In short

Nightcap Hour 1 (live from Las Vegas) mixes sports talk and a boxing guest interview, focusing on Tua Tagovailoa’s injury status and quarterback implications for the Falcons, plus Bud Crawford’s retirement and potential return.

Guests/backgrounds

Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson (former Bengals WR, NFL Ring of Fame) and Joe Johnson (“ISO Joe,” former NBA Hawks player) co-host.

Guest

boxing legend Terence “Bud” Crawford, four-division/undisputed champion (multiple divisions unified), retired but still training.

Key claims

Tua suffered an oblique injury and is ruled out for Sunday; Cooper Rush is expected to start Week 1. The hosts argue this hurts Atlanta’s chances because Tua’s health issues have been recurring, and the offense needs a QB who can push the ball downfield. On boxing, Crawford says he’s retired, but would only return for a very large payday (he cites $150M flat) and believes challengers want “payday and opportunity,” not just competition.

Notable examples

Falcons offensive weapons cited include Bijan Robinson, Drake London, Kyle Pitts, and Zaccheaus; quarterback competition with Michael Penix Jr. is dismissed for opening week. Crawford discusses his past jump across weight classes and references Canelo as a comparison point for style and power.

6:00Shannon Sharpe:Please drink responsibly and stay safe. Guys, yesterday we saw him doing practice and he went down. He's out. Tua suffered an oblique injury. Bam. Bam. And he's experiencing discomfort. He will miss Sunday's game. Cooper Rush will start. Four weeks to debate the Falcons starting quarterback center round Tua and Michael Penix Jr. and lo and behold, neither one of them will start opening week. It's going to be Cooper Rush. And yet, Ocho?

6:30Joe Johnson:Yeah. It's upsetting. It's upsetting for me. One who's always stood on that hill for two, always supported him through his ups and his downs, the injuries, the issues, the problems. Now you get a fresh start to change the scenery with the Dolphins obviously rebuilding, cleaning the house. And he goes to Atlanta with a fresh start. And we're right back to square one with the same old stuff. Now, for me, it's kind of upsetting. I was hoping and wishing he went out there Sunday and showed, you know, listen, I do belong. This is one of your last chances, Uncle Joe. This is one of his last chances.

7:05Joe Johnson:This could very well be your last stop. Right. You know, because a lot of people, a lot of teams, you know, they really don't believe in you. You go to Atlanta, you have opportunity, and here we are again with the injury bug, with the injury problems once again.

7:19Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, I agree, Joe. I think the thing is that when quarterbacks start bouncing around, they need to go a place and solidify themselves to say, you know what? He still has it. Let's make a long-term commitment. You start going, okay, last year you were in Miami, one year in Atlanta, next year you're somewhere else, next year somewhere after that. Now you turn into a journeyman quarterback. Now people are looking for you to get you on a minimum contract and pay you back up money. I was thinking that maybe, you know what, this is a great situation. Look at what he has at running back. Look at the receiving core that he had.

7:49Shannon Sharpe:the tight end with Kyle Pierce Sr. and Drake London and those guys,

7:56Shannon Sharpe:Zaccheaus, all those guys, that's what you have at your disposal. And now you're Nick. But that's been his M.O. He's been unable to stay healthy for any length of time. The one time that he did stay healthy, he played really well. I think he went to the Pro Bowl, had an outstanding season. That's the year that Jalen Waddell, Ochoa, that you mentioned, Jalen Waddell and Tyreek went crazy. But other than that, man, it's injury after injury after injury. It's frustrating to him. I know it's frustrating to him if it's frustrating to us because we're having to talk about it. But I know it's really frustrating to him.

8:28Shannon Sharpe:Man, I think it's a blessing in disguise, Uncle Ocho.

8:31Chad Johnson:A blessing, Joe? Yeah. Yeah, I think he's been – he's had this injury bug since he came into the NFL, and you mean to tell me that it's going to get better when he gets to the Falcons? Nah, bro. Nah, nah. So I think, obviously, Cooper Rush is going to start. And then you may even have to look at the guy, Strand, the backup, the rookie. He looked good in the preseason. Okay, Ocho, you know, he got some legs. He can move. He can throw. He can do a little bit of everything. He got some patience in that pocket. So I don't know, man. I don't know where they go from here. Hopefully, you know, Cooper Rush can get them some service.

9:07Joe Johnson:Hey, I got a question for you, Joe. The first thing you said is it's a blessing in disguise. Now it's a blessing for who? I don't like the way you worded that. Who's the blessing for? For the Falcons?

9:17Chad Johnson:You know that man. Come on, man. That man got injury problems. He was probably going to get hurt at some point.

9:22Joe Johnson:So you're just saying it's a blessing for the Falcons?

9:24Chad Johnson:Yes. I don't like the way you're throwing two under the bus. Well, I'm just keeping it 100. You backed up over it. I'm keeping it 100, bro.

9:30Joe Johnson:Okay. I'm keeping it 100.

9:31Chad Johnson:Now, hopefully, you know, Penance can get back, you know, and give them some good serviceable play. But right now, man, they got to deal with – they got to hope Cooper Rush can over and deliver for them. I don't like that. I didn't like that. You ain't got to like it.

9:44Shannon Sharpe:I'm just keeping it real, bro. I know. All things being equal, I'm not so sure that Matt Ryan's in love with either one of those guys. Hello. He might be in a situation. It might be a situation where he likes trying a big, strong arm. Yeah. Yes. Push the ball down the field. Because if you go back and look at it, if you look at Kansas City, it wasn't Alex Smith wasn't bad. Alex Smith had the inability to push the ball down the field. Consistently. They got guys that can get down the field. All that dinking and dunking, that's fine and good. Yeah. But you get points, big passing plays, big chunk yards down the field.

10:12Shannon Sharpe:that's how you win games. Right, yeah. This Dinkin and Dublin, this shore fishing, if you want big fish, you got to go out deep. Hello. You got to cast out deep. And I'm not so sure Tua, I don't think he can stay healthy long enough, take a hit and he's down every single time. It's frustrating. I know he's frustrating because there's someone that has dealt with injuries. Don't you think you really dealt with injuries. It's frustrating like, damn, man, what do I got? I've done everything I possibly could. In the offseason, I ate what I was supposed to. I had my body right. and the least little thing, and the next thing you know, you nicked up again.

10:44Joe Johnson:You know what makes it frustrating for me? Because I was hoping for him having, obviously having a second chance, him having to change the scenery and doing well, showing everybody else, all the naysayers, all the haters that, look, I can't get it done. I do actually belong. I can be a starting quarterback for a franchise. And then you get hurt. Not only do you get hurt, but he got hurt and the season didn't even start it, Uncle Joe. But think about how he got hurt. That's what I'm saying.

11:07Shannon Sharpe:Uncle Joe, he was just playing toss.

11:08Chad Johnson:So imagine he get hit. He was playing toss on Joe. Imagine he get hit.

11:12Shannon Sharpe:I don't know, man. Come on, man. Just like you walking into the locker room. Ocho twisted his ankle today. Yeah. Man, what happened, Ocho? You ran the speed out of something? You cut? Man, I was just walking in the locker room. People go look at you sideways, look at you like you crazy. Hey, man. People look at him. He just like playing soft talk. That's crazy. The next thing you know, he's taking a seat on the grass. Hey. Something like that.

11:32Joe Johnson:Hey, Tua, get well, boy. You know, I'm here. I'm going to support you, man. Unlike, you know, the rest of the world, boy. I mean, get back, man. Come back, man. and throw for like$4 ,500 this year.

11:41Chad Johnson:Hey, it ain't that we ain't supporting it, man. We just keeping it a bean, bro.

11:44Joe Johnson:Yeah, take your beans and take them to jail. I ain't trying to hear that. What, you want to do something? Nah, nah. Yeah, okay. I don't want to smoke, Joe.

11:52Shannon Sharpe:No, you mean Jack.

11:55Chad Johnson:Jack Strand? Nah, Jack.

11:58Joe Johnson:Jack and the beans talk? Who went up the hill?

11:59Shannon Sharpe:Who went up the hill? I thought you were talking about the beans.

12:03Joe Johnson:Yeah, I said take your beans and take them to jail.

12:05Shannon Sharpe:Okay, I thought you were talking about Jack and the beans talk?

Read the full transcript

12:07Joe Johnson:No, I'm talking about the nursery rhyme.

12:10Shannon Sharpe:Jack and Jill went up the hill? Yeah, yeah, yeah.

12:12Joe Johnson:Take them beans, take them to Jill.

12:13Shannon Sharpe:Talk about it. I thought you wanted one to plant the beans so that your beans start.

12:17Joe Johnson:Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no.

12:21Shannon Sharpe:Clearly nursery rhyme, he wasn't big on nursery rhyme. But I'm sure it's frustrating for a Falcons fan. Falcons are looking, look, you got Bijan, you got Drake London, you got Zacchaeus, you got Kyle Pitts, you got a nice offense. Yeah. You're expecting to have a better defense. Now, we're going to see Kevin Stefanski. He get a new life from Cleveland, got a reprieve from Cleveland, goes to Atlanta. So, and now, thought we were going to have a battle at the quarterback position between the two lefties, and come to find out, it's going to be Cooper Rush starting opening day. But I just – Them Falcons fans ain't surprised, huh?

12:59Shannon Sharpe:They're not surprised, and I tell you who – I promise you. I don't think Matt Ryan is surprised either. Nah. And I would not be surprised. I'm going to be more surprised if at some point in time, Strand is not starting during the season. Oh, absolutely. I'm not going to be surprised at all.

13:15Joe Johnson:I mean, I don't think you think Cooper Rush plays that bad where they have to make another change. I mean, you should be able to facilitate with that kind of talent around you. And obviously the onus for that team to have success, it's going to be on B. John Robinson.

13:27Shannon Sharpe:Remember Cooper Rush was in Dallas and all that talent that he had? Remember Cooper Rush in Baltimore? Yeah.

13:33Joe Johnson:Hey, Baltimore, ooh, not the right system. Dallas, Jerry Jones coming out saying he's supposed to be the guy. Remember that? He was supposed to be the guy.

13:41Shannon Sharpe:He was supposed to replace Dak. They had people having a conversation that Cooper Rush was better for the offense than Dak Prescott. After Jerry started that. I don't know who started it, but it was being talked about. Yeah. But at the end of the day, it comes down to getting it done or not getting it done. And right now, nobody in Atlanta has gotten it done. And the guy that you thought that you were going to start the season with, he's hurt, don't know when he's going to come back. A bleak injury. It's hard for a quarterback to throw with those. It's hard because of all that rotation.

14:12Chad Johnson:Got to. Yeah. It seems like it'll be a waste of talent. Because if you don't get a serviceable quarterback back there, Uncle Ocho, with all that talent they got offensively, and they got some talent on the defense as well, all the money that you spent,

14:26Shannon Sharpe:all the money that you spent to re-sign Kyle Pitts, look at the money that you gave B. John. Look at the money that you gave Drake London. those are three big ticket items that you paid a premium for. And in order to maximize that, you need a quarterback that's going to be able to get them the ball. And right now they don't really have anybody that can get them the ball. We're going to see what Cooper Rush can do. Cooper Rush, guys are going to want to push the ball down the field. I'm trying to get down the field a little bit. All them shallow crosses is nice. Smoke and bubble screens, that's nice.

14:53Shannon Sharpe:But, man, I'm trying to get down the field 15, 20, 30 yards down the field. I ain't trying to be all that short.

14:58Joe Johnson:Well, I'll tell you what, when you pay your skilled players the kind of money they play in them, they got to elevate the quarterback, being that they don't have a quarterback to elevate them. We're paying you the big bucks for a reason. Now we have a weak spot. We have a link weak offensively. Now we need y 'all to raise y 'all level of play so he doesn't look like the weak link on Sundays.

15:15Chad Johnson:Right. And that's like from your skill positions, your wide receivers and tight ends creating separation to where he don't have these tight windows to throw in. Yeah.

15:23Joe Johnson:I mean, listen, it's probably going to be some tight windows, but they got to make them plays. Any contested catches, you got to make them plays.

15:29Shannon Sharpe:And B. John got to be B. John. Yeah, you got to. I'm not letting B. John Robinson beat me. So what you keep? I'm stacking the line.

15:36Chad Johnson:Yeah.

15:36Shannon Sharpe:I'm going to make Cooper Rush throw the damn football down the field. I'm going to make him beat me. If he throws the ball for 300 yards and three touchdowns, I'll walk to the center of the field and shake his hand and say, good job, stay healthy, and good luck down the road. But I'm not going to let B. John Robinson rush for 125, catch for another 55, and have two, three touchdowns.

15:54Chad Johnson:You're going to give up two touchdowns and 160 yards to pitch.

15:58Shannon Sharpe:if Cooper Rush can find him if Cooper Rush can hit him yes I know what B. John Robinson can do I'm still not sure about Cooper Rush I know what B. John can do I know those skills but hand the ball off I'm going to make him throw it bad things can happen I might get a tip, might get a drop I can get anything, just handing the ball off to B. John and let him gash me five, six yards a clip nah I ain't okay with that but we're going to find out You know, look, we've had two games. We had a Wednesday game. We had a Thursday game. But now we're about to have a full slate. Everybody, everybody. We're going to see what everybody's about to put something on.

16:35Shannon Sharpe:Everybody's about to put something on tape. Hello. Everybody's about to put something on tape.

16:41Chad Johnson:Everybody chattering and talking and what they're going to do and who they're going to be. I want to see it.

16:46Joe Johnson:I know who they're going to be. I want to see it. Huh? I know what they're going to do down there over in that jungle, Joe. Yeah, okay. Huh? In that 5-1-3.

16:53Chad Johnson:Okay.

16:53Joe Johnson:I told you we're going to put up 42 on Tampa, huh?

16:57Chad Johnson:I don't see y 'all putting up 42.

16:58Joe Johnson:It's all right. What about them Cowboys? What y 'all going to do?

17:03Chad Johnson:We're going to do prime time, partner. Prime time, you know we're going to show up and show up.

17:07Joe Johnson:I'm going to tell you this, too. Boy, Odell done dyed his hair back blonde. Blonde? Yeah, he went back there blonde now.

17:12Chad Johnson:Uh-oh.

17:13Joe Johnson:You know what that means.

17:15Shannon Sharpe:That guy that played on a Sunday night, you know what Odell did. What he did? He reached back. Huh? Reached back, bro? And he didn't look. He didn't even see. He just like, it's back there. We're all back there somewhere.

17:24Chad Johnson:Hey, listen. I ain't worried about all that. You sure? No. I want Odell to play good now, but I ain't not.

17:32Joe Johnson:I don't know.

17:32Chad Johnson:I don't think he going to be able to beat us, okay?

17:34Joe Johnson:If Malik Nabors don't play.

17:37Chad Johnson:He ain't going to play.

17:39Joe Johnson:And Odell is the number one, which he will go and have them opportunities.

17:42Shannon Sharpe:Whatever. Odell, you looking like Kazam.

17:45Joe Johnson:Oh, you're right.

17:53Chad Johnson:like the jeans Ochoa dress like he going to the first grade to take pictures you know what I do like though y 'all got earth tone colors on yeah yeah yeah

18:00Joe Johnson:earth tone colors look good on my complexion yeah yeah yeah I like that I like that okay hey I got this from H &M everything about $60 yeah shoes too yeah they look like Louis Vuitton but they were $30

19:30Shannon Sharpe:When you're moving like I do, trips don't always come together weeks in advance. Sometimes production shoots, interviews, or something I've got to travel for on a short notice. Give him a pass. Go ahead. Do what you're going to do, Ocho. Go ahead. Do what you're going to do, Ocho. Y 'all see who it is? Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh.

25:01Chad Johnson:Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh.

25:03Joe Johnson:Oh.

25:06Chad Johnson:That man came with that action. Yeah. I don't like that. He got off on you first. Bud, what up, bud? You let him get off on you first.

25:14Joe Johnson:He's going to have to. Bud.

25:19Shannon Sharpe:There you go. We know you. I told him he said, hey, don't tell Bud nothing. He was going to try to sneak it. That's why I started talking. Let you.

25:27Joe Johnson:I want to sneak him. Anything I do with Bud is going to be head up in his face. Hey, man, stop it.

25:34Shannon Sharpe:Bud, what's with this everybody challenging Bud? We got Boots challenging you, Ocho challenging you. Oh, wait, time out, time out. Disco back way back. This ain't nothing new.

25:43Joe Johnson:No. This ain't nothing new. No. You ain't been wanting this work. What you talking about? You ain't been wanting this work. I've been challenging Boaz about 12 years. He saw my hands one day. He was like, Boaz, I don't want none of that. Damn, Boaz. Yeah, yeah.

26:00Chad Johnson:Boaz, look at his hands.

26:02Shannon Sharpe:He looked at his hands. Yeah. He ain't got no boxer's hands. He ain't got no hard-looking hands to it, bud. No, he don't. Bud done heard they called me hella hands. He know. We seen you fight. That counts? Yeah, everything counts. Hold on.

26:16Joe Johnson:Yes. They know you seen me fight in a structured environment that I've never been in. So you said, I scale the word of this. Yeah, three fight. Yeah, now that. Damn, bud. Hey, three fight? Me? Anybody. Oh, yeah, leave me out of that. No, no, no. I'm too frail. Hey, for somebody that never did it, I won that bag. Oh, I was about to say, okay. Okay.

26:37Shannon Sharpe:We know who we got here. We got four-division champ, three-division undisputed champ.

26:42Joe Johnson:Legend, icon.

26:44Shannon Sharpe:He walked away from the top of the game, but everybody trying to – every time he says, I'm leaving, they try to pull him back in. We had Dana White on. Dana said, look, me and – what's Turk? Turk, if we can bring him the right fight, we believe we can get Bud to come back. Is Boots in us the right fight to get Bud Crawford to come out of retirement? If the money right for us, if the money right for us,

27:06Joe Johnson:and we'll come back. You're my agent.

27:09Shannon Sharpe:I guess you're my agent.

27:10Joe Johnson:I'm talking for you. No, I mean, listen, we the A-side, right? We the A-side. To get us out of retirement, we need$150 million flat. You coming out for$150 million, bud? Man, I'm retired, man. Bud said he retired. I'm about to be 39 in a couple of weeks.

27:24Shannon Sharpe:So ain't nothing can get you to come back in the ring. Why don't you want to jump on me, man? They think you done got old, bud. They say they see the agent lying. Oh, he He playing possible He playing possible Okay I'm chilling Hey, honestly, I'm chilling You know what I mean? Because Before Before I You know what I mean? I retired There wasn't too many people Jumping and calling for Terrence Crawford Right Damn You know what I mean? So now that I'm retired Everybody, you know I think it's a good thing They calling out your boy Yeah

27:58Joe Johnson:I think it's a good thing though Do they really want to fight, bud? or they're looking for a payday? I think it's the payday. Because they know. And opportunity. Yes. You know, it's the payday and opportunity. Okay. You know, they look at it and say, okay, we're going to get the highest check of our career. Correct. This dude about to be 39, you know, in a couple of weeks on the 28th. Ah, he probably slowed down a little, a step or two, and maybe this is the right time. You know, so everybody licking their chops at the throw.

28:30Shannon Sharpe:But, bud, you still – you be posting, you still in the gym. Don't let him fool you now just because he said he retired. That don't mean he just taken completely off. He ain't doing it right. He's still in shape. I mean, you give him an eight-week camp, and he ready to – you ready to go, bud. You ain't fooling nobody now. Man, I'm chilling, man. Hey, hey. I'm enjoying everybody, you know, doing what they do and, you know, supporting the sport of boxing. Yes. You know, from afar, and I'm loving it.

29:00Chad Johnson:Hey, hey, I know a man with a plan. I know when he laying low and playing slow. Yes, sir. You hear me? I know, bud. Yeah, I know. What? I know.

29:08Shannon Sharpe:You know who said he want to fight you for real, though. Everybody want to fight you? Nah, this guy, he called you. I said, you be hating on him, and he tired of you hating on him. He said, he going to put a stop to that.

29:16Joe Johnson:Man, who that?

29:17Shannon Sharpe:Ryan. What's wrong with Ryan? Ryan do this before all his fights. You know, Ryan said I ain't never fought no fast, young, hungry lions. Right. You know, he must ain't paid attention to my career and looked at the people that I fought coming up. Yeah. Right. You know, from 140 to, you know, 135, 147. Like, it's cool, you know, for him to try to diminish, you know, the things that I've accomplished. But he, how is Ryan? I don't even know. How old is Ryan? Ryan been, you know, a big name in a sport for a long time. You know, and he's a one-time world champion. At 28. You know, just one time. Yeah.

30:13You know, and he's fought, you know, some marquee names. But, dude, this your first title defense. you know and you know you'll be blessed if you accomplish half of what I've accomplished in the sport of boxing you know so while you sitting over there talking you know and trying to take credit away from one of the GOATs you need to you know keep stirring up some great wins and you know

30:49Shannon Sharpe:get on that level Let's talk about this fight. Ryan Garcia, Connor Ben, 147. Ryan said we had both fighters on. Ryan said, look, they paid me to beat up a novice. You're talking about a guy that just got into the—I've been fighting since I was seven, eight years old. This guy just started fighting. He's 17 years of age. He said, it should be against the law that they're going to pay me this kind of money to beat a novice up.

31:16Listen, sometimes he makes valid points. Ryan does got the experience. Ryan, you know, is the favorite to win. Ryan, you know, have everything on his side to win this fight. Right. But that's not saying that he's going to win. Right. Because I picked Ben because if he can take Ryan punches at 47, we know he can take it at 60 because we know Chris is a bigger puncher than Ryan. Right. But being that Conor had to suck down a 147, which he ain't did in a long time. You say four and a half, five years. Right. And we seen his last fight, which wasn't at 160, he kind of, you know, he didn't look the same as he did at a higher weight, at a lower weight.

32:07Now he's coming even lower. So we want to see how his body absorbed the punches because we know Ryan got a good left hook. We know he's fast. We know he's sharp at times. But his skills ain't too shabby, if you ask me, when comparing to him fighting at 7 and 8. So there's a lot of holes in his game because I don't think Roley started boxing at 7 or 8. Right, Roley started late. You see what Roley did with him. Right. So there are going to be opportunities for Conor. Right. There's going to be opportunities for Ryan. So whoever comes more prepared and, you know, execute their game plan is going to win.

32:55What do we see with Ryan?

32:56Shannon Sharpe:I mean, we watched him against Devin, and he looked fabulous. And then we watched him against Roley, and then we watched him in some of his other fights. We're like, bro, what are you doing? Why are you like this? You have so much talent. You're so skilled. Why not prepare every single fight like you prepared for Devin? Styles make fights. Okay. You know, you can't go in a fight thinking, all right, since I fought this guy this way, I'm going to fight this guy the same way because it's not going to happen. You know, a lot of fighters, you know, go in a fight and they try to do the same thing over and over.

33:32Okay. That's been successful previously against their opponents, but some fighters just not going. Right. You know, some fighters are going to make you fight. Some fighters not going to let you, you know, get your favorite punch, you know, on them. And you got to figure out another way to land these big shots and get the victory. You got to use something that you ain't been using in a while. You got to pull out some tricks and trades. Like, you just can't do the same thing over and over. Then people going to get the cut.

34:05Shannon Sharpe:They're going to neutralize that. They know everybody. They know he's sitting on that. sitting on that. We're not going to let you get that off. Okay, now what? You see what happened. You know what I mean?

34:21Joe Johnson:How has retirement been so far? Being away from the game, enjoying, not away from the game because you obviously commentate now, but just in retirement in general, how has it been? Great, great. I've been enjoying the hell out of it. You know, I don't got to worry about nothing. All I got to do is enjoy life, travel the world, and be a fan. Do you miss it at times? Because I think about when I retired, I'm not sure how I feel. Maybe when Joe retired, I still miss the game. I still miss it. So do you miss boxing? Obviously, when you're having to commentate and watch other people fight, do you still have that itch to compete?

34:57I'm always had that itch to compete. That's just me. I'm not saying anything. But, like, in the ring, no, not really. You know, because I don't I did everything When I walked away, I was I was Like, you know what I mean You can't You can't do it no better than How I did it You know, from how I started To how I finished For how Going against all the odds From promoters From managers From, you know, just so many people trying to pull and hold me back from nobody wanting to fight me. Right. You know, a lot of people, they say, oh, he ain't fought nobody. He ain't fought these men. I came in. I didn't want no tune-ups.

35:50Right. You know, I called out the biggest and baddest people in every division that I ever stepped in. At that time, yes, sir. I clean this division. It's on to the next.

35:59Chad Johnson:Yeah. I clean that division on to the next. I didn't feel the need to keep trying to defend my title at this weight division and fight these guys at this weight. I'm going to bigger and badder. So when I became undersputed at 140, all right, I didn't clean that division out. Y 'all say ain't nobody down there. Let me go up to the next division and clean that one out. Now y 'all say that ain't nobody there. Let me go up there and clean that one out. When I went to 154, I went to fight Fandor the first fight. Before that, I went to fight Australia. Cut them? No, no, no. Horn? No, Tim Zhu. Oh. Oh.

36:46You know, I wanted to fight Tim Zhu, but Tim Zhu, they fought each other, Tim Zhu and Fandor. That's a bloody fight. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. When it got cut. So I'm like, all right, well, let me fight, you know. Who y 'all got in 54 for? Let me fight Fendor. Yeah. They said, nah, he ain't fighting because he broke his nose or something. You know, so I'm like, all right, well, who's out there? Right. You know, Madrimov was the number one guy in the division at the time. I'm fighting him then. Let me get him then. Yeah, I need one of these. I don't want to test it. You don't want to tune up what at 54?

37:26Shannon Sharpe:Give me the best at 154. You say he's the number one contender? Okay, I got him. Yes. You know, and I just tell to, you know, how I handle things. Yes, sir. I never, you know what I mean, shied away from the fight. Right.

37:40Joe Johnson:I got a question. I got one more question before you go. This question would let me know if you're coming back out of retirement to fight at any point. I'm not, man. I'm chilling. Listen to me. Oh, wait. Just answer this. It don't sound sincere. Hold on. Wait, wait. Hold on. He said, wait, unless you what? Unless I have to beat you up. You don't want this work.

37:56Shannon Sharpe:What you were fighting him at? What you fighting him at, bud? His weight? Uh. 185?

38:01Joe Johnson:You 185? I'm 205 right now. I'm about to say you little, dude. I come down, though. No, I'm fighting you at 205. Mm. I don't got to weigh 205. But I would hurt you, bro. I'm serious. No, like, all jokes aside, you my dude. You my dude for a long time. I respect you. Did you get dropped? I would hurt you. Huh? In your fight? Yeah. When you're going to be sleeping this fight? Uh. You been dropped before? Nah I mean you went down Nah But I got up though No but you gonna be asleep this far I guarantee you gonna drop me The chance that you No I will fuck you up

38:33Shannon Sharpe:He gotta have a hair gear though He gotta have a hair gear I'm knocking him out with the hair gear You knocking him out with hair gear? Oh man come on bud Let's bet Let's bet That I drop you? What you wanna bet? Let's bet What you wanna bet?

38:44Joe Johnson:How much? Whatever you really love Oh my god How much you got? Y 'all gonna put money on me? He betting on Bud. Yeah. You betting against me? I don't bet. I'm not a better. No, Bud don't bet. How you going to bet against him? I don't gamble. I don't gamble either. But you going to bet against your cause? Joe, how much you got on me? Yeah, yes. I'm trying to come up. I can't hear him. I can't hear him. I'm trying to come up. Hey, Joe. I can't hear what he's saying. Y 'all not going to go on my side? No. I'm going to go on your side.

39:08Shannon Sharpe:I'm going to put 50 on you and 250 on Bud.

39:10Joe Johnson:50 what? 50 ,000?

39:11Shannon Sharpe:Yeah.

39:12Joe Johnson:Okay, bet. How many rounds? I want to run a clock. I want to run a clock. No rest. Damn. I got an M say I'll drop you. Mm. I got two. With headgear? You going to drop it with headgear, bud?

39:25Shannon Sharpe:Man. What size gloves you using?

39:28Joe Johnson:You over 48, so you got to use it. It don't matter. 16. When we spar, we got to go 16. Hold on. I'm dropping you. You dropping it with 16-ounce gloves and headgear? On my mama. Oh, my God.

39:39Chad Johnson:Oh, yeah. When he put it on his mama, he ain't playing now. Hey. Huh? Ocho? The man put it on his mama. I guarantee you too. I got my movement, bud. I ain't going to lie to y 'all. With a body shot? You can drop with a body shot? It don't matter if it's a body shot or a head shot. I'm dropping Ocho.

39:53Joe Johnson:The funny thing about it is I'm going to control the distance. He ain't even going to get inside. Ocho. Who do you think you talking to? Ocho, you see how long my reach is? Boy, you see, they call me Bird, nigga. What you talking about? Yep. You see my wingspan? Stop paying me, man. Stop paying me. I ain't none of them. You can get this work. 41:09Chad Johnson:What you want? You want cash or wire transfer? How you want it? I want it to wire. Oh, okay. Just wire it to me. You know what I mean? We ain't got to deal with no cash. I don't know if you're giving me fake money or nothing. We ain't about to deal with none of that.

41:23Shannon Sharpe:No issues. But you fought at 54, and then you say, you know what? Damn 60. I want this thing. There's a guy at the top of the mountain that everybody's been talking about. Yes, sir. And we've seen people, and for whatever reason, when they go to fight, they fight good at every division. but as soon as they get to him, they shy away from it. And I sat down and talked. I said, I've talked to a lot of guys, boxing and UFC, and they say all this. I say, Bud Cross is the only guy that I saw the cross from, and I can look at him and tell. I said, he means every damn thing he said. I said, he said, I'm going to beat him.

42:01Shannon Sharpe:He said, everybody keeps talking about can I take his power? What are you going to do when I touch him? Can he take my power? When did you realize in that fight, I'm going to beat this dude when he's signing contract

42:19if you notice I've been calling out Canelo when I was at 147 I wanted to go from 147 all the way up to 168 to fight Canelo so that wasn't nothing new I just felt like my style and his style you know matched up yeah it was perfect I'm like, man, dude, these dudes that he's fighting, they not on my level skillful wise. They might be bigger than me and stronger than me. But from here. Right. No, you know, you know. So when I started sizing them up, I'm like, dude, I'm taller than him. He might be a little thicker than me. Yeah. But you look like, OK, like, come on, let's let's get this in. Whatever you're chasing, flex your next with new On Plus 12-milligram nicotine pouches.

46:04Shannon Sharpe:What was it about him that you felt? Because he unified the 168. Nobody had ever done that, and they've been some great champions at 68. And nobody's ever done what he's done at 68. What was it about his style of fighting that convinced you, I can beat this dude. Yeah, I'm 147, and I'll be coming up. because we don't normally see guys jump three weight classes, build up to it. You basically have a tune, even though he was the number one. Basically, you jumped 54, 60, and went to 68 from 47. Wasn't it the way he sit down and try to land every punch, and you could see every punch coming because he tried to throw off his back foot and just hit every of his front foot and try to land every power shot because you was timing it perfectly.

46:48Shannon Sharpe:Like, you saw everything like he was in slow motion because Ocho and I, we were at the fight. And we're watching this, and I'm like, man, Bud is literally, I don't know what they saw. The round that they gave him, I don't know what they saw. No, it was just that I'm a student of the game. Okay. And I've been watching boxing and studying boxing ever since I was a little kid, as well as being an active boxer. Right. So being a fan of Canelo for all his career, I just knew what he was going to do when he was going to do it because Canelo is Canelo. What you see is what you get. You know, he might have slowed down a little bit moving up in weight divisions.

47:33Right. But he's got stronger.

47:36Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. You know, so me sparring these big dudes and taking they punches, I'm just like, man, this dude a heavyweight. Or this dude 200 pounds. You know, I know Canelo ain't that big. Right. So, but who knows? Canelo might punch harder than him, too. Yeah, right. So, I was just like, man, I always said, if I take your punch, you in trouble. Why don't they give you more credit for being a student of the game? We hear all these other boxers, they're a student of the game, and their boxing IQ is so high. But they never give you that credit. They just like, Bud just got dog in him. Bud just fights you.

48:22Shannon Sharpe:Why don't they give you the credit that they give some of these other students of the game? I think it's just politics. Okay. You know, and following. Yeah. I've been discrediting my whole career. You know, I'm used to it. Right. It ain't nothing new. You know, like, hey, history is made. You can't tarnish what's in black and white. Cemented. three divisions undisputed. Five division world champion. Unified and four divisions.

49:00The accolades

49:01Shannon Sharpe:go on and on. But even if you were to come back, but what, I mean, come back for what and do what? There you go. Because even if, let's just say for the sake of argument, you were to come back, you beat Boots. Everybody's going to say, you should have beat Boots. You were better fighter than Boots. So for me, yeah I would love to see you fight again but deep down inside when I think about it what are you coming back for? They're going to say oh well you more improved and we know the type of fighters you was fighting compared to the type of fighters he was fighting. Boots is a talented fighter.

49:35We just want to see more. Just like they said with me. Everybody say oh well we know you fought this guy we want to see more. We want to see you fight this dude. We want to see you fight this. All right, put them up. Right. Put them up here. There was no case where it was a Virgil and Boots situation with me other than Spence and Crawford. Right. Because anybody that they mentioned, I was fighting. All right, who? This guy, this guy? Besides Keith Thurman and Danny Garcia. Right. which both I try to fight. I try to fight Keith Thurman when I moved into the division because he was the number one guy in the division at the time.

50:23I went straight to him. Like, I want to fight Keith Thurman. He said, he ain't got no belt. He said, why is we talking about this guy at 140, and he ain't even fought at 147 yet? Danny Garcia, oh, I want$5 million to fight him. All right, well, Tyrone said you pricing yourself out. You don't want to fight. Right. I don't want to fight everybody. You know, it's a reason why they say, oh, well, he ain't fought this dude, and he fought these dudes then. Man, didn't nobody want to fight?

50:49Shannon Sharpe:They didn't want to fight then, but now they want to fight. Because of payday. The payday now, bud. Because now, you said they was asking for$5 million then. They're going to be asking for$25 million now. Jeez. And you're like, bud, like, nah. Nah, when I wanted to fight, when I was hot, y 'all didn't want to fight. Now y 'all not hot, and I'm still hot. I ain't got nothing for you here.

51:09Joe Johnson:But I told you the minimum for us to even come out of retirement is$150.

51:13Shannon Sharpe:My agent.

51:14Joe Johnson:That's the minimum. Oh, he coming for$150?

51:16Shannon Sharpe:What? I'd be a$150. I'm coming over here and break your ass. I didn't tell him being mine. For$150, I'm dragging your ass out of that being my damn self.

51:27Joe Johnson:I do the whole camp, too. I'd be the cut man, boy. $150? What? Ooh.

51:33Shannon Sharpe:Ain't been a whole$150 million payday, bud. Listen, listen. He rubbed him hand like, I'm just laughing at it because, you know, when you look at history, it's like everybody has so much to say about Terrence Crawford in a negative way. How bad of a businessman I was, how I was this, I was that, my resume this and I was that. But now, look at what we're talking about paying me$150 million or$100 million to come back. If I don't have that big of a fan base, if I'm a nobody and nobody knows me, and this is what a lot of people say, oh, man, don't nobody know him? Well, why are everybody trying to get me to fight?

52:29Shannon Sharpe:Because you're going to fight? That's what nobody's ever said anything. No, I'm saying, but. Because you are something, you it. But for, I know what I am. But I'm just saying. But people try to put that out there. And people that don't know boxing, they run with it. Oh, man, he, don't nobody know who Bud is. Man, I go all over the world and people like, hey, let me get a picture of Terrence Crawford. Terrence Crawford. It's a reason why me and Canelo fight did what it did, and still to this day it holds the fucking record at Allegiant Stadium. That's crazy. You know, and Canelo couldn't do that by itself.

53:11No. When you look at Canelo past fights, it's like, all right, well, if Canelo did that by itself, then why he ain't do it before me?

53:20Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. They try to discredit you, bud. They can't discredit you. Same way with Spence. Yeah. You know what I mean? Oh, yeah, you did. Because I heard that. Well, he wasn't the same as he was in the car. No, I'm saying. I'm saying. They tried to discredit you for beating him. Our fight. Yeah. The numbers that we did with our fights was like, okay, well. I was in that fight, too. Why he didn't do that before me? Yeah. You know what I mean? So. But you know when you become great, they're going to try to discredit your greatness. Yep. All the time. Anybody that's ever became great, they've tried to discredit them once they became great.

53:50Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. And people don't see what it took for you to get to where you got to. Everybody just see, well, he just beat Canelo. Bro, the man been fighting down there 20 years. Canelo was the last fight. What about those other 41 fights that he had before Canelo? Y 'all just talk about the one fight. What about the other 41? Yeah. What about the training? People always, and I told him we was having this conversation last night. People don't want to build anything. They just want to move in. I said that. People don't want to see what Bud did to get to where he got to. Man, he took a short. How? What shortcut takes you 30 years to get to?

54:26Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. Yeah. But you hear what people say. I'm glad you're not seduced by that. I'm going to prove y 'all wrong. I'm going to fight. I jump up here. No. No, I ain't got to prove it. I done proved it. I proved it over a 30-year career. Everything that I said I was going to do, I did. Yeah, to a T. So now y 'all try to come up with these scenarios to try to entice me to come. I ain't got to. I ain't got no habit. I ain't got no habit. And I ain't got no money problem either. When you ain't got no habit, you can have money. Hey, right. You got habits, money. And ain't bad that, you know what I mean, I was smart with my money.

55:08Ain't bad that I didn't have no, you know what I mean, crazy habits.

55:11Shannon Sharpe:Right. Let me ask you this. Shakur got upset with me. I say, Ocho, Shakur is one of Ocho's favorite guys. I said, Shakur, I'm not taking anything away from your ability to fight. You're a great fighter. I said, but your style is not entertaining to me. I'm one person. I said, you say, but you're not a, what did he call, he said, I don't know boxing. I said, but let me tell you something. The people that don't know boxing, those are the ones that buy the tickets. The official notos, they're not paying$15 ,000,$20 ,000,$30 ,000 to see a fight. He made a point. What's the point? Talk to me. You know what I mean?

55:49About you not knowing boxing because you saying that you don't like his style, but at the same time you like boxing. Yes. But his style is the art of boxing. So how can you say you don't like his style, but you like boxing? You don't like boxing. You just like fighting.

56:11Shannon Sharpe:Can I like basketball and not like LeBron James playing style? But I'm saying basketball and boxing is two different things. It's the same thing. It's with what preference, what a person like is an opinion. Boxing is the art of not hit and not get hit. Okay. So when we talk about boxing, we talk about the martial arts of hit and not get hit. Yes. So I understand, you know, over the years we done got spoiled with some massive fights that, you know, blood and sweat. And we just like, man, that's what we want to see because it's exciting. Yes. you know and you're not wrong for wanting to see the fights that you like that's exciting to you but when we say we a fan of the sport of boxing you know you gotta be a fan of I'm not saying you gotta be but you should be a fan of Shakur Stevenson Floyd Mayweather because they mastered the sport of boxing but Floyd didn't lie to weights before them hands got brittle you know what Floyd was doing Floyd was flowboarding people.

57:16Shannon Sharpe:Floyd was motorboating people at 40. Floyd was carrying people. People just look at Floyd at 47, late in his career, when his hands got brittle. And then he's like, you know what? I can't take no chances. Because when he hit old boy and he took that knee, he's like, that change is fighting. From that point on, Floyd really didn't fight the same way. And people talk about, well, Floyd, you ain't seen nobody walk through Floyd at no weight. At 40, at 47, 54, there ain't nobody walk through him if he wasn't punching. Okay, so you hear what you just said. Yes. Who have you seen walk through Shakur?

57:49Shannon Sharpe:I ain't seen him fight nobody. You lying.

57:56Shannon Sharpe:Look, when he fought Tiafemo and what's the other guy? Zepeda. Zepeda. Tiafemo didn't walk through him. No, no, no, I'm saying. for me. But here's the thing, bud. I saw him in his hometown and people was leaving. You saw that. I was into the fight. I was into the fight. You saw it. I didn't see nothing. I was watching the fight. So you didn't hear about that? No, I'm watching the fight. But don't do that, bud. I'm dead serious. I'm not watching the crowd. So, you know what I mean? So, if people were to get up, what would that tell you? If people were to get up, you're fighting, and people get up and leaving, and you see 15, you see 30, 40, 50, 100, 200 people leaving.

58:45Shannon Sharpe:I'm not going to see nothing because I'm fighting. No, I'm sorry. She's talking about fighting. But if somebody came after the fight, like, Bud, but that's not your style. I had people boo me before. Early in your career, Bud, I ain't talking about, yeah, I didn't care. That's because they didn't know who Bud Crawford was. No, that's because they didn't like that I was boxing. They didn't like that, you know, I wasn't in there engaging in a back-and-forth fight. So they was booing. Oh, boo. That they changed you up? No. So when did you adopt this? I'll get y 'all the next one. This one I got to.

59:21I'm just going to win this one. Yeah. Y 'all get an exciting fight the next fight. The next fight. But this one, sometimes you just got to do what you got to do to get the victory.

59:28Shannon Sharpe:Okay. All right. I appreciate the enlightenment. I appreciate that. Because I grew up in Sugar Ray, Tommy Hearns, Marvin Hagler, Roberto, guys that were just Cesar Chavez, guys with that. But they fought. You see, sometimes Sugar, he'll box you. Yeah. Well, he tried to slug it out with Durant and you see what it cost him. Sometimes Durant'll box you. Durant can box you. So this is my thing about a lot of people on the outside that never been in the ring Criticize boxers For not standing toe to toe And just Banging each other out Get in the ring and try it I just want y 'all to get in the ring and try it And then y 'all have a different approach On Fighters y 'all have more respect On Fighters that hit and not get hit I think it's hard I don't think It's way harder to hit somebody stay in front of them and not get hit.

1:00:30It's way harder than just sitting there right here, bop, bop, bop. That's easy. That's why, if you notice, it's so hard for them fighters to beat the caliber of a fighter like Floyd Mayweather and Shakur, you know, because they can't keep up.

1:00:48Shannon Sharpe:They're mental. The thing that you do have to admire about Floyd and Shakur is that they're not going to let you lull them into fighting their style of fight. You're going to fight the style of fight that I want to fight. No, it's like if I hit you, you know what I mean, and you try to come back and I miss, and you missing me every big shot that you're taking, you're like, I can't hit him. It's discouraging. And now I'm getting punched all upside my head, and then when I do get close to you, you tie me up. It's frustrating. All right. All right. Well, you hit Shakur. Okay. You got me. Tell him you apologize.

1:01:27Shannon Sharpe:I apologize for you. But I got the utmost respect for Bud. If Bud say, hey, that style is exciting, I'm going to take Bud at his word. Four-time undisputed champ, five-division champ, Terrence Bud Crawford. Man, I will beat you up, man. Put your money on there. Can we do a face-off real quick, please? Hey, he not strong. He not strong, but like you. Hey, don't you grab me like that, though. Can I get my face off real quick? Come on let's do it.

1:02:27Where you was at?

1:02:28Chad Johnson:Out of the day? When you get it, you gotta come shout out. Hey, man, listen. Listen.

1:02:38Hey.

1:02:39Chad Johnson:Good to see you, man. Thank you, brother. Hey, man.

1:02:43Joe Johnson:You can't come do nothing.

1:02:45Shannon Sharpe:She said she filmed everything.

1:02:49Chad Johnson:Damn, what? I was over with you. I hurt my damn hip.

1:02:54Shannon Sharpe:No, hey, he's strong now. What's up?

1:02:56Chad Johnson:What? Look at him in there. Huh?

1:02:59Joe Johnson:Hey, let me see you standing over there, man. Hey, tell uncle I got hands, man.

1:03:04Shannon Sharpe:What's up?
