(4) Guest interview: Von Miller signs with the Dallas Cowboys.
Guests (and backgrounds)
Von Miller, eight-time Pro Bowler, three-time first-team All-Pro, two-time Super Bowl champion, Super Bowl 50 MVP, 2011 Defensive Rookie of the Year; former Broncos and Rams/other teams; Texas A&M (ag/poultry background). Hosts include Joe (Ocho) and others; they discuss NFL strategy and injuries.
Key claims
Grass is “more giving” than turf; turf helps stadium revenue due to concerts/events. Donald’s double-team rate cited as 64.5% vs. Miles Garrett’s ~34–35%. Browns will likely start Shedeur at least for an opportunity despite Watson’s $46M salary and guarantees.
Notable examples
Injury list tied to turf/grass (ACL/Achilles examples like Aaron Rodgers, Nick Bosa, etc.). Donald return timing via Sean McVay comments. Von Miller says he can win “10 to 13 plays” and still produce sacks; references his 9-sack 2023 season.

2:45All right,
2:46Shannon Sharpe:guys, here it is. Vikings linebacker Jamal Adams suffered a season-ended knee injury yesterday game in the preseason, which reignited grass versus turf. The national soccer teams played at MetLife Stadium grass for the World Cup all summer, but it returned to turf. In 2025, Malik Nabors tore his ACL. In 2023, Jalen Phillips tore his Achilles. Aaron Rodgers tore his Achilles in 2023. Kyle Fuller tore his ACL in 2022. Sterling Shepard tore his ACL in 2022. Wandel Robinson, torn ACL, 2022. 49ers, Nick Bosa, torn ACL, 2020. 49ers, Dee Lyman, Solomon Thomas, torn ACL, 2020. All on turf? Is there a difference playing on grass versus turf, Ocho?
3:33Joe Johnson:Hey, I'm the wrong one to ask. I'm the wrong one to ask because I haven't had any issues. And obviously, you look at all the names that you just named that have had injuries on turf, but you can also do the same thing for people that have tore their ACL that had the same injury on grass. You can do the same thing. Obviously, I don't have it in front of me. I don't have the numbers or the names of people that have been injured and tore their ACL. For some that you do ask, a lot of people say, yes, there's a difference. They prefer grass. Some people do. I was one of the few players where it didn't matter, Joe.
4:03Joe Johnson:You know what I mean? Listen, we playing on turf, we playing on grass, and I enjoy the turf. Why do I enjoy the turf? Because I understand even if it's raining, I'm still going to be able to run full speed and transition and stop on a dime. I'm just telling you how I feel. I'm Joe, I swear for God. I was okay with that. I had no problem playing on grass. You play in Arizona, that Bermuda grass was unbelievable. When I played in Houston, that Bermuda grass was unbelievable. It was dope, Joe. Yeah. You didn't even know. So I didn't really care what I was playing on because I enjoyed either surface.
4:36Joe Johnson:Joe, my black ass was playing in a pair of Chuck Taylors yesterday, going full speed. So you know I don't care nothing about no surface. Yeah, you was tripping. I care.
4:45Shannon Sharpe:I want grass, Joe.
4:46Joe Johnson:Yeah, so depending on who you ask, there are certain people that care. If you ask some of the players that they, yes, they prefer to play on grass.
4:52Chad Johnson:Hey, hold on, hold on.
4:53Joe Johnson:I don't care.
4:54Chad Johnson:But what's the biggest difference in playing on grass and turf?
4:58Shannon Sharpe:Grass is more giving.
5:00Chad Johnson:Oh, okay.
5:01Shannon Sharpe:Grass is more giving.
5:02Chad Johnson:That turf ain't giving, eh?
5:04Shannon Sharpe:Nah. Even in the field turf, they say it's like grass. Nah, I don't want nothing that's like. I want what it is.
5:12Chad Johnson:Hey, hold on. Oh, it tastes like chicken.
5:14Shannon Sharpe:No, I want chicken.
5:15Chad Johnson:Hey, hey, so on that turf, is that how y 'all get them big cherries on your arms and legs and all that?
5:21Shannon Sharpe:Yes. Yes. Yeah, no. And they hurt, too. You don't realize you get them until you got to get that shot. Until you hit that shower. Until that water hits you. Hey, matter of fact.
5:36Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, but look, I think the thing is, is that I understand the players want grass. But a lot of these stadiums are multi-use. They got concerts. They got other football games. They got track to pools and they got rodeos and all kinds of things going on in there. So it's just hard. It's just too hard. It's just too hard. Go ahead, Ocho.
5:59Joe Johnson:I'm going to say, Joe, and people in the chat that are listening, this is also what makes it hard for a team that obviously won't grasp. If you get into the late season and you got cold weather, You got to deal with the cold weather and being able to maintain the feel as well, because it's going to be it's going to be messed up. It's going to get bad. It's hard to take care of a grass field. If you play somewhere like Cleveland, you play somewhere like New York.
6:23Chad Johnson:Yeah. Yeah.
6:24Joe Johnson:Stuff like that. I mean, it's really bad. So having turf and also from a business aspect, being able to have other events there as well. We don't take it. Yeah.
6:36Shannon Sharpe:So to have to have a to have a concert. You know, a Jay-Z or a Beyonce to sell that concert out. Oh, you see Shane Gillis, he had a concert in Philly Stadium. Yeah. What is it, Lincoln Field, Lincoln Financial? I think that's the name of the field. 73, 70-plus thousand at a comedy event. Right. And then you got tractor-truck pulled, Bigfoot coming in there. They're jumping over big old mountains of dirt. Yeah. And you got bull riding. I mean, so you got so many things. That stadium got to pay for itself. And owners are like, bro, how can I speed up the process of paying for this? They have bowl games in there.
7:17Shannon Sharpe:Sometimes they have a stadium, they freeze part of it over, and they have a hockey game in the Ocho. So it's a lot going on that I understand. And everybody say, oh, you say that. But when you run a business and you're trying to keep costs down?
7:35Joe Johnson:matter of fact there have been a few injuries if I'm not mistaken early in training camps and everybody in training camp right now is on grass there have been some ACL injuries haven't there if I'm not mistaken if you have somebody go back if you have somebody the same way you just did and went down the injuries where people got hurt on turf you can do the same thing but there ain't a whole lot of people that actually play on turf
8:01Shannon Sharpe:I mean, play on grass. There's a whole lot of teams. They're probably less than, probably out of 32, probably less than five, if that many.
8:09Joe Johnson:Play on turf. Play on grass, natural grass. Arizona, Las Vegas, Houston. Those are the only three I know, unless they change it so far.
8:18Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, I don't know if Denver is grass still, because they used to have, it used to be mainly grass with some synthetic sown in. So I don't really know now. I didn't really pay that much of attention when I was down there. I didn't even think, didn't really dawn on me, but hopefully these guys, hopefully Jamal has a speedy recovery and he comes back. But boy, ooh, damn. Hey, what he heard again?
8:43Chad Johnson:What he heard again?
8:45Shannon Sharpe:The knee. That's crazy, man. For the second time this summer, Aaron Donald was listed today as working out for the Rams on the NFL transaction wire. Sean McVay told reporters yesterday, I'm hopeful that it will be sooner than later, but I also want to respect when he does feel like the clarity will come. I think there's a chance that it will be closer to that than not. But again, I don't want to say too much and put some sort of invisible deadline on something that doesn't exist in my mind for him.
9:17Chad Johnson:He coming back. I don't know. I think he trying to still get his footing, see how he really feel after a couple weeks of practice, to see how that body responds. Y 'all know how that is, man. Oh, yeah. You know, it's a different. You're going to have to get out there in the pads,
9:31Shannon Sharpe:put the pads on and do some of that, aha, aha, aha. Yeah, I'm saying,
9:36Chad Johnson:you know, it's a difference when you're in that weight room every day and you throwing that weight around, you making love to that weight versus you getting out there on that damn field and you having to bump and grind with some guys. You know what I'm saying? You don't know how your body going to respond.
9:48Joe Johnson:Yeah, and the funny thing about it, too, we talk about Aaron Donald. We talk about Aaron Donald. I'm not sure what the percentage is, but he has a high rate percentage of having to face a double team. So as much weight as you've been lifting, you done took two years off. Now you're going back into that Lions den. It ain't like you're just dealing with one person.
Read the full transcript
10:04Shannon Sharpe:When he had 20 sacks, Ocho, when he had 20 and a half sacks, he faced a double team 64 and a half percent of the snaps.
10:10Joe Johnson:Oh, Joe, you don't understand how crazy.
10:12Shannon Sharpe:That's crazy. For perspective, I think Miles Garrett faced a double team about 34, 35 percent of the time. So with both of them, it ain't going to double both of them.
10:25Chad Johnson:huh yeah you can't double both of them here no so what i'm gonna eat hey listen you got to pick your poison yeah so if i'm aaron down here i i wouldn't mind coming back neither hell if i got if i got big boy on the end what and i know you got a double you got a double one of us you probably ain't gonna double me because that boy that day hey man all things being equal aaron donald's
10:49Shannon Sharpe:closer to the quarterback see that three technique he's the closest to the quarterback yeah he That's why he get double so much. And normally it's the center because you line up in the tilt on the guard. Center going to slide toward him.
11:04Chad Johnson:And you mean, tell me, they going to play Miles Garrett single coverage?
11:10Joe Johnson:Man, I don't know what they're going to do, boy. Honestly, honestly.
11:16Shannon Sharpe:You probably run the back. Chip have the back.
11:19Joe Johnson:Flair to his side, Chip. Yep, that's the only way. That's how you can double team right there. That's the only thing to do, Joe. Obviously, you double team Aaron Donald in the front, and then obviously use the tight end to help with the tackle. And don't have the back coming out of the backfield. Already have him at the line of scrimmage. Right? Really offset. Really offset on the back hip of the tackle. Don't even play with him. Don't try to hide it. Don't try to hide it. We telling you we finna double team, both of y 'all, every play.
11:50Chad Johnson:But then don't that take away a weapon or two of yours, Ocho, when you got your back having to help? And you're tight end helping block?
11:57Shannon Sharpe:Yes. Yes. But it don't do no good to get them out on the route of your quarterback on his damn back. I hope he couldn't block you. That don't do anybody any good. At all. Wide open and your quarterback looking at the side of his helmet. But then look, I think the thing is, it's like, okay, he want to get some work in. He wanted to make sure he's doing the right thing. I think he had, but, you know, he said he didn't want to train like that, the mental prep that it takes for him to train and keep that mindset for a whole year, year after year. Maybe, hey, took some time off. Maybe he's refreshed now.
12:36Chad Johnson:Well, you know, when you take a little time off, them wounds heal up. You starting to feel good. You moving a little different. So you start to get that itch again. He likes you. Let me get back out here, man, and see what I can do. Plus we got Miles Garrett too Boy what? My load ain't gonna be as full As it used to be I don't blame him
12:57Shannon Sharpe:Hey he's like Let me go on back out here I can pick up a quick 30 mil And possibly a Super Bowl ring
13:05Chad Johnson:Hold on what he can pick up A cool 30 mil Man please Boy sign me up Sign me up
13:13Shannon Sharpe:Yeah yeah
13:15Chad Johnson:You know what they say Four wheels move the body, but two wheels move the soul. Poetry, mate. But don't think my motorcycle or my soul will be moving anytime soon. Got a flat tire. That's all right. You ride with Geico Motorcycle Insurance and got their 24-7 emergency roadside service. They'll get you back on the road.
13:33Shannon Sharpe:Beautiful saying. You come up with that? It's not a saying. It's a Geico motorcycle policy. Tomato, tomato. It feels good to ride with help. It feels good to Geico. Emergency roadside service is optional coverage. Didn't catch the latest Roland Martin Unfiltered podcast? Here's what you missed. And the argument is, do you want to win? If you don't win, you have no power. It's real. Those are the very people who I always say vote against their own economic interests and they complain about the very thing they receive. It's raw. I knew that the issue of transgender athletes was not going well with a lot of black men.

17:34Shannon Sharpe:it would be unfair not to give Shadour Sanders the starting opportunity versus the Bills and split reps this week given how close it is heading into the Bears game let's take a listen to what Todd Munkin had to say today on this situation going in the last game that it was relatively close you know in terms of both having an opportunity at the starting position so it would be unfair to not go into the next game and allow Shadour that opportunity. Albeit a different team, certainly at home. There's no guarantee that the same players will be playing this game, but it's the closest you have, and we owe it to both players who have really handled it well and have competed at a high level.
18:20Shannon Sharpe:That's what Young Bull
18:21Joe Johnson:is talking about, huh?
18:22Shannon Sharpe:He's saying, look, it would be unfair not to give Shadour Sanders an opportunity to start the game. Even though they're going to split the refs during the course of the week, considering how close it was with the Bears game, and this competition is still extremely close. So to not give Shadour an opportunity to start, and he said, hey, who knows what Buffalo's going to play? I don't know. I don't know how many guys of our guys we're going to play. But I know that he's earned the right to get a starting opportunity with the guys, just like Deshaun got last week against the Bears, and we'll see what happens.
18:55Shannon Sharpe:Yes, it's different because Deshaun was on the road, should do or be at home yes we get that but it is what it is and he says basically he deserves an opportunity yeah and he's going to get that opportunity this week i mean that's dope that's
19:09Joe Johnson:dope i'm glad he came out and set the record straight so should do or knows the the ones the offensive line the receivers the running backs they know you know who is going to be they understand whoever's calling the plays understands exactly what should do or does well Those first 10, 15 plays, they can be scripted well. For Shadour, what he likes to do, what he's most comfortable with, especially when you practice this week, and what he's had success with. So obviously, when you're going into the preseason and you're playing against another team, they have no clue what you're doing. So therefore, it should be easy being that everything is vanilla outside of the blitzes that we've seen, which is kind of weird, for a team to be doing in the preseason outside of cover one, three, and cover two.
19:49Joe Johnson:But outside of that, man, listen, Shadour made some good throws. He had an interception, the ball, you know, it got away from him. I'm excited. I'm excited. I like the quarterback battle that they have going on. But, again, from the business side of things, I know who's going to be the star. And I'm sure those who've been around the game long enough understand as well. As much as we want to see Shadour play, you know what it comes down to. It's Deshaun Jackson's – Deshaun Jackson. Jesus Christ, Ocho. It's Deshaun Watson's job to lose.
20:18Chad Johnson:Yeah. hey i think shador definitely deserves an opportunity to start and get a chance to play with the ones uncle ocho you know whether it's the first quarter first half whatever it may be because when you look around the nfl it's probably the only really competitive quarterback situation to where you like damn we don't know who gonna really start right game one yeah we leaning toward the sean because of the money that he made and you got to give him an opportunity to get out there and play. But at the same time, I think Shadour definitely deserves that opportunity, regardless of how things have been.
20:52Chad Johnson:I don't think it's been clear-cut as far as their play in game one. I thought they both made mistakes, whether it was Deshaun fumbling, whether it was Shadour throwing the pick. So I think they all got some room for improvement, bro. I'm looking forward to the competition to continue. You know what I mean? Throughout these last two preseason games, see what we come up with.
21:13Shannon Sharpe:If you really look at it, the quarterback competition, it's really two teams. It's the Falcons and it's the Browns. Everything else has been decided. Now, it seems like Tua has a slight lead in Atlanta. Yeah. But for the most part, other than that, I think, look, it's going to be interesting to see. Considering how well Beck played the first game, what's going to happen with him and Jacoby Brissett. But Jacoby Mercedes is making some nice little change also. Yeah, and he wouldn't step on the field until he got it, too.
21:47Joe Johnson:Huh? I say he wouldn't step back on that field until he got it, too.
21:50Shannon Sharpe:Rightfully so. Yeah. Because I was supposed to be the backup last year. Y 'all paid me backup money and had me starting all these games. Hey, run me my money. Yeah, yeah. As a matter of fact, give me a little bit for what you owe me, too. Like, be honest, they pay me what you owe me. but no I think the thing is I agree with you guys I think you should do it's earned the right that an opportunity um to go out there with the ones um I'll be it it's at home crowd know it's going to be you know it's different it is it's different on the road than it is at home everybody knows that Ocho you and I we played the game of football Joe you know it it's different playing a home game versus a road game oh yeah and people like oh I don't it don't bother me it bothers me because I'm trying to hear and the better I can hear the more I can communicate yeah the more you You can communicate the better things and easily things float.
22:41Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. You deal with it. You know, you get hand signals and you're going on silent count and you kind of know what we could kind of during the course of the week because Mike was like, he didn't give a damn. Man, we couldn't hear. You know in this down in distance. You know this area of the field. You know the plays that we call during the week. What the hell you think we're going to call in the game? Something totally different? Well, hell, I didn't hear what you call. I didn't know what you was going to call. Hell. But I'm anxious to see how this thing turns out. Ocho, you believe that because of Deshaun's money, that he's going to get an opportunity.
23:15Shannon Sharpe:He's going to get the first crack at this thing at the first quarter poll. We're going to find out if that's true. I think it's going to be contingent how well the Shadour looks against the Buffalo Bills. Because I can see the Buffalo playing. Buffalo going to play their guys now. Yeah, yeah, yeah. They're going to play their guys. because they might, I believe they probably play game three also, considering there's only three games, and then you've got a whole week because if you don't play them in the third game, Mocho, you're basically off for two weeks. Two weeks, yeah. Yeah.
23:50Joe Johnson:I don't know. And I just heard something you just said. I still don't think it's contingent, even if Shadour does play well against the Buffalo Bills, that will probably play their starters offensively and defensively. Maybe a key few players might not play. But being that Josh played the first game, I'm sure he's going to play the second. Might get a little bit more time in those games, too, being that they might miss the third. I'm just looking at the business side of things. I'm thinking like an owner. I'm thinking like the person who's writing the check. I'm thinking about we gave an individual guaranteed money,$230 million, that has missed almost the last two seasons.
24:25Joe Johnson:So I have money that has been paid out, a lot of it. This year he's making$46 million. If he's healthy, he can go, he going to start, come hell of high water. Because I'm paying him an abnormal amount of money for a quarterback that has given us what most would consider nothing from that said position. So until he loses his job and we're forced to push a door in there, what we will do if things aren't going right by week four or week five, we'll reach that road when we get there.
24:53Shannon Sharpe:Sometimes when you do that, though, you're already out of it. You 0-4, 0-5, you're not coming back. Not that team.
24:59Chad Johnson:Playing catch-up.
25:01Shannon Sharpe:1-4, 0-5, 0-8, that team. There might be some teams that had an injury, a quarterback went down for a week or two, he come back, they can run off some games. Cleveland ain't running off no nine, ten games in a row.
25:11Chad Johnson:They too inexperienced for that, huh?
25:13Shannon Sharpe:Yeah.
25:14Chad Johnson:Yeah.
25:15Shannon Sharpe:They too not good for that. We can say experienced, but it comes down to they're too not good for that. That's what that comes down to. But, look, I like – look, I don't like how they handled that situation because you took reps that you said that he was probably expecting those reps. Because, you know, when you're younger, they tell you, hey, be ready tomorrow. It's your time to shine now. Yes, sir. And so, you know, you go to bed, you expect – like, Joe, I'm like, ooh, man, I'm going to get up there. I'm going to do this right here. Yeah, yeah. I know they're going to call this play right here because I had some success with it, this camp, you know, blah, blah, blah.
25:56Shannon Sharpe:And then all of a sudden you get out there and he's like, hey, he done told Deshaun, Deshaun, you play it. I'm the last one to know. You should have told me before you told Deshaun. Yeah. Tell me. Look, Shador, we're going to give Deshaun the refs tomorrow with the ones. Your time is going to come. But right now we want to take a deeper look at Deshaun, and we're going to go from there. Then you go tell Deshaun. that man, Deshaun already know, and he walking around like he don't know, he putting his pads in his pads like, yeah, I don't know what's going to happen today, Phil. You already know what's going to happen.
26:34Shannon Sharpe:They done told you what's going to happen. But I think Todd Munkin is handling it the best he could because he's a coach in theory. He don't really, he got no say over the Final 53. He don't got no say over the free agency. That's an Andrew Barry and that's a Jimmy and Dee Haslam situation. So, I think he's doing the best he possibly can, given the set of circumstances that he's placed in.
26:59Chad Johnson:I like Todd Monk because he's giving both guys a fair opportunity, Ocho. You know what I mean? He's giving both of them a fair opportunity to go out there and compete for a starting job. I mean, as a competitor, as a player, hell, that's all you can ask for, bro.
27:15Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. That's it.
27:17Joe Johnson:That's it. You know what? I'm thinking about it long term, too, Uncle Joe. I'm thinking about it long term. It's been a very long time since the Cleveland Browns have been able to find the answer at the quarterback position. We all understand in order to have success in the NFL. Forty years. Yeah, in order to have success in the NFL, you have to have that foundation to continue to build on from everything else. And they haven't had that in a very long time. I think long term, Deshaun Watts is not the answer. So the back and forth between who's going to start this specific year between Deshaun and Shadour, it means nothing.
27:47Joe Johnson:I think the quarterback of the future for the Cleveland Browns will be Shador Sanders, based on what he brings, not just on the field, but also what he brings off the field as well, is going to be the guy at the helm for the foreseeable future. As for right now, based on economical reasons, financial reasons, and the kind of money that he's to be paid this year, it just makes sense. Anyone with common sense and understanding when it comes to running a business, you know, the money always plays. This game, this NFL game in general has always been the one that is making the money plays. It's always been that way.
28:24Joe Johnson:So I'm not sure why he say, she say, and he should be playing. That's not the way it works. That's not the way this business has ever worked.
28:34Shannon Sharpe:What you think, Joe? You think that's it? You think it should do it? If it's even, take money aside. And it's hard to take money aside because we know how much Deshaun's making. So it's hard to put money to the side.
28:45Joe Johnson:You can't. See, we can put it aside. The people in the chat can say, we don't care about finances. We don't care about, of course you don't because you're not writing the checks or the people, this is the power that are calling the plays. I mean, that are making those decisions. Of course you don't care because it doesn't affect you. But the owner. I'm just asking y 'all, as fans of the Browns or as fans of the store, put yourselves in Mr. Barry's shoes or Mr. Hatham or whoever it is that's writing the check. whoever cut the checks. And think about how they feel and how they're thinking.
29:21Chad Johnson:Yeah, I mean, it's definitely some challenges, Arca Ocho, because of the money that Deshaun makes. You can't have that sitting on the bench, man. I'm sorry. It's just, it's hard for me to see them having Deshaun just sitting over there on the bench and, you know, not giving him an opportunity to really showcase if he can still play at an elite level or not. So I think you know they're definitely going to do that.
29:48Shannon Sharpe:Hey, let me see if we can earn a little bit of this money. Get some of the money that we...
29:53Joe Johnson:Hey, can I get something? Can I get something back in return?
30:01Shannon Sharpe:We'll get back to this topic. We got a very special guest joining us. He's an eight-time Pro Bowler, three-time first-team All-Pro, two-time Super Bowl champ, Super Bowl 50 MVP. he's an all decade player of the 2010 and he was defensive rookie of the year in 2011 hey he'll love here bro okay where he go he can go to the rams he can go to the bills he go to the commanders he can finish with the cowboy but he know he brought no country through and through bond miller bond what's up howdy guys how's it going what's up what they do nice dope man ocho ocho man how's it going man man man bond i'm happy for you obviously i would have liked for you to finish your career with the Broncos, but that seemingly wasn't in the cards.
30:44Shannon Sharpe:How did the Cowboys come about? When did you know that this was a possibility, and when did they finally close the deal? Man, so they were the first team to contact me like a week before training camp. There had been some talks about the Cowboys throughout the whole offseason, and it just seemed right for me. I live here in the offseason. You know, my mom and my dad are here and my kids are here. You know, I always had a little blue on my heart since I was, you know, a little boy. And, you know, I always paid attention to the Dallas Cowboys. And, you know, my earliest memory of playing football, including the Dallas Cowboys, I heard my daddy screaming in the back.
31:28And I ran back there to see what was going on. And he was screaming because the Dallas Cowboys had scored a touchdown. So that's my earliest memory of playing football and to be back, you know, here to be back home is is a It's a dream within a dream. It's like inception, you know, the movie with Leonardo DiCaprio My dream has always been to play in the NFL and you know to play for the Dallas Cowboys dream within a dream
31:50Joe Johnson:And most of the time I think about some of the people I'm not sure why they say oh Von Miller's old Oh, not the same volume of Von Miller old What do you say those people especially was you having a productive season last year? You know, having nine sacks, being able to come to the Cowboys. Obviously, you being from down there in Texas, how do you feel? How's your body holding up? How do you feel a few years removed from ACL surgery? Man, they say what they want to say about, you know, my on the field production. But there's no question about it. I am the best teammate in the history of the National Football League.
32:26When it comes to being a great teammate, I just know how to do it. I've been doing it for a long time. I know how to bring the guys together. I know how to win my guys, you know, over. You know, every team that I've ever been on is not a guy in their locker room that'll say, you know, anything bad about me. And that's what I care about. You know, the guys that I work with, and I'll be able to do that here with the Dallas Cowboys. You know, they can say what they want to say. I'm worth, you know, 10 to 13 plays a game. I can win 10 to 13 plays a game, and that's with me not even stepping on the football field.
32:56It's just the type of knowledge of the game that I know and to be able to get the guys to play around me to a level that they wouldn't normally play at. And that has nothing to do with the type of skill that I can bring on the football field. So being a great teammate, knowledge of the game, that's 10 to 13 players a game. And then I can still walk into 8 to 10 sacks now. That's just walking in.
33:18Joe Johnson:Talk your shit, right? I need to win one, though, man. You don't need to win 8 to 10. If you win one time a game, that's 17 sacks.
33:26Shannon Sharpe:17 sacks, you'll be historic for grace. And I'm going to have opportunities to do it, though. Like, we got one of the best offenses in the National Football League. I'm going to be able to play with the league, be able to play, you know, up by 10, up by 13, up by 17 points. I'm going to have those opportunities. We only won five games last year with the Commanders. You know, we got hit with injuries and a whole lot of stuff, but we only won five games, and I was able to walk into non-sacks. So, just being the type of player that I am, even at this stage in my career, I still feel like I can be effective.
33:57Shannon Sharpe:but to mention your question, you get nine sacks again, you walking away? Because I think that had a lot to do with it. I think if you'd have got two to three sacks, you'd be like, you know what? I ain't got it no more. Nine sacks. Yeah. Hey, nine sacks. There are a lot of guys that are much younger than you, Vaughn, that can't get nine sacks in the season. And he got nine sacks, yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I mean, it's, you know, like, it just depends. You know, you don't ever want to be a guy that outstaged or welcomed in the NFL, and then you don't ever want to leave too early either, though. So this is another opportunity for me to go out there and play.
34:27You know, I was Hoping that the Denver Broncos would call The Buffalo Bills and none of those teams Maybe I'd get another opportunity at that I can only take advantage Of the present moment And I got an incredible opportunity to play With a great team, great offense I know Christian Parker Really well, Rashawn, Gary Williams, Kenny Clark They all came to my past for a summit this year Donovan Donovan as a rock, I know him pretty well as well P.J. Locke was my teammate in Denver. Javante Williams. I'm familiar with a lot of these guys on this football team. They got one of the best offenses in the National Football League with George Piggins, CeeDee Lamb, Dak Prescott.
35:05So I got an incredible team to be around and I'm excited about it.
35:09Chad Johnson:Hey, Vaughn. Vaughn, when you think about it, bro, you from Texas. You know, two-time Super Bowl champ. What do you think it's going to be like, honestly? I'm a huge fan, by the way, and I'm a huge Cowboys fan, so welcome. What do you think it's going to be like, bro, when you suit up for the first time getting a chance to run out there and really be a cowboy? Man, it's going to be dope. I don't think it really just has not hit me yet. Like, you know, I was talking to my agent about six hours ago, and he was like, man, you know, we're going to go ahead and put the trigger on this. And it's still like it just didn't hit me yet.
35:41Like, I kind of knew the whole time I had been giving like, you know, hints on social media and like playing with the fans on social media about the Dallas Cowboys for weeks now. So it kind of was always there. But, like, you know, to really, like, go all the way through it, it still hasn't hit me yet. My very first game playing in Cowboys Stadium was last year with the Commanders. That was my very first time playing in Dallas Stadium. And, you know, to be, like, a Dallas Cowboys full-time, man, it still hasn't hit me yet, man. It's still, like, in that numb stage, man. But I'm excited to be here.
36:14I'm excited to get it started.
36:15Shannon Sharpe:Vaughn, you didn't play with that 51-48 game when Peyton, you know, y 'all had the blue. No, I didn't. That was – okay. Yeah, I didn't play in that one. My very first game – We lost, Vaughn. We're here to join back. But, I mean, look at his resume. Eight-time Pro Bowler. Three-time First Team All-Pro. Two-time Super Bowl champ. Super Bowl MVP. All decades of the 2010s. 2011 Defensive Rookie of the Year. That is first ballot Hall of Famer. A member of that prized 2011 class with Cam Newton with the number one first pick, and you have Vaughn Miller. You have Julio Jones, A.J. Green, Richard Sherman, Cam Hayward, Cam Jordan.
36:57Shannon Sharpe:All of those guys were in that draft. J.J. Watt were in that draft.
37:02Joe Johnson:Damn. They had some boys. That was a good year.
37:06Shannon Sharpe:Hey, hey, Vaughn. We've heard you guys talk about it. You, Sherm, you guys have talked about it, that you believe. A lot of people say 1983 is the best drafted class ever. You say, nah. When you look at our draft class from top to bottom, you look at Cam Gordon number one, and I was number two, and you look at J.J. Watt, you look at Cam Hayward, you look at Cam Jordan, Justin Houston had 22 sacks in that draft class. Yep. Is 2011 the best draft class ever assembled? Man, you know, I'm going to go with that one all day. You know, Cameron Hayward is in that draft, Richard Sherman. We got a lot of guys.
37:40Cam Jordan. We got Cam Jordan. We got a lot of Hall of Fame guys in that class. And, you know, they got Hall of Fame guys in that class. too but you know top to bottom man we got some players that have really changed you know the face of football um and it's dope to be associated with those guys i knew we had a special group whenever i was coming out you know having marcel darius and cam newton and julio jones and and aj green and and patrick peterson patrick peterson aj green uh tyce uh tyron smith you know jj watt Like it just goes up and down the list, you know, up and down the list of guys that have had a huge effect on this on this game.
38:19Joe Johnson:You know, I have a question. Obviously, you've accomplished so much in this NFL based on your resume, based on your accolades. You are you are a Hall of Famer. If you could write the perfect storybook ending to your career, what would it look like? um i mean obviously you know the game is not fun no more like unless you're playing in big time games like once you experience like you know afc championship games nfc championship games super bowls um you know divisional games winning those games and playing those primetime games like football is football is hard man it's tough man and if you're not if you're not playing those games you kind of don't have that that sting no more so you know for me i would i would like to continue playing in those games and continue playing the AFC Championships to have another shot at the Super Bowl.
39:05That would be the best ending for me. I only need three and a half more sacks to be top five in NFL history. Three and a half sacks, I can get that two and a half games, two games. I can walk in. Yeah, 138, 138, 138 and a half. And I need one. 11 and a half, Bob, put you at 150. Now you got Bruce at two, got 205. You got Reggie at a 198.
39:31Shannon Sharpe:I think Kevin Green's next at 161.5. I think, you know, I'm just going to be realistic and, you know, optimistic at the same time. I can walk. So, Michael Strahan, I can give Michael Strahan a three-and-a-half sacks. He's number five. So, I can get top five by when it's all set and done for sure.
39:50Joe Johnson:I like that. I like that.
39:51Chad Johnson:Hey, hey, we locked in, baby. Hey, Vaughn, I'm going to be locked in, baby. You know, I'm going to be – hey, hey, I just need you to get out to that quarterback, man. Do your thing, brother. Do your thing. Congratulations, man.
40:03Shannon Sharpe:Before you go, Vaughn, you mentioned you got kids. How old is the oldest now? Because now they know what dad does. Now they get an opportunity to go to the game. And I think you got girls. So they in their cheerleading outfit. They got little cowgirl cheerleading outfits. They going to be excited. They don't have to leave. They don't have to go fly, get on the plane, and come see dad play. They can just, hey, get in the car and come see dad play. Yeah, I got. So my oldest, he's five. Today was his fifth birthday. Okay, you got a five-year-old. I got a five-year-old. I got a three-year-old. And I got a seven-month-old.
40:34Okay. There we go. You know, my oldest is dope because when the Cowboys call, right, and I was on the phone and I was telling everybody, I was like, hey, man, like, guess who called me today? Like, this was about two, three weeks ago. And my oldest son, he was paying attention. And I got on the phone with one of my boys, and I was like, hey, guess who what team called me today? And my son said, the Dallas Cowboys called my dad. So he's at that age where he's conscious of what's going on. So that's what I always wanted for my kids to be able to remember and not just had to go to YouTube and see what type of player I was.
41:07So for them to be conscious and aware, it's super cool.
41:11Chad Johnson:Hey, Vaughn, I got a four-year-old son over here, man. Hey, look, I'm trying to put this squad together. I might need your boy over here, man. You say you got a five-year-old. I'm trying to put a squad together now. Yeah, I got a five-year-old. His name is Valor. My three-year-old, his name is Victory. He was born on the same day as Super Bowl 50. So he was born February 7, 2023. Then I got my youngest. Her name is Virtue. She's seven months. Her birthday was February. Her birthday was December 26. So right after Christmas. Wow.
41:42Shannon Sharpe:Damn. That's dope. Well, Vondo, hey, I mean, I know that you got to do what you got to do with the Cowboys this year. But don't give up hope on the more Broncos. No, I'm not. I'm not. I think you got one more round in you. You can finish up like your favorite uncle did. I went back one last time. It didn't work out. I didn't get to the Super Bowl, but I got a chance to come home. Man, you know, like I tried. And, you know, I've never been scared to, you know, get on the phone with the GM or text the GM or let Broncos country know that I'm still thinking about the Broncos. Like I've never been scared.
42:14I never had too much pride and ego to let my teams that I played for before know that I'm still interested. And I did that this offseason. I did that last offseason as well. and we'll see how it goes going forward. But, you know, I'll definitely end my career with the Broncos in some form or fashion.
42:31Shannon Sharpe:Hey, before we get you up, this is the last one we're going to get you out of here. You're the co-founder of Green Pastures Chicken. Break down the chicken business. And why these damn eggs so damn high? So, you know, my chicken company is Green Pastures Chicken. It's based here in Texas as well, right outside of Ilgan. We have a pasture-raised, organic, non-GMO, humanely-raised product. One of our biggest partners is Meat Church with Matt Pittman. He's the official pit boss with the Dallas Cowboys as well. So it was so many things that just made sense for me to sign with the Dallas Cowboys. We sell our chickens at Central Market here in Dallas.
43:09And other teams, like I could talk about Green and Past the Chicken, you had to get online to order it. Now you can just go to Central Market here in Dallas and go buy our birds. So it was just so many different things that made sense for me to sign with the Dallas Cowboys. But Green and Pastors Chicken, you know, they live a country club lifestyle. I think you can taste, you know, the difference in our birds. You can go to greenandpastorschicken.com to really check it out.
43:32Shannon Sharpe:When I come to Dallas, I'm going to have to check them out because you were an ag major at Texas A &M. Yes, sir. Poultry sign. I know a little something being raised on a farm, so I know a little something about chickens myself. So, but Vons, I'm proud of you. I'm happy for you, man. Congratulations. And to stay healthy and wish you best of luck. Hey, I appreciate you guys. Thanks, man. Thanks, Joe. Thanks, Ocho. I appreciate you guys, man. This was cool.
43:54Chad Johnson:Go Cowboys. Yes, sir.
43:57Shannon Sharpe:Do it.
43:57Chad Johnson:Man, Joe, stop all that foolish stuff. Come on, man. Hey, come on. I don't know why you said it hating on me, man. Why me and Vons can't, you know what I'm saying, kick it like how we doing. I'm happy for Vons.
44:06Shannon Sharpe:I ain't happy for you. Damn. I know him 15 years. I just met you like two months ago. But congratulations, Vaughn. I'm happy for you. Tell the family I said hello, man. And we'll see you down the road. Hey, I appreciate you guys. Y 'all have a good one. Yeah, when you get that first set, come back here and tell us about it. I got you. I got you. I got you. Vaughn Miller, ladies and gentlemen.

48:30In 2015, teenager Joy Morgan discovered strangely compelling YouTube sermons from the religious group Israel United in Christ, or IUIC. Her initial curiosity developed into devotion. She distanced herself from friends and family, embraced new identity, immersed herself in the IUIC, and believed she'd found the truth. IUIC is the best family that I've ever had. In fact, she had found what many called a cult. And on Boxing Day 2018, Joy disappeared forever. In the new six-part investigative podcast, The Missing Sister, Charlie Brinkhurst Cuff and Free Turn explore Joy's story, the family she left, and the religious group she found.

49:35Shannon Sharpe:The Browns, Andrew, Browns, Jim, Andrew Bray, spoke to our married home, D-Boy Joe, this morning that made it clear the Sean Watson contract will have no advantage over Chedua Sanders. Let's take a listen to what Andrew Barry had to say this morning.
49:48Chad Johnson:And it's a lot of people I know of you heard that said, you know what, they're paying Watson too much money to not start it. How much pressure is on you to start Watson because of what you're paying? It doesn't matter what they're paying when they're on the field. What we want are our wins and performance and production. It's a performance-based decision. The contract does not matter. We're pleased with both guys. You know, ultimately it's performance and production that's going to drive the decision for Coach Munk. From that last game, Coach, how would you rate the performances, though, from the quarterbacks?
50:18I think we saw good things from both guys. You know, obviously, look, it's preseason, so. It's preseason, it's early. You know, guys aren't going to be perfect. You know, Deshaun, we were really pleased with how he operated the offense. You know, he navigated the pocket well, he was accurate. When we had either miscues or a look that, you know, we weren't necessarily expecting down the field in coverage, He did a really nice job. He didn't break off like a huge scramble, but he did a good job of turning a play that really should have been a negative into a no game or a short game with his legs.
50:47He's put in a lot of hard work over the past last year plus. And then Shador, I think we continue to see major growth in Shador's game, both in terms of his processing speed. Obviously, don't like to see the turnover. On the whole, a lot of good to take. And then some good moments where we're going to be able to coach off of them and then really improve as we go into the Buffalo week.
51:06Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, yeah, definitely. Ocho, you believe what he said?
51:11Joe Johnson:Come on, man. Listen, I respect Mr. Berry. You hear me? I respect him. I love him. He has a very tough job to do. But to sit there and say that what you're making does not have any significance, whether you start or not when it comes to money, come on, man. I'm saying, Ocho, what else? And Joe, in the history of this game, has ever, it's never happened where someone's making that kind of money and someone else beats them out of their position. It just, it hasn't happened ever. Listen. Ever. Listen. It's okay to, you know, when you ask this, like a politician, you ask a politician, they answer the question without really answering it.
51:58Joe Johnson:And if you know the game, understand the game, you understand the menace when it comes to this game, you know they're lying. Like come on man. I understand it but he has to do that. He has to come on and say that. He can't tell the truth. But even a blind man can see how this business has always worked when it comes to the person making the most of the money. They've always been the starter. If you play receiver you're making the most of the money. Who's getting the most opportunities Unc? You got to pay but they get paid the most.
52:30Shannon Sharpe:Come on man. It's just hard for me to see a guy, Joe, that's making that kind of money that doesn't get the opportunity to start. Now, I'm not saying he's going to start all 17 games, but I just don't know how he's on your roster and he doesn't start day one. I'm not saying he start day 50. I'm not saying he start day 30, day 45, day 85. All I'm saying is it's just hard when one guy is making$46,$47 million and the other guy is making a million and a half. It's just hard for me to see it. Yeah.
53:02Chad Johnson:It's a tough situation, but he can't come on there and say that it does play a factor. You know, I thought he had to answer the question politically correct. And the fact that I think they definitely want to give Deshaun an opportunity. You know what I mean? You have to give him a chance, bro. And like he said, they both showed some great flashes, obviously the turnovers, but for the most part, it's still wide open. and the fact that they're giving those guys a chance to compete for their job, I mean, I think that's, as a competitor, as a player, that's all I would ask for, bro. But be honest with me.
53:41Chad Johnson:Don't have me out here competing, Uncle Ocho, knowing damn well I ain't got a chance to win the job, bro.
53:46Shannon Sharpe:But the thing is, somebody said in the chat where they did it with Tom Brady, Drew Bledsoe got hurt. Yeah. Now, the reason why Drew got hurt, Tom came in. Coach Belichick felt that Brady was playing better than Drew before Drew got hurt. He had the hot hand. So that's not – Brady had the hot hand. He did not start the opening week. He did not.
54:15Chad Johnson:Yeah.
54:15Shannon Sharpe:So it's a totally different thing. If Deshaun playing, hopefully he doesn't get hurt, he gets benched. But the question – but the thing was, you said that Brady did it with Bledsoe. That didn't happen. Drew started the first five games. Drew got hurt. Tom came in. Get the Jets. Coach Belichick felt that Tom was playing better than Drew before Drew got hurt. That's what Mike Shanahan told us. Because, Ocho, you know the general rule of thumb, you can't lose your job because of an injury. Mike Shanahan said, that's bull jive. He said, if you get hurt, the guy comes in, and he's playing better than you before you got hurt, that's his job.
54:53Shannon Sharpe:Hello.
54:54Chad Johnson:Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And think about this. If you start Shadour to start, I just think it's hard to sit Deshaun on the bench making that type of money. Y 'all don't think they'll just try to get rid of him. Maybe they'll eat their contract. They probably won't be able to trade him. But, hell, if Shadour do win the job, you can't have Deshaun sitting over there on the damn bench.
55:19Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. Same thing, Tony Romo, Dak Prescott. You look at the way Dak played in the regular season. As a rookie, Tony Back was injured. But they said, you know what? The way this rookie played, he playing better than what Dak played last year. Yeah, we got to stay with him. Yeah.
55:44Chad Johnson:Yeah.
55:44Shannon Sharpe:And Tony been in the broadcast booth ever since.
55:46Chad Johnson:Yeah. Dak and Zeke was a monster they rookie year. Yeah. Them boys were cutting up.
55:55Damn.
55:56Shannon Sharpe:I get it it's so funny Russell West there's a big difference between 47 million and a million five big difference
56:07Joe Johnson:you know what's funny too I like the fact that Joe and Nebo were able to get Mr. Berry yeah that's great but what I don't like is how people eat it up how people eat it up and don't see through the politically correct stuff they do they see because they don't. I think some people actually really believe. They really believe. You can't be that... I was going to go into politics, but I'm not going to go there because that's not... In other words, you want to say these people can't be that naive and believe. Right. I'm not going to go there, but come on, man. I just... That was dope, though.
56:49Shannon Sharpe:It's a close race. it's not like either guy is that much ahead of the other Joe it's not like Usain Bolt and he racing the field from 2008 2012 when he was just he was jogging and looking back side to side at people it ain't that it's close or they were already named a starter you see what they did in Minnesota they already named a starter didn't they so so if it was if one guy i believe if one guy was so much better than the other they would have already named a starter the mere fact that they haven't named a starter lets you know this thing
57:28Chad Johnson:is really really close hey i do think they got a guy who they leaning toward though that could be the case joe i think they got a guy who they leaning toward and i don't think that they won't come out and see it but i do think they have a guy who they really want to lean toward
57:45Shannon Sharpe:but he said something but I did hear him say something very interesting he said you know didn't like the turnover from Shadour yeah if I didn't know that I could have swore uh Deshaun fumbled the ball yeah yeah yeah y 'all did y 'all hear that chat he made sure to know one guy turned the ball over when both guys turned the ball over yeah
58:13Chad Johnson:That's one game, man.
58:14Shannon Sharpe:See, you're saying, Ocho, when you're an investigator or you're a psycho, when you're evaluating people, you don't listen to what they say. You listen to what they should have said. Mm. Mm. He could have said, you know, I thought we should try and play well. Obviously, we don't like to turn the ball over. The thing that we do want, we'll stay on the field. But he may know that you do or turn the ball over. Yeah. Well, he could have easily said both guys turned the ball over.
58:44Okay.
58:45Shannon Sharpe:I'm just – you know, sometimes I put my little psych hat on it. Okay, I try to evaluate. Okay, what did he say?
58:51Chad Johnson:I like that.
58:52Shannon Sharpe:What should he have said?
58:53Chad Johnson:Yeah.
58:54Shannon Sharpe:Why did he say that? Who could have easily just have said that? It kind of got the same result. Huh, interesting. Look There's no easy solution here There's not
59:11Joe Johnson:There's not Oh it's easy You think so No it's easy it's not complicating Everyone else is complicating it Everybody else is complicating it Joe I told you from jump when we first had this discussion Who's job it is to lose Number four is Oh yeah yeah yeah
59:29Shannon Sharpe:No I'm saying is his job to lose. But the mere fact that he hasn't been named, it tells me that he's not running away with the competition. Now, it might be a situation, don't you, that they already know they got their quarterback and they just try to keep everybody, to keep the natives from being restless. Yeah.
59:51Joe Johnson:You don't think the Browns organization is enjoying this? The extra press, the extra media, the constant conversations, the eyes on them, You don't think they're enjoying this? They like this. They don't want to name a starter. Well, they're getting talked about. For what? When is the last time that's happened? I've never seen the Browns talked about in this magnitude ever since 12 got there.
1:00:16Shannon Sharpe:Somebody in the chat said the clip got cut short, but he did mention that later that both quarterbacks turned the ball over.
1:00:23Joe Johnson:Okay.
1:00:27Shannon Sharpe:But look, at the end of the day, they're going to have to make a decision, and somebody's going to be very unhappy with that decision. Yep. And when you make a decision, anytime you make a decision, somebody is upset with the decision that you made. There's never been a decision where everybody is happy with a decision that's been made. I defy you to find a time in history, regardless of what the scale of the event was, that everybody was happy with the decision that was made. Because that's why you have to be careful when you take a stand against anything. because no matter what, if I say, Ocho, I want to save the whale.
1:01:04Shannon Sharpe:They're going to say, what about the elephant? What about the rhinoceros? If I say, you know what, I'm going to start a campaign and I want to rescue, I want to save, I want dogs, I don't want to put any dogs down.
1:01:21Shannon Sharpe:Somebody going to find something.
1:01:23Chad Johnson:Yeah.
1:01:24Shannon Sharpe:I got cancer. What about heart disease? what about diabetes Joe you can't make everybody happy you can't bro you can't man I want to rescue children all across the world man you need to rescue these black people right here in America you keep on talking about save the wild officer and save the ninja save the ninja that's what needs saving we going extinct oh boy Right. But that's how it is. So you got to just realize that any time you say something, somebody's going to be directly opposed to what you said. And you got to be able to live with that. You got to be able to stand on that because everybody – I can say Tom Brady is great.
1:02:11Shannon Sharpe:And they're going to say, what about those great defenses that he had? Yeah. What about this? What about that? Well, Peyton Manning. Man, but Peyton Manning, look at all the games that he lost. He lost his first five or six playoff games. Everybody going to be happy with what you say. so you know what it is. You just, you say what you feel, you believe you, you believe you're correct, and you just go with that. Because everybody ain't going to be happy with what you say. You can't. You can't make everybody happy. It's going to be a rebuttal. Because if you make everybody happy, one person I know that's going to be very unhappy, and that's yourself.
1:02:44Chad Johnson:Yep.
1:02:47Shannon Sharpe:So, you had to bet any money, any amount of money, Ocho, that meant something to you. The guy that trots out there with the first snap, opening day is who?
1:02:59Joe Johnson:Deshaun.
1:03:00Chad Johnson:Joe?
1:03:01Joe Johnson:And I bet anything.
1:03:03Chad Johnson:Joe? Ocho going with Deshaun because of the money that he making. I ain't, I'm going I need to see these last two games. I'm sorry. I mean because I think Shadour getting to start this game too. I think if he plays lights out and let's say Deshaun don't have a great showing I think he can lean more towards Shadour. I'm just going off Barry from what he was saying in this interview, you know, there's no clear front runner. So if Shadur takes that lead, he plays great in this second season, and he takes it, I think he'll be, I think he'll be in the front runner as far as who will start, you know, come game one.
