In short
Best-of NFL News roundup covering (1) New York Giants QB Jackson Dart’s season-ending knee injury and what it means for the team’s QB plan, (2) debate over Arizona Cardinals WR Marvin Harrison Jr. being underused and potentially a “bust,” and (3) Steelers CB Joey Porter Jr. contract talk plus injury/availability chatter, all framed as part of the league’s current injury situation.
Guest backgrounds
The episode features three hosts: Shannon Sharpe (former NFL player/analyst), plus two co-hosts (one referred to as “Uncle Ocho” and another as “Joe/Ocho”), who discuss teams and players from a veteran football perspective.
Key claims
- Dart’s MCL/PCL/meniscus injury likely ends his season; Harbaugh says he’s out for the regular season.
- Giants’ backup Jameis Winston is entertaining but a turnover risk; they may “check the market” but can’t find a true game-changer.
- Harrison Jr. has only 1 catch in two games; coach Mike LaFleur downplays making him the focal point, citing other roles (Trey McBride, Kendrick Bourne, etc.); hosts argue this usage doesn’t match his draft status.
- Porter Jr. is valuable enough for a new contract, but negotiations hinge on how the Steelers value him relative to top-tier corners.
Notable examples
- Winston’s “turnover machine” reputation (3–5 picks in stretches) contrasted with Dart’s mobility (scrambles for 15–20 yards).
- Harrison compared to expectations like Jamar Chase/JSN-level production; discussion of “change of scenery”/trade.

2:45Shannon Sharpe:The worst possible outcome from the New York Giants, Jackson Dart, is out for the season with a damage to his MCL, PCL, and meniscus. Despite the reports, John Harbaugh isn't ruling Dart out for the entire 22-26 season. Let's take a listen to what Harbs had to say. It's obviously been reported your quarterback suffered a pretty significant injury. How big a loss would it be without him? Yeah, it's a big loss for sure. I mean, it's your starting quarterback. It's a tough loss. What's the timeline?
3:23Joe Johnson:Regular season, at least, I would say. He's out for the regular season, don't you?
3:31Joe Johnson:It's an A. It's an A. The injury. When you say regular season, are you hopeful that maybe he can come back for both seasons? Is that what you're saying? I think I said it. Yeah. I said it. Regular season.
3:48Shannon Sharpe:they kept prying trying to get into specifics of what he said knee there's several there's acl there's patella there's mcl there's meniscus there's pcl there's a lot of things going on in the knee and they tried to get harbs to narrow it down but you saw he kept evading it said it's his knee he also said he's out for the regular season well you mean he can come back for the postseason, John Harbaugh in his most realistic expectations is hard for me to believe that he thinks he can make... I don't know how many teams are equipped to make a postseason run without their starting quarterback. I'm going to open up for you and Joe, you and Ocho.
4:26Shannon Sharpe:Ocho, what do you think? This is the worst possible scenario. They said four to six weeks because that's what they thought it was, an MCL injury. Come to find out, it's much worse than what they previously thought.
4:37Joe Johnson:Well, it's bad. It's very bad for the New York Giants, it's bad for Giants fans, and it's bad for the Giants organization. Jackson Dart gives them their best opportunity to have a chance to win. To have a chance to win. Now, as far as the postseason is concerned, it all depends on how Jackson Dart would have played throughout this season. Obviously, having to start your backup and Jameis Winston, we know that we've seen Jameis Winston before in Tampa Bay, have a very good season, but the only problem is he's a turnover machine. He can go on a heater, though. He can go on a heater and have some crazy games.
5:10Joe Johnson:He could string together four or five games and play unbelievable throwing for an enormous amount of yards. But within that timetable and time frame, he'll throw three picks, four picks, five picks. And so he turns the ball over a lot. Listen, he's at the helm now. He's at the helm. But what they did do, what they do have, is Harbaugh has Joe Flacco, if I'm not mistaken. Wasn't Joe Flacco traded to the Giants? No. No, that was the fake account. It was? Oh, man, I'm on the plane. I thought it really happened. There ain't nobody giving no fourth-round pick for Joe Flacco. Okay, okay. But listen, you think about Harbaugh and having familiarity with Joe Flacco, I'm not sure if that will happen.
5:56Joe Johnson:It probably wouldn't be a fourth round. I think it would make sense, you know, as far as with Jameis Winston and the struggles he may have with turning the ball over. Right now, you still have a chance. It's early in the season. You're going into week three. You see how James Winston plays. If it's not good enough or to your liking, you can always make that trade with Flacco, if need be, because you're familiar with him as a quarterback. What do you think, Joe? I think it's very unfortunate for the New York Giants, Uncle Ocho. And I think it's unfortunate for Jackson Dart, considering the fact that he came into this season already off of injury, trying to get back, trying to bring that pizzazz back to New York.
6:39him and Scatterboo, which they obviously got off to a great start against my Cowboys. But, man, to have this devastating injury happen, I mean, for the Giants, what do they do? I don't think you can go and get some young electric quarterback because then it's probably going to be hard to get rid of them. You know what I mean?
7:00Shannon Sharpe:I don't think there's nothing out there available. And even Jameis at his absolute best, Ocho, when he's had that historic season threw for over 5 ,000 yards. They still missed the playoffs. He's not that quarterback. He's never the most athletic quarterback. Now he's even less athletic than he was back then. But guess what? His turnover rate is still just as high, which makes the situation even worse because you're a team that's undermanned to begin with, and now you have a guy at the helm. Yeah, he'll put the ball up. He'll give his guys an opportunity, but he'll also give the other guys an opportunity.
7:38Shannon Sharpe:So he's an equal opportunity. Yeah, he worked for the EEOC. He's an equal opportunity. He'll hire somebody. You get a pick. You get a touchdown. You get a pick. You get a fumble recovery. You get a hand up for a touchdown. Oh, he all about that? Oh, yeah, absolutely. But that's who he is. And I think the thing is, you know, Bruce Arians had a quote saying, no risk it, no biscuit. But I think the thing is, you have to take calculated risk. Sometimes I think Jameis throws a little bit, throws too much caution to the wind. Like, I don't care what happens. I'm throwing it.
8:11Joe Johnson:Yeah. He going to let it rip down. Hey, we talk about a quarterback, you know, pushing the ball down the field. He going to give you some chances. So as a receiver, you like that he's very aggressive with the ball, but he puts the ball in harm's way too much.
8:26Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. Too much. Yes. And that doesn't go over well. You know, Jameis sometimes, he's starting to turn the ball over. It goes over bad like passing gas in church. That don't go over well, guys. That's Jameis. The turnover, Joe, they find it good. Okay, you have a Matt Ryan night. You throw four touchdowns with one turnover, I can live with that. But if you two and three, two touchdowns, three turnovers, it's hard. There aren't very many teams that's equipped to overcome poor quarterback play or mistake-prone play from the quarterback. There aren't very many teams equipped like that. Maybe Kansas City can overcome that.
9:06Shannon Sharpe:Joe Burrow can have a bad, you know, have to throw a pick, maybe a fumble, and they can overcome it. Josh Allen team. But they're not six teams in the league that's really equipped when their quarterback doesn't play well or turn the ball over. They're able to overcome that.
9:21Joe Johnson:You know, it's funny, now that you mentioned that about the teams, the 32 teams in NFL, and you look at the backup. Everyone doesn't have a situation like Kyler Murray going down and Carson Wentz coming in and having the success that he did have. Drew Locke in Seattle. Drew Locke. I would just get rid of saying that. Drew Locke in Seattle. But also, think about this. Look at the supporting cast that those number two quarterbacks are going into. If you're just decent, just decent in having that kind of supporting cast around you, those are the type of supporting cast that elevate the quarterback play.
9:55Joe Johnson:The quarterback doesn't have to elevate them. Every team isn't equipped with that kind of talent. That's E.E. talent surrounding you, especially with your number one receivers.
10:04Shannon Sharpe:And especially you look at Cincinnati. If Joe Burrow would, and hopefully he seems very, very healthy, knock on wood. But if he were to miss a game or two, Joe Flacco can keep you afloat for a game or two. Oh, yeah. Because now you look at their defense and the way they play with Sexy Dexy and Knight chasing down everything. They're equipped to withstand that. But you have to have certain elements when your quarterback goes down. You have to have a defense that's very, very stingy. And like you said, you got a Chase. You got a Higgins. You got guys that can elevate the quarterback play around him.
10:38Shannon Sharpe:You be in prime position. Drew Locke, you look at his situation in Seattle. Look at what he has defensively. Look at the weapons that he possess offensively. Now they can withstand Sam Darnold being out for a game or two. Everybody is not equipped to handle that. So we'll see. So what are you thinking, Joe? So what do you think the Giants? You think they go out? Are they secure with Jameis? Or are they scraping like, what can we do? Is there somebody out there that we can trade for that can give us an opportunity? I'm not saying that, you know, hey, win us 10 games, but at least keep us competitive.
11:16Yeah, I think they're going to look, Ocho. They're going to check the market. Now, I don't know if you're going to find somebody who's going to be able to come in right away and keep things going kind of like how Jackson Dart did. But I like Jamison as a backup, but starting and leading my team, I can't Ocho, it's kind of the same thing we've been saying over and over. Yeah, he'll have games where he might throw for three touchdowns, maybe four touchdowns. But hell, if you got just as many picks, bro, sometimes, you know, it's kind of, you know, it ain't good for you. But I don't really know what's out there for the Giants, honestly.
11:48I really don't. I don't know what they can go get. Like I said, I've been hearing a lot of rumblings of different quarterbacks. I just can't see them bringing in a real game changer because it's like Jackson Dart is our quarterback. It don't matter who comes in here and plays well. This is our quarterback. I got a question.
12:07Joe Johnson:Go ahead. And y 'all can correct me if I'm wrong. What do you think about Russell Wilson coming back? No? Yes? No? Maybe? Hold on. Wasn't he with the Giants last year? Hey, listen. He knows the system. That's a different system, though, Joe. I'm seeing maybe Russell Wilson coming back. That's a different system. That's right. That's right. So, you know, I'm going back to Joe Flacco. Listen, Harbaugh's system, offensively. You know, even though Harbaugh's the defensive guy, right?
12:37Shannon Sharpe:Well, actually, he was a special teams guy. He was a special teams coach in Philly and got the job. So he's more of a manager. He lets his offensive coordinator call plays. He lets his defensive coordinator call plays. He doesn't really interfere. He's listening to what's going on. I'm sure he makes suggestions. No, I think in this situation we probably should run it. No, I think we should pass it. I think we should play this coverage. No, I like that coverage. He's more of a delegator or an overseer as opposed to being so much of hands-on. That's what I would deduce from observing him for all these years.
13:08Shannon Sharpe:I don't really know him that well. Obviously, I've met him. Excuse me, Chad. Being in Baltimore and going around and being so I know him a little bit, not like I know probably some of the other guys that, you know, like in Denver, I know the coaches because I'm very familiar with Denver and only spent a couple of years in Baltimore. But that's the thing. When your quarterback goes down so early in the season and you don't really get a chance to get a rhythm, ain't nobody got a rhythm before. Now, all of a sudden, Joe, we got a whole new quarterback in here. We got to change because what Jackson Dart is good at is his legs and mobility.
13:44Shannon Sharpe:Jameis Winston is horrible. That play the other night with Jameis, when everybody has vacated, Jackson Darnes is going to pick up 15, 20 yards on that. Jameis Winston got tackled for a two-yard loss, got sacked for a two-yard loss. That is the difference between the two.
14:02Joe Johnson:I tell you what Jameis will give you. He's going to be entertaining as hell. I tell you that. I'm talking about it with his feel on the play. He's going to make some amazing plays at times. Even though he's not a dual threat, he's going to make some amazing throws at times, but it's the mistakes. Oh, he's a dual threat?
14:19Shannon Sharpe:It's just in the turnover department. He'll throw a pick and fumble. He'll do a thing. I'm just saying. It all depends on what you mean by dual threat. Right, right, right. And I think Jamison, he a great leader on that Ocho, but, you know, they need great football players here at the quarterback position. Yeah, I mean, all that's fine and dandy. You know, I'll be fired up here when I hear him say one of them speeches. You know what I mean? Maybe we go out there and get our eyes beat out, Joe.
14:48Shannon Sharpe:the same wall that we were willing to jump over we jumping back over that bad back here is something terrible so yeah they got some work to do boy I know it's very unfortunate though damn it is injuries are very like I said Ocho you really didn't have to experience that but as somebody had went through injuries early in his career but it's tough. Right. And you're like, man, I say my prayers, I eat, I'm living right. Damn, why this can't happen to me?
15:21Joe Johnson:Well, hold on. Hold on. I did experience that, remember? In the playoffs. First round of the playoffs.
15:26Shannon Sharpe:I'm saying you personally, you, I mean, an injury happened to you. Yeah, you had Carson go down the first play.
15:31Joe Johnson:Yeah, I would hurt. I would hurt. Hey, Joe, my quarterback went down, Joe. Yeah. And they was allowing the Steelers to dictate what we wanted to do offensively. Because once your starting quarterback goes out, the play calling changes. The play calling changes. So they were a little bit more vanilla, which I think they shouldn't have been because we have a veteran quarterback in John Kitten at the time. Man, let's go. What we doing? And they letting them people double and triple. Man, Joe, boy, halftime came, Joe. And I was getting the IV. Man, Joe, I snatched that shit. Man, Joe, I was hot.
16:04Shannon Sharpe:And see, me being the person that I am, I had that story. I could have went and said, man, oh, Joe, act a fool at halftime. Yeah, yeah. You spend everything in the home for consumption.
16:18Joe Johnson:But listen, hey, Joe, you got to think now. Joe, I've never had a winning season. I've been there since 2001. You mean finally, after four, five years, Joe, we finally have a good season. We stringing it. I'm talking about from week one, Joe. I mean, week to week, we going crazy offensively. And all of a sudden, you know, we have a small mishap. the start of the quarterback goes down and everything changes.
16:43Shannon Sharpe:Like, come on. What do you think? Jimmy G is a free agent. You think Jimmy G is a viable option? You think the 49ers will be with him? Based on Brock Purdy's history, I'm not trading Matt Jones because I know I got a very competent quarterback in Matt Jones that if something were to happen to Brock Purdy, say, for three or four weeks, I know Matt Jones can keep the ship steady. I also know that if something were for an extended period of time, I believe in Mac Jones. Mac Jones has led a team to the playoffs. Mac Jones played well in the absence of Brock Purdy. So I know what I got in him. And plus, I don't have to have somebody come in and I have to teach him the system.
17:21Shannon Sharpe:Mac Jones knows the system. JJ McCarthy, is he a viable option? I don't think he's a viable option because I don't want two young quarterbacks on my roster because eventually I'm going to have to get rid of one of them, Ocho. they're not going to be one is not going to be happy backing up the other. They're very close to hell. They might have came out the same year. No, no. Jackson Dart is second year. This is J.J. McCarthy, third year. So they're a year apart. Nah.
17:48Joe Johnson:So. Hey, I like it. Who was that that said Jimmy G? Was that you, Unc, or Joe? Me.
17:53Shannon Sharpe:Nah, it was Unc.

17:54Joe Johnson:Yeah, I like that.
17:55Shannon Sharpe:What about Joe Milton? Better by trading the Cowboys. Cowboys, y 'all, Joe, you looking to make a deal?

18:11Shannon Sharpe:He don't need to be on there. What you know about browsers? Anyway. Anyway. Yeah, yeah. Oh, my bad. Oh, is that a for real?

22:22Shannon Sharpe:The Steelers quarterback, Joey Porter, was talking cash-ish about facing Jamar Chase and Higgins if he was to play on Sunday against the Bengals. Take a listen to what Joey Peace Jr. had to say. Opposite tight. Yeah, you know, it's always a good matchup with the Bengals and what they got over there, their talent, you know, and I always wanted to sharpen iron on iron. So definitely getting out there with those guys is always a good matchup. Is there any help that you're familiar with this team, those receivers, this offense as far as ramping up and not needing to know what they do this week? I mean, yeah, I played them six times.
22:59T and Chase five times each because they both hurt one time out of the six. But, yeah, I feel like I have a good indication on those guys and what they like to do, and I never really struggled against them. So it's always been fun for me getting out there. Ooh.
23:13Joe Johnson:Hey. You heard what the man said, OJ. I hear him talking. Listen, I never really struggled against him. T.R., you know, Jamar, I like the way he's talking, but I'll tell you one thing. You ain't played in two games, right? Yeah. You ain't played in two games. You think you're going to get off, get off, not off the couch. You're working out. You know, you're nursing a back injury, if I'm not mistaken. Now, listen, Joey Porter Jr., really good. I like young Bull, even though he's a stealer. Because guess what? Every snap, you know where he going to be at? Where?
23:43Shannon Sharpe:Right here in your face. Football is finally back, and PrizePix is bringing out its best offer yet. New users who sign up get$150 in lineups if you win your first$5 lineup. If he's going to be there Sunday, that's what you need to know.
24:51Joe Johnson:Hey, no, I don't need to know that. I don't need to know that because he's going to get what's coming to him. What do you got coming? Hey, listen, if he thinks he's going to get out there without playing any games and strap anything up over there wearing a striped helmet, well, he's got another thought coming. You hear me? He got fresh legs, Ocho. He ain't played. He ain't got no way to do it. That's the problem. He ain't played. And you got to come deal with them boys there? Man, listen, man. That's like riding the car with no seatbelt, boy. Everything's going to be open. Huh? What we talking about?
25:24Joe Johnson:And I like Joey Porter Jr., boy. Hey. Hey, Joe. Straight man to man. I'm in your face, in your grill. Every play. First down, second down, third down. You're going to have to show me you can get open. I like it. Real physical, too, at the point of attack. I like it. Yeah. But, hey, he ain't doing nothing. It sounds good. He ain't doing nothing. Hey, hey, hey. Hey, that AFC North, that division a little different now.
25:49Shannon Sharpe:Hey, he's the best in the world, Joe. At that rate of talking, you would expect him to play, but I don't know if I expect him to play. Reading the tea leaves and reading all the articles I can up on this, he said, you know, he'll definitely play for the Steelers this year. he just doesn't know when that is.
26:06Joe Johnson:Hey, you know what that mean, huh? Huh? Hey, you're not paying me enough. You want me to get out there?
26:12Shannon Sharpe:Yeah.
26:13Joe Johnson:You want me to get out there? You need to pay me like I play. Pay me for what I've done and what I'm going to do in the foreseeable future if you want me on that field. If not, how about you trade me? Hey. Trade me. Hey, you got to pay like you weigh, man. Hey, these dudes out here, they trying to get their bread, bro. He's worthy of it too, Uncle Ojo. Yeah. But look, I don't think he going to play neither. He blowing all this smoke. Yeah, yeah. You hear me?
26:40Shannon Sharpe:He know he ain't going to even be out there. You know what I mean? Come on, man. He's just making it tough on everybody else. How you going to... That's what I'm saying.
26:55Joe Johnson:What you doing, Ojo? That's where he going to be at. That's how close he going to be? Right here. Hey, he going to be damn near offside. Man, back up. You offside. Hey, his arm's real long, Joe.
27:07Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. Yeah.
27:09Joe Johnson:He's going to stab. He's going to stab. He's going to ride with me. Man, hey, I like Joey Porter Jr. now. I like him now. I love me some DB talk, but the way he talking, you don't want to come back after not playing, right, Joe? You don't want to come back after not playing. In the first game, you face real competition. It's two of the better duos in the league. That's not what you want to do. You need to work your way up. Like, if you're a boxer, you don't jump into the big fight. You got to get you a little tune-up. So, Joey Porter talking like he really want that smoke. How you just going to go straight to the top dogs?
27:46Joe Johnson:Talk about what you going to do. Nah, my boy. Because I'm the top dog.
27:48Shannon Sharpe:I left off. I was the top dog. I ain't feel off. Nah, my boy. Hey, you know that first game, adrenaline getting through that first game, he might have a decent game against y 'all.
27:59Joe Johnson:Decent game against who? Against the Bengals. Are you talking about the same Bengals that put BTA to the Texans? Yeah, I seen that. We talking week to week, though. That's old. Let me tell you something, Joe. We ain't even in our bag yet. You hear me? We not even in our bag yet. Huh? Chase, what, he had 75 this week. He had 12 the first week. We ain't even in our bag yet. Huh? Chase Brown ain't even got active yet. You feel me? Yeah. Joe Burrow not even playing like Joe Burrow yet. But Zach Taylor hasn't even reached in his bag of creativity yet. Like, what you doing? We 2-0 out the gate, something that we haven't done in a very long time.
28:41Joe Johnson:Because we always have to do our thing. You see how he talking, Joe?
28:43Shannon Sharpe:Look at him talking. Huh? Look at him talking. Huh? Yeah, yeah. I'm feeling good, huh? Can you hear me? They went two games and now he feeling good. Huh? Huh? We got to slow him up because we don't, hey, him, you know, he one of them guys that don't handle prosperity well. Who don't? You.
29:06Joe Johnson:I handle it real well. I can't help the success that we're having. I can't help. That is two games. What'd that mean? Hey, it's week to week, ain't it? It's still early, bro. But y 'all look good. Y 'all look good. Thank you, Joe. Thank you, Joe. Y 'all look good, too. The Cowboys look pretty good, too, Joe. Thank you, bro. But I'm still pissed they ain't getting picked the ball. Now, I know y 'all ran down the numbers and the stats and Pick got just as many targets. I don't care. It don't show up on the stat sheet. You fix it or you piss me off. We're going to get him right, Ocho. Don't worry, all right?
29:45We're going to get him right.
29:46Shannon Sharpe:Look, I think the thing is I think we're all in agreeance. Joey Porter Jr. has earned a new contract. And I think the Steelers believe he's earned a new contract. I think where the Steelers and Joey Porter's management or agency, where they differ, him moving to the front of the line. I don't see him pole vaulting. I don't see him pole vaulting McDuffie and those guys. I don't. I don't.
30:19Hey.
30:20Shannon Sharpe:Because a lot of the guys up there, they're all pros. They're Pro Bowl players. Did Porter make the Pro Bowl?
30:29Joe Johnson:See, that's the problem. I don't think he's made a Pro Bowl. I don't think he has an All-Pro. But what I do see is when you turn that film on, I see a very, very, very good corner. Yeah, for sure.
30:44Shannon Sharpe:Absolutely. Very good. Absolutely. But like I said, I mean, you look at Sal's Garden when he reset it. Saltz Gardner was rookie of the year, two-time first-team All-Pro. You look at Sertan. He was defensive player of the year, All-Pro. Regarded as the best corner in football, you look at Stingley, Pro Bowl, All-Pro. You look at Spoon. You look at McDuffie. You look at those guys that move to the front of the line, and you're like, okay, I can see it. So I think Steelers are probably trying to slot him somewhere between 25 and 30, and he's looking to go to 34. Oh. I'm just
31:24Joe Johnson:I understand I hear what you're saying and I don't like the fact that when it comes to playing players obviously based on Pro Bowls you've been to and the first team All-Pros and some of these other accolades that come into question that come into play when it's time to negotiate but for me the eye in the sky doesn't lie and for me to be sitting here dying on that hill for a Steelers player is because I understand what I've been watching from young bull since he's gotten there. And I kind of understand his point based on what I'm seeing and understand the asset and value that you are defensively because there ain't too many that can do what you do.
32:01Joe Johnson:No. Hey, Joey Porter, I want you to line up on the number one. Play man-to-man all day. Play man-to-man all four quarters so I can do other things defensively with the other 10 people. I got him. I know you can take care of that. You can't do that with everybody.
32:18Shannon Sharpe:Let me ask you a question. Because I think the guys that they move to the front of the line, they say, we believe moving forward, these guys will continue to be an all-pro, a pro-bowl player, and potential defensive player of the year. You're right. You're right. When you look at Joey Porter Jr., the rejection is that people are like, I don't believe in back pay. I paid you for what you've done. If I give you a contract now, I'm paying you based on what I believe you will do. Yeah. Yeah. So somebody's like, well, you know, I think we're going to talk about Vladimir Gabriel Jr. talking about he got a$500 million deal.
32:56Shannon Sharpe:And he's talking about they don't pay me to hit 40 home runs a year. They pay me for what I've done. No, hell no. They already paid you for that. In fact, it wasn't like you were playing for free and they got to back pay you. No, they paid for that. So looking at Joey Porter Jr., they're probably looking at, okay, where do we project him to be, Ocho? Say in the next three to four years, where do we project them? Do we project them to be a top, let's just say top four? We expect them to be Stingley, Sertan II, Spoon, because guess what? You got Quinjon Mitchell. You got Cooper DeGene. Got all those guys coming up.
33:43Joe Johnson:That's tough.
33:47Shannon Sharpe:that's tough it is I got a question so y 'all don't think y 'all don't think the Steelers will get a contract done for Porter before this weekend they don't normally they don't teams try to stay away from doing contracts once the season starts once the season starts yeah they try to stay away from that Joe they want you to focus on the game because you know they focus on the game but I'm thinking about that money hey I can focus on the game better if I had my money. Exactly. I did one contract during the season. And had I not had kids, I would have waited. But I had kids. I need a child support.
34:29Shannon Sharpe:Hey, I need that, huh? Hey, Joe, I need that. Hey, I'm paying for my attorney and hers? Yeah. Weesh. Yeah, let me go and get that. I was under value. but hey hey I'll be back to the table soon just let me get this just let me get this pressure off me damn I forgot Christian Gonzalez the last one to sign yeah he said everything hey but I'm saying with Porter being such an intricate piece to the Steelers why wouldn't they want to take care of him though I think they do. The question is the number in which I take care of you. They probably fall off too, Joe. Joe, look, you might want to get the old lady a ride.
35:20Shannon Sharpe:She's like, oh, I ain't got no problem getting a ride. But you got a Honda in mind. She got a Maybach in mind. You see the difference? You ain't got no problem wanting to take care of her. It's just to the extent of taking care of her. You got a nice little two-bedroom condo. You like a nice little two-bedroom brownstone. Yeah, yeah, yeah. She says, Joe, I need like$10 ,000 with a pool in it. Whoa, whoa, whoa. 10 ,000 what? Square feet. Man, please. Hold on. Who going to upkeep that? Oh, hold on. If she get a Maybach, who going to pay the maintenance? But see, that's what I'm saying. She said, I want you to take it.
35:54Shannon Sharpe:The Steelers want to take care of Junior. To what extent taking care of him? They want to take care of him on a Honda level. He looking at Spectra. He looking at Rose. He looking at Phantom. Yes, sir. Maybach. Yes, sir. They looking like, okay, we might can do an S580, but not the Maybach edition. Oh, no. Ooh, that's insulting. That's insulting. So that's the thing. I think the team, I don't think there's any hesitation. I think the team absolutely knows that he's earned a pay raise. How high do we go, Ocho and Joe? I think that's what they're struggling with. Because I don't think, me personally, this is me, this is my personal.
36:38Shannon Sharpe:I don't think they view him as a Christian Gonzalez. I don't think they view him as a Pat Sertan. I don't think they view him as a spook. I don't. Now I could be wrong. They might view him but I don't think they view him as that level.
36:50Joe Johnson:Let me tell you what. If they did view him like the top tier corner in the league he wouldn't be having this issue right now. He'll be playing this week against the Bengals. But I know one thing. You know my homeboy Asante Sammy Jr.
37:06Shannon Sharpe:Yeah.
37:07Joe Johnson:You're going to have to deal with Chase. You're going to have to deal with Tee Higgins. Yeah. I'm not sure who's playing defensive back on the other side of the ball. Damn, I wonder who was playing on the other side. I don't know. You know what? It don't matter. They finna get this work. Huh? Hmm. Who they? Who they? Who they think they're going to beat the Spangles? Now he feeling good.
37:30Shannon Sharpe:Look at him. Yeah, who they?
37:33Joe Johnson:Yeah, Joe.
37:39Shannon Sharpe:Execs around the league are wondering whether the Arizona Cardinals could explore trading Marvin Harrison Jr. ahead of the NFL trade deadline. Harrison, the number four pick in the 2024 draft, but only has one catch thus far this season. Here's Cardinals head coach Mike LaFleur with some interesting comments on getting Marvin more involved in the passing game. a great question um because i i know that's uh it's it's like well just get some easy completions to get going and it's that's fine um you also have trey mcbride who's one of the best underneath guys in the world and there's only about 60 to 65 plays a game and you got to run the ball and you got to you know and you got um kendrick who works underneath pretty well too so everyone's kind of got their role right there um doesn't mean that we won't this week if we that's what's best in terms of you know working him underneath uh but that's not what we thought it was best through the first two weeks.
38:35Damn!
38:37Joe Johnson:I don't I don't like that I don't like that at all especially especially from a player Uncle Joe that went high as Marvin Harrison did but basically what you what you're telling me is is he's not a value he's not an asset um there are other players right now being that Marvin Harrison Jr. isn't playing with much confidence he's mentioning other players that can do the same thing that Marvin Harrison should be in position to do.

40:03Joe Johnson:Being the number four pick, he should be the one, the focal point of those passes, of those plays, especially being in his, what, third year, right? This is the third year. Yeah, this is your make it or break it year. At this point, you should be the focal point of your offense. Matter of fact, as the fourth pick in the draft, you should be better than Trey McBride, even as good as Trey McBride is, based on you going that high. I just I don't like the way coach answers that. Not like at all. And right now, based on what I've seen from Marvin Harrison Jr., his body language is not there. One catch in two games.
40:39Joe Johnson:Man, that makes absolutely no sense. but I kind of get it. Why it is the way it is, he just hasn't looked like himself since in the league. Yeah, he hasn't looked like himself at all, Joe. I don't know what's going on. I don't like how Coach, how LaFleur said that, you know, he put it on McBride. Like, bro, how many possessions he said? Like 60, 70, 65 plays a game. You mean to tell me four, five targets can't go to heck? Man, come on, man. Come on, man. I don't know I don't know how they're getting more involved I don't know if it's the weight gain of Marvin Harrison but I thought he was a hell of a talent coming out of Ohio State to see him at this stage, at this point in his career two games in, he ain't got but one catch come on bro that's crazy if you want to get a play of the ball they can steam you open they can create plays for you just to get you touches I agree.
41:39Joe Johnson:Every team can do that. They just don't want to.
41:43Shannon Sharpe:Look, I— Why wouldn't they want to? I think the thing is, guys, is that he went there and Trey McBride caught fire. All pro season, he's the best tight end in football. So, but damn. And then he's like, okay, yeah, okay, I'll be number two. Boom, Michael Wilson catch fire. Now guess what, Ocho? You third. So you the fourth pick in the draft. you go from going to be, think you're going to be number one. Not only you're not number one, you're not number two. And then this man, Mitch, I think Kendrick, he said Bourne. Kendrick Bourne? He's like, Junior probably said, hold on now. Come on now. Come on now.
42:28Joe Johnson:That's tough, man.
42:29Shannon Sharpe:It is. It is. You know, and Senior was critical of the offense. Like, bro, you know, he doesn't want to say too much because he is Marvin Harrison Sr. And then everything, you'll say, well, and remember, remember, when a family member or a loved one speaks publicly, they automatically assume it came from the player. It came from the little one. Yeah. Yeah. It can, bro, I can't speak for myself. Yeah, you can, but you speaking for him. He done told you something. She done told you something. That's why you have to be mindful what you say publicly because everybody's going to deduce. If I'd have said something publicly, oh, Sterling told him that.
43:13Shannon Sharpe:If he said something publicly, Shannon told him that. So I just – he's in a very, very, very tough situation because like you said, Ocho, he was viewed as a can't-miss prospect. He's the fourth pick in the draft. that guy he was supposed to be Chase he was supposed to be doing with Jetta he's supposed to be doing with those guys now Chase was Jetta went later in the teens Chase was I think the fifth pick in the draft I think he's fifth that's the type of projection that people had for Marvin Harrison Jr. a JSN he's supposed to be like that. Yeah. Especially this year because remember, JSN took off his third year.
44:11Shannon Sharpe:When he had 100 catches, I think his second year. He went haywire the third year. Chase started from day one. Jenna started from day one. But as a fourth overall pick, Ocho, you're supposed to be that boy dog now. That boy. and it doesn't help your junior and everybody know what your dad did
44:35Joe Johnson:yeah and those expectations and having to fill those shoes those are big shoes to fill Joe he's in the Hall of Fame
44:42Shannon Sharpe:he's one of the top 100 players of all in the history of the game yes and to make matters worse maybe if your name was David Harrison ain't nobody know but you Marvin Harrison Jr people remember Marvin Harrison Sr mm-hmm Hey, it ain't too late for them to get on the right track.
45:02Joe Johnson:You got to get the ball, though, first, Joe. Yeah, and if they not throwing in the ball, if they not scheming you open to get you the ball, if you're struggling to be able to get open on your own, knowing they want you to, and when they do throw you the ball, if you're dropping it, yeah, you know the ball stopped coming to you. Yes.
45:17Shannon Sharpe:It's just like a running back, Ocho. If a running back foaming the ball, what they do? They snatch it. Snatch your ass up out of there. Yeah. You remember, even Derek here. They stopped giving him that ball for a while, didn't they, Ocho? Bro, you putting the ball on the ground too much, bro. You hurting us.
45:34Joe Johnson:Hey, he took them sleeves right off. Remember I told you? Oh, yeah. You can't feel the ball. I think maybe for Marvin Harrison Jr., I mean, chat, you can let me know what you think. I think it's time for maybe a change of scenery. Really? Listen, year three is your make it or break it year. Yeah. He's supposed to be, like Unc said, And he's supposed to be the Jamar Chase or the Jettlers. He's supposed to be coming into an enormous deal at the end of this season. And he, I mean, I don't know, man. I think a change of scenery is needed. His body language doesn't look good. He's a quiet kid. He doesn't say much.
46:13Joe Johnson:He doesn't show emotions or anything like that. So it's hard to tell what he's feeling, you know, or how he feels. But his play isn't what it should be. I agree, Ocho. I'm saying you got a destination in mind, Ocho? Or you got a couple teams? Just a change of scenery in general. Yeah. That's the only thing I can think of. Where? I have no idea. I don't know. He a hell of a talent, though. I know the numbers don't really show, you know, especially this year since he's been in the league. But you could be right, Ocho. A change of scenery could put a little spark on him.
46:49Shannon Sharpe:Well, if you ain't going to throw in the ball, what the hell you got him for? You named all these other guys. So you contend with Trey McBride and Michael Wilson? Okay, fine. And, hey, Michael Wilson, Ocho, we talked about this last year. He balled out his damn mind. We know Trey McBride did. So if you're not going to throw him, look, the fourth pick in the draft can't be the third option. That's all I'm saying. I don't know where you can go, Ocho. We can have that discussion at a later date in time, Joe. I just know the fourth pick in the draft can't be your third option. and the way it sounded like he was the first option because he mentioned Kendrick Bourne saying he can do some of the same things that Marvin Harrison Jr.
47:28Shannon Sharpe:can do.
47:29Joe Johnson:Why would you even say that? Thank you very much. Why would you even mention that when the question is about, man, don't get me started. Yeah, get you started.
47:38Shannon Sharpe:Who the hell got this AC on, man? That's all I'm saying, Joe. I mean, you tell me you want me to do this. Well, I can only do that if you give me the rock or put me in position to get plays. Yeah, I know he's struggling. He's lost so many of his confidence because he dropped a few passes, some passes that's difficult catches that you expect him, being who he is, where he was drafted, to make those plays. And he hadn't made those plays yet. And I agree with Ocho. Maybe it's – hey, move him. Let him go somewhere else to get a fresh start. Maybe the stench in there is suffocating. And he just need to go somewhere else, get him a fresh start.
48:18Shannon Sharpe:Where you smell nothing but some pot and lights off. Hey, I don't know what y 'all used to clean. We used to clean our house with Pine Saw, Ochoa Joe. You know what I'm saying? They're like that old Pine Saw.
48:31Joe Johnson:I remember them days. Yeah. Yeah. Hey, but I'm with y 'all. Maybe they should. Maybe they should change. I mean, trade him, change the scenery. Because LaFleur didn't act like he was willing to try to get him going. He didn't say, yeah. Oh, we going to make sure we get him. We going to make sure we get him involved. We going to make sure we. I'm like, damn.
48:49Shannon Sharpe:He mentioned what everybody else could do. He ain't mentioned nothing. So what is he good at? A lot of times the coach's job, his number one job is to lie to you, is to make you think you can do something that you can't.
49:05Joe Johnson:That's a good one.
49:06Shannon Sharpe:That's the whole objective of the coach. A coach got to be able to get something out of you that you don't think you got in you, and he can extract it. Sometimes it takes him lying. Boy, Ocho, I know you're going to like this dude. Man, that dude's going to tear Ocho ass. Boy, I know Ocho. Ocho, you got him on this one now, right? Ocho started like, I don't know. Ocho, we giving you the rock. Hey, we believe. Then Ocho's like, you believe? Oh, yeah, I got him, Coach. I got him. Yeah, yeah, yeah, Coach. That's the one. That's it right there. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Hey, man. Hey, Coach said he come to me on Sunday.
49:43Shannon Sharpe:Coach told me to be ready. I done got Ocho believing in Ocho. Sometimes you have to convince them because it's easy to lose confidence. Everybody want to tell you the story. There have been some self-doubt in certain areas. Some areas you're strong. I never doubted. Let me tell you what I didn't doubt. My ability. Things that I can control. Now, when it came to talking women, I was like, I couldn't control whether she liked me or not. So it made me apprehensive because I didn't want to hear rejection. I didn't want to say, no, you can't have my number. No, I don't want to go out. No, I don't want to see you.
50:20Shannon Sharpe:I couldn't control that. But on the football field, you lying to me.
50:28Joe Johnson:I tell you, hey, I had an answer for both of those. I had an answer for that on the field, and I had an answer for dealing with rejection. I don't control. Yes, sir. Damn. Never been rejected, boy. I'm 100 for 100.
50:42Shannon Sharpe:Damn. Yeah, and I think the thing is that, you know, you could feel a certain way. And I was telling somebody today, I was always, I think maybe because the way I was brought up and I didn't really have a whole lot is that, you know, my grandmother and my grandparents, they're raised is that, boy, you're not better than anybody. But this is what I always tell people. I don't think I'm better than anybody because of who I am and what I've done and what I got. I think I can do what I do better than anybody else can do what they do best. whatever you think you can do, I can do what I do better than what you can do.
51:14Shannon Sharpe:That's how I think. That's how I've always thought. No, I'm not better than you because I'm Shannon Sharp, but because I'm Pro Bowl and rings and Hall of Fame and we got top podcasts. No, that doesn't make me better than you. I just think that I can do what I do better than what you can do. Hello. That's it. so when it came to something that I could control which was how hard I play how hard I focus how disciplined I was I never doubted that for a second people are like man you ain't never doubted I mean you were in Savannah State what they got to do with anything I don't know if y 'all noticed they got planes that leave from Savannah that'll take you anywhere in the damn world so just because I wasn't in Atlanta or went to a big school guess what Them scouts, they put a lot of miles on rental cars, Ocho, going to all different types of places, don't they?
52:13Hey, hey, hey. You can be over there playing under that damn bridge over there. They going to come find you. If you good. They going to come find you. Coming to find you. They going to find you. I don't care where you at.
52:24Shannon Sharpe:So I just think the thing is, maybe you're right. Ocho, maybe you're right. Maybe it's just time for him to get a fresh start somewhere else.
52:34Shannon Sharpe:because I needed a coach to say, you know what? We need to do a better job of getting in the ball. I know he's working his tail off. I know he wants to help. I know he wants to contribute to help this team win. And this is why we selected with the fourth overall pick. But you're telling us what everybody else can do. Ain't nobody ask you about Trey McBride. We know what Trey McBride is. He's the best tight end of football. He was an all-pro, had 120-something catches. The most catches by a title in NFL history. We didn't ask you about him. Ain't nobody ask you about Mike Wilson. Ain't nobody ask you about Kendrick Bourne.
53:10Shannon Sharpe:I think it's Kendrick Bourne that he referenced. I could be wrong, so Chad, if I'm wrong, I apologize. Okay. We ask you about Marvin Harrison Jr., and you gave us a whole different. It's like somebody ask you about your lady, and you talk about, boy, Halle Berry got some pretty skin, don't you? B, ain't nobody ask you about Halle Berry. They ask you about your old lady. And you tell us what you like about somebody else. Right. I got a trick for you. Hey, listen. I bet you some teams who definitely want to use them, though. Who can use them. There's some teams who could definitely use them, Ocho.

57:24Shannon Sharpe:Joe Burrow said he loves playing on the road almost as much as he loves playing at home. Let's take a listen to what Joe B had to say. The older Rivals hostile environment. I've always loved playing on the road. I've always enjoyed that almost more than playing at home. Just like you can feed off of your home crowd's energy, you can feed off of an away crowd's energy too, positively and negatively. There's no better feeling than scoring a big touchdown on the road and getting really quiet, but you can still hear a couple of the Bengals fans in the stands. So hopefully we have a couple of those.

59:05Joe Johnson:It don't matter. We'll be playing that. Huh? Home or away. And the funny thing about it is I kind of dig what Joe was saying, but it's crazy to hear that from a quarterback, especially with all the noise that goes on in away games in hostile environments. As a receiver, I enjoy the hostile environment, Joe, simply because I feed off that energy, and I like doing the trash talking not only to the players but to the fans as well when I'm on the bench. Yeah. I enjoy that. I enjoy turning around, you know, going back and forth. And don't let me be playing well. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Hey, hey.
59:40Joe Johnson:Hey, I'll score Joe, and I'll keep the ball, and I'll hand it to one of they fans. You know, I'll sign it and hand it. Man, Joe, I used to be having a good time out there, boy. Yeah, yeah. Ain't nothing like shutting up the opposing fans in their own house. I'm talking about the whole stadium rocking. and I'm talking about they're over 20, 25, 30 ,000. I'm talking about they going crazy, Ochoa. When you shut them up, when they can't say nothing,
1:00:08Shannon Sharpe:there's no better feeling. Ochoa, you have a good game. I ain't got to have no good game. My team just need to win. Damn a good game. I ain't got to do nothing. But don't let me. I'm really going to. Oh, I told people all the time. If you couldn't know. What? I'm a sore loser, but I'm a worse winner. You don't want me to win. I'm the last mofo you want to win. Right. Look at some of the sound, but I was telling them, if you leave now, you'll get a head start on traffic. This went over. I don't want anybody to get caught in a traffic jam. I don't know what you're waiting here for. Y 'all want to see us celebrate?
1:00:48Shannon Sharpe:Oh, man, please. Ain't nothing like that, boy. Y 'all already know one of the most viral clips, I called a president. That was in New England. Yeah. Yeah, I called the president. Hey, we need the National Guard. We killing these folks. We need as many, many as you can spare. I promise you. Oh, man. Don't let, like I said, I'm a very, very sore loser. I'm an absolute worst winner. Hey, hey, hey. And it's really bad when the fans are really heckling you. Yeah. And I'm talking about you mess around and go off. Yeah. Hey, Joe. Ain't nothing like.
1:01:26Joe Johnson:You ever had an opportunity to play in front of Spike Lee? Spike used to ever talk trash to you? He may have said something, but it wasn't necessarily trash. You know, when you play in the garden, Ocho, he's going to be at every game. You know what I mean? It's going to be star-studded in there. That's probably one of my favorite places to play, honestly. Just from the ambiance, the atmosphere, the fanatics of fans, you know, when they show up, it don't matter. Knicks ain't even got to be good, Ocho. Are they going to be in there regardless? Man, what is you talking about? Them folks showing up.
1:01:57Joe Johnson:Yeah, I'm thinking about Spike, the way Spike be going at it, the way he went at it with Reggie Miller. Oh, yeah. I would love that. Iconic moment.
1:02:05Shannon Sharpe:He went at it with Kobe, too? Yeah. Kobe told him, say, you caused this. With Kobe, I feel like, you caused this. You just thought that and shut up. Yeah. But y 'all know when them boys go play in Madison Square Garden, I'm talking about the Colbys, the Jordans, the LeBrons. They trying to put on the show. I don't care how you cut or slice. I'm talking about every time they go in there, they trying to put on a show. So for the fact that the Sixers and the Knicks play game one, man, they're going to be trying to make a statement. That's an iconic building. Yes, sir. Because even though, you know, you talk about the garden, that's a different garden.
1:02:42Shannon Sharpe:That ain't the same as Boston. Madison Square Garden is the same Madison Square Garden that they played in the 1970s, the 1980s. You see, they don't play at the farm anymore. They're at Staples, and now it's called a crib. So a lot of these buildings, you know, Chicago, they got a new state. They got a new arena. The garden is the garden. That's what makes Lambeau feel. That's what makes Soldier feel. That's what makes them so special. Those are the same places they've been playing in for damn near 100 years. Oh. Everybody else has got new stadiums, Ocho. Yeah. So, look, we were talking about the Raiders of Oakland.
1:03:23Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, it's the Raiders. Las Vegas Raiders. Ain't nothing like the Coliseum. Man, please. It was nothing like that? Nothing. Nothing. Them fans are really crazy. I mean, Joe. Those fans are lunatic.
1:03:41Joe Johnson:That black hole? Something wrong with them four, boy.
1:03:45Shannon Sharpe:Old town, let me tell you about my city. Old town. Boy, they go crazy. man they go crazy in there but I would joke there's nothing like shutting up the opposing crowd there's no better feeling and I've been fortunate enough you know go to the Super Ocho we beat Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh we beat Oakland in Oakland man and to have it wasn't nobody in there but Bronco fans wasn't no one there but Ravens fans the all the silver and black gone no come back hey hey where y 'all going Y 'all supposed to watch us celebrate. Oh, you thought y 'all was going to celebrate? Come on back here and see. Hey. Oh, man.
1:04:33Shannon Sharpe:I'm going crazy. I'm going crazy. Because now all that talking. Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Hey, Big Mouth. You. No, no, no, no, no. Shut up. Yeah, yeah. You. Yeah. I thought. You thought y 'all was. How that sound? How that look? Yeah. Man, the Steelers was so hurt. Because, Ocho, I don't know if you really played. Did you play in the old Three Rivers? No. You played in Heinz Field, huh? The old Three Rivers, Ocho. Eight. The stadium, the seats did this. They bounced. Damn. Yes. For real? Ah, Ocho. And all the, you see, so just imagine, the terrible tie was originated in Three Rivers. I think the guy was Myron Cope.
1:05:22Shannon Sharpe:man, they were waving them towers, that stadium bouncing. I said, oh, we done got ourselves into now. And now, we done got the lead. We bilking the clock. Everybody threw them terrible towers on the ground. Pick them terrible towers up, wipe your nose, and get your ass up out of here. Ain't no better feeling, Joey B. You right about that one. It's just something about shutting an opposing crowd up. It is. It feels so good, too. Especially when you get a dub. I'm sorry, guys. I'm sorry about... Oh, it's not Heinz Field anymore. It's Accenture. I'm sorry. It was Heinz Field when I played the Steelers there.
1:06:11Shannon Sharpe:I was just making reference to the old... What is it now? Accenture. I think they said Accenture. Acquashure? Okay, Acquashure. Okay, that's different. Get buried.
1:06:26Shannon Sharpe:I'm just trying to figure out, with all the protections, the NFL has afforded that one position. It's similar to the quarterbacks get hurt more now than they did when they didn't protect them, Ocho and Joe. That's because they protect them too damn much. They can't even play in the preseason. So the first time I've been saying this, I don't know how long I've been saying this, But the first time you put that car on the freeway during the regular season, hey, man, it's going to have some kinks in it. You're going to have to take it to the shop a couple times, get it fixed, then put it back out there.
1:07:01That's pretty much what's happening, man. You know, these boys got to play, man. They got to play.
1:07:06Joe Johnson:I hate it. I hate it. I hate it. I hate it. I hate it. I don't understand how, you know, every time somebody get hit, I mean, even though Jackson darts on, it was unfortunate. he was up in the air and you know that high low it was a high low it was a high low I don't know man I just every week we in week two every week you know I wish Ash could tell me how many people are hurt since week one has started we only in week two they haven't even made it halfway through the season yet man golly Ocho and think about it we talk about key guys Ocho
1:07:44Shannon Sharpe:we ain't just talking about the guy that's not going to make the headlines. We're talking about quarterbacks. We're talking about starters, be it wide receiver, be it O-line, D-line, something like that. We're not talking about the guys that are backup that's being lost. And both times that my MCL, I had kind of got my – once I had got a dude caught me from the side in the Super Bowl and sprained my MCL. And the other one, I got slung down. I caught a touchdown, got slung down, and my cleat scraped like you hit a golf swing. Yeah. Got me. And me? And me. Got me just like that. It's the freakiest stuff.
1:08:28Shannon Sharpe:I mean, some of the stuff I look back and I watch film, I was like, oh, yeah, I probably should have tore my knee on that one. And then the least little stuff got me. That's crazy. Hey, you got lucky, Ocho. Yeah, you got very, very lucky.
1:08:44Joe Johnson:No, no, no. You have to understand. Man, it really wasn't luck, too, Uncle Joe. You have to think about it, right? Even though I was smaller frame, I still played the game very reckless. I played reckless, Joe. So I didn't really care about injuries, and I would die on this hill. And I think it's because I was able to – I call it billing a callus. I calcified my body to an extent, and I practiced, and I practiced, and I ran, and I ran. I did scout team. I'm dying. I did special team just to keep myself going. So once the season came, man, I was able to withstand everything. And, man, hey, Joe, them boys told my you-know-what-up, boy.
1:09:23Joe Johnson:I'm talking about heads getting, I mean, helmet flying off, all type of stuff. And I get up talking trash. Just never got hurt. I don't know why.
1:09:33Shannon Sharpe:It's different. Like I said, I think now it's hard for me to gauge, like, when I first came in in the early 90s because we didn't have the access. and unless it was like a major. I mean, people didn't talk about their backups or the third team of guys getting injured. Now they report everything. So I don't know if there's more or less or we have more access, more visibility, 24-hour coverage. We're able to see it. You can see every game. Before, if the game wasn't on in your area, you ain't see it. It wasn't on Channel. You could be like, well, I'm going to watch this. you better go to a sports bar.
1:10:12Shannon Sharpe:You damn sure we're going to be able to see it at your house. So with that being said, I don't know if it's more or less. I think there are some injuries that there are more of. I think there's more Achilles injuries now, Ocho, than when you and I played. Or maybe they're just getting reported more. But it's just hard for me to believe that it's not more. Because I'm like, damn, I remember a handful of guys, but there weren't a whole bunch of guys tearing Achilles like they do now.
1:10:37Joe Johnson:No, I think statistically it's much more. Many more players, even though the game, they're trying to protect players even more than they did in the past. I think the injuries have skyrocketed as opposed to even though they've implemented stuff and handicapped most defensive players from playing with free will as they did during our era, your era and my era, just people are getting hurt even more. And most of the time it's non-contact injuries. I don't know. Which I think it is. I think it's more of the training regimens that some of these guys, the lack of training. Like, I just don't know, because you got to think, in basketball, we probably had over the last, what, three, four years, we've had the most Achilles tears probably ever.
1:11:21Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. Joe, the only guy that I can remember tearing his Achilles is Dominique. I'm talking about Big Star. You remember Dominique? Yeah, yeah, yeah. That was really the only guy that I heard of that tore his Achilles. Now, I know that maybe some lesser guys tore him, but the way we see now Tyrese Halliburton, And then we see a JT. Dang. Yeah. And everybody like boom, boom, boom, boom. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. So I don't know, man. I don't know what it is. I don't know if it's too much of a workload. Is it not enough? You know, versus.
1:11:51Joe Johnson:Honestly, I don't think it's enough, Joe. Yeah. I don't think it's enough. Hey, them two-a-days back then, you know, you're taking your body through a ringer. You're taking your body through a ringer. So by the time it gets to football season, by the time it gets to preseason, boy, you already primed and ready to go, boy.
1:12:09Shannon Sharpe:You primed and ready to go. Yeah, I think it's a combination. I think guys, Joe, me personally, I don't think guys give their bodies enough to test the work because you see guys as soon as the season over with Ocho and Joe the next week, they out there. Like, bro, you just went through the rigors of an NFL season or an NBA season. Give your body a month. Give your body six weeks because guess what? But if you go to training camp in July and you can't get your ass in shape from March, April, May, June, I just think they need to give their body a rest. And then once you hit it, you're able – because what I'm trying to do is I'm trying to have my body that when I get to camp, I'm good.
1:12:53Shannon Sharpe:I'm good. I ain't trying to peak no more. I ain't trying to do anything. I'm just trying to get to camp, and I'm going to hold it going to the season. knowing that the healthiest I'm ever going to be is the first day I showed up to camp. Bingo. That's the healthiest I'm going to be, Joe. I'm never going to be that healthy again. Man, I feel great. I don't give a damn how great you feel. Your body knows. Yeah, you're going to always have those little knickknacks throughout the season. You know what I mean? You may get up one morning, damn, my knee biting today. Why am I knee biting? Damn, my ankle.
1:13:25Why that right ankle sore today? It's biting. You know what I mean? So every day, it's kind of like having a sports car, bro. You got to look under the hood. You got to check everything. You got to make sure everything ain't running right because that's how it is. Because once you get out there, you get on the field or the court, you want that thing running smooth, man.
1:13:44Shannon Sharpe:Man, my ankles, I don't know about you, Ocho, but in camp, man. Yeah. My ankles being mad. Boy, I was walking like I was 72 when I was 22 going to the bathroom, man. My ankles hurt. Man, I'm training better than two a days. ain't no choice, Joe. Man, I'm like, damn. Sometimes I was like, man. It used to be a killer. I look at my clock because I used to have an alarm clock on the bed. I'm like, man, I'm going to wait three hours. I ain't getting up. I'm hurting too bad. Hey. You got to think, that two days would pass too, huh? Yeah, for sure. Yeah, they don't know anything about that. They don't understand about those practices back then and the length of those practices because a lot of coaches were old school.
1:14:24Shannon Sharpe:You didn't get these young coaches like you get now. Not when I came along. Now you're getting guys 32, 33, 35. Them coaches that I got, they came from the 60s. They either played in the 60s or they were on the staff of somebody that played in the 60s, an old school guard, the Coach Landry, the Lombardis, the Bud Grants. Man, there ain't no number one way. That was it. They getting butter from a dog. Hello. Hey, hey, he ain't lying. Hey, man, we used to do two a day. I'm talking about hard to a day. See, these dudes, they barely practice now. Here's the problem. They barely practice. They come in, they get up some shots, and then they go home.
1:15:07And then they jump. Then when game time coming, that popcorn started popping upstairs. Yeah. Then that popcorn started popping. You put that thing on the freeway. Now you trying to take it 200 when you ain't been going with 100. Yeah. That will happen.
1:15:20Shannon Sharpe:That will happen, Ocho. I'm telling you, man. I know that will be what will happen. Of course. Because in the winter, what you do? You go out there. Joe, when we were growing up, what'd you do? It was cold, you go create the car and come back in the house. You let it warm up. You ain't get in the car and you ain't going to drive it? You let that thing warm up a little bit. Yeah, I'm going to let it warm up by five minutes. And then you get on out there and, hey, you put your defrost on and everything to throw the wind up. Now you ready to go. You ain't just go up there and just take off. Hey, wait.
1:15:56Joe Johnson:I remember them days. Once it got to December, what you drove in December in Denver?
1:16:02Shannon Sharpe:I had an SUV. When I first got to Denver, I don't even want to tell y 'all one of the first cars I had had a station wagon. And when you first got to Denver? When I first got to Denver, because I didn't have nothing, and the dude let me borrow the station wagon for about a month. Man, hey, I pull up, Hey, man, ain't no chicks trying to holler at you, boy. I pull up and see the chicks on the road. Hey, how you doing? Man, they ain't talking to nobody in the wood pedaling station wagon. But then I got a four-door blazer, and then in 96, I did a cover shoot for a magazine, and the guy asked me what I wanted for payment.
1:16:41Shannon Sharpe:I just threw something out there. I said, man, I really want this 4.6 Range Rover. He said, go down to the dealership and pick it out. Damn. What? Yep.
1:16:52Joe Johnson:I just when it got cold Joe like in the November, December I had me a little Dodge Ram Oh you had a pickup truck? Yeah I had a little pickup truck just because I didn't want to get stuck I'm not getting stuck in that snow Oh no That ain't happening Oh no I was living in Utah It was probably one of the worst I lived in Park City too
1:17:16Shannon Sharpe:You ain't getting up by some snow Joe Boy, I had that Jeep Wrangler with them big wheels on there, with them big tires on that joint, going up and down that mountain. Yeah. I would Gucci. I'm talking about snow was so tall. Snow was so tall, you couldn't even see the mailbox no more. Damn. Damn. You know what I mean? So, look, look. How you got out of the driveway? Hold on, hold on. What I didn't know, Ocho, if you don't clear the mailbox here, they don't deliver your mail. So, you couldn't even see.
1:17:49You couldn't even see the mailbox. So dude came through one day. I'm like, damn, man, why we ain't getting no mail? He was like, man, you got to clear the mailbox. I'm talking about you couldn't even see it.
1:17:59Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, there were the days I was like, man, I'm glad. I live in an apartment complex, and they came along, and they were like the driveway. But that was it. That was it. And so I don't know what the Giants are going to do. I don't know what the NFL – they can't protect the quarterbacks anymore. They've hampered the defenses so much. You've got mid-guys, and people think these mid-guys are better than Marino, are better than Elway, better than Young, and better than some of these guys. But it's different. Just imagine if they would allow you to attack the quarterback today like they once did. Hello.
1:18:45Shannon Sharpe:Like back then?
1:18:47Joe Johnson:Man, everybody be suspended. I know. Everybody be suspended. When you're teeing off and your clients are watching, it's on.
