In short

Best of NFL News Part 1—contract updates and quarterback talk, plus debate over CJ Stroud’s body language and the Vikings’ QB depth chart.

Guests (on the show)

  1. Andre Johnson (former Houston Texans WR; NFL Hall of Fame caliber career). He critiques CJ Stroud’s body language.
  2. Daylan Henley (Los Angeles Chargers linebacker; recently recorded 8 tackles, half a sack, and a quarterback hit in a loss to the Cardinals; discusses expectations and preseason reps).

Key claims

  • Baker Mayfield agreed to a 3-year, $165M extension with Tampa Bay, with $110M guaranteed; hosts argue Tampa “had no backup plan,” so they had to pay him.
  • Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell named Carson Wentz backup and J.J. McCarthy third QB; hosts claim McCarthy is being treated as a “project” and that the team lacks confidence in him.
  • Andre Johnson calls out CJ Stroud’s body language as “bad,” saying it can “trickle through the team.”
  • Hosts counter that body language affects perception, but quarterbacks still must perform; they emphasize “even keel” and moving on quickly after mistakes.

Notable examples

  • Comparisons to veteran QBs’ emotional styles (e.g., Jay Cutler, Aaron Rodgers).
  • Jets quarterback history used to argue why Sam Darnold’s situation didn’t predict success.

2:46Shannon Sharpe:Engineers and Baker Mayfield have agreed to a three-year extension for$165 million. The extension includes$110 million now in guarantees on top of the$40 million guarantee that Mayfield is scheduled to make in 2026. The Bucs originally offered Baker Mayfield two years at$50 million, but Mayfield and his agent Tom Mills felt that the deal was too light. The new deal averages$55 million per season, tied to third highest in the league. You see, Joe? Yeah. He got a$33 million deal. because he signed a one-year deal for about$5 million. Plays really well. Boom. Now they say, you know what? They gave three years$100 million, about$33 ,000,$300 ,000 per year.

3:29Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. That's all Minnesota had to do. Football is finally back and PrizePix is bringing the best offer yet. That's all Minnesota had to do right there. And guess what? Prove it. If it don't work out, you walk, hey, 33 ain't nothing.

5:22Shannon Sharpe:But you can't let it walk out the door for nothing, though, Joe. See, that's what really hurts you, is that you let it walk out the door and you ain't get nothing in return for it. Yeah.

5:30Joe Johnson:Yeah, absolutely. I like what Baker did. Obviously, Joe and Joe, it was a proven season. he proved that season with a bit I don't want to say low ball I'm just saying based on the starting quarterback it wasn't a respectful number then they come back they take care of him okay we believe you let's see with this three year no hunt it okay I showed you what I could do I'm the heart soul of the team I give us a chance to win every time we go out there and compete okay now what y 'all want to do take care of your boy because you ain't got no answer behind him ain't no answer behind him so they had no they had no choice in a sense he has the leverage he has the power and he understood that and hey look and i think and that's like before you go joe um him saying something too that's the first time i heard a quarterback have to come out and be vocal about it

6:22Shannon Sharpe:you don't happen that's the first time because they normally they they they were like

6:31Shannon Sharpe:then they realized they ain't got no choice right when you when you realize without a quarterback you ain't got no chance of winning Tampa you already been through that yeah you remember you had an outstanding defense yeah and then it took Tom Brady to come and not turn the ball over and play well to win your championship and then the three years you had Brady there you had an expectation of getting to the playoffs and making a deep run. That's what quarterbacks give you. And see, when you let somebody walk out the building, Joe, and you don't get anything for them, it's like being like my old man used to say, boy, it's like being mad without a prenup.

7:08Shannon Sharpe:They take half the money and all the hoo-ha. Boy, that's a lose-lose, ain't it, Joe?

7:13Chad Johnson:Yeah, yeah, it's a lose-lose.

7:15Shannon Sharpe:I mean, they taking half the money and all the hoo-ha with them.

7:18Chad Johnson:I think for the Vikings' sake, you know, they were banking on J.J. McCarthy, but the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, they couldn't let Baker get out of there, fellas. True. Well, they had no backup plan. You know what I mean? They had to pay him. So I don't know what took so long.

7:40Shannon Sharpe:Well, they don't want to be tired too long. And they didn't want to get to a four-year, five-year deal. You know what I'm saying, Joe? Yeah. Like three years. They wanted to go two. You see, the first off was two for 50. And so did it. This year plus two more. That's kind of where they wanted to go. But Baker did something smart. Baker says, hold on. I've got to keep it at least second because Caleb Williams is coming behind me. CJ Stroud is coming behind me. Bryce Young is coming behind me. There are a lot of guys that are coming behind me. I'm not taking a step back.

8:17Chad Johnson:Yeah.

8:18Shannon Sharpe:I'm going to keep pushing this ball forward because I promise you, Caleb Williams ain't taking 55 million I can promise you CJ Stroud ain't getting 55 million they looking for 60 you heard the report so I don't know if they're true that CJ wants 70 damn

8:36Joe Johnson:he's not going to get 70 he'll be somewhere between 60 or 62 but hold on he has to play well he has to play well this year I agree but I think out of three quarterbacks that you named Jaden Daniels is also in that picture. Drake Mays. It depends on who goes. Oh, yeah, Drake Mays in that picture. It depends on who goes first. But the one with the most upside to me that will probably reset the market and be the highest paid will probably be Caleb Williams.

9:06Shannon Sharpe:And they're going to be reluctant. They're going to be real reluctant for somebody to go past the homeboy now. Because you're talking about a guy that's won three Super Bowls, been to five, two-time league MVP, a 5 ,000-yard passing season, a 50-touchdown passing season. He's universally regarded is the best quarterback in football. Although Josh Allen contends, and, you know, when you list him, it's normally my homeboy Josh Allen and your quarterback, Joe. Ocho. Dak. Joe. Joe Burrell. Joe, Joe. Yeah, those normally the top three, you mix them up, then Lamar comes in there and you get, some people say Dak.

9:42Shannon Sharpe:Matthew Stafford don't got to take a backseat to nobody. No. I don't know if you noticed it. Matthew Stafford ain't got to take a backseat to nobody.

9:50Chad Johnson:No.

9:50Shannon Sharpe:Because he can make every throw. Now, he ain't got the legs those other guys got. But his arm talent is second to none. Hello.

9:59Chad Johnson:That boy got a rocking boy.

10:01Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, hey, he might be top five, and I ain't sure he two, three, four, or five when it comes to just arm talent. I'm just saying. Y 'all watched him. Yeah, yeah. Nah, hey, the boy got some weapons over there now. But I'm glad that Baker was able to get his money, given what he had to go through in Cleveland. They didn't believe in him. They didn't like his style of leadership. Everybody can't lead like Peyton and Tom. And it seems like that's the standard, don't you? You got to be buttoned up like those guys. You got to be, you know, I get it. I know sometimes you can't, you know, the one thing that I think is universal, when things go bad, you take it on you, put it on you.

10:46Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. Yes. You always stand at the forefront because when things go good, you getting all the damn credit. Hello. So when it's bad, that's on me. Put that on me. I need to play better. Certain things, how do you handle certain things I think you have to do? But leadership, people lead, you know, different ways. What you think? What you thinking, guys?

11:08Chad Johnson:Yeah, I'm with you. I think the accountability part that you're talking about, Like, I love when a guy steps to the podium, Ocho, and he say, hey, look, I got to be better. I mean, my play tonight wasn't up to par. You know what I mean? Versus pointing the finger. You know what I mean? Like, just take the accountability, bro, and keep moving. Because I think from a fan's perspective, we'd appreciate that a lot more. You know what I mean? Versus pointing the finger, trying to call other guys out.

11:35Joe Johnson:Yeah. I mean, I think most quarterbacks do do it that way. I think maybe the only one I can think of, you know, who has been known to chastise, you know, those who make mistakes is Aaron Rodgers. Yeah. Aaron Rodgers will say, you know, what's going on? Aaron Rodgers, he's going to drive a bus now.

11:56Shannon Sharpe:He's going to slap over you. Yeah.

11:59Joe Johnson:But I think every other quarterback, they're very PC, you know, and answer the questions the right way. And when things go well, they send the praise elsewhere. And when things don't go well, they take accountability.

12:12Shannon Sharpe:Chad said, man, you used to kill Baker undisputed. I did. Now I kill him again if he play bad. That ain't no secret. I don't hold no punches. That's who I am. Hey, y 'all, you already know when you hear me talk, if somebody play good, I'm going to say they play good. If somebody play bad, I'm going to say they play bad. It don't matter who they are. It don't matter what color they are. It don't matter how many years they've been in the league. And when I say things, I don't try to take – I can't, even if I could, I can't. I can't take away with something somebody's already won. If you won a Super Bowl, if you're an MVP, if you're an offensive player of the year, a rookie of the year, I can't take those awards away.

12:52Shannon Sharpe:But the thing is about sports is that I love the most about it. You got to update that resume on a weekly basis. Every year. This ain't no way every three months. They say in the real world you're supposed to update your resume every three months. No, no, no, no, no, no. You don't get that luxury in pro sports. You update that thing on a weekly basis in football. And in basketball, you update it two to three nights a week. Hello. Hello. So ain't nothing change, Chad. Ain't nothing change. Y 'all know. Y 'all know who I am. Y 'all know my resume. Y 'all know what I do. If somebody play bad, I'm going to say they play bad.

13:24Chad Johnson:And that's why as a professional, Chad, as a professional, you have to have short-term memory. You have to have short-term memory. to be able to last in the NFL or the NBA or any other professional sport because there's going to be some good days. There's going to be some not-so-good days. But those not-so-good days, how you get through them, it's going to determine the success that you have in whatever sport that you're playing, bro. You know what I mean?

13:47Shannon Sharpe:Well, Skip, and I used to argue all the time. I said I thought Sam Darnold was better than Baker. I said, but he went to the Jets. I said, well, name the quarterback that got drafted to the Jets that had success. Hell, it ain't been one. I mean, you got to go back 60 years with Joe Namath. 60. Joe Namath. Damn. Ain't nobody. None of these people was even born when the Jets had a good quarterback. I mean, Chad Pennington was okay. But come on now. Mark Sanchez had a nice little run. But that was defense. It wasn't him. That defense was top two. That wasn't him. Whatever you're chasing, flex your next with new On Plus 12-milligram nicotine pouches.

17:40Shannon Sharpe:To no one's surprise, Vikings head coach Kevin O 'Connell has announced Carson Wentz will serve as the team's backup quarterback on Sunday, with J.J. McCarthy will serve as the third quarterback. Here's O 'Connell on the decision. Yeah, Glenn, J.I., so we're going to, you know, Carson will be the backup on Sunday, and, you know, J.J. will obviously be the third guy. And really, I'm looking at that right now, Kevin, as a week-to-week thing. And I think, you know, Carson, he's got almost 100 career starts. What he was able to do last year from a standpoint of very limited repetition, but being able to apply a career's worth of experience, that's kind of what you need to do as a backup quarterback, especially early on when so much of the emphasis is going to be on getting Kyler as comfortable as we can possibly get him.

18:31But J.J. is, you know, he's still going to get a bunch of great work, you know, as Carson will, you know, giving our defense a look. And then there's time before, there's time after the development of a player that, you know, we're really, you know, I'm just really excited to continue to get a chance to work with him and then want to make it week to week. So, you know, when we feel like we need to, you know, declare something different, we can and we will.

18:58Joe Johnson:I mean, that should be no surprise to anybody. That should be no surprise to anybody, you know, how the pecking order went. You knew J.J. McCarthy was going to be the third quarterback, you know. I mean, some people thought, you know, they would let him go or maybe trade him, see if he can find some value, you know, base as high as he went as a pick. But he's a project at this point, huh? Yes. He's a project. But right now, we don't have time to deal with the project. Owners, teams, and coaches, we want to win right now because players like that with the inconsistency J.J. McCarthy played with last year, that gets you sitting home and gets you fired.

19:32Joe Johnson:You got to uproot your family and your kids. You know, I'm just being honest, Joe. Boy, at least you feel short, man, in today's game. you need a quarterback everything starts with a quarterback if you don't have that foundational piece you're not going nowhere and coach understands that which which is why Kyler Murray you know is the star of the quarterback and Carson Wentz based on what he's been able to do in the past he's number two but again on one thing that that we said we saw we saw two injuries tonight from key players when you're an injury away from being in the game oh we hey we need Kyler Murray to be healthy this year.

20:08Joe Johnson:He's had injuries in the past. He got injured his last year in Arizona when Jacoby Brissett had to start.

20:16Shannon Sharpe:And we're playing well. But guess what? All three of the quarterbacks have an injury history. Kyler Murray, Carson Wentz, and J.J. McCarthy. So, ain't none of them made of, is what we would call durable. So you know what it say to me.

20:33Chad Johnson:Hey, they don't have no faith in J.J. McCarthy. None. Absolutely none. Nah, we ain't, hey, hey, they don't plan on giving him no chance. We going with experienced backup. It just says that they have no faith in him, bro. Like, they gave him an opportunity. He didn't seize the moment. Now he the third quarterback. Where they cooking themselves in the ass. For giving up Sam Donald, for letting him walk. Yes! But, hey, hold up, though. Hold up, hold up. It's hard to really blame him on Ocho because you don't really know. You know what I mean? Yeah, yeah. If you keep Sam Donald, you don't know what J.J.

21:06Chad Johnson:McCarthy's going to be. I ain't trying to find out either. Huh? I ain't trying to find out either.

21:11Joe Johnson:I definitely ain't trying to find out. Not after that run they had. He was 14-3.

21:15Shannon Sharpe:And Ocho and I said, look, if he wants 50, 55 million, I'm going to be reluctant. But what he got was 30. He got a Baker Mayfield deal. 33, like three years for 103 million. Joe, 104 million dollars. That's nothing. Hold on. He got that before he won? No, that's what Seattle paid him to come there. Oh, yeah, yeah. Yeah, okay. I'm saying that if he was wanting$50,$55 million, I'm going to have to like, damn, whoo, whoo, that kind of commitment. But a$30 to$35 million, I can sleep with myself. I can live with myself making that decision. Right. Now look at you. You're searching. You're searching for a quarterback.

21:59Shannon Sharpe:You got all those weapons. Look at what you got at the receiver. Look at you got Hawkinson at tight end. You got Addison. You got Jetta. You got Jones in the backfield. You got an outstanding defense. The one missing piece is the most important piece. All those other pieces don't matter if you don't got that guy. I don't give a damn how good your defense is. I don't care if you got Chase, you got Jetta, you got Trey McBride. I don't give a damn who you got.

22:25Joe Johnson:I know one thing. What's that? I'm not a scout. I'm not a scout, Joe. But if I'm watching film and I think a quarterback is going to be picked that high, at least let what he did in college have some type of reflection in what we do here in Minnesota. It's not even the same. They don't even throw the ball. No disrespect to the Michigan Wolverines. They win the ball. And then they play action after the run. We are in a past happy league. You got Jettis, you got Addison, you got Hawkinson. Like I just said, we're going to throw the ball. So you rolling the dice anyway. and I just got a guy and I'm going to let him go and we just went 14-3 even though we got to the playoffs and lost but I know what I get with him as opposed to I don't know what I'm getting with this one

23:15Shannon Sharpe:and he was familiar with your offense because remember he came from San Francisco it runs the same type of offense

23:24Chad Johnson:I don't know man I don't know how y 'all blame the Vikings when Sam Donald was like a journeyman okay Ocho y 'all act like everywhere he been he just been

23:31Joe Johnson:whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa he's a journeyman let's wait a minute now wait a minute he started out with the jets that's a journey in itself you got a point johnny def hey that's like being johnny def in the pirates of the caribbean ain't no telling what you gonna get over there the jets haven't done right by a quarterback since goddamn joe namath you know so that star from the top it triggered this way down so really no quarterback has really had success over there. And the time the Jets have had success is because the goddamn defense was all world. You're right. Then he goes to Carolina.

24:09Chad Johnson:I mean, come on. I'm just saying, man, you act like he out here, you know what I mean? Like, he ain't been putting anything.

24:18Shannon Sharpe:But here's the thing, though, Joe, for$30 -$35 million, which is not a lot of money for a quarterback. Now, like I said, it would have caused me some concern if I got to give up 50, 55 million. But he got a similar deal to what Baker Mayfield got in Tampa. Now, he's probably going to get, if he comes back and plays as well as he did last year, even if they don't get to the Super Bowl, they're probably going to tear that contract up and give him another similar deal, 50, 55 million. That's all I'm saying. I think he had played well enough to take another look. Yeah.

24:52Joe Johnson:He definitely deserved that.

24:53Shannon Sharpe:That's all I'm saying. I believe he had played well enough. 14. Man, do you know how hard it is to win 14 games in the NFL? He won 14 games. Yeah, I understand. He was at the Jets. Tom Brady might have been failed. Tom Brady and Peyton Manning might have failed at the Jets. Them yoke so bad. The only way I believe is not the Jets is that Tom Brady or Peyton Manning had gone there and they had success. Other than that, nope. nope I mean what quarterback what quarterback in free agency says you know what my number one destination is the Jets hell no

25:35Chad Johnson:unless he knows he's getting a band

25:37Shannon Sharpe:I don't think anybody is surprised by this like I said I thought they would try and trade him because I knew he was going to I knew at best case scenario he's going to be three if you go back and look at it Bozmer played better than he did in the preseason. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. If we're being all the way honest, he got outplayed. Everybody played better than he did.

26:10Shannon Sharpe:But now, and Coach's like, well, I'm looking forward to working with, well, if you want to work with him so much, you put him at two.

26:21Chad Johnson:Man, what the hell you doing? What new got going on, man? Come on, bro. Man, tell your camera down. They don't want to see your ass. Come on, man. Come on, man.

26:33Joe Johnson:Hey, no, no. I'm using the bench. You know the bench that they got in front of the bed? I ain't got no back, so now my back hurts, so I'm just going to grab a chair. Hey, y 'all put me in the suite, huh?

26:45Shannon Sharpe:Yeah.

26:46Joe Johnson:Hey, I appreciate that, boy. Hey, you notice I'm not smoking in here because y 'all paid for the room, huh? Smoke it up. You're welcome.

26:54Chad Johnson:Oh, I can smoke? Hey, smoke it up. Hey, hey, hey. You better not smoke, boy. That's a$1 ,000 fee. No, it ain't. It's only$250, Joe. Where you at? You know what? Don't worry about it.

27:06Joe Johnson:Hey, who you gonna pull this? Yeah, I'm up there.

27:15Shannon Sharpe:But no, no. I just think the thing is that Kevin O 'Connell realized he's on the hot seat, too. with Joe. Yeah.

27:22Chad Johnson:Yeah, he on the hopsey. Hell yeah. That's why he ain't taking no chances with J.J. He's like, look, I'm going out with these veteran guys. Kind of going to get first debbs. I think he's going to be alright though, Uncle Nocho. I know he's a little smaller, but I think understanding the circumstances, the situation that he's put in, hell, after this one, it may not be another one.

27:43Shannon Sharpe:Well, I think the thing is that, Joe, it's just hard to stay healthy at that size. Especially because what makes him dynamic is his running ability. And when you run, you put yourself in harm's way. People say, well, Drew Brees wasn't big. Drew Brees didn't put himself in damn harm's way. Drew Brees wasn't out there running around like Speedy Gonzalez. Drew Brees was getting the damn ball out of his hands. Yeah, yeah. A smaller quarterback, that's a blessing and a curse. Because if you go back and study, if you look at history, guys that have gotten sacked the most, Joe, have been your most athletic quarterbacks.

28:18Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. You look at Randall Cunningham. You look at Michael Vick. Look at all the guys. You're like, how you get sacked that much as athletic as you are? Because you run yourself out of danger on the front side, but run yourself into something on the back side.

28:33Chad Johnson:Right.

28:33Shannon Sharpe:Back side. And then you become so reliant on that. Like, I can get away from this. Them guys faster than you think. This ain't college. Them defenses there chase your ass down.

28:45Chad Johnson:Them boys move. I'm talking about, man, them some big boys out there moving too. Yes. Them boys ain't, we talking about some 215, 220. Them boys big, man. I'm talking about 265. Yeah, they 265, 275.

28:57Shannon Sharpe:Look at Myles Garrett. What? That's 6 '4 and a half, 270 moving like that. Look at Will Anderson Jr. Look at those guys. Man, them guys moving.

29:07Chad Johnson:Man, can you imagine? And they're coming with bad intentions, too. You hear me? I'm talking about, can you imagine how you feel after the game? I'm thinking if you're a running back because you're getting hit so damn much. Man, come on, man. That's what I tell him.

29:19Shannon Sharpe:I had the Derrick Henry. Look at all those. Look at all those. And his upright running style, that's why he went in the second round because people are like, there is no way he can have that upright running style and last beyond five years, especially all the carries that he had in high school, all the carries that he had in just three years of college. Ain't no way he can survive more than three to four years. And here he is, you know, 10, 11 years into the league and he's got 13 ,000 yards with an outside chance of being at worst case, maybe three, four, maybe two or three. He might even catch him.

29:52Shannon Sharpe:He's like 5 '5", about 5 ,500 yards short of Emmitt.

29:57Chad Johnson:Hey, you know what amazes me is that when Derek Heron, when he gets to that second level, Uncle Ocho, it seems like it's hard to catch him, boy.

30:04Joe Johnson:Oh, yeah, he can run that. Oh, yeah, he can run that, Joe. He can run that. Hey, too, when I think about other running backs that had that upright running style, I think about Roger Craig. Even though he lift his leg high, he was still upright. Remember Roberts in Minnesota? He ran tall, too.

30:26Shannon Sharpe:He did. He didn't run his style was so smooth. But see, the thing is with Raj, Raj didn't get the carries. He didn't get the workload because Raj was mainly a runner and a receiver. So they split between running and – but, you know, Derrick Henry getting the ball 300 carries. 350, 400. Man, come on, man. Mm-hmm. Damn.

30:47Joe Johnson:Hey, Joe, don't nobody want to hit Derrick Henry, man. Once he gets to that second level and he got to hit it. No, sir. Go on, Joe. Them boys don't want none of that smoke. You know what's funny? TV don't do you no justice. TV don't do you no justice. You see that dude, man, up close in person, and he running full speed, and he get past that first level, and oh, man. Oh, he gone. I'm attacking his pinky toe.

31:20Shannon Sharpe:Former Houston, Texas great Andre Johnson spoke about the one thing he likes about dislike, excuse me, dislike about CJ Stroud. Let's take a listen to what Dre had to say. With him, and this is just me personally, what I dislike about CJ, I dislike his body language. Like his body language is bad. like anytime something happens it's like you know what I'm saying this is coming from Dre but I'm not picking on him he has bad body language I don't know like I think as a me being a former player your quarterback having that type of body language is bad because it because other guys look at you as the quarterbacks when they see you and they see you feeling a certain way or your body language a certain way, it kind of trickles through the team.

32:17Shannon Sharpe:Guys, what do you think? This is how CJ responded. I respect Dre as a person. I appreciate his critiques, but I'm focused on this week. Joe, I'm kicking to you first. You agree with Andre's call out of CJ?

32:31Chad Johnson:Yeah, I agree. Okay, Ocho, I'm going to tell you why. because body language, no matter what sports you're playing, bro, it's a telltale. It's clearly letting everybody know how you feel, your opponent, the fans. I've always been the type to try and be even keel. I don't want you to know if I'm too high feeling too good or if I don't really got it going and I'm like, damn, tonight ain't tonight. You know what I mean? I try and stay even keel. But I understand what Andre Johnson is saying. Your quarterback, he determines so much of the game, and if he exudes bad energy and all that, come on, man.

33:09Chad Johnson:Y 'all know that's infectious, bro. It's infectious throughout the team, throughout the offense. So I'm with Dre on this one, bro. Ocho?

33:18Joe Johnson:I mean, I kind of like it in a sense a little bit. I don't like the infectious part because regardless of how my quarterback is feeling, regardless of his body language, I still, me personally, I still got a job to do because that, that die in the sky, it don't, it don't lie, Joe die in the sky. It don't lie. Now, what I don't like is this is the same conversation we had about the way players should answer questions. Comparison the way Cam Ward answers and the Fernando Mendoza, like everybody operates in different manners. Everyone reacts in different manners when something goes well, or when something goes bad.

33:53Joe Johnson:I do agree with Dre in a sense that obviously he just shows some type of emotion. Another quarterback that showed no emotion. He was always one way, whether it was a good play or a bad play. Hey, remember Jay Cutler? Yeah. Did Jay Cutler show any emotion? No. His face was always the same way. His body language was always the same way. I think Jay and CJ Stroud might be the only two I can think of that don't show any emotion, whether it's a good play or a bad play. Maybe it's something he can work on. But what he does and what he shows right now is how he's always been. How he's always been. And he's always been like this.

34:28You know, it's not like he just started not showing emotion once he got to the NFL.

34:32Joe Johnson:So I think for him to try to change that now, it would be somewhat performative. And it would probably be someone that he's not, you know, just appease those to make it look like he cares. But I agree with him in a sense. I don't like the part that it can affect everybody else. Because everybody else ain't worried about what my quarterback looks like. Hell, I got a goddamn job to do. But that's pretty much it. I agree.

34:55Shannon Sharpe:Hold on. Yeah, I don't have a problem. But I think, like, look, things are going to go wrong during the course of a ball game, and you can be disappointed. But what I can't do is let it linger. I can't let it fester. Right. Yeah. Because a lot of times, and that seems like what Dre is saying, and I don't want to speak for Dre because Dre, I think, you know, said it. You know, the greatest, the demographic of people that are the greatest body language communicator are black people. It's been studied. We can read body language better than any race of people. Absolutely. There's something to it what Dre is saying.

35:24Shannon Sharpe:he said I'm not saying that you shouldn't be disappointed when you make a mistake but I'm saying I think you let it fester I think you let it last too long and it bleeds into the next play. What's the way to say? On to the next play. Yeah. Yeah. You started early. Go ahead. I'm tripping. What?

35:43Joe Johnson:Eli Manning.

35:45Shannon Sharpe:Yes. Eli.

35:47Joe Johnson:Eli. You get nothing.

35:50Shannon Sharpe:Nothing. Let me think about receivers because you know all of them. But see, the problem is what you're saying now with Eli. Eli had no emotion. You see CJ get highs and lows. Yeah. You see? Right, right, right. He thought... I mean, he coming at that thing, hey. He throw a touchdown. I thought he was Ocho in the thing.

36:14Chad Johnson:Hey, hey.

36:15Shannon Sharpe:Now, all of a sudden, he throw a pick and he fumbled.

36:17Chad Johnson:Yeah. Yeah. There you go.

36:20Shannon Sharpe:Yeah.

36:21Chad Johnson:Yeah.

36:21Shannon Sharpe:It's the ebbs and the flows. It's the extremely highs and the low lows. I'm not saying you should not be disappointed, but you've got to be an even keel. You can't get too high when things go good. You can't get too low when things go bad. Yes, I'm not saying you shouldn't celebrate. I'm not saying you shouldn't be disappointed when things go bad. All I am saying is that if you let it fester, Ocho, we got what we call leaders on the team. Yes, sir. You were a leader. your leadership style is Ocho is fun going. Ocho is outgoing personality. He ain't going to let nothing even except that one time in the locker room that you got upset that you were letting the Steelers.

37:02Shannon Sharpe:That was the first time that they had ever seen you. It overflowed like it did. Oh, yeah. And it shocks the people like, man, this ain't the Ocho I know. Man, what happened to Ocho cracking jokes? They're having a good time funny. It was no laughing matter then. Nah. That's an isolated incident. Yeah. But you've heard other people say that his body language is not what it needs to be a lot of the time. Look, you're absolutely right. Everybody can't be a certain – yeah, you like – look, Peyton Manning got upset when he threw a pick, Tom Brady, but they ain't send him in no damn shell. Yeah. No.

37:39Shannon Sharpe:It's a part of the game. Look, unless you Aaron Rodgers, when he was in his absolute prime and he was playing 16 games and throwing five interceptions, unless you got to having that type of season, you're probably throwing double digits.

37:54Joe Johnson:And you know what the issue is too, Uncle Joe? What's that? The fact that he hasn't played well and now everything is magnified. Yep. Everything is magnified now. So they're finding every little thing to nitpick and maybe not nitpick.

38:09Shannon Sharpe:He did that to himself, Ocho, by having that great rookie season. Yeah. So, Ocho, if you go out there, and let's just say your rookie year, you catch 85 balls, 1 ,350 yards, and 12 touchdowns, what do you think the expectation is going to be moving forward? Do the same thing the following when you're a better? Prime example, Randy Moss. When Randy Moss came out of his rookie year and had 17 touchdowns, what were the expectations moving forward? Not only were they up here, he exceeded them. Yeah. CJ did this to himself. You could have stunk it up. We wouldn't have had no expectations. And then if you play bad like you did in the postseason last year, we would have talked it up.

38:53Shannon Sharpe:Said, hey, this is what – but no, you set the bar here.

38:56Chad Johnson:Yeah.

38:56Shannon Sharpe:Once you set the bar here, we ask you to continually clear that bar.

39:01Chad Johnson:Yep. And it becomes expectation. And that's what we expect to see week in and week out. Same thing with LeBron. We talk about his greatness. It don't matter how many damn years he done been in the NBA. Every team that he goes to, they expect it to win.

39:18Shannon Sharpe:They do. Period. Point. Look at the odds. Look at what clearly odds went to when LeBron joined the team. Look at what they were and then what they were. You're talking about this is what y 'all expect from a 42. You're damn right. He shouldn't be so great. Ain't nobody tell his ass to be this great this damn long. That's just the way it is. When you set a level of greatness for yourself, that's the level of expectation. That's why when a guy does a song, man, this album don't hit like that first one. Hello. Yeah. Well, you shouldn't have sold 10 million damn copies. You should have sold 300 ,000.

39:54Shannon Sharpe:And then nobody wouldn't have been saying the second album don't sound bad.

39:58Chad Johnson:Right.

39:59Shannon Sharpe:But when you sell 10 million copies, you sell 15 million copies. Look at him. him. If you Eminem, he didn't have no choice. You can't come out there that hard and then, man, so you're a one hit wonder. Yeah. Milli Vanilli, ice ice baby.

40:18Joe Johnson:Yeah, damn. I just hate the fact now when something like this gets out, now you got to think he's been this way all his life. Now when things don't go well, he has to pretend and have to, you know, he has to be performative and act as if, oh, damn, and be, you know, and just, I don't know. It's weird, but I kind of get it. You know what cures this too, Unc? What's that? Going out there and winning. Hello. You know what's unfortunate? The fact that we're having this conversation about his mannerisms and acting like he doesn't care is the fact that he has to, he got to play the goddamn Bengals Sunday.

40:53Joe Johnson:You hear me? And he's not finna win. So we're going to be having this conversation again come Sunday because we going into Houston, NRG Stadium, or feel, whatever it's called, and we putting BTA. Damn. Okay. That goes to all my Houston fans in the chat. I'll be sitting in the stands behind the bench. We can argue all game. And if you come over there, make sure you bring me a hot dog.

41:19Chad Johnson:Hey, them boys, they're coming off a loss now. I know they ain't finna, they ain't finna come home. Nah. Nah.

41:26Shannon Sharpe:And the offense really, even with the two turnovers, the offense didn't play bad. The defense allowed a 96-yard game-winning drive. We saw the defense give up 36 points. We saw Josh Allen had two touchdown passes, two touchdown rushing against the number one, number two defense last year. That's who should be disappointed. That's who's going to be pissed off, Ocho.

41:45Joe Johnson:Hey, can I tell you something?

41:46Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. Didn't I see Nico Collins on the injury report? I don't know. I didn't see that today, Ocho. I've been busy trying to get some stuff together. He on the injury report? I could have swore I saw somebody with a little hamstring, something.

41:58Joe Johnson:He ain't practicing.

41:59Chad Johnson:I'm glad you said that, boy. I got to check my fantasy. I got to make sure I get him on the bench. Oh, you got Nico?

42:06Joe Johnson:Yeah. Hamstring? Uh-oh.

42:10Chad Johnson:Yeah, I got to get him out of there.

42:12Joe Johnson:Hey, Tank there. Don't come back to week four, right? Damn. I didn't know that, boy.

42:18Chad Johnson:Hey, Joe.

42:19Joe Johnson:Hey, Nigel, you was real confident talking about they just came off a loss. They going to beat us.

42:24Chad Johnson:Yeah, I think, hey, hey, hey, CJ gonna have to show us something, Ocho.

42:28Joe Johnson:Hey, show you what?

42:29Chad Johnson:He gonna have to show you next week. Not this week. Hey, hey, hey, he at home. He at home, Ocho. You think he finna let somebody come on this front porch, knock on his door, talking about less fighting? He gonna go out there and lose? That man ain't gonna lose?

42:42Joe Johnson:I'm gonna tell you something right now, and this goes for everybody in the chat. If you got common sense, listen, Jamar Chase had two catches for 12 yards last week. Jamar Chase makes 40, 41 million, right? Something like that? Yep, four and a half. What you think they finna do to that young bull out there in Houston? Where they gon' have Stingley and Lasseter playing man-to-man? What you think they finna do to Jamar?

43:05Chad Johnson:Ocho, Ocho. Do he want...

43:07Joe Johnson:Man, they gon' feed him like it's 20 years a slave, what?

43:10Chad Johnson:Ocho. Ocho. Ocho. Do he want to win or do he want the stats? Which one he want? You can't have... He probably ain't gon' be the half of them. He might have two touchdowns for 150 with the L.

43:21Joe Johnson:That's all I'm saying. No, no, no. That's not gon' happen. That's not going to happen. Don't A. L. No, no, L. No, L must stand for LSU. L must stand for Louisiana. That's the only L you're talking about. I'm telling you what's going to happen. This is the way the flow of the game goes. This is the way a team, when a player of that magnitude, makes that kind of money and he has an off game, they don't play that next game. They will not allow that to happen the following game. For one, he already missed.

43:47Chad Johnson:Well, listen, can I say something? If I'm a team just come off the road and I got my home opener, Uncle Ocho, and I lost on the road, and I come home in my home. Boy, listen, do you know I'm finna do everything I can for us to get this dub. Y 'all ain't finna come in here and show out on our field. We ain't having that, Ocho. I'm sorry. I know what you want. But, boy, we ain't having that. We finna get down. Hey, Joe, can I say something? Go ahead.

44:12Joe Johnson:Every time Joe go against me at what I'm saying, do you realize I win every single time? Am I always right? Every time, Joe. And you're doing it again. like when you're going to disagree with me and be like, you know what, Ocho, you're right. Because every time I go against what you're saying, for some reason, I always end up losing.

44:30Chad Johnson:No, I ain't going with you this way. I'm sorry.

44:33Joe Johnson:So hold on. Okay. So you're saying that the Texans are going to beat us Sunday. That's why I want to hear you say that.

44:39Chad Johnson:Yeah, I got the Texans beating you. If I'm a betting man, if I'm a betting man, if I'm a betting man, I'm going to bet the Texans is going to – I might use prize picture. I might need to make a couple bets this weekend. You know what?

44:52Shannon Sharpe:You got to bet more or less.

44:54Chad Johnson:Yeah, yeah, yeah. What, I got to use Cole Shannon?

44:57Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. I bet. I got you. Hey, but the thing is, though, Joe, is that if the Texans lose, they would have lost two games at home to start the season. Oh, yeah. Two games. Hold on. Another thing, two AFC games. Now, we're making the playoffs. You don't win your division. Now it comes head-to-head. conference record.

45:24Chad Johnson:Hey, hey, I don't know if he's listening, but CJ, CJ Stroud, if you're listening, hey, boy, you better go out there and do your one-two, you hear me? Yes, sir.

45:35Joe Johnson:Hey, he can do his one-two, but Burrow and Chase, they're going to do the three-four. Oh, yeah? Huh? Huh? Don't go against me when I tell you something, man. Golly, you did the same thing with the NBA playoffs. Let it go. Let it go.

45:52Chad Johnson:Let it go. You steady talking about old stuff. You bring old stuff. We in a new... Come on, man. You got to chill. I got a question, Joe. What's up?

45:57Joe Johnson:Was the Cowboys game last week against the Giants, was that old too?

46:01Chad Johnson:No, it ain't that old, but you know. We got a little fork in the road. You know, had a little mishap. It happens. Yeah, we ain't going to go 16-0.

46:15Shannon Sharpe:But the fact of the matter, Ocho, you know what he's trying? He's trying to get 70 million. He just put pressure on himself. He could have took that$55 to$58 million and moved them on about his business. I couldn't. Right, right, right.

46:25Chad Johnson:Hold on. He probably think like, hell, I can get that$50 million. I can get that even if we have a, you know, a not so good year. You know, I'm swinging for the fences, man. Hey, you know what I mean, I got some of you.

46:40Shannon Sharpe:Go ahead. Go ahead, Ocho. I got some of my teeth that y 'all ain't even tell me, man. Man, ain't nobody can see from way back there, man. What the hell you think I got?

46:49Chad Johnson:Oh, man. Yeah.

46:51Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, ain't nothing but a little public hair. For my cigar.

46:54Chad Johnson:Yeah, you. Oh, man. Oh, man.

46:59Shannon Sharpe:Listen, he ain't say pubic. He said public. He could be anybody. No, I meant to say that. But they know what type of hair it was.

47:08Joe Johnson:It was my cigar, a little cigar leaf. That what it was? Yeah, yeah, yeah. So they say.

47:15Chad Johnson:Yeah.

47:16Joe Johnson:That's what it looked like to me. Hey, my baby noticed the way watching from way in Boston, man. And y 'all ain't even tell me nothing.

47:25Chad Johnson:I ain't see it. I ain't neither.

50:53Shannon Sharpe:Oh, we got a very special guest joining us. Welcome to the club. Chargers linebacker Dayon Henley. Eight tackles, half a sack, a quarterback hit. Unfortunately, the Chargers lost to the Cardinals. They are. Bro, bro. Hey, you know what the expectations are. Considering what you guys accomplished last year, you know the expectations are even higher this year. What happened? Hold on, hold on now. Hold on now. I might be acting like, y 'all, let me make sure. Y 'all can see me? Yeah, we got you. We can hear and see you. Hold on, let me make sure. Oh, here we go. It's on good. We good? Yeah, we great.

51:30I appreciate y 'all having me back in the building, first of all. You know what I'm saying?

51:33Shannon Sharpe:You know what I'm saying? I appreciate you coming on. I don't know what you heard. I don't know what you heard. You had a great game last week. You had eight tackles, half a sack, quarterback hit. But unfortunately, you guys lost. You do know what the expectations are, given that you guys went to the playoffs last year. What happened? What went wrong in this game? Coach Harbaugh said he probably should have played y 'all a little more in the preseason because a lot of the things that showed up in that game probably could have been rectified if you had played a little bit more in the preseason.

51:59I mean, just to harp off what he said, I agree 100%. I'm always going to ride with Coach Harbaugh. He knows best, as always. And I think, you feel me, what he's just saying is when you've got new coaching staff, offense, defense, the continuity has to be built. And so for us to get those reps and real game experiences, it's big time. So I 100 % agree with everything he said. I feel me, we can go back in time. I know we'll do it the right way. But right now, we're pressing on, moving forward. it happened and uh we trying to you know make sure it don't happen again

52:33Joe Johnson:what's what's what's the the atmosphere like obviously wednesday today's probably the the main day when it comes to install what was the atmosphere like just defensively for you guys i mean we uh we know what's ahead of us right uh that's that's kind of the atmosphere we a high spirited uh group of individuals that's determined and and know that we destined for more so the Energy is up, man. There's no point in looking behind us now. It's just about what's going forward. So we got the right energy, and everybody is ready to install and move forward to the next opponent. And the next opponent is a big one, right?

53:07You know, we got the Raiders, and as our coach would say, they count as two. You know, one win against them count as two just because of our conference and how, you know, things set up when we got our divisional opponents.

53:18Chad Johnson:Yeah. Hey, you're a young guy, but you're leading this defense. You know, how do you hold guys accountable, bro, on defense? I mean, the first thing first is holding yourself accountable, right? Never be a me-me guy or what I did, right? And I think that's what takes the people from looking at you as just a player to looking at you as a leader, right? So for me, it's not about how I perform, whether it's good, bad, or indifferent. It's about making sure I can hold myself accountable and know that there's things I could have did better from communication to tackling to being in areas I could have been.

53:50And then from there, looking at my teammates and saying, you know, I got your back and you got my back. And that's kind of just what it's been going into this week. And especially with guys like Derwin James and Khalil Mack on my side, just talking to them. Their whole thing is, you know, just make sure that we got each other's back at the end of the day.

54:09Shannon Sharpe:When you look at this game, you play the Raiders. That's the division opponent. But you got somebody that you got to really gang tackle. Because you look at him, he's not that big, Aston Gentry. But, boy, is he hard to get on the damn ground. He runs with so much power and he has so much leverage. How do you make sure he doesn't have a game like he had last week to start the season? I mean, like you said, man, all has to the ball. Do you want 11th? But at the end of the day, make sure you get there. And so for us, it's like you said, a game tackle, knowing that that guy's an elite talent over there and he's been proving it.

54:39And so for us to make sure that we respect him as such and that he got to make sure he fills all of us, you know what I'm saying, with respect to his talent. He got to make sure that we come full force. And so we got to make sure. Another thing that we know is with a quarterback that they got over there, Kirk is going to make sure that his players get to do what they do best and make plays for him. And so that means he's going to get the ball to him. So we know what to expect with guys like him, and that's big for us moving forward.

55:06Shannon Sharpe:Look, I don't want you to look too far ahead, but you know what the expectations are for yourself because you were basically in the contract year. You want to show that, look here, I'm a leader of this team. I can lead this team into the future. I don't want y 'all to pay me based on what I've done. I want you to pay me based on what you believe I can do and how can I lead this ball club because you know I'm great in the community. I don't cause you any problems, but I want to get compensated for the work that I believe that I'll do moving forward for this organization. Now, you hit it on the nose.

55:35My number one thing right now is staying focused on the season. You know how it go. You got your agents. They handle that type of stuff, that talk for you. And at the end of the day, my job is on that field right now, and it's at the best time possible. I got to pretty much just lean in and depend on what I've been doing my whole life, and that's just playing ball and being good at it. And so with all the woes that may come my way throughout the season, I got to make sure I put one step forward and make sure that I continue to stay consistent in my job. And when something goes wrong, make sure I can battle back.

56:06Because as we know, you feel me, them guys over there get paid are trying to get paid too, so I know they're not going to make the job easy for me. And with that being said, I got to make sure I make the plays I'm supposed to make when I'm supposed to make them.

56:18Shannon Sharpe:Right. Let me ask you this, bro. Being an L.A. guy, how do you determine who gets to come to the game? Because, bro, hey, because you could easily have 20, 30, 40 tickets a night and you know them tickets. They not, even though your close family, friends and loved ones might think they are free, they're not free. Those tickets are expensive. I just need to say it too because I know they watching the tickets ain't free and I'm saying it right now because I don't say you know I'll be weak be weak in knees when I get the text message and I'll be like cuz I got you or you know what I'm saying I got you I'm weak in knees but since we on the you know the live stage and I ain't gotta say nothing specifically they ain't free tickets bro not free and I'm doing it because I love you but don't take advantage of my love that's what it comes down to but at the end of the day man more times than not I'm getting the people that I know been there for me throughout my whole life I know the people that's been with me through all the ups and the downs so it's easy to say yes to them and to the people that you know necessarily they might have to miss a game or two or three or the whole season because you ain't been there just watching from the couch you know what I'm saying you know catch me on Nightcap with the OG's why did you hold up Joe you knew I was here before you and they didn't give me a main spot

57:45Shannon Sharpe:we found that we don't want to interfere because the first thing that's going to happen if you come in on nightcap as a featured guest the first thing that'll happen if you don't play well man he need to get on nightcap you already know what's going to happen now I respect respect because I can't get the lemon pepper wings where y 'all was at I might have to miss that night so I got to be committed to where I'm at That was a good show. Bravo.

58:11Chad Johnson:Yeah, appreciate that. We appreciate the support, bro. Yeah, yeah. Hey, look, check this out. Go ahead, Joe. Go ahead. How you go from receiver to linebacker, bro? Joe, it's called talent. How you go from receiver? It's called talent. I'm saying, do you miss that position? Do you ever think like, damn, boy, I should have stuck with receiver. I could have been a... I know how Joe, man. You feel me? is no hokey pokey all feet in you know what I'm saying and at the end of the day I say I missed the end zone so that's why I'm trying I'm trying to get to the end zone I think that's the number one thing that might be the biggest thing about being the receiver yeah I missed the end zone I just I think I just said the other day I'm like man I gotta I gotta score in this league I gotta score in the NFL so I'm definitely motivated to get that pick six because I think that's even bigger moment because it doesn't it doesn't happen often and I got guys on my team who've in the league for a long time on defense, ain't never touched the end zone.

59:06So I want to be a guy to get that done before I'm out. You know what I'm saying? So I'm definitely motivated. I feel you.

59:13Shannon Sharpe:Is that why you guys on the defensive side of football now, when y 'all get a turnover, get an interception, get a scoops, a fumble recovery, you guys run to the end zone because you missed that opportunity? Because a lot of you guys did play on the offensive side of football when you were younger and you scored a lot. And so now like, hey, I just want to get to the end zone because, you know, maybe I really will get to the end zone to have the referee raise it all. Hey man, we ain't all blessed enough to be Shannons and Ocho's. So we gotta get to the end zone any way we can. You know what I'm saying?

59:43We gotta get there.

59:46Joe Johnson:When you was in LA, right? And you played receiver, who you played for? When I was in LA. I ain't play no receiver in LA. I was at Crenshaw High School. I was a QB, Crenshaw High School. How long? You a Cougar? Ocho, man. I thought you was a Dorsey Don.

1:00:09Shannon Sharpe:They rivals, man. Don't do something bad like that, Ocho. Is he trolling me?

1:00:14Joe Johnson:Oh, I... Oh, no. I'm dead homie. You too old to be doing this. Ocho, you too old to be doing this. Lock in with me, Ocho. Google free. Google free. And you know better. You know, he done been around these parts. You know better. Oh, did my camera turn off on y 'all?

1:00:37Shannon Sharpe:Hey, you know how you said it? Hold on now, cause it got real. It got real. Let me, let me, let me, let me, let me bring y 'all in. Hold up, it got real. My camera might not. But you got my voice.

1:00:48Joe Johnson:Yeah, we got you locked in. Yeah, yeah. Hey, D, you know, you know, hey listen, you know when I went to Santa Monica, you know I lived in the third building in the jungles, all Coliseum. You went to Santa Monica? Yeah. Yeah, he went to Juco. I was in LA, 97, 98, 99. You see how they had to change angles on you real quick? Right, right, right. Let me tell you why I changed angles. Because shit got serious. You playing with me. Now I got the upper hand on you now. You went to Santa Monica, and you lived in the jungles? Yeah. Yeah, in the third building. I was dating a girl named Roxy at the time.

1:01:23I don't know if y 'all know the difference in places from the jungles to Santa Monica.

1:01:29Shannon Sharpe:I know a big difference in Santa Monica I lived in LA for 10 years I know a very big difference I'm saying that's a big identity crisis

1:01:36Joe Johnson:OG who was you who was you trying to be my grandma no my grandma kicked me out she said I can no longer do it I washed my hands with you she sent me to my mama my mama was living in LA she was living in Baldwin Hills off a stalker and the address was 4565 Donson Muscle Drive. I never forget. Apartment number one. So I'm right there. I used to be up at the park. I used to go to Kenneth Hahn and run. I met a little chick named Roxy. She sold weed back then. She sold weed back then. Stayed in the third building. And me and her ex used to get into it all the time. And they were Bleepy. You feel me?

1:02:17Joe Johnson:We used to get into it all the time. You said they were tussling. I was over there with them boys, man. Yeah. Me, T. Rogers. man, I go way back. Me personally, I don't be over there in Pox. I don't be in them Pox. Yeah, I know. But I got family over there too. I got loved ones over there too. But you supposed to be a Santa Monica boy. I am. My mom from Santa Monica. So my granny lived in Santa Monica. My mom from Santa Monica. I got a lot of people over there too now. He over there by the river. You know, my son with the Venice High. So you sent him, you made sure he lived in a nice area? No, I had him when I was out there.

1:03:02Oh, you was all over the place?

1:03:05Joe Johnson:Yeah, yeah, that's what they used to say.

1:03:08Shannon Sharpe:Hey, you lived in LA too? I did, I did. I was in Homby Hills, though. Where? What is that? I was, you know, the Playboy Mansion? I was right down the street from the Playboy Mansion. In between Brentwood and Beverly Hills. Damn. You got money. Hey, you used to go over there? You used to go to the Playboy Mansion? No, he had to. I used to go over there. No, no, no, no. It wasn't, by the time I got there, it wasn't what it used to be. So you. I got there in 2016. I was there from 2016. No, I was there eight years. From 2016 to 2024. So you missed all the play. yeah I missed all the place but I wasn't there for that day I'm a purpose guy whatever my purpose is that's what I'm there for there's a time and a place for all that but I'm more purpose driven that's PR right there y 'all ladies and gentlemen that's PR that's PR because at the end of the day you could have said any location you was next to and you chose that one okay how about this here you say you didn't understand what Humber Hills was so I had to give you a general location cause everybody know where the playboy hey Joe ain't mentioned I'm right there next to Bel-Air that could have been good you could have said that you could have said that and Joe you was in LA too at some point

1:04:42Chad Johnson:man you know what I was in LA bro back in 2001 I was out there training for the draft so if the draft was in June I probably got out there by like I don't know, by like March. And I was out there in Santa Monica training at this little high school gym they got out there. Rob Markman 1 ,0190 You said draft 2001? Rob Markman 1 ,0190 Yeah, 2001, bro.

1:05:03Joe Johnson:Rob Markman 1 ,0190 Hey, you know what's funny? Hey, D.H., you know how long ago this was? You got to think. I was in LA. This is during the heyday. We talking about 97, 98, 99. I used to train at West LA. Pac-Man, Pac-Man was out there. I think you might have been too young though. Rob Markman 1 ,0190 I wasn't here yet. Rob Markman 1 ,0190 Oh, you weren't even born yet? Rob Markman 1 ,0190 I was 99. Okay, okay, yeah, yeah, yeah. Hey, hey, hey.

1:05:27Chad Johnson:When I was out there, the Lakers was humming. That was Kobe and Shaq was running things out there, boy. Hey, yeah. I got to see, I got to see Kobe. Did you really? I mean, I seen him win the ring.

1:05:42Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. Oh, yeah, in 2009 and 10. I keep it on me. Yeah.

1:05:49Joe Johnson:Hey, who y 'all got this Sunday? The Raiders. Oh, man, on the set. Y 'all got them, man, on the set. Come on, I'm still in the lead. We respect all. Don't do me. Don't give me clipped. Respect to them dudes. Come on now. Hey, respect to them dudes.

1:06:10Shannon Sharpe:Respect. Come on, don't be PC. That's PR right there. That's PR right there. Because that's what he could have said. You see what he did? You see what he did? You got respect for them. You know, we got respect for our opponents. Hey, hey. Respect for it.

1:06:27Shannon Sharpe:You got me. You got me, hey, man. I know you. Yeah, man. We appreciate you joining us, man. We'll let you get back to the studio, man. Thank you for joining us on the weeknight. We greatly, greatly appreciate that. Wish you best of luck. Hey, after the win, come on and join us on Sunday, man. That's the plan. I'm with it. All right, bro. Appreciate you, man. All the best. Let me get a ticket, too. Let me get my rating note. It don't matter. Oh, I got it. Tell me what you want. Hey, hold on, hold on. What's your right now? I don't even know, but I know it ain't what I want it to be. You probably, you probably a 95.

1:06:56That's not where I'm at.

1:06:59Joe Johnson:I think you are. That's why nobody believed you was in the league. You know, De 'Jane Love messed it up for you. He messed it up for you. They don't even believe you. You don't look like you was in the league. They don't even believe you. It's like they used to just say your name. Now they gotta Google you. Yeah. Yeah.

1:07:18Shannon Sharpe:All right, bro. I wanna see y 'all. I appreciate it, Day-O, man. Have a good one. Stay healthy, man. We'll talk to you soon. Bet.

1:07:30Shannon Sharpe:Double Dipping will catch you slipping. The NFL has sent a memo to teams informing them that Daquan Wright and Xavier Harris are ineligible to visit or try out with them during the 2026 season. Wright and Harris were granted a temporary restraining order that allowed them to return to college football this season. But the backlash from conferences over the plan to sign with LSU ultimately ended the possibility. Any sympathy for these guys? No. Go to Canada. No.

1:07:57Joe Johnson:You can't this year. You stuck like Chuck. Hey, if you love football like you say you do and you want to play, go down to Canada and prove yourself. Go down to Canada and prove yourself. You want to play football. And if you think it's easy, go down there and watch what happens.

1:10:00Joe Johnson:Hey, Joe, it ain't no mud. Boy, it's the real deal down there in Canada, boy.

1:10:04Chad Johnson:Yeah, you got to love football if you go down there playing.

1:10:07Joe Johnson:Yeah. Joe, now think about this now. I know it's Canada. A lot of people don't respect the CFL, obviously, because the first thing we look at is they don't make the kind of money we make here in the NFL.

1:10:18Chad Johnson:Yeah.

1:10:19Joe Johnson:But, Joe, it ain't no different. When it comes to the state, we have your elite players in the NFL. Yeah. They're in a class of their own. But when it comes to the two, three, the fours, it's no different than down there. It's the same level of talent because just a bunch of people from the States. That's all it is. And obviously, they have an allotment for Canadian players. But there's only so many spots on the NFL roster.

1:10:42Chad Johnson:Yeah.

1:10:43Joe Johnson:And there are other dudes that love the game, that couldn't play, number crunching, politics, might have made mistakes, you know, in college and didn't get the opportunity to make it to the NFL. Where do you think they playing at, Joe? Man, when I tell you it was a wake-up call when I went down in Canada that one year and I thought I was going to go out there.

1:11:02Shannon Sharpe:But you wasn't Ocho then. You was Chad. They had the script. Coach Belichick had the script. You were Ocho.

1:11:08Joe Johnson:Yeah, but think about this. It's just the mindset of I think it's going to be easy. And it was a huge wake-up call.

1:11:18Chad Johnson:Yeah. Because I get there, and it ain't like that.

1:11:20Joe Johnson:I had to lay some shoes up tight, Joe.

1:11:22Chad Johnson:Yeah.

1:11:23Joe Johnson:I really had to go. I really had to go. And I'm talking to dudes, and I'm seeing dudes week to week, and we playing different games. We playing Ottawa, and we playing Saskatchewan. We playing... The Argonauts. Yeah, Argonauts. I think I'm missing some of the names. But I'm like, dude, why are you here? Why are you in Canada? I'm looking... You're looking like dudes I've seen on Sunday for the past decade. I messed up in school. I got in trouble. I had a warrant. And it's always something that happened that didn't allow them to get to the NFL. I'm talking about Joe. I know what it's supposed to look like.

1:12:05Joe Johnson:And I'm looking at y 'all, I'm like, ain't no way in hell you're not on the 53-man roster somewhere in the States. And everybody had a story about something that happened in college. It's just every time. And I'm like, nah.

1:12:19Shannon Sharpe:No, I don't. The question was, do I feel? Because guess what? You should have just said, look here, I'm done with college. and what I'm going to do, I'm going to try to make a team. If I get cut, hopefully I get a try, get a call, and I'm going to try to make that team. Now you tried to be slick. Now look at you. Yeah. Now you're in purgatory. You can't go back to college. You can't try for a team in the NFL. Now look at you, stuck. What happens next year, Unc? How does that work? Oh, they can't get drafted again, but a team can sign them as a free agent. Hey, hold on, hold on.

1:12:51Chad Johnson:I get what Uncle Ocho, I get what y 'all are saying. Yeah. These kids were trying to take advantage of the loophole that was in college football. And it didn't happen. I don't necessarily blame them for that. I blame the system for that. Now, considering the fact that if they ain't NFL material and they were trying to go back and capitalize off college football, all right, that's one thing. But if you got an opportunity to play in the NFL and you got talent, I think you should pursue that, bro. I don't understand why you would be trying to go back to college, but I understand the loophole that was in it, so take advantage of it.

1:13:27Chad Johnson:But these guys should – I mean, the NFL, man, hey, what we talking about? Yeah.

1:13:35Shannon Sharpe:But that's the thing, Joe. They tried to get slick. Yeah. They're like, well, you know, I ain't made the NFL. Let me go back there and get me some NIL money. Nah, bro, you grown now. It's time to man up. It's time to man up. You won't be the first person that got cut, had to go out and try for several teams. Look at James Harrison is a great story. The man got cut three or four times, turned himself into a defensive player of the year, a multiple-time All-Pro. Nah, bro. It happens. D-Boy ain't tried to be bad. Let me go back to Kent State. Huh?

1:14:13Chad Johnson:Hey, you got to be cut from a different cloth to move like that, though. But when you, hey, I'm saying when you feel like you ain't good enough and you got to get back to the drawing board, Ocho, come on, man, it take a different type of guy to be able to lock in like that. If you come in with expectations or no expectations and you like, look, they don't think I can play, and then you take yourself into a defensive player of the year, come on, man, you got to be a little different now.

1:14:40Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, but you can't give up at the slightest. See, those guys gave up at the slightest, Ocho and Joe, and they tried to go back to college. They gave him out. Yes. Yeah. I'm going to find a way. Hello. I'm going to find a way. It happens. You're not the first. You won't be the last. A lot of great players. Look at Kurt Warner. Another great story. Yeah. That man was playing in an arena. A two-time league MVP. Super Bowl MVP. He's in the Hall of Fame. Kurt got a gold jacket. Yeah. Man. Didn't Kurt play in Canada too? I don't know if he played in Canada. I think he just played in arena football.
