In short

College football recap and analysis, focusing on three Week 3/early-season SEC games: Ole Miss vs LSU (Ole Miss wins 32-24), Kentucky vs Texas A&M (Kentucky upsets 31-21), and Alabama vs Florida State (mentioned as a win).

Guests

Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson and Joe “Iso Joe” Johnson are the co-hosts. A featured guest is Kentucky running back C.J. Baxter, who scored two touchdowns in Kentucky’s upset over Texas A&M.

Key claims

  1. Ole Miss won because of quarterback play from Trinidad Chambliss, who was “picture perfect” in the first half, despite an early interception; LSU’s comeback was stopped by Ole Miss’s execution late.
  2. The Ole Miss-LSU game was a “tale of two halves,” with LSU lethargic early and then scoring 17 straight; penalties and turnovers mattered, but Ole Miss stayed poised.
  3. Kentucky’s upset is attributed to a “one-play mentality,” better second-half response, and a new coaching culture under Will Stein.
  4. Texas A&M coach Mike Elko took full accountability, saying there were “no positives” and it was his coaching/program’s fault.

Notable examples

  • Ole Miss: Chambliss 33/48, 363 yards, 2 TDs (plus 1 INT); receiver Trae Ray 7 catches, 115 yards, TD; LSU’s 17-point run fell short.
  • Kentucky: Kenny Mincy 14/18, 252 yards, 2 TDs; C.J. Baxter 87 yards, 2 TDs; Elko’s postgame quote; Baxter discusses transfer-portal culture and “one play” focus.

We've got Kentucky running back CJ Baxter. He joins us. He scored two touchdowns in Kentucky's upset win over Texas A &M. But the game of the week. Rebels outlast head coach Lane Kiffin and the Tigers in a thriller. Ole Miss, number eight, Ole Miss, beat number seven LSU by the score of 32-24.

7:19Shannon Sharpe:Trinidad Chambliss, this is why he came back. He was on fire in the first half, 21 of 27, 248, two touchdowns. End of the night, 33 of 48, 363. Still those two touchdowns had an interception. They didn't run the ball particularly well, but when they needed to have it, Trinidad Chambliss, he delivered for them. LSU stormed back with 17 straight points, but it wasn't enough because Trinidad Chambliss was just too much for them to overcome. And the wide receiver trailing Ray seven catches, a buck 15 on the touchdown as the Ole Miss Rebs hold on and beat LSU Tigers by the score of 32-24. It was a ball game.

7:55Shannon Sharpe:We ended up being the ball game that we wanted to see. We didn't think it was going to be that way early in the first half, 20-47. They're like, wow, come on, LSU, make this a ball game. And lo and behold, 17 straight points, and they make it a ball game, but the Rebs win 32-24. Ocho, Joe, I'm going to throw it to you first. Ocho, what did you like about Ole Miss and how they were able to get this done?

8:16Joe Johnson:Listen, I enjoyed it. I think it comes down to the quarterback play, Unc. Obviously, defensively, it comes down to the quarterback play. Who plays quarterback the best and doesn't make mistakes at the wrong time? Obviously, an interception was thrown by Chambliss early in the game. But as you saw, Levitt's interception hurt them much more worse than Chambliss did. When you throw those interceptions, when you make those mistakes, it matters a lot. Outside of that, I thought Ole Miss was going to run away with the game. I did too. Yeah, I thought they were going to run away with the game. But LSU tightened down, came back in the second half, had 17 points.

8:56Joe Johnson:Obviously, I thought they were going to be able to tie the game. It's just unfortunate and really unlucky that the ball, you know, what do linemen do, huh?

9:04Shannon Sharpe:What do they do? They get their hands up. That ball hit him in the head, though. Ocho, that didn't touch his head. It hit off his helmet.

9:09Joe Johnson:Yeah, so, you know, get in the passing lane and try to do your best, you know, to interfere with the ball, interfere with the pass. I mean, it was cool. There was so much buildup to this game. The first half wasn't equivalent to the buildup, you know, the hype and all the going back and forth. But the second half, sure did damn live up to it.

9:29Shannon Sharpe:I thought it was a tale of two halves, Uncle Ocho. I thought LSU looked so lethargic. They looked slow in that first half. And give Ole Miss credit. Hell, we finna try to welcome Lane Kiffin with this hot air. Boy, you think you finna come back in town and get a dub on us after we done left? Think about players who he recruited at Ole Miss. Bro, y 'all know they want to win bad as I don't know what. I thought Shambliss was great in that first half. Like y 'all say, I'm with y 'all. I thought that Ole Miss was finna blow this thing out the water. But it seemed like they shot they water in that first half.

10:05Shannon Sharpe:Then that second half. Oh, whoa, whoa, whoa. What? I said it seemed like Ole Miss shot they water in the first half. Yeah. I gotta pause it, yo. Yo, my friend. I tell you what, pause it. You out there talking about blowing loads and wards and all that? Hey, pause it, play it, rewind it, take a damn picture. I don't care, okay? Listen, check it out. After that first half, I thought LSU was able to get stops, bro, and they kind of got out the mud and got back in the game. But, man, Ole Miss, bro, the way Shambliss throw that thing. Okay, Ocho, he got some pop on that thing. You hear me? I don't know if he got a little tired in that second half, but that first half was picture perfect.

10:50Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, he can't play much better than what he played in the first half. that was a that's a signature game I mean to beat your former coach beat that team that's the number eight team number seven team in the country and to do a job like that yeah they didn't want to lose this game but if you think about it it ain't no love lost between the players it's not like the players speaking glowing terms of Lane Kiffin right it's like well hey he recruited me blah you know we had you know he was our coach but he's not our coach anymore wishing the best and keep it moving there's no there's no and you know hey we wish Lane the best and Lane was great and I'm glad.

11:23Shannon Sharpe:No, there was none of that. That was about business. It's like, look, bro, you thought your situation where you were going was much better than what you had here. So you said you'd rather coach those players than coach us. Well, be gone. Hey. Be gone. And I'm going to tell you, like my grandfather used to say all the time, boy, you look like a Monday. You look better going than coming. And that's how they feel about Lane Kiffin. He looks better going than coming. Yeah. But I thought they played. I thought Ole Miss played as well as you can play in the first half. And that's the thing to Ocho and Joe.

11:54Shannon Sharpe:You know when you get a lead like that, do I keep my foot on the gas and make a mistake or do I try to sprinkle some runs in here and try to, you know, that interception, that was just a bad interception. But that was a turnaround. I mean, I don't know. That was a turning point in the game when he threw that pick because before then he was picture perfect. I said, boy, they finna go down here and score again. This thing finna get out of here and he threw that pick. LSU never looked back. Yeah, LSU went on that spree and the next thing you know, we got a ball game. We got a tie ball game. But give Ole Miss credit because normally when you're at home and a team sees that kind of momentum, it's easy for them to pull ahead.

12:34Shannon Sharpe:But give the A. They're like, nah, not today. We fought too hard to get into this position. I'd be damned if we let this thing slip away in our backyard. Ocho, Joe, throw it to you first, Joe. What does this mean for Lane Kiffin? because the team that you were coaching not only went to the college football playoff last year, won a game, but they just beat the team that you said you thought you had better. What's being reported is that both teams were willing to pay him$14 million, $13,$14 million a year. But LSU probably pulled ahead because they were willing to invest$15,$20 million in the roster.

13:13Shannon Sharpe:Bingo. Something Ole Miss, I don't know if they were willing to do or couldn't do, but whatever the case. But what does this mean for Lane Kiffin? I don't think it really means nothing for Lane Kiffin. Okay, Ocho. This is just his second game at LSU, bro. He just got there. You got to give him a little time to kind of build out that roster. You know, I know this was a big game against a former team who he coached. He got a lot of his players over there. It was going to be tough to win that game. I don't really take a lot from this. I'm glad that LSU was able to get back in the game and make it a game, you know, versus getting blew out 56-3 or something.

13:47Shannon Sharpe:You know what I mean? Yeah.

13:49Joe Johnson:Yeah. Ocho? Hey, honestly, it doesn't mean nothing. This is a game. Now, obviously, this is a game that you want to win, you know, because of the bad blood, because of you leaving, and some of the players not feeling well about you leaving. Why would you leave us? Why would you leave us? Why would you go to LSU? Obviously, it's a little different. Ole Miss is a great school. It's a great school, great history. But even if they were paying the same amount of money as a head coach, am I going to be able to get the players that I need to compete? Am I going to be able to get the players to help me get a natty?

14:19No.

14:20Joe Johnson:And change this culture around. But, hey, the players that you recruited at Ole Miss almost got you a natty. Yeah. I'm just telling you why he chose LSU. Maybe. Maybe. I have to put you. We both, all three of us have to put ourselves in Lane Kiffin's shoes and what school would have the better resources to get them what I want to. And he felt LSU was a better school.

14:42Shannon Sharpe:It's hard to fault him when you look at it. LSU is a more prestigious school. They're both in the SEC, but you know who produces the most talent. You know you're going to be able to get more talent at LSU than you are at Ole Miss. Go ahead. Go ahead, Ocho. Ta-da. You just said it.

15:04Joe Johnson:You are. And you know, it's not about one game, too. It's not about one game. A lot of people No, no. We'll make it about that one game with him leaving. Listen, Ole Miss won the battle. Will they win the war? Because the war doesn't start to the end. You know, the college football playoffs. Can you get through the college football playoffs and be competing for a natty? Hey, hey, hey, hey.

15:23Shannon Sharpe:Ole Miss, hey, they look good today, Uncle Ocho. You know, they showed me something, bro. They got some talent over there. Well, that's – this game here, damn near feel like a natty to them. Oh, yeah. Because everybody, because look, when you go to a school that's in the conference, the same conference that you are, you know, you're going to have to play face them at some point in time. It just so happens. Normally, it's a little further down the road on the schedule. We didn't expect to see this the third game of the season, but boy, it turned out to be great. Pete Golden has coached six games at Ole Miss as a head coach.

15:56Shannon Sharpe:Five have been against ranked teams. Three have been against top ten teams. He's five and one in the six games he's coached. against ranked teams. He got them boys ready, don't he? Yeah, I'm ready. That's the key. That was a good game.

16:13Joe Johnson:It turned out to be a bar. Yeah, I was going to say, what you wanted. The second half was a very good game. Yes. The first half, I'm like, what the hell did he do?

16:22Shannon Sharpe:Penalties got LSU. Remember, Ocho, they had the ball right there at the two-yard line and then got a false start penalty. They ended up backing him up. Yeah. Penalties could bite you in the butt late in the ball game. Both teams, Ole Miss 8 for 77 penalties. LSU 7 for 34. Both teams had a turnover. As you mentioned, Ocho, LSU turned the ball over on fourth down. Hey, going for the end zone. Looked like it was going to be on time, but it skipped. Hit the guy's helmet. Pops up. The guy intercepts it. But I think you've got to give Ole Miss credit that they didn't let the emotion get too high. Right.

16:57Shannon Sharpe:Because sometimes you can let your emotions get out of control. You know, hey, control your emotions. Don't let your emotions control you. And I thought they did a very good job of that. They came out their poised. They came out their sound. Excuse me. There's a lot of talk all week long. Everybody, what, college game day was on location. Everybody was going crazy, hooting and hollering. But at the end of the day, we've got to play with poised. We've got to be under control. And I thought they did a great job of that. They get out to this fast start. But when they tied the ball game up and they needed to put a drive together, they put it together.

17:30Shannon Sharpe:Yes, sir. They put it together. Absolutely right. Hey, hey. Hey. Go ahead. Go ahead. He closed it out with his legs. Okay, Ocho. We talk about these dual threat quarterbacks, man. Hey, that boy looked good back there. Not only throwing from the pocket, but using his legs, getting outside the pocket, making run. I mean, that last run he had to score. I mean, come on, bro. That's probably one of the biggest plays of the game. It was. It was. And I'm surprised that they went for two.

18:00Joe Johnson:unless the kicker was hurt yeah i was just getting ready to ask you too um if you think lsu was scored it then you think they go yeah i think no one lane probably so and i think that's why

18:11Shannon Sharpe:they did it well hey hey hey you got to have some guts yeah yeah absolutely you got to have some security too and some trust that's that's what that's what seven years 14 million that's what do they do for you? But you got to trust them boys that you got out there too, Ocho, you know, they put a lot of confidence in the kid, bro, when you see coach, he say, hey, we going for two. The last thing you want to do is mess it up. You know what I mean? Yeah, and then when we don't get it, man, what was coach, thank you, man, all we had to do was kick the PAT, Ocho. Yeah. Because y 'all know that's what they would have said.

18:46Shannon Sharpe:Oh, yeah. That's what everybody would have said. But I think the reason why Pete Golden ended up doing what he did because he knew if they scored a touchdown, Lane was going for two. Lane going for the jugular. He's going to make you go down there and have to do something spectacular to win this game. So he said, you know what? Let me go ahead and get this two. Put the pressure on you. And so at worst case, we're potentially going to overtime. But I've been damned if you're going to get a two-point conversion and beat me in this building. Well, listen. That's the last thing they wanted in Mississippi, state of Mississippi.

19:25Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, they said. These two, they got the long rope.

19:34Joe Johnson:Hey, boss. Yeah, yeah.

19:38Shannon Sharpe:He was New York City. He'd say he tied. But he tied, boss.

19:47Shannon Sharpe:Or hockey ball.

19:51Shannon Sharpe:Kentucky, upsets number nine, Texas A &M 31-21. Big time win for the Wildcats. Remember, they had what, a 14-point lead? Well, 7-7 lead and a 14-7. And then all of a sudden Alabama came racing back. Alabama did that again today. We're going to talk about them a little later. Kenny Mincy, 14 of 18, 252, two touchdowns. Running back C.J. Baxter, 87 yards, two touchdowns. And they spring the upset on number nine, Texas A &M. and Kyle Field by the score of 31-21. I don't think anybody saw this coming.

20:27Joe Johnson:Hey, I can be honest, Uncle Joe. Obviously, listen, my daughter go to the University of Kentucky, superb track program, football up and down a little bit. They're not consistent when it comes to some of the teams, especially when you're playing an opponent like a Texas A &M. This surprised me too. This surprised me too, and I'm happy for her. I'm happy for her. I'm glad they won the game. Quarterback was dealing today, boy. I forgot your young bull name. Kenny Mincy. Yeah, Kenny Mincy. Kenny Mincy was dealing today. Yeah, he had a really good game. Now, obviously, Baxter did what he did on the ground.

21:03Joe Johnson:But this was surprising. This was very, very surprising.

21:08Shannon Sharpe:I think the thing is that given who Kentucky is, Kentucky has a basketball program and a women's track program. Yeah. You look at Kenny Harrison, you look at Masai Russell, you look at Sidney Lebroni, all those went to the University of Kentucky. I forget the other sprinter, the white young lady. I forget her name. She ended up having retired because she had a foot injury. But that's what Kentucky is known for. That's the Bluegrass State. They got horses. That's what Kentucky is known for, horses. Okay? They're known for a quarter of a fairbred. But for them to go on the road and take down the number 19, nobody had this, nobody picked this coming.

21:54Shannon Sharpe:Ozmaker probably lost it. I mean, I know what you call them happy, Vegas. Why you say that? Because you know everybody picked A &M. Oh yeah, yeah. Of course, of course.

22:05Joe Johnson:Hey, listen, that's why it's called an upset.

22:08Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, but y 'all know, y 'all know Kentucky got a new head coach, Will Stein over there. This is first year So to be able to come in your first year And beat Texas A &M That's big bro They had Bama on the road last week Joe Until the second half Then Alabama ran away from them

22:29Joe Johnson:And you know what's funny too Joe The fact that you have a new coach I think it might be why They look a little different Obviously sometimes A new voice, a new coach A new team in general Will have teams looking different I think I went to two games last year. I went to homecoming last year, and obviously this is not the same Kentucky football team that I watch. The same team I watch.

22:55Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, I think there's more about Kentucky or Texas A &M, you know, once again failing to meet expectations. Texas A &M unable to meet expectations.

23:05Joe Johnson:Yeah. A few mistakes at the most important position over there, you know, in Marshall Reed.

23:10Shannon Sharpe:Two interceptions by Marshall Reed. you can't make those mistakes. Because the longer you leave a team that's an inferior team, the longer you leave them around, the more confidence I get, Joe. Think about it. The longer you're fighting, you know your sport of boxing, the longer you lead the underdog in, you don't get him out of there, the more confident he gets. He gets to those ladies right now, hold on. They're not supposed to be up out of here. Oh, I ain't got nothing to lose now. they throw caution to the wind they whip your ass it's like that in any sport football think about it the Patriots and the Giants the longer the Giants stayed in the game we're not the ones that's 18 and 0 y 'all are we're not the one that's double digit favorites y 'all are we're not trying to be the perfect team the best team in NFL history y 'all are and guess what I can still see your taillights

24:13Shannon Sharpe:that's what happened yeah and uh but i think kentucky they showed me something i i i think kentucky they showed me last week that they're better than what you think an old kentucky ball club would be considering you know you played alabama look you had alabama on the ropes and then a few turnovers here and the next thing you know they get on they steamroll you and alabama has that kind of ability. We saw it today. They dropped 50 after trailing a lot of the ball game. And they go on a roll and they drop 50. But Marcel Reed got to do a better job and take care of the football. When you play an inferior team like this, you got to get them out of there early.

24:51Shannon Sharpe:And that's what you normally see with ranked teams when they try to play an inferior team. And I understand. Guys, we understand it's a conference opponent. They know each other. They're familiar. Even though Coach Stein is just getting there, they know each other. They play each other. Some of these guys probably played high school ball with or against the other team, but this is a bad, bad. Oh, Texas A &M about to fall. Texas A &M about to fall like Oklahoma fell last week when they lost to Michigan.

25:19Joe Johnson:How many spots though? They're not going to fall.

25:22Shannon Sharpe:They're going to drop at least 13. That's an unranked team that beat you at home. Hey, you said, that many spots? Yeah. I think Kentucky, that's a scary team too considering the fact that with that new coach over there they probably got a whole different system so you don't really know them like that even though you may know who they are as players they probably run a whole different system that's probably why they look the way they look these first couple weeks yeah you're right you're right about that Joe you know give Kentucky credit for going in there because nobody picked them to win and sometimes that's the best place to be when you don't have expectations, you can surprise people.

26:08Shannon Sharpe:It's when you have those expectations and you meet or exceed those. That's what's impressive. It ain't nobody expecting nothing of you. Texas A &M probably took them boys lightly too. Thinking because they unranked. Of course.

26:25Joe Johnson:It's probably one of them games too, Uncle Joe. You look at the schedule. And because of who they were or who they've been in the past, We're going to chalk this off as it went. Not knowing some things have changed.

26:43Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, because normally Kentucky is homecoming. Kentucky, Vanderbilt, those are your homecoming team. Or you go get a Western Kentucky, but normally if you've got to play a conference opponent, I'm not trying to put Alabama. I'm not putting Georgia on my damn homecoming. I'm not putting Texas. y 'all, hey, step right on up, Kentucky. Step right up. Step right up. Hell, I remember when I went first to Savannah State, hell, we opened the season to somebody homecoming. That's how bad they were the year before. I think we were about four, five people homecoming that year. He was playing? He was playing.

27:24Shannon Sharpe:He was my freshman year. Hey, y 'all was doing everybody homecoming. Damn, look at me. I'm like damn this thing I said hey cause back when I first went to Savannah State there was no you at it it was historically black colleges it's HBCUs that's what it was you know we got a little money now so now we throw the attack that you on HBCUs and I'm like damn they're like nah dawg we homecoming they end up there dancing everybody going crazy I'm like aw dawg we gonna put a stop We used a couple of people, hey, I think we went, what did we go, six and four? I think we went six and four my freshman year.

28:08Shannon Sharpe:Shoot. And then the next year, I think we went 5-5 and won something like that. But what? It's back like that now. Wouldn't tell you what, they ain't been nobody else putting us on no damn homecoming. You say after that? Yeah. Bet that?

28:24Joe Johnson:Yeah, hold on. I'm talking about right now. I mean, it's back. Now they back. Oh, there you go. There you go, Ojo. I'm just saying. You talk about the past. You talk about the past. We talk about 40 years ago. I talk about right now. Now teams are scheduling Savannah State to be their homecoming. They keep their confidence high? Now listen. Hey, Joe, listen to me, Joe. Hey, now what can happen now, this is another sign that he probably doesn't see. Huh? He blocking his blessings because Savannah State is bad right now for a reason. Hold on, hold on. Because God, listen, hold on now. God is trying to line to be able to see his alma mater isn't doing well.

28:59Joe Johnson:But with his voice and his philosophy and his vision, Savannah State can be changed. A program that once was established. I'm with you, Ocho. I see what you're going with. I'm picking up what you're putting down. Hold on that, Joe. Hey, is he picking up what I'm putting down? Absolutely not. See, I'm playing.

29:22Shannon Sharpe:I need you to put it down because I ain't going to pick it up.

29:29Joe Johnson:Hey, let me tell you something. Absolutely not. Hey, God is putting everything in front of you now. He did. Ray Charles did not see it if you want to. I picked up a couple of things that he put in front of me.

29:40Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, like what? You know, I...

29:51Shannon Sharpe:I picked that up.

29:56Shannon Sharpe:Nah, man. Man, hey, we're going to talk about it. Y 'all saw what NC State did, Vanderbilt? Y 'all saw that game? Hey, what was it? What were they? And you think I'm going to be a coach with that? Well, listen. The only way we can lose the game, Joe, he formula the ball. Bro, you in the end zone. Run the time out the clock, step out of bounds. What did they teach you? What did they teach you, Ocho? Hold on.

30:21Joe Johnson:Hold on. You just said, what did they teach you? Maybe he wasn't taught. That's why you should be coaching. Nah, man. What are we talking about? Ooh-wee. You saying it, you just answered your own question.

30:36Shannon Sharpe:Hey, let's take a listen. Texas A &M coach Mike Elko gave a very honest assessment after losing to the Wildcats. Take a listen. Hats off to Kentucky. They came in here and they beat our ass. Not good enough from us on any level. coaching playing performing physicality anything and so on me i own it it's my program i'm in charge of it and we have to get it fixed there's no positives not an ounce of a positive anywhere so there's a there's a there's a product that's not good enough that starts with me i did not do a good enough job of coaching this team preparing this team and getting this team to ready to play this week so i don't take any positives from this game and i don't want to take anything away from kentucky like hats off to kentucky i hate when coaches get on the podium and don't give respect to the team that beat them.

31:19Shannon Sharpe:Kentucky came in here and they whooped us. And so that should be the story of the game.

31:24Joe Johnson:I like that. I love it. I love it. Straight to it. No excuses. It's my team. It's my fault. No pointing the fingers. But obviously that's what you expect from a head coach. Well, our head coaches don't be like that, Ocho.

31:37Shannon Sharpe:Nah, the accountability that that man just showed, he showed as a leader of a team, he wanted to lay, hey, hey, it ain't good enough. Not joining us right now. is the outstanding running back from the University of Kentucky. He had 19 carries for 87 yards and two big touchdowns today. Joining us is C.J. Baxter. C.J., how you doing? What's up, man? I'm good. I'm good. How y 'all doing? What's happening? What's happening? You doing great. Thanks for joining us.

32:01Joe Johnson:Hey, thanks for joining us. What's up? Why you good? I'm good, man. I literally just walked in the door. So, yeah. We sure appreciate your time, man.

32:09Shannon Sharpe:Look, you had a very tough loss. You got out to a great start last week at home against Alabama. You lose some focus, lose some concentration, turn the ball over. they run away from the ballgame, run away in the ballgame. Now you go on the road into a hostile environment, 105, 108 ,000 screaming fans. How are you able to go in there and pull off this upset against the number nine team? Yeah, like you said, last week we got off to, you know, we started off strong during the game. And if you go back and look at that game, the last like 18 minutes of the game was where we, you know what I'm saying, let the game slip away.

32:41So this week of practice, we just kept talking about finishing, one-play mentality. and that's ultimately what this game came down to. We got out there and we was able to execute because like I said, we led that Bama game in the first 42 minutes of the game. The score wasn't a representation of what really happened.

33:02Shannon Sharpe:You guys were up as much as 28-7 through the third quarter. I mean, obviously, but how do you, because you're still on the road, you know this is a very dangerous team. You're in their building. You get that big lead And how do you not let, man, we had a big lead. We had a lead last weekend. 36:33Shannon Sharpe:Let this thing slip away. How were you guys able to stay close and to make sure this week didn't repeat last week? Yeah, halftime was similar to last week. Like, we keep comparing the two, but we went in the halftime last week, close game, all of that. So we went in the halftime. We like, bro, the score is 0-0 at the end of the day. Like, we got to go out there in the second half and respond better than we did last week. And the message on the sideline the whole time was one play. Like, we all kept telling each other, one play, one play, one play, focus. It don't matter what happened, the play before, what's going to happen the next play, let's worry about this play.

37:07And that really helped during this game.

37:11Joe Johnson:You know, what do you think the difference is? What do you think the difference is in the coaching and the philosophy, the schemes, and what are you guys doing this year and how you look good, even though you lost to Alabama, but you look like you belong, as opposed to times in previous years when you played some of the top schools. What do you think the difference is in coaching this year and what was happening last year without being different? No, for sure. Well, you know, I just transferred here. This is my first year here.

37:40Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. So, yeah, I was at Texas last three seasons. Damn, hold on. You leave Texas. What you know that we know? You got some horses or something down there that got big problems. Nah, man, I just needed a new change. I feel like we all go through that. I went through some stuff in my career. Sophomore year tore my knee at the great freshman year. So, I just needed a fresh start, and this was the place for ultimately. But like you said, I played Kentucky last year when I was at Texas, and we went to overtime against them. And that team was a great team, but going into the game was like, look, they're going to play us hard.

38:23They're going to be physical. You know what I'm saying? They're going to do all that, but they're not going to be able to finish. And Coach Stein and the new staff that came, I think we have 39 transfers. I could be wrong, but it's something like that. We got a bunch of – 39? Yes, it's a lot. It's a lot of us. It's a lot of us. I don't know the exact number, but I think it's close to that. But Coach Stein and the rest of the staff, they did a great job of establishing the culture. When you have great teams that's equal in the talent or whatever you want to say like that, culture will ultimately win his games.

38:55So I think that's the biggest part. The schemes, Coach Stein, his offense that he ran at Oregon and then Coach Sloan, he come from LSU, IOC. Them two combining the offense, it's been amazing. and we all been picking up on it.

39:10Shannon Sharpe:Hey, CJ, do you feel like people have forgotten what kind of running back you could be? You could have been after your knee injury? For sure. That's why I wanted to change. You know what I'm saying? Fresh from All-American, all of that, you name it, whatever. Sophomore year, it's been in the big year. I tore my knee two weeks before the first game. So I missed the whole year. And then last year, you know, coming back off the knee just didn't feel like myself. So I just I feel like I need to change. And this was the place that won me over. It won me over because of the scheme like we talked about.

39:47And then the type of guy Coach Stein is and my running back coach, Coach Smith. I just I wanted transparency and honesty and another opportunity to prove myself that I'm still a top player in the country. and when I sat down with them and told them what I wanted, they laid a plan out, a blueprint for me and I feel like it's coming to life.

40:09Joe Johnson:How does your body feel now? Go ahead, Ocho. My bad, my bad. How does your body feel now after surgery? Do you still feel the same before you had it? Are you back to 100 %? Oh yeah, for sure. For sure, but I think the best part about it, going through something like that is you kind of find a new version of yourself. You know what I'm saying? You kind of find a new version of yourself. I tell people all the time, I'm not glad that I tore my knee. Nobody, you know what I'm saying? Us being competitive athletes, we would never want to experience an injury. But I'm kind of glad what it did for me as far as the mental side of the game.

40:44Spiritually, you know what I'm saying? My connection with the Lord, it made me a sharper player. I feel like I know everything, you know what I'm saying? So just stuff like that. kind of try to take a positive out of the negative situation. Right.

40:58Shannon Sharpe:I'm trying to figure out when you go to from Austin, Texas, you go to Lexington and you're like, I'm trying to figure out who took you on the revisit, the recruitment visit. I came with my mom and my dad. It was just us. Oh, you ain't doing that? Man, I don't know. You pissed off. Lexington, it's not a bad, I think if people come here, be like, alright. It ain't nowhere near like Austin. I ain't going to sit here and lie, Austin. Yeah, don't hold us down.

41:30Joe Johnson:It's nice. You know, my daughter... Ocho, you don't even know. I got to send you a picture. I took a picture with you when I was legit at a track meet. At a track meet so long ago. Hey, I bet the one probably... Nah, it was one in Jacksonville. Golly. A long time ago. so okay okay okay a long a long time ago a long time ago yeah i'm i'll send it to you

41:59Shannon Sharpe:all right so so check this out cj so what after tonight y 'all go y 'all gonna get oh you just walked in so i'm sure lexington is going crazy yeah they they caught us they caught us at the airport so as we landed so hey now we're really really appreciative we're already appreciative that you ain't even partake. You just came straight in, jumped on the phone, jumped on the chat with us. So, man, we appreciate that. Man, I appreciate y 'all having me, man. I was excited when my agent texted me. It was like, I watch y 'all shows, so, you know what I'm saying? I was excited when he texted me. I was like, yeah, I'll definitely do that.

42:33Shannon Sharpe:Hey, hey, hey, hold up, though, CJ. You got some plans after you get off nightcap with us? What you got going? Man, nah, I'm chilling, man. Oh, okay. Yeah, yeah, the Lord, the Lord. I'm chilling, man. I ain't, I ain't.

42:47Joe Johnson:You got to ask the right question. I got a girl, yeah. Okay, see? There you go. We proud. Yeah, my girl, she trying to get back to Kentucky right now. She was at the game, so she trying to get her flight to come back. Oh, yeah. Okay, okay.

43:05Shannon Sharpe:Nah, she won't be here tonight. Nah, nah, nah.

43:11Yeah.

43:12Shannon Sharpe:She probably should have left. When y 'all was up, she probably should have left me. and try to get on a standby flight. But there ain't a whole lot of flights from Austin to Lexington. You probably ain't with your flights. It's really not because I'm from Florida. So like anytime I fly back to Florida, I can't even, uh, no direct flights for real. Lay over in Atlanta or something like that. I know she had to lay over in Atlanta to get to Texas. So it's small airport. So small. Yeah. I mean, CJ, you the number one running back coming out of high school. Wow And so that's probably why you chose Texas Yeah, yeah, yeah It was a bunch of events that led up to it The running back coach that was there at the time Tashara Choice Oh yeah, yeah, from Georgia Tech So I was going to go to Georgia Tech coming out But then he left and went to Texas And I was like, I got to go play for this dude The bond we built, the relationship we built It was great outside of Sark offense and stuff like that.

44:18Just meeting Sark and then the reason Texas won me over was because of Coach Choice at the time and then I kind of knew who Sark was but you know what I'm saying? You know what I'm saying? Trying to build a relationship with him. But Lindell White is a close mentor of mine and he played for Sark when Sark was at USC way back then. So he gave a word and I went with that. I had a great time at Texas, man. Great place, great staff, nothing negative. I just needed to change the scenery. That's all it was.

44:54Shannon Sharpe:Sometimes we need a fresh start. We need to stay. We need to go down to bare bones, leave. We don't know anybody. We don't really know anybody at Kentucky. That's all it is. I just need to clear my mind. Like you said, that's tough. You're the number one running back in the country. You tear your knee. You're like, oh, man, you're probably thinking like, oh, man, what have I done? And then here you are right now. You help lead your team to a victory on the road against the number nine team. Yeah, the best part about it all is you kind of grow from it. That's the best part about it.

45:30Joe Johnson:Absolutely. Matter of fact, as a running back, and you look at the landscape of the running backs in today's NFL, right, who would you say is the best running back in the game? Man. I feel like you're setting me up because it's... I'm just curious. So, listen, if you ask a few running backs, everybody's answer will be different. I'm just curious. So, I kind of... I feel like when you talk about running backs in the NFL, there's tiers. So, I feel like Bijan, Jameer, and Christian McCaffrey are... They're in their own tier because they can do so much at the position. And then when you talk about, like, pure running, pure runners, you got to talk about Derrick Henry and Jonathan Taylor and those guys like that.

46:13So it's kind of, you know what I'm saying? My favorite to watch is Bijan because, you know, I was at Texas building a relationship with him. And then Jameer Gibbs as well. So those are my two favorites. My favorite growing up was Adrian Peterson.

46:28Shannon Sharpe:Hey, so what's your running style like? Who would you compare yourself to? My dad made me watch a lot of Eric Dickerson growing up. Really? A lot of people tell me Darren McFadden but I ain't He from the crib He from Little Rock Ocho D-Mac You a strada You trying to get out of there because all them guys can run I watch a bunch of different bats just try to learn from them all That's what you're supposed to do Yeah for sure CJ what's your favorite restaurant in Lexington? I ain't gonna lie to you. I don't even... You be lying to you, CJ? I ain't... Nah, I ain't been... So when I got here, when I got here, I got here in January.

47:20I got here like two weeks after school started because, you know, that transfer portal process is crazy, by the way. It's worse than recruitment process. Like...

47:30Shannon Sharpe:Okay, before you get to your restaurant, tell us about the transfer portal process because I'm not sure a whole lot of people and I can't understand it. They just hear people jump in the transfer portal and they just take off. So, all right. So, like, when you go through recruitment, like, for me, I was blessed, like you said, number one running back, all of that. So, I had offers from freshman year up until the time it was time for me to come to college. So, I was able to build a relationship with coaches over the course of four years. Whether they left schools, went to, you know what I'm saying, stayed at a school, went to different schools.

48:02So, that's different. the transfer portal process and i don't know the exact dates i could be wrong but i think it's like technically the transfer portal doesn't open until january like second or something and it closes on like the 15th or something like that it's like a two-week a two-week window for you to make a decision and you're not really allowed you're not us personally we can't talk to schools until the portal is open. So you kind of got to just wait until the day it opened. For me, the first day it opened, Kentucky hit me up and was like, we just booked your flight. Can you come tomorrow?

48:41Come in the morning. And I was asleep and I woke up like, hey, you got a flight at like 8 o 'clock in the morning. So me and my parents woke up, went to the airport, went to Kentucky, and then I visited Indiana. I kept it short and simple during the process because, like I said, I went through the recruiting process of being a high school recruit, and I kind of knew how overwhelming and stressful it was. It's a blessing for sure. And I knew what I wanted going into this, you know what I'm saying, this new chapter of whatever school I was going to pick. So it was literally between Kentucky and Indiana, and I left it at that.

49:19Okay.

49:20Shannon Sharpe:So you from Orlando? I'm originally from Boynton Beach. I moved to Orlando middle school. Rob Markman, man, I be cooking. You cook? Oh, man.

49:41Joe Johnson:Hold on. What? You know I'm a chef too. You say what? I'm a chef. You know I went to cooking all your school? Hey, my mama, the way this happened though, when I got... I've been cooking all my last like eight, nine months. When I got here and like, you know what I'm saying, not knowing nobody for real, you know, all of us transferred trying to get to know each other, no restaurant. I don't know what I really like for real out here yet. So I FaceTimed my mom for like a month straight and she just showing me ingredients, ingredients. Then I started getting it down. Then I started cooking on my own.

50:11So I love cooking now. And I meal prep for myself. So it helped.

50:17Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, see, you serious about this. I ain't like Ochoa I ain't trying to eat McDonald's every day yeah

50:24Joe Johnson:there you go it's good for you you have to understand my history with nutrition and McDonald's I swear by it because that's all I done that's all I ate you still eat it yeah look at this that man look like a praying man to me

50:47Joe Johnson:I think that's one of the reasons why I never got hurt. So that's why I swear by it. I just think if it's not broke, you don't fix it. Yeah. I mean, if you didn't get hurt, you was in it, you fine. Nah, he was blessed, bro. He got blessed. That's what it is. Nah, nah, listen. God don't bless you like that. Yeah, he blessed you. Nah, he blessed you in other areas, but it is what it is. Hey, I'm going to see you in my cookbook. I bet. I'm for real. I'll look at it. I got to see that picture, though. When you see, you're going to be like, dang. How old you think you were? I was eight. Dang it. I was anywhere from eight to 11.

51:29Yeah. Right. Now that's crazy. Yeah, it was in Jacksonville. I remember. It was so long ago. Come on. What you saying? I was saying my dad. My dad was like, you got to bring up that picture to him. Yeah.

51:43Joe Johnson:I got to see that.

51:44Shannon Sharpe:So what's your major? Sportscom. Sports communication. I graduate in December. Yeah, I graduated. So you want to get in the TV? You going to be in front of the camera? I want to be in front. I'm trying to do something like y 'all doing.

52:01Shannon Sharpe:Ain't nothing wrong with that. Ain't nothing wrong with that. Trying to do something like y 'all. You are. Did you say you graduate? You graduate this? December. This December. Yeah. Okay. Super December. So, man, hey, that's going to be. Now you just be chilling. You graduate in December. You're like, I'm just going to hang out. because I ain't got nothing else to do. Now you start once December here, you start training for the combat. Yeah, God willing. I got to take care of what I got to take, God willing, yeah. He locked in over there. What do you think you're going to run the 40 in? At my size, I want to run anywhere from 4-4 and below.

52:38Joe Johnson:I'm 6 '1", and I'm 225. Okay. 4-4, where you going to be? I'm trying to, anywhere from there, I feel like it's going to help a lot.

52:49Shannon Sharpe:Well, they tell me that you're a strider because if they compare you to Darryl McFadden and ED, they're a strider. They're a long strider. So once you unwind, you out the OCJ?

53:05Shannon Sharpe:Well, man, thanks for joining us. Congratulations on the big win. Tell your family hello. Congratulations. Stay healthy. And, bro, come back and talk to us around. All right, man, I appreciate y 'all so much. God bless. Yes, sir. Appreciate you. God bless you, bro. CJ Baxter, 19 carries, 87 yards, two touchdowns. Let up lead Kentucky 31-21. Upset win over the number nine Texas A &M Aggies on the road. They did that on the road. I mean, I like having young men come on there. They be so excited. I mean, it's great. It's great. I mean, I wish we could have had something like this. That's what I was going to say.

53:41Shannon Sharpe:Can you imagine?

53:42Joe Johnson:That would have been dope. Hey, Joe, think about this. Think if we had the exposure and the resources that most of the kids have to date, you know, as opposed to how it was during our time when we were coming up. And obviously, once we made it, I think things would have been a little easier. I think it would have been a little easier. But I think the time that we grew up in is what made us who we are now.

54:05Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, I wouldn't change that. Okay, Ocho. I mean, because when I went to college, bro, you had to work towards something. You know what I mean? Versus getting to college and getting a bag already. You know what I mean? Like, I ain't saying to some degree. I sure would appreciate that bag. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Listen, I would appreciate it and I still would have continued to work hard. But at the same time, you know, man, look, I was so locked in and focused trying to get to the next level. You know what I mean? To level up my family, bro. I don't know, man. I just think the kids look at it a lot different nowadays versus how when we were growing up.

54:42Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, yeah, they ain't thinking, well, they thinking NFL, but, you know, obviously the NIL has changed the landscape so much that they making decisions based on money, bro, like professionals.

54:55Joe Johnson:But hold on, hold on, Joe. Let me tell you something. You don't think you would have changed? What you mean? That NIL wouldn't have changed you? You don't think NIL, getting NIL back then, that kind of money, if you, you know, you still would have been the same?

55:08Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, because my ultimate goal was to make it to the NBA, Ocho. You know what I'm saying? Like guys who I idolized, you know, growing up, I wanted to play in the NBA. I thought I could play in the NBA. And so I wouldn't have gotten to college and got comfortable to the point to where I got stuck there. That wasn't possible. You know what I mean? So it didn't matter how much money I made at that time. That's why I look at cats who, you know, after they get one contract, Ocho, they done. They hang it up. Boy, I'm trying to get an appetizer, a full course meal, go for a little dessert. You hear me?

55:43Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, Ocho, I'm trying to hit him. Oh, yeah. That's how I am, Joe. I order. If I go out, I order me about two or three entrees. I eat a little bit of this, a little bit of that. Joe, you want to look at everything, huh? But Ocho, you got to realize, I had a brother in the league. Right. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. So yeah, so hey, that made me work harder. Because man, I'm like, man, that joke in the league. I'm like, man, my brother in the league. He ain't cornered just like I did. Hell, I can get to the league too.

56:11Joe Johnson:If he can do it, you can do it.

56:12Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. He ain't pig ears, pig tail. He ain't ox tail. He ain't ox. Man, I said, yeah, I can go. I definitely can go. If he can go. Because that was my mindset. Because I've always felt that anything that he could do, I could do. So, yeah, man. It wouldn't have changed me either. But it damn sure would have. It would have. It would have been appreciated though, huh? Yeah, you know our logo that's been 40 years. We probably wouldn't have gotten about$10 ,000,$15 ,000. But do you know what$10 ,000,$15 ,000 is like in 1986? Are you rich? What you talking about? What? Gas won$1.50 a gallon? Dang. What?

56:55Shannon Sharpe:Movie won$3.00,$3.50. So just imagine you getting$3 ,000 every quarter. every month excuse me, every month and haircuts wasn't but a couple dollars here right guys, I don't know what y 'all thinking, but I ain't fit to pay y 'all no$10 for no haircut, you better go and take that little $2,$3 to get on my face back in the day, yeah boy, I'd be a light dollar bill hey, boy, blue don't make me raise up it's gonna be trouble yeah Yeah. Now, you give them like$3,$4, go to the Blue Note. They used to have a little restaurant, a little dive called the Blue Note. They had nice little two-piece box. A dive?

57:43Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. You called the Blue Note? You joint? No, it was like a little restaurant. Oh, okay. They had a couple of tables in there, Ocho. Yeah. I mean, you know, but man. We had a lady that went to school with her named Wante. She just sang. Man, I called over there. Man, Wontae said, this you, Shannon? I said, yeah, Wontae, go and hook that thing up for me. Man, them Gillison, Fry Beasts. Ooh, that Texas toast. Anybody that lived in Thunderbolt or Savannah, y 'all know about the Blue Note, especially if you went to Savannah State. Boy. And she had that fool jumping about the box. What? Don't tell them.

58:20Shannon Sharpe:I ain't telling nobody Wontae. This is my hooker. Hey, Sean, let me, hey, where you been? I don't know where. Yeah. Hey, I understand. I didn't read it. What? Okay. Yeah, man. Oh, yeah, the Wappers. I remember Wappers was 99 cents. You remember Wappers was 99 cents? You said Wappers? Wappers or Wopper? Wopper, the Wopper. Burger King Wopper.

58:45Joe Johnson:Yeah, yeah. You know, I don't really deal with the ops like that. Oh, man, here you go. What?

58:50Shannon Sharpe:Hey, hey, Unc, I go to Wendy's, get that 99-cent cheeseburger. That little Junior. That little Junior. Get a couple of them. What? What? Yeah. Yeah. Man, please. Time was hard back then, man. Hey. I remember them days. There was this, back when I was eating Chinese food, there was this Chinese restaurant on Montgomery Crossroads. Chad, if you're anybody from Savannah, I don't know the name of that place, but boy, they gave them, I was always, I liked wings. I liked wings and short thighs. They called them thighs. We used to call them short thighs. But I get the wings. I get those four wings. And that chicken fried rice.

59:30Shannon Sharpe:It was good, Unc. What? Hey. Man, we could never get no money. You give us a little money, about seven, eight, nine, ten of us, we going down to Sparrow, Montgomery Crossroads, or we going to Ryan's. You remember back then, Ryan's was$4.99, all you can eat. Man, that honey butter on them rolls at Ryan's, those wings. Hey, hey, hold on, Unc. I know exactly what you're saying, but boy, when you get that Pell Grant, that$2 ,900 I used to get every semester, Unc and Ocho. Damn,$2 ,900? I send about 13, 14 to mama. I send that home to mama. So I'm out. I'm out eating good. But, boy, when you see me back in the cafeteria, that means I done blew through it.

1:00:10Shannon Sharpe:I done blew out. I'm back in the cab. They like, dang. That money done run out. Your money jumped, buddy. Boy, I blew through it so fast. Ocho, look, I done bought me a couple pair of shoes, some clothes. I'm eating out every night. Yeah, a couple weeks. Go by the guy. See me back in the cafeteria. Like, damn, why you back in the cab? I done blew through it. I done blew through that little train. Hey, I'm good, Joe. We got work studied.

1:00:34Joe Johnson:Yeah. Yeah, hey, Joe. My little pal grand, bruh. Hey, I ain't get a chance. What happened? Man, that's why I got thrown out of - You act a fool when you got your money. Man, I got my money and I put it in my drawer in my room. Two people got the key to the room. Somebody that hit you.

1:00:56Shannon Sharpe:He done jumped on the man. He done jumped on the man, Joe. How much was it, Ocho?

1:01:03Joe Johnson:Maybe$1 ,200.

1:01:04Shannon Sharpe:Maybe$1 ,200. Yeah, man. Yeah,$1 ,200 back then. Yeah, you had to have somebody about that. Man, listen. Hey, look. I want to cash that$2 ,900 check I had. Damn. Why do I really want to send mama this money? I ain't working it.

1:01:20Shannon Sharpe:Hey. Hey. You know, back then, you know, in 2000, Ocho 99. Boy, I sent my mama$1 ,500. Honey, she ballin'. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Hey, man. Hey, you like, whoo. But that was a lot of money back then, Joe. Yeah. Yeah, I go home. I have a couple of dollars. I get granted$20. Because she beat on something. He fired off. Because you know, back in the day, you know how you hold mail up and look up in it. See what's in it? If it's cash, oh, that's gone. You'll never see that. They hold that thing up to the light. And you see, oh, they got a five or ten in there. So my grandma would have my sister to wrap it up in newspaper.

1:02:00Shannon Sharpe:So they couldn't see it. They couldn't see through it. Oh, okay, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Man, please. Boy, man, I get that$5,$5. That's two gizzles box. Oh, there you go. He found it. Yeah. God, that's a long time ago. Nah, he ain't no 11. Not that size. How do you think he is there? Probably about eight or nine.

1:02:26Joe Johnson:About nine, ten. Yeah, that's A-E-U. That's A-E-U. That's a long time ago. Yeah. That's crazy. Small world, ain't it?

1:02:37Shannon Sharpe:It is. It absolutely is. I was like, boy, there was a time. Yeah, I know. There was a time that shape you're going through that right there. What you talking about? Boy, what? Hey, you ain't lying, boy. When I was in college, it was different, boy. It was hard, boy. It was hard. Oh, yeah. You had to eat that kid. But I remember my brother getting to the league, man. I was like, man, I ain't eating the cow. They said, man, go head on. I'm going to eat. We ain't got no brother in the field.

1:03:12Shannon Sharpe:I'm gone, Joe. I'm gone. Man, I ain't eating this no more, man. Later with this. Man, go ahead, Ocho. Ain't nobody falling over you. Hey, when that money was right in college, Ocho, I was eating out every night. You hear me? Hey, I can't tell you nothing. Yeah, the boy wasn't going to see me. But I had to hook up. Yeah. I had to hook up at McDonald's. You had to hook up? Yeah. I get two Big Macs. I could literally eat two Big Macs, a 20-piece nugget, a super-sized fry, and a super-sized Coke. Damn. How you eating two, huh? Huh?

1:03:46Joe Johnson:A Big Mac is already two patties and three pieces of bread. I eat two of them.

1:03:50Shannon Sharpe:Hey, I know what? Man, I ain't never been able to drink soda like that and really quince my thirst, especially with eating food. That's why I don't know how you and Ocho drinking Cokes and all that.

1:04:00Joe Johnson:Hey, Joe. Hey, I get my Coke with no ice out the gun. Don't give me no ice. Because the more ice you give me, the less soda I get. Come out of the machine cold. That's enough to eat.

1:04:10Shannon Sharpe:It's like a soda make me more thirsty. Yeah. For real? So what you drink? I grew up on them Coca-Cola boogies. I drink water, man. What you say about some boogies, huh? I grew up on Coca-Cola boogie. What the hell is boogie? That's what my grandma and grandfather used to call it. And you remember that Coke used to call it that little thick-ass bottle, Joe? Yeah. If a boy used to kill me, my granddaddy, hey, boy, let your Papa drink and knock the poison off the top of it. Man, that joke, man, he getting back. You got it. Man, I be so mad at that joke. Hey, when you say knock the poison off of it?

1:04:47Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, he going to knock the poison off the top of it. Ain't no doubt. Had I believe it in two. Like, damn, okay. Papa willing to take one for the team. Yeah. Hey. They got all kind of saying, let me get some of them wings, make sure there ain't nothing wrong with them before you taste them. Yeah, yeah. Let me find out something wrong with it first. Boy, hey. But back then, guys, I don't think it would have changed me either, Joe. Because that was Savannah State. You know, everybody like, man, you talking about going to the NFL. Ain't nobody going to no NFL from Savannah State. Watch me. Right.

1:05:24Shannon Sharpe:Watch me. Yeah. And I just think, I think for me, Ocho, it's like I tell y 'all, man, getting stamped at an early age in high school, you know, hearing them rumblings. You know, man, when I was in high school, we even had NBA scouts just come to practice, bro. When I was in high school, my coach, Oliver Fitzpatrick, I raised my right hand. I ain't lying. We would come into practice, Osho, and if it was a scout going to be there that day, he would pull me to the side. He'd be like, hey, look now, we got this man going to be sitting up there in the stands. He's going to be taking notes on your ass.

1:05:57Shannon Sharpe:Don't be in here playing that day, okay? Yeah, yeah, yeah. So he come to me straight up. You know what I mean? So it was brewing for a while. I stayed focused and locked in, bro. It wasn't nothing going to deter me from that.

1:06:12Joe Johnson:Hmm. Everybody ain't got that kind of discipline, though, Joe. That's the problem. You give some of these athletes, especially in today's era, you know, they focus on social media, they focus on the image, trying to build a brand before they even get to the goddamn league. They're doing everything backwards. and you give them that kind of money as a teenager, they lose sight. They lose sight of the main goal. Always keep the main thing the main thing. I don't care what they put in front of you, but that's the hard part. It is.

1:06:42Shannon Sharpe:Number 10, Alabama survives 50-36 unranked Florida State. Alabama overcomes a 15-point deficit to get revenge on Florida State after losing to them last year. Keelan Russell, 23 of 30, 320 yards, three touchdowns. Treshawn Brown, 86 yards rushing and a touchdown. And Lozier Brooks, eight catches for 101. They were – Alabama got to start getting off to these slow starts. They got off to a slow start last week. They averaged a sheet 48 points a game, but guess what? They got South Carolina next week. Then they got South Carolina at home. Then they're at Mississippi. Georgia at home. At Tennessee.

1:07:24Shannon Sharpe:A &M at home. at LSU, at Vanderbilt. I got a question. Do y 'all think it's because of Keelan Russell who is a... Is he a freshman? Uncle Ocho? Was he there last year? I think he is a freshman. He might be a sophomore, Joe. Is he? He a freshman. He was there. He a sophomore, huh? He a sophomore? He a sophomore. I think... He was like number one the number two recruit coming out of high school. Once they got it going, he looked unstoppable. But I'm like you, getting off to them slow starts, a lot of them good teams are going to put your ass away early, boy. Yeah, yeah. You get off to a slow start against Georgia or LSU, something like that, they'll run you out of the building.

1:08:14But they

1:08:15Shannon Sharpe:were unbelievable. Like you said, Joe, once they got going, 36 carries, 247 yards. The young man, Keelan Russell, 23 of 33, 23 touchdowns, a clean game, no fumbles, no turnovers. 1:11:44Shannon Sharpe:Boy, once they got going, they were just scoring on every possession. Touchdown, touchdown, touchdown, field goal, touchdown, touchdown.

1:11:51Joe Johnson:It was 14-3 when I was watching the game. I was like, man, is Florida State going to run away? Are they going to win it again? Are they going to run away with this game really early? At some point, Alabama is going to have to kick in. We got a little Ryan Williams sighting today.

1:12:06Shannon Sharpe:You see, what has he done, Ocho? Remember, he said he was going to play with no gloves on.

1:12:16Shannon Sharpe:Ocho, in order for you to play with no gloves, you got to play like that from high school. You just can't all of a sudden play with gloves and then say you're not going to play with gloves. No. That ain't going to happen. Tim Brown never played with gloves. Tim Brown taped his fingers. Steve Largent was another guy. play with no gloves. In order to play with no gloves, you got to have played with no gloves. You can't be gloved up and then say, nah, I'm going to go glove list. What is that though? Why? Because of the stick? Oh yeah, the technology with those gloves now, Ocho. Man, I sure wish we had, man, we used to have them big old new, we had workman gloves.

1:12:54Shannon Sharpe:You might see guys in the warehouse with Newman's on.

1:12:58Joe Johnson:Yeah, I like Newman's. Newman's was nice. None of that ridiculous padding and all that decoration. I remember Newmans. And Newmans were straight leather too, Unk. Just straight leather.

1:13:12Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. Newmans were really good if it rained. See, like those guys wearing those new tech gloves like Nike and those needles have it. When it raining, they ain't no good.

1:13:23Joe Johnson:At all. They ain't no good. I got that pad leather. I mean, listen, it looked like pad leather to me. I don't know the exact term. When you first take him out of the box, Joe, Joe, Joe, Joe,

1:13:35Shannon Sharpe:I take an average guy and put him on those, and he be making catch up on them.

1:13:39Joe Johnson:Yeah.

1:13:40Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. Hey, you put him together, you hear. Yeah, them gloves make it easy, Joe. Oh, yeah. Damn. Oh, yeah. Why you think you see them guys don't be dropping them plus and the rule change? That's why you see guys going there catching the ball between their legs and all kind of stuff. Because they ain't worried about nothing. Try that back in the 90s and early 2000s and see what it get you. Get you laid, like, get your ear hole, get you looking at your ear hole. Boy, they deemed that disrespectful. You catch the ball with one hand over the middle. First of all, they deemed it disrespectful. You caught a slam.

1:14:18Shannon Sharpe:Boy, they'd knock you out. You catch, man, Mike Singletary and them back in the day. Boy, they would knock you out to catch a slam, Rob. Like these guys now, Ocho, they catch a one-step slam. I said, oh, my God. Nah, not happening. Nah, hell to the no. But Alabama's going to have to get up. Because like I said, next week, they got South Carolina. Then they're on the road to Mississippi State. They get Georgia at home, on the road to Tennessee, A &M at home, LSU on the road, Vanderbilt on the road, Chattanooga, and then they got Auburn. One boy got a gauntlet coming up, don't they? They got a gauntlet.

1:15:01Shannon Sharpe:Big time. A &M will be ranked. LSU's ranked. Georgia's number two in the country. Tennessee not ranked?

1:15:11Joe Johnson:15. Wait, hold on. You also said Texas A &M was going to drop for that number nine. They're going to drop. You said about.

1:15:18Shannon Sharpe:I don't know if they'll lose. I don't know A &M's schedule, but they're going to drop. Right, hold on. They'll lose to an unranked team at home. The committee's going to punish. The ranking's going to punish them. Are they going to punish Lane Kiffin and LSU, or do you think they still. No, they lost to the number 18 in the country on the road. Okay.

1:15:37Shannon Sharpe:Texas A &M lost to an unranked team at home. Okay. No. I don't see Lane them dropping more than a couple of spots. And with them being in the SEC, I think Lane, Kevin, and LSU will be able to make that up against some of these top teams that they still got to play. Right.

1:15:59Shannon Sharpe:Florida defeats Auburn 44-39. The Gators tried to get the best to give the game away but in the fourth they held on Aaron Filio 15-22, 2-0-4, one touchdown, one interception. Jayden Ball ran the ball 162 yards and three touchdowns. Florida is 3-0 for the first time since 2019. Ocho and Joe or the Gators back?

1:16:26Joe Johnson:Hey, go ahead, Joe. You got it.

1:16:29Shannon Sharpe:Look, high power to me offensively, Arke Ocho. They skilled positions. They got a bunch of guys who can make plays. I think the quarterback, I can't remember. What's the quarterback name over there? Filo? For the Gators? Aaron Filo? He didn't look bad, so I think they got a great chance, but the thing is, man, they in the SEC, bro. It's just going to be too challenging weekend after weekend when you keep playing against top elite talent. Mm-hmm. I don't know.

1:17:02Joe Johnson:I think the jury still might be out. You know, obviously starting the season 3-0, that's always a good thing. It builds confidence, morale with your team. Everybody's feeling good about themselves. But obviously, can you keep doing it? Can you keep doing it when it comes to playing against some of the better schools that you've always lost to, better schools that have always dominated you. Now, can you get back to the Florida, like from back in the days when they had Redale Anthony and Danny Walford and Ike hear you? Can you get back to that? Freddie Taylor? Yeah, yeah. Oh, yeah, Freddie T. You get back to that kind of dominance and consistency.

1:17:36Joe Johnson:You know, the jury's still out. But this is always a good start in the right direction to try and do so.

1:17:41Shannon Sharpe:They probably still got Florida State on the schedule. They got Georgia on the schedule because, you know, they play Georgia in Jacksonville. It used to be called the world's largest cocktail party. I don't know if they changed the name. They didn't want to say because, look, people still drink. It don't matter what you call it. People drink it, call it football game. I don't know what. Oh, man. Man, look here. That's the whole part of tailgate. What you think they're drinking? Soda and water? Man, they're getting tore up. Hell, if I drank like that, I'd be right out there with them. Acting a fool.

1:18:15Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, for sure. Hey, Ocho, we got to get you up to Buffalo and let you jump off the table. Hey, let's do that. No, no, no, no, no. I say you. I ain't say nothing about Joe and I. Oh, wait. Y 'all going to leave me by myself? I support you, but I ain't doing that, boy.

Hey, I want to do that one. Well, you go right ahead. I like that. I like, hey, that'd be some nice content, boy. You know, hey, it ain't really nothing I ain't willing to do once.

1:18:43Shannon Sharpe:Mm-hmm. Well, we know. We know some things you do more than one. Hello. But that's between me and the fence post.

1:18:53Joe Johnson:Fence post can't talk and I won't talk. I'm not sure where you're going with that, but I don't really do nothing. Whatever I do, y 'all do the same thing. No, no, no. No, no, no. You see what you do?

1:19:03Shannon Sharpe:Joe. Yeah, yo. No, y 'all. Hey, yo, yeah. We are a team, but we part ways.

So what's the tier above tier one? You Hall of Fame.

1:19:52Joe Johnson:See, I just be making up my stuff. I ain't really like that. Oh, man. Come on, bro. Don't start.

1:19:57Shannon Sharpe:No, he ain't like that. No, he ain't like that, Joe. No, we don't want to hear that. We don't want to hear that. We know what you like. You like that.

1:20:06Joe Johnson:Sir Freak a lot? Nah. Nah, Joe. Not like that. Hey, Joe, I don't even take my shirt off. What they mean? That ain't got nothing to do with you. That's how shy I am. I'm shy, man. I'm really shy.

1:20:21Shannon Sharpe:You don't put no tape over your mouth, though. Huh? You don't put no tape over your mouth. Nah. Mm-hmm. Not what I thought. You hear the joke? Look at it. Nah. The limited city living. Hello. Hey, that's - Sir Licklop. That's what they say. Before they had pre-stample, he had a job at the post office licking stamps in the back. He didn't lick the whole... Oh. What? That joke would look up the whole good. No. Oh, man. Come on. Come on. Yeah.

1:20:57Joe Johnson:Come on, man. Hey, Joe. Hey, you know he just juggling the shiving. Ain't no juggling the shiving.

1:21:05Shannon Sharpe:Ain't no juggling the shiving. That's you. Not me. Everybody know the chat, you done told the chat. All them gadgets you done came out here with trying to corrupt Joe and I. Hey, them wasn't even mad.

1:21:16Joe Johnson:You for sure using them. Nah, I ain't, Joe ain't using them. Hey, both of them you couldn't tell they were brand new. Well, that's your business though.

1:21:23Shannon Sharpe:That's your business. We ain't even got it. Yeah, that's one thing Joe and I don't do. Judge. Right. I been gay with my black robe. Judge, he not.

1:21:33Joe Johnson:Yeah, I'm really not one that really worries about the outside noise, especially when to come to judging. I just thought, as a team, as a family that we are, why not I introduce some things so y 'all can improve y 'all prior life? That's all. That's great. I'm good. My life is good. I'm not sure where y 'all went wrong and thinking it was something I was doing. I was just trying to help y 'all. But what make you think we need help, though? How you know what we got going on? Hey, Joe, I can just look at you and tell, Joe. You're not where you need to be. That's all. What do you mean?

1:22:06Shannon Sharpe:I buy that, boy, I might not be where I need to be, but I'm where I want to be. I ain't no farther ahead. I ain't too far behind. I'm right where I need to be. I understand. I understand. No walker.

1:22:20Joe Johnson:I understand, but there's always room for improvement. I don't care how old we are.

1:22:25Shannon Sharpe:You can go fast, but you ain't got to be in a hurry. You see what I'm saying, Joe? You can go fast, just don't be in a hurry. That joke will hurry up. You got to take your time, man. They call him Curtain. What? Oh, man. Yeah. That's the color color.

1:22:46Joe Johnson:I really ain't like that though, man. For real.

1:22:48Shannon Sharpe:Joe, he just like that. I already know it. He ain't fooling me. I already know how you move.

1:22:56Joe Johnson:Hey, you know it.

1:22:56Shannon Sharpe:Come on, Joe. Hey, but look, Ocho, I don't judge you. They don't make you no bad brother.

1:23:00Joe Johnson:You know what I mean? Come on, man. I know. Hey, but listen, Joe, you know I'm not one that runs away from being judged. Joe, you know, I'm willing to take mine on the head and stand 10 toes on whatever it is. Whatever it is, I align with that. I align with that, so I stand on that. But I'm just saying, what y 'all talk about, it's just more of a character trying to create content and just be - I got him a jacket.

1:23:24Shannon Sharpe:The new nightcap jacket is going to have much on the back of you. Oh, man. Hey, hey. Yeah, it don't owe you. Hey, I can't wear that in public, huh? Yeah, you can. That might be your last name. Hey, man, listen. Ocho. My last name's not. Think about the guy in Toronto. What's his last name? Grady. Dick. Yeah. Oh. So he went on the back of his jersey?

1:23:50Joe Johnson:Nah. You know Cambodia ain't going for that. That you a munch?

1:23:54Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, she know you a munch? What do you mean? Yeah.

1:23:58Joe Johnson:I'm really not because I ain't really never done what y 'all think I done. I just be talking. Well, I know you motorboding.

1:24:05Shannon Sharpe:I already know you over that motorboat I already know I know you yeah hey that joke will be in the gym he say he be lifting two and a half pounds with his tongue I said what that's it man that joke hey that's it man I hope you got the strongest tongue get his book on world record hey I'm not sure strongest tongue ever recorded

1:24:29Joe Johnson:Chad Ocho Seco Johnson Liberty City I'm not sure what things went left and y 'all feel I'm this. Listen. Mucho Cinco. Yeah, yeah. When I was. I just got to say it too.

1:24:41Shannon Sharpe:Y 'all don't do no lying. Please don't lie. Don't do that. Don't do that. I had a dude stop me in the airport while I was leaving Vegas and he broke it down to me between one, two, and three. Well, hell, what he told me I already knew though. You know what I mean? And, excuse me. Ocho, he had you one. He said simply. What? You won. He said simply. I'm talking about a man came up to me, broke it all the way down. He said simply the fact that, you know, Ocho bring all these gadgets, this, that, and the third. I'm like, yeah, you got a point. Then this, that, and the third. But then he was like, but I don't know though.

1:25:17Shannon Sharpe:Ocho kind of won too because, you know, that boy there, you know, he got something under his belt. You feel what I'm saying? So I kind of understood where he was coming from. He told me. He said, man, you down in like the fourth or the fifth spot. And I kind of felt that. You know what I mean? Like, ah, ah, ah. Man, now your homeboy told you that. What? Now, this is a stranger in the airport told me that.

1:25:39Joe Johnson:Nah, it's not. You know what? Hey, he took too long to explain that, so I know you know.

1:25:43Shannon Sharpe:I swear I ain't lying. I ain't lying, man. I wouldn't make. Hey, look. I ain't going to tell no lie to you because it's sound fly to you. Y 'all know I'm going to keep it 100. Chad know I'm going to keep it 100. Hell, y 'all fight for first. Chad know you. Chad know you. Them quiet ones. What did they say about them quiet ones, Ocho? Hey, they the worst ones. You hear me? Worst ones. They the worst ones. That's them preacher kids. The preacher kids. They the worst one. Although, you said your granddad was in the church, right? I said she was a lead singer in the choir. I ain't saying nothing about her.

1:26:14Shannon Sharpe:What was your granddad? Was he a deacon? My granddad was a deacon. Yeah, he was a deacon. Oh, yeah. Boy, look at him.

1:26:20Joe Johnson:Boy, the deacon. Yeah. You got to watch him. You got to watch him. Hey, they're pulling the wood over your eyes. You don't know no better. You don't know no better. him. But I've been paying attention. I've been watching Joe. I've been watching the way Joe move and try to act like... And I can see his eye. I can see the twinkle in his eye when I bring some of them toys on here sometimes.

1:26:40Shannon Sharpe:Oh, man.

1:26:40Joe Johnson:He tried to fight it, but I could read his body language. Hey, I could read his body language. Ask him questions. What does that do? Where does it go? Is it for me? Is it for her?

1:26:50Shannon Sharpe:I have to ask for the chat.

1:26:51Joe Johnson:Because we don't...

1:26:53Shannon Sharpe:Oh, man. Come on, man. I don't mean knowing. I don't mean knowing. So if I don't ask, so now he's representing for the chat. Now he the lawyer for the chat. He the spokesman for the chat, Ocho. It's like being in class and the teacher explaining something and I don't never raise my hand and tell him, man, I don't understand what you're talking about. Can you break it down for me? Same thing with you. Some of the stuff that you bring on here, Ocho, I had never seen in person before. You hear me? So I had to ask questions. Ocho, he ain't seen them before because they old. Joe got that new stuff.

1:27:23Shannon Sharpe:Oh, here he go. Yeah, he got that new stuff. Here he go. I like that. Yeah. Hey, listen, listen, listen. I like that. After this, you know, me and baby, we might play a little football, a little hut hut. You know what I'm saying? A little hut hut. A little hut hut. A little hut hut. A little hut hut. A little hut hut. Hey, Joe. Hey, Ocho. Huh? That's Shilman. The Eagles landed. The Shilman. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Oh yeah, he got a given.

1:27:52Joe Johnson:Hey, holla at your boy. Howlla at your boy. Hey, holla at your boy. I get back home Monday. You need a shipment too? Huh? You need a shipment? I mean, yeah, I can use it. I can use it, you know. Hey, rearrange a little furniture.

1:28:09Shannon Sharpe:Man, you be taking too many. You can't take too many.

1:28:11Joe Johnson:Mine came next day. I only did that in the beginning, huh?

1:28:16Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. You know, first impressions are everything. Yeah. Huh?

1:28:23Joe Johnson:First impressions are everything. So I wanted to make sure I had backup in my system. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That ain't nothing like the first one.

1:28:31Shannon Sharpe:Like, good Lord.

1:28:33Joe Johnson:You trying to show out. Boy trying to show out. I sat with her at the hospital. What? Are you sure? I sat with her at the hospital. I know she was. Cambodia. Hey, you got to chill. You got to chill. You got to chill. I'm just saying, hey, listen. I was in the hospital. She ain't left my side since. Yeah.

1:28:58Shannon Sharpe:I'm telling you, hey, Chad, y 'all better get on them sparks. I'm telling you, man. I promise you. They good as appetite. I'll tell you what. Hey, well, you ain't going to be able to get rid of. I'm going to tell you that. You ain't going to be able to get rid of. Well, it's been two years

1:29:16Joe Johnson:now.

1:29:17Shannon Sharpe:You hear me? Hey, man, hey. Whatever you feed a cat. Whatever you feed it. You'll never get rid of him. You can shoot him all you want to. Once you're the thought of a morsel, get off this point. Shoot. Get on out of here. Hey, you come outside, and next thing you know, you rub it up against your leg. Wow. Wow. Nah, damn, nah. You got to leave here. That's how it go. That's how it go. Yeah. Yeah, I tell you. Woo. We just try to get you a little. This chair hard as hell. Vanderbilt defeats NC State 35-31 in a stunner. NC State held a 31-28 lead on the roll with six seconds remaining and faced fourth down while backed up at the five-yard line.

1:30:05Shannon Sharpe:Wolfpack quarterback C.J. Bailey attempted to secure the win by scrambling and running out the clock, but fumbled the football in the end zone, and Vanderbilt recovered the ball for a walk-off touchdown to win the game. I've never seen nothing like that. I've never seen anything like it either. my thing was is that you run around and you run out the back of the end zone you put him in the show you say look here get up on the center because you're at the 5 yard line you take the ball by the time you get to the end zone run right out the back of the end zone that's it that's all you gotta do Joe I don't know what I don't know he panicked bro you can't do coach did you explain to him we're up 3 We take the safety.

1:30:51Shannon Sharpe:We're still up one. The only way we lose this ball game, we fumble this ball in the end zone, and they recover it. That's one in a trillion something happened, and it happened. Damn. My question is, Coach, did you let him? What was the plan? They couldn't. You know, if you get hit, Ocho, especially if it's unexpected, anything can happen. That's why they tell you, step out of the end zone. Don't take no chances. I was, I'm like, when they showed it, I was like, I know, I know this dude, I know this young man did not do what I think he did. He did it. But that's why I put that on the coach. Hold on, hold on.

1:31:34Shannon Sharpe:Hey, CJ Bailey, he going, okay, Ocho, it's going to be hard for that young man to come back from this. That's tough. That's a hell of a way to lose a game, bro.

1:31:44Joe Johnson:Big time. I've never seen nothing like that.

1:31:48Shannon Sharpe:I've never seen a game lost like that either, Ocho. Damn. Hmm. Well, he just took D.O. off the hook. You remember when D.O. ran out the back of the end of Ocho? Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Thought he was getting away from Jared Allen.

1:32:02Joe Johnson:When he was with Detroit, yeah.

1:32:04Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. This right here was the name. I remember that. Damn. That's on the coach. Coach, you got to explain to him. Son, take the ball in the center. You don't think they told him that, huh?

1:32:24Shannon Sharpe:Well, I want to hear what the coach had to say. I don't know. I don't think so. Because he didn't look like he didn't try to run out of the end zone. Damn. He just run out of the back of the end zone. Coach Belichick took a safety against us. He wouldn't even let the point of touch the ball. He had the short, he had the long snapper, snappy, and he hit the bottom of the upright. He didn't want to take a chance.

1:32:55Shannon Sharpe:I've never in all my years, and I've been watching the game of football for a very long time, probably longer than some of these people that's been alive in the chat. I've never seen a game end like that, Ocho. Hey. So the intentional safety strategy, that's just too risky to be doing at the end of a game like that so I think the thing is they didn't want to take a chance get it blocked recover before it turns down but here's the thing Joe I tell you what you do you take the quarterback and you say son throw the ball as high and as far as you can out of bounds by the time it lands the game's over it's only 5-6 seconds on the clock Joe so by the time you I would take two steps and throw this ball.

1:33:41Shannon Sharpe:A wide receiver, take off running. We're going to throw the ball over your head out of bounds.

1:33:47Joe Johnson:That's crazy. That's a horrible way to lose, especially when you think you have the game. Matter of fact, no, you know you have the game won. Understand, all I got to do is just kill the clock.

1:33:58Shannon Sharpe:That's it.

1:33:59Joe Johnson:And the quarterback, he had to panic because most of the time, in a situation like that, the first thing you do is you curl up with the ball. How do you even let the ball get out your hands when you should? See, now there's another reason why you should be coaching because this wouldn't happen.

1:34:14Shannon Sharpe:Because he would have told him I was dumb before he ran out there. Look.

1:34:19Joe Johnson:Hey, you would have told him. Yeah. Situational awareness.

1:34:26Shannon Sharpe:All he got to do is throw the ball. It's high. Because guess what? Even they get you for intentional ground. And guess what, Ocho? It's a safety. And you're still. You win the game.

1:34:42Man, I am so sorry this happened to you, CJ, but I don't really know what else to tell you.

1:34:52Shannon Sharpe:You got the game won. You're on the road in a hostile environment.
