In short

Nightcap Hour 1 covers three sports topics: England’s World Cup win, NBA contract rumors, and NBA free-agency/LeBron-Lakers speculation. On the World Cup, hosts discuss England’s 4-2 victory over Croatia, highlighting Harry Kane tying the England record for World Cup goals and praising Judd Bellingham and substitute Marcus Rashford’s second-half scoring. They argue England looked good but that group-play opponents can make top teams seem better than they would against elite competition. The conversation shifts to Messi vs. Ronaldo, with claims that Messi’s style creates chances for others and thrives in big moments, while Ronaldo is framed as a “machine” scorer with elite shooting and headers; they debate who is “greatest” largely as a matter of preference and trophies.

Notable examples

Messi’s World Cup hat trick (referenced), and comparisons to Jordan/LeBron and Barry Sanders. NBA segment: Trae Young reportedly plans to decline a ~$49M player option and seek a multi-year deal; Washington is discussed as the likely destination. LeBron James and the Lakers are discussed as negotiating a new contract, with speculation about roster retention and possible moves.

Guests

Shannon Sharpe (host) and Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson (co-host), plus Joe Johnson (co-host; 7-time NBA All-Star, former pro).

6:53Shannon Sharpe:Many believe it's the best match of the tournament so far. Outstanding, Judd Bellingham and substitute Marcus Radford made sure the win were the impressive second half goals. I don't know about the most impressive of the match so far, Ochoa, but what were your thoughts?

7:07Joe Johnson:I mean, it was a good game. Obviously, England, they wanted to come home. They haven't won the World Cup since 1966. I think since 1966. So they had one win. Harry Kane looked good. Marcus Rashford came in. Jude Bellingham, who plays for Real Madrid. They looked good. They played very well as a team. They moved the ball around well. In all three phases of the game, they were solid. Midfield, in transition. So they looked good. They looked good. But the thing is, most of the teams that are supposed to dominate, most of the top, top, top teams, countries in general, they look good in group play.

7:42Joe Johnson:because they're not facing teams that have just the same level of talent. Exactly. So everybody looks good right now. Right. Look, taking you at your word, England did what they're supposed to do.

7:58Shannon Sharpe:Oh, yeah, absolutely. It wasn't like they played France. It wasn't like they played Argentina or Portugal. They didn't play one of those teams. Okay, they did. We know what Harry Kane is. He's a phenomenal player. Yes. But me, I think Count Verde of Spain was equally as impressive considering the goaltender stood on his head. Me personally, hey, considering what I saw last night with Messi with a hat trick, I think he's the other part. Don't you mention, if Messi come out your mouth, you better have G-O-A-T at the end of it.

8:31Joe Johnson:Hey, listen, listen, listen. I'm glad you guys are realizing how great Messi is. but in this conversation, hey Joe, it's all about preference. When we talk about Cristiano and we talk about Messi, it's similar to that Jordan and LeBron debate. You can bring up stats, you can bring up accolades and resume and all that. But it also comes down to preference. I understand how great Messi is. I love not trolling but I love creating the dialogue and the conversation on Twitter, asking people, I know he's calling Cristiano the goat but I understand how great Messi is. I understand he is God's gift to the beautiful game.

9:05Joe Johnson:I get it. I know it. I've been watching the past 25 years, you know, but to me, my preference based on style of play and flair and goals from the outside and headers and all that stuff. I know what Messi can do. They're completely two different styles of players, completely different. And what I saw today from I'm sure we'll get to it. I don't want to I don't want to jump the gun. But listen, I know I know I know how great Messi is. I'm not going to call him the goat. I'm going to call him God's gift to the beautiful game. so is he the greatest gift to the game hey Unk all Booth but he's special man hey he's special Joe oh my goodness you know what the equivalent to me would be Unk is he's like what Barry Sanders is Barry just doesn't have the numbers he doesn't have the trophies and the hardware to support how great he was

10:00Shannon Sharpe:and I think that's the thing Ocho when you look at it, when you look at the trophies, you look at the league, the World Cup goals, obviously that gave him a notch above. Let's just say they're starting from a dead heat. If we look at the Bolimdor award winners, I think what is it? 8-5?

10:15Joe Johnson:8-5, yeah.

10:16Shannon Sharpe:Okay, we look at World Cup goals. World Cup, excuse me, titles. That's one for Messi, none for Ronaldo. Now that puts him a little bit further. Now you got to go back to league championships, okay? Who's won the most league championships? Who's won the golden boot? And so when you look it up, because I think Messi is older than Ronaldo, if I'm not mistaken.

10:35Joe Johnson:No, Messi, I think Messi's 30. No, Grishon is older. Grishon is older. Grishon is older, okay. Yeah, he's 38, I think, 38.

10:41Shannon Sharpe:So it would be interesting to see, like, when people, like, would really, like, you get a panel. Because if you got a panel of, let's just say, experts, you get two NBA, former NBA players. You get two current NBA players. You get two, one panelist from way back when, Michael Wilbon, and you get somebody recently. and you put him on a panel and you says, okay, why is Jordan the best? And why is LeBron the best? I would like to see a soccer panel assemble very similar to this because I'm sure some people are going to say, well, it's neither one of them. It's Pele. But I would like to see a panel assemble to tell me why one is better than the other.

11:19Shannon Sharpe:Because, I mean, like you said, you can't just look at like awards, like eight to five, and how many league championships have you won and how many, you know, they played in so many different leagues. and, you know, I don't know all the leagues, but it'll be very interesting to see. Because, you know, I think probably if you ask the general population, I think 80 % of the people, 80, 85 % of people are going to pick Messi.

11:42Joe Johnson:Yeah, absolutely. You're absolutely right. 80 % of them are going to pick Messi. But Cresciano in his prime, what he was able to do, he dominated in England. You know, when he was at, he dominated in Spain when he was at Real Madrid. You know, he was young and was there sporting when he was at Lisbon in Portugal. He played well there. When he got to Man United, he dominated there. When he went to Serie A in Italy for Juventus, he dominated there. Now in Saudi Arabia, you know, he dominated there. So we've done it in multiple leagues at a high level. And Messi did it at Barcelona for a very long time for a team that was suited and built around him.

12:20Joe Johnson:Listen, that's not to take anything away from his greatness and what he was able to do at that time. And now here at Inter Miami, you know, he went to PNG. He had a short stand at PSG where, I mean, he wasn't the same. He wasn't the Messi that we're used to seeing. But here at Inter-Miami, he's right back to his magic. And now the World Cup stage again, the moment is never too big for him. And that's what the World Cup is about. The best players in the world stepping up in moments where it matters most. And he showed out. Go ahead, Joe.

12:47Shannon Sharpe:Hey, Ocho, when it comes to Ronaldo and Messi, what's the different attributes that they have that makes them so different from each other? That's a good one. That's a good one. Joe? What is it? Because, you know, if everybody would pick Messi, I'm saying what makes Ronaldo so special? What makes Messi special? Like from somebody who's just getting into soccer and don't really know a whole lot about it, what's the difference? What's the biggest difference?

13:12Joe Johnson:If you would ask people, Messi, they would say he makes everyone around him better. Messi can do it on his own, and Messi can create for others around him. He can take you on 1v1, 1v2 hell 1v3 1v4 we've seen him he can dribble through people he can do all that stuff but he also he's always three steps ahead of everybody else always willing to make the best always willing to make the pass always makes the correct pass he plays simple or he can play flashy in general from a passing standpoint cristiano or animal he's animal he can shoot from he can shoot 30 to 40 yards out. Headers.

13:53Joe Johnson:It's unbelievable what he could do. I mean, I could see her all day as far as the comparison.

13:57Shannon Sharpe:From the little bit that I've seen

13:58Joe Johnson:Ocho, if the ball's on

14:00Shannon Sharpe:his foot, I want it on Messi's. If it come down. Now, if you're talking about my head, okay, I'll give you that. Well, hey, you let Messi, when Messi take that penalty kick, hey, just go on down there. You down 1-0.

14:13Joe Johnson:Just go on down, Ocho. You down 1-0. Yeah, he's very consistent. He's very, he's very, he's very concerned.

14:19Shannon Sharpe:Man, that left for the Rascal, man. Hey, I just got the, that Joe got in the box the other night. I said, oh, man, how you, I mean, I'm talking about, I mean, this much. The ball got in, buddy, got in the corner this much, Joe. Yeah. Hey, he accurate. Low, mid, high, bending.

14:37Joe Johnson:He accurate. Hey, Joe, but, I mean, Cristiano's an animal, man. He's a machine, man. He's a machine. He can shoot from 30, 40 yards out. Obviously, a lot of people complain because they say, oh, He takes a lot of penalty kicks, but I mean, that's a part of the game. It's a part of the game. But a completely two different styles of player, and again, it all comes down to preference, Joe. It all comes down to preference.

14:58Shannon Sharpe:Okay.

14:59Joe Johnson:All right.

15:00Shannon Sharpe:But it's going to be very interesting. Ocho, I think, hey, Argentina win it, he closed the door. It's over. Mm-hmm. And because you have to realize, in the World Cup, Ronaldo hasn't performed like Messi has on the biggest stages, Ocho. No, no, no.

15:15Joe Johnson:You know what? It sucks the comparison, too, because Messi's team plays so much better. And they're built perfectly for him. If you watch Portugal today, hey, Joe, the midfield for Portugal was horrible. I mean, their job is to be able to create and facilitate similar to what a point guard does. And what many would say would be the best midfielder right now in the game in Bruno Fernandes, they didn't do anything. They didn't do anything. Prashano doesn't play on the wing anymore. He plays a nine. So the nine is reliant on someone being able to give him the ball. What he has to do is his off-the-ball movement has to be spectacular, being able to hold a line, making sure he doesn't go off sides, and hoping they can facilitate and give him the ball.

16:00Joe Johnson:But they weren't able to do anything at all, anything. Honestly, they look bad. They look bad.

16:08Shannon Sharpe:And I'm not going to hold it against him because everybody's had a moment where they didn't play particularly well. but you can't have multiple series where you don't, especially in the world cup where you don't play, don't come up big, especially for him. Big time players got to play big and big time game. That's how you become legendary. Like you said, you mentioned a Ronaldo and UEFA and all those, those lead championships where he's had two, three goals where he's had the header or he's made the game winning penalty kick. We've seen him do it. World cup is where it's at. Yeah. That is, that is your country.

16:44Shannon Sharpe:and, hey, I don't know what we could have. I mean, we have the Olympics, but, hey, somebody might have a relative in the family that's from Norway or from Sweden or something, and you root for them too. When it comes to this right here, you all England, you all Argentina, you all Portugal, you all Croatia, you all Senegal, you all Nigeria. You all in. I guess it's like the Knicks. If you're from New York, I don't give a damn. You're from the Burroughs, you're from upstate, wherever. White plays, it don't matter. You a New Yorker. But your boy going to have to come through, Ocho, and it ain't looking good.

17:21Joe Johnson:It's only one game. It's only one game. But obviously, matter of fact, everyone else around him has to look good. See, Argentina, boy, them boys, Joe, I can't even explain it. You would have to watch the game and see everything went right for them. Everything went right. And Messi was always in the right place. and if he wasn't in the right place, he created space to be able to get those shots off. And every shot he took, he made it. Yes. He made it. Like, I'm, dog, Joe, I'm talking about a matter of inches. A matter of inches. The margin for error is so small. If you're out of place, there's nothing you can do.

18:00Shannon Sharpe:It's a wrap. It's kind of like the point guard. Look, a lot of times they throw in blind. They expect you to be to a spot. They know where the double team is coming from. And so, hey, I know where Joe should be. Even if I don't see Joe there, Joe should be there. That's why you see hammer passes. That's why you see snap passes all the way cross court. Because they know, oh, you doubling. Where you was on this, you're supposed to be guarding Joe. So if you're not guarding Joe and Joe's supposed to be in the corner pocket, I already know where Joe is. I don't even need to say, hey. And that's why when guys pass the ball and it goes out of bounds, they look at it like, bro, what are you doing?

18:36Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. Right. Same thing. Supposed to be in your spot. Same thing with the quarterback. He knows where you're supposed to be. Well, how did he know there? Because he know the play that he called. He knew where he was vulnerable. And a guy came, so he knows where you – something is supposed to replace where that guy came from. Yeah. Yeah. And it seems like both of these guys are legendary. Look, I never saw Pele play. I only saw Maradona, that mythical run that he had in 86. Yeah. Watched the finals last year. You know, watching Mbappe and Messi go at it, like I said, I haven't seen a whole lot of World Cup matches.

19:12Shannon Sharpe:But it's hard for you to tell me that there's been a better match than what you saw four years ago with that one.

19:17Joe Johnson:No, that was a good one.

19:18Shannon Sharpe:Right. You're talking about two of the best players showing you why they're the best players. The best players, yeah. Absolutely. And that's what you want. If you got two of the best players, you want them to go head-to-head. Let me see why you say thank you the best. Well, let me show you. Well, let me see why you the best. Okay, let me show you. You don't get that often because it's hard for the quarterback. Like, he's the best player. Well, what's the equivalent of going against the quarterback, a D lineman or a cornerback? More times than not, you're not taking no chances against Rebus. You're not taking a chance against time.

19:53Shannon Sharpe:You don't have no choice but to drop back to pass the ball. If Miles Garrett is on the D line or Aaron Donald or LT, you don't really have a choice. But more times than not, when you're going against a historically, a generational cornerback, you're not wasting your time. You're not trying to prove no point. Sometimes guys get into a need to get the ego joke, get involved. Like, we're going to throw the ball. Hey, if he's out there on the field, okay, he out there on the field. Now when he high-stepped, he got his hand behind his head, and you look at it like, no, no, you said he was out there on the field, and we're going to take our chances.

20:27Shannon Sharpe:No, let's take our chances on the other guy. We already know he's not that good. Right, right, right. Because he going to turn into C. He absolutely will. He absolutely will. And that's what we, you know, when we play guys like time, we ain't mess with him. Right. What do we get out of that? We don't get bonus points. We don't get, oh, if we score touchdown on time, do we get 12 points? You get the same number. So let me go on over here because I already know he's not as good as time. His instincts, his reaction is not like time. And he doesn't have the makeup speed that time got. You had to be accurate.

21:01Shannon Sharpe:You had to be put, he going the other way with it. Now you're okay. Pull around if you want to. Yeah. Hey, you got to be a bad boy, man, to cut the one side of the field. Yes. Absolutely. Hey, yeah, to where they don't even look your way. The quarterback, when he hiked, he don't even look your way. The uniform was just as clean as when he put it on. And the man done played four quarters of football.

21:22Joe Johnson:Yeah. None but respect.

21:27Shannon Sharpe:Yeah.

21:27Joe Johnson:But we got to find out, Ocho. Yeah. So we in group play. Yeah, Joe and I, we got a long way to go now. Oh, yeah, because the final's not until the 19th, so we still got over a month to go. Yeah, yeah, yeah, we got a long way to go. I leave tomorrow morning to Seattle for the USA-Australia game, and then I come back to Miami for Portugal and Colombia. Where are you going? Seattle, Seattle for the USA-Australia game.

21:58Shannon Sharpe:Oh, okay, okay. No, sir. Ain't no way in hell I'm flying from Miami to Seattle. Why not? Man, you know how far that is?

22:09Joe Johnson:That's six and a half, maybe seven hours. That ain't bad, but that's going to A. That's going to root the USA on. Hey, I'm trying to hit as many matches. I'm trying to hit that.

22:19Shannon Sharpe:I'm going to read them all from my living room. Hey, Joe, I'm trying to hit as many matches as I can. I see, bro. Go ahead, man. Go ahead. Go ahead, Poehead. I'm going to say right Joe I'm going to be right over here I need someone to look closer Maybe SoFi I could have been SoFi Right

22:42Joe Johnson:Hey listen we need to catch a game Either a game in Houston or a game in Atlanta

22:48Shannon Sharpe:Atlanta seems more plausible to me

22:49Joe Johnson:Yeah hey let me know I can get a sweet ticket

22:54Shannon Sharpe:Atlanta definitely seems more plausible Alright Alright Joe according to Mark Spears Trey Young plans to decline his $49 million player option for the 2026 season and become a free agent on Monday. 27:11Shannon Sharpe:14 max interest. I'm confused. What do you think about – I don't think anybody surprised. I mean, one year versus opting back in, he can get a five-year deal. I don't think – well, he don't have bird rights, so he just got there. So I don't know. Can they offer him a five-year deal or is it a four? That's what I'm not sure of. I think because he's been there, I think he should be able to get a five-year deal. I'm not sure.

27:37Joe Johnson:Hey, please explain to me. Say what you just said. He opted out of his play option. How much was his play option? $49 million. Like$49 million. How do you opt out of$49 million?

27:48Shannon Sharpe:Because it's one year, and I want to get in for four years at$190 million, or$200 million, or five years for$250 million. Basically, he want a new contract.

27:57Joe Johnson:Oh, okay, okay, okay, okay, okay. With multiple years, as opposed to just this one.

28:01Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, and knowing that he's probably going to get it, you know what I mean, considering that this is his last year. So he had an option. He opting out so he can restructure and get him a whole new deal. It's smart. I think it's smart. I think it's smart on his behalf, considering the fact that they're going to have a number one pick, which is probably going to be AJ. So you still got time before you have to pay AJ, and then you can kind of see how this works out. You got at least three years. Yeah, you got Trey, Anthony Davis, and AJ DeBosca. I don't know what people are talking about, man. I feel like Washington, with them three dudes alone, plus they got other guys, you know, they got some more talent over there in Washington that can help.

28:44Shannon Sharpe:But I can see them making the playoffs next year, Ocho, the Wizards. The question is, Joe, half of you and Ocho, are they going to keep Anthony Davis? Because I think more teams, he would probably have a high interest from a Golden State or somebody that has championship aspirations. I'm saying he ain't no free agent, though. No, no, no. But could you get draft capital, or do you want to keep him with Trey Young? Obviously, he can pick and roll. It would be unbelievable, him and Trey. Obviously, he can pick and pop. Obviously, he can roll. Great lob threat. He's got a nice mid-range game. Play outstanding defense.

29:19Shannon Sharpe:You're going to need that because Trey is a little undersized. He's at a disadvantage. We understand that. So the question is, does he have more value to Washington, or would he have more value to somewhere else where you can get draft capital for him? Nah, I think if I'm Washington, I got to at least try it out for a year, Ocho. I mean, considering the fact that you got a nice big who you can play next to him, what's the big they got over there? The big fella, I think he was like number two in the draft. Oh, Star? You talking about Star? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. You got him, and he made leaps and bounds last year.

29:56Shannon Sharpe:So I think he'll be even better going into his third season. But I just think, man, they got enough talent over there to where they can make some noise in the Eastern Conference. I don't really, I don't want to see these guys. Like, for instance, I don't want to see Giannis in the Western Conference. I don't. I really don't. No, I don't. I don't. Why not, Joe? Because the West is such a gauntlet, Ocho. I mean, it's so, they stack. And not only are they top heavy, but the teams that's in the middle and at the bottom, they're going to continue to get better. I just feel like it's going to be such a dogfight over there.

30:32Shannon Sharpe:and kind of like how Minnesota and San Antonio and OKC, how they beat each other up to the finals. Like, I just feel like if he stay in the Eastern Conference, you have a better chance. That's just me. I feel like you got a better chance of making it to the finals. The East, it ain't really top. If it's got a few good teams, obviously the Knicks, you know, you want Boston to be good, especially if they get Giannis. and then you send JB to Atlanta, we're going to be probably third best team in the Eastern Conference, baby. Alex Saar. That's his name. Alex Saar. He's a freshman. Yeah, Alex Saar.

31:10Shannon Sharpe:He's going to have a freshman go one and two. Alex Saar. They got some talent. Washington got some talent, man. I'm telling you. Okay. So, it's going to look. The question is, how many more years does AD have on his contract? Because he's probably going to be looking for a new deal, Ocho, and ISO. He's going to have to show us something. I mean, can he come into camp in shape? Yeah, I can come in shape, but I feel more comfortable coming in shape with a new three, four-year deal.

31:39Joe Johnson:Hey, hold on. Hey, Joe, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on. The best availability is availability. Young Bull hurt every year. What we talking about, he'll be happy with a new three, four-year. Can we stay healthy for a season? Can you give us 70 games? You ain't got to give us 82. Can you give us 70?

32:01Shannon Sharpe:That's what I'm saying, Ocho. But you heard the report, though. He's not happy being there. Y 'all heard the reports. I ain't breaking no news to anybody. But he don't even know, though. I do know. It's D.C. I don't want to be in D.C. They haven't won anything since, what, 78, 79? You got a good team. They got a decent team, right? I feel better in Golden State. How about this? Hey, we get y 'all our first-round pick in Jimmy Butler. Y 'all give us A.D. Man, ain't not Jimmy Butler got an ACL tear. I'm just telling you what we willing to do, ISO. Nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah. We ain't, nah.

32:38Shannon Sharpe:We ain't going. We ain't going. Because look, if you're going to pay Trey, man, you can't have that man out there trying to figure it out by himself. He needs some veteran help over there, too. And you got some veteran help. Yeah, you need some veteran. But Jimmy coming off ACL, huh? He don't care. He don't care. He won't. See, what I want. He want all in the team. He want Bron and AD and all in the team up in Golden State. We're going to talk about it, but the reports look like LeBron is going back to L.A.? Oh, yeah?

33:09Joe Johnson:I don't know. Hold on. How they going to do that? How they going to pay Reeves and play Bron? Don't start me to lie. Don't start me to lie. Matter of fact, how they going to pay Bron a respectable number that he's willing to play on and pay Austin Reed? Or is Austin Reed going to take a pay cut just to keep the band together?

33:27Shannon Sharpe:I don't see Austin Reeves taking no pay cut. Me neither. He turned out an extension this past offseason to get to this point. Hey, Brunson took a pay cut? Every year he's averaged more points than the previous year. He's not going to take – What they got to do – And he knows there are other teams out there that are willing to give him a four-year max extension. Brunson took a pay cut? What they got to do with me? If I'm AR, I'm like, what they got to do with me? Are you trying to win or not? Man, I'm trying to get this money on. Hey, you talking about am I trying to win? I'm trying to secure the bank.

34:01Shannon Sharpe:What you mean? But see, here's the thing. The problem that you have with that is that you got to – agents are going to tell their clients, no, because what you do is that you suppress the market. Remember how many people – Tom Brady was another one. Because what happened in New England? If Tom Brady only making$10 million, I'm a 10-time All-Pro. bro, how can I pay you more than Tom Brady? Quarterback looking around and saying, look what Tom is getting. How are we going to pay you more than that? He's the best quarterback in the game. So this is why baseball players, and a lot of times basketball players, you get an isolated incident like Jalen Brunson.

34:36Shannon Sharpe:But most of the times, they won't let you do it because they want that thing to keep climbing. Keep climbing. And the only way you can keep it climbing is you don't give guys a discount. The same reason the TV contracts. CBS lost their deal because they was like, you know what? We want to pay you a little less money. And Jerry Jones said, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. We understand y 'all been in this thing for 50 years. But you know what? They're that new network and they only got the Simpson and Living Color and News. They're willing to give us X. That's Fox. And what happened? So they don't cut it.

35:12Shannon Sharpe:Now, they might cut you a little discount if you go in. They still got, what, three plus? they got 26, 27, 28, 29, 30. They still got five years on the deal. They say, you know what? Give us a little bump in pay. You don't make it right. You don't flip it. Add a little five years to it. We might shut y 'all. Cut you a little 200 million a year off. Probably not because guess what? Netflix right there in the cut. They were rubbing their hand like a bird, man.

35:43Joe Johnson:They waiting. They waiting.

35:47Shannon Sharpe:so what are you going to do I mean if you like somebody some major network is going to lose their TV rights because they don't have Netflix money they don't have Amazon money NFL might be hesitant to give Amazon Thursday night package and it but for the right price anything is possible but I know Netflix coming Netflix is coming

36:13Joe Johnson:oh yeah Oh yeah. One thing about it, Joe boy, everything for sale, boy. I don't really know what it is. Everything got a price tag, man.

36:23Shannon Sharpe:Hey, anything can be bought can damn sure be sold. Did they buy the NFL team? Well, they'll damn sure sell them rights to the highest bidder. Come on now. Yep. Yep. And Netflix probably looking to get into that live sports and all that. The only way you can become a for real network. You got to have live events. Why do you think they pay for the Anthony Joshua, Jake Paul, Jake Paul and Mike Tyson? Why do you think they keep having these live events? They understand it. The movies are great. Taped events are great. They do a great job with movies and documentaries and all that. Unbelievable. But live events is where it's at.

37:01Joe Johnson:Oh, yeah.

37:02Shannon Sharpe:And they understand that. The same thing with Paramount. What did they do? They got the UFC.

37:13yep i'm just saying yeah it's gonna happen oh yeah it's gonna happen

37:21Shannon Sharpe:you gotta lock in twin i'm ready i'm gonna be ready when it do happen

37:28Shannon Sharpe:the lakers and lebron james are reportedly negotiating a new contract per brian windhorse i think the focus right now is making a deal with the lakers right now he's allowed to negotiate with the Lakers and I believe they are negotiating. I believe they're going back and forth.

37:45Shannon Sharpe:I can see that. The thing is how many of those guys you really going to be able to bring back? You know, when it comes to Rui, when it comes to Marcus Smart. Well, we know two guys that we know one guy that don't want back. Who? He coming back. Who they don't? He a free agent? Dominator? Yeah, abomination. Oh, yeah, the big abomination. He's out of there.

38:15Joe Johnson:How you know? The big hallucination. How you know, huh? Hey, hold on. You can't let somebody walk unless you got somebody to replace him. Yeah, you can. Because they don't take much to replace him.

38:27Shannon Sharpe:He a free agent? Hold on, he a free agent, huh? I think he signed a one-year deal. Didn't he sign a one-year deal? If I'm not mistaken, he had a one-year deal, Joe and Ocho. Well, then what you gonna do about your beard? You gonna need a beard?

38:38Joe Johnson:This is gonna be a proving year for him, huh? And what did he prove? He good and terrible. Yeah, somebody gonna pay him, though.

38:48Shannon Sharpe:I can't look here. You breaking with your girl. Somebody gonna date her. That ain't got nothing to do with you. Yeah. Right, right. Hey, she break up with me. Hey, somebody gonna eventually date me. I might not get a date tomorrow or two weeks from tomorrow, but somebody gonna scoop O'Shea up. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

39:12Joe Johnson:Man, hey. Hey, what'd you say, they might not get you right away but they gonna get you? How about I get scooped up tomorrow?

39:21Shannon Sharpe:But hey, hey, hey, Ojo, but he gonna put meat on something that night. Hey, hey, hey, don't. Right now, I ain't got no emergency. I ain't got no breaking, you know, breaking glass in case of emergency. I ain't got that no more. Yes, sir. I ain't got it no more.

39:37Joe Johnson:Hey, time to change.

39:38Shannon Sharpe:Oh, he got a player option for 8.1. Oh, he opted up out of that. He ain't finna play for no 8.1. Yeah, he opting in there. I bet you he don't opt in that, Joe.

39:48Joe Johnson:8.1, ain't that kind of disrespectful, ain't it? Yes.

39:54Shannon Sharpe:It's disrespectful. It ain't disrespectful if ain't nobody going to pay you here. Somebody give him at least 15, 20, Joe. A seven-footer? Yeah, he too tall. And guess what, Joe? guess what he'll be better over here where with the Lakers that's what how many times we don't say this in the NFL we see this in every league you might be bad over there but you will be better over here right everybody will convince themselves I can change them how many times you don't see somebody pick up something I can change them never that I know she might have been like that with him or he might have been like that with her, but me?

40:38Shannon Sharpe:Hold on, hold on. Wait, wait, wait a minute. Hold on, hold on. You got this. Slow down, Turner. Slow down. Check me out. Check me out. Check. Y 'all hear me out. Hear me out. You forgetting that Luka got hurt. Luka wasn't there, man. AR missed a lot, and it was him and Bruin a lot of the times, so he put a lot on Aiden. That probably shouldn't have been on him. You see what I'm saying? if Luka can stay healthy, if those guys can stay healthy, I don't think his job should be that damn hard. It is, though. Because you know why? Because he doesn't have a motor. You look at the guys that Luka's played with, you look at Daniel Gafford, what does Daniel Gafford have?

41:18Shannon Sharpe:A motor. Lively. What does he have? A motor. Guys that play with him have motors. That's what you need. I can't beg you to play. Hey, big fella, we need it tonight. Now, come on now. We need it tonight. I can't – hey, I got like two or three of them in me. Over eight or two games straight, Joe. That's all I got. I got to do this every night? Hey, man, look. Y 'all know it. It's some guys, bro. You got to give them that pat on their back every game just to get them amped up. I'm going to let somebody else pat him on their back. So you got to keep Jackson Hayes, though. You got to keep him. I would rather have Jackson Hayes than DeAndre Ayton.

41:57Shannon Sharpe:But they probably, you know, you're looking at how the Mavericks are looking at possibly they might be looking to get off of P.J. Washer, looking to get off of Daniel Gafford. I think Gafford, having played with Luka, understands Luka. He's definitely a lob threat. He runs. He plays hard. He's a better rim protector than DeAndre Ayton for sure. and I think a team like Utah Jazz wouldn't mind probably getting off one of them bigs you see Kessler is being reported that he turned down a 5 year 140

42:36Shannon Sharpe:it's unimaginable to me because I'm looking at a guy that doesn't really shoot 3's if he shot 3's let's say he was he shot 3's like a Wimby or a Jokic or one of those guys like that, I was like, okay, that might be a little undervalued. But looking at him, yeah, he can protect the paint. Would he be better than Aiden? Possibly. I think he's a much better defender than Aiden. But that's not saying much. Hey, Uncle Joe. But his motor, Aiden could be good if he just had a motor.

43:10Joe Johnson:And you think sometimes these dudes overestimate their value? Yeah. Or do they know they won't get exactly what they want by turning down some of these deals.

43:19Shannon Sharpe:I think they know the market, Ocho, and they know, like, your agent ain't sitting here telling you to opt out your damn contract knowing that he can't get you another deal. You feel me? He's probably talked to a bunch of teams. Right, right, right, right. So they already got something in place. Now all you got to do is pull the trigger. You feel me? Like, ain't no guys opting out their contracts thinking like, well, I hope a team come along. Hell no. Especially not the kind of money that Trey Young got on the table. Rich Paul knows something. Rich Paul's done spoke to teams. He's probably already spoken to the Wizards that Trey's going to opt out of this contract.

43:55Shannon Sharpe:This is what we're looking for. And plus, you traded him. Why would you not? I mean, you going to let that man go after what you gave up to get him? I think that was in the deal, if you ask me, that Trey gets a new deal before he plays a game for the Wizards, which is probably why we never seen him play when he got traded. Exactly. Yeah. So it wouldn't make sense to me. I mean, it's the same thing. Anybody that signs Giannis, they've already got an extension already done. Oh, yeah. I'm not signing him and have him come and play on the last year of that deal. Absolutely not. After I've given up all those assets, so whoever signs Giannis, you best believe a deal is already done.

44:40Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, because the one thing you don't want is a disgruntled superstar. You don't want to gruntle, bro. Take care of him. And for me, I just, I've seen enough. I've seen it. Joe, I've seen enough. I saw it at Phoenix. I saw it at Portland. I saw it at, look, I saw it at the Lakers. How many more times you need to see? Aiden just doesn't have a consistent motor. Right. He's been at three. And the man's not 30. How old is Aiden? 28? Because he was in that draft with Luka. He went one. That draft with Luca and Trey Young. DeAndre Aiden is 27 years old. Oh, that's it? Oh, he going to get it. 27. He going to get his money.

45:27Shannon Sharpe:And I got to beg this man to give me effort. See, I can't do anything about it. Look here. How good you shoot, how good you run. Some things are just effort. Effort, yeah. How hard you going to play? How many times you say, son, I don't care. Hey, if you make a mistake, make it full speed. because that's that's not necessarily a talent that's something you can bring every night energy and effort you gotta be able to bring that every night that Joe got little tiny tiny tiny hands

46:04Shannon Sharpe:tell me the time Joe you played in the league a long time tell me a guy that got worse hands than DeAndre Aiden in the history of basketball

46:13Joe Johnson:Sometimes them players can be a little too hard for them, huh?

46:16Shannon Sharpe:Man, damn that, Ocho. Listen, let me tell you something. As a big, that's probably one of your best attributes you can have is a nice set of hands to where you can catch, period, point blank. That's the one thing that was great about playing with Amari Stoudemire, Uncle Ocho, when I was in Phoenix. It didn't matter how you threw him the damn ball. He was going to catch it. Boy got some big mitts. You feel me? And when you got guys who can catch, Hey, man, it makes a world of a difference. It's not, like I said, I mean, to ask a guy to, I mean, just think about it. A seven-footer. Yeah. Kessler's turning down 140.

46:55Shannon Sharpe:It's being reported. He's turning down 140. DeAndre Ayton, the deal that the Lakers could sign him for, that should be DeAndre Ayton's deal. What, 140? Oh, yeah.

47:08Joe Johnson:239.1 for five years. If he played the right way, if he showed up on the court the right way, that's just not him. It hasn't been him.

47:19Shannon Sharpe:They just get, you big, they just trying to give you some money, Joe and Ocho. They just trying to give it. If you a big, if you a big, a seven-footer, they trying to give you money. And you're right, but it's hard. It's like I just hired y 'all for this new job, but I got to call y 'all old job to get some positive news. positive news. Man, how was Ocho? How was Unke? And they don't tell me nothing positive here. All I know is if I look at you and I see your ratings and you done been on three jobs and all of them give you an F rating, you think I'm about to call you? To do what? Ocho, who you calling if you know they got a bad rating?

47:55Shannon Sharpe:Right. You go, they got the grade of food. You go to a restaurant and they got a D. I'm going to walk on pass. Hello. Now, I don't know why they got a D, but I'm going to take their word that the food, the people that came by and graded them, they knew what they was talking about. So I don't know if they left the meat out. If they got rats, they got roaches. I don't know if the food was... I don't know anything. I just know somebody got a D in the window, I'm walking on pass. That's just me.

48:27Shannon Sharpe:Thanks. Look, I understand references, but in this situation, I don't need the references. I got my eyes. I saw him at Portland with Monty Williams and all those guys and Devin Booker and Chris Paul begging him. I saw him in Portland. They begging him. I saw him in L.A. They're begging him. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. Yeah. Yeah. I'm good. Yeah.

48:56Shannon Sharpe:He's still young. I know it's probably, hey, I don't know what's going to happen. I'm going to let him burn in on somebody else's time. because in a relationship, Ocho, there are only so many times she going to tell you she want to go out. There's only so many times you going to tell her, baby, you need to get up off that.

49:15Joe Johnson:Oof. It's tough.

49:18Shannon Sharpe:There's only so many times I ain't finna keep begging you. She's not finna keep begging you to take out. She's not finna keep begging you to do something for her or with her. She's not. Hello. Because if she with you, Ocho, she know she a pretty good thing. If she with you, Joe, she know she pretty good. But if y 'all won't, he will. Hello. Hey, O, you ain't going to find nobody like me. Okay. Okay, she won't. She found your punk ass, didn't she?

49:53Joe Johnson:Yeah, yeah, yeah. Hey, you can walk out that door if you want to. Shoot. Huh? Copenhagen spit-free pouches are packed full of American-grown tobacco. Made for welders. 53:58Joe Johnson:What happened? There's only one Ocho. Yeah.

54:03Shannon Sharpe:Hey, don't get yourself a no-cho.

54:05Joe Johnson:I'm not. That's my baby, bro. That's my baby.

54:09Shannon Sharpe:So I'm just looking at this dude. I'm like, bro, do you realize how this man should be making like 600 million. In today's game, all you got to do is be decent and play like 15 years, Joe. you walking away with$500 million. After taxes, an NBA player today that's worth anything, after taxes, should have about$200 million stored up. Oh, easy. Easy. The way they giving out the bag now, look, man, you can get $150 million now with no credentials. You ain't got to come with no all-star appearances, no all-NBA. You ain't got to come with none of that. You got to come with some pretty decent numbers, bro.

54:51Shannon Sharpe:That's it. Period. That's it. Game different, man.

55:01Shannon Sharpe:But we're going to find out. We'll see if LeBron, look, it's been reported that he's going to, you know, they're talking. They're probably trying to get the numbers right. Look, Mark Waters, who owned the Dodgers, who bought, who purchased the Lakers, full ownership will be transferred to him at a later date and time. I don't know when that is, but obviously he's a businessman. and he's got a lot of money tied up in the Dodgers. When you got Mookie, you got Shohei, and you got all those, Turner, and you just signed Tucker. You got Yoshi. That's a big payroll. Big time. But they paid it off because they're winning.

55:44Shannon Sharpe:He wants to win. He wants to win. He paid$10 billion for the Lakers. $10 billion with a B.

55:54Shannon Sharpe:they're going to have to pay some money for your agency

55:57Joe Johnson:who that

56:00Shannon Sharpe:Lakers

56:01Joe Johnson:they need defense Joe they need somebody to play some damn deep outside of Marcus Martin

56:09Shannon Sharpe:look and that's the thing if you're going to have a guy that's a little suspect on defense you've got to have at least two to three defenders wing defenders on the court at all times. Right. All the time. Go look at the Knicks. What do they have? Josh Hart, Mikael Bridges, OG Ananobi. Mitchell Robinson comes in to replace Cap. You get Landry Schammett playing defense. You go look at OKC. What do they have? With Shea, he's not the greatest defenders, but you got Dort. You got J-Dub. You got Wallace. You got Caruso. You see a reoccurring theme? You look at the Spurs. If they're in Fox, but you got guys like Castle, you got Vassell, you got that alien behind you.

56:54Shannon Sharpe:You see a reoccurring thing, what's going on here? So if you're a suspect at your point guard, you better have two to three defenders on the court at all times. Yeah. Because if you don't, especially when it comes to clutch time, what are they going to do? Put him as great as an offensive player is. When they get to clutch time, they put Luka or they put Austin Reeves in the pick and roll every single time. Yep, you're going to be chopped liver. If you can't guard out there on that perimeter and we got to get too much help, you getting beat off the dribble quick because guess what? This is a point guard's league now.

57:33Shannon Sharpe:Okay, Ocho, it used to be a big man's league. Yep. This is a guard-driven league now. Kind of like the quarterback. Everything revolves around the quarterback. Same thing with the point guard because he facilitates, he makes everybody better. Not only that, he has to be able to score that damn ball nowadays. Oh, yeah. And with that being said, if you don't have guys who can guard, you're in trouble, bro. The guy's too good. They're just too good nowadays. From the perimeter standpoint, it's too many possessions. The game is played at such a high pace now that, bro, if you ain't got guys who are willing to do the dirty work,

58:09Joe Johnson:it's hard to win. Hey, I got a question, Uncle Joe. Go ahead. Especially when it comes to basketball, right? we're seeing an influx of point guards now being 6 '5", 6 '7", 6 '9", like that. With Jalen Brunson showing that they can get it done. Shorter point guards can get it done like they did back in the days. You know, 6 '1", 6 '2", 6 '3". Do you think that opens up the door for the NBA to still look at some of the shorter point guards as well, being that Jalen Brunson just took his team to a championship? Or they don't care enough about that?

58:40Shannon Sharpe:Honestly, I don't think they really care too much about it because you got to look at the guys that's around Jalen Brunson. You know what I mean? The OGs, the Bridges, the Hearts. All these guys are blue-collar, hard-working dudes, bro. They going to do all the dirty work for Brunson to be able to chill. Okay, you go guard Champinney. Yeah, he ain't doing nothing but standing in the corner shooting threes. You feel me? We going to do all this dirty work, but on offense, we need you to be the engine. We need you to get us going. We need you to have legs down the stretch to be able to close games.

59:10Shannon Sharpe:They just got a great makeup of a team that Knicks do. And, yeah, it's kind of like anything. Like you've seen with the Warriors. Everybody tried to copy the Warriors' style, the running gun, having bigs who can shoot the three, who can playmate. Man, this is a copycat league, bro. But in 80-year history, how many six-foot guards have led a team to a championship? So are you going to take an isolated incident or are you going to take an 80-year body of work? Right. see everybody oh drew okay for every short quarterback that's led a team to a championship in 100 plus years you got drew breeze and got russell wilson so in 110 years you got two quarterbacks let's let's just go back since the merger we don't need to go all the way back to 1919 when the acme packers and all then the bears and all the steelers came around in 30 and the giants and we just go back to the merger i think the merger started in 67 right How many six-foot quarterback backs or below led a team to a Super Bowl?

1:00:14Two. Russ and Drew.

1:00:21Shannon Sharpe:Most of the quarterbacks have been 6 '3 above. How tall is Eli? Eli by 6 '3. Okay, okay, okay. John L., I mean, you're getting 6 '2 and a half, 6 '3. Obviously, you get Manning and you get Big Ben Roethlisberger. You got Peyton. I think Joe was 6 '2". Steve Young is about 6 '1". But you start going 6' and below. Yeah. And you're right. It's a copycat league. It used to be everybody wanted small receivers. And then everybody, then all of a sudden, Jerry Rice brought his 6 '2 ass in. And then everybody wanted to get 6 '2 and above receivers. Right. Yeah. So. Yeah. Yeah, you can, I mean, are you going to build your team especially for Jalen Brunson?

1:01:07Shannon Sharpe:It's like when you go back and look at Memphis, they built their team for Ja. They had Desmond Bain that could guard. They had Dylan Brooks that could guard. They had Triple J that could guard. Right. You see? If you're going to build your team like that okay, you got a chance. And even though no, I didn't say, you know, Shea is not a cone. Shea is not a cone. But he's not an elite defender. They built their team with defenders. Shea's normally going to have the weakest offensive guy. I need you to rest, bro. I need you to save some of that energy for the other end. That's what they did with Brunson.

1:01:49Shannon Sharpe:Man, Champagne ain't doing standing in the corner, man. Yeah. Go ahead and go rest. He ain't going to put it on the floor and take it to the right. All he's going to do, he's going to spot him and shoot threes, and if you fly by him, he's going sidestep, a reset behind the three and shoot a three. Right. Yeah. Yeah. So it's going to be very, very interesting to see how this thing plays out. Meanwhile, the Warriors are prepared to offer LeBron a$15 million non-taxpayer mid-level exception per Anthony Slater. Man, that ain't no money. That's$7 million in LA, in California. Hold on,$15 million what?

1:02:34Joe Johnson:400 pounds. You might be talking about 400 parents in the Bay Area. An autograph signing? Hey, hey, Ocho.

1:02:44Shannon Sharpe:That's what I'm saying. Hell, Bruin ain't signing there for the go - In California, in Miami or Tennessee, you know, somewhere they ain't got no taxes. That might be, hey, you know, six, six, ten, six, three. Hey, that's 11, 12 million dollars. But in California? Right. Well, it's 13.5 % plus 13. Oh, no, man. And then by the time you put FICA and Medicare, man, no, no, no. They don't took 54, 53, 52, 53 % of my money. Hell no. Hey, hey, I don't even see it no damn word. I don't see LeBron taking that money no damn word. 50, nah. Uh-uh. Uh-uh. That man, hey, listen. I think he going to get big money.

1:03:25Shannon Sharpe:He probably just do what Jordan did them last years, Uncle Ocho. He just one year me out. One year, 50 million. damn 50 Joe hey man wouldn't surprise me Ocho damn I don't know I don't see that man maybe maybe maybe 45 Joe

1:03:45Joe Johnson:50 that's

1:03:48Shannon Sharpe:Ocho do you see the money these dudes making yeah but they all

1:03:51Joe Johnson:they all young we talking Ron finna be 42

1:03:54Shannon Sharpe:man hell and he the king he the leading scorer

1:03:58Joe Johnson:in the NBA history every point goes down in history yeah that's why I said 45. 45 ain't bad. Just knock 5 million off that. It ain't bad. It's going to be

1:04:08Shannon Sharpe:very interesting what he does as far as is it a one-year deal? And guess what? We find ourselves right back here in this situation. Is it a two-year deal? You know, 45, 50 million, 60 million dollars. I mean, what's the deal? Because I don't think the Lakers want to be right back in this situation. I don't think they're going and pass three, maybe it's one year and an option. Yeah. I don't know. We're going to see. I can see a scenario where he played, you know, 24. He feel it. Like he said, he said, as long as my mind is sharp, I can. And that's it. The desire. Do I still have the desire to get to the arena five hours early?

1:04:51Shannon Sharpe:Do all the things that I need to do. Get those shots up. Do I still like getting that round-o 'clock tree, you know, get to the hotel and I get, you know, Mike Macias meets me. there and I get all this stuff taken care of. How, I mean, he's been doing it. This will be his 24th season. We know he's playing this year. Let's set aside potentially 25. We know he's going to play this year. Man, he's been doing this for 24 NBA years. How long have you been doing this in high school? Been doing this since he's 17. Right. Yeah. Under the microscope. And remember, I've heard a lot of people, a lot of great say, is boring and is lonely.

1:05:31Yep.

1:05:33Shannon Sharpe:Most of the time, greatness, you're on that road by yourself. Oh, yeah. I think he understands that, though. I think Brian understands that, bro. He's a guy, obviously he's up in age and he's doing something that's never been done, but he's a guy who keeps himself in elite shape. For sure. I think at this stage and point in his career, that's his biggest attribute right now. You know, keeping himself sharp, keeping himself strong to where he can withstand an 82-game season. And he's shown he can do that. Yeah.
