In short
The hosts debate the NFL ending the Pro Bowl as an actual game, and discuss the league’s new tougher discipline for high-risk tackles (hip drop, horse collar, launching, hitting a defenseless player, blindside block). They also reference quarterback Deshaun Watson being “QB1” and sparking a protest at Browns Stadium.
Guests
No named guests appear. The episode is hosted by Shannon Sharpe with co-host Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson and ISO Joe Johnson (the “Big Three”).
Key claims
- The Pro Bowl is being “unplugged” because players don’t take it seriously (often flag/two-hand touch, frequent no-shows).
- The NFL’s new tackle rules will “water down” physicality and force defenders to tackle in a limited, thinking-based way.
- The discipline is framed as player safety, but the hosts argue it also protects the league’s product and avoids lawsuits.
Notable examples
- Pro Bowl no longer includes replacement selections; Pro Bowlers are invited to an in-person Los Angeles celebration.
- Hip drop tackle described as causing ankle injuries for one host.
- Kickoff wedge tactics and full-speed collision history are discussed as contrast to today’s safer rules.

11:29Joe Johnson:Yeah. Okay.

11:33Shannon Sharpe:Joe, what did your mama tell you before you left the house? Boy, don't you embarrass me. Hey, yeah. Hold on. Hey, I ain't even - Every black holder heard that story.
11:43Joe Johnson:Technically, technically, I didn't embarrass us. No, I just got one wrong. Outside of that, I was - That was the easiest one on Joe, damn. Yeah. But see, I was getting the hard one. So what'd that tell you? Sometimes the easy stuff trips you up. Sometimes, listen, hey, John Elway throw you a slam. That's the easiest pass to catch. And you drop that thing. Yeah, you right. Then you get a ball with three people on you. You awesome. Take it off your shoe, Tom. You see? You right. It happens like that sometimes. So, you know, hey, players mess up. My bad, my bad. Hey, you know how them dogs, when you take your dog, you know how you take Big Titus out for a walk, and he get over there by the bush, he raise his leg up and take a, you know what I mean? He peed on the, yeah, he peed on the, yeah, he mark it there, and start kicking. You know what he doing, huh? He letting them know. Hell, I was in the vicinity. I was here. You hear me? He letting any other dog that come through there, let them know.
12:50Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, I was a big one. I can't drive. I wasn't playing no games, partner.
12:54Joe Johnson:Yeah. Yeah. But I'm trying to understand. I understand the dog, you know, marking his territory, but that's not going to be able to help you on the court when we shoot them threes. Ocho. They ain't going to help you. Huh? Hey, my midi game. Ocho, this thing ain't like riding a bicycle, man.
13:08Shannon Sharpe:You know, I get on a bicycle. I can hit the block. Hell, I ain't rode a bike. I don't know how long, but you put me on a bicycle. I can get going.
13:15Joe Johnson:Yeah. Well, hold on. You ain't the only one that grew up riding a bicycle. I mean, what are we talking about? We're trying to test me though, we're trying to run home. I had them all. I had them all.
13:22Shannon Sharpe:I had the one with the pegs where you could pull one of your homeboys, you know what I'm saying? He can stand on the pegs on the back. Yeah, man.
13:31Joe Johnson:OK, but see, this is the difference, Unc. Who couldn't? He couldn't do no tricks. He couldn't do no tricks. I could do, I'm ollieing on my bike and stuff, you know, doing down from one corner to the other.
13:42Shannon Sharpe:Ocho, light pole. You either rattled him the handlebars and you rolled him the seat while I stood up. That's all we need. light pole to light pole with what they will it with that thing in the air light pole to light pole just right oh you walking like that oh come on man that's how we did with ride bikes back in the day hey hey hey i'm telling you right hand boy all we did with ride bikes in the day hey all you had to do was ride through the neighborhood and look and look in everybody yard and see where everybody bikes was like that's what you know that's how you know where we was at hey hey uncle

18:07Shannon Sharpe:Hey, Ocho, something that's near and dear to our heart, the Pro Bowl. And I told you this day was coming, Ocho. I told you, Ted. I told you this day. Come go back and look at my tweets about this. The NFL Pro Bowl is no more. The league is doing away with the annual All-Star game beginning this season instead of opting to name 88 players to the Pro Bowl with no replacement selections and honor them with a celebration. The NFL revealed the change Wednesday at a press release, noting that the Pro Bowlers will be invited to an in-person celebration in Los Angeles the weekend when the Pro Bowl games would be traditionally held.
18:46Ocho, are they making the right decision?
18:49Joe Johnson:I mean, obviously I think they are. I think the creative minds on that end, they need to put their minds together and find something else for the players to do to incentivize them to actually take it serious. It's gotten so bad, Unc, they don't even wear pads for the Pro Bowl no more. They turn it into flag football because the players don't want to compete. I mean, it's so different, Unc, from the time, Joe, when me and Unc went to the Pro Bowl during those times, we actually played for real. We played for real. They just they might have on flags and obviously to turn into a flag football game.
19:25Joe Johnson:And it's just wait. The NFL just wasting money. It is just wasting money. They realize at this point, that's why they cut it out. Yeah, they cut it out. But how many how are you going to incentivize the players to come to a ceremony in L.A. when they're not maybe maybe maybe they treat it like an awards banquet? Hmm.
19:44Shannon Sharpe:And the boys ain't going to that. All I'm saying is I get if you don't want to come, don't come. But Ocho, they was getting down to the 10th ultimate. Guys with 10 interceptions. The guys that only started one game because everybody else would go. I can understand the first or second ultimate because what happened was you started playing the Pro Bowl the week before the Super Bowl. The guys that's in the Super Bowl, they're not going to be able to play in the Pro Bowl. So I understand that. There are players from each team that made the Super Bowl that's not going to be able to make the Pro Bowl.
20:19Shannon Sharpe:So you needed an alternate for that. But, Ocho, when you started getting down there to a guy that started three games and he's in the Pro Bowl, and you get guys that got ten interceptions, guys, and he's in the Pro Bowl, nah, do away. Let it go. Because they're telling you. They've been told you they don't take this game serious. They told you about the preseason. I fought the team owners. Y 'all the ones that started this foolishness with the preseason, not playing in the preseason. You think they're going to take it. If they're not gonna play in a preseason game that's leading to the regular season, you think they're gonna take something serious?
20:53Joe Johnson:At the end of the season. Man, stop. Yeah, absolutely not. And it is different too, Unc. When we went to the Pro Bowl, when you got selected, Joe, it meant something. It did.
21:03Shannon Sharpe:It absolutely did.
21:04Joe Johnson:It actually meant something. We going to Hawaii. I don't care where you from. You flying eight, nine, 10 hours. That's a real trip. That's a real honor to make the Pro Bowl back then. You know? And just listen, you make the Pro Bowl now, you go to Orlando. That's right down the street. Yeah, Las Vegas.
21:22Shannon Sharpe:Hey.
21:22Joe Johnson:Come on, man. That ain't no trip. It's different. It's different.
21:25Shannon Sharpe:Family used to want to go, Joe. Go ahead, Joe. The league eventually looked at this entire thing, Uncle Ocho, and was like, man, we got to stop pretending this a damn event. You know what I mean? I think now the focus and the honor of being selected, which honestly makes more sense to me, being a Pro Bowler still means something. You know what I mean? You know, I just don't think, you know, watching these Pro Bowlers basically glorify a recess of football. You know what I mean? Because think about it. Like you said, man, ain't nobody really taking this serious. Now all of a sudden everybody got mysterious personal commitments and illnesses.
22:02Shannon Sharpe:I'm like, come on, man. So if you don't take it serious, I just think the NFL was like, look, the Pro Bowl didn't die today. The NFL just simply, I want to say, unplugged the machine. They buried it today. It's been dead, Joe. Yep. It's been dead. It was on life support 10 years ago. That's what I'm saying. They unplugged the machine that was beeping for years, bro. That was it. Yep. Yeah. You're right. They took it off life support. They took it off. And the thing was that they tried to talk to him. It's like, look, we're going to cancel this. We're going to cancel this. We're going to cancel this.
22:39Shannon Sharpe:And guys used to, I mean, for the most part, Ocho, guys, with the exception of the quarterback, even the quarterbacks would go. Brett Favre would go. Peyton Manning stayed at the Pro Bowl. Guys would really go. Elway and Marino and Montana and those guys would go. Occasionally they missed, but not every year. No, no, no. And it used to be guys. Bro, look here. There are many times, don't you, I was the first alternate three times and didn't get to go once. Because guys didn't pull out. No. Pause. The guys.
23:17Shannon Sharpe:Guys, Joe, guys actually win. It wasn't no guys tell me, hey, I ain't got to do anything. Because that was an opportunity for them. And sometimes they had it in a contract. They had to go play in order for them to get the incentive that was in the contract. So I'm not going to go let somebody – I'm not going to – I made this – I got this honor and then all of a sudden not go because the teams wouldn't give them the money. So they had to go. And plus it was an opportunity for them to take the wives that's been in – or the significant other that's been in their corner all year long, that's had to put up with a lot, with your bull jive, with you, you know, you moody, games ain't go your way, you got late studies and all this, all that, and get the family, their family, your family over there for a nice, relaxing time.
24:00Shannon Sharpe:That's the way it used to be. And then something happened. I don't know exactly the time, but I just remember watching it. I say, man, these guys playing two-hand touch. Yeah. They playing too? I said, come on. I said, nah. I understand. You didn't play it. The only time, like the last five minutes or six minutes of the ball game, Ocho, it's a close ball game. Oh, buckle your chin straight up. Hey, Joe. Hey, we going. Guys were coming. Joe, guys started coming there. DT and Tez and all those guys, now they turn it up. And then now these guys started like that. For the first from the snap, they play a two-hand touch.
24:47Shannon Sharpe:I say, man, it's just a matter of time. I say, the NFL ain't going to put up with this much longer. They put up, and I will say this, and I'm going to turn it back over to you, Ocho. The NFL put up with it longer than they thought they would. I thought they would. Considering spending all that money sending them over there. That's a lot of money to send that many people, to send a whole NFL staff, take down an entire hotel. You know, all those first class, you get two first class tickets. I know the airline's upset about it, but I'm just like, bro, I just don't get what you're saying. I don't get it.
25:18Shannon Sharpe:And maybe some things ain't for me. Hey, outside of the game, probably one of the most, the funnest part for me to watch during the Pro Bowl was, you know, bring back the position challenges. You know, the fastest man, the strongest man, the strongest arm, et cetera. Things of that sort. I enjoy watching those type of competitions, Uncle Ocho. Now, I get it. The guys don't really take the Pro Bowl seriously. But at the same time, I still, you know, I love watching the environment. I love the camaraderie, watching the greats play against, you know, the best play against the best that's in the NFL at the time.
25:51Shannon Sharpe:And you're taking all that away too? Like, I mean, those were some of the most iconic, you know, situations, bro. The NFL fastest, man, a lot of the quarterback stuff, that was the quarterback club when they were throwing the ball and they were getting the offensive course and doing certain stuff, things like that. That was the quarterback club. They put that on separately. The quarterback club was different than the Players Association. They had their own thing. And then they started stealing certain players like an Emmitt Smith, like a Bruce Smith. They started stealing some of the high-profile players that weren't quarterbacks.
26:28Shannon Sharpe:And then the Players Association ended up buying the quarterback club. So, yeah, I remember what they need to have. You know what they used to have? I don't know if y 'all remember this. The superstars used to come on ABC where it took athletes from different genres. They'd race them. They'd have a bicycle race. They'd have a swimming race. Y 'all don't remember when Joe – I think it might have been Joe Frazier. Y 'all almost tried that. I think it was Joe Frazier. Y 'all forget who it was, Chad. Y 'all look that up and let me know. But nah, man, it's just that. Joe, you saw with the NBA. Yep.
27:05Shannon Sharpe:Adam Silver says, okay, if y 'all don't start playing, we're going to cut it out. Because we done tried everything. It was the East versus the West. And then we let LeBron and we let KD and we let Giannis and we let this one. We let them select the squad. We let Steph and LeBron select the squad. Y 'all still wouldn't play. We tried it like this and y 'all still wouldn't play. Adam Silver said, you're headed for a situation where there ain't going to be no All-Star game. and do you want to be the one? And you guys NFL got players that's responsible for this, that played the last decade, you ought to be embarrassed because something that would have been going on before your parents were born, y 'all ruined it.
27:41Shannon Sharpe:You ended it. Y 'all did. Y 'all did that. So be proud of yourself because that's what you've done. Yeah, you mean –
27:49Joe Johnson:I mean, it sucks. It sucks. Times are different now, Uncle Joe. Times are different. Obviously, the players are making so much money right now. There's really no incentive. of actually playing in the pro bowl it doesn't have hold up hold up hold up oh joe oh joe you
28:05Shannon Sharpe:you do have somewhat of an obligation to the fans bro yeah yeah during the season well don't how about this let's just say joe and i agree with you don't take your black ass or your white ass over there and play in the game if it don't mean the same to you how about that stay your ass at home and let somebody go over there that will play hold on don't um that's they don't that's why
28:28Joe Johnson:it'd be the third fourth or sixth or seventh eighth alternate because they don't want to go
28:32Shannon Sharpe:you got a point why you can't why they can't put like uh uh rewards behind some of these different challenges and events for guys can win like put some money behind somebody the strongest arm joe joe do you realize like when i played when i played when i played joe the losers got five 5 ,000 the winners got 10 ,000 now they get a hundred thousand Yeah, we got five thousand dollars. Do you know if you take two people over there? They don't hate that whole five thousand up by the time you get the room. Oh, Joe You better tell me room was like 225 a night. Oh, yeah They get over there when you get over I got over there on a Sunday So Sunday night Monday night Tuesday night Wednesday night Thursday night Friday night Saturday night We left on the red eye out of Hawaii coming back home because by the time we landed We left at about 1230.
29:24Shannon Sharpe:By the time we got to L.A., we'd have an hour layover. Now it's time for us to get on the flight and go back to where we go, go back to Georgia. So that's what it was. Now, imagine I bring my coach and his wife. I brought three position coaches, my coach and his wife, my other coach that coached him and his wife, the other coach and his wife. And I put them up and I fed them. so what's five thousand what's five thousand dollars gonna do when you brought four five people or you bring bring a girl or your your wife and your kids hell what is ten thousand that's why i'm saying with all these events even all-star weekend bro put put put put a hundred thousand on the three-point shootout the dunk contest put put put something that that that these guys will really go out there and play for because if it ain't if it ain't no stipulation on on okay i can win this man guys ain't getting into it okay ocho it's just what it is bro you're right is the culprit of it too because tom never went after i would i my for my last one ocho in 2000 in 2001 excuse me chat that was my last pro bowl that might have been the last time tom showed up he might have went to one more tom was selected to 15 probos i guarantee you he didn't go to five
30:41Joe Johnson:Hey, Joe. Hey, Joe is saying incentivize, right? Especially in today's era. Joe, you gotta understand the players that are making the Pro Bowl are the players that didn't pay the big bucks. Yes, that should be incentive enough. It ain't enough money to incentivize him to come and I just made 40 million in six months. Man, listen, hey, I understand them
31:04Shannon Sharpe:boy got some money, but ain't no money like some old money. Okay. Hey, hey, you, you, yeah, yeah. I'm saying you got to put some on that's going to move. Huh?
31:13Joe Johnson:A hundred thousand?
31:14Shannon Sharpe:A hundred thousand?
31:16Joe Johnson:Joe, man, that ain't, that ain't, that ain't moving to leave. Yeah, I ain't leaving my house. I ain't leaving. If I'm making 50 million,
31:21Shannon Sharpe:I ain't leaving my house for a hundred thousand. Listen, listen, listen. Listen, listen. I ain't been to tell nobody. Joe, you know damn well, if you making 50 million right now, can't Nobody gets you to leave your house and go way to L.A. You done making$50 million for$100 ,000. You probably got a point, huh? You probably got a point. But listen, listen, listen, listen. You got to put some type of reward on it to where these guys show up and play. Look, they talking about they want to do a one-on-one contest in the NBA. Man, listen, you put the right amount of money up, you'll get the top guys playing.
31:52Shannon Sharpe:We'll see a one-on-one basketball event through our All-Star weekend. So I just think there's ways you can improve it. Hell, you got to be willing to spend some money, man. Well, you look at the unrivaled the way they had it. They got the one-on-one tournament. They killed it with that, too. But they also got a one-on-one. They killed it with that. It's good. But you see what we've done? We've done as we've increased the money, we've decreased the player's desire to play the game. Yeah. Because at the end of the day, Ochoa and Joe is still playing the game. Yeah. So now I've increased it. You went from guys, I remember when quarterbacks made$2 million a year, and that was wow.
32:32Shannon Sharpe:I remember John Elway was the highest paid. He made like$5 million,$5.2 million. He was the highest paid. Now guys making$50 ,000,$60 ,000. The next contract, you might get Caleb Williams and C.J. Stroud. You might get them guys making$70 million. You got a wide receiver making$42 million. You got quarterbacks. Making$30-something. Man, they'd have to take it. I mean, if guys like Prime and Rod Wilson was playing, the team would have to take out a loan to play them guys. I'm like, gee. But it's just, that's what I just don't get it. Something, you know, they're like, hey, it was a different time.
33:17Shannon Sharpe:No, there's something that's always been called pride. And I had enough of that that I wanted to go play. and when I'm in there, I'm going to play. I'm not going to try to injure nobody, but I'm not surprised by this. This was the right call. It should have been the right call many, many years ago. Guys skipping, and all of a sudden you've got a guy. Now you're going to have a guy retire. Man, I made the Pro Bowl. Oh, damn. Oh, my goodness. I ain't telling nobody he was the 17th alternate. Hell, they was about to have to go grab college players to get some of these guys. I said, man, y 'all need to stop.
33:56Shannon Sharpe:Y 'all too much. Hey, hey.
34:01Joe Johnson:Hey, it's unfortunate. Unfortunate. Hey, hey, Joe. Well, when we made the Pro Bowl, when I made it, I made it six times. Six, how many times I made it? Six, seven? Whatever it was. All I cared about after that first one, Joe, and I found out about that French toast at the Iheilani. Yo, that French toast? Oh, my God. i don't know if there's anybody ever stated the helani if anybody yeah yeah if they still had that french toast at the helani i don't know if it was a dessert was it the syrup or the batter they make the french toast with joe there's one place and this is no disrespect to the restaurants i've been to throughout the years who watched the show there's no place i've ever had better french toast than elani except a restaurant in montreal when i played for alouette that one season called la avenue that was the name of the restaurant dog joe i ain't never had no french toast like that to the point where it's been over a decade 12 15 years and that french toast still
34:59Shannon Sharpe:sits at the top of my brain next time you in la go to the beverly wilshire they got some french toast that's what we used to stay at beverly wilshire the beverly wilshire on yeah right there right down on wilshire and the corner of of redale drive so like redale drive would run right into it if You didn't stop at that light and turn left or turn right. You'd run right into the Beverly Wilshere. They got some of the best – they got the best French toast that I've had. And I haven't gone to that place that you've gone to in Montreal. I have had the Iolani because obviously my group, my year, was the first year that we actually stayed because we used to stay in the Hilton Hawaiian Village.
35:35Shannon Sharpe:But the NFL thought that was because people could just walk up. That was just a public place. And the NFL's like, you know what, nah, we got too many high-profile athletes over here. And the guys really stopped coming in because guys couldn't get no rest. They couldn't be with their family because they're trying to lay on the beach. And people were coming up to them wanting autographs, wanting to take pictures. And so the NFL decided, let's get something a little bit more private. And so we went a little further to the Iolani. So that was the first year. That was 93. But the Beverly Wilshire, as far as French toast?
36:05Shannon Sharpe:Hey.
36:06Joe Johnson:Yeah. Hey, and Joe, I'm the wrong person. You talk about Beverly Hills because when you say Beverly Hills, automatic the first thing my mind starts is price point and that sound like it'll be too expensive now when i'm when i am in la i have no problem going to toast right on third avenue not too far from the beverly center like that's a little bit better be careful they running down on people now
36:27Shannon Sharpe:especially with jewelry ball they look they do they recognize who you are they running down on you oh you know i keep that thing on me yeah hey hey hey hey why we talking about french sauce for I wanna try them pancakes in New York though. Oh, your fluffy mugs I sent you, Joe? Oh, I seen that before. I wanna try them, John. Yeah, I think they bake them in a skillet. I wanna try them too, Joe. But I happen to hold you, Joe. I can't wait two hours. The only place I can wait two hours for to get in the heavens, I wait as long as God say, hey, we backed up. I sit right out there. Hey, God, your Lord, you just know I'm out here.
37:05Shannon Sharpe:You know I'm out here when you get to me. Give me a place somewhere in your kingdom.

40:14Shannon Sharpe:Starting with this season, the NFL will focus discipline on on-field rules violations that are most likely to result in injuries of players. Hip drop tackle, horse collar tackle, launching to hit a defensive player, and a blindside block. Any players who commit these five offensive rules during the season will receive a one-game suspension. Any. You heard what I said, Ocho? Starting this season, if you get called for a hip drop or horse tackle, launching, hit on a defensive player or a blindside block, a defenseless player. So you launch, you hit a defenseless player or a blindside block. You commit any of these.
41:06Shannon Sharpe:So, hold on. Any player who commits three of these five. So which one? The hip drop, horse collar? and the defensive or the blindside block? Or do you have to commit all three of them during the course of the season?
41:19Joe Johnson:Hey, that's tough, huh? That's tough. The fact that they're even implementing this in the way the game is now, I don't want to call the game watered down as opposed to player safety, which is the main part of under the umbrella of what they – we know why the rules are why they – Correct. Why the rules are as tough as they are. But defenses are already handicapped. and implementing this even further makes it that much more difficult for teams and players, especially those that may be aggressive, for them to actually play football. Play the game of football that we all love, that we grew up watching.
41:53Joe Johnson:And obviously it's a good thing. They say it's for player safety. Yes. But it's also for protecting the shield, you know, 10, 15 years down the line.
42:02Shannon Sharpe:So, Joe, before you go, if I'm reading this correctly, so hip drop tackle horse collar tackle launching hit on a defensive player blindside block I guess if you get three of these five during the course of a year it's a one game suspension so if I get one of these in week one get another one in week five get another one in week seven so your third offense you got to sit a game if I'm understanding the rules correctly go ahead Joe You're making the game S-O-F capital T. Y 'all know it. Ocho know it. He ain't going to say it. Hey, I ain't going to lie, though. A damn hip drop tackle, I've seen it take a lot of cash out, boy.
42:46Shannon Sharpe:I've seen it take a lot of cash out. My thing is you're taking away a lot of the physicality from football, bro. You know what I mean? I don't even know how you're supposed to. I mean, think about it now. Hell, to make a tackle, you got to figure out where you – you know what I mean? You can't hit a guy in certain spots, Ocho.
43:03Joe Johnson:Yeah. No, and we know it's like you know what gonna happen uncle Joe The fact that you're telling defenders that they can't actually play the game Full speed at free will without having to think now you got people thinking trying to make tackles somebody hurting itself Somebody gonna end up hurting yourself because there's no way you can change the way you've been playing a certain game for so long The only one of the problems is everybody's bigger faster and stronger Not only that now you tell me I can't tackle the way I've been tackling all my life There's only one way to tackle. All of them aren't going to be textbooks.
43:38Joe Johnson:All of them aren't going to be textbooks. The game of football is a barbaric sport. It's a physical sport. It's about intimidating your opponent. If you lose the fact of intimidation, you might as well put some damn flags on.
43:52Shannon Sharpe:If as someone that's gotten injured with a hip drop tackle, I don't know if you ever got hip dropped, Ocho.
44:03Joe Johnson:Oh, no. I don't play that. As soon as I feel anything and I'm going the other way, I just fall. The hip drops come from. See, the thing was, the guy got me.
44:10Shannon Sharpe:He grabbed me around my waist. Yeah. And dropped down on it. And let his weight fall. Yeah. And now my ankle pinned up under me. So it pinned my ankle. That's what you're talking about. Rolled my ankle inside. That's what you're talking about. That was the start of me shooting up my ankles over the course of two years. about 30 times. I get it. They really look because they want their stars on the field. Now, the one person that doesn't, the less likely to get all of these is probably the quarterback. Occasionally he gets hit. When he's running, he'll get horse collars, or you reach back and you try to grab him as you run past him.
44:50Shannon Sharpe:Obviously, he ain't running about no block because the thing is, sometimes the quarterback, The quarterbacks are taught now don't even turn and chase it Because somebody go peel your cap. Okay.
45:01Joe Johnson:Yeah You can't crack back no more if anything would you see most players do Joe if there's an interception they just do this Yeah, put the hands out and just blocking for going back.
45:13Shannon Sharpe:That's it That's it. It's a it's a different era. It's a different era now They're doing everything they possibly can they want to keep their best players on the field They don't want another lawsuit. I don't know what they think they're going to get by adding this extra game, 18 game, because you see what they're doing, though, Joe. You see what they're doing? They keep cutting. They don't went from four to three. Now they're about to go from three to two. And so anytime you take something away, I got to add something somewhere, Joe. Yes, sir. Regular season. You know, if I'm making gumbo, if I take one ingredient, I got to add more to the other.
45:49Shannon Sharpe:Hey, and look at the kickoff now. You can't even – they taking away the collision out the game, bro. They done softened it up. They done softened it up. I ain't going to lie, Joe. Them collisions hurt. I bet they do, bro. And somebody that was on the kickoff team in the kickoff return, and you let somebody get a running start, Joe, and they run – think about it. That's 40 yards. They ain't coming downhill. Before you make contact. Joe. Yeah. Oh no.
46:20Joe Johnson:You was on the kickoff squad, Ojo? Hell no. No, I was Joe. Yeah, I was. My rookie year, I was the wedge buster, Joe. He might have been a safety or something. No, no, no. I wasn't on safety. Hey, Joe, I might have been small, right? But you know, when I was with the Bengals my first year, you know, they had me at DB first. I got drafted as a receiver, but the receiver room was so full, I played a little DB on the scout team. No, Joe, listen to me, Joe. I'm telling you, I played a little DB on it. Joe, I said scout team. You know, you don't play that much, Joe. So you got to go scout team. When we used to go live drills, man, I used to be filling the hole at a, I used to light Corey Dillon up.
47:03Joe Johnson:I knocked this helmet off one time, and the whole team, they started calling me thumple.
47:06Shannon Sharpe:Corey Dillon was a bad boy, though, Joe. The bunny rabbit, the bunny rabbit thumple. Because you know when bunny rabbits get excited or get upset, they start thumping the tail.
47:18Joe Johnson:No, it's just, hey, hey, it's about, no, I'm telling you, I'm telling you. I'm able to tell this story now. But, you know, I used to run a scout team, cornerback sometimes, be the scout team safety, and I never played free safety. I would always be the strong safety because I'm so good at filling the A and C gap and, you know, taking on the fullback. Ask Lorenzo Neal about me.
47:37Shannon Sharpe:Well, I know you don't want another O 'Neal. Second of all, filling the gap on the safety. I dropped him in practice. Hey, Ocho, I ain't been to hold you, but filling the gap as a safety and filling that gap on the wedge, if you're L3, L4, L5, it's something entirely different because you've got to realize. I know. I did it in the preseason. Why you think they don't let the guys – they used to have a three-man wedge. The Chargers had a three-man wedge, weighed over 1 ,000 pounds, Joe. See, they don't let them join hands no more. See, they guys used to hold hands. Man, you talking about some concussions.
48:13Shannon Sharpe:Oh, yeah. Oh yeah. Oh yeah. Them guys get up standing, move like Gumby. Yeah.
48:23Joe Johnson:Hey Joe, hey Joe. Well I'm telling you, I was back there. I was hitting like Atwater boy. Yeah boy. Yeah, even though I had a small frame, that's why they called me Thumper. Oh, okay. Yeah, yeah. Hey, I bring that hammer boy. Wow. But that kickoff, the kickoff,
48:41Shannon Sharpe:Because most of the things happen in kickoff, kickoff return, or punt return because the guys got a head of steam. Coming downhill. You running full speed this way. I'm running full speed that way. Something got to give. Something. Something that got to give. Low man win. Yes. And boy, back then, boy, look here, Joe. I knocked five from him, Joe. You were hitting when you were out there hitting up. I was really on the kickoff team. I was really, really on the kickoff team. Not no practice, not no scout team kickoff. For real, for real kickoff.
49:22Shannon Sharpe:Hey, you better have something about old 81. 81 go down there and get them here. I was a head busser, for real. Oh, yeah, Graveyard. Because I left the field, Joe. There were bodies everywhere. Go look at the field. You'll see them. Yeah, man, Graveyard had it going on back in the day. but I also was my Joe oh Joe I was also smart enough I need to get off here and I'm tired of having a damn here to camp every game hey hey that's a that's a wrap for me man I need to start
49:53Joe Johnson:catching some passes hey boy hey Joe I used to get that smelling salt you get right kickoff man let's go down there on kickoff man you know i was the l5 you hey hey hold on
50:08Shannon Sharpe:oh so they mean you probably won the first one down there weren't you
50:12Joe Johnson:yeah because i was the best i was the fastest one so before they even got locked hands with the wedge joe i'm already there i'm already i'm coming to the party man i'm not even knocking
50:22Shannon Sharpe:i'm just opening the door hello and and then they had guys because then before they changed the rules guys were cutting guys' knees out from under them. Because you didn't want to hit no 340-pound defensive lineman on the 300 line. You didn't want to hit him in his chest and hit him straight up. You had to try to blow the wedge up.
50:43Shannon Sharpe:Nah, let the five and the four have that wedge. I don't want no part of that. I'm going to knife it now. I'm going to come in from the backside, Joe, but I ain't messing with that wedge. Damn.
50:56Shannon Sharpe:Demonstrators vandalized protest sites on the statue of Hall of Famer Jim Brown outside of Brown Stadium, calling out the franchise for their naming of Deshaun Watson, their week one starter. One of the signs on the Jim Brown statue read 280 ,027-plus victims, zero support. Another sign called Watson's presence on the team, permanent damage to the city and the franchise. As you can see it right there. The Browns have only two players with their life-size statue. That's Otto Graham, double zero, and Jim Brown. Why y 'all pick on Jim's? Hey, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. I told you on Ocho what was going to happen.
51:39Shannon Sharpe:I told y 'all them folks were going to be ticked off. Hey, man, them folks are not happy about this situation, bro. They are. They not. Now, hopefully, you know, Deshaun can use this for fuel and go out there and put on some great performances in week one and two. but I don't care if they come back 2-0. I still think it's going to be bad. When they come back home for game three.
52:07Hey Joe, I'll tell you one thing.
52:11Joe Johnson:Winning does cure all. If them boys jump out the gate, boy, if they jump out the gate 2-0, he going to hear some cheers. I'm telling you because they're going to be happy. They're not used to that. I don't even know the last time the Cleveland Browns started 2-0 in a season but with all this going on with with with them protesting outside you know because deshaun is a starter there's only one thing that's gonna make them forget that he is a starter is the fact that he's starting we're winning well wait a minute as a fan that's the only thing i care about all they had to go off of is what he's done in the past which is next to nothing because of the injuries and him not looking that good anyway when he was playing i'm telling you what winning but winning what winning is a blinder winning a blind you man like a woman in love a woman in love blind well she don't see nothing i mean but what's the i mean i'm letting them let them board let them let them i know i know we hypothetically yeah i know we hypothetically
53:07Shannon Sharpe:speaking but what's the damn chances i'm starting off too old though
53:13Joe Johnson:hey joe that's the good thing about the nfl especially early in the season everybody oh ain't no telling what's gonna happen. That's the good thing.
53:21Shannon Sharpe:I think it's -
53:22Joe Johnson:I know they're a team that are really good. They don't start getting to their stride till week four, four, and five.
53:28Shannon Sharpe:I think they got the same chance of waking up. I think they got the same chance of starting two and O's. I got a chance of going to bed tonight, waking up light skiing. Damn, that's how you feel. What'd you think the likelihood of that happening? What y 'all think the likelihood of me waking up and I wake up tomorrow and I'm the complexion of Shemar Moore? They ain't gonna have it, partner. I ain't think so. Damn. They ain't made enough bleach cream with that salmon salsa cream that they got going on to get me that complexion.
53:59Joe Johnson:Hey, listen, y 'all wanna make a little friendly radio?
54:02Shannon Sharpe:Whatever you wanna be, you.
54:05Joe Johnson:On this, I guarantee the Browns be one-on-one going into week three.
54:09Shannon Sharpe:Who, they got Jags? They got Jaguars and the Buccaneers? It's Tampa Bay. Hey, I bet. I bet it. Let's bet him on. Yeah, you know, I'm, well, I'll just be betting my money. You know how you're at the table, you lift somebody money, then they want to fade you. I got the fade. No, you don't. With my money, you ain't got no damn fade. You better fade your ass up from here. Yeah.
54:35Joe Johnson:Hey, listen. Hey, I just, I just, listen. Even as a Bengal fan, man, even as a Bengal fan, I just want to see the Browns do well. I just do because there's so much turmoil. They haven't been happy as a franchise in a very long time. I want the fans to have something to cheer about for a change. I want to have something to cheer about for a change, man, except when they play us, except when they play us, man. I just – it sucks. It sucks for them. It's been a very long time. They really haven't had much to cheer about. Hopefully things turn around and Deshaun does something special and has an out-of-body experience and looks just a glimmer of what he used to when he was in Houston.
55:14Joe Johnson:The chance of that happening is not likely, but, hey, it's the NFL.
55:19Shannon Sharpe:He damn sure going to need to have an out-of-body experience, Ocho. Yes, sir. Yes, sir. You said that right. I just – this is not going to end well, unfortunately. I just don't see it, Joe. I just don't see a scenario where it ends well.
55:37Joe Johnson:I think it will end well. it can end well because there's another part to the story oh you're talking about coming in okay okay oh yeah yeah this is just page one you know of the book you know the book continues now chapter one chapter chapter one don't work hey but when you think about it what about the sean in this
55:53Shannon Sharpe:case let's say you know it don't work out for him here in cleveland uh i mean with the money that he's old uncle ocho hell hey hey they didn't they didn't they didn't they didn't they didn't make should do it a starter so for me man it just feel like he gonna be there until hell he can he can pay out his debt no I think I think he's gonna get really Oh Joe they can if he's on the roster March 13th he gets 200 million dollars guaranteed you think they gonna give him another to it yes he has a poison pill in his contract that's what that's what that's why they call him a poison pill because we're trying to make it so cost prohibitive for us to sign you or for with someone else to sign you.
56:38Shannon Sharpe:And do you think somebody traded for that? So there's a chance. He's going to have to play. I think Deshaun's going to have to play out of his damn mind just to get picked up on another team. This might be the last hurrah for him, guys. I don't know what you think about that, Ocho. I don't know what you think, Joe. But this might be the last hurrah.
57:01Joe Johnson:You're right. You're right. I mean, I understand that. I mean, understand not only that, not only is his last hurrah understood because of the money he's making anyway in hell he's gonna be sitting on the bench that ain't happening no i know the fans don't like it i i know they probably probably hate it but i mean it is what it is especially when it comes down to business i just
57:19Shannon Sharpe:think everybody keeps talking about deshaun four or five years ago man due to the injuries that he sustained bro okay ocho he's never gonna be he's never gonna be that player again nope yeah
57:31Joe Johnson:and you know you know what even if he's not that player again you know who gonna have to show up for him the other 10 that's around him the other 10 that's around him they're gonna have to show up well he needed to hop somebody's gonna have to take that pressure off of him so he doesn't have to do it all somebody i don't know who i don't know who gonna step up but the thing was ocho
57:50Shannon Sharpe:is that he had a guy in d hopkins who was arguably the one or two three best receivers they don't have that there's nobody on their roster that's the one especially offensively that's one of the two or three best at their position. I like Harold Fannin Jr., but I don't think you're taking Harold Fannin Jr. over Trey Hendricks. I mean, Trey Hendricks. Is that his name? What's the receiver, the tight end in Arizona? McBride. McBride, Trey McBride, that's his name. Thank you, Joe. Trey McBride. I don't think you're taking him over Brock Bowers, Ocho. I don't think you are. But listen. But he's up and coming.
58:26Shannon Sharpe:In the next three years, I think he and Brock Bowers are consistently going to be challenging each other, especially if they get a quarterback. They settle in on the quarterback. If it's Shadour, if it's whomever, if they get a quarterback that consistently, I love Harold Fanny Jr. I love his game. I love the way he moved. He got wiggle to him. He got twitch. I can work with that.
58:49Joe Johnson:He's consistent, too. Yeah, for sure. Somebody is going to be that security blanket. I don't know who it's going to be. Somebody is going to be in the security. Harold Fanny Jr., when Shadour was playing last year, before Harold Fanny. That boy was cooking out there wasn't he, Ocho? He was, boy.
59:04Shannon Sharpe:I don't know. He was cooking, Joe. Yeah. Oh, my goodness. But this notion of you got to realize how athletic Deshaun was when he was in Houston, Ocho. You remember how Deshaun was being able to get away from guys and sling the ball 40 yards down the field. Y 'all remember him being able to escape the pocket. That's not what he is anymore. I don't believe. I agree with Joe. I don't believe he's ever going to be that again. I don't, man. We all remember what we once were, who we once were. And, boy, we long for the day sometime that we could be that person again. I know I do. Y 'all know what I be thinking about.
59:41Shannon Sharpe:I wish I could be that boy again. Y 'all know what I mean. I just said, Joe, I just wish. I just wish. Hey, you right, though. Because with the shoulder injury, two Achilles, come on, man. It's just hard to kind of gain that step, that quickness, that pizzazz that he had when he played in Houston. Man, that's gone, man. I'm just going to keep it warm. It's gone. It's gone.
1:00:06Joe Johnson:It's gone, Joe. But I told you, man, a quarterback is only as good as his support and cast. That's it. And if the talent around you is not as good as you'd like it to be, that means a quarterback has to be head and shoulders above everyone else. And he's not at that point anymore. So they got to be on point.
1:00:26Shannon Sharpe:Ocho, you might have to give him the damn Rams style. You might have to give him the Rams offense or the Cowboys offense where they're loaded across the board. It'd be all world.
1:00:36Joe Johnson:It'd be all world.
1:00:37Shannon Sharpe:And I'm saying, but he doesn't have that. And I don't know if he have the skill position players around him that can consistently elevate him to a level that you can win games with consistently. I don't know. We're going to find out. Excuse me, Chad. in about three weeks, we're going to find out this decision is going to just be an unbelievable, like, oh, my God, I can't believe I see what Todd Monk saw, or it's going to be a situation where you're like, Todd Monk, what the hell did you see? But I don't think anybody believed that this was Todd Monk's decision to begin with. It definitely wasn't.
1:01:20Shannon Sharpe:So I don't think anybody's going to blame Todd Monk. I think he's gone and showed you how much he thinks of Shadour. he's gotten better from the day I set foot in here. He's gotten better. He's attentive. He handles everything like a pro. I would expect nothing else. But there's only so much you can do when your body has kind of failed you like Deshaun's body has failed him. And like I said, I think they got some good players. but this thing here this thing is going to be it ain't going to be it's really really bad or it's going to be really good
1:02:06Joe Johnson:really really good and you know what I think the start of the season I think it's going to be really really good I don't know why I don't know why I think the football I think the football guys Uncle Joe I'm just going to be honest with you I'm a football fan I'm not actually cheering for the Browns I'm just giving my fair assessment on the way I think things are going to go, especially with him starting. I just think it's going to go really well in the beginning. I just think it's going to go. And I think the bottom is going to fall out at some point. When that happens, I don't know. I don't know, man.
1:02:34Shannon Sharpe:The Jags got a hell of a defense. Ochoa opened up on the road. Yes, they do.
1:02:40Joe Johnson:And Tampa Bay do too.
1:02:41Shannon Sharpe:I think this thing can get real ugly.
1:02:43Joe Johnson:Hey, that got them. Hey, that got them Ruben Bain, boy.
1:02:49Shannon Sharpe:I think this thing can get real ugly. I should have played quarterback. I ain't gonna lie to you. Yeah, oh yeah, yeah. No, no, not real. You got what you only got. You need to add another L to that. You need to add another L to that. What you doing, bro? Really? What you doing? Huh?
1:03:06Joe Johnson:I'm playing quarterback. Blue 80. Blue 80. Check, check, check, check, check. Mike 51, Mike 51. Hey, Shannon, get that safety blitz.
1:03:20Shannon Sharpe:Oh, Joe, Ocho, Ocho. Oh. Okay, now we good. Hey, what's that? What's that right there?
1:03:27Joe Johnson:Hey, you see me hit that thing at the bottom, right? That's letting you know that's that go route because he's pressing you.
1:03:34Shannon Sharpe:Okay.
1:03:37Set, hut.
1:03:39Shannon Sharpe:Bojo get himself blown up, Joe.
1:03:47Shannon Sharpe:Let this man runnin' like Forrest Gump.
1:03:53Joe Johnson:Woo! Hey, that bring back so many memories, boy. Oh, man.
1:04:02Shannon Sharpe:What's that? That's a slam, Joe. Slam. Smoke route. I'm saying, but the defenders, they know all these signals, though, don't they? They know them now because the West Coast system has been in effect for so long. you hit him with this square out come back
1:04:24Joe Johnson:hey our square out was this quick out our two was a slam but Carson did everything by the hip I gotta keep my eyes on him cause he see something he don't like or he see something he do like but he can change that thing up quick especially if I'm on the single side by myself ooh hey Joe I used to do this thing right if we get single high we get cover one or cover three and that's sitting in the middle of the field and he going through all the checks. I hate to bother the quarterback, Joe, but I tap his hip coming out the huddle, like psychologically letting him know I'm here. And if he don't look my way and I see just one-on-one, I just real loud, hee-hee.
1:05:06Joe Johnson:You can hear that throughout the whole stadium. Throughout the whole stadium, I just hit it twice. Hee-hee. Just let him know. Come on now. Don't even play.
1:05:16Shannon Sharpe:Well, we changed the play. We changed the live color. We had orange or blue. So we changed it to orange. That means we changed the play. Orange Detroit, blue Detroit. O'Shea. That's O'Shea. Shae for the day.
1:05:38Shannon Sharpe:Hey, Joe, I hear that five-step hit to the post. That's safety right there. I said, boy, if he threw that post, you had me. But I'm going to the corner.
1:05:54Shannon Sharpe:Make him smell the deodorant, Joe. Touchdown.
1:05:59Joe Johnson:But it ain't no better feeling, man, when you know you got him. That ball in the air, you can see him laces spinning. Oh, ain't no better feeling, boy. 1:07:14I loved it. On the day I decided to enroll in the nursing program at Rasmussen University, it was afternoon, my 35th birthday. I was hanging out with a friend, and they just questioned me what I was going to do with this next chapter of my life. I immediately had said, I want to go to nursing school. So I actually had contact information from an advisor at Rasmussen, contacted her, and actually ended up starting like three weeks later.
