In short

Steelers preseason QB competition, offensive line concerns, and cap/contract timing for Joey Porter Jr.; plus Cleveland Browns quarterback controversy, NFL Pro Bowl changes, and a new rule affecting players who return to college.

Guests

Matt “Deebo” Harrison (host) and Charlotte Bass (guest). Bass is a Pittsburgh native, Eastern Michigan Hall of Fame quarterback, former Lions QB, two-time Super Bowl champion, co-host of the Snap Count podcast, and founder of Best of the Batch.

Key claims

Bass says Will Howard showed good West Coast-system tempo and resilience after an interception, but may be dealing with rib/head injury issues and the Steelers’ offensive line looked “spotty.” Drew Allar showed strong arm strength and improving footwork, but the offensive line still needs to gel before the season. Bass argues the Steelers likely won’t keep four QBs on the 53-man roster due to limited practice reps. He believes DK Metcalf’s cap restructure likely aims to create room for Joey Porter Jr.’s extension, but negotiations are constrained by PUP/cut deadlines.

Notable examples

Bass discusses tight Buffalo Bills stadium end-zone corners as a potential injury risk; he references a past Saints injury tied to limited runway. He also covers protests on the Jim Brown statue over Deshaun Watson’s signing, and the NFL ending the traditional Pro Bowl game in favor of an 88-player honoree celebration.

07How you doing today, Joe?

13Let me tell you something, Debo. Debo, it's my time real quick.

24Welcome back to this episode of Debo and Joe. I'm your host, James Debo Harrison. And I am here with, not my co-host today, guys. But we do have somebody for you guys. Okay. What we have here is a surprise to y 'all, all right? We got a Pittsburgh native, Eastern Michigan, Hall of Fame quarterback, Matt, Hall of Fame quarterback, former Lions quarterback, still is quarterback, two-time Super Bowl champion, co-host of the Snap Count podcast, founder of Best of the Batch, and today's guest co-host, on the Deebo and Joe show. Charlotte Bass, how you doing today, brother? Man, I am doing well. Even better now than I'm here with you.

18Getting ready to talk some ball and everything else that comes along with it, man. So I appreciate you having me today. Yes, sir, man. Thank you for coming on. Look here, man. I know you just got home. It was about three o 'clock this morning doing a TV broadcast over there at Buffalo Bills, a new stadium. How that stadium looks like? Stadium looks unbelievable, man. It really does. And they did a really nice job of all of the details inside. The only thing that concerns me with all everything that comes along with that stadium is the back corner of those end zones. It is really tight. So if a DB or sorry, a receiver is running a corner route into that back pylon, there's not a lot of runway for you to slow down.

58That's going to be something that I'm going to pay attention to up there in Buffalo. But outside of that, man, everything else look fantastic, man. They should be proud up there in Buffalo. okay okay how well it's shorter than what they had originally like the old stadium was 70 000 and that now i think it's 60 000 so they eliminated those 10 000 seats they brought everything closer and it feels like the fans are on top of you uh right behind the bench but it's just those small corners in the back of the end zone right where the tunnel was at so if you're going down and And Hinesfield is a little bit, I'm sorry, Akashore, is a little bit more runway off of it as you're kind of getting ready to walk up the tunnel.

39In this particular case, those are very tight. And I wouldn't even think that it's 10 yards that they actually have to slow down on those back corners. Look at it to say, man, if you're running a fade route, that's one thing. But if you're running a corner at full speed trying to go get that ball with a DB chasing you, of course, as he's slowing down. That's not enough. Yeah, he's going to, you know, he's going to naturally put his hand on it to try to stop. But that momentum is going to take both of them into that wall. I hope they have a little bit of extra padding that are in those corners because that could be a potential problem.

12Kind of reminds me of whenever, remember when the Saints had theirs and there was not a lot of runway, but the Saints had concrete around the back of the benches? Yeah. And it wasn't until Reggie Bush didn't have enough runway and slipped on it. I think he got injured right at that particular point. And from that moment on is where they turked it all the way around. So I'm hoping that that's not the case for these players, but that's something that they have to kind of take a look at. Maybe just put some extra padding there to make sure that these players are safe. Yeah, I mean, you got to take that into account when you're doing these new stadiums, man.

46It's a lot more runway that's needed, especially with these athletes getting faster and stronger. You know what I'm saying? So, but look here, man. My Steelers are Steelers. I can say are Steelers. I'm used to saying my because, you know, the other guy. but our still has ended up losing 20 uh 28 to 27 uh last night in the preseason game we ended the season and what is it one and two um considering uh obviously you played the position for a long time and and looking at what we have going on here with the with the quarterback situation um I'll start with Will Howard how did you think he played last night I thought Will did some really good things he was able to get in and out of the huddle always pay attention because in this West Coast system, it is very wordy.

33And you have to be able to now get into the huddle, get to the line of scrimmage within that 15 seconds. He was able to do that. There were a lot of passes that he was able to drop the liver on time. But as the game went on, man, he was taking some shots. And that offensive line was a little spotty. And as he was releasing that football, man, he was on the ground. And I'm pretty sure he's going to be sore today from one of those rib injuries that he potentially had. and I think later on or right before the first half, he ended up getting an injury and I think they deemed it maybe a head injury or something to that effect.

06I don't know if he's in the concussion protocol, but those are the reports that are coming out here today. But I thought overall, he showed the grit. That's exactly what you want. On the interception, was able to bounce back, get in and out of the huddle. But those are things that I like to continue to see and I just appreciate the fact that when he did have an opportunity and Dr. Bradley came over to him and he's trying to talk to him and possibly remove him from the game, Will said, man, get away from me, man. I got to play. I got to play ball. And he wanted to be out there with his guys. Yeah, yeah, definitely.

34Um, I'm, you know, for me, I would say, I would say it was average, you know, um, it wasn't, uh, I don't know. It seemed like maybe that interception was maybe a miscommunication of exactly, you know, what it was that, or where, you know, dude should have been. Uh, but I guess all in all, the biggest issue all night is our offensive line, brother. I'm a little worried about our offensive line, but, you know, we'll get into that. Also, Drew, how do you think Drew did? I thought Drew did okay. The people he was playing with struggled a little bit by getting open, a couple passes that should have been caught.

12I think overall, you know, he played a pretty good game. And if you just look at his arm strength, man, this dude can throw. And if he is going, he probably has to be the top up there with between him and Aaron is right up there at the top. And we know Aaron has, you know, that's a story by itself as it relates to his arm strength. But Drew is right there and he's dropping, delivering. And that ball is getting there in a hurry. And that's something that you want to see. And that's a good thing that you have with him because the arm strength wasn't a necessarily issue for me. It was about the footwork.

42And can he now translate what he was doing in practice into games? And it looks like the footwork is right there. There was only one play that I thought that maybe he could have set his feet to make the throw. and that was on a two-point conversion. When they did that, he was fading and kind of just didn't – he had a chance to set his feet, but he was backpedaling and it was a little bit inaccurate and they wasn't able to pick up that two-point conversion. But I'm with you, though. That offensive lineman, they have to figure out what they're going to do because you're about, what, 15 days away from the regular season and they still have not named a starting five.

18That group has to gel together and that is a concern for me as well. Yeah, yeah, definitely. That's a big concern. But, you know, looking at the quarterback situation, who do you think makes the team? Because, you know, I don't know if we have room for all four just because of the roster spots that it taken and with our offensive line struggling right now. I don't know. And then when you look at it, I think Mike McCarthy had said when he was asked about the possibility of keeping four quarterbacks or were the four quarterbacks worthy of making the 53, his response was that's a very accurate evaluation that he thought that all four could stay.

08but I don't, like I said, I don't, I don't think we could, we could keep all four. How do you see it? Where, where, where do you see, you know, once we start the season, you think we have all four, do you think it'll, it'll be, it'll be three? It's great in theory when you hear Mike McCarthy say that. Yeah, absolutely. I would like to keep four, but it's, it's, it's not a reality. And I look at it and I've been since, since the off season, when we started talking about it, I still think it's 0%. You can keep these guys on the initial 53 while all the other organizations build out their rosters.

39And then at some point, as you get closer to a game time in week one, then maybe it's kind of slipped that in there when all the roster spots are taken to hopefully get him back, get one of those quarterbacks on the practice squad. That's going to be something that really is tough. And here's and let me give you the scenario. James, if you had a backup that you knew that was taking your job and there's four periods in practice and you're running with the starters, how many reps are you taking out of those 10 reps? I mean, it's not it's not too many, if any. Right. But if you're but when you're a starter, you're taking all of those reps.

15No. Oh, you're talking about. I thought the starter. Oh, yeah. You were the starter. You're got to get you're taking all of those 10 reps, right? I'm going to get at least eight. So again, if I'm now trying to compete with you, I'm getting two reps to get evaluated on. So if there's four periods, that means I only get eight reps of practice. And generally, Wednesday and Thursday, that's 16 reps. Now put another quarterback in there, that means now they have to split. Hey, how many reps did you get, CB? It wasn't many. When I was the backup, I got more reps. If I got to number three, then you barely get any reps throughout the course of practice.

49And that's running scout team. There's no way that you can add another quarterback into this to now figure out how you're going to split the reps. This is not training camp. You're going from 90 to 53. That means if whoever running scouting, some of those starters have to be on a scout team in order for that young quarterback to get reps. I just can't see that happening. So, yes, they could potentially be on a 53 keeping for. I just don't think when we get to week one that there will be four quarterbacks as they approach the Atlanta game just because there's not a lot of reps to develop these young quarterbacks.

21That's why I say a zero chance of having 50, having four quarterbacks on your 53 man. And then on top of that, Debo, that means now on game day, you have three spots that are inactive. Gone. Yep. Yeah. Yeah. Gone. You know, like I said, I'm with you. And I mean, like you said, it sounds good. But, you know, of course you want to have and instill confidence in all the quarterbacks that you have and the possibility of them being able to go out there and start. But the reality of it is it's not really much of a reality. And like you said, with the season starting, you got it. You got to get it done.

59And with the season starting, we have a possibility of where the Steelers, you know, could could possibly sign Joey Porter, I guess, because yesterday they did some restructuring of DK Metcalf's contract. track. I think they freed up, I guess it was almost 18 million in cap space. And a lot of fans are anticipating that that move was to pave way for Jory Porter's extension. So with that happening, what do you think is the process? Because I actually ended up looking at some stuff and it um I don't like to you know count my chickens before they hatch but the Steelers kind of needed to create some cap space because off-season rules state that you only have to count your what top 51 uh highest paid contracts that actually go against the cap so once the season starts it's now 53 players plus your practice squad and then you have your IR players that have to go into that I mean it's 20 million dollars of space that they created um I'm just being uh I guess devil devil's advocate a little bit and um not wanting to get ready for something that I don't know uh is going to happen especially when you look at what we were talking about last week where he hadn't even had a guy to offer yet, you know?

31So what do you read into this? I'm on the fence here and I would like to be optimistic because you're like, Oh yes, they're freeing up some money, but am I next? Then again, why did you wait this long? We could have talked about this in the off season, you know, earlier in the off season. So when you have a self-imposed deadline in the manner that we have here and, you know, Sunday decision has to be made because you, he's still on pup. And if he's still on PUP, are you going to keep him on there? or are you going to remove him from there? So if you remove him from PUP, that means now you still got to get a contract done.

02If he's not practicing right now, but that self-imposed deadline is the Saturday before their first game. And once that happens, the Steelers generally don't negotiate contracts once the season starts. So it's all going to come to a head in these two weeks. I'm hoping that it gets done, but there's not many options right now over the next 10 days by either getting it done or something on Sunday is going to have to occur as it relates to getting it done or maybe they move on and a trade happens. I just don't get a feeling. I don't know either direction. I've talked to both sides and I just don't get a sense of where they both are as we're sitting here three days away from cuts.

33I'm on a mission to reclaim the word solita, trading the pity for possibility. Every time I tried to be alone, I kept meeting people and they were like, you smiled at us. Not a lot of people smile around here. It's when you're alone that you're most receptive to the world as it is and not the lies you're sold about it. 20:12Hey, this is Hayes Davenport. And Sean Clements. We host the podcast Hollywood Handbook on the Big Money Players Network. Our show is extremely accessible to first-time listeners. Each week, we talk to someone in show business, a.k.a. the biz, and try to help them with their careers and see what they have to offer us. Everyone has a good time, and no one gets mad at their publicist for letting them do our show. We've had a lot of great guests like Sarah Sherman. Not that great. Actually, can you help me shape this? How about we flip it on his head? How about we flip this around? What if the surprise woman who actually you think is the straight man is actually the one who's acting weird?

51Adam Scott. This entire time, you've been expecting Adam Sandler to come to visit the show. I would never set expectations for something like that to happen. If the universe allows for something like that to happen, I'm open to it. I'm always going to accept. You know, Danny McBride, fine. Yeah, it's all this fragile masculinity exuding. I could smell it walking down the hallway, to be honest with you. I was like, is that weed? Nope, it's fragile masculinity. Ben Stiller, no. Because a lot of times, out of context, people don't get it or even know what a circle is. You know what I mean? Like, they're like, oh, what's a state?

36Everyone's so dumb except for you. And fake. Right, fake and also not interested or just like, oh, I've got my life. I don't care about your life. And a lot of other big shots that wouldn't be where they are without us. Oh, and by the way, Will Ferrell told us personally he loves the show and he wants to be a guest on every episode, but he's just so busy. This time I'm diving into a rabbit hole of peptides, organoids, blood boys, blue zones, and brain replacement to try to understand what this longevity obsession is all about and what it really means to live forever for all of us.

19I learned about some rad science. I can make a brain for you and then we can test what draw is the best for your brain as opposed to his brain. Here are some hard truths. I would expect Indians to age faster, but I did not expect it to be almost a four to five year acceleration. And get myself into a world of trouble. I'd say probably start bone smashing. 23:01Our town is small taters by most standards, right? But to the people who grew up here, it's everything. What happens when a quiet Tennessee town becomes the front line in a battle over the future of America? Developers with right-wing ties have purchased hundreds of acres of land in the area. The first thing you see when it pops up is pioneers in Appalachia. But they weren't just planting houses. We need cities on a shining hill that exemplify and embody the Christian way of life. Stop right there. Is that normal? A podcast about what happens when a small town becomes the site of a social experiment.

38God need men to rule. Great. And decides to fight back. Do not use my hard work to sell your bull. They're not just opposing what's being planned for here. Our hometown is not a test tube. They feel like they're standing in opposition to an entire administration. Guess you didn't move in on a bunch of dumb hillbillies now, did you? Listen to Our Town on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Yeah, that's not a good feeling to have, especially with one of your prime players on your defense, on your team. But I guess we'll find out time to tell, and we'll see. Hopefully it's good news, but we don't know.

23The Browns, though, they went over here and they put a little ooey over there on the Patriots, 37 to 13. Dylan Gabriel, he came out there and he played his ass off 12, 15, 186, three tutties. Dude, like, it's crazy. But this is why I really don't count too much into like weighing that preseason stuff. You know what I'm saying? I don't know who was out there, what was going on. But from what you've seen from him, this last game, do you think people have an argument to say that he should be fighting for at least a number two position as a quarterback for the Cleveland Browns? I don't think that's necessarily the case.

09He played last year, has a lot of game experience, but where they are right now from an evaluation perspective is Shador and Deshaun Watson. And those two are your top two. Yes, he had a really good game. And I'm looking at it as I watch watch those highlights. It was a guy playing for his career because if he doesn't go out there against that defense and put up those numbers, they can say, wait a minute, you're not the quarterback who we thought you were and potentially move on from you. But it wasn't the case. He solidified his roster spot. But I think it's going to come at three. I think I just think when you look at the Cleveland situation, Shador, I think he has a little bit more of an advantage right now over Dylan.

49But the reason why Shador is not starting is because Deshaun Watson is owed guaranteed money this season. And there's no owner that's going to allow him to sit on a bench and collect his money. So that's why he's going to be the week one starter. Doesn't mean he's going to end the season that way. And then things can change as that quarterback rotation goes along. But back to your original question, I do not think that Dylan will have his name into the hat that overtakes your door for number two. Yeah, I don't I don't I don't see it happening either. I'm with you on that. But they still got more problems over there in Cleveland.

24I guess according to, I guess, ESPN, AP report, someone took multiple signs and put them on the Jim Brown statue outside the Brown Stadium in protest of the organization's decision to start Deshaun Watson. We got some photos right here. Go ahead and put them up. So I guess one of the signs that was attached to Jim Brown's statue said 280 million, 27 plus victims, zero supporters. Another sign called for Watson's presence on the team, called Watson's presence on the team, a permanent damage to the city and franchise.

16I know it's not anything right now that I think that he could really do. I thought it was$230 million.

31Well, it initially ended up being 24 women that ended up following the civil lawsuit. He denied all the stuff. they had actual two grand juries that declined to indicting he was never criminally charged but the nfl did find that he violated the personal conduct code under their definition the nfl used a different interpretation and basically what it came down to is all they needed to do was establish that it was more likely than not that this stuff had happened and chuck you and i know where is that much smoke it got to be a little bit of fire okay and i know he wasn't criminally charged because when you do the criminal charge it's beyond a reasonable doubt so obviously there was doubt that's why he wasn't charged with it but that doesn't matter but what i want to go to is you put this on jim brown's statue the man who is the greatest running back and player for the Cleveland Browns y 'all have ever had.

36One of the best running backs to ever do it in the NFL. He led the league in rushing eight times. He only played nine seasons. He had 12 ,312 yards rushing, 106 touchdowns, three-time NFL MVP, and helped Cleveland win a championship, an NFL championship in 1964. That's just his football accomplishments, okay? And he is one of the first black superstar athletes, dude, to use his status for the Civil Rights Movement, okay? You can look it up and see all the things that he did and everything he was involved in. Now, we're talking about the 60s. He played from 1957 to 65 when this country had legal segregation, dude.

34Like, and I mean, you had actual presidents, dude, that ran a platform on segregation. He put his life at actual risk to try and better this country. Like, this is the same man that helped broker a peace deal with the Crips and Bloods. Like, what was that? The 1992 Watts gang truce in L.A.? designed to reduce gang violence. Like, his status is more than football.

08And, like, dude, for you to actually go and just throw that on there, like, I hate Browns. I wouldn't say hate. I dislike Browns players. But Jim Brown is something different. You could have put that sign anywhere, man. Like, you had a whole backdrop over there you could have put that sign zone. Like, it just don't make no sense to me, man. How do you feel about this, man? It's tough. Everything that you just mentioned, it just tells me that maybe there was a younger generation that wasn't as familiar with everything that you just talked about as it relates to what Jim Brown's bio is. But, you know, he's in that stadium for a reason.

47He is the icon of that organization. Maybe they're putting it on there to maybe put visibility there because they know people now will gravitate to that statue and it's going to get more eyes on their sign. That's the only thing that I could potentially say with that. I know the Browns fans are frustrated because they haven't had much production over the last four years with Deshaun Watson. But again, there's always due diligence that come with the organization. They were fine with everything that happened because they guaranteed his deal. And anytime that that happens, and we know the security – uh teams that all of these organizations have they start doing background checks from the time that you are in elementary school all the way through so they have that information so the browns are comfortable with that so yeah you'll still have some people that are frustrated with it with those signs i just think it was wrong to put it on that particular statue because you should not include jim in the same manager talking about the sean yeah um i'm pretty sure i'm not gonna even put this on the Cleveland fan base.

48I'm gonna put this on somebody that just didn't have a whole full comprehension or understanding because there's no way that you would do that with the knowledge that I have, you have, that a lot of people in my generation have. So I'm gonna have to agree with you that it gotta be somebody that didn't fully think this out because if you fully thought this out and that was your option, you are uncouth. like just go out there man take the stuff down and put them somewhere else today just do it just do it today you can throw them on all the stop signs around cleveland if you want to that still ain't gonna change the decision that they done made about starting watson and and you can't take back the money that you already got like i understand you upset but try try try a different way man you could protest but don't do it on jim please absolutely and i think that's where you know you get people get upset because they think the decision was coach munkins the head coach there about his selection of the quarterback.

48It's not his selection. Todd Munkin, who I've known over 30 years, and I don't even know if you know this story, Debo. Todd Munkin was my receivers coach at Eastern Michigan back in 1995, 96. That's how far me and him go back with Munkin up there before he went on in the coaching tree in the manner that he is now. So I know how he's wired. He knows offense. He knows ball. The challenge is he could have felt that maybe Dylan, maybe Shador were better quarterbacks, better prospects for long-term future as it relates to who the quarterback is going to be after this season. Unfortunately, when you have these conversations that are happening, Coach Munkin has to now absorb all of that energy that's happening from the fans because the decision is above him.

35The owner is telling him who's starting. There's no way in heck. you're what he's doing 45 46 million dollars that he's paid this you're guaranteed again the owner's not gonna have i don't know charlie we talked listen me and joe talked to the gm andrew barry of cleveland browns and he said the money of what he's getting paid is not going to affect and will not affect their decision of who is going to be the starting quarterback no and that's fine but again he is now taking that responsibility because he has a general manager role there's no general manager that's going to stand up on a podium that's going to say, you want to know what my owner told me that I have to start him?

15It's like, no, they're going to say it's my decision. But when you look at what's happening, because if it wasn't about money, Deshaun would have been gone, but you can't cut him. This is true. You can't cut him because that means now you're 125 million and did cap space. So that argument doesn't hold water if money was not a factor. So that's all I'm going to say on that particular case because, again, at this time of year, general managers, coaches lie because nobody is going to put them, throw their owner under the bus. It's just not going to happen. Okay, I'm going to go ahead and slide up off that, baby.

52Look here, man, the NFL, they ditched the Pro Bowl. The league is doing away with the annual All-Star Game beginning this season, instead opting to name a 88-player class to the Pro Bowl with no replacement selections and honor them with a celebration. The NFL revealed the change Wednesday in a press release, noting that Pro Bowlers would be invited to an in-person celebration in Los Angeles the weekend when the Pro Bowl games would be traditionally held. Bruh, I'm going to tell you this. like i'm i guess i'm cool with it i'm more than cool with it like like when you go you like when i first went to the pro bowl so i'll give you that story so personally for me you know they should have did away with this thing a long time ago the first time i went there because when I first went there in 2000, it was 2007.

57So it would be 2008 season. It wasn't even a real game then. Like, you know, when I made my first Pro Bowl that year, you know, I was like, okay, they had the player competitions and all that stuff, you know, where you go in there and you do like the 225 rep stuff and all that stuff. Right. So I'm getting ready and, you know, I'm like, yeah, I'm going there and do the, you know, 225 rep test that I'm trying to, I'm trying to, kill i think it was like 43 or something that i think it was um somebody did some lineman did like the year before i was training for that right that's what i that's what i'm doing cb like i'm bruh they's like yeah we stopped that i'm like all right cool so i get up there and you know this is my first pro bowl so i'm excited you know i'm ready i'm ready to go and dude it was a real life like um eye-opened experience like and not in a good way like like practice so practice we get there we practicing and the first you know we're doing a little warm-up and all that you know you ain't going that fast in warm-up whatever so we get into the practice thing and i'm moving like i'm regular practice you know i'm saying they're like whoa like whoa baby slow down i'm like what you mean slow down like no We ain't going.

16We don't do that, man. We ain't going that fast. What you doing? I'm like, all right, cool. Whatever. They don't do this in practice, right? So, cool. Whatever. So, we get there. We get to the game, right? So, I'm starting. It's kickoff, right? So, I'm on kickoff, and I'm flying down there like it's a regular game, man. I run down there, man, and I think it was Jason Winton, man. And I just, blah, blah, I'm throwing, trying to get to the tackle, right? And I come back into the huddle, right? And, boy, no, we ended up getting back to the sideline after we did our series. And the boy Ray said, man.

58Ray and Ed said, what did Jason Witten do to you, man? I said, he ain't do nothing. He said, well, why you do that? I said, man, I'm playing ball. No, man. No, we don't go hard like that. I'm like, okay. Hey, so I'm out of line all the way around. You know what I'm saying? They should have did away with that then, in my opinion, because by the time I made my second or third Pro Bowl, dude, I'm like, I don't even really want to be here. Just have us do something else because this ain't even a real game. You know what I'm saying? What do you think? No, I'm with you on it. And this is something that's been in the works for a long time.

3720 years ago, you almost hit a date. And I remember being at the Pro Bowl out there. We were all out there celebrating Willie. Parker's first Pro Bowl. And that was actually the game where Sean Taylor crushed the punter. Amazon Health AI presents Painful Thoughts. I can't stop scratching my downtown. There's no question too embarrassing for Amazon Health AI. Chat your symptoms and get virtual care 24-7. Healthcare just got less painful. On the new podcast, Solita, we share the messy reality of traveling alone as a woman.

24I can wait four hours for the next bus or this random dude is offering me a ride on his motorcycle. I chose option B. I'm Julie Pinheiro and I travel by myself because it's a rare space where I can say yes without asking anyone else first. I'm on a mission to reclaim the word solita, trading the pity for possibility. Every time I tried to be alone, I kept meeting people and they were like, you smiled at us, not a lot of people smile around here. It's when you're alone that you're most receptive to the world as it is and not the lies you're sold about it. It can be a time where you push your limits, change your mind, or wake up to a new version of yourself.

05So whether you're a solo travel veteran or you're too nervous to book your first trip, I hope you listen to Solita on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

35Everyone has a good time and no one gets mad at their publicist for letting them do our show. We've had a lot of great guests like Sarah Sherman. Not that great. Actually, can you help me shape this? How about we flip it on his head? How about we flip the script? What if the surprise woman, who actually you think is the straight man, is actually the one who's acting weird? Adam Scott. This entire time, you've been expecting Adam Sandler to come to visit the show. I would never expect. Let go of that. I have. I would never set expectations for something like that to happen. If the universe allows for something like that to happen, I'm open to it.

17I'm always going to accept. You know, Danny McBride, fine. Yeah. It's all this fragile masculinity exuding. I could smell it walking down the hallway, to be honest with you. I was like, is that weed? Nope. It's fragile masculinity. Ben Stiller, no. Because a lot of times, out of context, people don't get it or even know what a circle is. You know what I mean? Like, oh, what's a state? Everyone's so dumb except for you. And fake. Right, fake and also not interested or just like, oh, I've got my life. I don't care about your life. And a lot of other big shots that wouldn't be where they are without us.

54Oh, and by the way, Will Ferrell told us personally he loves the show and he wants to be a guest on every episode, but he's just so busy. Listen to Hollywood Handbook on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I'm Munga Shatikula and I'm back with a new season of the podcast Skyline Drive. This time I'm diving into a rabbit hole of peptides, organoids, blood boys, blue zones, and brain replacement to try to understand what this longevity obsession is all about. and what it really means to live forever for all of us. I learned about some rad science. I can make a brain for you, and then we can test what draw is the best for your brain, as opposed to his brain.

37Here are some hard truths. I would expect Indians to age faster, but I did not expect it to be almost a four to five year acceleration. And get myself into a world of trouble. I'd say probably start bone smashing. That doesn't work. Make it look more defined. They say it works. I don't know. Listen to Skyline Drive, How to Live Forever on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

07Our town is small taters by most standards, right? But to the people who grew up here, it's everything. What happens when a quiet Tennessee town becomes the front line in a battle over the future of America? developers with right-wing ties have purchased hundreds of acres of land in the area the first thing you see when it pops up is pioneers in appalachia but they weren't just planting houses we need cities on a shining hill that exemplify and embody the christian way of life stop right there is that normal a podcast about what happens when a small town becomes the site of a social experiment.

44God need men to rule. Great. And decides to fight back. Do not use my hard work to sell your bull. They're not just opposing what's being planned for here. Our hometown is not a test tube. They feel like they're standing in opposition to an entire administration. Guess you didn't move in on a bunch of dumb hillbillies now, did you? Listen to Our Town on the iHeart radio app, Apple podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. and when that happened i said oh we you could just see everybody else like shot you just very similar conversations that were going on in the sideline and then it wasn't until a couple years later we were all out there and that was the game where when the game started and they hiked the football it was almost like a glorified walkthrough and they didn't take everybody down to the ground and immediately after that season we were in competition committee meetings.

40And this is when I was on the executive committee for the NFLPA. So we're sitting in the competition committee and Troy Vincent walks in and he says, Hey man, what is this? And he shows the first two plays and he's like, well, you know what? That's it. You know, we got to, we got to figure out a way to resolve this and keep this game relevant. If not, we're going to have to make those changes. And that was almost 20 years ago. But when we got to 2010, during those CBA agreements, the Pro Bowl conversations came up. And it was one of those things, how can you kind of keep that? But the argument from the PA side was players don't want to play in this game because if they're up for a contract and get injured, now they miss out.

21And that's why you started seeing the structure of the game slow down to the point of what you're seeing it now into flag. They tried to do a lot of different creative things, making it, you know, doesn't matter what conference you're in. You could be on the same team. All of that fun stuff. I get it. But at the end of it, it was about the players that were in contracts that, yes, they wanted to be there and are taking up a space because they want to be a pro bowler. But yet don't want to play in a game. And that's where the conversation started going. And that's why you see it here where went the flag and of course the ratings are down and now it's eliminated.

57So I understand it. I get it as players. Yes, you don't want to be in that game. You want the recognition because there are incentives that are tied to your contract. But at the same time, you don't want another game to possibly risk an injury that now may impact your career moving forward. Yeah, and it has no bearing on if you're going to get paid anyway, because you making it is the accolade that you wanted anyway. That's going to help you get more money. So, yeah, I'm with you. I think they should have did away with it a long time ago. Also, they just now NFL teams were informed that players who return to college will not be permitted to return to the NFL during the 2026 season.

44So according to Adam Scheffner, a player signed to an NFL contract who is cut, who is who is sequentially cut is a free agent. he may sign with another NFL club the CFL or return to college but the player is considered a free agent and will not be submitted so will not be subjected to a future draft so what they did was they went to not letting them get into the draft and you couldn't come back in that same year So I don't know if you know this, Charlie, but a guy named James Harrison suggested this on, I believe it was, what's the name, August 24th. And then on the 26th, the NFL put into play this right here.

39So I'm not saying that they listening or that somebody called me to maybe show appreciation for my thoughts or idea. Maybe they thought my idea was a little too much Because I wanted them totally out of there So you know what I'm saying I said if you leave and you go back to college You can't come back to the NFL period But what the NFL did is they said Hey, you can't come back this year But you can come back next year But you can't re-enter the draft in 2027 you could come and get picked up as maybe a free agent um what do you think of this policy yeah i like it i mean it's one of those things because you your draft year is where you are you of course if you go back you dominate your one year of older than a lot of the players that you're playing with your draft stock can go up which can make you some more money as you enter in the nfl i think that part of it is fair and that did not allow those guys to now be a draft eligible so to speak but But I think when you look at just these players that are returning back to college, it's a small group.

56And I think it's that small group of 2022 where the rule was passed that you now get five years for your eligibility. And because this that particular group in 2022 is now fighting for that fifth year back. And that's why I think that happened. And of course, that player was going to make more money in college than he would just on his actual NFL salary. So I understand why he went back. So they're trying to get ahead of this to make sure that these players aren't dipping back and forth off of it. But I think once we get past this wave, I'm hoping that you don't see this again. But this is just something that is never going to change.

33Who knows what the next process is going to be? Because every player that is in collegiate level or at least exiting has the right to sue to get eligibility back. So when is this going to end? You did have the conferences that talked about we're not allowing these players to now enter into our leagues. But then there was just a lawsuit that was filed recently in Texas that allowed a player to sue to go back into those conferences because they say that those conferences are not the judge and jury. So, again, this is not this is a never ending battle currently on what we're seeing here. And I think it's just this one year issue.

11I don't think it's going to be moving forward. That's just my opinion. OK, I don't know. I think if you allow it now, you set precedent. to where now other people can come back through and say the same thing. Maybe it's because of injury. Maybe it's because of something else. But if you allow it now, then that's going to be an issue into the future. And when you look at it, the Soaresby kid that, you know, he wanted to, he went and fought and did the whole thing and he was coming back and all that. And you know what? They didn't even set a rule in place. They said, you know what? This is what y 'all want to do.

47This is what your university is going to do. You're going to allow him back. You're going to have him on a team. Hey, this AD said, hey, we're not playing you guys in any sports, period. So that's that that is what ended up happening there to where they didn't even have to make the rule or worry about it because they said, you know what? If you're going to keep him, we're going to make sure that you can't do anything with any of your athletes. Now you're going to go ahead and sacrifice the whole college athletic program for one person. No, no. Like and like you said, that wasn't something that, oh, the law says you can't do it.

26No, you can't make somebody play somebody. Right. I don't give a damn what you do in court. What court you go to. Hey, you got to play him. No, the hell we don't. We got to play him forfeit. whatever it may be we ain't even gonna schedule we don't schedule you ain't got you ain't got nobody to play and because and because that player can't go back to that university if he goes to a smaller university if he's a you know uh you know top recruit in the country and all of a sudden he ends up in a mid-american conference which we both love and he puts up big numbers you know what I mean it's like okay yeah but again are you playing against the competition but again if you're not allowing him to be in there so it's a conversation that will continue to have it's just one of those things to where i think the the nfl is saying we cannot allow those players to now re-enter the draft and better what their draft status looks like and now a team that wasn't on the radar last year now gets the opportunity to draft that particular person when maybe they hadn't evaluated lower in a draft a year prior to yeah and plus like i ain't gonna lie if it's me and you you're telling me oh they allowed this and now is that that's what it's gonna do and i i came out and i ended up get seven and i can go back and and ball out and come around at a one or two yes i'm gone absolutely i'm gone like and like you said again you're getting paid now sit over here or go back for a couple meals to play for one more year in college.

59I'm going back to play. When you went back to play, you're going back to play, especially when your salary is almost double what your NFL salary is going to be. So this is just the lay of the land of where we're at. I know a lot of people don't like it. Nobody likes the status of what the NCAA is, but they made their bed. They could have got ahead of this a long time ago. They choose to turn a deaf ear to it. And now this is what we're seeing years later. And it's just unfortunate. And it's turned a lot of people off from college football because, one, you're paying the players, which you should pay the players as well.

32But ultimately, all of these transfers and there's no loyalty to schools and you're not getting a player who is a freshman. But man, by the time he gets to his junior year, he's going to be that dude. Like you're not hearing those stories anymore because now when these team players are coming into the league, they haven't been already three teams already. So what does that look like for them coming in? So it just again, this is this generation that we're in, man, and it's not going away anytime soon. Yeah, it's the it's the wild, wild west. I think what they should have did is they should have, you know what, let's go ahead and start behind closed doors and set up a whole program, a whole scheme of rules or however it is that this is what it is.

11This is how it's going to be instead of saying, oh, yeah, everybody can get paid and we don't have no rules about what it is that you could do in that process of it. so it you know they set they they set them like you said they set their sales up for this you know
