In short

Nightcap Hour 1 discusses LeBron James teaming with Jalen Brown, Joel Embiid, and Tyrese Maxey in Philadelphia; whether LeBron is “ring chasing”; and Jalen Rose’s criticism that NBA coverage has weakened and is driven by non-players and LeBron “stans.”

Guests (on the episode)

No guest appears as a separate interviewee in the provided transcript. The hosts are Chad Ochocinco Johnson and “ISO Joe” (Joe Johnson). Jalen Brown is quoted from a stream, and Jalen Rose’s comments are referenced.

Guest backgrounds (referenced)

Jalen Brown is an NBA All-Star wing known for learning and leadership; LeBron James is a longtime elite star; Joel Embiid is a former MVP; Tyrese Maxey is an All-Star guard; Jalen Rose is a former NBA player/analyst.

Key claims

Brown says he’s excited to learn from LeBron “on and off the court.” Hosts argue LeBron’s move to Philly makes sense because he won’t have to carry the load and because Philly’s roster can fit around him. They reject “ring chasing” as inconsistent with prior criticism. They also defend former players commenting on games, saying casual fans need entertainment and simple explanations.

Notable examples

Knicks’ clutch reliance on Jalen Brunson; Tampa Bay/Buccaneers and Peyton Manning’s “missing piece” analogy; LeBron’s past team success (Miami, Cleveland, Lakers) and Philly’s long title drought.

9:53Shannon Sharpe:Same great quality, same great taste, same smoothness. Please, please drink responsibly and stay safe. Ocho and Joe, there's a big news drop while we were off. LeBron is going to the city of brotherly love. He's teaming up with Jalen Brown, Joel Embiid, and Tyrese Maxey. Let's listen to JB. He was on the stream, I think, tonight, talking about teaming up with LeBron. Let's take a listen to what he had to say. Super excited for this upcoming season. Yo, we got Bron. And, like, what an opportunity that is. Like, obviously, everybody's going to say whatever they want to say, and there's going to be a bunch of media this whole entire season.

10:34But, like, for me, like, what an opportunity it is to learn. One of my favorite things to do is to learn, despite what people may say, despite what people may feel about. My favorite thing to do is to learn. I love learning. So, like, to have the opportunity to learn, one, from one of the, if not the greatest player of all time, you know, I get an opportunity to, like, on the court, off the court, learn and gather experiences that can accumulate to my own knowledge base.

11:02Shannon Sharpe:Oh, Joe, for the longest time you've been telling the chat and Joe and I that he's going to Miami. Are you surprised that the pivot, because a lot of people said, okay, Miami, it could be Cleveland going home for the final chapter. Dorothy said in the Withered Boss, there's no place like home. There's no place like home. A lot of people now say, well, I don't really think, and you hear Draymond say, I don't think Golden State was an option because of Steph and the heated rivalry between the two. but he pivots and he goes to Philly. Yes. What are your thoughts not going to Miami, and then are you surprised that he ended up in Philly, and what do we expect from them this year?

11:40Joe Johnson:Well, obviously I'm not surprised at all. Obviously me being a Florida native, a Miami native, a supporter of the Miami Heat, I always wanted what was best for that team, LeBron being free. I've kind of guessed right for the most part when it came to free agency with certain players, with Giannis coming here. Honestly, I thought LeBron was coming as well. I think one of the things that did hurt us is us not having shooters, not having anyone on the perimeter that can really shoot the ball. I think it's a good decision on LeBron's part, especially at 41, 42 years old and his 23rd, 24th year in the league, in the NBA in general.

12:16Joe Johnson:This is a chance, an opportunity to go to a team where the supporting cast is extremely stellar. We don't have to do that much. I think this is a team where he doesn't have to carry the load. He has Maxie. He had Jalen Brown. He has Eskimo. He has Embiid. So that is like, to me, excuse my reference in analogy and using in football sense with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They needed one piece to get over the hump. Coming off one season with Joe, when they had Jameis Winston, it was his 30-30 year, 30 touchdowns. What a phenomenal team, but he had 30 interceptions. I think that missing piece to the Philadelphia Sixers, trusting the process piece that can get them to their end goal, is adding LeBron to that team, and this might be the year they do it and come out the East.

13:02Joe Johnson:What you think, Joe?

13:04Chad Johnson:Man, listen, I've been telling y 'all this. Since we first heard the rumors, when Ocho was like, oh, no, you... And honestly, and honestly, the Sixers team wasn't the team that I thought he was going to, but hey, man, make it make sense for me. When I hear JB come out and speak the way he speaks, saying that he's looking to learn, he kept saying the word learn. I mean, it says a lot. You know, JB's character has been somewhat assassinated. Assassinated. Has been assassinated because of analytics saying that he's not a great player, bro. And I think he fuels it. He's going to fuel from that. And he's going to use this season, bro, to help the Sixers try and win a title.

13:46Chad Johnson:I think LeBron kind of understood that. Having Maxie, having Edge come, having JB, having MB. Damn, man, I could just come out and orchestrate this thing, Ocho. I ain't got to do a whole hell of a lot. You know what I mean? So it makes a lot of sense to me because we always talk about in the NBA, in order to win, when you look at teams like the Knicks, hell, they beat you in a multitude of ways with a multitude of people. This is what LeBron is looking for. He's looking to go to Philly and like, look, man, I ain't got to be historically great every damn night for us to win a game. I got this Maserati over here.

14:19Chad Johnson:I got this Lambo over here. Hey, man, we're going to pull all these things out and have a party. You feel me? So I like it. And when those guys buy in to whatever it is LeBron selling, bro, sky's the limit for the Sixers, man. I like it.

14:34Shannon Sharpe:I do too. I'm happy for him. I'm surprised. You said something very interesting, Joe, about the way the Knicks ended up winning the title because OG, it was OG one night. It was Cat one night. It was Josh Hart one night. It was always a different guy. Now, the guy they could constantly count on was Jalen Brunson. Yes, sir. Because when it got clutch time, when they were down all those points and somebody else might have helped them get reattached, but that's when Levin took the – I think he's number 11. I think he ended up taking the ball game over. And so now you got to – we know what Joel Embiid is.

15:08Shannon Sharpe:He's a former MVP. We know what JB – JB with 28 points, with an all-NBA selection. Tyrese Maxey, back-to-back, if I'm not mistaken, back-to-back years, an all-star. Edgecombe is an up-and-coming player. They have the pieces. Now, fitting around him, KCP, I think he got a buyout. They're going to have to be able to knock down three. Ocho, you mentioned Tom Brady. And people are like, well, why would he go to Tampa? They had two Pro Bowl receivers. They had an outstanding defense. Outstanding, young, homie, hungry, vicious. The same reason Peyton went to the Denver Broncos. Do y 'all remember what they had up there?

15:48Shannon Sharpe:Yes. Hello. They had Demarius Thomas, rest his soul. Eric Decker, Julius Thomas, no Sean Marino. They had a Vaughn Miller. They had Chris Harris Jr. They had Bradley Robey. Now, they got to add some other pieces. They go next year, they'll go get a DeMarcus Ware. They go get a Akeem to leave. And you see what happens. MVP for Peyton Manning. They get to the Super Bowl. They get thrashed in Super Bowl 48 against the Seahawks. But they come back in 50 and they win it all. So, I'm happy for him. This seems, look, he's like But I don't get – this is what I don't get, guys. I need y 'all to help me because I happen to be on Fox when LeBron went to L.A.

16:31Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. Damn near to a man. He didn't go to L.A. to catch Michael Jordan. He went to be Michael B. Jordan. He went to retire. He's in la-la land. No way you thought this man could win a championship with the pieces that they had in L.A. They killed him. Chad, you know I'm telling the truth. Yeah, facts. That's what everybody said. He didn't go to catch Michael Jordan. He went to catch Michael B. Jordan. Now he goes to a team that have pieces that have really good players. Oh, he ring chasing.

17:02Chad Johnson:Yeah.

17:03Shannon Sharpe:I need y 'all to make it make sense. I need y 'all to pick a side. And whatever side you decide to stay on, I'm cool with it. But the very people that said he wasn't trying to win. So what is he supposed to do? Now, you said if LeBron was serious about winning, he would take less money. Well, how much more less money is$4 million? You want him to play for free? I don't think the NBA will let him play for free. But$4 million compared to what he was making. Now, it's reported that the Clippers offered him a one-year deal,$20 million. He's like, no, I don't want that. Maybe they could have cleared out$15 million for the Warriors.

Read the full transcript

17:38Shannon Sharpe:Maybe they could have got a little mid-level exception for the Miami Heat. I don't know. But all I know is he says he believes that he can be a piece toward winning a championship. All the people that said the very reason that he went to L.A. wasn't to win, you criticize him now that he goes back to Philly with a chance to win. You know, nobody thought Philly was stacked until he joined them. You know what I mean? You ever noticed that? Hey, now he – hey, I'm like, well, damn. Damn. It's like, I was always, well Shannon you can't play. Why can't I play? Because you make the team uneven. Well damn.

18:19Shannon Sharpe:How I make the team uneven? I'm teeing just like you. Right. LeBron makes the team uneasy. A 42 year old? Really? A 42 year old Joe? I thought he wasn't any good.

18:31Chad Johnson:Nah, nah. Come on. Y 'all see how that man take care of himself, how he in the gym every damn morning. Come on man. That man, he playing for something too. He playing for his legacy. He know going to Philly, hell, they ain't won it. How long? How long has it been? 43 years. 1983. They swept the Lakers. 43 years. So, you know, Bron got there and be like, man, look, I take this franchise. Ocho, I take this franchise, the Sixers to the top. We get to the mountaintop and win? Come on, man. I ain't got to catch MJ. You know what I'm saying? But I've done something that no other guy in the history.

19:05Shannon Sharpe:He would have won a championship with, Joe. Huh? This would be the fourth team. if he were to win a championship, it would be the 14th. Miami, Cleveland, Lakers, now the Sixers. Now, Cleveland had never won a championship. He helped get them one. The last time the Heat had won a championship, about seven years. The last time the Lakers had won a championship, it was what? 10. So 10 years. And now we're talking about 43 years. But if you remember, the year before in 82, they had lost to the Lakers. They come back, they get Mo. and Mo said fo fo fo. I be damned. Fo fo fo he got him up out of me.

19:42You bought a sofa you didn't have to assemble. A suit someone measured just for you. And now you're taking a guy's trip that actually matters. You've upgraded a few things in life. The two best teams go head-to-head as Coach Nancy Lieberman and Greg Monroe's Dallas Power take on the one-seed Chicago Triplets, led by Coach Dr.

22:56J and Captain Montrez Harrell. Then coach Gary Payton and the Boston Ball Hogs battle the Sear Corps and the Detroit Amps in a must-win game for Boston. The game played the way you love. Watch live Sunday, August 9th on CBS at 1 p.m. Eastern, 10 a.m. Pacific. And catch replays Monday on BET. Presented by iHeart. Yeah.

23:14Joe Johnson:And you know the funny thing too, Joe, you mentioned his legacy. I think LeBron actually going to Philly. And let's just say he doesn't happen to win a championship. And things don't go the way we think they may go. As far as his legacy is concerned, it's cemented at this point. Duncan Joe, you see me now, I don't think he can do no wrong. There's nothing that can tarnish his legacy. He can add to it. Oh, Joe minute in history. He can add to it, but he can't do anything to actually harm it. Obviously, I want him. I want him to come here in Miami. Understand the pieces that are missing and for him to have a chance to.

23:44Joe Johnson:I mean, no, listen.

23:49Joe Johnson:I understand the pieces that are missing here in Miami. You know, thinking about it being too much, too much on him. not having the extras needed to be able to do what he needed to do down here in Miami. I'm happy for him. I'm not happy for him, but I'm happy for him.

24:06Shannon Sharpe:But help me understand, Joe, and you played the game. Why is it that him going to Philly and not winning a championship would harm his legacy, but Michael Jordan going to Washington did nothing to harm him? Oh, he was just going to have fun. He just wanted to play. You see? So let me ask you a question. Had he won a championship, would he have turned it down? What would you have said? Michael Jordan goes to Washington, wins seven. He's 7-0.

24:33Chad Johnson:Yeah.

24:34Shannon Sharpe:That's what would have been said.

24:36Chad Johnson:Yeah. I'm not making this up.

24:38Shannon Sharpe:See, there's benefit. And, Ocho, we had this discussion when we first started the show. And I said, Ocho, at some point in time, you realize the only thing left to do is to get old. Yeah. Being 58 years of age and really understanding the game of basketball and seeing the transformation of it, I'm old enough to remember. Yeah. I'm old enough to remember. And we're going to address the topic in a second about LeBron and Jalen Rose, what he had to say. But I just don't, I just need people to help me understand. What is it about this man that rubs you so wrong, that upsets so many, we've never seen it.

25:18Shannon Sharpe:We've never seen a more polarizing figure. And once upon a time, I thought it was Tim Tebow. but this is Tim T wrote Tim Tebow on steroids growth hormone insulin deck of the office in sustenance to fit all that well listen the question you

25:34Joe Johnson:just asked is the reason why they don't like him the question you just asked why don't they because we've never seen it before Joe because the expectations that he had on his shoulders come out of the high school many people thought he wouldn't be able to maintain it let alone exceed him the way he has he superseded everything not only his own personal goals hell everyone else's everyone else's expectations on the outside looking in he've exceeded theirs as well so the only thing left to do is for those they got to find something wrong with it they got to and every time they throw something at him he come back with something else and he's still going at this age still playing quality basketball at his age.

26:16Joe Johnson:Still one of the best in the game at his age. Of course, people aren't going to like that. And the funny thing about it is most of the hate and some of the hate is coming from those that played on the same type of hardwood he did.

26:28Chad Johnson:Yeah, it's tough. You know, I think he's going to supersede the expectations, man. I think Brown understands and knows, Ocho, that man, this is coming with the territory, bro. You know what I'm saying? Like, this is just another stepping stone in the right direction and trying to make it a part of history going going to philly is definitely a risk but i think it's the risk that he's willing to take knowing and understanding yeah that man at that point guard spot ocho you got to have a guard bro who gonna be able to get money that's that's the most value position in basketball right now just like football is a quarterback if you ain't got no good quarterback hell it's gonna be hard to win just like in basketball.

27:08Chad Johnson:Man, if your point guard can't get money, control both ends of the floor at some point, man, it's going to be hard to win in this league nowadays.

27:17Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. Joe, you said something I heard you while I was off camera. You said he understands that comes with the territory. Tell me in the history of the sport, a man that's faced this level of viscerol when he's been this good has nothing off the field. As far as we – he hasn't been in the blotter. He hasn't got a DUI. He's been exemplary, as far as we know, off the field, off the court. Married to his high school, been together since the eighth grade, raising three beautiful kids. I just need somebody to tell me. I just need somebody in the chat. Tell me what it is. Tell me the man that wasn't caught.

27:58Shannon Sharpe:He just played. Tell me what is it about him that elicits such a reaction, be it good or bad, with this man?

28:12Chad Johnson:Man, listen.

28:13Joe Johnson:I can't think of that. It's the admiration.

28:17Chad Johnson:It's the longevity. People tired of the glazing, bro. They tired of the glazing of LeBron. That's what they call it. They tired of it. You know what I mean? and when you've been great for so long at some point man they're gonna start throwing sticks

28:31Shannon Sharpe:let me ask you a question tell me the time that do you remember do you understand people been glazing michael jordan sister shoe came out yeah 84. yeah we're talking about 42 years yes sir we're talking about 42 years yeah but you gotta understand jordan has been a standard with

28:50Joe Johnson:no comparison with no comparison there was nothing to compare to it therefore glazing and appreciating what Michael has done over the years, not only on the court, but off the court. Culturally, what he's done for us culturally, in general. So it's kind of different. Now someone has come along that is comparable to that of Michael Jordan and what he's done on the court. Now you have issues. Now you're splitting the committee up of those who enjoy the game of basketball. So they're going to nitpick every, in which way they can when it comes to those two.

29:21Shannon Sharpe:But LeBron's game is so, you know what, Joe? Completely different. If he, they didn't get mad at Kobe, who basically copied, he's a facsimile of Jordan.

29:31Chad Johnson:Yeah.

29:32Shannon Sharpe:If LeBron had did that, I was like, bro, come on now. If he had did what I did to my brother, everything that my brother did, I did. He had done, I said, come on now, LeBron, damn. His game, the only thing that he got, well, two things. He got the number and he got the powder toss. But Jordan didn't throw the powder toss. I think he just patted in his hand like this. Now, he might have – I mean, people didn't put it on it like they do now. If you got a celebration, they got 15 – these guys got 15 handshakes. They got a handshake with every guy. They got a handshake with the camera lady. They got a handshake with – I'm like, well, damn, how y 'all remember all this?

30:11Chad Johnson:Hey, that's Bruh. Hey, Bruh started all that. He started all that. He dabbed up the dude, the security dude at the damn front door before he come in.

30:20Shannon Sharpe:The dude at the desk. He dapping him up. Hey, we had one thing, Denver. Mile high salute. Okay, get it going, cuz. That's all we got for you. But I just think the thing is, I believe that we can appreciate. Because you like Michael Jordan, that doesn't mean you have to hate Kobe or LeBron or any of the others. Because you like LeBron, that doesn't mean you have to dislike. And it took me a while to get that. Because I get this a lot when people say, and Joe, we was having a conversation. We had a conversation when I called you the other day in a couple of days and tell you how great a job you were doing.

31:00Shannon Sharpe:I said, Joe, I had to get out of this, Ocho. When somebody gave their opinion, they asked, okay, that's his list, that's his list. When people ask me, what's your favorite food? I'm like, chicken breast. Chicken breast? Damn, you don't like no ribs? You don't like no? Bro, I ain't killed nobody. I said, that's mine. So you can have, but just because I like chicken breast, that doesn't mean I got to poop on oxtails or ribs or lobster or shrimp. I can't eat shellfish. I'm allergic. But that's all I'm saying. We've never seen in the history of the game, and I go back, the first championship I can remember was the 76ers playing the Portland Trailblazers.

31:49Shannon Sharpe:Philly got out to a 2-0 lead. The Portland Trailblazers, Big Bill Rolton, Big Red, Dr. Jack Ramsey was the head coach. They had Lionel Hollis, a few other guys. But those were the two main guys. So I go back that far. That's 50 years. That's 50. So I remember that. I've never seen it. And all the years, I remember when NBA was on CBS. Bill Russell was calling games. How many of y 'all remember that? You remember Bill Russell's calling game, Joe?

32:23Chad Johnson:Nah, I don't. I ain't going to be a lot of tea.

32:24Shannon Sharpe:Casey Joe, yeah, yeah, yeah, they call games. Yeah, all them, yeah.

32:27Chad Johnson:I ain't know that.

32:28Shannon Sharpe:Then it went to NBC. Marv Apple was play-by-play. Bill Costas. Peter Vesey was on the sideline. Omar Rashad. Not one person. One person. Nobody has had a relationship with a player like Omar Rashad had with Michael Jordan. Hello. Michael Jordan, yeah. Not one person ever said he glazed. Not one person ever said he was on the payroll. Not one person. Now, if you like a player, you're on the payroll.

32:59Chad Johnson:Tell me what they said to that, chat. Hey, and it's because how we ingest the information and how we see everything in today, the media is different. It wasn't that much damn, you can only see that on the Amara Rashad show, you know what I mean? On the Sunday game of the week. You know what I mean? Now, we in just so much, bro. And I feel like media is at an all-time high with a lot of former athletes giving back. That's a good thing, Joe.

33:30Shannon Sharpe:No, it is. I know it. That's what I'm saying. Because there are so many more outlets, Joe, there are so many more opportunities for you to get revenue. Back then, there was only one place. There you go. That was it? There you go.

33:43Chad Johnson:So you got so many people. it's a lot of people with different opinions.

33:51And that is your opinion.

33:53Shannon Sharpe:But let me ask you a question. When did this, so what were Michael Jordan fans called? Were they called fans or were they called stands? What was Kobe fans called? Were they called fans or were they called stands? What was Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Hakeem Olajuwon, Charles Barkley, Dr. J? what were their fans called? Were they called fans or were they called stands? Joe, I throw it to you first.

34:19Chad Johnson:What were they called?

34:20Shannon Sharpe:Fans or stands? Yes.

34:23Chad Johnson:Yeah. They were called fans. Yeah.

34:27Joe Johnson:I got it. I got it. I got it. I got it.

34:30Shannon Sharpe:What did they call LeBron fans?

34:33Joe Johnson:Okay. I mean, obviously stands right now. You got to understand culturally the lingo has changed since then. So back then, Larry Bird, Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, they had fans now you know we've ushered in a new generation that has changed the way we talk they changed the dialogue i know what it was called back then they weren't saying nobody oh you

34:53Chad Johnson:jocking that man get out that man job yeah yeah that go back way back so okay i'm glad you said

34:58Shannon Sharpe:that because you said the lingo change yeah so back then it was called jock yes so who said you jocking jordan who said you jocking kobe who said you jocking magic or larry i'm glad you did that You see, hey Joe, you see how I open the door? See that's what you gotta do. Sometimes you gotta open the door cause Ocho don't wanna open the door. So I gotta kinda nudge it.

35:20Chad Johnson:Yeah, yeah. I gotta try to nudge it.

35:23Shannon Sharpe:I'm glad you said that. Yeah. That's all I'm saying. You can look, bruh, y 'all see all them damn Jordan shoes I got?

35:33Chad Johnson:Yeah.

35:34Shannon Sharpe:Y 'all see all them Kobe shoes I got? I love them all. I do believe I do believe I can appreciate LeBron I can appreciate Kobe I can appreciate Jordan I believe that now you got who you believe is the GOAT that's an argument that's never going to be decided they never got an opportunity to play each other Jordan says it's not fair for him to say him to GOAT because I didn't play against you know some of the Bill Russells I didn't play against the Wilt Chambers I didn't play against some of those guys And some of the guys that's going to come along didn't play against me. And some of the guys didn't play against LeBron and so forth and so on.

36:14Shannon Sharpe:So I get it. I get what he's saying. It's hard to transfer errors because things are different. Technology is different. Ocho is different now. Guys are able to train. And all these, you see that$175 million facility? The Broncos just built Ocho. Ooh. I see it. $175. They got an Olympic-sized cold plunge. They got the locker room, Ocho, 102 seats. You can only have 53 guys on the roster with another 15. So at most, you can have a 70. They got an extra 30 seats up in there. Oh, yeah. Absolutely. They got a full bar that just walked out. I'm like, oh, my God. I said, man, I would have never left there.

37:00Shannon Sharpe:Ocho, I would have been like you. Ocho, I would have been standing in the facility. I ain't got nothing. I ain't paying no$1 ,400,$1 ,500 a month for no rent. I'm staying my black ass right here.

37:08Joe Johnson:Listen, one thing, not to go off topic, when we talk about upgrades and what teams have done to improve their facilities, I had opportunity, obviously, while I was off, being that I had to work, I had to work in Carolina, I had an opportunity to go to the Panthers practice. I was able to see the Panther facility. Man, Mr. Tepper, man, what he did in putting that facility for those players, you know, for the amenities that they have. Hey, Joe, I ain't never seen nothing like that, Joe. I thought the bangles was stated on. No, you didn't. Which it is. No, no, hey, listen to me. No, hey, all jokes aside, I'm not talking about the old bangles.

37:45Joe Johnson:I'm talking about the new bangles and what they did. It's crazy. So then I go to the Panthers, they got the same stuff the bangles got. They've added all this stuff that I think for us, I mean, it would have been great to have at the time, but in a sense, I don't think we needed all that the red light therapy, the saunas, the therapists. You don't think we need all that? Hey, Joe, listen, they got the mini nutrition bars, and the shakes, and the vanillas, and the fruit, and then I go to Chicago. Joe, two days ago, I was in Chicago. I went to Chicago to practice. Man, who's the owner of the Bears?

38:19Shannon Sharpe:Miss Halas, the Halas' founder of the Bears. He passed it to his daughter, Virginia McCaskey. She passed away. It's her son, but it's still in the family. So the McCaskies. I tell you what, hey, the McCaskies,

38:33Joe Johnson:boy they did one hell of a job over there too, uncle. You hear me? With the facilities, with the amenities, the practice field. I thought it's ridiculous at this point. I understand it is the NFL, right? But based on what I used to see - Oh yeah, it's different now, Ocho. When I was playing in the upgrades that they have now, think about your high school, uncle. When the last time you've been to your high school, what's your high school look like now?

38:52Shannon Sharpe:They merged the two. Oh, damn.

38:55Joe Johnson:But Joe, think about your high school, Joe. Does it look the same way it did when you were there?

38:58Chad Johnson:It's historic, Ocho. It's HBO special on Little Rock Central. Look it up. But you can keep going, though. Keep going.

39:04Joe Johnson:So they didn't make no improvements or nothing?

39:06Chad Johnson:They added some stuff. Like, they added this big field house. OK, OK, OK. I get where you're going, though. I get where you're going. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Hey, hey.

39:13Joe Johnson:Boy, hey, I'm somebody look good.

39:14Shannon Sharpe:Hey, it look good. I went back to my high school. I said, damn, these seats small. I fit my.. I forgot. I done got bigger. I went back to my college. I'm like, how did I sleep my big ass on this twin bed? I was like, well, damn. Yeah. Yeah. But, yeah, the thing is different now. In Carolina, I only played in Carolina. I played preseason games, Ocho and Joe. I never played a regular season. Yeah. That feel, man, that grass is packed. It's great. I don't know if they still got natural grass, Ocho, but that grass was about, you talk about speed track, Ocho? You talk about a speed track?

39:51Chad Johnson:Yeah. Yeah. Man, listen. When I had Teague on here a past few days ago, you know he talked about, he referred to Atlanta Hawks practice facility, the country club. Man, listen. Oh, it's nice. Oh my God.

40:05Shannon Sharpe:Over there by Emory. Oh. It's like that, Joe? Yeah, it's nice. It absolutely is nice.

40:12Chad Johnson:Hey, hey, hey, hey. I got me a little key card to go in there and get me some work in too here. You know what I mean? Hey, Joe, they still give you access like that, huh? Yeah, I still give some access, Ocho. You know, you see, Uncle Nocho, when I was playing, that was my thing. If I couldn't sleep at night, bro, I'd go to the gym at two in the morning. You know what I mean? Get some shots up, use your key card.

40:34Shannon Sharpe:Like, you know, just be like that sometimes. That's different to me. If I couldn't sleep at night, I'd get a mean one. Go right to sleep. Oh, man, come on, man. Come on, come on. That's a sleeping pill for me. That's Ambien. Hey, how it up? Nah, nah, nah. Hey, all I had to do was free Willy. Willy with all up, I'm free Willy. That's it, that's it.

40:58Joe Johnson:Hey, listen, hey, hey, hey, hey, I'm with you when you're right now. I don't know what Joe on, y 'all. Yeah, yeah.

41:03Shannon Sharpe:Joe's talking about he can't sleep. He gonna go get some shots up. I'm gonna get a shot in. I don't know about up, I'm gonna get it in, though.

41:10Joe Johnson:He shoots, he scores! You know what, see, you know what's funny too? And you think about the difference in sports, Uncle Joe, see, if we can't sleep at night, there's really nothing we can do at two in the morning. We can't go to the facility. See, with basketball, it's a little easier, Joe. You can get up and go get some shots in. You know, you inside the gym.

41:29Chad Johnson:No, I -

41:29Shannon Sharpe:Football-wise, it's a little different.

41:31Chad Johnson:But it ain't even just getting shots here. You might just want to go in there and sit in a hot tub, sit in a jacuzzi, get in the whirlpool. Hey, you never know, you know what I mean? Oh, Joe, I want to be in something hot.

41:47Shannon Sharpe:It ain't no jacuzzi. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

41:54Chad Johnson:Yeah.

41:54Shannon Sharpe:Oh yeah. I don't know what type of time you're on, but bless his heart, Chad. Bless his heart.

42:00Chad Johnson:Hey, Ocho, anytime on the holidays and my family used to come down to Atlanta and everybody, man, we would all go to the practice facility on like Christmas out there. Everybody opened up gifts and we a hoop. Man, it was just stuff like that, bro. That when you look back at them, I'm like, damn, we had some great time. Yeah.

42:21Shannon Sharpe:Hey, I ain't need no holiday to open up something. Hey, hey, hey. It's been a while, y 'all can tell. I've been away from y 'all for a while, so I'm just getting back in the swinger thing. He told me you opened up some presents. Bad look here. Whoo.

42:42Chad Johnson:Yeah.

42:43Shannon Sharpe:Boy, what's a part of time when I was here, when I was well, Joe.

42:46Chad Johnson:Yeah.

42:46Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. Crack leg like Humpty Dumpty. Mean demonstration. Hey. Huh? Mean demonstration. When I was at my 20s, Joe? I already know it. Hey, listen, I'm with you when you're right. Joe, 20? Oh. With all that testosterone I had, hey, what a grandma told me, hey, woo and woo and make your head pop up. Yeah.

43:08Joe Johnson:Fridge Fry.

43:10Shannon Sharpe:Fridge Fry said she ain't got nothing to say to you, man. Joe, let me ask you this. You think Philly can win it all?

43:17Chad Johnson:Yes, I do think Philly can win it all. I think what's going to determine Philly's fate, Anka Ocho, is, I mean, it's health, bro. We can't ignore that. I mean, hell, we got to hope Embiid stay healthy. We got to hope, you know, obviously, Bron stay healthy, you know, with him being up in age. French Fry, what's up, baby? French Fry. Hey, what's up?

43:39Joe Johnson:Say hi. You done got big. Hi. Thanks. He looks just like daddy, huh? Like your daddy. Yeah, see all that hair? Say you got more hair than mommy, cause mommy bald head.

43:51Shannon Sharpe:No, don't say that. Don't say that French fries. Mommy got lots of hair. Man, you know what you call a watcher, man, Ocho. Don't worry about it. Don't worry about it. Nah, we gon' keep the peace. We worried about it.

44:04Chad Johnson:He wanna stand something up on your arm.

44:07Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, yeah.

44:07Chad Johnson:He always on some bull jive. He coming out vacation, he a little spicy. But yeah, if -

44:14Shannon Sharpe:Man Joe, somebody just said, Chad say, Unk, Unk number one, Shea number two, and Shadow number three. They ain't lying. They ain't lying. They ain't lying.

44:27Chad Johnson:They ain't lying. But that's okay though. We don't put no judgment on you, and it don't make you no bad brother.

44:33Shannon Sharpe:That don't make you no bad brother, Joe, because you don't move to the top of the list. You ain't no bad brother because of that. Yeah, man, it is what it is. Hey, Jalen Rose also has some thoughts. He said NBA coverage has become so weak. Weak, excuse me. It's now led by men, women who didn't play or LeBron stands former teammates. Joe, what's your take?

45:02Chad Johnson:He said that the take on, say it again.

45:05Shannon Sharpe:He says NBA coverage has become so weak. is now led by men and women who didn't play or LeBron stans or former teammates.

45:15Chad Johnson:Now, I think it is some of his former teammates, but you got a lot of ex-professional basketball players who's played the game at a high level, who's won championships. Hell, who's won championships? 48:26Ice Cube's Big Three season is heating up. The most competitive basketball league on earth is on CBS this Sunday. The two best teams go head-to-head as Coach Nancy Lieberman and Greg Monroe's Dallas Power take on the one-seed Chicago Triplets, led by Coach Dr. J and Captain Montrez Harrell. Then Coach Gary Payton and the Boston Ball Hogs battle Nasir Corp and the Detroit Amps in a must-win game for Boston. The game played the way you love. Watch live Sunday, August 9th on CBS at 1 p.m. Eastern, 10 a.m. Pacific, and catch replays Monday on BET. Presented by iHeart.

48:56Chad Johnson:With LeBron, and they know what it takes to get to the top. So, you know, they got their breakdowns and critiques of, you know, the game just as well as anybody else, bro. You know what I mean? I don't think it's a bad thing because you ain't played the game, you can't commentate the game. or you ain't, if you got knowledge of the game, you know what I'm saying, and you know what the eye test tells you, you know what I mean, you've done your homework on the game, I don't see nothing wrong with that, bro. But maybe he looking through a different lens, Uncle Ocho.

49:26Shannon Sharpe:Some of the best coaches, some of the best people to analyze games weren't your best players. Right. See, this notion, everybody that played a particular sport that was great, that doesn't mean they can talk about it. Hello. We've seen that. We've seen some of the NFL's best players. We've seen some of the NBA's best players. We've seen some of the best MLB players. Can't talk the game of football. Can't talk the game of baseball. Can't talk the – and talk it – when I say talk it, put it in a context, the casual, the late fan, not the hardened fans. Because the thing that people fail to realize is the casual fans that spend their money.

50:05Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. Regardless of the sport, it's the casual. and put it in a term that they can understand yeah i think i think what makes it so difficult

50:17Joe Johnson:is those that play the game that played it especially at a very high level most of them can't explain it no most most of them can't explain it that's a skill in itself not only be able to play it at a high level but to be able to sit there on camera and explain it and break it down in a way that not just those that do play it but those that don't play it understand exactly what you're talking about. That's very difficult to do. Think about it.

50:42Shannon Sharpe:One of the best football color guys is who? John Madden. Very simplistic. Yes. You got to pull here. You got to pull here. He's circling sweat. Boom, boom, boom. They loved it. How many Emmys did he win? Charles never goes to the board. How many Grammys have Charles won? because at the end of the day, when y 'all want to get down to those hearts, it's still the fans want to be entertained. And boom, and circling sweat, and pulling here, and this guy there, Charles making those comments about people in San Antonio, or this one or that one, or this guy right here, they gone fishing. I bet you the highest segment is when they do the gone fishing.

51:28Shannon Sharpe:I bet you the highest segment is when Shaq is Shaq in the pool. I bet you the highest segment is Shaq when Charles is cracking jokes. about certain demographics in certain areas.

51:43Shannon Sharpe:The casual fan can't, the casual fan doesn't understand what a pin down is. What a one four, what a nail is. What a flare, what a floppy. They don't under the dunker spot. They don't understand. So why would you try to put that on them? Because you want to show how intelligent you are.

52:03Shannon Sharpe:What I look like, what I look like, say Ocho here's the situation here they didn't cover six as a matter of fact there is six kick it would have under for yeah what front

52:17Shannon Sharpe:if you think about it Ocho what did it what what do fans know they know too deep they know man yeah there's so many coverages in between club yeah man and cover two there's so many more

52:31Joe Johnson:coverages yeah yeah it's a small percentage that you understand that that haven't played the game

52:37Shannon Sharpe:but that percentage is small yeah yes that's been observing the game and that's that's that he wants to understand so when he hear people talk he wants to know oh that guy was in a wide nine oh he was in a cowboy oh he's in a seven he's in a five tech oh he's in a three he's in the under he's in he's in a tilt oh they ran a text they went a wax they ran an et a te okay they don't want it oh joe come on the general rule of thumb joe ocho k-i-s-s keep it simple stupid that's it

53:18Shannon Sharpe:i like the fact that there's so many more platforms that give so many more guys an opportunity and normally when guys don't pan out, they move on and give somebody else an opportunity.

53:30Shannon Sharpe:I just wanna know what he wants the coverage gonna be. Because if you just all X's and O's, ain't nobody tuning in for that. Ain't nobody tuning in for that. What you think, Joe?

53:43Chad Johnson:What we talking about, what Jalen Rose talking about, right? Yes. Yeah, I said that, I think people who hadn't played the game before still can be knowledgeable of the game as well and still commentate the game, talk about the game, and give great takes. I don't think you necessarily have to be an ex-professional athlete. There are some people who are really, really great at what they do. Really good. And they study and they do their damn homework and they break it down to the tee.

54:17Shannon Sharpe:Look, I thought Mark Jackson was exemplary. Mark Jackson was not the greatest point guard to play. but his analysis of the game was spot on. Oh, man. Jeff Van Gundy wasn't the best coach, but he did a damn good job. Hubie Brown did a damn good job.

54:37Chad Johnson:Yeah. Them some great ones, boy.

54:42Shannon Sharpe:Game is harder than studio, because studio, you're talking about what has happened or what you think will happen. A color is in real time, and you only got like three seconds.

54:54Chad Johnson:Yeah.

54:56Shannon Sharpe:So at least in football, Ocho, they're going to go back to the huddle and give you an opportunity to talk. In basketball, they get it out of the net. You can't, hey, you can't explain too long where that play was. Hell, they pushing the ball back up the court.

55:06Chad Johnson:Right.

55:09Shannon Sharpe:So I just need J-Row. Hey, J-Row, you know you're welcome to come on anytime you like, bro. I was in Denver when J-Row got there. Kicked it a few times. He a great guy. He's very knowledgeable about the game of basketball. I think he wants more X's and O's and less entertainment in the analysis.

55:29Chad Johnson:Yeah.

55:30Shannon Sharpe:If I were to do this. But, J. Rowe, you know you're welcome to come on anytime. Hit me up. You got my number. As a matter of fact, I'm going to hit you up tomorrow and try to get you on Wednesday. So you can provide more context to what you said because I think it's kind of unfair. And I wanted to comment on it, but I think it's unfair. sometimes things get lost in translation. It gets lost in a tweet. You know, sometimes you put something in an email or you put something in a letter. I want to hear what his thought process is, what he means when he says the NBA coverage is weak, when he says it's led by men and women.

56:08Shannon Sharpe:I mean, yeah, it's a different era now. Women are more involved as far as covering the game, being allowed in the locker room. that happened in 1984 there was an incident that happened I think it was in the New England Patriots and the situation and all hell broke loose y 'all can go look up what happened but it's a different era now J-Roll the women are going to have and I get it women didn't play NBA basketball women didn't play NBA football but they're going to have an opinion and whether you agree with it or disagree with it you like or dislike it it's here to stay and ain't too much we can do about it but I'm going to reach out to you and give you an opportunity and hopefully we can get you on a Wednesday night.

56:51Shannon Sharpe:Chris Bosh spokes on the claim that LeBron is ring-chasing by signing with the Sixers. Everybody chases ring. If you don't think Kobe and Jordan were ring-chasing too, you're crazy.

57:01Chad Johnson:You're absolutely right.

57:05Chad Johnson:Everybody's trying to win. Everybody's trying to win a damn ring. You ain't going into no situation saying that, oh, man, I just want to get through the season. I hope we have a pretty good season. You have championship aspirations. When LeBron James joins your team, that is the ultimate goal, bro. It don't matter what it is, and Bron knows that. That's why, okay, Ocho, when I really think about it, and I kind of can see why he picked Philly to join, because he knows and understands the weapons that he's going to have at his leisure, and he'll be able to control them. So, and he knows.

57:47Shannon Sharpe:Father Time waits for no man. Yes, sir. He's about to be 42. Yep. And he can say his mind's still sharp. He can't do all the things. He can't play 40 minutes like he once could at the level that he once could. He has to pick and choose his spots. And so now he has someone. When he's coasting, Joel Embiid, Jalen Brown, Tyrese Maxey can do a lot of the heavy lifting. And when needed, I can come in and chip in. I'll make sure you guys are in the right place. Just trust me. Let me – hey, I believe in order for you to maximize why you signed him is that you got to let him have the ball in his hands.

58:25Chad Johnson:Yeah. Got to let him play, mate. You got to. I think Philly's definitely going to do that, Uncle Ocho. It's just not going to be like a heavy, heavy dosage of it. Okay, cool. Maybe when we get to the fourth quarter, it's under five minutes and we got a nip and tuck game, we going to trust big fella. You know what I'm saying? Yeah. We're going to trust him because I know. See, the thing is about giving him the ball down the stretch, Arcan Ocho, or in those tough situations, it's not for him necessarily to score because you just know he's going to make the right damn play. You know what I mean? Yes.

58:59Chad Johnson:He's going to find Joel. He's going to find JB in the corner for three. You feel what I'm saying? Yes, Maxie. Yeah, he's going to find Maxie. He's going to make the defense stay honest, and then when you don't double or collapse the defense, then that's when he's going to be able to create his own and get his own. So I think, you know, I don't think there's no overreaction to this Philly thing, man. We talk about ring chasing. I ain't standing up there and ring chasing. Hey, man, I ain't going nowhere. I don't feel like I can't win now. If I'm brawn.

59:31Joe Johnson:And listen, you think about the conversations that I had now too, Uncle Joe, based on where we are now, everything is based off rings. Everything is based off, you know, have you won and say. They did that, Ocho. The ring culture now has it at a point where now the athletes think, well, this is the end goal. That's what you want, you know, but you don't want to have to go to situations that makes it easy for you to do so. So, for one, you win a ring, then they chastise you for going to teams that give you the best chance to do so.

1:00:02Shannon Sharpe:And if you don't, what is it? A lot of, look, people, I'd rather see a guy ring chase as opposed to say, and I'm going to take this money. because more times than not, they want – Jason Kidd, I heard Jason Kidd was on somebody's podcast. He said, oh, no, I won't – he said, no, they want minutes and they want money.

1:00:20Chad Johnson:Yeah.

1:00:23Shannon Sharpe:They want the two M's. In football, we always say when you play the game of football, you want to leave with as many memories and as much money as you possibly can. Give him the choice. Yes, sir. Give me the money. Yeah. Because there's going to be a time I'm going to forget all this ish. Yeah, yeah. With that being said, somebody in the chat said, see, there goes LeBron's teammates taking up for him. What has Dennis Rodman said about Jordan, the best player ever? What has B.J. Armstrong said? What has Steve Kerr said? What has Kobe teammates said about him? You think – hold on. You think a teammate not supposed to stick up for his teammate?

1:00:59Chad Johnson:That's going to happen. That's natural, bro.

1:01:01Shannon Sharpe:People talking about – you give them a choice. Would you rather have throw you the ball? John Elway. Because everybody that you might name, other quarterbacks, they didn't help Shannon Sharp do ish. What wide receiver you want? I want Ed McCaffrey and Rod Smith, and I want TD behind me.

1:01:17Chad Johnson:Yeah.

1:01:18Shannon Sharpe:Why would I pick somebody that didn't help me do anything? I got Super Bowl rings, and I got a gold jacket because of those teammates. And, hey, give me Ray, give me Rod, give me CMAT. Yeah, that's what I want. I want them guys. Yeah. Yeah, I sure do.

1:01:41Shannon Sharpe:I don't get it. Boy, ooh, I sure hate to be some of y 'all friends. Cause boy, hey, somebody got a little bit more prestige, a little bit more money, y 'all gonna forget all about me, Ocho and Joe. Y 'all already told me that's what y 'all gonna do.

1:01:59Chad Johnson:Nah, they ain't gonna forget about it.

1:02:00Shannon Sharpe:He got french fries.

1:02:03Chad Johnson:He like, man, what? He like, damn.

1:02:06Shannon Sharpe:You supposed to have your butt in the bed. I said, nah, it's too early.

1:02:17Shannon Sharpe:That's what you're supposed to do. You trace greatness. Yeah. But the ring culture, y 'all sported, because what y 'all have done, there are guys that have rings that aren't as great. And the prime example I like to use is Charles Barkley. Y 'all make it seem like Charles Barkley was a bum because he ain't got no ring. And there are guys that got two, three rings. they had a third of the players.

1:02:38Chad Johnson:Totally agree.

1:02:39Shannon Sharpe:See, there's a difference between being a great player and being a great player in a role. They're two different things, guys.

1:02:48Chad Johnson:Yeah.

1:02:49Shannon Sharpe:Charles Barkley was a great player. Y 'all better go back and check. Y 'all better go. Hey, y 'all find highlights of everything else. Go check the highlights on Chuck.

1:03:00Chad Johnson:A whole dog out there. Yeah.

1:03:07Joe Johnson:Fat fat.

1:03:09Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. So we gonna put you up.

1:03:15Chad Johnson:Oh Joe, a kid ain't started school, bruh. Nah, nah. School don't start to the tent. We started today, man. I was out there in carpooling everything.

1:03:25Joe Johnson:Yeah. Yeah. I got, let me see. I'm trying to get a mom of the left French fry. Stay with me. Kennedy started school on the 10th. My son started school on the 10th. My daughter, she my daughter that played tennis. She's homeschooled so she could focus on tennis only. She must be nice. Yeah, oh yeah, Joe. She's like that, Joe. Obviously, my daughter that run at University of Kentucky, she go back next week.

1:03:58Shannon Sharpe:I swear we used to go back down there on Labor Day. I don't know where these kids come from. but we didn't get out till damn near the 4th of July hell.

1:04:04Chad Johnson:We didn't used to go back to about mid August, I mean late August. Yeah. Late August, yeah, yeah.

1:04:11Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, I don't know, but as bad as these kids, let them go year round. Hey, hey, hey. Teach ass in school. They get out for everything, every holiday, every presidential, and you know, teachers need a day to prepare the room. Man, we ain't getting no to them days. Them teachers prepare, hey, when you out at recess, if they didn't have what they call that chaperone duties or what you call them. Hey, they was in there getting their room ready then. Hey, nobody, all these holidays and veteran this day and that day, Columbus Day, I don't remember getting all them days off.

1:04:44Chad Johnson:I know. They got fall break, they got winter break, they got spring break. They got, I'm like, how much are you going to - When y 'all going to go to school?

1:04:58Shannon Sharpe:hey better have my daughter i'm getting up early to my daddy we got school i said y 'all ain't got school today why

1:05:06Joe Johnson:hey teacher teacher planning day yes it is a is always always something it's always something

1:05:13Shannon Sharpe:hey hey you can't be a bad guy they need to stay in school yeah look hey i told ojo man

1:05:19Chad Johnson:That school started the day, bro. Carpool like a mug, you know what I mean?

1:05:23Shannon Sharpe:Man, Joe, I don't miss that.

1:05:24Chad Johnson:Ooh, I know, boy. Ooh, damn.

1:05:27Shannon Sharpe:Because my daughter went to Druid Hills. Man, I had to take her early in the morning. I just be getting home, especially Monday. Monday was tough because I didn't get home till like, you know, I get home. By the time I get home, Shia would get in the bed, she getting up, she gotta be to school. I think at like eight. Then I gotta go through that traffic because it's over there by the CDC. all back over there, all that traffic. Then I gotta go back and pick her up. He's like, Daddy, you know I can drive. No, you can't. Not none of my cars.

1:05:58Joe Johnson:Hey, listen, my son trying to get a car now. What do you mean he trying? How old is it? And he a freshman at high school at Miami. He trying to get a car? Yeah, he want a car. Now, all the older kids got a car, so he next in line. but I need your decision making to be a little bit better. I need you to be a little more responsible. Hold on, hold on.
