In short
The episode is a sports news and debate show covering two main NBA topics. First, hosts discuss allegations reported by Pablo Torre that Kawhi Leonard had an undisclosed multimillion-dollar deal with Daktronics (linked to the Intuit Dome’s Halo Board) allegedly used to bypass the NBA salary cap. The claim is that Clippers officials discussed it as a workaround, with money funneled to Leonard through Daktronics, and that if proven, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver would have to punish Kawhi and the Clippers. Guests/hosts speculate punishments could include draft picks and/or a suspension, and argue other owners would push for enforcement.
Second, they debate Monta Ellis saying the Warriors would have had the same success if Ellis replaced Steph Curry on their championship teams. The hosts reject this, arguing Steph’s transcendent shooting and off-ball gravity created space that Ellis’s game (more downhill/midrange) couldn’t replicate.

2:51Shannon Sharpe:Hey guys, it's your favorite Unk here. Go ahead and click that subscribe button below so you don't miss a single episode of Nightcap. That button right here. Come for the sports, stay for the story.
3:06Wow.
3:07Shannon Sharpe:According to Pablo Torre, Kawhi Leonard allegedly, allegedly had an undisclosed multimillion dollar deal with Daktronics, the company that built the Intuit Dome Halo Board. Clipper officials openly discussed this as a way to bypass the salary cap. Money was funneled to Kawhi through Daktronics. If I F is the biggest word in the English language, I capital I capital F asterisk. if this can be proven, if this is true, these allegations, Adam Silver's going to hammer. He has no choice. The Clippers. He has no choice. Hammer who? And he's going to have to punish Kawhi. Yeah. Kawhi? Absolutely.
4:02Joe Johnson:Absolutely. Wait, hold on. It wasn't Kawhi idea to try to find a way to... Absolutely, it was.
4:09Shannon Sharpe:Actually, if we're to believe what was reported originally is that his uncle Dennis went to Toronto and tried to get things that would have been illegal, which would get a salary cap violation. When he went and talked to the Lakers, allegedly what was reported is that he tried to get things. A source in Torre's report claims that Leonard served as the official spokesman of a company that Adia openly joked about being 1 ,000 % way to circumvent the salary cap. Now listen.
4:44Joe Johnson:So the Clippers get no... The Clippers, if this is true, the NBA don't want it to be true.
4:56Shannon Sharpe:But let me tell you who does want it to be true. The other 29 owners. They can make it go away. Because the other 29 owners say, we could have done this. Yeah. Yeah. There's repercussions. Go ahead. So what do you think the punishment should be, Joe? if this is proven if there is right now there's a lot of circumstantial evidence but if they were to find a smoking gun what do you think the punishment should be for the Clippers and what should the punishment be for Kawhi hey I'm not sure what the punishment should be okay Ocho but it's gonna be egregious because when this first came about man y 'all remember me I was like man You know, I hate to say it, but I kind of think it's some truth to this.
5:45Shannon Sharpe:You know, because I feel like that probably could have been a deal breaker of him not going to L.A. and coming to the Clippers. You feel what I'm saying? So, obviously, I hate that it's kind of, you know, came to this point. It's came to the forefront. And we really don't really know if it's really true. But, yeah, man, they're going to punish Kawhi and the Clippers. I'm talking about draft picks. It's going to be bad, man. Well, if they do that to the Clippers, it's over. Hold on, Joe.
6:09Joe Johnson:Listen, I got a question, too, Joe. So now when you say it's going to be bad, when it comes to punishing someone like Kawhi that has played a very long time, that's made a lot of money, what kind of punishment do you think? Are we talking about suspension or just taking? Yeah, suspension. Well, for the whole season or just a few games?
6:24Shannon Sharpe:I ain't going to say the whole season. It's going to hit him. Yeah, it's going to be some M's that he's going to miss behind this. Okay, so about 20 games. That's enough. I think the thing is that when you look at it, we heard rumblings, and everybody said, well, when this was talked about, when he signed with the Clippers and everybody said it's sour grapes because you didn't get an opportunity to sign him, it was reported Toronto said, no, we can't do this. This circumvents the salary cap. We're getting in trouble. It was reported that Jeannie Buss said, we can't do this. We can't give you a condo.
7:04Shannon Sharpe:We can't give you this. We can't do that. That's what was reported at the time. Everybody said it was because everybody's saying this now because he signed with the Clippers. One organization is the Lakers. The other organization you just won a championship with. And you go to an organization that's been dormant for years and years and years. And people couldn't understand why. Money's comparable.
7:40Shannon Sharpe:give people a choice so there was like that's why people had a hard time believing it I don't know I think they're doing their due diligence they don't want to jump the gun they don't want to overreact but man when you worth 170 billion dollars Ocho I mean And the money, let's just say it was$30 million. Let's just say it was an extra$15 to$30 million he was getting. Man, you think that man missing that? No, I don't know. No, he ain't missing that. That ain't 1%. That ain't 1 % of his net worth. And because he gave the Clippers hope. That was the first time the people that really started thinking that the Clippers really had a chance.
8:31Shannon Sharpe:Now, they thought like when they had Blake Griffin and Chris Paul, They had a nice little team there. But for the most part, until Kawhi, Kawhi gave them hope. Obama said he's going to de-bo the pot. Yeah, I'm going to de-bo the pot. You got to think about how he gets a team. He paid basically four or five times more than anybody had ever paid for an NBA franchise. That's how bad he wanted it. So how much do you believe he would be willing to pay to get a superstar of that magnitude?
9:06Shannon Sharpe:Hey, that little 20 piece, 25 piece, yeah, they ain't they thing. That ain't nothing, nah? Nah. We create a little, you know what I mean, the little funnel through there like that, that there. Funnel meals, I wish somebody could funnel me a little something, something, you know. Yeah, that's what I'm saying.
9:21Joe Johnson:Hey, hold on, hold on. That man up there cooking. He got on cooking, but I would let him cook. Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, let him cook, man. Yeah. I tell you one thing my grandma always told me, man. What's that? He don't show up when you want him, but he always on time. He always on time. Every time. Hello. Every time. It's coming. Okay. It's coming. Hey, I'm trying to think.
9:43Shannon Sharpe:It's coming on time, my baby.
9:44Joe Johnson:You know, hey, they might make this go away too now. You heard me? Yeah. You know the powers that be, Joe, the powers that be that run the show can make this go away.
9:57Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. You think so? Yeah.
10:03Joe Johnson:What?
10:05Shannon Sharpe:Come on now. I don't know. Ocho, I think all these other owners, bro, they're going to get involved. They're going to take a deep dive into this. Hold on. All the owners don't get along? No. Not when you cheating here. No, they don't get along. They just get along when they're going against the players. Because that's for the greater good. No, I don't know. I don't know. That's a good one.
10:34So, I just don't know because I ain't admitting to nothing.
10:41Shannon Sharpe:Right. I don't give a damn if you got that. I don't give a damn if you got that. I'm not admitting to that. I mean, Bob was like, boy, you give me the death sentence. You give me the death penalty. You're going to take all my draft picks. Well, first of all, you ain't got no draft picks anytime soon anyway. but then you're going to hammer with a fine, probably 50 mil. Damn. Oh, yeah. Well, I don't think they can't punish them like that. What's the most they can find? I think the most they can find is probably$2 million. Man, it's going to be like you going out there giving a homeless man 50 cents.
11:18Shannon Sharpe:True. There ain't going to be about that. There has to be a limit. Ash, can you look up right quick what would be the penalty? What's the most they can find an owner?
11:28Shannon Sharpe:he's not going to admit to that Kawhi's not going to admit to it
11:37Shannon Sharpe:3.5 was what they find the Timberwolves but they took like 3 or 4 first round draft picks from the Timberwolves that's what killed the Timberwolves yeah but they did wrong they had a handshake deal under the table deal with Joe Smith
11:54Joe Johnson:Well, how'd it get out?
11:56Shannon Sharpe:Dude got fired and told. The same way it always gets out.
12:01Joe Johnson:Oh, so man, they'd be snitchy, man.
12:03Shannon Sharpe:Three people can keep a secret, but two out of three gotta be dead. That's the only way it's gonna work. The more people that know something, the greater the chance it's gonna get out.
12:16Joe Johnson:See? That's what I say. Remember when we talked about the rip and all that money?
12:20Shannon Sharpe:know. Joe and I had already done said what we had to do to you.
12:24Joe Johnson:Yeah, I'm just saying that's why I had to get rid of you two because I'm keeping all the money.
12:28Shannon Sharpe:Boy, hey, hey, you a day late in the dollar store. I'm going to put one of your I'll put one of your dons so quick. Yeah, he out of here. Yeah, I was going to get it. Look quick like a little hog. We're going to do a little bit. Yeah, yeah. I don't want you to suffer. I don't want you to suffer. I want you to go take the long one. Yeah, yeah. Like Red Claw. Hey, go to sleep. And I hope it's the long one.
12:56Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, but I mean, Pablo is a very, he's a very, very good investigative reporter. He's done his homework on this. Now, somebody been coughing up these documents. Yeah. Somebody been coughing up these documents. I don't know who it is, Ocho, but somebody been coughing up some documents.

13:19Joe Johnson:Well, you know, whoever's coughing it up, either they don't like Kawhi or they don't like Mr. Balmer. Or they don't like both of them. Kawhi is so quiet. I heard him talk maybe what? Three, four times. So you would think he was someone that's likable where they would kind of, you know, listen, we really never had any problems out of Kawhi. Let's see what we can do to get this going because he's not a problem child. He's not one that is always in the news or always in the media for doing things wrong. Let's see if we can sweep this one under the rug. But I guess not.
13:53Shannon Sharpe:Man, Kawhi ain't even got no Instagram. I mean, Kawhi ain't studying it. Hey, they know Balma pockets. His pocket's long, bro, so they got to check up on him. Yeah. So... You said he ain't got no Instagram? That man ain't got no IG, bro. He ain't study y 'all out here. That man out there living his best life. Yeah, and so, you know, this and that, and it seems like he hadn't been signed because the last thing I want to do if I'm Toronto is to sign him, and then he gets suspended. Hmm. Yeah, so I don't think that Trey going to go, I don't think that Trey going to go through, Uncle Ocho, and I don't think the Clippers, I don't think they going to mind having him back neither.
14:42Shannon Sharpe:Damn. Yeah. That's crazy. That's got to be a messed up feeling to have. Can't go where you want to go. I got to go back home. Yeah, I mean, because think about it. They already traded. You already in your head. You mentally in Toronto. You know what I'm saying? Now you got to take all that back like, damn. Because that's what happens, man. That's the bad look. Ooh-wee. He thought he was going to get up out of there sky free, Bocho. No, no, no, no, no, no. I hate you. You black, you know what? You mofo. Kiss my you know what. That's why your mama ain't itch. That's why she didn't. And then all of a sudden, oh boy, he go back to his old lady and now she trying to come back to you.
15:35Shannon Sharpe:Hello. Nah, I'm good. I'm good. So yeah, yeah. I can't get back. You was good. You called me a black mofo? and talking about I was no good for nothing, but the moment you brought my mama into it. Talking about my mama? I got to let it go.
15:51Joe Johnson:Yeah, once you talk about mama.
15:53Shannon Sharpe:I got to let you go. I cannot good conscience know that you talking about my mama like that. I'll be as sorry as you want me to. You sorry, B? I'll be a hundred of them. Right. Yeah.
16:06Joe Johnson:You ain't no good. Mama. Enjoy the line at mama. See you. I'm Nancy Glass, host of the Burden of Guilt Season 3 podcast. This is a story about a horrendous situation that destroyed two families. It started more than seven years ago when Cindy and Kenny were two 40-somethings who had just gotten engaged. Days later, they walked into a scorched-earth war they never saw coming. Turn around and place your hands behind your back. The cops came into my house and threw me in jail. And to Cindy's surprise, her fiance, Kenny, was charged with abusing one of her children. I never once doubted Kenny, and I always doubted the accusation.
16:50On Season 3 of Burden of Guilt, you'll hear a story about the lengths someone will go to in order to get what they want. This case has got to be one of the most despicable. Listen to Season 3 of Burden of Guilt on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

21:10Shannon Sharpe:So.
21:14Shannon Sharpe:All right, Joe. I want to know what you think about this one. Monte Ellis says Warriors would have had the same success if he had replaced Steph Curry on their championship teams. If you switch me and Steph out with a team that won the championship, it'd be the same thing.
21:29Joe Johnson:Uh-oh. I'm going to use the bathroom on that one. Joe know that one better than me. Go ahead, Joe.
21:36Shannon Sharpe:Negative. Negative, huh? Monte Ellis was a hell of a player. You talking about as far as a bucket getter? He can do that with the best of them all. But to replace him and Steph, the role that Steph played, no, sir. No, sir. You can't swap that and say they're going to have the same success. I beg to differ on that. I think you actually downplaying Steph Curry's greatness. Yes. Yeah, I mean. He absolutely is. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You downplaying his greatness and how great he was in those championship runs. Bro, he was virtually unstoppable. you would need to, if this man was a top 75 player, maybe I was like, okay, well, maybe.
22:23Shannon Sharpe:But how are you going to replace a guy, a top 75 guy? By all estimation, he's the first or second greatest point guard. I don't really look at him as a point guard, but I'm saying it's he or Magic Johnson that's in the conversation. With that being said, really? All the years. I don't believe because let me tell you why. Let me tell you why I don't think so. Because he needs the ball. Yeah. If you look at the success that Steph had and KD had when they played together, neither one of those guys needed the ball. Absolutely. Absolutely. I just don't know why guys – it's okay. It is okay for you not to be Steph Curry.
23:08Shannon Sharpe:Because guess what? No one else is either. nah yeah I think his greatness this man this man actually said they would have had the same success if you take Steph out and put him in I have a question what's the question
23:27Joe Johnson:I never had an opportunity to watch Montee Ellis play right I'm assuming he talk about the team that was assembled with Kevin Durant and Klay they went to two championships before KD
23:38Shannon Sharpe:and KD would have never came there because he was balling. He needed a ball. KD wanted to go because nobody dominated the ball there. So you're not going to get KD.
23:47Joe Johnson:Monte Ellis was a point guard, I'm assuming, right?
23:50Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. More like a two. A two. Masquerading as a two. A two masquerading as a point.
23:56Joe Johnson:Well, Steph is the greatest shooter of all time behind the arc.
24:00Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, yeah.
24:01Joe Johnson:How close? How close? Because I never watched Monte Ellis play. Obviously, I didn't watch basketball back then. How close was Monte Ellis from the arc? Or just efficiently efficiently from the three.
24:12Shannon Sharpe:He was a downhill, get-to-the-bucket kind of guy. You couldn't keep him out of the paint, Ocho. He was athletic, and he played fearless. As far as getting ISO, getting by his man, getting a bucket, he was hell to stop. So he was Russell Westbrook? Yeah, similar. Similar. He played with that type of force. He could shoot now. He could shoot. He could shoot, but he wasn't no damn three-point shooter like that. He was like mid-range. He was a mid-range assassin. And Steph, not only was he a great three-point shooter, but you're talking about two, three, four steps behind the damn three-point. Man, you had to guard this man come across half court, bro.
24:54Shannon Sharpe:So that extends your defense, which allows guys like Steph Curry, if he runs a lot of pick and rolls, to be able to operate in so much space. I mean, don't get me wrong, man. Montae was great, bro. He was great. He wasn't Steph. And what happens is is that once you start picking them up out there, they start setting the pick out higher. Now you ask grass. Now you got your big trying to deal with him in all that space. Steph going to get right on down the hill. Yeah. It's hard. It's hard to game plan for Steph, Uncle Ocho. Not only was he such a great shooter, but he's probably the guy on the court who was in the most shape.
25:35Shannon Sharpe:He was in the best shape. You know what I mean? because he understood that was going to be his defensive mechanism. Meaning if I can run your ass out to death on offense, you know, that may even save me a little bit on defense. And I just think it opened up his game a lot more, especially when you got guys that buy in like Draymond, you look at his deficiencies offensively. He's not a scorer. He's not a shooter, but he a hell of a playmaker. His IQ for the game is high as I don't know what. So he used Steph to his advantage. And I think when you got players like that, Like, I couldn't really see Draymond and Monte Ellis being a great fit.
26:15Shannon Sharpe:You know, their games really don't complement each other if you just want to keep it 100. You know what I mean? You know what? Maybe if Dame Lillard had said something like that, I was like, okay. Because he can shoot the ball. He can handle the ball. He can catch and shoot. He's tremendous off of pick and roll. He moves without the ball. Okay. I might be looking at that. I look at my what do you think about Monte Ellis and Stephon Marlbury would you say their games are similar guys that get down here yeah yeah yeah want to get down here I think Stephon might be a little bit more explosive hey hey Steph has some money but Monte Ellis man Monte Ellis was a bucket now he can score now he came out of high school Uncle Ocho yes Monte Ellis came out of high school to the pros at 6-3 you know what I mean like you got you got you got to be like that bro Yeah.
27:04Shannon Sharpe:What, he from Mississippi or something? Yeah, he from Mississippi. He from like Mississippi, yeah. Okay. I think to go back and look at that high school game with him and Lotero Green getting buckets against each other. Oh, yeah. Nah, nah.
27:14Joe Johnson:Nah. Hey, Joe. What's up? Now that gives me a better understanding why he has the confidence to say what he said. We talk about a player that made it to the NBA coming right out of high school.
27:24Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. At 6 '3".
27:25Joe Johnson:He has to think like that. Okay, I got it now.
27:28Shannon Sharpe:He explosive. He was explosive though, Ocho. Yeah, he was. He was a good player. Joe and I, we're not saying he's not a good player. We're saying we just don't believe based on his body of work, Steph's body of work, with that offense, the way it was, the free-flowing, nobody dominated the ball. I just don't see it. No. And that's not to say that he's not a good player because he was a good player. But Steph is not a generational player. Steph Curry is a transcendent player. Hello. He's historically great. There's a difference. A generation is 20, 25 years. Steph Curry is transcendent. Yeah. As the word Skip would say transcendental.
28:14Shannon Sharpe:He's historically great. So when we say historically, we're talking about the history of the game. Yeah. We're talking about that. That's what we're talking about. We're talking about Steph Curry. Stephen Wardell Curry. Yeah. He's special, bro. He's special. But you know what? When you think about it. The only thing they got in common is complexion. But you know Steph. That's the only thing they got in common. You know they played together. I think Monte had Steph when he was a rookie, and they ended up having to get rid of Monte. And why is that? So Steph could flourish. Hello. There you go. There you go.
28:55Yeah.
28:59Shannon Sharpe:Exactly why they did it. It ain't no secret. it. Hey, what, Montae? And guess what they did? They got rid of him and guess, and guess what they got? They drafted who? The guy out of Washington state. Y 'all know him? Another life game fellow. Clay Thompson. That moved without the ball. They didn't need the ball to be good. Hey. And Katie says, you know what? I can play with them guys because they got guys over there to play the game, play the game the right way. They don't, nobody need to dominate the ball. Yeah. Yeah. That's why they fit so seamlessly. Them two beige brothers, boy, they something else, boy.
29:36Shannon Sharpe:Splash brothers. Get man the credit, man. Yeah. Hey.
29:46Shannon Sharpe:Now, I just, baby, you took me just. Man, but it's not like Steph. I mean, they're about the same height. Steph, like 6 '2", 6 '3", maybe. Yeah. I mean, I think Steph and I are more like seven. I think Steph is like 6 '2". But you know 6 '3", sound good. Yeah, they're two totally different players, though. Totally. Totally different. Steph is more of a shooter. Because Steph ain't really trying to dominate the ball. Steph going to get off the ball. Yeah, because he can shoot that thing. He going to get off the ball and take off running. He going to run from one baseline. Yeah. Hey, somebody going to be setting the pick at the baseline?
30:22Shannon Sharpe:If there was a bigot, Kevon Looney or a cheap shot or what's the other guy? Andrew Bogut. Somebody going to be able to set a pick for him. He will come off that pen down or he will come off a flare and going to let it go. You already know it. Hey, and it's going to be cash money. Yeah. Cash money. Best to do it. But no, I just don't see it, Monte. I think you're a tremendous player. You had a great career. But I don't see it. Well, you know what? We'll never know. But I sure wish you were there instead of Steph Curry because LeBron would have had two championships, I know, for damn sure.
31:09Shannon Sharpe:Well, he got one. That 2015, he got that with two. And he got more because guess what? KD wasn't going there. Yeah, yeah. So LeBron had about four championships. so that he'd have about seven now. Yeah. Damn. So he'd have had those four in Cleveland. He got two. And who knows? He might have stayed. Kyrie might have wanted to stay. Might have been more enticing for Dan Gilbert to let Kyrie have some of the perks that he gave old Goat James and not just shut it down. Damn. Let the man have something.
31:49Shannon Sharpe:But no, I don't.
31:53Shannon Sharpe:I don't see that. I just don't. I wish I could agree with you, Montae, but I can't. Yeah, me neither. A Bills fan went viral for posts showing awful obstructed seats at the new Highmark Stadium. Look at this. Ocho, look at this.
32:11Joe Johnson:Can you see this? Yeah, I can see it a little bit. They don't like the seats? Half the view, part of the view. You can't see the other end. Look at that. Hey, most of the time, if it's constructed like that, they have a enormous jumbotron. That ain't no jumbotron. Oh, it ain't?
32:30Shannon Sharpe:The jumbotron is normally high above. So it ain't got nobody view. That's a wall. That's a concrete barrier. That's blocking view.
32:38Joe Johnson:Yeah, and matter of fact, in those seats too, Uncle Joe, those seats, I'm assuming those tickets will be very, very, very inexpensive to be able to sit that high up.
32:48Shannon Sharpe:You do realize that's a PSL. I got to pay to own those seats and then I got to pay for the tickets. This ain't no new stadium. That's a brand new stadium. They just built it. They going into it this year. Damn. I don't know who designed this, but that's some bulljive.
33:06Joe Johnson:They probably want to think you're right. You got to look at the blueprint man.
33:10Shannon Sharpe:I understand that man. Who called this bro, I mean, so how the people that are sitting right there, Ocho, how they supposed to see the other half of the field? And then the other one is even worse than that.
33:24Joe Johnson:That's crazy. Ocho, look how much of the field is blocked. Hold on. We got to be careful. We got to be careful, too. With this actual pitcher, I would need to be at the stadium to make sure this ain't being exaggerated and that's not really a seat. I'm just saying, that looked pretty high up and don't look like in those seats right there. I could be wrong I could be wrong but listen
33:48Shannon Sharpe:that one on the left that one right over here Ocho you don't see them seats backed up to that wall where the hell you looking at put the hand over the good eye maybe you see better out the bad eye hey
34:00Joe Johnson:you see you see the you see the railing yes it wouldn't be ain't the that stairs right there somebody standing with the stairs at the seats go all the way up and you sit you got to sit down they it look like They're standing on the stairway and taking a picture purposely to make it look like you can't see. That just me. Are you looking at this one? Yeah, I'm looking at the one right there on the screen. It looked like they... See? I guarantee you I'm right. I think they did that on purpose to make it seem like you can't see, but I guarantee you that's the stairway to walk up and go further out.
34:39Joe Johnson:Go to the concession stand or to the bathroom. That's not exactly where the seats are. in 2026 there's no way a brand new stadium has a view like that blocking from one end where you can't see when the team is on the opposite side I'm gonna take your word
34:50Shannon Sharpe:for it Ocho well if somebody else give us some but it look like I can see some seats right there yes sir so we we go we go see oh yeah
35:06Shannon Sharpe:I mean other than that it look like it's a pretty nice stadium oh yeah I gotta go check it out the rich stadium go ahead
35:12Joe Johnson:what you said, Ocho? I said, I'm going to go check it out. I'm going to go. Hold on. Let me see. All right. Don't go in there.
35:20Shannon Sharpe:They slam your ass on the table and suplex you on the table. Hey, that'd be fun.
35:23Joe Johnson:Hey, that'd be fun. We should go do that. No, ain't no we. You. Hey, Joe, you want to go to the Buffalo game, Joe, and jump off the thing like wrestling?
35:32Shannon Sharpe:Nah, I go to the game, but I ain't doing no damn jumping off on them tables.
35:36Joe Johnson:They be setting the tables on fire, Joe, and be on fire. Hey, I'm doing that. Hey, Buffalo fans, Hey, I'm going to come to a game. I want to jump on the table with the fire and stuff.
35:48Shannon Sharpe:That'd be dope. That'd be fun, Joe. Hey, they support. Hey, charity, your charity, something go wrong, you get injured. Hey, man, that's one thing about the Bills fans.
35:57Joe Johnson:They show up for. Hey, Joe, them Bills fans, that might be the best fan base in all of sports. You think so? What? When it comes to not only supporting their players, by supporting other team players when something has happened or there's a charity going on, they all come together as one and don't... Oh, man. Buffalo sits at the top. They sit at the top.
36:19Shannon Sharpe:Somebody had beat somebody and it knocked them out of the playoffs and Buffalo was able to get in. They sent the quarterback like$400 ,000,$500 ,000 to his favorite charity. Oh, yeah.
36:30Joe Johnson:They don't play. Buffalo fans, they've always been pure class, though. They've always been pure class. They might have a lot of fun in that tailgating, but they've always been class.
36:43Shannon Sharpe:Thurman and Patty, I know you guys watching. And you live in Buffalo, and I know you guys. Hey, give me a picture. Hey, let me know for real, Thurman. Text me and let me know if the stadium really like this. Patty, I know you probably haven't been to the stadium. Text me and let me know. You and Thurman get on here and text me and let me know. Y 'all probably, y 'all ain't sleep, Thurman. Maybe your old ass is asleep. Patty you not asleep though Patty
37:11Shannon Sharpe:cause they'll know that's one thing cause they go to a lot of the games as a matter of fact they still live in Buffalo so but no you know what Ocho what's happening I'm looking and see I don't know
37:32Joe Johnson:I guarantee you I guarantee you somebody posted it on purpose standing on the stairs where that railing is just to make it seem like you can't see. I guarantee I'm right.
37:40Shannon Sharpe:Okay. I'm going to take your word for it, Ocho. We'll see. Hey, guess what?
37:47Shannon Sharpe:Somebody, we're going to find out in the next week or so. The next couple of days, somebody's going to go and be in the stadium. You know what? The preseason starts like Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday. So we're going to find out as soon as they play. Wait, preseason starts this Wednesday? Well, it already, you know, they had the Hall of Fame game last Thursday. Yeah, I know that one. I'm talking about everybody else. Everybody else starts playing, yes.
38:09Joe Johnson:Finally. No, not Thursday.
38:10Shannon Sharpe:They start Thursday. Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday. Okay, okay, okay, okay.
38:13Joe Johnson:Either way, I'm ready. I'm ready. Hey, Joe, when them Cowboys play, Joe?
38:19Shannon Sharpe:I got a check as far as preseason. We normally start off on the West Coast because, you know, we typically be out there in San Diego somewhere. You know, we got that L.A. Y 'all at Oxnard. Where we at? Oxnard. Where is that? Oxnard, California. North. It's up. It's about, you know, probably about Iowa outside. Yeah, that's typically where they start at, though, where we started. Hey, Portlandia fans. Carrie Brownstein and Fred Armisen here. You know us, or rather, you know them. Tony and Candace, Nina and Lance, Spike, and yes, the chicken. We've played a lot of iconic characters over the years, but today we're showing up as ourselves to tell you about Podlandia, AO Rewatch, our brand new podcast.
38:58Each week, we'll revisit an episode of Portlandia from the very beginning, breaking down the sketches, exploring the backstories of our most iconic characters, revisiting the Portland locations you know and love, and opening up about our creative process. How did any of this get made? Why do we think that was a good idea? We're ready to talk about it. And we'll also be joined by the people who helped bring it all to life. Guest stars, collaborators, and friends, including director Jonathan Kreisel, the mayor himself, Kyle McLaughlin, legendary musician Amy Mann, and many more. Kyle is going for it here.
39:31You fully improvised, not just words, but a song, a melody. Well, I thought he was going to write, I thought you were all going to write a song. I remember you thinking that. Listen to Podlandia Ayo Rewatch on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. On Solita, we share the messy stories of traveling alone as a woman. Your Duolingo is not going to come back to you when a man is inside of you. Oh, no. I'm Julie Pinheiro, and I travel by myself because it's a rare space where I can say yes without asking anyone else first. I'm on a mission to reclaim the word Solita, trading the pity for possibility.
40:16Every time I tried to be alone, I kept meeting people and they were like, you smiled at us. Not a lot of people smile around here. I can wait four hours for the next bus or this random dude is offering me a ride on his motorcycle. It's when you're alone that you're most receptive to the world as it is and not the lies you're sold about it. So whether you're a solo travel veteran or you're too nervous to book your first trip, I hope you listen to Solita on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
41:10Seth Rollins. What are you doing with my belt? To Alex Rodriguez. Just to let you people know, we're talking to one of the goats here. To Bill Burr. I don't think I've ever met somebody so exactly out of their mind as I am. And now, we even have more great guests coming up, including the great John Turturro.
41:27Joe Johnson:It's called happiness. Delivering happiness. Mariano Rivera. Oh my God. And many, many more. 42:39I'm Nancy Glass, host of the Burden of Guilt Season 3 podcast. This is a story about a horrendous situation that destroyed two families. It started more than seven years ago when Cindy and Kenny were two 40-somethings who had just gotten engaged. Days later, they walked into a scorched-earth war they never saw coming.
43:02Joe Johnson:Turn around and place your hands behind your back. The cops gave it to my house and threw me in jail. And to Cindy's surprise, her fiance, Kenny, was charged with abusing one of her children. I never once doubted Kenny, and I always doubted the accusation. On season three of Burden of Guilt, you'll hear a story about the lengths someone will go to in order to get what they want. This case has got to be one of the most despicable. Listen to season three of Burden of Guilt on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Yeah.
43:44Shannon Sharpe:All right, hold on. Jalen Brown did not hold back in the 76ers introductory press conference speaking openly about his lack of communication with Jason Tatum. Let's take a listen to what he had to say.
43:58Joe Johnson:Jalen, how would you describe, characterize your relationship with Jason over the last year, Jason Tatum? And is that a partnership you both wanted to continue before the trade? You know, we won a championship together. So anybody that you want a championship, you would think like that's what, you know, a brotherhood or a lifelong legacy would entail. Obviously, there's ups and downs in any type of relationship for sure. But on my end, it's nothing but respect. You know, besides when he plays the Sixers, you know, I hope he does well. You know, but other than that, you know, everything for me is just based in respect.
44:38Have you guys been able to talk? Not really.
44:45Joe Johnson:Joe? Yeah, Joe, that's for you to answer. I don't understand it. That's too cryptic for me.
44:52Shannon Sharpe:Listen I think they both on two different pages man living two different lives you know JB ain't got no kids Uncle Ocho JT got two kids you know beautiful wife wife girlfriend yeah yeah yeah they living two totally different lives bro you know and it's okay that they don't hang out outside that or they haven't really talk. Hey, man, this is a part of the journey, bro. It is. It hurts sometimes, you know, playing on teams and then you get traded. Obviously, you leave behind guys who you've been playing with for eight, seven, nine years. You know what I mean? But at the same time, this is our profession, bro.
45:36Shannon Sharpe:This is what we signed up for. This is part of it. You know what I mean? I think they make it. We are trying to make a big deal about Jason Tatum and JB. But for me, man, I don't even really feel like there's no huge... I don't feel like there's no big deal. They were two great players to want a title together. And a lot of times great players don't be hanging out. And it's okay. I'm okay with that, especially in basketball. Now, basketball, because you guys are together a little bit more than we are, Joe. I mean, y 'all on the road all the time. Y 'all close-knit and so forth and so on. Man, I ain't, look.
46:11Shannon Sharpe:And we can be cordial, but I don't mean we got, I mean, ain't like I'm over the history. I don't know if Michael and Scotty is come to find out they were not as together or as close or as mesh as people might have thought. Yeah. I don't know. I don't know.
46:30Joe Johnson:Hey, Uncle Joe, people got to remember now, you got to remember, a lot of people in the chat, you know, y 'all have jobs, you go to work and you know what? You ain't friends with everybody at your own job. You know, you go in there with a job to do. It's the same thing with sports. You're not going to get along with everybody. If you happen to meet someone, you know, and y 'all get along outside of your job and decide to hang out, that's cool. But I'm there to do one thing. Bring an NBA championship to Boston. Now, if Jason Tatum and Jayden Brown happen to be friends and become friends outside of the game of basketball and their duties that they're supposed to do for the Celtics, then so be it.
47:08Joe Johnson:But everybody ain't going to be buddy-buddy.
47:10Shannon Sharpe:I just think they're two different people.
47:12Joe Johnson:That's just the nature of the business in general.
47:14Shannon Sharpe:I really do, Joe. I just think they're two different people. I don't really think that. Honestly, other than basketball, tell me what you think they two have in common.
47:29Shannon Sharpe:They probably don't. They probably don't have much in common. I mean, you go to work and say, hey, Bob, how you doing? I hate you, motherfucking ass.
47:39Shannon Sharpe:You do. But then the question is, okay, the communication. what would the communication entail what did the other expect from the other
47:52Joe Johnson:what does that even talk about in general
47:55Shannon Sharpe:I'm trying to win I'm trying to be the best I can be you try to be the best you can be hopefully we can come together and for one shining moment they won a championship together yeah no matter what JB did there were very few people that thought he was a better player than JT. Even after he won Eastern Conference MVP, even after he won Finals MVP, even after he took this team, what he averaged, 28 points a game, even though he got this team to the number two seed, they let Al Horford go, they let Holiday go. Jason Taylor was gone except for the last 20 games. in his mind, me, I'm just psychoanalyzing.
48:44Shannon Sharpe:I'm from the back. Right. It was just hard. Like, man, I don't know what I can do for people to see me. First of all, you take two, you take, first of all, it's three guys. I know for a fact, even if you say I'm not better than JT, I'm better than the other two guys that you put on the Olympic team. Right. I just think they thought that the question, and I asked you this, Joe, about a month ago. I said had the roles been reversed, JT goes there, and he's getting DMPs. Does he handle it in the same manner as with JT handling it?
49:26Joe Johnson:No, sir. You don't think so? JB? Hold on, hold on, hold on, Uncle Joe. Now, the problem was not even going, not even being selected, not even being thought of, or having two people that you felt you were better than going there before you. But you think not only if you do get selected, you're going to have a problem with the DNPs as well? Yeah, because they're going to say, why you brought your problem over here
49:48Shannon Sharpe:if you weren't going to play me? Look who's in front of him. Ain't nothing to do with it. Look who's in front of him. How you going to complain? Let me ask you a question. Who are they supposed to sit down for you? When you went to the Pro Bowl, you was okay? They said, well, look who in front of you, Ocho. You're like, hold on, I'm Ocho. Yeah, and that's why I was starting. You know what I'm saying? But so when he, that's how he looks at it, though. He's like, who the finalist MVP?
50:16Joe Johnson:Okay, I see you.
50:17Shannon Sharpe:Who did that?
50:18Joe Johnson:Who the Eastern Conference MVP? Who did that? Hey, can I ask you something, though? Hey, I'm a joke. Even with the accolades, even as well as he played, right? Let's say he was selected, you know, to go play and represent the USA. say, please tell me the player that is supposed to sit on the bench for him. I'm just curious. Who's sitting down to let this play?
50:39Shannon Sharpe:See, you think it logical. But when you're a supreme athlete, you don't think logical.
50:44Joe Johnson:Well, even as a supreme athlete, I have to understand who's better than me.
50:49Shannon Sharpe:And if you don't think none of them better than him. Ochoa. Yeah, because think about it. Even though you do have Durant and LeBron playing that same position, I mean, you can't I can't find three, four minutes for you, boy. I can't get this. How many, Joe? Three, four minutes? I just want to touch the flow. Let me run a couple wind sprints. Come on, man. You done brought me way over here. Way over here. You mean tell me you can. Come on, man. Come on, Joe. Now you got me sitting on the bench like I'm the level 12th man in an NBA game. Right. Hey, Joe. I see how y 'all, how they be sitting. They be sitting at it like this here like, damn.
51:24Shannon Sharpe:I hope I get it in the night. and the man say hold on wait a damn minute
51:31Joe Johnson:I like JV man I like JV he's very controversial without being controversial it's just the way he conducts himself the way he talks his wording, his sentence structure he is the smartest one in the room he is at times if you listen to him talk
51:51Shannon Sharpe:yeah it's going to be interesting the question is
52:01Shannon Sharpe:do you believe JT could have done more to talk to Boston to keep JB
52:10Shannon Sharpe:I don't think so I think they were going to part ways from him because one they didn't want to have to pay him all that damn money they knew they were going to have to pay him I mean at the end of the day that's what it basically came down to. You know what I mean? But all this rumbling behind it has kind of got stirred up. But at the end of the day, man, they got too much money tied up in the two guys. Yeah. But that's what happened when you do a great job of drafting Ocho and Joe. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, hell, ain't you got a championship?
52:44Joe Johnson:And you know what else, too? Jason Tatum might not want to stand on the table for him anyway, as well as he played when he was out. Maybe. Maybe. I'm just saying, you know. And I don't think there's anything that J.B. could have done that could change the way people feel about him.
53:05Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. Nothing. He thought after the way he played this year, that would ingratiate him more to the organization. Because I think the fans appreciate him and know what he ranked. But he thought the way he played this year would ingratiate him more with the organization, and it did this the opposite.
53:27Joe Johnson:Yeah. It probably was worse. Probably. It even got worse because he played so well. So who do you think is going to be? Go ahead, Joe. I think because he came out and made those statements
53:40Shannon Sharpe:and said that this was his best season, he had the most fun this season. So everybody kind of took that as like a little slap, and I think they've been giving him, they've been giving him, you know, some backlash behind that. But, hey, man, the young man ain't going to come ready to play. Because the thing is, when you get in that position, they parse everything that you say. Yes, sir. Been there. We know that, Ocho. And the little business that we in, everything that we say, they pick apart. Yeah.
54:09Joe Johnson:Hey, you know what JB reminded me of a little bit? I think some people in the chat probably won't get it, you know, based on their age. Remember good times? Remember how when Mike would be militant at times? That's what JB reminded me of a little bit. You're right. Joe, who do you... Go ahead, Jocho. Finish up. No, no, that's it. I was just thinking about that.
54:33Shannon Sharpe:Which superstar do you believe is under the most pressure? First you, Joe, and then Ocho. Jason Tatum or Luca? I got Luca, man. Luca.
54:48Shannon Sharpe:No LeBron. Man, he carried a lot of weight over the past, what, eight, nine years that he was in L.A. And we're going to have to see if Luka, man, can stay healthy for a whole 82 and have like an MVP-type season. Yeah, I mean, because he is tremendous throughout the regular season when he plays. He led the league in scoring. So I think the most pressure is on him. And they in L.A., bro. Come on, man. What are we talking about? He in La La Land. Come on, man.
55:21Joe Johnson:Ain't nothing going on down there. What you mean? Man, listen. Man, Luka over there, they got a team constructed of K-pop, Backstreet Boys, and NSYNC. Talk about, man, come on, man. But that's what, look.
55:33Shannon Sharpe:They built that team. Ramona Shelbourne laid it out. She said, I mean, what she reported is that they put things together at Craig's. They went to Craig and they laid it out. They said, we're going to have LeBron James money to come out the book, and we'll be able to build this roster to your liking, to your specifications. You know, if you get a custom car, they'll build it to your specs. How fast do you want it to go? What type of engine? You want a V8? You want a V12? You want a twin turbo? You want electric? Whatever you want to be. Whatever the interior. Resto mod. Cut the doors. What is it that you want?
56:16Shannon Sharpe:So they built this team. This Lakers team is to Luka Doncic's specifications.
56:28Shannon Sharpe:The Celtics not built to Jason Tatum. They just got up off of JB. He wanted a big. They could do big in the pick and roll. They get Walker Kessler. He said, I want A.R. back. A.R. is back on a four-year,$140-something million contract. Yep. I want shooters.
56:54Shannon Sharpe:What is it about Rui? I mean, they signed somebody that wasn't as good as Rui in the regular season or the postseason. And gave more than what Rui got going to the Clippers.
57:05Shannon Sharpe:So, I hope it works out for him. I'm a Luka. I'm not as big as Luca fan as I am a LeBron fan, obviously. But, hey. So what, you a Philly fan now, huh? Yeah.
57:23Shannon Sharpe:Ain't no secret. Ain't no secret. The chat, no.
57:33Shannon Sharpe:A noticeably slimmer Joel Embiid is going viral. One executive bluntly stated they don't trust him at all when discussing Embiid's health and availability. Embiid has played just over 50 % of the regular season games since entering the NBA in 2014. He's played 490 out of 965 possible games. Joe, with Bron, Max, and JB around him, if Embiid can stay healthy, stay in this kind of shape, can they win the title? Yeah, they can win. I told you on Ocho, man, I said, listen, If I'm Bruin, this is before he committed. I said, man, I'm on the phone with MB. Come to find out what happened, Ocho. Bruin went and met with MB.
58:14Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, because he's the catalyst to whatever it is that Philly's trying to do. Yep, Maxi going to be great. Edgecombe going to be great. JB going to be great. LeBron going to be great. But if this man right here, he look good. He look like he in great shape. I hope he can get up and down the court with this. But if he can keep this up, Ojo, he in great shape, and he's back to where he's virtually unguardable. They're looking at his left knee, Ojo. What you think?
58:46Shannon Sharpe:Hey, Ojo, I'm going to send you about 50K, man. I need you to go put it down on Philly. I think I'm going to put them on Philly to win it. Ooh, boy. Man, 50K, you know what that'll be? I think they're already plus 900. What that'll pay me out? Let me look it up right quick. Because I don't know how everybody thinks Philly going to be slow. Boy, they boy finna cut up. All right.
59:13Joe Johnson:They finna cut up, Ojo. Listen, it look good on paper. Everything look good on paper until it's time to play. All right. Now, we haven't seen them play. We've seen teams constructed that we thought were going to be all world. Hell, when I thought Kyrie and goddamn James Harden and Kevin Durant and Brooklyn, and I thought Brooklyn was going to win them a goddamn title. You know? Based on the names. Now, we got to see how them boys play. I'm sure at some point, you know, you have training camp. $450 ,000, Joe. Oh, yeah, Joe. I'm going to send you$50 ,000.
59:47Shannon Sharpe:So you get your$50 ,000 back, and you win$450 ,000. So you'd be plus$450 ,000.
59:55Joe Johnson:Hey, Joe, I'm going to send you$50 ,000, Joe. You going to send me$50 ,000? Yeah, yeah, play that for me, boy.
1:00:02Shannon Sharpe:What you sending it to me for? You need to send Unk in Vegas. I'm sending mine to Unk so he can go play it. Y 'all want to get Unk popped, not Unk.
1:00:13Shannon Sharpe:Hey, I'm going to break you off, though. We win. I'm going to break you off. You know what I mean? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
1:00:17Joe Johnson:I'm going to give you something, too.
1:00:19Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. So we get him 100. We get him 100. How I get to be the bookie? You going to get it? You going to get it? I'm going to give you 150. I'm going to give you 150. I win. You in Vegas. Yeah, hook me up. Lord, have mercy.
1:00:37Joe Johnson:Yeah. Well, hell, Joe, I'm going to save my money. Just slide me something when you win.
1:00:41Shannon Sharpe:All right, bet. I got Joe, Joe. I got you.
1:00:44Joe Johnson:I don't need nothing, but just send me five dollars.
1:00:46Shannon Sharpe:So you have no concerns about his left knee? Because I think that's the knee that he wears the knee brakes on also. Well, I got to see him move, and I got to see him getting up and down. I got to see his gallop. I got to see how he run. Hey, I got to see how he transitioned from offense to defense. You know what I mean? Like a pitcher telling me one thing, but I got to see some movement, man. I got to see what them feet look like. You know what I mean? Yeah. So, I guess, you know, when training camp come around, I'm sure the cameras will be on Philly. But he look good, though. He looks slim. Yeah, he definitely looks good.
1:01:20Shannon Sharpe:He definitely looks better. Yeah, got some nice definition to him, man. Hey, hey, hey. But I never concern myself with a guy working out the offseason because it's easy. It's to make those decisions. Can you make those same decisions when you don't have a chef that's traveling with you? And you get into that city at 2 o 'clock in the morning, Joe. Yep, and you got to eat them Zuzuz and win-win. Yeah, you eating pizza. You eating fried chicken. And pizza and french fries. Yeah. Bag the chips on the plane. And then finna go right to sleep. You know how it go. And them chips say, yeah, I think I'll stay right here, right here, right now.
1:01:53Shannon Sharpe:I ain't going nowhere. Yeah. You done ate four bags of chips. That's 900 calories. Come on, man. Come on, man. Oh, man. Honestly?
1:02:05Joe Johnson:Honestly? Honestly, no one wants to think about HIV, but there are things that everyone can do to help prevent it. Things like PrEP. PrEP stands for pre-exposure prophylaxis, and it means routinely taking prescription medicine before you're exposed to HIV to help reduce your chances of getting it. PrEP can be about 99 % effective when taken as prescribed. It doesn't protect against other STIs, though, so be sure to use condoms and other healthy sex practices. Ask a health care provider about all your prevention options and visit findoutaboutprep.com to learn more. Sponsored by Gilead. Hey, Portlandia fans.
