In short

The Steelers’ decision to place a rare right-of-first-refusal/unrestricted free-agent tender on Aaron Rodgers, plus debate on whether Rodgers should return and how it affects Steelers QB development. The episode also features Brett Keisel joining and discussing his career and Steelers “brotherhood” culture.

Guest backgrounds

Brett Keisel (Fear the Beard), former Steelers defensive tackle; 13-year NFL career, drafted in 2002 in the 7th round (pick 242) from BYU; two-time Super Bowl champion. Hosts: James “Deebo” Harrison and Joe Hayden.

Key claims

The tender reportedly would pay Rodgers about $15M (10% raise off last year) and would restrict signing elsewhere until training camp begins; if he signs elsewhere later, the Steelers would have compensation rights. Hosts argue the Steelers shouldn’t “entertain” Rodgers too long and should prioritize Will Howard and Drew (drafted QB) reps. Keisel says it’s a good time to start fresh with young QBs, though veteran leadership is still valuable.

Notable examples

Keisel’s long-shot draft odds; discussion of Steelers QB options (Will Howard, Drew, Mason Rudolph) and the “live bullets”/training camp reps debate.

3:51Welcome back to this episode of Debo and Joe. I'm your host, James Debo Harrison, and I'm here with my co-host, Joe Hayden. Please make sure you like, subscribe, and download where you get the show. Debo and Joe fans, thank you for 75 ,000 over here on the YouTube. Holler at your boys.

4:12James Harrison:That's what I'm talking about, Debo. How you doing that day, Joe? I am doing great, brother Debo. Great day. Great day to be on the pod, talking to my good man. You know what I'm saying? We got a good man, Fear the Beard, coming. That's going to be later on, but we got a lot of stuff to talk about. We got a lot of things to talk about. Yes, sir. We got somebody that y 'all may know, Brett Kiesel or Kessel, as I like to call him. You know, he'll be here in about 30 minutes. Yes, sir. 30 minutes. He'll be here in about 30 minutes. But we got some breaking news popping over here with Aaron Rodgers.

4:56Uh-huh. Now. Come on with me. We literally just got this as we was talking, popping up on the two-minute countdown. Yeah. Aaron Rodgers, he was, the Steelers hitting with a unrestricted free agent tender, I guess. And according to a few sources over here, I guess Adam Scheffner said the Steelers placed a rare right of first refusal tender on Aaron Rodgers. meaning that he can accept a 10 % raise off a last year's salary, which would pay him about$15 million a season. And Aaron Rodgers would only be able to sign with the Steelers once training camp begins. That preserves the Steelers' right to receive a compensation.

6:00That word. I can't say that word. It's compensatory draft pick in the event that Aaron signs with another team while limiting his ability to sign with another team once training camp begins. So from Mike Flores, he said the Steelers would hold exclusive negotiating rights to Rodgers. So if he's thinking about staying home and waiting for a starter on another team to suffer an injury, the Steelers would hold his rights. To get Aaron at that point, a new team would have to work out a trade with the Steelers. okay so today's move complicates any potential plan for someone who is in the position to compete for a super bowl berth who needs his services so basically distiller's done said dude this is the first time i've ever heard of something like yeah me me either i think i heard

7:15James Harrison:like maybe when Tom was talking about leaving New England, did they have like he had to go talk to them before he would go sign anybody else? I don't know about that. I think his was more of when he was thinking about coming back again. And I think somebody, I don't know how that went, but I've never heard of this. I've heard of exclusive rights. Like I was in exclusive rights first time okay free so i only had two years but my contract was up so the exclusive rights free agent meant you can't talk to anybody but them but they're the only person that can offer you a deal so it don't matter if they offer you a deal for one year two years you better accept it because that's the only deal you're going to be able to get and that's crazy to me like that's the craziest thing that I ever heard of like in my you know and actually I think Willie Parker ended up being in that same situation the very first time his contract came up so but this right here I don't even know has this ever happened like all I know is this ever happened in the history I don't know if it's happening.

8:32James Harrison:And all I'm saying is I want the Steelers to move on. And I mean, at the same time, when they're saying he can't sign with anybody else, I can understand if A-Rod, if other people are trying to beat down the door. Like, and it's just I feel like it's kind of over with. And saying he can't sign with anybody else until training camp, it doesn't matter. I feel like having any involvement with A-Rod, we just got Drew, we got Will, we got Coach McCarty. If A-Rod wants to come back during the season, I could see if they just get the tender where somebody gets hurt and then A-Rod would have to talk to them and then they can get a pick for him if he returns or something like that.

9:15James Harrison:But I don't see anybody beating down A-Rod's door. I don't see why the Steelers keep entertaining him as much. Like, this is the thing. A-Rod, you deserve to do whatever you want to do. I understand that. You can come back when you want to. You don't have to tell nobody when you don't want to come back. You can chill. You can wait until when the season starts and be like, I'm feeling kind of good. Because you're 42 years old. Dead ass. You can go chill. You can ride up in the sunset. So us putting the timing and the time frame on you coming out, starters that are like vets won't show up to OTAs because some of the stuff isn't mandatory.

9:52James Harrison:and then you're not worried about the fines. You're not worried about anybody else's timetable but yours. But if you're the Steelers, you have legitimate timetables and you have legitimate things where we're trying to, and I don't see they're not doing anything around it. I see them doing the right things where getting your team around, you're getting receivers, you're getting offensive linemen. With this part, I see them doing the right things of building a proper team, a thousand percent. Still interacting with Aaron Rodgers as if you still need him is what's making me look at the Steelers. Like, I don't even feel like y 'all need to be entertaining what's going on because you're kind of just it's just too much.

10:31James Harrison:It's talk. We don't know what's going on. Y 'all are bringing up stuff, putting up the contract, whatever. It's just noise. And I feel like with a franchise like this, it just seems like it's just making you look a little weaker than you are. For sure. In my opinion. I think, so, this is what I think is happening. Please tell me. I think Aaron wants to come back. But I don't think Aaron wants to come back before training camp starts. Okay. He wants to do what he wants to do, whatever that may be. And then training camp come, he comes back. Now he goes in. He takes that time to build whatever rapport he needs to build with the team.

11:28You're saying, you're saying, do you say this is my thing? This right here, I'm saying he doesn't want to come back like until training camp. Until training camp. Okay. Yeah. So it says Aaron Rodgers would only be able to sign with the Steelers once training camp begins. So he can't sign with them right now at all. He can't sign with them until training camp begins. So I'm thinking this. They don't have some backdoor discussions. Aaron say, I want to play. OK, I want to play for you. Pittsburgh say, OK, well, how do we make sure we protect ourselves in the event? that you get a better deal through that process or however you may look at that they said all right this right here the unrestricted free agent tender offer and we're telling you right now you ain't gonna kill us on on this deal you will get 10 more if you want to come back and play for us you go get 15 you'll get 15 million you'll get 15 million you're saying you want to come back you're saying 15 million is good enough but you don't want to come back before training camp how do we protect ourselves to say that all right you ain't just trying to use us to get it get it get it you know to get a better leg up on something else you know what i'm saying or waiting you just waiting to see if like they said somebody get hurt and now you could you could drop down after training camp start so he would only be able to sign with the stillers once the training camp begins but i'm from what this is saying if he doesn't sign with the stillers and later ends up trying to sign with someone else, then they would have to negotiate with the Steelers to actually, I guess, get the rights for him then through the process.

13:20And they still have an opportunity, I guess, to match whatever that offer is. It ain't like teams are beating down the door for Aaron Rodgers right now. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's the whole part that I'm saying. Now, I'm cool, like, with this, if that's the case and you know this is the thing i would rather have aaron rogers there if we're saying he's going to help develop they got somebody that can give them you know nuggets of information can help like it's a whole fountain you know or information that you can get from this man that he could give to these young quarterbacks.

14:05James Harrison:For sure. I don't, this is the part that's starting to weigh me a little bit. But hold on, hold on. Let me finish. But if we go through the process of having Will as QB1, he's looking good, and we get into training camp, and then we sign Aaron, and then y 'all say, all right, Will, sit down. Aaron running it. I don't know if I like that. Debo, that's what's going to happen. I know, but I don't know if I like that. Neither do I. So, it don't say he got to start, do it. It don't say he got to start, but you heard when Will, if A-Rod walks in the building, A-Rod right now, training camp, you can't say any looking good training camp reps is going to take away from what Aaron Rodgers got.

14:52James Harrison:Aaron Rodgers walking in that locker room, everybody looking like this. All right, cool, Will. A-Rod's not going to be backing him up. You know what I'm saying? That's just not a thing. If you got Will doing it. I understand. You know what I'm saying? Oh, 100%. That's not a move. But the big thing is, I guess it gives us the opportunity to look at our two young quarterbacks. Yes. Because I don't see, you know, I don't see your boy Rudolph, you know, being a QB1 that they're going to be, you know, getting all their information, the fountain of youth that we want them drinking from. No, they need to be getting that fountain of youth.

15:33The fountain of information, sorry.

15:35James Harrison:They need to be getting that fountain of information from McCarthy. Like, love A-Rod. I understand that. Yeah, I can give you information from McCarthy, but what I can't give you is the nuances that's in there and playing that position. I got you. You know what I'm saying? I feel you. You can coach me. You can coach me. Yes. But if you ain't actually played my position and went and did that, you can't give me those nuggets that's like, okay, this and that, that and that. You know what I'm saying? This is what I'm saying, though. Will got it for a year, and with A-Rod, I love A-Rod. He's a great player, and when he gets in the locker room, he's definitely probably going to be giving them the communication.

16:10James Harrison:But the lack of communication that we need right now that's going on, like we're trying to really build a Super Bowl team. So the Patrick Mahomes, the Josh Allens, the Lamar Jacksons, the franchise quarterbacks that are making$60 million a year are in there right now establishing all of that stuff, getting all of that information. So A-Rod keeping us at hostage until we're like, OK, Will, Drew, we're going to come in this joint. Mark McCarthy, we got the team. We got all our bets. We're trying to build something. You know what I'm saying? For you to not even be able to talk to the team to know if you're going to come back, that's not 10 toes in.

16:46James Harrison:You know what I'm saying? So still, for sure, love A-Rod. Want him. He's amazing. But as a team, you're starting to look at it like, hold up. We can't keep all of our ducks in this barrel. That's the thing, bro. We ain't putting all our ducks in this barrel, bro. I understand. They would like to have A-Rod back. They don't need him back. And what they're telling him right now is that if you want to come back, we want you back. But this is the price you're going to get. You ain't getting 30 million. You ain't getting 40 million. You come back, it's going to come back because that's what you want to come back and do is play this game.

17:18And we would love to have you back. But if you don't come back, we are built to not have you back. We are built to be able to go out here and run this ball and do all the things necessary so that we can take pressure off of the quarterback position. But if we do have you, that's even better.

17:37James Harrison:Yeah. Yeah, I'm with you.

21:24Without him, we don't get 500.

21:30James Harrison:Yeah, but at the same time, a lot of, he didn't, it wasn't a lot of deep, it was a lot of dink and dunks. I mean, I could have had any competent quarterback could have really did what A-Rod. Who? I'm not going to knock him. Who did they put in there that was doing it, that did it? They put in, what was the dude? Mason? Rudolph? And what did he do immediately within a play? He threw a pick. We talked about Mason, and we said that he's not the answer. Right now, we have Will Howard that sat behind A-Rod for the year, and we just drafted Drew. So I'm still in the mindset of, let's take Will. We got Drew.

22:05James Harrison:Mason, he's the best three. And if A-Rod comes in, they're going to put him. They're going to put our dudes, our younger guys, that he sat behind A-Rod for the year, was able to learn and see how he went about his way. Now we got the coach. Likes Will. Now they're going to be able to learn on that. Now it's your time to show what you can really do. Or then we got Drew. Now then if Will Howard's going first, then we got Drew. I like these big style quarterbacks. And obviously McCarthy likes them because he drafted them. And he drafted them in the third round. Not too. We got Will in the fifth. And we still need to see what he can do.

22:39James Harrison:Give him his chance. He looked good in college. You know what I'm saying? So let these dudes grow. Drew was supposed to be a first-round pick, but they had a bad year in Penn State. You know what I'm saying? So he's a big-body quarterback. People expect it a lot. So let's just see. Give him some time. Let him grow. I'm one now. We got good, big-body quarterbacks that have youth, that have arm talent, that aren't small, that Mike McCarthy likes, said he liked. I'm not just putting words into his mouth. So use them. We got them for the low until we can see what's going to happen while you still are doing a great job building the team.

23:12James Harrison:So I'm with you 1 ,000%. The A-Rod thing, you are making a great point where it's 15 million. You're not going to get more. We got first rights of refusal. If you're going to play, you're going to bring your ass here, or we're going to be able to see what we can get for you. Respect that move 1 ,000%. I'm just like, as long as they steep, and they are doing the thing of building the team the same time. So they are doing a little bit of both. I just looking at it from the outside and to see how they're like, oh, no, you still worried about A-Rod? If A-Rod wants to come back, we would love to have him.

23:40James Harrison:He's going to be here for 15 million. And if he's not going to be on this team, we can still, you got to come talk to us first and then you can go play for somebody else. If somebody wants something, we're going to get compensation. My thing is this. They're like, okay, if you want to come back, then this is what the price is going to be. Now, they, you know, whatever, the right of first refusal, they're saying, well, if some team puts a actual sheet together and says, here, we're going to give A-Rod$30 million, they're going to say, hey, go ahead, give him$30 million. But I'm not going to let you sit here and be like, well, you know, I'm waiting on another team.

24:12They said they want to give me$45 million. Think we're going to jump. We're going to go do that. No, no, no. We're going to go do that. We'd like to have you back if you want to come back. The wanting to come back is a 10%. And what you did last year was a player price. And it's going to be 15 this year. If that's the case and that's something he wants to do, they're saying, all right. I'm thinking it has to be some type of discussion going on behind closed doors that we know nothing about. yeah that's like yo i want to come back but i ain't trying to come back before training camp so this is you know this is what and they saying okay cool if that's the case let's throw this together and if that's really how you feel then the easiest thing to do is to go ahead come back when training camp start and we we go from there and there's no confusion we protect ourselves from you trying to say that you know whatever's going on is going on and in that process we get to look to see what, you know, Drew and Will can do.

25:12Yeah, so, like... We gonna see... I ain't never heard of this, though.

Read the full transcript

25:17James Harrison:I ain't never heard of it either. Like, I ain't never heard of this. I don't know if I like it or not, but... I mean, I like it if A-Rod's gotta talk to them about the contract that he gonna get, and if he's gonna... They ain't even gotta talk. He has to have a sheet, like, he has to... Yeah, that's what I'm saying. That's what I'm saying. The offer. He got to have an offer. So, you know, ain't no team about to go and be like, you know, some coaches, well, you know, if you got a coach that really give a damn about you and whatever, you know, he going to bring you in for an interview. You know what I'm saying?

25:52No matter what, just to show that you're desired. Like, you know, if we good, you the head coach or whatever, you go bring me in. I'm looking for a D coordinator job. You go bring me in and you just go give me an interview for a D coordinator job. Why? That's going to show the team's interest. Somebody else going to bring me in. That's a little different. The offer sheet says, hey, here, we're about to pay you this. No, no. Facts. Ain't nobody going to be like, hey, you're going to give me 40.

26:17James Harrison:I've never seen this in a football contract, but I mean, I've seen this during before in business. I ain't, bro. That's wild. You've been playing for 30 years and you go put, you go put, that's crazy. Mm-hmm. Yeah, you're going to give us your – you're going to give us – you're going to have to play for us. I mean, it's kind of cool, though, too, because it actually tells him, all right, we're going to give you 15 no matter what. Like, you got that coming as soon as training camp hits, if you want it. That's crazy work. I would want him – yeah. I know he got time, but wouldn't you – yeah. Wouldn't you want your QB in there, though?

27:02you got to realize man you're talking about Aaron Rodgers you know you know Aaron like do you know a little bit ayahuasca and all that other stuff you know what I'm saying you know he might be out there floating in you know in the in the galaxy I know or something you know but now you got your new receivers and everything and it's just a quarterback I want to get that get to the flow I understand what you're saying so but you you sitting there and you letting your young guys get all that through the OTAs, through the –

27:30James Harrison:And they're going to be – if A-Rod comes back, then they're going to be sitting. They'll be sitting, but they'll still get reps in training camp. But if he came right now, they ain't getting nothing. All right, man, listen, it don't matter. If A-Rod's going to be playing in the games, don't get nothing. It don't matter. All that's just – It matters. You get to see development to who it is that's going to go in after that. It's going to be a total different situation. All them is underwear reps. Dudes look way better on them. I understand that they're underwear reps. But it's still actual practice, bro.

28:07James Harrison:I know. You get to see something. I got you. I got you, Debo. I just want them dudes to get live bullets. You can't get live bullets no more. How many starters actually playing preseason games? No, Debo, I'm talking about the real game. I understand what you're saying, but if that's the case, then to hell with training camp, OTAs, and everything else. No. Let's not do nothing until we get back for the first game of the season, Joe. No, no, no, no. That's what you're saying. Don't nothing else matter but live bullets. No, no, no. All this stuff matters, D-Bow. Okay. All of it matters. All it matters, especially when you're younger, especially as you're going to learn.

28:44James Harrison:You got to learn it. A-Rod already knows all of this stuff. I'm just saying. Joe, I ain't mad at you, bro. I ain't mad at you. I don't understand what you're saying. I'm at the point. Like I said, I'm at the point like, hey, we got what we got. We got what we got. And we got Drew. And guess what else we got? Let's roll with Will, see what we got, and keep it going, and let them switch back and forth however you want to roll them reps out. And boom. And through the process of whatever we get, we get. And then we go and figure out. I hate to say it, dude. I really, I've been saying it. But, like, dude, we got to have – we need – if we go try and get a quarterback at that position that is needed to get a franchise quarterback, man, we going to have to be in the basement for at least a year.

29:30We going to have to be – we going to have to be, like, pumping sewage out this moment.

29:35James Harrison:No, we're not. No, we're not. Right, like – No, we're not. The team is going to be – Unless we trade everything to jump up. Yeah, yeah. When you get 21, trade something. Yes. when we went and got from 21 to 11 and got Devin Bush, it is possible. You need to go up and jump up and get that one. 11 is not going to get you that quarterback. What you need? One? You need at least three. Top three. If that's all we need, we got to go ahead and get it. If that's all you need. Bruh. Debo, you got to do what you got to do. I really feel like we're going to be in the worst situation as far as draft coming next year because I feel like we're going to win.

30:19And I feel like we're going to actually get into the playoffs and win at least one game. That's what I feel like. And then... If we do that... Where did that put us at?

30:30James Harrison:It depends on with what quarterback for me. If we got... If we get to the playoff game and win a playoff... I feel like we definitely win a playoff game. if A-Rod comes back we definitely win because the team the roster's just better

30:49James Harrison:and then he gone and then finally Will was sitting behind him for two years then you know what I'm saying Drew was sitting behind him for a year but I'm liking Drew Will already sat behind him for a year and that 15 mil right there that could go to more resources to help listen Listen, trial by fire. Trial by fire. Like you said, the live bullets. You got to get in there. Live bullets. You got to see what's going to happen.

31:27Like, what?

31:30James Harrison:Yeah, I would. A-Rod with this better roster with these receivers, you know. with people. DK going to have to just have it. Everybody's going to just have to perform to the highest level. We're going to see it. Give them opportunities. We run that ball effectively. Run that ball effectively. That's going to open up everything. Okay? Point blank period, man. Point blank period. It's nothing that will be more effective than a run game that will open up everything else.

32:08like we're building that it looks like it dude that's just you can't tell me we ain't gonna have a better team than what we had last year we ain't got better coaching than what we had you know last year as far as every position position you know like we there we there right now like you can't tell me this staff from top to bottom ain't better than the previous staff that we had. We got the proof. Dude, we got people that can coach. You know how many coaches over there that was just there? You developed this guy, that guy. Stop, man. That guy was doing that before you even got there, man.

32:58James Harrison:You know how that is, though, too deep. But we're going to see. Proof it's in the pudding. We're going to watch. Look here, man. Look here. Let's get into it, man. man, because I done eyeballed something, man. Uh-oh. I done eyeballed something, man. Look here, man. We got a guy that was drafted in 2002 in the seventh round. Pick 242, Joe. Out of Brigham Young University. Big one. Okay, Joe. Yes, sir. When you drafted that low back then, you won't know about being drafted that low. It's about a 50 % chance that you even make the 53-man roster. Come on. It's only a 20 % chance that you make it three years or more, okay?

33:42Okay. So becoming a full-time, long-term starter, okay, is about 5%. But he would go on to have a 13-year NFL career. Hey, Joe. Come on. That is 1 % or less that actually do that.

34:01James Harrison:Man, the past week. Super Bowl 2010, two-time Super Bowl champion. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome my BFF, also known as the Beard, Brett Kiesel. Yes, sir. Woo-woo. D-Bo, you got to be my hype dude every time. That was nice. Hey, baby, listen. I tell you, baby, I'm going to bring you in right. You got some wrestling history. Hey, I'm going to bring you in right, baby. It's only, I got to show love to everybody. See, they messed me up last time, and they just threw Ike in there, and I ain't get the chance to make it. They kind of upset me. Man, I appreciate that intro, Devo. That was nice.

34:43I like how you was talking it to Joe like he didn't know, too. Well, what's up with that, Joe?

34:48James Harrison:Man, that's what I'm saying. I know. I know exactly what's going on, Brad. Good to see you both, man. Good to see you, too, brother. Yes, sir, man. Thank you for joining us. Thank you for joining us. Look here, man. High school. It's called Great Bull. Great Bull High School? That's right. I like that. Great Bull. Great Bull. Did they have a bull riding team? No. We didn't really have a rodeo team either, but a lot of people that I went to school with participated in the rodeo. Not too many bull riders. I know how much you want to ride the bull next time they come into town. You're ready, right?

35:30You're ready to get... Told you. Listen, that damn bull used to bouncing around them 130-pounders, man. I'm going to put that 260 on his back. He'll be like, what the hell? You know what I'm saying? Hey, I know people will pay to see that, Debo. That's a fact.

35:47James Harrison:Sign me up. I'm ready to go. Hey, man, listen. Bro, Debo Strong. Did you see the breaking news about the tender that they gave to Aaron Rodgers? I guess the unrestricted free agent tender. where he'll get a 10 % raise in his salary. What is your opinion on Aaron Rodgers coming back, not coming back, the position of us and what we're doing in the process of dealing with him? Yeah, I think Aaron came in last year and did a good job. I mean, I think he did a good job. I think he was a great leader for a lot of that team and a lot of those young quarterbacks to learn from such, you know, a Hall of Fame quarterback.

36:29I think as you get older, you know, it's hard to stay on top of your game. It's hard to be what you were when you were, you know, in your eighth, ninth year. I felt like that's about when I was in my prime about that. Things started to slowly wrinkle down just a little bit. But QBs is different, you know. QBs are playing for a long time now, and we can't hit quarterbacks anymore as a defensive player. And that's probably a big reason for that. But, you know, I want them to give these young guys a look. Like, I'm a Howard fan. I think, you know, I was impressed with him when he was in college. I really hoped that they could get him and Jack Sawyer.

37:12And it just turned out that we got both of them. So, I think both of those guys are Steelers. I like, you know, starting fresh. Like, if there's ever been a time to start fresh, now's the time to do it. And, you know, I'm not saying you don't want to have that veteran leadership in the room. You need someone in there. But if there's ever a time to start fresh, might be now. Yeah. Yeah. Like I said, I'm, you know, if we can get him and he wants to come and they know he wants to come. Yeah. But I'm at the point like, yo, that'll just give us another year of, you know, just above the board, putting us at draft 16, 17, 18, whatever it may be, and we don't get a chance to actually see what our young guys can do if they could be that QB1.

38:00You know what I'm saying? I still, though, Debo, I feel like he's coming. I mean, it was kind of like... Oh, after this, I feel like for sure he's coming. Yeah, I mean, he's coming. So it'll be, you know, hopefully he can lead the team. I know he's familiar with Coach McCarthy and, you know, how to do his system and how to get those guys going. I'm sure it's a similar system. I mean, you and I played the same system the whole time. We were fortunate, you know. We didn't have to learn a whole bunch of playbooks and whatnot. But I think, you know, he's coming, and we need to get back to winning some playoff games around here.

42:18Yes. We're used to that. And they've made it. They've made it. They've made it. but it's time to win and and make make some noise and you know we're trying to hoist seven of those beautiful platinum things that you got behind you there Debo up in the air yes sir yes sir that's that's the goal of every season it's only one team that succeeds man only one team that succeeds okay everybody else fails so it's no you know uh you know uh what do you call it?

42:54James Harrison:Participation trophy. Participation trophy. Yeah. If you ain't got the Lombardi, you lost. If you ain't first, you're last. They hit you real short. Hey, if you ain't first, you're last, baby. What are you talking about? What are you talking about? Bobby said it. You know? So, look, I was going to ask you, too. Obviously, I'm a big basketball fan. Deebo, not so much. I heard that you played basketball with your first love. That's what you wanted to do. That's right, Joe. Yeah. I love basketball. I was a huge, huge, huge up. I really did think I was going to the NBA when I was about 15, you know.

43:28I was doing my push-ups and going out, working on my left hand, my left hand, right hand, dribbling. I was a post player, you know. I played down low. But there was one thing that always got me with hoops, man, and it was like I was always in foul trouble, Joe. Oh, yes. I was always sitting down because of fouls. So football was a better fit for me. And, you know, I can foul people and that gets celebrated. But I loved basketball, you know. It was fun coming out to the Steelers because we had the Steelers footballers basketball team. Yes. It was a circuit. Hey, Joe, hey, listen. That's what I needed.

44:12That's what I needed to be a part of. Tell Joe that before I had my back surgeries, I could dunk. You could. I mean, it was kind of like you just get it over the rim and hopefully the finger roll it in there a little bit.

44:27James Harrison:He was saw. You weren't two-handed flushing. Oh, no. Hell no. He was baby dunking. I never saw a two-handed dunk from you, Debo. Hey, listen. He's with the play, though, real talk. That boy go baseline on him. Boom, boom. Your big thing was the half-court shot. I've never seen anyone stroke, aside from Steph Curry, that can stroke it down half court like he's up. Thank you. Tell him, my half court shot was wicked. It was pretty good. That's what it is. That was a part of our off. Did you? Oh. I think he froze up. I think my dog breath froze up. Did you cut out? Did you hit your mic, Keyes? Players on that Steeler team, like, when we go play, We played like some games and a lot of me against faculty or, you know, people at the school or whatever.

45:26And, man, we'd full court press. Like, it was a great workout. Ike Taylor was really smooth. He could jump out the gym. Nate Washington could jump out the gym. You know, we had Troy and Antoine Randall, both of those guys. L was cool. Yeah, I called him. It was smooth, man. L was real smooth on the court. Yeah, you know L played for Bobby Knight over there. Yeah, it was awesome. So I love basketball, but it was just, you know, I'm grateful I made the choice to go to BYU and to play football and to chase that NFL dream because it led me here to Pittsburgh. It led me to be with some of my greatest friends and teammates and people I look up to, you know, that are my brothers now, which is amazing.

46:13Yeah, definitely, definitely. Keys, the comparisons of, not even comparisons, the difference, what you feel the difference is in the teammates' defenses from our past to what we have now as far as, you know, the legacy of still the defense and the camaraderie. I think that we're missing that brother, like real life brother component of being like with each other. Like, I don't think people realize how much time we actually spent together outside of football. You know, like we would spend more time with each other than we sometimes we did with our own family. Right. Yeah. I think that was such a big catalyst for our success, bro.

47:02You know, being able to not only enjoy going into work together, but liking each other so much and opening, you know, your lives up to each other so much that you become blood. And it's it was an awesome time to be a part of that, because not only did we like come to each other's houses and kick it and whatnot, but there was always something going on. Like Poxy always had people over for getting, you know, worked on their bodies and massages and acupuncture. Sure. And there would always be food in there, and there would be some card games going on. Yep. And game building, like the O-line would always have the boys together and meet with us, the D-line.

47:42We just kind of roamed around with everybody. Yeah. Ben had his boys over doing stuff, playing cards on Monday night football every week. You know, it was just a great time because it seemed like not only would we go kick it with one another, but then, you know, as the week would go, on it was like so-and-so's got a charity event you know what i mean i need you to show up and come support the thing because we all have things that that meant a lot to us you know whether it's cancer leukemia i mean you know cystic fibrosis like all kinds of things that a lot of us have been dealt with and want to help out with and we would always help each other there too so i think you're 100 % right I I don't I'm not sure that that brotherhood that family feeling is still there I want it I believe it is but I think they need to definitely really go out of their way this year to team build and work together yeah yeah I don't I don't I like I said I think it's there but I don't think it's to the level of what it is actually I know like certain things of it aren't to that level you know especially now with a lot of guys you know it's almost like guys want to have their own shine like they can't you know they can't be in the same you know shine with with everybody else dude we'd go out to a like club to kick it dude we're in there like 30 deep 35 yeah the whole team bro like if you ain't there we used to watch the nba finals down at high tops we get done with otas you know go down there get some food watch the finals at night like that's what it's about like finding ways to get to know your teammates outside of the work you know You're going to have the work.

49:22That work's going to be there and whatnot. But if you really get to understand and know your teammates and their families, like, mess James' dad out, like, met Ryan Clark's dad out, Troy's family out. He's who came to my dad's funeral, actually. Oh, man. See? Hey, hey, hey, listen, listen. I got to speak, too. That was nice. Hey, he goes up there to speak, right? You talk about family. Hold up, bro. Listen, listen. As soon as he starts walking up there, he turns. As he's walking, he turns and he looks at me. I already know the story he's about to tell, right? And it just made me laugh, bro. Like, it just made me laugh, man.

49:59It was great, though. It was great. Like, he goes up. We went fishing. Like, Troy, I mean, Kiesel, you can tell the story, man. Yeah, so James always would invite me to come up fishing with him up at Lake Erie, you know, go out and get a cooler full of walleye, come back, cook him up, you know, family over. So we go up fishing. It was one of my first times going up there. we went far like we went what was it port clinton we went there we went to port clinton yeah and then we went out about you know about six eight miles whatever it was james is like i'm pick you up at like three in the morning i'm like whoo hey let's go picks me up we drive all the way up there you know we'll get there on the boat we go out dad's there and who else was there like your brother-in-law it was uh it was my my uh my uncle i call him my uncle it was uncle yeah yeah yeah so we go out on the water we're fishing fishing james and his dad and these guys are like hammering fish and i'm not catching a thing and they're like kind of looking at me like you said you were like an outdoorsman or something like what's your problem and uh big beard you know yeah james james's dad looked up came over he like patted me on the shoulder.

51:11He's like, you know what your problem is, son? And I was like, what's that, sir? He goes, you ain't holding your mouth right. You got to put him up. I was like, okay, pops. And man, didn't I do it? I started cooking him up, baby.

51:28James Harrison:Yeah. Yes. Yes. Oh, it's a certain way you got to stand it. That's what we do when you ain't catching no fish. We be like, hey, boy, you ain't holding your mouth right. Hey, you ain't doing something right. You ain't doing something right. Hey, you just tell him, you just tell him, hey. Switch it up. Yeah, switch it up. Switch it up. Open your mouth a little bit. You started catching them things as soon as you switch it up. Hey, it don't, it don't, it don't really matter. It's just in your mind. Oh, I was, I was about, I was about to say, how the fish know? Right away. And Debo's driving, you know, fast going up there.

52:05He's flying going up there. And on the way back, he's like, yo, man, why don't you drive? I need to answer some emails or something. And I was like, okay, no cool problem. Man, I'm barely going fast and I got pulled over. I was like, hey,

52:23didn't they let you go though? Yeah, they let me go. He gave me a walk. Yeah, good, good, good. Bro, I was smoking up there. Oh, no. Bro, I'm talking, you know, cruise control 85, something like that. I'm bopping above because I'm trying to get there. Yeah. Man, Kuzer was about eight over, and they popped his ass. I was like, what the hell? I'm doing like a hook here, and I'm doing like seven over. Man, yeah, dude. Hey, Joe, we got to take the fish.

52:54James Harrison:As a matter of fact, that's what I'm saying. Please. I've only been fishing one time. You like to fish, Joe? I've only been fishing once. Oh, man. Yeah, we got to. I'm ready. We got to get you. No, trust me. Trust me. I'm ready to get in my fishing bag. That's been one of the best things about James and I's friendship, honestly, is him inviting me up there to hang out with his family. And I've done the same to him. We go out to the farm. Yeah, Kiesel got a farm. We hang out in the woods. Matter of fact, Kiesel got a farm, bro, and he actually has Angus, Longhorn, and Langus. It's a mix of Angus and Longhorn, dude.

53:36and you can buy that good meat from him. Hey, kids, let him, how long you been doing that actually? Like how long you been doing that? I got my farm in 2016 and out in Summer County. It's a beautiful little spot that borders a lot of state game lands. It's about 250 acres, but it feels a lot bigger than that. But it's great. I got a nice couple living out there taking care of the spot while I'm away. and yeah I got registered Texas Longhorns and Angus and then I my my bulls and Angus my bull is actually named Chief named Chief the Chief yeah tell him how you named your bulls I had to call and ask Mr.

54:24Rooney if I could name my bull after the Chief and he said sure but I did the same thing with a lot of my you know I got Bull Cower and I got Dick LaBelle

54:38I got Paula Malamu and Hornsward who else Debo I always throw one out to him but what do you always say James hey my bull the longhorn I got that go be called Debo that boy gotta be solid black

54:58James Harrison:solid it gotta be a certain bull solid black midnight okay okay Debo's very specific about his bull. D-bull. D-bull. Listen, I already sent him the picture of the bull, what he got to look like. I even said, hey, man, listen, let me know, man. I go ahead and try to find out how I can get it. He just don't want to listen to me, man. He just don't want that. The stallion that I sent him the picture of. Yes. You sent him the picture of you? He was nice. Yeah, he surfed the web and found a beautiful black bull, exactly what he wanted. He's like, this needs to be your bull. And I just disagreed. I wanted something different.

55:41Hey, Brett. Kiesel don't want no black bulls. Kiesel don't want no black bulls. Oh, man.

55:48James Harrison:Kiesel naming us. Kiesel got perfect names for these bulls. He's doing perfect. Debo out here sending you what to buy for your... Man, listen. Don't do that. I told him I would buy it. All you got to do is take it. Keep it. I already did James a solid. I already did James a solid because he wouldn't let me name anything Debo because I didn't have anything that was solid black. But I had a horse. Yeah, okay. I was going to have a colt. And I like riding horses, and I've been training him, but he's almost three years old. But he was born on James' birthday. Yep. And so I got baby James the horse.

56:24James Harrison:Come on. James comes over on his birthday every year. We have some cake, some carrot cake. Yeah. And, you know, this year I'm asking you, James, are you going to get on him? I've been riding him. I'm going to get on him. You said he's ready to hold the weight, right? He's ready to hold the weight. He can hold you. Yeah, he can hold you. He might squirrel around a little bit with you, but you got to hang on him. You're ready to ride a bull. So this will be - Listen, they ain't nothing. The horse is nothing, man. Listen, man, you see how I twirl him around. I was - Listen, I've been training him once a year.

56:58I train him once a year.

56:59James Harrison:That man went from the Deebo Bull to the Baby James the horse. No, he ain't little no more. He ain't little no more. Hey, I rode James for like 13th season, man. It's nice to be able to do that for another 20.

57:16Funny guy, young. Bro, you out of control, man. You out of control. Y 'all dudes, man. This is Martha Stewart from the Martha Stewart Podcast. Ever wonder how to make hosting look effortless?
