In short

Steelers quarterback speculation (Baker Mayfield to Pittsburgh vs. internal options Will Howard and Drew Allar), plus NFL roster/contract talk and Cleveland Browns guard Joel Bitonio’s retirement. Also includes debate about Miles Garrett’s “weather tax” after moving to the Rams, and a separate discussion of Justin Jefferson’s comments about Kyler Murray.

Guests/backgrounds

No named podcast guests in the transcript. The hosts are Deebo and Joe (sports talk voices), with audience superchat callers/comments.

Key claims

  • Mike Florio is cited saying Baker Mayfield would be “perfect” for the Steelers; hosts argue it depends on what the Steelers see from Howard/Allar and on Mayfield’s contract demands.
  • Bitonio retirement is framed as a model of consistency and professionalism; he’s called future Hall of Fame.
  • Garrett is said to lose ~10% of gross pay due to higher California income tax.
  • Justin Jefferson’s praise of Kyler Murray is interpreted as preferring him over the current/previous QB.

Notable examples

  • Steelers QB options: Mason Rudolph, Will Howard, Drew Allar.
  • Bitonio: 12 seasons, 7 Pro Bowls, 5 All-Pros; roomed with Johnny Manziel; learned “egoless” from Nick Chubb.
  • Garrett: $179M (2026-2030) cited; tax-rate comparison Ohio 3.125% vs California 13.3%.

2:54so they say uh baker could baker mayfield be the stillers next quarterback after aaron rogers nfl insider baker mayfield would be perfect for the stillers as he's poised to hit free agency after the 2026 i don't know if he could hit free agency after 2026 because i think he gave them boys until um to win was it um uh training camp i think you got i think you gave them to training client to uh to get a chance to i guess you know get a get a deal done or however where it may be i don't know why we already talking about a quarterback for the stillers next year dude like like we talking about i mean i ain't gonna lie but i would talk about it oh i mean i guess if it was joe burrow you know what i'm saying with joe burrow i would do that but uh mike flores If it's Baker Mayfield United, it's interesting.

3:44I ain't tripping. If it's Mike Florio, dude, he seems to think that, what did he say? He said Baker Mayfield would be perfect in Pittsburgh. He would be perfect. He said, I know they would like to get off of the train of old veteran quarterbacks. Baker ain't that old either, though. But I mean, he's a spring chicken compared to Aaron Rodgers. I would make a beeline, he said, for Baker Mayfield if I'm Mike McCarthy and in Stillers. I get through the season and my options are Will Howard and Drew Aller or Mason Rudolph. I'm doing whatever it takes to get to Baker Mayfield and to get Baker Mayfield in Pittsburgh.

4:30So that's what he thinks. I don't know about that. What are you thinking? Me? I don't know. I would say. Yes. I would say we really have to depend on what true development you saw in your players first. So we don't know. We still have no clue of what Drew or Will can do. Drew just got there. Will was hurt. Like, we had no idea. So if that became to where it was like, okay, it was a toss-up, throw-up in the air if he was going to be able to, or if either one of them was going to be a automatic, I see him as a starter for us next year, then yeah. Now that's going to determine what it is that Baker is looking to get from it.

5:23And assuming what was his last deal? Three year, a hundred million. You know, he's either looking for that right now. He's 29. He's looking for that right now. And if not more, and they're obviously, I guess they're balking on it a little bit and he's he didn't gave him a deadline that they got to get the deal done by training camp so if they don't get that deal done by training camp then he's like ain't no deal to get done and I'm out of here if we are in that I don't know if if he comes wanting you know 35 40 million do we even yeah do we even think about that versus what may be out there and like I said it's a whole bunch of other stuff that got to happen before we even get to that point like where we go be at in the draft you know like what we go be like we already go be last you know what i'm saying because we're about to win the super bowl so you know is it something that we can get done package whatever toss i don't know to get it oh i hate to say this go ahead i don't know why that just went through my head say it

6:33James Harrison:what you thinking D-Bo if the deal can't be done with Lopez I might have to switch him off for a couple first round picks whoa damn I don't even know why I thought of that no no no don't do that listen man I don't even know why I did it he's no he's homegrown we can't do nothing I'm just telling you what went through my head that was all okay I'm glad you told me I was trying to get a quarterback in the first day on the first pick and I know that went in one ear and out the other damn that went GM thoughts man they just float through your head crazy something you know what I'm saying nah this is what I'm saying we're going to run this year we got to sign we got to sign that point blank period point blank period this Baker Mayfield thing I just don't see that happening, especially with us having two guys that like Mason Rudolph.

7:38I don't think he's going to be there, so I don't even think that's a name that really should have been thrown into it. But like until we actually know and have a greater understanding of what Will and Drew can do, So I think we, you know, we jumped to conclusions way too fast about jumping over and giving, you know, Baker Mayfield. He needs to be the quarterback now. Joe Burrow, yeah, I'm going to stumble and trip and fall on my face. Yeah. But, I mean, Baker's good. I ain't got nothing against him, but it's just depending on, you know, what it is he's looking for, what he wants, you know. He want to come over here with, like, you know, Aaron Rodgers number.

8:18He want to go 25, maybe up to 27 or something like that, possibly even 30, depending on how he'd go for a year or two.

8:27James Harrison:He had 33 right now. And I could see, all right, that might work. But, you know, definitely after the end of the year, we got to – if he don't get signed, we got to kick the tires and just see what he's talking about. You know what I'm saying? Yeah. Are we keeping our eyes wide open? We're keeping our options open, but we're going to have to know, like you said, we do have two quarterbacks that haven't touched the field, for real, so that we drew Aller and – I mean, Drew Howard and Aller and Drew Aller. So, like, if we have these players and we finish A-Rod, does this whole season, and then he obviously retires, what is McCarthy like?

9:07James Harrison:Who – that's why I'm looking at our team. What is the offensive line? What is our running game? How is our team developed? And then are these two dudes that we have, do we see them looking like, are they better than potentially Baker Mayfield? And I'm not knocking Baker like you said. Solid option. I'm not mad at him at all. If we had Baker on our team without Aaron Rodgers, I would be happy with that. But we're trying to figure out moving forward, what are all the options? Let's lay all the chips on the table. Because if you're saying if it's Joe Burrow, I'm running over everything. I don't care who else was on our roster.

9:38James Harrison:You make complete sense. We're going to go get him when we need him. but with what we got going on now if Joe Burrow's not there we can sit there chill is Drew is the other guy what does it look like we can take our time yeah for sure for sure hey Joe man we got some we got some news we got some news over here in Cleveland Brown seven time pro bowler five time all pro guard you know who he is Joe

10:08Pantonio Pantonio shout out to Joe Antonio is retired from NFL 12 seasons Joe um hey yes remember that great offensive line Joe yep y 'all shored up what happened

10:28James Harrison:oh we had to go get we we were kind of it make me feel so good no because I wanted to get Joe we didn't want to just get to we got we had to get lineman to replace my man Joe because Joe great player 12 years in the league seven Pro Bowls five all pros the model of consistency he had was the first he passed Joe Thomas and snaps you know I'm saying so just when I was there when you got players like Joe Pantonio seven Pro Bowls when you were just coming in there doing what you got to do every single day work pair with the captain of the team for a bunch of years and like Debo you always laugh but when you don't have success and then you have players like Joe that come in and do exactly what a team, what a coach, what a GM, what a championship team needs, what a championship teams are looking for, I always just admire that.

11:22James Harrison:So when I played, I played with Joe. I played with Joe Thomas. And those dudes, when he came in his rookie year, he was right next to Joe T and was able to play for such a long time and just a model level of consistency. He didn't say too much, but the dudes came in there. You know, those offensive linemen, they just grown men. They don't do nothing flashy. He had a truck. He chilled. He didn't say nothing. He had his wife. He had his family. And it just was Joe. He just smooth. You knew he was about business. It wasn't no, it was a joke around with you and stuff. But end of the day, Joe's coming in here to do his job.

11:53James Harrison:He got a job to do. If you ask him what's going on, he knows exactly what to do. He's never not on time. He's always professional, always just carried himself at a very high character. So when you see dudes in the league just moving around and you just see grown men on your team that you respect and you know that they did it the right way love him and he he deserves everything that he gets so i think he's a future hall of fame honestly so it was him and joe t those two dudes and alex smith alex mac i had like legitimate offensive lineman that we played for the browns that just were work pail dudes lunch lunch work pails just came in there did their jobs every actually we have uh we have what he said at his retirement press conference listen and Joe.

12:34Played guard in the NFL. I was drafted the same year as Johnny Manziel, and we actually roomed together. I learned some things not to do from him. I got the opportunity to play with and learn from so many guys. I learned how to be egoless from Nick Chubb. I learned to always smile like Christian Kirksey. I learned to Chief Slam from David Njoku. I learned how to be fiery and competitive from Baker. Uh-oh. Uh-oh. Uh-oh. Fire. Competitive. Sound like a good dude, man. Really good dude, D-Bo. Really good dude. I ain't sad. He gone. I'm happy. Great. Good job. Tire. Had your life. Living your life, man.

13:21James Harrison:Did a great job. You know who he remind me of, bro, that played for the Steelers? Was it Dave? I knew you was about to say DeCastro. DeCastro. Yep. He reminded me of the Castro, brother. I was about to say that, too. I should have said it. Like, literally, they the same dude. Grown man. Coming in that joint, doing his job to the best of his ability. Like, all pro. You know what I'm saying? Just coming in. I'm like, he makes it look easier than everybody else. He's just chilling, like, getting the job done. Right in the spots. The steps and everything. So, when I came there, I'm like, this thing remind me of Joe.

13:55James Harrison:Like, the Castro was the same. So, super similar dude. Yeah. Hey, bro. So, your boy is Miles Garrett. I guess he really meant what he said. So by not getting a raise, Miles Garrett would be taking a pay cut in California. So the Browns owed Garrett one hundred seventy nine million from twenty twenty six through twenty thirty. The Rams owe Garrett the same hundred seventy nine million from twenty six through thirty. Now, given the significant difference in state income tax rate between Ohio and California, 3.125 % versus 13.3%, Garrett will lose 10 % of his gross pay that he would have had in Cleveland.

14:46He now loses that because he went over there to L.A. Hey, look here, man. I'm trying to tell you, man. Look here, man. hey man i thought he was bullfraggle rocking the man meant what he said last year when he said he want to win he went on he could have told them people hey man bump this up to uh get that disparity out of there you know when i come over there i need that 10 back but he didn't he said hey i'm over here i want to win i'm willing to lose 10 of my money i'm gonna pay 10 to come over here and win. Joe, hey, he meant what he said, Joe. Joe, would you go? Yes. I know you would.

15:28James Harrison:I lived in LA. At the end of the day, Debo, I hear you. I call it the weather tax. Joe, I understand what you're saying, but that weather... It's beautiful out there. So I hear him what's saying. So you're telling me, you're telling me that... Listen, Joe, you're telling me that weather's tax is worth 17.9 of you. 17. Hello? Honestly? That's 10 % of 17.9. What do you want me to do? If I'm going to LA and I'm making the 40 million, it's getting taxed more. It's getting taxed. That's what's going to happen. But all I know is my portion, that's still going to be fine. That's still going to be fine.

16:11James Harrison:I'm going to be in LA. I'm going to be out here in the beautiful weather every single day. I'm going to wake up to... Hey, it's Ryan Seacrest for Jewel Osco. Ready to save? We host Do You Need a Ride, the mobile comedy podcast that answers the question, what does it sound like when we drive our comedian friends around the wild streets of Los Angeles? Yes, every week we pick up a hilarious guest, maybe run some errands, share some laughs, and our dreams. Like when Martha Kelly shared her career pivot. I want to become an influencer of divorced moms whose kids have gone off to college who have decided they're going to start living life for themselves. Or the time Baron Vaughn got distracted by the majestic scenery. Then there's a freaking deer right there on the side of the road.

20:23James Harrison:You're welcome. Do whatever I want to go do. Beautiful sunshine. I'm going to go out here and win Super Bowls with Matthew Stafford. I'm going to be coached by Sean McVay. And guess what? I'm going to run up the bag again. So, like, Miles isn't really, like, the most flashy dude. Like you said, I understand. That's a lot of money. 17.9. That's crazy. You're not telling your agent. You've got to make up for that. Over the four, five years of the contract. I understand. But what you just not – so all of the players that go to LA, though, like, you just – I understand. That's just what it is. You're going to get taxed because you're in the state of California.

20:57James Harrison:so you can't they not paying no more I mean it's it's weather tax he's going over there he's about to go win some shit and that's just I'm not gonna lie I'm not if I'm going to California and I'm gonna go out there and play with them and I'm making that 40 and I'm hearing what you're saying with the taxes a thousand percent I'm gonna be sick but give me mines let's go win this shit so you go out there and I'm gonna go run another one are you happy then? i'm still outside um you're not gonna like what i gotta say i love i'm gonna be working for it i'm gonna be grinding i hope we're gonna go gonna go get it i'm still on the team next season i'm still getting another 40 after then i did i'm gonna get taxed again i'm getting taxed everywhere you can't help the taxes so i could try to do get some get some write-offs do all that stuff get a good tax crew the hell with that you can't get away from that we gotta figure out a way to on another go buy them $500 ,000 tickets and then go write that off and get some tax write offs they taking it now Joe when you get paid as a W2 you trying to get shit back not write it off

22:14well

22:14James Harrison:all I know is this Miles is fine and if I was out there I would be thinking in the same. I'm going to be fine. Joe. Joe. At 10%. I ain't gonna lie. They gotta make it up. So with Matthew Stafford, with Matthew Stafford, should he just get a like... Should he be asking the Rams for more because they're getting taxed more than when he was in Detroit? Yes. He should make sure he get that percentage on top. Yes, of course. Who wouldn't? Yes. They traded him over there, right? okay yes yes this trade when you trade me son hey you think i'm coming here just to no you go give me that 10 on top right now la i don't give a damn about la you joe you for 18 million dollars joe

23:15James Harrison:you okay okay debo you're i'm i'm going to go play in la with my same deal go out there and ball out and be chilling hope like it's what was it you said 17 million dollars 17.9 it's 179 million 10 % of that another 4 million 17.9 that's another 4 million a year so instead of making 40 million dollars a year it's 36 million dollars a year stop trying to break down the year and look at the total I hear you with the total now don't forget they gonna tax you on some other stuff too so you gonna be paying more than that they got a neighborhood tax They got a mansion tax. Bro, they got traffic tax over there.

24:07They got road tax for driving on the road.

24:11James Harrison:But guess what? The man got the bag. Okay, he got the bag, and he about to be paying$20 a gallon.

24:23James Harrison:I love L.A. I don't. I don't. I can't go there for no longer than one day, Joe. years. Because after that one day, I'm in debt. I got to get home and work for the next two months to get out. See, there you go. Why you got to do so much? You could just ride around. Window shopper. The gas is going to kill me. I ain't buying nothing, Joe. I got to sleep somewhere. You want me to sleep on the streets? No, Deebo. I got a crib. See, I had a crib. You could have kind of stayed at the crib. I didn't know you then. There you didn't. See, I would have had You live in LA. I still ain't got them shoes you was talking about back in 2017.

25:06James Harrison:I did end up getting you some shoes. I did get you some shoes. You got them. I got you some shoes. I got everybody's shoes. I did. See, don't be lying. Don't be lying. Where the shoes at, Joe? I don't know. You got them. I gave them to everybody. I wasn't there. You came out for Christmas? I wasn't there. I was in New England. See? See? Okay. See? Okay. You're right then. Y 'all kicked out the playoffs and I was going to the Super Bowl.

25:46James Harrison:Hey, at least they had Jays, though. At least everybody had Jays, though. Everybody had their Jays, though. On the way to the airport, everybody had their Jays. listen bro hey what's up Kyler Murray man JJ are competing for the quarterback for the Vikings quarterback job so Kyler Murray he on a one year deal McCarthy is entering his third year and Justin Jefferson dude he had some high words to say about McCarthy he said He understands the game. He understands the defense. He understands just how to put touch on the ball just enough to where it gets to where it's got to go without making it difficult for us.

26:37So he understands the game a lot more just because he's been in the game for a couple years now. Am I mic still working? Did I mess it up? Yeah, you're good. So he kind of throws the ball before you even get out of that break. Throws you open for sure. He's a smart guy. He's a competitor just like me. Joe. Joe. Yes, sir. Yeah. Hey, what you hear? You know me because you know me. I always read between lines, Joe. What you hear, Joe? Tell me what that sound like to you, Joe.

27:17James Harrison:it sounds like he it sounds like he wanted that to be his QB that's what it sounds like to me it sounds like man throwing them open it sounds like he don't know how he hasn't been thrown open too many times before um when you're talking about his throwing them before he comes out of his breaks it just sounds like a vet veteran quarterback when I went when I came over from the Browns to the Steelers and I started but I'm not trying to put Kyler Murray and Ben's at all. But Ben, when you had a quarterback like that, he's throwing the ball to spots where people need to be to the spot. When he's saying throwing people open, if somebody's on you on the top shoulder and you put it to the back shoulder, like just a regular quarterback, you have to play a ball placement and you got to be able to read.

27:59James Harrison:You're looking off the linebacker. You want him to go short so then the dig can open up behind you. So you look down and then you throw it to the dig. So there's like you're manipulating the defenses. You're throwing people open. You're throwing comebacks, when they come out of the break, the ball is already out towards the sideline. So now he just got to throw his hands out, put his feet in. The ball's already here. So I think he's just saying that the vet presence of him putting the ball in places where I don't have the younger quarterbacks waiting. I have to see him open before I throw the ball.

28:29James Harrison:You cannot do that in the National Football League. You have to be able to expect him to be in a spot and throw it time and be able to put it in a spot before the dude gets there. So for me, it sounded like Jefferson is saying that my other man's, the other quarterback, the backup wasn't doing it. And that Colin Murray is showing up some stuff he likes. The backup? You made the man the backup already? I mean, look, the quarterback that we're in competition with, JJ. Oh, you mean the starter from last year? Yeah. You said backup. Yo, listen, I'm reading in between the lines. I'm a man who like to read in between lines because it's not always about the words you say.

29:10It's about the words you don't say. It's not about the things you say. It's about the things you don't say. Okay. Okay. By the things he said and by the things he didn't say, it sound like J.J. might be out there at OTAs doing that same stuff he was doing last year during the season. Because he didn't give any. he's doing this and doing that and you know what JJ is he's actually doing the same thing so it's nope that ain't that ain't sound like it you know Murray's still still youngest for a quarterback with 29 he don't turn 29 to August yeah so and and and Jefferson said you know it'd be nice to have the same quarterback for a couple years this might be the opportunity to say had the same quarterback for a couple years he obviously saying that my quarterback ain't gonna be the same quarterback from last year already.

30:05He's saying that without saying it. It'd be nice to have a same quarterback for a couple years. Well, if he thought it was going to be the same quarterback from last year, it'd be a couple years right now, right? I'm just saying. I'm just saying.

30:21James Harrison:You know what he's saying? He's liking Kyler Murray. That's what he's saying. He's putting the ball. He's throwing him open. Yes, sir. I mean, when he starts saying that and he's not saying that. I mean, maybe the question was, what is Kyler Murray showing us? Maybe he didn't even have to bring up J.J. You know what I'm saying? You don't have to put up one man to put the other one down. You know what I'm saying? Maybe that. But still, he understands the game. He understands the defense. I understand that, but touch on the ball. Don't all good quarterbacks do that? Obviously, this is something that he hasn't been used to seeing.

31:00and he's excited about it. Yeah.

31:04James Harrison:Basically, Debo, I'm just trying to not... He's saying he likes... You trying to not tell the truth?

31:12James Harrison:No, I'm telling the truth. You trying not to read into something? No, I already told... I put my man on the bench almost. Exactly. You know what I'm saying? What you mean? I'm trying to let him know. I'm trying to let him know easily how I think he's going down. Justin Jefferson, best receiver, just kind of made Kyler Murray the starter. So I think you make, JJ, you might go to the bench. No question, brother. Yeah, let's check out these snaps. Let's take out these super chats. Covenant Life. Covenant Life back. Hold up. We got a number on there. Where is that? Y 'all ain't put the number on there.

31:47I'm going to have to go over here to the chat, y 'all. I'm going to have to scroll down right here, baby. We got Covenant Life. $19. She said, y 'all probably don't realize But the joy and laughter you can bring, the joy and laughter you bring can reach people on days they're barely holding it together. Thank you for being more than just athletes and for giving people moments that generally matter. Thank you, Covenant Life.

32:13James Harrison:Thank you, Covenant Life. She's talking about me, my laughter, Joe. They used to see you. No, no, no. My laughter. Covenant Life, tell them who you're talking about. Who? Who? Go ahead. It's going to piss you off, too. She's going to say me. I know she ain't going to say you. It's all good. I know she ain't going to say you. Look here. My last. We got Stillers-LoyalMac. Stillers-LoyalMac. $10. Said the Stillers, should the Stillers trade Mason? Ain't nobody going to trade with Mason Rudolph. Should the Stillers trade Mason? I don't know why I said that. I don't know why I said that a lot. Listen, let me start on.

32:50Should the Stillers trade Mason Rudolph, and will Will Howard be the number? and make Will Howard the number two and Drew Aller the number three? Or are the Steelers trying to trade Heisman? I don't know about trading Heisman. They already said they got a way to work that out. See, I'll be stopping in the middle of stuff and talking. What part of the defense has you the most hyped? So should the Steelers trade Mason Rudolph and make Will Howard the number two and Drew Aller the number three? and are the Steelers trying to trade Highsmith? What part of the defense has you most hyped? So for me, they're not going to trade Mason Rudolph because I don't think we can get anything for him, to be honest.

33:41Who are they going to make? One and two, I think, will depend on who does the best in OTA's training camp and all that. and trading Highsmith is not going to happen because they just paid

33:59Herbert and I feel like he's going to it's going to be a transition over the next couple years where we keep that group and you know like I said after that second year when TJ's guarantee is done I I think he jumps to 40-something else million that last year, and he's going to be 34, 35. I think they release him. You? I'm going with, I don't know about the trade with Mason.

34:30James Harrison:I think Will Howard would probably be two because we got him before Drew. But then, like you said, equal competition, see who's going to be ahead on that spot. Highsmith, no. Keep Highsmith. I don't think we're going to trade him. I think we got, like you said, we got TJ. We got Nick Herbick and we have Highsmith under contract for the next two years. Steelers don't need to get rid of talent that we have. We can still accumulate as much in this with this D-line pressure. Three starting real guys, you know what I'm saying, that can really get it done. And then what part? I'm excited about the secondary because I think with the – I just don't – I think the communication, once we have communication, the body on bodies is – people aren't making plays on us when we're in the right position.

35:14James Harrison:then it's going to be a lot more to see. So I think with the secondary, just being a body on a body, the communication, everybody just being lined up in the right position when the ball is snapped, I think that's what I'm most excited to see. Yes. Yeah, I'm excited to see the defense, period. To see them under a new scheme, see them communicate. Work together. Yes, yes. Coordinated effort where everybody is on the same page. Covenant Live, back again,$19. dollars. Joe, I always speak the nicest things I can when it comes to your true love. Yeah. Them janky ass browns.
