In short
Nightcap Hour 1 mixes NBA talk (Luka Doncic vs Jayson Tatum pressure, Brad Stevens rumored Warriors-Steph Curry trade) with guest career stories and current coaching/AAU perspectives.
Guests and backgrounds
- Mike Bibby: Former NBA point guard; played for Sacramento Kings (including the C-Webb/Vlade Divac/Doug Christie era) and later the Atlanta Hawks; also discusses his college choice (Arizona) and later coaching.
- Josh “J Smooth” Schmiel: Co-host; former/ongoing basketball figure (mentions coaching AAU and his son).
- Jeremy Pargo: Former NBA guard; now coaches/plays in the Big3 (Ball Hogs), with Gary Payton; referenced as an MVP finalist.
Key claims
- Bibby says Kings teams were special because players genuinely liked each other and had high basketball IQ/chemistry.
- Bibby argues Kings vs Lakers battles could have changed his career (implying controversial outcomes).
- Coaching: AAU/college recruiting is harder due to one-year stints, transfers, and NIL/money pressures.
- Pressure debate: hosts argue Luka has more pressure than Tatum due to durability and Western Conference competition; others note Tatum already has a ring.
Notable examples
- Sacramento practice competition vs Scott Pollard/Bobby Jackson/Hedo Turkoglu.
- Atlanta home crowd energy during Celtics series.
- Big3 games referenced: Ball Hogs vs 305/Beasley/Lance Stevenson.
- Rumor: Brad Stevens reportedly reached out to the Warriors about trading for Steph Curry (package discussed but dismissed as unlikely).

4:24Welcome, welcome, welcome, welcome to another episode of nightcap. Please make sure you hit the like button, please make sure you hit the subscribe button and go subscribe to the nightcap podcast feed wherever you get your podcast from. I'm your host and it's the ISO takeover and y 'all know how we get down. My co-host, one of ATL's very own, straight out of Collipar. The thing that made him special, it wasn't just his athleticism at 6 '9", bruh. It was because he could guard every position, protect the rim, throw down some mean dunks, make plays in transition. You hear me? Lock something up. And one of the funniest dudes in the locker room and someone who I always feel like keep it real at all times, my boy, Josh Schmiel.
5:11What's happening, Jay Schmiel? What's good? Good, family. Hey, slow motion, man. Slow motion. Hey, hey. And I got another special guest here with me tonight. Hey, hey, hey. This boy here was something else. You hear me? I'm going to say he was here when he was well. Hey, my player partner. What's going on, baby? Biff. Hey, what's going on, man? I got two of my guys with me. Hey, look, before we start, I want to shout out my podcast, Straight Game Podcast. We've had Smooth on there already. Joe Johnson Jr. is hard to get a hold of on that motherfucker. We trying to get you on too, Joe. Shit, we're trying to get you on.
5:50Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey. Bill, Bill, timing is everything, brother. Smooth. Hey, hey. I'm going to come on there and talk some stuff with y 'all, man. We got Smooth on there too. We'll probably get both y 'all on there together too. Yeah, yeah, yeah. We all talk about some old times, man. You know what I'm talking about, Smooth? Yeah, I do. I definitely do. We had some good times, man. Look, I always tell this story, our story about our game of where, you know, when you run through your plays at the beginning of the... Like, we're going through our plays, you know what I mean? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
6:26So, like, if we're meeting there at 4 o 'clock, because we got... Yeah, I know what you mean. Look, go ahead. You know how we got a$100 tip? We got the$100 tip game that we're playing. Yeah. I remember Smooth. Smooth almost got us fucked up one time because the smooth shot it and just took off full speed and just pushed the motherfucker. Hey, hey, hey. So, hey, Chad. So, what Bill talking about is, so right before games, instead of us having shoot around in the morning, maybe we'll come in at about 4 o 'clock and we'll have a walkthrough. But the walkthrough, because we get there early, we'll start playing 21.
7:00But the 21 turned into something like when you was kids because if you get two tips, you're out. You know, you get one tip, it may take all your points. That's the second tip. You know what I mean? Man, we used to go so hard in the 21 before the warm-up. What? Remember the three tips? Remember we'd be running through our plays in practice. Remember? And the LD was like, man, y 'all do that shit after fucking practice. Man, y 'all don't do that shit during the... We was running our offense. Boom, fast break, coming back down. No one wanted to shoot that bitch. Everybody kept swinging and swinging until somebody shoot it.
7:34Tip the owl, owl tip it back to me, boom. you owe$300.
7:40Hey, hey, they were great times, bro. You know, I always tell people that Atlanta team, especially when we got you, Bill, when we got Jamal Crawford, hey, man, you boy was something else, man. You boy was something else. That's what's fun, man. Like I said, I come in there, I had to play a different role. You know, I was with everybody was young. You know, Josh coming out of high school, we had Marvin was young, chills. I mean, even playing with you, Joe, like you and me were the only people that really had playoff experience. So coming there, I knew my role was going to change. You know, I was playing with the guys.
8:16Even when I got traded there, I was like, damn, man, I want to go to Atlanta. And then all of a sudden I was like, shit, okay, this is a good spot for me to be because I kind of, I always tell people I played a Vlade Divac role coming there. You know what I mean? Like trying to bring everybody together. I knew my time was coming to a close soon, and I just tried to bring everybody together. I remember taking everybody to the mall and I made that rule. I remember I made that rule that said, whoever was with us at that time making the most money got to pay for dinner. Oh, that shit cut down so quick.
8:49The first day Joe was there, Joe was making the most money. So after that, Joe paid the first time. I didn't see Joe again. And it started trickling them. Smooth was gone. The next thing you know was me, Mario West, and somebody else. Y 'all motherfuckers left me with the bill, so I was spitting the bill now with two other guys. Hey, hey, hey, when y 'all think about those times, you know, Bill, before we traded for you to come to the Hawks, bro, you know, me being a huge fan of your game, obviously, Arizona and everything that you did in Sacramento. When you think about those Sacramento teams that you played on, bro, early in your career, what you think made those teams so special, Bill?
9:30I mean, obviously the chemistry y 'all had and, you know, the high IQ for the game, the way y 'all passed the ball, the way y 'all made the game easier for one another. What do you think? What was so special about those teams? We genuinely liked each other. You know what I mean? So that's why I tried to bring when I came to Atlanta. Like even we'd gamble on the plane, you know, we'd walk around on the plane, we'd go to dinner and stuff like that. I just wanted to make sure everybody would hang out with each other and really liked each other. You know, like us going to the mall, like, come on, everybody put your shit down.
10:03Let's go to the mall. We're going to hang out. Everybody just shoot the shit in a little bit. But that was the thing. Like, we competed, though. Like, when practice, that second squad that we used to have, like Scott Pollard, Bobby Jackson, Hito Turkoglu, they used to beat our ass in practice. You know what I mean? And so that used to get us ready as far as, like, okay, shit. We know that, like, if we don't start out good with how our plays, We knew Webb was the alpha dog on the team. We just knew coming in, like, we just had to make sure we show up when he needed us. Yeah, hey, man, it was fun watching you guys.
10:39It was fun playing against y 'all. I'll never forget, bro. I mean, from C-Webb to Vlade Divac to Doug Christie, those guys were hell of a passers and IQ through. And then you add you to that mix, bro. Y 'all were just a hell of a team. Think about those legendary Kings versus Lakers battles. Tell us a little bit about those battles, bro. Knowing what we know now. You know what I'm saying? Smooth. Knowing the history of the game. Y 'all may have been robbed a little bit. A little bit. Do you honestly – hold on, hold on, hold on. Do you honestly think it was really – Hell yeah. You seen that shit?
11:16Man, look. That's a whole – that could change my whole – that could have changed my whole career. You know what I'm saying? I was rolling at that point. Now, what if it looks like if I get – if we go to the finals, I get finals MVP? That's going to look a whole lot better on my resume than the shit I got now. Oh, no. Listen, Bibb, I ain't going to lie to you. Y 'all probably should have had one, boy. Y 'all ain't. No, no, no, no. Because y 'all had a whip. Y 'all had a whip. I'm talking about, man, listen. I didn't think nobody could beat that Lakers, Kobe, and Shaq. But, bruh, when I tell y 'all pushing to the brink, obviously, under certain circumstances, maybe y 'all would have won it.
11:55But, man, that was a pleasure to watch. I was a young buck. I was just coming into the league in 0-1, bro. That was everything to me to see great basketball like that played at the highest level. Just to be a part of that, I think Shaq's the best big man to ever play the game. Kobe is top two for me. Just to be in those battles and going to LA and seeing all those movie stars and the guys that you look up to in the movies coming and cheering against you, knowing we had them beat. I couldn't ask for nothing else, man. But, like, I want to pump you guys up a little bit, too. You know what I mean?
12:29Coming to you guys, I mean, it was probably the easiest games that I have had to play. You know what I mean? Like, they always talk about my defense, how bad my defense was. But, shit, I didn't have to be good. You know what I mean? I got smooth back there. You know what I mean? So, that blocked out a lot of stuff. And, like, send screens for you, Joe. A lot of these guys, a lot of these point guards, I said the best. I thought I used to set the best screens. Oh, hold up, baby, baby, baby. Hold up. i've never in life even playing with nash marbury kenny anderson i played with some grace boy ain't nobody said no screen how you said the screen you hear me that boy ain't nothing but chess over there boy do so smooth what's wrong with the boy oh cheers all chairs he don't do number press when he go in the gym now he in the weight room like a combat hey hey hey he in the weight room and that boy gonna sit a mean scheme a mean screen i ain't gonna lie to you that's it but that's it no that no one ever wanted to switch you know i mean i always had i always had a little guy i mean so i set a screen and he was not he did not want none of you joe and he would joe have a wide open jump shot and whatever i mean even with smooth so i mean like even playing with you guys man it kind of changed my game too it's like you know i looked up and like atlanta was like atlanta and sacraments are two best places that i've been the two best teams i played on you know like i still talk to you guys.
13:51I still talk to Jamal when I see him. I saw AC Law a couple weekends ago. Hold on, hold on, hold on. That's saying a lot, bro. You played with the Heat with D-Wade and Braun. You went to New York. Look, man. You giving up love like that, bro? Yeah, I mean, that's the... I mean, being there and being with you guys, like, the most fun I had, like, as far as being on the court and playing basketball, like, that's the way I wanted to play. I got out with this all fast break. I mean, you can look at the highlights of me and Smooth. I was throwing that bitch from anywhere. I just took and just throw that shit up and I was going to get it and like playing with you Joe just know a guy that's going to get it and all I had to do was go find an open spot because they're going to double team you you know what I mean and I was like shit I just got knocked down the shot I want to say remember that bet we had remember I said Smooth not to shoot 10 threes all season remember we were just talking about that with Jeff the other day yeah yeah I think I shot about the 6th of them remember I was supposed to be an all-star game.
14:50Yeah, you should have been an all-star. He came there and was like, that wasn't the three. I didn't shoot the three. I said, smooth. I ain't keeping stats. You don't see the three after the game. He's like, I didn't shoot no three. He hasn't shoot no three. We had the most fun there, man, being there, being with you guys. And like Joe, I'm the only one that could stop you. I don't remember if you remember. Oh, man. Hold on, hold on. So right before the game, right before the buzzer by the sign, starting lineup, probably about the last five to six minutes, Me and Bia play one-on-one. Every game, we used to play one-on-one.
15:22Hey, Joe, hold on a second. My son just came in here. Look. Hey, what's up, bro? Hey, I remember when you was a little G, bro. How y 'all doing, man? Y 'all good? Hey, we good, man. Good to see you, bro. Keep doing your thing. I know you out there with POP. I appreciate that, man. Y 'all good to see y 'all, too. Yes, sir. Good to see you, too. Go tell our story, Joe. I'm the only person that can lock you up. So, me and Bibb used to play one-on-one before every game, bro. And it's like, you know, good, honest defense. He think he's the only one who used to lock me up. But we used to have some good battles, though, Bibb.
15:59Hey, because you know what? That shit used to get me going before the game. You know what I mean? It gets your juices flowing a little bit. You couldn't block shots, though. You couldn't. The rule was you couldn't block the shots, and you couldn't do anything. I used to hit him in the top of his head. We just played in the big three. I was fucking y 'all. Okay, let me guard my guard. I'm over there grabbing his arm and catching him and pulling his air. Hey, hey, hey, Chad. He talking about when we played in the big three and he was playing with the ghost ball and talking about let him guard me.
16:29Hey, hey, smooth. Hey, smooth. I was handing out buckets like they were skilled or whatever, man. Hey, man. You have something. You have something. He was killing him out there. I'm the only one that can stop him, man. I'm the only one that can stop him. Hey, hey, hey, listen. Hey, we had a hell of a time here, bro. Look, you know, Bill, before we traded for you, we wasn't in the playoffs yet that year. We end up making the A.C. with you, and we end up playing against the Boston Celtics, and we all know how that historic series. We couldn't. We weren't competing worth a damn in Boston, but in Atlanta, boy, that ass couldn't get no dub over here.
17:07You hear me? I'm trying to tell you. At least we had home now. Hey, hold on. Smooth. Smooth. Bill, no lie. I've never in my life seen Atlanta rocking like that, bro. Me neither, man. Me neither. And they done had some good teams. Trayden took them to the Eastern Conference Finals. I ain't never seen that building jumping like that. We had the highlight factory moving, man. Man. That was some good times, man. Hey. Oh, it was definitely, definitely a great time, bro. Oh, man. Come on, bro. Come on. I'm the only one that paid Mo. How crazy is this? Hey, you got to chill. I got to get my money back from Mo.
17:52Hey, you got to chill. Hey, we got to send one prayer up, bro, for a good friend of ours, man, Big J, bro. I know we had some great times with Big J. We had some great fun times. We all used to go ahead, Smooth, say it again. I said RIP to the big fella. Big RB. Oh, man. And, oh, man, we used to have some great time. I tell cats all the time how he used to play cards with us, too. Me, it used to be me, Bibb, Josh, and Big J. And we cranking jokes on each other and everything. And if I had a little shindig at the crib, Big J was the first one to show up, bro. So I actually, not accidentally, but I ran into him at an Atlanta Hawks game last season, bro.
18:33I don't know if he had already got diagnosed, but, you know, he didn't say nothing about it. and me and him sat there and chopped it up for probably about 10 minutes. It was a game. I can't remember what game it was. And I hadn't seen him since, bro. And then when I heard the news, I was like, damn. And it took me back to all those memories we had on the plane, the bus rides. Because at the end of the day, y 'all know, bro, once we stopped playing professional, that's the one thing that you really missed, that camaraderie that you had with a cat, me, Josh, you know, what we talking on the plane, the bus playing cards.
19:04And it just made me think back how, man, life is short, bro. but big j was a great dude he was a great real quiet but who gave him the name big rv i think you did you gave everybody a nickname right you hey smooth then you said he was a bad influence bro bad influence man man talk all them alligator hands remember he big jay saying You used to have that lotion on. You was getting on his head and skin. You grabbed the cars like that, man. Yeah, yeah, yeah. They was about to bleed. They were so dry. Hey, hey, hey. That was crazy. Hey, them were days, bro. Them were days. Man, we had some fun. That was one of the best times I had, man.
19:48Like I said, like, no matter what team I played, but I put with you guys and Sacramento up there, man. It was just fun times. it was basketball. You know what I mean? Like, when I went to New York, that shit, my career was over, man. I didn't want to, I ain't going to lie to you. I was done playing. Woody was like, Mike, come play one more seat. I'm like, Woody, I'm done, man. He was like, he's like, just come play. I said, Woody, I am done. So like, when I got there, I had no intention of playing no games. I'm not going to lie to you. So when I got there, I was like, man, I'm working out. Okay, you know, I'm going to try.
20:21I was out there trying, but I just didn't have it in me no more. I was like, in the games, would be like, you want to play today? I was like, nah, Woody, I'm cool. Just leave me over here. Don't feel like you need to play me, Woody. I worked out already. Then, you know, there'll be some games, like, four minutes left. Like, you want to play? Yeah, put me in. Let me go here and just run a little bit. So, I mean, I was done already, but, I mean, it wasn't the same as with you guys and coming there. Like, going to you guys, I felt like I had a little bit left in the tank. You know what I mean? Coming there and just playing, okay, I'm the older guy on the team.
20:52Let me try to see if I can rejuvenate these guys and, you know, get them to play and we kind of got in a fast-paced play and we just played i mean in the show like it showed um just the talents that you guys had and for me to be like an old wheel to come in and just kind of push you guys along uh you know it made my time like i said that was one of the best times of my career being around with y 'all yeah hey we appreciate that bro we had a great time not not only just playing on the court but off the court as well life was great hey let's pivot a little bit to you coaching. I see you coaching now.

I can clear my search history, but I can never unsee that. Don't go down the rabbit hole. Amazon Health AI gets you the right care fast. Health care just got less painful. What's that been like? We got Smooth, Smooth, you know, Smooth coaching his AAU team, coaching his son. He thinking about getting into coaching. What's the do's and don'ts, Bill? I mean, it's good. It's not as easy as people think. You know, you got to come in.
24:39It's harder now because, you know, these kids are there for one year and they leave after one year. So you don't get, like, the same things, Joe. Like, smooth and go to college. So smooth and don't really understand playing two or three years with a guy and keeping – even as a coach, having a guy. Like we kept five kids this past year from the last team. And just to show that just the extra year with us is life-changing, man. Like you get kids that want to transfer out now after one year. And it's hard when you're bringing, you know, last year we had 15 new guys. And it was like trying to put all these 15 guys together and try to put all these attitudes and the mindsets together is tough, man.
25:22And it's not the same as when we were growing up to where, you know, my main goal is to get to the NBA. These kids are bypassing college, are bypassing the NBA now to stay in college. Hey, so let me ask you this. So has it changed since you've been coaching? Has it changed the way you've looked at the game of basketball or how you perceive it now? Because it's played totally different now, Big. Because think about it. When you came into the league, bro, in 98, what was it? Damn, 98. Hey, listen, think about it. Bigs wasn't shooting threes. If you're playing with Webb and DeVos, hell, they ain't never shot no threes in their life.
Read the full transcript
25:59You know what I mean? Maybe Webb later in his career when he really – but nowadays, hell, if you can't shoot the three, you can't play. I mean, there's a lot of people – I mean, like, you got to have – in college, you got to have at least one big guy that could play in the post with the rebounds or he could cause double-team steals. But, like, when I was playing, it was inside out. You know what I mean? I was on my team. Yeah. My team, I was the third, I was the third threat because I had Sharif with his back to the basket, Country with his back to the basket, and hopefully they get double team and pass it out to me so I can make something happen.
26:32But see, I mean, but that's the way it was back then. You know, it's changing now where you get one guy now, but now everybody just wants to shoot threes. And I mean, the game's changed, but that's the way it is. Like, I don't know how it is for you, Smooth, but being at that, being at the high school level, I was there for a few years, but I mean, coming to NIL now I think if NIL was there when I was playing I probably wouldn't have made it where I was at today because everybody coming like we have GMs but I deal with those guys and the money and figure if they're worthy of the money that they get because you look at these guys, these guys are averaging 2-2 and we starting at$750 ,000 you know what I mean?
27:12You're averaging 2-2 and I mean it just you know what I mean? So, hey, so does it take the loyalty out the game now? Meaning, you know, back when we was in school, Bib, you couldn't just transfer and go play right away. Now, hell, you know, they're changing teams like they're changing draws. Five teams in five years. I mean, how as a coach, I mean, how do you police a guy now? How do you stay on the guy? How do you hold him accountable without him feeling the way and be like, man, you know what, Bib, I'm tripping. I'm going to go over here to Tennessee or Arkansas somewhere. But my thing is, like, we're a smaller school, Joe, So it's kind of like I want these guys to move on.
27:49You know what I mean? We don't have the$6,$7 million for you to play here. As much as I – I mean, it's going to look good on me if we develop you and get you to those schools. It's going to look good on our staff. It's going to look good on me. But my thing is, like, you know, coming to a place like us, we're smaller. We don't have as much money as the other schools. So my thing is, you know, get you a year or two here. You know, Smooth, I talked to you about it, too. as well get you a year here instead of going to like another prep school or something like that get you a year at sac state or and uh work your way up now you get play there for a year or two now you show these guys like hey look i developed i can do this and now i'm at that level and i want to push these guys i want to push these guys to that next level to where it's like um go make your money you know it's all about money go make your money i had this one kid that wanted to come back to school i'm not gonna say his name wanted to come back to school love him to death, would it be selfish for me to try to keep him?
28:47You know what I mean? But the money in college is outrageous right now. It would be more than what he's making him pro. So, I mean, I want these kids to be pro. I want them to fulfill their dream. I want them to go be pros. Hey, is that like, what's one of the biggest lessons you try to get to these young guys, bro? Look, because when they get to you, Bill, some of them probably already think they got it figured out. You know what I mean? What's one of the biggest lessons you try to get? Just work hard, man. This shit ain't promised to you. I just saw somebody, I saw Stack talking about today, 1 % make the NBA.
29:19You know what I mean? It's not going to be for everybody. And everybody thinks that they're going to make it. And it's not necessarily going to have that, especially if you don't put the work in. You got God. And think about it. Smooth, think about this. Bro, it's only 450 players in the NBA every year. Not just this year, not just last year. You know what I mean? So you got to understand, bro, Just as much as we geeked about, you know, the top prospects that's coming into the NBA now, hell, there's got to be some leaving. Sure. You know what I mean? So I think it's so prestige, bro, because you're right, Bibb.
29:58It's only a 1 % of us, bro. Think about the millions of people who want to play in the NBA. And hell, it ain't been like 5 ,000 people ever. So to even be in that conversation, to even be in that fraternity, bro, it's a blessing. And the shit they need, like the people that look at all the glamour, the shit they need. I work my ass off. You know what I mean? I ain't playing with you, Joe. I was sitting there shooting shots in a gym that had two baskets and they were playing pickup, and I'm shooting my shots in between of them. You know what I mean? So I'm there for four or five hours just getting shots up.
30:27You know what I mean? Hey, so you do shooting games? You play one-on-one with them? That's what you got to be at the track. You know what? I got Gloves on with me, right? Oh, you got Gloves on? Yes, Gloves on with us. It's the second year with us. So I have to get on the court because we had a lot of injuries last year. So I got on the court. You know, I'm out there just, you know, I'm out there. I'm out there. You know what I mean? So I'm almost 50 years old. He got the ball. We're playing. It was like a three-on-three break coming back, right? So I seen his eyes light up, right? So he talking about he clearing out.
31:01He going to – he started coming at me full speed. I said, yeah, come on. He went up. I fouled the shit out of him. I called the team and I said, look, I'm out here. Don't mean y 'all just start attacking me, okay? I'm out here just trying to fill a body. I'm going to foul this shit out y 'all. Y 'all come at me. I'm going to let y 'all know that right now. We ain't doing that shit in here. Hey, hey, hey, you think kids nowadays appreciate the fundamentals of the game, bro? You know, think about this, Bill. smooth when we were coming up guys one step back and side stepping euro it wasn't none of that it was basic basketball you may have had a little flair to your game but we practiced the fundamentals not only did we practice it we mastered the fundamentals here i know me me coming up like the first thing i could do was handle the rock you know knowing how to play the game playing the right way i never got into it to where i was just a guy who you go recruit and give him 300 grand to play with us in this tournament.
32:03You know what I mean? Do y 'all think the fundamentals is gone from today's game? Go ahead, Smooth. Yeah, absolutely. Guys want to be skill-based, but this is what I was talking about a few days ago about guys wanting to skip steps. You know what I'm saying? I mean, I didn't automatically jump off the porch knowing how to do all kinds of stuff. I had to really put the work in in the gym in order to kind of like, first of all, we didn't have trainers growing up. So we played like we was, like you said, you were shooting in between. Like, Bib, you said you were shooting in between guys running up and down, grown men running up and down.
32:42You just trying to get your shots up in between it. And that's just like we played. We grew up with an imagination. You know what I'm saying? And we cater to the imagination of what we wanted to do as far as basketball. We watched the game of basketball. A lot of these guys don't even watch the game. that's why you see a lot of these kids making the wrong decision when it comes to going to colleges because they're just picking these names because that's what they dreamed of and heard but they're not watching like how do they how are they catering to my position right saying like how does it is this school really catering to the position that's going to help me get to the next level whatever i want to get to as far as basketball but they definitely skip steps a lot It's a lot of guys that are, you know, every time I go out there with my son or he's training with somebody, I'm like, look, man, before you do anything, get your form shots up.
33:38Yep. Same because, you know, that's 70 max right there if you just do it. That's how we start practice every day, smooth with form shots, 50 form shots. Yeah, absolutely. And then, you know, people take, you know, when we do have practice, you know, I'm three-man weaving. I'm three on two, two on one. Yeah, yeah. Like, guys got to know how to convert in those situations during the game. But how do you know if the coach is not really catering to that and they're catering to whatever the player wants because they're afraid the player's going to leave? Right, right, right. I think that's the hardest thing to juggle nowadays, bro.
34:12Yeah, for sure. I mean, so I think it's hard being a coach, Bib. And, you know, I ain't going to lie, I enjoy seeing you over there. Appreciate it. And I know them kids, boy, they giving you – I know they giving you everything, you know what I mean? but if you could give one piece of advice that every young point guard currently chasing that NBA dream, man I want to make it to the NBA. Just work hard man, like my thing is like you could be the greatest in the world but if you don't put that work in nothing's going to come into play. Like you got guys that are working at their craft, they're pros now.
34:46Like these college kids are pros now we pay you to play. There should be nothing else that you're doing besides being in the gym. and that's the biggest thing that got me over the hump because when I was in high school, I was the number one point guard in the country and in high school, I really didn't really do much. I played at the park. I played. There was no workouts. There was no workouts. Hold on, hold on. We're going to get you out of here in a few minutes, but you said you played. Your dad played in the NBA. You know what I mean? You was around the game as a kid. Like you say, growing up, all we did was play.
35:25We didn't have trainers, bro. Like, how did you keep that motivation to continue to play? Like, man, I'm going to make a name for myself. I know I'm Michael Henry Bibby. Yeah. Yeah. No, think about that because I always wonder, bro, and I kind of watch from admiration as far as guys who play in the NBA and their kids happen to make it. And, you know, whether it's past what they've done or just making it alone. I know it's tough bro because you got to have a different type of mentality. Yeah my thing was different like I grew up a little bit without my dad. My dad wasn't really around so like he was coaching stuff.
36:03Everybody used to like Henry Bibi's son he wasn't really around. He was out coaching so he was in Venezuela, Puerto Rico so he was out there coaching as I was growing up. So like he saw me play one game in high school. I still think they gave him the Southern California job to try to get me You know what I mean? Because he came to me. He's like, yeah, you want to play for your dad? You come average 40 over here. I'm like, man, I'm going to Arizona. So, I mean. Damn, you told him. Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. So, just like on He Got Game when Denzel Washington got out to get Ray Allen. Hold on, man.
36:36You went against Pops. Yeah, I had to. You said, damn there, damn there, Pops. I'm going over there. Yes, I'm going to Arizona, man. I mean, because I knew what Arizona did for the guards. They put guards in the NBA. My goal was being the NBA. Out of USC, I really didn't know any guys that went to the league like that. So I was with Arizona. I mean, Damon Stoddard, my Sean Elliott, Khalid Reeves, Steve Kerr. I mean, it was just going all the way down the line. I was like, okay, Coach Olsen is a mastermind. I want to go be there and be close to home. My main thing is I want to be close to home, man.
37:06I was an hour, 15-minute drive, and I could drive home on the weekend, and I was cool with that. All right, one more question. We're going to get you out of here. We appreciate you for joining us on Nightcap for the ISO takeover. Me and my boy, J Smooth. One more question. It said, how come Fat Joe say you almost beat him up? Joe putting a lot on it, man. So, look. So, Joe got like 15 people at my house. So, Joe come to the house, right? So, Joe gave me a pair of DJ Khaled. So, you know, okay, Joe, you're here. Go ahead, pick a shoe. Grab a shoe. Grab what you want. But he's in my good closet, though.
37:43Like my closet with, like this, you know, my good closet. So I'm going to go ahead and go and pick. So, you know, I'm drinking a little bit, whatever. So I turn around, like five of his guys got like only, each hand they got one, the shoe I got one of. So I'm like, I said, Joe, you can't take all five, man. That's it. I said, man, just go ahead and pick one. Pick one that you want, and then I'll get you rolling with one. So he's looking at him. and I'm looking like, please don't pick those. Please don't pick those. And he was like, I'm going to go with these. I said, damn, it's the only one made.
38:24When I was supposed to be an all-star in Sacramento, Mike Torres, shout out to Mike Torres, he made a shoe for me. The Jordan 9 Lowe's with the silver patent leather. And he picked those. So if you ever see Joe with those shoes, I think there's one of those made, man. And I didn't rough him up. You let him get out of there with him? I didn't rough him up. And the crazy thing was, and I told him, I was like, hey, you know what? It's all good. Because my daughter was singing at the time. And so I was like, just do this for me, Joe. Just get on a song with her so she could kind of get herself going.
38:59And he was like, no problem. We'll write it for her. We'll get her in the studio. A week later, my daughter was like, Dad, I don't want to do it. I was like, man, come on. She was nervous. But then like three weeks passed And she was like Dad I want to do it I said Mia I already told him That you didn't want to do it It's out the window So I can't do it But I didn't rough him up He putting a lot on He putting 10 on the roughing up Okay A.B. appreciate it bro Appreciate you for joining us on Night Gals I'm having both of y 'all on On my straight game podcast So when I get one Come on Joe I ain't never heard you I ain't never seen you answer the phone So quick today I ain't Smooth, that shit rang once.
39:41I be telling people, I told you, but yeah, but I don't answer that phone. Smooth, that shit rang once. I was like, I took the phone to see if they hung up. It'd be like, hey, you got to chill. Hey, Bill, you got to chill. Hey, Bill, appreciate you, bro. See y 'all, love y 'all to death, man. All right, y 'all. Yes, sir, love, bro. Hey, Smoothie. What's up, big dog? Boy, I got some news you could use over here. You hear me? Talk to me. Check this out. Both Luka Doncic and Jason Tatum lost their superstar co-host. This summer. Who's under the most pressure next season? Man. Luka and JT. Luka lost LeBron.
40:32JT lost JB. I think Jason Tatum for sure coming off of that Achilles injury. And then people wanting to see if he can prove it without JB being on the team. Absolutely. You know, he got to prove to see. He got to prove and let people know that the organization made the right decision by keeping him as far as their franchise player and letting JB go. So we got to see it. I mean, JB's been super healthy.

44:01There's no question too embarrassing for Amazon Health AI. Chat your symptoms and get virtual care 24-7. Healthcare just got less painful. He's played a lot of games. Yeah. I've done some things for that organization when I'm a championship, too. So, and he was conference and finals MVP. So, him being that. So, you think it's Tatum? I definitely think it's Tatum. I think it's Luka. I'm going to tell you why. Talk to me. First off, he playing for the Los Angeles Lakers, partner. Yeah. Big time. You hear me? Both of them big time. Yeah, yeah. Both of them big time. But, you know, L.A. L.A. hit a little different out there, bro.
44:47You know what I mean? He ain't got Bruin. We know the weight, you know, playing with LeBron. We know how that is. And I just feel like with him vouching for Austin Rees to still be around, to get paid, saying that he don't want no other free agent outside of Austin Rees. Yeah, man. That man got a lot of pressure. Hey, hey, hey, smooth. Look, you got to think about it. In the Western Conference, bro, it's not only going to be top heavy, but, bro, you got to look at the teams. I mean, when I say top heavy, I'm thinking Spurs, OKC. than you Denver, Houston. You know what I mean? Like, hey man, the Lakers finished.
45:24I think they were third. I think they were three seed this past season and the post season. So I definitely think it's Luka, bro. He gonna have to really show up and show out. He gonna have to show us that he's durable enough to be able to make it through a full season, you know and play in the post season with extensive minutes and putting on the show. I think it's Luka by far. I ain't gonna lie to you. And look, and think about this. He done made it to the Western Conference Finals by himself, so I don't think the pressure's too much on him. He done did it before with a different organization.
45:56Hey, Tatum already got one. He did it with Dallas by himself. I'm talking about Luka did, but Tatum hasn't done it by himself. He ain't done it by himself, but he got a ring already. What I'm saying is Luka... He got one with JB, though. Yeah, I know, but he is on his resume. You know what I mean? Luka ain't got none on his resume. He played in the Finals, obviously, against the Celtics, but he ain't got no chip. You play for the Lakers, Smule, if you him, if you're supposed to be that guy in an LA uniform, you're supposed to bring a title, bro. Yeah, but the Lakers ain't really been, they ain't been that good lately, though.
46:27They just been solid. I mean, when LeBron was there, they had a good stint, but I'm saying, if LeBron didn't go to the Lakers and he went somewhere else, do they even win that championship that they got? Nah, not if they ain't got Bron - I know, I know. Before LeBron was there, they had, look who they had. It was bad. It was bad. It was bad, bro. It was bad. It was bad. We talking about the LA Lakers now. They couldn't even beat the clip. It was the clip show for a minute. Yeah, it was bad, bro. Long time. Oh, yeah, yeah, you're right. He revamped it a little. You know, he revamped it a lot, for real, for real.
47:08Yeah, no, no. I think Bron did his one-two when he got there. At the end of the day, you come in and win a chip. He won a chip in the bubble. Obviously, people say it's an astrobiot. I don't put no astrobiot, because, hell, we were all going by the same rules. You hear me? So, it is what it is. They go down in history books. Him and AD brought one home. And it was a good run with Brian in L.A. I think he's going to bring that same type of – to Philly and change the trajectory as far as – because I don't think they won a title smooth in Philly. and it probably hell if the knicks was 50 some years 53 years the sixes it ain't that it probably ain't that long but it's been a minute bro been a minute since it's been a minute something like that right yeah hey check this out brad stevens has reportedly reached out to the warriors to discuss a potential trade for steph curry check this out smooth check this out check this out that though huh he in boston i told you hey hold on hold on hold on we're gonna get back to that hey there you go my guy what's up my guy my guy jenner jeremy pargo who been uh uh uh lighting it up in the big three bro i seen you you're in the final list as far as mvp i watched the whole game the other day yesterday to be exact uh he's playing for the ball halls led by jeremy pargo and gary Payton and I watched y 'all play against 305 against Beasley and Lance Stevenson.
48:42Hey, bro. I know me and you talk, we talk on a regular. This is like a real conversation, Smooth. You know what I'm talking about? Absolutely. We talk about the game. We break it down. But I had to get you on here tonight. Appreciate you for joining the nightcap. The ISO take over me and my boy Smooth. Hey, man. Hey, man. Come on, man. Tell us what's going on. I appreciate you boys having me, but you just talking about Brad Stevens called for Steph. Yeah. Come on. Hold on. Hold on. Listen, check this out, Jeremy. I told I told you that I did not say. Hold on. Hold on. Brad Stevenson has reportedly reached out to the Warriors to discuss a potential trade with Stephon Curry proposed proposed trade package out.
49:21Hit me out now. It could last Steph Curry. It says Celtics receive Steph Curry. Oh, we don't have in here who they who they going to trade. They ain't got enough on them. Oh, oh, oh, oh. Paul George, Sam Houser, two first-round picks. Yeah. Steph and Tatum. What we talking about? It ain't happening. Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on. How you figure it ain't happening? You think they're going to stay taking that? Yeah, because I think. Trying to rebuild. Jeremy, what else are they going to do, Jeremy? They in the wild, wild west. What else are they going to do? They in the wild, wild west. They just re-signed Dre at a big deal.
49:59You're not moving. They gave him a one-year deal, though. Exactly. so it ain't going nowhere this year they playing ball this year they basically saying thank you here's your severance yeah
50:14hold on y 'all can't see Steph being traded to Boston I can see it bro remember I said you said you wanted to see Miami I said Boston no I don't see it at all you don't see it at all it's not enough Okay, okay. Hypothetically speaking, let's say it does happen. Okay. Yeah, I got my head to the streets. I kind of know a little something. That's all I'm saying. You know what I'm saying? Let's say it does happen. They trade Paul George, Sam Hauser, two first-round picks. Tatum and Steph. What y 'all think? What did it look like? Man, the East, what the East doing? They trying to load up over there, ain't they?
50:52Man, that East is deep, boy. That East is deep, but I don't see them. No, no, no. That's not enough to win the East. Now, when you say Miami, that's different. Hold on, you say it's not enough to win the East? Don't y 'all know they did go get Mitchell Robinson? Y 'all know that, right? Yeah. So they got some rim protection. They got some rim protection. Tatum going to come back revived because, you know, he heard all the rummings about JB, and they should be trading him instead of JB. So he going to come back. He going to come back ready to play. You mean, tell me, if they can some way, somehow go get Stephon Curry, that little beige brother out there in San Francisco, You mean tell me that don't make them no.
51:34They make them a contender for sure. That's a hell of a contender, but it ain't enough around that to win. Like you going against four dudes that just average 23 and up. I think Brown's at 23. Everybody else is at 28, 27. That is crazy over there. Hey, listen, I don't know about y 'all, but I like the movement in the NBA. I like seeing guys, especially our stars, especially the ones who are probably going to be gone in another five years or so the lebrons the katies the steps even westbrook at times you know i'm saying like i like to see these guys move around i i mean i know we talk about cats always being loyal playing with one team but yeah man let's step go and get up out of there man you know come on to the eastern conference i i wouldn't mind seeing that's all i'm saying it's been reported so hell this guy had to come from somewhere that's for sure if they blow that thing up and go to the state though this was the year.
52:26I don't think they're going to do it this year. Next year, maybe. It could be possible, Jeremy. It could be possible. Why not get started early, bro? It was the year. If they did it this year, then I would understand it, for sure. What I'm saying is how many years is left on Jimmy Butler's deal? Two or three. Because he re-upped when he got to Golden State. So I think it's two at the least. Yeah. They just had some unfortunate and the injuries bro with Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody, you know, them guys probably gonna be out for show this season. So I don't know, man, the Warriors gonna have to figure it out but I wouldn't mind seeing Steph and Tatum bro.
53:05You know, hey. That ain't bad at Miami. You said Miami, now that ring bells. Okay, I got another one for y 'all then. The Houston Rockets are considered as a serious destination for Russell Westbrook. Can y 'all see Kevin Durant and Westbrook reuniting his teammates after a decade apart can y 'all see it move can you see it mr park at this at this stage of their careers right um no one has anything to prove everybody wants to play good basketball yeah yeah yeah i played you know older guys as well so y 'all know what it is to be able to play basketball at a at a high level at a at an efficient level and uh i I think Russ has hit that status now to where he ain't just, you know, gone.
53:51He ain't Russ of 25 years old. And Russ is one of the greatest dudes I've ever met in my life. He is, dude. All the stories about him being a great teammate, I haven't been his teammate, but I know him and been around him a lot. So that's a great dude. I think with him walking into that locker room right now with a common goal of trying to get to a championship and win at this stage, especially older, I think it's a great place for them. because they've been looking for a point guard for a long time. So you find Russ, and if Russ is cool with coming off the bench, I don't think you can get a better backup point guard than that.
54:23Hell no. I mean, think about this. You know, you think about all the great times that they had in OKC, and obviously they came up short, being up 3-1 against their Warriors team, and then KD goes and joins. Man, they have to think about those times and be like, what if? You know what I mean? What if we would have stayed together? Hell, we probably would have at least got one. You feel me? So I wouldn't mind seeing Westbrook team back over KD in Houston, bro. I think he'll bring them a totally different dynamic at their point guard position because guess what? You know what you're going to get from him every night.
54:54He's going to play hard as I don't know what. He's going to defend. You know what I'm saying? And he understands playmaking. You know what I mean? KD ain't had one. Boom, let me find big fella. Let him get him an easy one. You know what I'm saying? Dump down to the other big fella. You know, I think he makes the game easy for everybody. He just got to keep his turnovers down. If we're keeping it 100. I think them having what's his name back, Fred back, will make that easier for Russ. Russ can play with you on the ball, off the ball. Him coming off the bench behind Fred, I think that's a great spot.
55:25I think that's a great spot for Russ. Russ can play basketball in that system. And like I said, man, we all older. Russ is older now. He don't care about all the other shit that was going on when he was young. Right now it's about winning and playing basketball the right way. It is, bro. Check this out, though. But one NBA scout told Ira Winderman that he wouldn't touch free agent Russell Westbrook in a million years. He said, I wouldn't touch him in a million years. You can't rely on him in his terms of what was going to happen. Yeah, he'll have you in great games, sure. But he can't shoot. He plays his own way.
56:00He's not going to fit into a system he doesn't really defend. What y 'all think about him saying that? You said that. Westbrook is different. Yeah, this guy, Ira Winderman, I guess he'll be right, a reporter or something. It's been reported that this is what he said. He said he wouldn't touch him in a million. He said, I mean, yeah, he'll put up some numbers and he'll win you some games in terms of truly building winning team. You don't get him on your team. I think that's false. I agree with what we were talking about. If I'm the Houston Rockets, bro, I'm taking that gamble. I'm taking that gamble.
56:40Because look, think about this. Even if Fred Van Fleet, I'm sure he will start the season. But damn, he just come off of ACL surgery. Y 'all going to run him in the ground for 82 games? And what are you going to be able to get you in the postseason? Nothing. So you got to have some depth at that point guard position. Guys who know how to play. Guys who know and understand the game. And who can make the game easy for the guys around them. So I always think, bro. And when you look at him, because he up in age, smooth, and pargo, he always in great damn shape. And for me, y 'all know me, bro. I'm a guy who loves a guy in great shape.
57:13You're in great shape. You can play with me any day. Hey, man, I'm giving that a chance. I ain't going to lie to you. You've got to give it a chance because I think he's talking about the young Russell Westbrook that had his own team. That Russell Westbrook, if he's still thinking that way, then I can agree with him. But I guarantee you, Russ ain't thinking that way. This man is showing that he's willing to change. He's coming off the bench, bro. This is a Hall of Famer. Later in his career, that's coming off the bench, and he's okay with it. How do you hear people say how much of a great teammate and a great person he is, and you put that on that man's name at 30?
57:43What's Russ, 38, 37? Yeah, yeah. You put that on his name at his age's career. Don't do it. And it's a real true testament, Smooth and Pargo, that his love and passion for the game, bro. You know what I mean? Because at some point, you keep hearing these stories about yourself, people creating these false narratives, man. You'll throw your hands up. Like, man, damn all this. I'm going to move around. But he continued to fight and worked for his spot, bro. So he got the utmost respect. I got a question, Smooth. What's the beef everybody got with Westbrook, bro? Why everybody be down with Russ all the time or talking down on him, bro?
58:24What's up with the disrespect? Is he the most – okay, I'll ask you this. Is he the most disrespected guy of all times? I think so. because in my eyes, he's the top five point guard of all time. Man. But what point guards you know that average a triple-double in multiple seasons? You know what I'm saying? That's hard to do. I think what it is is people don't like his demeanor, but how you want a player or a point guard to play at that position. You know what I'm saying? You want a dog with some swagger at that position. Yeah. I think he's the most understood basketball player of all time too. You know what I'm saying?
59:09I think he does a great job at being a family man, a husband. You know what I'm saying? What he's doing with his kids, what he's doing for his community. Yeah. I don't know why, man. I mean, it's kind of crazy to me to see the hate when you have all of those things going on on a positive note about yourself. But I don't think people like how he answers questions to the media. You know what I'm saying? It's mostly – you got to think about it. It's mostly the media that tries to paint bad pictures on him. It's not really guys that really know basketball, like, you know, basketball players or, like Pargo said, teammates that play with him or guys that just cross paths with him and just got a dose of who he is as a person and his character.
1:00:00So I don't think that, you know, the media paints a great picture of him. But at the same time, they have to have something to say in order to it's like clickbait. You know what I'm saying? At the end of the day. So it's like it's a narrative that that they painted on him. So it's like, why not keep saying it if I'm another reporter? You know what I mean? Right, right. It's just like Skip Bayless back in the day, making his career out for bashing LeBron James. You know what I mean? Yeah. Yeah, because once that narrative is created and put out there, the damage is done already. You know what I mean?
1:00:37Whether it's true or false, you know what I mean? People are going to kind of run with it. So I get what you're saying. I get what you're saying. Jeremy, what do you think, bro? Why everybody be hating on Westbrook, bro? It's got to be something from back in the day, man, when Russ was the guy. where, you know, when you're the guy, you have a lot more leeway to do what you want, say what you want. And they continue to put that on them. But that man doesn't deserve it. That man has literally changed his entire career because it's been guys in the past that's fought about coming off the bench and not wanting to do this.
1:01:08That man has put his head down and said, I'm going to Sacramento. I'm going to come off the bench. I'm going to play for the Clippers. I'm going to come off the bench and do what I can to help the team win. You can see how he is with young guys. He's helping young guys come along. he's great for your franchise at this point. He's not a problem. So I don't understand why people try and pick on him and put that on him. And I am a Westbrook advocate right now. I'm a big fan of what Russ does, especially at this stage of his career, because he's completely changed his game to fit any system in the NBA, any team.
1:01:36I agree. Because he's not going to do too much. I agree. I agree. I agree with you on that. Oh, yeah. Welcome to On the Field, Today's hottest sports stories presented by On Nicotine Pouches.
