In short
Steelers training camp live show. Main segments: (1) Darnell Washington (“Mount Washington”) discusses his offseason weight goals, Mike McCarthy’s offensive approach, his goals for 2026, and matchups he’s focused on blocking; (2) OC Brian Angelico explains his transition from defense to offense, his philosophy for exploiting defenses without reinventing the playbook, and what Steelers fans should expect; (3) Joe and Devo debate a quarterback-reps controversy involving Deshaun Watson and Shadour Sanders during practice.
Guests and backgrounds
Darnell Washington, Steelers tight end; Pat Freiermuth, Steelers tight end (joins later in the live segment); Brian Angelico, Steelers offensive coordinator with prior defensive coaching experience and prior work with Mike McCarthy; (also referenced) A-Rod/Aaron Rodgers as the Hall of Fame QB hosting weekly film sessions.
Key claims
Washington wants to be lighter for mobility; McCarthy is “tight end friendly” and hands-on in offensive meetings; Washington emphasizes route craft and trust with Rodgers; Angelico says the offense stays core-based while adjusting splits/motions to attack weaknesses; the show claims coaches/PR messaging about QB starters was inconsistent.
Notable examples
Washington cites route angles/back-shoulder throws vs low-hip defenders; Angelico references using 12/13/22 personnel groupings to avoid nickel and attack the boundary; the controversy centers on a report that Sanders would take most first-team reps, but Watson got them instead.

4:21Welcome back to this episode of Devo and Joe.
4:24James Harrison:I'm your host, James Devo Harrison. And I am here with my host, my co-host, Joe Hayden. Yes, sir. Yes, sir. Yes, sir. You good? You good? We're going to jump straight into it because we got our first guest. Yes, sir. Things got a little messed up. We'll get back to that later. But right now, we have Mount Washington. Yes, we do. Yes, sir. Yes, sir. Please welcome to the show. My brother. Yes, sir. Yes, sir. How are you doing today, man? I'm good, man. I'm blessed. Yes. Yes, you are extremely blessed, man. I think you collected a little bit of money, too. Big congratulations. I wanted to get to know you a little bit better before I asked for some of it.
5:05James Harrison:But, you know, time is short. So, you know what I'm saying? Look here, man. I know you talked about, you know, as the year progressed. Actually, just right now we were talking about it. and you wanted to get your body weight down to a certain number. And that approach, is that something that you just figured out through the course if you planned that, you know what, you feel better at a certain position or you're just like, you know what, if I could get lighter, I feel like I'll be able to move better, I'll be more functional, be able to do more at my position? Yeah, for sure. Definitely just last year at some times I felt a little heavy.
5:43So personally, you know, I just want to have a different approach this year. So, you know, my goal is by, you know, regular season, you know, be a certain weight and then just keep trying to climb down and just keep trying to get, you know, where my body feels right for me.
6:00James Harrison:Yeah. I tell you this, man. Whatever way that you feel comfortable, I think you should be able to play it that way. Because when you know when you've been able to move and with your stiff arms and hurtling over people. So whatever ways I feel like you get to do that because you were balling out. But with Mike McCarthy now being an offensive coordinator, what differences does he bring to the offense, you think, for you? For me, it's for sure a big difference. You know, personally, I never had a head coach in an offensive meeting room. So that's the first big difference I noticed off Rick. And just him being a tight end friendly guy, you know, our OC, you know, used to coach tight end back in the day too.
6:35So I just feel like this whole offense is just a different level compared to last year and, you know, years before.
6:41James Harrison:Okay. Okay. Yeah, I like that. So he's actually in the offensive meetings, and he's hands-on. I like that. I like that a whole lot. What would you say are your 2026 season goals for you, bro, coming into this year? Me, I don't like to put numbers on things. I just like to go out there and do just better. Personally, just do everything better than what I did last year. So, you know, that's just personally, you know, me. Like I said, I don't like to put numbers. So if it's dominated more in the round game or less drops or, you know, more yards, more catches, whatever it may be. So I'm just trying to improve in all the areas that I can.
7:22So A-Rod or whoever the quarterback, you know, could trust me and, you know, just depend on me.
7:28James Harrison:You know, I just want to be one of those guys. Thanks. How has that relationship with you and A-Rod developed, you know, through the course of from last year to now, you know, where you're at in training camp? And then, like you said, with the addition of Mike McCarthy, how has that developed? Is it an add-on to more of what you were doing last year, or is it a total mix? It's really hard to say. With A-Rod, just his time being here, he's an older guy, so when he hosts some meetings, like last year, for example, he'll host his own meetings with all these guys, and, you know, he'll call you out.
8:10So just make sure, you know, you're on top of your game. So, you know, I just try to be all ears and, you know, to be where my feet is. So if it's learning with A-Rod or even if we got his at his crib, you know, learning and watching family.
8:25James Harrison:So y 'all do do the way you go and you go to the crib. Y 'all sit down and do y 'all internal meetings and he goes over things that he sees so y 'all have a – y 'all can get that nice for communication in the game. Oh, yeah, that's correct. Correct. So, yeah, I just feel like adding him, keeping him, and then adding Mike, I feel like it's just a plus. Okay. I got a question for you. It's going to seem like a weird question. But, artist, linebacker, or the lineman, again, for you to block.
9:05It's a few. I start off with Darrius Smith.
9:11James Harrison:Yes. He's a bigger guy. Typically, I'm pretty much one of the biggest. So, my first time in the matchup, he gave me a good run. This past year, Chicago game, sweat. He was one of those dudes. I played whatever. But, and then, I mean, you got to throw Miles Garrett in there. You know, he's one of the, you know, good passers, a great passers in today's game. And then, I mean, you know, T.J. can be obvious. Yeah, yeah. Run blocking. Oh, run blocking. Anybody in there that you worried about at linebacker? I don't know. Yeah, yeah. I don't know why it should be. I don't know why it should be. Run blocking.
9:56I mean, besides the Darius Smith, the young dude on the Chargers, number 45, Wynne, K. Smolin, He was solid. Big moves. Other than I'm in.
10:09James Harrison:That's what I'm like. Listen, man, I'm trying to get you to let him know. Listen, man, ain't no trouble. If I'm walking around like Mount Washington, I'm not scared of anybody. Blocking anything. Come on, D-bro. Hey, D. So you proved yourself last year, bro, and I love the fact that you're talking about just not numbers having to be the increase. Just on tape, everything. Like, all pluses, no minuses on tape, man. So I think if you do that, like, that's a great mentality because there's no other way but to do better, you know what I'm saying? You got that in your mindset. Hey, which one? Pancake block or a touchdown catch?
10:44James Harrison:Hold up. Pancake block. It's for a touchdown. It's for a touchdown. Pancake block. It's on the bottom. I got to get that pancake. I got to. That was definitely like, you know, that's something my heart's on. So I got you. Yes, sir. Yes, sir. I like it, baby, man. We appreciate you having us. Well, sorry. We appreciate having you join us, brother. We'll let you get up out here. We'll be fine. It's short, but we appreciate it, man. Thank you for coming. I'm a female. Thanks, baby. Sure. Over here. Over here. Yes, sir. So here, man. That is my Washington. Come on. E. Tie the end. Watch out for the stiff hand, the shoulder.
11:24James Harrison:Put them big beakers on you. We're going to drive you. You got to watch this. We ain't playing no games, we see what you mean. All right? Look here. Let's look at this, though. Joe, what I need to check out is what Cleveland is doing. Oh, you can look up, my brother. Thank you, Joe. Listen, so Cleveland's plans change. I guess the boy. We got to have a real conversation now. Deshaun Watson and Shadour Sanders have been rotating first-team reps. Yes. And they won once Shadour Sanders is getting started. In practice, first in my offense, Hishan took every rep with the number one unit. Yeah. Hold up, listen.
12:05James Harrison:Keep going. You've got to give the whole breakdown. Hishan tore split the remaining reps. Yes. In fact, with the twos, Munkin said just minutes before practice that Hishan might team up with a 707 plus your door will take the majority of the one reps today. That did not happen. And a source told Mary Kay Catt, you know her name. Yeah, I love Mary Kay. Facts. Mary Kay is making facts. Sean Watson knew he would be the first team quarterback on Saturday before Todd Monkley told the media that it was Shador Sunday's day for the wounds. Joe, what's going on, bud? What y 'all got going on over there, Joe?
13:02James Harrison:This, this is the nonsense I'm talking about. This is the self-inflicted wounds that we do to ourselves. Coach Todd Munkin, we need to be PR trained. I think our coaches, they put their foot in their mouth sometimes. Look, we understand that. He's not putting your foot in your mouth. They said he knew beforehand. So he's lying. But I'm saying like, we've lied before. The GM has lied and said, like, oh, we're not going to trade. And then a couple months, we trade. He did this too fast. You said 45 minutes before practice that Shador Sanders was starting. And then walking out, you know he's not going to be starting.
13:40James Harrison:So if you just say, Sean Watson, I think I wanted to see him have a couple of these looks. I think he's going to be a starting quarterback today. Just say that so it doesn't bring up these questions. Do you know what I'm saying? Like, let him get the reps if he needs the reps. Listen, man, we don't talk about this later. And we got our OC in here. Brian Angelico. Hey, bring him on in. Let's go. Yes, sir. Let's. Thank you.
14:35How we doing? What's up, Joe? Good to see you, man. How you doing? Devo, how you doing? Pleasure to meet you.
14:41James Harrison:Yes, sir. Pleasure to meet you. Do better. Because I'm a coach, man. Yeah. Yes, sir. Tony and Candice, Nina and Lance, Spike, and yes, the chicken. We've played a lot of iconic characters over the years, but today we're showing up as ourselves to tell you about Podlandia, AO Rewatch, our brand new podcast. 16:14How did any of this get made? Why do we think that was a good idea? We're ready to talk about it. And we'll also be joined by the people who helped bring it all to life. Guest stars, collaborators, and friends, including director Jonathan Kreisel, the mayor himself, Kyle McLaughlin, legendary musician Amy Mann, and many more. Kyle is going for it here. You fully improvised, not just words, but a song, a melody. Well, I thought he was going to write, I thought you were all going to write a song. I remember you thinking that. Listen to Podlandia Ayo Rewatch on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
16:51On Solita, we share the messy stories of traveling alone as a woman. Your Duolingo is not going to come back to you when a man is inside of you. Oh no! I'm Julie Pinheiro, and I travel by myself because it's a rare space where I can say yes without asking anyone else first. I'm on a mission to reclaim the word Solita, trading the pity for possibility. Every time I tried to be alone, I kept meeting people and they were like, you smiled at us. Not a lot of people smile around here. I can wait four hours for the next bus or this random dude is offering me a ride on his motorcycle. It's when you're alone that you're most receptive to the world as it is and not the lies you're sold about it.
17:38So whether you're a solo travel veteran or you're too nervous to book your first trip, I hope you listen to Solita on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
18:12has kind of changed anyway too, right? What do you think it is now? It's images and words being spoken, captured by some sort of technology. Danny McBride. He loves Boba. Oh, that's fantastic. And you make it on, you make your own. That's great. I call him Taro Reed. That's a good name. They're all named after cast members of American Pie. Yeah. Oh, gotcha. I don't, I never looked up if she was in this, but I call him Leachie Sobieski. I don't think she was an American Pie, but I still like that. Haven't looked it up. Haven't looked it up. She was prominent around the same time. Then Mary Steenburgen.
18:48Why are you guys talking to me like, why are you talking so down to me that you think I don't understand your little play game? I just really am trying to set you up for success here. Listen to Hollywood Handbook on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. This is Chelsea Handler from Dear Chelsea. Every week, the news gets worse, the world gets crazier, and Yamanika is here to tell whoever's responsible, you're the problem. If you come over here to play games, I'ma check you, okay? If you do some in the news that don't sound good, I'ma play you. Join Yamanika Saunders as she breaks down the week's most problematic stories on her new podcast, You're the Problem, with Yamanika.
19:33Do you know I just found out who Sidney Sweeney was? New episodes weekly every Wednesday as part of my new network, the Dear Chelsea Network. If he got a bunch of women, then I should have a bunch of men. Do better or do less so I don't have to do so much. So join Yamanika each episode as she answers one question. Who's the problem? I'm Yamanika and I'm out. Listen to You're the Problem with Yamanika on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
20:08James Harrison:There it was, yeah. Yeah, 15. And you're here with the OC in Pittsburgh State. Brian Angelico. Angelico. Angelico. Good. I got it. I got almost. Yeah, almost. Doing better most. Look here. So, I'm here, like, I guess in 96, you were with the ethical? Yep. Linebacker. Yeah, started out on defense. Yeah, like, the transition into what you are now, a great offensive coordinator, a great mind. Like, do you ever miss the defensive side? Do you ever think about it? Yeah, I thought I was going to be a defensive coach. I coach secondary and linebackers. But I think it helped, you know, seeing that side of the ball for three, four years and getting a chance to go over on the other side.
20:55Yeah, definitely.
20:56James Harrison:The transition, getting an understanding. That's one thing that I actually didn't really pay much attention to, to be honest, as I was younger, whereas the players have an understanding and knowledge of how things work on the offensive side and, you know, having a better understanding that way you can actually help yourself on the defensive side. Absolutely. That's what we do. We try to pick the defensive players' brains all the time. Like, what did you see there? And that's what's great, the communication, the collaboration with them. So I always, even when I was a young coach, I would go to defensive clinics when I was coaching offense so you can learn what the other side's doing.

21:36James Harrison:How does it like reuniting? You were with Coach McCartney before. Sure. So how does it like reuniting? Is it a little different? Oh, it's been great. You know, obviously, you know, Coach went on to Dallas, and, you know, I was out doing my thing, you know, eight years later, but, you know, having a chance to grow and experience different things, and, you know, where Coach is taking the offense from when he left Green Bay. So it's been really neat to get back together and see what it's become. Yeah, I guess the previous, what, four years you were with Minnesota, right? Yep. Okay. That transition from Minnesota to Pittsburgh, what's the difference, if there are any differences, in the processing or just the organizational lead from Minnesota to Pittsburgh?
22:23Yeah, for me it's been an easy transition. I'm obviously blessed to be a part of a great organization here in Pittsburgh, and Minnesota was a great organization, treated the players well and the coaches well, and that whole family atmosphere. And obviously the Steelers fans are second to none. So that's been really neat. And I actually was at the University of Pittsburgh with Dave Wanstead from 2006 to 2010. So I just, instead of going right, I go left now. So, yeah, it was neat to come back because, you know, there's people I still got to know from Pittsburgh. So it was really cool to come back.
23:05James Harrison:Who was your inspiration, Coach, that got you started and the inspiration to be a coach? Yeah, I think, you know, I loved, you know, sports growing up. You know, your high school coaches and teachers, you know, they inspire you. So I was going to be a phys ed teacher and coach football in high school. That's what I thought I was going to be and played Division III football and baseball and wasn't good enough after that. So I'm like, all right, what am I going to do? I really didn't like studying. So I'm like, sports is what interests me. So I just went right in and was a graduate assistant. And, you know, I came from small college ball.
23:44I started and I was in Division III football for 10 years, coaching football and baseball. So it was, you know, I thought I was going to be there and take over as the head coach. But then I had an opportunity to join Dave Wanstead at the University of Pittsburgh and was fortunate enough to keep climbing.
24:03James Harrison:Yeah. Okay. Because he had some time in Pittsburgh. I mean, he had some time in Cleveland. Oh, yeah. He had some Gary Barnes to the program. Yeah, those were fun days. Yeah, I wish we won a few more games. Although we actually were in first place. 7-4? 7-4. We beat Cincinnati on Thursday night. Oh, man. Looks like we'll go to the playoffs. I know. And then injuries happened. And the NFL happens. NFL happens, exactly. Damn, man. God. Coach, as an OC, when you're looking at a defense and you're getting prepared to play against that defense, are you just going in and saying, like, this is what we run?
24:42James Harrison:or are you looking at it as what is it that we run that I see that we can take advantage of? Or is it a combination of both? Yeah, I think you're obviously trying to attack their weaknesses, where you can get the matchups that are favorable to you. But we're not going to reinvent the offense every week. We try to have a pretty diverse playbook where we can get the matchups on our terms, everything that we're trying to do. So that's really, you know, how can you exploit it? And where we're blessed is, you know, what grouping you want to play in, you know, where you have, you know, like guys like Darnell and Muth.
25:19And, you know, you want to play in 12, 13, 22, 11, right, to try to try to get, as you guys well know, the personnel grouping on the field. You want to be in base and sub and I want to go away from the nickel. I want to attack the boundary. So those are things you're trying to do and mixing people, moving people around. but ultimately you're running the core plays and then you'll have a play that'll be off of a play that you've shown on tape because you guys are you guys are studying that and so you know trying to get what their check is what formation what what's what splits get them in a sky check
25:52James Harrison:you know all that kind of stuff so that's all fun how many uh how many coaches uh oc's do you think actually come in with that mindset because to be honest with you man it's not it's not a lot of people that I've heard that actually think that process of how they're going to attack an offense. Yeah, I mean, I think they all do. I mean, I think there's, it's just what you're willing to do. Like, there's a philosophy, we do what we do, or we're trying to. Right, I get a lot of we do what we do. Yeah, and I think, you know, you have to do what you do. What you do, you have to do well. I absolutely believe in that.
26:29But I think it's the creativity of how you can adjust splits and dress it up and help guys get off releases with motions or stacks. Because you're going against those good corners. You've got to help the guys. You just can't leave them out there where they're pressed or they've got help over the top. So you're just trying to get ways to do that.
26:51James Harrison:Yeah, disguise. I mean, we try and disguise it as a defense. Y 'all do it with motion and different formation and try and build it instead of just coming out there and sitting in it. Over the years, I've learned, okay, yeah, this is the same thing. They just didn't come out in it. They built to it. Well, we in Minnesota with Justin Jefferson, like Jettas, they were going to have a plan every week for him. So it was like, how can we form it? Now the players get annoyed. You're like, oh, you're changing that formation to this. Well, it's the same play. We're just moving guys around. So there's that learning, but it helps when you need it.
27:28James Harrison:Yeah, definitely. Are you a sideline or a booth guy? I've been on the sideline as a position coach for the last 14 years, so I think we'll work through that as we get through preseason, what it's going to look like, obviously, going into the regular season. But whatever's best for us on offense, that's what we'll do. Okay. And, Coach, so say five years from now you're still the OC here. I know that's not your plan because you're trying to get to the head, Coach. I see it. I see it. But if you are, what would you want Stiller fans to say when they talked about your offense? Yeah, number one, we're a tough physical offense.
28:11You know, I think that certainly is what DNA of the city, you know, we're going to be a physical tough offense. We want to play smart, fundamentally sound football. I think taking care of the football and explosive, you know, big plays, creating big plays. I think that's how you score points. You need big plays. And when you win in fourth, you've got to be able to run the football. And that physicality and toughness has to be there. And hopefully they'll see that in our play style.
28:41James Harrison:Definitely. I'm loving everything Coach is talking about. No question. Coach, we know you've got to get going, man. We want to thank you for your time, man. I really appreciate you spending a few minutes with us. Hope you have a great season, man. Go out there and kill it. Listen, I need y 'all to come back with another Super Bowl so I can talk real crazy. Yes. You got it. Thank you, man. Appreciate it. Appreciate it. Appreciate it. You got it. All right. Yes, sir, man. You have a good enough, folks. Yes, sir. Look here. The reason we're in here now is because, like, the weather outside is frightful.
29:13James Harrison:Weather outside is frightful. I'm telling you It looks crazy out there It's bad We got the air set up Ah
29:26Okay
29:28James Harrison:Then you got Pat Then we got Pat Come on man Sit on up in here man We got We got We got Mount Washington already Now we got Fire moves coming through On this thing Come on man Inside Cause the weather outside It's frightening It's frightful Put my boys indoors We just watching some nice Football We were watching some nice football, man. We had a beautiful view, man. Like you saw the whole field down here. Everything. Everything was set up, man. Did they mic you up? I'm good. Come on in. Get back to my hand. Let's go, boy. Let's go, my brother. What's up, boy? What's up with you, baby boy? How you doing today?
30:02Great, man. How you doing? A little lightning? A little lightning alert? A little lightning alert? A little lightning alert?
30:08James Harrison:Mr. Fryer move. Yes, sir. Yes, sir. Yes, sir. Look here, brother. How are you liking the new offensive direction of Michael? I love it, man. It's fun to be a part of. I think it's cool how he utilizes all of us to what we can do best. Moving us around, it's been really cool seeing him, how he used me and Darnell in different situations. I mean, having another year with A-Rod, man, it's great, man. We're just playing fast. It's cool to see guys who come back, Darnell, me, DK, Jalen, Roman, like another year with the Hall of Fame quarterback like that. Like it's clicking and it feels great. Yeah, and my watch was telling us y 'all do a little sit-down session, I guess, what was it, once a week, whatever it is, actually with Aaron at his spot.
31:04James Harrison:And basically, you know, just to build that understanding, I think that's one of those things, as I was telling him, like you get that non-spoken, you know, communication. It's like, hey, you're seeing what I'm seeing. What we're seeing at the crib, like, here. 100%. That's the coolest part is, I mean, as a guy who's been in the league, what, 20-plus years now, like, on his off day, that's probably the last thing he wants to host people over at his house. But he hosts the whole offense over. He gets his food. We watch film with him. He sees what we're thinking, what he sees, what he looks at when he watches film.
31:33So it's cool to see how you can change how you watch film for a Hall of Fame quarterback. I mean, it's really cool. Oh, that's dope.
31:39James Harrison:Okay. You know what? I was just thinking something. With him being a Hall of Fame quarterback, and you being in New League as long as you have, is it anything that he has given you or said to you, given you a nugget of knowledge, where it's like, oh my goodness, if I had been doing that sooner, I could have been doing better. Maybe I left some yards on the field if I had done this sooner. 100%. Just the angles of my routes. The coolest part of him is, in my mind growing up, even early years, Like it's like, okay, I got to get from point A to point B. But like, no, you want to create some route craft to some vertical launch, some different angle points, working angles on the defender so you can, you know, make them think something and go a different way.
32:25So like that's the coolest part is just like understanding what he sees. It's like a defender's low hip and I'm running the corner out and he's low hip. He can throw you back shoulder. You can throw over the top. Just how to feel different leverages where he can throw the ball and you expect it. And I mean, that's when you get on the same point with that, you can't stop that.
32:41James Harrison:That's unguardable. 100%. You know what I'm saying? That's why they always say a good pass is always going to be good defense. You know what I'm saying? 100%. So loving it, being able to play with A-Rod for that long, y 'all getting that stuff in, that's good stuff, bro. Good stuff. So going into what are you expecting from you this season, brother? Because, I mean, last year me and Debo were always watching. You weren't like, I think you get some more time. I said, what's going on? Why are they getting in the game? Why are they using it? What are you expecting this season from me, brother? Because I know you are just, every time you're out there, you catch the ball.
33:10James Harrison:You're going to get the ball. you're going to get open, like being able to do that stuff. So just for me, from me and Debo's perspective, love everything you do and your personality, the way you are in the locker room, the way you play. What are you expecting from yourself, though, just coming into this season? I'm expecting a lot, man, from just myself as a leader of this team, you know, as a locker room guy on the field. There's so much that personally, like whatever happened last year, that is what it is. But like I'm using it as a growth opportunity to really this whole offseason. I was like, you know, there may be some things that were out of my control, but look at what I was doing, my process, and I changed some things up and really self-reflected, and I'm expecting a lot of big things from me this year, and I'm hoping this is the year that everything comes together.
33:48James Harrison:Yeah. I'm hoping this is the year that everything comes together. See, because I told Brian, I told you, oh, see, I need a Super Bowl so I can act real stupid. You know what I'm saying? Because I'm going to promise you, I'm going to make like I was in the game, and I'm going to figure out how to get me a ring, too. Hey, man. The coolest is just seeing the photos of you guys celebrating the Super Bowls downtown. Dude, just to experience something like that, seeing the people hanging off the parking garages and stuff like that, they do so cool. Dude, crowd surfing, you just jump in the crowd to catch you.
34:21James Harrison:It's great. They tried to steal Troy, though. I saw that. Yeah, we had to go get him, bro. We had to go get him. We're like, bring him back this way. Y 'all can't take him that way. What y 'all doing, man? That ain't the right thing. How are you boys doing, man? Good. Drew Allen. Drew's good, man. He's a good kid, man. When he gets more comfortable being around the guys in the locker room, it's cool to kind of bring him along, hanging out with some of the vets, just to kind of see what it's like to be a quarterback in the league. Because if you have that relationship with guys off the field, even defenders, they're going to want to pick your brain and relate to you off the field.
34:53So it's been cool. Drew's going to be good. I really like the rookie RJ, the safety there at 28. I've been going against him because we had a couple safeties down and stuff like that, but he has a lot of potential, man. He does. He has good pad level. He's hard to try and get surface area to get off and push off a little bit. He's going to be really good. That's good.
35:13James Harrison:So how was, we got Joey Porter Jr. My man, he's hopefully be getting him. Yeah, we got to get him paid. You know what I'm saying? Darnell. Darnell just back in. We got a really good nucleus of guys on this team. And I'm really excited for this year, for sure. So me and Debo are super excited too because the talent, like you said, talent's all over the place. And A-Rod coming back knowing that this is going to be his plan saying it. So, hell yeah. Happy for you guys. Hey, how much of that, knowing that this is the last year that you're going to have a Hall of Fame quarterback, how much of that is motivating you guys to be like, yo, we got to do everything we can to make sure we can catch that lightning in the bottom and go get it?
35:57I mean, that's probably one of our, it's not like we don't talk about it, but as an individual, like we all kind of look around, Like, me, DK, Ro, like, all the guys were like, hey, like, we got to be on top of our shit. Like, we got to do what we got to do for him, for the team. And, you know, we can't go out like we did last year. And Aaron definitely doesn't want to do that either. So we got to get back to the playoffs and make some noise.
36:17James Harrison:Come on, man. Y 'all heard a move. Y 'all heard a move. I ain't going to lie to you. I mean, my standard ain't too high. Worst case, I got 13 to 4. That was the worst case. That was the worst case. I got 13. I'm rocking with you, too. Week by week. Week by week. Week by week. I ain't got to go week by week. They don't want enough. They don't want enough. I know the answer. I can look into the future now. Yeah. I can do that. Yeah. I mean, worst case scenario, AFC Championship. That's just where I'm at. I'm not trying to put any pressure. No. That's the goal. That's the goal. I'm just letting you know where I'm at.
36:56James Harrison:So, if it don't happen, I want you to know. I'm going to talk great. It's going to be bad on the Instagram rules. I'm going to be scrolling. Moose. If he not. Listen, bro. So I'm pretty sure y 'all are going to have a live two items. And it's going to be 50-50. How much of an advantage is that? Hey, Portlandia fans. Kerry Brownstein and Fred Armisen here. You know us, or rather you know them. Tony and Candace, Nina and Lance, Spike, and yes, the chicken. We've played a lot of iconic characters over the years, but today we're showing up as ourselves to tell you about Podlandia, AO Rewatch, our brand new podcast.
37:41Each week, we'll revisit an episode of Portlandia from the very beginning, breaking down the sketches, exploring the backstories of our most iconic characters, revisiting the Portland locations you know and love, and opening up about our creative process. How did any of this get made? Why do we think that was a good idea? We're ready to talk about it. And we'll also be joined by the people who helped bring it all to life. Guest stars, collaborators, and friends, including director Jonathan Kreisel, the mayor himself, Kyle McLaughlin, legendary musician Amy Mann, and many more. Kyle is going for it here.
38:13You fully improvised, not just words, but a song, a melody. Well, I thought he was going to write, I thought you were all going to write a song. I remember you thinking that. Listen to Podlandia A-O Rewatch on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. On Solita, we share the messy stories of traveling alone as a woman. Your Duolingo is not going to come back to you when a man is inside of you. Oh no! I'm Julie Pinheiro, and I travel by myself because it's a rare space where I can say yes without asking anyone else first. I'm on a mission to reclaim the word solita, trading the pity for possibility.
38:59Every time I tried to be alone, I kept meeting people and they were like, you smiled at us, not a lot of people smile around here. I can wait four hours for the next bus or this random dude is offering me a ride on his motorcycle. It's when you're alone that you're most receptive to the world as it is and not the lies you're sold about it. So whether you're a solo travel veteran or you're too nervous to book your first trip, I hope you listen to Solita on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, this is Hayes Davenport. And Sean Clements. We host the podcast Hollywood Handbook.

The definition of what is a movie has kind of changed anyway too, right? What do you think it is now? It's images and words being spoken, captured, by some sort of technology. Danny McBride. He loves Boba. Oh, that's fantastic. And you make it on, you make your own. That's great. I call him Taro Reed.
40:11That's a good name. They're all named after cast members of American Pie. Yeah. I call, I don't, I never looked up if she was in this, but I call him Leachie Sobieski. Yeah, I don't think she was in American Pie, but I still like that. Haven't looked it up. Haven't looked it up. She was prominent around the same time. Then Mary Steenburgen. Why are you guys talking to me like, why are you talking so down to me that you think I don't understand your little play game? I just really am trying to set you up for success here. 42:39James Harrison:My watch on the side. And them trying to say, do I need to put in another safety or do I need to put in another D-liner because they can do one or both. Dude, this is going to be so awesome to see. It's great, man. It's great. Or do you just come to the line with an option? I'm going to leave this. Let me stop. Hey, don't say nothing. We don't know. I'm giving them too much. Don't say nothing. Don't say nothing. Don't say nothing. That's awesome. Oh, man. It's going to be good. How you guys like being back at La Trobe, man? Hey, it's great when I ain't got to practice. I'm not going to lie. The being away from it feels a little like I miss the boys.
43:19James Harrison:I miss hanging out with you. I missed that. But playing like the lineup, I'm looking at y 'all running into each other. Honestly, I'm like, I used to do that. We were crazy. We were crazy. Backstone backers, we don't have that issue. Thank God, man. Why not? You know? Healthy back. He know he got it in him. Man, I like that. That was the thing I liked about it, man. How's the practice? You still get the ends, right? Yeah, yeah. Grab grass. Tight ends. Yeah, tight ends. Outside linebackers. Yeah. One on ones. One on ones. OK. Yeah, we still do it all. Just we don't do back. I mean, I think they maybe have done it.
43:53It's not the same backs and backers. It ain't tight ends, outside linebackers. It's like I think they start off the line of scrimmage.
44:00James Harrison:We'll explain the drill to him. So the drill he's talking about is called, we called it backs on backers. So it was a run drill. And basically it was more set up for advantage of these cats because you lined up, head up, and they would either cut you off, reach you, or dry block you. And you didn't know what they were going to do until they actually did it. So in that drill, I ain't going to lie, I was damn good. Because you're swole. No, no. It's a secret to it. The secret is they don't listen. I say back off. They want to get tight to these dudes. I'm like, dude, back off. If you back off, you can see what he's doing, and then you can get to it and use your muscle now to push him.
44:38James Harrison:This, pop your hips and drive him. Everybody want to pull up tight. As soon as they pull up tight, I'm like, you, he about to lose. Yes, you know, as soon as he's tight. I would never dry block. I would never dry block. I'm like, hey, I'm going inside zone, outside zone. I am running off the ball. I'm not letting them let... I'm putting my outside arm when I'm throwing it. I'm not letting them get in. Because if they beat you inside, if they went inside, it's a loss for the defense because you have to set the edge. You got to get outside. I would just run off the ball and take off. Yeah. And I'm like, yo, do that.
45:09James Harrison:Like when me and Heath used to do it, like, dude, I'm like sitting back. I'm like, I know what he's gonna do. I'm like, I can look and see. And I would lean to the side of like, oh, he's leaning happy. He about to try and drive-block me. So like, I'll give up, like, I'll open my foot up a little bit and be like, all right, I'm gonna make it seem like I'm going outside. I just go inside zone. Because they read your foot, they read what you're doing. So it's cool to see the intricacy of that, like, one-on-one. And then, like, when they started doing that, I just sit back and I just, I watch the hips.
45:41James Harrison:Because you could do this and go this way. You can do that, but you can't lie with the hips. Hips don't lie. Hips don't lie, baby. Hips do not lie. Facts. Yes, sir, man. Look here, Fry, man. We want to thank you for coming on, man. I know you got to get up out of here. Appreciate your time. Look here. Keep your eye out for moon. You know what time it is. You know what time, man. He going to be pancaked. Pancaked it. And touchdown, baby. Love you, boy. Appreciate you, baby. All right, boys. Now, as we were saying, We had a great setup. It was beautiful. It was. Background. Everything. Whole practice still sitting there.
46:19James Harrison:Literally, Latrobe was looking. You saw Saint. It said Saint in the Grass. Saint. Looked beautiful. Looked beautiful. Thunderstorm. Hey, ain't nothing wrong with this, too. It's D-Go and Joe, though. It's D-Go and Joe. Look here. Anytime we on here, it look good. It's a beauty. What you looking at right now is beauty. She just... Hey, man. Beauty and the Beast. Beauty.
46:48James Harrison:This is what I was trying to say. When your coach, you come out, I just don't want, you're bringing unnecessary noise. You know this is what he's doing. Because it's like, if you were going to go start him, you have every right. You're not just a fly-by-the-rail kind of guy. I know that you knew that you were going to have to go to start Deshaun Watson before the practice started. So when you did that, why? Now you got me looking crazy in front of Deebo, that's like, they're going to Browns, doing that. Why would your coach say that? I'm like, that would make sense. I'm thinking there is a logical reason for this.
47:21James Harrison:But no, no, this is what I'm saying. If you are the head coach, and you know what you're going to do, just say that. That's my only thing. Because I'm like, I understand when you said, with Miles Garrett, with the trades, you got to keep stuff out of there, because you don't want nothing to come out. But practice is in 45 minutes. You're gonna literally sit there and tell everybody, oh, he's starting. And then 45 minutes later when practice comes, he's not starting. So I'm like, you could have saved yourself a bunch of just, like, if you wanna have Watson start, you're the head coach. You can do whatever you wanna do.
47:52James Harrison:Say what you wanna say, but like, if you say it, then all right bet, that's, we're gonna go off of it. You just blatantly lied to everybody. For what though? That's the only part that I'm not getting. If you want Deshaun Watson to be the starter, and you think he's playing better, fine. Cuz you're the head coach and you thinking that you see that, whatever. You got that right to do it. But to keep going, like to lie down? For what? You a grown-ass man. Who are you scared of? You want Deshaun to be your quarterback? Maybe, maybe. Say it and let him just run with it. He's a first-year head coach.
48:21James Harrison:Maybe it's not all his decision. Maybe it's coming from somebody else. Maybe it's from the gym. Maybe it's from the man upstairs. Because Boyd Hazem did say it was an opportunity that, you know, So it was no, it was an opportunity that he could be back next year. He did not close that door. He said it was. So how do you know that he's not able to maybe pull the strings as he wants to pull them? Maybe. I'm just saying. I just don't think the man is going out there just to blatantly just lie. I'm hoping that's not it. You know what I'm saying? But when you start having the owner talking about he's leaving the door open, you start speculation of this and that, and now he was supposed to, Shador was supposed to take all the ones, and now all of a sudden it's Watson taking all the ones?
49:25James Harrison:maybe it done came from the top. Maybe it did. But Coach got her, it just makes him look like you don't have, don't say nothing there. Like, you know what I'm saying? Don't say that you know who's going to be the starting quarterback before you go out to practice if you don't. Do you know what I'm saying? Like, it just makes, it just makes drama in the media for no reason. Like, we understand we're having a quarterback battle. But it makes it even more crazy when you say, oh, Shador is going to, this is his day to go start. And then he gets no starting reps. Why did you say that then, coach? Like, don't say anything.
50:03James Harrison:Like, say today's, because it's opposite, they've been switching, they've been getting different reps. And then you say he's starting, he doesn't start at all this day. Deshaun starts, and he's splitting reps with Dylan Gabriel, and Dylan Gabriel with the second team has more reps than him. So I'm like, I'm sitting here, coach, it's your team. If it's John Watson wins it, and you think he's doing better, or whatever. Let it be that what it is. Well, he said it was some formation, some huddle stuff. Yeah, some things that he wanted to see Watson do that, you know, couldn't have been done the next day or the next time they switched, Joe.
50:44James Harrison:You know that sounds crazy. You know that sounds crazy, though. I'm like, are you just flying by the suit of his pants? I feel like that. you're going to tell him 45 minutes before the practice that he's starting and he doesn't it's just me with that just don't lie if you can do what you want to do maybe he was going to start in his head maybe in his mind but it was already told that's why it was an insider that said Mary Kay she might have heard it from somebody else she ain't hear it from him she probably heard it from somebody maybe a little bit higher than him Maybe that was closer to somebody higher than him.
51:25James Harrison:But I'm saying, no, she talked to Deshaun Watson, which said that he heard that he was going to be starting before practice started. So then when he go out there and say. Who do you hear from? The coach. Oh, you heard from the coach? Yeah, the coach is telling him, yeah, you're starting practice. And then Mary Kay Calvins talks to Deshaun before. He's like, no, I heard 45 minutes before practice that I was going to be the starter. And then you go to the media thing and tell everybody, oh, yeah, Shadon's going to be starting. Deshaun already knows he's starting. Like, don't just say that then. Please, just don't say anything.
51:56James Harrison:Don't, see, Deshaun's probably starting. I have some formations that I want him to be playing about. I'm like, legit, say it. Don't say, oh, yeah, today's Shredor's Day. He started. And he doesn't start. Like, I don't care if he's not playing well, if Deshaun's playing better. It's just my, why are you making drama when it doesn't need to be none? Like, brother, just say Deshaun was starting today. And everybody would have still been cool because they're switching dates. I ain't trying my best. And that thing's going on. You're trying to figure out why, because that's what I was trying to do. I don't, I don't, I'm out of the way.
52:27James Harrison:I want everybody, like, I'm trying to give Todd Monk in the benefit of the doubt because he came in at the rip. It's a quarterback competition, da-da-da-da. Shadour's going to be getting his reps. Deshaun's going to get his reps. But when you come out and say today is Shadour's day and Deshaun already knew it was his day, and he gets out there and gets all the reps, that looks crazy to me.
52:49James Harrison:As much as I'm trying to. You trying to say something against what I'm saying. I'm trying to... I see why you stutter when you ain't got nothing. Yeah, because you just... I don't have nothing. Yeah, you just don't have nothing. You just have to agree. I got to disagree then when I stutter because you're right. You're right. It means you're right. You're right. You catch me stuttering like... You're right. You're like, look at him. He's stuttering like this. You're right. They causing a whole bunch of confusion where it needs to be none. Like you said, that's something that could have been cleared up right there before, A, hey, Shadour is supposed to start, but I need to see, you know, I'm going to need to see, you know, Watson do this, that, and the third.
53:28James Harrison:But I'm just telling you, that's just another example of the Browns. Browning, man. They can't get out of their own way. That's the only thing. That's what I – when things like this happen, that's what you can say to me. It's been like that forever. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. This one right here is just a little – it's off. Since they came back. Who's been the owner of the Browns since they came back? Mr. Haslam. Well, it was, uh, Mr. Haslam bought it in probably 6, 14, something like that. 14, 13. 14, 13. How many quarterbacks y 'all not had since then? A lot. A lot.
54:02James Harrison:Listen, man. Y 'all got a very, um, supportive base that ain't going nowhere. The fan base is not going nowhere. I just want. I think that's what it's about, man. This is the thing, though. We got a lot of them. The thing is, defense, we're still getting players. Offensive line's good. We're getting some squad. We're getting some players. So the quarterback is the main, obviously. But we got Shador. We still have him at the rookie contract. We still got Deshaun there. I just. I'm going to lie, Joe. I don't understand the concept of putting Watson in there. Unless, like Kazem said, he has the potential of actually saying, you know what?
54:44James Harrison:I'm going to sign this boy after next year if he plays well. Which means you no longer have a competition, and you don't get to see what Shador could do. And if you don't do that and then you don't sign him, you actually burn up a year that you could have saw what Shador did, which leads him closer to actually being a year closer to another contract. Just the thing, too. We're acting like once the season starts, if Deshaun Watson starts, I feel like we're going to be able to see both quarterbacks anyway.
55:17James Harrison:So, we'll still see. We're going to see who ends up being the quarterback after the second preseason game. Once they finally announce the starter, obviously. You've got to announce the starter. You've got to announce the starter. The second preseason game. Got to be. Because ain't nobody going to play in the third. The starter's not going to play in the third. No. Because it's only three. This is my thing. if Coach didn't just say that Shador was going to be, I'm not trying to just bully Coach to be like, no, you got to start Shador. If there's a really legit competition and Coach thinks, like, they're kind of the same, you know what I'm saying?
55:51James Harrison:Like, I don't know, like, Shador hasn't played good enough to literally take the spot from Shador. If he's going to let him play, then it's not like I'm trying to bully Shador to play, but I just want Coach to just obviously try to win, make the best quarterback play that you think is the best, and just don't, don't laugh. The line, the line got you. It's all right, Joe. They got me, Deebo. It's okay, Joe. Hey, Portlandia fans. Carrie Brownstein and Fred Armisen here. The dream of the 90s is alive in podcast form.
