In short

The hosts debate Cam Ward’s preseason comments after a reporter questioned his play, arguing over whether preseason performance matters versus accountability. They also cover NFL transactions and trades, including Aaron Donald’s return and a Steelers trade, plus lighter segments about other teams’ moves (Dolphins) and schedule talk.

Guests (hosts/participants)

No named guests appear in the transcript. The episode is driven by three recurring hosts: “Unk” (sports host), “Ocho” (sports host), and “Joe” (sports host). They banter throughout; no external guest interviews are shown.

Guest backgrounds

Not provided in the transcript beyond their roles as NFL commentators/hosts.

Key claims

  1. Preseason results “don’t mean nothing,” but players should still take accountability when they don’t play well.
  2. The reporter’s question is framed as “dumb” because it’s based on limited snaps/vanilla schemes.
  3. Cam Ward’s response is criticized as too defensive/PC, and the hosts compare it to other quarterbacks’ public answers.
  4. Steelers’ Broderick Jones has upside but inconsistency must be fixed.

Notable examples

  • Cam Ward asked “How would you assess your play this preseason?” and replies “Not well.”
  • Steelers trade: OT Broderick Jones to Cowboys for a 2027 third and sixth, sending Jones and a 2027 fourth.
  • Dolphins trade: Quinn Ewers to Jaguars for day-three compensation.

2:49Shannon Sharpe:Cam Ward got into it with a report about his play this preseason. Check this out.

2:54Joe Johnson:Uh-oh.

2:55Shannon Sharpe:Uh-oh.

3:04Uh-oh. How would you...

3:27Shannon Sharpe:I don't think I'm glad you don't think so good

3:35Shannon Sharpe:sorry about that yet

3:39Shannon Sharpe:We'll get it right.

3:40Joe Johnson:He told the report, I'm glad. Okay, okay, okay, Cam. Hey, hey, hey. A little chippy, boy. Don't let him punk you, boy. Huh? You know you want to play well. He's supposed to be a Titan, so he's supposed to support the Titans, man.

3:56Shannon Sharpe:Nah, see, that's the problem. They done got the game messed up, Ocho. Yeah. They got to realize the reporters aren't fans. No, never have been. They have a job to do. Exactly. And sometimes, somehow, it's gotten confused when reporters do their jobs. His job is to critique and analyze. He's like, okay, from his analysis, he hadn't played well.

4:20Shannon Sharpe:Reporter, how would you assess your play this preseason? How would you assess it? Not well. You don't think so? I'm glad you don't think so. He, Ocho, he hasn't played well. He hasn't.

4:35Joe Johnson:Yeah. He hasn't. Yeah, but it's preseason, Unc. How much are we putting into preseason? Okay. Wait, wait, wait, wait. The small amount of plays you do get as a starting quarterback in the preseason where everything is really vanilla, there's nothing scripted, there's nothing scheme, I would take that with a grain of salt in general. Now, with the small stuff you have gotten, Unc and Joe, okay, it hasn't looked good. It hasn't looked good. Brian Dayball, he has his work cut out for him. He has his work cut out for him. So, obviously, whatever you need to do, you take what you've seen in the preseason, You implement it in practice, and hopefully come week one, in two weeks, we come out and we see a better Cam Ward.

5:12Joe Johnson:Cam Ward had some ups and downs last year. Number one pick, he had some ups and downs. Towards the end of the season, Uncle Joe, boy, he played well. He played really well. So I'm hoping he can build on that going into the season this year. But when it comes to the preseason, eh, you know, you want to see improvement. You want to see improvement and consistency. But when it doesn't go well the way we think it should, when he gets, what, nine snaps, seven snaps, and say, oh, without those seven, you didn't play well? I don't know. Maybe you understand where I'm coming from. Maybe not. Ocho, it's simple.

5:46Shannon Sharpe:Did he play well? Right. The guy says, I don't think you played well. You know what? I didn't play as well as I would like to play. I know I need to play better in order for us to win. Boom.

5:59Shannon Sharpe:If it's vanilla, it's vanilla for everybody. Yes, sir. And he hadn't played well when it's vanilla. So what's going to happen when it gets more complicated? When we start adding flavors? When we start swirling it up? Then what are we going to do, Ocho?

6:12Joe Johnson:Yeah.

6:13Shannon Sharpe:So then when we say you haven't played well, what are you going to say then?

6:17Joe Johnson:Well, I'll wait until the season to get here. But that's one of the goddamn problems in general is the goddamn reporters worried about how the fuck we look in the preseason. Shit don't mean nothing. No disrespect, huh? Not you, my joke. Hey, they got to mean a little something, Ocho. It don't mean nothing, man. It don't mean nothing. Nothing at all? I'm just saying. I mean them, baby. Listen to me. I'm going to be honest with you. This preseason don't mean shit. It don't mean nothing. Hold on. I'm telling from somebody that played at a very high level that enjoyed being in the preseason to get ready for the regular season.

6:47Joe Johnson:It means nothing. I respect that. I'm talking about the real game day when I'm out there facing them real dogs, the real number ones. To me, I mean, to me, honk, you might feel a little different. I'm just saying me. I feel very different. Hey, I'm getting a little emotional. I'm just saying this is how I feel. I really don't care about the five or six snaps I get in the preseason and a reporter judging me based off that. That's just me. But as a quarterback, maybe he should feel a little different. So I like your answer. I like your answer and what he should have said, but that's not the way he's built.

7:21Shannon Sharpe:Ocho, a reporter has never asked you how did you play today, how did the offense play? A reporter has never asked you that in your 10, 11-year NFL career. Yeah, absolutely. So why would he ask you that?

7:32Joe Johnson:Why is he worried about how you playing? Yeah, but I'd be the first one to say, boy, I play bad. Yo! But I'm built like that. Well, maybe he should be built like that. Because it's the preseason. It's the preseason. I'm taking that with a grain of salt, especially the number one quarterback, my starter. He's my guy anyway. Yes, but don't you want your starter to play a little better, JoJo? I mean, we can go across the board about some of the stars that didn't look good. I mean, name one. Huh?

8:06Shannon Sharpe:Name one.

8:07Joe Johnson:In the preseason?

8:07Shannon Sharpe:Yes. Of the quarterbacks that's played, name one. Damn. Taking you that long?

8:17Joe Johnson:I'm trying to remember all the preseason games.

8:19Shannon Sharpe:Okay.

8:23Shannon Sharpe:You ain't going to be able to find one, Ocho.

8:26Joe Johnson:Mm-mm. And I see somebody. Ocho. And he did.

8:29Shannon Sharpe:Even though the way he came on late in the season, he didn't play well overall last year. Even when you factor in him playing better at the end.

8:37Joe Johnson:That's what I just said. I say it was some ups and downs. As any rookie quarterback coming into a situation in Tennessee where there ain't really nothing out there to work with now, there's a reason why he went number one.

8:51Shannon Sharpe:Yes.

8:51Joe Johnson:There's a reason why he went number one because there ain't much out there. So that means he has to come in and be almost damn near perfect because there's nothing out there. Talk to me.

8:59Shannon Sharpe:While you're saying there ain't nothing to work with, what you think those receivers thinking? Tell me what you think his receivers thinking. While he's saying I ain't got nothing to work with, what you think his receivers thinking?

9:08Joe Johnson:No, I'm not talking about the receivers. I'm saying the totality of the team, which is why he was able to get the number one pick.

9:13Shannon Sharpe:I think the defense is pretty good. If their offense can stay on the field and not turn the ball over. Turn the ball over, yeah. Yeah, most definitely. Most definitely. Hey, Tate probably still ain't scoring. He probably still ain't caught a damn ball all preseason. Joe, them boys ain't even playing that many plays. I want y 'all here a rookie, bro.

Read the full transcript

9:31Joe Johnson:You cannot do that. You cannot sit here and say, oh, my goodness, they played five, six plays. Oh, you're not playing well. No. I need to see a full game. I need me. Week one. Listen, Tennessee. When Tennessee plays and we come on here Sunday, Sunday night, 11, 12 o 'clock, whatever it is, then we can have a true assessment on how the quarterback look, how the receivers look. but this preseason and people in the chats about preseason matters, no, the fuck it don't. It don't. It tells you nothing. Nothing at all. Because I just gave you an example, the goddamn Detroit line going 4-0 in the preseason and going 0-16 when the season started.

10:13Shannon Sharpe:Can I ask, can you find a quote when they ask Mendoza about his play and his answer? Tells you a lot. Two different people. Two different people. Yeah, and I saw, you know who the last person I saw you is?

10:30Joe Johnson:Hold on, wait, are you comparing Cam Ward? Look at Cam Ward and look at Fernando Mendoza. That's not even a fair comparison. And they will never ask or answer questions alike.

10:41Shannon Sharpe:Besides race, what's the difference?

10:44Joe Johnson:They will never, are you listening to me? Yes. Listen to me very closely. They will never, ever answer questions alike. Ever. They never will. They're not the same. The only thing, wait, listen. The only thing comparable between Cam Ward and Fernando Mendoza is the fact that they are NFL quarterbacks. That's it. They don't conduct themselves in any manner alike. And that's including answering questions. I don't want, why would I want Cam Ward to be like Fernando Mendoza?

11:13Shannon Sharpe:For what? That's not him. The same reason I wanted Ryan Leach to be like Peyton Manning. But he handled it just like this guy handled it. And what happened? So you're saying Cam Ward's going to beat Ryan Leaf

11:24Joe Johnson:because he's not answering questions the right way? I don't know what's going to happen, but I know he has a disorder. Wait, wait, wait. So if you answer questions like Peyton Manning,

11:29Shannon Sharpe:you're going to turn out to be Peyton Manning? Look at the way Dak Prescott answered questions. Look at Jalen Hurst the way they answer questions. Look at certain guys, Lamar Jackson, the way they answer questions. Yes, I wanted to act like that. Hold on.

11:42Joe Johnson:So answering questions is going to result in productivity on the field.

11:46Shannon Sharpe:That's what I'm saying. That behavior. You taking offense when somebody asks you to assess your play? He's human. He can take offense. He's a player. What are we talking about? It's the preseason. Why is he taking offense if it doesn't matter?

12:01Joe Johnson:If it's the preseason, why is he asking the dumbass question? I can't go. That's what I want to do. Why is he asking the dumbass question?

12:06Shannon Sharpe:Why is he taking offense if it's the preseason? It doesn't matter.

12:10Joe Johnson:Who said he was taking offense? He said, oh, it's okay. Well, good. I'm glad you think so. I'm glad you think so.

12:16Shannon Sharpe:So you think that's an answer? So that's not the answer that somebody took offense to what he said? I'm asking you a simple question. This ain't got nothing to do with Cam Ward. This is you and I. You don't think that's a response elicit somebody taking offense to what the reporter asked him? Yes or no? Well, no. If you ask me a stupid question, I'm going to give you a stupid answer. How is this? Oh, Cho! Chat! Y 'all got to help me. How is that a stupid question? Ask him to assess your play. I don't think you played well. How is that stupid?

12:42Joe Johnson:If he said, I don't think you played well. He said well, that's cool That's that's your answer. That's how you feel. Okay cool. No next question Would you want to sit there and agree with him? Oh, you know what? Yeah, you're right. I didn't play well No, all you have to do it.

13:00Shannon Sharpe:That's how you feel I need to know how about I need to play Everybody does not have to get those fucking PC ass answers We'll have this we'll have another conversation. I guarantee you we'll have a conversation about cam war and I don't want to hear nothing about this. Oh, this don't matter. This is only his second year. I'm not going to let you give those excuses.

13:17Joe Johnson:No, no, no, no. I ain't trying to hear it. What we're not going to do is allow the media to goddamn control us and the narrative and how we support the talk. The media ain't got nothing to do with how

13:24Shannon Sharpe:he played. So who's fault was he played bad last year? Was that the media's fault or his fault? What rookie quarterback has coming and plays all world?

13:32Joe Johnson:Let me hear this. Whoa, whoa, whoa. I don't worry about other rookies.

13:37Shannon Sharpe:You told me don't worry about how other quarterbacks answer

13:41Joe Johnson:No, let's stay on the topic. He played bad last year as a number one pick, right? The first pick in the draft. What quarterback has been the number one pick and played well their first year? I'll wait.

13:53Shannon Sharpe:I mean, what you call him did pretty good. Drake may play pretty good. What quarterback played? You told me don't worry about how other quarterbacks played. That's what you tell me. Don't worry about how to answer questions. You said worry about me right here. So I'm just trying to figure out, I need somebody to help me. Chad, help me understand. How would you assess your play in the preseason? Cam Ward, how would you assess it? Not well. You don't think so? I'm glad you don't think so. Joe, what is so out of line about that question? That's a great thing.

14:29Joe Johnson:You don't think so? I'm glad you don't. Boom. That's a statement in itself. You know what that says? I'm glad you don't think I played well. and I'm going to show you. I don't need to give no PC where you know what you're right. Man, fuck all that. I didn't say, you didn't have to say.

14:47Shannon Sharpe:How about you saying, I know I need to play better.

14:51Joe Johnson:Why do you want him to be a robot and that's not him? How is he a robot? You're telling him he's answering the question in a certain way that does not predict who he is. That's not him. He's not Fernando Mendoza. He's not Peyton Manning. He's not Tom Brady. All their answers are PC and robotic. What about, so every quarterback is robotic?

15:09Shannon Sharpe:No, not really. Not really. So name the quarterback that's been like this. Like what? Name the quarterback that's answered a question like what he responded to. How many quarterbacks have reported asking that exact question? I don't know.

15:28Joe Johnson:It's a thousand quarterbacks. In order to compare the answers, what reporter is asking their starting quarterback questions like this? They ask this every Sunday. I've never seen it. I've never seen it.

15:42Shannon Sharpe:I've never seen it. I know this man ain't just saying. I know this man ain't just saying. He have never heard or seen a reporter ask a quarterback about his play on a given Sunday. I know Ocho didn't say that.

15:56Joe Johnson:We talk about preseason, ain't we? We talk about preseason. I ain't never seen nobody. I ain't never seen nobody coming in and ask no quarterback. Nothing about no preseason. I have. Of course. Let me see. It's three preseason games. Cam Ward probably played what? 12 goddamn snaps. Are you talking about assessing that? What are we talking about, man?

16:15Shannon Sharpe:I don't care if I'm out there for two snaps. I'm trying to put my best foot forward. I don't know about how he'll do it. So you don't think he's trying to put his best foot forward? Yeah. I don't know what he's trying to do. Hold on. I know what he didn't do.

16:27Joe Johnson:I'm trying to ask. Is he trying to make mistakes? I don't know. Is he trying to miss passes? I don't know.

16:34Shannon Sharpe:I don't think he go ahead Joe hey look he ain't trying he ain't trying to do none of that what you saying Ocho but I think what I'm saying is the accountability part it's like bro if you if you got you got to hold yourself to a high standard Ocho you know what I mean the man was the number one pick yeah I know it's preseason but hell he got some new weapons out there man you want to have some good drives bro we just seen a lot of quarterbacks in the preseason Ocho who done really showed that you know they ready to take the next step I ain't think it was a bad question, bro. But it's hard. I don't know if that was practice or after a game when emotions are high like that.

17:10Shannon Sharpe:Hey, man, this is what you're going to get from young guys because they ain't used to that constructive criticism like that. Man. Fernando Mendoza learned on what he's, after completing his first training camp, the NFL is really tough. There's a big jump going from college to the NFL. The NFL is a tough business and it's a challenge. I look forward to taking it head on with my teammates.

17:30Joe Johnson:Mm. Yeah, that's real cute. Same dumbass politically robotic answer they teach you to say. I ain't trying to hear that shit, man. We all know the jump is tough from college to the NFL. Duh. No, that's not what you said. Hold on. He's saying all the right things. Same old, same old, same old, same old, same rhetoric we hear from every quarterback. It's the same scripted shit.

17:59Shannon Sharpe:Because you know why? Because the quarterbacks go to the same damn school. They get schooled the same damn way. And I know two guys have handled it very poorly. One is Anthony Richardson Jr., a senior, and the other one was Cam Ward the way he handled this question. Why are you calling out the black quarterback? What are you trying to say? All I'm saying is I know two guys have handled it. What did Anthony Richardson say? Did he or did he not say the NFL was easy? Yes or no? Hold on. Did he say yes or no?

18:31Joe Johnson:So Fernando Mendoza's going to have success because he's answering questions, right? I don't know what he's going to have. Hold on, no, no, no, no. I want you to, I want to make sure that this horse we're sitting on for Fernando Mendoza because he's answering questions, right? When it's his time to start and he get motherfucking slaughtered out there, I want this same, I want to come back to the same question to show that answering questions has nothing to do with your play on the field.

18:51Shannon Sharpe:The point is not whether he gets slaughtered, it's that he takes accountability when it happens. That's the point I'm making. See, you're trying to make it up. No, no, no. Hold on. I'll listen to you. Hold on just a second. Just a second. I'm going to give you the flow back. I'm going to give you the flow back. Does that make it okay because he answered the question the right way? Does that make it okay? See, what you're trying to do, see, you're trying to say because he answered the question the wrong way has something to do with his play. I'm saying, and I think what Joe is saying, is that you accept accountability when you don't play well.

19:26Shannon Sharpe:That's it. accountability in a yes yes yes

19:37Shannon Sharpe:get off your chest bro

19:42Shannon Sharpe:well we talk about the preseason still I'm playing my absolute best every time because every time I step on that damn field is a reflection of Shannon Bofo Sharp Forget the name on the front of the jersey. I'm talking about the name on the back of the jersey. That's what I represent. Every time I step on the field, preseason, regular season, playoff, one play, 50 plays. I play the same way every time. And when I don't play well, I'm mad enough to stand to the podium. Just like when he goes out there and throws four touchdowns, I'm mad enough to go out there. When I don't play well, say, I didn't play well today.

20:21Shannon Sharpe:And that's not good enough. You know what?

20:24Joe Johnson:I'm glad we're here. It's been a real long time since we ever had a conversation like this where we disagreed. No, you're laughing, boy. I think the last time we got like this, Joe, I think, what, was it the Bud Crawford picking and choosing a box or something like this?

20:42Shannon Sharpe:Yeah.

20:43Joe Johnson:Joe, it's been a long time, boy, and I'm feeling good. Hey, this nigga got me hot. Hey, Chad, he got me hot. You over there sweating?

20:55Shannon Sharpe:Hey, Ash, well, we ain't having one like this in a minute, boy. Joe, I got to go to the bathroom. Joe, talk to him. Joe, talk to him, Joe.

21:04Joe Johnson:Hey, Joe. Hey. Hey, Joe. That's my guy, boy. He got me mad as hell, boy. Hey.

21:11Shannon Sharpe:Hey, hey, hey. You pissed off about that preseason so far.

21:15Joe Johnson:Hey, Chatter, I tell you no lie. Chatter, I love y 'all. I know some of y 'all probably don't agree with me, but I'm just telling you how I feel. Maybe it's the way I conduct myself. maybe the way I view the preseason even though I enjoyed the preseason but I won't do as I won't allow a reporter to tell me the small amount of plays that I've gotten in the preseason it's justifiable with my play that it's not enough plays being played Joe the the plays the plays and the scheme that we're running everything is so vanilla it is kind of almost it's almost unfair and and also Joe being at the team the practice and having the joint practice and they've seen everything multiple times Joe so it's really not fair to me So maybe things don't look the same or he's not having success.

21:56Joe Johnson:He would like to have. Oh, boy. Oh, boy. Boy, I'm hot. Hold on. Hold on, Joe. Stay with me. Hey, hey, hey. Hold up, though. I'm hot, boy.

22:08Shannon Sharpe:Hey, Ocho. Nah, it's serious business, though. You don't feel like it's – I understand it's preseason, but a little bit of accountability, bro. I think, you know, from a fan's perspective, we enjoy that more. Like, if you ain't played great or you ain't played well, man, I get it. Preseason, but damn, this is just your second year in the league, bro. We're trying to build on something. You know what I'm saying? If you Tennessee, I just felt like, you know, him getting slick with the reporter, man, that comes from being young, bro.

22:40Joe Johnson:Yeah, that too. Obviously, he's going to have some growing pains as a young quarterback coming in. But I kind of see what Uncle's saying, but I also see the other side of things. Would it not only be in the preseason and Cam trying to improve and build on what he did last year, but justifying and critiquing him based on the small amount of snaps he's getting in the preseason to me is unjustifiable and it's almost unfair. Can I ask you a question, Ochoa?

23:06Shannon Sharpe:Take your time, Monk. Take your time. You think that reporter at practice? But practice don't matter either, though, so.

23:20Shannon Sharpe:Practice don't matter, Joe, so hey, guess what? The preseason don't matter. The Pro Bowl didn't matter. The All-Star game didn't matter. Nah, all that matter. Of course it does. I'm trying to put my best foot forward. I'm a representation every time I step on the field. Ocho did it too. If it didn't matter, Ocho, why Marvin had to call time out to get your ass out the field in the preseason game if it didn't matter? Oh, I wasn't coming out of the game. No, no, no, it don't matter. It don't matter. I want to come out of the game. Whoa, whoa, chat. Hold on, hold on. Hold on. No, no, no, Ocho. No, no.

23:54Shannon Sharpe:I went to the bathroom. He got him a thought. Chat, Ocho said preseason didn't matter. But he wanted to take all the reps. He said one time Marvin had to call a timeout to get him off the field. But preseason doesn't matter. I need you to pick a side. It matters or it doesn't.

24:13Joe Johnson:Hold on. Can I speak? Yes, you can. Go ahead. Joe, and Joe, I'm going to address you because I don't know. The only reason I played in the preseason, it wasn't about putting up numbers. It wasn't about catching balls. Joe, for me, it was to get acclimated to the game speed again. I could practice 100 times, Joe. I get in the game. The game speed is completely different for me. Now, I'm not sure how it is for anyone else. For me, that's it. Hold on.

24:38Shannon Sharpe:But Ocho, in order for you, you said it mattered, right? Does preseason matter? Yes or no? Huh? Does preseason matter? Yes or no? The result in the preseason? No. Does the preseason matter? I ain't nobody say nothing about no results. Does preseason matter? Yes or no? No. Okay. So why are you trying to take all the refs then? Me?

25:09Joe Johnson:Yes, you. I like football.

25:11Shannon Sharpe:No, no, no, no, no, no, no. That's not what you just said. I can play back. I can have the stenographer play back what you said. You said because you need to get acclimated to the speed of the game. Therefore, preseason was important.

25:23Joe Johnson:Hey, can I say something else too, Unc? No further questions, Your Honor. Hey, Joe. Hey, Joe. You know what I like to do in the preseason too? I like to try new stuff to see if it works. So, it, Mac. Unc, Joe. Chad. Huh? Is I getting punked right now? No, no, you're not getting punked. I'm just saying. You want a camera in here? Hey, Unc. Hey, hey, hey. Joe, we getting punked. Listen to me.

25:49Shannon Sharpe:Nah, he just wanted a little argument tonight.

25:51Joe Johnson:I'm not trying to argue. I'm just saying the preseason matters. But these wins and loss, whether you win or lose, does it affect your record in any way? Huh? I'm asking you, Joe. In the preseason, does it affect your wins, your wins or your losses? No. Nah, it don't affect your wins and losses. It's all about you individually working on your stuff. You try to put your best foot forward, you know, obviously. You know, everybody uses the preseason for different reasons. I'm getting pulled. I'm getting told what I use it for. Now, did it matter? No. I was just trying to work on stuff. So what does that matter?

26:26Joe Johnson:Oh, my God. Ocho. You can't do that. You can't do that. What's that? Hey, Unc. Unc, listen to me. You hear me? Yes, I'm listening. Let's say I didn't play in the preseason. Come week one, you know I'm still going to go off. You know that, right? I'm still going to be able to execute and dice people up the same way, whether I played in the preseason or not. No, it didn't matter. I'm just saying it's me. If you didn't play in the preseason, you were still going to be Shannon Sharp come week one. Even if you didn't, you still was going to be that boy.

27:01Shannon Sharpe:Ocho, but the fact of the matter is that when you step on the field, you've got to be willing to take accountability when things don't go well. Whether it's the preseason, the regular season, the postseason, it doesn't matter. My thing was you said you wanted to work on things so you was using the preseason to work on things that you was going to use in the regular season therefore one would say preseason matters that's all and when things don't go well you have to be mad enough to stand before take this microphone and stand there and say you know what I need to be better we've got to be better that won't get it done that's all

27:40Joe Johnson:Yeah, you're right. The little folk plays they get in the preseason ain't going to get it done. Yes! You're right.

27:45Shannon Sharpe:Ocho, but again, I'm going to ask you again. Do you think that reporter is at practice?

27:53Joe Johnson:Is he? I don't know. Probably. Hey, the reporters, they're at practice at the beginning of the practice, right? In the preseason, they're there the whole time. Oh. So what you trying to say? He trying to say he's been practicing bad too? I don't know what he's trying to say.

28:08Shannon Sharpe:He just asked a question.

28:09Joe Johnson:I mean, it seems like you're implying the question might have been because you'd be playing bad in practice too.

28:14Shannon Sharpe:I'm just saying.

28:15Joe Johnson:Now that's another conversation.

28:17Shannon Sharpe:No, no, no, no, no, no. No, that's not. I didn't make any implications. All I asked was do you believe he's there for an extended period of time for practices or this was an isolated situation where he just saw the preseason games? Hey.

28:38Hey.

28:40Joe Johnson:players are different now. You know, it's not like when we played, you know, they ain't finna sit up there with all that accountability and all that saying all the right stuff. They just not. But Ocho, that's what we complain. We talk about that, Ocho. The guys are not accountable enough. I'm with you when you're right. I'm with you when you're right. You know, and listen, you know this era. They're a little bit more sensitive now, Joe. You say something they don't like, they'll snap on you. You know? So you gotta understand who you're dealing with, too. So times are different, you know? And I just want to apologize for raising my voice, man.

29:10Joe Johnson:Chad, I apologize. You know, aren't God the best of me tonight? It's been a long time.

29:14Shannon Sharpe:I get the best of you. Look, I just, look, I know when you're ready to have a fight, I know what subject that you're ready to have a fight in.

29:24Joe Johnson:Football. Football and boxing. Especially if it's something I believe in, too.

29:32Shannon Sharpe:You want players to be themselves. Bingo. And the thing is, there are times and places that you can't. You got to use, as a quarterback, you and I, we could have said anything. We don't get judged. We don't get critiqued as harsh as the quarterback. You know that. Yeah. I'm sure there are some times that Carson wanted to go off about some things that happened in the game. Even Keough, always. That guy of all people has to be that. Yeah. You and I, we rising and falling with the balls we catch and the balls we don't catch. Pause.

30:14Shannon Sharpe:Football. We talking for the year. You know what I'm saying, Joe? You see what I'm saying? Yeah, he held a wheel, dog. Didn't catch the latest Roland Martin Unfiltered podcast? 35:25Shannon Sharpe:The Steelers are trading OT Roderick Jones and his 2027 fourth round pick to the Cowboys in exchange for a 2027 third and sixth round pick. Drafted 14 overall by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2023, Jones served as a Steelers starting left tackle during the 2025 season before season ending neck surgery in week 11 against the Bears cut it short. Even before the injury, Broderick had given up six sacks and 23 pressures in 25. This came after 24 in which he gave up 11 sacks in 17 games. Joe, how do you feel about them signing a sack-alonging specialist? Hey, chill out, chill out, chill out, chill out.

36:05Shannon Sharpe:Look, look, Jones, look, I seen Jones play at Georgia. He a Georgia boy, huh? Uh-huh. You know, a two-time champion, two-time college football champion in Georgia. I think he can move people. You know, I think he recently, like you said, he just had, what, spinal surgery or something? He had a neck, hurt his neck. Yeah, I watched him play. His biggest downfall, I think, is just his inconsistency. He's very athletic. He's a very athletic guy who can really move. Decent run blocker. Good in pass protection. He's young, man. Just three years of NFL experience. He ain't been like 24, 25. Uncle Ocho, I think he still has some upside.

36:44Shannon Sharpe:But the inconsistencies, bro, we got to nip them in the bud right now. Because, hell, we already got to look at it. What is it saying more than anything? It's probably letting you know that, hell, they don't trust Steele. Yeah. Yeah, I've been told you that. Yeah, they don't trust him because he's been inconsistent as well. So, man, listen, he going to have to get it together, bro. We going to need that blocking now. It's a scorching sports summer, and you can make all your picks on prize picks. 38:27Shannon Sharpe:Miles Garrett looking at this chop. He said he don't care who y 'all got there. Him and Fisk and Jones. What's the other thing? They got another D tackle that be getting at the folks, too. I forget his name. But, ooh. Them boys serious. I ain't going to lie. Them boys serious. Them boys serious. But, man, the Steelers and the Cowboys have been doing a lot of trade lately. Ain't it, man? They've been doing a lot of trade. Jerry done found him a part of the dance with him. He's like, okay, let's go back here and dance again. Yeah, yeah. But, hey, if – I will give Jerry credit this year. I think he's going above and beyond.

39:08Shannon Sharpe:He's still out there trying to make sure this team has what it takes, has everything it needs to get to where he know. Jerry know he ain't. I can't be dilly-dallying around. I want to be in a situation where I win. I want to hold that Lombardi trophy one more time. Before he check out. One more time, and I'm going to let Steven, and I'm going to let Jerry Jr., I'm going to let Charlotte, I'm going to let y 'all run it. But I got to touch it one more time. I got to be on that stage and have Roger Goodell hand me that trophy one more time. He got a good chance. I think we got a solid defense that's definitely improved.

39:46Shannon Sharpe:I think they're going to be a lot better this year. We know offensively how high power we are. Don't you act like that. What's wrong with you, man? It ain't going to happen. Come on, man. Stop that. Don't do that. Don't do that. Don't do that. Don't do that. Look, hey, hey, the last thing y 'all want is for them Cowboys to be kicking some ASS. I know y 'all don't want that. I know y 'all don't want that. Y 'all probably going to want 13-4.

40:07Joe Johnson:Y 'all going to have a phenomenal regular season like always. That's not the problem. It's not you kicking ass in the regular season, Joe. It's when you get to the postseason.

40:17Shannon Sharpe:Well, we got to start somewhere. Okay, Ocho, if we kick ass in the regular season, cool. Then we're worried about the playoff when we get to it. We can't worry about that right now. Okay. Okay.

40:27Joe Johnson:See?

40:27Shannon Sharpe:My bad. My bad, Turbo.

40:37Shannon Sharpe:That's all. That's all. I just want the playoffs to roll around and then y 'all do what y 'all do you know what y 'all do and what the Ravens do when the playoffs get here now it's whoa now we talk about the Cowboys we're talking about the Ravens a later date in time right now is the date and time to talk about the Cowboys hey listen y 'all got us bit this year I'm just letting y 'all know and I'm front and center with it every night. Yeah. Front and center. The good, the bad, and the ugly. I'm supporting you, Joe.

41:14Joe Johnson:Offensively, I'm supporting you. You know, it's still up in there on the defense. Now, we don't know what the defense is going to look like even with, even with, you know, the pickups y 'all done made, you know, the draft, you know. So, we're going to see. I know what you got. I know what them boys on the outside going to do. Boy, that CDN pick. Woo!

41:32Shannon Sharpe:Hey, hey, me and you got to bet, though, for who got the best record. at the Bengals and the Cowboys. You remember that? You ain't pay me the$500 you owe me. Because we put that behind us. We done put that behind us. We moving forward. How are we going to put it behind us you ain't pay me yet, Joe? We done discussed. It was too bad. It was too lopsided. I didn't feel like I had to pay you, bro. I thought we were good on that.

41:55Shannon Sharpe:I thought we moving forward, bro. New season. New season, new me, new you.

42:02Joe Johnson:$500, Joe. Come on, man. That ain't nothing, boy. You live on a property. You can't give me$500?

42:09Shannon Sharpe:You know what? You want me to tell you what happened? When we got on here that night, the way you were gloating and all that, it just pissed me off. And I was like, you know what? I ain't even paying his ass. Okay. Yeah. Hey, Joe. He had me so hot. He was so happy. You could see nothing but his damn teeth. I said, you know what? Damn, I ain't paying his ass. He's waiting. That's why I don't like betting guys till I bet. That ain't even your team.

42:39Joe Johnson:It's all good. It's cool. Hey, Joe, I got some more stuff for you, man. I'm going to wait till later on in the show, man, till it get good. I'm going to show you some new stuff, man. You and your old lady can try it at home, man.

42:55Shannon Sharpe:Oh, no. We talked about it. Hold on, Joe.

42:58Joe Johnson:I know y 'all probably talked about it, but this is a little bit more lenient, so I think you're kind of, you know, I'll wait until we get through the rest of the segment. I think you'll like it, though, Joe. Damn. Don't knock it till you try it, man. All right. Hey, hey, hey. All right. All right. Man, put my baby out. Baby, hey, if you watching, baby, come down here, man. Grab that stuff from me, man, so we can show Joe.

43:23Shannon Sharpe:So you can show Chad and Unk and Joe.

43:26Joe Johnson:My bad. Well, I was just trying to focus on you. I was trying to focus on you, Joe, but, you know.

43:30Shannon Sharpe:Nah, nah, nah. It's a man. We got 20 ,000 people in the chat, man. Well, we got 20 ,000 people watching?

43:37Joe Johnson:On a Saturday? We just chilling. You know what I mean? Hey, Chet, I want to thank y 'all. I really can't see the chat right now. I appreciate y 'all. Thank you. Because there's so many other things you could be doing on a Saturday night. But y 'all here with us. You hear me? Hey, from me to you, here. Huh? Here. High five. High five. Yeah. Yeah.

44:02Joe Johnson:I love y 'all, man. Matter of fact, I love y 'all so much, I'm gonna give you my phone number. Call me, 786. Write this down. I don't care. Just call me. 786-685-8585. Whoever texts me first. I love y 'all, man. I think, you know, outside of the chat, we need to be a little bit more friendly. I want to feel like we family for real, man.

44:39Shannon Sharpe:Another Dolphins player is on the move. The Guppies are trading Quinn Ewers to the Jacksonville Jags. The two teams will swap day three picks in 2028 to complete the deal. Joe, are you surprised the Dolphins are giving up on Ewers so quickly? Ewers need to be happy, bro. I'm just keeping it real. I had a win the last time. Miami ain't developed no damn quarterbacks over the last some odd year, man. Listen, let that man go. Where did he end up going to, Uncle Ojo? The Jags. Yeah.

45:12Joe Johnson:Oh, he got a secret. He's going to be third string, huh? He's not backing up Trevor Lawrence. I know they got a number two over there already.

45:20Shannon Sharpe:Maybe. I was trying to look and see who the Jags had and their quarterback. Yeah, he ain't going to play no time soon. Absolutely not. That ain't happening.

45:32Joe Johnson:But no, I'm not surprised.

45:34Shannon Sharpe:They got Trevor Lawrence and Joey Aguilar. I think he played at Tennessee.

45:39Joe Johnson:Aguilar? Yeah.

45:44Joe Johnson:So wait, if they let Huers go.

45:49Shannon Sharpe:I guess they like your guy. Don't you got Zach Wilson? Zach Wilson played Miami?

45:54Joe Johnson:Zach is in New Orleans, remember?

45:56Shannon Sharpe:He done moved on to New Orleans, okay. So who in Miami now?

46:00Joe Johnson:I don't know who the number two is. I know Malik Willis is a starter.

46:03Shannon Sharpe:Yeah.

46:11Shannon Sharpe:Man, I'm up here putting guppies in there and wondering why Google won't shoot me nothing.

46:17Joe Johnson:You got to respect my dog.

46:23Joe Johnson:Cam Miller.

46:24Shannon Sharpe:Okay, Cam Miller.

46:25Joe Johnson:Who that is?

46:28Shannon Sharpe:A backup. And then Mark Gronkowski. I don't know him.

46:37Joe Johnson:You think he related to Gronk?

46:40Shannon Sharpe:I doubt it.

46:46Shannon Sharpe:I doubt it. Because I think the thing is, look, if I can trade a guy that I'm going to release and get some level of compensation, a seventh-round pick who you never know. Get lucky. Give me a day three pick. I'll take it.

47:03Joe Johnson:You might find you a gym.

47:06Shannon Sharpe:You might? A little diamond in the rough.

47:08Joe Johnson:Every blue moon, sometimes you hit now. I know one thing.

47:13Shannon Sharpe:I'm sorry, Joe. Because I was trying to put guppies in here and wonder why they wouldn't put you on me nothing.

47:19Joe Johnson:I mean, we the same guppies that put 70 on your team, ain't it? Didn't we put 70 on the Bronco?

47:25Shannon Sharpe:Joe, what you say? That's old news. Y 'all done blew y 'all team up. Y 'all team done got blown completely.

47:32Joe Johnson:I know, but listen, I don't have any expectations this year because I understand that the Dolphins are in a rebuild. I'm talking about a complete rebuild, a complete overhaul. I understand that. Hey, Joe, it's going to be a rough year. I can't even talk trash. I can't even. If we have games where we happen to win, that's awesome. That's a great thing. It's a great thing because we rebuilding.

47:55Shannon Sharpe:Man, they ain't trying to win. Hell, you know they want that number one pick.

47:58Joe Johnson:If we get the number one pick, I can tell you who we're going to get. Who?

48:01Shannon Sharpe:I already know. Yeah. He from now. Yeah.

48:04Joe Johnson:Yeah.

48:04Shannon Sharpe:Yeah.

48:05Joe Johnson:I already know. I know they're going to get that boy. Hey, Jeremiah Smith, I know you're going to see this, boy. Yeah. Get ready. Come on, boy. Hey, get ready. Come on, huh?

48:15Shannon Sharpe:They call y 'all feeder. Common guppies are feeders. They feed guppies to other fish, Joe. Yeah.

48:21Joe Johnson:Oh, man. Let me see if we got the Broncos on the schedule this year, man, because you're doing all. Y 'all, you better move. You better move. Hey, you're doing a whole lot of stuff. You better hope the Broncos don't lose a game. Hey, hey, do we play the Dolphins? The Cowboys? I'm going to tell you. I'm going to tell you right now.

48:40Shannon Sharpe:Why show ho so, boy? We need a confidence builder now.

48:43Joe Johnson:Now, Joe, we've been doing it all show, Joe.

48:47Shannon Sharpe:I just keep it real, Joe. Ain't that like when you look on the schedule, you be like, ooh, man. We got to go. That's a dub right there. Hey, Joe, I be looking at that. I said, oh, yeah, that's about 10 for$1.40 and two touchdowns right there. That's the kind of game you look at? That's how y 'all feel? Ocho, you already know y 'all some trash.

49:08Joe Johnson:Okay, okay. What? But Cowboys, Joe, y 'all lucky, Joe.

49:18Shannon Sharpe:What do you mean we lucky?

49:19Joe Johnson:Y 'all ain't got to see us. Damn. Boy, I show a whole week. We want that easy win.

49:24Shannon Sharpe:Everybody looking at y 'all, Joe.

49:26Joe Johnson:Week five was they play the Bengals. I'm going to have to be on the fence on that one. Where they playing at?

49:35Shannon Sharpe:You ain't going to be on no damn fence. You bullet for the Bengals.

49:39Joe Johnson:They play in Miami October 11th. Oh, I know you're going to that. It's a 1 o 'clock game. I will be there. I will be there, man. I need that.

49:51Shannon Sharpe:Chase probably thinking like, man, that's a 20-catch game for me. Damn. Then throw us a little party after the game.

50:00Joe Johnson:Yeah. Sometimes you look at the schedule and it looks so easy. You try to mark off games you can win. Boy, it is.

50:08Shannon Sharpe:The guppies is an easy game. You mark it off as a win. Y 'all feed a fish. You know what guppies are. They feed a fish. They feed guppies.

50:17Joe Johnson:You gave them that name. They're dolphins. Dolphins are the ones that eat the guppies.

50:30Shannon Sharpe:Hey, don't we play the Cup? Is it December?

50:33Joe Johnson:Who? The Broncos? Nah, y 'all not on here? Oh, yeah, yeah. 12-6. Where we play? Y 'all play? We play out there? In Denver. December 6th.

50:45Shannon Sharpe:Boy, we gonna beat the Broncos.

50:48Joe Johnson:You won't bet nothing. We gonna beat the dog.

50:54Shannon Sharpe:Boy, we got the boys. We got I think week three. The Cowboys? We got the Ravens. You know good well y 'all the Broncos. You already know that. I'm going to tell you I know that's your team. I don't know when we play the Broncos. The last time y 'all beat the Broncos, Joe, you might have been about two years old. You talking about that old stuff again. Y 'all ain't beat As long as you've been allowed to know football, y 'all ain't beat. The last time y 'all beat us, y 'all beat us in 95. That ain't the last time. You trying to tell me that's the last time the Cowboys beat the Broncos? Ain't no way.

51:36Shannon Sharpe:The last time. 95. Ain't no way. Hey, that's the last time. Go back and look it up. 95. That's a long time ago, boy. Man, man, you don't want to exaggerate. Ever since then, we done beat the brakes off, y 'all. Peyton beat y 'all. Yeah, the Bronx beat y 'all. A Teddy Bridgewater beat y 'all. Bo Nix beat y 'all. Yeah, y 'all ain't beat us since 95. Y 'all ain't missing New Year's ghetto, huh? He already know. Y 'all ain't never beat the Ravens, I don't think.

52:11Shannon Sharpe:Yes, I'm right. Y 'all ain't beat us since... Damn, Joe. Ash, Ash, you should have kept it to yourself, man. You shouldn't even get it. You should let his mind wander, ass. My mind wasn't, I know. That's why I told you. Last time y 'all beat us, it was in 95. You ain't lying, boy. It sure said on Google, too. September 10th, 95. Damn. Yes. But that's old, though. I told y 'all, if it ain't happened yesterday, I don't really remember. If we'd have played y 'all yesterday, if we'd have played y 'all today, we'd have beat y 'all today, too.

52:47Shannon Sharpe:We'd have beat y 'all today, too. Only thing is we didn't play, y 'all. Damn.

52:57Shannon Sharpe:Wait, did you? Oh, you know what? That was, you know what? That was Joe. You know what? That was Lamar's rookie year. Joe Flacco probably played. I don't count that.

53:13Joe Johnson:You ain't going to count Super Bowl champ, MVP, Joe Flacco? Okay.

53:19Shannon Sharpe:Because what you call it should have gotten that award? Jacoby.

53:23Joe Johnson:Oh, yeah. He cut up in that Super Bowl. Did he not cut up? He cut up in that Super Bowl.

53:29Shannon Sharpe:Kick return for a touchdown. Passing for a touchdown. Reception for a touchdown. But no, no. Flacco was sensational. That whole playoff run. He was on fire. He beat Andrew Luck. He beat Peyton Manning. He beat Tom Brady. And he beat Colin Kaepernick. I mean, it would have been hard-pressed to find somebody that had a better run than that. 58:49Shannon Sharpe:Postseason. And Kaepernick was playing out of his mind. He was playing out of his mind. But to go on the road, to go on the road and beat Peyton Manning and Tom Brady.

59:04Shannon Sharpe:He did a hell of a job. He did a hell of a job. The Dolphins head coach Jeff Happley says he won't measure the team's success this season by wins and losses. Listen to what this man says.

59:16Joe Johnson:I ask for this. Let me say this. We and I want to win everything that we do. But success is not just defined by winning. Winning for sure, right? That's why we play the game. And I think every competitor wants to win in everything that we do. But it's kind of like what I was just talking about before. we're going to compete I want to win everything that we do I've said that over and over but at the same time we need to make sure that this foundation and the process is built the right way and like I was saying that there's no shortcuts because it's bigger than that right now and those are the things that are really important is we move this thing forward and we build and we find out who we have, what we have because we want to get back on top and to do that you got to go through some hard stuff with competing in mind to win in everything that we do, but keeping the main thing, our process in the detail and the toughness and not taking any shortcuts and not flinching along the way, regardless of what happens.

1:00:20So at the end of the year, we can look back and say, this foundation is strong and we're not going away.

1:00:28Joe Johnson:So basically, in short, he's saying we don't have enough to compete, let alone win.

1:00:34Shannon Sharpe:you'll look back on the season and say we suck we suck last year we suck the year before that we suck the year before that we've been sucking a long time and we're gonna be continue to suck for a long time okay hey he said foundation process with great understanding that i don't

1:00:52Joe Johnson:have what it takes right now to compete i don't i i just don't he knows that we're in a rebuild stage, he can't say some of those things. So he's saying it in cryptic format. I understand it. His hands are tied behind his back because he don't have much to work with. Joe, when a man

1:01:12Shannon Sharpe:did all that talking and they mentioned nothing about winning, that lets you know right there your team suck. He trying to get some more victories.

1:01:25Shannon Sharpe:How many times do you hear him say, like I said before? Hey, he knows he has a long season.

1:01:30Joe Johnson:The one thing I did hear you say before about winning. He knows he has a long season. I think Dolphins fans, we understand we have a long season. Anybody on the outside looking in that knows the game of football understands that Dolphins are going to have a long season. They're going to have some upsets. They're going to have some games that they went on that they shouldn't have won. It's going to happen.

1:01:49Shannon Sharpe:No, they ain't. No, they ain't. Them folk might win two games. Thank you. Two. I give y 'all two, Ojo. with$170, what,$9 million in dead cap? Man, all them dudes y 'all peeing around, man. That ain't on your team. That ain't even on your team, bro.

1:02:06Joe Johnson:Hey, that's part of, you know.

1:02:10Shannon Sharpe:Gambling. That's part of gambling. That's what they do.

1:02:13Joe Johnson:Hey, we reupholstering. Damn. Y 'all just uber. I know. It sucks for you. No, it don't suck. I understand. I see the vision long term. I'm not tripping.

1:02:25Shannon Sharpe:I see division long term

1:02:27Joe Johnson:we gonna be alright

1:02:28Shannon Sharpe:I can't see that with the Hubble telescope in the Hubble telescope I can see craters

1:02:32Joe Johnson:on the moon

1:02:33Shannon Sharpe:I can see the rings around Saturn

1:02:38Joe Johnson:I can see the mountains in Jupiter give it another year or two we'll see who laughing I will still be here laughing y 'all not gonna be good in a year or two we gonna dominate the AFC East boy so where's Josh Allen going He's going to be there, but we're going to dominate them. So what about Drake May? Where he going? We're definitely going to dominate them. We're definitely going to dominate them. Now, the Jets, they're going to be at the bottom of the barrel. It's going to be a three-team competing in the AFC East. You hear me?

1:03:08Shannon Sharpe:Y 'all fighting. Y 'all two crabs in the barrel. Y 'all in the Jets. Y 'all crabs in the barrel.

1:03:21Shannon Sharpe:I just don't see it, Ocho. But hey, bless his heart. He'll head coach. You know he has his work cut out for him. Their best players, they're all gone.

1:03:32Shannon Sharpe:So we'll see how that work out for him. It don't look promising.

1:03:37Joe Johnson:We got some solid receivers, man. All they got to do is make plays. All they got to do is make plays, Joe. What about defense? We decent. We decent. We decent. You know? Joe. We decent.

1:03:53Shannon Sharpe:My grandma used to say, boy, today don't look good and tomorrow don't look too much better.

1:03:57Joe Johnson:Hey, Joe, we decent. I'm telling you, we're going to surprise a few teams now, Joe.

1:04:01Shannon Sharpe:No, they're not, Joe. No, they're not for the surprise. You're going to surprise you don't get beat by more than what you got beat by.

1:04:08Joe Johnson:Remember this conversation we had not before the season started.

1:04:14Shannon Sharpe:Write it down. Take a picture. I don't know.

1:04:46Shannon Sharpe:Asked miss Donald can Aaron come out and play well. It could respond it I let him out the house y 'all and there it is and with that simple tweet Here's the staff for you since double teams started being tracked in 2017 Only three players have recorded 20 sacks of the season two of them are now on the Rams Aaron Donald and Miles Garrett TJ watt miles Garrett had 23 sacks TJ white had 22 and a half sacks and Aaron Donald had 20 and a five But look at the sack look at the double team rate he got 20 and a half sacks being double teamed 64 percent of the time that's crazy basically two thirds of the time he's getting double teamed listen to be able to come back out of retirement

1:05:28Joe Johnson:for one to leave arguably maybe depending on who you ask the best divas a player to ever play this game i know we have you know we have lawrence taylor we have some others but the fact that you can be double teamed 64 percent of the time and still do what you're doing with that amount on the sacks. He played defensive tackle. We talk about defensive tackle, Joe. We're not talking about an end who sometimes, you know, if they have to scheme you, they can double team you and scheme you. If you play DN, sometimes they leave them one-on-one. But to be at the nine, three, that's not the nine, to be at the three and still be able to dominate like that, always taking on two people majority of the time is insane.

1:06:06Shannon Sharpe:It's insane. They're not going to let him play one-on-one with a guard. They're always going to slide the center towards him. If you listen at Jason Kelce and how he talked, and he was talking about, AD was talking about, hey man, let me have someone say, nah, that's not going to happen. You'll wreck our entire offense. You have to, there are guys in this league, and they've always been that way, that you have to find a way to account for. You go in on Wednesday, Aaron Donald's number is circle. Miles Garrett's number is circle. Because if you don't block those guys, they wreck your offense, and they're making you have a long, long day.

1:06:40Shannon Sharpe:Now you got to deal with both of them. Go ahead, Ocho.

1:06:43Joe Johnson:hey joe and i listen i saw aaron donnell coming i used the kanye meme where kanye smiles and then he has a frown immediately because in a sense i like it for the game of football aaron donnell coming back and giving themselves a chance obviously he's only coming out coming coming back for one reason an opportunity to lift a lombardi trophy again now i'm thinking offensively for the teams that have to play the lost the lost analyst rams how do you defend how do you i mean how do you how do you counter that because you can't you can't double both nope because you're hamper your offense, you'll handicap your offense.

1:07:14Joe Johnson:What do you do? You double Miles? I mean, I'm curious to hear your expertise because I've been thinking about it all day. How are teams going to deal with that?

1:07:23Shannon Sharpe:You're going to have to pick your poison. You're going to have to pick your poison. I think the wild part for me, Ocho, is that he's coming back joining Miles Garrett, the reigning defensive player of the year who just set the NFL single season sack record. I think that's the most intriguing part for me because it's like if Miles Garrett wasn't there, do y 'all think he would have came back? Understanding, understanding now, look, it ain't going to be a whole hell of a lot of pressure on me. I got Miles Garrett on the end. I'm going to hold everything down on the inside. And if they doubling me on the inside, hell, who going to be guarding Garrett on the outside?

1:07:57Shannon Sharpe:One man ain't going to stop him. No. I think we know and understand that. So I think Aaron Donald's seen the opportunity, bro. He's seen the opportunity. He's like, look, this thing going to be back in L.A. for the Super Bowl. Man, let's see what we got. I mean, it's Super Bowl or bust. on your Ocho? Yeah, absolutely. Is that every year for the Rams? Because they go for it. John Snyder has always said, no, is that the,

1:08:23is that the,

1:08:26Shannon Sharpe:if, if, if, I forget, less need, less need, less need. He's always had, he's always had the macho, F them picks. And think about what he's done, Ocho. Look at him free agency, what they did. They went and revamped their secondary because they felt that was the weak part of their defense. Then they make the trade for Myles Garrett. Then on top of that, AD's like, hold on, wait a minute. He probably started huddling up with his wife, Erica. Hey, what you think if I want to go back for just one year? I know you kind of like having me around. I kind of like being around. But for one year, the Super Bowl is in L.A.

1:09:04Shannon Sharpe:Myles Garrett, Trent McDuffie, Jalen Watson. and myself, Miles, they got Fisk, they got Byron Young, they got the other, I forget the other D tackle. He's a hell raiser also. They can go six deep. They got a NASCAR package now. When you got the preeminent three technique in all of football, he might be the greatest three technique. I don't think he is. I don't think it. You know, when you think about Warren Sapp, you think about Johnny Randall, you think about Mean Joe Green, some of the Allen Pages, some of the other great three techniques, It's hard to say any of them are better than Aaron Donald.

1:09:40Shannon Sharpe:So set that aside. He's a top two, top three, and I'm not saying he's two or three. And now you got Miles Garrett, the preeminent defensive player in all of football. You can make a case. He's better at his position than anybody else is at their position. Yes. That being said, with the cornerbacks and with the offensive firepower they got, they got Puka Nakua. Now, I don't know if Puka's going to be able to start the season. We're going to see how that plays out because we know some things. We don't have to revisit it, but we know some of the things that happened in the offseason early. Matthew Stafford, Puka, Devontae Adams, Kyron Williams.

1:10:17Shannon Sharpe:They're loaded. But to answer y 'all question, how do you do it? You run them out of it. They want to pin their ears back, Ocho, and come attack your quarterback. If you cannot run the ball on them, you cannot beat the Rams. You have got to make them catch. You have got to make them stay out of those sprinter stands.

1:10:37Joe Johnson:But hold on, Unc. I like that you said that. Now, we talk about Miles Garrett being one of the better pass wrestlers in the NFL. This is not just on throwing downs. This is also on rundowns. Him being able to sit, him being able to hold the edge. He's really good at that as well, despite having the sacks. Aaron Donald, how you running the ball? Which way you going? A gap, B gap?

1:10:58Shannon Sharpe:I mean, what are you doing? This is what I know. guys that get 20 plus sacks they're not as good at the run as they are passing because you get them in matter because think about it what was so amazing about miles garrett last year is that they were playing from behind he was still able to get those sacks because they were able to shut the run off you've got to find a way somehow ocho and even if you don't have success early you've got to find a way to stay committed to it because if you fall behind this team 10 14 points and you can't run the football? And you look at Colby Turner, Aaron Donald, Brandon Fisk, Byron Young.

1:11:32Shannon Sharpe:You got Nate Landmine played unbelievable. And you got Miles Garrett. And you got Jalen Watson. You got Trent McDuffie, Quentin Lake, Cam Curl. They are loaded. And if you look at their second year, Puna Ford, Tyler Davis. They got a team. If they can stay healthy, that's all. Your health is going to be the biggest key for them because we know looking at their roster, they're talented. We look at their coaching staff. We know they have a top-flight coaching staff, training staff. Can they stay healthy for 22 weeks? That is the question. If they stay healthy for 22 weeks, whew. But we find out early, Ocho, because one team, Seattle plays on Thursday, and guess what?

1:12:18Shannon Sharpe:That Friday, they take on San Francisco, a division rival. you know how division rivals are they know them we know the youth because guess what Sean McVay was with Kyle Shanahan so they know each other in and out very well hey I can tell

1:12:36Joe Johnson:you even though they know each other in and out that the offenses are so high powered I'm looking for a 20 20 20 30 30 some game I'm talking about from both teams I'm talking about from both teams obviously they're going to be able to score as great as good as the defenses are they're still going to be able to put up points because it's such a it's such a pass happy league i think it's going to come down to when they do play who has the ball last you go who has the ball last ain't

1:12:59Shannon Sharpe:nobody blowing nobody out i think the thing when we look at it you look at teams that that have how power offenses or more importantly defenses that get after the quarterback you must run the football that was always our philosophy keep staying stay out of long down and distance ocho staying third and manageable, second and manageable. You don't want to fall behind the sticks. You don't want them to get a bead on what you're doing. If they can get a bead on what you're doing, you're in for a long night. Teams are going to try to establish the run. You'll see early on, watch Kyle Shanahan, how committed he is to running the football because he knows he cannot fall behind those sticks.

1:13:37Shannon Sharpe:He cannot be in long, down, and distance. And if he can do that, they have a great chance to spring this upset.

1:13:43Joe Johnson:Yeah, and not only running, and too, when it comes to passing, I'm going quick game all day long I'm going quick game and if I do have to run that I'm doing misdirection I'm not running directly right down the mouth the teeth of the defense get him going one way and bring him back the other anything to stop they feet

1:14:02Shannon Sharpe:and who runs more play action than the 49ers you know they play action centric heavy fake handoff fake 19 handoff fake 18 handoff that's the staple of their offense. And Christian McCaffrey is somebody that can do some of everything. Don't be surprised if they try to find a matchup with him. Put him out in the slot. Let him get matched up with a safety or the middle linebacker, the wheel linebacker. Kyle Shanahan is going to find a mismatch. I ain't fooling around. I know I'm not fooling around too much trying to dilly-dally with that defensive line, especially that front seven. But if I can find a mismatch, and this is why you have a, you know, you spend a second-round draft pick to go get a Christian McCaffrey because he's so versatile and he can do so, so many things.

1:14:54Shannon Sharpe:Joe, you back? You got everything situated now? Yeah, we gooch over here. My bad, Chad. Okay, okay. Yeah. Yeah. No, but Ocho and I was saying, I think the thing is that when we played a defense that could get after the quarterback, we made a conscious effort to run the football. We had to stay in manageable down and distance. We had to be third and short. We had to be second and short. You start falling behind the sticks. You're third and long. You're second and long. Now they get a B. They know you got to pass the football. Now they got great back in because that was one of the first things that they addressed in fridge.

1:15:26Shannon Sharpe:They went and got Trent McDuffie. They traded for Trent McDuffie and they made him the highest paid corner at the time of the signing. And then they go get Jalen Watson, who paired with him, who played really well, had a look down year last year. But we know he's very agile, a lengthy corner. and they says, okay, hey, Cleveland, man, y 'all ain't going to ever go nowhere, man. Get up off Miles, man. What y 'all trying to do? Yeah. Hey, I mean, we'd be willing to make us an offer we can't refuse. Yeah. Well, at first they wanted to offer Byron Young. That would have been illegal. Ain't no way you're going to have Miles Garrett, Jared Burst, and Aaron Donald?

1:16:05Shannon Sharpe:Ooh.

1:16:08Shannon Sharpe:They said, give us Jared Burst and two first-rounders. Ah, man. See, I got to play, I got to play court, Ocho. I got to make sure I don't, I got to make sure I don't think I don't want to do this. I'm like, oh, damn it. Right, right, right. Oh, no, let me think about this. Give me, give me, give us an hour or so to think about it. Oh, my God. Hey, we'll call you back. Ocho, they'll, they'll do it. Everybody, everybody, in the room. We about to get. They say, hey, yo, you know, you can't, you can't, you can't, hey. hey, you see the board, hey, you see the flop come. I got a royal flush. Oh, man.

1:16:50Shannon Sharpe:So now I got a ponder, Joe. I got a ponder. Lord, have mercy. Yeah. Let me check this thing. Yeah. Everybody jumping out there because they might have, hey, they might have a flush. They might have, you know, they might have a full, a boat. Yeah. Mm-mm. Yeah. And lo and behold, they pull it off. But me, Ocho and I was talking about this for the longest time, Joe. And I told Ocho, I said, And Ocho, I ain't going to lie to you. I think Miles Garrett is the best defensive player in football. But I would trade him. And Ocho looked at me like, are you serious? I said, Ocho, you finish in the last place with a guy that's getting you 20 sacks.

1:17:23Shannon Sharpe:You can finish in that position without him. Miles Garrett, you're not in Miles Garrett away. If you are miles Garrett away from the Super Bowl, the Rams believe they're a miles Garrett away from the Super Bowl. Cleveland are miles away. Not M-I-L-E-S. Miles away. not M-Y-L-E-S, miles apart. That is the difference. Go ahead, Joe. I don't think, listen, the fact that we're talking about Aaron Donald coming back, he don't have to be the old Aaron Donald. Okay, old Joe. You know, at 35, playing 80 snaps, I think, give me the most dangerous 40 to 50 snaps a night of Aaron Donald. I'm saying compared to like a NBA superstar, a guy like LeBron James.

1:18:10Shannon Sharpe:LeBron ain't going to play no damn 40 minutes a night. But, boy, he going to give you a hell of an effective 30, 32 minutes a night, maybe 35 minutes to where they're very effective and they somewhat putting an imprint on the game. He just going to be – it's going to be unfair, bro. With him and Miles Garrett on that defensive line, man, boy, if you're a quarterback or an offensive lineman, your ass better get some sleep the night before, boy. You got some work cut out for you. What?

1:18:35Joe Johnson:And the fact that they had depth at the position, too, and they can rotate. Keep them from, man.

1:18:42Shannon Sharpe:Hey, hey, and then, okay, Ocho, think about this. Two years off. He had two years off, so that could probably possibly help him considering the fact that he don't have an extra two years of wear and tear on the body, bro. Even though he 35, everybody talking about his age, hell, he probably going to be out there moving like he 31, 32. Yeah. Absolutely, yeah. I think he'll be just fine. He'll be just fine. It's going to take him a while. Because the thing is that he's been away, the instinct is going to take, you're going to have to play Ocho and Joe to get those instincts back, to get those fighting senses tingling.

1:19:14Shannon Sharpe:Because, you know, hey, it takes you a while even when you come back in the offseason. Because you haven't been out there running against guys and helmets and guys trying to peel your cap. So now all of a sudden, you have to put yourself in that environment to understand what it takes. So he might get cracked the first time, but you won't crack him again. Hello. Yeah, he might, oh, that wham block, that wham block might get him the first time. But he knows. He's going to be able to see when that guy's sitting heavy, when that guy's sitting light, when that guy's, oh, yeah, we got a flyer. Hey, we got a flyer.

1:19:49Joe Johnson:Hey, you know what he's going to? He's going to pick the fish now. Oh, yeah. He's going to pick the fish.

1:19:55Shannon Sharpe:That's what you do. That's what you do. You find the weakness. The thing is, they used to move him up and down the line. They'll play him at a wide nine. They'll play him at a seven. They'll put him at a five. They'll put him at a shade, which is a three. They'll put him over the number. they'll play him anywhere. Now, you got Miles Garrett, who also can move up and down the line. Just imagine if you put both of them guys over the guard, Ocho.

1:20:17Joe Johnson:Hey, you got to think about the multitude of ways that they use Miles Garrett in Cleveland. They had him roaming around. They had him like he was playing linebacker. He's sitting, hold on, he's sitting in the A-gap. He's doing the, remember when he was doing the... Yeah, he did the dribble.

1:20:30Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, he in and out

1:20:31Joe Johnson:with it. He in and out, man, he's doing all kind of stuff, man. So, I I mean, having players like that allows you to do so much defensively. And it reminds me of the Steelers and the Ravens of the early 2000s, where you guys ran all these different exotic coverages, and they could do stuff that other teams couldn't do because of the personnel that they had. It allows you to do more when you have players like that. You can take chances on the back end because of them. So, I mean, it's dope, and it would be the perfect NFL storybook ending for to come back one year and hope you get another championship right in your own backyard in LA.

1:21:10Shannon Sharpe:I don't think there's nothing more movie script than this here, considering the fact that the Super Bowl is back in LA. In LA. He won the first one. What? Come on, man. That's crazy. Hey, hey, hey. That's crazy. The only thing is, I think it's going to get derailed by them Cowboys. I'm just saying. I don't think so. Now we all just signed that right tackle y 'all signed from Pittsburgh. I sure hope he's getting the play. Hey, hold on. He back up. He back up. What you mean? You do realize it's not like Terrence Steele is with you. You absolutely right. I understand the inconsistency on that part on offensive tackle.

1:21:44Shannon Sharpe:Listen, but here we got to make some room for improvement. But boy, listen, we, I don't want, I ain't want to see this. I ain't going to lie to you. I ain't want to see Aaron Donald. I mean, hell dealing with Miles Garrett going to be more than enough. You hear me? Oh yeah. Miles Garrett. Guess what now? Oh Joe. for the most part, all his home games, he's never going to have to worry about inclement weather. He ain't got to worry about no snow. He ain't got to worry about no rain. He ain't got to worry about no blistering cold. He ain't got to worry about nothing. Because guess what? I don't know if they're the home team this year, so they might have nine games at home in that dome.

1:22:19Shannon Sharpe:And plus another, not me, excuse me, eight games, nine games, plus one in Arizona. So that's 10 games of your 17. Good weather. Good weather. Hold on. Australia is going to be nice to start the season. So now that's 11 of my 17 games in an ideal situation. And that's the one thing you don't want to pass. You want to pass Russia to A. It's raining. He's slipping all over the place. It's cold. He can't get his footing. You let a guy like that, he's able to play on solid footing. It's going to be nice. If they can stay healthy. That's it, Ochojo. Joe, if they can stay healthy, you got your damn hands full.

1:23:01Shannon Sharpe:You got more than that, boy. Who the Rams open up with again? The Rams open up with the 49ers in Australia. Man.

1:23:12Joe Johnson:That's going to be a good one.

1:23:14Shannon Sharpe:On Friday, because we know we got the Patriots in Seattle on Thursday and then Friday. On Thursday. And then basically you got college football season starts Saturday coming. So everybody's going to be playing by the end. I can't wait. It's about to get real, real interesting. Yes, sir. The thing is, it's like you had to have a good sense that Miles Garrett was coming back. Because when you hear a guy start talking about retirement, you might as well go ahead and retire. If you start talking about coming back, you might as well come on back. He mentioned that he had been gearing up for this for the last 13, 14 weeks.

1:23:51Shannon Sharpe:Obviously, he didn't want to do no training camp. He don't want to put any more wear and tear on his body that he has to. And so he was doing things necessary in order to prepare his body to withstand the rigors of what it's going to take for him to go through an NFL season. I agree with you, Joe. He ain't going to play nowhere near the 60, 65 snaps that normally required of him. He'd probably be somewhere down in the mid to high 30s. Yeah. That's what I do with him. I'm not, hey, don't worry. I want you fresh. Come fourth quarter, I want Miles Garrett like, hey, I can take the whole fourth. I can take the whole fourth quarter.

1:24:29Shannon Sharpe:Because that's what you do, Joe. You know what you're saying? You give that guy that long rest. So the last four or five minutes of the game, I mean, the last four or five minutes of the third quarter, you let him rest. Yeah. Bro, you got to bring it home now. You got to bring it home. But on another note, Arcan Ocho, even if he isn't producing like double-digit sacks, offensive coordinators still have to account for him. You know what I mean? Like, it don't matter. Let's say he don't come out and be sack crazy. Hell, I bet they still be doubling him. For sure. Hell, yeah. That's the funny thing.

1:25:03Joe Johnson:He's going to be able to affect the impact games without getting the sacks. Now, if he does get the sacks, that's a cherry on top. But it's the fact that you still got to account for him any time he's on the field. Now you got two people that are just as good. You got to account for both.

1:25:17Shannon Sharpe:Hey, boy, it's going to be a hell of a season, boy. But I think the thing is, when you look at them and you look at what they have defensively, when you got Miles Garrett and you got a Kobe Turner and you got a Brandon Fisk and you got a Byron Young, boy, you got some dogs. You got some guys that, hey, as Wade Phillips used to, as Wade told me when we are there in the Super Bowl, he said, I'm going to turn them loose. He said, I got Vaughn, I got D-Ware, I got Malik Jackson, I got Wolf, I got that secondary. I just tell him go hunt the quarterback. Yep. That's what you do. Go hunt the quarterback, son.

1:25:53Shannon Sharpe:As a matter of fact, find the running back on your way to the quarterback. Hey, I want you to hunt. Hey, hit him too. Hit him too. I want you. I want the quarterback. Al Davis' famous word said the quarterback must go down, and he must go down hard, and it needs to happen within the first two series of the game. Yeah. now you can't put the quarterback down like they used to put the quarterback down because remember now on show you get three of those flags that they told you about you get

1:26:23Joe Johnson:suspended again yeah yeah come on so come on sit at home and watch the game from home and hey and

1:26:29Shannon Sharpe:consider the kind of money that miles garrett making miles like nah i'm good i'm just gonna go ahead and sling you down hey you'll be okay you you really want to make it mad just wrap him

1:26:39Joe Johnson:up and just hold him there. Just hold him.

1:26:42Shannon Sharpe:And like Jalen Carter had the, who'd he have? He picked up somebody and just held him. And held up one hand in there like this here.

1:26:52Joe Johnson:It's amazing where the game is now. It's amazing as opposed to where it used to be.

1:26:57Shannon Sharpe:They took the physicality out of it, Ocho.

1:27:00Joe Johnson:There's no way to intimidate your opponent. Especially if you play defense. There's no way.

1:27:04Shannon Sharpe:No, no, no. You can't. You can't. But see, the essence of what football really was, was about intimidation. Because how else can I move a man against his will? I got to put this man in fear of his life. You might catch it on your, okay, yeah. You came across the middle of the first quarter, came across again in the second. We got something for that ass in the third and the fourth, though. because back then see now you can't if the ball if the ball gets batted or the ball if the ball is short they still used to be able to knock hell out the receiver Joe you can't do that now that's a flag yeah hey let that ball get tipped if you want to let that ball come up short if you want to they did not care

1:27:58Joe Johnson:gotta have a head on the swivel boy

1:28:01Shannon Sharpe:so now that's why you see all these receivers brave. Everybody catching the ball one hand like Michael George. They're catching the ball one hand across the field. Damn! You think about it. Ocho, you might go two, three weeks before you saw a receiver catch the ball with one hand. You see at least three to four one-handed catches a week now. A week. Every game. Every game. Now, it's hard for me to be impressed with a one-handed catch because I see them all the time. You used to be really impressed when you saw Chris Carter make a one-handed catch or you saw one of these receivers make a one-handed catch.

1:28:42Shannon Sharpe:Now you get guys, just guys making one-handed catch because there's no fear of going across the middle. Hell, no fear of getting hit, really. No, nothing, nothing. The defensive receiver, the guy pulls up. Man, they used to look ugly. Shallow cross, linebacker would hunt you up. If you're not looking like you're running because you said man's on and that quarterback not making looking, Coach Belichick had a famous saying, look, if you can't cover him, knock his ass down. Yep, and you know you can do that within that five-yard range anyway. It's hard for you to run around on the ground, Joe. Especially if you're looking up through your ear hole.

1:29:25Shannon Sharpe:Like, who did that? Who hit me?

1:29:31Shannon Sharpe:Oh, them some good days. Hey, they made a man out. Hey, those days put hair on your chest, Ocho. Oh, we. They put hair on your chest, Joe, because you go around, hey, all that talking, like guys be talking now, you had to be really, really special to say, because not anybody would just talk, say something, because they know they protected. Yeah, back then, they going to hunt your ass, wasn't they? What?

1:29:55Joe Johnson:Oh, yeah. Joe. Joe, I'm not saying there was a bounty out for you, boy, but my mouth, man. Joe. What? I can imagine, Ocho. I can imagine. I enjoyed every minute of it, Joe. Please, I need you angry. I need you upset. I need you playing with aggression because all you're going to do, you're going to mess up.

1:30:17Shannon Sharpe:Okay, the first game, Ocho, the Patriots Seattle, they play Wednesday. Oh, wait, this Wednesday coming?

1:30:26Joe Johnson:next week we got a whole nother week we got a whole nother week okay okay okay then that thursday

1:30:32Shannon Sharpe:because normally the game was on thursday but because netflix has this game which is uh uh 7 35 p.m netflix hey hey hold on hold on y 'all football trying to cut into the damn basketball y 'all got football on wednesday night y 'all had third we got y 'all thursday i told i told you joe Y 'all might as well forget about it. Y 'all might as well forget. Christmas Day, y 'all can forget about that. Oh, we going to be battling. We going to forget about nothing. We going to be battling, huh? Yeah, we going to be battling. We going to be battling. Hell, we going to be game for game. Yeah. But y 'all going to do 3 million views, and they going to do 33 million views.

1:31:11Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, we going to be battling. You better not ever, ever, ever let the Cowboys play on Christmas. It's over. The Cowboys gonna have three or four of the biggest games regardless. Oh, yeah. So, yeah. Once the NFL found out, like, hold on. They like to get up and watch football. They love football.
