In short

Nightcap Hour 1 breaks down Game 5 of the Pistons vs Cavaliers series, focusing on Detroit blowing a 9-0 lead late, Cleveland’s resilience in overtime, and the key reasons for the result. They also discuss the Lakers’ “power move” on LeBron (March 30) and broader NBA offense/defense themes.

Guests (hosts/participants)

ISO Joe Johnson (former NFL player; co-host), Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson (former NFL WR; co-host), Monterey (former NFL player; six-time Pro Bowler, three-time All-Pro; co-host), and Big Play Shea “Shedded Sharp” (co-host). They speak as a sports panel rather than bringing in external NBA guests.

Key claims

  • Detroit’s turnovers (especially by Cade) and lack of offensive help cost them.
  • Jalen Duren’s offensive impact was limited (five rebounds, nine points; plus-minus -16).
  • Cleveland won because they made big shots, forced pressure, and got efficient scoring from Strus (6-for-8 threes, eight shots total).
  • Refs/fouls late were debated; Cleveland’s late-game execution mattered more than calls.

Notable examples

  • Isaiah Thomas inbounds steal moment used as a cautionary comparison to Detroit’s late-game mistakes.
  • Harden missing a free throw, then Cleveland securing the rebound/possession as a turning-point example.

So, thank you also, Hashtag Awards, for the nominees, for the nominations, Best Brand Partnership for Nightcap Outside and Rope, Best Podcast, Best Athletes Podcast, Best Use of Live Video. Joe, I cannot believe it. The Pistons blew a 9-0 lead down the stretch. Oh, man.

8:45Shannon Sharpe:And they beat them in overtime. They led by nine with under two minutes. What about two minutes to go in the ballgame? And this is what Charles Barkley said about Jalen Dury pregame. His whole game is offensive rebounds, lob dunks from Cade. He should never have just two rebounds, ever. That's two more than a dead person. Well, tonight he finished with five rebounds, only had nine points with a plus minus of 16. Minus 16, yeah, plus minus of minus, minus 16. He was on the minus side. He ain't nothing plus. I don't even know why I mentioned plus. It was all subtraction. I guess I do know a little something because I've been saying this all alone, but he's going to want 200 plus million dollars.

9:25Shannon Sharpe:And the man has been gave you a game. We had 10 or two rebounds, gave you another game where he had five Joe. I'm gonna let you have it. But K got to stop turning the ball over. He turned, he turned it over three big times in the third quarter. And that last one where screws picked his pockets. You can't have that. He's too good of a player. He played too well tonight to have that and to let that be what we kind of remember this for. It's kind of like the Isaiah Thomas. You remember Isaiah Thomas when he threw the ball, tried to sneak the ball inbounds, and Henderson ended up stealing the ball and laying it up?

9:58Shannon Sharpe:You can't have this, K. Joe, how was Cleveland able to be so resilient down the stretch and win this ball game in overtime?

10:10Chad Johnson:Man, it's the same thing that we've talked about with Detroit, man. You look at it. If K don't get no help from nobody else, yep, Jenkins gave him a solid, you know, 19. Tobias, this is probably his worst game of the series. You know what I mean? It's like, Ocho, he got so much he carrying on his damn back. Yeah, he going. Now, he can't have no six turnovers. I'm with you. But some of them mistakes he going to make, bro, just by fatigue. I mean, his usage, he played 48 minutes. I know they went into overtime, but, bro, he's all they got offensively. I mean, I thought Paul Reed came in and gave him a lift.

10:46Chad Johnson:Hell, he made it to where it was hard for him to put during back in the game. Yeah. But when you look at Thompson, Ocho, as great as he is defensively and three blocks, four steals, five assists, seven rebounds, he has so many opportunities where he can still put some points on the board. Meaning, like, he gets offensive rebounds. He looking to kick out. Like, he ain't even looking at the goal just to even be aggressive sometimes. You know what I mean? you write that in the paint. I just feel like they rely on K so much. And if he's not heroic, hell, it's hard for him to win.

11:18Shannon Sharpe:Joe, you said something very interesting is that if you look at those three turnovers, what was he trying to do? Play make for somebody else. He could have easily just gone to the basket, but instead of going up, he's trying to dump it off and the guy moves, the ball goes out of bounds, or somebody ends up having the basketball. Four turnovers, I think he had four of his six turnovers after the half. That one in overtime was a killer.

11:41Chad Johnson:Yeah. Because he got picked clean. Yeah.

11:44Shannon Sharpe:He got picked clean. At least if you turn the ball over, Joe, if you turn the ball over and you give me an opportunity to set my defense, yeah, I'm disappointed because we didn't even get a shot up at the rim. But if you turn the ball over and we don't even get a chance to set our defense, we cook.

11:58Chad Johnson:Yeah. Yeah, we cook. Nothing we can do. Go ahead, don't you? I have to say you also have to think about it too. Like Joe said, I think, for one, you need Tobias Harris. He played great all series, Joe. Hell, he's been playing great the entirety of the playoffs. But I think tonight is a night where Tobias Harris needs to show up and take some of that pressure off of Cade. Now, I know he played a lot of minutes, but he needs to be one of those that can, when they needed a bucket, he needs to step up to the party. I'm not sure what's wrong with Brother Thompson. As great as he is defensively, I see he play eight.

12:30Chad Johnson:He can't shoot.

12:31Shannon Sharpe:He's offensively challenged.

12:32Chad Johnson:that's what's wrong with him hey hey um we can't use that excuse especially once you get that next that next level no it's not an excuse you don't want to be you don't want to be one-dimensional you can't be one-dimensional well he can't change that right he can't change that in the series he got to work yeah yeah i understand i'm not sure what was wrong brother jaylen duran either uh joe you know for somebody to me what's wrong with him at some time to give you 20. sometime to get 20. sometime to give you nothing winning game night in the playoffs when last time i don't understand what's wrong.

13:02Chad Johnson:I think his best game in this postseason is 15-15, bro. That's the biggest difference. I mean, hell, he ain't no guy who you gonna just come down and throw the ball to. A lot of his points came from pick and roll with K or energy and effort buckets, but he ain't getting none of them. Hell, you can't only with five rebounds or two rebounds in the game, bro. Like, I don't really know, man. I think Detroit got some so sure shouldn't do but we still got to give cleveland credit okay yeah for sure

13:32Shannon Sharpe:james hard needed this game yeah yeah he did he did he did give strews credit coming off the

13:41Chad Johnson:baby with you yeah he was huge difference baker he was the difference he was he absolutely was joe yeah strews is it strews or strouse a young boy was efficient tonight joe you know man fishing as hell hey hey he's one of those others who we talk about bro you can't let you gotta you gotta alleviate the others and make the stars be stars you know what i mean but if you let a guy like struz get out on you ocho hell that's a game he potentially won for him tonight just by his efficiency alone hell he only took eight shots all of them were threes he was six for eight from three i mean what what what better what better uh complimentary piece you want next to you know Mitchell and Harden in those situations where a guy's making shots, bro.

14:25Chad Johnson:I mean, he did his job tonight. He did his job, because I don't know why D-Wade be out there. He'd just be running sprints. Getting great cardio. I mean, 23. I mean, he had zero. Hey, Wade is your five, right? He the four, small four. No Wade is the three. Allen and Mobley is the four and five. Yeah, hey, listen. He be guarding Kane. He the three with no points? Yeah. Yeah, man.

14:53Shannon Sharpe:Hey, he be guarding Cade. I'm like, why the hell they got him guarding Cade? Because they don't really have anybody else. They don't have – I mean, you think about it. And so when he comes out, that means Struis comes in. And you see Struis basically guarding Cade. Because you can't put Allen on him. You can't put Mobley on him. And Donovan Mitchell and James Harden can't guard him. So he's your next option. He's the only – he's Struis and what you call him. So maybe you might be able to think about throwing a Meryl on him, but maybe Tyson, but you feel more comfortable with Wade and Strews doing it.

15:25Shannon Sharpe:And I thought Strews challenged as much as he could. Cade had it going tonight. He played well enough to win, but you can't turn the ball over like that. You can't.

15:34Chad Johnson:You can't turn the ball. You can't turn the ball over, Ojo. But I'm going to keep it real. Man, Cleveland ain't got not one person who can stick Cade, bro. He get whatever he wants, Joe. I'm talking about every time, too. every time. Hey, look, he may even need to be a little bit more selfish if you ask me. You know what I mean? Because I know he tried to get shots for these other guys and get them involved, but it's like, damn, some of the passes he's making. It's like some of the passes he's making, he giving you great opportunity, but it be a missed layup or a missed. I'm like, hold on, bro.

16:07Chad Johnson:I'd rather you shoot that one.

16:09Shannon Sharpe:I totally agree. I just think the thing is, we can say two things can be true. Detroit actually gagged, but we've seen it before Ocho team when the opportunity was there. They just didn't take advantage of it. Give Cleveland credit because in the process of gagging, somebody had to put you under duress. Right. And then somebody had to follow through. And you see Cleveland, they made every big shot. And I was just getting ready to tweet, and I got distracted. I said, James Harden is going to miss one of these free throws. I said he's going to miss one of these free throws. And I'd be damned if he ain't miss one and they don't get the rebound.

16:51You see, the real life, the ball's not yours until it's in your hands.

16:56Shannon Sharpe:He missed the free throw and you don't get it. What have you done? It's kind of like a shot. Oh, you played great. Okay. But if the ball goes up and you don't get the rebound, you ain't got nothing. Yeah. Right. It's like, oh, Joey, in our sport, you get them to third down and then you can't get off the field. What good is getting them to third down if you can't get up the field? Oh, he shut them down on first and second. They ain't got nothing. But they come on the field, first down, first down, first down. Eventually, that's going to catch up with you. Eventually, they're going to put points on the board on your ass.

17:28Chad Johnson:Absolutely.

Read the full transcript

17:29Shannon Sharpe:And that's what happened. And then I don't know what took them so long to foul. I mean, hey, how many decades have five fouls? No, he had five. You got to take that foul soon. You let five seconds run off the clock for no reason. But I think Cleveland Cavaliers played unbelievable under the rest. We talked about this. This series might have been and should have been over. If Schroeder doesn't turn that ball over, it's over. Now, Joe, it might be 4-1.

17:57Chad Johnson:You're right. You're right. And when you got, you know, I think Allen and Mobley gave them great contribution tonight, meaning they were super solid. Yeah, 35-18, Joe. So, yeah, I mean, you know, you just don't – you can't have one with 18 and then another one with four. You know what I mean? So this is a great balance for them. I thought they big guns played well, and then, like, you need an other. You need somebody to come along, somebody who can help win a game, and that was Struz, bro. Hey, look, they've done what they needed to do. Now, I guess, you know, if you're Cleveland, obviously you want to close them out in six.

18:32Chad Johnson:This will be six, right? Yeah. Hey, they got to. Hold on. It depends. Where the game – where the next game at, huh? Cleveland. Cleveland. They got to close it out. They got to close it out. I feel good. I would love for this game to be one of James Harden's games where he has an out-of-body experience similar to that when he played with the goddamn Rockets. He's been too up and down. Got to protect the ball. Donovan Mitchell is going to be Donovan Mitchell. I was hoping he'd get that shut off before regulation ended, but they trapped him and got that ball out of his hands. That was a foul.

19:02Shannon Sharpe:They should have called a foul on Jared Allen. No, no, no, no, no. That was clean. Thompson got that out clean. No, I'm saying Allen tripped him. Thompson was going to get the ball and Allen tripped him. That's a foul!

19:12Chad Johnson:Hold on, do you really want to call a foul? Yes, it's a foul! In that moment? We're lost and kickoff's coming up. I don't want to miss the lineup. I'm gonna ask that man for directions. Hi there. We're trying to get to the stadium. Well, you're going to take a left at the old oak tree at this here road. Nah, I'm just kidding. 22:49Chad Johnson:It's a foul. Nah. Yes. You got, you got, you got to be cautious. You don't want to end the game and not out that. He fouled him. He's going

23:00Shannon Sharpe:but here's the problem. Tony Brothers wasn't even looking at him. Tony is standing right there. He's looking this way. Allen and Thompson are right here.

23:11Chad Johnson:Right, right, right. That was a foul. Would that foul send him to the free throw line? Yes, with 1.4 seconds on the clock. I wouldn't want to end the game like that. I wouldn't want to end the game. But you filed him. I'd rather go to overtime, honk.

23:25Shannon Sharpe:So if that's the case, guess what I should do? I'm going to file somebody because you don't want the game to end in the file. So I'm just going to file hell out of him and say, okay, let's just go to overtime.

23:33Chad Johnson:But listen, if you think about it too, if you think about it, right, if you think about football, right, every single down, Joe, no matter what, especially in the interior, you can call a foul every single time, honk, if you want to because every single time there's something going on. It has to be egregious. and you can see that trip was probably it was more of a mistake as it being done purposely so I wouldn't want the game to end on a ticket tack foul like that. But they always call tripping

23:58Shannon Sharpe:they always call that they call tripping about five times the other night. I'll give you a prime example. So would you have wanted the Philly game where Bradford the fourth held Juju that call or just let them play

24:11Chad Johnson:That was egregious on That was egregious. You want the game to end like that don't you? I understand what you mean I just don't I love that the ref he held his whistle in that moment allow them boys to go to overtime and allow the game to be decided by open play not a goddamn foul

24:29Shannon Sharpe:well guess what he allowed it to be decided to open play Allen tripped him he didn't call the foul he allowed it but no I think the Cavaliers being down and being able to be resilient and to continue to play But you know what? In order you can continue to play, Detroit got to do some dumb, boneheaded things. And they did. They did. You can't. Joe, Cade, come on, Cade. You better than this. And you know what? I wouldn't even have been mad if he took every shot. If he look at JB and say, bro, I ain't passing this ball, I don't give a damn. Unless they triple-team me, I ain't giving this ball up.

25:12Shannon Sharpe:I let the 24 second clock run out yeah because guess what you let four of them go out if they just don't score on one possession I let 24 seconds run out Joe I guess what I would win the game yeah

25:28Chad Johnson:hey look I still don't put it past Detroit to come back and win this series you think they gonna get two games in a row Joe I think they can I don't know if they will but I think they built to where they can go in Cleveland and win game six. How do you feel like that, Joe? And Tobias is struggling trying to carry the whole team on his goddamn back with no goddamn help. They went through this last series.

25:50Shannon Sharpe:No, you know, but this is the first game. This is really the first game in, what, this game six, in 13 games that Tobias did not play well. He did not play well. Now, he played well in the first half. He was making plays in the first half. I don't know what happened in the second half. But he was playing well. I just think the turnovers just caught up to him. You can't turn the ball over like that. They had – I mean, there was some costly turnovers. And Thompson, bro, you got to stop filing. Joe, what he's doing is putting them in the penalty so early. They shot 38 free throws. They shot 38. They're plus 13 from the free throw line.

26:30Chad Johnson:Hey, Joe, I got a question.

26:32Shannon Sharpe:And James Harden just going, boom, boom, boom. Now, he – you know, hey, and you know he's like, whoo, yeah, yeah. You probably – yeah. You messed those up a couple times. You'd have been, oh, he felt some type of way. With that missed free throw, they come back and had won this ball game. And Donovan Mitchell, 6-6. You can't. He's putting them in the penalty. In six minutes, they shoot free throws. And you know how aggressive Donovan and Harden are. If they don't settle, they're going to put pressure on you. And when they put pressure, look, he's a hell of a defender. But, bro, don't work on any slide drills.

27:09Shannon Sharpe:You got to work on shooting drills. You're killing your team.

27:12Chad Johnson:Hey, if Thompson's strength is defense right now and he's not really that good on offense, does that mean his twin is probably the opposite? No, his twin is exactly the same. His twin is a little better offensively. A little better. Right. Yeah.

27:25Shannon Sharpe:A little better.

27:27Chad Johnson:But I agree. Man, this is an offensive game nowadays. Now, if you're great defensive like he is, man, listen, he could be a hell of a player in this league, bro. It's just too many times he don't even look at the damn basket when he got the ball for me. Yes, I agree. And it's like, you know, it's just so much. And then when you think about Harden and Mitchell, see, these are two prolific scorers in this league who really know how to use their body and use your aggressiveness against you. Yep. Yeah. So we know you're going to be trying to deny this, that, and it's just a little slight change of pace, bro, to where I speed up, slow down.

28:08Chad Johnson:Now you're running to me now. You know what I mean? Now you done picked up y 'all in the penalty. I agree with you, Unc. This is a learning experience for Thompson, bro, guarding these two experienced guards who are drawing a lot of fouls on him. I thought he learned last year, Joe. He got to be better.

28:22Shannon Sharpe:You know who he had to guard last year? Bronson. Who? And what Bronson do? Stop, let him run into it, and guess what? Yeah, same. James Harden and Donovan Mitchell are the exact type. They're different type players, but they're smart. And they know how, like you said, Joe, use your aggressive against you. All they're going to do is get you on their back, keep your back there, dribble the basketball, and guess what? Yep. Pump, you're going to try to block it, and guess what? They're going to jump back into you, and they're going to the free throw line. You see, the A and one of them shooting too.

28:56Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, yeah. You went through this last year with Jalen Brunson. Jalen Brunson is the master of that.

29:03Chad Johnson:Yeah, bro.

29:04Shannon Sharpe:And where do you think he's learning from? James Harden started this at Houston. Would that dribble keep that dribble alive? He got you on his back? We're lost. And kickoff's coming up. I don't want to miss the lineup. I'm going to ask that man for directions. Hi there. We're trying to get to the stadium. 33:41Chad Johnson:They just too good in that aspect of creating fouls, and they using it against Detroit. But, man, Detroit.

33:51Shannon Sharpe:They're going to be kicking themselves. They let this one get away. They let this one get away. No, people are like, but you want Detroit to win. I don't care. I want the game. To be honest, I want game seven.

34:02Chad Johnson:Because guess what? Yeah, I do.

34:04Shannon Sharpe:Come on, we get something to talk about.

34:05Chad Johnson:Listen, hey, I tell you ahead of time, I don't see the Cavs and Donald Mitchell and James Harden letting this game get to seven. I just don't. I'm just telling you now, especially playing at home, you want to close it out, get you a little bit of rest before you have to deal with them goddamn nicks. Yeah. Damn, I don't know. Well, that's the mindset you hope they will have. They do got it, Joe. And, Joe, listen, you've been wrong all goddamn playoff series long, Joe. Yeah. Hey, as great as the knowledge as the game of basketball is that you do have, I have been right. So I think your best bet is to probably go along with what I'm saying.

34:45Chad Johnson:Listen, listen, hold on. I'm not counting Detroit out. I know you – I understand what Cleveland should be thinking and what they probably are thinking. But I know what Detroit thinking too, like one game at a time. We got to go down here and get this game and bring it back to – We got to have a game seven, period. We got to win game six. So we're going to throw the whole sink at y 'all. Well, hold on. Who is the whole sink? Tobias and Cunningham. That's the whole sink. No, I see they switched up. What happened to – His back. Duncan Robinson was out of his back. Sore back. Well, I mean, Jenkins gave him great contribution.

35:21Chad Johnson:I mean, hell, he started off the game. He scored by the first seven points. Yeah, but the same thing.

35:25Shannon Sharpe:Joe, they need Duncan spacing. They need his spacing because you got to guard him because he's looking to get that three off. To get that three off, yeah. So, I just think the thing is – look, and I agree with you. I thought Jenkins played well. He had 8 of 17, 2 of 8 from the 3, 1 of 1 from the free throw line. But Tobias was 1 of 7 from the 3. He didn't shoot a free throw, which lets me know he was 7.

35:49Chad Johnson:And he wasn't aggressive. Yeah.

35:52Shannon Sharpe:He was 7. James Harden, 11 of 14. What do you call him, 6 of 6? Donovan Mitchell, Evan Mobley, 5 of 6. Jared Allen, 4 of 5. Shrewd a 3 of 5. Strews, 2 of 2. I mean, look at everybody except Dean Wade. Wade would just get the cardio in. But for the most part, all those guys, look at this. And then, oh man, Durin.

36:18Chad Johnson:Hey, how tall you said Durin is, huh?

36:21Shannon Sharpe:She's like damn seven foot. Six nine.

36:24Chad Johnson:Seven foot. Seven.

36:26Shannon Sharpe:Mm-hmm. He just right now, right now he a notch above Aiden. Nah. Is that bad? That's a notch? That's it. Because you know what -

36:38Chad Johnson:Have you been watching him play these playoffs? Yeah, I've been watching the entire time. I ain't got no choice. Hey, listen, listen. What I've noticed is he trying to get the ball now and trade his own - You saw that? Oh, Joe, you saw that too, huh?

36:53Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, it lead right to a damn turnover. What the hell you doing?

37:01Chad Johnson:You know damn well that ain't your game. he got he got he got to add he got listen i i hate when y 'all talk about players right obviously i'm not sure how basketball works but um if there's a flaw in my game and something i don't have and i know it's being exposed in times that are important like right now i wait till the offseason to come and add whatever that weakness is and add it to my game oh joe he tried to do

37:26Shannon Sharpe:this in the game i'm like patrick ewan y 'all remember patrick ewan he started doing to me It's an aim. So when you practice that? When did I see you work on that? Have you ever worked on that play before? Have you ever worked on that shot before? But so now you get in the game and you wanna try that.

37:44Chad Johnson:Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm like bro, when I saw you do that? I said, listen, I seen the man dribble between his legs. I said, hold on now. All right, damn, we just, hey, hey, hey, like Peter Paul, Peter Paul say try it out. Damn, damn. Hey, during like shit, I can't get nothing going. I'm finna hoist up something, he said I could turn right to it, turn over. I'm like,

38:07Shannon Sharpe:I was like, gee. I'm like, bro, off season. Ocho, you know it's hard to really work on your game during the season. You can't, you can't. Because you got meetings, you got practice, you got games. You don't have that time to just devote two, three hours to just go over a route running or move. Yeah, you work on little moves. You know, we got individual periods. Oh, Joe, but we ain't really doing anything. You can't work on it. You basically, that's just a warm-up. Yeah. That ain't nothing. Just some warm-up. Yeah. Off-season, when you work on your game, I'm working on stuff individually. Then if y 'all get runs, Joe, you know, you get your runs in, I try to put it to use.

38:48Shannon Sharpe:Hey, I'm working on stuff in the off-season. Now, when I get back to minicamp, now this is my opportunity. Let me see. Let me see. Hey, let me see how this is. Right. Yeah. Right.

38:56Chad Johnson:Oh, man. And you know what? That foundation of craftsmanship based on the position you play, Joe and on, it's built in offseason. It's built in offseason. It is. Once you get into that structured environment, whether it's basketball, football, hockey, I don't care what it is you play, it's all X's and O's. You got to already be the finished product once you get there. All that trying to work on stuff and change a game in the middle of the season, trying to add stuff, ain't no room for that. Nope.

39:27Shannon Sharpe:because like like joe you look you can tell this joe you land in the city late at night i mean you might get in one two in the morning okay you want to sleep in so by the time you land by the time to get your ass off the bus i mean off the plane get on the bus get to the hotel it might be 233 what you got shoot around you got shoot around 11 joe and well on days like that you they may

39:52Chad Johnson:yeah, you may have a shoot around probably 11 or if you got a game the next day, we'll probably just have a meeting at like noon or one o 'clock in the hotel. So you can't work on your game?

40:00Shannon Sharpe:So what you gonna do, you can't go to the gym and work on your game. Now you going straight to the game and you still can't work on it. Yeah, yeah. So everything is just rolling so quick. That's why the off season is so important. That's where you build a foundation of what I'm going to do, hopefully be able to carry over into the season. Yeah, absolutely. That's why we always preach how important, you know, look, I get it. Go ahead and get your little vacation out the way. Because when you come back, and set that foundation, Ocho, the foundation is everything. Strong foundation, there can be no cracks.

40:35Shannon Sharpe:There can be no, I don't care. Because one pig built his house on a solid foundation. The other pigs built on some bulljacks. Bullshit, yeah, yeah. They a bad ass had to run to the homeboy house. or they're about to be bacon. So get your foundation. Your foundation is everything. And work from there. But –

41:00Chad Johnson:And have an – And you got to have a mean routine, bro. I'm talking about a routine that you stick to no matter what the hell going on. You know what, Joe? That routine becomes boring too, Joe. It is, bro. I'm talking about it all the time. I'm talking about it all the time. That routine becomes boring. It's monotonous. It is, bro. Hey, find you one of two things. every player you have to have a niche. There has to be something that's special about you because everybody, it's a bunch of receivers. It's 32 teams, but you got to have one thing about you that is special, that separates you from everybody else.

41:30Chad Johnson:Everybody's fast, Joe. Everybody can't, Joe. But what is it about you that makes you different from the next person, not only on your team, but on the other 31 teams, which creates that value. That's what creates the value in you, Joe. I can do this, but nobody else can even though they can run and catch but this one special thing about me this is my niche and this is why i'm a value to whatever team i play for yeah yeah right what we say all

41:59Shannon Sharpe:the time greatness is boring because this is doing the same thing over and over and hoping for the same result see insanity is doing something over and over and hoping for a different result Greatness is doing the same thing over and over and hoping for the same result. You see people talking, man, I don't know how you eat the same thing over and over. I can see you don't eat the same thing over and over. I can see how you look. I see big things in your future. And I ain't talking about a job promotion. But people get mad at me, Joe. Man, how you, bro, it's really not that complicated. It's not, bro.

42:37Shannon Sharpe:It's really not. I say what you're doing is, you're mistaken habit for hard work. You think because you do something every day, you actually working hard. No. You're doing that out of habit. Man, I get up every day at 4 o 'clock. What you do? Man, I be busy. Bees are busy. Ants are busy. What are you doing to become great? I think we should also highlight this, guys. Everybody does not want to be great. True. We're specifically talking about people that want to be great, have a burning and a desire to be great.

43:16Chad Johnson:Yes. Yeah. Yeah.

43:21Shannon Sharpe:It requires not only discipline, but it requires a commitment, not a promise. A promise is like pie crust. It's thin and easily broken. It requires a commitment. it. Everybody committed to do this thing every day, all the time. Dream about it. Think about it. Live it.

43:44Man, all you do is work out, man.

43:47Shannon Sharpe:What else you got? Because that's all I want to do. I want to be great because I do realize this as a professional athlete, there's a very short shelf life. I'm not a lawyer. I'm not a doctor. Small window. I don't get 30 years at this. I don't Finite period of time. I can walk away and say, I ate. Man, if I had just ate better. Man, you know what, if I hadn't gone out, Joe. Man, if I had just worked out a little harder. Man, if I had just, ooh, boy, if I could have studied, if I knew what I knew then, what I know now.

44:18Chad Johnson:Now, yeah. Hello, hello.

44:23Shannon Sharpe:Man, come on, Duren. You, I mean, ain't no way you should be eight. Nine points?

44:32Chad Johnson:Hey Joe, who's the NBA guru when it comes to offense, where most of the players go to? It got to be one person. Oh, damn. Meaning like trainers and all that? Yeah, yeah, trainer, like off-season trainer. Like if you want to go for your offensive game. What's the guy with the beard? He used to be the Cavaliers. Who was - Chris Johnson. Chris Johnson out there in LA.

44:54Shannon Sharpe:Nah, there's no guy. He used to be coach. He was with Ty Lue. He was with the Lakers last year. No, no, no, no, no. Phil Handy. A lot of guys go to Phil. Kyrie worked with Phil. He worked with a lot of guys. Phil worked with a lot of guys. Phil is great at what he does. Yeah, that's what he...

45:11Chad Johnson:Him and Chris Johnson.

45:13Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, well, Rico Hines does the UCLA runs. Yeah.

45:17Chad Johnson:But, you know, Rico, he's an assistant coach for the Philadelphia 76. Oh, is he? Yeah, but he still had them runs out there in LA. He still got all them young guys together in the summer. And, you know, they play pickup. He teach them how to play, Ocho. He got a nice thing. I played out there back in my day, man. He been doing that for a minute. I played at UCLA. I did one time. I did the run one time with Westbrook. Did you really? I was not saying I was a baby. I was young, but I was still able to move where I wasn't a liability out there with them boys. And I tell you one thing, I got the ball.

45:51Chad Johnson:I ain't do nothing with it but pass that bitch. Even if it had me looking silly. Yeah, yeah. The boy back there getting it, boy. They getting it. Ocho, since I came into the league, you know, when I told you, when we had Master P on here, and I told y 'all Master P got on our team, boy, it'd be some real hoopers in there, bro. Hey, Ben Davis and Paul Pierce used to host them games in the summer. Used to go down up there, bro. You know who can hang with them boys, even though he never played that level, but he's good in that. T.O. T.O. Yeah. T.O. can play.

46:25Shannon Sharpe:But you know what, guys? I don't know. I don't know what it is. Because a part of me think that if I were to go somewhere and I get some assistance, he might take credit for my success and I don't want nobody to take credit for my success. Yeah. Man, I'm going to Elijah Wan. If I'm a big man and I want to work on my offensively, who got feet? What big man had feet like Elijah Wan? LeBron went to him. So many guys have gone to it, developed the up and under, the fade away. Wimby think about it not just Rockets players outside players he said hey I ain't hoarding this knowledge if you want it I'm more than willing to share it with you but you gotta break it I don't care you don't know how good you can be if you don't care who gets the credit

47:21Shannon Sharpe:man I know I know if I was a basketball player I know where am I deficient at? I'm watching and I'm seeing where I'm deficient at. Who can help me?

47:33Chad Johnson:Working on that. Yeah. I'm going to get right. I'm working on that. Matter of fact, Joe, I might go see Phil Handy before I play you. Go ahead. Yeah, I might do that. And sharpen up my little foundation. You can go see whoever the hell you want to see. That's what I want you to think. play boy. Yeah. That's what I want you to think. I tell you one thing. I tell you one thing. Back in high school, you know what they used to call me? Oh my goodness. Oh, he? Hey, hey, hey. Hey, hey, hey. That was my nickname, high school. Ah. Yeah, he good way to use that. He good way. Hey, hey. I like that one. I used that one.

48:25Chad Johnson:Hey, I used that with a day at the workshop, boy.

48:27Shannon Sharpe:Oh, you used it all?

48:28Chad Johnson:I had to use that with a young boy, man. That was a good one.

48:34Shannon Sharpe:The next segment is brought to you by Tommy John, where comfort is the new power move. And the Lakers pulled a power move on LeBron on March 30th. We're lost. And kickoff's coming up. I don't want to miss the lineup. I'm going to ask that man for directions. Hi there. We're trying to get to the stadium. 52:44Shannon Sharpe:First, the Lakers defeated the Cavaliers to secure LeBron James his record-breaking 1 ,229th win. It was the same night Luka passed 15 ,000 points. Rui passed 5 ,000 points. J.J. Redick reached 100 wins. According to Dave McMenamin, Lakers' GM Rob Palenka gave the game ball to Redick over anybody else. And LeBron felt Palenka's priority was yet another example of the Lakers taking him for granted. On other notes, he has had a great relationship with J.J. Redick. One thing the Lakers got right. The Lakers' approach and how they show interest in retaining him and their plan for any discount will be a factor.

53:30Shannon Sharpe:LeBron James, here's LeBron James before Cleveland and with LeBron. Seven years before he got there, there was 219 and 223, a 40 % win rate. The seven years with him, they won 63 % of their games. LeBron James, Miami, before he arrived, there was 149 and 179, a 45 % win rate. His four years there, they were 224 and 88, a 72 % win rate. Cleveland, when he returned, they were 97 and 215. They won 31 % of their games. And his four years there, they went to four NBA finals. They won one of those NBA finals, and they were 211 and 117, a 64 % win rate. The eight years before LeBron got there, there was 269 and 371.

54:21Shannon Sharpe:They won 42 % of their games. In the eight years with LeBron, they're 357 and 278. That's 56 % win rate. So overall, before he arrived at your franchise, you're winning about 40 % of your game. Once he's there, you win about 62 % of your games. So basically, that's a 22 % increase. Now, people are like, oh, LeBron ain't do nothing. Eight years in Milwaukee, How many championships does Giannis have, Joe? One. How many NBA Finals have he gone to? One, right? One. He's Finals MVP. In eight years in Denver, how many championships have Jokic won, Joe? One. Hmm, interesting. Now, Giannis is deemed successful.

55:11Shannon Sharpe:Jokic is deemed successful. Only one, Ocho, with the same amount of championships. A finals MVP, only one is deemed unsuccessful. You see how they did that, Ocho? You see? Ocho, if I don't like you, you can't do enough good to make me like you. Yes, son. Hello, hello. But if I do, you can't do enough wrong to make me dislike you. We see that going around. We don't get political here, but we see what's going on. You see what I do at Ocho? See how I did it?

55:38Chad Johnson:I'm with you when you write. Hey, hey, hey, hey, you watch a lot of Madlock coming up, then you're in. Hey, that was my guy, Madlock. Yeah, I see you.

55:48Shannon Sharpe:Ironside, I don't know if y 'all remember Raymond Burr. Ironside, he was in a wheelchair.

55:52Chad Johnson:Yeah, yeah. Madlock, heat of the night. Hey, what you know about heat of the night, boy? Come on, old Joe. Hey, boy, me and my grandma used to watch heat of the night, boy. Man, come on.

56:02Shannon Sharpe:Hey, Joe, let me give you – I want to give these Lakers fans and all these Lakers – now, this is what the Lakers record was. In 2013-14, there was 27-55. They didn't go to the playoffs. The next year, there was 21-61. They didn't go to the playoffs. The next year, they were 17-65. They didn't go to the playoffs. The year before, and in 2016, when LeBron James took off the NBA championship, they were 26-56. But, boy, the Lakers were bad. Boy, people couldn't wait to see the Lakers. Who? Huh? In L.A. winning them a mile game? That would have won. You do realize in that time frame, they got Brandon Ingram.

56:44Shannon Sharpe:They got Alonzo Ball They got Ju Randall Now how in the world would you be able to get the number two pick in the draft If you win If you win the playoffs How is that possible How you get Alonzo Ball If you win the playoffs

57:04Chad Johnson:Right

57:06Shannon Sharpe:My granny used to say it all the time Something in the milk can't clean

57:13Shannon Sharpe:I'll let y 'all keep on talking but I hold on ain't no way Kobe Kobe go with that

57:26give me Kobe

57:27Shannon Sharpe:pull up Kobe's last eight years honestly I'm in NBA how many times let's see what he did

57:33Chad Johnson:his last eight years

57:34Shannon Sharpe:that's all we want last eight we just go compare it and contrast it Because I tweeted something in 2012 that I said, LeBron, Kobe, and Jordan were the greatest players I'd ever seen. And then somebody retweeted it. I say, but, you know, four NBA titles, four finals MVP, seven all-NBA selection. I say, my mind changed. I thought this was the girl for me, Joe. But after she left behind dry, I changed my mind.

58:06Chad Johnson:Yeah, yeah.

58:08Shannon Sharpe:But people make it seem like you can't have it. You can't change your mind. So once you say something, I'm sure at some point in time, you probably might have thought this football player. I'm sure a lot of people say, well, Joe Montana was the greatest quarterback, or John Elway or Dan Marino was the greatest quarterback, Peyton Manning. And then here come this kid that went in the sixth round from Michigan.

58:32Shannon Sharpe:I'm sure at some point in time, somebody said this guy was the best defensive player, whether it was Merlin Olsen, whether it was Deacon Jones, it was Bob Lilly, Randy White, Mean Joe. But then this kid out of North Carolina came along. They had 56 on his back. And I'm sure the corners, they probably said, well, Dick Knight train lane. Nah, it was Lester Hayes, Mel Blunt, Ken Riley.

59:00Chad Johnson:Ken Riley, what you know about Ken Riley, huh?

59:02Shannon Sharpe:This was Kenny Stiffle. for Fam. So this, now this little kid, skinny kid from Fam, from Fort Miles.

59:10Chad Johnson:Ken Riley.

59:16Chad Johnson:Fam, you a rattler.

59:20Chad Johnson:You don't know nothing about them rattlers, huh, man? Hey, you know, Ken Riley, hey Joe, Ken Riley, the only banger in the Hall of Fame with Anthony Munoz. Oh really? Oh yeah, he don't get enough credit man. Enough credit boy, he was good boy. I learned something new every day. Also we gonna start with last year.

59:44Shannon Sharpe:Last year Kobe retired at 37 years of age. He averaged 17 points, we're getting four rebounds, three assists. 2014 at 36 he was 22, six rebounds, six assists. In 2013, 14 he was 35, he averaged 14 points, four rebounds, six assists. At 2012-13, at 34, he was 27, 6, and 6. At 2011-12, he was 33. He averaged 28, 5, and 5. At 2010-2011, he was 25, 5, and 5. He shot 45 % in 2010. He shot 43 % in 2011. He shot 46 % in 2012. he shot 42 % in 2013 37 % in 2014 36 % in 2015 run me bronze run me bronze cause we like to do context it wouldn't be fair we gotta provide context

1:00:45Chad Johnson:yes sir listen because you can't argue points and facts without context and most of the time today especially for you Hunk you want to be factual and you want to have the facts and the stats to support whatever it is you're trying to get across.

1:01:01Shannon Sharpe:Because see, I think the thing Michael Beasley taught us, he said, man, you judging by decisions, but you didn't know the choices that I had. Ooh.

1:01:11Shannon Sharpe:I want to just go provide a little context for you because I know y 'all like context. I got to give you why I said something or why this. Because, you know, y 'all told me Kobe was still that apex predator. that's what y 'all told me that's what laker nation told me yeah that's what you told me

1:01:34Shannon Sharpe:oh we know bro no no no no no no no no no no surprise it don't surprise it

1:01:40Chad Johnson:don't sport a surprise okay i got a question before you read off bronze numbers during those times where kobe's numbers were what they were was he injured during that time whoa whoa hello

1:01:50Shannon Sharpe:All of them said the man 35, 36, 37. My guy 40.

1:01:54Chad Johnson:So you're going to compare the numbers based on age at the same time?

1:02:00Shannon Sharpe:Remember LeBron didn't start the season. LeBron got hurt. Remember he missed the first 15 games? Okay, yeah, yes, sir. Yeah. So this is what he did when he got to the Lakers. 27, eight and a half, eight. Do you realize there have only been four players? To average that, the O's counting up, I think it was, I think Oscar did it. I think Jordan did it. Russ did it. And Harden did it. But all of those guys did it before they turned 30. He did it at 32-33. These guys were doing it at 25-26. So what guys was doing at 25-26? Go James was doing it at 32-33. And then the second year, he was 25-8-10 championship.

1:02:50Shannon Sharpe:And then he went 25-8-8. 30-8-6. 29-8-7. 26-7-8. Last year, moving to the second option with Luka there, he gave you a robust 24. What was it, 24-8-7? And then this year, yeah, he didn't give you nothing but a little 24 spot. Add the second option to Luka. He gave you 24, 8, and 8. And then this year, at the third option, 21, 6, and 7, shooting 51%, basically 52 % from the floor. Has he ever shot less than 50 % when he was with the Lakers?

1:03:38Mmm.

1:03:46Shannon Sharpe:He shot 40. Okay. The year they won the championship, so his second year there, when he averaged 25, 8, and 10, he shot 49.3%. Other than that, Joe, he's never shot less than 50 % from the Lakers. Hey, I don't think people understand how tough that is to do. Like, to be that efficient, especially as you get up in age, bro.

1:04:15Chad Johnson:The man 41 years old, what did he shot this year, 51 %?

1:04:18Shannon Sharpe:I think 51.5. Bro.

1:04:24Chad Johnson:I guarantee you, nobody's ever done that.

1:04:30Shannon Sharpe:He can't do enough good. If he walk on water, people say the only reason he walk is because he can't swim. If he could swim, he would swim in the water. He wouldn't walk. He cured cancer. They say, what about diabetes, Ocho? Yeah, right.

1:04:43Chad Johnson:You know what the funny thing is about this conversation?

1:04:46Shannon Sharpe:Yes.

1:04:47Chad Johnson:And you think about what Kobe means to LA. Yes. You think about what Kobe means for the Lakers, what he's done for that franchise, you know, from the time he got there, you know.

1:04:58Shannon Sharpe:Yes.

1:04:59Chad Johnson:To the time, to his untimely demise. Yes. Despite what he looked like towards the end of his career, I don't think there's anybody that can come to the Lakers and unsee what Kobe did. Just no matter what. Even what you're reading off the stats, even if you read even what you're reading off the facts yes and how great lebron has been for them those are the kobe fans or those that appreciate what kobe has done for them nothing nothing will unseat how they feel about that man so when the conversation nobody tried to i i understand that that'll be the equivalent of all of a sudden chase chase gonna have better numbers than you

1:05:39Shannon Sharpe:but that don't take away from what you did nor is chase trying to erase what you did see what people See, here's the problem that you're running into, Ocho. And Joe, correct me if I'm wrong, you step in at any point in time. Because it was Kobe and LeBron for the longest period of time.

1:05:55Chad Johnson:Yeah.

1:05:58Shannon Sharpe:I can't get past that. You trying to come make us forget about Kobe. You trying to erase Kobe's legacy. All those Kobe's legacy is enriched in Mount Rushmore.

1:06:13Chad Johnson:Cemented.

1:06:13Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, but people can't. See, I can't look. Kobe is Kobe. No matter how you slice it, Kobe is a top three Laker all time, no matter how you slice it. Some people say Kobe. Some people say Magic. Some people might slot Kareem. But however you slice it, he ain't getting out of the top three. Right.

1:06:37Chad Johnson:Right.

1:06:38Shannon Sharpe:There have been some other greats. You got Elgin Baylor. You got Will Chamberlain. You got Jerry West. you got James Worthy, you got Mikan, you got LeBron Kobe ain't getting out of the top three and that's okay it's okay to say man Kobe is great but LeBron is a bad it's almost like if I say LeBron is bad I'm saying Kobe ain't no good

1:07:01Chad Johnson:right, right, see that's what the problem

1:07:03Shannon Sharpe:is Ocho, it's like if I say man T.O. was a bad boy what about Ocho, Ocho was great too, I'm talking about T.O. Right. If I say Jerry's good, oh, you don't like moss? Man, you know what I love? You know what I love in the morning on my cereal show? Bananas. Why you don't put blueberries on them? Damn, I don't dislike blueberries. I'm saying, I'm highlighting, I like bananas. You can like what you want. Yeah. But to say, I hate LeBron, and he ain't been good for the Lakers, you're not being just, you're being disingenuous. Okay.

1:07:38Chad Johnson:I got you. Thanks, thanks. I think, and when you think about it, the fact that Kobe, that was the only team that Kobe ever played for was the Lakers. You know what I mean? He won, what, five titles? And, you know, yeah, they have had a disdain for LeBron over the years. When he won the Lakers, when you won the Lakers and you come playing against Kobe and y 'all, Amano, Amano, yeah, they had a disdain for him. And the fact that he's probably moved around to a few different franchises and left his stain, you know. I mean, they embraced him, don't get me wrong. But, yeah, they would never put him over Kobe.

1:08:15Shannon Sharpe:Nor should they. And he didn't go there to try to be – he wanted to go. Because think about it. We just read off what they were before he got there. Right. They was winning 17 games, Ocho. 27 games. You were damn near getting a lot. You were damn near getting the number one overall pick. It's okay. hey, I like Kobe. I love Kobe too. Yeah. Kobe and Bron were my two favorite players. Kobe was my favorite player before LeBron. Byrne is from D.C. Prince George County. He knew about Kevin Durant. I ain't know nothing about Kevin Durant. He said, hey, Sean, let me tell you what I do. I'll give you LeBron if you let me get Kevin Durant because it was my turn to take the next great player coming out of college.

1:09:03Shannon Sharpe:So it was my turn to get KD. He wanted KD because KD was from his neck of the woods. I already had Kobe. I said, hold on. You going to give me LeBron? And I still got Kobe for Kevin Durant? Oh, yeah, I jumped on that with both feet. I jumped on that. Oh, Joe. Joe, I jumped on that with both feet.

1:09:23Chad Johnson:Yeah.

1:09:24Shannon Sharpe:I got one in the East and one in the West, and all you want is Kevin Durant. Man, please. Got it. You remember they thought they were going to the finals, and LeBron averaged 38, 8, and 8, and Orlando put them out. You remember they had the Muppet series with Kobe and LeBron? I still got a T-shirt. Now, y 'all know how long ago that's been. That's been, what, 2018? I still got a T-shirt 16 years later with LeBron and Kobe and the Muppets on it. Y 'all remember the commercial you used to have on? And Kobe be going crazy, and LeBron's like, come on, Kobe, man, stop.

1:10:00Chad Johnson:Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I used to like them. You can, you can, look, I can love a player,

1:10:08Shannon Sharpe:but I ain't going to hate the, man, look. What I look like, hate, what Ocho look like hating somebody. Ocho, prime example. You could have, I mean, I think it helped because you and T.O. was best friends before he ever arrived in Cincinnati. Yeah. But if somebody came and they're trying to help you win a championship, man, I don't know why, I don't, the fans, they're going to say, man, I don't know why he came here. We got Ocho, Ocho, I got. Ocho can still be y 'all guy, but I'm trying to help Ocho. Ocho want me to come help him get a championship.

1:10:36Chad Johnson:Hey, Joe. What was that? I stood on that table while I was in Mike Brown office. I told Marvin, man, go get 81. I don't care what you got to do. I don't care what, man, go get 81, boy. Boy, I'm talking about, that was such a joy. I was like a little kid in the candy store, Joe. Just knowing my dog was coming to play with me. I'm getting ready to be able to play with one of the best in the world, boy, Joe. I'm talking about top three all time, Joe. We on the same team? Yeah. Oh, hell, Joe. I told you, you get there, boy. I ain't got no problem being Robin the Batman. Oh, I'm taking a backseat, Joe.

1:11:16Chad Johnson:Absolutely.

1:11:17Shannon Sharpe:Think about that. Think about that, what Ocho had done for that organization. At that point in time, Ocho was the best receiver. I joked with him and, you know, talk about downtown Freddie Brown. How do I talk about Ike Curtis? Yeah. Green, A.J. Green. You had Slim Pickens. I was in the era with Slim Pickens. I was like, but Ocho was the best. And for him to say, you know what? I slide to number two. Yeah. Quick. After six Pro Bowls in a 10-year span, all pro, the leading receiver.

1:11:51Chad Johnson:There ain't many guys going to do that. Hey, Joe, I understood what was coming. Joe, I understood what was coming into that building, boy. You hear me? Yeah, yeah. Hey, hey, was it more of, obviously, he was your partner, but did you look at it like, damn, I know he's going to take a lot of pressure? No, no, no, no, because I didn't see it as pressure. I was going to get mine regardless. I understood with that dynamic how he could come help us and elevate us offensively. I understood what he could do in the slot, on the outside. And then not only that, they were always playing design for me. And Joe, when I played, I didn't need a whole bunch of volume catches.

1:12:26Chad Johnson:all I needed was four or five catches a game. Joe, I'm getting off. I wasn't doing bubble screens and slant routes. Joe, I'm running routes. I need about two or three balls. I'm over 100. Hey, but nowadays you'll be running a little bubble screen. You don't want that bubble screen. Hey, Joe. Hey, Joe. Joe, that makes me uncomfortable. I need to know, I need to be running routes. You heard me? Yeah, when they run that bubble, you gotta have some wiggle on. I got wiggle, Joe, but I don't want to wiggle where everybody's in front of me. I want to know where everybody's going to be at while I'm running.

1:13:10Chad Johnson:You get what I'm saying?

1:13:11Shannon Sharpe:That side impact is that collision. Cause you gotta realize, I catch this, I'm coming inside. Here comes DT, here comes N, here comes line middle, here comes middle backer.

1:13:22Chad Johnson:I don't want none of that, Joe. And you know what? And I can be honest, Joe. That's not my strength. With the ball in my hands, that ain't my goddamn strength. I can't do what Chase do. He bouncing off tackles, bouncing off linebackers. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. That ain't me.

1:13:38Shannon Sharpe:I want to catch the ball, beat the corner, outrun the safety. Man, I got to tackle the D in the middle backer, the safety, corner. Oh, no. I don't want no part of that. Here's the tweet, Joe. Here's the tweet. that they've been digging up. Okay, let me see. Look at the date when I tweeted that. What did it say? The greatest basketball player of all time. God, Aaron Jordan, Kobe, in that order. What year is that? Hey, look at the date on that, Ocho.

1:14:07Chad Johnson:2012. Yeah, March 11, 2012.

1:14:10Shannon Sharpe:Okay, tell the people, Ocho, tell the people what happened in June of 2012 that year in Miami. I'm U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy.
