In short
Nightcap episode mixes (1) an announcement for Nightcap’s first HBCU tour stop and (2) NFL preseason/quarterback debate, focusing on Jalen Milroe’s performance and the Cleveland Browns QB situation (Deshaun Watson vs. rookie/rookie-like options such as Shedeur Sanders). It also references a Titans-Seahawks preseason game and critiques QB play, turnovers, and sacks.
Guests (hosts/participants)
Chad Ochocinco Johnson (former Bengals WR; 6 Pro Bowls, 4 All-Pros; Bengals’ leading receiver “for now”); Joe Johnson (former NBA Hawks guard; 7-time All-Star; “Mr. Clutch”); “Uncle Joe” and “Ocho” are the on-air personas driving the discussion (no additional named guests in this transcript).
Key claims
- Nightcap HBCU tour: Sept 4 at Prairie View A&M “Baby Dome” vs Texas Southern; includes team, cheerleaders, band, and fraternity/sorority step competition for cash; more stops later.
- Jalen Milroe “needs work,” with turnovers/late throws criticized.
- Seattle’s backups looked sharper than Tennessee’s starters; Seattle missed field goals.
- Browns: Todd Monken will likely name Shedeur Sanders starter; Watson’s comments and recent play won’t win over fans; Watson should be released rather than kept.
Notable examples
- Titans vs Seahawks: Drew Lock praised early; Milroe criticized for two interceptions; Titans settled for field goals.
- Browns fan reaction: comparisons to booing Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold, and Zach Wilson.
- Watson performance cited as poor in 2024 (no 200-yard passing games; last 200-yard game in 2023).

10:04Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, he going too far. But again, so check this out, ladies and gentlemen. Let's go, PB. We will be having our very first HBCU tour. It kicks off September the 4th at the Baby Dome at Prairie View A &M University, ahead of their big Labor Day Classic against Texas Southern. This is an event that's been under the undertaking for about two years. We've been trying to pull it off. We've been trying to pull it off. Obviously, everybody knows I attended an HBCU, and I wanted to give the fans an opportunity to see that didn't attend one, that's never been one, to understand what it's like to be on an HBCU campus.
10:38Shannon Sharpe:So thank you, Prairie View, for giving us this opportunity, allowing us to make this happen. Thank you for other sponsors and supporters that also made this happen. Go ahead, Ocho.
10:47Joe Johnson:Now, listen, I pay attention to wording, right? When you structure a sentence, someone like me, I'm very detailed. And I heard the word. You said tour, okay? So when you're going to tour, a tour means multiple stops. Now, I'm excited about Prairie View A &M, Joe. This is the first stop, but yes, there will be more. Okay, okay, okay. Hey, let me know so I can get my schedule in order now.
11:10Shannon Sharpe:So PV, come out, stand up, show up, show out. We'll have some of everything going on. The team will be there, obviously the coaches, the cheerleaders, the band, and a step show where we have the fraternity, the Saras, and a competition for cash prizes. Yeah. Oh, it's going down.
11:28Chad Johnson:It's going down.
11:28Joe Johnson:Matter of fact, if anybody from PV right now, anyone that's in the band right now that can hear this or you can relate this to, you know, the band director before September 4th, tell him I need to hear Say La La. I need to hear Say La La multiple times. Multiple times at any point he can injunction, you know, hey, when we come out, the band got to bring us out, you hear me? Yeah, okay.
11:50Chad Johnson:Yeah, the band got to... To what song though, Ocho?
12:14Joe Johnson:I'm gonna be a drum. I'm gonna be a drum major. I'm gonna march out with the band like the drum major. Joe. Oh, you got the steps down the high knees and all that.

13:52So
13:52Shannon Sharpe:excuse me. So everybody that was involved to the team. Hey let's do what we do. Let's put on a show. The Tennessee Titans beat the Seattle Seahawks 19-16. Cam Ward, 8 of 12, 69 yards. Had a bad fumble. Drew Locke for the Seattle was 12 of 14, 103 yards. The touchdown, Jalen Milrow. Bro. Boy, boy, boy, boy, boy. Two horrible interceptions. Take your time. Take your time. I don't know. Let's take Seattle because Seattle looked great. Drew Locke looked really, really good in that first half. He was in complete control of the game. I mean, at one point in time, what was he like, six for six? Ended up leading them down on two drives.
14:33Shannon Sharpe:Played really, really well. They did miss a couple of field goals. But other than that, I thought Seattle in the first half, they played extremely well. And you've got to realize, the Seattle's offense did this against the Titans' number one defense. His starters played. They played on both sides of the football. And Seattle looked really well with their second unit in there. Go ahead, Ocho.
Read the full transcript
14:51Joe Johnson:Mr. McDonald evaluating some of the second-string guys for the Seattle Seahawks. He has to be happy. He has to be proud. If anything goes wrong with any of the players as far as the starters go when the regular season starts, he has the Unmost trust based on we just saw tonight from the from now from those that didn't start for the Seahawks Um, they scored in their first few possessions. Yeah, they scored in their first few possessions Hell that's 21 points right there 21 points in today's league unless you unless you're playing one of the better Offensively 14 points in the game. Yeah, you should you should win the game The tights on they didn't look good.
15:25Joe Johnson:They didn't look good Cam Ward missed some passes outside of that. They'll be okay. I think they'll be okay because the end of the season, the last maybe five or six games, he looked really good. So I'm hoping he picks up where he left off last year. This is why we have a preseason, to correct some of those mistakes, to get that rhythm back, get that rhythm and timing back. But still, it is the preseason. The Seahawks look good with their twos and threes. The ones for Tennessee, offensively and defensively, they didn't look good at all. They didn't. Joe?
15:57Chad Johnson:I thought, man, listen, I thought Drew Locke jumped out. He looked good. Uncle Ocho on them first couple drives. You know, a 36-yard touchdown to who was that? Arroyo? Yeah, Arroyo. And the right kid who broke for the 69-yard rushing touchdown. But the Titans starting defense struggled against Seattle's backup, you know, giving up them two touchdowns. But Cam didn't really impress me, Uncle Ocho. You know what I mean? I thought Tennessee offense had trouble finishing drives, and they had to settle for all them damn field goals. And, you know, in the season, man, points are a premium in this league.
16:33Chad Johnson:You know, I expect a little more from Cam. But Seattle's backup came out way sharper than Tennessee's starters, bro. The Titans moved the ball some, but for the most part.
16:44Shannon Sharpe:They were inconsistent all night. Seattle did miss two field goals. Guy hit a big field goal. They missed two. Remember, he got celebrated. They celebrated after they got that interception, and guys that weren't in uniform came on the field. So they assessed him a penalty, backed him up, so they ended up trying like a 40-plus yard PAT. He missed that. He missed a couple of field goals. So this game really should have been 17 plus another six, probably 23-19. And the Titans had to go down there and get a touchdown in order to win this ballgame. Yeah, I was disappointed. I thought Cam Ward could have played a little better than what he played also, and especially going against the backups.
17:26Shannon Sharpe:Because, Ochoa, I don't know how you thought about it, but I know if I'm going against the team's backups, I should have some success. Because if I'm struggling against the backup, what the hell are we supposed to do against their starters?
17:35Joe Johnson:Yep, most definitely. He missed some easy throws. It should have been layups. Obviously, Cardinal Tate one time on the left. You missed Cardinal Tate again on an over route. You overshot him, I mean, really, really bad, I think, because the defender was right on his hip. He was trying to shoot it out there as opposed to – he was trying to throw him open. But he missed that one. I mean, listen, it's, you know, you can nitpick on it. You want him to look better in the preseason, especially after already having one season under your belt and kind of correct some of the mistakes and make some of those easy throws because they're not going to come as easy during the regular season.
18:05Shannon Sharpe:No, hell no.
18:06Joe Johnson:But hey, hey.
18:08Shannon Sharpe:And plus, Ocho, Cardinal Tate got to do a better job on that go-round. You ain't leaving no room. Yeah.
18:13Joe Johnson:Okay.
18:14Shannon Sharpe:I mean, where he going to throw that at, Ocho? Where he going to put that at?
18:16Joe Johnson:Yeah.
18:16Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. He got to give him some room, bro. You can't jab.
18:20Joe Johnson:And then barely yeah, he did you got to steal me you got to keep him tight
18:23Shannon Sharpe:Let him fade you with the ball don't you fade before the ball get there because if you start fading He leaves you there. Guess what that's I don't know even if he had caught it I don't see how I get his feet in because if you saw his his right foot lands out of bounds so unless he just goes limp and I'm not balls pause but that's Unless he just a unless he just that you know I'm saying don't show that's what you got to do Sometimes you just have to catch it and let your body just limp. Let go, yeah. And I don't know if he's there yet, but he's got to give his guys. That's the one thing I noticed with young wide receivers is that the things they get away with in college, you ain't getting away with that in the NFL now.
19:04Shannon Sharpe:Not against these DBs.
19:06Chad Johnson:No, sir.
19:06Shannon Sharpe:So you got to be on your best behavior. Now, let's go to the other side of the football, the Seattle Seahawks. I don't know what Jalen Milrow on. He ain't got it on. I don't know what he saw. That first interception, don't you? I still, I rewind it. Rewound it. I still don't know what he saw. I have no idea. He threw it straight to him. Straight. Like the guy was on, like the DB ran the wall, ran the short cross. I'm like, bro, what are you doing? And then he came back and had another one.
19:42Joe Johnson:Yeah.
19:44Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, those mistakes are costly. But if you think about it, and the thing is, is that you see Trubisky with the second unit. See, after being in this system for a year, he should have been, Trubisky should be third. He should have went in there after Drew Locke. Now, it's going to be a very, very tough situation. Now, they could move on from Trubisky. They could. But I think Drew Locke is etched in at that two spot. Now, it's between Milrow and Trubisky for that third spot. For the third, yeah.
20:11Joe Johnson:Do you think they'll keep, they'll bring, let's say whoever wins the third spot, You think they'll keep the next player on the practice squad or where the third person just take all the practice reps?
20:20Shannon Sharpe:I look at the practice squad. Guys be in the league seven, eight years, and then come back and be on the practice squad. Bro, you done been playing. You done started and all this stuff. And number two draft pick, and all of a sudden you can go to the practice squad.
20:33Shannon Sharpe:Mike, Mike Ocho, that might make sense. You know what? We still believe in him. He just needs a little bit more time, a little bit more seasoning. But at some point in time, you can't keep making these silly, same silly-ass mistakes.
20:47Shannon Sharpe:mistake turnovers get you beat in professional sports. And it's hard for you to consistently overcome those. You can have them here periodically, but the one thing that Seattle did a great job of did once they got to the postseason, did once they got to the postseason, guys, is that they took care of the football. Yeah.
21:07Chad Johnson:But he got some learning to do, Ocho. I think Seattle will definitely keep him. Melrose, they'll probably let Chubisky go because there ain't no team carrying no damn four quarterbacks. I think we all know that. No, hell no.
21:20Shannon Sharpe:You don't think so, Joe?
21:21Chad Johnson:No, I think Melrose, he a great project, though, Unc and Ocho. You know what I mean? You can still buy some time from him. They just won it last year. He ain't really had a whole lot of reps. He ain't had a whole lot of time out there to really, really have chemistry and continuity. But I'm with you, Unc. I do expect for him to look way better than what he looked at night.
21:41Shannon Sharpe:That's my point, especially a year up under his belt. That's what I'm saying. If he's a true rookie, okay, I'm going to give him some latitude. Yeah. But not like this, not a full year of coming out and looking like this. And those are routine throws, bro.
21:57Joe Johnson:Yeah.
21:57Shannon Sharpe:A short cross, it don't get any simpler than that. Back foot hit, five, one, two, three, four, boom, ball gone.
22:03Joe Johnson:Yeah.
22:04Shannon Sharpe:That's it. It's simple. It ain't no read, no defense. But what he did, he got caught, and then he – Bro, you cannot throw the ball late. You throw the ball late in that league, in the league that you and I – Ocho, it's going the other way. Yes. It's going the other way. They're picking the ball. And you know that. I'm sure they instilled that in you at Alabama. I'm sure they tried to talk you through this your first year at Seattle. You can't be late with the football. These guys are too good. They're too well coached. They're schemed up. You throw that ball late, it's going the other way. I hope you can tackle because he catch that on a dead run you got to realize he's going one way the office is going the other way yeah offensive lineman ain't really built to tackle so we're gonna hope uh we're gonna see we're gonna I think the last game I think Trubisky and and and Milrow would take all the reps I don't see a scenario obviously Sam Donald hadn't played the first two games so I don't see him playing the last game.
23:07Shannon Sharpe:And even Drew Locke will probably sit out because I think Drew Locke is clearly the number two quarterback. And basically, they'll probably give Trubisky the first half. They'll let Milrow take the second half.

26:54Joe Johnson:You're not hired just to fill time and space. You're hired to fill the space with you. You have something in your guts. You go with it. And Shawn Johnson recalled the moment she realized her now husband, Andrew, was the one. He was just so unapologetically himself and knew nothing of Hollywood. He hadn't been on a plane before without his family. It was so pure. Listen to Joy 101 with Hoda Kotb on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
27:28Shannon Sharpe:Todd Munkin was asked about Deshaun's postgame comments. He had some very interesting things to say about it. Let's take a listen to what Mr. Munkin had to say. Let me hear this. How's it feel to get booed? I mean, it's a pretty easy question. It sucks. I don't want to get booed. It comes with the territory. You don't want to get booed? Let's play good football. Let's play good at quarterback. Let's play good on offense. Let's play good as a team. And then you don't have to worry about all that because it can turn just like that. Win, play good football, and everybody will be fine. That's just part of it.
28:03I mean, so I told him, you good? We're good. Part of what we do. What'd you see on the...
28:10Joe Johnson:Hey, Unc, Joe, what I said last night, Joe?
28:13Shannon Sharpe:What?
28:14Joe Johnson:Winning cures all, Unc.
28:16Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. Even if you don't win, if you play good football, Ocho.
28:19Joe Johnson:He ain't been playing good football, let alone winning. Yeah, that too. Listen, the two go hand in hand because if you're winning, obviously you've got to be playing good football to win. True. So let's start there first. We're playing good football. Trying to do what I don't want him to do. This is what I don't like. This is what I don't like the pressure all the booing I still want you to be able to play freely. I don't want you to tense up I don't want you to be scared to make certain throws because what you get is you get a you get a Deshaun Watson That's a shell of himself. That's not playing to his full potential because he wants to do everything right He wants to do everything perfect the best version of the best version The ISO Joe is when you're free out there being able to play ball without worrying about making mistakes that's when you're at your best now at the quarterback position right now especially with the shawls are going through i want him to have that that that that that not i hate i hate saying this that not give a feeling not about how the how the fans are feeling but when it comes to his play and being a process information and wanting to make plays don't be scared to do certain stuff just do it just go play freely hey that's that's ran his course ocho okay ocho is
29:21Chad Johnson:I'm just keeping it real, man. It's ran its course. You know, listening to Deshaun talk, he just seems like he's kind of out of it. And the fact that he's kind of against the fans at this point, y 'all know the fans, hell, they the one who paid the salaries. Y 'all know that, right?
29:38Shannon Sharpe:You can't win against them. You can't. You need them on your side. Man, what?
29:43Chad Johnson:That young man needs a change of scenery. Okay, Ojo, I'm sorry. Cleveland just ain't the spot. and Todd Munkin say he's going to announce the start of tomorrow, I expect for it to be Shadoua Sanders. That's just what I see.
29:58Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, I think the thing is Todd put the nail on the head when he said, look, you don't want to get booed, play better football. It's really as simple as that. Just play better football. Give them something to cheer about. Right now you're giving them boo play. So they're booing. If they see something they don't like, they're going to boo. Every time. Every single time. And I think the thing is what Deshaun is missing is that, yes, what transpired in Houston happened years ago. Some people have forgiven you and moved on. Some people haven't. You must understand and accept those that have given you grace and those that haven't.
30:44Shannon Sharpe:It's okay because you couldn't please everybody. just like you had some fans that like you, some fans that didn't like you. Now, Ocho, we've been there. We've been there. I'm sure there's some people that got off the Shannon Sharp train, and I understand it. I'm not upset at you. It's life. That's what happens. And maybe they were just looking for an opportunity to jump off Ocho and Joe.
31:08Chad Johnson:Yeah.
31:09Shannon Sharpe:We gave them that. Yeah. Now all I can do is just to go play, be at my absolute best. Mm-hmm. That's all I could do. All I could do is come out here with me and Ocho. It was just Ocho and I. And every single night had to show up, put my best foot forward, and pretend like I was dying inside. To pretend like nothing is bothering me. Like the comments that I cannot see. But I can't let that impact me. Because now I've already impacted enough people. Now the last thing I want to have happen is to have this thing go sideways. And now I'm really impacting Ocho. At least if we go on, I can still make payroll.
31:49Shannon Sharpe:I can still pay my employees because of my bonehead decisions and putting them at risk. So I understand perfectly. If anybody understands what Deshaun Watson is going through, it is one Shannon Sharp. Right. But Deshaun, you have to understand. Some people, as I said before, have given you grace, said, hey, he made a mistake and moved on. some people have not and will not you have to accept that be okay with that still put the blinders on and look straight ahead down the field if they boo they boo if they cheer they cheer but all the thing i can't control because you can't control the booing or the cheering except with your play yeah give them something to cheer for and you know what i'm less to boo about yeah i'm
32:36Joe Johnson:glad you said that too uncle joe when i think about it i think about when baker mayfield was with Cleveland. You know what they did at one point when they weren't winning?
32:42Chad Johnson:What's that?
32:43Joe Johnson:They booed Baker. Yeah! I think about Sam Donnell when Sam Donnell was with the Jets. You know what they did to Sam Donnell? We wasn't playing well.
32:50Shannon Sharpe:What's that?
32:50Joe Johnson:They booed him. Now those two Zach Wilson booed him. Oh yeah. Now those people, those two quarterbacks right now have made their way in situations where it's more cheers than it is booed. So now Deshaun, he's in Cleveland right now. I don't know what Todd Mungan, what decision he's going to make tomorrow come tomorrow. But if, if just so, if just so happened and he becomes the starter. And Todd Munkin decides to roll with him. He has to do everything in his power to play good football. Forget the winning, forget the win, but the wins and losses come on your shoulders because you're the one that gets to touch the ball the most.
33:24Joe Johnson:Yep. You control everything. So listen, I'm a football fan and I want to see everybody win and they respect the craft. Even though I played for the Bengals, I want to see Deshaun do well. I want to see the Browns do well, except when they play the Bengals. especially with the constant discourse and dialogue surrounding the Browns for so long I just want to see Deshaun win I just want to see him win
33:50Shannon Sharpe:Joe let me ask you this do you believe his comments at the podium last night at the presser do you believe that will have any impact on the decision the Browns make who their starting quarterback will be week one
34:02Chad Johnson:yes and I think Todd Monken when he spoke today he wasn't being wholeheartedly truthful you know that you that has to make a difference man listen we talking about deshaun feels like since he's gotten to cleveland archa ultra what four years ago here they ain't cheered for him since he got there he been getting booed since he been there man ain't nothing changed bro you can tell in that man post post interview how he spoke and how he talked about the fans he said it was deeper than just his play which is really honestly i don't really think it is i think hell if he played pretty good, they wouldn't boo as much as they did, especially yesterday.
34:39Chad Johnson:But for the most part, if he come out, if he balled out, Uncle Ocho, man, them folks won't be booing. They booing because of your play. But he feels it's deeper rooted than that.
34:49Shannon Sharpe:It is. Because you came to Cleveland with a stench on you. They knew about that. We got to be real. The one thing that we're going to do here at NICAL, we're going to have real, honest conversations. Deshaun, they saw what the baggage that you came with. Now, with that baggage, you didn't help your situation that you played. You were suspended to begin with. And then you played the last five games. You were awful. Let's not sugarcoat it. He was awful, Chad. You know it. I know it. Joe knows it. Ocho knows it. He was bad. So how can I cheer? I want to cheer because you play for my team. You play for the team that I grew up watching.
35:31Shannon Sharpe:You play for the team that my father grew up watching. My grandfather grew up watching. And you were supposed to be the quarterback that we have not really had since Otto Graham and Bernie Kosar. You were supposed to be it. They've been looking for a quarterback for the better part of 40 years. And they believe they have finally got him. And come to find out he's playing just as bad as all the other quarterbacks they've had, the 25, 30 quarterbacks that they've had up until they got Deshaun. Now, you get hurt the next year. You hurt your shoulder. But you're playing bad. Guess what? You come back the next year.
36:09Shannon Sharpe:You tear your Achilles. And guess what? After you tear your Achilles, you end up ripping again. You don't come back at all.
36:18Chad Johnson:Yeah.
36:19Shannon Sharpe:The last memory they have of you, of you playing bad, and even when you get – and I'm not excusing this. So, Chad, please don't get me wrong. Don't get me wrong. I'm not excusing them booing a player that's injured. I'm not. So I don't want people to say, well, you make it seem. No, I'm not saying that. All I'm saying is, is that the last thing that they remember is that you were playing bad before you got injured.
36:45Chad Johnson:Yeah.
36:46Shannon Sharpe:That's what they remember. You didn't give them anything really to cheer about. I don't think, Deshaun, he might have 100, 300-yard game since he's been in Cleveland. Ash, look that up for me.
36:58Shannon Sharpe:and you could tell when he was talking last night this has been on his mind this has been in his heart for a minute he didn't really say what he wanted to say because he understood what it was going to be it still was trending but this thing would have trended for days had he really spoke how he really felt so with that being said it's a
37:25Shannon Sharpe:his play has not been exemplary. His play has not been what to write home about. His play has not been cheerworthy. And I cannot in good conscience cheer just because you – I mean, and some people do. Some people like, no, come hell or high water, I'm going to cheer for my team. Right. But as Todd Munkin said in his early press conference, because I heard the entirety of it, he's like, look, if you order a meal, you order your soup, and it come out cold, Yeah, you're going to be pissed. Yeah. I'm paying for this. The fans are paying to see good football. You haven't given them that. And I know it's frustrating.
38:04Shannon Sharpe:I know. But at the end of the day, you walk by a bunch of them things every day. Even if they're not mirrors, they're reflected glass and you can see yourself. We don't have anybody to blame but ourselves.
38:14Chad Johnson:Alone.
38:15Shannon Sharpe:That's it. Alone. So if you thought having that outburst or what they call it, Ocho, anytime you say something that doesn't follow the guidelines, they call it ranting. If you thought that rant was going to elicit your sympathy, if anything, it drove people further the other way.
38:34Chad Johnson:Yeah, probably. So think about this. So think about this, Ocho. Let's say tomorrow Ty Munkendu announced Shador as a starter. Man, you can't have that man out there, Deshaun Watson, has no backup. Think about what 18 weeks will look like, even if he do happen to touch the damn field. Man, them folks don't. I'm going to keep it real with y 'all. I don't know if y 'all know, but them folks in Cleveland don't want to see that. I'm sorry.
38:58Joe Johnson:They don't.
38:59Chad Johnson:They don't. They made that clear, too. Hey, Uncle Joe, at what point, as much as the fans are responsible
39:07Joe Johnson:for most of the success when it comes to the players being paid, teams having success who makes the final call at the end of the day regardless of how the fans feel
39:17Chad Johnson:owners
39:19Joe Johnson:that's all it comes down to and the owner who write them checks Joe
39:23Chad Johnson:owners
39:23Joe Johnson:so who you think going to be the starting quarterback tomorrow
39:26Chad Johnson:Shador because I'm telling you if I'm tired why am I taking the job bro if I know I ain't going to have no damn say so who my quarterback going to be because there's only 32 of them
39:40Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, you got to. But I'm saying somebody telling you, Joe, you know what, Joe? We're going to get you a job in the NBA. But them shots that you got in college, don't even think about shooting them. You said no or you said okay?
39:52Chad Johnson:Hold on, but what I'm saying is, okay, I got three quarterbacks I can choose for. Now, the least I can do is Ty Monken. I can have a quarterback battle. Okay, Ocho, I ain't giving nobody nothing. I'm going to let all y 'all compete and play. Now, if Shadu has outplayed him and he deserves a starting job, how do you make Deshaun a backup, bro? That's what I'm saying. I think. Oh, I don't believe.
40:13Shannon Sharpe:I don't believe. That's where we do agree. You and I agree. But in situations like this, there are certain situations. Cleveland and Dallas are two. All you do is coach the team. You don't have no say over the 53. You don't have no say over the draft. You don't have no say over free agency. There's only 32 of those guys. There are 32 NFL head coaches of eight billion people in the world. I got one of those jobs. Sometimes you just sit down at STF. up and keep it moving. And keep it moving. Because you want that job so bad. I'm a head coach? Think about it. He was a coordinator at Georgia, coordinator for what, two years, three years at Baltimore?
40:58Shannon Sharpe:And now he a head coach. That's fast tracking, Joe. That's fast tracking.
41:04Chad Johnson:And we're going to, hey, y 'all sound like y 'all want to put something on there. Y 'all put a little wage on it?
41:09Shannon Sharpe:No, no, no. I'm not saying. I'm not. Look, whatever decision is made is going to be made by the front office. It's going to come out of the mouth of Todd Munkin.
41:18Chad Johnson:Yeah.
41:19Shannon Sharpe:But it's going to be made. It's just like that decision with Luka. They blame Nico Harrison. Oh, Nico Harrison trades. He ain't trading nobody. Dumont traded him.
41:31Chad Johnson:Think about this, though. Cleveland right now is in an uproar behind this whole thing, especially Deshaun Watson post-game interview. Yeah. And they going to lose it, bro, if Todd Monken announced that he's the starting quarterback tomorrow. They going to lose it. The fans of Cleveland going to lose it, bro. Hey, Uncle Joe, they going to lose it.
41:59Joe Johnson:I'm telling you now, Joe, I don't want you to be upset when we come on the show tomorrow night, and I'm not even going to say I told you so because I've been right all year, so I'm kind of used to winning. i'm kind of used to being right but i know i know what they're gonna make i know what decision they gonna make up there and even in being you think about the part of um let's say okay they they named your door think about this this uh this concept they named you're the starter all right it's no point in having deshaun watson making 40 46 million dollars sitting on our bench that just makes no sense you got to cut ties with him auto in this they're not going to do that either oh we're going to cut them and we still 46 million that just makes absolutely no sense i mean from a from a business perspective not forget football oh joe the broncos owned uh they had they took
42:40Shannon Sharpe:an 85 million dollar cap hit with russ what did the packers take damn near 100 million with with with uh rogers hold on man you know that money don't mean nothing to them did you just name did
42:50Joe Johnson:you just did you just compare the organizations the packers organization hey we already know what the doo-doo browns do okay how you think they got the name you can't compare you can't compare those two organizations, two winning organizations that consistently... Well, that's where you can't compete
43:05Shannon Sharpe:where you can't compare.
43:06Joe Johnson:Yep, there we go. Take your time.
43:08Shannon Sharpe:We're going to talk about a situation where the defensive end from Seattle got too close to the quarterback. Yeah. What Mike McDonald do? Took his ass out of practice. Yeah. Stay away from the quarterback. Cleveland, what they do? They knock hell out of Shadour. You see the difference? You ain't competing where you can't compare. If I can't compare winning organizations, If I got, think about what you said, Ocho. Yeah. Look at the organization you just named. There it is. Yeah. That makes all the money. Deshaun Watson has not had a single. Deshaun Watson didn't have a single in seven games in 2024.
43:49Shannon Sharpe:He did not have a 200-yard passing game. His last passing 200-yard game came in 2023. three. Damn.
44:02Hey.
44:04Chad Johnson:And think about this. As a rookie last year, hell, if I ain't mistaken, I think Shadour is the only rookie that throw for 300. They have a 300-yard game last year. I think he the only rookie to have a 300-yard game last year. I'm trying to go.
44:19Shannon Sharpe:Who was the quarterback? Cam Ward, Tyler Shook. I don't know. Maybe Shook. we'll get to that Joe Albert Briss says I went to yesterday pretty certain that Deshaun Watson was going to be the Brown starter now I'm not sure he's going to be on the team the press conference is going to be difficult to come back from we'll see what the decision makers reckon with Browns anticipate naming their starting quarterback tomorrow according to Todd Munkin who is Munkin is announcing the starter I'm going to lean with Joe the only thing I've said I just believe they should have cut Deshaun Watson they made a situation they exacerbated the situation They could have made this decision easy from the jump.
44:59Chad Johnson:Now, listen, now you just gone cut ties with them, Arke Ocho. Deal with the riff that's going to come behind it. But, hell, put that behind you, bro, and try to move forward with these young guys. Let you do it. Have a full season and then make a break. See what he got. See what he can do. But you just sit him for the first four weeks and then – No, man. Come on, man.
45:21Shannon Sharpe:I don't see – I don't see – I don't think they're going to be an uproar. I don't think the Cleveland Prounds are going to be a pro. Oh, I can't believe y 'all did Deshaun like this. I don't believe anybody's going to say that. I don't believe anybody has that kind of – because he hasn't given you – everything that we're basing it on, we're basing it on the last time we saw him play, Ocho. Yeah. That's what we're basing this on. There's nothing that he's shown in Cleveland that should be able to convince you that he can replicate what he did in Houston. You've seen absolutely nothing.
45:54Chad Johnson:He'll shell himself, bro.
45:55Shannon Sharpe:And even the offensive line was terrible. His offensive line, go back and look it up at how many times he was sacked. His offensive line was terrible. Now, he did have D-Hop. And D-Hop balled with anybody. Case Keenum, he played at Cleveland. He played at the Patriots. It didn't matter who the quarterback was. D-Hop was that good in his prime. Brian Hoyer, that's who it was. Brian Hoyer, that's the guy we got to take on chat. So I don't – I just don't – I'm leaning towards what Joe's saying, that hey, Shadour's going to get named a starter, and Deshaun will probably end up getting released. But I just felt they should have released him before the season.
46:41Shannon Sharpe:That's what I told you, Ocho, just release him before the season because I don't believe he can do enough to win over that fan base. It's just – and I don't think it's 50 – It's not like 50 % of fans love Deshaun, like, love, like Deshaun, and 50 % don't. It's like 90-10, 95-5. Hey.
47:03Joe Johnson:It's bad. You can win that 95, you can win that 95 over now.
47:07Chad Johnson:Nah, it's a wrap, Ocho. I don't even see how you can see some good in it. I can't even see no good that's gonna come out of this. I'm sorry. I don't know.
47:15Joe Johnson:I'm just putting myself in his shoes, Joe. I'm just putting myself in his shoes, like if it was me. You hear me? Joe, I went over the whole city, Joe. I just need the opportunity, you hear me? That's how I think. I just need the opportunity. I need the opportunity to make up for what I've done wrong. For the taste I left for your mouth. I just need the opportunity, that's it.
47:36Shannon Sharpe:Hey, everybody. Damn, little pause now. Pause, pause.
47:40Joe Johnson:What'd I say?
47:41Shannon Sharpe:You know what you just said? Yeah.
47:43Joe Johnson:Little taste in your mouth. That's pause worthy?
47:49Shannon Sharpe:Oh, you don't think it's pause worthy? You see, Joe, that's Paul's worth it for the taste I left in your mouth.
47:54Joe Johnson:I mean, based on the context I'm talking about, it's really not that bad.
47:57Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, we don't care about no context, because I told him when I said, hey, I'm talking football. I said, man, they be banging on you. You're like, oh, Paul. Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. See? Hey, that's a little bit more egregious. I was talking football. Hey, Joe. Hey, Joe. You see what I'm saying, Joe? You see? We talking football. And now he done go to it. He go win. He go win. Hey, that's why y 'all one and two.
48:22Chad Johnson:That's why y 'all one and two. I expect that. Hey, I expect that from y 'all. I'll just keep it real. Yeah.
48:28Joe Johnson:Think about it, Joe. If I say I left a bad taste in your mouth, right? Yeah. Even talking football, that's like, eh. But if I say banging and banging, like, oh, whoa, whoa. But I'm talking about football.
48:39Shannon Sharpe:I said, hey, I said, you playing football, and them guys banging on you and banging on you. You're like, whoa, whoa, whoa, we talking football. Just the same thing. Hey, son, hit the hole. We talking football. What did they say? Pause.
48:52Chad Johnson:Yeah.
48:53Shannon Sharpe:No, not with the young guys.
48:56Chad Johnson:Hey. I just think, man.
48:59Shannon Sharpe:Shuck threw for 333 against the Titans and 308 against the Jets. Shadour threw for 364 against the Titans and became the second quarterback since Rodgers in 2000 to have four completions of 50 or more yards in each of his first three starts. So he was playing. He was playing. Shadour played really well. We got to cut down. The two things I think he needs to work on, and hopefully he spent some time in the offseason going back watching the tape, is the interceptions and the sacks. Yeah. Yeah.
49:28Chad Johnson:He's been getting it up out of there pretty quick, though, as of late. And, you know, especially this last game, he's been getting out of there quick. But, yeah, I'm with you. Them interceptions, them INTs. If he don't throw that one, I'm telling y 'all, and they go down there and score.
49:42Shannon Sharpe:It's a great day. It's a great day. You're right, Joe. You're right. Oh, another guy we didn't talk about, old Will Levis. Hey.
49:53Joe Johnson:Hey, how Will look? I stopped watching the game when it took me a cigar break. Like Levi's? Wait, Levi's some good jeans, man.
50:02Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, that's how he looks, still.
50:08Shannon Sharpe:That was my point. But anyway, back to Shaduwa and the Browns look. I think Todd Munkin can really ingratiate himself with this fan base, with the city of Cleveland. I think he can win over a lot of people making this decision.
50:28Shannon Sharpe:But me personally, I don't think it's his decision to make.
50:34Joe Johnson:Nope, absolutely not.
50:36Chad Johnson:But even if you're up top, what do you see that's going to possess you to be like, okay, cool, we gonna start Deshaun week one, he gonna be out, I just, I don't see it, I don't see it guys. I'm, chat, I don't know what y 'all see, but from watching that interview, man, it told me a lot, bro.
50:54Joe Johnson:Oh, hey, hey, hey, listen, the chat is gonna agree with you, Joe. The chat is gonna agree with you. The chat feel the same way you do. Matter of fact, everybody probably feels the exact same way you do. I'm thinking like the man sitting upstairs who signed into that check, I'm thinking like him. If I was going to let him go, he would have been going already. So we had a clean slate with the door, taking all the reps from day one, when training camp started. The fact that they made it a quarterback competition and one makes so much more than the other. As a owner, I'm always going with the money man until he loses a job.
51:28Joe Johnson:And that was the first time when we talked about this, I said, is Deshaun Watson job to lose regardless of anything.
51:34Shannon Sharpe:He might've lost it. Ocho with his play at that commentary after the press, after the post game, He might have lost it.
51:40Joe Johnson:Hey, listen, I'm all for two being in at the start. I'm all for two. You know that. I'm all for it. But I'm thinking of the other side of the spectrum.
51:50Shannon Sharpe:Well, the best part about it is that before you go, Joe, the best part about it, we're going to be on tomorrow night. So we'll find out. So we'll have a lot to talk about. That's going to be the number one lead. That'll be the number one lead. The topic, that'll be the A block, the entire A block. So we'll find out very soon. So, hold on. This decision might be made by the time we wake up in the morning. Yeah. Think so? Oh, somebody gonna leak it? Adam Schefter gonna leak it. Adam Schefter, Jeremy Fowler, somebody gonna leak it.
52:22Chad Johnson:Hey, and to kinda speak with y 'all two talking about, Uncle Ocho, the reason why Cleveland brought him in, hell, we paying him a lot of money. We gotta get some good labor out of his ass too now. You know, hey, hey, hey, we need some help throughout the preseason. Like I said, the least we can do is give him an opportunity to see how he look out there. I think they gave him that opportunity. They seen tomorrow they're going to make a big decision, bro.
52:47Shannon Sharpe:A very, very, very big decision. Yeah. So tomorrow, Chad, the Browns are going to make a decision who will be they started for week one.
53:00Shannon Sharpe:Because you still have – but the fact look what your backups are you got a rookie a project rookie and the guy from Arkansas Joe yeah and then you got and then you got Dylan Gabriel who can't break a window pane with a brick
53:19Chad Johnson:you anticipating that Shadouar gonna be able to hold up throughout the season
53:23Shannon Sharpe:well you gotta break I think they break somebody in
53:27Chad Johnson:you think so
53:28Shannon Sharpe:I do but you definitely
53:31Chad Johnson:can't i just don't man listen and y 'all allow me the right to be wrong okay ocho because i could be but it's just gonna be hard pressed for me to see deshaun as the backup qb and they just still have
53:43Shannon Sharpe:him on the team no no no no no no no no i don't think he'll be the backup qb i think he'll be i think you'll get released yeah that's what i think my only thing was i thought they should
53:49Chad Johnson:have did that in the off season gotta get that laid by them huh we owe him too much money
53:55Shannon Sharpe:unless you win your super bowl there's no way you can justify what you paid if you win a Super Bowl Ocho it doesn't matter I give you a prime example the Seahawks with Percy Harvey ran the kickoff back in the Super Bowl it was worth it he win him a Super Bowl the 230 Cleveland Cleveland fans will say y 'all should have gave him 500 million to win a Super Bowl it's the difference between trying to talk to your friends over the music at a bar and having dinner where you can actually hear each other. Between getting food delivered and cooking something you know she's going to love. It's the difference between a rough nicotine pouch and On Plus nicotine pouches with Nico Silk Mash.

55:20I'm going to have to look up this story. I'm obsessed. I'm obsessed. From best-selling authors and your favorite book talk creators to the latest pop culture moments, nothing is off the table. It's like if you can hide some real messages inside compelling characters, then that is a Trojan horse. Whether you're looking for literary deep dives, smart pop culture conversations, or a community of readers who love to think a little too much, you're in the right place. On the new podcast, Solita, we share the messy reality of traveling alone as a woman.
56:01I can wait four hours for the next bus, or this random dude is offering me a ride on his motorcycle. I chose option B. I'm Julie Pinheiro, and I travel by myself because it's a rare space where I can say yes without asking anyone else first. I'm on a mission to reclaim the word solita, trading the pity for possibility. Every time I tried to be alone, I kept meeting people and they were like, you smiled at us, not a lot of people smile around here. It's when you're alone that you're most receptive to the world as it is and not the lies you're sold about it. It can be a time where you push your limits, change your mind, or wake up to a new version of yourself.
56:42So whether you're a solo travel veteran or you're too nervous to book your first trip, I hope you listen to Solita on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I'm Hoda Kotb, host of the podcast Joy 101 with Hoda Kotb. If you know me, you know I'm always searching for inspiration and useful tools to maximize joy. So this podcast lets us uncover those things together through meaningful conversations with fascinating people. Like when my friend Henry Winkler offered advice to aspiring actors and really anybody hoping to stand out. You're not hired just to fill time and space.
57:25You're hired to fill the space with you.
57:57Our town is small taters by most standards, right? but to the people who grew up here, it's everything. What happens when a quiet Tennessee town becomes the front line in a battle over the future of America? Developers with right-wing ties have purchased hundreds of acres of land in the area. The first thing you see when it pops up is pioneers in Appalachia. But they weren't just planting houses. We need cities on a shining hill that exemplify and embody the Christian way of life. Stop right there. Is that normal? A podcast about what happens when a small town becomes the site of a social experiment.
58:34God need men to rule. Great. And decides to fight back. Do not use my hard work to sell your bull. They're not just opposing what's being planned for here. Our hometown is not a test tube. They feel like they're standing in opposition to an entire administration. Guess you didn't move in on a bunch of dumb hillbillies now, did you? Listen to Our Town on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
59:02Shannon Sharpe:No, no, they're not winning the Super Bowl. Absolutely not. The Browns are waving tight end Daquan Wright. And if he clears waiver, he has an agreement in place to go play for the 2026 LSU Tigers. Wright is believed to be the first player who could play at the NFL team and then go back and play in college. Here's Todd Munkin on his former player ending the transfer portal. Let's take a listen. How you been handling the Daquan Wright situation just seems weird, right?
59:30Chad Johnson:It seems like he's in the college transfer portal again practice, but then I saw him warming up after the rain delay today. Man, this is crazy. I mean, I don't even know what to say. I mean, as far as I know, he's had a medical issue that wasn't allowing him to practice. this um that's a medical you know uh issue it's nothing to do with me you know and then uh but and then he was cleared so we dressed him just in case we had to have him but when you don't rep it's hard to put him on the field jt that was out there so we didn't want to get blake hurt and he's only been with us a week and we had a number of things where browns hurt browns and which to the naked eye you won't see but we had a number of things that way when you're putting in guys that that haven't really been there.
1:00:19And some of that's true and some of it, you know, isn't good enough for us as coaches once they go out there. But, I mean, I don't know what to say. I mean, you know, I wondered why Lane Kiffin reached out a week ago. Now I know. I mean, shit, I didn't know. Now I know. I didn't call him back. Now I guess I should have. Appreciate you. Thank you.
1:00:44Shannon Sharpe:Well, thank you. He is entertaining. Todd Munkin is very entertaining.
1:00:47Chad Johnson:He a ringmaster with the media.
1:00:51Shannon Sharpe:Guys, under no circumstance can you convince me. This is not what the transfer portal, this wasn't what it was supposed to be. This wasn't what it meant to be, Joe. This ain't what it meant to be, Ocho. A guy go to the NFL. He doesn't make the team. If another team doesn't pick him up, he gets to go back to college? I thought once you declared for the draft, Now, they would give you X amount of days to take your name out of the draft, Joe. Or once you went past that deadline, Ocho, you had to stay in the draft. Right. But now, you can go not only if they're not a deadline, you can go all the way, get drafted, or become a free agent.
1:01:34Shannon Sharpe:Practice, play, get a bonus. I ain't saying you're getting millions of dollars, but you're getting something. Yeah. And then say, you know what, man, this ain't working out for me. Man, let me go back and play in college. Man, that is so wrong. That is so, so wrong. NCAA, y 'all need to get y 'all stuff together. Congress, court system, y 'all know this ain't right. I mean, we having a conversation, but this should take like five minutes. Yeah. If y 'all don't get y 'all rushed ass and try to make a football team
1:02:05Joe Johnson:or go get a regular job, y 'all got to take y 'all big asses back to college. It shouldn't take five minutes. It shouldn't take five minutes at all. But one, obviously, it's a dream of yours, obviously, you know, to want to play in the NFL. If you don't make it into the NFL, there are other leagues that you can go play in. You can play in the CFL. You can play arena ball. But going back to college, to me, it just makes no sense in general. If anything, you want to better yourself to try to get an opportunity to make an NFL team somewhere. Work on your craft. Going back to college does you no justice.
1:02:38Joe Johnson:Does you no justice at all? Because you've already played in college. You weren't good enough to make an NFL team. Why would you go back to college?
1:02:44Shannon Sharpe:Because you want to dominate because you couldn't. And y 'all in the chat talking about, oh, you hating. Y 'all dumb. To think a guy that can go get drafted, go get drafted, whether he got drafted or he was an undrafted free agent, go play in NFL and go back to college? Do you know, Ocho, just imagine you go for the Bengals and say, you know what, man, y 'all ain't playing me. I'm going back to college. Do you know what you would have did to college kids? knowing what you know after being in the NFL just for three, just for a month, just for two months. Do you understand? Y 'all don't understand it.
1:03:21Shannon Sharpe:What a NFL player would do if he just goes and gets coaching from NFL coaches and be on the NFL team for those two months, let alone he been on there for four, so he got drafted in April, May, June, July, August. So four months and go back to college, if he's worth anything, he should destroy those college kids.
1:03:45Joe Johnson:You heard the key thing? If he's worth anything. Was he good when he was in college? Was he drafted high to begin with? So maybe he's really not that good. So the fact that he does go back, it really doesn't make any sense if he wasn't even that boy when he was in college the first time.
1:03:59Shannon Sharpe:Where do we stop it, Ocho? Okay, Ocho, where do we stop it? I go to college. So if I go to college and things don't go my way, I'm 17 years old. I get to go back to high school? Why not? Where we stopping it, Joe?
1:04:17Chad Johnson:Listen, I think –
1:04:18Shannon Sharpe:If I'm a freshman, do I get to go back to junior high? That's a good one. You're going down a slippery slope.
1:04:28Chad Johnson:Hey, listen, the system is definitely messed up, but I think y 'all gripes and groans at the wrong person, the player. It's not his damn fault they got all these loopholes in there to where guys can go back to college. Hell, Peter Powell said try it all. Hey, look, it ain't working right here. It ain't working in Cleveland. Look, let me go back to college here. Lane Kiffin probably got a little bag over there for him. Hell, he probably feel like – He do. Yeah, he probably feel like I go dominate in college. Like y 'all say, he probably wasn't good from the first. But, hell, if I can go dominate in college and give me another bag, hey, man, why not?
1:05:00Chad Johnson:I think we need to be mad at the system versus the player. He's just taking advantage of the loopholes that's in the system.
1:05:09Shannon Sharpe:I get your prime example, Ocho. It's like when parents hold their kids back so they can be older and competing. No, no, no, Joe, don't be against that. No, no, no, no. You say Peter Paul, what did Peter Paul say? Oh, Joe.
1:05:20Chad Johnson:He said try it all, Peter Paul. Okay, we tried it all then.
1:05:23Shannon Sharpe:I'm blessed here, I said Joe. And Joe was against that. Joe is against parents holding their kids back to compete against younger children so they can dominate them. Yeah. So they look better.
1:05:35Chad Johnson:Yeah.
1:05:35Shannon Sharpe:Hell, if he ain't good enough, man,
1:05:37Chad Johnson:go get him up out of here, man. Well, I be damned. Now we talking about professional athletes, because in the NFL they get paid, and in college they getting paid. They getting paid in high school too, Joe. Yeah, some of them are getting a little, they getting a little money. You get the million dollars. Yeah. Is that a little something? No, that's a lot of something, yeah.
1:05:58Shannon Sharpe:In high school? Man, please. But yeah. 50 ,000, 100 ,000 is a lot of something for a high schooler.
1:06:05Chad Johnson:Man, what are you talking about? But I just think the system messed up, man. And I think when they started doing the NIL, it's so many loopholes now, guys.
1:06:15Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, they didn't really have a system in place. And how to – what's the word I want to do? Oversee it. And it's just like – it was just a wild, wild west. Yeah. You got money? Okay, I'm going there. You got money? No, I'm leaving here and going there. And guys now, just like – it's hard to coach a guy. because the first time you say something sideways, oh, he jumping in that portal.
1:06:42Chad Johnson:Yeah, oh, yeah, yeah. You can't get no guy. He jumping in the portal. You can't give him no criticism. I mean, it's just so tough. Think about this. Guys who are coming out of high school, Uncle Ocho, 17, 18 years old, hell, if you ain't that boy, your ass ain't going to get to play nowhere. You ain't going to get to play nowhere.
1:07:04Shannon Sharpe:And this really hurts high schoolers. So you basically got to be a four or five star now because the portal is so wide open and teams want people from the portal because they've already been in college. They already know about study hall. They already know about lifting. They already know about the practice schedule. So I'm getting a guy that's already been in the system before.
1:07:25Chad Johnson:Experience. They want an experienced guy. Hey, man, these dudes are getting paid now. We can't. Hey, man, look, if I'm the head coach of a collegiate sport, hey, man, I want the best opportunity for my team to win. And they willing to, hey, look, look at Lane Kiffin. Lane Kiffin say, man, they done gave me all this money at LSU. Yeah, boy, I got to try to deliver a natty. Hey, hey, whoever can help me, please, come on, come back. Yeah.
1:07:51Shannon Sharpe:Terrell Pryor should say, I'm going back. Y 'all took my eligibility. I'm going back, get my little years. Damn, Terrell Pryor played in the league by 10, 11, 12 years. That ain't got nothing to do with it. They took his college career from him. They took a year from him. Go back and get that one year. Hey, I told you I wanted to go back then. You tell me. Man, Joe, you old enough to be a granddad. He out there trying to do with them 18, 19 old kids, don't Joe. Hey. Hey. He out there, hey, he talking all night. I tell my man, I hit him up for 40 tonight. I'm like, really, Joe? Yeah, I dropped a 40 ball.
1:08:27Chad Johnson:Hey. Well, listen. Hey, hold on, hold on. But while we talking though, hey, man, I feel like I don't know what's going on in these times that we living in because when I see Ennis Cantor tonight at that WNBA game, I don't know if we're going to talk about that. Come on, man. This thing ain't getting out of hand, bro.
1:08:44Shannon Sharpe:Hold on. What do you do? We can talk about it. Ash might have it on the schedule. We might talk about it a little later. What did you say, Ocho? No, I'll wait until we get to it. But I just don't – I mean, in college, Congress, y 'all got to get a hold on this. Y 'all got to put some rules in place because this thing right now is operating like the wild, wild west, and anything goes. And anytime you got a system where anything goes, it's just a matter of time before it goes haywire. This is why a lot of these coaches, because they see where this thing was headed. They're like, man, I can't be a part of this.
1:09:23Now, as long as it leveled the playing fields,
1:09:28Shannon Sharpe:as long as they had a decided advantage,
1:09:31Joe Johnson:they was okay with it.
1:09:32Shannon Sharpe:They was okay with it.
1:09:35Chad Johnson:Yeah, like your boy out there, Saban in Alabama.
1:09:39Shannon Sharpe:Saban, OJK, Roy Williams. There are a lot of them. Yes, there are a lot of them. Dabo Sweeney said if the players start getting paid, he was going to retire. Well, they're going to be getting paid for about five years now. And he's still coaching. Yeah, he ain't going nowhere. Hell no. He ain't giving up his$11,$12 million salary, but he don't want the players to get nothing.
1:10:00Joe Johnson:Nah, it's coaching.
1:10:01Shannon Sharpe:And how do you think he got that$11,$12 million? Hello.
1:10:05Chad Johnson:Hello.
1:10:07Shannon Sharpe:I don't have, I don't, look, I draw the line with this. You go to the NFL, you go to the NBA, you got to stay. You either make it in the NBA or the NFL, or you go get you a regular job. You got to take your ass back.
1:10:19Joe Johnson:Not even a regular job, Uncle Joe. if you love the sport, if you love the sport of football and you don't make it in the NFL, you continue to train at the NFL level. Going back to college is not going to get you any better. Dominating against players that are probably not going to make it to the NFL that you're trying to get yourself into isn't going to help you improve at all because you didn't make it the first time. To me, it makes no sense. I mean, I wish Young Bull all the luck, but hell, he was hurt.
1:10:50Shannon Sharpe:He couldn't stay He couldn't even get healthy in Cleveland.
1:10:52Joe Johnson:I mean, Mr. Munkin said it was a medical issue, right? Medical issue, yeah. So wouldn't you have the same medical issue going back to college?
1:11:00Chad Johnson:Man, that man ain't had no medical issue. That man, he had something in the bag. There you go. Hey, hey, hey, I'm reading the fine print, man. Y 'all ain't finna pull the wool over my eyes. I see what's going on. Hey, hey, but I do agree that you got to get a hold of this, Uncle Ocho, because think about this. come next year, hell, it could be three, four, five dudes who may try to pull this same exact thing. And now you just started a ripple effect.
1:11:25Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, a trend. Yeah. Oregon coach Dan Lanning sounds off on NFL players returning to college. You're a professional now. Once you declare for the draft, so let any of those players come back, fair or unfair to them, it's unfair to the sport. And I think it's unfair to the players that are current team for those guys trying to be coming back. Yeah. I agree. I 1 ,100 % 15 % agree.
1:11:55Chad Johnson:Out of control.
1:11:56Shannon Sharpe:Of all the things that I thought would happen to college sports in my lifetime, if somebody would have told me this, Ocho, that you have a guy go to the NBA or go to the NFL, not make it, get released, and have the ability to go back to college, where you started it, COVID Kobe really threw everything out of whack because you had guys that were 26 and 27 still on the college campus. Playing a college sport. Guys have his eighth year of eligibility. His ninth year of eligibility. Come on now. Now y 'all, come on. At some point in time, bro, you got to let it go.
1:12:35Joe Johnson:And when do you say these players are not very good anyway? When do we be honest? They're not very good anyway. They're not good enough to play on the NFL team, let alone make it. You know, you have 53 spots and you got 15 on the practice squad. They weren't good enough to do that. Therefore, I mean, we up and are about them going back to college. I mean, the chances are you're not going to be good enough to play back in college when you get there either.
1:13:01Chad Johnson:I disagree with that.
1:13:03Shannon Sharpe:No, they're going to be able to play back in college.
1:13:06Chad Johnson:Yeah, he's going to ball out in LSU. I don't know what LSU got or what that tight end room look like over there.
1:13:15Shannon Sharpe:I'm not familiar with it, Joe. I'm not familiar with it. Damn. But considering that Lane Kevin knows how to call an offense and knows how to get the ball, you look at what he was able to do with O.J. Howard. Now, I'm not saying this guy has O.J. Howard's skill set, but he knows how to get the ball to his weapons. That's one thing he can do. He can call an offense. You like him or dislike him, arrogant or whatever, he can call an offense. He can coach his ass off.
