In short
Nightcap Hour 1 discusses (1) the NBA’s ruling on the Clippers’ salary-cap circumvention investigation tied to Kawhi Leonard, (2) why CJ Stroud is expected to delay a Texans contract extension until after the season, and (3) broader implications for competitive integrity and roster-building.
Guests
Chad Ochocinco Johnson (former Bengals WR, Pro Bowler/All-Pro) and ISO Joe Johnson (former NBA All-Star, Hawks). Host is Shannon Sharp (“Nightcap Shannon Sharp”).
Key claims
The Clippers received five first-round picks and a $30M fine; Ballmer, Lawrence Frank, and Jillian Zucker were suspended (Ballmer/ Zucker at least a year; Frank six months). Kawhi faces $700K restitution but no suspension. The hosts argue the punishment is mainly about draft-pick deprivation (team competitiveness for a decade), not the fines. They say Stroud turning down $50M+ annually is smart because his 2023 postseason performance was poor and this season is a “make-or-break” year.
Notable examples
Kawhi/Clippers trade compensation and forfeited picks; comparisons to other teams’ draft outcomes (e.g., Celtics’ Jayson Tatum/Jaylen Brown from consecutive picks). For Stroud: mention David Mills filling in, Texans’ defense, and the “C.J. drought”/turnover issues in playoffs.

7:01Shannon Sharpe:It is a premium VSOP cognac that drinks like an egg so without the price. The best tasting smoothest VSOP cognac on the market. And we have it in two sizes. And just because the smaller size, we didn't skip on the taste. Same great quality, same great taste, the same smoothness. Please, please, Drake, responsibly and stay safe. Well, the big news of the day, it came down. The NBA has ruled Clippers' salary cap circumvention investigation into Kawhi Leonard. The Clippers' penalty is as follows. They take five first-round picks. They issue a$30 million fine to Steve Ballmer. Steve Ballmer, Lawrence Frank, and Jillian Zucker all suspended.
7:38Shannon Sharpe:Well, Zucker and Ballmer suspended at least a year. Jillian suspended without pay. Lawrence Frank suspended six months. Kawhi Leonard penalties are$700 ,000 in restitution for improper benefits. There will be no contact or void or suspension for Kawhi. So in pursuing him, to get Kawhi Leonard, it cost him 10 first-round draft picks, two pick swaps, a two-time MVP in Shea Gilgis-Alexander and Danella Gallinari, who has since retired. So they gave up unprotected picks in 21, 22, top 14 protected in 23, 24 first-round pick unprotected, 26 first-round pick unprotected, and they will forfeit 29, 30, 31, 32, and 33 first-round picks.
8:31Shannon Sharpe:Not to mention, okay, the NBA, the Clippers released a statement that said they vehemently reject the NBA findings and we intend to vigorously challenge these findings and penalties. Per Shams, the NBA ruled it's final. There is no formal appeal or arbitration process available to the Clippers with the league. LA's only outlet is to fight the punishment in court. This is what Kawhi said.
9:21Shannon Sharpe:with a clean slate. I'm trying to figure out why you, hold on, I'm trying to figure out, help me out, Ocho, you and Joe, Joe, we're throwing you, because this is your area of basketball. Why the Clippers, if Kawhi is the accepted responsibility for what happened, what leg did the Clippers have to stand on? Go ahead, Joe. Ooh, Ocho, this is really about competitive integrity. As a former player, bro, there's always recruiting, recruiting and relationship building behind the scenes for us as players. You know, but there has to be a line drawn because the wealthy owners can essentially come in, create this outside compensation to where, you know, it doesn't go against the salary cap.
10:06Shannon Sharpe:This is basically what we're dealing with. This is basically what's transpiring. And I think the punishment is warranted. You know, I mean, you have to come down tough on them. The only thing is the five first-round picks tell me, you know, the NBA wasn't really trying to make an example. Because they – look, they fined Kawhi$700 ,000. Man, it ain't nothing. Hell, they fined the organization, Steve Ballmer,$30 million. Come on, Uncle Ocho. Y 'all know that ain't nothing. Not when you're worth$170 billion. What's$30 million? That ain't – Yeah, that ain't nothing. It's just like them fining Kawhi$700K.
10:44Shannon Sharpe:Hell, that ain't nothing for Kawhi. After you done got 170 million, 200 million probably. Go ahead, Ocho, you wanted to say something.
10:52Joe Johnson:Hey, I'm curious. Obviously, the fines that have happened, the taking away of the first-round picks. Hey, Joe, I heard you say they really weren't trying to hurt the Clippers. You don't think taking away five first-round picks for the foreseeable future, that doesn't hurt them in any way?
11:07Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, I do. I do. I do. I think that's basically what it is. That's the punishment. That is the punishment. That is the punishment. with the salary cap, you know, taking away that. That'll set you back here five, seven, even a decade, bro. That'll set you back a decade taking away them picks. So, yeah, I think that's the real punishment behind it because the money that those guys are being fired for, come on, man, that ain't nothing. Steve Palmer earns$300 million in dividends from Microsoft stock every quarter. So he makes, just on his stocks, that's$1.2 billion. What 30 million? It takes him less than 10 days to cover that.
11:45Shannon Sharpe:10 days.
11:50Shannon Sharpe:With that being said, let me tell you why they nicked him, they didn't gash him. Because if you wanted to gash him, you take 27, 28, 29, 30, 31. You don't wait to 29. If I want to punish you, I'm not going to wait three years to put you in jail. I'm going to put your ass in jail immediately.
12:11Joe Johnson:Right. Right. So what he's doing, right? What he's doing, right? Is he giving them time to get their affairs in order, get the team together in the next three years before this punishment starts in place?
12:25Shannon Sharpe:Well, see, I guess a barman of punishment happens immediately. They have to be away from the team. They have no contact with the team. Lawrence Frank is going to be away from the team for six months. Jillian, what's her name? I'll make sure I get her name right.
12:42Shannon Sharpe:Jillian Zucker. She has to be. She's suspended without pay. The problem is that it was reported that once the Toronto Raptors and the Lakers came forward with these allegations that someone in Kawhi's inner circle, mainly it's being reported that it was his uncle, Uncle Dennis, came forward, it was required. They put a rule in that if anybody came and solicited anything, outside of the salary cap to circumvent the cap, it had to be reported. So clearly they took it serious, even though they tried to play it down. The likelihood of the Lakers, because when people said that something had to be fishy, everybody said Toronto and the Lakers had sour grace because they lost out on Kawhi.
13:31Shannon Sharpe:Well, they lost on Kawhi because they wouldn't accuess what's being reported. If what's in this report, and shout out to Pablo Torre, because everybody tried to beat Pablo up. They tried to discredit the man at every chance they get. They probably, probably threatened him with lawsuits and defamation and all that. But he was undeterred. He got this from a whistleblower. Somebody within, I believe somebody within that, I don't know, I don't have any direct knowledge, but I believe somebody from those two organizations, that whatever, the Grass Company and the Daktronic, I believe they blew a whistle.
14:05Shannon Sharpe:I believe they came forward and gave Pablo this information. That's what I believe. I don't know. I don't have any. that is my best guess because how else would probably get these documents
14:17Joe Johnson:so Uncle Joe obviously with Ballman being suspended for a year not allowed to be around the team anything that includes games and all he has to stay away from the facility
14:26Shannon Sharpe:you ain't going to see it you ain't going to see nothing to add on Joe for a year hey let me get that seat yeah hey I got a question for y 'all as a player, how much responsibility should Kawhi have if his representatives were negotiating these arrangements?
14:46Joe Johnson:But he greenlights everything, yo. Oh, okay. That's what I'm trying to say, man. Anybody that represents you,
14:56Shannon Sharpe:you get the final say. Oh, Joe, you ever had something in your contract? You ever had something in your contract you didn't know about? But you got an incentive? Like, man, I didn't even know I had an incentive for$100 ,000, $500 ,000 if I made the Pro Bowl. I didn't know if I had 55, 70 catches, I'd get an extra$200 ,000. You know everything. It was reported. People were talking about it. The moment it happened with Toronto, and then the moment it happened with the Lakers, people were talking about it. Of all the things they can make up, why are they talking about Uncle Danny's talking about he want equity on the team?
15:28Shannon Sharpe:He wanted private jet. He wanted potentially Kawhi to have a no-show millions and millions of dollars. People didn't just make, of all the things they could have made up, that's what they made up. Two different organizations said the exact same thing.
15:44Joe Johnson:Hold up. Equity in the team. That's what he said. He wanted equity in the Lakers, yes.
15:49Shannon Sharpe:They were dead ass? You see those shows? I guess, first of all, why would I let Kawhi build my team, Joe? He didn't build a team in Toronto. He didn't build a team in San Antonio. Now I'm going to trust him to say, well, I'm going to get Paul George. An Andrew Paul George? Because, hey, he win. Kawhi, they felt it was worth it. Hey, they gamble, man, just like a lot of other teams do. They gamble and miss. Hey, you got to take a gamble. If you want to go out there and win, you want to pull the big fish, hey, man, sometimes you got to gamble. You got to try to make the playing field uneven. To y 'all, here's what I'm going to ask.
16:28Shannon Sharpe:If I'm an owner, Uncle Ocho, how many other teams have done a softer version of this? You know what I'm saying?
16:35Joe Johnson:Wait, wait, wait a minute, Joe. You have to think now. How many players are good enough or on Kawhi's level to be able to pull this off with other teams?
16:42Shannon Sharpe:Basically the guys that get the Supermax?
16:44Joe Johnson:It's only so many players that's in that top tier that can pull this off. Anybody that's eligible for the Supermax can get this done.
16:53Shannon Sharpe:Hey, hey, listen. All I'm saying is, yeah, you may catch me a couple times, but I'm going to get by you a few times. You know what I'm talking about?
17:01Joe Johnson:Hey, Anki, you heard what you just said? a couple of players that can get to super max can do this but a couple of players that get to super max still can't impact a team the way kawaii does right it's still still a difference but but you have but toronto look i think joe i think i speak for you when you say if kd's healthy toronto's not winning that championship oh no siree no you got first
17:25Shannon Sharpe:ballot hall of famer and tim duncan you got a first ballot hall of famer and your coach You got Tony Parker and you got Manu Ginobili. Kawhi never put a team together. You're trusting somebody to do something they've never done. Now, if a guy came that helped put a team together, let's just say for the sake of argument, we're using this as an argument, and people say, well, LeBron has all this safe. Okay, you're going to trust that because look what he did in Cleveland. Look at – he requested Kevin Love. He gave a bigger role to Tristan Thompson. Look at J.R. Smith. He signed off on the J.R. Smith and the Iman Shumpert trade.

17:59Shannon Sharpe:You look at what he was able to do in L.A. Okay, you might want to concede some of that. Steph. Steph had the green light. KD's not coming to Golden State if Steph doesn't green light it. But Kawhi has never built a team, guys. Hey, kind of go against the grain on you. We're 10 first-round picks. It's really against the grain, Joe. It is. but I'm saying coming from Toronto, Kawhi had just won a title. Hell, he was arguably – The team was already built, Joe. Pascal Siakam. What's the other guy? What's the Van Fleet? Kyle Lowry. Yeah, Kyle Lowry. Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, they had a team. They had a team.
18:43Shannon Sharpe:But adding Kawhi put them over the top. Hell, they beat Philly. Obviously, circumstantial, you know, things happen in the finals to where they end up beating the Warriors. But I think he was like the hottest player in the league at the time. hell and the clippers they are and who had just left the east tell the people at home but don't know who just left the east the beast the beast was out of the east oh cho you know when the cats away the mice are play oh cho yeah check this out if kawai have already said that okay look i'm only gonna be here for one year this is a one-year run of hell we win it cool i'm still gone you know he already said wanted to go home so the lakers and the clippers they had to you know gear up and get ready for this so by the time it came to the clippers oh they couldn't lose out on kawaii bro you know they couldn't they couldn't allow him to be in that building playing with lebron and anthony davis no no sir but how could why not know uncle dennis got this penthouse it's important that he got a penthouse on jojo He's like, hey, hey, hey, I'm gonna take the jet.
19:50Shannon Sharpe:What, hold on. You my agent, how you got a jet? That, those are some of the reports that were out, that some of the perks that Uncle Dennis got. Hey, all Uncle Dennis needed, I mean, all Kawhi gotta do is lay low and play slow, man. I don't know what my uncle's back there doing. That's what he did. I don't know. He did say, look, some people in his inner circle, it wasn't but one Kawhi. It wasn't nobody. Hey, look, look, as a matter of fact, as a matter of fact, Uncle Ocho, I'm going to fire his ass too, because he can't be doing that around here. He fired him in June. That should have gave you an indication.
20:26Shannon Sharpe:Hey, if somebody say... He ain't fired his uncle? Yeah! His new agent is Harrison Gaines. If somebody say, hey, one member of the nightcap crew, it ain't but three of us. 24:13Shannon Sharpe:I mean, yeah, man. That is crazy. Yeah, Ocho, it's AA. They playing the game dirty out here. These B-net, because think about it. These teams going to continue to sell and seven plus or however many plus billions and these billionaire owners gonna continue to get into this and you're gonna have things this this is what we're gonna be dealing with bro what we're gonna be dealing with the only thing that's crazy go ahead go ahead hey i'm gonna say
24:44Joe Johnson:uncle joe the way the ruling came down right yeah nothing gold comes into place and nothing starts for another three years correct so except the suspensions oh yeah yeah yeah that that but from a team standpoint every move the clippers make has to be their best move for the next three years come to the draft would have come to getting players in off season now i'm not sure what players want to come play there i mean this doesn't affect them getting players to come play in la i know right well look you traded look think about what you got your best player you traded you got
25:18Shannon Sharpe:draft compensation. I don't know. I think they got a couple of first round picks for Kawhi. You got 27. You got the picks for 27. You got the picks for 27 and 28. Plus you have your own picks if you still have those. The problem is that your best two players Darius Garland and Brandon Ingram they're going to have to play way above their head during the Western Conference guys. We know what the Western Conference represents. I don't know if those two guys are enough. You traded Zubats, you're big. Okay, you got a top five pick, the guy from Illinois. Is that enough for them to be competitive in the East?
25:58Shannon Sharpe:I mean, in the West? Now, maybe they tank. That ain't Ty Ludo. Ty Lue ain't tanking ish. That's why they fired him. They wanted to tank and get top draft compensation. Ty Lue say, oh, hell no. That's on my resume. Y 'all fire me? Y 'all gonna fire me for trying to win. You damn sure ain't gonna find me because i lost a bunch of games right hey and you're right they're gonna need guys to play above their heads bro like you know i'm saying because this gonna put you this gonna set you back you know the talent that they do have right now they're gonna need a couple of them guys to really step up and really play big minutes and be that guy the two guys the two best players what are they injury prone bi is injury prone darius garland is injury prone joe that's That's why Cleveland finally got up off it.
26:52Shannon Sharpe:At some point, hell, you got to figure it out. You got to figure out a way to stay healthy, whether it's training harder in the offseason, but them people going to be counting on you, man. I'm talking about to put up big numbers. And B.I. potentially has the repertoire to do it. Okay, Ocho, he just got to be consistent. You know, I think that's been his major thing, inconsistency. He finds a way to be consistent on a night-to-night basis to where he's playing at an elite all-star caliber level, they may have a chance. I like Garland. He got to stay healthy too. But I understand what you're saying, Unc.
27:24Shannon Sharpe:But, yeah, this is what they got. Yes. And that's the thing. You're banking on guys that have an injury history, a lengthy injury history. This ain't no one time. Remember Darius Garland missed a large chunk of playoffs. Back-to-back C years. B.I. B.I. has been nicked up. No, he dealt with those blood clots also. Those are something that's never, ever going away. Oh, he – hey, hey, hey. Oh, he done got what Gorilla. They straightened out. He done straightened some things out. He got it jumping. They in L.A. He got – you know what I mean? Yeah. He out there working. He got his little – you know what I mean?
28:01Shannon Sharpe:Yeah.
28:02Joe Johnson:Oh, he good. He good. The blood clot. You take a little blood thinning. Boy, hey, you right, huh?
28:06Shannon Sharpe:You can't play with that. But you got to take it all the time.
28:08Joe Johnson:You got to take it all the time.
28:10Shannon Sharpe:And the thing is, Joe, if it makes your blood – your blood don't clot. So now I'll gash you. That's right to bleed. It's serious. My grandmother had to take blood thinners every single day. Ain't miss a day. You can't work out on that stuff. You can't work out when you're on blood thinners. You can't do all that. It's hard. You ain't supposed to be anyway. Man. Like I said, they nicked them. They didn't gash them. Because if you wanted to gash them, you take 27-20. You started immediately. That's normally how punishment starts. You don't normally wait two years to do that some punishment. The criminal justice system doesn't work like that.
28:54Shannon Sharpe:And I understand this is not the criminal justice system, but normally if you want to really deter someone from doing something, you make the punishment swift and you make it harsh. The swiftness of it would have been immediate suspension of the people that suspended, and as soon as they can have draft picks, they gone.
29:11Joe Johnson:So the ones they got for Kawhi from Toronto, they gone? No, no, no. They got those.
29:17Shannon Sharpe:They got those picks in 20 – and they got their own picks in 27 and 28. I remember you're saying – you're saying a swift penalty would have been taking those away. Their own picks from 27, 28. The punishment would have started taking their picks in 27, 28, 29, 30, and 31. Not give them an opportunity to have two drafts. Because, you know, hey, Joe, in two drafts, man, you might be – Ain't no telling what you could get. You might get the two best players in the draft. And now who gives a damn? Look at the Boston situation. It's kind of similar to the same thing. They got them two first-round picks.
29:53Shannon Sharpe:The first one was Jalen Brown. Then the next year they got Jason Tatum. You know what I mean? You know how they got those picks? Because they swindled in the nets with KG and Paul Pierce went to Brooklyn. Yeah, yeah. We, hey, they swung for it. Shit, we ate them boys. Oh, I forgot. Joe was a part of that. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Listen, listen, listen, listen. We, they swung for it. Hey, man, over here, they swung for it. We, we. Dang. I forgot, I forgot Joe was a part of that. Yeah, yeah. Hey, we had a nice little whip. I'm gonna tell you what really, really hurt us. we end up being like a 7th seed that year.
30:40Shannon Sharpe:We got off to a horrible start, Uncle Ocho. We was on the front of Sports Illustrated. I'm talking about, they talking about how good me, Paul Pierce, Darren Williams, Kevin Garnett, Brooke Lopez, we supposed to be doing something. Man, we got out, we started out probably like 5 and 15. I'm talking about, we like 10 games under 500. I'm like, oh my God, I can't believe this. Anyway, for people who know basketball, Brooke Lopez wasn't shooting threes at the time. He had never shot. He probably had shot like two or three in his career. Now, that's all he do is shoot threes. So we were a totally different team.
31:17Shannon Sharpe:Brooke Lopez break his foot, and then we had to play KG at the five, Paul Pierce at the four, I was at the three. And so we kind of won small ball. Anyway, we ended up coming back being seventh seed, and that's the year we beat Toronto in seven games, and then we ended up playing the Miami Heat who had LeBron, D-Wade, Bosh, and they beat us in five. Five. They beat us in five. Hold up. That was when Paul Pierce said, I want LeBron. I don't need no help. Yeah. Hey, hold up.
31:45Joe Johnson:Let me tell y 'all something. Hey, what did he do? He locked him up? No, no.
31:51Shannon Sharpe:It was the competitive spirit that KG and Paul Pierce brought on Ojo because they weren't scared of them boys. And once you see that, it's infectious to the squad because they would they they were built like a come on man tell nobody beat them boys so man we went into every game i'm talking about we had beat them okay oh we beat them boys like like three out of four in the regular season oh choco we we were handling them boys right right and down postseason game mind you we have brook but man it was a whole nother ball game bro it's hard to stop brooke to stop shooting threes y 'all need brooke to play like a true big No, no, no, no.
32:31Shannon Sharpe:He wasn't shooting threes at the time. Hell, we needed him to be shooting threes back then. To pull the balls away from the basket. Yeah, so the only way he was effective, Brook was effective, if we threw it to him on the block. Outside of that, he wasn't doing nothing else. You know what I mean? He didn't shoot no threes. I've never seen in my life. The B-7-1, don't you get my five rebounds a game? I'm like, bro, you got an average lead double. Huh? It's two of them, right? Yeah, Brook and Robbin. Robin Brooke and Robin yeah yeah Ocho I come into the practice facility every day Brooke Lopez he's sitting up there on the on the training table reading his little comic books and everything he don't play he be locked there he be locked in yeah Dan that's messed up man we had a nice little squad bro it was good hey the relationship that I built with them dudes bro well we'll we'll we'll be forever bonded because boy they kg something else yeah the clippers punishment uh involves lost draft picks doesn't kick into 2029 because the los angeles doesn't own their draft picks until 2029 so when did it but they traded kawaii so what about kawaii's picks when does kawaii's picks come out if adam silver tried to take away their draft picks in 27 28 the league wouldn't be punishing bomber at all they'd be punishing okc in the philadelphia 76ers that That means the league office has to wait until the first available year that just happens.
33:53Shannon Sharpe:Okay, that makes sense. Also, another thing. ESPN ran a bombshell report claiming Steve Barman and the Clippers were essentially cleared of direct caps or convention. Boy, if this is cleared of direct caps or convention, boy, I'd hate to see if they were actually tied to it. They might have took their picks until 2050. hey man the the nba isn't really protecting the salary cap on the ocho they protecting the damn trust integratively protecting the trust because the minute these players and teams believe the richest owner can create another way to pay a guy right everybody coming in honcho now you're gonna have everybody questioning whether the playing field is is level you know i'm saying so if i'm If we all three of us owners and here Ocho done got caught, I'm like, damn, uncle.
34:42Shannon Sharpe:I'm just going to become a better hire. Because they mad about the owner, about the Lakers and Walters, purchasing teams with insurance money. They're like, that's not – because everybody can do what Mark Walters is doing. No, they can't. No, they can't. Well, how come he can get away with it? Because you see he had to get up off them Lakers, and he about to sell a stake in – what is that, Arsenal? he got a stake in some Chelsea hey Ocho we can't get no stake in Chelsea over there man
35:14Joe Johnson:hey Joe you know how much money we got to put together to even have a stake oh we can have a stake
35:19Shannon Sharpe:we going to that restaurant down there in Miami what's the name of that poppy you talking about that stake
35:26Joe Johnson:that's the only stake hey Joe let me tell you something I think we can combine everything we got in all our accounts right yeah yeah liverpool chelsea man city arsenal uh you know club like i'm talking about the upper echelon clubs yeah look at us and laugh
35:44Shannon Sharpe:you don't get up out of here man we might put everything together we might get us we might get a one percent one hey i don't even know if we get one you might be right it's expensive
35:57Joe Johnson:It's expensive, man.
35:59Shannon Sharpe:I already know that soccer ain't playing, boy. The question is, how do they overcome this? They don't have a draft pick. Now, do we know when they give up two? Didn't Toronto give up two first-rounders? But here's the thing. Toronto expect to be very, very good. So you're going to be picking at the bottom. You're picking 25 and on down. You want to be in the lottery. Toronto expects to be good this year yeah I mean that's what I would be thinking so those are the two picks
36:33Joe Johnson:Toronto, Toronto, Kawhi's back who else is Toronto? Scottie Barnes Yaka Portal Pascal is in India
36:42Shannon Sharpe:yeah Scottie Barnes, Kawhi Yaka Portal with them two alone with them two right there they made the playoffs They made the playoffs. Hold on, they got RJ Barrett. They got... Oh, that's right. RJ is over there. They got Quickly. They got a little Quickly. Yeah, Manu Quickly. They got Grady. I ain't gonna say his last name. Let's call him Richard. Grady Richard. Grady who? Grady Dick. They got Grady Dick over there. He nice? That's his man name? Yeah, he ain't bad. He all right?
37:16Joe Johnson:So he the two. Oh, they traded Grady? Did they? Let's see. Hey, Joe, who run the two over there? in Toronto. Probably RJ Barrett. Yeah. Okay. He from Canada, ain't he?
37:29Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. Yeah, he is. Yeah, he right at home. Oh, yeah. Now, Toronto, they got a nice little whip. Well, the East jumping over there. Hey, them boys finna be throwing a party over there in the Eastern Conference, ain't it?
37:42Joe Johnson:Yeah, but we know who coming out the East. We ain't worried about all that.
37:45Shannon Sharpe:Who? Who? Who? Who? Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Slow down, Turbo. Who coming out?
37:49Joe Johnson:Joe, don't do that, Joe. Come on now. Come on, Joe. don't do that. Ocho, Ocho, that's a bad thing. Hey, listen, Joe, I've been supporting your Cowboys. Don't sit here and do that when it come to my team. Don't do that.
38:00Shannon Sharpe:Don't bring my Cowboys in this. Listen, man, I'm just keeping it real. The East got, you know, we talking about my Hawks. We talking about the Knicks. Oh yeah, he part of the Clippers trade. He part of the Clippers trade, guys. Grady Dick, he part of the Clippers trade for Kawhi. Oh, okay. All right, I didn't even know that. they get they get they get Grady Dick Brandon Ingram two first round picks two pick swaps and a first round pick swap yeah he can play bro he can play he give him about he give him about 12 12 13 points a night yeah so that's what so he's not gonna be there he didn't trade to him yeah it'd be hard boy it'd be hard how you gonna call because you know most of the time in athletes, we call each other by their last name.
38:54Shannon Sharpe:How you would call that man his last name? But I ain't answer to that. Oh, you did?
39:00Joe Johnson:Wait, that's his last name for real? Y 'all just told him.
39:02Shannon Sharpe:Nah, that's his name, bro. Damn.
39:07Joe Johnson:I know, hey, what? Oh, you definitely changed your name. I owe you. Yeah. Yeah.
39:16Shannon Sharpe:Oh. Man. I mean. How do the Clippers overcome this, Joe? Because you don't have – you have pick swaps later down the line, but you get Toronto. So, basically, you're going to have Toronto's 27 and 28 first-round pick. But after that, you're out of gas. Just going to test my boy T. Lou. Y 'all know me and T. Lou, man. We ran together real hard in the A. When I first got here, I got Ocho, me and T. Lou. You know what I'm saying? Yeah, yeah. You know what I'm saying? Yeah. But anyway, he gonna have to be coaching his butt off. And like you say, man, he gonna have to have a couple of those guys really step up.
39:54Shannon Sharpe:B.I. gonna have to be, he gonna have to be one of them ones, man, you know, over the next some odd years. Because this gonna be tough, bro. This gonna hurt him. And them young guys who they developing, they gonna develop cats. T. Lou gonna have to come up with a great system where, you know, he can have guys thrive in it. So, outside of that, I don't know how you come on, I don't know how you overcome this, bro.
40:20Shannon Sharpe:That ain't why we ain't get him on him. You shoulda got a clip of Darryl on him, man. Man, he been crying the whole show. Just crying his leg and snot. Couldn't nobody understand a word he's saying.
40:32Shannon Sharpe:I guess that's the new thing. They do not, Ocho. When you knock down a pass, the guys. Oh, yeah, oh, yeah, yeah.
40:40Joe Johnson:The DVDs, DVDs. Is it this? Some may be wiping their nose. Yeah, I don't know what that is. I like the sore ones.
40:48Shannon Sharpe:Oh, you strapped them, you locked them down? Yeah, yeah, yeah. They do all that here, the ball, them win fire. Man, what you doing all that? You ain't strapped nothing up. I was like, come on, man. Come on. Hey, it be funny for you. Yeah, so Los Angeles Clippers received Brandon Ingram, Grady Dick, unprotected 20, 31, and 30. Well, y 'all ain't getting those. Y 'all lose those. So 31 and 33, y 'all forget that. Second round pick in 30 and 32 and a pick swap in 20. Oh, so they only get a pick swap. So you. But the Clippers, how you going to swap a pick and you ain't got no pick in 27? How you going to swap something you ain't got?

44:49Shannon Sharpe:You don't normally even swap ain't no swindle, Joe. Hello. Hello. But if you ain't got nothing to bargain with, what we do with? Right. Hey, man. I told y 'all about Peter Paul. Hey, Peter Paul say what? He said try it all. He did. Yeah. It got caught. Yeah, there we go. There you go. But that's funny. Man.
45:21Shannon Sharpe:Per ESPN, CJ Stroud would not be signed in an extension with the Texans before the season begins. The Houston Texans offered a contract exceeding$50 million annually, but he's better betting on himself to hopefully reach a near$60 million per year. Let's go. Make it$70 million. Make it$70 million. Joe, are you surprised he turned down$50 million plus?
45:43Joe Johnson:Absolutely not. Absolutely not. Listen, after the season he had last year, after the way the season ended, I'm glad he didn't sign the$50 million. Even if they came to him, in a sense, it's somewhat disrespectful and for what I know he can do. What I know he can do. I know he was injured last year, but the Mills had to come in and take over for him. But when he did come back, it wasn't pretty. That defense carried them most of the way. David Mills played extremely well. David Mills, right? Yeah, yeah. He played extremely well. And once they got to the postseason, C.J. Stroud was a shell of himself.
46:14Joe Johnson:If he can get it back to what he looked like his rookie year, obviously once the team get film on you, things change a little bit, you know, in order to try to be consistent. And that's what he needed to do. This year is a make-it-a-break-a-year for C.J. Stroud and a few other quarterbacks in the league. And I think the fact that he has to prove himself, he wants to show the organization that I can be a quarterback for the future. And I'm glad he didn't take that deal. And obviously, this is a year for him. I don't see it as pressure for him. Just go out there and do what you do. When you have a defense like they have him, you know.
46:47Joe Johnson:They had that defense last year, how he looked. they had a pretty good defense his sophomore year how'd he look when it mattered most how'd he look I'm not worried about the regular season because they're going to get to the postseason that's all that's all I'm talking about get a little further than you did last year let them see that you are the one let them see that you are the answer you got to check every check every box
47:15Shannon Sharpe:I hope it works out because everybody talking about betting on themselves We've seen situations where guys bet on themselves and it don't work out. We only tell the stories of the guys that bet on themselves and everything. That one?
47:27Joe Johnson:Okay, okay, okay, okay. I like him. Man. Nico Collin got him. Nico got him. Montgomery got him. Be able to take some of that pressure off of him. I'm trying to think who was the two and the three because Higgins went down. Hutchinson.
47:49Shannon Sharpe:they got Hutchinson and they got the tight end from the Dallas. I forget his name. Swartz.
47:59Joe Johnson:They keep changing. Players keep changing. Oh, you know who else is there from New England?
48:06Shannon Sharpe:Oh, Boote.
48:08Joe Johnson:Boote, yeah, yeah.
48:10Shannon Sharpe:Oh, hey, it's some pressure on CJ, though. Hell yeah, to you. Yeah, it's some pressure. I'm cool with him turning the money down. Okay, Ocho, if you're going to come out, you know, and get right. I just don't think I hear y 'all always talking about, oh, man, CJ going to get back to who he was as a rookie. Hey, man, it's just like saying, man, we waiting for Deshaun Watson to turn into that Deshaun Watson.
48:32Joe Johnson:No, no, no, that's completely different.
48:34Shannon Sharpe:Nah, but I'm just saying, bro, like that ain't, nah, nah, nah. I'm saying we want CJ to play better, but who knows if he's going to be an elite quarterback. I understand what you're saying here. He's just got to be manageable considering the fact that they have such a great defense. You think they're going to pay a guy$60 million for managing the games?
48:53Joe Johnson:No, but he's not even a managing-style quarterback. He's an aggressive passer to the ball. He loves to take those shots downfield. So, I mean, just play freely. Play freely. And you really have no choice. You really have no choice, especially in this past happy league. And they're a team that throws the ball.
49:10Shannon Sharpe:I know somebody that bet on himself. Kaminga bet on himself. How's that working out for him? Yep. What about Dennis Schroeder? he turned out a four year 84 million dollar deal and he's been signing one year deals ever since Kaminga turned out two for 48 now he accepted two for 13 you know what
49:31Joe Johnson:those two players that you just named I'm not sure who the people are they have in their circle but the situation for CJ Stroud is a little different because he gets to control the outcome he gets to touch the ball more than they do in their respective crafts and what they do he gets to control the outcome he controls the wins and the losses everything is on his show so guess what when they leave when they lose guess who's gonna get blamed
49:55Shannon Sharpe:oh as always so yeah he has more control for good things but he also has more control for bad things i don't know i gotta i have to look at that contract i gotta look at that hey what y 'all offering y 'all offering triple lor's 55 56 million a year y 'all will give me some what 125 decide guarantee 130 140 guarantee I don't know I gotta think long and hard
50:19Joe Johnson:oh I'm not thinking long and hard you know who else they probably came to too wait Jayden Daniels is in year three or four three
50:31Shannon Sharpe:they the same draft class right no he was the same draft class and Bryce Young and CJ was in the same draft This is CJ's fourth year. This is Jayden's third year.
50:45Joe Johnson:Hey, that's another one, huh? You just brought his name up. Bryce or CJ? I mean, or Jayden.
50:51Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
50:52Joe Johnson:Bryce is also an approved year as well. Absolutely. I can get it done. The next 10 years, I'm your guy. This is a year for them. And I think they're going to pick up and build on what they did last year. Yes, you're right.
51:05Shannon Sharpe:This is a year of the quarterback. I tell you what, watch the difference. Watch how Caleb Williams plays and after the season, how quick they get a deal done. Oh, yeah.
51:17Joe Johnson:But listen, even if they get a deal done with Caleb, he will probably reset the market to his highest value. Do you know why? Because they believe him.
51:27Shannon Sharpe:Oh, yeah, absolutely. I mean, look at him. Houston is hesitant to go to allow CJ. Remember, everybody said, hold on, of all the people that could get the most guaranteed money, this was the guy that reset the market?
51:41Joe Johnson:yeah absolutely well if you if you watch his film you watch what he's able to do absolutely one of the few quarterback one of the few quarterbacks on the joe in the league yeah something out of nothing i don't care what you scheme up if what you scheme up doesn't work he get he can uh emphasize emphasize is that the right words improvise there we go i'm talking about emphasize yeah he can improvise better than better than most yeah this is the make or break the infant boy big time him and Bryce because it's a lot when it's a lot weighing on their play
52:13Shannon Sharpe:on can't oh Joe meaning hell if they play well especially the Texans it's gonna be hard to beat them man that with that front they got you know what I mean defensively if CJ Stroud boy that's all you gotta do oh Joe Joe we don't we don't need 40 touchdowns from CJ it would be nice wait a Hey, that way. We had a pass, I believe. With that defense and 40 touchdowns, Ocho, they winning the Super Bowl.
52:40Joe Johnson:Absolutely. 40 touchdowns, with that defense, we winning the Super Bowl. Hold on, but what we can't have, Uncle Joe, is the C.H. drought we saw in the playoffs. No, you can't have that one. Two playoff games, seven turnovers?
52:52Shannon Sharpe:No, you can't have that one. Joe, this is back-to-back weeks. You're right. You're right, Ocho. Come on, man. Whatever he did his rookie year, go back and do that. now it's a little bit more difficult because like you said they got film they got film on you now he could be good he might he may be now they know they know what you're capable of they know your strength they play to your weaknesses
53:20Joe Johnson:I'm so glad you just said that Uncle Joe you heard a joke how Uncle said they know your strengths and know your weaknesses once you get film out they see the tendencies and the way they always use you in the one position you can't hide Joe that goddamn quarterback. Yeah. You can't hide him. Every other position, you can hide him. You can do little things. Yeah, yeah. You can do little things, you know, and scheme your way into not getting him exposed. Quarterback? In today's game? Nah.
53:52Shannon Sharpe:I already know it. But it's going to be very interesting. Look, he's betting on himself. Hey, you can't be mad for a guy gambling and betting on himself. hey all he got to do is hold it in the road all he got to do is hold just look in big games you got to play good in big games yeah because the defense will take the defense will take the games over in games that you're the better team it's just when you go up with guys and you got to face another quarterback that's equally as good if not better than you that's when you're gonna have to play it. We've seen him do it. We just haven't seen him do it enough over the last two years.
54:32Shannon Sharpe:If he does that, he's going to get that$58,$60 plus million contract that he's seeking.
54:41Joe Johnson:Hold on. What happens if he doesn't play? Is that deal off the table?
54:46Shannon Sharpe:Hell yeah. They give you no$50 million if you don't play good. Guess what?
54:51Joe Johnson:They'll pick up his 50-year option.
54:54Shannon Sharpe:picked up and just let him out and i got two franchise tags so theoretically i got him under contract for four more years at my number and something that i can stomach oh that ain't that
55:04Joe Johnson:that's what i got to be it ought to be sick if that happened i honestly knowing him and knowing that the competitor that he is that's not going to happen but that's nasty business from from organization that's nasty business if you offer if you offer if you offer somebody for a house
55:24Shannon Sharpe:you offer him 20 million for a house sight unseen then all of a sudden you go in there you look at the house like well damn the paint chipping they got a crack in the foundation X Y and Z you still offer them 20 million hell no it's going to take some repairs to fix this thing up it's going to cost me some money to get it that's how teams going to look at the quarterback yep he just needs to play well He just needs to block out all the stuff last year. Like Joe say last year. That's old stuff The new stuff the new CJ he cut his hair. He believes he believes he's worth more now He just has to go out there prove it.
56:03Shannon Sharpe:He has to go out and prove it Because based on what he did his rookie year, I was just like oh my god, we ain't seen anything like this here
56:11Joe Johnson:Hey, they got him one first thing I they got them one. Yeah
56:18Shannon Sharpe:The Titans have pulled Jerry Stillman's media credentials still and said the team told him YouTube based operations No longer war access inside the facility
56:29Joe Johnson:Damn, oh you I told you I Know it listen. I I didn't say anything bad about mr. Stillman. He does have a job to do He does have a job to do but do it the right way Do it the right way you can be critical of players but if you've listened to some of the clips I'm sure maybe you two haven't and maybe some people in the chat that might be Titans have. Boy, hey Joe
56:51Shannon Sharpe:he's very vocal
56:53Joe Johnson:very vocal. The Titans suck Cam Ward, you know what he has flashes but he sucks too I don't think he should have been in the number one I mean like talking like that and then the player obviously having to hear that for one, I mean it should go in one ear and out the other but just having to hear that your entire rookie season and then coming in and having to deal with the same individual, talking like that, I think is rightfully in the team's right to do that.
57:20Shannon Sharpe:At least he ain't just talking about Cam Ward. He's talking about the whole Texas team.
57:24Joe Johnson:Oh, yeah. He said, hey, Joe, he said everybody's up. Hey, he's not holding back, Joe.
57:32Shannon Sharpe:Hold on. So the dude who asked Cam Ward that question, they took his credentials?
57:38Joe Johnson:Yeah, yeah, yeah.
57:39Shannon Sharpe:you can't come around no more yeah i mean it's kind of provoking you know what i mean we go when when you ask when you ask those kind of questions or rhetorical questions man you know we ain't been that good bro but we trying to improve you know what i mean but as a reporter okay ocho their job is to come out and ask those tough questions they want they want to ask a question that's going to get that reaction and where they can be like okay again we got him You know what I mean?
58:08Joe Johnson:That's tough. That's tough. I mean, as a reporter, I understand you do have a job to do. For me, I would love to ask certain questions and allow the players to answer. And then in my own private time, write my articles and doing my YouTube stuff. Then I will say what my assessment is on their play based on the answers that they gave me.
58:28Shannon Sharpe:Yeah.
58:28Joe Johnson:Like if I'm Stillman, listen, Cam Ward, how do you feel you played this preseason so far? Allow him to answer. No, no, no, no, no.
58:35Shannon Sharpe:He asked him that he asked him to assess he had did he flipped it back on him? How do you think I played?
58:42Joe Johnson:Ah, but hold on understand why he flipped it back.
58:45Shannon Sharpe:You just said Joe what the Ocho just say repeat what Ocho just said Ask him a question. No, but
58:52Joe Johnson:You're not understanding the context and what I'm saying I would I wouldn't have been the one in there provoking him that he's been provoking him since he got there in general with all the stuff he's been saying outside in the meeting rooms and having to hear that stuff you know and it just so you knew that right yeah that i'm just saying if i was still in his position i wouldn't be the asshole that i've been to cam ward since he got there that's all i'm saying so he would when i do ask a question like that he's going to give me an honest honest response but since he's been an asshole to him the whole time he's like man what you think it was well i'm glad you think that And obviously as you can see the organization is sick of it, too.
59:29Shannon Sharpe:Let me ask you this When we're taking time for the team, what do they call them you a homer? With all you say is positive thing about the team you a homer if you say negative So so what about what am I supposed to do if I see you not playing well? So how do I handle that?
59:44Joe Johnson:Oh, Joe Wait, that's not true. I'm because you have to think these reporters they have to have one thing called credibility Yes, so all of them all of them say when the team isn't playing well None of them are as brash about individual players The way this person has been Especially talking about them the way they have They say when a player is playing bad They don't come out and say You know what
1:00:05Shannon Sharpe:Not really Because guess what will happen if I say he's playing bad too harsh You see what happens You pull my credentials See I got to be careful And this is my job How do I
1:00:19Joe Johnson:Because you can do your job without doing it The way he was doing it I haven't seen, I haven't heard about any other media member in the NFL for a very long time getting their media credentials pulled because they do the job a certain way. Whether fair or wrong. They do it in the right way. The way he was doing it, it's wrong. What makes it wrong? I'm not a reporter, I'm just saying. I can chastise, I can assess without being an asshole about it. It's possible, because I think they all do it.
1:00:46Shannon Sharpe:No, I think the thing is that you can make my job easy. Just play well. Play what if you do it if you do that that how many times the reporter asked you out your essential Assess your play today Yeah, I ain't never asked me that I say we play bad. I played bad It ain't no secret you get me by 21 points. Ain't nobody play good Offense defense mainly. I ain't gonna talk about anybody else. We didn't play well as a team But let's focus on us as an offense. Let me start with my
1:01:20Joe Johnson:I like that answer right I'm bad I was bad today
1:01:24Shannon Sharpe:I'm the vocal leader of the team is my job to get these guys ready to go That's what I'm here for my job is to go ahead and make sure this team is ready to play and I didn't do that today So that's on me. Yeah, I got to do a better job of making sure they ready to play Because when I looked at it looked like they were ready to play, but they fooled me Yeah, look like I guess everybody had on mass today but that's on us i guarantee you we won't play this bad next week yes sir i like it and also think about the question the question was imposed about pre-season snaps where you really don't
1:01:58Joe Johnson:have enough film put together outside of what you did last year to assess you talk about the pre-season no disrespect i know it's the pre-season you want to come out and you want to look good but everything is very vanilla especially when things are vanilla you would want those easy vanilla plays to go well, but they didn't. That's really nothing to assess. Let the man play. Let the man play. Let week one.
1:02:19Shannon Sharpe:Joe, if my simple plays ain't working, if they simple defense I'm going against, I ain't doing too much. What's your thing when they start dialing it up?
1:02:29Joe Johnson:Oui. Hey, hey, I mean, listen here. I'm just trying to make sense of it. That's all. That's all, baby. That's it. No, you're a little different. I'm a little different. You know, I'm an HR man. and everything whether I play bad, good, I don't care.
1:02:43Shannon Sharpe:So a reporter -
1:02:44Joe Johnson:I like to talk, Joe, I don't care.
1:02:46Shannon Sharpe:A reporter coming there trying to provoke you, it ain't gonna work.
1:02:49Joe Johnson:Oh no, I'm gonna flip that thing back, Joe. Yeah. I tell him, hey, you trying to provoke me, Joe, I'll tell you a joke.
1:02:55Shannon Sharpe:That's like somebody trying to provoke you, Iso. I mean, you a top-notch player and you played, but you were smart enough to understand when you didn't play well, you're mad enough to say that and not ask him, well, how do you think I played? Because now you're trying to take the emphasis off you. No, I asked you. I'm the reporter. Your job is to answer the question, not ask the question. Now, if we could flip roles, I would also like to flip salaries also. But since we're not flipping salaries, let's not flip roles. Hey, it's been plenty of times. I done came with, man. We was stir fry tonight.
1:03:28Shannon Sharpe:You know what I mean? Like, hey, ain't no way around it. Hey, some games, man, you got to ball them up. Hey, man, I don't even want to talk about that. But yeah, I get it, though. I get it.
1:03:38Joe Johnson:Hey, that was a bar you just did. You don't even know it. That was a bar. The flip-roll salary thing. Yeah, that was a good one. That was a good one.
1:03:47Shannon Sharpe:What you thinking? What do you say with on Joe?
1:03:51Joe Johnson:Hey, what? Hey, see, I got a dog I can take it to. They got all kinds of Maltese and Bichon freeze. Little, you know, toy poodles. He'll like that. Good. Yeah, let me come on down here with your boy. Hey, when he come back, he'll have a mohawk.
1:04:10Shannon Sharpe:Hey, he gonna be staying outside and everything. No, I'm a stupid inside dog. I like treats. Hey, Joe. Look, I understand.
1:04:22Joe Johnson:I had Thanos eating Pop-Tarts and shit. Oh, he already eat that.
1:04:28No,
1:04:30Shannon Sharpe:I think the thing is. I think you have to answer the questions with the same intensity you answer when you play good when you play bad it's easy when things are going well that doesn't tell me anything about you it's when things go bad that your character that's who you are name the time you curse somebody out when things go well name the time you get upset when things go your way that doesn't tell me anything about you that doesn't help us become and grow into the team that we need to be no I understand it you talk about somebody we got combined we got over 50 years of experience playing playing professional sports none of us had played our best ball every single game the objective is that when you play bad be mad enough to say I played bad be mad enough to say we need to play better i need to play better i don't want to talk about the defense because hey they'll get their act together let's talk about the side of the ball that i'm on something that i can control i can't control what they do on that side of the ball but for us and being a leader on that side of the ball that wasn't good enough today yeah i agree hey and if your best player your leader can can dance around a question like that Unca Ocho without getting offended, bro, it sends a totally different message, bro.
1:06:01Shannon Sharpe:It sends a totally different message.
1:06:04Joe Johnson:See, Unca's seasoned with that, Joe. Unca's seasoned. Unca's used to being in front of a mic. Unca's used to being able to manipulate questions and answer in the right way. He's seasoned like that. Everybody's not savvy in front of the mic, in front of the camera like Unca is.
1:06:21Shannon Sharpe:I kind of understand it. If the one guy you want seasoned, who is that guy you wanted to be seasoned, Ocho? Because you know what they
1:06:28Joe Johnson:The man who always had the mic in his face after again
1:06:31Shannon Sharpe:Every time you see the quarterback didn't get interviewed after the game
1:06:36Joe Johnson:Yeah, they all do they all do but they all answer questions They all have different personalities. They all have different deliveries, you know, so I mean it's he'll get better And as time goes on I like the Titans, you know, we're doing what they're doing trying to change the culture Especially the negativity that's going around no any good
1:06:54Shannon Sharpe:you look at him look what he's untweeted look what he's untweeted guys oh you got me nervous now give me two minutes I got to go to the bathroom nah bring your dusty ass on this thing we got something for you you talking about the Clipper
1:07:11Shannon Sharpe:we got something for you tonight Clipper Daryl we been waiting on this for a long time it's been a long time coming but yeah but that's yeah that's the thing ocho because you know just like they go to all these camps and they do the 40 they test the 40 you know yeah they get media training that's a part of the package that they go to now everybody get we didn't get that ocho first of all we have no
1:07:36Joe Johnson:money to pay for that hey um think about it even if they do get media training you know everybody ain't gonna operate that way yeah everybody's not personable everybody everybody's not you know the same way you are in front of the camera. Everybody the same way I am in front of the camera. Hell, I ain't even know Joe talked until he got on nightcap. Hell, I ain't either.
1:07:53Shannon Sharpe:Hey, hey, hey, listen. Hey, y 'all got to chill. Hey, listen, check this out. But here's what y 'all got to take into consideration. Cam Ward, what, 23, 24 years old, bro.
