In short
College football recap and debate—Georgia’s comeback vs Auburn and Cam Newton’s jersey retirement controversy; Texas’ Red River Rivalry win led by Arch Manning; Penn State’s collapse and James Franklin criticism; plus other major upsets (Indiana over Oregon, Colorado over Iowa State).
Guests
No named guests appear in the transcript. The hosts are Shannon Sharpe (“favorite uncle, Shannon Sharp”) and Chad (co-host). Johnny Manziel is referenced as a planned guest analyst but does not join due to technical difficulties.
Key claims
- Georgia scored 20 unanswered to beat Auburn 20-10, “spoiling” Cam Newton’s jersey retirement; the key play was ruled a fumble on replay (no touchdown).
- Auburn’s QB play fell apart after a momentum-altering goal-line fumble; Georgia’s defense “took over.”
- Arch Manning’s best performance vs a top-10 opponent: 21/27, 166 yards, 1 TD; Texas scored 23 unanswered to win 23-6.
- Penn State’s James Franklin is criticized for repeatedly losing “games they’re supposed to win”; Drew Allar’s replacement issue is tied to Aller’s eligibility ending after a season-ending injury.
Notable examples
- Indiana upset Oregon 30-20, holding Oregon to 64 second-half yards; Indiana had 6 sacks and 8 TFL.
- Colorado beat Iowa State 24-17; Coach Prime returned four days after blood-clot surgery and Colorado emphasized no-turnover execution and third-down efficiency.

14:10Shannon Sharpe:Tonight he will not be able to join the Georgia Bulldogs down the Auburn Tigers 20-10. It looked to me, Ocho, that Auburn was getting ready to deal them a death blow. They were getting ready to go in, make it 17-0. Because up until that point, Georgia had done nothing. They might have had 10 yards of total offense, but they got rejuvenated. They scored. Same thing that happened Monday night. Remember Trevor Lawrence tried to go over the goal line? The guy knocked it out of his hand. Georgia recovered. Go down, get a field goal right before the half. And from that point on, they never looked back.
14:46Shannon Sharpe:Auburn, for whatever reason, Arnold was not able to get on track because I thought he played well early. But once that play happened, it's like all of a sudden he could not connect with his receiver. He was low. He was high. He was behind. He was in front of. And Georgia dominated. Georgia defense took this game over. That's what that was. They took this game over. And I wanted to get number 52's name. That's a bad player. That D lineman, whoo. He's the real deal. He's going to be playing on Sundays. Yeah. When I look at a game like this, Unc, and it comes to Auburn playing a team like Georgia, you got to put them away.
15:23You got to keep your goddamn foot on the pedal all the way. No conservative plays. And obviously from the quarterback position, you have to be almost perfect to win a game like this because you know Georgia's built to be able to come from behind. They have the tools. They have the players. They have the coaching to be able to come from behind. And that's exactly what they were able to do tonight.
15:46Shannon Sharpe:They did. They did. Look, like I said, and Chad, I don't know how you guys felt. I know a lot of you guys watched the game. Some of you guys were watching Texas A &M in Florida or maybe the LSU South Carolina ball game. But watching this game, I really felt that Auburn was about to deal these guys a death blow. And, you know, and that was second down. So if they don't get stopped there, they still get third down. And I don't know if you freeze your goals for it on fourth down. But once that played, the momentum, it was like it's so deflating because you're so close from a momentum altering play because you're like, man, we're about to go up 17-0 over what, they're the number 10 team in the country, and we got them on the ropes because up until that point, they had done absolutely nothing.
16:31Shannon Sharpe:They couldn't run it. They couldn't throw it. Even when you look at them now, 31 carries, 79 yards. Gunnar Stockton, he got guys started making plays. He was 24-38 for 217, but they had done nothing up until they got that fumble at the goal line and then they really didn't look back because, like I said, they scored 20 unanswered points, and it spoils Cam Newton's jersey retirement. They stopped it. They replayed it. I don't care how you look at it. That was not a touchdown because he's losing possession as he's about to cross. He doesn't maintain. He doesn't have full possession of the football.
17:07Shannon Sharpe:You can't give them that. No, they called it on the field as a fumble and replay evidence upheld the right call. That was a fumble. I know Auburn fans might not like it, but that was a fumble. And you just got to do – I'm sure the quarterback coach and Coach Hugh Fury, the offensive coordinator, who is ever going to be dealing with the quarterback, they're going to say, son, we got to have the most important thing is ball security. You cannot – we cannot – we're not equipped. There are very few teams in college football, as we're going to talk about, we saw Oregon lose at home today to Indiana.
17:41Shannon Sharpe:There are very few teams equipped to fumble the ball because it's such a deflating, it's such a demoralizing play, Ojo. We go from getting six, possibly seven points with the PAT to we get nothing, and then they go down and get a field goal. That's a 10-point swing. And now they got life. Now, as bad as they played for the entirety of the first half, they go into halftime feeling like they got momentum, and they get the ball to start the second half. So Kirby's telling these guys, that's a way to fight your ass off, guys. You hung in there. Give us a chance. You gave us a defense. Great job. You gave us a chance to stay in this ball game.
18:17Shannon Sharpe:Offense, now it's your turn. And they got momentum and they got a touchdown and they kicked a couple of field goals. But you can't. You cannot turn the ball over. You just can't. Auburn especially, you're not good enough. This is not Cam Newton's Auburn Tigers. They're not. And they turned it over and they paid the ultimate price. but Georgia Georgia find a way to keep let's just keep fighting and scrapping they still got a couple of games to go I think they got I think they still got Florida but Florida is not the Florida we were thinking about the Texas Longhorns dominated the number 6 Oklahoma Sooners in the latest edition of the Red River rivalry 23-6 after disappointing shoring against Florida last week.
19:09Shannon Sharpe:Arch Manning played sensational today. 21 of 27. 166 yards. One touchdown. Trailing 6-0. Minutes into the second quarter. Texas scored 23 unanswered points over the final 34 and a half minutes and outgained the Sooners 188-88 at the half. Sealing the program's largest margin of victory. 17 points over an AP top 10 opponent as an unranked team since 1957. Ocho, So me, you, and Johnny have been very, very critical of Arch Manning. Yeah. This is the best I've seen him play against a ranked opponent. Absolutely. And the good thing for Arch, he needed a game like this, Unc. He needed a game like this, not against San Jose State or a smaller school where you're supposed to win and you're supposed to play well, but you need to have a game like this against a ranked opponent that has equal to somewhat talent that you do as well.
20:05He played phenomenal today, and this is great for his psyche. It's great for his confidence. Now he can build from this going into next week and the rest of the games going forward saying, okay, you know what? I actually can do this. And I think he's been playing so bad because it's happened to me before in my younger days when I first got the opportunity to start where things aren't going well, and I started questioning myself. I started questioning myself, well, am I doing it right? I'm putting all the work, and all the work I'm putting in practice is not showing up when it actually matters and counts.
20:32So for Arch to have a game like this today against a very, very good quality team, this is going to be a huge boost for his confidence. So I'm glad he had a game like this so he can go forward and he can just stack one on top of another and build from there.
20:50Shannon Sharpe:He needed this game, Ocho, and rightfully so. I don't think anybody has been out of line by criticizing him. Look, you're going to have to – look, if you're in the SEC, it's like being in the Big Ten. You're going to have to win games against Ohio State. You're going to have to win games against Michigan. You're going to have to win games against Oregon and so forth and so on. If you play in the SEC, you've got to beat Georgia. You've got to beat Alabama. You've got to beat some of the upper echelon teams. He has not played well when he's played conference opponents or out-of-conference opponents when they've been on his level or maybe a little better.
21:28Shannon Sharpe:Today, I thought he threw the ball. I thought he was decisive. I thought he threw the ball exceptional on the move. He was great on the move. Now, look, we always knew that he was more athletic than both of his uncles. I don't know if he's as athletic as dad. His dad was a hell of a receiver, but he had a neck injury that ended up costing him his career. But we know after seeing him move, regardless of the division that he played in in high school, the way he moves, we know he's more athletic than his uncles. The question that we have, can he process information as good as his uncle? Will he be as – will it transition?
22:01Shannon Sharpe:Will he translate as good as his uncle? Today, this was the best Arch Manning that I have seen against opponent that we like, I want to see what he can do against these opponents. Because we've seen him against other opponents and it didn't go well. This was sensational today. This was the best Arch Manning chat. I'd like to know what you guys think. This was the best I've seen him play against a big-time school since he's been at UT. Yeah, he's still there for when Quinn Eros went down. And, man, Arch needs to start. Arch needs to start. Bro, that's San Jose State. Bro, that's UTEP. No, no, no, no.
22:41Shannon Sharpe:When he does that against Bama or Georgia, Ohio State, or like he did today, Oklahoma, Tennessee, now you got my attention. But beating teams that you should beat, nah, that doesn't do anything for me. But I thought today, Ocho, was his best game that I've seen him play. in a big time situation since he's been at UT. Yeah. And so I don't know what's going on with this. What happened? I'm trying to get this I don't know what it is with this internet. My internet is so slow in here. Hey, again? I'm telling you, you got to get rid of that dial up. You got to get rid of that dial up man i'm telling you spend a little extra cash get get the fiber fiber optic wires we got fiber optic optic my bad my bad we got everything here all right it was 21 of 27 166 one touchdown they ran the ball 35 times for 36 for 136 yards look you didn't have no gaudy numbers but oh oh you had the one thing we know about brent venables when he was at clemson they were know they had you know you think of Deshaun and you think of Trevor Lawrence but their defenses were really really good AJ Terrell, Kristen Wilkins, Cleland Farrell, Dexter Lawrence they had Brian Reed they had guys that could get after the quarterback they had outstanding defense and he is a pressure pressure guy yeah so if you thought that you know he was going to have you know 350 yards against that defense probably wasn't going to be likely that is a division that is a conference opponent.
24:27Shannon Sharpe:They play each other every year. They're very familiar with each other, but given the circumstances, considering how he's played against big-time opponents since he's been there, this is the best. Look, I'm not saying the guy's going to be Peyton, but I'm saying we beat him up when he played bad. We should be able to lift him up when he plays good. That's all I'm saying. Hey, listen. Key words you just said. He played good. He didn't play great. He played good but this is this is a confidence builder for him and it's all about stacking wins on top of another it's all about playing consistently and stacking those on top of another and once you get in the groove and only always being consistent and protecting the ball making the right reads making the right throws it'll it'll come it'll come to you he gonna be gonna be all right he He's going to be all right.
25:21Shannon Sharpe:Oh, no, I thought he played very good. He didn't just play good. He played very good. You look at the throws that he made on the run, rolling to his left, rolling to his right, opening up his hips to throw the ball back to the middle, threw on timing. The touchdown, the guy broke free, and he got that there. The big run at the end of the game to seal it, Ocho. You know, I don't know if you trust Eli, but I've seen Peyton run some naked boots. and be able to get it and get down. But no, he played really, really well today. And I'm a firm believer because we beat him up pretty good, and I think rightfully so.

25:57Shannon Sharpe:I don't think any of the criticism that's been levied by anybody that's been on this platform towards has been out of line. He hasn't played well based on what we've been told the product is. Yeah, like I said, I'm not interested if they're beating UTEP. I'm not interested if they're beating San Jose State or they're beating Lester Tier. You're going to cut your teeth. You're going to earn your keep by beating Alabama, beating Georgia, beating LSU, beating Tennessee, beating Oklahoma, beating those teams. That's when Ohio State, if you played Ohio State and it didn't go well. But when you play teams like that, that's how you make a name for yourself.
26:34Shannon Sharpe:Absolutely. When you step up in competition or you play a level competition or you go on the road and you win games, people don't give you an opportunity, don't think you can win, or you're not supposed to win. because you're an underdog for whatever reason. I mean, obviously, you go on the road, you want to win, and you're like, hey, we got just as good a chance. But today, he showed me something. That is a big rival. That's the red – that's our – look, Texas and Oklahoma, they steal each other's players. We come into Oklahoma and get your guys, you come into Texas and get our guys. Right. And then guess what?
27:11Shannon Sharpe:We have a showdown the second week, what, second week in October? and for the bragging rights. And you see they bring that trophy out and everybody's excited and celebrating because it's a big deal. Archimandy, you showed me something today, bro. You absolutely showed me something today. Hopefully they can carry over. Who do they play next week, Ash? Hopefully this carries over and you can build on it. They're four and two. They started the season number one. Yeah. They were the number one ranked team in the AP Bowl. Hey, where they rank now since they have two losses? They just rank. They stink.
27:46Shannon Sharpe:So they rank. They're not ranked. Like I said, this is the first time that they've beaten a top 10 opponent as an unranked opponent since 1957. Hell, even I wasn't alive. Oh, they play Kentucky. Oh, they play Kentucky. Wait. Oh, hold on. Ash, that game is October 18th. No. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That's Saturday, yes. Yeah, I'm going to be at that game. I'm going to be at that game. You know, Mocha, she got me tickets to sit in the student section. If I'm not mistaken, that's Kentucky's homecoming. Am I right? I'm correct, Ash, right? I don't know why they would do that. Yeah, she told me to come.
28:28She said, Daddy, can you come to the homecoming October 18th? So I told Doug, I said, Doug, don't put no number of schedules for October 18th. I'm going to sit in the student section. I'm going to paint my face with, you know, the blue heart. And I'm aware to check. I'm aware to check overall. You know, to check overall.
28:44Shannon Sharpe:Man, they stole that from Tennessee. Tennessee wore them to wear checker overalls. That's where they got that from? Yeah. Yeah, you know, Kentucky got the blue and white one, so I got mine. I'm ready. They stole that edge from Tennessee. No, but look, this is something they can build on. I don't know what Texas schedule is, the remaining schedule, but this is a big boost for him. He knows he hasn't played well. He knows he hasn't played up to expectations. Everybody loves to back up quarterback until he has to start to play. This is what, you know, oh, play him in front of yours. Play him in front of yours.
29:19Shannon Sharpe:Don't you think if he was better than yours, Steve Sarkeesian would have put him in there? Yeah. Of course he would have. Now, that's not to say that he won't go on and be a better pro than yours. But they got Kentucky. They're at Kentucky, at Mississippi State. They get Vanderbilt at home, which will not be easy. They get Georgia, Arkansas, at Texas A &M. They don't got no easy schedule. Yeah. Texas A &M and Texas do not like each other.
29:56Shannon Sharpe:Texas A &M actually tried to keep Texas out of the SEC. So that's a little bad blood. Hell no. How can you do that? How can you keep another school with another hand? You vote not to let their ass in. Oh, okay. That's how you do that. That's messed up. At Kentucky, at Mississippi State, Vandy at home, at Georgia, Arkansas at home, Texas A &M at home. So it's not like they desperately needed this win today. Yeah. Desperately needed this win today. Mississippi State, I mean, Kentucky, I mean, the rest of them, all SEC opponents. Kentucky, Mississippi State, Vandy, Georgia, Arkansas, Texas A &M. Ooh, that's a nice little gauntlet, too, boy.
30:47That's a nice little gauntlet, too. But, again, as Texas goes, everything is based off the quarterback play. For sure. Man, this ain't just about Texas. This goes for any team, whether it's college, whether it's high school, whether it's NFL. Well, the better your quarterback plays, the better your chances are at competing and winning games.
31:06Shannon Sharpe:Yes, you're absolutely correct because the way they've set the game up now, Ocho, the ball is in his hands, the way they protect the quarterback, the way they protect the wide receivers with targeting, especially in college with targeting and all that stuff. Yes, the quarterback, he's far, far too valuable and directly impacts how well your team plays. When he plays well, the team plays well. When he plays like crap, it's hard in today's game, be it college, NFL, or high school, to overcome poor quarterback play, especially in today's game. But University of Texas get a win on the Red River rivalry over the arrivals to Oklahoma Sooners by the score of 23.

37:45Shannon Sharpe:They scored 23 unanswered points to take the win. Drew Aller's college career is likely over, and Penn State's once-promising season has turned into a nightmare. The Nittany Lions lost their third straight game on Saturday, a 22-21 loss at home to Northwestern. Nittany Lions coach James Franklin confirmed afterwards that Aller would miss the rest of the season. Because he played four more games each of the past four years, Aller has no more eligibility remaining. Only way Aller's career could be extended if there is some type of NCAA eligibility rule. Franklin, after the loss, it's 100 % on me, and we've got to get it fixed, and I will get it fixed.
38:30But I think – now, y 'all still – I remember three weeks ago,
38:35Shannon Sharpe:we talked about this. We talked about James Franklin continuously lose games. He never wins the game that he's supposed to win. When he goes up against Ohio State, I think he's beaten Ohio State maybe once. But he finds a way to lose. And then last week, and then again this week, Northwestern? Northwestern. I understand you lost your quarterback, but you got more talent than Northwestern. Right. Whoa, whoa, wait a minute. Wait a minute. Wait a minute. Now you know how severe it can become offensively to run an offense. Think about what you just said when it comes to having a quarterback, consistent quarterback play, and how difficult it becomes to actually win games when your quarterback goes down.
39:22So maybe he doesn't have the talent you think he may have or you wouldn't have three losses in a row.
39:30Shannon Sharpe:Look, I think James Franklin is a good coach. I don't think he's great. I don't think there's anything special about him, to be honest. That's just me. Watching him when he was at Vanderbilt, watching him over his career, I don't think he's special. I don't think he's a must-have. I don't think he invigorates your life. Oh, my God, we got James Franklin. Right, right, right, right. I don't think, you know, if one of these big times – so you think if Michigan, Ohio State, Alabama, one of these big-time college programs, the first call he's got, it reaching out to James Franklin? No. No, absolutely not.
40:02Shannon Sharpe:Look, bro, you go to Northwestern, you're like, man, I'm going to be a doctor. I'm going to be a businessman. I'm going to be a lawyer. I'm going to be journalism. Man, come on. So you're not giving the football players no credit, huh? I mean, look, Pat Fitzgerald was a hell of a football player in college. I mean, I don't really know a whole lot of Northwestern players that play in the NFL. I mean, I know a lot of them that's in, you know, Mike Wilbon and Mike Greenberg. I know a lot of them. I know a lot of businessmen A lot of business people that went to Northwestern You know what I want to say too Obviously I'm not taking it up for James Franklin You have to win games Especially playing for a school A prestigious school like Penn State That has had much success Throughout their tenure in general I also Think about Bill Belichick As great as he is As great as his resume is in the NFL And going to North Carolina and obviously having expectations.
41:02A lot of people expecting them to look like what Bill did and what he's able to do with the Patriots and then him not having success in North Carolina. It's similar to James Franklin. We have expectations for them to look a certain way, but maybe he doesn't actually have the tools and the players
41:19Shannon Sharpe:to be able to do what he needs to do to beat some of the big schools. Penn State sunk millions and millions of dollars in retaining key veterans from 2025, aiming to repeat Ohio's success in 2024. So they spent money to bring a lot of them guys back. Yeah. Oh, the offensive tackle, he got hurt. He was the highest paid tackle in football at the Chargers. He went to Northwestern, Rashawn Slater. Oh, he the real deal. Yeah. He the real deal. But that season is over, Ocho. Where you going? You ain't going to the Big Ten Championship. You ain't going to no college football playoffs. Bro, you lost to Northwestern.
41:55Shannon Sharpe:I don't even know if you can get into college football playoffs. if you only had one loss and you lost to them. Man, I mean, this was horrible. This is – it's hard to say this is James Franklin's worst loss because he's had so many worst loss. Right. Well, this is – You got to remember, too, those worst losses were against much, much better schools. Very, very – Nah, it ain't supposed to be no much. You Penn State. you do realize Penn State won national championship you know they put a lot of guys in the NFL Penn State used to put Penn State used to be Alabama putting guys in the NFL I know listen we're going back to LeVar Arrington we're going back to Kajana Carter Kerry Collins let me keep going hold on obviously we know Micah we know brother Abdul yeah Abdul it's more than that though.
42:58Oh yeah, for sure. Way more than that. That's just off the top of my head and what I can remember.
43:05Shannon Sharpe:But they have not been good at all. And I think they put up, I think I was reading today, they would owe Drane Franklin about$49 million if they were to buy him out. Wait, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, stop, stop, stop, stop. How much? $49 million. hey um what you think about me you getting into college coaching no i want no part of coaching i don't have the patience you got the who i don't have the patience you ain't patient enough for 49 49 million dollars i am not
43:40Shannon Sharpe:ain't no sense to me fully y 'all know who i am y 'all know who i am yeah so ain't no sense you know uh they had uh uh ocho saquon barkley they had dj carter Oh, yeah, I'm tripping. Saquon. I'm so – DJ Dozier, Kijana Carter, Saquon Barkley. Oh, they've had some running backs. I think Curtis Enos went there too. Curtis Enos, Curtis Enos. Man, Unc, you ain't said no receivers yet. I think Kyle Brady went to Penn State. Oh, hold on. KJ Hamler. Yeah. KJ Hamler, yeah. They had another – I had a dude. I forget. I think he came out a couple of years before me. Kurt Warner might be the best running back, but he ended up getting hurt.
44:28Shannon Sharpe:He went to Seattle. He was a monster.
44:36Oh. Wait, Chris Godwin went there? Yep. Hey, where did Curtis Conway go? USC. Okay, that's right. Yeah, that's right. That's right. You talking about Layla Ali's husband? Yeah, okay, okay. You're right. Yeah. Curtis, I'm thinking somebody else. Somebody else.
44:59Yeah.
45:01Shannon Sharpe:I don't know, Ocho. OJ McDuffie. Yeah, that's who, yeah. He went to Miami. He played for your Dolphins. And he had a turf toe injury. Yeah. Ended up having a turf toe injury, and they injected it, and they messed him up. I think he sued the Dolphins. Damn. Yeah. Ocho, the Indiana Hoosiers go in to Oregon, and they come away with a 30-20 victory, snapping the Ducks' 18-game home winning streak, holding them to only 64 yards in the second half. The victory is Indiana's second ever against a top-five opponent, joining the 1967 win over Purdue. it's the program first world road win over a top five opponent in programs history history hey hey listen that's one of the few games i wasn't able to watch obviously out here where i am in london i don't get i was able to get to see a few games the actual the main games i wasn't able to see the oregon game please explain to me with this being the one game i wasn't able to watch.
46:11How in the hell did Indiana beat Oregon, which I think is much better in the trenches, much better at the skill position, and hold them to how many points in the second half? It held them 64 yards. Oh, 64 yards. Wait, it must have been raining real bad, huh? It wasn't raining. No? Okay, okay. I'm just trying to get... I mean, Indiana had
46:33Shannon Sharpe:two guys that had 13 total tackles. They had two guys that had eight. They had two guys that had eight tackles. Oh, they got after Mojo. Well, let's see. Three, four, five, six. Six sacks, eight tackle for losses. Four QB hurries. Jesus. Gotta do it. They must have been blitzing. They must have been blitzing out the wazoo. They can get out there. Hey, to Pat McAfee, P-Mac, he picked it. Everybody else across the board went Oregon. Oregon. Pat McAfee, the only one picked Indiana to win? He picked Indiana. He know something. He know ball. He know ball. Look, Indiana's like, we saw a little bit of this last year, and we thought it was like an outlier.
47:19Shannon Sharpe:Man, they ain't going to do nothing. They're like, we tried to show we for real. Mm-hmm. And they backed it up. They're backing up last year, following up. They're consolidating in tennis. When you break serve, now you get to serve. Now can you consolidate it? Right. They're trying to consolidate last season with this season, and they're off to a great start. they're not a they're not no put this is not the indiana that you know that we grew that i grew up you know they had a few good players anthony thompson he came out with me a running back uh i think most most uh rushing touchdowns something like that but this team is really really good really really good it's gonna be i don't i don't know if uh ohio state or michigan's on their schedule, but they got a chance to go back, Ocho, to do it again.
48:08Yeah. Wait, what's Indiana record?
48:12Shannon Sharpe:6-0, number 17 in the country. Do they have any other ranked opponents left on their schedule, or is it pretty easy from this point on? Pull up their schedule. Let's see what they're looking like.
48:28Shannon Sharpe:They
48:33Shannon Sharpe:I don't know if they've already played Penn State, but if they do, that's a victory.
48:40Shannon Sharpe:I don't know if they played Penn, but that's a victory for them. Hell no. Okay. Ocho. Yeah. They got Michigan State at home, UCLA at home. They go at Maryland, at Penn State, Wisconsin at home, at Purdue. They can easily run the table. They can run that table, but I would say that UCLA game might be a trap game. UCLA playing better? Yeah, since they fired. Coach got fired? Yes, he got fired. Man, ever since he got fired, boy, they've been playing all world. Yeah, Rick and Dale appointed Rick Neuheisel's son is the interim coach, and he's done a great job. He's got him playing well. You know, the quarterback is playing a lot better.
49:28Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. Look, Sean Foster just wasn't getting it done. There's no other way around it. Because all I know is that those same players that he hadn't won a game with, somebody else came in and they won with them. Hey, what is that? Why does that always happen, huh? I don't know. When a coach gets fired in the middle of the season for some reason, the players respond a little better and play much and play well. I don't understand. I know coaches looking like, well, hell, why y 'all ain't do this when I was there? why didn't he play this way with this kind of effort? Maybe he wasn't coaching him up.
50:01Shannon Sharpe:Maybe it's a different philosophy, or maybe it's how you call him plays. Because I think Newhouse is calling the plays. Okay. Dang it.
50:15Shannon Sharpe:Michigan State, UCLA just dropped the hammer on them. And then they got UCLA following that up. Then they're at Maryland, at Penn State, Wisconsin, and then they got Purdue. so you know my college quarterback is the head coach at Michigan State too is he? yeah Jonathan Smith he was my quarterback at Oregon State then he was the head coach at Oregon State then he just got the job at Michigan State I think this is his second year maybe either second year yeah that's what so congratulations to IU go on the road and and knock off the number three Oregon Ducks by the score of 30-20. Held them to 64 yards in the second half.
51:03Coach Prime returned to the sidelines only four days after having surgery
51:08Shannon Sharpe:to remove blood clots. The CU Buffaloes get their second wins in the Coach Prime era over a ranked opponent, number 22 Iowa State Cyclones, 24-17. He apparently did not sit down during the entire game, and ESPN reported that an assistant on the sideline was following him around with a stool in case he needed it. Colorado linebacker Jeremiah Brown said, it gave us a reason to fight, a great reason to fight. Coach Prime had surgery on Tuesday. He came back that Wednesday morning after four-hour surgery, and he was hurt. He was limping on the field, hurting, still running around, still giving us all the energy we need.
51:48Shannon Sharpe:So I think that's all we needed to fight. Yeah He says there are some coaches out there make you want to run through a brick wall for it But you're high pressed were you with what you saw with buffaloes? Listen, I'm obviously I'm really impressed. I'm really impressed with him actually fighting They've had some games that they lost this year where everyone is really damn they counted them out They really count them out you go in there you plan against Another ranked opponent in Iowa State in ranked 22 and they fought they fought their tails off And I'm sure Prime having to come out of surgery, still being there, still being there, showing up, showing up for your players.
52:27And it gives you a little bit more will, gives you a little more want to as a player to want to fight, not only for your coach, you know, but for your teammates as well. And to show people like this ain't the same Colorado Buffalo. We're not the same Colorado Buffaloes, even though things aren't going well this season. We have some losses, but we want to show we can compete at this level, too, against ranked opponents. And I'm sure everybody in the mama, if you're a gambling man, you probably pick Iowa State to win this goddamn game. Of course. Yes.
52:58Shannon Sharpe:I mean, considering they had only beaten one ranked opponent in his tenure. And seemingly, for whatever reason, they don't play their absolute best when they play ranked opponents. So, yeah, if you're a gambling man, if you're a betting man, you absolutely would have picked Iowa State. And I was a little concerned. 37 rushes, 236 yards. But I thought Caden Salter played extremely well. He threw the ball extremely, extremely well today. They ran the ball well, 140 rush yards on 39 carries. The receiver had eight for 128. They played well, Ocho. This was the best. Look, we wanted a clean game too, no turnovers.
53:45Shannon Sharpe:Clean game. You know, they're not good enough to overcome that. Turnovers, yeah. They can't overcome turnovers. They can't. That's not who they are. I mean, you look. There are some games on their show. They're at Utah, Arizona at home, West Virginia on the road, Arizona State at home, K-State on the road. So Utah is always tough. Yes, every time, every year.
54:16Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, I was concerned. I was like, damn. See, can y 'all stop the run? Another 230-yard performance. You know, you don't normally win games. You let team run for 230 yards on you. Yeah. Because they possess the ball. So you have to be really, really good when you get the ball because they're running the ball like that. But somehow... CU won the time of possession. CU, I mean, the difference in the ballgame, Ocho, third downs. Iowa State was 2 of 12. Colorado was 7 of 15. And it gets you every time. Every single time. Third downs. Colorado was good in the penalty phase, Ocho. They didn't – it's 6 for 43.
55:02Shannon Sharpe:You could live with that. Iowa State had 7 for 59. Had one turnover, interception. Time of possession was damn near even. 29-57 for Iowa State, 30.03 for CU. But, yeah, CU, look, if you're going to get this kind of play out of Salter and they can run the football like this, they've got to do a better job of stopping the run. I mean, you're not going to have a whole lot of success giving up 230-plus yards. They ain't got that kind of meat and potatoes up there, man. They ain't got that kind of meat and potatoes up there. Well, they got a stun or something, Mocho. You know, you got to do something.
55:42Shannon Sharpe:Because if you stunt, you open up, you open up. You do. You do. But, I mean, Tyne got to be really, really impressed. I mean, really, really happy with his ball club. Obviously, going through what he's going through, that's not easy. But I noticed something. See, and I looked at him and I said, well, damn. I said, I know Tyne in on the sideline. He got one shoe on. I said, but he looked like he wearing, is he in his socks? but I thought it was a white sneaker. I mentioned it last week. I was like, damn. And they zoomed it, but they didn't zoom back in on it. So I was like, all right, I'm just going to chalk it up.
56:19Shannon Sharpe:Like, man, he got on a bigger shoe than the other one. But I was like, and come to find out, he was actually in his sock on the sideline. He had a shoe on the right foot, but no shoe, just his sock on the left foot. I was like, well, damn. And, you know, going through what he's going through, because I know a little bit, a lot about what he went through, especially at Jackson State and this last situation. It's tough, man. It's tough. You're like, man. But you talk about somebody that believes that if anybody can handle something like this to go through what he's gone through, he's the guy. He's a believer.
57:00Shannon Sharpe:He has the faith. But it's not easy. It's not easy. But his family, as he said, has a history of blood clots. I think he had an uncle or a past or something from blood clots. So blood clots run in his family. That seems to be hereditary. So it's going to be very, very interesting, man. I just – how much can that body – how much can that body take? I mean, you know, they're carrying a stool behind him in case he needs to sit down, fatigue. But if you just watched him, you'd have never knew he had surgery on. as serious as a surgery as he had on Tuesday. If you just watched the game, if you just watched him, he just, he looked like time.
57:45Shannon Sharpe:He looked normal. Yeah. He looked normal. Yeah. But obviously we know what he went through. I don't know the specific details of what they do to try to clean up blood clots. I mean, obviously they try to go in there and dissolve them. He's on blood thinners, probably going to be on those for the rest of his life. but this is a big win for him I think those kids did him a solid they did him a solid today I know he's very very proud of those kids because like he after the game he was talking to the reporter I don't know her name but he's like look God got me this is by the kids this is by the kids he didn't know that the kids storming the field gonna cost the athletic department 50k Listen, I know that athletic department is not worried about the little 50K.
58:37If we got to pay every time we play at home, we're willing to pay that 50K if we can get these results for every home game.
58:45Shannon Sharpe:They're going to start increasing the dough. 50K now, they'll probably double it next time. I mean, look, that's a ranked opponent. You hadn't had very many wins over ranked opponents and it's a home victory. You lost at home to Georgia Tech.
59:04Shannon Sharpe:you lost at home. No, you lost at home by three to BYU, which was a ranked opponent that you really should have won that game. Could have easily won the Georgia Tech game. Maybe the season looks a little different. They need to string some wins together, though. They need to string some wins together, find a way to go get, to beat a Utah team. I don't know Utah's record. I haven't paid a whole lot of attention to them, But they need to find a way to try to put two or three wins together. Go up to Utah and play extremely well, take care of the football, turn them over and get a win and then come home against Arizona and try to put two or three – you know, try to get some wins, Ocho, and get bowl eligible.
59:44Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. Let's see, one, two, three. Right now they're three and three. So I think you need six wins to become bowl eligible. Right. So they're going to have to win – Ocho, they're going to have to win one of these road games. they're going to have to win one of these road games to become bowl eligible. So Utah, West Virginia, K-State, and you're going to have to, you know, you're going to have to hold serve at home. You got Arizona and Arizona State at home. You're going to have to win both of those, and you're going to have to win one game on the road at least. That's a tough task, especially because you just called out too now.
1:00:22K-State ain't no joke.
1:00:23Shannon Sharpe:No, no, K-State ain't no easy to win. Joke. Nope. Virginia Rich Rodriguez you know they're not the same West Virginia in his first tenure where you know where they had Pat White and those guys were you know Tavon Austin and all those guys all in playing in space I think Steve Slayton I think that was the running back's name I think that's his name they're not that but they're tough to beat at home and so We'll see what time have in store for them, but they definitely need to get bowl eligible. They need to win three more games, and I think they're more than capable of doing that. Ocho, after the game, Coach Prime found out schools get fined 50K for rushing the field.
1:01:13Shannon Sharpe:But I love to see it. I really do. Is it a fine for rushing the field? What is it? 50 what? For rushing the field? Yes, sir. How's it 50 ,000 rushing the field? Who made that a rule? Excuse me? Come on, man. That ain't right. I mean, these kids, well, we have 50 ,000, right? We can chip in. Let's chip in. That's how it was when I grew up. You know, we're going somewhere. Before you get in the car with some gas, you got to chip in. I think it's 250 I think it's 250 in the SEC As Chetkin said I think it's 250 ,000 if they rush to fill in the SEC The SEC got different kind of money They got different kind of money So obviously the price is a little different True Look I think the thing is Ocho is that you know sometimes students You know, they have, you know, some of them that got ID and they're able to drink.
1:02:23Shannon Sharpe:And sometimes, you know, I think you're trying to protect the student and you're trying to check the players. You don't want to look at Blunt's situation. You know, you don't want situations like that. So you really want to protect the players and you want to protect the student body. So I get why they're doing it. I do. I really do. But it's hard to tell a college kid that's excited, been screaming their lungs out for the last two and a half, three hours. and we just get a big victory. No, I don't run the field. What they can do is have security when you know you're going to win a game against a ranked opponent and they're excited.
1:03:00You got to have security. You don't know you're going to win no game against no ranked opponent when you're unranked? No, I'm saying they got to already be prepared and have security lined up around that goddamn stadium.
1:03:10Shannon Sharpe:You got 50 ,000 security people? Because who them 25? Did you see? Go back and take a look at the film. The security is talking about, stop, and them kids coming right by them.
1:03:25is 500k for storming the field hey think about that how do you control a stadium full of college
1:03:33Shannon Sharpe:kids and tell them not to storm storm the field i tell you what how do you control that you can't because i guarantee you if i don't know if if auburn is ranked but and if alabama plays auburn and they will in the Iron Bowl and if Alabama has to go to Auburn guess what's going to happen if Auburn wins they storm in the field and guess what I don't know if Georgia plays Georgia Tech but guess what happens if Georgia Tech beats Georgia they storm in the field yeah it is what it is and guess what if Michigan beats Ohio State and who writes the check that comes from the college the athletic director It comes from probably the budget, the athletic department.
1:04:21Hey, they might as well go ahead and write it as soon as the game over. As soon as them kids storm that field and that clock is zero, they might as well get the check writing.
1:04:31Shannon Sharpe:Mississippi State was fined$500 ,000 by the SEC for its fans rushing the field following a home win over then ranked number 12 Arizona State back in September. Remember, guess what? If they play Ole Miss, you might as well should have gave them a million dollars. Because if they play Ole Miss at home, they're going to storm the field again. They're going to storm the field again. Absolutely. And guess what? They got Texas. Let them beat Texas. They're going to storm the field again. Yeah. And the thing is, is that, man, you ought to sort of out look at the security. I said, y 'all better get out of the way before y 'all get ran over.
1:05:07Shannon Sharpe:Even the women coming up out the stand like, hey, we're going to the field. yeah they booked it you saw you saw the kid that was stuck up under the goal post from uh see you yeah i think i think i think i think i'm just watching them come off the sides okay like they stormed them like this like the truth stormed the beach at normandy that's how they look coming over the railings but damn some little kid was stuck i guess that would be cool to ocho hey that that'd be that'd be hey that'd be dope can you imagine you think you'd be able to make it? Make what? Let's say what happened. You had a game and you watch it in the stands and all the kids throw them to field.
1:05:47You going to throw them with them? Man, I ain't moving.
1:05:51Shannon Sharpe:Man, I jump. Hey, the last thing I need to do is jump down and my hip pop out of place. Nah. I would say how I got down in that stadium, that's how I get my black ass up out of that stadium. I walk down those steps, I'm going to walk back up, hit the exit, and come on down. Hell nah. Hell nah, man. Man, I ain't young no more, Ocho. Hey, I don't be doing all that foolishness. Oh, man. I'm going to let you have that, Ocho. Hey, you can take my hips. You can take my knees. You can take my everything. Well, I might need to, considering you can't use them to do nothing else. Who? Man, you crazy? I mean, not from the looks of it.
1:06:37Shannon Sharpe:You might have my hips. Why you bulljiving? Hold on, hold on, hold on. Did you see me today? Yeah, I did. Unfortunately. Let me finish. Let me finish. Okay. I play a dependent what? You play a dependent? Hold on. I play a dependent what? Yeah, you play a dependent position. Okay, wait, wait. And I'm trying to be careful because I can't talk about, you know what I'm trying to say? Yeah, yeah, yeah. I know your quarterback. Yes. Yeah, I'm trying to be safe. But I have fun. I had fun. I was out there. And you know what? My dumb ass. Oh, I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to curse. I should know why I'm out there running full speed like an idiot.
1:07:18Not understanding that individual doesn't play with us. Where I'm going. So I'm out there. I'm out there going full speed. I'm like, oh, shoot. It ain't the time and all. But it was fun. I had me a good old time. I don't know what you're doing. It looks suspect to me. I know. Of course it's going to look suspect to you when you're not on the sideline watching in person. I watch it close enough You know what it is You see how fast I still am though? You can't see that
1:07:44Shannon Sharpe:I saw somebody named Cinco Win MVP That's the other team And the girl that was on your team She mossing folks That wasn't my team That's the other team The one who was doing all the dancing Yes She played flag football for real I had to ask Fitzpatrick Where'd she come from? Oh, I didn't know that. Because I was like, damn, she can catch. Hey, catch. I'm like, she can really catch. Hey, that was fun. It was a lot of influencers. A lot of influencers. An influencer I didn't even know they could ball like that. Duke Dennis? Man, I'm like, but Duke, boy, you ain't play no sports? You ain't play no ball?
1:08:28All them boys, who, man, J. Cinco. J. Cinco out there, hey, he look like goddamn, he look like Earl Little. I'm not Earl Little. Earl Thomas. He was all over the place. That's how you supposed to have to be in. No, no, no. There's only somebody. Come on now. You saw my interception? You saw my interception? I grabbed that thing with my hand though. Oh, hold on.
1:08:56Shannon Sharpe:When you going to bring trophy back? You participating in all this stuff and they brought one trophy home to nightcap. Hey, these are not individual games. These are team games I'm playing. There's only so much I can do. I can tell you what I can do. I'm trying to figure out what team you was on because you didn't help nobody. I did what I could do. I felt like A.J. Brown. What you want me to do? Not much. I felt like A.J. Brown. But I ain't cut off. I ain't say nothing because I understand. Chad, what's your thing, Chad? The Chad understand, too. No, the Chad don't understand. They say you was on some bull diggity today, Ocho.
1:09:30Shannon Sharpe:Not me. Hey, everything came my way. They say you was good and terrible. Hey, everything came my way. I snagged that. But did you see my feet? You saw my feet. I still got it like real natural in the back of the end zone. You seen that? Yeah. Hey, my hands was nice. My feet, hey. And the dudes were like, hey, how you still run like that at 57? Ain't nobody say that. Yeah, I was moving. Ocho, Ocho, I mean, for a guy that played at the level in which you played at, you don't look real athletic.
1:10:04Shannon Sharpe:I'm just saying Chad what y 'all think Did Ocho look athletic to you guys Hey I don't know I don't know what you was watching I was watching you I made sure Ocho this twice I've seen you in celebrity events twice The basketball you say you was facilitating Yeah I was facilitating I don't know what you was doing today Hey catching everything that was thrown to me and picking stuff off on defense. I say, well, damn. Hey, I look good, bro. No, you didn't, Ocho. I mean, no, you didn't, Chad. Hey.
1:10:45Hey, listen. Hey, listen. I got to be careful. I have fun. I have fun. You have fun.
1:10:52Shannon Sharpe:You is what we call a Chad that happens to be a Karen's husband. so that's how you got your name so you man i say man that's for real oh man you need to get your man you need to get nail fight there man you need to get your boy ocho i said let me see what's going on hey um listen i said it's bad out there bull driving one bull driving listen i can't complain i can't argue if it come to me economy if it don't there's nothing i can do there's nothing to say that's not the place to be acting a fool nfl invited me out here you know they prayed They paid a pretty penny for me to come here and enjoy my four days in London.
1:11:29That's all I could do. That's all you did.
1:11:34Shannon Sharpe:What they paid you to do, that's what you did. Come enjoy yourself. You enjoy yourself. Because I told you, hey, boy. I tell you what. I tell you what. Tomorrow I'm going to see your Broncos play at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. And if they don't show up, you better not say foot or ball. If they get beat by the Jets, you better not say nothing tomorrow. All I know. Because I gave my all today. Well, that wasn't much. Huh? That wasn't much. It don't look like much, but there's only so much that I can do. I can't. Hey, maybe it's too many cigars. Maybe you need to cut back to one a day. Hey, speaking of cigars, right, huh?
1:12:14Boy, I ain't come out no plays. I play offense and defense. I ain't even get tired. I played the whole game. You wasn't doing enough to get tired. No, I was. No, you weren't. I was running full speed. Mm-mm. You talking about I wasn't doing enough. I control what I can control. If that's your full speed, you ain't beating nobody that you talked. You weren't watching. You weren't watching. I watched. No, you weren't watching. You ain't watching.
1:12:40Shannon Sharpe:Chad, what y 'all think about Ocho's performance today? Honestly, what y 'all think about Ocho's performance? It's only so much like I do. I'm trying to feel. Ocho, somebody say you need to just sell cigars on the sideline.
1:12:55Hey, listen, people, people, if people know football, if they understand football and you watching, then you already know. I have to be careful. I can't say what I want to say. You know, it's just, but I have fun. I know one thing, I'm fast as hell.
1:13:13Shannon Sharpe:All I know is you said you're going to score you about three or four touchdowns. That's what I chat. That's what our listeners, that's what our subscribers were expecting. Can I ask you something? Do you want me to do... How am I going to throw... See, I'm trying to be careful. Okay. Right. Right. I mean, you want me to throw it to myself and then run and go catch? No. Okay. You wasn't getting open. Okay. That's... What we're not going to do is we're not going to play with my feet like that. That's what we're not going to do. You walking. We're not... Man, out there walking in his rows. Hey, hey.
1:13:54I would put them up and put them down.
1:13:56Shannon Sharpe:Hey, I'm trying to think. What year was that? That might have been like 2009. What happened? We actually had an NFL flag football game. For real? We had like Marino, Montana. Yeah. It was me, T.O.
1:14:14Shannon Sharpe:Prime. Y 'all playing for real? Y 'all playing for real? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, okay. Hey, them boys, they was out there playing hard, boy. They used to have a flag football game during the Super Bowl on MTV. For real? Yeah. Like Pro vs. Joe or something? It was me, Warren Moon, Dan Marino, Nelly.
1:14:43Shannon Sharpe:Lachey used to be married to Jessica Simpson. Lala, Nicole, Richie. Oh, yeah. Why they stop doing that, man? I don't know. But we read a play because Nelly, man, Nelly Athletic is hell not. Yeah, Nelly's a play. Yeah. But anyway, so the last play, they say this is the last play. Whoever, if we score a touchdown, we win. If they knock it down, they win. Right. Man, they put Nelly outside. Warren said, let's run a nine. Right. Warren threw it up, Nelly ran up on it About 50 yards Nelly fast, huh? Yeah, Nelly athletic For real, for real Oh yeah It's so funny, you get to see Some of these dudes that Obviously they're streamers, that's what they do And then I actually see them Duke Dennis and JC I'm like, wait a minute, wait a minute Boy, if y 'all boys gonna put that camera down Boy, y 'all could do something with that I think Duke Dennis was in the military For real?
1:15:52Shannon Sharpe:I think so Yeah I didn't know that A military would take a different type of discipline Yeah He's going to be screaming at me Yeah Yeah I caught me a Goldball He used to be married to Sophia Vergara Joe Marjonello I don't know how to say his last name But he was married to Sophia Vergara Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I beat him on the goalball show. I run a stud of nine on him. Hey. Man, I felt bad. I said, man, I know I just ain't run no stud of nine on this man. And this man probably ain't never played football or hasn't played football forever. Yeah. That was fun. Hey, Fitzpatrick was over there, man, man, throwing dimes.
1:16:44He throwing dimes.
1:16:45Shannon Sharpe:The chat say Jay Cinco look like prime and Ocho. What? Hold on. He ain't look like prime on me. He look like Ocho. The man catching touchdown. He look like Travis Hunter. He out there catching touchdowns and picking it off. Hold on. Hold on. What they got to do with me? I didn't see none of that from you. What they got to do with you is that Jay Cinco, he might be the real Ocho Cinco. Okay. Okay. But listen, they throwing him the ball all the time. I see him picking it off. He playing like Ed Reed. Well, he wasn't picking it off. He in center field going to get it. Listen, you see, I'm trying to understand what you want me to do.
1:17:27I want you to do more than what you did.
1:17:29Shannon Sharpe:I don't know what you need to do, but just do more than what you did. You know what that would take? That would take, for me, acting a goddamn fool on the sideline and saying, get me the ball every goddamn time. You used to it. You done it before. Do it again. That's it. In real games on Sunday at 1 o 'clock. That's a real game. You making us look bad. No, I didn't. They might not invite us back to nothing. No, they're going to invite us back. No, they're going to invite you back. They're going to invite me. I ain't doing nothing. I ain't doing nothing that required me to do anything above a walk.
1:18:02I'm coach. But listen, you know what you got to understand is how I have to play it safe is the fact that they keep inviting me to these things. I don't want to be, I don't want them to remember the old person. Because if it was the old Chad, I would have been snapping on the sideline. I don't want that because I want to keep getting invited to things like this. To be able to have fun and enjoy myself. Man, I remember I coached in an all-star game. I can't make it about me. Okay, I appreciate that. I got to be careful. Got to be careful.
1:18:32Shannon Sharpe:Man, I coached in an all-star game in Indy. NBA all-star game with the celebs. But it got to be careful. Yeah. Yeah, I had Puka. I had Mike on my team, Jewel Lloyd. Yeah. Jennifer Hudson. No, Jennifer Hudson was on the other team. But anyway, man, my knees and back hurt so bad. All that standing, I said, I don't know how them coaches do it. Mm-mm. And you had anybody that could hoop? Man, Puka. Oh, yeah, I forgot Puka knew how to play. Yeah. uh micah micah had micah had like 30 points like 20 rebounds jewel lloyd yeah we had we had a couple of hoopers yeah yeah yeah yeah a couple yeah and you know you need to see who um that goddamn t higgins and davante adams oh yeah oh my god you boy is nice oh joe that's like oh joe that's how your boy used to who come on i gave it up don't do that don't do that oh joe okay you got you Show me some footage.
1:19:36I know you got VHS tape. Show me some VHS tape. We didn't record stuff like that. I have to go off your word. I don't lie. Hold on. Let me tell you something. If I say I did something, you can go to YouTube, and you can actually see it. You can see it.
