In short
This episode is a “Best of NFL News Part 1” segment focused on player rankings and league business, plus some team outlook talk. Topic 1: the 2026 NFL Top 100 list voted by players, where Myles Garrett is ranked No. 1. The hosts debate whether the list is accurate and argue Garrett’s 23-sack season (including constant double-teams while Cleveland often trailed) makes him deserving. Notable top-10 names discussed: Josh Allen (No. 2), Bijan Robinson (No. 3), Matthew Stafford (No. 4), Jaxon Smith-Njigba (No. 5), Christian McCaffrey (No. 6), Puka Nacua (No. 7), Micah Parsons (No. 8), Jameer Gibbs (No. 9), Pat Surtain II (No. 10). Topic 2: Roger Goodell signing a four-year extension; his last reported pay was about $64M/year. The hosts say he’s often booed but must “protect the shield” and enforce suspensions. Topic 3: contract/quarterback discussion includes CJ Stroud not signing an extension (contrasted with Goodell’s).
Guest backgrounds
no named guests appear; the episode is hosted by “Uncle Joe” and “Ocho” (former NFL players). Notable examples/claims: Rams having three top-7 players; players voting can be biased; Garrett’s motivation may rise with championship expectations in Los Angeles.

2:23Shannon Sharpe:That button right here. Come for the sports. Stay for the story.
2:32Shannon Sharpe:Aaron Rodgers was asking about an interception he had at practice. You'll never believe his response. Listen to this. Through that, and obviously I've talked to him a lot with advice and stuff. So I'm just going to feel it. Yeah, Roman made a repeat mistake. You know, that's a good learning, because I don't think he's going to do that again. But he did the same thing early in training camp, And we said, hey, on that under route, you got to keep coming. So I think it's the best that it happened in practice. Roman is a great kid. He's had a fantastic camp. I have utmost confidence in him. He's going to have to play a big role for us.
3:07But mistakes are going to happen. That's a great one to happen in practice. But he's gotten a lot better, and I'm really proud of Roman.
3:16Joe Johnson:I like that. I like that. I like it. If you're going to make mistakes, get him out of the system now. Because listen, you're making him here and you're making him in the game, I ain't throwing you the ball. The key word he said, he's gotten better and I got trust in him. That's the two things you need from your quarterback, especially a Super Bowl winning quarterback who's on his last year, who's going to need everybody to be on point and do everything the right way. Because if you're going to trust him, you ain't getting the ball.
3:42Shannon Sharpe:Me personally, I would have preferred him to pull him aside and say this is the second time you've made that mistake. That's what I would have preferred. Second of all, Ochoa, damn it. How many times on the under route and the slant route you can't stop? I'm throwing it on anticipation. If you throw the ball, I'm going to hit the DB in the effing chest.
4:13Shannon Sharpe:It's not that complicated, man. Damn.
4:20Shannon Sharpe:That's route running run-on-one. You can't stop on a route, especially if it's a route where you got to cross the guy's face because he's throwing it, you're going to cross his face. If you pull up and try to reverse back out, I've let the ball go. I'm going to hit the DB in the chest. It's going to be a pick six. Every time. Damn it, son.
4:45Shannon Sharpe:How many?
4:49Shannon Sharpe:practice a Mike get a get his ass out of there
4:57Shannon Sharpe:yeah I mean you got you got I got to send you a message bro he said he did this one time before earlier in camp now here we are now and you make the same mistake you cannot give up on the under route there is you can't reverse on the under you can't reverse on a slant I'm throwing it my back foot hit I'm letting the ball go yeah the season starts it's not like I got the ball on the string I can throw it pull it back and throw it again come on bro hey
5:35Shannon Sharpe:y 'all talking about I wish I might man my blood pressure man please
5:45Joe Johnson:Hey, I'm just thinking about that under route, man. Man of zone. Zone, sit your ass in that hole. Man, boy, keep your ass going. Keep going.
5:59Joe Johnson:Hey, boy. Oh, man. You know what I'm saying, Joe?
6:04Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. Here we are making the same mistake. You know you got general rule of thumb. If it's a route where you have to cross the guy's face, you've got to cross his face. As a defender, you never let an offensive player cross your face. That's a no-no. As an offensive player, you always cross the guy's face. It's a match of wills. I'm not supposed to let you. I'm supposed to get across. It's really that simple. The guy's going to pick it. If you start the under or you start the slant, if that guy can catch, he's going to pick that ball and he's going to the house. And everybody's going to be looking at Aaron Rodgers like, why'd you throw it?
6:50Shannon Sharpe:No, I threw it because he was supposed to cross the guy's damn face. That's why I threw it. And we practice this every single day. And that's the general rule of thumb. You cross the guy's face. Those are two routes you absolutely have to cross the guy's face.
7:05Joe Johnson:And you know what's going to happen in the game? What's that? That exact same scenario. It's going to happen in the game. Because if they're doing it in practice, you're going to get that look in the game too. He's going to be ready though. He's going to be ready in the game. I hope so. Because the season's starting a week, and you're still making that mistake a week out before the season starts.
7:23Shannon Sharpe:Man, when your quarterback come out and put you on front street like that, that's embedded in your head, Ocho. Yeah. Yeah. I wish Aaron would have pulled him to the side, not shared that to the media. Hey, hold on. He probably did that in practice as soon as that happened. Yeah, do it again.
7:43Shannon Sharpe:that's where you put your arm you put your arm around the shoulder I believe in you I believe in you we're going to be counting on you to make plays
7:53Joe Johnson:I'm listening to those key words that Aaron Rodgers said too he's gotten much better I'm proud of him and I trust him but when a quarterback don't have trust to throw you that ball because he's not sure if you're going to be in the right place or not especially somebody like Aaron Rodgers, who's probably the best of the ball in general, man, you got to be on point.
8:17Shannon Sharpe:Oh, yeah. I'm like, bro, nothing makes a quarterback more upset. Is that something that we've already discussed, a mistake that we're supposed to have to clear it up, and you go make that mistake again? Now, something is not connecting. Either the way we teach it, or the way you perceive it. Something. What is getting lost in translation? I think that was the name of a movie, Lost in Translation.
8:49Joe Johnson:Yeah, that was a good movie.
8:52Shannon Sharpe:Because that's the relationship aspect. You in a relationship, Ocho? Y 'all got to speak the same language. She can't speak Spanish and you speak in Mandarin Chinese. Either you learn Spanish or she learn Mandarin so you guys can communicate. Well, bro, I thought we had this Son, we just went over this And guess what? You effed it up then Yes, sir And I asked you, I said, what didn't you understand About the under or the slant that you gotta keep running That you gotta cross the guy's face What is it that you're missing? Is there something, is the translation Is what I'm saying is not computing What is it, son?
9:37Shannon Sharpe:Aaron probably over there like
9:45Shannon Sharpe:Oh lord I can't do it Ocho I can't do it Listen
9:53Joe Johnson:It might be different coming from you The way you coach it Your delivery They probably won't make any mistakes Because they get it right the first time the way you coach. They ain't going to get it right. They ain't going to get it right.
10:07Shannon Sharpe:He got a point. He got a point, Arcus. Who it's coming from. It's who it's coming from. If they ain't get it right with Aaron Rodgers, they damn sure ain't going to get it right for me. Yeah, the message may be a little different from you. It is, because the first time you F it up.
10:22Shannon Sharpe:The next thing you're going to catch is a plane up out of here.
10:29Joe Johnson:Hey, you know, if anything, you need to go coach Savannah State. There you go. oh man I'm just saying what would they do to FAMU who
10:42Shannon Sharpe:South Carolina State
10:44Joe Johnson:hold on you really think we finna lose that game
10:46Shannon Sharpe:y 'all gonna lose the game I ain't saying y 'all gonna lose lose it like that but y 'all gonna lose yeah never that nah these kids don't like old school coaching they don't like that too much Too much. And I'm already a yellow by nature. I can't keep going over. Ocho, what we do, Ocho? How many times we practice these plays? We practice them Monday. We practice them Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. Thursday, Friday. Okay. And walk through Saturday. And we walk through Saturday. So we get to the end of that night, we go over, Joe, the first 15. The first 15 plays that we're going to run in the game, we done practice them Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, walk through them on Saturday.
11:30Shannon Sharpe:me. Get down Saturday night. Okay, these are the plays that we run. These are the first 15 plays that we're going to run. I've been damned.
11:44Shannon Sharpe:If somebody don't believe it, and you think I'm going to be okay with that? If we done gone over it four times? We walked through the first 15 Saturday morning. We discussed the first 15. Now, mind you, Joe, we installed here's the first 15 plays that we're going to have Saturday night. Guess what? We're going to walk through them. Then we discuss them again Saturday night.
12:10Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, son. I'm outlastin' because I feel you're trying to get me fired. But I'm outlastin'. I'm going to tell you like Coach told one of my players, he said, son, he was supposed to be on PAT block. First of all, he told him to go in there and watch the boot. They've been practicing all week. What did he do? Knife down. Quarterback boot outside. 15 yards. Run out of bounds. Next play, they score a touchdown. He called him out the game. He's supposed to be in there on PAT. Ended up having to call timeout. He got there on Monday. He said, I don't know what's going to happen, but I did recommend we cut you.
13:01Shannon Sharpe:that's that's the kind of coach that I'm used to that's how he grew up and them coaches they keep telling you them coaches they keep telling you stuff over and over and over and over
13:11Joe Johnson:we got one time maybe two depending on how good you were

13:15Shannon Sharpe:hey and guess what they knew you couldn't go no damn well neither you had to stay put I don't care where you was at yeah they knew that different day fellas It absolutely is. It absolutely is. I was like, I just don't get it. Like I said, I get Aaron's frustration. I just wish he'd have kept that inside, pulled a young man to the side. He says, hey, that's twice.
13:41Joe Johnson:But that's been him, man. It is. You're right. He's done this before.
13:46Shannon Sharpe:That's been one of my gripes is that when players make mistakes on Joe, we don't put them out on front. Yeah. Now, don't think I ain't going to tell the media, but we get behind closed doors, I'm going to let you have it. Because we went over that, son. We went over it on Wednesday. You said you had it. We went over it on Thursday. And you did it. You did it. But a lot of times what happens is that as long as the DB don't try to make a play on the ball, he's going to keep coming. As soon as the DB try to make a play on the ball, You all of a sudden, you think you're going to reverse pivoting. Even if we get a collision and the ball hit the dirt, you've done your job.
14:33Shannon Sharpe:You just can't not cross his face and let the ball get picked, son. That's it. Sometimes it's not about you catching the ball. You didn't explain that to him. Sometimes it's not about you catching it. It's making sure that mofo don't catch it. Don't catch it. Whatever you're chasing, flex your next with new On Plus 12-milligram nicotine pouches. I'm on the plane, honey. Something's wrong. It's about what happened in the aftermath of the 9-11 attacks on the World Trade Center in New York.
16:32We're looking at the opportunity of a lifetime for us and the other families. While the world was mourning, five powerful New York families saw an opportunity. The debris is supposed to go to the city-owned salvage yard, and some of it will. They would go on to make millions of dollars. What's in the tunnels? Gold bars, silver ingots. It could be worth half a billion. And they would have made more if it hadn't been for one courageous cop. No, Dad, don't. You're going to need all of us. I'll call you when I can. Frank, be careful. Underground Zero, starring Steve Schirippa, Ray Abruzzo, and me, Michael Imperioli.

17:54Middle school is a different world than the one we grew up in. I'm Dr. Joy, and this is Therapy for Black Girls. We spent real time on it in our surviving middle school run, bringing in a child psychologist and a psychiatrist who's raising two Black girls of his own to talk about what's really going on with our kids right now.
18:11Joe Johnson:So it's literally physiological and neurological and psychological chaos happening all at the same time. We got into group chats and gaming, friendships and bullying, and how to tell the difference between healthy monitoring and the kind of surveillance that erodes trust. There's belonging. You could think of belonging as I can be myself and I can still be accepted. And then there's fitting in. Fitting in says I have to change who I am in order to avoid rejection. Then we turn the conversation toward the fathers, sitting down with therapist Kira Gaines on Black fatherhood and what it means to raise a daughter through this stage.
18:46Shannon Sharpe:You don't have on shorts, so you can't do flips. You have on the dress, so you have to cross your legs. That's the range of this run, from screen time to identity to the fathers doing the work at home. You have to get off your device. But the reality is there's a lot of life out there that we don't want you as your adult in your life to miss out on. This has been our Surviving Middle School Run. Brought to you by the people who spend their careers thinking about exactly this. I'm Dr. Joy. Listen to Therapy for Black Girls on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
19:22Shannon Sharpe:Miles Garrett is ranked number one in the 2026 top NFL ranking 100 rankings. Garrett set a single season sack record with a 23 sack total, won his second AP defensive player of the year. Prior to this, the last defensive player to claim the number one spot in the top 100 was his teammate Aaron Donald in 2019. The top 10 goes as follows. Josh Allen was number two. Bijan Robinson was number three. Matthew Stafford, number four. Jackson, Smith, and Jigba, number five. Christian McCaffrey, number six. Puka Nakua, number seven. Micah Parsons, number eight. Jameer Gibbs, number nine. And Pat Sertan II is number 10.
20:02Shannon Sharpe:Joe, Ocho, did they get this right? Hold on. This is the top 100 football players of the 2026 season? This is the top 100 players in the 2025, but the ranking comes out in 2026. So basically, these are the top 100 players in the NFL currently. As we speak, these are the top 100 as voted on by the players.
20:24Joe Johnson:I mean, based on what's up there, you really can't go wrong, honestly. You can make your argument. You know, there might be some players that belong in the top 10 that might not be on there that had okay seasons last year. But I can't argue with this, Uncle Joe. You would have to – I mean, you really can't. So I think some people probably nitpick in the order that they have them in. I mean, just everybody's worthy of being exactly where they are. Some might say some people are too high. Some people may say some people are too low. And those that do say that, there will probably be fans, you know, or fans of that specific team or player.
21:04Shannon Sharpe:The Rams, think about it. The Rams have three of the top. Rams have three of the top seven. That's crazy. the Rams got three of the top seven players in the NFL and then they brought Aaron Donald back see the people got it messed up see oh there's no player quarterbacks they're not they say best player not most valuable value and best are two different things we understand the quarterback touches the ball every play his value is unsurpassed but just because his value is unsurpassed, that doesn't mean he's the best. I don't have a problem with Miles Garrett. Think about it. On a losing team, they're behind.
21:49Shannon Sharpe:This man got 23 sacks. Now, if he was on the Rams, if he was on Seattle, he was on one of these teams that score a lot, and their offense is forcing the opposing team in a lot of passing situations because they're behind, you might have me. But when you win four, five, six games and you're behind 85, 90 percent of the time and you still can jump off the rock and get 23 sacks. What? Crazy.
22:22Joe Johnson:Crazy. Come on now. I would love to sit in the room and hear football debate this list, especially the top 10. and, boy, they will dissect everything, you know, to have their player in the top five or top three. Or they will say some of them belong. I know Eagles fans will say Jalen Hurts belongs in there because he's a winner. They'll say there's no reason Josh Allen should be that high. I mean, just –
22:49Shannon Sharpe:Josh Allen is the only man that got that many passing touchdowns and rushing touchdowns. This man going to rush for 100 touchdowns and probably throw for 300 touchdowns. He's going to do something that probably nobody else – I mean, I didn't see this out of Josh Allen. I thought he was good. He's 6 '5 1⁄2", 250 pounds, can run, got a laser for an arm, which you need up in Buffalo. I think they're indoors now, Ocho, so his arm strength is not going to be needed as much, but still, New England is open. Jets is open. Miami is, you know, you might get some rain, but you're not going to get no hellacious weather other than rain.
23:24Shannon Sharpe:But I don't have a problem with the list. I think the list is, look, Ocho, I don't know how y 'all do it, Joe, but Ocho and I can tell you. When it comes to voting, everybody doesn't vote. Everybody, because you're asking people to vote, man, they trying to get out of there. They've been over there all day. They've been over there all day. Man, I got to get home. I got stuff I got to do. I got to do something for the wife. I got my mom. I got my dad. I got brother, sister. I got somebody coming, my girl coming in town. Hey, go ahead and vote for me, Ocho. Whatever you say, hey, I'm good. Joe, go ahead and vote for me, man.
23:54Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. The guys don't take it serious. Hell no. No. No. Yeah. I remember when the players could vote in the NBA. You know, we was a part of it. I'm going to be honest with you. I never took it lightly, Uncle Ocho. You know, I just always, you know, obviously gave everybody they just do when needed. I wouldn't want to, excuse me, I wasn't one of those guys who took that stuff for granted. You know what I mean? Because I know how hard guys prepare. And I know how hard they work in the summer to keep their bodies in shape and to come in and dominate throughout an 82-game season, that's challenging, bro.
24:32Shannon Sharpe:That's challenging. But I can see why they took it away because you got all these guys who be clicked up and they vote for their homeboys and they did. So you had to make way with them. That's the thing, Joe. Me, I might not even like a guy, but if a guy, I base it down whether I like you or not. I base it on how well you played on the field. When I look at you, whether I played you or not, when I took you off on tape, because... Oh.
24:57Joe Johnson:You got an Amber Alert over there.
25:00Shannon Sharpe:Amber Alert? Oh. But that's on the TV. Because I was like, hey, my phone ain't. Hey, yeah. Based on what I took off on tape, and if I played the guy, there are some guys that had all these names, I didn't see what they were talking about. I can't vote for you. just because you got hype, you got a name. I didn't think you played that way. Maybe that was an off game. I can just base it on that.
25:34Shannon Sharpe:But I took it serious. I really did. And hopefully people took it serious when they voted for me or they didn't vote for me. It's like, hey, man, he ain't played that well against us. He didn't block well. He didn't catch well. I'm okay with that. But I don't have a problem with this because I thought Miles Garrett, Normally, guys that have the sack total like this, they have an offense that can put pressure on the opposing offense, and you got to play catch-up. Ain't nobody – clearly they had no lead. The biggest lead they might have had was 7-0 in the first drive. Other than that, Joe, they're not playing with a lead.
26:10Shannon Sharpe:And this man got 23 sacks with the constant double team that he's dealing with? They losing games by 21 points, and this man got three, four sacks. How is that even possible? I totally understand what you're saying. I think with the season Miles Garrett had last season, Ocho, do y 'all think he's still going to be as great as he was in Cleveland? Although, you know, they weren't playing meaningful basketball. Now with the Rams, hell, they want Super Bowl. They want it in their building. You know, this is going to be a pretty intense season for them. Do y 'all still see him dominating the way he did last year?
26:46Joe Johnson:I do. Let me tell you why, Joe. No, no, no. I don't think he fought that back up. But not to that magnitude. I don't think so.
26:56Shannon Sharpe:The thing it is, Joe, people don't realize how hard it is to stay motivated when you lose it. Yeah. That is the hardest thing to do. To know when you go out on the field, no matter how well I play, Ocho, the man had five sacks, they lose by 21. The man had three sacks, they lose by 17. How hard is it for you? Joe, you go out there and you're scoring 35 a night and you're losing by 20. It's hard to stay motivated. It's hard. What am I playing for other than for selfish reasons? I play a team sport. My individual accolades, yes, they'll get acknowledged, but everybody's going to say, well, hey, and this was my argument to trade him, Ocho.
27:40Shannon Sharpe:I said, Ocho, they're finishing in last place. They can finish there without him. You're not a miles scaring away. The Rams believe they're a Miles Garrett away from winning a championship. Cleveland wasn't a Miles Garrett away. They needed another Miles Garrett and two or three Miles Garrett on offense. Tight players, not Miles Garrett, but Miles Garrett tight players on offense to be able to compete for a championship. So I get it. For him to stay as motivated and as hungry as he was and to put up the numbers that he did, I think now with something to play for every single week and the expectations that are placed on him, this is what he wanted.
28:20Shannon Sharpe:He said he wanted to compete for a championship. Well, go compete for a championship.
28:26Joe Johnson:I'll tell you this right now, Joe. He might not get 23 sacks, but I can book it. Give him 17, 18, boy.
28:37Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, I was going to say he's going to get at least 14, 15.
28:40Joe Johnson:If he get off to a fast start, like, you know, that first five weeks and you in a, you know, five or six range, you get off to a jump, man, man, listen.
28:52Shannon Sharpe:His thing is that he get a bunch of sacks and he gets sacks in bunches. He'll go three, three, four. And next thing you know, you're like, man, they ain't played before games. He got 10 sacks already.
29:05Joe Johnson:He got to one of them stars. And he very well just might. Get off to a fast like that.
29:12Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. Josh Allen, number two, phenomenal. He didn't play well in Denver, and we beat him up. We said he didn't play well. The careless turnover right before the half, he fumbles the ball. That led to a field goal. He had a guy wide open in overtime that would have won them the game. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Was that overtime or regulation? It might have been regulation because they ended up selling for a field goal. So it might have been regulation that possibly would have won them the game. He didn't play well. He did not play well that game. And Ocho and I, we came on that night and said he didn't play well that night.
29:52Shannon Sharpe:He's got to play better in those type of moments. Football is not guys play. Nobody, no quarterback has played great the entirety of the game. But those moments, it's moments that we remember Tom Brady. It's moments that we remember Joe Montana. It's moments that we remember Tom Brady and a John Elway. It's moments. Yes, Jordan turned the ball over. But what about those moments when he needed to be Mike? He was. When Kobe needed to be Kobe, he was. That's the difference. In the moments, when the moments call you to be your absolute best, can and will you be that? Right. Josh Allen was that. B.
30:37Shannon Sharpe:John Robinson, what do we say?
30:39Joe Johnson:I mean, what do we say? Ain't nobody arguing that. You can't. What do we say? You can't argue that one. That boy, a dog. He nice, Joe. Premier. He nice.
30:51Shannon Sharpe:He is nice. Matthew Stafford. Hey, you could have easily had Matthew Stafford, who number one. Led the league in passing yards, led the league in passing touchdowns. what was he 40 plus 40 plus touchdowns eight interceptions
31:10Shannon Sharpe:jsn led the league led the league and receiving yardage right run extra a it's like he's gliding i mean he ain't nothing he's not in a hurry everything everything looks the same you don't know if he's breaking out breaking in he's staying up the scene he's running the seven he's running the sale he's stopping everything is just he's just so effortless. It's just like... He nice. He nice.
31:36Shannon Sharpe:Everything is at that same pace. Christian McCaffrey can do it all. He run between the tackles. For a guy his size running between the tackles, can catch it out of the backfield. He'd have been an outstanding slot receiver if he couldn't do anything but play the slot. Can run routes like a wide receiver. Puka Nakua. Puka missed a couple of games and still led the league in receptions.
32:03Shannon Sharpe:Micah what do we say about Micah you saw the flashes and why Green Bay gave up what they gave up to get him and then turned around and gave him the big contract
32:13Joe Johnson:didn't he have double digit sacks before he even got hurt
32:18Shannon Sharpe:yes yes he's about to have more double digit sacks is he going to be ready to start the season or not no missed the first four games missed the first four games Jameel Gibbs
32:33Joe Johnson:Boy he You mess around and take the wrong angle you want to He get past that second level You might as well strike up the bend
32:41Shannon Sharpe:Yeah he run out from under an angle He definitely can run out from under an angle Strike up the bend And what do we say about Pastor Tan He's just the premier corner in football He's the standard
32:54Joe Johnson:I mean he can't stop me but he's the standard
32:58Shannon Sharpe:I mean 6 '3", 200 pounds. Great. I mean, technically sound. Yeah. When you think of him, you think technique. Yeah. Fundamentally, he's fundamentally sound. He has no blivishes. Be nice. Very fluid. For a guy his size to be able to open his hips like he does, Joe, and turn and take off, decelerate and get out of break, get downhill to come back down, to sit down. and make a mistake, he can get it to the house, I like this top 10. I think they did a great job. I think they did a great job of selecting the top 10. So whoever voted, obviously there have only been three defensive guys that's ever been voted number one.
33:44Shannon Sharpe:J.J. Watt was the first to do it in 2015. Aaron Donald did it in 2019. And now that just goes to show you how dominant they were in the season in which they got it. Because football now is an offensive game, Ocho. They don't pay no attention. because the guy's putting up gaudy numbers. Guys getting 129, 130, 1700, 1800 yards. Guys rushing for 2000. It's just the numbers that the guys are putting up offensively. It's just hard for the defense to keep up. Yeah. But I don't have a problem. I do not have a problem with this list. I think this list is very well done. I think Miles Garrett was very, very deserving of that.
34:25Shannon Sharpe:And so the number one player voted on by the players is Myles Garrett. Josh Allen was second. Number two, B. John Robinson, Matthew Stafford, JSN, C. Matt, Puka Nakua, Micah, Jameer Gibbs, Pat Sertan, the second. The Rams put three guys in the top seven. Number one, number four, and number seven, Puka Nakua. Wow.
34:59Shannon Sharpe:Roger Goodell has just signed a four-year extension with the NFL at the end of the newest deal. Goodell will be nearly 72 years of age and have served the commissioner as an NFL commissioner for 24 years. Goodell contract has not been disclosed. However, his last contract reportedly paid him$64 million per year. The same as Patrick Mahomes makes per year.
35:24Joe Johnson:That's the man at the top of the food chain. That's the man that has the most difficult job to do, Uncle Joe. Yep. A lot of people don't like it, but his job is difficult. Obviously, being a voice, what, for 32 owners? Yep. Yeah. Be the mouthpiece. Yeah, he's their mouthpiece. And obviously, not really a fan of those publicly, especially fans of teams. But he just does what he's told to do from the 32 owners. Yeah. He's the bad guy. Yeah. Anytime he comes to the podium, whether it's a draft or whether he has a speaking engagement, most of the time, he gets booed. He does. And, hey, it comes with a job.
36:03Joe Johnson:It comes with a territory. And a lot of people probably wouldn't understand it. I remember when he first came and he came in, he was with a giant fist on him. He did. He had the Article 46 in his back pocket.
36:15Shannon Sharpe:He had that Article 46.
36:17Joe Johnson:Yeah, he made it.
36:19Shannon Sharpe:Hey, hey, can y 'all imagine how stressful his job is, bro?
36:24Joe Johnson:Got to be. Got to be ready. Oh, my God. You never show it, though.
36:29Shannon Sharpe:It's stressful for the simple fact, guys. I think a lot of his stress comes to do with public perception. Yeah. When a player does something, they want the player held to a higher standard or held more accountable than if somebody did the same act in public, you know, a private citizen. Yeah, yeah. So, and plus, it's public. This guy and the guy in the NFL, he can be the number one player on the team or he can be the 33rd player or the 50th player on the team. he's an NFL player and so he gets critiqued harsher the fans want blood they love him but it's like uh uh no he should have known better at the end of the day no matter what you do no matter how much money you make you're still human you have frailties people I don't know what it is people think because you make a ton of money that everything that would that would cause you to run a file as a man just goes away.
37:32Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. You don't have desires. You don't have anything. I'm like, he's still a man. Yeah. Money don't change you from being a man. No. Money doesn't change you. Hey, you just have access. It means to probably possibly get you out of things more so than the typical average male would be able to do. but you still have those same desires. You still have those same lusts, a lot of those same lusts you still want to do. You just have money to be able to do it on a grander scale.
38:04Joe Johnson:Yeah, that's it.
38:05Shannon Sharpe:But I like commission. I mean, Ocho, you know you've been around him. I've been around him. I like him. Yeah. I understand his job is hard. And people think, well, he doesn't want to suspend anybody. He just understands he has to.
38:20Joe Johnson:Yeah, he has no choice. Uncle Joe. It all comes down to also having to suspend people. When you mess up, you got to protect the shield. That's the number one rule. He has to be able to protect the shield. And players have to understand that. Now, he also understands that, you know, we're all human. We're going to make mistakes. And a lot of people judge, oh, you make this kind of money. Why would you be doing that? Or why would you be doing this? You know, a lot of people get stopped, you know, for drinking and driving. I mean, it's just they make mistakes. Yes. And at times, he has to come down and rule because he's not just protecting, not just the players themselves, not the team that the players are representing that they play for, but he's also protecting the NFL shield.
39:02Joe Johnson:You have to understand that. I mean, if you get to know him, which a lot of people don't, a lot of players, former players, maybe a few current, they might not like him, but you have to put yourself in his shoes and understand the job that he has to do. It's tough.
39:17Shannon Sharpe:It's hard.
39:17Joe Johnson:And I think that's why a lot of players don't like him. I think our relationship is a little bit different because I enjoyed my time dealing with Mr. Goodell. And I was one of the few that he couldn't control. And I enjoyed being the villain during my time. Hey, Joe, you know by the time we got to year six, right? Maybe year five. And Goodell was in. And I was getting fined over and over and over. And I remember the league office number being on the FedEx of one of my fines. And I called the league office. And I asked to speak to Roger, and he happened to be in. And they said he would call you back.
39:52Joe Johnson:So I gave my cell phone number. And, dude, he called me back like 20 minutes later. And I let him know. I said, listen, I'm not even going to appeal this fine with you or Merton Hanks at the time, but I'm letting you know ahead of time I'm going to be sending my fine money in a little bit early. Because as much as you guys are trying to control the integrity of the game, I feel the game should be played with joy. I should be able to celebrate and have fun doing so. And so I'm just letting you know ahead of time that I'm not going to stop what I'm doing. And I'll be saying if I know I have some coming up on the weekend, I will be sending, now that they have an address, I'm sending my fine money in early.
40:35Joe Johnson:But from year six and on, if I knew I was going to do some joke, I mailed it to the league office at the same time. If I didn't do anything, if I didn't score that week, I just told him, just hold that because if I don't score this week I'm going to do something next week you ain't got to waste your time sending me no fine. Hey they fine you
40:52Shannon Sharpe:for wearing certain cleats don't they? Oh I had gold cleats all orange. Yeah you got to wear you got to wear color you got to be white yeah you can't have more than I mean when I played you couldn't have but couldn't have but two colors you couldn't have a three color cleat. Yeah.
41:07Joe Johnson:Joe I'm out there Joe I had the orange chin strap when we wore orange jerseys I had the black chin strap I was like I was an optimist I ain't care I ain't got my own streamer remember the streamer towels you're not supposed to wear streamer towels I ain't wearing that thick old quarterback towel
41:26Shannon Sharpe:but you remember Ocho everything that you see the NFL did they got from the players players used to cut the towels they didn't have those little streamer towels they would cut their own towels the thing that you have to put on the head guys were wearing stocking caps so they do rags so they're like well hold on there's a market for that merch yes they know fans want to wear stuff want to see whatever the players wear but yeah Joe they'll find you if your socks come down you can't show no skin on your legs you can't show you the jersey needed to be tucked in if you wanted to come out they give you like one or two plays to tuck it back in And if you didn't, that's a$5 ,000 fine.
42:12Shannon Sharpe:That's me. Hey, that's the same thing with basketball. You got to come into the game with your shirt already tucked in. You used to couldn't wear all these different colors that y 'all see these guys wearing now, these lime greens with black jerseys. You used to couldn't do none of that, Ocho. You used to, you was only allowed to wear two types of colors. You know, you wear whites with your homes and you wear dark shoes with your ways. Now, hell, it don't matter. You can be wearing, you can be the Hawks, and you can wear orange shoes. You know what I mean? It don't matter now. You know, hey, they let them kind of, you know, do what they kind of want.
42:50Shannon Sharpe:But like you said, when we talk about the merch, when they were doing the headbands, guys used to wear these big, thick headbands. What did the NBA do? They wouldn't start getting their own thick NBA headbands because everything that you wear, it needs to have that NBA logo, whether it's the socks. You like them knee-high socks pulled all the way up? Hell, we're going to get something made for you. Don't even worry about that. Yeah, you like your arm sleeve? Yeah, we're going to have that with the NBA logo on there. So y 'all right. Hey, everything is about merch. When they see. Leggings. Remember the leggings?
43:20Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. Where they come out with the leggings? Yeah. Oh, y 'all like leggings, huh? Okay.
43:25Joe Johnson:Yeah. I'll hook it up for you. Yeah, anything they can monetize on, you know, that they would tell us, okay, you can't do that, so we're going to make it.
43:36Shannon Sharpe:and then you be our model for it yeah hey they probably came out with the shices didn't the NFL got their own shices yeah when it's cold yes but the players started doing it before the NFL had them yeah y 'all like that y 'all thug it like that okay we all get up on you
43:54Joe Johnson:I enjoyed it that was like remember when you was in high school it was always one bad kid I'm talking about really bad kid always in the principal ball yeah always trouble always yeah that's what that's what it's like with me and Adele no hard feelings but he just understand you weren't going to be able to control me even over the NFL it was a structured environment yeah but now now yeah yeah uncle I tell uncle all the time is is he's so powerful and I'm not want to say that but he's pushing green lights on certain stuff that I'm doing, that's away from the game and I am of no value to anymore.
44:34Joe Johnson:And I know it. I just got to get word of mouth. Well, you know who co-signed for you on this, huh? Wait, for real? I don't even play no more. Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
44:46Shannon Sharpe:That's how it is. That's why I tell the guys, man, stay in good with your team. Don't burn the bridges. Nope. Because they got value for a long, long time. Long time. Yeah, you never know when you got to cross that bridge again. Never. Never know. But I like... I mean, he's never been my commissioner because I had Tagliabue. Tagliabue, yeah. So, you had Tagliabue too when you first came in the league. He lived when I lived. Maybe, what, two, three years maybe? Yep. Yep. That's exactly right. The Miami Dolphins are underdogs in all 17 of their games this season. The Dolphins projected win total for 2026, four and a half games.
45:27Shannon Sharpe:The early marks My staff have them selected number one in 2027. Jordan Brooks says, I don't think there's one outlet on social media, anybody that got us picked with anything. Not that it matters, but that's just what it is. I don't think any of our opponents respect us, so 100 % underdog mindset, and I think that's always the best position to be in. Ocho, how many win for your guppies?
45:49Joe Johnson:I say, honestly, I'm going to be honest with you, Uncle Joe. Chad, I'm going to be honest with y 'all. You have to understand, the Dolphins have done a complete overhaul. Complete overhaul. We starting from scratch. So, obviously, I'm hoping to give the coach. Y 'all ain't starting from scratch. Y 'all got to go buy the ingredients. That's a good way to put it. Now, this is the good thing, though, Unc. What's that? Even though we got to go buy the ingredients, the foundation is set. We got our quarterback. We got a quarterback. We got some good young receivers. But they have to play miles ahead of how good they may feel they are.
46:23Joe Johnson:You definitely got to play above their pay grade, Ocho. You got to. Y 'all got to play like them dogs out there. So it's going to be a rough season. Defense is going to have to play well. I know Brooks is obviously our leader. He's our captain on defense. But it's going to be tough. And I like that he said it's good for us to be the underdogs because now we have to surprise everybody else. We got to surprise everybody else.
46:45Shannon Sharpe:I got y 'all winning two games, Joe.
46:47Joe Johnson:God damn. Joe, I was going to say maybe five. Maybe five. Five? Yeah, I got five. I got five. And if we do get the number one pick, we're going to get Jeremiah Smith.
47:00Shannon Sharpe:Maybe five in two years.
47:05Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, that was my next question. You want Jeremiah Smith or you want Arch Manning?
47:09Joe Johnson:Jeremiah Smith.
47:14Shannon Sharpe:Jeremiah Smith. Who you want, Augie? If you Miami, who you get? It's going to be hard because I took a quarterback. I mean, I just played a quarterback. I got a quarterback on a three-year deal. the question is, it's going to be very interesting to see how well he plays. If he plays well, I think they do go. I think they take Jeremiah Smith. But, boy, you got to think about it, Ocho. We had had – it ain't but two wide receivers have ever gone number one overall. Yeah. 1984 and 1996. Keyshawn, yeah. Irvin Frye went number one in 84 and Keyshawn went number one in 96.
47:46Joe Johnson:Yeah. Hey, hey, hey, Jeremiah, hey, he going to be next. Yeah. Hey, Joe, and the chat, I think the chat will also just agree with me as well. If you take last year's draft, right? Yes. If Jeremiah was coming out last year, I think he's going top three. Yeah. If Jeremiah was coming out.
48:02Shannon Sharpe:Well, he's definitely been the first receiver taken. Yeah, absolutely. So wherever the first receiver went, I don't think he's going – he ain't going number one overall. He ain't going in front of Mendoza. Raiders need a quarterback.
48:12Joe Johnson:Right, right.
48:13Shannon Sharpe:Absolutely. They need a receiver too, but I ain't taking no receiver when I ain't got nobody getting the damn ball. Right. But I'm just saying, he's that good.
48:19Joe Johnson:Yeah. Even in his freshman year, if he was allowed to come out, Joe, I still would have been the top three pick. That's how good he's been. So now with him in his junior year, off to a great start already, man, come on, man. That's a no-brainer to me, especially if you just got Malik Willis. It's a no-brainer.
48:39Shannon Sharpe:It's going to be interesting to see what the Dolphins do.

We're looking at the opportunity of a lifetime for us and the other families. While the world was mourning, five powerful New York families saw an opportunity.

53:05Shannon Sharpe:with the Texans before the season begins. The Houston Texans offered a contract exceeding $50 million annually, but he's better betting on himself to hopefully reach a near$60 million per year. Let's go. Make it$70 million. Make it$70 million. Joe, are you surprised he turned down$50 plus million?
53:24Joe Johnson:Absolutely not. Absolutely not. Listen, after the season he had last year, after the way the season ended, I'm glad he didn't assign the$50 million. Even if they came to him, in a sense, it's somewhat disrespectful and for what I know he can do. What I know he can do, obviously, I know he was injured last year, but the Mills had to come in and take over for him, but when he did come back, it wasn't pretty. That defense carried them most of the way. David Mills played extremely well. David Mills, right? Davis. Yeah, yeah. He played extremely well, and once they got to the postseason, C.J. Stroud was a shell of himself.
53:55Joe Johnson:If he can get it back to what he looked like his rookie year, obviously, once teams get film on you, things change a little bit, you know, in order, trying to be consistent, and that's what he needed to do. This year, is a make it a break a year for C.J. Stroud and a few other quarterbacks, you know, in the league. And I think the fact that he has to prove himself, he wants to show the organization that I can be a quarterback for the future. And I'm glad he didn't take that deal. And obviously this is a year for him. I don't see it as pressure for him. Just go out there and do what you do. When you have a defense like they have, you know.
54:28Joe Johnson:They had that defense last year, how he looked. They had a pretty good defense the year, but his sophomore year, how did he look? when it mattered most. How did he look? I'm not worried about the regular season. They're going to get to the postseason with that. That's all I'm talking about. That's all I'm talking about. Get a little further than you did last year. Let them see that you are the one. Let them see that you are the answer. You got to check every, you got to mark every, check every box. You got to check every box.
54:56Shannon Sharpe:Well, hey, I hope it works out because everybody talking about betting on themselves. There have been some, we've seen situations where guys bet on themselves and it don't work out. See, we only tell the stories of the guys that bet on themselves and everything. That one?
55:08Joe Johnson:Okay, okay, okay, okay. I like him. I like him, man. But the Nico Collin got him. Nico got him. Montgomery got him. Be able to take some of that pressure off of him. They got all. I'm trying to think who was the two and the three because Higgins went down. Hutchinson.
55:30Shannon Sharpe:they got Hutchinson and they got the tight end from the Dallas, I forget his name
55:35Joe Johnson:Swartz Texans receivers they keep changing players keep changing oh you know who else is there? from New England oh Boote Boote yeah
55:51Shannon Sharpe:it's some pressure it's some pressure on CJ though
55:54Joe Johnson:yeah it's some pressure
55:56Shannon Sharpe:I'm cool with him turning the money down okay Ocho if you gonna come out you know and get right I just don't think I hear y 'all always talking about oh man CJ gonna get back to who he was as a rookie hey man it's just like saying man we waiting for Deshaun Watson to turn into that Deshaun Watson no no no that's completely different nah I'm just saying bro like that ain't nah nah I'm saying we want CJ to play better but who knows if he's gonna be an elite quarterback I understand what you saying hell he just gotta be manageable considering the fact that they have such a great defense. Man, hold on.
56:28Shannon Sharpe:Yo, Coach O, you think they're going to pay a guy$60 million for managing the games?
56:34Joe Johnson:No, but he's not even a managing-style quarterback. He's an aggressive pass to the ball. He loves to take those shots downfield. So, I mean, just play freely. Play freely. And you really have no choice. You really have no choice, especially in this pass-happy league. And they're a team that throws the ball.
56:51Shannon Sharpe:I know somebody that bet on himself. Kaminga bet on himself. How's that working out for him? What about Dennis Schroeder? He turned out a four-year,$84 million deal. And he's been signing one-year deals ever since. Kaminga turned out two for 48. Now he accepted two for 13.
57:10Joe Johnson:You know what, too? Those two players that you just named, I'm not sure who the people are they have in their circle, but the situation for C.J. Stroud is a little different because he gets to control the outcome. He gets to test the ball more than they do. and their respective crafts and what they do. He gets to control the outcome. He controls the wins and the losses. Everything is on his shoulders. So guess what? When they lose, guess who's going to get blamed?
57:36Shannon Sharpe:Oh, as always. So, yeah, he has more control for good things, but he also has more control for bad things. I don't know. I have to look at that contract. I got to look at that. Hey, what y 'all offering? Y 'all offering Trevor Lawrence$55,$56 million a year? Y 'all going to give me, what,$125 guaranteed? Guarantee, 130, 140 guarantee. I don't know, Ocho. I got to think long and hard.
58:00Joe Johnson:Oh, I'm not thinking long and hard.
58:02Shannon Sharpe:Absolutely.
58:04Joe Johnson:You know who else they probably came to, too? Wait. What was that? Jayden Daniels is in year three or four. Just three. Oh, four.
58:12Shannon Sharpe:They the same draft class, right? No. No. He was the year 20. Jayden Daniels in the same draft class. Oh, okay. And Bryce Young and CJ was in the same draft class. Okay. This is CJ's fourth year. This is Jayden's third year.
58:26Joe Johnson:Hey, that's another one, huh? You just brought his name up. Bryce or CJ? I mean, or Jayden.
58:32Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
58:33Joe Johnson:Bryce is also an improvement year as well. Absolutely. Trying to show us a team. Listen, I can get it done. The next 10 years, I'm your guy. This is the year for them. And I think they're going to pick up and build on what they did last year. Yes, you're right.
58:47Shannon Sharpe:It's the year of the quarterback. I tell you what, watch the difference. Watch how Caleb Williams plays, and after the season, how quick they get a deal done.
58:57Joe Johnson:Oh, yeah. But listen, even if they get a deal done with Caleb, he will probably reset the market to its highest value. Do you know why? Because they believe him. Oh, yeah, absolutely.
59:09Shannon Sharpe:I mean, look at him. Houston is hesitant to go to allow CJ. Remember, everybody said, hold on, of all the people that could get the most guaranteed money, this was the guy that reset the market?
59:22Joe Johnson:Yeah, absolutely. Well, if you watch his film, you watch what he's able to do, absolutely. One of the few quarterbacks, one of the few quarterbacks, Uncle Joe in the league, that could do something out of nothing. I don't care what you scheme up. If what you scheme up doesn't work, he can emphasize. Emphasize. Is that the right word? Improvise. There we go. I'm talking about emphasize. Yeah, he can improvise better than most. Yeah. This is the make or break of your film boy. Big time. Him and Bryce.
59:50Shannon Sharpe:because it's a lot weighing on their play meaning hell if they play well especially the Texans it's going to be hard to beat them man with that front they got you know what I mean defensively that's all he got to do Joe we don't need 40 touchdowns from CJ it would be nice wait a minute with that defensive 40 touchdowns they win it the Super Bowl
1:00:21Joe Johnson:absolutely 42 ,000 what we can't have is the C.H. drought we saw in the playoffs two playoff games seven turnovers Joe this is back to back weeks
1:00:37Shannon Sharpe:you're right Ocho whatever he did his rookie year go back and do that now it's a little bit more difficult because like you said, Ocho, they got film. They got film on the night. They have to stop you now. We're 40. He's like, okay, he could be good. He might. He may be. Now they know. They know what you're capable of. They know your strength. They play to your weaknesses. And you got to go.
1:01:01Joe Johnson:I'm so glad you just said that, Uncle Joe. You heard a joke how Uncle said they know your strengths and know your weaknesses.
1:01:08Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. Once you get film out, they see the tendencies
1:01:11Joe Johnson:and the way they always use you. In the one position you can't hide, Joe, that goddamn quarterback.
1:01:16Shannon Sharpe:Yeah.
1:01:17Joe Johnson:You can't hide him. Every other position, you can hide him. You can do little things. Yeah, yeah. You can do little things, you know, and scheme your way into not getting him exposed. Quarterback? In today's game? Nah.
1:01:33Shannon Sharpe:I already know it. But it's going to be very interesting. Look, he's betting on himself. Hey, you can't be mad for a guy gambling and betting on himself. Hey, all he got to do is hold it in the road. All he got to do is hold it. Just look, in big games, you got to play good in big games. Yeah. The defense will take the games over in games that you're the better team. It's just when you go up with guys and you got to face another quarterback that's equally as good, if not better than you, that's when you're going to have to outplay it. We've seen him do it. Yeah. We just haven't seen him do it enough over the last two years.
1:02:13If he does that, he's going to get that$58,$60-plus million contract
1:02:19Shannon Sharpe:that he's seeking.
1:02:22Joe Johnson:Hold on. What happens if he doesn't play well? Is that deal off the table?
1:02:27Shannon Sharpe:Hell yeah. I can give you no$50 million if you don't play good. And guess what? Guess what, Ocho? They'll pick up his 50-year option and just let him pick out. And I got two franchise tags. So theoretically, I got him under contract for four more years at my number as something that I can stomach.
1:02:45Joe Johnson:That's what gets you. That's what gets you. That'd be sick if that happened. Honestly, knowing him and knowing the competitor that he is, that's not going to happen, but that's nasty business from an organization. That's nasty business.
1:03:00Shannon Sharpe:If you offer somebody for a house, you offer them$20 million for a house. Sight unseen. Then all of a sudden you go in there, you look at the house like, well, damn, the paint chipping. They've got a crack in the foundation. X, Y, and Z. You still offering them$20 million? Hell no. It's going to take some repairs to fix this thing up. It's going to cost me some money to get it. That's how teams are going to look at the quarterback. Yep. He just needs to play well. He just needs to block out all the stuff. Last year, like Joe said, last year that's old stuff. The new stuff, the new CJ, he cut his hair.
1:03:39Shannon Sharpe:he believes he's worth more now he just has to go out there and prove it he just has to go out there and prove it because based on what he did his rookie year I was just like oh my god we ain't seen anything like this here
1:03:53Joe Johnson:they got him one first thing I said they got him one yeah
1:04:04Shannon Sharpe:general manager Hyatt Roseman said he does not agree with the idea that this is a make or break season for Jalen Hurts to remain the team's starting quarterback. I think the bottom line for us is winning football games, and all the guys does is win football games. That includes our head coach as well. For me, the barometer is winning football games. In terms of what Jalen does, he's another guy with a tremendous track record. All he does is go out there and play good football. Really excited to have him as our quarterback, excited about this season and what we have going forward. I know there are a lot of fan bases out there that would love the results we have with him as our starting quarterback.
1:04:36Shannon Sharpe:Hurts is 57-25 as his starting quarterback in the NFL, all with the Eagles. The passing offense has been a point of scrutiny in the recent years. Last season, the Eagles finished 23rd in passing yards, less than 200 a game. He was 19th in QBR, a tick under 53. The high-salary offense in the NFL underperformed the whole season, ranking first in three and outs, and 19th in points per game at 22.3.
1:05:02Joe Johnson:Ocho? Yeah. Hey, Unc, listen, look at those stats and where they were early in their career when they won the Super Bowl the first time. They threw the ball a little bit more. They threw the ball a little bit more, obviously being able to run it well as well. And to say a quarterback job is on the line two years removed from winning the Super Bowl is ridiculous. Utterly ridiculous. It's utterly ridiculous. And I know there are a lot of gripes, a lot of people that fuss about Jalen Hurst's style of play, the way he plays, he doesn't throw the ball, he doesn't anticipate throws. I get all that. But one thing you can't take away from Jalen is that he wins, and he wins consistently.
1:05:42Joe Johnson:He has a very, very good record. And what they ask of him to do in that offense, it's not aesthetically pleasing like watching the Chargers or like watching Josh Allen or Joe Burrow who throw the ball at a high rate every single game. That's not what they ask him to do. They just don't. they run more of a balanced offense. I think they run to open up the pass, and that's the way it's always been. And they've won with that formula with Jalen Hurts at the helm. Well, I mean, you can't do any more
1:06:15Shannon Sharpe:than what's asked of you. They don't ask him to throw the ball 35, 40 times a game. They don't let him chuck the ball around the field like that. That's not what they let him do or ask him to do. So, like I said, at the end of the day, the results are about winning. Yeah, you like to have Goddard stats and win, but given a choice, I'll take the wins over the gaudy stats. Yeah. Go ahead, Jocho.
1:06:40Joe Johnson:I'm glad you said that. I'm going to let you finish. But when you don't have the gaudy stats, you get ridiculous comments that has Howie Roseman having to speak out about it because the stats aren't gaudy.
1:06:50Shannon Sharpe:Well, you ain't going to have no gaudy. How are you going to get gaudy stats if you're doing the tush push? You run a quarterback draw. What kind of gaudy stats are you going to have, Ocho? hey you got to improvise a little bit got to improvise a little bit i don't know if they'll
1:07:06Joe Johnson:allow that in that offense well listen they have uh is it minion manny yeah
1:07:16Joe Johnson:i'm assuming maybe but you always want to protect your quarterback you always want to play to his strengths and when you play to his strengths obviously that's what you that's what you do best and that's what you do well now maybe some weaknesses that he might have maybe they worked on those in the offseason, and we'll see a different version of Jalen Hurts, but it's not something that's going to change the whole offense and start running shotgun and throwing the ball 40, 50 times a game. That's not going to happen. These did works. And what they've always won through it.
1:07:42Shannon Sharpe:Hey, look, I think the hard part is because the Eagles have won it. They've been at the mountaintop. But we're putting so much on Jalen Hurts. Hell, Saquon Barkley was – I mean, look how great he was that year. You know what I mean? So I think the fact that Saquon didn't have a greater year as he had the year before, it put a lot of pressure on Jalen Hurts. And now this is why we're talking about this. You know what I'm saying? But, you know, I think if Jalen Hurts comes out and performs, obviously if Saquon is playing at a high level running that ball, you know what I mean? I think the story is a little different.
1:08:17Shannon Sharpe:I don't know if it's really much about Jalen Hurts. I think it's more about Saquon if y 'all ask me, bro. The offensive line. The offensive line was banged up. Their best offensive line, Malayne Johnson, was in. Landon Dickinson was injured. The center was nicked. They didn't have Makai Bector. The right guard wasn't as dominant as he was the previous year. There are a lot of things that went wrong, and the offense was so reliant the previous year. When they won the Super Bowl, on Saquon having that type of year, the offensive line was outstanding. I mean, he was getting five yards before anybody even laid a hand on him.
1:08:52Joe Johnson:Right, yeah. And you know what else? That year they won the Super Bowl, Saquon was playing so well and them having to put that extra man in the box, Uncle Joe, when it was time to pass it, AJ and Devontae running wide open. Yeah. Because you got no choice. You know, your defense is at the mercy because you got to stack the box because of Saquon having so much success. They stacking the box and he's still
1:09:16Shannon Sharpe:still getting it.
1:09:18Joe Johnson:Going crazy. That O-line. They have the best O-line in the NFL.
1:09:23Shannon Sharpe:You look at the right tackle, Tackle left, right tackle, left tackle, Valada at left, Lane Johnson at right, Dickinson is a top three guard. Yeah, they were banged up, Joe. They were. But hold on, hold on. Saquon almost had them at 2 ,000 rushing yards. What you mean? Ain't he supposed to be able to make something out of nothing? We're talking about the top, the upper echelon of running backs. Yeah.
1:09:46Joe Johnson:What did he finish with, Joe? He had a decency. Yeah, he had decency. He had like 1 ,200 yards. Shoot, that's good.
1:09:53Shannon Sharpe:That's an 800-yard dip, though, Ocho.
1:09:57Joe Johnson:Yeah. Yeah, but we know why.
1:10:00Shannon Sharpe:And them young guns, I don't think he made the Pro Bowl last year because that was Bijan, Jameer Gibbs, and Christian McCaffrey.
1:10:09Joe Johnson:Hey, them first two names you just called? Boy, they're special. I think, you know what? Saquon is going to be able to take all the pressure off Jalen Hurts because I got a feeling them boys going to get off to a hot start. They need to. Going to get off to a hot start. Because who they open up with?
1:10:31Shannon Sharpe:I don't know who they open up with, Joe. I think they're going to have to get off to a hot start because the NFC ain't no slouch. You look at the Rams. You look at Seattle. You look at the 49ers. You look at Green Bay. You look at Chicago. You look at Detroit. You look at the Cowboys. They're going to have to get off to a hot start. hey
1:10:50Joe Johnson:the first the first okay they got commanders first who opens up with a division game
1:10:56Shannon Sharpe:the Broncos
1:10:57Joe Johnson:we do
1:10:57Shannon Sharpe:Monday night against the Chiefs
1:10:59Joe Johnson:the Cowboys do too and then they got they got the Titans next
1:11:03Shannon Sharpe:and they got they got the Bears that's gonna be a good one that'll be a good game that'll be that'll be a good game yeah
1:11:13Joe Johnson:wait which one the Bears and the Eagles yeah
1:11:17Shannon Sharpe:the Bears and the Eagles man. Yeah, they opened up with Washington. Then they got the Titans. Then they got Chicago. Then they got the Rams at home. Jacksonville at home. Carolina at home. You know, one of these games, this Jacksonville game must be overseas or something. Because ain't no way they got all these damn home games. Back to back to back to back to back. The NFL Network game, 8.30 a.m. Yeah, that's an overseas game. They play in Jacksonville overseas. That's an 8.30 a.m. game. And then they got Carolina, Dallas, Washington, New York, Pittsburgh, Dallas, Arizona, Indy, Seattle, Houston.
1:11:57Shannon Sharpe:The back end of their schedule is Pittsburgh, Dallas, Arizona, Indy, Seattle, Houston, San Fran, the Giants.
1:12:06Joe Johnson:Hey, Joe, what's your cowboy going to do with them eagles, Joe?
1:12:11Shannon Sharpe:Send their ass up north. Ain't that where the birds fly? Don't the birds fly up north? Yeah, send them up north. They're going south for the winter, Joe. Now they fly. We're going to send them south for the winter. Yeah, yeah. Joe said, hey, Joe, you got a lot of confidence in them Cowboys. Now, I hate it if they disappoint you. I really do.
1:12:32Joe Johnson:Hey, this is what I like about Joe. Joe is consistent with it. Yeah, yeah. He's consistent with it. He like Clipper Darryl with the Clippers. No matter what. I'm going to support my team. I like that, Joe. What you mean? I think we're going to be one of the best teams in the NFL this year.
1:12:47Shannon Sharpe:Yo, I said that too.
1:12:48Joe Johnson:I mean, what you saying?
1:12:49Shannon Sharpe:Oh, okay. I'll act like I'm speaking Chinese or something.
1:12:56Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. Every time I bring the Cowboys up, he got something to say. Yeah. Yeah, I mean, y 'all be all right. Y 'all, you know, I don't think they're going to be as good as three what? Week three. Week three. Week three, homie. Yeah, when we see y 'all. Damn, Jack. Yeah, you don't need you looking for your helmet. Over 300, run 400. Come on. He's more than capable of doing that. Now with that defensive line, we got. Now with that front, we got. We's not playing with y 'all this year. So I'm just letting you know.
1:13:25Joe Johnson:Hey, what, Derek, here we go do, huh? Woo-hoo.
1:13:30Shannon Sharpe:Chat. You know what? I might need to go to the game. Where we playing at? Where we playing at? Is it Brazil? Oh, hell no. I ain't going there.
1:13:46Shannon Sharpe:I'll be right here watching that OT.
1:13:52Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, that game to Brazil. Damn. But, I mean, look. I mean, they don't make you no bad brother. Your team don't do what you think they're going to do, Joe. Hey, Ojo, me picking CD land. I'm going to be hitting y 'all with this all season. We hit that thing, Joe? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, with my sights there on. I'm going to have my sights there on to y 'all, yeah. Yeah, okay. Don't worry about it. Hey, what would they play? They play Baltimore?
1:14:26Shannon Sharpe:Well, we – You got to put the seatbelt on, huh? Hey, we strapping that up. Oh, no, it's over for y 'all, Joe. Oh, and the Rams. And then – ooh, did you – ooh, ooh. That's Philly's schedule. I can't wait until y 'all get the Rams. Miles Garrett might have like six sacks. yeah I guess who y 'all man please come on be for real AD might have three Kobe Turner have to Fisk have one Brad Byron oh yeah they might have to
1:14:58Shannon Sharpe:come on man you ain't come on now come on I'm talking video oh that man ain't being realistic right now. I can see it right now. Calling it. Man, you tripping. You tripping. You tripping. I'm going to try to come with a quick game, but them boys Jalen Watson and McDuffie.
1:15:22Shannon Sharpe:They're going to be laying helmets. They're going to be laying their helmet. Well, they ain't got a couple on. And with y 'all right tackle, I can see AD playing in that game with that right tackle. Still or Jones. I hope they watching this too. Because if I steal Jones, y 'all hear that? I need y 'all to tighten up, baby. And tighten up. Ain't nothing they can do about that, don't you? Ain't nothing they can do about it. You bought a sofa you didn't have to assemble.
