In short
This episode is a “best of NBA news” discussion focused on the 2025 draft and related league storylines. Hosts debate Bleacher Report’s ranking of every No. 1 overall pick since 2000, arguing LeBron James should be #1 and challenging placements like DeAndre Ayton over Kenyon Martin. They also react to the reported draft outcome: AJ Dybantsa (6'9 forward, BYU) being selected No. 1 overall by the Washington Wizards, with Darren Peterson (6'5 guard, Kansas) going No. 2, Cameron Boozer (6'8, Duke) No. 3, and Caleb Wilson (6'9, Chicago Bulls) also mentioned.
Key claims
Dybantsa’s “total package” fit with Trey Young and Anthony Davis means Washington can make a major Eastern Conference jump; the pressure of being a No. 1 pick is huge but Dybantsa is expected to contribute efficiently (roughly 16–20 points).
Notable examples
LeBron’s record-breaking career is cited as exceeding expectations; Derrick Rose is argued to deserve a higher ranking.

2:13Shannon Sharpe:Learn why at tearthepaperceiling.org. Brought to you by Opportunity at Work and the Ad Council.
2:23Shannon Sharpe:All right, Joe. Let me know what you think. The Bleacher Report ranked every number one pick since 2000. The top 10 are LeBron James at one, Wimby at two, AD at three, Dwight Howard at four, Kyrie at five, Cat at six, Ant-Man at seven, Yao Ming at eight, Blake Griffin at nine, Cade Cunningham at ten. And then you go Derrick Rose, Zion Williamson, John Wall, Cooper Flagg, Paulo Banquero, Ben Simmons, DeAndre Ayton, Kenya Martin, Andrew Bogut, Andrew Wiggins. Oh, damn, they kept going. Greg Oden, Andre Bargnani, Markel Fultz, Zachariah Richard, Kwame Brown, and Anthony Bennett. Man, ain't no way in hell I'm putting DeAndre Ayton in front of Kenyon Martin.
3:18Shannon Sharpe:No way in hell.
3:19Chad Johnson:Where they got Kenyon at?
3:20Shannon Sharpe:They got Kenyon at 18. They got DeAndre Aiden at 17. Come on, Joe. Come on, Joe.
3:28Chad Johnson:They doing too much, Joe. Hey, listen, listen. Hey, Kenyon. Everybody know, man, Kenyon was a dog boy in college. Yeah. He probably one of the only guys who really, at that time, he probably hadn't been a four-year guy. He's the last guy to be a senior and come out. And come out and go number one. And go number one overall. Yeah, that's rare, bro. That don't happen. Yeah, yeah. Well, you know, this list can fluctuate. You know, some can stay, but it can fluctuate a little bit. I don't know how, but I probably moved Derrick Rose up on the list a little bit considering the fact that he from Chicago.
4:00Chad Johnson:They drafted him number one. He wore number one. He was the youngest MVP. I like Derrick Rose to probably move up a little bit on that list.
4:09Shannon Sharpe:I mean, Paolo Bancaro, I mean, he was an all-star. And y 'all got Cooper Flagg in front of him? Yeah.
4:18Chad Johnson:Hey, hey. Give or take. I mean, they got a lot of, look, LeBron was rookie of the year.
4:26Shannon Sharpe:Whitman Yama was rookie of the year.
4:28Chad Johnson:It don't get much better. Harry, Cat, I think Ant-Man. You know it don't get no better than LeBron is because Cleveland had the number one pick. I mean, and then for him to turn out to be what he is today, like, you ain't never going to be, he always going to be number one. Yeah, he is. Yeah, it's crazy.
4:49Shannon Sharpe:Because even though the expectations you had for him, he exceeded those.
4:54Chad Johnson:Hello. He did, bro.
4:56Shannon Sharpe:Let that sink in for just a second. Whatever expectation you had, y 'all think he's going to be great. Did you anticipate the most points ever? Yeah, no. No. Did you anticipate most points, top five in assists, most career playoff games, most career playoff points, second most playoff career triple-dope? But everything, I mean, finals MVP with three different teams, lead three different teams to the NBA finals. So whatever you had for him, he exceeded it. So I agree with you. I mean, if you have an all-time, he might be, if you rank all the number one overall draft picks, you throw Magic in there, you throw Kareem in there, LeBron still going to probably be number one.
5:43Shannon Sharpe:Hello. I'm with you. I'm with you when you're right now. Because I think those would be the only two that's even in the conversation. We're not even putting nobody else in the conversation. Right. No, we're not putting Kent Benson, and we're not putting Joe Barry Carroll, and we're not putting there a lot of guys. I'm not going to name them. Look, congratulations. Being number one overall draft pick is a huge, huge accomplishment.
6:06Chad Johnson:Man.
6:07Shannon Sharpe:Everybody, the mere fact that you're on this list, think about it. All the players that's been, number one, there's only one of those per year. for 80 years.
6:16Chad Johnson:I bet it comes with a lot of weight and pressure too, boy.
6:20Shannon Sharpe:Yes, for sure.
6:21Chad Johnson:Because I think if you're the number one pick, boy, the bullseye on your back is so big. You're supposed to be franchise altering.
6:28Shannon Sharpe:You're supposed to be a hydrogen bomb. That's what you're supposed to be.
6:35Chad Johnson:Yeah, and when guys play against you, you're going to always get their best game.
6:39Shannon Sharpe:Absolutely.
6:40Chad Johnson:I'm talking about you. I can make a name for myself off of you. There you go. It just takes one game. That's it. Go ahead, Ocho. What's up? I was going to say, but you think the Bonds are ready for all that, Joe? Yeah, he's ready for it, Ocho. Hey, Joe, this ain't college. Now this ain't BYU. We talking about we plan to get grown men that got families to feed now. Yeah, but these kids built a little different, Ocho. You know, I think they prepared for the moment. You know, they love the bright lights, the big stage. You know, he already has a nice NBA body at 6 '9". He got the total package, bro.
7:13Chad Johnson:I'm telling you. He going to be nice. I just, I hope what I envision is that Trey and AD guide him along the way, help him be a great player. You know what I mean? Because it's different sometimes, Uncle Ochoa, when you got guys like Trey, you know, he just got his money, congrats. But, you know, he trying to prove that he is worth$212 million. Sometimes, you know, you can kind of lose sight of what you really just need to bring. You know what I mean? Same thing with AD. He trying to get a new contract. So, you know, and adding A.J. DeBasa in the middle of that, I just think it's a perfect piece, you know, if those guys do it the right way.
7:54Chad Johnson:And I'm going to be watching the Wizards this year, man. That boy, he can go, man. I thought – hold on. Lakers, Lakers.
8:04Shannon Sharpe:What pick were the Lakers?
8:17Shannon Sharpe:okay the Lakers took Cameron Carr what pick was that Ash the 24th pick okay Cameron Carr okay My bad. My bad. I apologize, Chad. I don't know why I say Sergio Delaria. The Lakers take Cameron Carr with the 24th pick. So did they move back in the draft? Or they were always 24th? They were 25th. Okay. Oh, okay. Okay. Okay. So that's why. Okay. Okay. I apologize, Shat.
8:57Chad Johnson:Yeah. I don't think you're looking at it, though. Yeah, I think, hey, look, some of these guys who went late in this first round, man, you go into great opportunities and show up and show out, Argonne Ojo. Yeah. Depending on where you went, huh? Hey, man, listen, you get to win early in your career. You get to play on great teams. And then if you have the potential to be who they think you can be, hey, man, I've seen some guys, you know, go in them late first rounds and be Hall of Famers.
9:24Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. Tarsh Reed, I like him going to San Antonio for the simple fact, oh, Joe, he can't be worse than Cornette.
9:36Shannon Sharpe:They got a 16 center. Hey, come on, don't do him like that. Man, Cornette was terrible.
9:46Shannon Sharpe:I think they used to have a Coronet paper towel Chad didn't they used to have a Coronet paper towel
9:50Chad Johnson:Oh man come on
9:53Shannon Sharpe:With a Who was that She was a comedian She was a singer That used to advertise For Coronet paper towels Who was that Chad I know y 'all know And look and see They didn't have a Coronet paper towel I'm almost certain they did
10:08Chad Johnson:Yeah this was a nice draft man I got to come out there and check these boys out in Vegas, man.
10:16Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. Yeah. I know. I know. Who's the lady that did the commercial? She had black hair. I can't think of that lady's name. I was a kid when that was out. Rosemary Clooney. That's who it was. See that with Puyo Tide. See what I'm saying, Joe? Hey, Rosemary, old Rosemary. Yeah, I do. I say there's a paper towel called Rosemary Clooney. Yep. But this list, like I said, I am not putting DeAndre Oton over Kenya Martin. And Kenya Martin came back from micro-faction. People don't realize, Kenya Martin used to jump out the gym, a hell of a defensive player, and he wasn't no hell of a – I mean, he wasn't no – he was just a grown man.

11:09Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. Right. He was a senior. he wasn't a freshman he wasn't a sophomore or junior he was a senior he was slight build but he was strong
11:19Chad Johnson:in a dog mentality
11:22Shannon Sharpe:because you had to be think about what you were battling back then you were battling grown men you gotta battle big big bodies back then not these stretches hey Dirk was really the only stretch you back then. Everybody else, they bang. Yeah.
11:44Chad Johnson:Hey, you had to have that dog mentality. Them boys trying to go through you, boy.
11:48Shannon Sharpe:Yes, sir.
11:49Chad Johnson:Yeah.
11:56Shannon Sharpe:Sources say Bucks owner Jimmy Haslam, Lord, was the driving force in taking a heat deal for Giannis over Boston's offer. Haslam did not want to risk Jalen Brown wanting out of Milwaukee in a year after dealing with Giannis and Miles Garrett trade demands. Haslam? Damn, Haslam? I forgot he had bought the majority share of the buck. He done traded two places. Oh, anyway, let me finish this right here. Haslam wanted certainty, and Miami Deal provided more than that with the total assets in return to Milwaukee. I get it. Yeah. The last thing I want to do is trade a guy. I'm trading a guy for a guy that's going to want the same thing in a year.
12:37Shannon Sharpe:Yep. What's the same? what's to say Jalen Brown is not going to want to trade? Right. Now what do I do?
12:49Shannon Sharpe:These other guys coming in and telling him, get out of my office. He's coming in and telling me he wanted to trade Cam. What? Bloom.
12:58Chad Johnson:Don't slam. And they know Jalen Brown going to request probably another max contract. Yes. You know, and they know, hell, if we can't get him to agree to a deal on this trade, then when we get him, yeah, in a year, he going to be raising hell. We already know that. You know what? Yeah, you're right, huh? We better deal with Tyler Hero, get Kaleil well over here, some guys who are going to play hard. Tyler Hero from Milwaukee. Hell, so he coming home. Yeah.
13:30Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, he grew up, what, 35, what, 35 miles, 30 miles, 40 miles? Yeah, yeah. from that?
13:38Chad Johnson:Yeah.
13:39Shannon Sharpe:But he probably, home is a great place to visit. I ain't really trying to live there, Joe. You mean to tell me you think I want to leave South Beach and Miami, that weather, for Milwaukee?
13:50Chad Johnson:Hey. I don't know, man. You know, when you from a place, it kind of hit a little different. You know what I mean? Like, he done been in South Beach. Tell me like that. Hey, look, hold on. He done been in South Beach for so long, Uncle Ojo, that it may not be that exciting to him no more. He can still keep his place down there, It's still exciting. I was on TikTok today.
14:12Shannon Sharpe:It still looks exciting to me. I don't know what it look like from what Joe TikTok said. What my TikTok look like, I'll be kicking, popping. You know how to work TikTok? I don't know how to work no TikTok, Ojo. I just made it up. I don't even know how to get on TikTok. If I get on TikTok, I can only get on TikTok when I'm around Jordan. If Jordan ain't around, Hell, I didn't even know I had TikTok. So, no. I just made that up, but I'm just saying, you know, hey, Milwaukee, South Beach. Milwaukee, South Beach. You're right. Ain't no telling what you might see, boy. Yeah. Hey, man, listen. Hey, Joe, I don't really go down that way.
14:55Obviously, I went to school on the beach, high school. In my younger days, Memorial Day weekend, I used to go out there. But, Joe, I ain't been out that way in a long time, boy. Yeah. You ain't been out there, Ocho? Hey, I ain't trying to see nothing out there, huh?
15:08Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, yeah, you don't. You got yourself doing. I mean, Cambodia, she was nice to me, so I like Cambodia. So you need to do right. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm better to do right than do left.
15:19Chad Johnson:You hear me? Yeah, yeah. Hey, man, I already know you a fake right go left ass. Yeah, we already know that. Yeah, yeah. We already know you a magician. Whenever did that? Look right here.
15:30Shannon Sharpe:Look right here. Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding. Right off the screen. I'm right here now. I ain't going nowhere. Hey, hey, hey. We all good. We all good. Oh, damn. We going to see what I'm saying, Joe. What did I tell you not to tell him? Hey. Get back. Now, you know this man can't hold water.
15:48Chad Johnson:Hey, man. Hey, I hear that man. I hear that man talking about Ronaldo today. How I seen Ronaldo cut a rug today. And he went to spill in the bin. He could have. Hey, man. You da-da-da-da. You da-da-da-da-da. I'm like, damn. I told you, Joe. Hey, I just want to make sure we all on the same page now. Hey, listen. Hey, I ain't going to say nothing.
16:11Shannon Sharpe:Don't ever play anything with this man, Chad. I'm telling you, you don't get busked. I'm going to see y 'all, bro. I'm going to see y 'all. Oh, Lord. LeBron James returning to Miami cannot be ruled out per Barry Jackson. He could try to lure impending free agent LeBron James with his full mid-level exception. but Jane's return is considered a long shot though nothing can be ruled out. Damn. Ash, how much is the heat mid-level exception?
16:42Chad Johnson:What's that, by eight?
16:47Shannon Sharpe:So that's, let's see, that's 630 ,000 per million dollars.
16:56Shannon Sharpe:So all things being equal, that's about$5.2 million out of taxes.
17:03Shannon Sharpe:LeBron might say I'm going to go ahead and retire I can draw that my little investments I can get that I can get that a month on my investments
17:12Chad Johnson:you absolutely right that would be a hell of a team for him to be on I ain't finna say nothing but I don't know if he would want to go back and deal with Pat I don't know if he would want to go back and deal with that hey Bron I know you're going to see this
17:34Shannon Sharpe:hey hold on look i think rich had i think rich had some people in tonight's draft uh he hit him up i'm gonna try to get him i'm gonna try to get rich on
17:43Chad Johnson:yeah get him on he said he said he wanted to come on so yeah but uh man hey i don't know but y 'all do know that's the eastern conference now bro come over there they can they can run the East, they can be one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference now. We gonna run it if he don't come. No, y 'all ain't running nothing with y 'all mouth. I told you we got one more thing up our sleeve. Let it play out, man. Let it play out. I ain't never steered you wrong, Joe. Okay. You hear me?
18:13Shannon Sharpe:Oh, the mid-level exception, 15 million. I might work with that. Hey, Joe, Joe, I might work with that. 15 million? It's 630 ,000 every million. So, 10, that'll be 600. That'll be 6.3 million with another 5, 6, 6, 6, 6, 5, 3. That's about roughly about 10. After taxes, we're looking at about 10.2 million. Yeah, we good. 10.2 million. Braun back to the heat, huh?
18:47Chad Johnson:Ain't gonna lie.
18:48Shannon Sharpe:Nah, Pat. Nah, you don't try to pull a rank on me. I'm good.
18:53Chad Johnson:Hold on, hold on. Hold on. We going to let back on be back on. No, I ain't letting ish. Hey, you let that go in Cleveland now. And you went back to Cleveland and won a title. Can you imagine? But see, winning a title in Cleveland, that's what made me the GOAT. Right. But think about this. Man, you put him, Giannis, Bam, and you sprinkling some cats around him. Hey, hold on. Don't forget Clay. Oh, my bad. My bad. My bad. My bad. Hey. Hey, I can see that.
19:24Shannon Sharpe:Joe, what about my cookies? That man threw my cookies the way that my chef made. Hey, we trying to win a title, man. And my ice cream. Hey, we trying to win a title. My whole cookie. I mean, my chef, those cookies specials for me, you know I bring my own food on the road, Joe, right? You know that. We trying to get one. And well, you know what I said. Excuse me. Excuse me, Chad. When I'm playing cards, you know, hey. Excuse me. I'm sorry. Hey. Bring no cookies.
19:49Chad Johnson:Hey. That's in the past. We'll get you right, but South Beach gonna be back on fire. That's in the pan, huh? That's in the pan.
20:02Shannon Sharpe:Is this the man that just told me last? Oh, Joe, didn't he tell us the other night? He ain't one of these people to let stuff go? Yeah. Your girl do something, you know, I'm done, I'm out. Yeah, that's him. You told me, Joe.
20:16Chad Johnson:Yeah, it depends on what you do.
20:18Shannon Sharpe:Yeah.
20:19Chad Johnson:Oh, so the cookie... If I leave, you did something pretty bad. Yeah. Yeah. But what can you do to get what what can she do to get you back? Apologize. Yeah. So we have a private conversation. You can't pull that meat up by that hoo-ha though. You can't apologize for that.
20:38Shannon Sharpe:How you apologize for that? Hey, that's two different scenarios. How you apologize for throwing my cookies in the trash? Yeah. Well, cookies and hoo-ha, that's two completely different things. Cookies. What they call that cookie? What do they call the cookie?
20:52Chad Johnson:The hua.
20:53Shannon Sharpe:Oh, okay.
20:55Chad Johnson:Yeah, yeah. He's trying to like, you don't know.
21:00I love the sounds. The buzzing from the stadium. The chanting from the fans. The announcers calling the place. Soccer. Football. It's home. Why do I watch the World Cup? That's like asking me, why do I breathe? I inherited that fandom from my mom. I like watching it with my dad. It's a connecting force. From Futuro Studios, I'm Fernanda Echavarri, and this is American Football, a show about soccer culture in the U.S. and its underdog roots. We go beyond the game to the people and the stories that make it great. A soccer game is a festival. It's not just a game. It's your culture. I took an elbow to my head, which cracked my skull.
21:45It is an American game. The Brazilians don't like hearing that, though. Are they the only ones that don't like that? Nobody likes that. As we get ready for the Men's World Cup this summer, listen to American Football as part of the My Cultura podcast network, available on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
22:09Here's something that should not be as complicated as it is. Getting a racist statue removed. And here's something that should be a whole lot easier than it is. getting a new one put up in its place. As long as there's a politics of race in America, there's going to be a politics of remembering the Civil War.
22:25Shannon Sharpe:To get to school, I had to go down Robert E. Lee Boulevard. To get to the grocery store, I had to go down Jefferson Davis Parkway. If you're a historian and you leave out half of what the history is, you're not doing your job. I'm Akilah Hughes, and Rebel Spirit Season 2 goes deep on both of those things. The fights, the politics, the people who won, and my personal campaign to add something to the Kentucky Statehouse that's actually worth the wall space. We are more than our bodies. We contain essence. We contain spirit. How do you represent that? They are just fueling a fire that is really catching.
22:59You'll see what I mean. Listen to Rebel Spirit Season 2 on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. This is Michael Rappaport, and my podcast, the I Am Rappaport Stereo Podcast, is unlike any one you've ever heard. This kid, Jafar Jackson, is as good as Rami Malek, as Freddie Mercury, and it's as good as Timothee Chalamet, as Bob Dylan. And I say that with love and respect for both of those actors.
23:43And I don't know how many Oscar nominations they give out. I don't know if it's five, six for best actor. 150 % this kid Jafar Jackson should absolutely positively get nominated for his portrayal as Michael Jackson. Listen to I Am Rappaport on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I Am Rappaport Podcast.
24:30Yes.
24:35Chad Johnson:The mountains can come. Part comeback is different, we cannot jump. I'm a footballist. That's the truth. Sharon Escobar. Pollo Diseño. Andas o no con mi rodada. Estás viral con eso. Estás viral. Estás viral. Estás viral. Mandé un mensajito nada más de saludos. Fede Pereira. Si tú dices, no puedo elegir, te los zampas.
24:55Shannon Sharpe:Yo no soy tibio, pero... Andale. Yo me la juego. Si me gusta. Un aplauso. Yo me la juego. And many more. Listen to Sabora Football on the iHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast.
25:11You said to me, yo, you know, keep at it, because you let me rap for you. It was magical for all of us.
25:16Shannon Sharpe:We made it, we made it. Yeah, we made it. I'm like, we? You know, I'm like, I know these guys, but who are you? I'm MC Jin, and this is Laugh But Not Lease. I'll be chatting with guests from all walks of life about the power of humor when it comes to facing difficult times, like the co-founder of Rough Riders, Darren D. Dean. Talking about as a kid, do you remember that we met even way before that? Let me think. Did you walk up to the gate? That was me, D. That was you? That was me. The day we found out that you and the whole crew was at Hit Factory, the mission was to get me to go to the gate, start freestyling, and see if I could get in the studio.
25:51I'm rapping, and then suddenly I hear a voice. Hey, open the gate. Let him in. The gate slowly went. Come, come, come, come, come, come. They all, they're watching this, and they watch me walk into there, and that is a moment that I will remember for the rest of my life. Listen, and last but not least, with MC Jen on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, we'll see Braun in a minute, man. Dive back down in Miami, man. Hey, Clay, I'll let your boy when you touchdown. What?
26:25Shannon Sharpe:The draft board, AJ DeBonza, a 6 '9 forward out of BYU. Number one overall, Darren Peterson, a 6 '5 guard out of Kansas. Kansas, number two, Cameron Boozer, the 6 '8 freshman out of Duke, goes number three, and Caleb Wilson, the Chicago Bulls. Caleb Wilson goes to the Chicago Bulls, a 6 '9 freshman also. A.J. DeBonza, we watched him play. He's unbelievable at handling the ball, something that he spoke about that he wanted to be the number one overall draft pick. Hey, remember, Cooper Flagg was really supposed to be in this draft, Joe Inocho. He reclassified.
27:06Chad Johnson:Yeah, he wouldn't have been the number one pick. I'll tell you that. You don't think so?
27:10Shannon Sharpe:Nah. All I'm saying is he reclassified. He was supposed to be in this draft. He reclassified. That's all I'm saying. I don't know what would or wouldn't happen. That's better than Joe expertise. But when you look at A.J. DeBons, a 6 '9 guy, he's going to what seems to be a pretty decent team. He got Trey Young that recently resigned. We don't know what's going to happen with A.D. It's being reported his agent is looking for a contract. the extension, he may or may not receive, or he may get the extension and then be traded. We don't know. But let's talk about DeBanza and going to the Washington Wizards, Joe.
27:44Shannon Sharpe:What do you like about this move?
27:46Chad Johnson:Man, hey, listen, I love this move, Uncle Ocho, because he's a rookie coming in and playing with, you know, two arguably, not arguably, but Hall of Famers and Anthony Davis and Trey Young. Two guys who can make his, who can really bring out his full game. You know what I mean? it won't be a whole lot of pressure on him to come in and average no 25. You know what I mean? Even though the Wizards haven't been in the postseason the past few years, I'm telling y 'all, I think they can make the biggest jump in the Eastern Conference. If Trey and AD, obviously, if they can stay healthy, I think they got a great chance.
28:22Chad Johnson:They got guys who can score the rock, who can shoot the rock, who can playmake, who can defend. And I just think AJ is a total package, bro. We've been talking about this for the past few months. Now, hell, the past year, everybody knew that man was going to go one. I don't give a damn who had the number one pick. That man was going one. So, great fit. I'm happy for him. I can't wait to see these young dudes in action. Okay, Ocho, you know, the summer league. I'm going to be down there in Vegas for the summer league. I got to go see. Well, let your boy know. Hold on, hold on. Hold on. Y 'all ain't going to leave me.
28:55I'm coming, too. Hey, don't leave me, bro. I'm coming. I always talk about you going to do something.
29:00Shannon Sharpe:You ain't coming because the Summer League going to be going on, Joe, while the... FIBA.
29:06Chad Johnson:The World Cup, yeah. The World Cup. Wait, hold on. Joe, when's the Summer League? What's the date? It starts in July. Early July. July 8th, 9th, all the way to about the 20th or something like that. Okay, okay, okay. I'm going to swing through there. Because remember that by the time it gets to July, remember, it ain't going to be that many games now. So if anything, I'm going to come out there, chill with y 'all. Check out some of the young bucks and see what they can do.
29:32Shannon Sharpe:Hey, Chad, y 'all hear these old two country moms here talking about July? What? It's July. Oh, man, here we go. Here we go. Here we go. July. I already know, you know, Joe, he deep off in Arkansas. Y 'all know Joe country. I'm talking about like Corn Carb and the Our House country. I know that Joe. I'm excited. But, you know, watch the little bit. Look, I tried to catch, obviously, I tried to catch the BYU games when they're on television, watching him because, you know, his projections, and I was at ESPN when he came on and declared where it was going. I'm like, BYU? Then it dawned on him, hey, BYU got money, too.
30:14Shannon Sharpe:They got people that got money, NIL. What? He went to a prep school out there. So it kind of was a natural fit. He's very familiar with that area, very familiar. And, hey, he's like, you know what? But I think Danny Ainge went the highest, but Danny Ainge was also an outstanding baseball player, got drafted, if I'm not mistaken, by the Blue Jays. It's like, look, me going to Duke, me going to North Carolina, what makes me any different than anybody else that's gone there and ended up going number one overall? Absolutely. He wanted to be you. A lot of times you see guys now want to be unique, Ocho and Joe.
30:49Shannon Sharpe:They're like, I want to make my own legacy. Kentucky, Kansas, Duke, all these teams, they got legacies. BYU ain't really got a whole they got Danny Ainge they got Jimmer Ferdinand they got another guy from BYU Danny Ainge, Jimmer Ferdinand Sean Bradley I think so it ain't a whole lot as far as legacy wise with that program I go there I'm automatically a Mount Rushmore player not too many players especially when you're that young had that kind of confidence it doesn't matter where I go to school the show is going to come to me. Wherever I go, that's where I'm going to put butts in to see that. Obviously, the Banzo understand that he's that type of player.
31:32It really didn't matter what school I went to. They was coming to see me regardless.
31:36Chad Johnson:Well, listen, listen.
31:37Shannon Sharpe:I wish you the witness of Battle State.
31:39Chad Johnson:Hey, hey, hey.
31:40Shannon Sharpe:Hey, he still would have went number one. He still would have went number one, Ojo. You're absolutely right.
31:44Chad Johnson:Hey, all that's cute and fine and dandy, but damn it, the bag that BYU was paying, it wasn't many teams willing to pay that. You know, it's reported. that he got seven to eight, seven or eight to nine million, you know, just for that one year. Yeah. Hey, y 'all paying for me to come to prep school down here? I'm at Utah Prep. Hold on, hold on. Now y 'all going to pay for me to go to BYU? What? Yeah. Oh, yeah. I thought, hey, look, I ain't going to lie. I thought the Jazz was going to try to jump through a few hoops tonight to try to be able to draft him. But, hey, man, if Washington made the right pick, okay, I promise you.
32:22Chad Johnson:He liked that, bro.
32:23Shannon Sharpe:And, guys, I think his contract is$69 million for the four years. Yeah. Nice little rookie bag. Yeah. Yeah, nice little rookie bag. Ooh! Nice, nice. And, you know, the story about his father, I think his father's from the Congo. Yeah. And because tonight, hell, I just, obviously I know AJ or our initials, but I really didn't know his name, and he just, like, he wanted the commission to introduce his name in honor of his father because he's a junior. Yeah. I thought that was very, very special to see these young men and to thank all the family, the village that's behind them, that helped push and guide them in the direction that they are and be able to reach this achievement.
33:04Shannon Sharpe:Because this is a, I mean, these kids are 18, 19, 20 years of age, and they've been dreaming of this moment their entire lives. It's right here in front of you. And obviously you realize I did not get here by myself.
33:16Chad Johnson:Yeah.
33:16Shannon Sharpe:This is an opportunity to thank my mom, to thank my sister or my grandma or my mom, excuse me, my father. It's nice, you know what? It's really nice to see some fathers get some center stage. Because you know his mom, happy Mother's Day. Happy birthday, mom. Happy, you know, and the dad's like, oh, what day? You throw us a tie. We going about our business. Yeah, watching the draft, I was obviously watching the World Cup and watching the draft at the same time. There are a lot of two-parent household kids that got drafted this season. I saw that. You saw that, Ochoa? I like that. A lot of two-parent household kids getting drafted.
33:48Yeah, there's no Chicago.
33:49Shannon Sharpe:They make it seem like we ain't never got no two parents in the house. Right, right. A bunch of two parents. Right. On another note, too, real quick, Uncle Joe. DeBonza, as great as he is, as great as he was in college and understanding how good he's going to be probably in Washington, depending on how he fits in. Like coming out the East, can he really make a difference, you know, in that East and get the withers to maybe say to play in or maybe get him to a seed and having to deal with, obviously you got the Knicks, you know? You got the Heat, you know, who now have Giannis and probably going to have Klay Thompson.
34:24Wait, can I say that? Am I allowed to?
34:25Chad Johnson:Oh, man, come on, man. Come on. My bad, my bad, my bad, my bad. Listen, Ocho, I understand what you're saying. I think he is a guy. Look, there's been a handful of rookies who come into the league and right away take their team to the postseason. I think he can be in that group. You know what I mean? I think he got that type of talent. Not only does he have that type of talent, but it's the guys around him. He has proven guys around him.
34:51Shannon Sharpe:And I think that's the difference, Joe and Ocho, is that he's not going to be asked to do what a lot of other rookies has been asked to do. He has all NBA players. He has all-star players already on that roster. We know Trey is a 20-10 guy. We know AD is a 20-10 guy, can give you three blocks, can anchor your defense. He just needs to come in and be A.J. DeBonza. we're not asking you to give us 25 to 30 a night we just want hey give us a solid 16 to can you give us a solid 16 to 20 yeah efficient can you do can you do can you do that if he can do and also they got sar sar is going to need to step up and be a little bit better because everybody keep talking about brawny brawny brawny and he's gone under the radar and he's been and hadn't been a doing a whole lot since he arrived there he's going to need to be do a little bit more joe as the second pick in the entire draft.
35:39Shannon Sharpe:He's going to need to step up now.
35:40Chad Johnson:Yeah, yeah, I agree. I agree. And I think this year will be that year for Sar, Uncle Ocho. He can kind of play the background now. It's versus, you know, when he first got there, they had him playing lead, lead singer. He wasn't ready for that. You know what I mean? But now he'll have a plethora of guys who he can learn from, who he can play off of that will make his game a lot easier. Because I think what's underrated about AJ is that not only did he lead the Division I NCAA in scoring, but he did it at an efficient rate at like 52%, 53%. And when you got a guy, so he ain't no guy just coming out and hosting up shots.
36:18Chad Johnson:Like, he has great footwork. Yeah, yeah, yeah, he's not jacking up shots.
36:21Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, you're right, Joe.
36:21Chad Johnson:He know how to get to his spots. He plays the right way. He's an underrated passer. He can defend with that 6 '9 frame, them 7 '1 wingspan. I just think he going to fit right in. And I think the Wizards will make one of the biggest jumps in the Eastern Conference.
36:37Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, see, they was trying to make Sar Lee single. He need to be on the cymbals for the tambourine. Hey, yeah, hey, hey, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah. We're not going to let you do the drums. We're not going to let you do the horns. We're not doing anything. You should be wearing the back. So if you mess up a key, hey, don't nobody know it. Yeah. Yeah, man. Yeah, yeah. But he's got to improve. But I think with those three, that big three, with Abanza, Trey, and AD, this is contingent on AD being there. We don't know what their game plan is, but I would like to think they're probably tired of having a building that's half empty.
37:14Chad Johnson:Yeah. Man.
37:15Shannon Sharpe:At least with AD, you can win some games and get the fans to come back.
37:20Chad Johnson:Oh, Joe, them people come to see AJ Abanza, bro. Yeah, yeah. Hey, listen, if I'm in D.C., I have season tickets. because I be trying to get my hand on them tickets, bro. Hey, Joe, you think he polarizing like that to put Buster in the seat like that? Ocho, that boy nice, man. In his frame, listen, his frame is so prototypical for today's game. It's 6 '9", who can do everything. Shoot the three, get to the midi, dunk, get by you. Finish at the rim, above the rim. Got nice post work, great footwork. Like, his feel for the game is unteachable. You know what I mean? Some guys just really have a knack or feel for the game that makes the game and it comes easy to them.
38:02Chad Johnson:And I think he's one of these guys, bro. I think the game is in great hands with AJ. I think the Wizards, you know, took the right pick. And I'm looking forward to seeing the Wizards play this year, bro, because you got to understand now, Trey just signed for$212 million. You know what I mean? He done got his bag. Trey, congrats, bro. Trey done got his bag. So now he going to be coming out trying to prove, you know, that he is who he say he is. You feel what I'm saying? Yeah, I'm trying to get another one.
38:31Shannon Sharpe:How old Trey, 27, 28? Hell, I can get me another bag. I can be 32 and get another bag.
38:35Chad Johnson:Yeah, yeah. Hey, hey, hey, hey. You always want to go for a little dessert now. You hear me? Yeah, for sure. Yeah. Yeah. They still pay you? Yeah, you know, your rookie contract, that's your appetizer. Then, you know, you get that bag, that's your full-course meal. Now, you go for a little dessert after that, you want to. You know what I mean? Yeah. That rookie contract, Joe, I'm going to get everything that I really wanted.
39:01Shannon Sharpe:The nice sports car, the really expensive watch, get mom and dad a house, get me a Creole. Okay, that's that. Because once I start getting to that$212 ,000, that$200 ,000, that$300 ,000, I ain't touching that. That money will never be spent. I would have gotten it. Think about it. You're making$69 million. Let's just say for the sake of argument, your agent's going to get his 3 % to 5%. Uncle Sam's going to take 50 % of that so now you so that's 30 so basically you at 30 million let's just say for the sake of argument we're having a conversation here 27 million after Uncle Sam take his cut your agent take his cut you invest I'm going to take you know what I'm going to take 7 million now maybe you got a shoe deal I don't know who he signed with Adidas, Puma, Sketchers, and one Nike I don't know but that might be a situation you know what I ain't going to even touch my rookie money.
39:56Shannon Sharpe:Hello. I'm going to do this shoe contract money. Hello. I'm going to do this card signing money. That's how it goes. Hey, as a car deal, I might get mom and dad a car, but I'm going to get this car as I represent this dealership. Yep, yep. I'm going to drive dad on Joe and Joe. Yep, yep. I don't need no car. Yep, that's how it goes. But I'm going to make sure mom and dad taking care of. Oh, yeah. Look, bro, I'm going to kick you a little something, too. Hey, I think you got two sisters. What y 'all want? Hey, don't do too flashy. Can't do too flashy. Get y 'all a nice What's a nice Woman car, Joe?
40:31Hey, hold on, the new Kia's The new Kia's and maybe a Mercedes C-Series
40:37Chad Johnson:Yeah, them Mercedes hard, bro, I ain't gonna lie to you I like them Genesis Y 'all see them new Genesis they got Hey, that's for grown folk though, especially The Genesis sedan
40:49Shannon Sharpe:That's for grown folk You know Yeah, I like, but yeah, you know, hey, make sure they straight. Yeah. And then, hey, shut that thing down.
40:59Chad Johnson:Yeah. And never, and do not, I mean, do not lose sight of how you got here, bro. Yes. Do not, listen, do not fall in love with the things that, you know, that it brings. That it brings, yes. You got to stay in love with the grind, bro. Because a lot of times it'll bring things you don't need. Hello. I was going to do that. That's what, it's going to do that for sure. Yeah. Yeah. It's going to test you. It's going to test you.
41:23Shannon Sharpe:Sometimes you got to learn the hard way. Yeah. Give the devil a ride enough, eventually he'll drive. Hello. Come on, man. Hello. Come on, man. Eventually he going to drive. I don't care. I don't care who you are. If you give the devil a ride enough, eventually he will drive. Now, where the hell is my pen and paper? Yeah. So, AJ, congratulations, bro. Like I said, I saw your father, you and your father, when you came into ESPN. congratulations an unbelievable story an unbelievable journey but the journey now starts he thought he was on the journey to get here now the journey starts
41:59Chad Johnson:you can't exhale no
42:05Shannon Sharpe:now how do I improve getting here now how do I get better yeah getting here was the easy part it's staying here that must get hard
42:14Chad Johnson:that's it that's it about it, man. I love how his dad is helping him navigate this whole entire situation. I've seen something where they don't have an agent. You know what I mean? They kind of dealing with it.
42:30Shannon Sharpe:Oh, we already slotted in. Oh, you get 10 % more than what the last class got? Okay.
42:36Chad Johnson:So why am I going to get
42:37Shannon Sharpe:you 4 % to do that?
42:38Chad Johnson:Hello. And that's exactly what he said. So he said he's here to help his son. And I think from a child's standpoint, bro, that's what you want, man. You want your father to be there to help you navigate through this new situation, this new era that you're entering. And I think it's, I enjoy seeing it maybe because when I was a kid, I wish I would have had something like that. You feel me? Yes. You know, so I see how genuine it is. And man, he's in great hands. He just got to keep working, bro. You got to keep striving and want to be the best. And you can't exhale, although you made it. Like I'm saying, the hard part now starts because now to stick is just as hard as making it.
43:19Yeah. You got that number one pick on your target. You got to live up to that. You got to and continue to get better year in and year out. I'm excited to see him. I'm excited to see him.
43:35Shannon Sharpe:Getting married is easy. Staying married is the hard part. Hey, statistically, for some reason the numbers keep going up. Getting married and the number keep going up and getting the boards. Yeah. I don't understand. I don't care what the numbers say. I'm getting married. We all going to do that, Ocho. But I think the marriage might look a little different. Because I'm a space type of guy. Take your time. It might be a situation where you and I, we're in the same house but we don't sleep in the same bed every night. I don't think nothing wrong with that. Wait a minute, Joe. Wait a minute, Joe.
44:12Shannon Sharpe:I ain't never seen my grandfather and grandmother sleep in the same bed. Hey, that's back in the day now. It's 2026. I'm not sure the women today ain't going to let that fly now. Hold on. Who's that? Is that Shirley Ralph? Her and her husband just moved together. They lived in separate cities for 20-plus years. Well, you good, Joe. Hold on, Ash, pour that up. Look at me if that's Shirley Ralph.
44:31Chad Johnson:Hey, Joe. Ain't that work in your household? Listen, listen, Ocho. Abstinence makes the heart grow fonder, okay? Wait a minute. that ain't gonna work, Joe. That is not gonna work. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Sometimes, you hear what Ang talking about. Sometimes, man, it's better for us to get away from each other a little bit. So when we do come back and we, you know, we're excited again. Yes, sir, yes, sir, yes, sir. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. You know what?
44:56Shannon Sharpe:See, here the problem is. It's because society is saying, we sleep here. We do this and we do that. And everybody gets, you gotta do what works best for you. Right, right, right. For you and your situation, it might be best that you go get mad at the courthouse. Everybody talking about this destination wedding. Everybody talking about X, Y, and Z. Man, I need to have 10 bridesmaids. I need to have six groomsmen. Nah, I need to have my brother, my mom, my sister, my kids standing beside me. I need to have her people standing up, four or five people standing up. That's good. Why am I going to have a whole bunch of people that's like, man, I don't know why they got mad for it ain't going to last long talking ish at my place.
45:38Shannon Sharpe:I done spent$100 ,000 had a homeboy had a wedding everybody done got croc shoes made custom tucks married less than long when he skipped in the military how long they would marry long as a snowball in the microwave
45:57hey listen I like that idea the whole having space but you got to have a woman that really understands that because they'll take that the wrong way They would take that the wrong way. That's the whole point before we get mad.
46:09Shannon Sharpe:We understand this, Ocho. Ah, okay, okay, okay, okay. She might have her own place, too. Right, right. You know, I put a little seed away.
46:23Chad Johnson:Hey, Ocho probably one of them little clingy dudes. He like to be laid out. He is all up in Cambodia.
46:29Shannon Sharpe:Cambodia can't go nowhere. Oh, no, no. Excuse me, I'm on control. I'm the complete opposite. I'm not really clingy. I give you your freedom. I give you your space to let you do your thing. I'd like to think you'd be able to do the same for me. Outside of that, I just don't think as far as going as if we're married and actually having our own spaces in general, I don't know if that will fly because most women today, they want everything that's traditional. Everything that the format and the way they say it's supposed to be. Obviously, you're supposed to do what works for you. And ain't too many too fond of that now.
47:08Chad Johnson:Hey, hold on, hold on. Ocho, what they say, conversation rules the nation. Hey, man, you got to break it down for Ocho. You got to let her know what it is, man. Okay, okay, okay. Hey, Joe, I'm going to break it down, Joe. Yeah, let her know what's going on. Look, yeah. Hold on, Joe. The thought of marriage. Hold on. Hey, hold on, Unc. Now, when you break it down, right? And say, listen, we can be together. But at times, how do I explain? You know what? At times, you know what? I want my space. Yeah, yeah. Hey, that gets you cussed out. Nah.
47:38Shannon Sharpe:You and I going through, this is going to be a lifetime. Yes, sir. But there are going to be times that I'm going to need two or three days to myself. Ooh. Hey, nothing personal. What does that look like for you? Right. See, that's the problem. Everybody's been living a life for someone else. See, the thing is, is that people get into marriage and judge their marriage by somebody else's marriage. Hello. Hello. Remember, I told you, be careful judging your success with someone else's ruler. Yes, sir. Your marriage might not look like mine. Mine might not look like his. His might not look like theirs.
48:16Shannon Sharpe:That's why I'm saying, you know, I laugh and joke. We're like, ooh, ah. But somebody, but look, people swing and people like, hey, I want to see my husband have sex with somebody else. I want to see my wife. That works for them. That ain't me.
48:30Chad Johnson:I don't know. How in the hell?
48:32Shannon Sharpe:Hey, he's his own. I mean, but see, here's the thing. You don't know that Joe got that hammer. He put that hammer out on him. Oh, what have I done? What have I done got myself in? No, sir. Yes, sir. But see, if that works for you, and there are people that have situations like that, you know what? I'm going to put that in the book. I'm going to put that in my book. I got a book coming out, y 'all. Uh-oh. I can tell some stories. You write a book? Yeah, I got a book coming out. I'm going to be in it? Wait till the story that y 'all see come out in this book. Hey, okay, okay, okay. Put me in that thing, boy.
49:10Shannon Sharpe:Hey, I imagine, I imagine. But I think that's the thing, is that a marriage is different for you. There are certain cultures that you do in marriage. Okay, that's for that culture. Right. And that works for them. I can't be looking at, man, man, you know such and such. high school coach, the rival school, he was telling one of his runners would tell him, coach, you know, the guy, he said his coach let him drink a beer before he run. He said, but damn hell, son, you want me to buy you a beer? That worked for him. That ain't fit to go over here. What works for your relationship? If going on vacay, if some, you know, hey, we need to go out once a week.
49:53Shannon Sharpe:Somebody going to be cool with going out once every other week. somebody gonna be cold out going once a month somebody gonna say hey we can take a vacation once a year somebody gonna say we need to take a vacation every quarter what can you guys agree on and then make that work for y 'all and don't worry about society society got us all messed up to begin with that's the problem yeah hey trying to do everything
50:22I love the sounds the buzzing from the stadium the chanting from the fans, the announcers calling the place. Soccer. Futbol. It's home. Why do I watch the World Cup? That's like asking me, why do I breed? I inherited that fandom from my mom. I like watching it with my dad. It's a connecting force. From Futuro Studios, I'm Fernanda Echavarri, and this is American Futbol. A show about soccer culture in the U.S. and its underdog roots. We go beyond the game to the people and the stories that make it great. A soccer game is a festival. It's not just a game. It's your culture. I took an elbow to my head, which cracked my skull.
51:07It is an American game.

Like the co-founder of Rough Riders, Darren D. Dean. Talking about as a kid. Do you remember that we met even way before that? Let me think. Did you walk up to the gate? That was me, D. That was you? That was me. The day we found out that you and the whole crew was at Hit Factory, the mission was to get me to go to the gate, start freestyling, and see if I could get in the studio. I'm rapping, and then suddenly I hear a voice.
55:15Hey, open the gate. I had a book, Joe. I already know it. Step by step. Boy, shit, boring as hell.
55:37Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. So it's going to be interesting to see, and uh
55:48Shannon Sharpe:Draymond Green saying 7 '5 might actually hurt Victor Wimmyama let's take a listen to what Dre had to say a unicorn it's a rare rare air that he's in not only is it a unicorn but you also get to a certain height where it becomes a disservice in this league you know like there's nothing he can do about being 7 '5 but I'm not sure 7 '5 suits you better than being 7 '1". Right, right. Like being 7 '1". With his skill set. With his skill set. Being 7 '5", almost does him a disservice. Like, yeah, you can catch and finish. But with the skill set that everyone loves about this kid, being 7 '5", almost hurts that.
56:31Shannon Sharpe:Because, once you get to this level, you're going to run up against guys who's way stronger, that moves as fast or faster, and they play way lower to the ground. Right. And as you know, low man wins. Right. And so if you're just running up into that, like 7 '5 kind of hurts you. And so I think that's something that he's going to have to adjust to as well that people aren't really accounting for. I think it hurts him on an offensive end. I think it helps him on a defensive end. Absolutely. Because you see how he blocking those three-point shots. When he take one step and he throwing the ish in the stands, he's deflecting it.
57:13Shannon Sharpe:I understand what Draymond's saying because he's so tall. It's easy to root him out and get up under him. And that's why you saw sometimes you saw Caruso was guarding him. There's no way a 6 '5 guard, a 6 '4 guard should be able to guard him. But because he's so tall and Caruso just gets up under him It rooted him out of his spot.
57:36Chad Johnson:Yeah. That lower sense of gravity, bro. He's never going to have an advantage when it comes to that. He's always going to have to use his length, his quickness, versus the cast that's going to be guarding him, Ocho. He's always going to have an advantage. That's the problem because a big man guarding him, he's always going to have an advantage because of how he moves and his height and the way his game is. You know, he's not a typical big. He's not a stiff. He's not a guy who can just post up and shoot jump hooks or just shoot middies. Like, this dude going to block the shot, bring it all the way up the court, run the play.
58:13Chad Johnson:You know what? Now, y 'all just get out the way. Go in my bag. Bing, bing, bing. You know what I mean? And get right to it. We ain't seen that, bro, at 7 '5". So I agree with Unk. Defensively, it helps him. It's just on the offensive end, when he does try to be demonstrative when it comes to posting up and trying to gain that advantage and using his height to his advantage, that's where he's going to have to get stronger. Stronger don't mean like the mass he has to get. He has to be that wiry strong, Ocho. You know the word? You just can't let guys root you out and move. You know what I mean? I think that's the biggest adjustment that he's going to have to face or deal with that ultimately is going to take him to that next level to make that leap like Giannis made.
58:59Chad Johnson:You know, when Giannis first came into the league, Boy, he was skin and bone. I'm talking about, man, it's just night and day to what he ultimately got to. I don't think he going to be able to put on the mask on this guy. But as far as being effective and using his lift and moving around the court the way he does, he's always going to have an advantage at this point. He just has to be more consistent in his mid-range jump shots, his three-point jump shots, because you always got to respect him way out there. That's the advantage. So if he catches two feet behind a three, Ocho, and he pump fake you now, because you got to close out tough, now he can get into his bag.
59:37Chad Johnson:I just think, you know, strengthening up them hips, bro. Everything connected to the hips. Strengthening up them hips to where you can move, move. Waist down. Huh?
59:46Shannon Sharpe:Waist down.
59:47Chad Johnson:Yeah. You got to be. Yeah. When I look at, I'm about to say Giannis. When I look at. Wimby. Damn, what's his buddy's name?
59:55Shannon Sharpe:Wimby. Yeah, when I look at Wimby Young, obviously I think for him, I understand what Draymond is saying. I think he has an advantage obviously being 7-5. The only problem, the only problem he has is when he's in the low block or the post. That's it. That's it. Outside of that, he plays small outside from the three. When it's time to go into his two block, Joe, he play like somebody that's 6 '5", 6 '7". He can put the ball in the flow. He can shake you, he can get by you. The only issue, if you want to add something to his game, is to be able to play with your back to the basket, and maybe to go in your bag, and not let people get you off your spot.
1:00:35I think that's the reason why
1:00:36Shannon Sharpe:he don't want to, because he knows he's not strong enough to consistently bang. See, look, if he, like Shaq, Shaq was 7 '1". Shaq was 325. So Shaq was, but Shaq was ultra, ultra quick. For his size Shaq moved like a guy 6 '6", 6 '7". But he got 325 pounds. So when Shaq put that shoulder into you, or put that hip on you, you move it. It's a wrap. When he put that shoulder on you, everybody's like, well, damn.
1:01:10Chad Johnson:He ain't gaining no ground.
1:01:12Shannon Sharpe:Who cut a fan on in here? Ain't nobody moving. Ain't nobody getting dislodged. Look how OG dislodged him. Yeah. Remember OG going to the basket, dislodge him, boom. You think somebody can dislodge? You might dunk on a big, but you're not supposed to dislodge him like that.
1:01:32Chad Johnson:Hey, and I think Wimby hears all this too, fellas. I think he going to come back. You know, I think that in hindsight, the best thing that could happen to Wimby is them losing in this finals, bro. I think that young man going to lock in. Y 'all got to remember now, he ain't but 22 years old. So all that we're talking about, he's going to gain the strength to where he can hold his ground. It may take him to the next year or the year after that, but he's going to get better next year and the next year and the next year. So I think his game will continue to ascend to where he's going to be, obviously, the face of the league.
1:02:06Chad Johnson:Because the numbers that he's going to have across the board, bro, it's going to be something that we've never seen before. when it comes to scoring, blocks, rebounds. He probably going to be top five in every statistical category. You're right.
1:02:22Shannon Sharpe:And I think the thing is, look, everybody can't be like magic. Come in off the rip, boom, win the championship. Bird, come in. Sometimes you got to grind your way through like Jordan.
1:02:34Chad Johnson:Yeah.
1:02:35Shannon Sharpe:Lose, lose. He's like, man, the bad boy Pistons beating the hell out of me. Damn this. Hey, Tim, let's get in this gym.
1:02:43Chad Johnson:Yeah. No time off. It builds character, bro.
1:02:46Shannon Sharpe:Bro, I'm tired of these hard-ass fouls because they're wearing me down. I got to be able to withstand that, still get to my spot, and let this velvet jumper go.
1:02:56Chad Johnson:Hello.
1:02:57Shannon Sharpe:And that's what he did. Hello. So all that Joe Dumars pulling him down and Lambeer and Sal and Rodman beating the hell out of James Edwards, Rick Mahorn. You're like, man, enough of this.
1:03:09Chad Johnson:Man, yeah.
1:03:10Shannon Sharpe:He started to be able to play through that. and now he don't have a weakness. You can't beat him up because they felt they could beat him up. Say we beat him up, hey, he'll shut it down. Now you can't beat him up. Now what you going to do? Yeah. But you know what? He's still small frame. Even if he does get stronger, I think he has to pick and choose when he wants to play that game. Yeah. When he wants to play that game with his back to the basket. When he wants to play that game down in the low block. You pick and choose when you want to do that. You don't want to take away from your other strengths and being able to put the ball on the floor, being able to shoot the three, or being able to get to your spot and shoot your daddy.
1:03:51Chad Johnson:Yeah, no, no, I agree with you, Ocho, and I think that's why I say he has to take what's a weakness of him right now and make it into a strength. And that's just, you know, obviously staying in the weight room, getting stronger, and continue to work on your game. Your game's going to evolve once he gets more comfortable and gain more strength. You know, man, you've been in that weight room, bro. It brings a sense of confidence when you hit that floor, man. Absolutely. I don't know about y 'all, but bro, I used to do a full workout before games. You know, just to go out there and really feel strong.
1:04:18Chad Johnson:Like, hey, man, it way different when you've been in that weight room. And I think this loss hurts Wimby in the finals to where, you know, he really was hurt behind this. So I think he going to come back a totally different player. But the problem is with Wimby, he didn't have a signature shot that he could go to. Yeah.
1:04:37Shannon Sharpe:Look at all the greats. They had a signature shot they could go to. Elijah Juan Jordan, Bird Magic, Kobe Braun, Elijah Juan I don't know if I've mentioned Elijah Juan twice Everybody had a shot So he doesn't have that shot I can put it to my basket, I can put my back to the basket Give it to me He didn't feel comfortable with that
1:05:02Chad Johnson:He didn't feel Dirk, all those guys
1:05:05Shannon Sharpe:Now if you were Shaq, you said 1-325-340 Where you would just turn around and everybody move and bang but that ain't what he is. He's going to have to Brunson. When Brunson need to get a shot, Brunson going to go to that, he going to do it, put that shoulder to you and hit you with the step back. Every single time, go back and look at the shots that he hit on Champagne. Go back and look at the shots that he made down in clutch situation. You got to have that in your bag.
1:05:33Chad Johnson:Oh yeah, and as a post player, you got to have you at least at least three moves, go-to move that you know going to work. And you're right, he don't have that right now. And I think he definitely has to put the work in. At his size, bro, Ocho, I agree with you. He needs to use his matchups for him, who's ever guarding. You got a big guy here who's slow-footed like Gobert, then take him out here in the deep waters and drown him. You know what I mean? Take him out here in the deep waters and drown him. But when you're playing against the Knicks and they got Cat and he guarding you, you're going to have to get you a couple moves, jump hook, You know what I mean?
1:06:13Chad Johnson:Three nice go-to moves, bro, that you can give him something different every time to keep his ass guessing. And I think once he figures that part out, Arca Ocho, that's going to take him to a whole other level. Listen, I'm not in the NBA. I'm not Wimby. But understanding the strengths that I have right now, how good I am offensively, how good I am defensively. There are two people that I would want to go see in the offseason. For one, to work on the toolbox. Two, I'm going to see Kevin Garnett. Just for the mentality. just to have that dog in me, and I'm going to see Akeem Olajuwon to add some of the repertoire that he had to his game and see if I can add it to that.
1:06:51Chad Johnson:That footwork, boy. You got to get that footwork. That's what your dream got, bro. Look, we look at the turnaround shots and all that, but it's his footwork. You know, when we learn that, he get that footwork down, Pat, it's a wrap, bro.
1:07:04Shannon Sharpe:Well, I don't know if he's going to get that footwork because you got to realize Akeem grew up playing soccer. Yeah. So you know he great with his people. Yeah, Wimby, where'd Wimby from? Huh? Wimby grew up playing soccer to wait for him. Man, how you going to kick the ball with a size 42 shoot? He playing size, he playing. He playing with a size 30. He way by the size 30. Way by the size 30. Man, they're bad feet that long, Joe. How the hell are you going to kick the damn ball? Man, he ain't playing no soccer. If he playing soccer, he was playing gold. Yeah, he might kick the ball when it's in front of him, but as far as dribbling the ball down the field, hell no.
1:07:42Shannon Sharpe:But you look at But it wasn't just a turnaround Dreamer show you the ball Show you another move Show you another move And then up under you
1:07:50Chad Johnson:Yeah Yeah
1:07:52Shannon Sharpe:You can slick with it You got to have a counter to the counter
1:07:55Chad Johnson:There you go That's it I'll agree
1:07:58Shannon Sharpe:But like you said Look he's The thing is Is that he's got to work on that now Because we said the same thing With Dwight Howard He only 19 He only 19 He going to work on it and Dwight Howard never developed a signature move. These two completely different type of animals, though. Huh? These two completely type of animals, though. All I'm saying is if Dwight Howard would have worked on a move, Joe, because look at Dwight. Dwight had that same little skinny-ass frame when he came in. And two, three years later, man, Dwight Howard looked like a show enough.
1:08:30Chad Johnson:Oh, yeah. Hey, Dwight was real raw. When he first came into the league, He ain't have no offensive game for real. You know what I mean? He's running dog. Yeah, but he developed him a nice little jump hook. You know, he'll shoot his turnaround sometime and then face up. Where he turn face up and shoot that little jump off the glass. He developed that. You know what I mean? Wimby, he's going to develop. I'm telling y 'all, he's going to develop at least two to three go-to moves that he used on that block. Whether it's the turning face, whether it's the back down to the jump hook, whether it's fade away.
1:09:05Chad Johnson:but you have to be effective and efficient when you shoot these shots, bro. Because in the postseason, what we see, hey, man, ain't a whole lot of space out there. You know what I mean? You ain't got a lot of time. Great scores. It don't take all day pounding the rock. You're going to get two dribbles max, you know, to be able to get your stuff off. And you got to be able to do it at an efficiency rate. And I think he will learn that.
