In short

Episode topic: Summer League debuts and NBA roster moves—Utah’s Darren Peterson, Sacramento’s Darius Acuff, the Lakers trading DeAndre Ayton to Washington, and Patrick Ewing joining the Wizards as assistant coach.

Guest backgrounds

The episode features hosts “Uncle Ocho” and “Joe” (basketball talk hosts). No additional guest is interviewed in the provided transcript.

Key claims

  • Darren Peterson’s Jazz Summer League debut (28 points, 5 rebounds, 11/21 FG, 4/7 from three) proves he’s poised and comfortable, with elite tools (pick-and-roll, midrange, rim pressure, defense).
  • Darius Acuff (Kings Summer League debut: 25 points, 4 assists, 2 rebounds) stands out for conditioning and comfort under pressure; he’ll be a primary offensive engine.
  • NBA teams do extensive character/medical diligence due to guaranteed top-pick money; “red flags” can’t be ignored.
  • Ayton’s trade (to Wizards for Jaden Hardy + two second-round picks) is framed as a “lights too bright”/motivation issue; Washington’s big lineup could unlock him.

Notable examples

  • Comparisons to draft “guesswork” (Jordan vs Olajuwon; Shaq vs AI).
  • Contract-year effort and quarterback analogy for franchise risk.
  • Mention of Bengals offseason surveillance and FBI-style due diligence.

Darren Peterson went crazy in his Jazz Summer League debut. 28 points, 5 rebounds, 11 of 21, 4 of 7 from the 3. Joe, did the Jazz hit the lotto with the Peterson, or is it just Summer League? Nah, they got a great pick, Uncle Ojo.

5:42Chad Johnson:I think Darren Peterson, obviously, you know, he's been criticized because of the cramping thing, taking themselves out of the game, only playing, what, 23, 25 games of college. But listening to this young man talk, Arcan Ocho, he's here to prove people wrong. You know, and I watched him play today, man. I'm talking about the poise and patience that the young man plays with. Obviously, we know how gifted he is athletically, but how he plays in between the three-point line and the rim, middies, getting to the basket, shooting the three, defending at a high level. The sky's the limit for this kid, bro.

6:16Chad Johnson:He look good today. He probably, hey, hey, when you think about it, okay, Ocho, he probably put on the best performance today out of all the rookies.

6:25Shannon Sharpe:No doubt. I think the thing is, sometimes you stumble into a situation because it would have been very, very interesting had Utah had the number one pick. Right. Do they go? Nah, you know where they go. Take DeBonza or do they take Darian Peterson? Darian Peterson. because the Wizards took the guesswork out of their hands.

6:48Chad Johnson:Yeah.

6:49Shannon Sharpe:You ain't have no choice.

6:50Chad Johnson:Nah.

6:51Shannon Sharpe:You ain't have no choice. See, I need to have you – I need to put you into a dilemma where it's two – Dilemma, Webster defined dilemma as two equally perplexing situations. Yeah. You get hit by a dump truck or you get hit by a Mack truck, both going 55 miles an hour.

7:07Chad Johnson:Yeah.

7:08Shannon Sharpe:The situation's going to sink. So now I need Utah to be in a situation where they have the first pick. And now we'll see, are we taking DeBonza, who went to prep school here, who went to college here, or are we taking Darren Peterson? We know he's a known bucket. We know he's elite. He just has some issues that caused us to pause. So I don't really think they have a choice. I don't really think it. I think the two number one overall, it was between Peterson and DeBonza. I don't really think, you know, you hear others say, well, Cameron Booth, and he does have a grown man NBA body. But I don't really think he was ever considered for the number one or the number two pick, Joe.

7:47Shannon Sharpe:I think between those two guys, DeBonza and Peterson. That's just me personally, Ocho. Yeah. I mean, you're right. Obviously, Summer League is a small, small size of what you can do after leaving college. And even though it's not the best players, not the best of the best in the NBA, once you can get a tail, you can get a feel on how someone's going to adjust at the next level. Joe, correct me if I'm wrong, especially when it comes from college to the NFL, you know, in football, the difference is the first thing players say is the speed of the game is much different. The game is much faster. I'm not sure if it's like that when it comes to basketball as well.

8:22What do you think?

8:23Chad Johnson:Yeah, it is like that. It's more so, Ocho, can these guys get out here and can they look comfortable, you know, playing in the NBA, playing in the summer league because you got guys fighting for contracts. So you got guys out here playing hard as I don't know what against these top picks. You know what I mean? So they're getting the best defense. So for me, when I watched Darren Peterson today, how he ran the pick and roll, how patient he was. He wasn't sped up. And when he did speed up, Uncle Ocho, he was getting to whatever he wanted to. Like, he didn't seem uncomfortable to me out there. He seemed like he was right at home.

8:56Chad Johnson:So with that being said, I think he has so many tools in his toolbox, bro. The sky's the limit for this kid. If Utah can really put it together, man, they can really have something special in the next couple years because they got the talent. You just got to hope that talent meshes together.

9:13Shannon Sharpe:And that's what I said. I'll give you a prime example, 84. It would have been very interesting to see if Chicago Bulls have the number one overall pick. Are they taking Michael Jordan or are they taking Akeem Olajuwon? You see, the two other teams took the guesswork out of their hands. They took Olajuwon. The Rockets took Olajuwon. and the Trailblazers took Sam Bowie. So now I need you to make a decision. Oh, we had a guy. And I think Rod Thorne, I think he was the general manager at the time that selected Michael Jordan. I would have liked to see the situation, Joe. They have the number one overall pick and then select Michael Jordan.

9:51Shannon Sharpe:It's easy to say hindsight. They should have taken him. It's easy to say that because you have the ability. Hindsight is a perfect science. You have the knowledge of knowing today what you didn't know yesterday.

10:03Chad Johnson:And the game was played a lot different back then, Uncle Ocho, meaning you played inside out back then. It wasn't perimeter heavy like it is nowadays. No, no, no, no.

10:14Shannon Sharpe:You played through the big inside out. You're right, Joe. Oh, yeah.

10:16Chad Johnson:To be able to come across a big like Hakeem, no, Chicago would have drafted him first if they had the number one pick to him.

10:22Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. Because you had a Kareem, and you had Robert Parrish, and you had Moses Malone. Teams had bigs, and you had to account for that. That's why you saw a run on bigs back then. I mean, everybody was taking bigs. I mean, then all of a sudden we got AI in 96. Yeah. But hey, okay. But it would have been interesting to see if there's a legit big in that draft. Is he going, or do you take AI? Shaq, let's just say for the sake of argument, Shaq's in that draft. You taking Shaq or you taking AI? You taking Shaq, most definitely. Oh, man. And see, that's what I'm saying. People are like, well, they made a mistake.

11:02Shannon Sharpe:It's easy to say somebody made a mistake based on now, but you don't have that. You don't know. You're basing everything on a projection. Right. And for Utah, Utah's like, he fell in your lap. I mean, the most beautiful apple is way up there high. and the wind, you can't reach it. But all of a sudden, the gust of wind comes and blows it off. He's like, damn, it just landed in my damn hands.

11:26Chad Johnson:Yeah, yeah. I didn't have to do nothing.

11:28Shannon Sharpe:They didn't have to do anything because they said, you know what? We're going to get a great player in the second spot. Either we're getting DeBonza or we're getting Peterson.

11:39Chad Johnson:Absolutely. That's the way they looked at it. Hey, but when you look at it, I know Peterson played great today, but A.J. is going to be special too, you know. So I absolutely agree. I can't wait to see his debut. And when he gets out there on the court, I think he's going to put up monster numbers. I'm telling y 'all, man, he is the prototypical guy of the NBA right now. 6 '9", can do everything. Can do everything. Handle the rock, can play, make, can score, shoot the three, play in the mid post, great footwork, make guys around him better. Yeah. I'm taking him one if I got the first pick. I ain't going to lie to you.

12:15Chad Johnson:I think he's that special. But I think this draft class is that special too. It's a lot of guys who, man, I really look forward to see play.

12:22Shannon Sharpe:I agree with you, Joe. I think a lot of times, Ocho, you know in football, they're like, okay, yeah, we want a guy that's really, really good. But at the end of the day, I want to be able to put my phone down and go to sleep at night. There you go. No, I had nothing to worry about. Hey, general manager, Ocho. Hello? Yeah, Ocho, what's going on, man? You sleep? Yeah, what's going on? Man, such and such got pulled, got arrested tonight. Huh? For what? They don't, teams don't want to deal with that. Nope. Nope. When you tie it up and you look at the money, the top pick, A.J. DeBonga is going to get$69 million.

13:03Shannon Sharpe:Ooh. Fully guaranteed. Then you see Mendoza, he's getting$60 million and so forth and so on. And so now, even with the NFL, every first round pick money is guaranteed. Yeah. The entire contract is guaranteed the first four years because now we can pick up the fifth year option and then that becomes protected against everything except injury. And so now teams are going to be really, really, really conscious because they don't want their fan base. And it's a lot different now. The media is going to hammer you because they knew you had these red flags. I get Justin Blackman, Ocho. Everybody said, hold on, bro.

13:39Shannon Sharpe:How y 'all took this man and y 'all knew he had all these red flags? Yeah. Hey, one thing about it, boy. he was so good they ignored the red flags hey hey listen and let me tell you something uncle joe now most of the time many of us have made the mistake when it when we're not gms and we're not part of business business decisions yeah we've made mistakes and we saw red red flags and certain people in real life oh yeah yeah and we gave him a pass based on who it was whatever whatever the situation may be so i can understand how they made that mistake go ahead but see and the thing is is that hopefully the the the mistake isn't so great that because if you make the mistake at the quarterback position it sits you back three five years yeah yeah other positions also you can move on readily easy you make a mistake a mistake at a running back or wide receiver any other position right it's that one position that is your foundation he's your foundational piece you make a mistake at him yeah oh you sit back for a minute oh yeah that's what you got money tied up in because he's the first overall pick so now you're looking at probably 65 a 10 raise Next year, if he's the number one overall pick, let's just say it's Arch Manning.

14:46Shannon Sharpe:That's$66 million that you got guaranteed. No matter what. No matter what. No matter what. He can be good or he can be bad. But you got$66 million tied up in him.

14:56Chad Johnson:And that's why they do these extensive looks in these guys going way back to high school and junior high. Yes. Because, man, it's hard for these teams to invest all this money nowadays. and you got all these flaws and character issues, they not willing to deal with that, bro. If I draft you and I'm paying you$70 million, $50 million,$40 million as a rookie and you ain't played a game. NBA, NFL, come on, bro. Last thing I want is a damn character issue. You know what I mean? And we're hoping as we've gotten older,

15:33Shannon Sharpe:Ocho, you and our grandfather, hopefully, Joe, one day you'll become a grandfather. All right. We realized we were at that age, one time we were young and did some dumb things. Yeah. Was it one or two, or was it a continuation? And then how dumb were the things? Was it something that, yeah, it was, hey, okay, pulling a fire alarm, okay, rolling someone's house with toilet paper, egg in someone's house, knocking people's mailbox down with your forearm as you drive by. Damn, he was bad as hell. Oh, damn. Oh, man, statute of limitations though. Man, that's old. Man, that's 40 years old, hey. So you're looking at a situation, okay.

Read the full transcript

16:20Shannon Sharpe:How much, and then, okay, he was like this in high school and that's where it stopped. But damn, he was like this in high school and there was a continuation in college. yeah and then you got to roll the dice yeah is he a late bloomer is he one of these guys some guys mature 15 16 17 some guys mature 18 19 20 yeah some guys mature 22 23 24 thanks some guys never mature so which one am i which one am i getting oh jojo what what what am i getting because, man, to invest $70 million in a guy, you're asking a franchise to... They do their due diligence now because a lot of these, they work for the FBI.

17:13Shannon Sharpe:You go back and look at your team. They got to form FBI agents. So they do their homework. So you think they don't know? Oh, they know. They know everything. You know it's funny too, Uncle Joe, I think a lot of people especially fans, a lot of people in the chat, I don't think people understand, not only do they do their homework before they invest in you, before they draft you, before they pay you tens of millions of dollars, right? Once you get drafted, they know exactly what you're doing in the offseason.

17:40Chad Johnson:Yeah. I'm going to use the Bengals as an example. Jamarche, Joe Burrow, T. Higgins, let's say Dexter Lawrence, for example. When they're not in Cincinnati and they're flying around, having a good time doing whatever they do, you know everybody that's part of the Bengals organization know exactly what they're doing. They know exactly who they're hanging out with, Joe. They know exactly move. They know exactly how much you're spending. They know exactly who you fucking is sleeping with. Chat, they know everything. It's so funny, and you would never know it. You would never know it. I done went back in the off-season.

18:14I done spent the off-season down in Miami two, three months. I done went back to Cincinnati for the off-season program. Man, they done ran down everything I done did.

18:21Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. Yeah. I didn't even have social media back then. Yeah. They know your kids in school. They told me everything I done did. Like what are we talking about? Ocho, they know how much you pay in child support. They know how much your mortgage is. They know your kids in private school.

18:36Chad Johnson:Facts.

18:36Shannon Sharpe:They can tell you, you know what? Your mom had an eviction in 1986. Yeah. You also have forced speeding tickets. Mm-hmm. They can tell you all of that. They're going to tell you everywhere you've lived along the way. Now, they just want you to tell them, like, okay, we can trust him because he's telling us what we already know. Because they're looking at the sheet, so they're asking you, posing you questions. It's just like when them people come sit down in your car, when the FBI come, just go ahead and invite them in. You want a thing to drink, sir? Because they ain't just come out of no accident.

19:10Shannon Sharpe:They ain't accidentally come to your house. So they've done their due diligence. And so you're just hoping we're getting a guy that was young, made young mistakes, but he's ready to take that next level and be mature. He's going to be the person that we hope and we think he can become because we're about to invest a lot of money in him. And hopefully Darren Peterson, look, he has some issues. He said we're cramping. He was taking creatine. I'm shocked that his trainers didn't tell him, son, if you take creatine, you got to drop an asshole. however much water you think you're drinking, you need to drink more.

19:46Shannon Sharpe:Because it's going to pull all the muscle, all the water out of your muscles. And that's what's going to cause you to cramp. So I'm surprised they didn't tell him that, Joe. But hey, that was a situation where, hey, maybe they didn't, maybe they did, or maybe they didn't. He didn't know you're young. You know, you think you know everything when you're young anyway. But hopefully this young man has, because he looked phenomenal today. Oh, man.

20:10Chad Johnson:Oh, man.

20:10Shannon Sharpe:Because he can get to any spot that he want to. Yeah. And like you said, some of these guys are – Ace Bailey came in last year, so he's getting more reps. It's like, okay, we want to see you some more. Some of these guys are trying to get contracts. Maybe they're a two-way contract. Maybe they're a 10-day contract. I'm trying to show you something. So, obviously, it's not no – you don't see no – Shea and all your top 15, 20 guys in the NBA there. But these guys are fighting, trying to get a job in the league.

20:39Chad Johnson:Amen. It's some talent. Look, Utah got some talent, Ocho. They got some talent to where I don't know where they'll be this year fighting in that tough Western Conference, but in the next two to three years, man, they should be atop of the Western Conference, bro. They got a bunch of talent over there, a bunch of young guys who finding their way. I like the Keontae George kid. Hell, I like your average about 22, 23 a game this year. He did. And if you can add Peterson to this group and he can play above his maturity, then, yeah, you can take leaps and bounds a lot faster. So I look forward to seeing Peterson, man, continue, bro.

21:18Chad Johnson:I think he pissed off he didn't go number one. Okay, Ojo, and I think he's going to come out and try and show and prove that he was the best player in this draft. That's a good thing.

21:30Shannon Sharpe:I was one of the first ones to really start taking that creatine back in the day. Yeah. Oh, yeah. I was in the mid-'90s. we was on it you know EAS was a supplement company out of there and they had these products and we and the thing is the thing the first thing that my trainer told you know Greek Steve Antonopoulos Steve Antonopoulos he's like Sharper you got to drink a lot of water he said because you're already muscular and you'll pull if you don't yeah and it will make you cramp I mean I was drinking I mean back then my kidney you know my bladder was this big I drank a whole gallon and a half I had two gallons of water, pee two times the whole day.

22:10Shannon Sharpe:Boy, I drank a gallon of water right now. I'm just going to stand in the bathroom. I ain't laying down for what? Yeah. Because I'm going to get up every two, three minutes, yo. Hey, Unc, what'd that creatine do? It put a little weight on you. It put a little muscle on you. It puts a weight on you, yeah. So why y 'all ain't telling me I can take me some creatine? But you ain't going to drink enough water, Ocho. You'll be going to hurt yourself.

22:30Chad Johnson:Yeah, you going to drink that creatine on top of that coffee here? We're going to have to go find you some damn well. Hey, so it won't help at all though a little bit? It may help. I ain't gonna lie. I didn't take it until I got to college, Ocho. When I got to college with my little thin frame, they was like, oh, nah, we got to put some muscle on you. You got to drink this creatine. I'm like, damn, creatine? What the hell is this? This shit was nasty. Wait, Joe, you were small at one point? I wasn't small. I probably came into college -

22:57Shannon Sharpe:He was always tall, Ocho. He was just thin.

23:00Chad Johnson:Yeah, I was thin. I probably came into college, Ocho. I probably about 215-ish. You know what I'm saying? And Joe, that's big as hell, Joe.

23:07Shannon Sharpe:But you gotta realize how tall he is, Ocho. Oh, okay, yeah, yeah, I'm tripping, I'm tripping. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

23:11Chad Johnson:And he right around here looking like stick man. And, right, and the position I had to play in college, you know, it was like four or five-ish, really. You know, I had to play under the goal pretty much. Right. So, yeah, to play against dudes three, four years older than me in the SEC, I had to beef up a little bit. Okay, okay, okay.

23:28Shannon Sharpe:But a lot of the weight that you put on with creatine is water weight. Yeah. Because it makes you hold water. Yeah. But when you work out properly, but you got to, you know, the thing is that when you're young, you can train. That's why you get those gymnasts and how they have to train and these young athletes, how they have to train, it's easy. Body just bounce back like it ain't nothing. As you get older and older, you really get harder and harder for you to train like that. Back to back to back to back because that's how you evolve. That's how you get better. You're able to train consistently at that pace, at that intensity and the frequency.

24:11Shannon Sharpe:See, that's what it is. It's the intensity and the frequency. Yeah. As we get older, had to back that thing down. I had to learn the hard way.

24:19Chad Johnson:I was like, man, why can't I?

24:20Shannon Sharpe:Because every time I was still thinking in my mind, well, hell, man, look at your boy.

24:25Chad Johnson:Chisel? Yeah. The muscles say, dummy, you 34, you 35.

24:32Shannon Sharpe:Bro, you can't be out here on this track for two and a half hours. You can't be lifting all this heavy-ass weight doing all these sets. Right. Hamstrings like on fire.

24:44Chad Johnson:Yeah.

24:44Shannon Sharpe:But when you're young, you can do that. Yeah. So as you start to get older, what do they say? Sometimes you got to train smarter.

24:52Chad Johnson:Not harder. Yep. Yep. You got food right.

24:55Shannon Sharpe:I'm going to try it. I'm going to try that for a week. All right. I ain't enough time. Joe, your boy Darius Acuff put on the show as well. 25 points, 4 assists, 2 rebounds, and his summer league debut for the Kings. Joe, what did you like about Acuff? Go on. Get a little out there. 27:41Chad Johnson:Hey, A-Cuff the same. I watched a lot of their, like, little mini camp before they started playing, and he looked good, bro. You know what stands out to me with A-Cuff? It's his body, Uncle Ocho. He cut up out there. I'm talking about like he looked like he in real deal shape. And I appreciate that more than anything, especially a young guy his age. And same thing with Darren Peterson. Those guys look like they really take care of themselves. They look like really, really great athletes. And he's another guy who's very comfortable. He doesn't mind pressure. He knows how to get to his spots with the floaters, the middies.

28:14Chad Johnson:I know he got up them FGAs today, but that's okay. We got to work out the kinks. You know what I mean? We got a great season ahead of us. because I think he's one guy who's going to get the ball early, meaning they're going to play through him right or wrong, you know what I mean, and he's going to have to just put up. You feel me? So I think he's going to be able to play through a lot of his mistakes because ultimately outside of Levine here, you know what I mean, he's going to be the guy who they're going to be going to looking for to lead. So I think he's in a great spot.

28:42Shannon Sharpe:Joe, you mentioned that because it looks like they're trying to get off of a – they said if they can't find a trade partner, they're going to release DeMar DeRozan. He has$25 million, but only$10 million is guaranteed. So that's an easy contract that you can spread out over two years. It don't really cost you anything. I wouldn't be surprised if they tried to move Zach Levine. It doesn't seem like they had any takers. Because at one point in time, Zach Levine was a 25, 26-point-a-night high-flying guy. Some injuries are taking his toll on his body. but I think they're kind of trying to transition.

29:19Shannon Sharpe:You hear him mention about possibly moving Sabonis. Yeah. Well, if you move Sabonis, you try to move Levine, you get off DeMar DeRozan, you definitely say, look here, we're building for the future. We already know we're not going to be able to do anything. Let's get these young guys in here and try to build from there.

29:37Chad Johnson:Yeah. Look, I can see them probably getting off DeRozan, but I think they just gave Levine like a two - or three-year deal. Uncle Ocho. So I don't mind keeping Levine with Acuff, you know, veteran presence, all-star caliber guy who's been around the block, knows the ropes, can kind of show him a little something. Even Sabonis, even keeping Sabonis, I think is going to help Acuff as well. So hopefully they keep a couple of those veteran guys around. Man, you don't want to just throw him into the fire and hell. He got to figure it out. You want some guys to be able to help you navigate through this tough season.

30:11Chad Johnson:I was just getting ready to say that. I say, damn, they're getting rid of everybody. I know it's one thing to give A-Cup the keys to the team and allow them to grow and learn, but you got to have some type of veteran presence. Not only veteran presence, right? You got to also have somebody there that can get buckets. You got to have a bucket getter. I wouldn't let the Rosen go. I wouldn't let the Rosen go.

30:31Shannon Sharpe:49 million. This is the last year of that contract. He's a free agent next year. Levine? Yes. Oh, is it? Yeah. So you know teams like expiring contracts. Oh, yeah.

30:41Chad Johnson:They like expiring contracts. But if you keep it in 100, it's probably a couple veteran teams out there who could probably use his productivity, Uncle Ocho. Levine can play, bro. Yeah. Oh, yeah. He's just been on some bad teams as of late.

30:57Shannon Sharpe:I think the thing, Joe, the question is, yeah, he can play, but do we want him at$50 million? Mm-hmm. No, that's the problem. And Sabonis has two years left on his contract. He makes about 45 and a half this year, and he makes 48 and a half next year.

31:18Chad Johnson:Man, look, I think you're going to have to keep Sabonis, bro. You bring in a guard like Acuff, man, you got to have him a guy who's a great pick-and-roll guy in Sabonis. Not only that, he can make Acuff's job a lot easier because he's such a great passer. You know what I mean? Yes. So I think you should keep at least a couple of those guys, bro. Getting rid of all those guys and letting Acuff just take it by storm, I'm not saying that's a mistake, but for these veteran guys that help young guys navigate through the system, you need that, bro.

31:48Shannon Sharpe:Well, they messed that up when they did what they did to Mike Brown. Mike Brown had a great system. The guys made the playoffs in the next year for whatever reason. They fighting. Darren Fox did something dumb. You're up three. Yeah, he commented on it. You found a guy on a three-point shot. He hits the shot, hits the – you get – the only thing can be the joke is a four-point play. Yeah. First of all, how you get out of position to let the guy get the three-point shot off. How you even out of position. And then to make matters worse, what'd you do? You fouled it. And Mike Brown said what he said.

32:21Shannon Sharpe:The next thing you know, Mike Brown without a job. Year and a half later, Mike Brown, the head coach of the team that won the championship.

32:28Chad Johnson:Yeah, yeah. That's crazy.

32:30Shannon Sharpe:People don't believe this, but dumb players get coaches fired. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Along with bad play.

32:36Chad Johnson:Oh, yeah.

32:37Shannon Sharpe:Absolutely.

32:38Chad Johnson:Yeah, before they get rid of the –

32:39Shannon Sharpe:Get you cut or traded, get me fired. That's lose-lose.

32:43Chad Johnson:Yep. Because at some point, hell, they're going to get rid of everybody if it stay messed up. You know, the coach probably going to be the first one going after that. Yeah, because he makes the least amount of money

32:54Shannon Sharpe:of the guys that's actually playing. So I'll probably owe you$20 million.

33:01Chad Johnson:Yeah.

33:02Shannon Sharpe:These guys here making – you see Zach Levine making 40-something million. Sabon is making$45 million, about to make$48 million. So, yeah, you got to hold on to some of those guys. But the Kings, I thought the Kings, look, think about it. They took seven games. They took Golden State to seven games. Yeah, yeah. And then a year later, they get up off him. But, hey, it is what it is. Damn. The Lakers have traded DeAndre Ayton to the Wizards for Jaden Hardy and two second-round picks. DeAndre Ayton signed his player option for$8.1 million last Sunday. Joe, Ayton, another victim of the lights too bright in L.A.?

33:43Chad Johnson:Could be, or just probably not playing up to the potential. You know, what potential they think. The lights could have been too bright for him in L.A. Well, they ain't got no damn lights in Portland. Now, listen, listen, listen. He may go to Washington and ball out. No, he won't. Hey, hey, but you know what it says to me, Uncle Ocho? With Washington having three bigs, you got AD, you got... Sar. Yeah, Sar and Big Aiden. That means... The big abomination. They finna get rid of somebody, ain't it, man? Yeah. Guess who?

34:24Shannon Sharpe:Guess who? AD. Maybe whatever. Now, look, if we believe what reports are saying, I think I was reading somewhere saying that AD is no longer available and they've made it known to team. Now, that could just be smoke, whatever the case may be. But if you take the Bonza and you – you mean to tell me you'd rather have the Bonza play with Sar and DeAndre Ayton as opposed to AD? You'd rather have – I would rather have Trey, Ice Trey, the Bonza and AD as opposed to those other two guys. That's just me. No question. They look at it totally different.

35:04Chad Johnson:Right. No question. But think about this. Hell, if AD finna command$150 million, we don't want to pay that because, hell, last season, last couple seasons, Uncle Ocho, how many games did a man play? Hell, he ain't been out there on the damn floor. So you think they finna pay him$150? Or they gon' send him on by his way?

35:26Shannon Sharpe:I don't know. Sometimes, Joe, I look at the NBA and see who they pay. I say, I don't know. I don't know why. I know you be thinking the same thing. Y 'all just gave this man$200 million? Y 'all gave this man$35 million a year for four years? Did y 'all not see him play? But the problem that I have with DeAndre Ayton is that, again, what are we talking about? You can never outrun your draft position. If DeAndre Ayton was the 25th pick in the first round, he was the 17th pick in the first round, I don't think anybody having a whole lot of problems. But the fact of the matter, he was the number one overall pick in that draft.

36:07Shannon Sharpe:And that's also the pick that Luka Doncic was in.

36:10Chad Johnson:Yeah.

36:11Shannon Sharpe:That's also the pick that Trey Young. There were several other guys in that draft. Now, I'm not – look, it's easy to say. But he didn't have a motor in college. Go back and look at him at Arizona. Go back and look at him at Arizona. And they talk about, this man going to be the first pick in the draft?

36:28Chad Johnson:Yeah.

36:28Shannon Sharpe:With that motor?

36:30Chad Johnson:Well, then, I mean, you know, you heard about Luka at the time, okay, Ocho, but I don't think, not think, nobody thought he was coming over here to do what he's been doing now.

36:39Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. I ain't going to lie, Joe. Everybody that played against Luka, everybody, the coaches that watched him, said he's going to be the best player. Said he's the best player right now. And I'm like, hold on. All the, basically, the European players I know, they slow.

36:55Chad Johnson:Yeah.

36:56Shannon Sharpe:They don't defend, and they slow. Well, two or three, he is absolutely. He's slow and he can't defend. But he'll light your ass up on the offensive end, though. He will cook it. What got me – I was convinced, Joe, when I saw what he did to the Clippers.

37:14Chad Johnson:Yeah. Oh, yeah, yeah.

37:15Shannon Sharpe:With Paul George, Kawhi. Pat Bev. It didn't matter. That man averaged 33, 35 points. I agree. And they would have been sitting in the kitchen sink at him.

37:25Chad Johnson:I agree.

37:25Shannon Sharpe:And he was cooking everybody.

37:27Chad Johnson:I agree, because I didn't think he would be able to handle that pressure with those guys playing him up close and tight, Uncle Ocho, and the way they can pick your pocket. I'm like, man, he was doing that. I'm talking about with no problem.

37:40Shannon Sharpe:I mean, he doing that to everybody. And this was before Kawhi had those injuries that started them out. This was Paul George. Paul George was a great two. They had two of the best. They might have had two of the top five two-way players in the game at the time. Oh, yeah. Yeah, no question. And Luka at 18, 19, at 19, cooked them. Yeah, yeah. And say for good measure, come here, Pat Bell, you get some too because I know you're going to talk about it. So I want you to – when you get you a podcast, I want you to tell the people what I did to everybody else. But, you know, DeAndre Ayton is what he is because he doesn't have a motor.

38:18Shannon Sharpe:And everybody said – and he had that great season in Phoenix. And everything. Oh, okay, he's turning the lead. And see, Ocho, this is what we talk about in football, Joe, a lot. Guys playing hard in a contract year. Has he turned the corner or is this just a contract year and then he reverts to what we've seen the previous two to three years?

38:37Chad Johnson:Yeah. Tell me, ask Portland.

38:42Shannon Sharpe:Portland, are y 'all pleased with – hey, anybody from Portland or the surrounding areas, are y 'all pleased with the effort that DeAndre Aiden gave y 'all?

38:50Chad Johnson:Oh, no, no.

38:51Shannon Sharpe:Phoenix, y 'all had it for a couple of years. Were you pleased with the effort? I already know, Laker Nation. Hell no. He might be the only guy that Laker Nation won't go worse than Braun.

39:04Chad Johnson:It's him. Hey, in Portland, hell, if it snowed too damn hard, he wasn't coming to work. He already let him know.

39:16Shannon Sharpe:It looks like the new rotation could be Trey Young at the PG. at the two, DeBonza, Keyshawn George, Anthony Davis at the four, Alex Saar at the five.

39:32Chad Johnson:So they going to bring big domination off the bench? What? You need a big abomination. I'm saying they going to bring him off the bench. He come to turn over a new leaf. He come to be a new player. He need to be brought off the couch. Hold on. Hey, Joe, who we gonna start over, Joe, if he, if he, if he, I thought they probably move aside to the bench or something. I don't know, man. He's number two pick in the draft. They traded for him. I don't know. Okay. So they gonna bring him out the bench. Okay. Hey, who had the foe? Who had the foe Joe? A.D. A.D. Okay. Okay. Okay. Hey, Washington cooking up something over there while y 'all playing.

40:10Chad Johnson:Man, I'm telling y 'all. Don't do that though. Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Joe, don't do that. Listen, hey, the only if for Washington is, damn it, how many games AD going to play. If AD give them people 50, 60 games, Uncle Ocho, man, they going to be in good shape, bro.

40:28Shannon Sharpe:With no shortage of double big lineups popping up around the league, sources say Washington envisions playing Aiton alongside Anthony Davis and Alex Saar at times. Washington ranked bottom five in total routine rebounding last season at 50.2 rebounds per game.

40:46Chad Johnson:Yeah, you need three bigs. Yeah, we don't know how many games AD going to play. We need somebody to be able to step right in and continue. And do nothing. And what you mean?

40:57Shannon Sharpe:He that worker, DeAndre Aiden, that worker that comes to work every day and don't do a damn thing. Nah, nah, nah. You got to think about it. You got to have a backup for the backup. Because you know AD's history, based on his history, it's impossible to replicate or duplicate what he can do so you got to have a body, you got to have somebody and I know Aiton's history and what does his history tell you Joe? Hey he'll surprise you with a game he'll surprise you with a game Joe talking about that man going to D.C. like if D.C.

41:28Chad Johnson:gonna change something the lights ain't as bright in D.C. yeah you got the number one pick that he gonna be playing with but he can fly under the radar If you can't thrive in Portland, people didn't realize how good Dame Lillard was. He was nice for him.

41:46Shannon Sharpe:Because he was in Portland. Had Dame Lillard been somewhere on the East Coast, anywhere on the East Coast. Think about how many years Dame had the language. People didn't know how good Dame Lillard was. Who?

41:59Chad Johnson:Yeah.

42:00Shannon Sharpe:I remember LeBron had a – I'll tell you what. Let me get Dame Lillard. I'll show you how good he is.

42:11you know

42:13Shannon Sharpe:Clyde Drexler was literally the best two guard in the NBA and ain't nobody even talking ain't nobody even looking for it well it's hard when you're playing in the Jordan era but my point is is that you're in Portland unless you get to the Western Conference Finals ain't nobody looking for you like that so DeAndre Aiden should have been killing

42:35Chad Johnson:lesson learned lesson learned he had to go through a little something okay ocho he gonna be he gonna be a

42:40Shannon Sharpe:different player in dc why boy if joe was the general manager i ain't no no no no no hey a year he'd be right back here with uh right back here on nightcap

42:58Shannon Sharpe:i give a good year chat and he'll be right back here he'll be right back here on nightcap

43:05Chad Johnson:Hey, listen. I like Washington team, though. I do. I really do. I really like their team. I know Trey is going to be determined to show that he's still elite. Yeah. Hopefully AD comes in with that same mindset. And you know AJ, he finna go for rookie of the year. He finna show he the best rookie out there. So I just think they got all the pieces, bro. Now they got to find a way to put it together.

43:31Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. I mean, when I for Dame Lillard, I mean, who is this guy from Weber State? Because he came out of the AD. Absolutely. I'm like, man, who is this champion? Y 'all taking a little bit. I mean, he's six foot tall, 6 '1", maybe. Yeah. Man, the dude shooting the ball from Beaverton.

43:51Chad Johnson:Yeah. He in Portland. Yeah. You ain't lying. What the hell? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

43:58Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. you like in the book because you know portland you didn't see portland like that yeah man

44:06Chad Johnson:hey look i seen dame play summer league as a rookie okay joe you can go back i'm sure you can find it on youtube i'm talking about i'm watching him in the summer league i'm like who is it i'm like oh from weber state six feet the hell did dude come from i'm talking about giving them dudes any and everything out there i was like damn but see what he got like joe he don't show it a lot but damn got bounced oh what got bounced he was in dunk contest once before like yeah he he got he he can get up he can play man he can play and he surprised me in the summer league but then when you see cash ball in the summer league you just think to yourself only because i've been in those situations i'm like man he ain't gonna be a dude in the regular season you know because he's gonna He's going to be playing with veteran guys, top guys on his team.

44:53Chad Johnson:Shit. Man, Dane come out as a rookie. He won rookie of the year, but he playing the same way you playing in summer league.

45:01Shannon Sharpe:Same thing. It would have been interesting to see if they could have kept – what's the – Aldridge. Aldridge. Yeah. Remember, Aldridge ended up signing this free agent deal with San Antonio because he was supposed to replace Duncan. Yeah. Yeah. So I could just imagine, man, the play, basically his career with that guy in the pick and roll with that guy because, you know, pick and pop, roll. Oh, man.

45:28Chad Johnson:LaMarcus Aldridge was the prototypical power forward, center.

45:33Shannon Sharpe:Yes.

45:33Chad Johnson:Of today's era. Like, pick and pop, can shoot, can post up. I hated when they broke up. I hated when he signed and was saying this because I felt like he kind of left Dame out there by himself.

45:44Shannon Sharpe:Right.

45:44Chad Johnson:And although they didn't really backtrack, meaning Portland, you thought that they was going to probably miss some playoffs. Hell, they were still a playoff team.

45:51Shannon Sharpe:They was. Yeah. They just didn't have that big that they could dunk the ball down. Because he was a guy you could dunk the ball down to. He was prototypical. He was Tim Duncan. Because you could put the ball in. He could put it. Hey, he could get down. He's 6 '10 and a half. Drop down there. Turn around. Had a nice turnaround. Kiss it off the glass. Straight in. Hey, pick him. Hey. Because remember him with Miller? The point guard Miller. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Andre Miller. Andre Miller. Remember him with Miller? Yeah, yeah. Now just imagine him with Dane.

46:22Chad Johnson:Man, I watched Portland.

46:24Shannon Sharpe:For an extended period of time.

46:25Chad Johnson:Yeah, yeah. I watched them play against Houston when they had Dwight and James Harden in that series in the playoff series. Okay, Ocho, I think this was like 2012, 13-ish. Ooh, I'm talking about Portland ended up winning the series. That's the shot Dane hit at the end. And that was another shot he hit when he waved bye-bye. Like, hey, that boy got – hey, that boy look different out there, man.

46:52Shannon Sharpe:Georgetown and the New York Knicks legend Patrick Ewing has agreed to become the assistant coach for the Wizards. Ewing has been an ambassador role for the Knicks and now returns to the sidelines coaching for the Wizards. Joe, you like this? Who's the head coach of the Wizards?

47:10Chad Johnson:Damn, let me look. Hold on. Hey, hey, if he's been an ambassador for the Knicks, wouldn't it be? Nah, they ain't doing that. No? No. How you know what I was getting ready to say, Joe? Because I already know how you think. Damn, Joe. Yeah, I know you like a book. But I'm just saying, Patrick Ewan, you know, he has... Brian Keith, who is this? I don't know him. Yeah, I don't either. Go on. Get a little out there. into the big heart of Nevada, where you can go off-road and off the map, on two lakes or on horseback. 52:10Chad Johnson:But yeah, nah, Ocho. They weren't going to bring Patrick Ewing in there, man. No. They just want a title here. Damn. Hey.

52:19Shannon Sharpe:Look, the thing we can say about James Dolan, you might can say whatever you want, but the one thing he does, he takes care of the former players as far as letting them come back to the game, having them on the road. We saw. I mean, look, I think Allen Houston, Allen Houston, I mean, he might used to work and he might still be in some type of a road. Yeah, he's like assistant GM. But you look at Allen Houston and you look at Sprewell and you look at Marlboro, you look at Marlboro, and you look at all the guys that were in the stands on the side, basically in the stands close by at the home games on the road.

52:49Shannon Sharpe:they're probably fine on the team playing Joe and Ocho.

52:52Chad Johnson:Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. I'm sure they do.

52:54Shannon Sharpe:So that's great. Everybody doesn't have that type of relationship. And I don't know if all those guys, you know, some guys maybe don't even want to be around. Because sometimes guys leave and they have resentment towards the team. They don't even want to be around the team. There's no functions. They don't come back for whatever reason. Whatever reason. They have their reason, and I'm okay with that. You come back if you want to. If you don't, that's okay, too. But I like what James Dolan does for the former player, John Stark that want to be around, he'll allow those guys to come around.

53:21Chad Johnson:Absolutely. Absolutely.

53:22Shannon Sharpe:Hey, that's dope.

53:23Chad Johnson:Yeah, shout out to Patrick Ewing, bro. Hey, Uncle Joe, Patrick Ewing has, he's coached before, hasn't he? Yeah, he coached. Yeah, he coached. I think he was like an assistant with the Bobcats. I think they're the Hornets now, but I think he did some assistant coaching over there when MJ was the owner. But yeah, he got a little coaching background. He was a head coach at Georgetown for a few years. Yeah. Yeah.

53:48Shannon Sharpe:He had Mack McClung. Mack McClung was there with...

53:51Chad Johnson:Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.

53:53Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, in Georgia. Yeah. Okay. Hey, McClung. Hey, Joe, man, buddy, jump out the gym. I'm sure he can play a little ball, huh?

54:01Chad Johnson:Man. He can dominate the G League. He athletic, Ocho, but it's just a difference, bro, when you get in between those lines and you watch guys play and some of the reads and reacts. But he's had opportunities to play in the NBA. He just can't stick. Damn, man. It's probably number crunching, number crunching. A little politics too. Think so?

54:22Shannon Sharpe:You know, he was on the Lakers. He was there with Austin Reeves. Yeah. They were both rookies. And I remember that game Austin Reeves played. I don't think anybody played. It was just Austin Reeves. The last game was against the Nuggets. And Austin Reeves goes crazy. Yeah. I mean, he goes crazy. I think he had like mid-30s, maybe even 40. Yeah. Right. And I think that's really what sold. That's what really sold the Lakers. Like, this kid legit.

54:47Chad Johnson:Oh, yeah.

54:48Shannon Sharpe:LeBron, you know, when he was getting the game with LeBron, LeBron would give him the ball, move out of the way, say, hey, go do your thing. You watched him when they played Memphis. Hey, do what you do.

55:00Chad Johnson:Not afraid of the moment.

55:02Shannon Sharpe:He got more and more confidence. It's like, yo, man, LeBron gave me the ball to move to the sky. Yep. Shit. Okay.

55:13Chad Johnson:Y 'all know confidence. it's something else, bro. When you gain some confidence, bro, it change your whole game. You be a totally different player. Boy, completely. Hey, Unk and Joe, when you got confidence, boy, you walk different. Hello. You hear me? It's like when you get a haircut. For some reason, when you get a haircut, I don't know what it is about getting a haircut and having that little lineup, a guy having that little shave. Yeah, yeah. You just feel different. There's a certain confidence. When you get that in sports, and you kind of like, you get it figured out. Unk, when I figured it out, Joe, like when it came to football, when I got about in year two, like in the middle of the season, I said, well, goddamn, they say the game is supposed to move fast, but for some reason, everything seemed to be moving slow.

55:56Chad Johnson:Slows down, yep. Man, I say, you know what? I finally arrived. Yeah.

56:00Shannon Sharpe:You see guys, he know he a bench warmer, and he go up there and talk to the baddest thing at the party like it ain't nothing, all up in the face.

56:11Shannon Sharpe:Bro, I ain't even that confident.

56:13Chad Johnson:Yeah, yeah.

56:15Shannon Sharpe:Hey, Shaw, she can't say nothing but no. Yeah, hello. But I ain't really tried to hear that tonight.

56:19Chad Johnson:Yeah, yeah. Hey, hey, some guy - I need this to be a yes party. Yeah, hey. Some guys got, hey, hey, boy, that's a different type of confidence. She can only say yeah or nay here. Hey, what you - That's it. Oh, yeah. That's it. Hey, that's me there. I don't care who it is, boy. Out my league, in my league, below my, I mean, it don't matter. You know, I'm going to come up, I'm going to start off with a joke. You gonna say something. Oh, Joe, I don't care. Hey, Joe, I don't even care. Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, Ocho. In high school when I ain't had no money, I don't care who it is. Ocho.

56:52Chad Johnson:I'm gonna be funny. Ocho, I'm saying, let's say you go, let's say you in a restaurant and she eating, she got four or five other girls. Oh, take your time, Joe. You gonna go up to the table and go and point it out. I'm going up to the whole table. Excuse me. You getting the baddest one. You with the baddest brick in the pile. Man, listen, excuse me. Excuse me, miss. Excuse me. Hey, how you doing? I don't mean to interrupt, but what's your name? Yeah. Okay, listen, I don't want to interrupt, and I don't want to take too much of your time because you're with your girls, right? You free for dinner in two weeks?

57:18And boom, she going to laugh because the first thing, who the hell asked to go to dinner in two weeks? Yeah. I'm asking for two weeks because the two-week part of what's going to get your attention because why would you not ask to take me to dinner? You know? Yeah. What's the two weeks for? The two weeks for? Oh, the two weeks just give you enough time to get comfortable so you get to know me. Okay. Boom, so boom, she locked in right there, off the rip. Hey Joe.

57:41Shannon Sharpe:See Ocho, see Ocho that guy, Ocho. See that word right there? Yeah, hey. Go tell her your horrible boy what a holla at her. No, I got Ocho. I got Ocho. I got Ocho right on that. Hey, hey, hey. That's me. Hey, it's not what you say, it's how you say it. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, delivery's important. It can, you know, most of the time women, they alarm when strangers approach them, right? Alarm. You gotta put them at ease as fast as possible. and you got to have the gift of gab, Joe. It's all in delivery. It's all in delivery.

58:12Chad Johnson:And then after you do all that and her friends vouch for you, it's a wrap. Girl, look, girl. Now you the top of the group, Chad.

58:21Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. You get your homeboy like Ocho, because he Ocho Brave. Yeah.

58:28Chad Johnson:I know some cats like that. I don't care.

58:32Shannon Sharpe:Hey, what's your name? Yeah. You see my partner over there? You know what, Joe? I'm like this here, Joe. I'm over there like this here. Yeah, yeah. He tried to even know. He want to know if he can get your number. I tell him to come over here and ask for it himself.

58:49Hey. I'm telling you, Joe. Hey, Joe. I got so much in my little toolbox, right? I got so much in my toolbox because I talk a lot. Yeah. You know what I mean? And obviously, I'm not shy. I'm very, I don't want to say confident, but I approach anybody.

59:05Chad Johnson:Yeah. Oh, he will any setting. It doesn't matter where we at, man. We at church. We had a funeral. We don't go to the club, but just any outing. If I see something, I like. Oh, man, Joe, I'm ready. Hey, Joe.

59:34Chad Johnson:but you made it too hard for a car. No, come on, man. Come on. Come on, Joe. Hey, Joe, he made that up, man. He made that up. Hey, but listen, hey, hold on. Hey, let me tell you. Man, man, come on, man.

59:50Shannon Sharpe:It's too hard for a car. I'm going to choke. Come on now. Hey, let me tell you another one I used to do, Uncle Joe. You know, early in my career, in my younger days, right?
