the studio and listen to Playing Along on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. As parents, we have a million things running through our minds. Play dates, checkups, laundry, diapers, work, groceries. So it's easy to make a mistake. Oh, I forgot birthday candles. We say we'd never put our kids in danger by leaving them in the car alone. Sit tight, hon. I'll be right back. But temperatures as low as 60 degrees can be deadly for children left behind. So always bring them with you.

52:59And every time you park the car, stop, look, lock. Brought to you by NHTSA and the Ad Council.

53:11Hey, NBA players' Achilles tendon tears are linked to small spikes in playing time, study finds. A recent study found that players log more minutes than their season averages during the 10 to 15 games before their Achilles tendons ruptured. What do you guys think about Achilles tears? Smooth, you tore your Achilles in the big three. Hold on before you get to your story. Jeremy, he tore his Achilles in the big three. Guess who had to wheel him through the airport? Yeah. Look how God worked. Look, I come to the airport. I see Smooth. He's struggling and buckling. He in a wheelchair. I'm like, damn, what's going on?

53:51I said, come on, man. Let me get that man rolling, man. Hey, Smooth, tell us, man. Tell us about that Achilles tendon tear, bro. It's nothing to play with, man. It's no joke. I'm saying, did you feel, before you tore it, did you feel anything? Like, did you feel it getting weak? Did you have any problems a week prior? Or it just, it was normal? No, I didn't. I mean, I think when I dunked the ball, because I haven't did it in a long time, I think it probably put my body in the shot. You know what I'm saying? You know what I mean? Like kind of like, you know, when I was playing the big three, I already had my mind made up on how I was going to play it.

54:31Yeah. I wasn't trying to go 100%. You know what I'm saying? You already know. It's a great league, but, you know, you got to be able to – you don't want to go out like – you don't want to blow a tire like that. Yeah, I really don't. In that type of environment, you know what I'm saying? I would have rather did it in the NBA if I was going to do it, you know what I'm saying? But for me to be able to have a healthy career like that and then go to the big three and then do that, it was kind of like I didn't pick a ball up for a minute. But I don't know, them low shoes. I used to wear like mids and highs.

55:05I don't know. I'm trying to blame all kinds of stuff. Maybe because I had some lows on. I don't know, man. I don't know how it happened. But I pumped faked it and tried to pull off that right, but it failed. I'm saying, did you look back? You thought somebody tripped you like it normally happened? Yeah. When I look back and I ain't see nobody there, I was like, I knew what it was. I just shook my head, man. I was like, I couldn't believe it. Man, listen. When we were playing here for the Atlanta Hawks 2000, this had to be 2009, Jeremy. I was sitting out. I don't know if Smoot remembers this, but they had sent me out for like a week.

55:41smooth. Y 'all went on West Coast trip. I think you had them cut up. You had them balled out West Coast trip. I was here in Atlanta with Wally Blaze getting treatment every day. It was your calf, right? Yeah, it was my calf. My calf was sore. I had a knot. I literally had a knot in my Achilles, in the middle of my Achilles, and Doc told me, he's like, it's going to pop if you keep playing. So they ended up shutting me down, Jeremy. So the team going off. I'm just going to the arena every day just getting treatment. Me and Wally Blaze, and after about two days of treatment, I'm like, Blaze, man, I got to break a sweat, bro.

56:14I ain't broke no sweat. Like, they going to come back off this road trip. You know, they going to throw me back out there. I'm already 35, 40 minutes a night. You know what's going to happen. He was like, because, you know, with that type of injury, Smooth, Jeremy, you can't, it's hard to walk, let alone jog, get on a bike. You can't do none of that. Like, when that thing inflamed, it's a wrap, bro. You know what I mean? So he said, man, you should come try high yoga with me and my wife. I look at him, I'm like, man, I ain't finna do no damn hot yoga. That's exactly what I told him. I'm like, man, I ain't finna do no damn hot yoga.

56:46And boom, I grabbed my bag, Shmoo, I left. His wife called me on the way to the crib. She was like, Joe, I think you should come try the hot yoga. It'll loosen up your quad muscles, take the pressure off your knees. It'll loosen up your hamstring, take the pressure off your low back. It'll loosen up your calf muscles, and it'll take the pressure off your Achilles. So I'm like, all right. She done told me something. Nah, I'm willing to do anything to get back right, get back healthy. Hell, y 'all finna come back off the road smooth. I'm ready to get back out there and get to some action. Right.

57:16Boom. Jerry, am I going now? I meet them up there. We do the hot yoga class, bro. I've never in life sweated this hard in my life, bro. I felt like a totally different person after class. After class, I'm talking about I felt like my movement was better. My body had done opened up. You know what I mean? I ain't here. I still got some aches and pains, but I feel pretty damn good. Boom. Blaze tells me, he said, just meet me at the arena the next day, and we just come follow up with treatment. I said, all right, cool. But I was so geeked. I'm like, man, I'm going back tomorrow because I felt good.

57:48I felt like if I go two days in a row, he was like, no, don't go two days in a row. Just come to the arena and get treatment. I was like, all right, cool. But I still went anyway. I ain't telling. Man, I almost passed out in class because I ain't understand hydration. Hydration. I ain't understand, like, how to hydrate, how to replenish the body. Because hot yoga, although it's a detox and it takes all the bad out, hell, it takes all the good, too. So you have to put the good back in. I ain't understand that early. I'm just going, you know what I mean? I'm getting my little stretch on because I wasn't flexible at all.

58:22I couldn't, like, you know, touch my toes or none of that. And without flexibility, you know, you're bound to get injured. You know what I mean? That's what they kept telling me. So, man, I took a liking in the yoga, bro, for Wally Blaze who hooked me up. But if it wasn't for that, I probably would have had a real major Achilles tear. I'm talking about I literally had a knot in mine. Like, I couldn't even walk in the morning, bro. That's how bad it was. So, hopefully, you know, we don't have no more Achilles tears to, you know, none of our top guys in the league, bro. But it's unfortunate because this is what we talk about, German and Smooth.

58:58You know, these guys take the regular season, they just kind of take it as a joke. Not necessarily as a joke, but they don't really take it that serious. They want to, you know, hurry up and get to the postseason. Well, when we get to the postseason, and you out there going full throttle, and you ain't went full throttle all damn year, that's when we starting to see these tears because every possession is idle at an all-time high. You know what I mean? Like, you playing your hardest. So I can kind of see how these Achilles tears are happening, but I hope they can crack down on it, man. I seen my boy Dame Little.

59:35I see he been in the gym. He look good, man. He look like he getting back in. You seen him, Jeremy? Man, that man in that gym every day, every day working hard. Got to admire him, man. Got to admire him for sure. I do, bro. You know. You feeling so good. I seen him running some 17s like you back in high school. I seen it too, bro. Yeah, bro. And don't sleep on what's going on up there in Portland right now. What you mean? What's going on? What you got? You see what they just did in the first round. You're getting Dame back, and they just made a move. Man, them people. Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on.

1:00:06Hold on. Them people out there doing something. They went and got Ja, Jeremy. They can't keep all them guards. You got School Henderson. You got Drew Holiday. You can't run for them. Something got to change, but what they got up there, they got something up there. They got something, but here's the question. That's a second-round team. for sure. Hold on, hold on, hold on. They got something, but here's a question. Will Jai, as great as he is with the ball in his hand smooth, will Jai be able to play off ball? Because we know Dame can play off ball. Hell, he can catch and shoot with the best of them.

1:00:39That's what I was about to say. We got to see what Jai been doing as far as his floor space. Can he catch and shoot? Can he space the floor like how you said Dame can do? Or like how Drew can do, Drew don't master the art of space on the floor as well. So that's going to be the next evolution, next step of saying that's the only way that this whole thing is going to be able to work. If guys are able to play off ball a little bit, let the other guy kind of like run the offense or be able to get touch paint whenever to be able, you know, make teammates better as well. To kind of take that pressure off a job of other guards.

1:01:21Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, and you know, hey, y 'all both know, man, the point guard position nowadays is at a premium meaning. Man, if you can't score the ball, hell, if you can't shoot the ball, and that's my only concern, Jeremy, when we talk about Portland, Jai three-point percentage has been bad, bro. I think he low 20s, man, if I ain't mistaken. You don't have – Jai was having to take more off the dribble. In Memphis, he ain't had nobody that can get off the ball and handle that ball and create for him. Now you're getting up there to Portland where you got Dane that's going to handle the ball, you got Drew that can handle the ball, and you got Scoop.

1:01:54Whether they bring him off the bench or not, that can also create open shots for him. I'm not saying he's going to go up there and shoot 45%. But when Dane's shooting that ball at the clip he's going to shoot it at, they got to help off somebody, and that's an easier shot for Ja to take his time. And I'm sure he's in the gym because he's got some get back he wants to get, I'm sure. For sure, yeah. I want to see Ja get back to having fun, man, enjoying the game, smiling. and, you know, doing his little celebration antics. But I ain't going to lie to y 'all, bro. I ain't going to lie. I'm a little worried because, you know, it's a lot different when he was in Memphis and he had the ball in his hands every damn possession.

1:02:33So it ain't really that hard, you know, to get in rhythm. Now you in Portland, you're going to have at least two other elite guards next to you, meaning Dame Lillard, Drew Holiday, or School Hensley. You're going to have at least two of them. and I don't know if the rep's going to be enough, bro. I'm going to be honest with you. I don't know if the rep's going to be enough for him to really get in ref form, for him to really kind of get that, gain that confidence back. I hope it is, but if he struggles with shooting the basketball, you know, playing off these guys, it's going to be a lot tougher than what I think people anticipate, bro.

1:03:12I think they got better players around them now. Like Danny has come on. that's exactly what I'm saying you making my point but they make that move they gotta let him be who he is they gotta let him be who he is because if you don't I think he's the only point guard out of all those four that can just touch paint whenever he wants to though I agree he creates a different type of advantage over the rest of those guards because you know you got like Damian Littles coming off of an ACR injury but But even before that, he wasn't really trying to go to the hole and touch paint for real like that. He was doing step-back jump shots and shooting deep threes.

1:03:55Yeah. You know, I think Drew Holiday is more of a set-up guard, but he's getting older. So I don't think, you know, touching paint at will is part of his game anymore. Yeah, yeah. You know, Scoo Henderson, he's another guy that can touch paint as well, but I haven't seen him be an elite playmaker yet. So I would like to see him take the next step of being more of an elite playmaker, you know, because he has the athleticism and the physicality to be able to get in the paint. But I want to see him make his teammates better as well. See how he can see the floor a little bit better. You know what I mean?

1:04:33Hey, I'm with you on this move. Cause he showed me some of that Spurs series and that first round, them first two games in San Antonio. I'm telling you, look, We know the defenders that San Antonio got, they couldn't do nothing with him them first two games, bro. Yeah, that's what confidence do in that moment. When that confidence, that confidence carrying over into next year. No chance. Yeah. But look, though, that's what I'm talking about. Like, damn, Scoot had a great showing in the postseason, but now he coming here, he behind three damn other point guards. Yeah. How he supposed to be able to get ears off?

1:05:05You feel what I'm saying? Yeah. So, I don't know, man. I hope Portland figure it out. Obviously, they got a good problem. Hopefully, you know, all those guys stay healthy. I'm looking forward to a Dame, one of my favorite players to watch. So they're going to be a lot of fun. I'm Mungesha Tegular, and I'm back with a new season of my podcast, Skyline Drive.
