In short
Early NFL preseason takeaways and key team questions, plus standout rookie/young-player performances.
Guests/backgrounds
Chad Ochocinco Johnson (former NFL WR, 6x Pro Bowler, 4x All-Pro) and ISO Joe Johnson (former NBA player, 7x NBA All-Star). They discuss football strategy and roster evaluation from a veteran perspective.
Key claims
- Preseason is for fundamentals, timing, and evaluation—not overreacting to results.
- Starters should get enough reps to avoid rust; young players often force plays to prove themselves.
- More defensive pressure/blitzing in preseason makes QB decision-making harder.
- Bengals’ biggest recurring issue is protecting Joe Burrow; pressure/sacks must be reduced.
- Cardinals’ WR Marvin Harrison Jr. needs focus and reliable hands; muscle/physicality may have made him less fluid.
Notable examples
- Titans beat 49ers 19-13; Cam Ward struggled (5-of-12 passing). Niners’ QB Martinez/backup evaluation; missed drive-finishing moments.
- Bengals beat Lions 16-14; Burrow pressured and sacked early; Chase completion noted.
- Cardinals beat Raiders 27-14; Kirk Cousins TD; Jeremiah Love explosive; Marvin Harrison Jr. made a key catch.
- Steelers beat Packers 28-9; rookie Drew Allar preseason debut: 54 yards, 3 total TDs, no interceptions.

Please drink responsibly and stay safe. Guys, preseason is officially here. with all everybody's going to be playing this week. And we're going to kick it off with the Titans. They beat the 49ers 19-13. Cam Ward did not play particularly well, guys. Look, it's the preseason. I don't want to read too much into it. But because everybody is really, really simplistic, the offense is simplistic, the defense is really simplistic, so it should be just pitch and catch.
7:51Shannon Sharpe:Five or 12 passing, Ocho, you said we're not going to read too much into it. What do you take away from this ballgame if you're the Tennessee Titans and Cam Ward? Well, listen, Cam Ward and the Tennessee Titans, what I would take away from it as a head coach, I want to see my veteran players, no MAs, no missed assignments. Can you run basic fundamentals of our offense and not make mistakes? Can we get a drive together? Can we get a series together, you know, first down, second down, third down, convert and keep a series going, something like that. I agree. It didn't look right, but this is what you expect.
8:28This is what the preseason is for. One thing about Unc, and I say it all the time, Joe, I'm not sure how it is with basketball, Unc, you can practice it 100 times. You can practice it 100 times, and when you're playing a game, it's completely different. The speed of the game, being able to process information is completely different. Everybody flying, the game is much faster as it is as opposed to practice. That's why I'm all for the veteran players always playing in the preseason instead of trying to go from 0 to 100 in week one because you need games like this to make those mistakes, to get the cobwebs out so you get a little bit more comfortable, not only familiar with your offense, but defensive players being able to read and react and be on point.
9:05Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. I agree. I agree, Ocho. Go ahead, Joe. Hey, hey, I thought, yeah, I didn't think Cam threw the – I didn't think he played great with just the first preseason game, but I thought Tennessee came out and they looked more ready, especially, you know, their first 95-yard drive. Look, y 'all see my boy Tony Pollard, the ex-cowboy out there. You see him out there doing it one, two. So, but outside of that, I thought San Francisco clearly, you know, tonight was really evaluating guys on Ocho. You know what I mean? Because you got Matt Jones ain't playing. You got Brock Purdy who wasn't playing. But they had guys out there who, you know, especially in the preseason, you don't really know what to expect from some of these guys.
9:47Shannon Sharpe:And I just felt the Niners were just really evaluating guys this first game. and they'll probably pick it up as the preseason continues. I thought the Niners played. They moved the ball well. Yeah. It was just they weren't able to finish off drives. You talked about being able to finish off drives as they relate to points, and I didn't think they did a very good job of that. I thought they had some good drives. Guys threw the ball really well. Guys made some tough catches. They ran the ball okay. They missed some. I would say this, Martinez in a situation, don't make a bad situation worse. Bro, you know you can't step out of bounds 14 yards behind.
10:20Shannon Sharpe:Now he got to try to kick a damn 70-yard damn field goal. Come on, man. Throw that ball away. You're not Daniel Jones. Not Daniel Jones. You're not Patrick Mahomes. That's not in your repertoire, bro. Coach, I mean, if he threw that ball away, I'm sure Kyle Shanahan in the meeting, quarterback coach in the meeting, offensive coordinator said, son, this is how we win ball games. You see, you could have easily taken a sack. You could have easily got an intentional grounding, but you were smart. You did a great job. Hey, you found a receiver. You sailed it over his head, and guess what? Now we got a manageable field goal.
10:58Shannon Sharpe:This right here gets us beat, son. Every time. This gets us beat. We can't have this. But like you said, Joe and Ocho, I thought Tennessee, especially the first drive. After the first drive, they were kind of like helter-skelter, kind of herky-jerky. But that's to be expected, as you guys said. The preseason, and I'm with you, Ocho, I wanted to play. I felt any time like, man, we got to go out there. I felt as a veteran player, that was an opportunity for me to work on my craft. That's just the way I felt. I needed somebody other. I needed to wear those pads. I needed to sit down in those shoes.
11:31Shannon Sharpe:I needed to have somebody bump me and push me and shove me so I could get used to the feeling of the game. It would have been very, very hard for me to go out there and not play any preseason games and then go out there and just go 100 miles an hour in the regular season. I'm going to tell you something. I ain't gonna fit a lot. Just think about it. Even in NASCAR, Ocho, what they do? They let you go around the track and get those tracks. And warming those tires up. Yeah, warming those tires up. Yeah. Hey, hey, hey. Okay, Ocho. Yes. And I know it's a little different in football because it's almost like a career-ending play every time in football.
12:05Shannon Sharpe:I mean, it's a collision. Yes, sir. In basketball, guys don't really – I mean, when I was young, bro, when I was coming up, even when I was playing in Atlanta, I ain't miss no preseason games, man. I'm out there trying to get money. I'm trying to get mine off. You hear me? I've been working on some on my game, bro. I'm trying to come out here and show some. And I think these young guys, what's the quarterback who played for Niners tonight? Martinez. Martinez, yeah. Yeah. He trying to prove that he can play on this level, bro. You know what I mean? And you get that a lot of times with these young guys.
12:40Shannon Sharpe:They come out, they force plays, they force passes because they want to show they belong. It's just human nature. And you know what, Ochoa? I felt like I needed to play because my uniform felt tight. To go out there and say, damn, I said, well, damn, either they shrunk this uniform or I'm getting fat or something. But I needed to feel it. I needed to be able to stretch and move around in my uniform and get used to wearing those pads with that tight-ass jersey on it. I needed that. Yeah. And I really appreciate it. I understood that it's totally different now. that I was going to get those 10 plays in the first game, probably get another 20 in the second game.
13:19Shannon Sharpe:The third game, we're probably going to the half and maybe the first series or the third quarter. And if we look like some bull jib, you're going to go to the damn fourth quarter. But you're going to put something to get back, going to make you put something on tape that he can be proud of. Or otherwise, hey, you might mess around and get a series in the last game if you ain't careful going out there bull jibing. But that was just me. But now I think because the money is so great that they play these players they don't want to hurt him but I'm like so what happens he come out there the first player of the regular season game and he didn't get hurt then what you look around like man maybe we should have gave him some reps I just think guys need to play some I'm not saying you play a whole damn game but I'm saying guys need to get some repetitions before they go out there and play a whole game which on Sunday especially players that are healthy Uncle Joe players that are healthy especially your veterans they need to go out there and get acclimated They need to go out there and get their feet wet.
14:13I don't care how long you've been playing the game. There's nothing like the speed of real active play on a Sunday when the bullets are flying and you're playing against somebody different. It's nothing like practice. So I'm all for people actually playing in the preseason. I was always one that wanted to play. Obviously, I told you and Joe this story many a times during the preseason. I forced Marvin Lewis to call timeout before because I didn't want to come out the game because I wanted to continue to get that rhythm and get activated to the speed of the game and whoever was in front of me. But outside of that, the preseason, I don't want people to get too caught up in the preseason.
14:50It's just evaluation, not for the starters, but for those that are trying to make this team, maybe not the team that they're on right now, but their resume. They're putting on tape a resume for themselves to get picked up somewhere else if things don't work out for their current team.
15:03Shannon Sharpe:And I didn't work on my breathing. Go ahead, Joe. And when you look at it, you know I want to see guys play too Anken Ocho don't mean they got to play the whole damn game yeah give us a few drives give us a few series to where we can really see something I mean you know what I mean like I'll be locked into the game bro and when I was playing Anken Ocho it was hard to keep me off the court bro it was hard to keep me off the court I just I thoroughly enjoyed and I love what I did and I just love to see guys come out and compete yeah I mean I wanted to go as long as long as John was going as long as the starter was going, I'm cool with that.
15:37Shannon Sharpe:I'm cool as going as long as he's going. Yeah. I mean, because I need to get my timing with him. I need to look, and we had a great rapport because I had been playing with him for so long, and I kind of knew what he was thinking. He kind of knew what I was thinking. But still, I still needed to get out there and get that. And I need to work on my breathing, man. Hey, I mean, you out there and you out there. Hey, hey, 84, get your hands off your knees. Ain't no air down there. I say, sure it is. Yeah. I see raccoons and squirrels. I see bugs down here. Somebody getting there. Hey. You lying to me.
16:07Shannon Sharpe:Y 'all ain't no air down there. I ain't heard that in so long. I ain't heard that in so long. That first preseason game or two, boy, you be winded out there, though. It don't matter how much shape you win. Man, I be blowed. Hey, Joe, the funny thing about it is, Uncle Joe, it doesn't matter how good a shape you may think you are. No, you ain't in that kind of shape. When you preseason?
16:31Shannon Sharpe:Because in football, obviously, there's more contact. but in basketball once you get guys leaning on you pushing on you yeah versus you running dummy offense out here every damn day going over the offensive sense man we need some pressure out here yeah and think about it like you said leaning on it so imagine you trying to block a man that's 300 pounds and you and then you are Uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh. Yeah, you're not breathing when you're doing all that. Hell no. That's what people don't understand. No, not one breath. Get taken. No. Hey, hey, get one more. Nah, I'm gonna fume. I ain't got one more.
17:14Shannon Sharpe:Let me come to the sideline. Let him get it. Let him get this one. But no, but I thought, look, and I think the thing is that what you want to do is that you want to build. Obviously, Cam would have liked to throw the ball better, 5 or 12, because normally it should be routine pitch and catch, especially a game of this magnitude where everything is vanilla. Now, it seems to be now, Ocho, teams are blitzing more. They didn't used to blitz like they did, Ocho. They're blitzing the hell out of people now. Yeah, and in the preseason, they normally don't blitz. Obviously, you know, you see cover one, you see cover three.
17:44KZ, you see cover two. But they allow you to run your basic vanilla offense, and I've seen a lot of blitzing, and maybe that is a good thing for the young folks. especially the receivers, you know, where you got to pay attention to the points and understand the mic or the safety, who's coming down and learn, learn your hot reads early. Cause stuff like that, it gets you fired now.
18:04Shannon Sharpe:Cause if you think about it, Ocho, I think San Francisco almost called a fumble. It looked like they call it a slot blitz or a cat blitz where they bought the corner. They fired the corner and he hit the back so quick, the back fumbled the ball and the quarterback ended up recovering. I'm like, damn, y 'all doing this the first preseason game? Man, save that one for a rainy day. Yeah. They want you to make them quick decisions here. They don't want to get a quarterback no time back there. You got to be able to think on the fly. Exactly. Ocho, your Bengals, some things just never change. They beat the Lions 16-14.
18:38Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. But he was sacked and pressured. Ocho, y 'all will ever protect this man. 22:26To correct certain mistakes, fix certain things. It's football. You know what's going to happen in football? Even when the Cowboys play, Joe. Even when the Broncos... Wait, let me finish. and be finished. Even when the Broncos and the Ravens play, Lamar Jack is going to get sacked. Hey, Joe, Dak Prescott, he's going to get sacked. Joe Burrow, throughout this season, he's going to get sacked. He's not going to be the most sacked, but he's going to get sacked. He's going to be close. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
22:50Shannon Sharpe:But I would have thought, Ocho, that y 'all would, I thought you guys had addressed this because y 'all know the number one thing is to protect nine. If nine is healthy, you got a chance. Without nine, you got no chance. I don't give a damn how great your defense has improved. You're not going anywhere unless nine is upright. And I'm like, damn, y 'all let people just run by y 'all. I mean, at some point in time, he said, you know what, Ocho? I ain't finna let this man beat my ass today. Not today. Next week, he might get me, but you not. Y 'all, I mean, he was pressured and sacked. I'm like, and they running around.
23:30Shannon Sharpe:Ocho, those are your starters, too, now. Yes, sir. Yes, sir. Them not your backups. Everybody played. And you know what I don't like, Unk? Because of the region I'm in, I tried everything to watch this game. I just wanted to see the first two series of the game because I knew Joe and the whole staff was playing. And I was kind of upset because of the region I'm in. I was able to get every single NFL game. I did all the extra ads and buying the subscriptions with NFL, and I still couldn't get it. At YouTube, TV, hey, Joe, I did everything. I just wanted to see those two series so I would be able to have a better assessment of the game and how they look and obviously i just saw highlights so that that doesn't give me any just to be able to talk about look i didn't think joe burrow played bad ocho i i seen him no he made some hell of a throws even one he threw the chase right there yeah yeah yeah yeah he looked good bro he looked good but hey they can't protect him hell if you can't protect him ocho how y 'all how y 'all expect to succeed you know throughout the regular season even make it to the playoffs.

24:29Yeah, you're right about that, Joe. And the one thing, though, our Achilles heel has always been obviously Joe getting hit. Joe having to scramble too much. Joe getting hurt. So if we can protect him and keep him up right now, I ain't saying give him eight, nine seconds now. Just give him two and a half, give him three, and keep people out of his face. We're going to be all right.
24:50Shannon Sharpe:I don't like to see Joe scrambling. Okay, old Joe. I don't like to see him scrambling. Hey, listen, his pocket awareness is nice now. Oh, it is. It is. It is. Very nice. Yeah. Yeah, that one is. The thing I would say, Ocho, I'm not trying to have him be like Dan Marino where he has single-digit sacks in a season. I mean, Dan sometimes has seven sacks in the regular season. I'm not saying that. That's a hell of a lie. I mean, but, Dan, can you keep him under 30? Can you keep him under 40? Yeah. Man, you start getting your quarterback hit that many times. First of all, sack, he goes down that many times.
25:21Shannon Sharpe:How many times did he get hit that he was able to get the ball away? Right. So you're asking an awful lot. But I'm just like, well, damn, they started this. The first two driving, he was sacked. I think he was sacked at least twice, Ocho, and he was pressured relentlessly. Because like Joe said, the one that he completed the chase, he was pressured on. Yeah. I'm like, well, damn. And O, O, O, O, O, O, you can't let that man run around you like that. Hey, I know one thing. I'm glad it is a preseason. Well, I'm glad you didn't have to watch it. You're going to be mad. You're going to be throwing it at your TV.
26:02Shannon Sharpe:You're like, damn, we start the game like this? Yep. But it was bringing pressure. Like I said, I've seen more pressure. And maybe it's because I'm looking for it now. Right. But I've seen more pressure recently as far as in the preseason than I've ever seen. The only time the guys brought pressure was like that third preseason game. That's when, okay, we're working on some stuff that we're going to get ready for going into the season because you know what? Our starters are not playing the last game, and we're going to bring out a few wrinkles on the offense. But, man, these guys bringing pressure.
26:37Shannon Sharpe:They bringing gut blitzes. They bringing mics. I'm like, damn. Hey, how many games are they playing in the preseason now? Is it a big difference? It's three or two. Three, right? Oh, they're only playing three. Oh, hell, they got to get to it. They got to open that thing up a little bit. Yeah. Hey, well, what opened up the second game? Them jokers hit the ground running. Now, I'm just like, hey, bro, they're like, these some troopers. They hit the ground running. Oh, yeah. I was like, damn. But you're right, Joe. I think the thing is, Ocho, is that because they only have those three preseason games, since you added that one regular season game, you took one away from the preseason.
27:14Shannon Sharpe:But if you know if they go to 18, Ocho, Joe, now they're going to take another preseason game. Now they're going to go down to two. It's going to be two. and i'm curious how that would work too uncle you got to think about all the players you got 90 some guys you got to get down to 53 and if you only have two preseason games how are you going to honestly evaluate though trying to make your team and trying to make an impact i don't know how that would work hold on did y 'all start off with 90 some players before this yeah yeah for sure you got not in the season but in the preseason before because you got to have those you got to have those bodies.
27:47Shannon Sharpe:We call those camp bodies, Joe. Yes. I mean, so basically 90, 95, 97 % of those guys know they ain't making a damn team. Yeah, because you got to get down to 53. Hey, Joe. So if you start with 90, that's 47 players got to get cut. Yeah. Hey, Joe, I don't think people understand. They talk all that trash about the NFL players that have made the team that are part of the 53, but I don't think they understand how good those 53 are. Yeah. They have to go to 53R because there's another 40 that gets cut that didn't make the goddamn squad for a reason. There has to be something special about you. Now, you know you have your elite players, right?
28:23Every team has maybe three or four, maybe five. You got five elite players on your team, boy, you hail. And there are a few teams like that. Seattle might be one. The Rams might be another. The Bengals are another. There are very few teams that have, I mean, multiple elite players on the team at a time. But outside of that, it's just.
28:40Shannon Sharpe:What Ocho said, they got Hall of Famers. You look at Kansas City. They got three for sure Hall of Famers. Chris Jones, Travis Kelsey, and my homeboy. Easily. You know, okay, Miles Garrett is going to the Hall of Fame. Devontae Adams is going to the Hall of Fame. Matthew Stafford is going to the Hall of Fame. So when you got guys that got Hall of Famers, and there's some teams that got, okay, we got Pro Bowl players, and there's some teams got all Pro players, And then you got some guys, and you know what? They working on a Hall of Fame resume. Yeah, yeah. There ain't a whole lot of – I mean, ain't a whole lot of teams got those now.
29:19Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. Ain't a whole lot of teams. You start looking around like, no. No, no. Yeah. But it's so different now. There's so much money involved. And teams don't want to risk in the preseason because, like you said, the guy's going 100 miles an hour because I'm trying to make the team. Certain guys are like, man, I got this in the bag. Let me just go ahead and work out some stuff. The other guy's like, well, I ain't got it in the bag. Right. Right. I ain't got it in the bag. Yeah, so I got to go out there and do everything I can to show these coaches that I deserve a spot on this, what, the 52, 53-man roster?
29:59Shannon Sharpe:53-man roster. How many on the practice squad? 53, but I think you got 15 to 17 practice squad. Yeah, so you got 15, 17 people, Joe, that that they they might get cut but even if they get cut they'll get they'll be able to come back for the practice squad and those are players that that the team and the organization feels you know what they can develop hey hey what kind of money they making on the practice squad though oh they make good what about i said if i heard what about i said if i heard it all the week oh no i got it it got to be way more how they doing it joe all they doing is practicing and eating free but uh what if i go what if i go out there and have a career ending injury like i'm 7 500 a month i mean a week a week hey man i can't do nothing with that hey hey i think you might have you have to look what you told me joe what you talking about hell i was making that and i was playing the hell you talking but you can't do that i was wearing every specialty and getting about five or six snaps on the old on the offense hey hey you had to get it how you live bro you know what i mean hey hey i'm wondering what i know they make 13 they make 13 5 13 5 a week that's that's that's good joe so 18 weeks 13 5 a week i mean i ain't no man almost a quarter of me that's a quarter of a meal hey that's good money joe thank you i was the first i was the first team all pro and a pro bowl player two my second pro bowl it made 300.
31:25Shannon Sharpe:And you talking about these guys with a practice squad? Ain't seeing the field. Oh, it's a new day. You talking about back in the 90s. Hell, they win 2026. Man, I was like, what day? Man, I sure wish I could make$13 ,000 a week. Boy, you could have told me nothing. You know what? God set it up just how it was supposed to be. He know damn well I would have been too big a damn fool to make that kind of money a week. he already know me he said nah i can't give you he's a man i can't 13 hold on oh sure that's 52 000 that's over 52 000 a month a month yeah that's a good that's good money that boy september october november december and half of january man they can't give me no damn near 300 000 as a rookie at 22.
32:12Shannon Sharpe:yeah that's good money you're gonna blow through that I had to Bluetooth some of them girls back. That's what I had to Bluetooth. What? I had to keep my pants. I couldn't afford nothing back then. Hell no, man. I might have been reek. I might have been about 10 on them. Boy. Damn. Oh, I'd have been broke. Oh, for sure. I'd have been broke. Where are they now? you'd be in front pain yep I would have I ain't had no money though
32:53Shannon Sharpe:and you know what probably not that bad because there's no social media so you don't really know what's on the other side of the world unless you go over there and I ain't really travel like that but now with the click of a button
33:10Shannon Sharpe:that's what's in case That's what's in Cape Verde? Yeah. That's what's in Cali? That's what's in Miami? Yeah. Why you sleeping? Quiet as kept. There's some stuff in the Midwest I need to see. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, no, man. God know he knew exactly what he was doing with Shannon Sharp.
33:32Shannon Sharpe:I'd have been on some real demon time. The Cardinals beat the Raiders 27-14. Kirk Cousins threw a touchdown. Raiders offense looked pretty good, but it was Arizona. Cousins won series five or six, 50 yards and a touchdown. Mendoza looked pretty good. Jeremiah Love. Man, that joker looked explosive. Hey, hey. Hey, hold on, hold on, hold on. Hey, he did go, what? That boy got some agent Peterson in him, the way he was running that ball. I'm talking about, I said, hey. Hey, he looked good. He really explosive, huh? Hey, I want him to stay on the ground, though. Hey, he was good enough of that. Yeah, he was good enough of that.
34:09Shannon Sharpe:that they're gonna break it but i have it oh yeah he young he young fellas y 'all know how them young boys hey look the man want to show he belong he want to show he worth that damn contract he got hey joe we know we know he belong but just stay on the ground all that hurdling now it's it's a time it's a time for that it's the time they might not stop him mocho but they'll break him with that damn habit oh yeah they they get him a fight but and i was we were talking to joe we were talking about uh uh about him and uh you was on here i think joe and i said oh joe if you look at him because we're debating what type of time he's going to run.
34:40Shannon Sharpe:I say, he looked like he sub 4-4. I say, because he look explosive in pads. I can just imagine. Now, you got to think about it. He going somewhere to train for just eight weeks. And all they're going to do is work on that. They're going to work on that. Two times a day, all you're doing is preparing. I mean, it's the ultimate job interview. All you're doing is running 40s, doing 225, short comb, short shuttle. That's all you're doing, Ocho. vertical jump, standing broad. And they're giving you the one. I don't know if they still take it, but they normally used to give the guys the one to take the test.
35:15Shannon Sharpe:Hey, take this. Get proficient at it. Man, that kid, he look really good. I agree with you, Ocho. You keep your ass on the ground, son. That's it. You ain't an astronaut. That's the only time you should be in the air if you're an astronaut. Yeah. And when you look at it, you look at Mendoza and Kirk Cousins. They both look decent. I know this is the first game, but they both look good. Y 'all see my boy? Y 'all see that ex-raiserback Mike Washington Jr.? You see that boy cut up out there? Joe, we ain't finna go through this every time you see a razorback on the field, man. Talk about the man cutting up now.
35:50You ain't seen my man out there doing one-two, huh? I seen him put on a mini demonstration. Yeah, mini one.
35:58Shannon Sharpe:He had a faster time than Jeremiah Love in the damn combine. Yeah. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. He can go now. He ran like 4-3. He ran like 4-3 flat. yeah
36:11Shannon Sharpe:Ocho I mean look at that Mendoza I knew he was big but I was like I didn't know he was that tall I didn't know he was like that yeah he was like 6 '5 yeah he was like 6 '5 yeah he was like 6 '5 honestly watching him at Indiana he looked taller than everybody else he looked big when I watched him play in high school down here in Miami at Columbus he didn't look that big Obviously, you know you do grow a little bit. That's what it is, Ocho. He put on weight. If you look at him when he was at Indiana and you look at him now, it looked like he put on like 10, 12, 15 pounds. You know they'll do that to you.
36:46Shannon Sharpe:They'll do that to you quick. Got to take that point of it. But no, but the cards, I thought, you know, Jacoby Brissett came in and threw a touchdown. It was good to see Marvin Harrison Jr. catch the ball because he ain't been doing nothing but dropping balls left and right in practice. Hey, you know what I thought? I don't, listen, AI is really, is getting to me right now because everything looks so realistic. And I don't know if they're taking clips from last year's training camp and they put it all together and making collages of Marvin Harris and dropping the ball. Yeah. And I don't know what's real and what's not, but I'm glad to see him make a kiss tonight.
37:24Yeah, make that kiss, yes. Back in the years. Who threw that? That was Kirk Cousins, threading the needle on that? I mean, not Kirk Cousins. No, that was Broussette. That was Broussette. threw the ball to Marvin Harrison with pressure in his face
37:36Shannon Sharpe:that was a very good anticipatory throw that was nice so I'm glad to see Marvin he need that for his confidence too if those are really him I doubt it but Ocho we talked about this and we thought this was something that he could correct from his rookie year because I thought it was just lack of concentration I thought he's like always try to make because i think the thing is the biggest thing for a wide receiver coming in from the college especially when you're the guy but let the carpool war winner you know you're gonna get 10 12 targets in nfl it ain't like that and so now what you start to do is you start to press everything is trying you try to make a house call and all of a sudden instead of you know instead of focusing on the ball you try to do this try to see where the defender goes so you can get up you can get up out of town and then the boot next thing you know the ball's on the ground I ain't never seen a guy score without the football in hand.
38:33Shannon Sharpe:So you can do all that you want to, but at the end of the day, you got to catch the ball. And I think with a little bit more focus, look, and there's a lot of pressure, Ocho. There's more pressure on him than any other receiver. You know why, Ocho? Because what didn't he do? He didn't do anything at the combine. What didn't he do? He didn't have a pro day. He said, y 'all done saw my film. That's good enough. So he put even more of pressure on himself because he didn't do any of that. And so now people are like, well, okay, that's fine. Yeah. But you need to go out here and do like – hey, you need to go out here and do like them other guys that came out, high draft picks, the Jamar Chases and all that.
39:08Shannon Sharpe:Chase was like the fifth pick in the draft. But you're talking about this guy with the third pick in the draft, fourth pick in the draft. Same thing with Cardinal Tate. When you go that high as a receiver, bro, they say you franchise altering. Oh, yeah. Yeah. They want to see something. Hey, listen, Uncle Joe, the way he played at Ohio State, that's exactly what I expected him to be in Arizona one year he came back he was slim obviously the same size it was at Ohio State and he came back the following year man he got hey Joe I'm like but god damn what you was doing to me honestly I think he put on too much muscle I think the way it makes you more robotic and not fluid he don't look fluid he got that wiggle Yeah, at Ohio State, he was fluid with wiggle.
39:57And he put on the muscle. It just makes you too, hey, hey. I don't know how to explain it. Unc, you know what I'm trying to say.
40:04Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, yeah, absolutely. Yeah, that's what happened. He felt that he needed to be bigger. He felt that he needed to be able to play through the physicality because those guys are physical. And once they find out they can put hands on you and you're bothered by that, guys going to press hell at you. Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Go ahead. I'm going to say, Joe, you can be wiry. You don't have to be swole. You just have to be able to learn how to give people a half of your body. A half of your body and knowing how to use technique, wiping, dipping the shoulder, just getting up out of there. But putting on muscle, to me, I think it just slows you down.
40:45That's just me. Unless you are that style of receiver. When he played at Ohio State, he wasn't even that style of receiver.
40:52Shannon Sharpe:that's not what he does no his i mean even though he's he's big uh he ain't he ain't to he ain't julio he ain't that type of receiver no no those guys looking to play those guys are looking to play through contact and they well they welcome contact too yeah come on put your hands on me if you want to but he got the body for that though yeah but that's not no no no no you got to be careful and that's the problem that he has because he has the body if he lives too much you see what happens he gonna he'll mess around to eat himself into a three-point stance he'll be a tight end he'll be elf yeah nah bro you don't want them type of problems yeah leave my hey block them corners of safety leaves miles garrett and and nick bolster need them alone leave them alone you don't want no problems yeah i hope he has a good year though i hope he has a good year he gets you get um you know all that stuff behind him that's what practice for get Get your drops out now.
41:50Get all your drops out you want right now. As long as you go into the season with confidence, he's going to be all right.
41:56Shannon Sharpe:Hey, speaking of all this, man, we ain't doing no fantasy or nothing this season. We can't get it. What's up? Oh, you want a fantasy team? You want to pick a fantasy team? Yeah, let's compete. Yes, we all have a fantasy, Joe. What's y 'all about? I don't know why you want to lose. Oh, man. Here you go. Coming last place. I bet I don't. 45:54Shannon Sharpe:Definitely. The Steelers beat the Packers 28-9. Steelers rookie Drew Aller in the preseason debut. Boy, he was dealing, boy. He looked good. 54 yards, three total touchdowns, no interception. He looked really good. He looked like a good pick. I mean, you know, they got Howell. I think Howell is the guy that they got from Ohio State. And obviously they got Aaron Rodgers, who's going to be the starter this year. But I thought Howell played really, really well. And I like to pick up a Tanya. Aaron Rodgers is very familiar with Robert Tanya. He was with him in Green Bay. He hurt his knee one year.
46:28Shannon Sharpe:He spent last year, if I'm not mistaken, in Kansas City. Obviously, Mike McCarthy is very familiar with him. He drafted him when he was in Green Bay, if I'm not mistaken. Nah, I don't know if Mike drafted him. I think, whatchacallit might have drafted him. He might have, though. But I know Aaron Rodgers is very, very familiar with Robert Tanya. And he was a very good receiver for Rodgers. And tonight, I mean, it just seemed like to him, they were just throwing the ball just one drive. They threw the ball to him like three or four times, and he took it right down the field. But what did you like about what you saw from Drew Alor, Ocho?
46:58Hey, Uncle, he looked good. In command of the offense, moved the ball extremely well, very confident, you know, in the pocket, delivered all the throws. He was really, really good. But again, caution to the wind, Uncle Joe. It is the preseason. But listen, but what else do we have to evaluate? Right, right. We have to evaluate during the preseason. So based on what we saw, the small symbols we saw from Drew Aller, he looked extremely good. Mason Rudolph, eh, eh, you know. I mean, listen, he's been in the league eight, nine years. Eight years, I'm not sure which one it is, but he is what he is based on what I saw tonight.
47:33Yeah, yeah, yeah. At some point, probably after the second preseason game, I'm sure Drew Allen, if he has another performance like he did tonight, he will probably be the start. He will probably be the backup. You think so, Joe? Yeah, yeah, absolutely. Absolutely. Because, I mean, no disrespect to Mason Rudolph, but he is who he is at this point. We've seen him multiple times when he's had an opportunity to start, but he's really not the answer, especially one to supersede, nope that's the wrong word be the successor of Aaron Rodgers you don't think A-Rod gonna make it through the whole season?
48:09oh no I'm saying in general just for the future you gotta think yeah we talking about for the future they need a quarterback they can say you know what this is our guy for the next decade and it's not gonna be Mason Rudolph and Aaron Rodgers not gonna play that much longer being that he said this is his last season so somebody has to step up and be that quarterback of the future.
48:29Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, they got to find a quarterback. They need one bad. I mean, obviously they waited too long to deal with Ben Roethlisberger. They didn't want to tick him off. But you can't be afraid of that because it leaves your franchise in hell, not even purgatory because in purgatory you kind of hover and you're in between heaven and hell. But they leave you in hell because without that guy, and you see what Green Bay did. They pissed Aaron Rodgers off, but they got a bridge for the future, though. Yeah. Not just any bridge. That was a damn good bridge. You see what Kansas City did. They had Atlantic Smith.
49:07Shannon Sharpe:They drafted my homeboy. They got a golden highway into the future. You've got to think like that. You can't be afraid to take these quarterbacks off because, oh, I didn't want to upset him. But when he retired, then what? Yeah. You're right, Unc. You got to take them chances, bro. Because I feel like the Steelers had an opportunity to draft good quarterbacks. Unc and Ochoa. Yeah, for sure. They just passed up on them for whatever reason. Mm-hmm. You got to be willing to take chances. Hey, look at the Rams. The Rams took a quarterback in the first round with the MVP. The guy just won the MVP, and they took a quarterback in the first damn round.
49:47Yeah.
49:48Shannon Sharpe:They're like, you're not finna stick us because the likelihood of us being in this position, because the thing was is that they're looking at it like this. If we are who we believe we are going to be, we're not going to be up high enough to get a quarterback to come out in the draft that's any good. You know what? Now is just as good a time as any. Because, look, we got Matthew Stafford under contract for another two years. Now we'll cross that.
50:17Shannon Sharpe:Ojo. Yeah. I thought they were my But I have refused To get caught holding the bag And our quarterback all of a sudden gets Nick or he's out and he's done And then we ain't got no quarterback Because the one thing We know about the Rams bro LA is all about winning If you don't win in LA Why you think the Dodgers Everybody that's a free agent That's costing 300 million the Dodgers Go get Oh, yeah. Why you think the Lakers have always been showtime? Man, them front row seats, they want to see winners. Yeah, yeah. There's too much going on in L.A. for you not to win if they're going to show their ass up.
51:01Shannon Sharpe:They want the entertainment. Man, I could be at Venice Beach. I could be at Santa Monica. I could be on somebody's rooftop. I could be running Canyon. I could be doing a million other things than sitting my ass in a stadium and watch y 'all lose. Oh, hell no. Oh, yeah. But you know the funny thing about it? What's that? Do they have an answer to the quarterback, though? Do they have the answer when he decides? Matthew Stafford's side, you know, to step away after these two years. Is it Stetson? Is it? Wait, what's it? Stetson Bennett? Yeah, Stetson Bennett. And they took Simpson from Alabama. Ty Simpson.
51:41Are they the answer?
51:43Shannon Sharpe:I'm a choice. The one thing I will do, the one thing that they can't do out of that system is they can coach up that damn quarterback. You remember some of the quarterbacks that Kyle Shanahan had before he got Brock Purdy. I'm like, man, how are you getting these dudes to throw for 300 yards? The funny thing about it, you got to think about the offenses. Those offenses that they run are quarterback friendly. Yes. They're quarterback friendly. So, I mean, we're going to see. We're going to see. But there's a reason why Matthew Stafford and everyone that's played in that system has had success. Yeah.
52:17Shannon Sharpe:We got to make sure we call him Matthew Stafford. Kelly does not like when you call him Matt. So, Kelly, we going to make sure we call him Matthew. That is his name. He likes to be dressed as Matthew Stafford. So, Matthew, he played. I mean, he's been playing his tail off. He's always had this kind of ability. He's just been in Detroit. Yeah. It's amazing. a guy can put up the same numbers and be in a bad situation and people think he trash and he go to, he the same Matthew Stafford always has been the man threw one year for 5 ,000 hold on, how does a man throw for 5 ,000 yards 41 touchdowns and does not make the Pro Bowl well, Detroit it ain't like he wasn't throwing I mean he did have Megatron yeah I don't know if people think Megatron was any good, but I like to think he's pretty damn good.
53:13Shannon Sharpe:Hold on. Very damn good. Very, very damn good. Hey, with 5 ,000 yards, did they make the playoffs? They couldn't have made the playoffs. They did. Oh, did they? 11-5, yeah. Damn. That was the last game. As a matter of fact, Matthew Stafford, that was the last game of the year. If I'm not mistaken, I think Aaron Rodgers ended up winning the MVP that year. That was the year Matthew Stafford threw for 5 ,000. He had 41 touchdowns, eight interceptions. He threw for the last game against Green Bay. He threw for 520. 520, 523, 522, something like that. And that was the kid. You remember what's the one that ended up going in free agency?
53:50Shannon Sharpe:He went to Seattle and then got beat out by Russell Wilson.
53:57Shannon Sharpe:What's his name? He's from LSU. What's the guy's name?
54:02Shannon Sharpe:Oh, man. Matt what's this guy's name? His name was Matt something. Quarterback? Yeah. He backed because Aaron Rodgers sat out the last game and they went they went back and forth. He threw for like 380 something and six touchdowns and Matthew Stafford threw for like five something. Matt Flynn. Oh, okay. Matt Flynn. Chad, go look that up make sure I'm right. Last game of the season. Matt Flynn and Matthew Stafford have a duel out. Stafford threw for over 500 yards. Flynn, if I'm not mistaken, had like five or six touchdowns. And then Flynn, three years, got three years,$30 million, and then go to Seattle, and then gets beats out by Russell Wilson.
54:49Shannon Sharpe:Russell Wilson, yeah. But go back and look at Stafford that year. That was 2011. Was it 2011? I think it was 2011. Because Russell came in in 2012.
55:09Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So it was 2012, yeah. That's what it was, yeah. I was like, well, damn. But Matthew Stafford, he can just flat out spin the ball, man. Hey, hey, hey. They were talking about the kid because you know, Ocho, he came from Texas. Yeah. And people was talking about it. I'm like, how y 'all talk about this man going to be the number one pick in the draft and the man ain't took a damn college snap? Hey, tremendous arm talent. Oh, my goodness. That man can flat out spend a damn football. Yeah, he going to throw that thing around the yard now, especially when he got some talent surrounding him like he got now in L.A.?
55:44Shannon Sharpe:Man, it's almost unfair. Hey, he done mastered that no look now. I mean, he do that thing routine. He really good at that. That's when you know the game, the change. How you defend that? I said, that's when you know the game done changed. It done got advanced because Mahomes, I sent him throw something behind his back one time. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. I like that. When he did that shovel pass, he went to the limit, put it behind his back to Kelsey. But it's one thing to throw a no look. It's something entirely different in the Super Bowl in the fourth quarter and you down four points. That's a whole different ball game, Joe.
56:26Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. That man threw a no look on third down in the Super Bowl. Down. That's crazy. Boy, that Joker, hey, he got some bowling balls. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. You got to have some kahunas, boy. To do that one? Absolutely. I already know, man. Man, that'd be like something. Hey, Joe, I guess that's somebody coming down, shooting a step curve. Y 'all down six. Y 'all down five points. and he come down and shoot a Steph Curry. One step cross half. You're going to look at that man like, hold on. Yeah, one step cross half, yeah. What Steph did, remember that Saturday night game against Oklahoma City with Steph Curry?
57:10Shannon Sharpe:They were tied and Steph took one, two step cross half court and let it go. And let it fly. Hey, nobody even contested because you ain't even thinking he finished. He ain't finna pull up from there. Contest what, Joe? Hey, hey, but it's kind of similar. is similar to the same thing Wimby done in one of those games in the finals. Yes, against Oklahoma City. Yes. Yeah, against Oklahoma City. Yeah, you know, you see a guy coming down, you're like, man, he ain't going to shoot that from no one or two steps across half. No. Guard it for what? Because now I go out there and guard him, Joe. He go by me and get an easier shot.
57:45Shannon Sharpe:And now they're going to be like, why the hell you let that man go by? Why you picking him up way out there? That's exactly what they're going to say. Yeah. You can't win. You got to be careful. Because remember, that's how KD got that shot off against Braun. Braun was like, you know what? He ain't finished shooting this ball. Yeah, he is. Same thing when Dame Lillard shot that thing over Paul George. Ain't no way I think of Dame shooting that. How he sidestep from 37? Dame was by the logo damn near right? Yeah, he's 37 feet out. Ocho, Ocho, first off, Ocho, this was the close the series. This ain't, this wasn't, you know what I mean?
58:26Shannon Sharpe:This is like bye-bye. We'll holler at y 'all later. Yeah, he hit that side step to the right. Come on, if I was guarding him way out there, Ocho, and I'm looking at the clock, it's three seconds. I'm like, hold on, dude, one step across half. What are you going to do? Like Paul George contested the shot. He did. Because you know when Dane got the ball, Paul turned around, he messed around, he looked at the clock because the clock was down. He looked at him like, oh yeah, I'm good. Hey, you ain't fit to get by me. PG's like, I'm good, cuz. I ain't worry about nothing. Let me lock this thing down right here.
58:57Hey, bro, that's different.
59:00Shannon Sharpe:Dollar say, you really not that good. Hey, hold on, Joe. Speaking of Dame, boy, you seen the clip circulated on Twitter with Dame working out? Or playing runs? Oh, that boy, he look good. He in some shape. He like, he done trimmed down. He done tightened that body up a little bit. Damian was a workout freak because, you know, he liked to get his boxing on. Damian a workout freak now. Yeah, he get to it. Hey, hey, hey. Portland might try to pull something off, boy, in that Western Conference. Man, his demeanor, man. It's just like I always liked his game. I mean, you know, obviously, you know, being out there on the West Coast and being able to watch their game, I'm like, man, people don't realize how good this joker is, man.
59:45Shannon Sharpe:Boy, nice, boy. Hey, man. Nothing fazes that kid, bro. No, man. He got the right demeanor. He from Oakland. So obviously, you know ain't no nothing bothering. But I mean, just to see him and just like, how you shoot the ball? How you shoot the ball? Like him and Steph, they not overly big dudes. I can see if they're like six, four. Bro, they like average size dude. Dane, Dane might be what? What you say, Dane? Like six, six, one? Maybe. Six, two. hey look okay ocho the man gave us 63. the man gave us 63 points man 60. oh you can let it go man ocho i ain't lying oh i'm telling you it was so remarkable to watch because you know we had rudy gobert at the time who great defensively yeah we couldn't we we had no coverage for him he was shooting deep threes he was running by rudy he dunked i'm like all right he don't know and that one he don't know rudy man that boy i don't know what it is about utah bro He loved – because he went to Weber State.
1:00:44Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. Up in Ocho, which is in Utah. So, I don't know if he just loved playing there, but he used to give us a word. He said everybody get a chance to see him. Yeah. Woo-hoo-hoo. He used to give us a word. Hold on. Didn't he drop – he dropped like 70 – who he dropped 70 on? He dropped 70 – was it Milwaukee? Or something? He dropped 70, like 72 on somebody. 70, 72? I'm like, bro, what? He's like, man. Man, they started tripling the man. The man getting the ball, they leave everybody else there. He got three men. They're like, nah, you not been to get no 80. Nah, and can still score the ball with two, three guys.
1:01:17Shannon Sharpe:Bro, that's different, bro. Come on, man. Come on, man. When you can shoot the ball, when you can shoot the ball like that, they ain't got no answer for it. Hell no. Hey, hey, Ocho, you trapped me here. I done done my job. I'm giving it up. Hey, hey, it's somebody open here. Y 'all ain't gonna make a damn play. He's shooting over the trap. He do, he do.
