In short
Nightcap Hour 1 is a late-night sports talk show focused on early preseason NFL takeaways and a quarterback competition storyline.
Guests
Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson, former Pro Bowl/All-Pro NFL wide receiver; and Joe Johnson (“Iso Joe”), seven-time NBA All-Star and former Atlanta Hawks player. The hosts also discuss general team evaluation and contract/salary-cap philosophy.
Key claims
The Cowboys’ 17-7 win over the Seahawks featured a “hidden gem” rookie, Camden Brown (Georgia Southern), highlighted by an impressive one-handed TD catch (8-of-12, 94 yards, 1 TD). They praise Dallas’ ability to respond offensively even with starters resting, but worry about defensive consistency and quarterback protection/avoiding big mistakes. They argue every preseason snap is a job interview for non-starters.
Notable examples
Jalen Milrow’s struggles for Seattle (timing/decision issues) and Drew Locke’s missed deep opportunity. Later, Cleveland’s Deshaun Watson vs. Shedeur Sanders debate: Watson looked limited (11-of-15, 126 yards, fumble; no throws over 10 yards), while Sanders threw deeper early but had an overthrow and an interception (6-of-11, 79 yards).

5:26Shannon Sharpe:You had them chucks? I can't lie. We were impressed. We were impressed. He did us proud today. Hey, Joe, I pulled your move too.
5:36Joe Johnson:What move was that? The hezy pull? The hezy dribble, dribble pull.
5:41Shannon Sharpe:I see it in Ocho. I see it.
5:43Joe Johnson:I try to do – most of the time you do it with three dribbles. I can't do no three dribbles, boy, because I lose control.

Cowboys pass rush today. They did have three sacks. Most of the starters did not play. Sam Howell was extremely impressive, although it was preseason. A big-time TD throw to Camden Brown.
7:06Shannon Sharpe:He finished 8 of 12, 94 yards and a touchdown. And the rookie Camden Brown out of Georgia Southern, Statesboro, Georgia. One-handed catch everybody's talking about. Did the Cowboys. Joe, we're going to start with you first. This is your team. Cowboys found a hidden gem in Camden Brown. Man, hey, don't act like y 'all ain't see that. Camden Brown looked good tonight, especially the little one-handed catch he had. Hey, hey, hey, I thought he was impressive. I thought Joe Milne was impressive. So, you know, I like what I've seen. Obviously, you know, we're still at a stage to where we're kind of, you know, just evaluating guys because, you know, you don't get your big guns playing probably until the second or the last game of the preseason.
7:47Shannon Sharpe:But it was fun to watch them boys get up and down. I honestly was impressed, bro. I was impressed.
7:55Joe Johnson:What did you think of, Joe? Hey, honestly, Joe, listen, the young Bulls are making some plays. Obviously, you want to evaluate some of the talent that's going to be backups and maybe third stringers, some of the players you want to bring back for your practice squad. But again, Joe, I know it's just, I just want you to remember.
8:09Shannon Sharpe:Yeah.
8:10Joe Johnson:Caution to the win. This isn't just the precedence. Okay. I know, Joe, I'm with you. I'm with you. You got a little too excited for me, Joe. You got a little too excited. Ain't no thing. But this is a good thing. This is a good thing. Being able to evaluate players and seeing those players that can make plays on the big stage in certain pressure moments, even though people say, oh, it's not a pressure moment. It's just an NFL game. No, it's more than just an NFL game. It's more than that because there's a lot of pressure on these players That are trying to make the team And one of the things that most of the time that you do Is in situations where you can't make mistakes Because you're trying to make a team You make mistakes Because of the pressure that's on you And listen I'm excited for the Cowboys You know how I feel about the Cowboys, offensively Yeah, well I'm just saying My only worry is defensively
8:59Shannon Sharpe:Right, right And I thought, hey look, speaking of defense and Seattle looked good on that first drive, Uncle Ocho. Yes. Took them down, scored right away. I'm like, damn, you know, that was fairly easy if you asked me. You know what I mean? But after that, we slowed them down. They ain't really – No, you didn't slow them down. They slowed themselves down by putting Jalen Milrow in the game. That's not nice. Because he faking 7-on-7 that he got all day, Ocho, to throw the damn football. He refused to throw the football on timing. And if he's not there on timing, throw the ball out of bounds. Throw the ball away.
9:29Shannon Sharpe:But he constantly thinks he can pat the ball. Ah, ah, ah, down. Ah, ah, down. Bro, get rid of the damn football. If Drew Locke had the guy on the slug, Ocho, he had an 80-yard touchdown. He overshot him. That's not the time to show off your arm. Even if you underthrow him, at least give him a chance to catch the football because you know if you overthrow him, he's not going to catch it. Maybe if you underthrow him, you get a P.I. It's a spot foul. It's plays like that. And Drew Locke has been in the league far too long. He's been a starter in Denver. He's been around far too long to make that kind of mistake.
10:04Shannon Sharpe:But I thought Jalen Milroy, after a guy that was in the league, he's going into his second season, I didn't think he played well, Ocho. Given who he is, being in his second year, those are mistakes that a rookie make, not a second-year player. Right. Yeah.
10:22Joe Johnson:Hey, oh, man.
10:24Shannon Sharpe:Hey, look, look, look. When you think about it, though, Seattle came out super sharp, though. They did. They look good. Yeah, I thought they were hitting on all cylinders, but I do like that Camden Brown kid because think about this. You got Lamb and Pickens out there, man. If you can come up, and I know we got other receivers too, but to have a hidden gem like this. Illinois. Oh, man. I was surprised. Hell, I didn't expect CD to play because Dak didn't play guys. I didn't expect CD and Pick to play. But damn, they rested their third and fourth guys. Fourth, third, fourth, and fifth. I'm like, well, damn.
10:58Joe Johnson:on you know what that means especially when you rest your third and fourth fifth guys that means that's just how good they look yeah there's no question there's no concerns when it comes to the third and fourth guys and who they are that's why they had a wrestling if they if they look good in camp monk these past six seven eight days oh they would have been playing yeah yeah i think i think
11:16Shannon Sharpe:for the most part you know um joe you said something very important like um about the uh not making too much of a big deal out of this game. But who goes into a job interview and say, man, this ain't nothing but a little job interview. Every job interview is important. That's what this is. If you're not C.D. Lamb or Pick, it's a big-time job interview for you. If you're not one of the starters, one of the 11 on offense, one of the 11 on defense, this is a big-time job interview for you, not only for the team that you're on, but for the other 30 teams that's going to get taped of this ball game.
11:51Shannon Sharpe:So you're constantly, you're always in a situation where you're trying to impress. Even if you want to impress yourself because you want to make sure that what you've been practicing and everything that you've undertaken and all the offseason work that you put in, you want to make sure that you know what is paying off. If it doesn't pay off here, there's 30 other teams. Maybe it pays off somewhere else. So you always want to put your best foot forward because you never know. Right. And sometimes guys like, well, man, man, damn, man. Yeah, you might be struggling with that team, but you might need to go somewhere else.
12:26Shannon Sharpe:And if you go land somewhere else, that's your opportunity. Yeah. But I agree with you guys. I thought Seattle came out, looked really good. They looked really sharp. One, two, three, ball was out. One, two, three, ball was out. Guys made plays. I like Drew Locke stepped up in the pocket, scrambled, picked up a first down. I like that. Made a big-time throw. A guy got held, still made a big-time throw to go, caught the football. But I think Dallas' response, I was really impressed with Dallas' response to go right back down the field, even though they didn't score a touchdown. But the first – I mean, think about it.
13:01Shannon Sharpe:Seattle had the ball for like almost eight minutes. Then Dallas get the ball and then give the ball back to them until 12 minutes left in the second quarter. I was like, well, damn. I said, hey, we might be on it by 9.30, till the clock. At the pace, they go, damn. It was like tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick. But I like, you know, in a situation like that, the ball is moving. The clock steadily moves. You like games like this here. You can get into a rhythm, not a whole lot of stoppage. It wasn't a whole lot of injuries, guys going down. I was impressed.
13:34Shannon Sharpe:I thought both teams played extremely well, considering this is the first preseason game. And I'm not saying, oh, oh, my God, Seattle's going to be back-to-back Super Bowl champs on it. Dallas Cowboys, I'm not saying that, but I thought the floor of the ball game and the way they played, I thought they looked really crisp tonight. Yeah. I agree. So, hey, the way they like – the way Camden Brown looked, they might not even pay pick, Ocho. No, no, don't do that. Don't do that. I'm just saying, Joe, you say you like me. But it's good to have a reliable fourth, fifth, third option, you know, that you feel like is comfortable that can step up in some of these games, man.
14:15Shannon Sharpe:Damn, take some pressure out Pick and Lamb. Come on now.
14:18Joe Johnson:Hey, but they already got one, Joe. They already got one.
14:22Shannon Sharpe:Blanoi.
14:23Joe Johnson:Blanoi. He nice, Joe. Blanoi, number 19.
14:25Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, he really good.
14:27Joe Johnson:He nice. But, Joe, also, Joe, I know how much you love Pick, and I know you want to play for your Cowboys. But in a sense, when you think about it, you have to take the emotion out of it. You have to take your heart out of it. You got to want the best for Pick. You got to want the best for Pick. Pickens to get his true value and what he deserves, it wouldn't be there. They franchise tag him for a reason. You know why they did that? Why's that? Because they didn't want to ruffle any feathers, paying him more than what he's worth because it would be more than what CeeDee Lamb is making. Allow him to flourish this season with you guys.
14:58Joe Johnson:This is a small window of opportunity for you guys to do the most you can and capitalize on having all the talent you do. Maybe you can have a long playoff run and maybe go to the Super Bowl, but don't Don't try to hog the man's presence. What is it? You can't undervalue him. You're undervaluing him.
Read the full transcript
15:15Shannon Sharpe:It ain't that they don't value him, Ocho. He's just been with us for one year. Damn, can we see something else? You're going to see it this year.
15:23Joe Johnson:Okay. Hold on. Listen to me. Listen to me. George Piggins is a$40,$44 million wide receiver. He has that kind of skill set. He brings that to a team. That's what his value is. Right? He's being underpaid this year, even though he's making 27. Chad, I mean no disrespect. I'm speaking in the NFL terms of the top receivers in the NFL on what he's making. That's all. That's all, Joe. So, listen, let Pig have his fun this year. He's going to go bananas this year. Okay? Jerry's not going to be able to afford it because you still got to pay that.
15:54Shannon Sharpe:Hold up. Hold up. Don't tell me what Jerry can't afford. Don't tell me that. Don't tell me what he can't afford. That man's pockets run deep. They deep. Joe, there's a salary cap, Joe. Damn that salary cap. We gonna make... Hey, hey, hey, hey, get picked one of them old Kawhi deals. You hear me? Allegedly, one of those Kawhi deals where you go to a dealership and you don't sign autographs. Yeah. That's another three million dollars. Jerry got a bunch of things going on in Dallas. He ain't just a football guy. Jerry worth a lot of money, so he got a lot of things going on. They find ways. Hey, Hey, CD, I got this old abandoned house over there.
16:35Shannon Sharpe:Really nice. Go check the mattress. A couple million fall up out of there.
16:41Joe Johnson:Hey, I got a question too, huh? Nope, not the turnover of ruffling any feather. Do you think stuff like that happens for elite players and there's a salary cap issue and they deserve more than what they get? You think they do that sometimes?
16:58Shannon Sharpe:They probably put stuff, they probably like, Most of the time, what they do is like, okay, I want a suite in my contract. You know what I'm saying? The big quarterbacks.
17:07Joe Johnson:Right.
17:08Shannon Sharpe:I bet you all the quarterbacks got a suite in their contract. Right. But they don't have to pay for it. But to that extent, the risk isn't worth the reward. Okay. But Roger Goodell would hammer you if you circumvented the salary cap. Right. All the other owners would want Roger to come down so hard on if he ever had done that. Right. Okay. Because remember what they did now when Washington, when they had that uncapped year and Washington lost, you know,$30 million, I think the Cowboys lost 20-something million in cap space. So they whittled your cap space down. Let's just say for the sake of argument, something of this magnitude where you circumvented the cap, which they did.
17:53Shannon Sharpe:Man, I can see now in today's term, they might take$50 million worth of cap space from you. What? Yeah.
17:59Joe Johnson:That would cripple your team and your chances to even come to you.
18:02Shannon Sharpe:That's the whole objective because you want punishment to be swift and harsh. It's not only for the team that did the act. It's to deter others from doing said acts. That's what punishment is meant to do. Punishment should be swift and harsh. And it should be a deterrent because what you want to do, you want it to be so harsh and so brutal that nobody else would even think about such. Because you know once you get away with something, don't you? Like you open the floodgates. You say it's a copycat league. Oh, yeah. Well, copy this punishment I'm going to put on y 'all ass. Yeah. I just think the thing is Joe Milton, 12 of 15, 107 yards, a touchdown.
18:41Shannon Sharpe:He looked really good. He did. Using them legs, getting outside the pocket, making plays. I thought he looked good, man. I just think the thing is, Melrose has to understand, the likelihood of you just run – you're not going to run your way to a chance. You're not going to run your way into a starting quarterback in the NFL. You've got to be able to throw the football because what the rules have allowed you to do Ocho Yes, you can't attack the quarterback like you once could you can't talk to receiver like you once could they Encourage you to throw the football, but a clock has to go off bro. You're not in practice This is not seven on seven where you can just pat the ball Yeah, I think you could just like oh, it's gonna be I'm like bro.
19:21Shannon Sharpe:What are you doing? It's a takeoff takeoff but he packed the ball man i was like bro that's too long i don't know what kind of clock they got to go in your head hey okay and he thinking he thinking his last result hell if he ain't got nobody open uncle ocho he can use them legs and go and get free yes yes yes yeah it
19:43Joe Johnson:wouldn't happen you know the funny thing about it too also joe when you have someone like that that has the arm talent that he does have he has to understand his value and being the asset for that team is being able to throw first. Being able to throw first and having legs on the back end if necessary is a great thing. And not running first. Lamar Jackson has gotten really good at this. Obviously, he did one read early in his career and take off if he's not there. Now he's getting to the point, listen, I'm going to extend the play. I'm going to make something out of nothing. That makes him that much more valuable.
20:14Joe Johnson:And he's improved as a passer. Yeah.
20:18Shannon Sharpe:Look at Caleb. Same thing. His ability to throw it. It's a nice asset to have to know I got that in my back pocket. You know what I'm saying? It's a nice, if I'm playing spades to know we already got three books, we only supposed to get four. And I got that big joke in my back pocket. It's always a great feeling to have. Everybody talking, oh, we about to set y 'all. But they don't know what I know. I got that big joker. I got that one that's on that bicycle, Joe. You know, he's sitting on that old big wheel bicycle. I'm good. I'm just letting them talk, letting them talk, Let them talk. Boy, we pulling teeth.
20:54Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, give me that. Give me that. Then all of a sudden, I go and flip him on the deck. Man, why'd you play the big? Whoa, whoa, why you need to worry about when I play the big Joker? You play your hand. Let me play mine. That quick to tell you, Joe. Man, why you play that earlier? Whoa, whoa, whoa. You not my partner? I have to offer you no explanations.
21:17Shannon Sharpe:But I thought both teams made some good plays. If guys stepped up, made some big-time catches, it's going to be really interesting to see. The Cowboys, like I said, if the Cowboys moving the ball like that on offense with those third and fourth, fifth guys, the offense should be really, really sharp. Once Dak, that starting offensive line, get in there, those other receivers, those top three receivers get in there, it's going to be interesting. Kevontae Turpin, he didn't play as your returner or your slot receiver. They can be really, really explosive. The question is, can they protect Dak? and Dak avoid the big mistake at the most inopportune time.
21:53Shannon Sharpe:If they do that, they have the potential to be special because they can put so much pressure on your defense, your offense with their offense. Remember, that's how Peyton Manning them used to do. Peyton Manning put so much pressure on your offense because you got to match him, Mocho. Mahomes, in his first couple of years, you had to match him. You already know. They're getting 30. Hey, off rip. So if you think you're going to win a game scoring 21 points, 17 points, and beat those teams, Yeah. That ain't happening.
22:21Joe Johnson:Go ahead, Ocho. You know, another thing I do like, too, also, you brought up the Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes. Will they ever get back to that level of creativity when they were so exciting in Patrick Mahomes' early years? You know, when they're winning Super Bowls back-to-back. I mean, obviously, they're still in the playoffs every year, but there was a time they was running plays, hey, Joe? I think there's over with it, Joe. That we ran in Optimus, and it was working. I think it's over with it, Ocho. You think so?
22:47Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, I do. The rest of the NFL done caught up high-up? Yeah, I think. I think the thing is they missed Tyreek because even though they got guys, they got speed, that's all they have. Right. You know, Xavier Worthy can run. They've had Tyquan Thornton. And I thought you and I, we were just like, hold on. Why did they go away from using Tyquan Thornton? Because when Rasheed Rice was out, you could make a case that he was their best receiver. So I didn't understand the lack of targets he got after Rasheed Rice got back. I'm not saying you shouldn't involve Rice because he's supposedly your number one receiver.
23:22Shannon Sharpe:So I'm not saying go away from him. But I'm not saying all of a sudden you see Thornton getting one target a game. Sometimes he was. I don't even know if he was even dressed. Right. Yeah. Which caught me back. But Tyreek, Tyreek, losing Tyreek, it forced him to be. If you think about Ocho, they was more methodical. It was all of a sudden, instead of three, five plays down the field, it was taking a 9, 11, 16. That was looking like a conventional offense. First, second down, get to third, pick it up. There was none of those plays, first down, second down, touchdown. There were no more of those type plays.
24:01Shannon Sharpe:And it's going to be interesting to see how that knee holds up because he had a very serious knee injury. And plus, a lot of their key guys got older. Trav is not the same guy. He's not the same. He's still a top five tight end. Right. But those days of him just taking the game completely over, I don't think we'll see that from him anymore. Hey, he ain't got that wiggle like he used to have. Hey, as you get older, it gets harder, Joe. It gets harder to stay like that. Yeah. I know. Yeah. I know. I know. But I like the running game. I like the running game. They didn't have K-9 tonight, But I thought those guys, Smith and the other guy, number 10, I thought they played really well.
24:46Joe Johnson:Yeah, Johnson ran real well.
24:48Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, yeah, yeah. I can live with that. I can live with it because they got to get their running game. Even though they've really never had a running game except that first Super Bowl, the one that they won, they had a running game. But outside of that, it's been Mahomes scrambling, picking up yards with his legs. They got a lot of gadgets. They do a lot of different things. They'll formation you to death. They'll run some gadgets. They'll run shovel pads. They'll run reverses. They do a lot of different things to complement their run game, which is their run game. You see the smoke screens. We used to call them jail breaks, but they call them smoke screens or whatever they call them now.
25:26Shannon Sharpe:That is their run game, Mocho. That is their run game. But they got to get some resemblance. They can't leave a game with 50 yards rushing and think they're going to win a large share of those games. That ain't happening. That's not happening.
25:38Joe Johnson:Yeah, I want to see Andy Reid get back in his bag, you know, with that creativity, those fun plays. Hey, Joe, I know you remember when the Chiefs would run all the trick plays and when they did the merry-go-round, the merry-go-round in the huddle. Yeah. The duck-duck goose and they go to the line and all those plays worked because it was different. You know, teams didn't know how to game plan for because they had never seen it before. I hope they can get back to that, especially with Mahomes coming off an ACL injury. The onus can't just be on him to do everything. No. It can't be on him. So everyone else has to show up.
26:17Joe Johnson:And obviously the play calling has to be a little bit more creative based on what they haven't seen before. So they always have an edge. They always had an edge with everybody else. But it seems like everyone has caught up to what they like to do.
26:30Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, but don't you – if you look at it, if you look at – they're like a tick off. Mahomes is not quite as sharp as he once was because he didn't miss deep throws. If you go back and look now, he's kind of missing those throws. Throws that he was hitting Tyreek on, that he was hitting Sammy Watkins on, that he was hitting Valdez Scandling on. He misses those throws now. And that third down, they were the number one team on third down, which keeps you on the field and gives you an opportunity to get three, four more downs. They're just a little off, and that is the difference because it don't take much.
27:13Shannon Sharpe:Just a little here and there. Where instead of being six of ten on third down, you're six of 12. Yeah. Now all of a sudden those two that you missed, when did you miss those third down conversions, Ocho? That's a big difference in the ballgame because now that could have kept me on the field. got me in field goal range or led me to a situation where I get a touchdown out of it. I think it's going to be interesting to see. I want to see what you want to see, Ocho. I want to see they got EB back. EB was the guy that held everybody accountable.
27:48Joe Johnson:Yeah, he on play.
27:50Shannon Sharpe:EB held everybody accountable. And people say, well, he couldn't do that. But no, no, no. His voice coming in, his voice is different in Kansas City than it was anywhere else. Yeah. So I expect them to be, and everybody was so excited to have him back. You hear Mahomes, you hear Trav, how they talk about how he held them accountable. That's what you got to have. You got to have somebody to hold the guys accountable. I think everything is dependent on Mahomes, bro. You know, him and that ACL injury, I don't know if he's going to be able to make it through the whole entire season, Uncle Ocho, without some way somehow bothering him.
28:28But you think about it, a couple years ago, damn. A couple years ago, they were barely winning games.
28:39Shannon Sharpe:Remember they winning all them close games? Yes, yes. Last year, it kind of caught up with them. It caught up with them, yes. It caught up with them. 32:14Shannon Sharpe:This year, I think it's going to be a little worse, fellas. I ain't going to lie to y 'all. You think so? Yeah, I do. I think he's the ran his course. That's just me, though. Yeah. Yeah, but Dallas ain't running his course, huh? Oh, man, come on, man. You notice that, Ocho? Everybody else that ran their course. Dallas ain't running their course yet, but okay. Hey, that's a good one. The Browns beat the Bears 34-10 Deshaun Watson in the first half. He was 11-15, 126 yards with a fumble. Deshaun did not throw a single pass that traveled 10-plus yards. He got sacked, fumbled the ball, the Bears recovered.
32:50Shannon Sharpe:Offensive line didn't seem very improved to me. Before we go to Shadua, let's talk about Deshaun. I don't know how much you saw this game, Ocho.
33:02Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, Deshaun, I mean, he was 11 or 15, but everything seemed like it was a damn check down. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. He didn't push the ball down the field. No. Hey, hold on, hold on, hold on. Y 'all got to give Deshaun a little credit, though, for a guy who hadn't played in some quite time, Uncle Ocho. He didn't look that bad. I thought he had a few miscues in the pocket to where he was unsure if he wanted to run or throw, which he kind of got tripped up. But outside of that, I thought he made some good throws, bro. I thought he used his legs well. He didn't look that bad to me. I thought she did look good outside that moon ball he threw.
33:36Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, it sailed on him. He got to drive that one. It seemed like he was trying to throw it with anticipation, and it kind of got away from him, but he needed to put some little oomph behind it. So the ball don't sell. You were in Soldier Field, so I don't know what type of win it had. But like I said, I thought Deshaun did 11 or 15. And I think people look at 11 or 15, but not a single ball traveled over 10 yards, Joe. So that means everything is close to the line of scrimmage. So you should have a nice completion percentage. Now, maybe that was what the game plan called for. Maybe they did a job and said, you know what?
34:06Shannon Sharpe:We want to get the ball out of Deshaun's hand. Offensive line is not where it needs to be. So what we're going to do is we're going to try to get the ball out of his hand.
34:13Joe Johnson:Go ahead, Ocho. I was going to say also defensively, knowing Deshaun is in there, defensively, make sure y 'all keep everything in front of you. Make sure you keep everything in front of you. So it was forcing anything that may have been deep for over 12 or 15 yards, you know, defensively they made sure, hey, it's not happening. He can go check it down or he can go hit something short.
34:32Shannon Sharpe:Well, considering the offensive line that he got, they ain't got to wait long to say, hey, don't worry about anything. We're going to get there before they – because they can't block. Hey, hey, but hold up, though. Concepcion, he look good out there, bro. Yeah. Hey, that boy making some plays. I think he's going to be really special. I think he has an opportunity to be really, really good, Joe. I do. Hey, he looks good. I'm talking about out the backfield and catching the ball. I'm saying, like, he a Swiss Army knife that I think the Browns are going to be able to use, man. He's going to help them out a lot.
34:59Shannon Sharpe:And he tough. Yeah. He tough. I like it. Look, like I said, we'll see. We'll see. Was this what the offense – because it seems to me like the one thing we know about Shadour. Shadour is going to try to push the ball down the field because that's where the big plays come from. The likelihood of you dumping the ball down on a five-yard route and the guy shaking the whole defense and getting to the house, that ain't very likely. No. Deshaun, so basically maybe he just took what the defense gave him. He didn't want to do anything spectacular. There was no throws to be made down the field. He got the ball out of his hand.
35:35Shannon Sharpe:The offensive line is going to have to improve greatly because if you think you can nickel and dime your way down the field consistently down in and down out, game in and game out, you're fooling yourself. The game has never been won like that, and it's never going to be won like that. Man, I think Deshaun, I think his problem was he didn't have a lot of patience in the pocket. Versus Shadour, he'll sit back there. You know what I mean? He'll wait for something to kind of open up a little bit. You know what I mean? I think that was the biggest difference because when Shadour got back to hell, his first two passes were deep.
36:07Shannon Sharpe:You know, they were nice. He's looking to push it down the field. yeah you know what i mean hey defense over route huh i say that that first pad that deep over route oh man he looked good them first couple passes bro then he had did one that just kind of sealed and got away from him but outside of that i don't think neither one of them really separated themselves from each other yeah i don't either the competition gonna continue and they just gotta keep you know going out there proving that they're worthy of that number one uh that starting job
36:32Joe Johnson:you know yeah you know what else people got to take it and especially people in the chat that to listen, you know what you have to take into account, that the play calling might change based on the quarterback that's under center. The play calling might change based on, you know, what they do well. You know, the coach knows that. Whoever's called plays knows that. Now, these plays in practice, you know, throughout this week, Deshaun looked good with these, and the coaches sit down with the quarterback to tell them, look, what you like? You know, first 10, 15 plays scripted. I'm sure they still do that in the preseason, too.
37:06Joe Johnson:You know, what you like is stuff that they're comfortable with, that they know that they look good, you know, in practice. And I only say that to say because when we would sit there with Tom, you know, and the receivers before the night before every game and I was there on Saturday, him and coach, they would go over eight. Give me your first 15 that you like, that you're comfortable with, and that's what we're going to stick with.
37:27Shannon Sharpe:Well, you know Deshaun is more athletic, more mobile than you're doing. Yes. So you call plays knowing that even if they're just dropped back, he has the ability to get out of harm's way. Right. So I can see you calling an offense where Deshaun is probably a little bit more on the move because of his athleticism. Yeah. Shadour is a drop back quarterback. I look, I understand. He black and you think it's like all black people can dance. No, they can't. All black people can cook. No, they can't. All black quarterbacks athletic. No, they're not. He a pure pocket passer. He's a pure, pure pocket passer.
38:09Shannon Sharpe:He's more Byron Lefkowitz than Lamar Jackson. Caleb Williams. That's not what he is. He's not Dante Cole. No, he's a prototypical dropback quarterback. He runs absolutely positively. positivity positivity you have no choice after thank you that's it Ocho when all else is fail I ain't got no choice yeah I'll take it off other than that nah let me find somebody throw this ball to and get this ball out of my hand and let you do the run and I'm gonna sit back here and cheer you once I put the ball in your hands but meanwhile Dylan Gabriel he need to go get his CDL it's over with yeah it's over with he didn't look hey hey i'm sorry man he didn't show me now i'm saying he was hitting the dirt quick you know he didn't want to get touched out there he's about a man i either either left-handed either they have big arms or them things
39:20Joe Johnson:yeah whack whack whack whack whack bam hey you know you know i'm glad i'm glad you said that because if you look at left-handed quarterbacks, you look at Michael Vick and then you look at everybody else. Man, come on, man. It's completely different. Michael Vick looks so, I'm just chilling and the ball come off his fingers like a shot out of cannon. Yeah.
39:47Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. Shadour Sanders played the third quarter. He had an overthrow and an interception. He was 6 of 11, 79 yards. One interception. Watson played the entire first half. Shadour played only one quarter. Let's take a listen to what Shadour had to say about the interception. What I see, the right read just slipped. You know, it was the right read. It just slipped. So that's what makes me be mad a little bit because of it. But, you know, any decision I make, I know it's the right decision. I just didn't execute the decision. but the right decision was made. So every day I look in and I see about decision making, like how's my decisions I'm making and that's how I grade myself off of.
40:40Obviously, turn the ball over and all that stuff is not great and it won't survive a long time in the league doing that. But as long as my eyes and my feet and everything was in the right place, being able to execute it, it just may happen. so I look at the positive of things you know I'm alive I'm breathing I'm able to come up here and talk to y 'all so you know I can't be that down
41:08Shannon Sharpe:what you mean bless you thank you that look like Ebola
41:17Shannon Sharpe:hey Jordy get that pie Joe what do all people say boy get that pie song Well, they put Piesol on everything. No, but the way they're asking the question, like he was covered. The guy was open. The ball just sailed on him. He was wide-ass open. He said the ball slipped. The ball got away from him. Hey, man, it's hard not to like that young man, bro. I mean, the accountability that he shows every interview. You know, and when he makes mistakes, he's tried not to make the, you know, the same mistake over and over. I just enjoy watching him go out there and compete. But I thought it was a great battle between him and Deshaun today.
41:59Shannon Sharpe:I thought Deshaun looked great. Chedot had some great flashes outside of that interception. I thought he was all right. Yeah. I mean, think about it. This is Deshaun's first game back off of an injury. He missed all of last year. He missed, what, probably 10 games the year before, played sparingly the year before that, missed the first 11 games the year before that. So he hasn't played a whole lot of football. I'm not so sure he's played a whole season in the last five years. If you combine all the games that he's played, I'm not so sure, Ocho. He's played 17 games since he's been in Cleveland.
42:36Shannon Sharpe:And he definitely hasn't played 17 games continuous. They've been kind of chopping up five here, seven here, eight there. Yeah. With that being said, hey, but I think in order for them, the offensive line is going to have to get a lot better than what they've shown today, and you're going to have to push the ball down the field. Deshaun is going to probably be more apt to use his legs. Shadour is going to be more apt to try to get the ball out as quick as he possibly can, knowing that athleticism of being able to – he's a pocket mover. Yeah. I stepped to the side, Ocho. Yeah. He got what they call phone boot quickness.
43:16Shannon Sharpe:It's a very limited area in which he's quick. He ain't trying to go side to side and do all that other stuff. That ain't what he is. Understand who you are, understand what you are, and get on. But we're going to find out. Adam Shepter reported that the next game, Shadour was supposed to start with the ones. We'll see how that is. There was a situation where Shadour was supposed to go with the ones, and that didn't happen. So we'll find out next week what Schefter reported, if that's true. Dylan Gabriel. First drive that included a pick, five of eight, 22 yards, one interception, two sacks. He just tried to do long handoffs.
44:04Shannon Sharpe:That man got eight attempts for 22 yards. Joe, I mean, what the hell is that? Hey, that mean he ain't waiting for nothing to open up here. He trying to get a thing out of his hands. Hell no. Because he said y 'all tried to open me up. I'm like, damn. Hey, man. Yeah, I know. It didn't look great for Dylan Gabriel tonight. It didn't look good last year. You're absolutely right, y 'all. But it's the first game, man. Let's be real. Let's be real, champ. Hey, you got to look at who he was out there with, too, now. He wasn't out there with no first, second string of hair. He probably was out there with the third and fourth string guys, guys who are going to be working at Home Depot here, you know, after the preseason.
44:45Shannon Sharpe:He keep playing like that, he'll be their manager.
44:52Shannon Sharpe:Hey, he'll be having a UPS or a FedEx truck if he ain't careful. I mean, the man had 22 yards on five completions. Think about it. That's four yards of completion. Ain't nothing but check downs. You can't win no game like that.
45:11Shannon Sharpe:I didn't get it. Nothing. I get Dylan Gabriel. He played at Oregon. But it's hard for me to see a scenario. If I'd have put him at Colorado, he'd have been built with the same weapons. No way. He'd have been better at Colorado than Shadour. And if I put Shadour with Oregon in that talent, it's hard for me to see that he wouldn't have been as good, if not better, than Dylan Gabriel. Come on. I think we all can see that considering the fact that Shadour still led the NCAA in completion. And he still threw, like, damn, what, 35, 36, 30-something touchdowns? Come on, man. Y 'all know that man with a damn fifth-round pick.
45:59Shannon Sharpe:So I'm just – that was not – that left a lot to be desired. That left a lot to be desired for Dylan Gabriel. I mean, he could be the third quarterback, but I can see a situation where they release him and then try to bring him back on the practice squad. Dylan? Well, they still got the – They got the Arkansas kid. Yeah, Taylor Green. Yeah, he more of a project. Yeah. And I can see them trying to stash him and see if they can make because he has supreme athleticism. Yeah. For me, that kind of athleticism, it doesn't really equate to playing that position. If he's that wide receiver, Joe, to be able to run that fast, to jump that high, I say, hey, if I don't do nothing but ask Ochoa to put his ass on the goal line and make him do a jump ball, high point it.
46:54Shannon Sharpe:Doug Brug had like 42-inch vertical. Oh, yeah. He's 6 '6".
46:58Joe Johnson:Hey, you got to be careful now. You know them boys, especially them starting corners, Oh, they're going to press his ass now. They're going to press him, and the sideline is your friend. All that vertical is real easy when ain't nobody in front of you.
47:13Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. Yeah. But, oh, all I'm going to try to do is say, look here, son, all I'm going to do is, hey, just get to the end zone. I'm going to throw it until you jump up. That's it. That's all. Now, I ain't finna put him out there in the field of play because you're right. He's a big-ass target. And big targets, you press. Now, unless you Megatron or you T.O. or Julio that have played that position and know how to play through contact, everybody doesn't – he's going to have to learn. He would have to learn. I give a prime example, Terrell Pryor. Yeah. Terrell Pryor. They moved Terrell Pryor from quarterback to wide receiver, and he went and got 1 ,000 yards.
47:52Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. Good example. Good example. So, hey, I understand. I want to play – me, they're like, I always dreamed of playing quarterback. I ain't dreamed of playing nothing. I dreamed of playing in the NFL. So if it was a wide receiver, tight end, linebacker, I don't give a damn what it was. That's what my dream. I didn't have a specific dream about a specific position. My dream was to play in the NFL. Joe, I know you say, hey, man, I want to play in the NBA. You didn't care if you was a point guard or two guard or three or four or five or six, whatever they need. Hey, hey, I'm a hooper, Unc. It don't matter what damn position you put me in.
48:28Shannon Sharpe:you know what I'm saying? I'm going to make something happen. You want me to play the point? You want me to facilitate get guys involved? Or you want me to do, you want me to score this thing? Huh? Put some pressure on the defense? Yeah. I can do a little bit of everything. Hey, I'm a hooper, man. You put me in the game, coach. I promise I'm going to make some plays. That's it. That's it. So we'll see how this thing play out. They got two more games before they have to make some decisions. But they're going to make some decisions. They'll make the decision. They won't do any major cutting. any major cuts before the third preseason game.
49:01Shannon Sharpe:When you're moving like I do, trips don't always come together weeks in advance. Sometimes production shoots, interviews, or something I've got to travel for on a short notice. 52:29Shannon Sharpe:KC's conception looked real good as a weapon, both passing games and special teams. Scored on a jet sweep touchdown. A true, true Swiss Army 9. I like him. I thought he was unbelievable in college last year. I know it didn't end the way he wanted it to because Texas A &M kind of got manhandled.
52:49Shannon Sharpe:But he was phenomenal. He was phenomenal all year. He looked good out there today, man.
52:56Joe Johnson:He's going to be nice. He's going to be nice. Now, the only issue is, too, especially as comfortable and as good as he looks so far, I want to make sure he understands how difficult it's going to be week to week when you're facing that one and that two.
53:13Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, yeah.
53:14Joe Johnson:Facing that one and that two. It's a different ball game, Joe.
53:17Shannon Sharpe:But hold on. They got other weapons, Ocho, that a one or two may not even be on him. Oh, he going to get one of the two. Unless he take his ass in the slot. If he outside the numbers, he going to get one of the two. One of the two, yeah. Yeah. And I think the hardest thing is, is that because each corner is different. Each corner brings something different. Some people like to be handsy. Some like to play off. They like the clue. Some people, they'll freeze you. Some people, they say it. So it all depends. So you got to constantly even during the course of the game, whether you're going against one, two, three or four, it doesn't matter.
53:50Shannon Sharpe:You have to like, OK, this is what this guy likes to do, especially in this area of the field. This down in distance. This is how he likes to play. This guy likes to play like this. and you got to constantly think, all the while thinking, man, I got to get to 10 and get my damn head around. I got to get to 12 and get my head around. All that, there's a chess match going on. I don't think people sometimes realize. They think we just going out there, Ocho, just getting open. No, you got to think. Joe, you know this. Hey, different guys, Sean Marion might play you one way. T.A. might play you another way.
54:23Shannon Sharpe:Pat Bev might play you another way. All the while, what quarter is it? Is it the first quarter, second quarter, third? quarter. Okay. How much time is on the clock? Right. What's the, what's the, the ball game? How close are we, is it a one point game? Is it a two point game? Is it a 10 point game? All that factors in all that you're thinking about all the things that I got to do. But the most important thing I got to do is get my black ass open. All that other stuff. So you say, son, what you doing? Get, get a, oh, they quit. Get going. Go, go, go. I'm going But I'm thinking about how to set this dude up.
55:03Joe Johnson:Hey, I call it quick but not in a hurry. Quick but not in a hurry. And Joe, chat as well. You got to think. We always talk about the it factor. You look at players. Everybody's fast, big, strong, tall, whatever it may be. Whatever it may be. But the thing that separates you is up here. Because the game is 90 % mental. 90 % mental and 10 % suitable for all your attributes. whatever makes you special, you know, it comes into play. But the smarter you are up here and you're able to process things really, really fast and having a plan and being able to read and react, because sometimes whatever your plan is, it might change when the ball snaps.
55:41Joe Johnson:It might change when a dude, you know, he's playing head up and he's sliding inside. So to be able to still move at a fast pace and be able to read and react on the fly, man, that's what makes some of the greats, the best at what they do.
55:55Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, and all the while, Lucho, knowing that he's inside and you got to end breaking route. What kills me, if the guy jumps inside, all of a sudden you give up and the quarterback throws the ball and you hit the DB right in the chest and everybody looking at the quarterback. No, this mofo gave up on the route. Yeah, yeah. You never, if you got to cross that guy's face, you got to get across his face or break that ball up. Yeah. You're taught to get across his face. The defense is taught never to let someone cross your face. I'm like, damn. It just bothered me. Maybe I'm just too hard on people.
56:35Shannon Sharpe:I ain't no sense to be lying, Joe. I'm just too hard on people. Hey, hold on. But as a quarterback, when that happens, Ocho and a guy don't fully run his route here, he'd be reluctant to throw it to his ass again. Yeah, yeah. You kill him off because no matter what happens, Right. Who does that interception go to, Ocho? The quarterback. They can hit you in the hands and pop up in there. They ain't got no – Ocho got 10 touchdowns and two interceptions. They don't put that on Ocho's resume. That go to the quarterback. Quarterback, yeah. He's like, you effing up my stats.
57:07Joe Johnson:Yeah. Yeah. Hey, you know what, too? I talked to – when I had a receiver camp, and that's one thing that always came up is DB – I mean, receivers always ask me what happens when a DB lines up inside and I have to go outside and I have a certain route and it's an in-breaking route and he's lined up inside. I tell him, man, listen, don't sit there and play around with him. Get to your spot within the same time in the offense and just you got to hug it. You got to hug it. Leave him on the backside of your hip. Leave him on your hip. Leave him on the backside of your hip and just get to point A, from point A to point B as fast as you can.
57:43Joe Johnson:Let him sit in there because he has plans land. You know where you're going. he don't know where you're going.
57:48Shannon Sharpe:A lot of times where he starts to line up inside, he says because of the split that you're giving him. Sometimes line up a little wider to throw him off. Yeah. He know when you got a damn tight split. Oh, yeah. What the hell you think? You making sense, man, he ain't studied no damn tape. You're the only one that had to practice this week. He studied too. Hell, he getting a check? But I was constantly playing with my split. hey, Mike says I don't give a damn how you, he said you know what if you want to, you the slot, if you want to line up outside of Ed or Ron, as long as you be where you're supposed to be when that quarterback back foot hit I don't give a damn I'm constantly playing with my hey, I'm getting to my
58:33Joe Johnson:spot, I know that much but also, you know, all players don't have the freedom to do that, you were able to do that because you were consistent at what you do Joe, sometimes I I have a dig route, and we'll be in the third quarter. I done ran the dig two times already. So, you know, for us, Joe, the dig is two yards outside the numbers. That's what the climate is. After I done ran it two times, I come down. I come down to the inside of the numbers and widen the split. And stem it out. And stem it out and make it think of something else. But I still end up in the same place at the same time.
59:06Shannon Sharpe:That's all that matters. Yeah. But you got to – it's hard to play receiver without imagination, without creativity. Because if you robotic and all you do is the same thing, you're basically wearing black and gray every damn route, they're going to pick that up.
59:21Joe Johnson:Yeah, it ain't going to work.
59:23Shannon Sharpe:Hell nah. Ben Johnson said, Y receivers coach Antoine Randall L called plays in the second half versus the Browns today. Chicago scored 24 points and put up 235 yards of offense. This is his opportunity to be an offensive coordinator and eventually move up to be the head coach. I like that by Ben Johnson. I like – because a lot of times, sometimes they don't give you chances. Yes. Sometimes they don't give you chances. Somebody had to give Ben Johnson a chance. Roll it forward. Now he's giving somebody else a chance. I can rock. Excuse me. I can rock with this. I can rock with this. Because he's paid his dues as a wide receiver coach.
1:00:06Shannon Sharpe:It's time to move up now. I ain't trying – I mean, there's some coaches, Ocho and Joe, They okay with being a lifetime linebacker coach or a lifetime D-line or O-line coach. But I don't think Antoine, I don't think that's what he aspires to be. I think he says, I can be much more than this. Yes, I can still offer insight at the wide receiver position, but I can be an OC. I can be a head coach. He's put his time in. I like this. He was a really good receiver. He was a jack receiver when he was at Pittsburgh. He'd catch the ball. He'd run the ball. He'd throw the ball. Remember he threw that touchdown in the Hines in the Super Bowl?
1:00:42Shannon Sharpe:He was a quarterback in Indiana. I was going to say that. He was a quarterback in Indiana. Yeah. But he said, this is what Ben Johnson said. I think he has a chance to be an OC in this league, and I think he has a good chance to be a head coach in this league. Ben Johnson, I would agree. Yeah. I would agree. The question is, you believe in that, and unfortunately you're not a general manager of another team. Somebody's going to give him an opportunity to do that. Right. you got to think how many opportunities have they had to be off no i mean the thing is because you say they they say they we know who they are owners general managers say they want somebody that'll call plays before but we see them time and time again take people from shanahan staff and they don't call plays kyle shanahan call plays they'll take they'll take guys from a mcveigh staff, McVay call plays.
1:01:36Shannon Sharpe:They'll take guys from LeFleur. He calls the plays. O 'Connell calls the plays. Zach Taylor calls the plays. I ain't got no problem. I don't have a problem saying, you know what, Ocho? If you say, I want somebody that had previous experience and then you go get somebody that does not have experience, you don't understand why I might be looking at you sideways?
1:02:04Shannon Sharpe:I mean, if we're hiring people, say, you know what? We're looking for EPs. We're looking for producers. We're looking for editors. We're looking for graphic designers. But we're looking for somebody to have previous experience. Okay, all these people apply. And they got previous experience. And then we hire somebody that didn't have experience. You can understand why somebody's like, well, I thought you said you wanted to be somebody that has done this before.
1:02:25Joe Johnson:Right. All talk. And that's it.
1:02:29Shannon Sharpe:That's it. You know, I want somebody, you know, I want somebody's experience. before you don't drop it you get dropped you know i'm saying a little previous experience with that that's all that's all that don't make me no bad brother no it don't no you don't know don't make me no bad brother you want somebody who know what they doing yeah i ain't saying you got to twerk in public but you know behind closed doors let me see you let me see let me see that thing hydraulic Hey, you ain't got to, you know, hey, on our wedding night, you ain't got to twerk in your gown, but I'm saying. Right, right, right, right.
1:03:07Joe Johnson:Listen, I'm picking up what you're putting down now.
1:03:10Shannon Sharpe:Man, come on, now. But, no, I thank Antoine Randallel. Congratulations, and I want to send a shout out to Ben Johnson for giving him this opportunity. Yes, sir. I understand it's the preseason, but, hell, he got to get some things. He got to get a win. Got to take his wins wherever he can get them. The Vikings defeated.
