In short

The episode is a wide-ranging NFL draft discussion focused on (1) AI use in scouting and (2) current roster/trade talk, plus (3) practice/training camp debate.

Guests

Eric Galko, director of the NFL’s East-West Shrine Bowl, joins to explain how teams evaluate prospects, including “hidden traits” and common franchise mistakes. The hosts also discuss AJ Brown trade rumors, Zay Flowers’ comments about John Harbaugh’s practice intensity, and contract/guarantee rules for first-round picks.

Key claims

Galko says teams are using AI in some form, but it shouldn’t replace tape; AI can organize stats and generate ideas, while scouts must still make judgments. The hosts argue modern practices may contribute to soft-tissue injuries due to less real full-contact build-up.

Notable examples

AI scouting/projection for draft prospects; AJ Brown to the Patriots after the June 1 deadline (cap-split timing); Zay Flowers criticizing Harbaugh for hard practices causing injuries; first-round contracts being fully guaranteed for four years with a fifth-year option.

You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media. Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show. This is a place for raw, unfiltered conversations with athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. So let's get to it. 2:07James Harrison:Then she says, have you seen a photo of my son? And I'm like, who is this person? Welcome to the Boys and Girls podcast. Arranged marriage is basically a reality show, and you're auditioning for your soulmate. And who's judging? Only your entire family? I sacrificed myself to this ancient tradition, hoping to find love the right way. And instead, I found chaos, comedy, and a lot of cringe. Listen to Boys and Girls on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. On paper, the three hosts of the Nick Dickens poll show are geniuses. We can explain how AI works, data centers, but there are certain things that we don't necessarily understand.

2:50James Harrison:Better version of play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Yes. Which, by the way, wasn't Taylor Swift who said that for the first time. I actually, I thought it was. I got that wrong. But hey, no one's perfect. We're pretty close, though. Listen to the Nick, Dick, and Paul show on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. GM for the 49ers, John Looch. Luch, he said he uses AI to scout players and project in draft process. Listen to this, brother. In terms of using AI to get into players and whether that's background checks or projecting on what they can do and how the draft would unfold.

3:26James Harrison:Yeah, a lot. I think just like the rest of the world, I think, you know, if you aren't using it, you're already behind. And the cool thing is, you know, what we found, you don't need to be an expert. you know just like you at home planning a travel itinerary you can just ask the thing and it can spit out some pretty good things um some pretty good ideas um you know our developers i think uh i think we're fortunate to be where we are kind of the epicenter of the innovation there and we've tried to take advantage of that um and um you know i i do think every team is probably using it in some form or fashion.

4:08James Harrison:And I think that will only increase as we move forward. Joe, are you down with AI? You're not down with AI, would you? Are you down with AI? Man, I'm not not down with AI. And the thing is, you just don't want to make it the main thing. It's not the whole thing. It does a good job of like, you know, putting up stats and being able to line stuff up and organize and things, but I think you just can't make it the main thing. Everybody's implementing a little bit of something. Obviously, you don't want to be behind in the game and being able to make charts and stats and stuff like that, but I'm thinking there's nothing like watching tape, and you can't see how people are moving and being able to really see players on film.

4:56James Harrison:I think that's a real live thing, and just AI as far as charting and stuff like that, cool but that's not the reason why no legitimately like that that means no this players are good i'm like that i'm not understanding that i'm with the eye in the sky don't lie it takes you to be able to know like breaks and tackles and being able to see dudes movements i really feel like when you watch a guy you know like do players know doing good good good evaluators of talent like it's not he moves differently and when you see people and you got it like you said though that's opinion that's opinion because that's that's that's somebody's opinion of what they're looking at the only thing like you said ai factual like when you put that truth protocol in there it ain't nothing in there that's gonna say hey it's a fact that this player is gonna do this or do that it's gonna it's gonna give you opinions because like if if you put a truth protocol in there it's gonna give you opinions like it's gonna give you a whole bunch of opinions that are done pull it up and all that which could help you if you ain't did no research on the person but if you're actually projecting to draft somebody i'm thinking you're going to go ahead and do the research and then again i'm the person who's doing the evaluation are they a good evaluator do they evaluate well can they that that all comes down to it but as far as numbers like what what your numbers look like against a certain player certain number of stats yeah cool like number stuff yeah that that would help um i ain't got no problem with it either way unless you're actually just using it point blank period and you're not coming to your own conclusions Yeah.

6:21Then it's an issue. Yep.

6:24James Harrison:Unless you basically like using it like a college kid for homework. Straight. Straight copy, paste, chat GBT. Here you go. Hey, man, you got to have good scouts, man. You got to hire the right people. You know what I'm saying? Now, the Cardinals, I don't know how true this is. Okay. It says if the Cardinals were to select Notre Dame's running back, Jeremiah Love at number three, I don't know how that gained any traction. But they said he would get a four-year,$50.5 million fully guaranteed contract. Okay? Like, that's more money. I mean, 12.6 average a year. Seventh among running backs in the NFL.

7:05Yo. Yes. I want to know, is that just because he's number three? Like, I don't know how to catch that. It's number three.

7:12James Harrison:The draft picks are slotted each year, so it just goes up. from the year before. Whoever was number three, the year before, it goes a little bit up from that person. So whatever the number three draft pick got last year, his contract is basically slotted to be what it is. So whoever goes number three. Is that every position that you're drafted in? That's every position. That's every pick in the first round. So no matter what, it doesn't matter if a quarterback goes one or a running back goes one or a D tackle goes one, they're slotted to get that number. And number two, number three, number four, number five, all the way to 32.

7:47James Harrison:So whatever the draft pick was before you, that's why same thing. When I got drafted at seven, Darius... That's different, Drew. They had no rules. They had no nothing then, dude. No, no, no. It was basically, though, I'm telling you, the way did the contract go, it was the same thing, though. Whoever was the draft pick before you, it was the year before you. Oh, yeah. People get the same thing as they got, just a little bit more. Yeah, that's when they didn't have a... But now this year, though, but not this year, but now this draft is more, it's slotted. so you know exactly what their deal is going to be.

8:19James Harrison:One through 32. That's wild. Yeah, so that's why they're still looking at it now. Like, if you draft a running back at those picks in the top, they're automatically slated to get what they get. So they're like, if you get a quarterback tackle, they're looking at it. It instantly makes them the highest paid, one of the highest paid running backs. But then it's good for them. So it's fully guaranteed in the first round is what you're saying? Yes, sir. Yes, sir. Yes, sir. So all first rounds are fully guaranteed? All first round picks are fully guaranteed. Okay. Yes. Okay. The first four years are fully guaranteed and they get a fifth year option.

8:53James Harrison:And that's why the first round picks you get four years fully guaranteed. And then that fifth year option kicks up to how it is with our man, 20 million. Right. You know what I'm saying? So then when you get the second round picks, they like it more because if you get a second round, then you don't have that option. You normally get a four year deal. So you're to the table. You know what I'm saying? Then you ball out after three, then you're free after four. Or they can, you know what I'm saying, tag you, whatever. But the first round is get that extra year, that fifth year option, which keeps them, you know what I'm saying, like they can pick if they want to pay you or if you're doing good or not.

9:26James Harrison:But when you get to that early second round, it's like, might as well go second because I can get to the table faster. Yeah, see, I don't know nothing about that, you know what I'm saying? I don't know. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But look, the Cardinals talking about drafting my man at three. I just always every time I see the Cardinals and I just think about back to when they drafted Josh Rosen at number 7 and Josh Allen went number 10 in 2018 draft Josh Rosen 7th overall they wanted to be talking about all these quarterbacks oh no he's going to be great yeah yeah how about that one how about everybody skip Lamar all the way to 32 get out of here Get out of here Okay Speaking of Lamar Let's go over here To the Ravens Wide receiver Zay Flowers Man he said hardball Was making Making practice Making practice too hard It was you know It was causing injuries You know We got the sound Yeah Tackling down there Can you practice?

10:33James Harrison:Y 'all was tackling the practice? Bro we full pads Nah Nah I'm be real I ain't with that. NFL PA on the line. However many parties, parties you can get, oh, you're getting them. Every single one. 100%. Jesus. Bro, we doing one-on-ones week 17. What? Yeah. Hey, I ain't gonna lie. Right, right, right. Why my anchor hurts? Week 17, we doing one-on-ones. Everybody out there, we tired. You still going. Physically, your body, like, how you manage that, though? You know what I'm saying? Don't. That was low-key. That was a lot of, we had a lot of injuries. Injuries, yeah. Because how we practiced, how we went.

11:11James Harrison:Yeah, but I talked to the new coach. He worked with Harbaugh in 2017, so he know how it was. He know how we worked with Harbaugh. So he's like, you're going to get your work, but it's going to be a little bit easier on your body. You're going to be fresher for the game. So that was the first talk I had with him. Like, hey, how practice is going to look. No, that's good. Real right. On Friday, we run it all week. Then Saturday, Friday, Friday, Saturday, I'm like, damn, my legs. You still, you still shot. Yeah. Now my legs pick up, my legs start to recover on Saturday.

11:47Joe. What's up, D-Bo? What you got to say about that? No, no, bro, you first. You first. Okay, okay. Look here, bro. All right. He's talking about the numbers of practices and all this other stuff. But, again, our ball is not going outside of what the NFLPA standard was that allowed him. Here's the issue. Here's the issue. I don't even know if it's an issue. It's an issue. It's an issue. It's an issue. He's not going above the standard. It's fully padded practices. It is what it is. But I'd be willing to bet my life savings that if you go to, they locked us out in 2010. Okay, they locked us out in 2010 and it was a new thing.

12:39So if you go from 2000 to 2010, I guarantee you the soft tissue injuries stayed about the same. Now you go 2011 to, when was the last one, 20? You go 2011 to 20, I guarantee it's another huge bump in soft tissue injuries. And this is why. Because guys aren't getting the time that they need on the practice field in preseason to get the wear and build up stamina as far as usage, fatigue of usage, and build all that up. And they're getting the soft tissue injuries because of it. Because most of these cats, as you – Joe, I know where you work out. You know where I work out. We may work out together at the same place.

13:37Everybody know where everybody work out. And they're looking at the dude that they're working out with. And when preseason come and you see him pull his hamstring or his quad, you're not surprised because you know what type of work he wasn't putting in in the offseason. You see what I'm saying? And that's the problem. The coaches, I know players, like when I started playing, them boys come in there and they use preseason as the course to build up to get into shape for the season because we was practicing twice a day, full pads, all that. Yeah. Like all that stuff. And now, because of the generation that they have now, they worried about the head stuff.

14:15I understand that. But you're taking away the actual impact of being able to go out there and get that build up, build up that. Dude, the first time I ever played a game of three quarters my rookie year, I'll never forget it. It was against Detroit, bro. And I had to do special teams, and I played like three quarters starting, dude. The next day, I could not walk, dude. I couldn't get out of bed. I had to call my daddy. He was like, yo, man, I don't even know what this fuck me, man. I can't even get up out of bed, man. That man, if Coward hadn't gave us the day off, bro, it'd have been over with.

14:43I was in training camp, bro, for 37 days. 30, 32 to 37 days, dude. Yeah. St. Vincent's, bro. Mm-hmm. Tour days. You know what our tour days was, bro? Full pads, okay? Full pads, tackle to the ground, bro. Yeah. Like, tackle to the ground. The morning, we had a shells practice, bro. Shells practice was still all of your shoulder pads. You just could wear shorts, and it was thud. You didn't go to the ground. Mm-hmm. That was the only difference, dude. But now these dudes don't know what it is to actually have to do the things necessary to get your body ready for the rigors of what it's going to take for you to go into week one and not come out with a soft tissue injury.

15:24I'd be willing to bet my life savings if you go from 2000 whatever 10 11 to whatever it is now 40 50 60 maybe more percent in soft tissue injuries because guys aren't putting in that work. Debo, I'm going to have to say that I stand with you on this message.

15:47James Harrison:And this is what I think it really comes down to, too. That work that you got to put in, there's no type of work like that real football work. And when you're talking about two-a-days and you're talking about that, that's what I remember we had in Florida. When I was in Florida, we were out there, full contact, tackling. And that got you ready for the season. When he say the games were easy, they really. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what y 'all say. Yep, that's me, Clifford Taylor IV. You might have seen the skits, the reactions, my journey from basketball to college football, or my career in sports media.

16:23James Harrison:Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined. And now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show. There's two golden rules that any man should live by. Rule one, never mess with a country girl. You play stupid games, you get stupid prizes. And rule two, never mess with her friends either. We always say that, trust your girlfriends. I'm Anna Sinfield. And in this new season of The Girlfriends... Oh my God, this is the same man.

18:17James Harrison:A group of women discover they've all dated the same prolific con artist. I felt like I got hit by a truck. I thought, how could this happen to me? The cops didn't seem to care. So they take matters into their own hands. I said, oh, hell no. I vowed I will be his last target. He's going to get what he deserves.

18:39James Harrison:Listen to The Girlfriends. Trust me, babe. on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

18:51James Harrison:What's up, everyone? I'm Ako Wodum. My next guest you know from Step Brothers, Anchorman, Saturday Night Live, and the Big Money Players Network. It's Will Ferrell. My dad gave me the best advice ever. I went and had lunch with him one day, and I was like, and dad I think I want to really give this a shot I don't know what that means but I just know the groundlings I'm working my way up through and I know it's a place they come look for up and coming talent he said if it was based solely on talent I wouldn't worry about you which is really sweet he goes but there's so much luck involved and he's like just give it a shot he goes but if you ever reach a point where you're banging your head against the wall and it doesn't feel fun anymore it's okay to quit if you saw it written down It would not be on a calendar of, you know, the cat.

19:46James Harrison:Just hang in there. Yeah, it would not be. Right, it wouldn't be that. There's a lot of luck. Listen to Thanks Dad on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I'm John Green. You may know me as the author of The Fault in Our Stars, and now I guess also as the co-host of The Away End, a brand new world soccer podcast. I'm Daniel Alarcon, a writer and journalist, and John and I have known each other since we were kids. My first World Cup was Mexico 86. I was nine years old. I watched every game and I fell in love. On our new podcast, The Away End, we'll share with you the magic of international football, all leading up to the 2026 World Cup.

20:24James Harrison:For us, soccer... Football... Is a story we've shared for over 30 years, since Daniel was the star player on our high school soccer team. Very debatable. and I was their most loyal and sometimes only fan. I love this game. I love its history, its hope, its heartbreak, and above all, its beauty. Together, we'll find out why, of all the unimportant things, football, soccer is the most important. Listen to The Away End with Daniel Alarcon and John Green on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. We really are, because practice, you're really tackling. You're really doing angle tackle drills.

21:05James Harrison:You're really buttoning up. You're really thudding. You're really doing the real physical wear and tear against these dudes, the one-on-ones, all of that stuff that gets you ready to make these movements during the season. Football is so reactive that, too, when you get another man on you and you get the leaning and rocking, you can't practice that unless you go full speed and put your body on another man's body. No homo, but unless you really get active, then you're not going to be able to understand it until you get to the game. So the training camp and the tackling and the real stuff like that, that's something that we did.

21:41James Harrison:And that's what really sharpened your iron and really got you ready because you're going against the best. When I was at Florida, I'm tackling Percy Harvin. He's going to make me look crazy. You know what I'm saying? You get to the point where, okay, once the season happens, you start relaxing, taking care of your body a little bit because you work so hard that now you're maintaining. You're still doing your things, but like you don't have to really go as hard during the season because you went and built your body so hard that now, oh, now I maintain, I'm ready for all of this. I think it comes to a point, too, where younger guys in the league, when I first came, you become a vet too fast.

22:18James Harrison:You're not a vet. Hey, it's giving. Nobody. First round, second round here. You first round, second round. You're getting welcome. No, I did every special teams. I was a 7th pick. So when you're saying that you play special teams, I understand. Because Coach Mangini— Bro, I started my first three years, 2007, 8, and 9, playing still, kickoff, and punt. Yeah, brother, brother. I was the first-round pick, and I played all four phases the entire game because that's what Brooks did. Eric Mangini came from the Bill Belichick era, where my first meeting in there, I'm coming in there with respect. I think people come in already just expecting too much.

22:56James Harrison:You know what I'm saying? Like, they're supposed to be giving. No, you got to come in this thing. You got to earn your stripes. And the earlier that you become a starter and now you become a little this, then you're getting days off. Now you're feeling more entitled than you really are. There's no entitlement. I think the earlier is just everybody's grinding until you're year 10. You're 35, 33 years old. And now, you know what I'm saying? You don't have to do that as much because you've done it for 10 years straight. And every single training camp, you came in here, battled, hit, got your stuff right.

23:28James Harrison:So now, okay, you might get a vet day. You know what I'm saying? And that's deservedly so. It's too many early vet days. It's too many, now you've been in the league three years, you're starting. Okay, now you're a vet. You're not a vet. You're not a vet. There's no, it's only after around eight to ten years in the league for real is when I'm like, listen, you legitimately are a vet. You know what I'm saying? Like that's where you can get those days. But that before. I don't like days. I don't need no days. No, no, no. Not even days, but it's just, if there were to ever be a day. over 10 years is where there could ever be a time where now, all right, I can see it.

24:02James Harrison:So it's just too, it's just you not, we got to play football to get in football shape. And I think people don't look at that as much and they're like, nah, I'm taking care of myself. Groins, you know, all, all, all those soft tissue and impact injuries. You can't, you can't, you can't do nothing about, because that's just forced put on something that you can't, But you're talking about soft tissue where it's exertion of force. And most of the time it's what muscle weakness or imbalance of. So still it's the same thing. Muscle weakness. Now you're telling me, hey, I know we ain't do nothing with you.

24:43We set y 'all out, man. We ain't want y 'all. We kept y 'all fresh, man. We only had y 'all do 10 plays a day. And now you did 30 plays, 40 plays over the whole week. and now we're telling you go out here, give me 65 of them at 100%. And you wonder why you pull a hamstring quad growing and everything else because you ain't put your body through the rigors to be able to do that because you never gave your body the opportunity to do it. And now you think it's just because, oh, I'm an athlete. You know, I did it last year and I managed to make it. No, each year it gets harder to do. It takes longer.

25:13The hardest thing to do is to get into shape. So what you do, don't get out of shape. Stay in shape. Stay in shape. How do you do that? They don't know how to do that no more. They're too busy. Like, as soon as it's done, man, most cats don't even want to work out in no way. Man, can't cool. You know? They want to vacate. They just trying to live their life, have their style, all that other stuff. No. It's work that come with that. Can't cool. That's why I average the career, what, three and a half years? Three and a half, man. Okay. Okay. What you get, Joe? What you get, Joe? I got 12. 12? I got 12 new things.

25:44Joe putting in that work. What you get, D-Bow? I got 15. God! Be more careful. I got 15. Come on, man. It looked like you could still play. Hey, listen, that's all I'm going for is to look. That's what I'm saying. I ain't even lie, bro. I'm like, man, you know, maybe I could go out there, man. I could still fit my stuff. So I'm out there with my son. Went up to whatever it was, Friday. And I'm like, man, I'm watching the practice. I'm like, man, let me get down here and see what I could do, man. He's like, I'm like, let me get out there. He's like, no, let's just do it right here. I'm like, all right, come on, let's drop down.

26:18Man, I went to take a step, like, just to react. I said, uh-uh. Ain't about to have me blow something up out here, bro. Yeah, D-Bo. It was not even perfect, bro.

26:26James Harrison:No. Too old for this shit, man. No. Hey, I felt my ACL, MCL, PCL, CCL, ECL, LCL. I felt everything about to go, bro. Nope, nope, nope. Nope. See? No, no. You got to warm up. It's going to take you a good 30 minutes. Bro, it ain't even that. Just, okay, me knowing where I'm going is different than me having to react. to where they're going. So what you was doing, you was guarding them? I made like I was going to guard him off the line. They was doing like a jam drill. Oh, yeah, you were tripping. Yeah, bro. I was tripping. I was tripping. Listen, I went to, I said, ooh. Debo, you got to tell him to guard you.

27:08Bruh, I don't even know. Then you could at least know. If he mess around and jam me and I got to sit my leg down too fast, I might mess up and prop my meniscus or something. Bro, your son jam you off the line? Okay, I feel you. Don't let him do that. That's even worse. No. No, brother. According to Adam Scheffner, man, how he get all this stuff? He said A.J. Brown likely to be traded to the Patriots after the June 1st deadline. Let's see. He said no matter what happens at this week's draft, A.J. Brown trade to the Patriots is still on the table and still tracking to happen on or after June 1st per league sources.

27:50He wrote, two sides have discussed a deal, but neither has been willing to commit to it until after June 1, where, when, Brown's$40 million salary cap charge will be split between this and next year. All the elements remain in place to make it happen, and Brown to the Patriots is still the likely outcome. Just not during this week's draft. Perth's source put the trade on hold just for now, but things will soon quickly warm back up. The Eagles remain open to trading Brown. The Prefiers remain highly interested in acquiring the star receiver, and conversations are expected to resume shortly on or before June 1st, probably accumulating in a deal.

28:43According to Scheffner, he also added the Patriots remain at the forefront of trade talks for Brown. Any team could always emerge, and there's a lot of time between now and June 1st. But as for now, multiple sources say they believe Brown and the Patriots are likely to become a tandem. Joe Yo Why they got so much confidence in it I already know why I mean

29:15James Harrison:Do you tell me It's that It's that handshake deal Man It's that handshake deal You know he was over there With your boy Head coach What's his name He was little Remember when they traded him They showed him when they traded him He was little He had to get up and walk it off When they traded him From Tennessee um I can't think no yeah AJ when they checked he was a Tennessee a person yes they traded him to Philly but at that time the coach was um Vrabel Vrabel yeah hey well yeah okay because obviously if they're doing this Vrabel Vrabel is smart for the Patriots they need a receiver they obviously are on the way they got Drake May they made it really far with him and he's trying to help his quarterback out so I mean need a little bit of line but also when you got a receiver that's always good to be able to throw it up to a number one they didn't have one so I mean great move for the uh for the Patriots and yeah I mean I don't I mean I think the reason like nobody else is really interested is because of how you know they had their dealings I guess in public with you know how he was upset about how things were going or weren't going over in Philly.

30:32So, I mean, I'm assuming that if Raybo, obviously, they may have a better rapport of communication that he feels like that's not something that would happen. I think that would be the only thing that would really slow somebody down from going after him. That's the only thing that I would think why no other teams are really in the fray to do it right now. Because you're on the sideline, thing with the books out? No, not the books, man. He was talking about how they ain't using him enough. He was complaining, you know, through the course of the season. I say, why do you think other teams haven't been trying to?

31:10That's why I said it, because of how A.J. was complaining about the season and complaining about, you know, not getting the ball and all that other stuff. So, I think that may have been part of the reason. But, Joe, the next year, Lawrence, he said he about to try and get that 9-7. there's been questions. There has been questions. I want to get it. He said, I know Stewart. He had it last year and has it right now, but I'm going to speak to him and see what he wants to do. Joe, how much you go ahead to pay for that, man?

31:49James Harrison:He said he knows Stewart, depending on how much he knows him, how good of a friend he is, you know. Wasn't Stewart the first round pick himself? See? He might, you know, he might. The price done went up. No, Debo. You're not going to do that to him. I mean, look, it depends. It depends. How much does that number really mean to him? What was you willing to pay for a jersey, Joe?

32:16Don't forget, we saw it. We said it. We said it. You said it. I was willing. What did you offer and get turned down?

32:21James Harrison:I was willing to pay. I was willing to pay$100 ,000. Hey, that's where I'm at. That's where I'm at, Joe. See, no way. That's where I'm at. It took me a month to get to 100. And you still got turned down, though? Yeah. See, that's the crazy thing. See, the friendly thing to do, a nice 20 ball. We in the business. Hey, Joe, we in the business. Are they friends or he just knows Stewart has it? He don't say I know you. That's what I'm saying. How many do you know? He says, I know Stewart. He had the number last year. and he has it right now. But I'm going to speak to him and see what he wants to do.

33:04You'll see. Look here, man. We ain't tripping. It depends, man. $100 ,000, man. You just signed for 28. You just got a stints for 28. You know how you feel when you get your numbers up? Why are you trying to hit your teammates

33:21James Harrison:so hard, though? He's just a fresh teammate. He don't even know if he going to be there after this. It depends on the number. I'm a first-round pick, and y 'all just picked up another guy that played the same position as me. I need 100. I don't know if I'm going to be here. I need 100. You got to pay for my moving. You got to pay for my moving and all that. Yeah, okay. I know what y 'all doing. Y 'all trying to get me up out of here. That's actually crazy work. No, you would have paid 100 back then. Look, that was back in the day. Right. That was back in the day when I was pre-CBA. That was our pre-CBA.

33:58James Harrison:This new money, Joe. Man. But look, you see, that's crazy, though. I didn't know what I'm willing to pay. That's just crazy. You're just trying to hit your teammate for all he got. That's your best boy. Listen, all I need to know, hey, listen, this number means something to me, too. It's my rookie year. This is what I came in. I'm a first-round pick. What was Dexter? I think Dexter might have been in first round. Exactly. You just telling me that your first is better than my... Listen, man. All my fans got this 9-7 out here. What you talking about? He might have to change the 98 then. No, I'm going to give it to him.

34:42But, hey, what's it worth to you? You let me know what it's worth to you. Okay. He say 100. I'm going to be like, okay, you got it. You're going to say, okay, okay. You got it. You need six figures. Bruh, I'm trying to tell you. I tell you this right now bro Let me had Come back in I came back 2014 I unretired 2014 I came back I got 92 Right yes I didn't get 92 they gave it to me

35:15James Harrison:Yeah you told me they was just throwing numbers At you no I'm saying when I came Back and unretired I came back from Hell I went to Cincinnati They gave me 92 There yeah the dude that had I don't remember what his name was. Disrespectfully. No, no. I paid him. Oh, what'd you pay? But I didn't really. What'd you pay? No, no, no. But Joe, I didn't. Listen, the number didn't matter to me. What did you pay? Five. Five bands? Mm-hmm. Eight. Okay. I take it back. I might not have paid nothing. I don't think I paid nothing for Cincinnati. No, you paid five bands. In New England, I paid five. Okay, New England, you paid five for 92.

35:53I paid nothing. Yes. Paid nothing in Cincinnati. Nothing. Okay. There was like so-and-so. I think actually Bill, I think Bill talked to me. He was like, yeah, you know, we ain't got 92. Somebody got it. But, you know, you could talk to him and see da-da-da. I'm like, I'll talk to him. I said, if it ain't, you know, I'll take whatever. So my approach going in was already, hey, I'm like, yo, I forgot to do his name. I'm like, yo, what you want for 92, man? Let me know. I mean, if, you know, if it ain't too big, then I go ahead. I get it. But if it's big, I ain't going to lie to you. I ain't attached to no damn number.

36:26going to sell me five racks, I said, here. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what y 'all say.

My dad gave me the best advice ever. I went and had lunch with him one day, and I was like, and dad, I think I want to really give this a shot. I don't know what that means, but I just know the groundlings I'm working my way up through. and I know it's a place that come look for up and coming talent. He said, if it was based solely on talent, I wouldn't worry about you, which is really sweet. Yeah. He goes, but there's so much luck involved.

39:47James Harrison:And he's like, just give it a shot. He goes, but if you ever reach a point where you're banging your head against the wall and it doesn't feel fun anymore, it's okay to quit. If you saw it written down, it would not be an inspiration. It would not be on a calendar of, you know, the cat. Just hang in there. Yeah, it would not be. Right, it wouldn't be that. For us, soccer, football, is a story we've shared for over 30 years since Daniel was the star player on our high school soccer team. Very debatable. And I was their most loyal and sometimes only fan. I love this game. I love its history, its hope, its heartbreak, and above all, its beauty.

41:04James Harrison:Together, we'll find out why, of all the unimportant things, football, soccer is the most important. Listen to The Away End with Daniel Alarcon and John Green on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. You put it out your pocket. That's what I mean. I'm on pocket Joe. 41:58100.

41:59James Harrison:That man, you went in there right, though. Like, yeah, man, you know what I'm saying? Hey. I'm not really attached to it. I went in there the complete opposite way. I need that 23. I need that 23. What you need for it, man? I need it. I want it. I need it bad. They like this, oh, we done caught a duck. I was not attached to no number, man. man, that number wasn't going to make or break me. No, you right. Yeah, brother. Even when I came back to the Steelers, bro, same thing. I don't know how that worked out. They ended up working out some way where I think somebody had it, but he didn't play or something didn't happen, so they just took it from him and gave it to me because they could do that because he didn't, I guess, didn't make the regular roster or whatever it was.

42:45I don't know. So I didn't, like one time it was New England, And that was like, he was just on some, yeah, I ain't tripping, man. Just let me get five for it, whatever. I'm like, all right, cool. And he just went. I think he went to like 94 or 96 or something.

42:59James Harrison:You lucky duck. But that's just it. I wasn't tripping. I would have came in there. I would have put on 16. You know, I would have went back to college on. I feel you. Oh. Did Will Howard just get paid? Man, you know he got paid. You missed that? I did. Bruh, he got like 150, I think 130-something guaranteed. 130-fold guaranteed? Yeah, brother. Yeah. As I was out there playing. As you was out there putting people to sleep. Night-night. I call that man Nightquill. Hey, it was always fun, baby. To put somebody to sleep, Joe, you got to be willing to go to sleep. And I wasn't afraid to go to sleep, Joe.

52:54You was not. I was never afraid to go to sleep. Yep. I had a little bedtime story ready. Hey, always. I could even tell one to myself. Sometimes I did go to sleep. I just woke up faster than they did. Yeah, okay. Hey, tell me what down it is. Third down. Okay, we good. Mm-hmm. Good. Good. Yeah. 54:24James Harrison:going to stop saying NFL jacked up was a thing that we used to look forward to watching people getting put to sleep. And like everybody, when you watch the ball, like the late, great Stuart Scott, what we talking about? He got jacked up. I'm like, dang, that's, that's, you got to be more careful. That's, that's, that's on your quarterback. That's on your quarterback. Got to be more careful. Got to be more careful. Got to be more careful. But I was looking for that.
