In short

Nightcap Hour 1 covers early-season NFL fallout and quarterback pressure—starting with New York Giants QB Jaxson Dart being ruled out for the season after a knee injury (MCL/PCL/meniscus). The hosts debate what the Giants should do at QB (Jameis Winston as backup, possible trades like Russell Wilson/Jimmy Garoppolo, and why finding a “game changer” is unlikely). They also discuss Deshaun Watson’s message to Cleveland fans ahead of the Browns’ home game vs the Panthers, focusing on fan tension and the need for performance to earn support. Finally, they broaden into why injuries and non-contact issues seem more frequent, and how modern training/workloads may contribute.

Guests

No guest interview segments appear in the transcript; the show is hosted by Chad “Ocho” Johnson and Isiah “Iso” Joe Johnson (co-hosts). They reference “Uncle Joe” as a host persona.

Key claims

Dart’s injury is worse than first reported; Winston’s turnover risk makes it hard for the Giants to overcome poor QB play. Watson says he doesn’t want to be at war with fans; Cleveland’s boos depend on early results. Injury frequency may be higher due to training/workload and reporting.

Notable examples

Jameis Winston’s “turnover machine” reputation; comparison to teams that can survive QB injury (e.g., KC, Cincinnati with Flacco). Panthers scoring trends (37 then 34 points) and Browns needing to match.

6:35Shannon Sharpe:Please drink responsibly and be safe. The worst possible outcome from the New York Giants, Jackson Dart is out for the season with a damage to his MCL, PCL, and meniscus. Despite the reports, John Harbaugh isn't ruling Dart out for the entire 22-26 season. Let's take a listen to what Harbs had to say. It's obviously been reported your quarterback suffered a pretty significant injury. How big of all it's been to be without him? Yeah, it's a big loss for sure. I mean, it's your starting quarterback. It's a tough loss.

7:14Chad Johnson:What's the timeline? Regular season, at least I would say. He's out for the regular season, John?

7:25It's a knee. It's a knee. Knee injury. When you say regular season, are you hopeful that maybe he can come back for postseason? Is that what you're saying? I think I said it. Yeah. I said it. Regular season.

7:42Shannon Sharpe:They kept prying, trying to get into specifics of what he said knee. There's several, there's ACL, there's patella, there's MCL, there's meniscus, there's PCL. There's a lot of things going on in the knee, and they tried to get Harbs to narrow it down. But you saw he kept evading it, saying it's his knee. He also said he's out for the regular season. Well, you know what I mean? If you can come back for the postseason? John Harbaugh in his most realistic expectations. It's hard for me to believe that he thinks he can make. I don't know how many teams are equipped to make a postseason run without their starting quarterback.

8:16Shannon Sharpe:I'm going to open up for you, Joe, you and Ocho. Ocho, what do you think? This is the worst possible scenario. They said four to six weeks because that's what they thought it was, an MCL injury. Come to find out, it's much worse than what they previously thought. Well, it's bad. It's very bad for the New York Giants. It's bad for Giants fans. It's bad for the Giants organization. Jackson Dart gives them their best opportunity to have a chance to win, to have a chance to win. Now, as far as the postseason is concerned, it all depends on how Jackson Dart would have played throughout this season.

8:49Obviously, having to start your backup and Jameis Winston, we know that we've seen Jameis Winston before in Tampa Bay have a very good season. But the only problem is he's a turnover machine. He can go on a heater, though. Uncle Joe. He can go in a heater and have some crazy games. He can string together four or five games and play unbelievable throwing for an enormous amount of yards. But within that timetable and time frame, he'll throw three picks, four picks, five picks. And so he turns the ball over a lot. Listen, he's at the helm now. He's at the helm. But what they did do, what they do have is Harbaugh has Joe Flacco, if I'm not mistaken.

9:28Wasn't Joe Flacco traded to the Giants? That's a fake account. It was? Oh, man, I'm on the plane. I thought it really happened. There ain't nobody giving no fourth round pick for Joe Flacco. Okay, okay. But listen, you think about Harbaugh and having familiarity with Joe Flacco, I'm not sure if that will happen. It probably wouldn't be a fourth round. I think it would make sense as far as with Jameis Winston and the struggles he may have with turning the ball over. right now you still have a chance. It's early in the season. You're going into week three. You see how James Winston plays. If it's not good enough or to your liking, you can always make that trade with Flacco, if need be, because you're familiar with him as a quarterback.

10:15What do you think, Joe?

10:18Chad Johnson:I think it's very unfortunate for the New York Giants, Uncle Ocho, and I think it's unfortunate for Jackson Dart, considering the fact that he came into this season already off of injury. trying to get back, trying to bring that pizazz back to New York, him and Scatterboot, which they obviously got off to a great start against my Cowboys. But man, to have this devastating injury happen, I mean, for the Giants, what do they do? I don't think you can go and get some young electric quarterback because then it's probably going to be hard to get rid of them. You know what I mean?

10:54Shannon Sharpe:I don't think there's nothing out there available. that and even even Jameis at his absolute best Ocho when he's had that historic season through for over 5 ,000 yards they still missed the playoffs he's not that quarterback he's never the most athletic quarterback now he's even less athletic than he was back then and but guess what yes his turnover rate is still just as high yeah which is which makes the situation even worse because you're a team that's under man to begin with, and now you have a guy at the helm. Yeah, he'll put the ball up. He'll give his guys an opportunity, but he'll also give the other guys an opportunity.

11:32Shannon Sharpe:So he's an equal opportunity. Yeah, he worked for the EEOC. He's an equal opportunity. He'll have some everybody. You get a pick. You get a touchdown. You get a pick. You get a fumble recovery. You get a hand up for a touchdown. Oh, he all about that? Oh, yeah, absolutely. But that's who he is, And I think the thing is, you know, Bruce Arians had a quote saying, no risk it, no biscuit. But I think the thing is you have to take calculated risk. Sometimes I think Jameis throws a little bit, throws too much caution to the wind. Like, I don't care what happens, I'm throwing it. Yeah. He's going to let it rip down.

12:08Hey, we talk about a quarterback, you know, pushing the ball down the field. He's going to give you some chances. So as a receiver, you like that he's very aggressive with the ball, but he puts the ball in harm's way too much.

12:20Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. Too much. Yes. And that doesn't go over well. You know, Jameis sometimes, he's starting to turn the ball over. It goes over bad like passing gas in church. That don't go over well, guys. That's Jameis. The turnover, Joe, they find it good. Okay, you have a Matt Ryan night. You throw four touchdowns with one turnover, I can live with that. But if you two and three, two touchdowns, three turnovers, it's hard. There are not very many teams that's equipped to overcome poor quarterback play or turn or mistake prone Play from the quarterback. There aren't very many teams equipped like that Maybe Kansas City could overcome that Joe Burr can have a bad, you know, I'll have throw a pick Maybe fumble and they can overcome it Josh Allen team, but there aren't a whole they're not Six teams in the league that's really equipped when their quarterback doesn't play well or turn the ball over They're able to overcome that you know it's funny now that you mentioned that about about the teams at 30 32 teams in nfl and you look at the backup everyone doesn't have a situation like kyler murray going kyler murray going down and carson was coming in and having the success that he did lock in seattle you look i would just get ready to say that drew lock in seattle but also think about this look at the supporting cast that those number two quarterbacks are going into If you're just decent, just decent in having that kind of supporting cast around you, those are the type of supporting cast that elevate the quarterback play.

13:49The quarterback doesn't have to elevate them. Every team isn't equipped with that kind of talent. That's elite talent surrounding you, especially with your number one receivers.

13:58Shannon Sharpe:Especially when you look at Cincinnati. If Joe Burrow would, and hopefully he seems very, very healthy, knock on wood. But if he were to miss a game or two, Joe Flacco can keep you afloat for a game or two. Oh, yeah. because now you look at their defense and the way they play with Sexy Dexy and Knight chasing down everything. They're equipped to withstand that. But you have to have certain elements when your quarterback goes down. You have to have a defense that's very, very stingy. And like you said, you got a Chase. You got a Higgins. You got guys that can elevate the quarterback play around him.

14:32Shannon Sharpe:You be in prime position. Drew Locke, you look at his situation in Seattle. Look at what he has defensively. Look at the weapons that he possessed offensively. Now they can withstand Sam Donald being out for a game or two. Everybody is not equipped to handle that. So we'll see. So what are you thinking, Joe? What do you think the Giants? You think they go out? Are they secure with Jameis? Or are they scraping like, what can we do? Is there somebody out there that we can trade for that can give us an opportunity? I'm not saying that, you know, hey, win us 10 games. but at least keep us competitive.

15:10Chad Johnson:Yeah, I think they're going to look, Ocho. They're going to check the market. Now, I don't know if you're going to find somebody who's going to be able to come in right away and keep things going kind of like how Jackson Dart did, but I like Jamison as a backup, but starting and leading my team, Ocho, it's kind of the same thing we've been saying over and over. Yeah, he'll have games where he might throw for three touchdowns, maybe four touchdowns. But hell, if you got just as many picks, bro, sometimes, you know, it's kind of, you know, it ain't good for you. But I don't really know what's out there for the Giants, honestly.

15:42Chad Johnson:I really don't. I don't know what they can go get. Like I said, I've been hearing a lot of rumblings of different quarterbacks. I just can't see them bringing in a real game changer because it's like Jackson Dart is our quarterback. It don't matter. You know what I mean? It don't matter who comes in here and plays well. This is our quarterback. I got a question. Go ahead. and y 'all can correct me if I'm wrong what you think about Russell Wilson coming back no yes no maybe wasn't he with the Giants

16:11Shannon Sharpe:last year hey listen he knows the system maybe Russell Wilson coming back that's a different system that's right that's right so you know I'm going back to Joe Flacco I'm going listen hardball system offensively you know even though hardball is the defensive guy right Well, actually, he was a special teams coach in Philly and got the job. So he's more of a manager. He lets his offensive coordinator call plays. He lets his defensive coordinator call plays. He doesn't really interfere. He's listening to what's going on. I'm sure he makes suggestions. No, I think in this situation we probably should run it.

16:49Shannon Sharpe:No, I think we should pass it. I think we should play this coverage. No, I like that coverage. He's more of a delegator or an overseer as opposed to being so much of hands-on. that's what I would deduce from watching, observing him for all these years. I don't really know him that well. Obviously I've met him, excuse me, Chad, being in Baltimore and going around and being, so I know him a little bit, not like I know probably some of the other guys that, you know, probably like in Denver, I know the coaches cause I, you know, I'm very familiar with Denver and only spent a couple of years in Baltimore.

17:19Shannon Sharpe:But that's the thing when your quarterback goes down so early in the season and you don't really get a chance to get a rhythm. Ain't nobody got a rhythm before now. All of a sudden, Joe and Ocho, we got a whole new quarterback in here. We got to change because what Jackson Dart is good at is his legs and mobility. Jameis Winston is horrible. That play the other night with Jameis, when everybody has vacated, Jackson Dart is going to pick up 15, 20 yards on that. Jameis Winston got tackled for a two-yard loss, got sacked for a two-yard loss. That is the difference between these two. I tell you what Jameis will give you.

17:58What's that? He gonna be entertaining as hell. I tell you that. He gonna be, I'm talking about it with his feel on the play. He gonna make some amazing plays at times, even though he's not a dual threat, he gonna make some amazing throws at times, but it's the mistakes. Oh, he'll do a threat

18:13Shannon Sharpe:is just in the turnover department. He'll throw a pick and fumble. He'll do that, I'm just saying. It all depends on what you mean by dual threat. Right, right, right.

18:22Chad Johnson:and i think jameson he a great leader on that outro but you know they need they need great football players the quarterback position yeah i mean all that's fine and dandy you know i'll be fired up here when i hear him say one of them speeches you know what i mean so we go out there get our eyes beat out joe the same the same wall that we're willing to jump over we jumping back over bad back here is something terrible oh yeah they got some work to do boy i know it's very unfortunate though damn yeah it's it's it's it's injuries injuries are are very like i said ocho

19:02Shannon Sharpe:you really didn't have to experience that but as somebody had went through injuries early in his career but it's tough right and you like man i say my prayers i eat i'm living right damn why this can't happen to me. Hold on. You know, I did experience that. Remember? In the playoffs. First round of the playoffs. I'm saying you personally, you, I mean, injury happened to you. Yeah, you had Carson go down the first play. Yeah, hey, I would hurt. I would hurt. Hey, Joe, my quarterback went down, Joe.

19:30Chad Johnson:Yeah. And they was allowing the Steelers to dictate what we wanted to do offensively. Because once your starting quarterback goes out, the play calling changes. The play calling changes. So they were a little bit more vanilla, which I think they shouldn't have been because we have a veteran quarterback in John Kitten at the time. Man, let's go. What we doing? And they letting them people double and triple. Man, Joe, boy, halftime came, Joe. And I was getting the IV. Man, Joe, I snatched that shit. Man, Joe, I was hot.

19:58Shannon Sharpe:And see, me being the person that I am, I had that story. I could have witnessed it and said, man, Ocho, I could have fooled at halftime.

20:07Chad Johnson:Yeah, yeah. Yeah, you spend everything in the home for consumption. But listen, hey, Joe, you got to think now. Joe, I've never had a winning season. I've been there since 2001. You mean finally, after four, five years, Joe, we finally have a good season. We stringing it. I'm talking about from week one, Joe. I mean, week to week, we going crazy offensively. And all of a sudden, you know, we have a small mishap. The starter quarterback goes down and everything changes.

20:37Shannon Sharpe:Like, come on. What do you think? Jimmy G is a free agent. You think Jimmy G is a viable option? You think the 49ers will be willing? Based on Brock Purdy's history, I'm not trading Matt Jones because I know I got a very confident quarterback in Matt Jones that if something were to happen to Brock Purdy, say, for three or four weeks, I know Matt Jones can keep the ship steady. I also know that if something were for an extended period of time, I believe in Matt Jones. Matt Jones has led a team to the playoffs. Matt Jones played well in the absence of Brock Purdy. So I know what I got in him. And plus, I don't have to have somebody come in and I have to teach them the system.

Read the full transcript

21:15Shannon Sharpe:Matt Jones knows the system. J.J. McCarthy, is he a viable option? I don't think he's a viable option because I don't want two young quarterbacks on my roster because eventually I'm going to have to get rid of one of them, Ocho. They're not going to be – one is not going to be happy backing up the other. They're very close. Hell, they might have came out the same year. No, no, Jackson started his second year. This is J.J. McCarthy, third year. So they are a year apart. Nah. So. Hey, I like it. Who was that that said Jimmy G? Was that you, Unk, or Joe? Me.

21:46Chad Johnson:Nah, it was Unk. Yeah, I like that. What about Joe Milton? Better by trading the Cowboys.

21:52Shannon Sharpe:Cowboys, Joe, you looking to make a deal? Nah, hey, I like Jimmy G. I don't think. Hey, Jimmy might be shooting porn right now, but we go ahead and get him off that set. Yeah, we get him off old browsers. He don't need to be on there. What you know about browsers?

22:09Chad Johnson:Anyway, anyway, yeah, yeah. Oh, my bad. Oh, is that a for real?

22:18Hey, hey, listen.

22:21Chad Johnson:I don't got the Giants going for Joe Milger. It's going to cause too many problems, Ocho, meaning he goes to New York, he plays well, and the fans get behind him. Man, y 'all know how this thing going to play out. Yeah. Yeah. They ain't trying to deal with that, bro.

22:39Shannon Sharpe:I'm just trying to figure out with all the protections the NFL has afforded that one position it's similar to the quarterbacks get hurt more now than they did when they didn't protect them that's because they protect them too damn much

22:54Chad Johnson:they can't even play in the preseason so the first time I've been saying this I don't know how long I've been saying this but the first time you put that car on the freeway during the regular season hey man it's gonna have some kinks in it you're gonna have to take it to the shop a couple times get it fixed then put it back out there that's pretty much what's happening man you know these boys gotta play man they gotta play I hate it I hate it I don't understand how every time somebody get hit even though Jackson darts on it was unfortunate he was up in the air it was a high low it was a high low I don't know, man.

23:39Every week. We in week two. Every week. I wish Ash could tell me how many people are hurt since week one has started. We only in week two. They haven't even made it halfway through the season yet, man. God, Lee. Ocho, and think about it.

23:54Chad Johnson:We talk about key guys. Ocho, we ain't just talking about the guy that's not going to make

24:00Shannon Sharpe:the headlines. We talk about quarterbacks. We talk about starters. Be it wide receiver, be it O-line, D-line, something like that. We're not talking about the guy that are backup that's being lost. And both times, my MCL, I had kind of got my once I had got dude caught me from the side in the Super Bowl and sprained my MCL. And the other one, I got slung down. I caught a touchdown, got slung down and my cleat scraped like you hit a golf swing. Yeah. Got me. And you me?

24:37Shannon Sharpe:got me just like that it's the freakiest stuff i mean some of the stuff i look back and i watch film i'm like oh yeah i probably should have told my knee on that one and then the least little stuff got me

24:51Chad Johnson:that's great hey you got lucky old joe yeah yeah you got very very lucky no no no you have to understand i i really wasn't luck too on the joe you have to think about it right even though i was smaller frame i still played the game very reckless i played reckless joe so i didn't really care about injuries and i i i would die on this hill and i think it's because i was able i i call it building a callus i calcified my body to an extent and i i practiced and i practiced and i ran and i ran i did scout team i'm dying i did special team just to keep just to keep myself going so once the season came man i was way able to withstand everything and man hey hey joe them boys told me told my you know what up boy i'm talking about hits getting i mean helmet flying off all type of stuff and i i get up and i get up talking trash just never got hurt i don't know why it's a

25:46Shannon Sharpe:different like i said i think i think now it's hard for me to gauge like when i first came in in the early 90s because we didn't have the access and unless it was like a major i mean people didn't talk about their backups or the third team of guys getting injured. Now, they report everything, so I don't know if there's more or less, or we have more access, more visibility, 24-hour coverage, we're able to see it. You can see every game. Before, if the game wasn't on in your area, you ain't see it. You can go to this. You better go to a sports bar. You damn sure wasn't going to be able to see it at your house.

26:27Shannon Sharpe:So with that being said, I don't know if it's more or less. I think there are some injuries that there are more of. I think there's more Achilles injuries now, Ocho, than when you and I played. Or maybe they're just getting reported more. But it's just hard for me to believe that it's not more. Because I'm like, damn, I remember a handful of guys, but there weren't a whole bunch of guys tearing Achilles like they do now. No, I think statistically it's much more. many more players, even though the game, they're trying to protect players even more than they did in the past. I think the injuries have skyrocketed, skyrocketed, as opposed to even though they've implemented stuff and handicapped most defensive players from playing with free will as they did during our era, you know, your era and my era, just people are getting hurt even more.

27:14And most of the time, it's non-contact injuries.

27:17Chad Johnson:I mean, I don't know. Which I think it is. I think it's more the training regimens that some of these guys, the lack of training. Like, I just don't know, because you got to think, in basketball, we probably had over the last, what, three, four years, we've had the most Achilles tears probably ever.

27:33Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, Joe, the only guy that I can remember tearing his Achilles is Dominique. I'm talking about Big Star. You remember Dominique? Yeah, yeah, yeah. That was really the only guy that I heard of that tore his Achilles. Now, I know that maybe some lesser guys tore, but the way we see now Tyrese Halliburton and we see JT. Dane Dolly. Yeah, like, and talking about, like, boom,

27:52Chad Johnson:Boom, boom, boom. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. So I don't know, man. I don't know what it is. I don't know if it's, is it too much of a workload? Is it not enough? You know, versus - Honestly, I don't think it's enough, Joe. Yeah. I don't think it's enough. Hey, on them two days, them two days back then, you know, you're taking your body through a ringer. You're taking your body through a ringer. So by the time it gets to football season, by the time it gets to preseason, boy, you already primed and ready to go, boy. You primed and ready to go.

28:22Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, I think it's a combination. I think guys, Joe, me personally, I don't think guys give their bodies enough to a chance to work because you see guys as soon as the season over with Ocho Joe, the next week they have to do it. Like, bro, you just went through the rigors of an NFL season or an NBA season. Give your body a month. Give your body six weeks because guess what? If you go to training camp in July and you can't get your ass in shape from March, April, May, June,

28:53Shannon Sharpe:I just think they need to give this. I think they need to give their body a rest. And then once you hit it, you're able – because what I'm trying to do is I'm trying to have my body that where I get – when I get to camp, I'm good. I'm good. I ain't trying to peak no more. I ain't trying to do anything. I'm just trying to get to camp, and I'm going to hold it going to the season, knowing that the healthiest I'm ever going to be is the first day I showed up to camp.

29:17Chad Johnson:Hello. That's the healthiest I'm going to be, Joe.

29:19Shannon Sharpe:I'm never going to be that healthy again. man I feel great I don't give a damn how great you feel your body know yeah you go you hey look

29:28Chad Johnson:you always had those little knickknacks throughout the season you know what I mean that you may get up to you may get up one morning damn my knee biting today why am I knee biting damn my ankle why that ankle that right ankle sore today it's biting you know what I mean so every day it's kind of like having a sports car bro you got to look under the hood you got to check everything You got to make sure everything running right, because that's how it is. Because once you get out there, you get on the field or the court,

29:54Shannon Sharpe:you want that thing running smooth, man. Man, my ankles, I don't know about you, Ocho, but in camp, man. Yeah. My ankles beaming, man, I be walking. I was walking like I was 72 when I was 22, going to the bathroom, man. My ankles hurt, man. I'm training better than two a days, Ocho and Joe. Man, I'm like, damn. Sometimes I was like, man. It used to be a killer. I look at my clock, because I used to have an alarm clock on the bed. I was like, man, I'm going to wait three hours. I ain't getting up. I'm hurting too bad. You got to think that two days would pass too, huh? Yeah, for sure. Yeah, they don't know anything about that.

30:29Shannon Sharpe:They don't understand about those practices back then and the length of those practices because a lot of coaches were old school. You didn't get these young coaches like you get now. Not when I came along. Now you're getting guys 32, 33, 35. them coaches that I got, they came from the 60s. They either played in the 60s or they were on the staff of somebody that played in the 60s, the old school guard, the Coach Landry, the Lombardis, the Bud Grants. Man, they ain't no number one way. That was it.

31:03Chad Johnson:They getting butter from a duck. Hello. Hey, he ain't lying. Hey, man, we used to do two a days. Okay, Ocho, I'm talking about a hard two a days. See, these dudes, they barely practice now. Here's the problem. They barely practice. They come in, they get up some shots, and then they go home. And then they jump. Then when game time come and that popcorn start popping upstairs. Yeah. Then that popcorn start popping. You put that thing on the freeway. Now you trying to take it 200 when you ain't been going but 100. Yeah. That will happen. That will happen, Ocho. I'm telling you, man. I know that will be what will happen.

31:35Chad Johnson:Of course.

31:36Shannon Sharpe:Because in the winter, what you do? You go out there. Joe, when we growing up, we decide what you do. It was cold. You go create the car and come back in the house. You let it warm up. hello you ain't getting the car you're driving you let that thing warm up a little bit yeah yeah i'm gonna let it warm up about five minutes and then you get on out there hey you put your defrost on and everything to throw the uh uh unthought of yeah yeah hey yeah now you ready to go you ain't just go out there and just take off hey wait um hey um once that's i remember of them days once they got to December, which would you drove in December in Denver?

32:14Shannon Sharpe:I had an SUV. I had when I first got to Denver. I only want to tell y 'all what the first one of the first cars I had had a station wagon.

32:24Chad Johnson:And when you first got to deal with because I have nothing

32:27Shannon Sharpe:and the dude let me bar to do let me borrow the station wagon for about a month. But hey, I'll pull up. I'll pull up a bad no chicks. Try to holler at you, but I'll pull up. See, she's going to hold it on the road. Hey, how you doing, man? They ain't talking to nobody no wood pedal and station wagon. But then I got a four-door blazer and then in 96, I did a cover shoot for a magazine and the guy asked me what I wanted for payment. I just threw something out there. I said, man, I really want this 4.6 Range Rover. He said, go down to the dealership and pick it out.

33:01Chad Johnson:Damn.

33:02Shannon Sharpe:What? I just, hey, when it got cold, Joe, like November, like in the November, December, I had me a little Dodge Ram. Oh, you had a pickup truck? Yeah, I had a little pickup truck. Yeah, just because I ain't wanna get stuck. I'm not getting stuck. Oh no. Oh, that ain't happening.

33:21Chad Johnson:Oh no. Oh yeah, I had a, I was living in Utah. It was probably one of the worst. I lived in Park City too. Oh, it's snow.

33:30Shannon Sharpe:You ain't getting a bus with snow, Joe.

33:32Chad Johnson:I had that Jeep Wrangler with them big wheels on it, with them big tires on that joint going up and down that mountain yeah i would gucci i'm talking about snow was so tall snow was so tall you couldn't even you couldn't even see the mailbox no more damn you know what i mean so so here look look how you got out of the driveway hold on hold on what i didn't know ocho if you don't clear the mailbox here they don't deliver your mail so you you couldn't even see the mailbox so dude came through one day i'm like damn man why we ain't no mail he was like man you got to clear the mailbox i'm talking about you couldn't even see it yeah that was there was the days i was like man i'm glad i'd be like i live in an apartment

34:17Shannon Sharpe:complex and they came along and they were like the driveway but other that that was it yeah oh yeah that was it and uh so i don't i don't know i don't know what the giants are gonna do i don't know what the nfl i can't they can't protect the quarterbacks anymore they've hampered the defenses so much you've got mid guys and people think these mid guys are better than Marino are better than Elway better than Young and better than some of these guys but it's different just imagine if they would allow you to attack the quarterback today like they once did hello like back then man everybody be suspended I know everybody be suspended.

38:37Shannon Sharpe:The Browns were perfect at first home game in Cleveland this Sunday against the Panthers. quarterback Deshaun Watson said he doesn't want to be at war with the Browns fans. Let's take a listen to what Deshaun had to say.

38:50Chad Johnson:Yeah, I mean, I mean, the biggest thing, like I don't ever try to go at war with the fans. So I think the biggest thing is just, you know, ready for support, ready to feel their energy, ready to get this big dub for the city of Cleveland and, you know, continue this great feeling that we have this week. So that's my motto and just keep pushing forward,

39:08Shannon Sharpe:finding ways to win on Sunday to, you know, take advantage of the opposing team and get a dozen.

39:16I like it. Hey, listen, I'm happy for him. I'm happy for him based on how he played last week. I'm happy for him for all the struggles and problems and adversities he had to deal with, not only off the field, but on the field with the injuries. So I'm glad he played good last week. I'm glad he's one and one right now. And he had the chance to rectify everything with the fans this week with his performance. It's all going to come down to a performance. But one thing about it, he's going against a Carolina team that's hot and Bryce Young is playing really, really good football. Really good football.

39:48That young bull, Devin Lloyd over there with the Carolina Panthers. Man, boy, they got them one over there. Oh, they're the big D linebackers.

39:57Shannon Sharpe:I think his name is Derrick Brown. Yeah. And then, you know, you got JC on the back end. So they got, they got, they, they look, they played really well against the Falcons. We did see them in week one. Ocho give up 59. I don't know if Cleveland have the arsenal, the five power to go get 59. No, no, no. But, but they're like, can we go get 29? Can we get, can we get half of what, what, what, what, the Bears got? But the question is,

40:30Shannon Sharpe:looking at Carolina offensively, 37 in week one, 34 in week two. I was just going to say that.

40:38Chad Johnson:They 30 a game. My ex-man, Xavier Leggett, playing good. Petarola McMillan, playing good. Coker, playing good. They let my boy Jimmy Horn go. So Jimmy over there with Cleveland. With Cleveland now. So, you know, well, listen, this is what they're doing here. This is what they're going to do here. You know how that you know how they got him under the lights the thing is Ocho

41:06Shannon Sharpe:that he a little young so he's not if that was you or I in year five year six that might be a different ballgame because we be entrenched in the office know all the fine nuances know all the checks all the signals when they do this don't even worry about that I don't mean that Bryce young bulljime right but when he does this he actually means something because that was a lot of times because a lot of times we are when we played somebody that would play with us and they were abreast in the west coast we had to do some dummy stuff because everybody knew what smoke was and everybody knew what lying and looking slack sally slant and go you know everybody everybody know what that was

41:48Chad Johnson:well look i'm happy for the sean bro you know he gets another opportunity on the ocho you know to play the game that he loves uh obviously i know he wants to play well and perform well uh in front in front of that home crowd. And his swag, his swag seem a little different too. You know, he got a little more bounce in his step since he got that win. You can kind of tell, like, I don't know about y 'all, but I'm just reading body language, you know what I mean? Watch how he walk, Joe. Yeah, yeah, yeah, he look a lot more comfortable out there. Watch how he walk. You can tell when somebody comfortable and you know they playing well, look how they walk.

42:20Matter of fact, look how he dropped back with the ball. You know, body language will tell you everything, boy.

42:26Chad Johnson:It do.

42:27Shannon Sharpe:I think the thing is what Deshaun needs to understand. Look, he says, I don't want to be at war with the fans, but you can't break. Look, I found the best way to defuse the fans is to kill them with kindness. Yeah, you're upset because they cheered that you were injured. And I'm the first to admit, come on now. I don't think you cheer anybody that's injured. You damn sure can't cheer your own guy got injured. Hell no. But I'm glad that he's kind of made peace with the fans. And hopefully, I think a lot of this diffusion has to do with they won last week. It's kind of hard to boo a guy that you won.

43:05Shannon Sharpe:You won the previous week. Now, I'm going to give you a chance. Now, I ain't going to tell you that I'm not going to boo. Because you throw a pick, I'm going to boo your ass. You throw me the ball, I'm going to boo your ass. You make a bet. You overthrow the guy. He open for a touchdown, I'm going to boo you. I'm just letting you know. I just gave you some grace. I'm not going to boo you when you come out the tunnel. So what happened is now instead of having a defense come out because you didn't want to run the risk of getting to Sean boo. Hell, I might brother. Come out there. Let him hear the change.

43:33Shannon Sharpe:Let him hit a fan. She is made. Yeah. Hey, listen, I hope they call the offense. Yeah. I hope, I hope this game. I hope they call the offense. I hope the Sean is the last one to go. So he can get those tears because right now the last thing they remember is the Sean having one hell of a game in the last game. they played.

43:51Chad Johnson:That's all they remember. That's all they have to go off right now. That's all they have to go off right now, Ocho, but it's what have you done for me lately? When they play their first home game and they run out, Deshaun has the, not just Deshaun, but the Browns, they got to give them people something to cheer about. You know what I mean? Because listen, if you don't give them something to cheer about, then they mean you give them something to bull about. You know what I'm saying? So they want to come out and perform well as a unit and I know Deshaun he wants to play well you know again another one you know what I mean it don't have like I say it don't have to be 400 but be a comfortable quarterback back there to where you're moving the ball forward you can put points on the board because you're playing against Carolina we already know them boys hey they putting them numbers up

44:38Shannon Sharpe:I think the thing is Ocho they're going to have to match they're going to have to get to 28th because I think Carolina is going to put points on the board that's me personally I could be wrong but But they put 30, what, 39 on the board? 37 on the board at home. They went to Atlanta, put 34 on the board. So we know they can score. They can score. They got big play potential. They got a nice running game with Chuba Hubbard. And you mentioned the wide receivers, and Bryce Young has played. The last eight games of last year and the start of the season, Bryce Young has played as well as he's played at any point in time in his NFL career.

45:17Shannon Sharpe:That's all you can ask for a young player, is to get better. Yeah, we like to see the big jump, but sometimes it's just incrementally getting better until we get to that point where you see that big, gigantic leap. It's like, okay, yeah, he legit now. Yeah, they're going to have to break bread. He's looking to get that$55,$60 million. And I think that's what they're going to have to do. But we understand, Deshaun. I think the thing is that you're going to have to play well. you bought some time it's not forever but you hey Joe they give a couple of series the stall out a little more than that they coming with the boos are you saying in Cleveland yeah I think they give them a little grace I think you could have you know three and out maybe get one first down two first downs after that they're like hey Whoa, uh-uh, uh-uh.

46:19Chad Johnson:Especially if they get behind. If they get behind, it's probably gonna get ugly. I agree. But yeah, I ain't wishing that on a young man. I want him to keep playing well because I know he wants to continue playing the game of football. But boy, listen, you talk about pressure from week to week. If you Deshaun, I don't care what you say. I don't care what he tell the media or what the Browns media say. Man, listen, that man got a lot of pressure on him every week. Not every week.

46:45Shannon Sharpe:And not only the pressure that comes along with being a quarterback, he know. Yeah. He know. We don't have to address, but everybody knows. Yeah. Everybody knows. And it's, you know, pressure is a privilege. It's a great thing to have. That means you have expectations. You, what do you, I mean, when an individual have expectations, that's when all of a sudden you feel something. man when I was a rookie Ocho man I wasn't playing no offense man I had no man please get my little special get my little special team my punt punt return kick kick return I'm up out here I'm out of everybody's way just made sure punt you up run out there to my gunner spot I'm cool punt return you up now all of a sudden they put me on offense now people are expecting things hello on the offensive side of football, there's really only five players.

47:44Shannon Sharpe:You know, your wide receivers. So you got five players that can really do something. Hey, on kickoff a punt, Joe, I got, hey, guys, I got ten. I got nine other guys that they can make a tackle. Them offensive linemen ain't going to make no plays. So basically it's on us, the running backs and the wide receivers and the tight ends. So now my focus shift. Oh, man, I got eight. That's going to. Woo. Man, damn. Okay, let's get it. Let's get it. I'm all for that. I love having expectations placed on me. I think that's what we thrive on. Ocho, you know your grandmother, your mom, they was counting on you to get them out of that situation.

48:28Shannon Sharpe:Joe, you know your mom. Hey, you the only child. If you don't get us out of here, how are we getting up out of here, Joe? Ain't nobody coming around dropping off no lottery tickets that they won millions and millions of dollars, saying, here you go. So we've had expectations placed on us at a very young age. We put that expectation on ourselves because we said if we don't get us out of here,

48:57Shannon Sharpe:and you're not in this hard, like the further you go along, I mean, you ain't really trying to get, I mean, people ain't getting great, great, great, great grandma out of the situation. you might get mom out of there grandma. But boy, great grandma, great, great grandma, they left like damn. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Hey, I gotta get grand help out of this situation.

49:20Chad Johnson:Hello. By any means. Any means. Yeah, that's what I tell you, hey boy, hey, hey, hey, Ocho boy, when I figured it out and I knew I had a real opportunity, I did, hey, not only for myself, but hell, for mama and grandma. Yeah, for sure. Hey, boy, they done made some sacrifices for you, boy. You know what I mean? Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey. I want to be able to come home in the summer, man. My mama's sitting in there in the living room with her feet kicked up on the ottoman watching TV. You know what I mean? Yeah.

49:50Shannon Sharpe:Yo, yo, yo, yo, yo, you got, I got tired of that fan. You got three blades and one of them missing. You got to put a big old cement block on there to keep the fan from dancing. Right. Oh, nah. Yeah. Hey, that's so funny, Uncle Joe. You got to think. My grandma never really said why she was so hard on me. You know, I understand the sacrifices that she put in, but she got fed up. Well, when I got thrown out of the links, Uncle Joe, I came home and she looked at me, man, with tears in her eyes and she hit that. I've done all I can. I washed my hands. I was home for another 48 hours before I was on a flight to LA to my mama.

50:32damn see i can't do it no more i can't do it hey hey oh joe huh that hurt you don't it did see them tears in her eyes hey hey joe that hurt boy that hurt but you know as as a young and you know i'm young i'm wild joe i don't really listen yeah you know she's been telling me to put school first i'm trying to do it my way because i'm thinking my talent alone i ain't gonna have to i ain't gonna have to worry about no school yeah man it kept biting me it kept biting me in ass every time, Joe. Man, my back was against the wall. It took me three years to get out of a two-year institution. JUCO two years, Joe.

51:05Man, I was ineligible my second year, so it took me three years to get out of a two-year institution. I was like, my back was against the wall, Joe. It was either now or never. So I just like, you know what, let me try it her way. Man, I went to summer classes at West LA. I went to summer classes at Southwest. I was at Santa Monica. Man, I got that one-for-one man at Oregon State. But once I got on that big stage, Joe, that's all I needed. I just needed them people. I needed them NFL scouts just to see I could play ball.

51:37Shannon Sharpe:You just needed somebody to see you. That's it. And once they saw you, but here's the thing. More than that, you didn't want to see your grandma like you saw her the last time you saw her. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. It does something to you to see your grandma cry. Because you have to understand, my grandma was born in 1921. My grandma lived through the great, my grandma was in that time when things were hard. Yeah. My grandma was out there with the kids picking cotton. So you know what my grandmother had gone through. They having kids naturally. They having kids at home, ain't no damn medication. So you know them women tough.

52:20Shannon Sharpe:I'm talking about tougher than wet level. And to see something to hurt your grandma that bad, she don't really know what else to do. So I done cried, I done prayed about it. I done did all I can. I never forget them words, Joe. I done did all I can. I done prayed on it, but baby, I can't do it no more. Hey, the most hurtful thing is,

52:49Chad Johnson:it's the disappointment that you're hearing yes you know what i mean once you hear that disappointment you like oh my god and they they're crushing that'll crush you it's so funny hold on now uncle joe she done did all this sacrificing i finally make it we have draft day at my house at grandma house we have draft day i'm hype boy joe i get drafted second round and everybody you know my homeboys out the crib you know yeah dog boy you went to cincinnati boy you sure you They the worst team in the league. I said, boy, I don't care where I went. Boy, I'm going to go out here and show out. I'm going to be every bit of Liberty City, Dade County, and represent us very well.

53:30And I did just that. And I tell grandma, I say, baby, we finally made it. We can get up out of here. She like, get up out of here. Right. Boy, I ain't going up there. She said, you going to ride ahead. You don't want no new house? Hey, Joe, she ain't want no new house. She wouldn't let me do no upgrades. She wouldn't let me do nothing. Man Joe why every time football season end where you think I went and stayed at? Your grandma? Right at grandma house. Yeah I was there till like my fourth year in the league.

53:57Shannon Sharpe:You do realize that grandparents love their grandkids more than they love their own kids. Hello. All the mistakes they made with their own kids they get to correct with you. That's why it hurts them so bad because they pour so much more into you than they poured into their own kids yeah and knowing the sacrifices that they made for you when you hurt them it hurts you even more what is it's something about like when gram my grandma could tell me something that my mom couldn't tell me because i'm like yeah you my mom but hold on granny is your mom so she really know

54:41Chad Johnson:Right. Yeah.

54:43Shannon Sharpe:It's just something about it. Man, me and Spanky. Boy, it's just something. Like I said, I knew what every time, if I ever talk, because my grandfather passed, Granny didn't cry. No. Mm-mm. Mm-mm. Like I said, my grandma was tough. So I knew when I saw my grandmother cry, I knew it was something really, really, really, really going on. Like I said, I can only recall maybe twice in 43 years, because my grandmother passed in 2011, in 43 years to see my grandmother cry.

55:29I don't take death well at all.

55:32Shannon Sharpe:Hey, Joe, we had a show. Hey, Joe, we had a show. And Uncle was talking about, you know, the dog. he's had a lot of dogs.

55:41Chad Johnson:Yeah. Man, he would talk about a dog that he had to put down, Joe. Yeah. Man, I'm over here tearing up. Well, I'm talking about, you can see the tears. I'm trying to hide it from the chat, but I had to take my glasses off and wipe, man. I don't have no relationship with Unk Dog. Way back in the day, I don't take death well at all, man. Just the thought, and just the thought of hearing him talk about it, man, I'm boohooing. Yeah, it's tough. It's tough. Hey, hey, hey. Cause when you think about it, with Grandma Uncle Ocho, hey man, if you needed something done, she was gonna do it. Hey, hey, maybe I don't wanna worry at mama about signing this damn behavior document I done got in school.

56:22Chad Johnson:Cause she working two or three jobs, they gonna come with a slap across the head or something. Hey, I'm gonna go to grandma. Grandma, I need you to sign that behavior document. Hey, and she'll sign it. You know what I mean? So, ooh, boy, she saved you, boy, many days.

56:39Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, it's just something about them grandmothers, man. Ain't no sense to lie about that. It's something about them. I mean, we're all here for him. I mean, it's, what have you done all the work for, man? What have you done it for? What have you worked 22 months to come back to play and give yourself a chance to play at a high level? I mean, it's really cool, you know? I said, let it rip. What do you have to fear? Let it rip, man. I mean, you've already had a hell of a career already. Man, let's just go. Go down fighting. Go back. Go down swinging.

1:00:55Let's improve every week as a team and as a unit. And there's still going to be pitfalls. I mean, we're human. We're a young offense. And we're young being together. I'm using that term again, for God's sakes. So I'm going to get that back. But I'm just saying in general, like, let's just have a great week and let's put our best foot forward in them. Then we can turn the page the next week and see where we're at the next week. That's all we can do.

1:01:19Shannon Sharpe:We love using that term young, don't we? Yeah. Man, we're a young team. You know, he's ugly. That's that crutch. Yeah. Hey, you know why? Well, this is why they're not going well. They are young. Because it's a new system. I mean, the whole nine yards. And then also, when they boo, they're not booing the team, even though we all together, collectively. They're booing an individual that's not playing well. Coach knows that. He knows that as well. You know and the other players aren't gonna be affected by booing if it's just the Sean that they're born if he's not

1:01:58Chad Johnson:Oh, no, you don't think they boo in the organization, too I don't think it's just the Sean getting booed. Okay, oh, I'm gonna just be real with y 'all I think the fans all love, you know, they they probably Subsided a little bit as far as like with the boy or what whatever the boo Hayes and they gonna give the Sean But I think it's to the franchise to man. I don't think it's just toward the Sean. Hey Joe them boys go out there and three and out and three and out intercept them. Them boomers, they coming. What? In Cleveland? Yeah. Man, please. It's crazy. It's crazy because, you know, they haven't seen great quarterback play in so long.

1:02:40Chad Johnson:And it's like, man, you got to be a diehard faithful fan, Ocho, to keep showing up like this, man, year after year, game after game.

1:02:48Shannon Sharpe:That's why I say the Cleveland got the most loyal fans because they go into the season. No, they ain't got no chance of going to the Super Bowl. Everybody else think they got out. Everybody else has this blind optimism. The fan base, oh, we going. Ask the Broncos, the Chargers before they start. I mean, most teams, they're like maybe three or four teams. Yeah, if not, we ain't going. But they fans, oh, yeah, we going to Super Bowl. Cleveland Cleveland know they're not going to the Super Bowl they know they don't have the pieces in place to get there but them I done played Cleveland enough we played them twice a year went to Cleveland twice when I played with Baltimore and we used to go to Cleveland a lot when I played in Denver because they had the AFC we played a lot man them Jokers be out there tailgating I'm like y 'all just must come y 'all just like tailgating because you know damn well y 'all not about to win today Y 'all just want to come get drunk, throw the football, play whatever y 'all play, games y 'all play, and meet up with y 'all friends.

1:03:53Shannon Sharpe:You know damn well y 'all not about to win this game today. And guess what? 70 plus thousand show up every damn Sunday when they know damn well they not going to win. I tip my hat off to Cleveland fans. I don't know how y 'all do. Me, I couldn't be no fan like that, don't you? You lose a couple years, I'm going to get me another 10. I ain't finna hold you. Man, you ain't finna get me. First of all, I ain't that type of fan, Ocho, that I'm going to brave no elements. I'm not going to no damn cold. I don't give a damn who playing, unless it's my brother. I ain't going out there that damn cold. Yeah.

1:04:31Chad Johnson:I didn't mean you ain't no dad. I sure ain't.

1:04:34Shannon Sharpe:I ain't finna hold you. You right, Joe. I'm not. Hey.

1:04:44Shannon Sharpe:nope all right like i like my team i'm not going to sit no cold i'm not going to sit in the rain hey i'm a fan i'm 85 degree fan that's the time to be bet oh yeah them folks like ocho you think i'm gonna go sit in green bay chicago hell no what oh hold on you got to think about this now use your visual use your Use your visuals real quick, Uncle Joe. Think about this. Hey, Chad, think about this. It's November, December. Matter of fact, late December. The Bears have a game, a home game, or the Packers have a home game. You got your little piece, huh?

1:05:22Chad Johnson:Yeah. Y 'all get layered up. Put on your Montclair coat. Yeah, yeah. Put on your snow boots. You hear me? Right? Your long johns. Yeah. Your little mittens with the little battery to heat them up. Yeah. Your little batteries with your socks. Get you a nice heated blanket. With her at the game. Bundle it up with the covers. With the hot cocoa. Oh, there we go. That's romantic. That's a moment. I like that. I'm going to be a bunch of covers in the house.

1:05:57Shannon Sharpe:And when she get a little too close, we're going to get real romantic. I'm going to push pause on this game. Come on, kill me up. I got to have you.

1:06:09Shannon Sharpe:Man, I don't be fooling with that cold, man. I learned my lesson.

1:06:13Chad Johnson:But I ain't built like that. You can't just sit there and cuddle and have a good night, watch a movie, watch a game. I did that thing one time.

1:06:23Shannon Sharpe:I went to my brother. This was in 89. Yeah. I went to see that play in Minnesota. Let me tell you how cold it was. It was so cold, beer was freezing in cups. Now, you know how cold it got to be to get alcohol to freeze.

1:06:37Chad Johnson:He's fucking. Yeah, yeah.

1:06:39Shannon Sharpe:So what you think it's gonna do to my black ass? That ain't never been in that before. You gotta lay up. I lay up in the damn bed sick for a week. I said never no more. Unless I'm playing, I can't do it. I tip my hat fast, I tip my hat. If you in Buffalo, if you in anywhere where it gets cold, I'm talking about 10, 15 below. And you still go out there and you cheer and you support your team? If I had a hat, I'd tip it to you. Because old Shea, if Sterling Sharp ain't playing, if Kiara Sharp wasn't playing, I ain't going out there in a damn cold. You got your damn mind. Hey, what about the man in Denver, unk?

1:07:24The man in Denver, when it's cold, be out there with the barrel. Oh, barrel man. Yeah. Hey, come on now.

1:07:31Shannon Sharpe:Oh, I tilt my hat to him. I'm saying me.

1:07:39Shannon Sharpe:My brother playing, my kids playing. You're born there. Yeah. I'll bite that bullet for three hours. Other than that, I'm clicking at home. Yeah. Oh, no. Man, that code just does something. I don't know what it is, Joe, but that code does something to you. And once you start, once you get the chills and you start shaking, it's good. It's a wrap. Go ahead. You call sharp.

1:08:21Chad Johnson:Hey, I couldn't even imagine chasing somebody, trying to hit them, you know, trying to make a contact play in football and that type of weather, bro. I don't even know how y 'all do it. And then you see guys out there with no shirts on. They just running. They soft up. Not me, though. They soft up when they out there like that? Oh, you talking about people in the stands? No, I'm talking about players who be out there with no shirts on for the game.

1:08:46Shannon Sharpe:I don't know what they do. Oh, you talking about no shirts? Hey, Joe, I say I'm competing against everybody. I'm competing against the guy on the defense and this damn weather. F y 'all. Hey, Uncle, you wore sleeves? I didn't wear no sleeves. but I wore sleeves in practice and you know I had on sweats like the offensive lineman they go out there with shorts no matter how cold it is the lineman Joe out there with shorts on so it might be we might be practicing in 10 15 degrees and the lineman out there for two hours with just shorts on damn oh no hell yeah I couldn't I couldn't wear no sleeves hey Joe when it get cold I couldn't wear no sleeves because I can't I can't feel the ball and they be holding yeah you know I put that Vaseline on you put Vaseline on outside never on the inside just outside outside what the Vaseline do keep the heat most keep it in keep that layer yeah man you ain't never put no Vaseline on your face your grandma say come here boy put that Vaseline on the face keep the hawk up lay up real good yeah I remember them days yeah yeah yeah hey I'm glad it's over though oh yeah What you talking about, Ojo?

1:10:00Just playing in the cold, having to put that Vaseline on, get hit, trying to catch the ball in the cold, your hands numb. I got my heat packs inside the palm of my hand, Joe. Yeah. And, ah.
