In short
Debo and Joe discuss NFL training camp updates for the Steelers and Browns, including injuries and practice rules, then pivot to NBA talk about LeBron James signing with the 76ers instead of returning to Cleveland.
Guests
The episode is hosted by James “Debo” Harrison and Joe Hayden (no additional named guests appear in the provided transcript).
Key claims
- LeBron to Philly makes sense because the 76ers’ roster is a “stacked mob,” with Jalen Brown, Tyrese Maxey, and Joel Embiid—only major concern is Embiid’s health.
- Steelers camp: Joey Porter Jr., Jalen (knee/back issue), and Dante Kent are on the “PUP list,” but Broderick Jones is medically cleared and returning to practice.
- “No live tackling” is framed as safety-focused “thud” drills rather than full-speed tackling to the ground.
- Aaron Rodgers says he’s not debating retirement; he’s treating this as a “final swan song.”
Notable examples
- Broderick Jones returns after an eight-month season-ending neck injury; worked with the twos at tackle.
- Denzel Ward extension discussion: Browns keep him via a two-year extension, described as smart cap/guarantee management.

4:02Welcome back to this episode of Debo and Joe. I'm your host, James Debo Harrison. I'm here with my co-host, Joe Hayden. Please make sure you like, subscribe, and download where you get your show. How you doing today, Joe?
4:19James Harrison:Ah, I'm doing great, brother Debo. I'm doing great. I missed you, my brother. Honestly, I did. I did. My brother from another. It's been too long. It's been too long. Way too long. Brother, what, 17? 17? 18? Something like that. Oh, my goodness, brother. A lot of days, brother. A lot of days. A lot of days. And I ain't going to lie. I took advantage of those days, D-Bo. You took advantage of those days? Yes, I did. What do you do on those days? I did a couple of, I golfed. I did some golf trips. I went back out to New York. What a surprise. New Jersey. I went to Oak Hill. Beautiful course. Hold on, hold on, hold on.
4:54James Harrison:You just went golfing. No, that's one of those. No, I'm asking. You just said to hell with it. I'm going to go back to go play on some green grass that you can get in VA. Yes, I'm going to go play. pristine nice courses that I haven't He's telling me it was some charity event to it. Something that was more than you just running around to some other grass. Nope. Me going to a PGA tour course by my man Ben that hosted me and my brother and my boy Sean. My brother Jonathan and my boy Sean. We all went out there and we went and had a great day. And from there. What was the score? What I shoot? Yeah.
5:32James Harrison:I haven't played in a long time. You see when he starts stuttering. Y 'all already know it was some trash. I shot really bad. I shot like a 95. I shot like a 95. Okay, 95. Almost 100. That's good, huh? Almost 100. You shoot 100%. I don't know how golf works. How did it work? So I shot like a 50-45, Debo. So you want to shoot 100. That's an A, right? That's an A. That's an A. That's terrible. You want to get closer to 72 is the better. So I normally shoot in the high 80s. You know what I'm saying? Like 86, 43 on the front, 43 on the back. That's normally my score, like right around 86. That's solid.
6:14James Harrison:This one I haven't played in a long time. So we did that. Then from there, Deebo, went to Jersey, ran back some more golf, went to Trout National, fire golf course, Mike Trout, Tiger Woods course. Okay, okay. I remember guest. I know what you're talking about. I remember that one because I was in the design of that course. I remember that. There you go. Ryan, Ryan. There we go. Just like you. Just lying. Yeah, I'm just, you know. Debo played in the member guest, my boy Ross. We came in fourth place, you know. Obviously, you didn't help. I did not help. I did not help. Ross played so good, but I brought the vibes.
6:52James Harrison:I was making sure he was good. We had the caddy, you know what I'm saying, kicking it. But Ross definitely played way better than me. I got to get my swings back right. I got to stop playing more often. You got to get back into the groove of it. I got to. Okay. Okay. So, and then after that, Debo, one more thing. After that, I went and got my brain and body scan. I went and got my hips checked out. What'd they find out about that old janky ass hip you got? Man, that hip janky, Debo. Where you going to get that done at, bro? Man, listen, I ain't going to get it done yet because they told me once I get it done, I can't play back.
7:26James Harrison:I can't run four-court basketball no more. Oh, you got to have it cut up. I got, man, listen, I'm going to have to get some, I'm going to have to like, I can do some rehab and stuff, but it's not going to get, I'm not going to start back doing my crazy windmills and stuff, I don't think. So, yeah. Windmill what? A windmill dunk. I lie. I used to go, I used to go windmill. You know, you can still windmill. Don't mean you go slamming in a 10 foot basket. I'm talking about a 10 foot regulation hoop, Debo. I was, I can, I can windmill. Not now. not anymore no more Joe look here man hey ladies and gentlemen we had a great time at FanFest over there Fanatics Fest sorry man I want to say Fanatics Fest the whole thing Fanatics Fest that way everybody know what we're talking about but shout out Stephanie McMahon for throwing me up on there Cam Ward great interview appreciate you stopping out for us boy Joe so So I went and I did body work.
8:32So as soon as I left New York, I flew to L.A., you know, so I could take care of my body. You went just running around gallivanting, not taking care of that old janky ass hip you got. I went on head, went straight to L.A., went to see my guy, Jimmy Bluff, got body work for about two or three days straight. Okay. So boom, boom, boom. About 12 hours of work, three, six, three. Great, great, great. Went from there straight to AZ. Got to AZ. Had to see my trainer, Ian Danny, PEP, performance enhancement professionals out there in Tempe, Arizona. Yep. You understand? Get some more work in. Get some more work.
9:17Running around, your hip janky and everything else. you want to play on golf and you can't even get your swing right. Like, it probably could have that hit.
9:27James Harrison:That's what I'm saying. I'm going to get it right, though. I really need to start, like you're saying, D-Bo, I got to start doing the, like I said, the dry needling, the thorough, I got to start doing it way more often. When I stop, that's what I'm saying. Listen, Joe, Joe, Joe, how do you think this works? You think you eat healthy for a while, then you ain't got to eat healthy for a while and you still go stay healthy? It don't work like that, Joe. My body. You got to maintain this maintenance, Joe. And I'm 5 '11". And I found out I was 5 '11". I told you. 180 pounds. I told you you wasn't no six foot and you 5 '11".
10:02But I grew. Because when I was in the combine. Now you been saying you six foot. Now you saying you grew. Bro. So you was actually 5 '10 something.
10:15James Harrison:I was 5 '10 and 7 '8 at the combine. And I was trying to tell you that I grew. So I knew I was over 5 '0". No, they just didn't measure it completely straight there because they was like, you know what? We're going to just give you the average. We're going to say it's 5 '11", because you was actually 5 '10", and a little bit over half. So he said, I'm going to just give you 5 '11". What? That's your doctor. Yeah, man. I can't even. 5 '11", 180.
10:455 '11", 180. Yep. listen Joe I'm just I'm trying I'm trying I'm trying to tell you man now after I got back I ain't gonna lie I ain't really do much or nothing man I did a little charity event I think it was Sunday no was that no what's today today Friday
11:04James Harrison:Friday bro 31st of July I'm tripping so it might have been like a couple days ago I went and did some it was at the zoo or something Presley Ridge I think they do a lot of things to help families kids adoption, all that other stuff is great. Great organization. But let's go on on here and see what happened with your boy over there. And well, I guess it's Philly. Is it Philly? Where'd your boy LeBron go, Joe? Oh, you know where LeBron went. LeBron went to Philly. Let me break it down to you. Debo, can you hear me? Yeah, I can hear you. This is the... You sound a little echoey. That's all. I was sad, honestly, at first.
11:54James Harrison:Initial thoughts. I wanted him to come back to Cleveland. Obviously. You know I wanted him to come back to Cleveland. Because of the court-sized seats and the connection that we have out there. I wanted us to be able to go there and be able to kick it with Bron. Hold up. Hold up. Who is us? I wanted it more for you. Who is us? Who is us? Us is me, you and the city of Cleveland. That's why when I say us when I wanted Braun to come back to Cleveland, I initially was just shocked and hurt because I'm like, damn! I wanted it for me, selfishly. I ain't gonna lie, Joe. I looked at your story. I think it was some tears.
12:31James Harrison:I was sad. I was sad, honestly, genuinely. Just because I wanted him to come back, I knew this was probably going to be his final time to see Braun. Just no matter what anybody says about LeBron, love him or hate him, He's eventually going to leave the league. So he said this is going to be his last decision. This is going to be his last team. I would have hoped to just being able to go to the Cavs games in the land, know how much they love him and having them a chance to win the championship because they do have a mob and he's coming for the low. He wasn't going to have to like take no other parts.
13:01James Harrison:And now when I see that he signed there for$4 million, for$8 million, I'm like, do he sign for vet men? Sign for vet men. So that's when you. I ain't going to lie, Joe. So I would, I don't, that's why, but that's why Debo, this, this move for me is really like, that's why I'm just like, it's, it's whatever Ron wanted to do. I was happy where Ron wanted to go. It's your decision, Ron. You've been playing in the league. You've done everybody justice. So why do you think he went to Philly then? Because they got the squad. They have a mob and it's not like they were already been winning championships.
13:36James Harrison:He wasn't going to go to the Warriors and playing with Steph Curry. You know, they already won some stuff. Go with San Antonio. Oh, no, they already won. He didn't go back to Miami. I thought that was going to be one. That would have been a smooth one with Giannis, the new squad they got. But I think Philly, just looking at the roster, and then they got Jalen Brown also. Just the players, Tyrese Maxey, the rookie DJ, Joel Embiid, just brought in Jalen Brown, and then you add in Braun and don't have to take away no pieces. So if you're just looking at that mob right there, that five, that's an unbelievable five.
14:10James Harrison:I don't care what anybody's talking about. The only thing they have to worry about is Joel Embiid's health. You know what I'm saying? Yes, yes. With Jella. So Joel Embiid's health. But with this team, knowing what you got to do, just make it to the playoffs. You have Joel Embiid on a real schedule where he's playing. I don't know. His schedule is going to look crazy. He might not be playing that many games. Half the season at max. Just making sure that when we get to the playoffs, when we get to the end, It sounds crazy. But last season was the first season he didn't have to come off for like a surgery or something.
14:42James Harrison:So I'm looking at Philly like they got a stacked mob. Tyrese Maxey is unbelievable. Jalen Brown, addition to this team, like he's one of the top 10 players in the league. And with addition with Bron and knowing that Bron now doesn't have to be going crazy, averaging 30. You got so many buckets on your team. Now you could just be passing. Bron always been good at passing. Now, Bron spotting up, being able to set people up. It looks crazy. Hey, hey, listen, let me slow you down a little bit because this podcast right here is going out and people are seeing this. Yes. And Dan Gilbert, he probably is going to see this.
15:26And right now, to me, it's sounding like you're a full-fledged Philly fan. And so when you try and get those court-sized seats that you've been getting blessed with, I want you to remember these words you were saying.
15:39James Harrison:This is what. I am making a basketball analysis. I'm still rooting for the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Cleveland Cavaliers are my basketball squad. That's my team. I want them dudes to win the championship. I think they're going to see. I think they're going to meet. So you want Brown to lose? If it comes that way.
16:03James Harrison:I don't want them to have to put me in if they put me in this situation, that's going to be the tough situation to be in, but I would love to have to be in that situation to figure it out. It's Philly. That's what you call a win-win situation for me. Who do you want to win? It ain't a such thing as a win-win situation, Joe, because if I ask you right now, we got Cleveland Browns and we got the Pittsburgh Steelers going against each other and whoever win that go win the Super Bowl. I know who you want to win. Who do you want to win it? It's impossible. Well, the Browns, because we need one first.
16:36James Harrison:Y 'all being stingy. Y 'all got two. No. Share the wealth. Browns need one before y 'all need another one. That's for sure. So I'm definitely going to go for it. What the hell with that, Joe? Now, Philly, Cleveland, who? In the Eastern Conference Finals, the same way the Browns and the Steelers are going to be in the AFC Championship. So if I'm going to watch and whoever plays better deserves to win, I'm rooting for both. Oh, it's good, man. It's good ball. Good ball. Oh, he's playing good. Hey, hey, hey. He's there to win. Mr. Gilbert, remember, he wants to see whoever plays best win. He don't want to see your Cleveland Cavaliers win that he says he's from the land of.

22:16James Harrison:Joe is with us. When Bron gets out the league, when Bron leaves the league, we only have Bron a little bit longer. You don't want Cleveland to have you and Bron to have it, huh? When Bron leaves the league, all Cavs. All Cavs. That's the squad. You talking about so many, Bron done went to what, 10 of them? He got three of them before him, something like that? What are you talking about? That's it. Share the wealth. What you talking about? Man, listen. You told me we can't get one because we already got six. You clearly need one before Pittsburgh get another one. Huh? Talking about the Browns. See, now, when you talking about the Cavs, Bron already went and delivered one for the Cavs.
22:53James Harrison:So that's why I'm not even... So why can't they get one without him? You don't want to see them succeed? I do want to see them succeed. You see what he is. I was rooting for them versus the Knicks with all I had, and we got swept, and I was still standing out there on my tent. Let's go, Cavs. Let's go Cavs. Okay. But, again, as I said, Philly, Cleveland. The winner wins a championship. Who you want to win? I just want the best team to win. Man, listen, man. Y 'all know what Joe is, man. For the next two seasons, there's 31 other teams. Name any other teams. Okay, so here. So you with Brian, Brian.
23:34You with Brian. So Philly going to win a championship, right? I did not say that. I'm asking you.
23:41James Harrison:It could happen. You think Philly going to win the championship? Man, they're going to be in the Easter Conference finals for sure. Hmm. This is crazy, Joe. This is crazy. I ain't never seen nothing like this in my life, Joe. You supposed to be from the land, the city that picked you number one. But you hoping and wishing against and praying against them. You ain't even got to even, you can't even stand on two toes and be like, yo, not even two toes and say I would like to see Cleveland win against Brown because I'm from the land I went there I was part of that's all me Mr. Gilbert he helps me he gives me I'm courtside he don't pick me up and throw me in the back row but you can't even do that let me tell you something I can't let that sway my visual of what I've been seeing going on the Cavs this offseason We didn't make any changes.
24:37James Harrison:And we got swept by the Knicks last year. I didn't say who could win. I said who would you want to win, Joe? I would want. I would want. Who would you want to win in that situation? That's what I'm saying, Joe. I can answer every situation if you put the Pittsburgh Steelers in it against. I don't care who it is. Other than Jesus Christ, I want Pittsburgh Steelers to win. What about if Dick LeBeau was coaching the other team? Coaching the other team. Yes. He was. The Titans. You're damn right. The Steelers. Okay. All right. Let a man to death. It's just, you know what? It's different because it's basketball too.
25:20James Harrison:I didn't play. I didn't play. And it's Bron. It's Bron. It's LeBron. It's my favorite player. Shoot me. God. You're going to get sued in a minute. When you go over there and get them tickets, you're going to feel like he's going to sue you when he gives you the price that he's giving everybody else. I got fellow Braun fans like me that know what I'm talking about. Who in the chat know what Joe talking about? Anybody? Anybody in the chat know what Joe talking about? Bro. Nobody. They do. They said X. No. They do. it's Brian then the land then Mr. Gilbert that's what they're saying I throw Mr. Gilbert in there like that man don't do that hey listen I'm just telling you that's what they're saying I'm not saying this I'm saying what's being said I'm saying what you're doing like they say I can show you better than I can tell you you showing me what it is you put me in a sticky situation I ain't putting you in a sticky situation man I'm just putting you in it that's what it is it's not even sticky
26:40it's clean and cut you asked me about Dick LeBeau the man I credit for my career if there's no Dick LeBeau there's no James Harrison like all that and if they got Dick LeBeau up against the Pittsburgh Steelers it's the Pittsburgh Steelers Joe yep
26:57James Harrison:But I think you feel the same way. Okay, that's why I still meet with the Browns. It's going to be the Browns then. What about the Cavs, Joe? It's just the Cavs. It ain't going to be the Cavs, huh? You ain't got that much love for the Cavs. That's what I understand. No, you don't. You showing me, man. Your words are taking me in your actions. LeBron's has a short amount of time still left to play in the league. LeBron done played 100 years, man. The Cavs are going to still be existing way after LeBron James is done. So for him to still be able to play for two more years, I'm going to give him.
27:33James Harrison:That's my man. I'm going to watch him. I'm embracing what he's got. Because the Cavs, I could be a Cavs fan when Bron's coming, Kyrese Kane. We got Donovan Mitchell. We got James Harden. Hey, listen, listen, listen, listen. I can go ahead and root for somebody. I can want to see them do great and do good. I can hope that they do great and do good. They could do great and do good, but I don't want you to do so great and so good that you beat my team. Joe, I want to see you shine, but not at the expense of a loss. I'd rather see Dick LeBeau go out there and shut us out in the kickoff and punt return and give up two touchdowns.
28:10Okay. But we got to win, Joe. I got to win. I hear you. I hear you. I hear you. It's just me. Man, listen here, man. Let's go on here and talk about this Stiller thing, man. We reported the camp over here. What was that, on Tuesday? We got three on the pub list. Little nephew, Joey Porter Jr., he on the pub list. Hey, my man back flared up during conditioning, after conditioning. Hey, I think I know what could solve that back flare. And Jalen, I guess he had a little knee issue from minicamp that's still going around. and what's that, a seventh round pick? Dante Kent, DB? Yeah, that's what it's looking like right now.
28:58Listen, man, I don't know what's going on. They said it's a couple weeks on Jalen, so I think he'll be all right. They're saying it's not a big deal, just time. But a little bit easy. I think, you know, I think that, I think, you know, you help his back out a little bit if, you know, if things get a little better, you know what I'm saying? If you get them numbers right, I think my man back might start feeling a little better. You know? And then, the big news, though, the great news we got is Broderick Jones is back. So, after eight months, eight months after sustaining a shocking season-ending neck injury, offensive tackle Broderick Jones took the field at St.
29:42Vincent's Camp after he was medically cleared for practice. I guess right now they're working him in with the twos at the left and right tackle, I guess, from the last two practices that we had. And they see him hopefully being able to get back to a starter level. Joe, that is a great thing, but 100 % cleared and 100 % it's two different things.
30:14James Harrison:It's great news. you know great news because you never know like when we said when you talked about the neck and i saw though samuel uh corner our corner um shante samuel jr he had the same surgery and they had the same agent so we ended up meeting with him and shante samuel jr is out there flying around you know i'm saying looking good so it's just giving me hope that you know project he's trying and what i realized and what i loved about his interview though debo is he understands the realization of the business of the game understands that there is a reason why like it was he was in it with Danny with Dan Moore you know I'm saying like just being able to see the league for what it is knowing like they're not just throwing you out but you got to show you know I'm saying because anybody can get hurt at any minute and so I'm just loving that he's being able to be back out there he's uh accepted to the fact that like it's he's not taking any hard feelings like oh no like why would they not accept my fifth year option it's a business he understands he got hurt there's a lot this big investment in there.
31:14James Harrison:So you just got to be able to go out there and prove that you can still be able to play at a starting caliber. So I think his mindset, just him trying to knowing that I got to get him being 300 pounds. He says he's got to put up a couple more, 15 more pounds because he wasn't able to do anything for like three months. So just his mindset, his mental, him understanding what's going on, the depth of the line, us being able to have linemen because people are going to get hurt. It's a very long season. So being able to know like him, being able to get max reps being able to get other guys reps in different positions and just as chugging along just knowing that he has that mindset where he knows that he wants to go out there he knows that he can start um McCarthy spoke on him like he's a starting caliber dude but just knowing that I'm happy that he's getting cleared he's able to get onto the field so we're just gonna be able to watch his progressions as he goes right yeah they're gonna you know obviously working back into it slow so he don't get no setbacks that's the whole reason you know they have a little bit of a rotation going there.
32:12Also, as we talked about, I'm trying not to mess, I'm trying not to mess, Ihanasher, that's it, as I say it right, Max Ihanasher, they actually started to work him in with some of the first teams, so he's getting some first team reps in there too, and then basically the, you know, the opening lineup for the offense was what it was, you know, through OTAs and And minicamp, I think it's Troy, then it's Isaac, Zach, Mason, and Cook on the other side. So, yeah, I don't, I'm trying to tell you, man, I think we're going to be good. I'm feeling real good. As long as he's able to work back, you know, and it's no setbacks, you know, I feel like we're going to be real good.
33:03I mean, I don't know. I don't know. We'll see. We'll see. We'll see. Another big thing I think people are talking about is, I guess, like McCarthy said, there will be no live tackling. Like, they saying, like, no tackling. Like, listen, what y 'all got to understand is you don't actually need to tackle somebody to the ground. When you say live, that means I'm wrapping you down to the ground and we going full go. What we do a lot is thud up. Hit, rap, release. So you break down, you hit, you wrap, you release, and you let them continue to run. You're just not taking people to the ground. They actually not go do any, like, tackling of any sort.
33:41That just don't make no sense. Like, Joe, what did you take from it? Because they're like, yo, they're not tackling.
33:49James Harrison:I think it's a lot of it, like you said, too, it's the safety. They're not going to be doing the tackling to the ground because a lot of that, when we would do tackling to the ground, it was the nine on sevens. It's inside. people are rolling up on each other every single time it happens. So when you get into the position where it's just now thudding up, getting yourself into that position, basically, if you don't, you have to stop that mass forward momentum. You have to be able to, you've got to put pads on pads. So there's like, you're not just diving around on people's legs and trying to do that.
34:17James Harrison:So I think thud up and thudding, doing thud drills is the same thing as making sure that you can get into that position, making sure you actually put them, make sure you stop their forward progress and then you let them go for pursuit and all of that so most of the time when we're saying people are doing live tackling it's not for that long of the practice it's a period right and dudes are getting hurt three four dudes in those seven plays so it's like how about we just really just throw people up getting to the right positions because sometimes it's not helping us it's more than it's hurting us yeah i think i think throwing up actually gets you in a better position to be able to make more secure and and tackles because now you have to get in there.
34:57You have to bend down. You have to put your head exactly where it should be and hit and wrap. It's no longer let me get there and dive at it. No, like I got to be ready to put that force into him so I can stop his momentum and drive him back and then wrap up so I can secure it so he can't spin out of that tackle. So yeah, I don't trip on that. Nothing was harder for the DBs because I'm like, when I sit right back, I'm going to get
35:20James Harrison:That's when I go for the legs. This is when I go do my part. I go shoot his legs out and wrap them up. Now they're like, no, Joe, you got to square him up, stop him. Boom. And I'm getting embraced. I'm like, okay, boom. I got him. So, you know what I'm saying? So, you got to get yourself in that position for sure. Yeah, definitely. I guess they went at Aaron Rodgers again, asking him. I guess he dismissed any idea that he might decide to come back for another season. He said, no, zero, debate, zero. he said, I thought last year might be it. And then Mike got hired, talked to my wife, and she said, you can do another year.
36:00I said, well, we'll see if it works out. And then it kind of all came together. DK was up before him, though. And DK was like, you know what? It's early in the year. It's too early to make a decision. He might not even get banged. No, he said he might not even get a... hit or touched, like, you know, like, he might not even get, no, that ain't gonna happen. No, no, no, no, no, no, no. Bruh, like, he might not even get hit or touched. Come on, DK, man. Stop that, man. DK was talking.
36:34James Harrison:Yeah, he just... I'm loving what A-Rod's saying. No point for debate. This year, he was already kind of trying to figure out if he wanted to stay with you. So it's final swan song. You got your coach out here. You got your receivers. y 'all running back you and DK fresh you know I'm saying last year was quick you didn't really know each other get to know each other really well and now let's yeah they're roaming together again they said yep let's go let's go and I'm A-Rod for sure because there's all of that offseason stuff where you can do what you want to do but it gets annoying to where everybody like well what's A-Rod gonna do is he gonna come back is he gonna stay is he gonna go is he gonna come is he gonna be and you have your time as soon as the season ends you get to chill you get your time to be able to make those decisions.
37:18James Harrison:But knowing now, like soon as the season's over guys, like all of that, that's a lot of noise. And he was doing it for the last two years. So I can only imagine just people constantly being on your head and then just being able to be like, this is my final season. I'm about to go give him all. I'm ready for it. Yeah. Yeah. I like it. I'm like, dude, I'm trying to tell you, man, listen, worst case, worst case for me, 13-4. Worst case for me, Joe, 13-4. I'm not mad at the Debo just because everybody's sleeping on the Steelers for real y 'all go ahead and sleep slumber sleep like Sleeping Beauty did Prince ain't nowhere in sight I'm just trying to tell you
37:59no question let's go on up over here to your let's go up north a little bit man over here to Cleveland man I guess y 'all y 'all actually y 'all quarterbacks and y 'all rookies reported on the 23rd. And then y 'all Vets reported Tuesday. So it wasn't even like a full team practice till Wednesday. Like, why you got your quarterbacks up there reporting like six days early? Like, Joe, what's going on?
38:28James Harrison:Quarterback is the most important position on the team. And we had some young quarterbacks, and we got a quarterback that's coming off some injuries and has some stuff to prove by making the big contract. and they're trying to put their best foot forward. I love it. Get in there, quarterbacks. You should not leave. That's why you make$65 million a year. This is not a on-season, off-season job. Get your ass in there. I need you to know not only what the quarterback does, you got to know what all the linemen do. You got to know what all the receivers do. You got to know what the running backs do.
39:02James Harrison:And then the checks. You need to know all of the checks. And after you do that, now the defenses, what are they doing? How do you recognize what these checks are? It's a whole lot more that quarterbacks have to deal with than receivers, than running backs, than linemen, than cornerbacks. Cover two always going to be cover two. Cover four going to be cover four. Cover three is going to be cover three. So as soon as I learn all of them. What's up, fam? I'm sports journalist Ari Chambers. Hey, what's up, y 'all? It's your girl, Sam Jay. And we're the hosts of Everyone Watches Women's Sports, a new podcast from Together and I Heart Women's Sports.

43:23I'm Jake Brennan, and on my podcast, Disgraceland, I tell the stories behind music's biggest names, the moments, rumors, and real-life events that helped shape their legacy. Like the story behind Sonic Youth that starts with downtown New York cool and ends with album art inspired by a true crime. Sonic Youth was not fronted by a groupie hustling alpha like David Lee Roth. No, Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore was an artist in love with a fellow artist who just happened to play bass in the same band with him and his other artist friends. Her name was Kim Gordon. And Thurston and Kim were every bit as cool as the couple on the cover of Goo.
44:05The same couple involved in one of the UK's darkest true crimes. Disgraceland is part of the Exactly Right Network. Listen to new episodes every Tuesday. Bonus episodes Thursday and rewinds on Sunday on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
44:23James Harrison:My job is going to be doing blitzes and all of that stuff. But as a corner, I got still cover three. There's going to be somebody replacing my job. Unless I blitz, there's only certain things that can happen. So then I start studying offense, route concepts. And that's how you become so much smarter. And that's why older quarterbacks, they don't have to be fast. You just got to know what's going on. Like you are walking out there, you're processing information. And that's how when corners get better, you don't, the defenses don't change. They're not going to invent new, like really new plays. Seven routes, post routes, slant routes, fade routes.
44:55James Harrison:All of the routes are the same routes. The route tree has been the route tree. So once you start learning the game and you start learning what you got to do as a quarterback, you got to learn what the offensive linemen, the receivers, the running backs, you learn what the defense is doing. Why are they doing this? You start getting more comfortable. and the more comfortable you get, the slower they say, oh, the game started slowing down for me around year three. Game started slowing down for me around year four. The quicker you can learn what's going on and you got your job under control. I know what I'm doing.
45:25James Harrison:I know what checks I got to make. Then you start going against the defense. Then you start making them, you start manipulating people to go to where you want them to go. So with the quarterbacks coming in, they're young. They have stuff to prove. Tyre Monk is like, y 'all, we don't have a, we have a quarterback on the team that's making $45 million a year, but we don't have a franchise quarterback in this building right now that I feel like that can prove us up the nose, what he got going on. Everybody in here can be taught. You know what I'm saying? Don't think you're too smart and you know too much.
45:54I was under the assumption he believed he had a possible two franchise quarterback.
45:59James Harrison:He's a possible two franchise, but haven't played like it in the last three years. Haven't put it on tape last season. Like you coming in off of a all pro, pro bowl, like the offensive player of the year season. No, no, no. There's none of that. All y 'all got to come in here and you can't tell me that you know something yet. Because what I've seen last year, what I've been looking at, ain't going to get the job done. You know what I'm saying? So come in here six days early with the rookies. Let's get this installed. And when the rest of the team come, we're going to redo the install. Quarterback, now y 'all just know.
46:33Y 'all are learning it.
46:34James Harrison:You're not learning it. You're just... give me an extra six days, I understand what you're saying, Joe, to do some more evaluation. Yes, you trying to blow my poison, that's what I'm saying, we need that. I understand, Joe, I understand. You know, I just got to give you hell, you know. That's just what I do, you know what I'm saying, I got to do a little something here and that. And it look like y 'all pup-less, it, damn, y 'all ain't got no pup. Yep, everybody out there. Everybody out there. You know how that go. Boys out there, because you know why. Because you know why. Why is that, Joe? Because them boys out there paying for it.
47:11James Harrison:Huh?
47:14Like, that and that. Joe, Joe, I. That.
47:23I ain't gonna lie. Y 'all trying to make it tough. You know? Y 'all trying to make it tough on us. Y 'all ain't have to do that. First off, y 'all gave Dale pick three-year, 48 million, with 36 guaranteed. okay and then right before y 'all gave him that y 'all ended up giving denzel ward this the problem
47:45James Harrison:you gave that man two year extension for 62 yeah 52 guarantee yes sir yes sir deservingly so we're doing the right thing we're trying to build we got rid of he he damn near 40 joe he's not denzel ward is 29 years old he's 29 years old has only played eight years in the he's basically signed that two-year extension. Denzel Ward has done what I call a master class. Only thing that they could give a knock about Denzel Ward is his injuries. He's had some concussions. He had some soft tissues. And then during COVID, he had four games that he missed for COVID. But when Denzel Ward is on the football field, he's a all pro every time.
48:31James Harrison:his technique, his tackling, his smarts, his ball skills. So he's been doing nothing. And you know what Denzel Ward does? He stays out the way. You don't hear anything about Denzel Ward besides him coming to work and doing his job. Only thing is that he might be a little injury prone, but some of the stuff you can't help. He had a couple of concussions and a couple of soft tissues. But when I look at Denzel Ward. You can help a concussion get your neck strong. Man, listen, I hear you. But he's been out there for eight seasons. he's had five pro bowls he's been all pro three times and he's been nothing but he stays out the way so he's balling he's staying out the way and this is what you do he signed a five-year 100 million dollar contract he's been out playing that contract so D-Bo when he gives them when he gives them this extension he has two years left on this deal this is just adding two more years so now they got Denzel for a four-year 94 million dollars that's averaging out for the next four years at$23 million for him.
49:29James Harrison:And the team looks good because he gets a raise, but now he gets two more years of guaranteed money. He had no more guaranteed money on his last contract. And it's a bump up for him and the team's good. And he gets two more years guaranteed. And then if he has two more years of non-guaranteed money, making around$22 million a year. So it works out for Denzel. It works out for the Browns. You keep an amazing player that's still playing at a high level with just a two-year extension. So they're going to have him until he's 33 years old. and I'm loving it for the Browns. They did it the right way.
49:59James Harrison:Denzel did it the right way. And he's from straight from when I left there, they drafted Denzel Ward and he done took it and ran with it. Yeah, you're making it tough on us over here, man. Come on. That's smart. That was smart. Man, I had two more years left. Y 'all could have waited till next year to do that. They just did. They did right by that. Yeah, you could have. Y 'all know what y 'all do. Miles got up out of there. and then so they left some they had some bread left on the table now take care of the guys yeah okay okay okay yeah I had a visitor though Coach Prine hey Coach Prine came up brother I guess he was up there yesterday and he was talking to the coach he gave him some insight they said gave him some insight here's the crazy thing man the guy Todd Munkin when they asked him, he was like, it was really cool.
50:59Deion Sanders, are you kidding me? Forget that he's Shadora's dad. I mean, first of all, he did an unbelievable job with Shadora. Great kid. And obviously an elite football player. Hell, baseball player. And then as a coach, I mean, wow. Everything that he's achieved, that was awesome. Then he went on to say he gave him a little bit of insight. Right. But we were up against it. The general manager, Andrew Berry, was next, was next. So I had to give him up to Andrew. So there was some back and forth as to being about Shador in terms of how he processes. personal-wise and I think competitive-wise, he got into it at the end in terms of what makes him tick, which was good.
51:55It was all good, but we've seen most of that. Most of what he said, we've been able to see. Now we haven't gotten to the games yet. That's a different animal. But at this point, what he talked about, I would have said, no, that's how we've seen it. That sounds like, to me. What sound like to you, Debo? It sound like Shadou starting quarterback. I'm just saying. That's what that sound like to you? Hey, man. That's what it sound like to you. Yes, sir. Hey. It sound like Shadou starting quarterback. But again, that's, you know, you know me. That's just me. That's just me because, you know, I do what I do.
52:43But when they asked him about the, you know, the quarterback competition, he said this right here. We got it right here. Yeah, nothing's really changed. We anticipate alternating. First of all, four quarterbacks are going to compete. They all won't get equal reps. Obviously, we will alternate just like we did in the spring with Deshaun and Shadour with the ones. The easiest way for me to say that, and it still won't stop you from asking, not you particularly, but everybody in general, is the first game. We're going to have to have a start of the first game, right? I mean, ultimately, I'm not going to decide who the starter is.
53:16They decide by their play. Their play decides who the starter is. I don't have any preconceived notions of how they played in the past or how they're going to play. I only can, with my eyes, judge. And guys got to play well around them. I think we've shored up some things up front. We've added some weapons on the perimeter, so I think that's going to help. But they'll decide who plays. I don't decide who plays. The players decide who plays.
53:46Yo. Yo. What you take from that? You know me. I like to read them between lines. I like to read the lines. I just read the lines there. That was the lines. That was what he said out of his mouth. So I'm just, where do you see, who do you see being the starting quarterback? I'm just going off of, I don't even know what happened. I know they was keeping the tracker going or who was throwing picks, who was making completions, and your boy was leading in the pick category, Shador was leading in the completion category and in the touchdown category. So I'm just trying to figure out where you see, where you at with this.
54:30James Harrison:First and foremost, the first thing was when Deion Sanders arrived. I respect and love that Todd Munkin is acting like a human being. Like that is Deion Sanders. You know what I'm saying? He's respecting his career. That is the father of Shador. You know what I'm saying? Just not trying to act like being submissive of Deion. Because that's when people like, you don't have to be all impressed. But at the same time, Deion Sanders was a coach. He did coach his son. He did coach. He's a Hall of Fame football player in the NFL. And then was the coach of his son in college football and did good at Colorado.
55:04James Harrison:So just from the respect factor, I just love the way that he was being a human being. It was like, damn, that is Deion Sanders. Secondly, when he talks about both of them are going to be getting reps, I think that Shador Sanders is going to probably win the job through training camp. I think that Todd Munkin is being honest where this is the thing. If it was up to the coach, then I think he wants to put the best player out there to play. Is it going to be someone that goes over his head? Is ownership going to step in and say, hey, look, we're paying this man this money, and I think that he should be the first one to go out there?
55:39James Harrison:I don't know. You know what I'm saying? So if it's Todd Monk is saying this from a legitimate space where, boom, best quarterback is going to take the job. We're going to have them equal reps. We're going to see what Deshaun looks like. We're going to see what Shador looks like. We're going to go into preseason and these reps are legitimately going to be what makes it happen. Does he throw picks? Is he looking people off? Does he know how to run the offense? Who's making who's making our offense look like it's a professional offense? So I think that Shador is going to win the job. But I don't know if there's going to be the powers that be that might step in and be like, look, he's getting that bread.
56:17James Harrison:We're still paying him. So I would want him to start. So if it's close, who do you think starts? if it's close, I would want Shadou. I got 61, half a dozen of the others. That's what they looking at. Like, I don't think it's going to be close like that. Just from how it started off, training camp. I don't think it's going to be close. Yeah, I don't think it's going to be close. But if it's close for me, I'm Shadou. I just got to go with Shadou. He's younger. He's going to have more time to improve and learn through the process. but I'm just saying just from how complimentary he was of Coach Prime I'm just like yo I just feel like hey we can't we can't go no other way the pedigree tell me I got to go that way but just you know just just from the conversation Joe I think that when Tahamonka says that I mean definitely him respecting Coach Prime but it's going to be on the football field I'm not I think that's your door Or if it's by, if it's a real competition and the coaches know and the players know, they're going to see.
57:25James Harrison:There's going to be ways where we're like, it's not. Somebody's playing, he's playing better than the other quarterback. This, like we say, even, I don't know where to give it. I think somebody's going to, I think Shibro's going to have to show that he's winning outright.
57:41Outright? I would, I would, outright, that's a big word. Outright. It's like, okay, I can look and just say, all right, it's done. Like, right now, just looking at what I was seeing from how they were tracking all this stuff, yeah. It's a no-brainer, like, right now. Like, the first few days of practice, it's a no-brainer. Unless, you know, unless he just, you know, he got it. Unless Watson got a warm-up for the first couple days, and then, you know, he come through. But that ain't what his numbers have been showing. That ain't what he's been showing the last whatever time it was that he was healthy before he ended up getting hurt.
58:17But like he said, he going to let the preseason, maybe he get into the, what if he get into the game and just strike out? He just like go crazy. Shador, Shador get in the game and he, you know, he played good, but why? He getting there and he just go crazy. What would you, what you going to do then? You only got three preseason games now. Remember, he strike out on the first two. You know, you ain't going to play your starter. Whoever, whoever you looking at starting for the third game, because you worried about him getting hurt.
58:44James Harrison:It's going to be more than these games too, Debo. I'm telling you, leading up to, you know, a training camp, when it's going ones versus ones, two situational footballs, like when we got two-minute drills, like all of these real practice reps, and when we leave that practice field in the training camp and you go to that meeting room and you're watching the tape, there's going to be real, what are you looking at here? Where are these balls going? So I think that there's going to be the coaches are legitimately, like, watching these tapes, watching all these 7-on-7s, watching all of these one-on-ones, watching all the throws, watching the way that they manage the offense, watching the way they get in and out of the huddle of just being like, how is this going to look?
59:19James Harrison:So I think if they're in a real competition, it's going to be coaches putting them in that film that we're not in. We're going to see the preseason, when they get to the preseason games, it's going to be like, all right, show us what you got. But I think the coach is going to have a decision, you know what I'm saying, by second, third week, by second week of training camp, by what is this dude looking like? That's going to be 14 practices. Dude, I know he said going into the first preseason game, he's going to have to name a start. and I'm assuming he's saying that that would be his starter for the start of camp or whatever it's going to be obviously I would think so but I don't think he's gonna have one I think he's gonna be like well we're gonna start this person this game and see how it goes and then we're gonna start the person oh no no no he's not going like that I'm trying to tell you man I really feel like that's what it's gonna be man you're not going like that I'm just I'm just telling you man, I got to itch, man.
1:00:11I got to itch. I feel like that's just...
1:00:13James Harrison:I feel like, Debo, once you get the quarterback the starting job, how many games? It's going to be, what, like at least four, five games minimum. And if you pull him after five and go for another quarterback, you can't put him... I'm saying the first preseason game, I don't think that starting quarterback is going to be a starting quarterback. I think they're going to... I think it's going to be he's going to start this one and then so-and-so. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. And then he'll start the next one and then so-and-so will rotate in. I don't think they go pick one until after the second game. That's what I'm saying.
1:00:47Yeah, I can feel that.
