In short
Nightcap Hour 1 discusses the Ravens’ 28-6 win over the Dolphins (Lamar Jackson’s return), Dolphins’ mistakes, and then pivots to NFL trade/roster talk: Eagles’ reported interest in Myles Garrett, Colts’ surprising success with Daniel Jones, and Jonathan Taylor’s “sneak diss” toward Anthony Richardson. It also includes sports betting/personal banter.
Guests/backgrounds
Main hosts are Shannon Sharpe and Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson. Kimani Vidal is set to join later (running back/Chargers rookie). Icewear Vezo joins later (musician). No other guest identities are confirmed in this transcript.
Key claims
- Lamar Jackson looked “crisp” in his return: 18/23, 204 yards, 4 TDs, no interceptions; Ravens forced Dolphins turnovers.
- Dolphins’ issues: turnovers, execution errors (including a botched 4th-and-1 at home), and inability to elevate with Tua.
- Eagles would trade for Myles Garrett using “three first-round picks” plus a player (possibly Jordan Davis, not Carter).
- Jonathan Taylor praises Daniel Jones’s preparation, framed as a subtle shot at Anthony Richardson.
Notable examples
- Ravens TDs: Mark Andrews (2), Isaiah Kohler (1), Rashad Bateman (1).
- Colts: Daniel Jones as the biggest surprise through 8 weeks; Taylor notes Jones’s early playbook mastery.

3:47Shannon Sharpe:Hello, ladies and gentlemen, and thank you for joining us for another episode of Nightcap. As you watch the Baltimore Ravens run their record to three and five with a 28-6 victory. Over the Miami Guppies, who fall to 2-7. No one should be surprised by this, given how well Lamar Jackson has played against the Dolphins. Why would you pick against them with him in the starting lineup playing that team? But nevertheless, my partner did pick the Guppies, and he's wrong again. Y 'all know who I am. I'm your favorite uncle, Shannon Sharp, and he is my partner and co-host. He's Liberty City's own, Bengals Ring of Fame honoree, Madding Radius Adjuster, a former Pro Bowler and an All-Pro.

Make sure you go check out my media company on all of his platforms, SheShe Media, and my clothing company, 84. With 84 being spelled out, that link is pinned in the chat. We have Kamani Vidal joining us and Icewear Vezo joining us a little later today. A little later tonight, excuse me. But the game that you just watched, Lamar Jackson threw for four touchdowns.
5:42Shannon Sharpe:Three went to tight ends. Mark Andrews caught two. Kohler caught another one and then he found scrambled and found Rashad Bateman on another touchdown Derrick Henry, 19 rushes 119 yards back to being the Derrick Henry that we all know and love, but I thought Lamar Jackson in four weeks, five weeks of his absence he came back and threw the ball really really well tonight, 18 of 23 204 yards, four touchdowns no interceptions, he was sacked two times, but the Ravens didn't turn the ball over and they forced the Dolphins to turn it over. And when you have a situation like that, a team like Baltimore, you cannot turn the ball over against them and give them short fields because bad things are going to happen with that quarterback and that running back.
6:26Shannon Sharpe:And I thought overall as a team, Ocho, I thought they played really well, but I thought Lamar Jackson was really crisp in his return. Yeah, the fact that he was able to miss as many games as he did, to come back and look like he never missed a beat. He was efficient in the pocket, extending plays, you know, hitting tight ends. The play calling was really well. was really good. I was curious to see when he had to scramble, when he had to move and make sudden movements and be twitchy, would it affect him? Would he still be? He wasn't trying to do that, don't you? He wasn't trying to do no twitchy.
6:58Shannon Sharpe:Because there were some times he could have scrambled up the middle. He was like, nah, I'm good. He was chilling, but you can tell he was comfortable. When he did have to take off and run, he was able to do so. That lets me know his hand finger is good. They have, what, almost 10 days off where he can rep and get himself back fully healthy all the way to 100%. But you got to understand that 85%, 90 % Lamar Jackson is still very, very, very good quarterback, still top three in the NFL right now. Outside of that, I'm upset. And I have to stop doing this chat. And this is for y 'all. I just want to apologize to all the Ravens fans that are in the chat.
7:35I have to do something. I have to stop betting with my heart. I have to stop betting with my heart. I have to start using my mind. and understanding where teams are. Now, I was fooled by last week's performance by the Dolphins and thinking that momentum would carry on into this week was why I was so high in regard to thinking that they would win this game with Lamar Jackson coming back, even though it was his first game, even though he's played well against the Dolphins. No, he's played great.
8:09Shannon Sharpe:No other quarterback has ever played this well against an opponent like he's played. Yes, but I'm saying, but he had missed games, so I thought he'd been maybe a little rusty. Maybe the play call wouldn't have been as efficient as he looked at night. Maybe the running game might not have been good. We haven't seen Derek Curry run the ball like this tonight as of the date yet, you know, this season. So I thought, you know, the chances might have been in the Dolphins' favor. If they can perform, not turn the ball over, and Tua can be the Tua he was when they played Atlanta Falcons last week. But, you know, in the words of a very good friend of mine, sweet Jesus, my dog, Brother McKinney, I just don't know what else to do.
8:51And then from now on, for the rest of the season, I will be betting with common sense and choosing teams that I like, that I like, and know we're going to win the game, no matter what.
9:02Shannon Sharpe:You don't know, but you know the Guppies weren't going to win. You out there betting on Twitter, making us look bad. Well, technically, it's my team, huh? And when your Ravens play, well, they're not your Ravens. You was on there for two weeks.
9:17But when your Broncos play,
9:22that's your team, and you bet with them regardless of who they're playing. When my Bengals play, I bet with them regardless of who I'm playing. When the Dolphins play, stay with me a little bit. When the Dolphins play, people need to understand. I am from Miami. I was born in Dade County. I've come from a beautiful place. It's like the Caribbean. It's called Liberty City. I grew up in the 40s all my life. Born in 1968 at Jackson Memorial Hospital. That is where my love for the Dolphins come from because that's all I knew growing up as a child. So I still try to have that same allegiance towards...
9:59Shannon Sharpe:Unlearn it. Huh? Unlearn it. I know, it's hard, though. It's hard. I didn't pick that up from Dick's I didn't order that from NFL shop.com I'm a Raven You played there for Two years Two years Won five playoff games Is that good? It's alright Y 'all won five playoff games because it's defense Not the offense Y 'all won five playoff games I tell you what. I didn't get, I didn't win the Super Bowl MVP, but I guarantee you my ring got just as many diamonds as Ray Lewis's. I guarantee you. I got a ring too. My jersey number 82 got a Super Bowl pass that says Super Bowl XXX New Armand Numa 5B, which means Super Bowl 35.
10:59Shannon Sharpe:So I don't know what you're talking. Listen, the card you was dealt, that was for you. The cards I was there, I wasn't able to go to no Super Bowl. I wasn't able to host no trophy. I wasn't able to get no ring. I did all I could to get there. You know? Go ahead. Carry on. That's all I could do to get there, you know? In the words of my good brother on Instagram, Jay McKinney, on Sweet Jesus, I did my job, the best of my ability. It's a team game. I think I held up my end of the bargain. You hear me? Yeah, I think I held up my end of the bargain. You putting that up there like that's the real thing.
11:39Whoa, whoa, whoa. Ocho. Ocho.
11:43Shannon Sharpe:Ocho. It could be whatever. I got it. Hold on. You ain't the only one got trophies. Hold on.
11:52Hey, let me tell you. You ain't the only one got trophies. I might not have been able to get a trophy on the field, but I'm getting them off the field. Huh? What you saying? What you trying to do? i mean hello what you trying to do
12:11i mean hey hey talk talk nice to me now talk talk nice to me hey hey hey i'm some of the mine too now no no hey hey somebody somebody's mine over there too now hey hey you got yours Hey, chat y 'all see my trophies and you see my plaques you see my plaques
12:35Shannon Sharpe:Hey, chat y 'all see my plaques and my nightcap sign Hey, well all these springs on yo they think i hijacked the 18 wheeler with all these springs I got you see all these springs man like i hijacked the 18 wheeler Time out, time out, time out. Time out. Come on, man. How you got all the goddamn awards, man? Wow, wow. Time out, time out. I only got two awards, man. What you mean how I got all these awards? Huh? How do you get awards? You win them. Yeah, but when you gonna send me my stuff? You got yours. You got like 32 awards, and I got two.
13:15Shannon Sharpe:Well, go find the ones you had last year. The one you took off stage. I don't know what happened to her. You know what I'm... Hey, man. What? Hey, can you hear me? Yeah. Man, sis took them, man. She ain't gonna give me them back. Oh, I don't know what you want me to do. Send me some of them. We don't replace awards. Hey. Hey, let me tell you something. Let me tell you what I just bought. You know what I got out there, right? You hear me? What you got? For Saturday's show. We have Saturday's show. I got some floating shells that's gonna go right under the plaques i got like yeah i got four floating shells right and i got them staggered a little bit so i could put all my trophies on hey so hey you see that i need i need i need i need that naacp i need i need i need two of them you hear me goodness gracious the capers where the cash at what a stash hey um i would i would like to i would like to decorate my game room so i can be professional because you have you have all the awards i thought this was a team effort this was this was done too it was two people that did this well she took all your awards bomb back hold on hey see i need where's that right there you got you got two of these where they at in the mail i want to i want to put them up today i want to put them up tomorrow they won't be here tomorrow uh the good thing i got good news like i got bad news the good news is you got two of these coming the bad news i got four of them coming

15:23Shannon Sharpe:well i don't know what you want me to tell you ocho man look at all these bring hey look like there's an AT Wheeler. If y 'all see an AT Wheeler side the road where they ain't got no springs on it, there he go right there. Hey, I just I want to thank God for giving me the opportunity. After going What about your gut? What about your gut? We look good the first quarter. I thought it was going to be a good game. Honestly, we moved. I know it's a four quarter game. I'm saying the fact that we moved the ball up and down the field we got in the red zone maybe four maybe five times We were only able to get three points out of that and I'm like I just I just don't know Didn't have enough playmakers.
16:08We had both Washington's we had Taj Emily No turn them all over and give the ball back to the rate the way y 'all was moving
16:15Shannon Sharpe:It look like y 'all had George out there to Washington that is Yeah, it was bad And obviously when you plan a team when you plan a team like the Baltimore Ravens on you got to be as perfect as possible You got to minimize the turnovers because all you're doing is hurting yourself. And I heard a great quote while I was watching the game where Mike McDaniel said, you know, you don't want to have to play the Ravens and have to play against yourself. You know, we have to play against yourself as well, making mistakes. And listen, the Ravens hop on everything. They capitalize on it. And, you know, the end score to the game, a result of, you know, just shooting yourself in the foot by the Dolphins.
16:52Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. Damn, man. Put the bag in the chair. I'll put him back in the interview. You just put him back in my picture. Damn. Man, they're going to take me all back. Keep talking though, Joe. Anyway, Chad, I mean, like, and I'm sure we have a lot of Raven fans in the chat. You know, I meant no ill will, no harm. He meant ill will? I'm just going for my team. I'm going for my home team. And I hope y 'all accept my apology. I love you. I love you. You know, on Sweet Beans. You know how I feel about you. You know, and that's pretty much it. And on the next week. On the next week. That's how I'm feeling.
17:36Ravens, flop. Matter of fact, I got to apologize. I got to eat butter. Bengals and guppies, flop. Ravens, flop. Guppies and bingles, flop. I got to apologize to Butter, too. But I know you're going to see this, Butter. You know, I was all on your Twitter. 18:38Shannon Sharpe:i mean i was shooting me a little i was shooting a little hundred dollars I've been trying to get my little shoot you shoot me my little fidget now hunter for the longest hey, uh Hey, can I tell you something real quick? I'm going to be rude and I don't mean to be disrespectful Well, you understand the economy that we in right now, right? I mean it too. Can you imagine what I can do if it I heard it just got for sake I mean you understand they already don't cut my snap benefits they cut my wick bill the fence. Medicaid, they about to do that. 19:33Shannon Sharpe:boy he's short you gotta tell me nothing well it's rough out here right now bro i mean i used to get i used to get hey before i go into barber shop man that creed come on i mean i get like three of them for like 200 that's a good deal what you know i know it's a great thing he goes yeah uh uh uh that uh that tom for that tom for a bottle of cologne they call about seven hundred dollars man sharp you good with me you always hey sometimes i would just buy stuff and didn't even want it hey man hey i'm gonna do your solid i'm gonna give you this right here hey time's hard i can show you that 5900 listen if i seen you 5900 it's gonna set me back a little bit well if it sets you back that means i get to move forward that's what happens sometimes Ocho, sometimes you got to plant a tree and realize the shade you not going to be able to enjoy from that tree.
20:30But you got to understand that. You know, I got kids. I got to take care of that. You heard me? Me too. Your kid's grown. You know, mine little. You know, hey. They still eat. They still need daddy love, care, and money. Think about little french fried cha-cha and candy.

21:31I don't know if it's five, six for best actor. 150 % this kid Jafar Jackson should absolutely positively get nominated for his portrayal as Michael Jackson. 23:57Here's something that should not be as complicated as it is. Getting a racist statue removed. And here's something that should be a whole lot easier than it is. Getting a new one put up in its place. As long as there's a politics of race in America, there's going to be a politics of remembering the Civil War.
24:13Shannon Sharpe:To get to school, I had to go down Robert E. Lee Boulevard. To get to the grocery store, I had to go down Jefferson Davis Parkway. If you're a historian and you leave out half of what the history is, you're not doing your job. I'm Akilah Hughes, and Rebel Spirit Season 2 goes deep on both of those things. 26:39Shannon Sharpe:And a tight end, a six foot two, 185 pounds senior. Shannon Sharp. Hey, man, golly, man. Just a just think about a nothing. You know, back to the game. No, just think about that. what like I like I don't understand the NFL man how you can come what don't you understand maybe I can help you how you can have the Dolphins come off such a great a great dominating performance you know 30 to 9 against the Atlanta Falcons the Atlanta are a team they're a good team and for two to look that way the defense to play well offensively they were able to move the ball they were to put up points something that they struggled to do and then they come out tonight and lay a You know the first quarter like oh yes.
27:23Oh, this is going to be a game and I'm like, you know, what the hell? Oh
27:28Shannon Sharpe:See Let me ask you a question If you hadn't seen it let's just say okay Fact we're not gonna look at anything in the back because if you look at it a vacuum you just look at Atlanta you said okay But what about prior to Atlanta? So if we had taken Atlanta out of the equation and we looked at everything that they had done up until Atlanta Skip over Atlanta. What would you say? They were definitely I'm just gonna be honest with you and I was I was bent with my heart But I bet my with my heart with confidence based on that performance last week I'm like, oh ain't no way in hell is bad as as bad as the Raven defense has been this year Ain't no hell if you need the Dolphins I'm talking but you're making me think the Dolphins got the Chiefs offense or the Lions offense or or or or or Philly or Buffalo or somebody they not known for no I mean I know what you mean they can move the ball though they did it tonight they were able to move the ball they were able to move the ball and be efficient run the ball when they need to Devon A-chan catching out the backfield he's a dude oh yeah yeah yeah he's just like I don't know man truth be told he that best player I know two of the quarterback, A-Chan is their best player.
28:43Shannon Sharpe:You think so? It just, I mean, yeah, he's small. I get he's small, Locho, but he can catch it. He can run it. He can run between the tackles. He got crazy speed that if he hit a seam, he can hit his head on the goalpost. He's a solid receiver out of the backfield. He has more speed than Kamara and Christian McCaffrey, but he's every bit elusive and you can blind him up out wide. You can put him in the slot and he gets his hand on the ball. Boy, Hey, he'll threat to go the whole way. It's just that, you know, I just don't know how far you can go with Tua. I just don't. They make dumb mistakes. They got it.
29:21Shannon Sharpe:They got it fourth and one and they bought to go for it. And the right tackle gets a procedure. I'm like, bro, what, what are you doing? We kill it. Now you got to kick a field goal. Everybody, everybody was yelling. Mike McDaniel was yelling at him coming out the field, and rightfully so. I just don't get it, bro. You home. You are home. It's not like you're on the road and it's crowd noise. You're home. You know the snap count. It's just stuff like that. They've got to do it. They're going to have to tear this thing down and build it back up, Ocho. Whoa, whoa. They got some pieces. I'm not so sure Phillips or everybody could use a Phillips or Bradley Chubb.
30:07Shannon Sharpe:People don't, you know, try to take people. You might as well just sell off and then try to get stuff and then go into the draft and build this thing. Another thing, now that you mentioned the fact that they're tearing it down and building it back up, you've been right about every coach that was probably going to lose their job. You've been right about every coach that might be on the hot seat and they're going to get fired. You can write about every player that you said was going to get paid. They got paid. Oh Hutchinson we're going to talk about Hutch in a minute Are you saying Mike McDaniels Will he make it throughout the entire season Or if they continue to lose Will they let him go I'm trying to think I know John Emery Is the tight ends coach He's been a head coach in this league He comes from that Shanahan tree So I'm not surprised that he's on the staff With Mike McDaniel He's been a head coach I think he was at Colorado Which is his alma mater Weaver is the defensive coordinator.
31:01Shannon Sharpe:I don't think he's ever held a head coaching position.
31:07I think it's 50-50 that he leaves before the season.
31:12Shannon Sharpe:Ain't no question in my mind he's going after the season. No question whatsoever. And I think the thing is, Ochoa, is that you start selling, you know, you just start selling pieces off because it's not going to work in its current condition. In his current condition, the Dolphins are not equipped. They don't have enough. The quarterback, he can't elevate. You have to elevate him. And when A-Chan is running wild, when Tyreek was healthy and going crazy, when Waddle was going crazy, Tua looked really, really good. But he doesn't possess the skill set to elevate other people. Like I said, okay, he was good, but he made him better.
31:51Shannon Sharpe:That's not what he did. That's not what happened. Think about what you just said. you said two is not the kind of quarterback that can elevate his play when he doesn't have the type of talent around him that can elevate his oh well how many quarterbacks in the nfl are like that it's maybe four or five that elevate the ones that make 50 million should be able to do that hold on auto mac mcdaniel is firmly up in the airport in rapapur on the hot seat as they say i do not sense anything imminent from owner stephen ross who likes him believes in him and has invested in him but here's how mcdaniel is going to be judged how do the players respond what is it like in the locker room do they keep playing for him or do they not uh and can't you see it there's going to be determined that's going to determine whether he keeps his job i just don't see it even even if they play hard ocho i don't see how i coach you missed the playoffs last year you go and they got two games so there's nine games so they got eight games left let's just say for the sake of argument, they go four and four in those games, Ocho.
32:56Shannon Sharpe:That's six wins. That's six and eleven after the season that you had last year. Do you factor in the injuries? The loss of Tyreek? Do you factor in that? No? Yeah, there are a lot of teams that got injuries. Injuries are a part of it. The good teams overcome those injuries. You remember Rasheed Rice went down last year? Mahomes ain't make no excuse. Tyreek leaves. He ain't make no excuse. What you call them go out? A.J. Brown is out. Jalen Hurst doesn't make any excuse. Dak was playing without CD. He didn't make any excuse. I get it. But injuries are a part of this, and you factor those in, so that's why you try to do the best job you can of fielding a 53-man team.
33:47Shannon Sharpe:You just don't look at it, okay, well, he's going to start, but you also have to look at what happens if he goes down. Will we be able to keep this thing afloat two weeks, three weeks, four weeks? That's the end. I'm talking about your wide receiver, running back, quarterback, something like that. Hey, hell, I think Greer's on the hot seat too. You got rid of Brian Flores. You hired Josh McDaniels. Josh McDaniels, excuse me, Mike McDaniel. Mike McDaniel, excuse me, Chad. I mean, Ocho, I don't know if you know this, they're not close to Buffalo. They're not close to New England. Think about it.
34:29Shannon Sharpe:Josh Allen got another decade. Drake may got a decade plus. How close are you to them? You fighting with the Jets to try to stay out of last place, to try to stay out of the seventh. you ask because you're not close to buffalo and you're not close to new england when you ask how close we are to buffalo how close we are to the winger most people that understand the game of football they say that you're we're a quarterback away we yeah back away but here's the thing ocho you got a quarterback that you gave 250 million dollars to i mean actually actually you had no choice because there were no other options i i agree 100 but what's the likelihood of now you have to go in the draft but you're gonna have to find one develop him because you're not gonna get one in free agency ain't nobody letting no i mean i'm trying to think who uh anthony richardson i'm no you're not going that route so i'm trying to think who you could get in free agency what quarterback is going to be available in free agency.
35:40Shannon Sharpe:You want first cousins? Whoa. Whoa. Hold on, man. You just put a smile on my face a little bit, man. He can't move, Ocho. He was already a statue. He can move less now. Listen, I know one thing I know what he can do. I know he can deliver that ball like Amazon. I know he can deliver that ball like FedEx and UPS. now but anytime but anytime it's inclement weather what happens my package ain't there when it said it wouldn't be that like yeah that's that's what you just said just there has been hunting the dolphin since since the 80s and one more thing you got to realize cousins for the last decade plus has been indoor weather where do they play at in buffalo is that indoor it's cold what about new england it get a little chilly what about what about new york yeah it gets a little chilly so are you sure you want to be a guy that's getting on up in age that didn't have the ability to move before can move even less now is that what you wanted to help
36:54Shannon Sharpe:ah you're probably you're probably better off ocho if i'm gonna scrap it i'm going i'm going bare bones and build it back up. Listen, going bare bones and building it back up, based on what I've seen so far that's out there, the options, the answer ain't out there. We walk college football. The answer ain't out there. If they can't elevate their teams and stand out and pop out on film and pop out on tape right now, they're not going to do it there because they don't have the weapons or the right situation offensively for it to happen. You can plug somebody in there and they can just go. you got you got to be him to go play in that offense and make a difference yes but look you had an opportunity the first two years you had a healthy reek and for the most part waddle you had a chain you stumbled on a chance and you didn't get it done you later you you started faltering down the stretch and that's what happened so you started faltering down the stretch and then you mess around and you have to go to Kansas City knowing what they represent, knowing what that place is like to play in the playoffs and it's 10 below zero.
38:05Shannon Sharpe:It was cold, bro. It was cold. I mean, so cold, the Greyhound got inside the bus. He was on the bus, Ochoa Drive. It was cold. Shit, I'm getting one of these seats. My man, they got to Ochoa. And I know it's hot and I know Dolphins fans like that. They got the longest tenure without winning a playoff game. 24 seasons. Yeah. 24 seasons. 24. That's crazy. I just don't see it. I just don't see it. This is Michael Rappaport and my podcast, the I Am Rappaport Stereo Podcast, is unlike anyone you've ever heard. 43:00Shannon Sharpe:uh-oh Ocho the Eagles are reportedly interested in a potential blockbuster trade involving star pass rusher Miles Garrett according to Yahoo Sports Charles Robinson I've heard it from a couple of other super high-ranking people in other teams that are clearly on the phones that Howie Roseman and the Eagles are super hot at the Miles Garrett that Howie Roseman would give up like three first-round picks and a player. You know what? I think they'd probably be willing to give up three first-round picks and probably Jordan Davis or one of those young players. I don't think they'd be willing to give up Carter, but I think they'd be willing to give up Davis.
43:44Shannon Sharpe:But it's going to take three first-round picks. Absolutely, and it's damn well worth it. One thing about how he rolls on, if you watch the way he maneuvers, the way he conducts business when it comes to getting players and building a team building a roster you know and obviously right now the main thing is the main thing with the philadelphia eagles despite what everybody's talking about they trying to go back and repeat on they're trying to go back and repeat and goddamn howie rosemans is pushing all his chips in on the table i know what i need i know a piece can help us and that's going to get yeah goddamn what happened what happened if with that trade through three first round picks and a player what if they want aj brown in exchange hey they want you can have him what what yes because the way i look at it if i get him and i'm and i'm the philadelphia eagles that i believe i can beat where are we gonna be picking the bottom half you're gonna get somewhere between 28 and 32 we're not gonna be in the top 10 so it's not gonna hurt us.
44:47Shannon Sharpe:It's not gonna hurt us. See, now, you mess around and you pick it in the top 10 a la Chicago. Who's that? No, Carolina. Remember Carolina? One of the first pick and the next year, boom. That pick that you gave up is Caleb Williams. Yeah, and honestly, me, just thinking about it, the only thing that makes sense, okay, you giving us three first round picks and we need something of equal value if we're letting up but I wouldn't give up both though Ocho I would give up three first round picks you don't get AJ and Carter or AJ and you can get AJ you know what I might be willing to give up Carter and keep Jordan Davis no no absolutely not I'm going the opposite way and it might not be anybody defensively with all the smoke with all the talking they might let sticks go because I think that's the value who Devontae?
45:56I say sticks I mean I'm 11 oh
46:00Shannon Sharpe:yeah AJ yeah yeah I can see that but I think Ocho Carter hadn't been the same player in the injuries he wasn't in shape like he was supposed to See, teams factor that in. Ocho, your kid's 24. So if he's not in shape at 24, what makes me think he's going to be in shape at 26, 27, 28? And now, Ocho, I got to put a big contract on the table. Now he's going to want 30, 32, 33, 34 million. Am I willing? Is that someone I can trust to invest that kind of money in? I already know what I'm going to get with Miles Garrett. I'm cool with that. I already know. So, Miles Garrett's going to play like he's broke, and he's one of the highest-played defensive players in football.
46:46Shannon Sharpe:So, I'm not ever worried about him being in shape. Now, I've got to worry about him speeding a little bit. Hey, damn, Miles, slow it down. Damn, bro. But, hey, I'm sure they've had – I think Andrew Barry has had a conversation with him. I think he's got like six speeding tickets, a couple of them excessive, 100 miles an hour. That's something that he needs to work on. But I don't have to worry about him when it comes to being in condition and being him playing hard. I don't have to light a fire up on it. Ocho, if I pay you that kind of money, Ocho, I don't need to give you no pep talk. I don't need to say, come on, son, we need it today.
47:21Shannon Sharpe:What? I need you to say, hey, son, I don't need you. You can't practice today. Because I don't want you to hurt nobody. That's how it should be. Look, all we can go by is Ocho. by body language, what's being said. Something is going on that AJ doesn't seem happy. He doesn't feel like he's getting the targets. Because he's looking at Uno up in Cincinnati. That man got 42 targets. I haven't got 42 targets all year. This man got 42 targets in two games. It's different. He's looking at Puka. He's looking at Jetta. He's looking at all these guys, and he says, I'm a number one. and I see number ones, they get their targets.
48:11Shannon Sharpe:They get seven, eight, ten targets a game. I get three or four, and I'm supposed to be okay with that. Yeah, but you're supposed to be okay with that when you're winning, and that's what everybody says. But you got to be careful what you wish for, Hunter, because you got to think about the situation. The trade deadline ends what, the 4th? November 4th, so Tuesday. Tuesday at 4 o 'clock Eastern. You got to be careful what you wish for because you're coming from a perfect situation. And what happens if you end up in Cleveland? Ooh. Because there's inconsistent play at the quarterback position. Yeah.
48:50I think if you put A.J. Brown in that system, now I think they will put you in position to be able to get 42 goddamn catches a game.
49:00Shannon Sharpe:But who can get it to him? You trust it. You trust it. No, no, no, no, no, no. It takes a veteran quarterback to target somebody 23 times. And the guy caught – what did he catch, like 16 of them? He got targeted, what, 19 times. He caught 12 of them. Everybody doesn't know how to do that.
49:25Shannon Sharpe:But the thing that I love most about the Eagles, and I love this about the Lions also, is that not only are they developing players, they're not afraid to go get somebody that they feel that can really help them get to that. You see, you look at – where is – oh, we're going to talk about it a little later. I'll touch on it right now. You look at Detroit. They say, man, we need – look, Matthew Stafford, he wants to go. Okay, we'll make a trade. Okay, Rams. Give us two first-rounders and Jerry Goff. Now they go get Pene Sul. They get Jameer Gibbs. Now they get J-Mo. They get Almond Ross, St. Brown.
50:07Shannon Sharpe:They get Aiden Hutchinson. And guess what they've done, Ocho? We drafted them. We developed them. We paid them. Look at the money that they paid all these guys. You see four years, 212. Four years, 180. Four years, 120. Four years, 112. Four years, 93. You see a real current thing? Guys know now, if I come here and I work my butt off, I'm going to get paid. ain't no dilly dally around ain't playing no mind games and the buck stops with me on my desk and don't nobody get this and that ain't about no egos break kudos to brad holmes the general manager and also kudos to him for drafting too for drafting well because brad holmes that's how you draft players and hope they pan out and they actually don't pan out but it's like everyone they drafted today it always just seemed to pan out which is why they've been able to pay players and develop them and they get the money that they get.
51:04Shannon Sharpe:Kirby Joseph? Yeah, they drafted really well, man. You know, I mean, they've done a great job. You look at that D-line, you look at those linebackers, Campbell, and you look at what's the big D-lineman that just came back. They've done a great job of identifying a player that fits their system. You know, Coach Belichick used to take a lot of criticism for guys like, who is this guy? But Coach Belichick knew what he was looking for. He was looking for two-gap defensive linemen. you're not going to get no sacks. Remember Chris Long left. He said, yeah, it's fun to win, but I want to be a player.
51:35Shannon Sharpe:I just don't want to hold up so the linebackers can make plays. My job as a defensive, as an edge rusher, excuse me, Chad, I want to hunt the quarterback. I don't want to just sit on the porch and bark. Let me hunt. And so you identify the player that's going to fit the system, a player that personality-wise will fit your system. Because it don't do any good if the guy fits the system, but he's a jackass. You have to identify that. You identify that. You do your homework. Now, you're going to miss some because sometimes guys can fool you. Absolutely. But I just love what they do. Through the first eight weeks of the season, the Colts and Daniel Jones have been the biggest surprise.
52:18Shannon Sharpe:When Andy signed Jones this offseason, he was widely viewed as another option behind 2023 number four pick, Anthony Richardson. But Jonathan Taylor realized the job with Jones after the first practice. When he first got into training camp and he called check, that's in the playbook. But if you've been here, one of those checks that's like, oh yeah, we call that sometimes. The fact that he called is like, did this guy have the playbook six months ago? That's when I understood. Oh, okay, his level of preparation is different. For him to come in day one, day two, and make that call, make that check, he's been studying.
52:53Shannon Sharpe:is day one of install and he's already that far ahead. I'm like, this guy is legit. Yes, sir. I don't know how, I'm going to ask you. I know how I took that. I know how I took that. He didn't say it. He heaping praise, but that was a, I think that was a shot at the, go ahead, but you go ahead. What you think? I think players don't intend to take shots at other individuals that play the same position when praising another. I think he's just praising the fact that Daniel Jones was so well-informed with the offense to have already been there. To know it the way, to know it, the ins and outs and the nuances of it after just getting there, it's like, well, golly.
53:44We also have to understand what Daniel Jones is fighting for. he's fighting for a job an opportunity to start after leaving somewhere it just didn't work and maybe this could have been a good thing for Anthony Richardson to see okay now I have a better understanding of what I need to do the way to conduct myself not only as a pro but as quarterback number one well of quarterback number one of a team this is the stuff I needed to do make sure I succeeded not just in the classroom not just in practice but the results of doing so and putting the work in is going to show up on Sundays where it mattered most.
54:25Shannon Sharpe:I don't think Jonathan Taylor was intentionally trying to take a swipe at Anthony Richardson. He was heaping praise, but in the process of heaping praise, people are going to look like, well, damn, he just got there a month ago and you got a quarterback that's been there for two years and he never did anything like this? And he had the playbook. So, that's the thing, though, Ocho. No, was he out there trying to say, well, hey, we've heard a story. He was the last in, the first out. They benched it for a reason. But that's what, I mean, the quarterback, the preparation has to be so intense. And a lot of times, that's why they go ahead and get mad because they're like, I can't be out there.
55:10Shannon Sharpe:I need to be home. I need to be in front of this projector. and I need an iPad, not Ocho, and I need to be going through and I need my mind focused on, I need home. And so they're going over and over and over and over. I told you from day one, once I saw what he was getting paid, I said, well, he's going to be the starter. He ain't going to be the starter, Ocho. I'm not even sure when I saw that too. Obviously, it's just having common sense and understanding the game, understanding the business at that. Yep. Damn, they brought back quarterback competition. And the thing was, Ocho. What? What I didn't understand, if you got a project, okay, somebody say you got a project car or you got a project home.
55:51Shannon Sharpe:Oh, so you don't try to drive the car. You say you got to fix something. You got a project. It's going to take work. It's going to take you six months. It's going to take you a year to get it operational. You got a project home. You're like, oh, man, I got this home. I bought this home, but I'm going to fix it up. You don't try to live in it. You said this guy was a project. He had immense talent, and he does. And you start him? what changed just go back and look at his tape from high school look at his tape from college and you tell me this man should have been a starter from day one no Ocho no you did him a huge disservice
56:36Shannon Sharpe:can he go somewhere he needs to go get with someone to understand mechanics of throwing everything. You can't be throwing the football like you're trying to throw it through a hurricane because nothing has touch. Everything is 100 miles an hour. Shallow cross is throwing it like he's throwing a far cross or deep over. No, bro. Look, give Daniel Jones credit. He's come in and like you said, the situation didn't work out in New York. He had to sit the bench in Minnesota but he got an opportunity and he says if I get another opportunity you gotta take advantage of it you're not gonna get too many not to be a starter not to be a starter not to say okay this is my team I have nothing to worry about you don't get too many of them chances especially coming from New York shoot if you can't get it done in New York which is obviously what I would consider one of the biggest markets maybe the biggest market if you can deal with that media you can deal with anything do it in it's just like you know Trey Lance he was a project he played I forgot about Trey I just I don't get it where's Trey Lance at as a backup huh is he in Dallas still or Houston
58:04Shannon Sharpe:cause I know he was oh no the Chargers he's on the Chargers Okay. Because he played, basically he played all the preseason, the Chargers.
58:19Shannon Sharpe:Carl Banks, who's the radio analyst for the Giants, was extremely critical this week of Dexter Lawrence on his podcast with Bob Papa. Pop! Dexter Lawrence, nobody respects you anymore. Nobody, Banks said before going in on to say Lawrence wasn't playing at the same level as previous seasons. Lawrence strongly disagree with Banks' assessment, citing at the rate in which he gets double-teamed. Those are strong words. That's how you feel? F it. He's delusional. Lawrence is getting double-teamed, a league-high 75 % of the pass rate, 75 % of the rate on his pass rush opportunities. Yeah. Joe, I know Banks.
59:00Shannon Sharpe:I played against Banks. Obviously, he's older than me, but I played against Banks. I think he was still at the Giants. I know I played against him when he was at Cleveland because when Coach Belichick went to Cleveland, he took Banks with him. Banks was originally one of the Giants. Him, it was him, Pep, Harry Carson, and LT. So that's why I know him for him. So I know Banks. Yeah. What do you think, Ochoa, when analysts come out, played the game, he played the game at a high level. I think one year Banks was the first team all pro. As a matter of fact, I think he beat an LT that year. He was the first team All-Pro.
59:41What do you say when guys are critical?
59:45Shannon Sharpe:I mean, this is his opinion, that he doesn't believe that Dexter is playing at the level in which he's played in years past and playing at a level in which he got the big contract that the Giants given him, which he earned. I mean, honestly, you got three defensive tackles in the NFL that are considered the best right now. Chris Jones is one of them. Yeah. Jefferson Simmons is another. And that third is, in no particular order, and the third is Dexter Lawrence. Now, I'm not sure who Mr. Banks is watching when it comes to football, especially the New York Giants. I'm sure he probably watches all the Giants game, being that he has a podcast.
1:00:29Yeah, he's endless.
1:00:30Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, yeah. He and Bob Papa, yeah. Being that he has a podcast that he's doing with Big Papa. but you can see and understand that they scheme ways to stop Dexter Lawrence. Every play first down it's going to be a double team. Second down it's going to be a double team. So you understand how difficult it is for him to have the efficiency that Carl Banks is looking for. Saying that nobody's scared of him anymore. If they weren't scared of him anymore they wouldn't be double teaming. Let me ask you a question. One on one. Let me ask you a question. How many times you think AD got double? Now we talk about two totally different dogs.
1:01:13We talk about two totally different dogs.
1:01:16Shannon Sharpe:You and I both know when you become that guy, you can't give excuses. You can't say, hey, man, get up with all your money. They doubling me. We pay you to beat them. You've been in them trenches, right? Yeah. You know what it's like dying at. Now, I know I play around a lot. I don't be down there but I know what them strong joggers can do and I know what it's like and having to take on two of that every time no matter how strong you are I gotta deal with two of me
1:01:51Shannon Sharpe:what we do Ocho is that we don't do it every time but we do it enough that when we don't do it you're anticipating it so you hesitate and that's all I need he who hesitated beat So that's all I need to do, Ocho. I'm going to double your ass enough that now when I don't double, you're anticipating the double to come. What do they do to receivers that used to get in the ball? What I'm going to do is double you early on. I'm going to get you frustrated. I ain't going to double you the whole game. I just want to do it just the first quarter, get you frustrated. Then I got you. Damn. So, look, I get it.
1:02:32Shannon Sharpe:I think when you're losing, okay, what's going on? Why aren't we winning? Because I think you look at it. They got Law. They got Thibodeau. They got Carter. They got Brian Burns. Ain't no reason. You give up 33 points in the fourth quarter, I don't give a damn what you say. Nice squad. They got a nice squad of names, huh? They got a nice squad of names. Man, Brian, what's his name? Brian Burns. been to the Pro Bowl. Des DeLarge was an all-pro. Boy, nice. Thibodeau. Kayvon. They got guys that can – now, their back end leaves a lot to be desired, okay. Because if they don't get there, it's going to be a completion.
1:03:14Shannon Sharpe:Absolutely.
1:03:19Shannon Sharpe:He said he's been double. But it's hard, Ocho. I mean, people like you, people talking. And the thing is, Banks knows football. Banks studies the game. He's a student of the game. This ain't on anybody. No, no, no. No, it's not. It's absolutely not. All I can tell Dex, hey, just keep plugging, bro. Just keep plugging away. That's all you can do. That goddamn double team, what a thing here, bro. It is. I mean, you gotta realize, they got 600 pounds rooting your ass up out of there. You know, he under, he's shade, Nose. Hey, bro, you got the center and the guard. Oh, they're going to get your ass up out of there.
1:04:05That's tough. And it's so funny. Speaking of that, and watching Aaron Donald and some of the clips with him and his ability to get off so fast and make himself skinny to where he's only dealing with one man out of the double team. That's crazy. In every blue moon, you'll see him. He'll grab one in the middle of the chest with one hand and had the other one in the middle of the chest with the other hand. And he looking. He controlling everything. I'm like, how the hell is he doing all that?
1:04:38Shannon Sharpe:A lot of times you have to be able to feel the double team. You see how the guy, if he trying to reach me, they trying to scoop me or they sip it. They trying to power, they trying to combo block me. But that's instinct. That's years and years of playing that double team and understanding. it because you know like you said hey you gotta make a pile but he was so good at playing on the edge so he's not and the same thing i tell tight end bro don't let that man square you up you give him a side you give him a side don't let him put don't let him put his hands in your breastplate oh it's a wrap you're not going nowhere and don't let him be strong you definitely Yeah.
1:05:24Shannon Sharpe:You better be able to whack. And that's what the good D tackles. Look at Aaron Donald Rush. You see he's doing like a wide receiver or tight end. He's up there doing this. Trying to get skinny. Trying to run the rim. They used to have a circle. The guys run around it and see how low they could get and get around there. I remember that. It's frustrating when you lose. You know that. And when you lose, okay, who makes the most money? because a guy making$750 ,000 why are we talking about him? You pay no attention to that and listen the funny thing about it is a lot of people will see this as Hayden obviously when it comes to probably the best player on the defense is Dexter Lawrence and to come out and say something like that people aren't scared anymore when obviously statistically Basically, based on the numbers that you just said, that anyone that's being blocked in Dover teams 70 % of the time or more, I mean, there's your answer.
1:06:29There's your answer.
1:06:33Shannon Sharpe:Oh, I still think he's feared. I still think they understand. It just came out. Jeremy, what did you just do? You just set yourself up for failure. 1:08:28Here's something that should not be as complicated as it is. getting a racist statue removed. And here's something that should be a whole lot easier than it is, getting a new one put up in its place. I'm Akilah Hughes, and Rebel Spirit Season 2 is about both of those things.
1:08:43Shannon Sharpe:As I was watching these statues come down, I was thinking about what it meant that I grew up in a majority Black city in which there were more homages to enslavers than there were to enslaved people.
