In short

The Steelers’ stance on not negotiating Joey Porter Jr.’s contract during the regular season, and whether the team has actually made an offer before the season deadline.

Guests/backgrounds

The episode is hosted by James “Debo” Harrison and Joe Hayden. The discussion references Steelers decision-makers Omar Khan (team president/GM) and coach Mike McCarthy, plus Joey Porter Jr.’s representation/agents (unnamed).

Key claims

Omar Khan says the Steelers’ policy of no public negotiation during the regular season remains in place, and they won’t discuss negotiations publicly. Hosts argue that “no contract sent” means there’s effectively been no real offer to review, which they call disrespectful and a leverage tactic (possibly to force a franchise tag). They also claim Porter Jr. doesn’t negotiate directly; his agent does.

Notable examples

Comparisons to other cornerback contracts and production (e.g., Witherspoon and Trent McDuffie getting about $33M/year; stats cited for pass breakups/picks). Discussion of Porter Jr.’s current ~$4M deal and potential franchise-tag numbers (~$23.1M).

4:17James Harrison:How are you? I went to the vault. I went and found a vault piece, a 2010 Lil' Brown's helmet piece that I got when I was a rook. You know what I'm saying? Okay. Okay, I see it. Good old brownies. Here we go, brownies. Here we go. Yeah, nice. Nice. I know you like that. You know who you really like, you know what I'm saying? You know who you really like. It's a little bit of both. It's a little bit of both. You know what I'm saying? A little bit of both. Nothing. Hold on. What kind of... What we got? What we got there? I want to see everybody. What hat we got there? Just another hat. Just another hat.

4:48James Harrison:Just another hat. I ain't never seen that before. I know. It's just another one. Joe, it's just another one. Yeah, it's fresh. You got the little top piece on it. You got the little thing that come on there that you hang it. Joe, it's just another one. It's just another one. It's just another one, Joe. It's another fresh one. It's another one. That's all, Joe. Listen, I told you, Joe. I ain't stopping yet. I still got more to come, Joe. What, we at 156? I still got plenty more to come, Joe. But you at 156 hats? Man, listen. I can't tell you when I'm at because then you go, you know what I'm saying?

5:24James Harrison:You might not know when I actually recycle one. You know what I'm saying? You might be taking this to still fresh one. You know what I'm saying? They wouldn't know. Maybe you would know. I'm going to be here. They're going to probably look at the episodes and be like, yeah, they ain't, you know. Yes, sir. Yes, sir. I got my eyes on you. I'm locked in on you, D-Bug. Listen, they can lock in all they want to, man. I told you, man, the hat game. Hat game is super strong. Man, I'm trying to jump into this chat real quick, man. Tell these people I'm around here, though. Look here. I'm around here, people.

5:46James Harrison:I'm around here. Say hello. Good morning, chat. Joe, did you say good morning to the chat, Joe? I didn't. Let me get up in there, bro. Wow. Amazing, dude. See, I was running late. You was running late? I was running late. I was running late. You was running late. I was supposed to have some salt delivered to me, bro. They're supposed to deliver some salt, some Epsom salt, man. So 2 ,000 pounds, you know, I got to soak in Epsom salt. You know what I'm saying? Make sure you get - 1 ,000 pounds of Epsom salt? I ain't going to do it all at once. Yeah, no. About 50 pounds at a time. You can store Epsom salt.

6:19James Harrison:Real, real hot. You know, soak in there for 20, you know, 15, 20, 30 minutes at a time. You know what I'm saying? Just to be as if I feel sore. You know what I'm saying? For sure. Pour that soreness out, man. For sure. For sure. Get your body right, man. 1 ,000%. You know what I'm saying? you just started. No, I still do. I do the Epsom salt not as much as I used to because I just need to start. I just started getting back working out. My chest is sore from the buys and tries I told you I did the other day. So today, I'm doing legs. Your chest is sore from the buys and tries. That's telling me you ain't working the right muscles, Joe.

6:51James Harrison:You just said your chest is sore from buys and tries. And my tries. Joseph? My chest more. Your chest more. What's up, man? Okay, Joseph. Look here, man. They said they are not going to be negotiating when the season starts. So they talked to Omar Khan. He said Monday, the organization's policy, not negotiating contracts during the regular season will remain in place. He had this to say. I won't go into like any other player. We won't go. We won't talk publicly about the negotiations per se. But, you know, Joey, Joey knows how we feel about him. And I still hope Joey finishes his career here. Has he told you that he anticipates on practicing?

7:35I'll keep those conversations between us. Do you anticipate that deal potentially getting done by the start of the season, knowing the policy? Yeah, we won't. First of all, our policy is going to remain in place, but we, you know, I'm not going to talk about negotiation.

7:53James Harrison:So they are not going to talk about negotiations. yes that's um according to what i would take from it is maybe it might be some negotiations going on because from what i knew before it was no negotiations going on so i guess what i got to do here is is is going to my bag going to my think bag you know and say okay let me think what situations could be going on and you know i'm just gonna go here and just throw it off and I'm just thinking out loud. Okay, no, for sure. We got one, two, we got three scenarios that could be going on here. Okay. All right, and the first two, the first one that could be going on is maybe the number that they're offering is just too low.

8:48and you know my understanding or how I'm going to say my grading of what would be too low or how I

8:58James Harrison:would measure what would be too low in this case uh this scenario would be like a number that would not be as great as it would be if worst case scenario for me as the player I said you know what i'm sit out this whole year because i don't like the number okay and that means that the number is so low that i feel like next year with me sitting out a whole year not playing the game because i don't want to take a chance of getting hurt that i can make that money up next year so that would be scenario number one so okay cool so scenario number two would be uh the number is just not exactly what i want it to be it's around somewhere where where where i want it to be and you know come the 12th hour it's gonna be a difficult decision to make because it's so close and if i sit out a whole year versus you know just going and signing it and plan like can i make that number up next year okay and then the other scenario bro is we are where we were when we originally found out that he had no offers given to him on the table and for me right now i just i don't want to believe

10:36James Harrison:that it's the last scenario i just don't want to believe that and i'm hoping that it's the second scenario where it's gonna be a you know a 12-hour thing and you know it's one of those situations where option one and option two and maybe the stillers are somewhere in between one and two like one and a half one and three quarter and it's like it's a toss-up so do you really want to chance it or not or do you want to just go and say Debo let's get into some real perspective okay let's say that all things being considered that i know of reliable source to say that at the end of the day that there's still been no offer in no way there's still been no offer and when i say that there's been no offer there's no been no contract sent so that you can even start negotiate starting the negotiation process there's probably been i don't know that that's all i can say that i know a fact that there's no been no contract sent for joy porter to turn down or send back a counter contract.

11:45James Harrison:That has not happened. So when I hear that we say negotiations and you hear people saying, that's just talk. That's just maybe agents talking to each other's agent. Omar Collins reached out to maybe the agency and this is all, this is what I don't know. Maybe reached out and heard, oh yeah, what are you guys looking to get? Okay. You know what I'm saying? They're like, we're looking to get around 33. We're looking to reset the market. We saw what Witherspoon got. And this is agent talk. This isn't coming from Joey Porter, but agents speak. Joey Porter Jr. doesn't do the negotiations with the Steelers.

12:17James Harrison:Like, that's not something that happens. He's not sitting there talking, sitting down, having a conversation with Omar Khan. It's his representation. He does a great job. The player has to stay out of the way. And you've done what you do on the field. That's your job. You do what you do on the field. Make sure you protect yourself. And you go as professional as possible. You don't talk numbers to the GM. That gets really awkward. You know you've been in that position. When you can sit like, it's not, that's not what you do. Your agent talks to them, and that's how you communicate. It's not really like you're walking around the building, you see them all like, look, what's up?

12:48James Harrison:Like, you know what it is, but that's an awkward situation where you know that's the money man. You know he's like, you're still trying to be as cool as possible, but you know at the end of the day, he's talking to your agent, negotiating numbers, talking things. So - There's no, dude, I'm going to see. I'm going to let you know. I'm going to see if I get the same information. Dude, that better not be true, bro. That better not be true. That doesn't make no sense. I understand you not wanting to reset the market. Because if I'm the Steelers and I'm looking at it as the Steelers look at it, then, yeah, I'm paying you on what it is that you've done and then on the possibility of what you can do.

13:29James Harrison:But it's more going to be on what you've done and leading up to that. And the biggest thing that he doesn't have, like everybody else says, is the accolades. All pros, the Pro Bowls and all that other stuff. So they looking at it as distillers and like, yeah, like you're not going to reset the market. We're not going to try and reset the market because of X, Y, Z. And obviously his representation is saying, I don't care about what the accolades say. What the accolades say is the numbers. It's the picks. You see what I'm saying? When you have him outperforming people like Sauce Gardner that signed for$30 million a year.

14:05James Harrison:When we talk about Trent McDuffie, he's a great corner, but he has 34 pass breakups and three picks in four seasons. He's played four years in the league and he only has three picks. Joey Porter Jr. has played three years in the league, has three picks and three less pass breakups. So when you talk about these dudes that are, when you're an agent, you're representing your player. and Joey Porter Jr. has athletes first. And they are Jalen Ramsey representation. They reset contracts. Them dudes are athletes first. They get deals done. David Magueta and those dudes, they're a great agency. And it's because they get their players paid.

14:41James Harrison:Derwin James, they always have somebody that's coming to reset the market. Jordan Love is a client of theirs. So he knows the numbers. He knows what it looks like. And they do a great job of seeing what other players get paid and put their player to look at these stats, Look at these numbers. Look at what my man is doing. He's the number one corner, been following, hasn't allowed any touchdowns. So they're going to put their best foot forward for their player when they're talking to the GMs. They're going to have all of their stuff, their ducks in a row. Same way the GMs will have their stuff like, oh, no, he's kind of down on picks.

15:10James Harrison:He's going to come right back. Trent McDuffie, Witherspoon, both of them have three to two picks and signed for$33 million a year. So you can't give me that. You know what I'm saying? So with the Steelers, I'm looking at like, if you haven't offered anything yet, that's kind of crazy because I feel like it's getting down to the last hour. The games is September 13th. He hasn't been able to practice. He hasn't been able to be on the field and try to get into that conditioning part. So you need some time. Today's the first. The game is the 13th. Practice, you know what I'm saying? So I'm like the last is September 8th would be the last day because I would want him to get a little bit more time.

15:48James Harrison:But when we talk about the last hour, September 8th. And so they would need to offer something soon. And when they do offer something, I'm expecting they know that it's not going to – it wouldn't be a loafing deal. It wouldn't be something like$19 million a year. It would be something decent around$25 to just start the initial thing and then seeing Joey Porter and his representation at 33. Then when you talk to the player, when you talk to Joey and he finally sees a number, he's like, okay, maybe I don't know how to go reset the market. If these guarantees look good, I'm going to be in Pittsburgh.

16:21James Harrison:I can get this going, and I'm knowing I can make the$75 million guaranteed, where at the end of the day right now, he's on a$4 million deal right now if he goes and plays this season. That's crazy. When you know at the end of the day, you're going to be able – you're a$25 million a year. And you're not even – you're not offering me nothing. Dude, I got – oh, my goodness. Please hit me back. You're not offering nothing. That's right there. That's the problem because if you're not offering anything, that means you probably trying to set me up for next year. If I ball out, you're going to franchise.

16:55James Harrison:You're going to franchise me. Oh, and that's where I'm like it's getting to a little bit like as a player, Joey Porter, you know what I'm saying? Like for the Steelers, they have your rights and that part can get ugly because then you go out there, you play healthy for this$4 million. Then they could tag you. You know what I'm saying? they have your rights for the next two years and that'll be 23.1 million dollars next year will be the tag and he's playing this year for four mil so that'll be two seasons for 27 and you got to stay healthy it's just no guarantees there so if the Steelers were to send in something show me something where we could start talking because I played these first three years you paid Nick Herbick not to knock you play Benton dudes are getting paid in my class Washington and I'm a starting corner on your team I'm doing what I got to do staying out the way So show me something.

17:41James Harrison:At least I can see what you want. I'm Manga Shatikular, and I'm back with a new season of the podcast Skyline Drive. This time I'm diving into a rabbit hole of peptides, organoids, blood boys, blue zones, and brain replacement to try to understand what this longevity obsession is all about and what it really means to live forever for all of us. I learned about some rad science. I can make a brain for you, and then we can test what draw is the best for your brain, as opposed to his brain. Here are some hard truths. I would expect Indians to age faster, but I did not expect it to be almost a four to five year acceleration.

18:26And get myself into a world of trouble. I'd say probably start bone smashing. That doesn't work. Make it look more defined. They say it works. I don't know. Listen to Skyline Drive, How to Live Forever on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, this is Hayes Davenport and Sean Clements. We host the podcast Hollywood Handbook on the Big Money Players Network. Our show is extremely accessible to first-time listeners. Each week, we talk to someone in show business, a.k.a. the biz, and try to help them with their careers and see what they have to offer us. Everyone has a good time, and no one gets mad at their publicist for letting them do our show.

19:04We've had a lot of great guests like Sarah Sherman. Not that great. Actually, can you help me shape this? How about we flip it on his head? How about we flip the script? What if the surprise woman, who actually you think is the straight man, is actually the one who's acting weird? Adam Scott. This entire time, you've been expecting Adam Sandler to come to visit the show. I would never expect. Let go of that. I have. I would never set expectations for something like that to happen. like if the universe allows for something like that to happen i'm open to it i'm always going to accept you know danny mcbride fine yeah it's all this fragile masculinity exuding i could smell it walking down the hallway to be honest with you i was like is that weed nope it's fragile masculinity ben stiller no because a lot of times in out of context people don't get it or even know what a circle is.

20:04You know what I mean? Like they're like, oh, what's a state? Everyone's so dumb except for you. And fake. Right, fake and also not interested or just like, oh, I've got my life. I don't care about your life. And a lot of other big shots that wouldn't be where they are without us. Oh, and by the way, Will Ferrell told us personally he loves the show and he wants to be a guest on every episode, but he's just so busy. Listen to Hollywood Handbook on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. On the new podcast, Solita. We share the messy reality of traveling alone as a woman.

20:38I can wait four hours for the next bus or this random dude is offering me a ride on his motorcycle. I chose option B. I'm Julie Pinheiro and I travel by myself because it's a rare space where I can say yes without asking anyone else first. I'm on a mission to reclaim the word Solita, trading the pity for possibility. Every time I tried to be alone, I kept meeting people and they were like, you smiled at us. Not a lot of people smile around here. It's when you're alone that you're most receptive to the world as it is and not the lies you're sold about it. It can be a time where you push your limits, change your mind or wake up to a new version of yourself.

21:19So whether you're a solo travel veteran or you're too nervous to book your first trip, I hope you listen to Solita on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. Our town is small taters by most standards, right? But to the people who grew up here, it's everything. What happens when a quiet Tennessee town becomes the front line in a battle over the future of America? Developers with right-wing ties have purchased hundreds of acres of land in the area. The first thing you see when it pops up is pioneers in Appalachia. But they weren't just planting houses. We need cities on a shining hill that exemplify and embody the Christian way of life.

22:01Stop right there. Is that normal? A podcast about what happens when a small town becomes the site of a social experiment. God need men to rule. Great. And decides to fight back. Do not use my hard work to sell your bull. They're not just opposing what's being planned for here. Our hometown is not a test tube. 23:03James Harrison:going well with a lot of black men. Roland Martin unfiltered. I went off. I said, this is exactly what I'm talking about. Y 'all gonna scream at Chanel, but you don't want to see a black luxury company in the same vein. Catch Roland Martin's daily commentary on the Black Information Network. 12 seats. Those are moving south. So if you Democrats, you don't wait to 2030. You better be hitting the ground, going hard in the South now. And download Roland Martin Unfiltered on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. You guys are offering. So then he can know at the end of the day, if it's up to$75 million in guarantees, you're way more, you're taken care of if something does happen.

23:47James Harrison:You want to continue to get better, get those all pros, get your picks up, get your pass breaks. You're not expecting to be done. Listen, he hasn't made, you don't, anyway, Anyway, he hasn't even made a R-Pro or Pro Bowl. That's something that you could add in there as incentives for money that can be on top and it's not likely to be earned because he hasn't done it already. Like, there's ways that you can get it in there. But, I mean, hell, look at ADs. It was 20 going to 30. Going to 30. With incentives. With incentives.

24:20James Harrison:But, dude, if they truly have not offered anything, it's nothing to talk about. Like, basically what you're trying to do is you're trying to get him for two years for 27. Yes. That's what you're trying to do. And then you're hoping that he just goes out there and puts his body on the line. And you know how hard it is to get through a season healthy? Like, to go out there and do that, it would be, dude, it'd be foolish. It'd be the craziest thing for him to ever do. because when it comes down to it, like you said, we got 23 million, what, five would be his number next year? 23-1. 23-1 would be his number if they franchise him next year.

25:04James Harrison:He's only making, what, four this year? Yep. Yes. I'm sitting, and I'm going to tell you right now, I'm going to go out there, I'm going to go through the practice, I'm going to do everything in my back, go tighten up. Let's go tighten up. And let's go tighten up every, every week. Like, there's no other recourse for him other than an actual injury. Because that back, that back is tricky. I know. I know. You know. I know. I know. Because, Debo, this is the part where the fans, when you are starting to say, like, he's under contract. He thinks he needs to be, he's trying to be overpaid. I'm like, what are you talking about?

25:51James Harrison:Like, do we not see this? It's a business. College is making$4 million. My man's making$4 million. Shut up. You are tripping. And that is not what it is. He's starting corner for the last three years in the league. You're number one. He's been doing nothing, but you try to find reasons not to pay people. Joey Porter Jr. is not out there doing crazy things. He hasn't been pulled over. He's not driving crazy. He's doing everything he can do to become the best corner he can be. getting better every single year. And he was drafted by you guys in the second round. Right. And he's been balling. Like, this is when you, this is who you, this is who you keep on the team.

You know, he gets paid, he got paid his 17-5 and nobody said nothing because it was deserving. When Nick Herbick just got paid, he was drafted. He's been doing, not even like, that's more potential. And he deserves it because I know, and I believe in Nick Herbick. But when he gets paid, why is it so much more chill than when Joey Porter Jr. has been doing the same stuff? I'm like, no. It's going, it's the NFL. He can go get hurt right now and be only guaranteed$4 million. What they need to think about, bro, is you're doing this to your starting corner.

27:04James Harrison:You haven't even offered him nothing. What do you think everybody else in that locker room is saying and thinking about your organization right now that you ain't even offered this man nothing? That is crazy. This is what you, One of the best players on your defense. These are the people that you do. These are the people that you do reward. These are the people that you do reward. And I normally see when the Steelers, when I was over watching, like Cam Hayward, like no matter, he's going to ball, he's going to do his thing, and he's going to continue to, everybody's like, what? No, Cam is, he's a staple in the locker room.

27:38James Harrison:He's a staple on the field. And these are the type of dudes that you need on your squad. Joey Porter Jr. has done nothing wrong. So when we saying like, maybe you don't want him to be the highest paid corner, but damn, where do you expect him to be? Not 20. You're not, you can't, I can't negotiate with you if you don't offer me something. You're telling me it's not, how, what, hey, Joe, I'm coming to apply for a job that you ain't even, you ain't even, you ain't even offering me. Like, what are we talking about? It ain't even open. Like, what? Hey, what? Yeah, it starts to feel, as a man, as a man, when you went out there and played, you were drafted with these other guys too.

28:16James Harrison:That's the thing that makes it even more like, damn, with the three other dudes that got the extensions, I'm in the same class. We've been here balling, working, doing what I had to do, grinding. You're not offering me nothing. At the end of the day, I played these three years. I wasn't a first-round pick. You got me a 32, so I don't have a fifth-year option. Would you accept my 50-year option? Did I do enough for the 50-year option? I don't know. So now it just, as a man, you could feel a certain type of way because everybody's like, no, no, go out there. You got to play. You sign a contract.

28:46James Harrison:Man, look at my boys that's getting 25, 18, 12. When they want that pay cut, all they do is say, take the pay cut and release you. Let me go because I know at the end of the day, Joey Porter Jr. could be the highest paid team if he was let go and was able to go get his bag from another team. Like, they would pay him. A team would pay Joey Porter$32 million a year right now. Hey, listen, I'm going to tell you right now, it don't matter where he go. They go pay him and offer him something. Offer. They're going to offer something. There is no. Bruh. If I get word back that that is that that that this man ain't even had a real offer to look at.

29:29James Harrison:And this is the part. send a rebuttal or or like something what yes and debo this is what i'm saying this who is in control of this this this don't make sense me disrespect me send me a disrespectful offer send me something that you think is crazy so then i could at least be like this whoo you know it's more than four i know it's gonna be more than four if it's 20 million dollars a year For five, it's a$100 million contract that you see with 60 guaranteed. And if you send that, that's the craziest thing ever because you just gave that away for somebody that's not a starter. And like you said, everybody is deserving.

30:10James Harrison:So if that's the case, it's no way. Dude, it's no way. I really hope that is. Send me something disrespectful. But if it is true, this is the most disrespectful thing ever. But not sending an offer is just violation of all type of codes. Like, the man that went out there, oh, well, he go, if you, Mike McCarthy, Omar Khan, Mr. Art Roney, like, if you believe that he is going to go out there and play on this$4 million deal with nothing to guarantee him that it's no way. Because this, listen, this is the part two, Debo, Debo, Debo, this is the part two that you don't, that you sometimes might fail to realize is end of the day, if a contract does get sent, when you're talking, when your agents are negotiating and talking to these GMs and say your, your agent is like this, no, we want to be, we want to reset the market.

31:17James Harrison:That's what it's going to be that that's where we stand no matter what even send something so then at the end of the day you can say in good faith i sent them an offer i sent what i expected them to be this is what was the max that i wanted them what happened to good faith you can look at it then then you don't look crazy that good faith word is huge joe you're not showing no good faith you ain't even send an offer that's that's that's what i'm saying right you want something in the contract that I can't get. That's crazy. Yes. Show me, send me what you think I'm worth then. So I hear what you were saying with the agent because then as a player, you could be like, you got to show me.

31:59James Harrison:You're going to show me the contract. I'm like, okay, bet, boom. Now I can at least look at it and see what it looks like. Because if... Show me something. Give me something I can go back for. I'm sending... I'm not sending you nothing because there's nothing to be sent because you're telling me right now you don't even want to negotiate. Yeah, you telling me I'm under contract. Play your year out. That's it. Yeah. Like, I don't know how you want him to be a stiller for life if we ain't offered him nothing.

32:34James Harrison:If we ain't offered him nothing, I don't know how we want him to be a stiller for life because that's a one-year contract. When you want somebody to be with your organization for life, they never get to one year. That's what I'm saying. when that one year's up, that's when you're going into your last season. That's your final season. That's what they're telling you.

32:55James Harrison:Unless we don't tag you. Bruh. That. I say it ain't so. I hope at the end of the day, for real, for real, that from my outside looking in with the Steelers, they're going to do the right thing, figure it out, and get Joey Porter Jr. paid.

33:42James Harrison:Listen, listen. It ain't Russian roulette for him. It's a no-brainer. I sit out. I come back next year. And I sit out because my back hurts. I sit out because this hurts. I sit out because my asshole hurts.

34:04James Harrison:Everything hurts. Bubble guts and all. Like, you want to complain and talk about me saying this? Oh, you can't do that. what other recourse do you have you don't but if they want you to take a pay cut you can't force them to keep you and get paid but they can just cut you this is all his only this would be your only recourse period yep and you can't tell a man when he hurt especially on that back that back you bro if this I don't I just can't bro this is this ain't it this ain't it look we got some gotta cut we got some days we hope hopefully I say like we said Debo like you know and like I know it can go down in 24 but it gotta start on once it's a a contra has to be you cannot dictate and say when a man is healthy You can try.

35:08James Harrison:You can do it all you want to. If that was the case, then it'd be people that would be playing whenever y 'all said y 'all wanted them to play. It's some dudes that do do that, and they mess up their career and end their careers early. Oh, you all right. You can do it. Go out there. Nope, don't do it. You can't. You ain't 100%. What are you talking about? Don't step out there. And that back, that lock up in a minute, anytime. You can reach over to grab something. Hell, I stressed this morning. I almost got locked up, Joe. A thousand percent, Debo. I went to tie my shoe. Thank you. Little spaz.

35:44James Harrison:Thank you. Boom. If y 'all have, if you believe that this man is going to play, or y 'all anticipating him playing on that contract, don't count on it. Y 'all better get ready and back up whatever it is y 'all got backed up because him to go out there and play on$4 million and he gets hurt, that means he won't get franchised next year because you won't give him a franchise. It'll be an offer of prove it. A one-year. It's no advantages for him to go and play this year without a contract extension. So either get ready to trade or release. And if it's me, I'm going to play it sideways on you because you want to play sideways with me, you want to play tricky with me, I'm going to practice all week.

36:38James Harrison:And my back going to lock up on Friday. That's just keeping it a bean. Keeping it a bean. Keeping it a buck. It is. Like you bring in Elandon Roberts and you just release him. It's a bit that it's business on your side. So it got to turn business on my side. And it's not, I don't want it to be like that. But now I've hooped. It's business. You got to keep it 100 business. Now look here, man. They talking, he said he's not closing the door. Omar said he's not closing the door. For sure. No. Listen, you can not close the door all you want to, but that don't mean, y 'all let that man go. He went to Vegas.

37:18James Harrison:And you know, they kept Harrison. And then they ended up releasing Harrison anyway. That's who they kept E over back then. They thought Harrison was going to be better than E. That didn't happen. Now you brought him back. and then he came back and then you let him go again. Got him about it again. He already proved that he was better. Everything else. So first time, it's shame on you. Second time, shame on me. It ain't going to be a third time. The third time, I'm pretty sure it's going to be some guarantees and some incentive type things put in there for me to even step over there if you call me.

37:58James Harrison:If things start looking tricky after week one or two or three. Debo. You're not just Debo. It's the league. You don't think he's going to be like, nah, y 'all playing with me. I'm not going to come back. Bruh, I'm going to tell you right now. The man was coming back for minimum. He was on a minimum. And then you let me go? You think I'm going to come back again on another minimum? And then he didn't even get it because he didn't make the route? Huh? call me if you want to. You ain't picking up. No, I'm going to pick up. But it's going to be more than minimum. It's going to be more guaranteed. Exactly.

38:39James Harrison:So, hey, you want me to come over there? What y 'all got left in your thing? Three? Yeah, I want three. I need it. Give me three to sign, and then you can give me minimum for the rest of it. Yeah, three because I'm... I'm leaving here with something. You ain't going to have me come. I done came over here twice already, and you done sent me back. I'm leaving here with something. I'm leaving here with something. I feel that. I feel you, Debo. I feel you. Deservingly so. But they got to get young Joey. They got to get young Peasy right. Got to. Or it's going as good as you got to. Like I said. You don't think it's happening?

39:14James Harrison:I don't know what they doing. But this is not what you want to do or have, especially in your first year as the head coach. is one of your cornerstones don't get paid and then you pay everybody else but him on top of it was some friction you know with other players when he came in there about how things were being handled and everything else but you know this to that and all the other stuff like i said a lot of those changes i liked they were good come on yeah that's what i'm saying devo i ain't gonna lie to you you You got to come in there. Hopefully he can keep that up. You know what I'm saying?

39:57James Harrison:But when it comes down to it, like, hey, this is one of the cats that's been in there. Like, where are we going? Like, we ain't offering Nathan?

40:11Like, that's just a, you got to.

40:18James Harrison:Wow, Joe, that could be, Joe. Joe, it looks like that could be definitely true.

40:29Wow.

40:30James Harrison:Yeah. Offer.

40:36Hey, bro, that's all I'm saying.

40:39James Harrison:And I understand what they're talking about. That's just agents talking, talking. Like, when you're talking about you in negotiations, that means like they're saying verbal negotiations. No paper contracts sent and they've been able to turn it down. Like, send me something so I can see what your guarantees, how many years, da-da-da. So then, like, we can go from somewhere. If this is what – if PZ's agent's most creme de la creme contract versus what the Steelers want to do. And that's how negotiations work. So then we eventually – you give some, I take some, and then we meet somewhere in the middle, or then we don't.

41:15James Harrison:But there's a negotiation that has to start taking place when you send me the first contract. Like, I hear everybody like, oh, no, verbal. Why am I going to send something if his agent is telling me that he wants to be the highest paid? Because I want him on my team, and I'm willing to show you this is what we got. You know what I'm saying? Send me something so I can see at the end of the day how many years, what's this guarantee looking like? How much do you guys really value me? You know what I'm saying? If you think I'm going to be a stealer for life, it's not going to be a four right now. You know what I'm saying?

41:46James Harrison:I played from these first three years balling. so what do you guys think that I should get? They obviously sent Darnell Washington and his representation. They probably thought what they wanted, what he wanted, wasn't the same. They met at... I'm Mungish Shatikular, and I'm back with a new season of the podcast Skyline Drive.

42:29Here are some hard truths. I would expect Indians to age faster, but I did not expect it to be almost a four to five year acceleration. And get myself into a world of trouble. I'd say probably start bone smashing. That doesn't work. Make it look more defined. They say it works. I don't know. Listen to Skyline Drive, How to Live Forever on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, this is Hayes Davenport. And Sean Clements. We host the podcast Hollywood Handbook on the Big Money Players Network. Our show is extremely accessible to first-time listeners. Each week, we talk to someone in show business, a.k.a.

43:10the biz, and try to help them with their careers and see what they have to offer us. Everyone has a good time and no one gets mad at their publicist for letting them do our show. We've had a lot of great guests like Sarah Sherman. I would never let go of that. I would never set expectations for something like that to happen.

43:52If the universe allows for something like that to happen, I'm open to it. I'm always going to accept. You know, Danny McBride, fine. Yeah, it's all this fragile masculinity exuding. I could smell it walking down the hallway, to be honest with you. I was like, is that weed? Nope. It's fragile masculinity. Ben Stiller, no. Because a lot of times, out of context, people don't get it or even know what a circle is. You know what I mean? Like, they're like, oh, what's a state? Everyone's so dumb except for you. And fake. Right, fake and also not interested or just like, oh, I've got my life. I don't care about your life.

44:30And a lot of other big shots that wouldn't be where they are without us. Oh, and by the way, Will Ferrell told us personally he loves the show and he wants to be a guest on every episode, but he's just so busy. Listen to Hollywood Handbook on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. On the new podcast, Solita, we share the messy reality of traveling alone as a woman. I can wait four hours for the next bus or this random dude is offering me a ride on his motorcycle. I chose option B. I'm Julie Pinheiro and I travel by myself because it's a rare space where I can say yes without asking anyone else first.

45:07I'm on a mission to reclaim the word solita, trading the pity for possibility. Every time I tried to be alone, I kept meeting people and they were like, you smiled at us. Not a lot of people smile around here. It's when you're alone that you're most receptive to the world as it is and not the lies you're sold about it. It can be a time where you push your limits, change your mind, or wake up to a new version of yourself. So whether you're a solo travel veteran or you're too nervous to book your first trip, I hope you listen to Solita on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

45:47Our town is small taters by most standards, right? But to the people who grew up here, it's everything. What happens when a quiet Tennessee town becomes the front line in a battle over the future of America? Developers with right-wing ties have purchased hundreds of acres of land in the area. The first thing you see when it pops up is pioneers in Appalachia. But they weren't just planting houses. We need cities on a shining hill that exemplify and embody the Christian way of life. Stop right there. Is that normal? A podcast about what happens when a small town becomes the site of a social experiment.

46:23God need men to rule. Great. And decides to fight back. Do not use my hard work to sell your bull****. They're not just opposing what's being planned for here. Our hometown is not a test tube. They feel like they're standing in opposition to an entire administration. Guess you didn't move in on a bunch of dumb hillbillies now, did you? Listen to Our Town on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

47:17James Harrison:going well with a lot of black men. 12, Heron, he sent what they wanted. How did that? Met at 18.

47:58James Harrison:You know what I'm saying? You have Nick Herbick that was out there. We were talking about negotiations, that they started 25. Was 25 million the first thing that the Steelers sent Nick Herbick? Hell no. That's what I'm saying. So there has to be someone where you send me something. But they did something, bro. No, Debo, I'm just, I'm telling you, like, you know what I'm saying? They ain't said nothing. I'm with you now. I done got a reliable source said. It ain't been no nothing sent. There it go. Come on. I ain't. Huh? No. That don't even make sense to me. Paper is crazy. I don't, this, I, man, man, man, Lord, Jimmy, Christmas.

48:37James Harrison:But that's when, at the end of the day, you start to get to where you, you bring it up to me always. the business side, the money side. Oh, yeah. Where are they going to get the money from? Like, they would have to start. What are you talking about? They got$30 million cap right now. No, no, no, no, no. I'm saying that's why they restructured. That's why they restructured DKs. They would have to restructure people's stuff. But then, like, they already looking at it like, okay, we signed. This is not how you play, man. You don't play. You don't play, man. Y 'all playing a game that you don't realize you're going to lose.

49:06James Harrison:This is the game where I'm saying. Because he can't win any other way. there's no other way for this man to win because you ain't offering nothing and you think he's going to go out there and get take a chance of getting hurt no why because i could sit out and i could get something next or you trading you don't want him you ain't offering nothing if you ain't offering nothing you don't want him trading get something for him devil's advocate they saying we do want him but you ain't offering me nothing you don't want me yeah i know i i'm with you. But they, yeah, they got him a full million right now.

49:42James Harrison:So it's like, you can't play. That's just messed up. That's the biggest. You can't play when you back hurt. That's what I'm talking about. You can't play when you back hurt. What are we talking about? Yeah, that's what I'm saying. I don't want it to get ugly like that because it's just... It ain't going to get ugly, man. It's just going to be what it's going to be. It's going to be what it's going to be. You damn right.

50:05James Harrison:And here's the thing. Go ahead and put yourself up against that deadline. We know negotiating season. Yes. You cannot negotiate in season. You're going to be trading him this season to try and get something for him or sitting there and wondering why that man back still locked up after he practiced for a day and can't get out there.

50:27James Harrison:I'm just keeping the bug. You know what I'm saying? You saying the same thing? I'm pretty sure they would love to have a chance at getting nephew. Mm-hmm. You know what I'm saying? Hell. My boy Jazz. Go ahead, get over there to LA. They might give us some. Oh man, no. They get cool. They might - Yeah, they go over there, I might start rooting for LA. If you go over there, I might start rooting for LA. That be my NFC team. Man, look, you got to get - I'm for the players that got to get in their paper. and then when they get in there, because they performed to get their paper. He hasn't done anything wrong.

51:09James Harrison:He's not out here wilding. He's not out here trying to mess up the bag. He's out here trying to be a baller, trying to go to all pros, trying to be the best player he can be. So when I see that, I'm all for it, Joey Porter Jr. You've been doing what you're supposed to do. My whole speculation is out the window. It ain't no speculation no more. Ain't nothing. ain't Nathan Nathaniel nothing Nathaniel right we want him to be listen man your words your words they gotta match your actions and your actions gotta match your words them two gotta go together you understand boy I can't I can't I can't tell you that you know hey son I love you, man.

52:04I really care about you, but I don't do a damn thing for you.

52:08James Harrison:I do nothing to make sure that you are safe, that you are taken care of. I do nothing to make sure you have a roof over your head, food in your stomach. I do none of that. You're not on the right path. I don't lead you. I don't do anything, but I love you. I ain't seen you in six months I ain't seen you in a year and when I do see you it's a quick hey hi and bye what? I love you though I love you it comes down to the point Debo of when I would say was playing for the Browns signed that contract extension Pro Bowl Pro Bowl the next year soon as that guarantee was up and I had and I got concussions that next season that following season they hit my phone because I was playing well, then wasn't playing well, then was concussed and was missing games.

53:00James Harrison:Hit my phone with the, okay, now, Joe, you're not playing like a top five corner in the league anymore. You need to take this pay cut or we're going to cut you. So I'm like, no, I'm just hurt. When I'm on the field, I'm playing like a top five corner. I just can't do nothing about my concussions. When I get back out there, I'm going ball. And that's just the business side. I've signed the contract. I'm good. No, they're like, no, no, no, bro. You are playing less than what you've been. So now we're going, now the guaranteed is up. So now you need to take some less. I'm like, no, the same way we signed the contract here, but it just turns into that.

53:34James Harrison:You ain't playing up to what we think. You ain't playing up with the park, Coach. But if you're playing over what we know that you've been playing at, A, you signed the contract. I'm not playing. And deservingly so. I feel you. Okay, bet. Now I'm going to go. The Steelers is like this. Now we see what's going on. Bam. Get over there. Start balling. And you have to play well. and then when you don't, it's time to go. It just is what it is.

54:00James Harrison:Come on, man. You got to send them something, though. Hey. Hey. You got to send them something. You got to start somewhere. I don't know who it is. You have to start somewhere. I don't know who it is. But I'm almost positive it's either going to be Omar Khan or it's going to be Mike McCarthy. It's going to be one of them, too. So whether the contract is sent or not sent, I don't think art really has much to do with it, to be honest with you, because I think that's going to be more a thing between Omar and Mike. And with Mike just getting there and, you know, you kind of want to put your own spin on it.

54:34James Harrison:I mean, you done what we had. Was it eight or ten guys that kept on that we drafted? We kept all of them. Yeah. How often is that that you keep every player that you drive? I don't know. I don't know how many people that hit the lottery like that. but hey look it could be good that's what I'm saying I'm hoping I'm hoping it's good but I know I know this right here with no offer and then releasing E Landon E Landon Roberts is not what I thought would be conducive to us having a successful season or at least giving us a better chance to have one and then on top of we ain't even had an offensive line that done played two two games together that that got a whole they got a they ain't setting nothing together to where they can go ahead and get used to each other like that's a big thing people don't understand that like yo i need to know who is saying to the left and right like you know i understand like some guys don't need to do certain things because they have but dude when you're talking about a group that has to play together they have to work together they have to court they have to communicate and know okay look man, we got this twist stack, whatever possibility, whatever that may be.

55:49It helps when you have them all together.

55:52James Harrison:So basically, I think we're going to be going through a little bit of some growing pains these first four weeks, bro. You damn right with the line. If the line isn't protecting, that's where we all start bad. Because Rico Dotto, Jalen Warren, if they can't get started, it's not going to be good. We'll start behind the sticks. won't be able to get those one-on-ones with DK, with Pittman on the outsides, with Mount Washington. So it all starts with if Aaron Rodgers, he can't run. So if, like you said, if the line isn't protecting, it's going to be not too good. Defense, Jalen Ramsey, good, healthy.

56:29James Harrison:We got TJ Watt coming back healthy. We got Cam, we got Benton coming off his contract. Highsmith, Herbick. Sean Elliott on IR, though. Yes. We still got Sean. We still got, what's my man, Samuel. Samuel. So the secondary should be looking. And this is what I'm saying, too. The communication. You going to move Jalen back to safety or what's going on? Listen, as long as the communication is as good, body on bodies, as long as we don't have people running scot-free, it's not going to be as crazy. Obviously, we're going to need Joey Porter Jr. out there to make the defense to be locked in. But it's not as much bad.

57:08James Harrison:It's just offensive line, a thousand percent, like you said. Because if the offensive line isn't, if we can't get the run game going, then that's going to shut down the whole thing. We got to be ahead of the sticks. Because like you said, we're going to be, boom, run, run, run, bring a safety in the box, play action. We got DK on the outside. We got a fire move in Mount Washington. So, offensive line for sure. Defensive players are going to be back healthy. So, it's not looking. I don't think it's going to be as bad. McCarthy, his offense, seeing what's going on. So I don't think it's going to be as bad.

57:43James Harrison:I don't know, man. I'm hoping for the best, but right now this got me a little distraught. And I do believe in Queen and I believe in P-Dub. Another year of communication is going to be in a queen. I believe in Queen and P-Dub too. Okay? Now when it comes down to it though, I know what each one lacks. I hear you, but I'm telling you, you can do it. And when we're talking about it was a problem all last year, bro. I understand we had some scheme issues and all that. But at the same time, when you playing up there, bro, and they start doing that double and that rub, you got to come down there and you got to get that lineman off that double by coming down and bamming that lineman off of him.

58:28James Harrison:The same thing that you're talking about right now is the same thing that I believe that these pros are watching on tape and they know that they got to do that better. So if you're self-grading and self-watching film and seeing like, hold on, what were my strengths and what were my weaknesses in last year? What can I do better? What can make me the best linebacker? I would hope that I think Queen and P-Dub are trying to be three down linebackers where they don't need to be getting taken out. Where Queen is on his contract making 75. They're three down linebackers now because we have no one to take out.

59:00James Harrison:That's what I'm saying. So knowing that, we know what you're saying is, Debo, is obviously because it was on tape. It's on tape. That's what we're talking about. No, that's what I'm saying. So I think that given them this year, they know that this has to change. This has to get off of your tape. You can't be doing the same thing. Like, this is why we were not successful last season. So I'm thinking P-Dub and Queen going to attack this and going to make it look a whole lot better than it was last year. And even when you attack it, bro, You still got to come down and get off. That's the big thing, dude.

59:33James Harrison:I can say, James, you know what you need to do, man. You can be able to cover better. I can work on my coverage all I want to. If I can't cover, I just can't cover better. If I can't get downhill and shed that block and get off of it, if you done got to the point to where you're in the National Football League right now, and your issue has been getting downhill and shedding off of blocks of linemen, you're going to have that problem now. you're going to have it for a while you might not even get rid of it because now you're at the top level and now these linemen can grab and hold your ass okay and getting off that block is a lot harder and now you got to come with a lot more force you got to come down to it and you got to be able to punch, explode get off dude like that's a lot of power you got to have explosive and be explosive and powerful in there dude like And you don't have to be heavy to do it, but you have to have that.

1:00:30James Harrison:And I haven't seen that. James Ferrier. When James Ferrier played with us, James Ferrier was our inside linebacker, brother. James Ferrier, by the time we got to the end of the season, that boy was 215. God. 215. He came into training camp maybe 230 if he was lucky, 225. But he could come downhill and bam and get off of it. Lawrence Timmons, Larry Foot. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. That's why they moved Timmons. Timmons was an outside linebacker. That's why they moved Timmons off the line, because Timmons couldn't get these linemen, they couldn't get the tackles off of him because he didn't have that running start to get down.

1:01:09James Harrison:They moved him back there to the inside. He had that running start coming downhill. Bam! Dude, what we got is guys coming downhill, and they may give up a one-for-one. We can't take a one-for-one. Can't take a one-for-one. Can't do that. Can't take a one for one. You got to come down there and get up off of that and make that. Oh, I'm with you, Debo. I'm with you. Anyway, bro, I just I'm hoping we able to get this done or they're able to get this done at some, you know, at some point in time.

1:01:50James Harrison:you can stick to your policy. You can say that it's going to be in effect. If you're doing any type of Russian roulette here, I promise you, they pulling triggers over there. There's no need to go. There's no need for this. We can make it smooth, just like everybody else's little deal was done. We can get it done. We can get it done, but something got to be sent. Something got to be sent. Something got to be sent. Something got to be sent. And nothing to send is nothing to even talk about. It could be done in 24 hours. But I ain't going to lie to you. We're running out of 24 hours. Because by September, I'm sent.

1:02:33James Harrison:September 8th, Debo. If it ain't signed by September 8th, then, then, then. back for show for show. Yeah. That's Saturday. What is it? I mean, but because I'm saying you're not going to play. You being a stickler on you're not negotiating. You're not negotiating the season. You're not negotiating the season. Yes. And you're not even saying as a standard, we don't normally negotiate the season. You're saying we're not. Okay. Who do you think go block? Man, they ain't go forward over there. I promise you. They ain't go forward over there. Brother, I don't think neither one is going to fold. Right.

1:03:14James Harrison:So go on and trade my man if that's the case. Like the worst case, I don't like Le 'Veon Bale. Right. Like literally. But neither one. But Le 'Veon turned something down. That's what I'm saying. No, no, that's what I'm saying. We still got to wait to the point. We had an offer. I feel you. I hear you. I'm with you. But that's what it's looking like. At least they showed him they wanted to try to do something. Yes. That's what I'm saying. And you give a chance to turn it down. because then I don't give a damn what your agent's talking about. You as a man, you know what it is. It's like, am I really worth, is it going to, you can make that decision.

1:03:50James Harrison:If you're getting offered$25 million a year versus what your agent or$26 million a year versus what your agent thinks you're worth, is that worth now at the end of the day? When they show that in front of you, this is what it looks like. Right now we can be able to get this contract at a four year, you know what I'm saying, $100 million,$75 guaranteed extension with these things into incentives. It was like this. Okay, I will want a four-year$120 million, but am I about to literally now, I'm looking at this deal. I'm a human being. I hear you, agent. I hear all that, but the Steelers, where I'm at, I'm willing to pay for this.

1:04:26James Harrison:I can play these years, and then I'm expecting myself to ball out and then be able to get another deal. Because the thing is, right now, I signed a contract. I went to second round and I signed for$9 million. So now this is going to be my next contract from what I did for you lately. And that's$100. Okay, cool. Now I'm playing for the next deal. So if I was Joey Porter Jr. too, like with the Steelers, if you're not going to send anything because you're thinking that, no, they're saying that they want this type of money, they want to set the market, send something now. So then he can literally sit down, look at it as a man, check and see what it is and be like, okay, but no, this is what they do.

1:05:06There's so many ways that this deal could get done and things could move and like at least like head in the right direction.

1:05:18James Harrison:It's ridiculous, especially with the possibility of incentives, because as we said, it's not, he don't have accolades that he's earned. And those are now incentives that you can put in there as not likely to be earned. and then it don't even go against like bluff money in there right right this is what you you you're saying you don't want to pay me this number but we don't know what it is they don't want to pay because they ain't saying no but here it is let's hypothetically you don't want to pay me this number because i don't have those accolades okay pay me this number when i get those accolades the bonus of getting those accolades now put me at the number that i want to be well but got to get an offer first.

1:06:00James Harrison:Yeah. I'm telling you, it's nobody in their right mind that's playing for four and taking the chance of hurting themselves. You playing for four, Joe? Or is your back hurting? My back. Down bad, bro. Ah. Ah. Ah. Some... I need some... Where's... I need some icy hot, some spicy something. That's shit. Tight for people. You know what I'm saying? Give me something. Feeling bad like God. Bad. Need some effort and salt and all that. Man. All right. I'm Mungish Hatikular and I'm back with a new season of my podcast, Skyline Drive.
