0:30Here's something that should not be as complicated as it is. Getting a racist statue removed. And here's something that should be a whole lot easier than it is. Getting a new one put up in its place. I'm Akilah Hughes, and Rebel Spirit Season 2 is about both of those things.

0:45Shannon Sharpe:As I was watching these statues come down, I was thinking about what it meant that I grew up in a majority Black city, in which there were more homages to enslavers than there were to enslaved people. Listen to Rebel Spirit Season 2 on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. It just came out. Jeremy, what did you just do? You just set yourself up for failure. I've never heard you tell this story. I've never told this story. This must have been tucked deep, deep in the Jeremy Lin file. My name is MC Jin. I'm excited to tell you about Laugh But Not Lease. You've only been parked a short time and it's already 99 degrees in there. Let's not leave children in the backseat while running errands. It only takes a few minutes for their body temperatures to rise. And that could be fatal.

2:45Shannon Sharpe:Miami, Giannis traded in Miami for that package?

2:59Joe Johnson:Wow. What I told you.

3:03Shannon Sharpe:Man, we got to get BP back on here.

3:05Joe Johnson:I can't wait till y 'all say. I can't wait till y 'all say.

3:08Shannon Sharpe:Hey, Ojo, we got to get BP back on here.

3:15Shannon Sharpe:Giannis. So, Chad, did you hear that? Hey, I want y 'all to say. Giannis is traded to the Miami Heat. Giannis and Bobby Porters goes to the Heat. Tyler Hero, Kel Ware, Jaime Harkas. three first round picks, a pick swap, and a second round pick goes to Milwaukee.

3:32Joe Johnson:Hold on. Oh, so Bobby came to Miami too? Yeah. That's why I said we got to get BP back on here, man. I told, remember what Bobby said about when I told him Giannis was coming here?

3:41Shannon Sharpe:Yeah.

3:42Joe Johnson:And little did he know he was a part of it. Huh?

3:46Shannon Sharpe:Okay. Block Shove. The Milwaukee Bucks are trading franchise icon Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis to the Miami Heat. Tyler Hero, Kale Ware, Jaime Jaquez. I can't even pronounce this other guy's name, so I'm not going to butcher it. Three first-round picks, including number 13, one pick swap, and a second-rounder. Sources tell ESPN.

4:20Shannon Sharpe:Well, there you go.

4:38Shannon Sharpe:Somebody says Mitchell Robinson going to the Bulls. Also, they are going to draft Acuff, Trey Getty. We should make the playoffs. This is why this is this. We can buy what we want and compete fast. But you just, I guess, I mean, you just traded for Claxton.

4:58hey Unk yeah

5:00Joe Johnson:I'm still looking to see where that's at

5:03Shannon Sharpe:what that Giannis yeah Shams Shams reported it 58 seconds ago Giannis gonna like that that new deal hey note the taxes nice weather he get to meet me yeah he get to meet you so now okay we got one big domino fall Okay, where does Ja go?

5:26Joe Johnson:Hey, Unc, didn't I tell you I say Pat got one more thing up his sleeve?

5:30Shannon Sharpe:He ain't got nothing to offer. You going to say trade him, Bam? No. Okay, D.

5:37Joe Johnson:Hey, but I just, it's still something up his sleeve. Now give him time.

5:51Shannon Sharpe:Wow. Giannis is gone.

6:01Shannon Sharpe:Get the shiesty.

6:06Shannon Sharpe:Somebody say jaw to Orlando, Ocho. Can't believe Jalen Brown's finals MVP got drafted before Tatum. Top three pick in 2016. Get traded over blowing a 3-1 lead or over that podcast. Cold world. Bro, he, look, I think the thing, is it, considering there's so much smoke, is it a situation, Ocho, where you almost damn near like have to trade JB now? Or you cool bringing him back? Because he already know how y 'all feel about him. Because every time a trade scenario comes up with the Celtics. Is it his name?

6:40Joe Johnson:Well, he's the only person of value to talk about. Who else are we going to talk about trading? We ain't going to talk about nobody else. but if I I mean they're not gonna let him go they understand how important he is and obviously even with JT being a year removed from that Achilles tear him still having you know he was efficient he was good during his time you don't want him to have to leave that team again by himself no no they're not letting him go nowhere

7:10Shannon Sharpe:so you think he stays at least one more year

7:12Joe Johnson:yeah absolutely at least one more at least one more

7:17Shannon Sharpe:who said that that's what they want I don't know I don't see that LeBron and Pat after that man done took his cookies

7:27Joe Johnson:oh back to oh I like that I like that LeBron back to Miami I bet you do with Bobby P and Giannis hold on let me text LeBron Hold on, hold on. Let me text LeBron.

7:48Shannon Sharpe:That bad business. He said he ain't fooling with you.

7:59Shannon Sharpe:I need to invite Rich Paul on here one night.

8:03Joe Johnson:Yeah, tell him, boy, come on.

8:09No.

8:10Shannon Sharpe:Who the point guard? I mean who's the I mean yeah Giannis and Bam okay you got two guys that can protect the paint but who's the point guard LeBron so the question is what y 'all do are y 'all bringing back Norman Powell

8:29Joe Johnson:yes

8:36hey

8:36Joe Johnson:Pat got something up his sleeve I don't want to disclose any more information You know, I've already done more than I should. And once again, I am right, as I am 98 % of the time. I'm going to just leave it at that. Mickey Harrison and Pat Riley have some up their sleeve, and we're going to see if it works.

8:55Shannon Sharpe:According to Shams, Giannis is expected to be traded before the start of the NBA draft Tuesday, with the Celtics and Heat emerging as finalists to land the Bucs superstar. You don't say. The Bucs are not expected to include a third team in the Giannis trade, according to a source, and are focused solely on negotiating with the Celtics and the Heat. Sources told Shams that if traded the two-mirwalking for Giannis, Brown would remain with the Bucs. Ocho, the moment of truth, if you're a betting man, Giannis ends up in Miami or does he end up in Boston?

9:28Joe Johnson:If you're a betting man, I done told you all the past six months where he was going. I don't know how long I've been saying it. I ain't going to tell you who my source is. But again, everything I say, listen, I might tell a joke or two, but I ain't going to lie to you. I said we was going a long time ago. You know, y 'all laughed it off. Y 'all ain't believe me. But I told you he's down here looking for houses. Boom. Now it comes down to it. And listen, Giannis, Tatum, and Jalen Brown, that ain't happening. We know that's not happening. No. He going to be in Miami. You know, Pat Riley got something else on his sleeve.

10:02Joe Johnson:obviously when Giannis get here he got one more move he's trying to make we'll see if that comes into fruition so we can compete in the East we don't want to be decoration we want to be playing not in the playing but being a seed

10:19Shannon Sharpe:clearly Boston have the most assets you get Tyler Hero you get Jaime Hawkins you get K.O. Ware and if I'm not mistaken if I was reading it correctly you get three first round picks and you get some pick swaps. Yes, sir. Now, on the flip side, you get Jalen Brown, you get two late round draft picks, two late first round draft picks. I don't know the guy. You can put it up here. Okay. The Miami Heat would send Tyler Hero, Jaime Heikez, Kel Ware, Nicola Hobbit, pick 13, two future first round picks. Boston would send Jalen Brown, Hugo Gonzalez, pick 27, and a future first round pick. Now, the question is, do you trust your scouting department?

11:08Shannon Sharpe:Do you trust your drafting department? Because you got a team that can go play right now with Hero, Hawkeyes, Ware, Havik, considering what you still have there. Jalen Brown is a number one option. He's going to sell tickets. But it seems to me they want draft capital. Remember, they bought Dame Lillard out of his deal. They still owe him like a hundred-something million. Damn.

11:38Shannon Sharpe:So, but if you give up all that, if you the Heat, Bam and Giannis ain't winning no championship.

11:46Joe Johnson:They got one more trick up they sleeve, huh? I'm going to see if it works.

11:50Shannon Sharpe:I sure hope so. Because this happens every time, Ocho, is that you give up all your assets.

11:59Joe Johnson:Yes, sir.

12:00Shannon Sharpe:And when the guy get there, the covet is bare. That's what happened. See, just imagine if the Warriors had to trade for Kevin Durant. Now you can't keep all those pieces. Yeah. Because he's a free agent and you didn't have to give up anything. Anything, yeah. Made it easy. Made it easy.

12:24Shannon Sharpe:when they mad at us you see the chat they mad at us y 'all keep it's always it's always us when Giannis says he could see himself playing for someone other than Milwaukee out of his own mouth that's what he said I didn't say that Joe didn't say that you didn't say that the media didn't say that Giannis said he could see himself playing for someone other than the Bucs yeah I'd be damn if they didn't get mad at us. The media, y 'all keep bringing it up. Y 'all keep bringing it up. It should have gave you pause for cause when he didn't sign the extension.

13:05Shannon Sharpe:In year five, he didn't mention nothing about playing somebody else. In year eight, he didn't mention about playing somewhere else. In year 10, now all of a sudden, he mentions the possibility of playing elsewhere.

13:17Joe Johnson:Yeah.

13:18Shannon Sharpe:and he didn't sign the extension that would have kept him there.

13:21Joe Johnson:They think with their heart. They think with their heart, not think with their mind. That's all.

13:28Shannon Sharpe:No, don't be mad. Ain't no messy. No, y 'all messy. Y 'all get mad at us. All we do is report. How do we have something to report on if there's nothing? Y 'all get mad every time. Ocho and I told you something was brewing in Philly. Y 'all got mad. How you know? You ain't in the locker room. All you doing is tabloid. Do y 'all think, y 'all really be thinking people, I'm not saying they don't, but 98 % of the time, the sources, the sources is the head coach, the general manager, the owner, the player personnel, the scouting department. That's the source. And guess what? And a sprinkling of players in there.

14:10Joe Johnson:Mm-hmm. Yeah. Shoot. I've been getting cussed out all day on Twitter. Talk about the Cleveland Browns and Deshaun Watson. You know, they cussing me out. I don't know what I'm talking about. Oh, is Jerry Judy a source? I say, hey, this had nothing to do with Jerry Judy. You talk about, oh, we took a picture a few days ago and all of a sudden now I'm saying what I'm saying. No. But one, Jerry Judy's from Miami. Right. We grew up together. I'm just a little bit older. I mean, you would hope people understand that. But no, I'm using common sense and logic. The money's going to play. There's nothing wrong with Shadour.

14:48Joe Johnson:I love Shadour. I've said it countless times. He played well last year. You know, he had some ups and downs. He had some growing pains, yes. But if Deshaun Watson is healthy, he's going to be the starter, whether you like it or not, because of the money. Yep. It's common sense if you understand the game. That's it. That's not a source. That's me having common sense in how the game goes. So, in other words, they mad at the messengers.

15:16Shannon Sharpe:Because when Adam Schefter say that, y 'all don't say Adam Schefter being messy. When Sean say that, y 'all don't say Sean's being messy. When Woj used to break story after story after story after story, y 'all didn't say Woj making it up. So why don't you and I got to be making it up? And y 'all come to the conclusion, well, Jerry, you took a picture. Why does it matter how we got our information? We telling you something you didn't know. And then you turn around like, oh, wait, we all knew that. No, you didn't. Because you're already being a choo down. But y 'all knew it now. But I'm just saying, why is it Woj?

15:55Shannon Sharpe:Why is it Jay Glazier? Why is it Shams? Why is it all those other people that give y 'all inside information that they got from sources? Why aren't they messy? I've never heard, and I follow Shepter. I've known Shepter longer than anybody. Anybody that ESPN, Schefter and I used to go to dinner. His mom and dad used to come to town. We would go to an Italian restaurant called Carmines. Ask him.

16:27Shannon Sharpe:He got to Denver the same time I got to Denver. I've looked up on his comments. Not one time have y 'all ever said the man was messy. I look up on Deshawn's comments. Never you say he's messy. I look up on Deshawn. So I just need y 'all to tell me why when we give you information from a player's standpoint and we can see things that you can't, we can understand things that you can't, why is Ocho and Unk being messy? Just answer me that. Go ahead, Chad. Take off.

16:58Shannon Sharpe:Nah, ain't no crash out. I'm asking y 'all a simple question. Don't know no crash out. Answer the question. hey no they got no I don't want to relax I'm fine I've been asleep all day you see what they do Ocho instead of answering the question crash out relax no tell me why Ocho and I are messy Adam Schefter report the same thing Adam Schefter said things were going on in the locker room when Ocho and I tried to tell you you just being messy y 'all will never say Adam Schefter starting anything Y 'all never say, Sean, I'm starting anything.

17:40Joe Johnson:Nobody listen to me because I play so much. I'm right 98 % of the time. I'm right 98 % of the time anytime I say something.

17:54Shannon Sharpe:You know what, Ocho? I don't say anything because if I were to say stuff, y 'all gonna try to pinpoint who I got it from. So to keep everybody safe I don't say nothing. I just let it play out.

18:14Shannon Sharpe:I let it play out. Y 'all find out in time. It's like when the levee bust. Man why didn't you tell me it's gonna flood? Y 'all gonna find out sooner or later.

18:25Shannon Sharpe:I know a lot. That ain't my job. I'm gonna let it play out. because all you're going to do is tell me I don't know what I'm talking about. That's all you're going to do, tell me I don't know what I'm talking about. I was on this OJ, AJ Brown since October. And I say the reason why you don't do that, I say because you'll have a game if you're not careful. And when they come to you, Ocho, and you don't make no plays. They're going to let you have it. And I'll be damned. The Rams game, the playoffs, Ocho, it came full circle. Yes, sir. There are a lot of things I see. Y 'all forget that a lot of these coaches, a lot of these general managers, I know them.

19:11Shannon Sharpe:You ain't get it from me, okay. Call me what you want to. But just call me correct. Say what you want, just say I'm correct. Why is it so hard for people to give people credit, especially our people? Y 'all get Adam Schefter credit like it's nothing. Me and Ocho are just a pro hustler trying to grow a channel. We can't get no credit.

19:39Joe Johnson:You know, he got that big entity behind him. No, no, no, no, no. Damn the entity.

19:46Shannon Sharpe:Ocho, we've been telling, look here, we played the game. Yes, sir. We telling you what we see. We telling you the interactions that's taking place, having been a receiver, having been a tight end, having dealt with the quarterback. Tell you something. All the years experience that we got between us, we got 50 years of playing football. Organized football. But now we don't know what we're talking about.

20:22Shannon Sharpe:So I'm crashing And guess what y 'all listen to me crash out

20:28Shannon Sharpe:I love it All the day All the day y 'all call it Y 'all still I say well damn Me and Ocho can say something Yeah this show did such and such Oh no me and Ocho said that

20:46Shannon Sharpe:damn nah we don't get it you ain't got a chair now you get it

20:55Shannon Sharpe:now they get it now the Boston Celtics situation a rare bull please they got mad at us the Boston Celtics situation with Jalen with JB and JT. Y 'all trying to break them up. Y 'all trying to break them up. You can't break up something that doesn't want to be broken up. Talk to the Boston Celtics. JB sees himself as a number one. Yeah. The Celtics sees him, Jason Tatum, as the number one. He was never going to be seen in the eyes that we see him now as long as Jason Tatum was there. What happened? Jason Tatum unfortunately got injured. Jalen Brown got an opportunity to show you he was a number one.

21:48Shannon Sharpe:Because even when JT excuse me, when JB won Eastern Conference Finals MVP, the Larry Bird Award, when he won Finals MVP, what did everybody say? That's because everybody geared their defense to stop Jason Tatum. You still wouldn't get a man the credit. Even though he had the hardware on his mantle, you tried to make a reason or an excuse why he got it. So now, Jason Tatum is injured. He averages a career high. He gets his team to the number two seed.

22:33Hey,

22:34Joe Johnson:you know what's funny? That's one of those situations. is there's really nothing that Jalen Brown could have done to change not only the eyes of the people, but the people in the organization that felt Justice Stadium was the number one. That is the thing, Ocho, is how they view them in the organization. Yeah, yeah. You can't change their mind in the organization, even based on what you did when he was hurt. They still feel the same way. Or trade, there would be no trade rumors with your name in it. Thank you.

23:02Shannon Sharpe:you've never tell me the time that you've ever heard a trade scenario when Jason Tatum was involved every trade scenario has always involved Jalen Brown not one scenario has ever had Jason Tatum name attached to it

23:24Joe Johnson:and you know what and I'm curious I wonder who people think is a better player out of the two now based on what Jalen Brown was able to do. They still believe it's Jason Tatum. See, there's nothing Jalen Brown

23:38Shannon Sharpe:could do to change that. Nothing. Even after he averaged 28.7, even after he got you the number two seed, after you sold off all the pieces that you had, you let Holiday go, you let Al Horford go, you moved on from Christoph Brzingis. There's nothing, nothing else Jalen Brown can do to convince them that he's the number one option and he's the equivalent of Jason Tatum. Absolutely nothing.

24:08Shannon Sharpe:That's crazy. And if you know, you hear him speaking out a little more. He knows. He sees the writing on the raw. Oh, yeah, absolutely. He know this all along where this was coming from. He tried to play it off. Hey, look, I ain't got no problem. I don't know their relationship. Don't particularly care. I'm here to win games. I ain't here to be nobody's friend. If I develop friends in the process of winning, I'm good with that, Ocho. But if I don't, to hell with you.

24:38Joe Johnson:You know what the thing is? They've already won their ring. They've already gotten their trophy. So that's set in stone. Now, if Jalen Brown is to go somewhere, I think they should run it back. I don't see him actually being traded. I don't know. Basketball is weird. The way they conduct themselves, especially owners, especially management, the players got FU money. When they want to leave, it's time to go.

25:09Shannon Sharpe:Jalen Brown said on his Twitch stream today, as the Celtics are active in trade negotiation for Giannis, to all the people that doubted me, that wanted me to do this, or wanted me traded, you're turning me into a monster. The Yahoo writer tweeted, Damian Peters, it might be an unpopular opinion, but I think the Celtics will regret trading Jalen Brown. He's not better than Giannis, but he's more doable at this stage of their careers. He's coming off his best individual season of his career, and he's already won a ring alongside Tatum. Breaking up a championship duo in this fashion is a huge, huge gamble.

25:48Shannon Sharpe:And it absolutely is. because if you don't win a championship, I don't care the numbers you put up. If you don't win a championship, people are going to say you effed it up.

25:58Joe Johnson:Yeah. I don't think he's moving. I don't think he's moving. I'm not sure what issues, if there are any issues between JB and JT, but moving those two, it just doesn't make any sense. And Giannis, completely different type of player. I'm not sure if it affects Jason Tatum in any kind of way with the style of play. But Giannis always having to have the ball in his hands. I'm not sure if it affects things there in the way they play. But it just wouldn't make any sense.

26:32Shannon Sharpe:My concern, though, Ocho, is how you built your team. You built your team to launch threes. You look at the Celtics, that's what they do. They launch threes. Yeah.

26:43Joe Johnson:Would they change that for one person?

26:47Shannon Sharpe:Giannis is going to have to get his touches. Giannis is not a three-point shooter. Giannis is a downhill guy. Yeah. They're going to need a point guard. I like Peyton Pritchett, but you're telling me Peyton Pritchett can be your starting point guard and play you 35 minutes a night? Or is he better in a role? Right. We're about to find out. are you going to be able to keep white

27:21Shannon Sharpe:two guys that I know can play together because guess what I've seen them play together for the last seven eight years versus bringing the guy in yes he's phenomenal 30 and 14 damn that's his average last four or five years that's what Giannis is average shooting 55, 56 % from the floor. The problem is every year he's getting dinged.

27:47Joe Johnson:30 and 14? Man, 30 and 14 you can have an injury or two, man. Go ahead. Because I know what I get when you're healthy. But guess what? Hey, hold on. You say he's only downhill too. He got a nice little midi too now. I done seen him. He done worked on that little midi.

28:04Shannon Sharpe:It ain't consistent, Ocho.

28:05Joe Johnson:You don't like it?

28:06Shannon Sharpe:Nope. it's not consistent.

28:11Joe Johnson:I can't wait till Giannis get here, man. I can say I told y 'all.

28:14Shannon Sharpe:And you see, Boston knows how to defend and they build a wall to just keep them out of the paint. Paint, yeah. I live with it making threes. You gonna make threes, I don't believe you can make enough threes to beat me. I don't believe you can make enough middies to beat me. To be, yeah. I'm just not gonna let your ass get to the rim.

28:34Shannon Sharpe:But, and I'm sure JB will probably never admit it. But he get tired of hearing it, Ocho. You think so? I'm getting tired of hearing it. All you talk about is all I do is play. Oh. All I do is play. I helped you win a championship. I'm finals MVP. Eastern Conference, I'm Eastern Conference MVP. And all you do in every scenario when you feel you can improve the team, I'm the guy that you're going to get rid of to improve the team.

29:05Joe Johnson:I mean, JT's a golden goose, huh? He is. Nothing you can do. Even the funny thing about it is your name is in rumors and JT's coming off an Achilles tear. Yeah. Even what you did last season. So that just, I mean.

29:23Shannon Sharpe:What are y 'all talking about Giannis hasn't been hurt in four years? Did Giannis miss time this year? What did I miss? Give me the last four years of Giannis history.

29:31Joe Johnson:He was hurt this year, remember, Unk?

29:33Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, I know. But maybe my IG, maybe my TV was messing up. Because sometimes my cable go out. So Giannis hasn't been hurt in the last four years. He played 36 games this year. What about the year before? He played 67, so he missed 15. What about next year? 73. He plays and missed nine. 63. So he missed 19, 9, 15, and 42. 46, excuse me, 46.

30:14Okay. Now, how old is Giannis now?

30:26Shannon Sharpe:He's got to be like 13 years, so he's got to be at least 31, 32. 31. Okay, 31. When will he be 32? He's 37. Okay, so he's 31. So he missed 19 games at 27.

30:40Joe Johnson:Uh-huh.

30:41Shannon Sharpe:He missed nine games at 28. He missed 15 games at 29. And he missed 46 games at 30. Yeah.

30:55Joe Johnson:Number keep going higher and higher, huh? you know you get a

31:00Shannon Sharpe:he's gonna get him because he plays so damn hard yeah he plays extremely extremely hard you're not gonna complain about his effort oh no some guy's like well damn son I wish you'd play hard you're never gonna complain about Giannis' effort right but for me just looking at JT's game looking at Giannis' game JT and JB fit better together to me Now, they could prove me wrong.

31:28Joe Johnson:I don't think they're going to prove you wrong. I think you said it right. I mean, you said it right. That's why he's going to be here. He's going to be better suited down here in Miami. It just doesn't make any sense. For a team that you just said is constructed to do what? Jack up threes. Yeah.

31:48Shannon Sharpe:But when you've done that, how do you, Ocho, how do you like recalibrate and say, you know what? we're not going to jack up 40, 45 threes a night. We're going to take that down to mid-20s, maybe 30. The whole thing is the swing, swing three. Yeah. Transition three. That's not Giannis.

32:14I love the sounds. The buzzing from the stadium, the chanting from the fans, the announcers calling the place. Soccer. Football. It's home. Why do I watch the World Cup? That's like asking me, why do I breed? I inherited that fandom from my mom. I like watching it with my dad. It's a connecting force. From Futuro Studios, I'm Fernanda Echavarri, and this is American Football, a show about soccer culture in the U.S. and its underdog roots. I'll be chatting with guests from all walks of life about the power of humor when it comes to facing difficult times. Like the co-founder of Rough Riders, Darren D. Dean. Talking about as a kid. The day we found out that you and the whole crew was at Hit Factory, the mission was to get me to go to the gate, start freestyling, and see if I could get in the studio.

35:02I'm rapping, and then suddenly I hear a voice. Hey, open the gate. Let him in. The gate slowly went. Gung, gung, gung, gung, gung, gung. They all, they're watching this, and they watch me walk into there, and that is a moment that I will remember for the rest of my life. 36:47Shannon Sharpe:Yes, in the afternoon. The truth is that the people always play in the afternoon. The people play in the afternoon. But the dream of being a football player is that the truth is not. Sharon Escobar. Pollo Bolliceño. Andas o no con mi rodada. Estás viral con eso. Estás viral. Estás viral. Estás viral. 37:39Shannon Sharpe:Timberwolves will acquire Brooklyn's number 33 pick for Randall and number 28. The T-Wolves now have flexibility to sign Ayo Jusamu and have an available$15 million non-tax mid-level and a$5.5 million biannual exception. Minnesota will also create a$33.3 million trade exception. So in other words, Ocho, they gave this man away. Yeah. They were so, listen, Chad, do y 'all realize what they did? Julius Randle is a former all-star. Yes. They'll say, you know what?

38:23Shannon Sharpe:Here, we get y 'all Julius Randle. What y 'all got? Y 'all got some pre-wrapped tape. Gatorade. You remember the Gatorade? Ocho used to paint in the bag, used to pour in the bag and pour the water in the stir.

38:33Joe Johnson:Yeah, yeah, and mix the powder and mix it up. Yeah. Hey, I got a question. Yes. He wasn't that bad.

38:40Shannon Sharpe:He wasn't that bad to just let him go like that. He wasn't good when they needed him to be good. And far too many times, that's what – because at the end of the day, Ocho, yes, you make a king's ransom in the regular season, but in the postseason, they needed him to show up. They needed somebody, and guess what? McDaniels had passed him as being the second best player. That's not an option. Right.

39:06Joe Johnson:So he made it easy for him to make that decision, huh? Yes. Man, that's messed up, boy.

39:15Shannon Sharpe:Man, they literally gave this man away. Hold on, let me see. The Timberwolves would acquire Brooker's number 33 pick for Randall and 28. So hold on. They say we take number 33. We give y 'all Julius Randall and our 28 pick.

39:34Joe Johnson:Damn.

39:38Joe Johnson:Now watch he go He went to the Bulls huh? No he went to the Nets Nick Claxton goes to the Bulls Oh to the Bulls okay Let me see so he over there with the Nets Who over there in Brooklyn with him?

39:48Shannon Sharpe:Nobody Michael Porter Jr. is the only one that I know of I don't really know anybody else on the Nets

39:56Joe Johnson:Chad and y 'all I mean That's not even fair So he done went somewhere He's not even on the contender anymore

40:03Shannon Sharpe:That's what they're telling him Remember, they thought he was the piece to a contender. Remember when the Knicks got him? Remember when the T-Wolves got him? He is supposed to be a missing piece to a contender. When they trade you to the Nets.

40:19Joe Johnson:I don't mean in no disrespect, but it's like, okay, now I'm just collecting a check and playing ball. I want to compete for a ring. I want to compete for a championship too.

40:29Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, you had that opportunities. You had opportunities. You were at the Knicks. and then they moved you. They thought that would be – and the mere fact that Minnesota thought they would get better by trading Cat versus for Drew Randall.

40:52Joe Johnson:That's tough. Hey, systems matter, like you say all the time.

40:58Shannon Sharpe:Great players overcome system. Kobe's going to beat Kobe in any system. LeBron will beat LeBron. Jordan will beat Jordan. the great players or be great in any system. Right. The great players can overcome a system. A great player is the system. Instead of being that bull in the china shop more times than offer, he jacking up threes. He needed to be the second best player. Night in and night out, he needed to be the second best player. And we saw, we saw right before our eyes McDaniels pass him. We saw it. DeSamo passed him. look better consistently than Julius Randle. Yeah. Shannon came off the bench and looked better than Randle.

41:42Shannon Sharpe:I can't pay you that kind of money, Ocho, and have guys coming off the bench or playing better than you.

41:50Joe Johnson:I can't. Especially in those big moments, especially in those big games, especially in the playoffs. They gave this man away.

42:03Shannon Sharpe:At least when he was on the Knicks, they went to the playoffs, and then you go to Minnesota like, okay, look at that. I'm going to join Ant-Man. I'm going to join Rudy Gobert. You know, hey, we got a nice little squad. We'll continue. You go to the Knicks, Ocho, you not going nowhere. You can't even – hey, when your family asks you off camera, man, how y 'all looking, you can't even lie.

42:32Shannon Sharpe:You can't lie. Hey, get your money. How many years you got still in the contract? You got one year left or two?

42:51Shannon Sharpe:Oh, he picking that up. Yeah, he got two years. What's his player option? Yeah, he picking that up. Wait, how much is it? 35.8. What if he don't pick it up? What happens? He become a free agent and then he hopes somebody gives him a long-term deal for more than that one year.

43:13Joe Johnson:So you think it's a possibility someone take a chance on him?

43:19Shannon Sharpe:Anything possible. It's hard for me to read the NBA what they do. Let's talk about it. According to Shams, Trey Young intended to sign a four-year, $212 million deal to stay with the Washington Wizards with a player option in year four. Remember, he turned down the$49 million player option for the 26-27 season, betting on himself to secure a longer-term deal. And today, Ocho, that paid off. According to Jake Fisher, Anthony Davis and his camp have been seeking a max extension and plausible to consider him a potential trade candidate out of Washington. You ask, man, why would Trey decline a$50 million deal?

44:00Shannon Sharpe:So I can get a four-year deal for 212.

44:03Joe Johnson:212, yeah. I just asked that yesterday, too. That's crazy. That's crazy. That's why. It came to fruition. Now, what about Anthony Davis? Now, how is he asking or requesting anything long-term with his history and always being heard?

44:16Shannon Sharpe:Guess what? Because they don't make very many 610 guys that can give you 20 and 12 and three blocks a game, shoot 50%, can anchor your defense.

44:25Joe Johnson:Right. I think they should put something in the contract, though. We'll give you— Players Association will never let you do it. Hey, we'll give you max dollars, right? And the only way you earn the max dollars that we put in the contract is that you stay healthy and play a certain amount of games each season.

44:41Shannon Sharpe:Mm-mm. Players Association ain't going to go for that. Now, you see kind of some of the situation that they put in Zion contract. Body fat got to be a certain level. It's got to be under a certain weight, things like that. Now, you want this deal? You ain't got to sign it. But who's going to run the risk? Yeah, I put that in there. Somebody's going to give you$150 million, and they say, well, Ocho, we need you on time. Well, you're going to sign that deal. And then you take, you know what? Hey, I'll take a late fee a couple of times, but I'm going to get this money. You're not going to be so bullheaded like, man, I ain't signing that.

45:20Shannon Sharpe:That's a bad deal. Ain't nobody else got to sign that. So that, and from what they're talking about, Anthony Davis going to probably get it and become a trade candidate.

45:31Joe Johnson:Yeah, I mean, he should get it, huh? Now, he that boy. Now, even I understand that when he playing and we on the court. I understand how good he is on both ends of the court. But, I mean, my goodness, Chad. I mean, you know, am I wrong? If I was hurt all the time, I heard the nickname Street Clothes. Who they call Street Clothes? Huh? Yeah. You know, so I mean, I'm just saying maybe, you know, the NBA team can protect themselves a little bit. You know, throw a little language in there like, listen, man, if you can't give us this amount of games, you know, we're going to take a little piece of that pie over the numbers.

46:09Shannon Sharpe:All they have is an insurance policy like a Lords of London. If somebody suffers a career-ending injury because that money is guaranteed, they get their money back. That's basically what they have, Ocho.

46:20Joe Johnson:Yeah.

46:22Shannon Sharpe:but like you said because of his because they know he's 20 plus points, double digit rebounds he shoots a high percentage, he's got a mid range, he can post the ball, he can shoot the three, sometimes I think he falls in love with the three a little bit too much he can anchor your defense oh he's phenomenal when he plays when he plays but Trey it's going to be very interesting because now you hear more all of a sudden Peterson has jumped back into the mix. Everybody, he has so much upside, so much upside that you're willing to take the risk on some of the things that we saw in college.

47:05Shannon Sharpe:Now with Trey back, but I think the most part, most guys with the exception, with the exception of Cam Boozer, both guys need the ball. The bombs have had the ball. Peterson might have Peterson might have didn't have the ball in his hands as much as DeBonza right obviously you know trade needs the ball so it's going to be interesting to see how they do this Washington has the number one pick Washington has the number one pick Utah has the number two pick

47:38Joe Johnson:and that would probably be why based on what they were able to do in college if DeBonza always had the ball in his hands I mean I would think his better destination would be Utah where he could be on a team we could have the ball in his hands. If Peters already showed you, listen, I could play off the ball. I could play without the ball.

47:57Shannon Sharpe:All things being equal, everybody wants to be the first pick. Now, being the first pick doesn't land me in my ideal spot. Maybe it's a situation. Remember, Chris Webber went number one overall, and they ended up trading him for Penny Hardaway. Guys like, look, you can trade me wherever. I just want that attached out of the number one overall draft pick. Trade me wherever. Right. But just give me that. Let me have that. And I think A.J. DeBonzo would love to be the number one overall draft pick, and then they make a trade, them and Washington work out something. But I just think, how tall is Peterson?

48:39Shannon Sharpe:Because that is a really small backcourt with him and Trey Young in it.

48:51okay I'm still small

48:54Shannon Sharpe:I totally is 6 '4 6 '4 but you know Trey's 6 foot we being nice

49:07Shannon Sharpe:and uh look what happened

49:20Shannon Sharpe:Well, he going, I mean, I mean, now I ain't going by Wikipedia because you set your own Wikipedia numbers. What do they measure at the NBA combine? Okay, six, four and a half. That's what he is. Oh, he's six. Oh, yes. Because they measure you in your socks, I guess. So he's six, four and a half. Because you know at the NFL combine, they make you put your heels together and lift your toes. because they don't want you to get no arch. Now, they say, you know what, he's probably 6 '5", because he's going to have on sneakers. So we're going to go and get him that half inch, so he's 6 '5".

49:59Shannon Sharpe:NBA champion Ron Harper, father Dylan Harper, completely shut down the widely circulated... 55:18Shannon Sharpe:reports of rumors regarding Dylan's camp demanding a starting spot stop it fake news You don't want to demand a spot. You want to earn a spot. Ron also reposted us. Joe Johnson says Dylan Harper has the opportunity to be a prime James Harden potential. He would average 22, 23 points a game his rookie season if he had the same freedom. Did James play defense? No, not like Harper, bro. But Harper should hope that when his son's career is over, he's a top 75 player. Yeah. We weren't trying to be dismissive. You was praising him. You see something in this kid that he can say, you know what? He has the ability to be offensively what James Harden was.

56:06Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. We were praising him. We didn't shoot him down. We didn't say, oh, we said he should be in the starting lineup. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. But see, when you just listen to clips and not listen to the meat of what you and I was discussing, and Ocho, this is what you get. Yeah. Nobody was trying to shoot your son down. We was praying to your son. We said he was the second best on some nights, the best player on the Spurs. Yeah. But I guess you didn't hear that part.

56:39Joe Johnson:Go ahead, Joe. He probably didn't. and the fact that Joe even think he can be somewhat similar to James Harden if he had the green light to shoot when he want to and he can play defense the way he does? Come on now. You can't ask for nothing better than that.

56:55Shannon Sharpe:Hey, look, despite what his pop say, his son, he's special. He's special, bro. We were trying to – we thought we did a good job of conveying. You did, having played the game, having looked at James Harden game. They're both lefties. Yeah. Harper already has an NBA body. Harden had to grow into his body. Look at Harden as a rookie and look at Harden now. Look at Dylan Harper. That is a grown man's body. Yeah. Given the same opportunities to have a green light, which is going to be highly unlikely because he's playing with Wimby. Yeah. But that situation, we're saying he, Joe was saying he has the ability to be as special as Harden.

57:39Shannon Sharpe:For you to say that, knowing what hard it is he might not play no defense he's one of the great offensive guys in the history of the NBA he's an MVP he's led the league in scoring he's led the league in assists he's a top 75 player yeah and he made it seem like we say he should be a role player we're saying that he should start yeah

58:09Shannon Sharpe:hey sky's the limit for their young kid, bro. You know, he just got to keep putting the work in. And he'll look bigger than James Harden, Ocho. Yes. Yeah, like, if you watch him, the way he maneuvers around the court and when he does get in the paint, bro, it's like he big boy. He damn near play like he did. He play through contact. That's why Harden. Harden is slippery. Harden is trying to get on edges. No, he's trying to play through you. Yeah. He can get on an edge. There you go. But you look at him, he's trying to dunk on folks. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah, he ain't playing. He ain't playing. But he got that same bag that I think James Harden has, and maybe it is because they both lefties, got nice, smooth jump shots.

58:53Shannon Sharpe:His potential is through the roof, bro. But I'm just trying to figure out, so because we say he can be James Harden, and you're talking about did James Harden play defense? No. But he's an 11-, 12-time NBA all-star. He's an all-NBA player. he's a top 75 player in the history of the game yeah don't look don't don't listen james harden is not a defensive guy but don't demean the guy now i agree he's a top top 75 he's a top five two guards all the two guards he's a top five now i don't think anybody's gonna put him over colby and jordan now there's been some debate about him and d-way yeah he personally i like d-way but hey to each his own.

59:37Shannon Sharpe:Some people go like, James Harden offensive game is so great, I can't have him no lower than third. Okay, fine. But, man, y 'all gotta stop this notion, man. Y 'all make it seem like every player in the league played lockdown defense like Kobe and Jordan.

59:56Joe Johnson:They didn't. It's as small as a select few, especially in today's game.

1:00:02Shannon Sharpe:It is, bro. It is. It ain't but a couple guys who are willing to do that dirty work because everybody wants to, you know, they want to shoot the threes. They want to score to 25, 30 points a night. It ain't a lot of cats want to do that damn dirty work. How many guys in the history of the game has been first team all NBA and all NBA defense? How many guys in the same season? It ain't many, boy. It's a few. Elijah Juan, Robinson, Duncan, Duncan, Kobe, Braun, Jordan. How many? It ain't been. How many first team all NBA players and all defensive players on the first team in the same season? Giannis, Kawhi?

1:00:50Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. I bet you they've been less than 15. Oh, yeah. Because I bet Scottie Pippen, I just don't think offensively he probably was first team, but defensively, you know, he always made the. probably probably I think he made it maybe twice I know the year that Jordan retired remember the first year he almost got him there yeah yeah but it's hard when he played you got you got Barkley you got Malone what I mean they battling it out damn near every year and then you get KG, you get Dirk. Yeah, yeah. So it wasn't no easy fix, and there's only five spots on both. Yeah. Right. So there's not a whole lot of guys that can say, you know what, I locked it down on both ends on a nightly basis, offense and defense.

1:01:48But look, I ain't got no problem.

1:01:51Shannon Sharpe:I believe every man should praise his son, but I believe you can praise your son. James Harden ain't no – you can say he didn't play no defense, but he's one of the greatest offensive players we've ever seen. Offensive player, yeah. Hey, old Ron Harper here. Anytime somebody say something about his son, he come at him, man. He – But even when somebody tried to praise his son, he still tried to come at him. Yeah, yeah.

1:02:17Joe Johnson:Hey, you know what's so funny? Man, all this time, man, I ain't even know that was Mr. Harper. You didn't? Nah, because we never talked about it. We just talked about Dylan Harper. We never talked about it being Ron Harper's son. We never say nothing like that.

1:02:33Shannon Sharpe:As soon as you said Ron Harper, I put that. Oh, offensively? He's a good defensive player. Now, hey, hey, hey. Brunson average 33. Yeah. Yeah.

1:02:54Shannon Sharpe:Brunson average 33. He got 45 in the closeout game. Ain't very many people that have had 40 plus points in the closeout game. I don't know, Joe. They didn't close our game. Jordan. Giannis got 50 when he closed out Phoenix. Jordan got 45 when he closed out Utah. And Brunson got 45 when he closed out the Spurs. Yeah.

1:03:19Shannon Sharpe:sometimes Ron just take the compliment bro nobody trying to demean your son Joe actually as a matter of fact thought so much of your son's game that he said he had a chance to be hardened if given the opportunity that's praise that is praise

1:03:40Shannon Sharpe:we talked about it we believe like man this man need to be in the starting lineup or at least playing more minutes than what they're giving him. Okay, you're giving him 25, 27 minutes. You got to bump that up to 30, 35. The last game, he played 31 minutes. That should have been 36, 37. And guess what? Guess what, Uncle Osho? We talking about a damn rookie that's 20 years ago. Yes! That's 20 years ago. That's what you think of him, Joe. Yeah. Having played the game as long as you played, played at the level in which you played, you think that much of that man's game, seeing him as a rookie, that you say, you know what?

1:04:14Shannon Sharpe:I think given an opportunity, He could have a game similar to James Harden. No question. No question.

1:04:28Shannon Sharpe:I just hope to see him in the start lineup. I don't care. I don't care. Earn. He done earned him. I mean, if this ain't earned, if he played this year as a rookie and what he's done in the playoff didn't earn him the right to start, well, I don't know what he can do. Me neither. He'll be, hey, I'm telling y 'all, they're going to find a way. Him and Fox, they're going to be in the damn backcourt together. So what are we going to do with Castle? It's going to be Fox, Castle, and Harper. And Harper. So they're going to have three guards lined up. Yeah, yeah, they're going to have three guards. Because see, Castle and Harper, they play a lot bigger than they size.

1:05:09Shannon Sharpe:You know what I'm saying? They play like they about 6 '9". Hell, them boys play big. And then you'll probably keep the way Champinney shot the ball here. You always want a guy like that. But I like Vassell, too. I do, too. You got a good problem on your hand. It's going to be it. I don't know about a good problem because, hey, there's only so many shots to go around, Joe. Man, when I say good problem, think about some of the teams, hell, who come to every season thinking, man, we just want to be better this year and getting their eyes beat out every damn night. Man, please. Hey, you can kind of pick and choose what you want to do if you're saying Antonio, you know, to stay on the right trajectory.

1:05:49Shannon Sharpe:You got a bunch of young guys. Your oldest guy in the starting lineup here was 25, and that's who Vassell? Yeah. Man, please. But it's going to be very interesting to see how they put this thing together. I think they're hungry. I think they got a sour taste in their mouth. They're like, bro, we led every single game by double digits, and we lost all these games except one. I'm talking about big leagues, too. Yeah, 29 points, 16 points, 13 points. And I think the thing is the inexperience really hurt them because they didn't have somebody to calm them down. I don't think their coach did them any favors.

1:06:24Shannon Sharpe:We can say I think two things can be true. I think the inexperience hurt them, not having someone to calm them down. And I don't think the coach – I think Mike Brown out-coached Mitch Johnson. Oh, yeah. That's not a knock because here's a guy that's only been coaching basically a year and a half, if that. took over from Pop

1:06:43Joe Johnson:hey Joe you can't you can't blame coach you can't blame Mr. Johnson for that the extension of the coach is on the court it was a veteran in Fox he's supposed to dictate play

1:06:56Shannon Sharpe:I agree

1:06:58Joe Johnson:when to speed it up when to slow it down calm down they constantly making mistakes back and forth

1:07:05Shannon Sharpe:don't let them go on a 20 to 4 run before you call a time out see stuff like that Yeah, I mean, yeah, we can't blame the coach.

1:07:12Joe Johnson:We got to blame them people. No, no, no, no.

1:07:14Shannon Sharpe:Hey, but hey, what about the substitutions? What about the rotations? Yeah, you got to, hey, hey. Who's running the rotations? Yeah, yeah. Who keeps putting Luke Cornett in and every time you're in a negative? Yeah, I. Do you see what, what you call him being? He brought Landry Shammott in. Instead of Miles McBride being the first off the bench, Landry Shammott was the first off the bench. Yeah, yeah. You see, when Cat got in trouble, hey, Mitchell Robinson got found trouble, he brought another guy in. And then he brought another big in. See, it's the game within the game. Yeah, I understand that.

1:07:51Shannon Sharpe:Look, once you get on the court, but you got to be able to like, you know what, hey, I don't seen enough. Hey, this thing about to get out of here. Hey, let me go kick it. Hey, ain't nothing run. Let me take a timeout. Yeah, yeah. You got to. Hey, look. Also, those threes that was falling in the first half, guys, they're not falling now. less slack off of taking those threes. They're a young team. Sometimes you have to coach them, Ocho. Put the ball on the floor. Get to the – Hey, bro, you shooting threes when normally we get to the bonus and six minutes to go in and a quarter. Yeah. And we taking threes with 18, 19 seconds on the shot clock?

1:08:28Shannon Sharpe:For what? We're up 29. We're not down 29. Yeah.

1:08:33Joe Johnson:Trying to extend –

1:08:34Shannon Sharpe:Hey, I remember playing, boy, when Pop was coaching Uncle Ocho, You go on a 4-0 run, his ass calling timeout. He going to burn out his damn timeout. He ain't. 8-4, 8-4, Joe. That man calling timeout, Ocho. You go on a 6-0 run to start the game, Papa call a timeout. Hell yeah. And take his whole five out. That man don't be playing, bro. So I just think when it comes to coaching, you do have to make adjustments. You look at Mike Brown. He was throwing shit at the wall, hoping it stick. He ain't no woman. He played Alvarado and Brunson together. Hell, he hadn't done that. He hadn't done that. They put Alvarado in there, Ocho.

1:09:06Shannon Sharpe:from the 29-point lead. Alvarado played major, major minutes. Yeah.

1:09:12Joe Johnson:That's coaching. Yeah. And that's that, hold on. Alvarado with that firecracker. He understand the value that Alvarado brings once you get on that court, Joe. But he all over the place like the Tasmanian Devil.

1:09:23Shannon Sharpe:The thing is, Ocho, he had never played him with Brunson because they make them have him so small in the backcourt. But hell, that came to be their best lineup. Yeah. Hey. Prime example. look at what Steve Kerr did. He binged Andrew Bogut and inserted Andre Iguodala. Yeah. His starting center make him fast. One of my championships. And it's small and guess what? Everybody tried to be small. Everybody tried to have a depth lineup. Yep. So he made some rookie mistakes as a coach too. He absolutely did. Here's something that should not be as complicated as it is. Getting a racist statue removed. And here's something that should be a whole lot easier than it is, getting a new one put up in its place.

1:10:12I'm Akilah Hughes, and Rebel Spirit Season 2 is about both of those things.

1:10:16Shannon Sharpe:As I was watching these statues come down, I was thinking about what it meant that I grew up in a majority Black city in which there were more homages to enslavers than there were to enslaved people. It is hot. You've only been parked a short time and it's already 99 degrees in there. Let's not leave children in the back seat while running errands. It only takes a few minutes for their body temperatures to rise. And that could be fatal.
