In short
Childhood and early dating stories from NFL legend Sterling Sharpe, plus later life anecdotes about money, parenting, and first “house” mistakes.
Guests
Sterling Sharpe (former Green Bay Packers wide receiver; shares personal memories from college and family life). Ocho (host/regular co-speaker; tells related stories and prompts Sharpe’s childhood/dating claims). Joe (co-speaker; challenges details and adds his own experiences).
Key claims
- Sharpe’s mom met his first girlfriend, “Cookie,” at a Broncos game; he says her girlfriends would have “switched places” with her if they knew the truth.
- Sharpe “watched” Cookie in college for weeks, then approached her in the cafeteria; he says she already knew who he was when he introduced himself as Shannon Sharpe.
- Cookie helped him early on by taking his clothes to the laundromat; he frames it as “bait” that led to their relationship.
- Sharpe later describes buying a first home in Buckhead that was far over budget after touring multiple properties; he says the seller was Juanita (Sugar Ray Leonard’s ex-wife).
- Parenting example: he claims his kids were so well-behaved that other parents assumed he used “tricks,” and he recounts a movie mix-up where they left the wrong theater.
Notable examples
- Hospital story: Sharpe meets Cookie’s big sister “Libby” while visiting his nephew in Augusta.
- “J-wax” and car-washing stories from childhood with his grandfather “Papa.”

Wait, they up the price? You have to get somebody, hey, let me get somebody else tickets because my tickets were always in the same area. So, you know, my mom come and, you know, so I got, you know, I'm going to get like right there. You know, when I went out, you know, I ain't had nobody. I ain't want them to sit where my family would sit. So I put them, you know, I put them over there. Other side. You over here. Okay.
4:28You ain't want nobody to see you. Okay. Okay. Okay.
4:35Shannon Sharpe:Where your mama sit, don't worry about that. Don't worry about that. Don't worry about that. You not sitting with her. So that's you. Hell no. Okay. No, everybody can't get to be in. That privilege? Oh, so you're not the type. When you're dating somebody, everybody meet your mama? Hell no. Okay. That's very important because you know your mama tell you about your girl before anybody else. She knows. She can read her. I'm trying to think. Once I met Cookie in college. She met... Yeah, but it takes an idea. You ain't just finna meet off the real. Because your mama gonna tell you the truth. baby this ain't the one that ain't happening I got you it just might be might be just a convenience store we just stopping to get some candy you heard what you just said it might just be a convenience store your mama let you know that's the run it's going to be she's going to know I already knew that I don't need mom to tell me that
5:42Shannon Sharpe:I don't need mom to tell me that I knew that going in My bad. Let me get out your business. My bad. But you know, hey, but everybody wanted to go to the game because Broncos been sold out. Broncos got the second largest sellout behind the Washington team. So tickets ain't easy to get. Everybody can't get tickets going to the Broncos game. And so, you know. Is it still like that right now? Yeah. Especially now that y 'all winning. I know it's like, I know the ticket price is crazy. But the Broncos been sold out. I mean, the Broncos been sold out since, I don't know, 70, 75, 77, something like that.
6:20Shannon Sharpe:Been sold out for damn near 50 years. God damn y 'all fans loyal. Oh, could he? But I mean, look, I'm sure she's told people. No, but she would really like the first girlfriend, you know, my mom met. My mom met at the game. She get there like, oh. Hold on, mama. I said, mama, you going to be sitting next to my girlfriend. She's like, okay. Tell us more about Cookie, huh? Nah, ain't nothing to tell. Ain't nothing to tell. Story time. We got pay time. We got two hours to go. Nah, we ain't got no time to tell. Nah. Hey, I can tell you like her because every time I say Cookie, you start blushing. Nah, nah, nah, nah.
7:07Shannon Sharpe:I see you. I see you. Okay. I already told you about cooking. I told you I watched her for like two weeks. Coming to the cafeteria by herself. I mean, she had some girlfriends because I knew one of her girlfriends was a cheerleader. So I knew her girlfriend for a couple of years. So when she got there, I was a junior when she was a freshman. And I watched her go into the cafeteria by herself. She'd leave, walk back to her dorm. The girl's dorm, the freshman dorm was Lock and Hall. I watched it because I watched Ocho I'd be in the bathroom I'd go to the short hall and I'd be looking at the bathroom with it just like this here can I tell you something real quick before you finish this sound like some love and basketball shit yeah I like that I don't know about no love and basketball but Ocho I said watch it just like this here damn I'm just waiting I said I know she got somebody I know somebody got some ball so you know what I'll never forget that day I was like this here Ocho I said, shit, I'm going to go.
8:08Shannon Sharpe:I hit that door. Oh, over that red out there. I said, hey, hey. I said, hey. I said, what's your name? She said, my name is, I was going to call her Cookie. But she said, I said, hey, you got a boyfriend? She said, no. I said, where you from? She told me she's from Brunswick. Oh, she from Jersey? Okay. in Brunswick. Oh, Jordan, my bad, my bad, my bad. Okay. Yeah. I said, okay. So we talked. I said, I'll see you around. She said, okay. So she was like, what's your name? I said, Shannon. She said, Shannon Sharp? I said, yeah. She's like, mm-hmm. I said, okay. Oh, hey, you in there. Hey, you was in there because she already knew who you were.
8:57When you said Shannon, she was like, oh, Shannon Sharp, you already know your name. But everybody, hey,
9:03Shannon Sharpe:Everybody knows she now. Okay, okay, okay. That's my dog. So, you know, I watched her. So the next day I see her at class, walking in the hallway. I said, hey, how you doing? She said, hey. She smiled. I said, okay. But I had told my roommate. At the time, I had already told my roommate. I said, that's going to be my girlfriend. He said, the light-skinned chick with the short hair? I said, yeah. Wait, hold on. Aren't she with light-skinned with short hair? Hold on. Like the little pixie cut, like with the little curls? Oh, like in the 90s. tell me some more hey this is good good and so I said you like football she said it's okay she said what's your number I said I ain't telling my number I said I'll be real easy to spot you were talking spicy I said I'll be real easy to spot you know who I am I say probably the first two to three minutes of the game there'll be no doubt which one I'm out so man and that's how I started you know but I and everybody knew I was for real about her cause at that point in time hey I said uh I need you to do me a favor she said what you doing I said uh man they be tripping with them the washing machine to dry.
10:35Shannon Sharpe:I said, people be stealing your clothes and be taking stuff out. I said, can you take my clothes to the laundromat? She said, okay, sure. She said, but I don't have no car. I said, you take my clothes. Ooh! Hey, right, hey. That's how you go fishing right there, huh? You hear me? Huh? Hey, wash my clothes for me, so people be stealing it. You threw the bait out there. And she bit quick. You read that thing right on in. What? I know that game. I used to use that line too. Yeah, man. So, so, so, I gave her the keys to the car. And I, man, Ocho, how we scritching and all of a sudden, my car, now I got a 200, I got a 300ZX, T-Tops.
11:27Shannon Sharpe:How about, how she gonna come where, football practice with the windows down, the top out, and blow the horn. Hey, um, let me tell you what that's called, um. Let me tell you what that's called. You know when you walk the dog, right? You know you walk the dog? What's the first thing the dog do? They go, they find their territory, and they pick it. And you see them all in their territory. She letting the boy know. Okay? Boom. Y 'all stop trying to holler at me. You see where I'm at in the tee top with the PC cut? I know she probably had on some shades too. You know, okay. Yeah, honey, girlfriend.
12:01Hold on. Honey, girlfriend, yeah. What you think about rekindling that flame, though?
12:05Shannon Sharpe:Nah, bro. No? You don't think so? Nah. But listen, the story is so good. But I – oh, look here. After the game, Mocho, we go out to eat. We go to Rhymes. We go to the movies. You know, my – hey, my brother give me like – hey, you score a touchdown. I give you$200. You get 100 yards a game. I give you$200, blah, blah, blah. So, hey, I have 200 yards, three touchdowns, four touchdowns. Man, I be straight. So, you know, hey, I'm going off campus. You know, we go out to eat. We go, hey, I'm at Applebee's. I'm at the Chili's. I'm at, hey, I'm Ryan's. I'm everywhere. Can't hear you? Got to go to the hotel.
12:43Shannon Sharpe:You know, got a hotel. Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. You know what I'm saying? I'm a big mom. You was at the hotel too? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Hey, boy, I like this story, boy. Yeah, dude, you know. yeah my mom my mom you look my sister but the thing was Ocho I didn't really it didn't really dawn on me it didn't dawn on me my nephew had got sick so he was at the hospital in Augusta and my sister's like I gotta go to the hospital I gotta take Dedrick to the hospital that's my nephew's name so this was like probably was like March or April because at this time, Libby had, Libby met her? Look, a lot of times, like, in that situation, you have to understand, and what she didn't understand is that all her girlfriends telling her, you don't need to be with him, and I told her, I said, all your girlfriends that's telling you, you don't need to be with me, I guarantee you they would switch places with you. talk your, hey, boy. I was getting cake. I was getting pallets of tuna. That's all I could eat. I got to pay for the house. I got to pay child support. That's all I could eat. Hey, hey, listen, you got to make, you got to sacrifice, huh? You wanted that house. Had to. Listen, I understand your pain. I've been there before. Maybe not, maybe not to that extent. but listen, we've all had to sacrifice something for something else that we like and we love.
24:30We appreciate at that time. Knowing it's out of our budget.
24:35Shannon Sharpe:Knowing good and well because we know it's coming. Ain't had no tape. Ain't had no tape, nothing to eat off. I didn't. I had a couch and I had a bed. That's all I had for. Hey, look. Hey, that shit had you working hard as I don't know what to do. I had a king's eye bed. I had a case I bet. What's that? You remember the furniture store Huff's, Joe? Right there on Ladies Road by that church? It used to be a glass. It was a big glass building right there.
25:10Shannon Sharpe:But the furniture, that's where it all, all the high-end black entertainers and them, they used to go get their furniture up there. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You probably spent the prison. Why do that? But you know, I had to get my back. I had to say, oh, Ocho, Ocho. I had a bed. But you know, my bed was black lacquer. Black lacquer. Ooh. And it light up. Like an infinity. And hold on. You had LED lights? Yeah, yeah. Before it was cool. Before it was in style. Right. And let me tell you what I did. Let me tell you what I had, Ocho. I splurred a little bit. I went all in. I was like, whoo. Like I said, I was eating ketchup with a nip needle.
25:53Shannon Sharpe:Come on. Take your time. Man. I had me a leather comforter. Custom made for the bed. Oh, boy. You could have. Leather? They got what? Leather. Leather comforter. Custom for the bed. Yeah. Oh, yeah. You could have. Then I did a card signing. You know, I did a card signing. You know, back then you saw a card signing card. Uh-uh. They gave your boy a little money. I signed like$2 ,000 a car. got me about 12.5. Okay. Bought me some satin sheets.
26:28Shannon Sharpe:Sateen. Hey, how about this here? Man, I see them in the movies, how they run jumping in the bed. How I go jumping in the bed and slide my ass all, which comes to the floor to the other side. On the floor I win. I say, oh, man, this don't look good. This ain't functional. Hey, hey, hold up. But why you talking, Ocho? Y 'all still don't do card signings? I do every Blue Moon, Joe. Because back then, you know, my brother would take me like they want my brother. He had just, but in the beginning, they wanted my brother because he had, you know, won the triple crown. He was an all pro, you know, 100 catch season, back to back 100 catch season.
27:10Shannon Sharpe:So they wanted him. And the only way he would go do the signing, they had to take me. So they throw you for$2 ,500,$5 ,000. Right, right, right. I mean, one time I signed 10 ,000 cards. Damn. And one thing, they gave you three months. Yeah. Oh, to get through it? Okay, okay. But I had a couch. I had a couch. I had no TV. But I had a bed. The bed was nice. I've been saying the bed was nice. The bed was nice. Oh. Yeah. Hey, I'm still doing card signings to this day, boy. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I still sign a lot, boy. Man, I say, man. Boy, hey, I look back, I think by some time now, I'll just be laying down like, damn.
28:02Shannon Sharpe:This thing could have went sideways in a hurry. I ain't have no choice. You were shooting up? Yeah, I was shooting up. But I got three kids. They in daycare. and I got I still got to take care of granny I still got to take care of Libby mom every once in a while plus the kid that's my number one responsibility so if I got to do without I'm cool people say man I can train myself I'll go a couple of days without eating and be killing you and be killing you you're so hungry but I say nah I got to put myself in a situation because if I ever have to not be able to eat I'm going to be good with you.
28:48Shannon Sharpe:Hey, it's a lot of people they ain't going to be able to understand what you're saying, bro. No, no, no, Joe. It's a lot of us it's a lot of us who have been there and done that. Hey, Joe, the funny thing about it is is the people the people aren't going to understand because they've only seen the finished part up. They've only seen the finished part they've only seen you on Sundays. They don't understand the walk you took and the path you took to get to where you are. They don't understand the sacrifices that came along that goddamn journey before you got to what you see on Sundays. They'll never get it.
29:21Shannon Sharpe:They'll never get it. When I coined the phrase to me, I wore summer clothes. I told him when I went to college, I said, man, I wore summer clothes. What do you mean summer clothes? Some of my brothers, some of my uncles, some of my cousins. Hey, they just passed that thing on down. I'm like, they so smacking with us last year. I got the way. Man, listen. And when it got too small for me, that's the jeans they cut up. And you know back then, you know, you're on your knees. You put holes in your knees in the jeans. My grandma was wearing jeans that had gotten too small for me. Man. All that stitching.
30:02Shannon Sharpe:Come on, granny.
30:07Shannon Sharpe:This when you was in college. No, I was coming up in school. I was coming up. Oh, yeah. But no, when I was in college, you know, look, I went to college. I had matching luggage. I had two Piggly Wiggly bags with everything I own inside of them. I had matching luggage, Ochoa, Piggly Wiggly. No, it might have been Winn-Dix at the time. They changed the name to Piggly Wiggly. But I had two brown bags. You don't believe me? Ask Pastor Ford. I went to class of 86. That's what we call ourselves, 86. Ask them how I showed up. Two Winn-Dixie brown grocery bags. I had everything I own in those bags. When you're moving like I do, trips don't always come together weeks in advance.

34:05Shannon Sharpe:Don't miss Guns N' Roses. Right, right. Hey, tell me something. Did you raise your kids like that? You know what? I mean, you had times you may yell at them, but I'm like, I'm going to be honest with you. I ain't, you know, ain't none of my kids had their ass up. Oh, no, no, no, no, I had their ass up. But just by me raising my voice, that'd be enough for some tears to come down their eyes. You feel what I'm saying? Yeah. Went to the movies. Me and my girl, we going to see one movie. They going to see another movie. What you want? You know how kids are. Everybody, big slushy, on popcorn, on candy.
34:49Shannon Sharpe:I said, okay. the movie they're gonna be close in time I said don't get y 'all don't y 'all leave this movie y 'all let me come back in here and get you okay daddy okay our movie's in I think I was in it might might have been like probably like two or three minutes after theirs I'm gonna go get them because I was down the hall we had fifth joke the movie we down the hall on the left and they like in the front I see them looking I hear them I see them I see I see him and I hear him talking. I think they went to see this movie right here. I said, where y 'all going? It was heat, heat, heat. I didn't wanna leave the movie.
35:29Shannon Sharpe:Don't worry about it. I got something for you when you get home.
35:35Shannon Sharpe:So we got home. Everybody tried to put it on everybody. I said, why you just didn't stay? Well, I didn't wanna, I said, I appreciate that. I appreciate y 'all sticking together, but you should have stuck your ass together in the movie where I told you to be. I told their ass up. Now I said, now listen, I'm going to work out. Don't y 'all leave these rooms. I said, if the house on fire and the fireman come get you, say, hell no, get out. Shud their ass out the house. Say, my daddy said, don't leave this room.
36:15Shannon Sharpe:That's a good one. Bad please. Because you don't know. Listen, when the kids, look, I'm very particular, and I don't want nobody because I don't want to have to hurt somebody behind my kids because I will. Yeah. And this was really the first time they've ever done this. I used to take the kids to the mall, and white people would ask me, how do you get them to do that? I'm like, I thought they was doing tricks and turning backflips or something. I said, do what, man? She was like, they're so well-mannered. They're not running off in front of you. They're not yelling and screaming. Oh, you must've got me confused with you.
36:57I don't play that.
36:58Shannon Sharpe:You should tell him the story about that time that woman held that pistol to your head. Hell would I was well. She held a pistol to who head? Huh? There you go, Ocho. Man, why you telling our business, Ocho? Joe? My bad, my bad. My bad. He couldn't wait to tell Unk. I told you Ocho, she was having a bad day. She didn't even mean that. Ain't no, ain't, ain't. There's somebody you knew though? Yeah. Yeah, ain't no day bad enough for that day, Unk. Yeah, man, she was having a bad day, Joe. A girl, somebody you was dating? Yeah, I was, you know, we was kicking it. You said she was having a bad day.
37:41Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, she had a bad day, man. And - Yeah, I don't know what kind of day it is to have somebody do that. And I still, even when she called me a decade later and I picked up the phone and she like, she said, I'm sorry, it was my bad. And I was like, who is this? She said, you know who it is. And I was like, I said, I said to this day, I still don't know what I did. She said, you didn't do anything. Wow. because I was having a bad day and you weren't serious. You were just playing. So you had, you had. You had one of Faye Joe, she went up under there and got that 45, put that Faye to my head and say, hey, say N word, I'm gonna let you get your stuff and you get the H up out of my house and don't you ever call me again.
38:30Shannon Sharpe:You were laying the best pipe down in the red house again. Hey, hey, Joe, Joe. Now you talk about, oh my goodness, you talk about bad? Oh boy, she was stacked like dirty laundry in the dorm room. Yeah. Yes, Lord. Finding them frog hair. Why you wouldn't do right? She was about five foot nine and a half. She weighed about 165. I'm talking about solid. I'm talking about ain't no fat, no imperfections. Not a dimple, not a crease, not a roll, not nothing. Yes, sir. I'm talking about flawless. Why you couldn't do crack? Hey, thicker than a liquor store pickle. What? Joe. I already know it, boy. What you did wrong, huh?
39:27Shannon Sharpe:Harder than four foxes in the forest fire. You know what I did wrong and what I didn't do right. Like, oh, she... Man, she was... Man, look. And we had so much fun. We cracked jokes. I mean, she was amazing. I just wouldn't do right, man. I ain't gonna lie to you. I wouldn't do right. Sound like she was the one, huh? I ain't gonna do right. I wouldn't do right. I ain't fined a hole, y 'all. It was me. I would not do right back then. I would not. You young man, you young. Yeah. One time. Stiggin' and movin'. But I knew, but I knew, it was on me, because I was flawed. I was incredibly flawed. Yeah, we all are.
40:19Shannon Sharpe:Because you know, I tried to pull something sneaky. I was really sneaky. Yeah. So I was at my home, I was holed up in somebody else's crib. Uh oh. Man, I ain't never told this story. She found you. Wait, wait, wait, wait. Let me get comfortable now. Take your time. Take your time. She found you. You know what I mean? I got to go. You go and get me another drink. Oh, man. Go ahead, take your time. I'm ready, boy. This sound like a good one, too, boy. Hey, get comfortable, Joe. Oh, Joe. I got you. So I was on one of my bulljive tips. Yes, sir. Yes, sir. So I say, hey, hey, hey, check this out. My partner, she was in the Air Force.
41:00Shannon Sharpe:She was in the Air Force for like, probably like, I think she retired like 35 years. But I was in the Air Force. But I was like, look, I got somebody coming to town. I need to hold up at your place. Yeah. She said, cool. She said, that's perfect, because I'm going to be out of town. I wasn't even thinking. Wasn't even thinking. I said, ain't nobody know. But I had done one time before to this other person over there. But it ain't even dawned on me. This was six months, seven months prior. I ain't thinking nothing, I ain't thinking. So I'm down there, laid down like this here, you know, I'm on the couch.
41:40I hear the door open, I'm thinking it's a brother.
41:43Shannon Sharpe:I ain't think nothing about it. I'm down in the basement.
41:54Yeah.
42:03Shannon Sharpe:I just got big as I don't know what. What? Hold on, why she even came over there anyway? Cause she was calling me and I didn't answer. Oh. She figured, she deduced I could only be. A few different places. That's it. Man, she came down those steps. You had the girl over there with you? Yes. Oh!
42:34Shannon Sharpe:Hey, what happened? What she do when she see y 'all that? She say, let me get a swig of this, Joe. All right. Damn, unk! Did you cry? Nah. You gotta learn how to cry on cue, unk. You gotta learn how to cry on cue. I'ma teach you that. That's a little trick I got in my bag. She just say, come get your ish. Don't talk to me no more. That's it? That's it. Did you go get it? I did. What you want me to do, Ocho? You got a bag. You told me to come to get my ish. You got a bag, huh? Nah, man. Nah. I ain't got a bag. I think that was the start of it. That was kind of the start. Because she's like... The start?
43:27Shannon Sharpe:Shit, that's the end, boy. If you got to fuck with somebody else. I'm coming up with O 'Girl, cause this was the one that pulled the pistol on me. Yeah. Yeah. So she's like, oh, you ain't being up and up. You ain't being real. Right. Cause I was, you know, she hadn't been to Denver like two or three times. Okay. But I was, I wasn't committed to O 'Girl. I was just like, hey, you know, we see that we kick it, boom, boom, boom, whatever, whatever. Right, right, right. So, you know, but this one? Yes, sir. I think in my lifetime, I think from the time I started dating until I was about 16, until I think there have been about five, five,
44:13Shannon Sharpe:that were like the total package. I'm talking about the total package. I'm talking about I had it all. When you say, okay, they got a look. They got a presence. Because they walk into a room, oh, you looking. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. You, you, hey, they walk into a room. Yeah. You looking. Every head turn, huh? Everybody, I don't give a damn if they married. I don't give a damn if they gay. That's a bad mofo. Yeah, yeah. And they step like paladins. Hey, you know them horses? How they beat them? Man. I messed it up, Ocho. I messed it up. I ain't gonna lie. There's three for sure I know I messed up.
44:55Shannon Sharpe:I effed up. I was supposed to have been married probably about 25, 30 years ago. For real, for 1 ,000%. That was supposed to be, yeah. But I wouldn't do right, Ocho. I wouldn't. Because I was quick. Any questions, I'm out. Yeah. Where you been, I'm done. Yeah. You don't like that, huh? No. Yeah. One person could ask me what I've been doing, where I've been, and they got a response immediately. That was Mary Porter. She was the only one. You ask, I'm out, I'm done. You ain't got time for that. That started it. And I made peace with her. Once she called me back after the decade, she apologized, we good.
45:42Shannon Sharpe:It's hard to deal with them obligations, ain't it? Yeah, man. You could do something for a long time, but once you feel like you obligated to do it, it make you really don't want to do it no more. I don't. Ain't nothing worse than being questioned, Joe. Man, boy, what are you telling? Ain't nothing worse than being questioned. I hate it. I hate it. Especially if you ain't been doing it. We were kids. Where y 'all going? How long y 'all going to be gone? I remember my grandmother was like, man, I used to be saying as a kid, man, I can't wait to get grown. I ain't going to have to answer to nobody.
46:17Shannon Sharpe:Nobody. That was my thing on you. I want to get grown. I ain't realize all the responsibilities that come along with being grown. Yeah. I just think I ain't going to have to answer to nobody. Right.
46:29Hey, y 'all, you know what you should've played for, Unk?
46:31Shannon Sharpe:What? You got yourself in trouble? Yeah. You should've played that King George. What King George? King George, the song, Too Long. You know about that, Iso-Joe? You know about that, Joe? No, maybe if I hear it. I don't know right off the bat. Hey, Joe, Joe, you get yourself in trouble, man. You need a little wiggle room to get out of it? I ain't getting in no trouble, old Joe. I feel you, Joe. I feel you, Joe. Yo, hey, listen to that King George. The song is called Too Long. I'm going to check it out though. I'm going to check it out. I'm going to check it out. You going to like, hey, chat. Y 'all listen to that thing, now.
47:06Shannon Sharpe:Sometimes, Ocho and Joe, you know you get blinded by beauty. Come on, now. Man. Take your time.
47:15Shannon Sharpe:I already know it, boy. Man. Yeah. Yeah, I'm just old country boy from South Georgia, man. That's it. Ain't been a whole lot of places going up. Come on now. 51:20Shannon Sharpe:Don't miss Guns and Roses. People are, you always call me and say, man, people always ask you when they see you. Say, man, I heard your brother say this on Nightcap. Man, is that true? Is that true? You say that's the number one question that you get when people see you. And they're like, man, your brother said this about your grandfather. And is that true, man? Did your grandfather really say this? Did your grandfather really do this? Yes. When I see the clips myself, I usually comment like, yeah, he did do that. You know, he did say that. Like you told the story about granny hooking me in the eyelid, sitting behind her as she's fishing, throwing the pole.
52:05I'm like, that happened. I'm like, he kind of glossed over the story where you set the field on fire and then went back and told Papa that somebody did it. He said it was you boys. I got the punishment for that. You know, so it's interesting because you're three years younger than me. it's just interesting of the stories you remember and how you remember them with the accuracy of, you know, you couldn't tell about the beating that I got for you setting the field on five because you didn't experience that.
52:42Shannon Sharpe:Hey, but he used to, he used to tell it though, didn't he? Joe, let me tell you, if, if you want to know where the Lindbergh baby is, don't tell him. If you want to know where Amelia Earhart is, don't tell Shannon, because if Shannon know it, you don't have to bribe him. He going to tell it for free. He gives you up. He gives you up for free. Hey, I told a story. I was telling Joe and Ocho the story about we washed it. We washed the Pope. I gave us two dollars to wash the truck. You washed the body. I washed the tires. You take it from there. All right. First of all, Joe, we washed the car totally wrong.
53:23You're supposed to wash the car from the top down. We started from the bottom up. So by the time that dishwash detergent that we were using to wash the car, by the time I got to the top, you know, the brake dust and everything had already just eaten that detergent up. He came out there and looked at that mess. And he was like, boy, y 'all, first of all, he threatened us because he was like, boy, y 'all, y 'all know y 'all need your ass worth for doing this. That's the first thing he said. And then he was just, you know, because it was one of the few times that he allowed us to do something without instructing us.
54:03So it didn't go well. I don't even think we got the$2 because let me tell you something else. I don't know if Shannon told you guys this, but what he would do was is he would pay us$2 to wash the car and then charge us$1 to take us to the store. And there was no, you know, old joke. You know, you'd be like, hey, man, give me some of them Skittles and get me a Reese's cup. No, sir. There was no buying for somebody. If you didn't pay the dollar, everybody had to pay that toll. So he was a true.
54:42Shannon Sharpe:See, when I tell people that, they're like, man, it wasn't like that. He told me because he came out there because Spanky said, hey, go tell Papa we done finished with the car. Joe, I go in the house just like he instructed me to, just like a good little brother supposed to do what his big brother tell me to do. So I go get Papa. I said, Papa, we done. He come out there. He put his overalls on. He got one strap hanging. He come out there. He look at me. I should whip y 'all ass is what I should do. That's what he said. he said anything he said anything but yeah he was like man joe he was hold on you didn't tell him the one about about how he used to sometimes he would make you feel so stupid now for lack of a better word joe we washed the car now it's time to wax it So instead of saying, hey, go over and grab the wax, he says, hey, Spanky, go get that J-wax.
55:43Like, whoa, what's a J-wax? So I'm looking, Joe, I'm like this. So I'm looking at the J-wax. I'm looking at the wax, but I'm looking for the J-wax. Hey, boy, get that J-wax. Eat him up, J-wax. eat him up because it was it was so close to me if it was a snake it would have bit me but he he did things like that but it's amazing though that shannon has the memory being three years because when pop art died you would have been what nine eight nine eight i would have been nine my birthday and so for him to remember and he was not in the fire as much as i was i mean if i were to start a podcast and start telling these stories, these folks would arrest Barney Porter.
56:35They would dig him up and arrest his ass for the thing. Joe, Joe, this is, Shannon, you start back talking because I don't want to talk too much. But Joe, I used to sleep with him. Shannon slept with my grandma. I slept with him. He would wake me up at two in the morning, make me ride with him to the truck stop. He got eggs, grits, toast. he got the pancakes with the syrup he got coffee and he would look at me and say you don't want to eat this because you're going to eat cereal in the morning
57:12Shannon Sharpe:he takes Spanky to watch him eat Joe guys the reason he nicknamed me Spanky is he couldn't say Sterling so he was like that boy their name's Spanky I ain't calling him whatever that you named him I don't know where you get that fancy name from his name's Spanky And to this day, there's two people that still call me spanking. My brother and my homeboy, Calvin McNeil, are the only two people that call me that. Hey, what about we got in trouble for cutting the grass? Wait, which place? Because which is crazy now how we got in trouble. If he showed you a way to do something, you had to do it that way.
57:51So you couldn't cut. I'm like, it's cutting grass. So he. You can't get that wrong, though. Yes, you can. Yeah, because if he was going from the house to the well and you went from the road to the chicken coop or to the horse pen, he'd lose his mind. You know, it is now. It wasn't then.
58:21Shannon Sharpe:It wasn't then. Because he's going to come out, the first thing he's going to ask you, Who told you to do this? Hey, Joe, we got to push him over. We couldn't grab. We thought we'd do this. Hey, fellas, he asked more rhetorical questions than anybody on the planet. Hey, hey, who told y 'all to do this?
58:50Because I know if you answer this question, whatever answer you give is going to be wrong. and there was consequences and repercussions. For any answer you got, for any answer you gave, let me tell you. Yes.
59:06Shannon Sharpe:Hey, let me ask you a question, Frank. How was he about being late? Oh, no, no, no. Could you be late? Bro, you know, you said Harold Green is my best friend. Bro, the only falling out me and Harold have ever had was he was late coming to my house. Bro, we leaving, driving to Atlanta. He's supposed to be at my house at 7. he gets there by 7.35 bro I'm steaming the one thing Barney Porter was not going you wasn't going to be as late that's not going to happen to him he is not going to have you attempt to be late because if you don't respect Barney Porter's time there was consequences and there was repercussions it's always that way you were going to respect you were going to respect his time because you respected him he was that way He was definitely that way.
59:56But yeah, Shannon, boy, let me tell you. Boy, this podcast thing, I know you guys, man, y 'all doing a heck of a job, and I enjoy it. But Shannon, man, you talking too much. You putting all our business in the street. That's why our sister don't want him to write a book. Because, boy, he's like, look, Shannon, my sister got so fed up with Shannon talking about us growing up in a house without running water that she almost disowned it. Yeah.
1:00:23Shannon Sharpe:But see, Spank, when we tell them, because, you know, Grandma Lou had the old little house on the prairie, the prime pump that you pour the water in, and the water comes from the bottom. Yeah, we had to lower the bucket. And when I tell people that, tell my man, that's from the 50s and 60s. I say, how are you going to tell me something I experienced when I lived? I ain't telling you about the experience that I read about. I'm telling you about a little bit. Tell the boys about what we put in the well to keep the bugs out so we didn't bring up bugs when we brought up the bucket. What we put in there?
1:00:55Catfish. Put a catfish in the whale.
1:00:58Shannon Sharpe:Put a catfish in the whale? What'd that do? Catfish would eat the bugs. See, the catfish would come up and eat the bugs. So when you lower the bucket, you ain't gonna get a bucket full of bugs. You're getting pure water. I can't tell you if it works. I'm just telling you what we did.
1:01:17Hey,
1:01:21Shannon Sharpe:with Jim our first cousin Eugene brother sister kids we was walking up and walking towards Sammy Kirkland house big old red waltz beside the barn everybody and we you know what I don't know what made him Joe man let's see who can hit that waltz nest I'm the youngest Arnell is the oldest by seven Eugene is the next oldest by six Spank is the next oldest by three Land is two years older to me, I'm the youngest. This had to be, I couldn't have been no more than six. At least. I'm probably about six. So we taking turns. We trying to take Joe. We were firing at that thing, bro. And just right on cue, Eugene hit it.
1:02:04Shannon Sharpe:They take off. They gone. I take off, but it's a little bit too late. Man, they tore me up. Joe, they got me. They lumped me up, Joe. Hey, Joe. Hey, how'd it get you? He couldn't run fast enough. I couldn't run fast enough, Ocho. You got to realize I'm six years old. RL 13, UG 12, Spanky 9, Lady 8. Hey, fellas, he likes to talk about what kind of athlete he was. He ain't never had wheels, though. He was always a dump truck on the highway. He was always in the way. So I take off running. They stop running. They laughing. I run straight to the high because I won't get them in trouble. So by the time they get there, they coming in there, I'm out of breath.
1:02:58Shannon Sharpe:I breathe a hard time. Papa! Papa! They throwing the waltzes. You should have run. But Papa, I did run. Papa, Papa, I did run. You should have run fast.
1:03:13Shannon Sharpe:That joke, hey, he was very matter-of-fact. He did not have an empathy or a sympathy bone in his body. If he promised you something, set your clock back. It was going to happen. If he said, I'm going to tell your ass, well, he didn't tell you that. Or if he gave you that looking church, your rest of your day was ruined. Because you knew it was like, I don't know exactly when. but it's going to happen. You know, like on the fourth Sunday, man, was the time that we got a chance to work on our athletic moves because all our cousins would come over. Our aunts and my grandma would cook. So we eating, we eating cake.
1:03:56Oh, so we doing it up big, dog. We doing it big. Yeah, yeah. So you done forgot about the look you got when, when the pastor was praying or, you know, when, when, when one of the deacons, either Deacon Joe Schar or, or Nathan Maynard were playing. Nathan, you lost to Mr. – yeah, he took over Mr. Ligo. So when you kind of was nodding off that dozing because you should have gone to bed early, and when you – you know, when you wake up, you look. The first thing you do is look over in that Deacon corner to our left to see if he looking. And he looking at you and just, you know, amen, amen, amen. You don't forget all about it, boy.
1:04:37You get the brakes beat off you. About 9.30 that night, get the brake speed off.
1:04:42Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. Damn. He was different. And I think I thought Spank had the most of his ways. I think once we grew up and the way we was growing up. But now that I sit back and think about it, I think I'm more like him than Spank. You more public. You more public. And see, Barney Porter would have never done a podcast. Don't man. He'd have never done a podcast. Barney Porter would have never done a podcast with you two guys either. So there's two things that Barney Porter would have never done. And he always kept stuff close to the vips. Like, he would say things to us that he wouldn't say to other cousins or to his sons.
1:05:34because I spent more time with my Uncle Thurman, who was a farmer with him and him. So I learned how to be a man from them two. But you can say you are more like him, but Libby wouldn't say that.
1:05:50Shannon Sharpe:I think my matterisms, I think the lateness, I think the... But you're public. You're public, though. So you have a persona where you ain't like you know you ain't jovial all the time you ain't you ain't on nightcap you ain't on you ain't on nightcap you ain't on club shea all the time so you kind of have to be barney porter would have never done a pocket barney porter ain't ever coming out letting you know what he think he ain't never doing that he he and and if he don't like something he's gonna say he don't like it and he really don't care what your act or reaction is this is what he believes so if you don't like it you don't like it over there which is fine you you know there's a scene which is really crazy about this movie lean on me there's a scene where the assistant principal said you can't throw the the fire chief out and joe clark says yeah he's saying that too but you know where he's saying it?
1:06:57He's saying that in the parking lot. That's how Barney was. He gave you his mind and there was no retort or, you know, let me come back to you on that. This is my way and there's the road over there.
1:07:14Shannon Sharpe:Yes, indeed. Yes, indeed. Y 'all know how it is. Hey, they remind me. I'm telling you, remind me so much when I hear talk about his grandpa. It remind me of Nolan Richardson, bro. when I played at the University of Arkansas. Hey, man, it wasn't a lot of, you know, kiki, kiki, ha, ha, ha, pat you on your back, you know, good job. It wasn't, hey, man, it was not a lot of that, bro. I'm talking about when he came in, when he came in my mother's living room, said, you gonna send him to me as a boy? I'm gonna send him back as a man? That's what happens. Barney, we do this a couple of times at our golf course.
1:07:49We be sitting around, and they be like, talk about words you never heard your parent or guardian say. So I'm like my grandpa. Good job. Never heard him say that.
1:08:02That's right. Never heard him say that. Not to us. I'm saying to us. Never heard him say good job. Never heard. That was right. Never heard that. Keep doing what you do. No, whatever you did was wrong until he stopped doing it. Whatever you did was wrong until he stopped doing it. So I told Joe the story, the last probably the last two years of his life.
1:08:28Shannon Sharpe:How did Papa sleep on his knees? He couldn't sleep in the bed. So he he he he knelt down either on the sofa or in the bed or on the side of the bed. He couldn't sleep in the bed. He slept on his knees. Hold on. But why? But why he couldn't sleep in the bed? Honestly. And I usually don't say that because usually when people say honestly, they get ready to lie. but he couldn't sleep in the bed because he thought somebody put a root on it. Yeah, my grandpa, yes, indeed, my boy. Yes, sir. And I ain't going to, and I'm not even going to tell you that somebody came over, did some things outside his bedroom window, and a jar of frogs and lizards and snakes.
1:09:12I ain't going to even tell you all that popped up. And I ain't going to even tell you that the person that did this opened this jar and said, Barney, if you see how this frog is dried up, if that whole frog would have dried up, there ain't nothing nobody could have done for you. I ain't even going to tell you that. Because I know you're not going to believe it. Because us standing now, we don't, to this day, we still don't believe it. Do we, Shane? And that's what happened. That is a true story. damn you think stuff like that is real though roots okay now the bible i read says no so i'm gonna say no i'm gonna say that ain't real i'm gonna say that ain't true but in 1975 it was
1:09:58Shannon Sharpe:it was in 1975 yeah yeah because if you if the problem was is that what he says he believed that's right right yeah he believed it so people like man i ain't scared of the dead because the dead can't do anything. They can't hurt you. They can make you hurt your damn self. I tell you what you don't ever see. You don't ever see anybody walking through a cemetery at night. They're always in the hurt. You know, they're walking through a cemetery at night. Everybody always in the hurt. Always. That's a, and I told a story about when he got into it, and that was a, that had to be, that might have been 74, 75.
1:10:37Shannon Sharpe:When he was in the, because the front porch was like right here. His bedroom, his bed was right there. As you walk to the doors on the right. Yes. Yeah. And his brother kept thumping me. Thumping me on my head. And he had a saying, Ocho. He said, he detested it. He despised it. He said, if you thump a kid on his head, you'll make a weak head. And he wouldn't learn. Now, I ain't saying that ain't true either based on your grades in high school. So I ain't saying that ain't true. But no, he He was as adamant about that as being late. He did not play you. Hit the kid anywhere else. Do not thump the kid on the head.
1:11:21Don't do it. Which is really weird, but yeah, that was him. That was definitely.
1:11:28Shannon Sharpe:He kept thumping me, and I kept, I'm like, oh, stop, stop. And you could hear him. Joe, he always, he get up putting them Cobaralls on. You could hear the change in his pocket. He got that one strap. he come out there he said my folks one now he talking to his he talked to his brother he he talked to his brother we said you you hit that boy one more time and you know when he said that like everybody was like bristled because he wasn't threatening my grandfather was never really threatening like that and hey hey you hit that boy one thing hit that boy one more time and I and everybody like froze and I drew a blank because I had never seen that side actually that might be the only side the only time that that came out because I don't think he ever he and his best friend Virgil Wiggins I don't think they ever had any no I think I think that might have been the only time I've ever seen my grandfather mad and I'm talking about old school southern mad and And what y 'all won't remember is back in the day when old folks got mad, they handled it with a straight razor or a pistol.
1:12:45There wasn't no going outside throwing fists. They were getting ready to – somebody was either going to the hospital or to the morgue. They were getting it in. And I think that's the only time I saw Papa that was – yeah, he was done. Because –
1:13:00Shannon Sharpe:What did he tell him to go to – And Shannon was the baby. so he was a little bit he was a lot a bit different than how if he had been thumping me on the head my grandfather would have said work but but shannon was a little bit different too he he he made sure like if shannon would have had to go to the truck stop shannon would have got to eat what he ate um so Zach, nice vacation spot.
