In short

Nightcap episode focused on NFL quarterback evaluation and team momentum, especially the Patriots’ resurgence, the Jets’ struggles, and a debate over whether Justin Fields is “not the answer” and whether Lamar Jackson is “overrated.”

Guests

Shannon Sharpe (co-host; former NFL Pro Bowler/All-Pro; Bengals Ring of Fame) and Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson (co-host; former NFL Pro Bowler/All-Pro). No other guests mentioned.

Key claims

  1. Patriots look dominant after Mike Vrabel’s coaching impact; Drake May is playing like a high-precision QB in his second year.
  2. Jets’ offense can’t get off the field; Justin Fields lacks consistency and confidence, with low yards-per-attempt and missed throws.
  3. Lamar Jackson being labeled “overrated” is criticized as clickbait; Sharpe argues his MVP value and impact aren’t overrated even without a Super Bowl.

Notable examples

  • Patriots vs Jets: Patriots win 27-14; May stats cited (25/34, 281 yards, 1 TD).
  • Fields examples: multiple games with very low passing yard totals; Cleveland loss includes 42 yards on a screenplay; final-drive passing mentioned (75 yards).
  • Patriots defense: Christian Gonzalez praised as top-tier; Stingley Jr. and Gonzalez compared as elite corners.

They looked impressive. The Jets aren't good, but the Patriots look good. I mean, those first couple of drives, Drake May was Brady-esque. I'm talking about precision. Yes, he was nice. Stephon Diggs has been reinvigorated. He looks good. Travion Henderson is running extremely hard.

6:03Shannon Sharpe:Two touchdowns on the ground, one in the air. Drake made 25 of 34, 281, one touchdown. I thought overall, I thought they played well.

6:15Shannon Sharpe:But before we get to the Jets, let's highlight the Patriots, Ochoa. Yeah, okay, okay. Mike Vrabel has done an unbelievable job. You go, I'm going to let you go ahead and go. Hell of a job. Hell of a job. Listen, Mike Vrabel, I'm not sure what he did once he got there, but he's done one hell of a job. Obviously, it makes things much easier when you have a quarterback that's playing out of his mind and only his second year in Drake May. In the division, they 3-0. Obviously, the talk has always been the supposed to go to the Super Bowl. This is their year. The Buffalo Bills, they're 2-2 in the division.

6:49The goddamn Patriots have dominated all season long. Being 9-2, this is something I wasn't expecting. Being the fan of the game of football that I am, I didn't think they would be this good. They have been really, really well. And because of the quarterback play, obviously the supporting cast, the defense has played well. Stephon Diggs is playing out of his mind. He's playing out of his mind. He's been playing very, very good football. Matt Collins out there making plays. Douglas doing well as well. And Trayvon – is it Trayvon Henderson? Am I saying it right? Trayvon Henderson? Trayvon? Man, listen.

7:21But Young Bull, nice, boy. Young Bull is real – I think so. Young Bull, real nice. He's one of the few running backs too on the field that can hit his head off the goalpost. Oh, he got speed to play with. He got speed to burn. So, man, they look really good. They look really good tonight, man. And on defense, hey, that got, hey, that goddamn Christian Gonzalez, hey, he nice. Oh, he fluid. Hey, listen, he nice. I know he's been injured a little bit, but he needs to be in the conversation of top five DBs, especially. Oh, yeah, yeah, he is.

7:55Shannon Sharpe:I mean, you know, PS2 Stingley Jr., him yeah you know those those are those are your top uh uh i guess people like jc horn some people like jc horn but i think i think gonzalez i think ps2 and i think uh uh stingley jr i think those are the top three corners in my book because they all present yes oh very very very different now gonzalez and ps2 college they got kind of same similar body types they're tall angular uh stingley is a little bit more compact, probably a little bit, a little more, a little, because a little, probably a little stronger because of the way he, the way he's built. But if you look at the way PS2 and the way he glides, he and Gonzalez have a very, very similar game.

8:40Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. Yeah, Treviar and Hennessy, yeah, he had two rushing, one in there. Yeah, they threw him one. But yeah, this is, Ocho, this is a very good team. They're very well coached. And now you see why. That after one year, Mr. Kraft's like, you know what, Gerard, I really hate to pull the plug this quick, but this coach is proven and is too good to pass up. And if we don't do this now, there's a good chance. He'd be going somewhere else. Yeah, he'd be going somewhere else. Because if you think about it, the Falcons interviewed Mike Brable, Mike McDonald at Seattle. they interviewed like four guys that are doing extremely well right now and they settled on Raheem Horst and Raheem's gonna have to get this thing he's gonna have to get this thing turned around but just watching New England they don't beat themselves uh I I know you know Vrabel doesn't really mention a whole lot but I think he took a whole lot playing under coach Belichick you the mannerism that he's not as he's not as stoic on the sideline he's waiting to give his guys high fives coming off the field he's waiting to hug his guys you watch him in the hallway Ocho when they're coming out the field after Big Rick, he's hugging everybody.

9:51Shannon Sharpe:Hey, come on, get in here. Come on, let's go. He's a guy I would love to play for. He's the type of guy that you love to play for because he ain't going to sugarcoat it now, Ocho. You know exactly where you stand with Mike Vrabel. Yes, sir. Ocho. Take your time. Take your time. I tweeted a little bit, but I just stopped tweeting because people, you know, I think people are like, man, you pick it on the guy. But at some point in time, Ocho, I'm not so sure Justin Fields is going to ever be what a lot of people thought he would become. Ocho, let me give you some of these stats. He was 3-4-11. He got injured in the fourth quarter for 27 yards.

10:35Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. He played the entire game against the Broncos. He was 9-17 for 45 yards. He played the entire game against the Carolina Panthers. He was 6 of 12 for 46 yards. And lost to Cleveland. He was 6 of 11 for 54 yards. And 42 of those yards came on a screenplay. Screenplay at the Brees Hall. Tonight, before the final drive, he had 75 yards passing. Yes, sir. I think A.D. Mitchell left his hands in Indy. Yeah. Hey, oh, listen. Listen. Now, he ended the game with 75 yards, right? No, he had 116, but before that final drive, he got 41 of the 116. Right. So one of the things I do want to say, before we pile on Justin Field, I want to talk about some of the drop passes.

11:28A.D. Mitchell, two big plays. Two big plays in the first half. Before half, you got to have those. Especially that goal ball. Yeah. Oh, man, you got to have that. Hey, it's perfect, though. Outside, shoulder, away from the defense.

11:43Shannon Sharpe:You can't ask for anything more than that, Ocho. You got to have – that's perfect red line. You pull that in. Then the wheel route, the out and up. You know, adjust yourself. Slow down a little bit. You know, perfect ball. Outside shoulder, DB has no way to make a play. Has no way to make a play. You got to have that. So those are passes that you got to help your quarterback out sometimes. You got to help your quarterback. And that's why the stats look the way they look. Sometimes they drop passes. He had a couple of drops, but there was a couple, Ocho. He had 80, and 80 probably would have dropped it.

12:18Shannon Sharpe:But he had him on the hitch. Ocho, he had him on the hitch. Ocho, that's a simple pitch and catch. He threw a wide. Ocho, you put that on him. Because here's the thing. The DB is probably retreating. You put that on him, now I'm going to face you up. There's a chance I can make you miss. At least, at least, I caught it at five. At bare minimum, Ocho, I'm going to get a first down. I might make you miss and get even more. I'm like, Justin, to start the game, you can't, because what do we always say, Ocho? Give me something. I just want to get my hand. I just want to touch the ball. Just let me touch it.

12:52Shannon Sharpe:You ain't got to give me nothing sophisticated. Just let me catch a hit. Let me catch a stick. Let me catch a shallow cross. I just want to touch the ball. You give it to me early, you got me late. Justin, how on a five-yard hitch route, you miss a guy that far outside? and listen and that that goes for the quarterback too most of the time some quarterback they don't want to come out with anything they want something short they want a nice little check down to get themselves in a rhythm you know to get a feeling for the game and not not really chase the game but allow the game to come to them and and that's that's what you want you want to slant you want to you want some one some you know short but i think i think right now i'm i'm not sure with as bad as the Jets are, everyone around Justin Fields has to be almost dead.

13:40But they don't have that. They have to raise their level of play. They got to raise their level of play to catch up or to make sure they can overcome for Justin's mistakes or his lack of confidence right now. You have to. That's what you need. You need that kind of dog out there. And he didn't play tonight. I think Gary Wilson is on IR right now. So he's going to miss the next now three games after tonight. And then boy, they got the mustard up. They got the mustard up. You know, those that are there, John Meachie made some plays. John Messi, I'm sorry, I apologize, Messi. Yeah, he made some plays tonight.

14:18Tight end, you know, little check down play. But that's... Yeah, you got to have that catch.

14:21Shannon Sharpe:That tight end on the fourth down, you got to hold that one. You got the first down and you get lazy because you take it so long to submit the ball to you. The guy's driving. And bring it in. Yeah, he's driving on the end. Damn. He knocked it down. but outside of that, man, listen, the Jets, they didn't play that bad. They didn't. They really just couldn't get off the field in that first half, Ocho. They couldn't get off the field. Yeah. I mean, they get them in third. They get them in third and four, third and five, they get a first down. They get them in third and ten, they get a first down.

14:53Shannon Sharpe:They just could not get off the field. And I'm like, okay, they rushed three, they rushed four, they bring pressure, and they still didn't get there. I'm like, well, damn, how difficult. I mean, man, how difficult is it? And you're right, and I think a lot of times the drops, maybe that messes with Justin Fields' confidence because he's like, well, am I doing something? What am I doing wrong? Because he'll throw one terrible, and then he'll drop a dime. He'll throw two terrible, and he'll throw another dime. He had A.D. Mitchell again on the go. He had Gonzalez in the ass with the ball. I thought he was playing pen to tail on the donkey.

15:27Shannon Sharpe:I said, well, damn. He had him. He hit Gonzalez in the ass. Yeah, he was beat. And that's the thing. When you get a guy beat down there, Ocho, you know you're already struggling as an offense. You can't miss offense. And that's what I tweeted. I said, Mitchell, you're not that good offensively. You're not that good of a team to overcome those kind of mistakes. That's a flat-out draw. And they're not. And you're saying, okay, you get a guy like Justin Fields and he's struggling. But they don't have the receivers. They don't have a Chase or a Jetta or one of these top-flight receivers or a couple of them.

16:05Shannon Sharpe:They need more than one. They need a couple of them that can elevate them. And I just – I just – Yeah, it sucks. It sucks. It sucks. And listen, not only that, they're not playing well. They let two of their best players on defense go. Obviously, you got players for them, so you would hope those players that you got in the trade can step up and play the par. And obviously, it's AD's first week. This is his first game too, right? This is his first game. This ain't the first time he caught a pass. This ain't the first time he ran a race. You tell me it's football. You say no matter where you go, wherever you play.

16:44Right, right, right, right, right. Listen, I'm not making no excuses for him. You have to make those plays. You have to. You got to. And with Justin Fields out, excuse me,

16:53Shannon Sharpe:with Garrett Wilson out, you're supposed to be their best receiver. because at the Colts they had high expectations until you got into Shane Steichen's doghouse with that fumble. It was never the same after that. Now maybe there was something going on. Maybe that was the final straw that broke the Campbell's back Ocho but from that point on it wasn't the same. Copenhagen's spit-free pouches are packed full of American grown tobacco. Made for welders. Stuck behind masks. More mechanics.

We cruised around L.A. in the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and dove into the fascinating life of actress and inventor Hedy Lamarr. Want the full story? Take a listen. Hedy, she starts dating Howard Hughes, the aviation tycoon. Do you know a lot about him? I mean, I watch The Aviator, so I know everything Leonardo DiCaprio has allowed me to know about him. But incredible innovator. Right. She says he's a, quote, very strange man. But they do get along really well. Give us examples.

20:20I know. They do get along intellectually. And in fact, she helps him design a faster plane. She takes a look at what he's designed. It's got these square wings. And she's like, that doesn't make sense. And so she finds the fastest bird and the fastest fish and sketches out a drawing of like what the two would look like as a plane. And that becomes the plane that we know today. And he calls her a genius. Check out our new episode spotlighting groundbreaking innovators like Hedy Lamarr and Billie Jean King. Presented by the Hyundai Ioniq 5. Goodbye.

20:53Shannon Sharpe:No, but I just don't know how. You throw for 27 yards in a game. You throw for 45 yards in a game. You throw for 46 yards in a game. You throw for 54 yards in a game. And you throw for 116, and 41 of that came on the final draft. I just don't know how you move on and become what people thought you were going to become when they took you as a top draft pick. I think you were 15 to 16, something like that, Ocho. I just don't see the consistency. I don't see him, one, two, check it down. one two three out of bounds one two three gone i don't see that and you know as a quarterback the really good ones yes back foot hit okay i'm dropping back i know the play ocho i'm dropping back already done going through it okay we've gone through it through the course of the week cover one we go here cover two we go there quarters we go here cover five we go there Sky, six, we already know.

21:57Shannon Sharpe:So when you back it up, the safety's already told you what it's due. Single high safety, oh, I know where I'm going right now. Oh, he's covered. Let me see where two is. Is two there? Okay, let me take this check down. Oh, Joe, see, it seems like he got a dial-up service. He ain't got that 5G. They say they got 10G up in China. Say, hey, you cut the bone up, and it's already gone to what you're looking for. Yeah, yeah, most definitely. I think the fact that also with the offensive line not playing as well as they should be, he's rushing everything a little bit, not being able to go through his progression and understand, listen, pre-snap, okay, I'm seeing what they're doing.

22:34And once that ball snaps, you know, obviously you want that head straight down the field, not giving anything away and not having the time to be able to go through his read. In progression, I think he speeds things up and hurries throws. He rushes throws to hurry to get the ball out of his hands too.

22:50Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. I mean, Ocho, I'm looking at against Buffalo, he averaged 2.5 yards of the temp. Against the Broncos, 2.6 yards per attempt. Against Carolina, 3.8 yards per attempt. Against Cleveland, 4.9 yards of attempt. That's not even a running back average. It's squat if he's doing that. Right. Imagine if you're a quarterback and that's what your yards per attempt is. That is horrible. Yeah, it's bad, but also, you know what else? it also comes down to the weapons around you it also it also comes down to what do you have what is your supporting cast like now you take a justin fields here hypothetically speaking right so you keep the same offense and you put a jamar chase or you put a justin jefferson you put a t higgins or you put any of the top tier top tier receivers on that team together you know a one in a one or a one in a one or a decent 1A1B, 1A2 yeah, it looks completely different because they can overcome for all the woes that Justin Fields may be having, they can overcome all that the small stuff, you got Jamar Chase crazy ass, can take a god damn slant and a god damn hitch, 80 yards you got T Higgins any ball you throw to him, which was considered for most receivers 50-50, hell with him it's 90-10 like small stuff like that when you have players that that that can elevate their play to overcome for your your shortcomings it makes things easier but they just don't have that therefore everybody else has to raise their level of play and damn near be perfect but and that that's the issue that's the issue they have look at the guys that you just mentioned they had their best seasons if you think about it what do the guys do really well process information really really quickly oh yeah Go back and look at Joe Burrell.

24:42Shannon Sharpe:Now go back and look at Joe Flacco. It doesn't even look like Chase is falling off. Because Joe Flacco back foot hit, I'm going to him. Cousins or Sam Darnall, you couldn't tell who was in there with Jetta. Because they process information quickly. That is the number one thing. How well do you download information and how quickly can you disseminate it? I don't care. I don't care what type of arm you got. I don't care what I got for leg you got. Can you, hey, if I input that information, Ocho, how soon can you spit it back out? Yeah, and the funny thing about it is not only being able to process it, not only being able to spit it out, but you know what makes it even easier?

25:27The motherfucker you throw into on the other hand of the ball. But I, Ocho, it makes it that much easier.

25:33Shannon Sharpe:But see, now you got me, okay. I run a hitch route. Now you got me Well do I need to slide or do I need to slide Because I'm anticipating because I don't know where it's going to be I know normally I'm going to get a hitch I'm going to get it in the framework of my body Ocho Because he's not going to be under pressure Because it's 1, 2, 3, boom, ball's out So he's not going to be up under pressure So I think I'm going to get the ball somewhere in here Here, here Ocho, not out here Yeah, yeah So it makes it difficult it's like sometimes when you're dealing with a mobile quarterback, it's hard to adjust to them, Ocho, because I run my route, and next thing I know he way over, the crowd's screaming.

26:14Shannon Sharpe:I'm like, damn, what happened? He way over there. I'm like, well, damn. So it's hard when your quarterback is inconsistent. I don't give a damn who the receiver is. You want some consistency at that position, but you want somebody that can digest information. The coach put it in, and he spit it right back out in the form of getting the ball out of his hand. I hope I'm wrong. I pray I'm wrong, but I just don't know if he's ever going to be what many thought he would be, especially when you look at the game that he had against – who did he play against Clemson? You look at that game that he had against Clemson, and he was sensational.

26:55Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. And I was like, okay, now, playing with those guys that he had, a lot of a Garrett Wilson and all those guys we understand see see but you realize once you get to the NFL the likelihood of you having five receivers that are five stars or or be that type of guy the likelihood is not very good yeah does he have a chase no does he have a jetter does he have any of the top top receivers no not no wait now now what I will say now what I will say he does have Garrett Wilson. Now, Garrett Wilson was, who had a phenomenal, who had a phenomenal rookie year. With lesser quarterbacks, if you look at them, Ocho, if you look at them, if you just put them on paper and you say, look at what was thrown to Garrett Wilson when he won Offensive Rookie of the Year, and you look at what's thrown to Garrett Wilson.

27:46Shannon Sharpe:Now, if you just look on the play, just eight, you're like, man, with Justin Fields, he about to go crazy. And he played with him in college. Yes. Yes. Yeah. Yeah, I mean, listen, Garrett Wilson is a phenomenal talent. Nothing should taper off when you have a talent like that. It's so easy. When you look at what they're able to do with Devontae Adams and Pooh and Nakua, hell, JSN, and obviously I don't think the Jets offensive coordinator has that kind of creativity to put in you and Justin Fields to use Garrett Wilson in the right type of way to create those mismatches like the other teams do.

28:23I ain't got nobody to get in the ball, Ocho.

28:25Shannon Sharpe:I can give you all the nice ingredients I want, but if you can't cook, what the hell have I done? I spent a whole lot of money on great food, great ingredients, and I know you can't make a dish with it. It comes down to it, Ocho. Go look at Chop and the Iron Chef, and they get these people, okay, I'm going to give you chocolate. I'm going to give you onions. I'm going to give you stone crabs. And I'm like, how did you even think of this? Yes. But you give somebody, you give them, oh, okay, I'm going to give you steak. I'm going to give you this. I'm going to give you that. And you're like, what I'm supposed to make?

29:08Shannon Sharpe:I just, I hope I'm wrong, Chad. I really do. But I just, and I've seen him and I've watched him. Now, this man has gone through three head coaches and probably four offensive coordinators. Yeah. And sometimes you get lucky and you get a Sean McVay or you get a Kyle Shanahan, but I just don't know it because at the end of the day, the quarterback position is all about processing information and spitting it back out. That's what it comes down to. It is. I don't care how big your arm is. I don't care how fast your legs are. Can you process it, Ocho? Because that's a whole different ballgame because not only must you process it, Ocho, You got to realize they got five.

29:52Shannon Sharpe:On most occasions, they got four guys that's really trying to tell your damn head off. Oh, yeah, absolutely. You in fear for your life, but also you got to calm yourself down and say, you know what? Yeah. One, two, check down. One, two, up. Throw it out of bounds. One, two, F that. I'm out. Yeah. It's all about that clock in your head. You know what, Joe? maybe maybe maybe put him in maybe put him in hurry up the game because it seems like you know when he's in hurry up he's better yeah yeah and then fumble no yeah i mean listen that that's on the that's on the center too that's on the center come on that's the nfl now put the put put the snap at the means it should be the snap the snap should come in the same area every single time.

30:44You go through that all goddamn week. I mean, like, come on now. Come on, center. Don't do that. Don't do that. A little.

30:52Shannon Sharpe:Man, the ball hit his ankles. But you know what? It's just that, you know, take that away. They got three points out of that. Give the defense credit because I thought the defense gave up one touchdown and two field goals in the second half. Yeah. They did force a three and out on the first possession. of the second half, which is kudos. You know, you see, I think the Jets won the toss, and they took the ball, they drove the ball right down the field, something they normally don't do. It normally ends in a punt or turnover, and they drove the ball. I think they had the ball like 14 plays and drove the ball and punched it in the end zone.

31:31Shannon Sharpe:But I just, Lord, I hope I'm wrong, but I just don't see where he's ever going to be more than what he is. I don't think he's ever going to be turning to what – and that's okay because everybody ain't going to be a Lamar Jackson. Everybody's not going to be Josh Allen or Patrick Mahomes. But, I mean, I think if the Jets could be okay, if he was just like middle of the road, you just can't be – you can't be the bottom tier. I'm not saying you got to be top tier. But, I mean, if we got that kind of – if we got – Chad, you can see this. If we got this much space, can you be somewhere in here and not be down here?

32:05In the middle. Right. Can we get that, Ocho? you know what else it all comes down to not only all the intangibles and all the nuances that we're talking about but unless you got confidence on ain't nothing happening you got to be able to play with confidence you have to be able to play with confidence in everything that you do and one of the most important positions where you need confidence

32:32Shannon Sharpe:is the most important the most important the most important Because if you don't believe your body language, your aura is going to say, if you don't believe, I don't believe either. I mean, if you don't trust your skill, why you want me? That's why I used to get in the car, somebody butt in their seatbelt, fasten their seatbelt. Hell, I fasten mine. You know something I don't. Complete.

33:03Shannon Sharpe:So, I've been around quarterbacks. When they walk into the huddle, you know. they know what the hell they're doing and they give you the confidence that you know what the hell you're doing exactly exactly exactly I hope they get it together I'm not sure what direction they're going to go in but the way they've started so far and letting sauce go and letting oh yeah wait listen you going to start over with a quarterback you going to start with a new quarterback You're going to draft another one? I believe so. I don't know if there's any quarterbacks that's going to become available. Yeah. Probably Sam Donald didn't want any parts of New York again, which I wouldn't blame him.

33:51Shannon Sharpe:But look, every day it seems like I hear a story about somebody that played there having an interaction with the owner, and it's never positive, and it's never good. Right. Yeah. And with that situation, I hope AG gets at least three years because it's not like you had a powerful roster to begin with and now you stripped him of his two best defensive players. So he's got to get at least two years. And without a quarterback, you can give him five years and he's still not going to get it done. Because you're not as hard. It's damn near impossible. And I know when y 'all did it in 22 ,000 with the Raiders, with Trent Dilfer, They don't allow you to play football like that.

34:33No, absolutely not.

34:34Shannon Sharpe:You don't play football like that anymore. The rules are different. So, no, there's nobody winning another Super Bowl like we wanted or like Tampa won it in 02. You're not because they won't allow you to play defense like that. Your quarterback is going to have to stand in the pocket and he's going to have to make plays throwing the effing football. Yeah, he's going to be able to use his legs to get out of harm's way some, but he's going to have to be able to throw the football. the days of oh we got a killer defense and we're gonna run the ball no you're not no no you're not you're not you're not gonna you're not gonna win very many games like that because once the team gets ahead on you once the team gets ahead of you 10 14 points and you can't run your way back into a game absolutely let me ask you this Ocho do you like Kyler Murray because I believe there's I believe there's gonna be a separation of church and state in in Arizona uh-huh yeah most definitely because I think Kyler Murray is healthy.

35:31Me, personally, I think he's healthy. But they're continuing to want to go with Jacoby Brissett based on how he looked and how the offense moved with him the few weeks he's been in. If they do part ways with him, I'm sure Kyler Murray will be somewhere else next year. Yes, for sure. How would it look over in New York? I'm not sure. I'm not sure if it's a fit. It all depends on AG. Obviously, outside of AG, you got to go to the higher powers and see if that's something they want to look into, or do you want to go into the draft? Now, when you think about some of the quarterbacks coming into the draft this year, is there a franchise-altering quarterback that can come in there and change a franchise?

36:12I haven't seen anything like that this year. There have been some that have played good, but nothing that just blows you out the water like, you know what, that guy, we got to have him.

36:21Shannon Sharpe:I agree. I haven't seen that yet. I haven't seen it either, Ocho. So we'll see how this plays out. Copenhagen spit-free pouches are packed full of American-grown tobacco.

39:31I know. Goodbye.

40:04Shannon Sharpe:Ocho, Mike Brable was apparently very close to landing the Jets job before the Patriots job opened. Reporter Connor Hughes explained that if New England hadn't fired Gerard Mayo following his 4-13 season, he believed Brable would have been the helm of the New York right now. And truthfully, he was interested in the Jets as the Jets were interested in him. If the Patriots job hadn't opened, I genuinely believe that Brable would have been going to take the job. They wanted Mike Rabel more than anything else. So that's when he was the only way to take the Patriots job. They made a last second call.

40:37Shannon Sharpe:Is anything we can do to give you the job? Full control, more money. What do you want? What more can we do to change your mind? Ocho? Yeah. If you interviewed him, he should have never left your building. You should have, hey, listen, you got to do that. You got to understand. You got to understand. a coach like that which is why mr crab did what he did why mr crab he understood he understood the assignment ain't nowhere in hell we have a quarterback i think we just have the right person in charge you know with a little structure with a little discipline that can instill that patriot way you know gerard mayo i think was well capable of doing so they just didn't play well for gerard mayo for whatever reason i don't know but the team looks completely different under the tutelage of goddamn Mike.

41:29They look like a totally different team. Listen, hey, I don't know why, but listen, I don't think Mike Graber would have had success in New York anyway. He wouldn't have had success. Hell, if you were going to have success, if you couldn't do it at Tennessee, you damn sure weren't going to be able to do it in New York.

41:44Shannon Sharpe:I think Tennessee got with him prematurely. That's what I think. I think the thing is, if you listen to Dave, he and the owners started butting heads. You know how it is Ochoa. and you know I guarantee she would she have Mike Brable now she's finding out the hard way she's finding out the hard way I think the thing is when you're in that type of position you're in ownership or you're in leadership the one thing you can't beat is impulsive get mad you're fired

42:24Shannon Sharpe:you can't do that even though sometimes i understand that you won't you might want to you're never working this industry again right she brable had i mean think about it and then they they they they let derrick henry go and they ended up trading uh uh uh aj brown yes yes hey listen horrible decision but aj wanted out but they were making horrible decisions they wouldn't pay it was to try to yeah that too but the trade was to try and better their team let's see what we can get for them and see if we can improve our team they drafted brother trailing burks who was supposed to i think i got my camera cut off yeah um i mean that that didn't pan out that didn't pan out too well so i mean it's just they've been making some bad business decisions when it comes to not only players but the coaches yes the coaches well you you have you have a super bowl winning coach that knows what it takes to win.

43:23He knows how to build a team, obviously. Coming from the new way, the Patriot way, coming from New England, you know what? I have the formula. I know what it takes. It's not going to be the snap of a finger and you can't just take money and throw money at it. I need time. Now, and with that time, I need you to give me a quarterback. If you give me a quarterback, I'll take care of the rest. He goes to New England, he has a quarterback. Okay, you know what now we set we have a franchise quarterback for the next 10 to 15 years now Mr. Kraft let me let me do the rest let me do the rest so what we see from the Patriots right now we finna see this for the next 10 12 15 years for sure because the one thing that you know about Mr.

44:05Shannon Sharpe:Kraft is that he'll get he'll step out of the way yes step out of the way now do I think he has more in common with Brable than he did Coach Belichick? Yes, I do. I think under normal circumstances, Mr. Kraft and Coach Belichick probably would have butted heads. But in a situation like where we're in, Ocho, I'm mining gold and we're still finding it.

44:33Shannon Sharpe:And now if Brable takes that job and they can entice Sam Darnold to come back, because I do think Sam Darnold says, okay, here's a coach that has control. I ain't got to worry about ownership. I ain't got to worry about no general manager. Mike Rabel got control. I'm not saying he has as much control, but who's the general manager? Didn't the general manager come back with Rabel? Yeah. Because at the end of the day, Ocho, some people take jobs, and I'm just happy to have a job. They ain't got no sale over the 53. They ain't got no sale over the 50 free agency. They ain't got no sale to draft. Yeah, that's hard.

45:13That's hard. That's hard to be a coach.

45:15Shannon Sharpe:Or was he already there? I know he got – You heard me? I think Brable more than likely has sale over 53 and has some, say, obviously draft. Absolutely. Because he knows what he wants. He knows the type of player. He knows the system that he's trying to run. He knows the type of player that he needs to fit said system. Players he needs, yes. That's why Coach Belichick, a lot of times when he drafted players, he wouldn't work them out himself. but he needed to talk to him. Because the thing is, you can't have a big ego and play for Coach Belichick. Nah. Because you say, well, check your ego at the door.

45:47Shannon Sharpe:Nah, you got to leave your ego at home. Because see, if you check it at the door, you might, hey, sneak, hey, ain't nobody will care. Go back and get it. Yeah, nah, that ain't going to work. Nope. That ain't going to work. As a matter of fact, it's probably not going to work with Ray Belichick. Absolutely not. Hey, hold on. What's the first thing we say about Stephon Diggs? What's the first thing everyone says about Stephon Diggs? Well, hell, he looks like a whole different person. He seemed like a whole different person. No. That's just when you walk in that door in New England and just something about that atmosphere.

46:16They always talk about the Patriot way. I can't explain it. I was there. It just, the aura, the atmosphere, it's just you check yourself at the door.

46:26Shannon Sharpe:The standard is the standard. Automatically. You just do it.

46:31Shannon Sharpe:Is that your sound or my sound? No, you're not wrong with me. Because you were speaking out. Your mouth was moving. I didn't hear nothing. oh my bad my bad my bad you know I you know I be talking so goddamn fast man my bad yeah but uh man I I look the Patriots gonna be good for a long time and what we thought was a foregone conclusion that Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills are gonna run this division for the next 10 years that's not gonna be the chase yeah there's gonna be a dogfight in this division yeah there's gonna be a dogfight in this division oh between two teams oh for sure between two teams.

47:08It's going to be always for the next decade. It's going to be the Patriots or the goddamn Bills. I agree. Oh, not your guppies? Who?

47:20Shannon Sharpe:Your guppies. Oh, no. Listen, the Dolphins and the Jets are in the same boat. They're in the same because they finna scrap and clean house too. They are. Ocho, Bleacher Report ranks his top five most overrated quarterbacks. They named Lamar Jackson as the most overrated quarterback in the NFL. He said, he may not just be one of today's most overrated active quarterbacks, but also of all time. His two-time MVP status is borderline fraudulent. His credentials don't measure up to other legends who've won the award on numerous occasions. Of the 10 players that have joined multiple MVP clubs during the Super Bowl era, Jackson is the lone member without a Super Bowl ring.

48:02Shannon Sharpe:All the others on that list include Johnny Unitas, Peyton Manning, Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, Brett Favre, Joe Montana, Steve Young, Kurt Warner, Patrick Mahomes, were able to take their team to multiple Super Bowl appearances and won at least once. Jackson has yet to even reach the big game. He's 3-5 lifetime in playoffs and has a 375 postseason winning percentage that stands far away the worst among multiple MVP winners. First of all, Steve Young did not take no team to multiple MVPs. He was a backup. He took his team to one Super Bowl, and he did win it. That was in 1994. He threw six touchdowns in Miami to beat the Chargers.

48:43Shannon Sharpe:So let's – I like to give context. Steve Young did not go to multiple Super Bowls. Now, also, if I'm not mistaken, I think Earl Morrow – didn't Earl Morrow start one of those Super Bowls for the Colts?

49:15.

49:17Shannon Sharpe:Oh, you had a two and a, Johnny United's did or Earl? Earl was. Yeah. . No, it's Miami. Miami. Johnny went to two Colts went to two Super Bowls? I know they beat the Cowboys on the field goal. He was only there for the Colts when they won the night he's done a big deal. With Johnny? Yeah. Okay. Okay.

49:58Look, I get it.

50:01Shannon Sharpe:Yes. And Ocho, we talked about this. This is the only, this is the albatross. This is the elephant in the room. You see the names that are on this list that have won multiple MVPs. Lamar is the only one that hasn't been to a Super Bowl. That's not to say Ocho, his career is not ending tomorrow. No, absolutely not. Everybody jumped on me when I said his career will be looked at as a disappointment if he doesn't get to a Super Bowl considering what he had accomplished. You base it on what these other guys. So you can't just look, well, he won two MVPs. You got to look at the company that he's in that's won two MVPs.

50:43Shannon Sharpe:Now you start looking at it. You're like, well, damn. He has to get to one. Aaron Rodgers went to one. he has to get to at least one and then we look at him totally different he gets to one and he wins it we look at him differently Ocho we just do yeah absolutely but yeah listen I understand the company that he keeps the fact that he's won two MVPs the fact that he's won those MVPs those that are in the chat that are listening that are watching you have to understand that he's in a different he's in a class of his own in a different class for that matter so when it comes to judging him he judged based off his his um what he's not compadres what's the word i'm looking for his peers in the company his peers he's he's he judged based on his other peers that have won mvps as well and most of them if not all have been to a super bowl whether they won a super bowl or not so he drove off off of that but the whole overrated part is the part i don't like that's the part i don't like saying that he's overrated because he hadn't gotten there yet when he's still playing and only a seventh, maybe eighth year.

51:46I'm not sure which one it is. It's ridiculous for that matter.

51:49Shannon Sharpe:I think 18 was Lamar's first year. Yeah, okay, but nothing about Lamar Jackson. What he bring to the table, what he bring to the NFL, what he bring to the Baltimore Ravens in general and giving them a chance and having them in contention every goddamn year, nothing about that is overrated. That's the part I don't like. Now that is more, to me, is more clickbait. There should be a different title when it comes to talk about the quarterbacks that have won MVPs and have been or won a Super Bowl, the title should be goddamn different. Overrated my goddamn ass. Now, that's a bunch of bullshit. Let me ask you a question.

52:23Shannon Sharpe:But when you're looking at him, here's the thing. See, you're looking at him against his peers. They're looking at him against his peers that have won two MVPs. So when you look at him, look at the class that he's in. You compare him to my homeboy. Two MVPs, five Super Bowl appearances. three wins. You look at Peyton Manning, five MVPs, three Super Bowl appearances, two wins. You look at Tom Bright, move on. You look at Brett Favre. How about this? Everybody on that list, everybody on that list except one person is already done and not playing anymore. Everybody on that list is done and not playing.

53:07How about we wait until he's done playing and then we justify whether he belongs in that company or not or whether he's overrated or not. And even if he doesn't go to a goddamn Super Bowl, what he's going to continue to do, the resume that he's going to put together, whether he wins three more MVPs and doesn't make a goddamn Super Bowl or not, nothing about Lamar Jackson is overrated. I know the fact the way we judge quarterbacks is based on wins and losses and rings and hardware and all that. But when it comes down to the nitty gritty, when you're talking to people that played the game? Forget the media, forget the pundits, forget those that never played the game.

53:45Nothing about young Bull out of goddamn Pompano who played for Boynton Beach High School is overrated. Whether he has a goddamn ring or not, he will still go down as one of the best, the best quarterbacks to ever play this goddamn game. How do we judge Dan Marino? Do we say Dan Marino's not one of the greats because he didn't want to ring?

54:06Shannon Sharpe:Yes, but see, here's the thing, Ocho. G-R-E-A-T. Great. Now, if we add E-S-T, one of the greatest, that's what he's going for. You see, you said something very interesting, and this is actually true. Only quarterbacks get measured by wins and Super Bowl. No other position, Super Bowls matter. Okay. Right. Not like they do for a quarterback because, Ocho, even when Brady wasn't putting up numbers like Peyton Manning, they said he was better than Manning because what did he have that Manning didn't? Championships. Think about it now. Peyton Manning had won multiple, multiple MVPs. Brady had three Super Bowls.

54:57Shannon Sharpe:Manning had three regular season MVPs. They said, well, Brady's better. because Brady has, as you was pointing to your fingers, that's how they, I don't set the rules. You see what happened with ring culture? You see. What has it done? It'll make people jump around and go try to find the best situation where they can win a ring and then they shut you up and it's like, okay, I've already done what I needed to do now. No more argument. No more argument. At that point, especially when it comes to basketball, you have those that have to chase the ring because of ring culture and the rules, the unwritten rules, matter of fact.

55:35How about that? The unwritten rules, because who the hell came up with it? Who the hell came up with it?

55:40Shannon Sharpe:I don't know. Because they were saying Jordan was better than Magic, and Magic had five rings. They were saying Jordan was better than Bird, and Bird had three MVPs and three rings. He's the last guy to win three consecutive MVPs. You got to go all the way back to Wilt. So what has happened is that now I give you another one. The next couple years, people are going to say Shea Huayatani is the greatest baseball player we've ever seen. He's got four MVPs. He's got them unanimously. He's got two World Series wins, Ocho. He had one of the great postseason performers where he struck out 10 and hit three home runs.

56:22Shannon Sharpe:now he mess around and get another one and win another world series who we who what we who what we're gonna compare him to because we there's nobody to compare four mvps unanimously yeah that's crazy that's so you see once you start and barry barnes was so great even everybody that played against him so that is the greatest player that i've ever seen greg maddox said well it was really easy to pitch to Barry if it mattered you walked him he said his job was to get 27 outs you don't get them on him so pick the other eight guys to get and figure it out so when you look at Mocho look it's hard to say a man like Lamar and maybe you're right maybe overrated is a harsh term but I think if we they're looking they're looking at it as the 10 guys that have something that no other guys have and that is think about the NFL how long has been going on hold on stay with me real quick now so if we if we talk about hardware right and hardware hardware puts quarterbacks in a different in a different tier where we're not just great great is so are we saying like Ben Roethlisberger belongs in that tier two are we saying Russell Wilson also belongs in that tier too when we talk about quarterbacks that are the greatest because they have rings?

57:50Shannon Sharpe:No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. But here's the thing, Ocho. None of those guys have regular season MVPs. Okay. Oh, okay. There's a... So we can't move to the old post now. No, no, no, Ocho. Let me ask you a question. Has anybody ever said Ben Roethlisberger was greater than Tom Brady Peyton Manning? No. So when you look at it, you have to have regular season MVPs. Those matter. Now when you start getting postseason MVPs, that means you won the Super Bowl. You see, Brady has three regular season MVPs. He has seven Super Bowls and five Super Bowl MVPs. So no matter what criteria you use, it's going to be hard for somebody to overtake him unless my homeboy gets five MVPs.

58:50Shannon Sharpe:Let's just say for the sake of argument. We have a compelling case if my homeboy is not even 30. I think he just turned 30. He got a long way to go. Yes. He got a long way to go. And the thing, he just turned 30. So when you look at it, Ocho, I think that is the thing. They're comparing him in this elite category. Elite, which is guys that have won multiple MVPs. It ain't that many quarterbacks that's won two. What is it? Unitas, Manning, Rodgers, Brady, Favre, Montana, Young, Warner, Mahomes. It's nine. Lamar makes ten. Yeah. He's the only one that's never been to a Super Bowl. Now, if he doesn't get to a Super Bowl, what are they going to say, Ocho?

59:35Shannon Sharpe:Be honest. You know what they're going to say. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. We know what they're going to say. We know what they're going to say. But listen, I know what they're going to say, but I know my eye hasn't seen all the years I've seen him play. Let me do you one better. They say guys that got Super Bowl rings at the receiver position better than Ocho because Ocho ain't got no rings. But you run circles around them on the field. You see how they did? You see? You see how they did that? Yeah, I got you. Listen, I'm with you when you're writing. not picking up what you're putting down.

1:00:10That's all I'm saying.

1:00:11Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. So now, so just imagine, they do that for the receiver. So imagine if a quarterback and that's what I said. Oh yeah. It's even worse. It's even worse. Now, I hate that it's like that. I hate that it's like that. It's somewhat of an unwritten rule, just like the unwritten rule of hockey when it comes to fighting, just like the unwritten rule in baseball. Like, I understand it. I hate that it's like that. Hey, ring culture when it comes to talking basketball, huh? It matters. It just does. Yeah, it matters, but that's just the way it is. But, I mean, it is what it is. I think with the way, obviously, they didn't have a good year, a good start through the year.

1:00:51They still can come. Oh, you tried the Ravens. Yeah. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. I think they're going to win the division.

1:00:57Shannon Sharpe:I think they're going to get a home game. Whoa, whoa, whoa. I think they're going to win the division. I don't know about winning the division. So what do you think we're going to do? So I think you're going to do nothing. Hold on, hold on. I'll tell you what. I'll tell you what. I'm very serious tonight. I'm very serious tonight. But I'll tell you this. I will give you guys a division if we lose to the Steelers, which I doubt we do. If we lose to the Steelers, I say you guys are probably going to win the division at that point. But if we go in there and we beat the Steelers, that momentum, I'll tell you what, that momentum the rest of the season is going to be hell.

1:01:33I don't give two, you know what? Two drop the dried up pigeon, you know what on concrete. How bad are defenses? is that momentum offensively man man listen man i don't know it's gonna be tough now we if we if we lose to the steelers i mean that's it it's a wrap oh yeah for sure i mean our our season

1:01:53Shannon Sharpe:our season is over yeah and so that's that's that's the thing because you know you you look at Lamar and it's tough because in his era he got Mahomes. There are a lot of people that's going to get overlooked just like they got overlooked. Ben didn't get the credit that he deserves. Drew Brees didn't get the credit that they deserve because why? They played in the era with SmackDown, with Peyton Manning and Tom Brady. And you're talking about guys that got eight regular season MVPs and ten. No, hell not. Tom is nine. And twelve Super Bowl appearances with nine wins. Yeah. That's crazy, man. That's crazy.

1:02:47You know what's so funny, too? We've been spoiled. We've been spoiled by the Peyton Mannings and the Tom Brady's and the Patrick Mahomes and the Joe Montana and people don't understand how difficult the Aaron Rodgers, the Brent Favre, they don't understand, Brent Rodgers, all these quarterbacks and it's 32 teams. It's 32 teams and it's only a handful of quarterbacks in each hand. Almost over 30 years that are tier one quarterback. That just lets people know how difficult that position is and how special those are that are in those conversations that we're talking about. And the fact that Lamar's name is in those conversations and winning two MVPs and those unwritten rules kind of give you like a, he's not really there yet until he does this.

1:03:37So he got to get there. I'm not sure when it's going to happen, but it's going to happen before his career. Yes.

1:03:43Shannon Sharpe:My bad. Tom has 10 Super Bowl appearances. God damn. He has 10.

1:03:52Oh, that's crazy.

1:03:54Shannon Sharpe:lost to Eli twice and lost to a Nick Foles yes on the trick play the Philly special yeah the Philly special Ocho now here's the next five they had Lamar number one had Jordan Love number two Justin Herbert number three Dak Prescott number four Trevor Lawrence number five now Trevor Lawrence need to be where Lamar is I'm going to put Lamar down if you're going to put Lamar on this list I'm going to put him down at five. Right. Man, Trevor Lawrence, man, I don't think Justin Herbert's overrated. Let's see now that he has Jim Harbaugh. The one thing we know about Jim Harbaugh? Yeah.

1:04:43Shannon Sharpe:He's going to win. They're going to play out defense, and he's going to get to a Super Bowl. I'm not going to say it's going to be this year. Yeah. But he's definitely going to get there. He's getting there. And the way Justin Herbert is playing this year too, Unk, man, Justin Herbert is throwing that ball. Absolutely. Hey, hey, Quentin Johnston. It is Quentin Johnston. Quentin. Quentin Johnston. Mm-hmm. Man, Young Bull got his confidence. Playing extremely well. Ladaris McConkie. Playing extremely well. Keenan Allen. That veteran presence in that locker room playing extremely well. So there really are no.

1:05:27The second. Yeah. Now I forgot about Rondé Gass in the second. Catching hell of that ball. Being a Marion Hampton, I think he's coming back. He's coming back on the back end of the season. I think he's going to be back off injury. They're going to make a nice little run. They're going to make a nice little run.

1:05:45Shannon Sharpe:They absolutely will. Jordan Love, Jordan Love, he's going to have to get better, man. Jordan Love is going to have to be better. I don't know if somebody hasn't gotten his ear and talking about, bro, you got to push the ball down the field, man. You make too much money. You make too much money to be missing these throws. And I'm not saying you're going to make every – you're not going to make every throw. I get that. I understand. And I'm not trying to minimize playing that position because that's a position I couldn't play. Very difficult. But come on, bro. That's why they play. The more you get paid, the more expectation and a burn that is placed on you.

1:06:18Shannon Sharpe:That's just the rules of engagement. Hey, can you imagine? Can you imagine being responsible? Not only for a team, but playing the most important position on the field. The ball is in your hands the most. They paying you 50, 55 million dollars a year. Matter of fact, forget a year. They pay you 50, 55 million dollars in six months. Six months. And I need you to carry this franchise. man you talk about pressure i know it's the game of football it's what we all done since we were four years old but man man yeah but look i i'm with you ocho i believe uh lebar jackson is going to get to a super bowl and once he gets there and he wins it it's over hey get that monkey get that monkey off my back so I can go play freely, please.

1:07:14Shannon Sharpe:Thank you. You see, think about it. I'll give you a proper example. LeBron James had two MVPs, but he had never, hadn't gotten to the finals. He had two, lost two. And then all of a sudden he won and got that monkey off his back? Yeah, it was a wrap. The problem is you must rather let Lamar get the monkey off his back. He might double you up. Go back to back, Jack. Yeah. out hey i got one question too now that now that we're talking about those unwritten rules especially in these conversations when it comes to quarterbacks and mvps it was it was just on my well well it's kind of different because jaylen hurts jaylen hurts has a super bowl mvp in a ring so he's not in that conversation correct okay these are only these are only guys in the super bowl regular season mvps that have at least two regular season mvps right okay okay There are nine guys Lamar make the 10th.

1:08:12Shannon Sharpe:Lamar is the only one that hasn't appeared in the Super Bowl. Right. Okay. Think about it. Peyton Manning never went back to back. Tom, Joe, and Mahomes are the only ones to go back to back of the group. Right. Peyton didn't go to back to back Super Bowls. Yeah. Kurt didn't. Kurt went 99. We won 2000. They went in 2001. And then he went again with Arizona, I think, in, what was that, 2008? I think it was 2008. Because 2009 was New Orleans, 2000, what you call them, because seven was the Giants, eight was the Steelers, nine. Nine was, yeah, nine was New Orleans, ten was the Giants again. Yeah, 11 was the Packers.

1:09:07Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Yeah. 11 was the Packers, 12 was the Seahawks. All right. Oh, my man, I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm just, you know, just going. But like I said, Ocho, once he gets that monkey off his back, Ocho. Yeah, yeah, you're going to be fine. Ocho. And that shit hard. I'm going to let's go because we've been on this thing about 30 minutes. Ocho, because you know why it's hard? Because they say there's nothing like a game seven. Well, in the NFL, every game is a game seven. Every game, wild card game, is game seven. Divisional round, game seven. Conference final, game seven. Super Bowl, game seven.

1:09:55Shannon Sharpe:Football, you play a game seven every time you step on the field in the playoffs in football. Matter of fact, four weeks. Yes. Four weeks of game seven. Yes. And you got to muster it up and play your best football. You got to play your best football. Copenhagen spit-free pouches are packed full of American-grown tobacco. Made for welders.
