In short

Sports recap and debate on three headline stories: Miami’s upset of Ohio State in the CFP quarterfinal (24-14), the Dallas Cowboys waiving cornerback Trevon Diggs and his pickup by the Green Bay Packers, and Anthony Edwards’ frustration with the Timberwolves.

Guests (podcast hosts)

Chad Ochocinco Johnson (former NFL Pro Bowler/All-Pro; Bengals ring of fame honoree) and “ISO Joe Johnson” (former pro; 7-time NBA All-Star with the Atlanta Hawks; Arkansas/Little Rock native). They discuss football and basketball from a player perspective.

Key claims

  1. Miami’s win was driven by Carson Beck’s protection and especially Miami’s defensive front controlling Ohio State’s run and pressuring the QB (five sacks).
  2. Ohio State wasn’t comfortable because Miami wasn’t in awe and won the “trenches” battle.
  3. Cowboys waived Diggs for “production and tolerance” issues, not just performance; protocol about traveling with the team was central.
  4. Diggs can still be effective in Green Bay, but may need time to acclimate and adjust after injury/decline.

Notable examples

  • Miami: Mark Fletcher 19 carries, 90 yards; Miami ran 37 times for 153; interception by a smoke-route read; defense shut down Ohio State’s ground game (45 yards on 24 carries).
  • Diggs: Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer cited team protocol; Packers sign Diggs after the waiver.
  • Edwards/Twolves: mentioned as a frustration theme, without specific game stats in the provided transcript.

Ocho, I guess that's why you paid that money, because Carson Banks was really good tonight. He didn't turn the ball over. He didn't put the ball in harm's way. And on that crucial third down, he did something in the fourth quarter that he didn't do in the second quarter to keep a drive alive.

2:40Shannon Sharpe:He slid. This time he lowered his head, got the first down, kept the drive alive, and they ended up going down to score, and they win by the score of 24-14. 4:30Shannon Sharpe:The Canes did what many didn't think they could do. They won. The 10-seeded Canes have upset the defending national champs. Miami is headed to the VRBO Fiesta Bowl where it'll await the win of the Ole Miss and Georgia. Carson Beck was 19-26, 138, one touchdown. Mark Fletcher ran the ball extremely hard tonight, 19 carries, 90 yards. They ran the ball 37 times for a buck 53. They got off to the great start. Their defense was outstanding. Bang is the real deal. Hey, JT, Jason Taylor has done an outstanding job with that defensive line, Ocho. They were getting out the sand. They were on his you-know-what.

5:10Shannon Sharpe:And they shut down the run, 25 carries. I mean, excuse me, 24 carries, 45 yards, 45. They had, what, five sacks for minus 42 yards. They did a number of attacking the quarterback. Once they realized they could not run the ball against that four, and that's what Miami Hurricanes, that's what they're known for, a defensive front. You go back and look at the Jerome Browns and the Danny Stubbs and the McDougals and the Warren Saps. This is what the Canes are built on. And tonight, they look like the Canes of old. The offense didn't have to do a whole lot. They wasn't extravagant Ocho throwing the ball for 300 yards.

5:46Shannon Sharpe:They didn't have 150-yard rusher. But, hey, they played great behind that running game, and that defense came to play today, and they played lifestyle football. Hey, a game like today, Uncle Joe, games like this, when teams are of equal value, of equal skill, of equal quality, those type of games are one up front, Joe. I'm seeing. It's one down in the trenches. And they set the tone. Not only did the Miami Hurricanes score offensively, hit Fletch out in the flat, right? You talk about studying film with a smoke route, Joe. I haven't seen TV pick off a smoke route. Great understanding in what's coming.

6:28And hold on, honk. He don't go to the man with a man. He go where the ball is going to be in order for the ball to get to the man. It goes right in the goddamn pass lane and take it to the house for six. Once they was up 14 zip and I saw that defensive line and Bain with them boys was making goddamn saying uncomfortable and him not being able to sit back there and make plays and dissect and be surgical with that ball. I knew it was going to be a long night for Ohio State. Ohio State. What was Ohio State? It was favored to win the game. What? By three? I think about a touchdown. Maybe eight. Yeah, I think so.

7:03Wasn't it favored by like eight and a half? Yeah. By the time, Joe, by the time it got to the end of the second quarter, I don't know what the odds were in Vegas, but I know they had to flip and they had to change. They had to. The way it looked, they dominated the whole game, not only the whole game, but up front. Boy, that goddamn D-line.

7:24Shannon Sharpe:They got at them. If you can't run the ball against that front foe, it's a wrap. Yep, right. It's a wrap. Lightfoot, Reuben Bain Jr., Akeem Mesador

7:40Shannon Sharpe:I don't know I told him I said running backs if you stand flat footed and catch the line blessing linebacker he gonna sit you in the quarterback's lap every time every time hey unless unless you weigh 300 something pounds you're going backwards hey hey hey Joe you watching this game what do you think about how you took it to them I mean right away they were not in awe of this ball club I understand you the defending champ and you've won so many games in the regular season, but that ain't got nothing to do with us. We come here, and we're not in awe of you. We are the you. Yeah, we've had some lean years.

8:14Shannon Sharpe:We haven't been what you've been over the last two decades, but this is a different story. Yeah, I'm with y 'all, man. I thought Miami controlled it, you know, up front with their defensive front, but this is what makes college football so exciting because it's just one game, man. I just got to be better than you one game, and I thought Miami came out and controlled it from start to finish, But I do love the Jeremiah Smith kid from Ohio State. Man, I don't know if it's me, but Uncle Ochoa, that boy out there moving. Copenhagen's Spit Free packs American-grown tobacco into pouches. Made for when your elbow's deep in an engine block.

I've been watching him from high school. He went to Chaminade.

12:40Joe, he the real deal, Joe. I'm not sure how the hurricane let him get outside of Miami. I don't know how to get outside of Miami.

12:47Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, he making three and a half, four million dollars a year. Hey, he making four. He making four, huh? That's what I'm saying. That's how they let him get out of there. And plus, he saw the lineage, Ocho. If you go back and think about all the first-round draft pick receivers, Abuka and Jigba, Harrison Jr., David Ballston, Chris Carr. You go back and study the history of Ohio State, Joey Galloway. So you go back and look, and he says, I want to be a part of that. Brian Hartline was the receiver coach. He was a great receiver there. So that kind of explains it. Go ahead, Ocho. Joe, that explains it.

13:22I love the name you just riddled off, right? But hold on now. The Miami Hurricanes had a group that came out with them as well. Not like Ohio State. Hold on. Let me finish now.

13:32Shannon Sharpe:Go ahead. Santana Moss, Andre Johnson, Roscoe Paris. I mean, maybe the name might not be as – You was good with Andre Johnson and Santana Moss. You probably should have went to Michael Irvin. You probably should have went to Reggie Wayne. You probably should have went to downtown Eddie Brown. Devin Hester, Reggie, I mean, it's a lot of them. I'm just, I'm giving you an example. Like the Hurricanes, he could have kept that legacy of Roberts. He was coming out of Miami alive too. I understand Ohio State. I think it's probably more recent, Ocho, because if you look at Marvin Harrison Jr., you look at Olave, you look at Garrett Wilson, you look at Njigba, you look at Abuka.

14:13Shannon Sharpe:So he's probably looking at it from that standpoint, Ocho, and that's not to say that Miami, because as you mentioned, Stanley Shakespeare. They had downtown Eddie Brown. They had Mike Irvin. They had Andre Johnson. They had Reggie Wayne, Santana Moss. They've had some really good receivers. But as far as recently, if you go back and look at the past 10 years, they probably got seven, eight first round picks. Absolutely. Absolutely. And you see what, and you guess what? You get to see them every single Sunday and see what they're doing. You're right. You're right. I think that's the biggest thing and Heartline coached all those guys so when he comes in there he says you saw Marvin Harrison Jr top three pick you saw Ibuka you saw Njigba you see all these guys Garrett Wilson was rookie of the year Chris Olave another thousand yard season I'm telling him I believe you got more talent than all of them you're bigger you're just as fast you're strong you're 6 '3 son you're 215 220 and you can run 144 you have something that look those are a little spit.

15:16Shannon Sharpe:I mean crystal lobby the big guy, but he ain't six three Yeah, 20. This gives a big this is a big kid. I saw dad to carry money when he caught that I think Hey, he's moving to move it. Oh, you can move people You know, that's why the first thing you remind me of when you look at him up you remind me Andre Johnson Maybe not yes, maybe not as big yet because he's not he that he hasn't filled into his body right? Like Andre Johnson joke. He's still getting that teenage body. Yeah And next year, the same reason why they got Chris Henry Jr. Because he sees Jeremiah Smith, and I get to go learn from Jeremiah Smith.

15:51Shannon Sharpe:Each one teach one. We saw this with Alabama when they had Julio Jones. They had Calvin Ridley. They had a coupe. They had Devontae. They had Ruggs. They had Waddle. You see what they did? They had Jamison Williams. They had Mechie. You see what they do? Each one teach one. So, hey, Alabama had that streak. Now, it's Ohio State's turn now, Ocho. But look, it wasn't that Ohio State, to me, never seemed comfortable. Because normally they go out there, their defense, limits team, they gave up the fewest amount of points. They gave up the fewest amount of passing yards. They gave up the fewest amount of everything.

16:31Shannon Sharpe:They were number one in the FBS. And all of a sudden, excuse me, a team is going out there that's not in awe, that's not afraid. They go, hold on, that ain't supposed to happen. Who did that to us? And so now, Ohio State and Miami, Miami don't turn the ball over. Who knows? This thing might have got out of hand sooner. Give Ohio State credit. Hey, man, I love that Caleb Downs. That kid is a solid tackle. He don't miss no tackles. Hey, I don't. He's Johnny on the spot. He's coming with bad intentions, too. He's not the biggest. I mean, what do you think he is, Ocho? 6, 6, 210, 210, 215? Something like that.

17:10But what he makes up, for what he lacks in size, he makes up in other areas. He's rangy as hell. He can play down in the blocks. Hell, he can play free. And one thing about it, in open space, he's making that tackle every time. He's making the tackle, Ocho. Every time.

17:23Shannon Sharpe:Every time. You're right. You're absolutely right. So I don't think, look, Julian Sand was 22 or 35, 287, two interceptions, but I don't think this year he's never been under this kind of duress. you want to find out what a man can do Joe put him to the test I got to put him under fire because I don't know if you can handle it if I don't put you under the gun so guess what that front part they blitzed it once or twice but mainly it was that down four they didn't have to blitz if I'm getting home Joe if I'm getting home with four what I'm bringing extra four and putting my back and sacrificing the back eight correct for what So it puts me in the mind of just like the Super Bowl, right?

18:08Shannon Sharpe:The Eagles, how they got out to Mahomes. Yep. If you got a front row who can get out to that quarterback, man, listen. I guess the defensive line is a premium, huh, in football. Yes. Yes. That's why everybody trying to get the Parsons. Everybody trying to get a Miles Garrett. Everybody trying to get a Max Crosby, an Aiden Hutchinson. Yes, you need those guys. You need an Aredonnell. you need you if you can get that you look at when the Patriots were undefeated it was that front four OC straight tuck here can'ty that's what that's what for so we're not gonna give up we're not gonna give up any big plays yeah we're gonna make a nickel and dime your way around the field but we're gonna punish a damn quarterback yeah oh yeah and that's what you've seen tonight that's what they did yeah yeah the same thing when the Broncos played Carolina when you got Vaughn and D where You have Malik Jackson.

18:59Shannon Sharpe:You had Derek Wolf. We ain't got to bring no pressure. This four right there. You can't block these four. We don't need to sacrifice the back end by bringing an extra guy. When you block these four, then we'll consider it. But until then, no, we just going to sit back here and look to knock the hell out of you. But Miami, that was very impressive. A.D. Cain put people on notice, Ocho. Oh, yeah, absolutely. They put people on notice. This is the thing I'm curious about this this Ole Miss Georgia game. I'm not sure how that's gonna look I'm not sure that's gonna look what Georgia played them earlier Didn't they play them earlier and that Ole Miss had them under control and then Georgia just went haywire I think if the score was like 40 was like 43 38 or 42 35 it was a high-scoring game Mojo, but I think I think George has gotten better.

19:46Shannon Sharpe:Ole Miss has gotten better Yeah, but both both have gotten better is the reason why they are where they are now 43-35 Ocho, that was the final score Yeah, so I'm curious How that game is going to go, which Georgia is going to show up Which Ole Miss is going to show up Which team is going to make the least mistakes Who's going to win the battle of the trenches Up front, that's where it's going to start Whoever wins You know everything in Georgia is predicated on defense You know Kirby, Kirby, check a page out of Coach Saban I'm going to stop your run and I'm going to come Hunt your quarterback I'll tackle the running back on the way To the quarterback, my intention is to get to him But if you had him the ball, I'd tackle his ass.

20:22Shannon Sharpe:But just so you know, I'm coming to get you. But Carson Beck, the thing that got the Canes in trouble is when he turned the ball over. When he takes care of the football, Joe, they're a very talented football team, and they can do some good things. They lost games. You go back and look at the games that they lost, four turnovers against LSU. I think they lost against Virginia. I think that was the only two games they lost. They go on the road. They beat Notre Dame in Notre Dame. They beat A &M in A &M. So clearly, they're a very talented football team. It's just that who can manage the emotions, who can take care of the football.

21:02Shannon Sharpe:And I felt like I was looking like, damn, Miami, when y 'all had the momentum, I thought y 'all should have put like 21 points. Did you give yourself enough separation? Because that game got really, really close, Ocho. It did. That game got really, really close. But when the defense had to bow their backs, they bowed it. They bowed it. They bowed it. But Ohio State goes down. There will not be a repeat champion, something that we haven't had in a very, very long since the Georgia Bulldogs went back-to-back. But you look at what they had. Boy, they had an ass load of first-round draft picks to go.

21:41Shannon Sharpe:They had five guys on the defensive side to go in the first round, and then the next year they had Jalen Carter and all those other guys. But the Miami Hurricanes stunned number two Ohio State Buckeyes by the score of 24-14. They await the winner of Ole Miss Georgia in the Fiesta Bowl. 25:54Shannon Sharpe:Oh, Joe, I know you heard this, you and Joe. No, Trayvon Diggs was released by the Cowboys and later picked up by the Packers. Brian Schottenheimer said the first time Trayvon Diggs approached him about wanting to stay in D.C. was after Dallas win against the commanders on Christmas. Schottenheimer added his protocol is unless there's a family emergency, all players fly to and from the game as a team. And the other players asked early in the week and were told the same thing. Schottenheimer emphasized it was not only the reason why the team chose to waive him, it was multiple factors like performance and other elements.

26:26Shannon Sharpe:said he truly wishes Diggs nothing but the best. Yeah. Hey, hey, hey, Joe, listen, I understand this. It's protocol. There are rules you have to follow. There are standards that you set in place as a team that all players have to follow. But due to the circumstances, right? Unc, stay with me real quick, Unc. I know you probably feel different about this. Due to the circumstances, as a coach, one player asking, Is it okay if I stay behind To see family and do whatever it is Even if it's not a family emergency Knowing that Our season is over We're not going nowhere Joe, we ain't going nowhere Hey coach, listen, I just want to stay behind me Real quick with the family I'm going to be back the following day I'm going to come back the following day Okay I mean, me Obviously, I'm on the outside looking in now I don't see no problem with it Especially when okay, it's not like we were paying for the next season.

27:25Okay We have to we have to prepare for the following week was the last game of the season We ain't going to the playoffs. Oh, Joe. We ain't going nowhere.

27:31Shannon Sharpe:Did that man tell you? So let me ask you a question. Did he fly early in the week to go see his family or did he fly on the team plane? Talk to me the man told you we fly we came as a team. We're leaving as a team Everybody kept talking about what shot he went to Wyoming shot He did not go to Wyoming from DC He flew his ass back to Dallas and then got on a plane and went to Wyoming. Yes, sir. You know what, Chad, excuse me, Ocho and Joe, I like to give context. Terrell Davis led the AFC in Russia in 1996, 1997. He won the Super Bowl MVP in 1997. He was a three-time first-team All-Pro, 2 ,000 yards, won the MVP.

28:12Shannon Sharpe:We were playing the Giants on a Saturday. He had an appearance for Sesame Street. Mike can I stay no you're getting on the plane. We came of the team leaving as a team He flew all the way back to Denver only to get his ass go to bed get up the next morning and catch a plane back Yeah Now I told you I've been telling you since we got on this thing go Joe and I'm not here to beat up Trayvon D But what did I tell you I? Kept tell us that oh Joe you never tolerate anything in a win you wouldn't have lost Yes, sir. I also told you production and tolerance now you if dude He said there was a lot of other reasons.

28:47Shannon Sharpe:You mean to tell me this is the first year that Trayvon Diggs has blown off treatment? He's been late to something? I guarantee you, I bet your doorknob to a bucket of commoner, and the doorknob is diamond, a 50-carat diamond, flawless, deflawless, internally flawless if you want to make it. I guarantee you the season that he had 11 interceptions, and he was a first-team all-pro, I bet you he was late to something. You see what happened? they were tolerating behavior when they were winning that they couldn't stomach when they were losing. Yes, sir. You see how that go, Joe? Now, I also told you, Ocho, he took chance.

29:25Shannon Sharpe:I said, you got to be careful because he's not a speed merchant. If you lose anything, you take those same risks. You're going to set yourself up for failure. Now, when he came back, see, you didn't notice this, Ocho. They played a cover. They promoted McConkie. They ran him up the rail. He tried to play two to one. They threw the ball over his head. Yeah. See, I see everything. But I wasn't going to say nothing. Because I don't want people to think I'm beating up. I'm just trying to provide you context. I'll give you another story. Shannon Sharp, 2002. My grandmother's in the hospital. We play Tampa on a Saturday night.

30:01Shannon Sharpe:I go to Coach Billick. I say, Coach Billick, my grandmother's in the hospital. I wonder if it'll be okay that if I stay overnight and then go. I had already told her, but I just wanted to make sure. I said, Coach Bill, you remember I talked to you earlier this week. I said, my grandmother's in the hospital. We're close by. If it's a problem, hey, I'll get back on the plane because I don't want anything. He said, hey, I'm glad you reminded me. But hey, go take care of your grandmother. I stayed overnight. Sunday, flew to Savannah, stayed there. Come back Tuesday. I was in a meeting on Wednesday.

30:35Shannon Sharpe:Wednesday. He said, unless it's a family emergency joke. Did he say that? Yeah. Yeah.

30:45Shannon Sharpe:A family emergency. Mike Shanahan made TD, a Super Bowl MVP, a league MVP, a three-time first-team All-Pro. He had an appearance in New York. Oh, Joe, he's there. Do you know how long the flight is back to Denver? And then had to get – got him and come right back. Five long ones, yeah. That's COVID now. I'm just trying to explain something to you, Chad. I'm not trying to beat up Trayvon Diggs, but once the man told you, but I saw, I told Joe, you weren't on this summer. I told Ocho, when Michael Parsons was laying on that table, what did I tell you, Ocho? Oh, he was going. That was it. That was it.

31:27That was it. But, you know, Michael Parsons wanted, hey, at that point, Joe, Michael ain't there. At that point, body language let you know, I'm done. When Trayvon Diggs, obviously, another point on, You think about the situation where he chose not to get treatment on his knee in the offseason, and he chose to do it away where he was rehabbing that and decided not to do it in Dallas at the facility so they can keep track and see how far you come along. That might be part of where it all starts. It is. As far as this year is concerned. I'm not talking about that. James Slater. Go ahead, Ocho. Go ahead.

32:02Finish your point. No, but I'm just saying, Joe, I know. Now, I'm thinking about what I get with the healthy trade ball digs. I understand what you do. Joe A. Unk, I say it all the time, and I talk about the defensive backs in the NFL when it comes to them playing. Now, I like a healthy Trayvon Digg because 95 % of the defensive backs in the NFL, they play football not to get beat. And you got 5%, Unk and Joe, you got 5 % that's out there to make a play. And Trayvon Digg's in that 5%. I don't care what nobody say. He's in that 5%. I'm going to try to make a play. sometimes when he tries to make that play he gambles

32:41Shannon Sharpe:but you got to play within the scheme Ocho Ocho Ocho I'm going to be late I need you to cover for me I can't just be late and don't tell you to cover for me so he can't play a coverage without telling the safety get over the top of this because I'm going to jump it Brian Schottenheimer is trying to change the culture hopefully Jerry's allowed him to do it because far too many of times since Jimmy was gone, players could do something, circumvent the head coach, Joe, and go straight to Jerry. Hopefully, Jerry now has a wall up that says, no, y 'all deal with shoddy. Because you got to change the culture.

33:19Shannon Sharpe:Now, I don't know if this is true, but there was a guy talking about, and I guess he's a day-to-day guy, I guess he's a beat writer or something. And he was saying that when they were doing team stretching, he said everybody would be in their groups and they'd be stretching, so forth and so on. He He said, but Parsons and Diggs were off to the side doing their own thing. He said it rubbed him the wrong way. Now, I don't know that's true. Maybe he got an ax to grind with Micah. Maybe he got an ax to grind with Trayvon. I don't know. But as Shottie said, one of the reasons that we cut him was because we told him that he was not allowed to stay, and then there were a host of other reasons.

33:56Shannon Sharpe:So production intolerance. Ocho, let me ask you a question. Ocho, let me ask you a question. Ocho, to me. Had he stayed, Joe, had he stayed, but he had six picks, four pass breakups, a four fumble, are they cutting him? No, sir. No, absolutely not. Okay. Hey, I got another question for you, Tuna. Let me tell you something, Joe. I know that's your team, huh? Yes, sir. You love your Dallas Cowboys. I understand that. But think about all the people, Unc, and Chad, Think about all the people that have recently, that have left the Dallas Cowboys. Tell me how they've done. There you go. Once they've departed.

34:34Joe, stay with me. Joe, I ain't trying to talk. I'm not talking about the Cowboys in general. I'm talking about the players that have been able to find love and go on to greener pastures.

34:45Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, yeah, yeah. Everyone that seemed to produce, and maybe for Trayvon Diggs, maybe it's great that he's going to a change of scenery. He's not only going to a team, he's going to a team and have the chance to compete in the postseason for a change. He says he's healthy. Come on now. The Cowboys for the longest time said that he wasn't. Jerry said that he wasn't healthy. Shoddy says that he wasn't healthy. I don't, Ocho, you and I are not there. We don't see the man. He said he's healthy. I've got to take his word for it. Even though they say he's not, they are not in his body. Just like when people tell me, hey, you good.

35:21Shannon Sharpe:Bro, you don't know how bad this pain is. Don't tell me I'm good. Right, right. Hell, I know my pain level is the pain in which I can handle. Again, Chad, I don't mean to be the dead horse. It's called production and tolerance. And when production is up here, tolerance is up here. Tolerance will never outweigh production. I don't give a damn who you are. You see it all the time. Well, how was he able to get it? because he makes the company money. He produces sacks, interception, yards, touchdown. That's how. Hey, take your time now. Come on. As my coach in college told us, he said, I'm going to treat y 'all all fair.

36:03Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. But I ain't treating you the same. Right. Hey, Unc, a little bit though. There's a way you got to do things, right? Yes. You have to learn. As a player, you have to learn to play the game within the game. Yes. I kind of see your side clear as day. I see your side clear as day. But I'm just understanding as the coach, I think because of all the issues that he's had with Trayvon in general with the team that we don't know about, the rest of the stuff, I don't know why he didn't grant him that reason to stay back. I think it would have been different. It was someone else that may have asked.

36:47You know what? I just want to see my family a little bit it's okay if I stay back and do X, Y, and Z but the fact that they asked him to do things in the past and he chose not to be there hell no we ain't finna let you stay you get on this flight and if you need to go wherever you need to go you catch it and go all the way back where we flying from and then we'll see you Wednesday morning

37:13Shannon Sharpe:I agree with y 'all saying I think it was time for Trayvon to get a change of senior. I'm with you on that, Ocho, but the grass ain't always green over there, bro. Oh, it's green. It's green in Green Bay. It's green. Hey, what you always say, every year you got to update your resume now. You got to update your resume. You know, we don't know what next year's going to. Ocho know he ain't the same player. Yeah, but hey, listen, sometimes when you're not the same player, you go in the right situation, the right environment, you're able to flourish. So I'm supposed to give you the same money even though you're not the same player?

37:47Shannon Sharpe:I mean, we ain't going that far yet. But here's the thing, Ocho. Plus, he didn't have any more guaranteed money. So I got no more obligation. I ain't got to pay you no more because guess what? Even now, the Green Bay picked him up. They got to pay that$420 ,000,$230 ,000 for that last game check. I ain't got nothing to do with that. You know what? They're not really worried about that. I know they understand the piece that they are getting, and they're going to put the piece that they are getting based on what they've seen and what they're knowing he can do and put him in position to be able to do the things that he's good at.

38:21And I like that for young Bull. I mean, I wish it would have worked out because who doesn't want to play for Dallas, Joe? Who don't want to have that goddamn star on the helmet? But I think the situation and the relationship with the Cowboys and Trayvon Diggs is going sour.

38:38Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, it was headed that way. Jane Slater, my point was, Joe and Ocho, Jane Slater, who's the insider who covers the Cowboys, and she's like Mary Kay Cabot. When Mary Kay Cabot speaks about the Cleveland Browns, you listen to her. When Jane Slater speaks about the Cowboys, you listen to her. And she was like, he reached out to her. But she said she can't recall where Jerry has ever fined a player for not showing up.

39:10Shannon Sharpe:I think she's been covering them for at least a decade. and she said she can't remember. So that should have been an indication to Trayvon right there. That was a warning, Ocho. Yeah. I don't really, if I'm going to a car, if I'm crossing the railroad tracks, I don't really have to see the train if I see them arms go down and them red lights flash. I don't even got to see it. I just know the train coming. Oh, yes, come on. All the time that he's probably been fined, all the times he's been done, Jerry probably forgave that. because he had 11 picks. He's the first team all pro. He's going to the Pro Bowl.

39:48Shannon Sharpe:So once them arms come down, I'm coming to a railroad track. Man, where the train at? Man, I can beat it. Wrong. Boom. That should have been an indication. I believe Brian Schottenheimer is trying to change the culture there. Too many times, guys have been doing whatever they want to do. Now we're a team. That's one thing Mike preached. nah we're not going to come out here we're not no all tournament team you're going to be dressed like you dress on Sunday now if you don't wear pads on Sunday come out to practice with no pads but if you wear pads on Sunday don't you bring your ass out here with no pads so whoever don't have on pads and you wear pads on Sunday take your ass back inside I ain't moved because I ain't wear no pads all I had was shoulder pads and a helmet that's how you have to do it if you want to change the culture sometimes Joe and you know this in basketball you got to get some of your better players because they're bad apples you got to get them out of there because sometimes some of your best players are most influential and they'll influence other guys and I don't want that I feel you but you already know what you need when it comes to winning games right yeah You know what you're going to need.

41:11You're going to need some dogs.

41:14Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, well, they better get some D linemen. That's what they need. They need somebody that can hunt the quarterback. That too. I don't care. I don't care anything about yourself. I don't care who they are. You better get somebody to go hunt that quarterback because without that pressure, if you let him sit back there and just pat this ball like it's 7-on-7, You saw the game on Sunday night. You saw what they did. You saw the Rams and Seahawks go up and down the field. You've got to have somebody to put pressure on that quarterback, Ocho. I don't care how good your cornerbacks are. They can't hold up all day.

41:56Shannon Sharpe:They cannot. And for the production that Trayvon was giving them, they finally said, you're not worth the headache. Listen, they said with one game left in the season and they're not going to the postseason i mean that ocho that i told you they were moving on after the season he just spared the process up he expedited and you know what i i think i think he doesn't see no problem with that because if he saw a problem with that if he was worried about the the consequences of him staying back he wouldn't have done it he wouldn't have done it because they already told him no so he sped it up also we have to see man you know what man we ain't going no goddamn well they they've been playing with me.

42:37I'm telling them healthy. They not let me play. I'm a healthy guy. I'm a healthy goddamn scratch. I play today. I'm asking if I can stay back. They said no. You know what, man?

42:46Shannon Sharpe:After you've seen people. Let me ask you a question, Ocho. You got there three years. You've been there the last three years. You got three touchdowns. Cincinnati is not going to let you do what they normally do if you had 13 touchdowns in three years. Listen, I'm with you when you're writing. I'm picking up with you. I'm with you when you're writing. I'm picking up with you. Cincinnati let you act a fool. You had 1 ,300. You had 1 ,400. You had 1 ,600. You had 90 catches. You had 85 catches. You got 55 catches. Uh-uh. Your name's Chad Johnson, and you need to act accordingly. I'm just telling you how it is.

43:23Shannon Sharpe:I'm just telling you. That's how it works in the real world. You ask, well, man, such and such late, such and such. He might be 20 minutes late, 30 minutes late. but when he's here he's very productive he gets the job done you here early and be bull jibbing you at the water cooler gossiping about he late he come in late sit his ass down at his desk a cubicle and go to work guys life ain't fair you gotta stop judging and think everybody what i do it doesn't work like that it never has and it never will once you understand that the job life is so it's so easy. Yeah, it is. Hey, Uncle and Joe, when it comes to basketball, when it comes to football, when it comes to the corporate world, when it comes to any and everything dealing with life in general, it's a game within a game.

44:24And the better you learn the game, the better off you are. The better off you are. The higher you are at the top of whatever it is you're doing, the more you get to play the game, you're away. Yes. But if you're not up there, if you're not the big dog, if you're not the one calling the shots, you have to learn to play the game.

44:48Shannon Sharpe:And I think the thing is, Ocho, you mentioned that he's now in Green Bay. His best friend, Micah Parsons, is in Green Bay, although we know Micah towards knee ligament, and he's going to be out. But he's there with somebody familiar. we talked about we talked to the young gentleman last night Higgins Iowa State receiver goes in the second round and then he goes in the third round Jalen Noel he goes in the third round familiarity someone there that he knows he's not going to be there by himself but I just want him to get back to being who and what he is he has to understand Ocho when you're not a speed the thing is when you're not a speed merchant Ocho and you have a knee injury see like Tyreek like you said okay Tyreek is not going to be 425 he gonna play 438 444 flat that's still faster than 85 90 % of the NFL absolutely but when you 455 446 and you have an injury nah you gotta play you gotta play defense you gotta play straight up and also not only do you have to play straight up it's all about having a feel for the game and understanding the game you play DB for a very long time you being 4 '5 and having somebody 4 '3 across from you you understand It's all about leverage.

45:59It's all about angles. Using your hand to be able to reset yourself, reposition the line of scrimmage. It's so many different things. And I love, you know how I feel when it comes to talk about DBs.

46:09Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. I love that, Joe. I love talking from a DB perspective because I play receiver. So I understand what you got to do as a DB to be able to always be able to flirt or plug into the ball. So I think even if he's not the same Trayvon Diggs of old, there are things that you can do to manipulate your game to make sure you stay on top of your shit. Yeah. I think he'll still, he'll still, he'll still, the hardest thing to do is go ahead Joe. I think he'll still be effective. Uncle Ocho. I think he'll, he'll take some time to really get acclimated in green Bay and really show that he can, he can get back to being a top corner.

46:47Shannon Sharpe:So I'm sure he's going to take the challenge on this for sure.

46:55Shannon Sharpe:The hardest thing to do is to convince ourselves we're not what we used to be. It's a real fine line between confidence and delusion. Be careful. I'm going to say it again, Ocho. There's a real fine line between confidence and delusion. Yes, sir. How do we tell ourselves? How do we convince ourselves? Because this is what made us great. the confidence Joe that's what made Joe Johnson who he is that's who made Ocho who he was the confidence

47:34Shannon Sharpe:but as we start to age as we suffer injuries and we're not the player that we once was we once excuse me we once were how do we handle that that's tough

47:52yeah

47:52Shannon Sharpe:Damn.

47:59Shannon Sharpe:Sammy Johnson had a quote. He says, almost every man will waste a part of his life, Ocho, trying to possess characteristics he don't have to gain applause for which he cannot keep. Come on now. Come on. Hold on. Hold on. Hold on. Do me a favor. Rewind that. For the people that didn't hear it, so it can marinate a little bit. Y 'all listen to that real quick, man. We all. Every man will try to possess characteristics he don't have. Basically, in the hopes of coming to something he's not, to gain fame and applause for which he cannot keep. Come on, man. That's why I love just being myself, Joe. I ain't never change, Joe.

48:47Joe, them folk tried to get me to change so bad in the league, Joe. i i couldn't do it i didn't know anything else outside of just being myself joe i ain't had no choice but to be good at what i do because i'm not conforming to what y 'all think i should where the was y 'all when i was in elementary this is how i acted when i was in high school and played and i scored this is how i acted where was y 'all when i was watching the hurricanes in the 90s and randall hill lamar thomas and all them boys and michael ervin scoring they acting a fool when I'm looking at the TV telling my grandma I want to be like them.

49:22What's y 'all? Oh, now I made it. Now you're telling me I'm supposed to change. Man, I'm going to be Eric with Liberty City and Dade County. First time I get a chance. I don't care about the money you're paying me, Joe.

49:35Shannon Sharpe:You just had a good trip. Why you think I never change? I'm not here playing for the money. I'm going to remain authentically myself. Everything that made me me. And I'm going to keep doing it. It don't matter how much money you take from me. Joe, I play the game of football free. Because the one thing they use for us, to be able to keep us under control and to keep us online, Joe, they take what they think we value most, Joe. Yep. He's going to take his money. I value that. Hey, you know what I love about our tight end, the all pro? You know what I love about him? He play this game for free. I'll sit up and say, yeah, but everybody else need to play for free too.

50:17Shannon Sharpe:I ain't going to be the only mofo player for free. just so we clear Joe Joe that you he play for free you right but I need everybody else to play for free too I ain't the only one gonna be playing for free and the thing is Ocho Mike didn't really have a problem with celebrating and all that he said as long as you don't cost your team a penalty as long as you don't cost your team a penalty so somebody did something dirty to me I'm gonna get your ass back I ain't gonna cost you no penalty but I'm gonna get you back I'm gonna get you back hey Joe one thing about it Joe I hate to say it in this way, in these words, right?

50:52But that's the only way to keep them niggas in line. Excuse my language. Excuse my language. You know, you take the money. That's the only way.

51:01Shannon Sharpe:I got to take what you value. I got to take what you value. But in the mall, what they do, Ocho? They hit your family. Yeah. Because you value that. Your mom, your wife, your kids, your mom, your grandpa. What do you value? See, in the NFL, they know you value. You work hard to get in the position. Ocho became an all-pro. He became a pro-ball player so he can make money. He value money. That's why he worked his ass off. He wanted it. He wanted to be able to be in position to take care of his family. Well, let me take a little bit of this off it. Let me lack this load a little bit. Yeah, it ain't work, Joe.

51:36It ain't work. It ain't work, Ocho. It ain't work. Hey, matter of fact, tell Joe about that time I tried to bring.

51:48I was, I was, yeah.

51:51Shannon Sharpe:That was before then, Ocho. You know that was before. That was before now, when everybody think the game was sold. Cause they really think the game sold now. So if you were to do that now, man, they might take, they might suspend you for two games. What'd you do, Ocho? He had a call. They got a call and he tried to get official dollar. All right. like to change his mind on the call yeah it was it was a catch you know and uh i forgot who is it billick who was the ravens coach at the time brian billick brian billick threw a red challenge bag i felt i caught the ball so i'm thinking to myself i'm sitting there you know what i'm gonna just play around real quick i had a dollar in my sock the dollar in my sock was for a celebration so i used the dollar as just a jokingly trying to bribe the ref when he came up outside the replay booth and i tried to hand it to him like go ahead and do this call yeah we call it but joe they got joe the nfl family about 30 000 the next morning oh yeah they ain't playing it's moments like that joe i ain't worried about that 30 000 i'm not even tripping i'm not here having fun and entertaining and on top of that i'm playing to the top i'm playing i Wouldn't just know anybody Joe.

53:08I'm acting a fool, but I'm great at what I do as far as producing this concern So it I mean the Bengals ain't care because they understood week in and week out whether it was playing home All the way, there's one person we don't have to worry about He might act a fool and have some fun, but he gonna show up every After a game.

53:28Shannon Sharpe:Hey, okay, oh, Joe. I ain't look I wouldn't give them nothing bad. You hear me?

53:36Shannon Sharpe:They got me with uniform. How much was it? They got me with uniform, Joe. Same. Joe. Socks. Because you know, you can't show no skin. So, Joe, the guy tackled me. I'm supposed to pull my socks up. Bro, I ain't even thinking about that, man. I'm thinking about the next play. I'm thinking about beating old boy again or beating somebody else. And they fined you out for that? How much did you fined you? Yeah. Five lousers. Yeah, the first offense was$5 ,000, and that was another place where all my money went. I wore a streamer towel, Joe. You know the little Gatorade towels y 'all had, the long Gatorade towels be on the bench?

54:16I cut me a streamer towel and had a streamer towel hanging on the side of my hip. Mind you, they give you towels a well. Joe, I want mine long and pretty. So when I run, it's blowing in the wind. So if you look at some pictures of me, sometimes I have an orange chin strap. Depending on what color jersey we wear, sometimes they have a black chin strap. Joe, I ain't, man. Sometimes my cleats was gold. Joe, our colors were orange or black. What I'm doing with gold?

54:42Shannon Sharpe:You're just doing what you want to do right there. What I'm doing, man, listen. You look good, you play good. And if you play good. Yeah, Joe wasn't lying, Ocho. In Joe's whole career, he was only fining$6 ,000. Hey, man, I didn't give them folks nothing back. Man, hey, Ocho, where I'm from? Two technical files and an ejection. I got ejected, I think it was like one time. But I'll... For real? You a custom ref out? Yeah, it must have been something. No, I don't complain to the ref when I play, man. I play through all that. So if I go to the ref, it's because it's something really happening, man, and you missed it, bro.

55:17Shannon Sharpe:He deserved it, huh, Joe? He deserved it. But I ain't just out there just hollering at the ref for no reason. Nah. Mm-hmm. Remember, Ocho, you take this with you. Almost every man will waste a part of his life trying to possess qualities he does not have in an attempt to gain applause for which he cannot keep. Come on now. Come on now. Oh, let me ask you this. Do you think he can actually help the Packers defense? The Packers have the seventh best pass defense in 2025. Was this a favor to Micah or do you believe Trayvon? Because they're kind of banged up in the secondary. Yeah. But do you believe he can actually help them?

55:54Yeah, I believe so. I believe so. the fact that they're seventh in pass defense, they're going to put him in positions to be able to do what he does well, whether we believe he's the same or not, and they're going to be all right. Obviously, that front four that they do have that can get home when they do play, once they get into the postseason, I think Trayvon's going to be spectacular in the way they use him, and that's what matters most. It's not like, damn, our front four is not good. We can't get to the quarterback, so now we need our back end to carry us and do what they do. Man, them people may...

1:00:31Shannon Sharpe:Joe, this is right up your alley. Anthony Edwards was clearly frustrated by the team's performance tonight. They lost 126-102 to the Atlanta Hawks. After head coach Chris Finch pulled Wolf's starter and left the bench, went to the locker room with a little under eight minutes left in the game. The Hawks led at the time 109-80. Finch called him out after the game, said, Obviously, frustrated with the performance, and rightfully so, but he needs to stay on the floor and root for his team. Today's game continued a frustrating stretch for the Wolves, who have lost three of their four games, despite Ant-Man averaging 31.3.

1:01:10Shannon Sharpe:During that stretch, Minnesota sitting 21-13 this year in sixth place in the West. According to ESPN, Ant-Man, an Atlanta native who played college ball at Georgia, had a number of old friends and family at tonight's game, including his grandfather. Hey. I get all that. Bro, you down 30? Joe, you ain't coming back with eight minutes to go down. You ain't coming back, bro. You know, you got to control your emotions, bro. No, I'm saying that's why Finch took him out. Yeah, yeah. I get what you're going. But my thing is, here's what Ant-Man thinking. He thinking, man, I'm back home at the crib. I'm finna come out and show out because he was balling.

1:01:50Shannon Sharpe:He was balling. He the only one was balling. The rest of them dudes act like they didn't even know they had a game. And I think, you know, he thinking to himself, man, I got all my people out here. Y 'all come out. We put on this lackluster performance in front of my folks out here. Yeah, he got a little beside himself. He was pissed off. I could tell. But I thought his play was pretty good. He was balling. He had 30, I think, like in the third quarter. Like they couldn't stop him. But nobody else was giving him anything on his team. Plus, the Hawks were, man, they was hitting on all cylinders.

1:02:24Shannon Sharpe:They wasn't missing. They moving their basketball. Everybody touching it. didn't they have like 27 three joe here's here's the thing because i've been hearing a lot of the rumblings about trey young when he's came back you know how the hawks haven't been playing great uh they you can't game plan for the guys who's out there now when trey is not out there you can't it's hard to game plan for those guys you know what i mean like when trey is out there he's such a focal point of the offense that you know you put so much attention on him that uh you know i think it kind of creates a little havoc or whatnot throughout the team, but I think when Trey doesn't play, everybody just kind of plays freely.

1:03:03Shannon Sharpe:Nobody's really getting double-teamed, triple-teamed. Jalen Johnson has been spectacular throughout this. Yeah, where the hell did he come from, Joe? He got hurt last year. He would have been an all-star last year, but he got hurt. This year, they got him in places on the court to where he's so effective, but he's the prototypical forward in today's game of basketball. I mean, he can do everything. He can shoot the three. He rebound, block shots, play defense. He can playmate. He has no weakness. And you can tell, look, if you look at the month of, I think, December, he averaged a triple-double in this whole month of December.

1:03:40Shannon Sharpe:He's been balling. Yes. He's been balling. He had 34-9 on 15-22, 3-6 from the three-point line, 1-1 from the free-throw line, 10 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals, and a block. Yeah, he's balling, man. But Ant-Man, you said, Joe, Ant-Man had 30. He 10 of 18, 3 of 8 from 3, 7 of 8 from the free throw line. He played 33 minutes. Man, listen. Can you imagine, Unc, if you was playing and y 'all came out here and you playing against the Falcons, Unc, you got, you know, you out here doing your thing, but y 'all getting blue out and you got your whole family and friends out. Like, man, I totally. So I cut up on the Falcons.

1:04:20Shannon Sharpe:You cut up on the Falcons? Yeah, we went out there at 97. no the devil went down to jorge he's looking for a soda steal i did i did a number on you i hit him up i hit him up on trove like five for a buckle a buckle three of the tub 64 yards second player of the game third player of the game come home and show up and show out oh yeah i had 20 tickets i had to spit that but they got to see me show out like it didn't hit you know oh yeah for sure it just it just wasn't a game man the hawks was hitting on all cylinders and you know i i know he probably was like man we got to come right here ain't gonna win and it just didn't happen that way they actually got embarrassed i mean the 24 but the game really wasn't that close it wasn't it wasn't that close hey speaking of basketball you know i'm at i'm down here in the bahamas right yeah i'm at the cigar bar at bahamar right i'm sitting i'm sitting there with the missus sitting there smoking a cigar and i'm looking down on my phone and i see somebody sitting in front of me i can see him out of the periphery he said what's up ocho and you know i don't really I say, hey, how you doing?

1:05:21Happy New Year, sir. He say, oh, Joe, this is John. I look up, it got damn John stars, man. I stood up, man. I stood up so hyped. What's up, boy? Bring it in here, man.

1:05:34Shannon Sharpe:Boy, you in Cambodia, y 'all. You in Cambodia getting frequent flyers, aren't you? Yeah, yeah, yeah. You know, right.

1:05:43Yeah, I'm going to bring it in right. I'm going to bring it in upside down. But listen to me. Joe, He's going on the flight from Miami to the Bahamas is 18 minutes. Yes. Yeah Yeah, I could I just I got a swam here But you know, I normally I normally fly spirit, but I just know when I get on the JetBlue flight, right?

1:06:02Shannon Sharpe:Yeah JetBlue got some nice lights Yeah,$72 so I you know I jumped on it and uh, you know, we going to the parade tonight You see what Michelle say? You can see what that say, Unk? Valley Boy. Valley Boy. You see what that say right there, Joe? Yeah, yeah. See what that say? Valley Boy. Yeah, yeah. The greatest. The incomparable. The only one. The Valley Boy. The Junkanoe tonight. It don't start until 2 in the morning. So I'm excited. I'm happy. I'm sure I have some Junkanoe fans here in the chat. You know, Valley, we bringing it home today. They have Boxing Day Parade. We came in second. And so we got the New Year's Day Parade, which you can brag about for the next 11 months.

1:06:45Shannon Sharpe:Everybody got a hat on so I figured I'd put your hat on too. What's your hat say, huh? Nightcap. Let me tell you something. When we get off this show tonight, it's going down. Boy, that's what it's going to be, nightcap. You hear me? Matter of fact, put it back. I'm going to cap my night. They're not the one? Okay. I'm glad you said it, don't you? I'm glad you said that. Glad you said that. This is what you need to understand. See, globally, not just here in the States, globally, I'm known for not spending no money. Okay, okay. I'm known for not being a TR-ICK, you know? Okay. Like, you, you know, I'm a 50-50 type dude.

1:08:27Shannon Sharpe:Okay, you 50-50, 50-50, okay, I'm with you. Hey, Joe, I ain't got no problem pulling what really likes me for me. Right, right. You know, so there's somebody out there for you, huh? There for me? Okay. Yeah, and you're gonna find that 2026 in January. Got it. It ain't got nothing to do with no money. Build on the day goes you stack you stack one on top of the home Well, I was hoping to build I was hoping to build on something into the new year, but you know, okay I'll wait till I get into the new year.

We're it ain't even about no money Hey, nah, nah, hey, hey, hey, hey. Sometimes, sometimes, Joe, even Ong need direction. And we go. You hear me? Sometimes a woman can be your GPS. Hey, you ain't got to play Cupid with her, man. Just let it happen organically. Let it happen organically for him. I'm just saying, you know, I had me some seeds. I got me some seeds. I let them dry out. I plant them in fertilizer. I'm going to see whatever grow.

1:09:53Shannon Sharpe:I'm going to see what's going to grow. I don't know what's going to grow on you. I played a lot of thieves, though. Right. Is that man? Mm-hmm. Hello? Well, they out there busting them guns already.

1:10:07Yeah.

1:10:10Shannon Sharpe:But I get the frustration, but I agree with Chris Finch. Look, we understand that you frustrated, but your team, they cheer for you when things are going well. Yeah. They want to see you on the sidelines cheering for them. Yeah, I agree. I get your frustration. I agree. You know what? And I'm sure it needed to be addressed, but I can also understand how Ant-Man feel too, man. What are you doing? I can also understand. What happened, man? I don't know what Ochoa doing. Yeah, yeah. Y 'all can see me? Yeah, man, we can see you, bruh. Yeah, we can see you. You saw I cut out for a minute, huh? No, you didn't.
