In short
Nightcap Hour 1 covers two sports topics and one NBA-news segment. First, it reacts to Portugal’s 2-1 win over Croatia in stoppage time, earning a Round of 16 matchup vs Spain.
Key claims
Portugal played “lackadaisical,” created few chances, and needed to be more aggressive; Croatia’s late equalizer was disallowed due to offside after review.
Notable examples
Ronaldo scoring in stoppage time; Croatia’s offside call that prevented extra time; discussion of how offside works (timing relative to the defensive line). Second, it previews Spain’s dominance, citing Spain’s 3-0 win over Austria with possession and chance creation advantages, and argues Spain is “one of the teams to beat.” Third, it pivots to Jalen Brown addressing his Celtics trade context: he criticizes perceived lack of respect from Brad Stevens, says his integrity was attacked, and argues against reliance on anonymous sources.
Guests
Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson (former pro bowler/all-pro; NFL wide receiver) and Joe Johnson (7-time NBA All-Star; “ISO Joe”).

Ronaldo in Portugal booked their spot into the round of 16, scoring in stopping time to narrowly defeat Croatia 2-1. Croatia nearly scored the equalizer deep in the extra time, but the goal was disallowed because the review said he was marked offside, disallowing the goal. Portugal will now face Spain in the round of 16 on Monday.
6:35Shannon Sharpe:Boy, it was a tough goal for Portugal and then it looked like they had it under control and then just when you thought they were safe Croatia thought they had the tying goal but Baroud, he was offside Ocho, what did you like about the way Portugal did play today? I mean, they were okay, Unc. They're not giving me like, oh my goodness, Portugal looks really good. They have a chance to win this tournament. Obviously, I want Cristiano to win his World Cup trophy, but if you look at Spain Unc and Joe, if you watch France if you look at some of these other teams something about their energy and the way they move the ball and the way they play Portugal just looks so lackadaisical they don't have very many chances on ball they're supposed to be have one of the best midfields in the game, Tonkinjo they don't dictate the way they do they don't attack the way they should they're too timid in the way they play, just waiting on something to happen and obviously I don't know.
7:35They barely got back Croatia and now they got to play Spain.
7:38Chad Johnson:Oh my goodness. Hey man, listen. Okay, Ocho, for a guy who hadn't really been watching soccer, bro. Hey, this World Cup has been very entertaining. It's been very exciting. Because I want to see goals. I want to see the ball in the back of the damn net at the end of the day. You know what I mean? And when I watch these games, I'm like, damn, did Croatia get cheated? because I don't understand the offside part because I thought we had a hell of a game. I'm like, what happened? Nah, nah, nah. Hey, Joe, you can't cherry pick. So you got to cross the... No, no. You have a defensive line, right? Let's say Portugal.
8:14You have four defenders in the back. With those four defenders in the back, Croatia can't be behind those defenders. You have to be even or in front of those defenders. So you got to time it. Let's say if you want to... Let's say a fast break. If you want to make a run, you have to time it from the guy kicking the ball but you got to be even with the defenders. You can't be behind them cherry picking like that cheating in a sense. It's like you going to transition right on the fast break and somebody on the other team, they just stay on the other side of the goal and wait for you to get the rebound.
8:47I got you.
8:48Chad Johnson:I understand. It's been fun to watch your boy Ronaldo and that boy, he's some type of specimen and that boy is rocked up. Yeah, yeah. I'm saying.
9:02Shannon Sharpe:He finally got him a goal. This was, had they lost this game, Mocho, this would have been terrible. This would have been awful for them. They were able to pull it out. They got, you know, the Croatian team, they got a goal early in the second half. And then Ronaldo got the equalizer in their latent stoppage time. They get the goal. Croatia thinks they tied it up. And there's Ocho, as you mentioned, he was offside. It would have been very, very interesting if they had to go to extra time. what would have happened in this game. But you could see the disappointment on the Croatians' face because obviously, you know, some of them, this is the last time they're going to be in the World Cup.
9:36Shannon Sharpe:You don't know if and when you're going to get back. And like you said, some of them, they're not coming back. No. It was a very exciting game. What we thought it would be, I mean, all the eyes were on Ronaldo. They wanted to see because it's been a great look. Think about it. Ronaldo has, excuse me, Messi has six goals. Mbappe has six goals. Holland has five goals. Kane has five goals. Scoring has been on a monumental level from the stars. You know, that's what you want to see, Ocho. You want to see, Joe, you know, hey, NBA playoffs, let my stars shine. Let Shea shine. Let Jokic shine. Let Wimby and Brunson and these guys, let them shine.
10:14Shannon Sharpe:That's what we want to see. And in this World Cup, we've seen that. With the exception of your guy. What you mean? Ronaldo. He's been scoring. Man, that little old two, little two, three little goals he got. Hey, but hey, hey, listen, you have to understand, man. Listen, he's in a different position than all the other players that are scoring at a high clip. Holland scoring at a high clip because of his team facilitating to him. Messi is Messi. Joe, he got the ball. He like the PG.
10:43Chad Johnson:He like the PG. He got the rock in his head and all. Hey, and you know what? And when he don't got it, all he got, all he do is walk around, walk around, relax. When the ball come to him, boom. I call Messi, Uncle Joe, Messi is the master of moments because that's what the World Cup is all about. It's about capitalizing on those moments. You don't get that many of them, but when he does get them, oh, he's putting that ball in the back of the net. Oh, yeah, yeah.
11:05Shannon Sharpe:The question is, you said putting those guys, at his age, could Ronaldo still do it, what these guys are doing if he was put in position? Because from what I've heard and from what I've read, this team seem to play better when he's not out there. no I wouldn't say that I wouldn't say that in general obviously he plays the nine and the nine Joe would be similar to in basketball term it would be the center so everyone could do whatever they need to do on the outside all Ronaldo's job is to do is to be able to shift with the team in which way the ball goes in certain moments you make your runs he really has no effect on anybody else he's the last option anyway why is that?
11:48Shannon Sharpe:has that ever crossed your mind? why is he not what Messi and Holland and Mbappe because once upon a time he was. He played on the wing, Unc. He was a winger. He was on the winger. Listen to me. He used to have the ball at his feet all the time where he can dictate the game and dictate the pace of the game. Why isn't the ball on his foot anymore? Because he's older and he can't move the same way he used to. That's what I wanted you to say. That's it. He can't do what those guys do now because of his age. That's it. Yeah, I know that. But you can't compare to Messi because they never played the same position.
12:22But he doesn't have the ball. Okay, did he play a position like Holland? He has to be like, oh, Holland's a striker. But you got to remember, Holland is young, unk.
12:31Shannon Sharpe:And Boppy is young, unk. That's my po - Ocho, instead of you just saying that, just say he can't do that anymore. You keep making excuses to him. He don't have the ball. He doesn't have the ball because of his age. He doesn't allow him to do it. I'm not making an excuse. You're not going to sit here and say he can't do it. But obviously, if you put him in position like those other players that put in position, he'll be able to do it. Why aren't they putting him in position if this is the World Cup? Hey, I got something for you. I got something for you right now. Let's say your best year in Denver, right?
13:00Yes. Take your best year in Denver. Yes. And they put another player in your position and they feed him the ball. And he do the same thing you're doing. No, he can't do that. Does that mean you can't do it no more? No.
13:11Shannon Sharpe:Or you're not getting the same opportunity as everybody else? I couldn't, in 2002 and 2003, I couldn't do what I did in 96 and 97. I wasn't fit to fool them folks. And instead of you just saying, if Ronaldo can't do right now what he once could, you keep saying, well, why don't they put him in position? Because this is the World Cup. I know. I didn't say put him in position because they can't put him in position. He's playing the only position he can play at his age right now. The one that best suits him. See, that wasn't so hard, wasn't it? Hey, hey, he got to play the nine. I'm just being honest with you.
13:43Hey, hey, hey, hey.
13:45Chad Johnson:That's all Joe and I want to hear you say. We know that's Ochoa Manns. We know he's going to bag his Manns now. He got AA. Hey, come on, man. Come on. Listen, I have a great understanding of the game, and at his age, he can't do what he used to do. I know that, but I'm just saying, the midfield that he does have, it's so good, and if they were a little bit more aggressive in their attacking, I think he would have more chances. That's all I'm saying.
14:09Shannon Sharpe:I think, you know, and the thing is, like you said, that sports is a young man's game. It is, bro. Eventually you age out of it. No matter how well intended, how sharp your mind is, that mind and that body, those muscles need to fight.
14:23Chad Johnson:Come on, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh. Don't, don't, don't, don't tell me that. You know, I'm, hey, hey, hey, hey, I'm about self-preservation, you know, I'm trying to preserve myself. Don't tell anybody I can't. Listen, I may be a step slower than what I used to be, okay? All right? Yeah. Why are you a step slower? I mean, obviously age, but I got things that, but listen, but listen, but listen. The reason why we say age is because we just don't have the energy that we used to have when we were 20, 25, 30 years old. Meaning we go work out every damn day. We won't take a day off.
14:55Chad Johnson:Now, hell, hey, we trying to find a reason to work out.
14:59Shannon Sharpe:Work out too hard, I might have to take two days off. Well, you better get on these Mars, man. I got these morals being tapped because the problem is as we start to age, the workouts that we used to do, it don't do the same for us. Yeah. It just doesn't. And that was the thing. I'm like, okay, I used to go in there and be like, damn, man, I can't even do this no more. It takes you more. But see, that's how you grow. That's how you get bigger. That's how you get stronger is because you're able to do the workout. And guess what? You go right back and do it again tomorrow. And you go right back and do it again tomorrow.
15:33Shannon Sharpe:and you do it again tomorrow, is that when you take that time off, that's why athletes at a very, very high level, that's why they say training is the most important thing. They don't take any time off. Because take one day off, it takes you two days to get back. You take three days off, it takes you a week to get back. You take a week off, it takes you two, three weeks to get back. So you can't take that kind of time off. That's what age does to you. The mind is willing. The body is saying, help me.
16:02Chad Johnson:The thing is, hell, we take time off training, but we still eating the same. That's why you still see a lot of these cats swole up you know, as we age and they not as active. Yeah, you gotta push away from that table a little bit too now. Hey boy, hey. I sure wish I swole up.
16:18Shannon Sharpe:If you don't work out the same, you can't eat the same. And a lot of times you gotta work out harder and eat less, but sometimes you gotta do - I don't know, as you age. Sometimes people are like, okay, I'm going to work out harder so I can do what I want.
16:33Chad Johnson:But as you age, Ocho, y 'all know hell because y 'all still work out at y 'all age. Man, listen, it's harder as you age. Hell, it's harder. Like to really have a nice fit, toned body. When you're up in your 40s and you see that, bro, hey, man, that man doing something different. I'm just keeping 100. I'm just keeping 100. Hey, thank you, Joe. I'm just keeping 100. Yeah, I'm going to keep it 100, bro. I appreciate that. Hey, I'm glad you noticed my hard work. Hey, it is hard work. And those who have physiques like that - Wait till y 'all hit 50. I can't wait till y 'all hit 50. Y 'all think that's low now.
17:09Chad Johnson:Hey, what are my yogis in the chat, man?
17:12Shannon Sharpe:Hey, we yogis for life, baby. Hey, we been, but we ain't gonna never break. That's a different type of body, Joe, because your body, you never really want to have too much muscle because you need to shoot the ball. The difference is that me, I mean, I look sick. I look, man, sharp. Man, sharp. Walk around this thing like patient zero. Yeah. I gotta have some oomph to my muscle, huh? No, hey, I wanted, my baby's watching right now. She's at her birthday dinner. Sade, I'm gonna wish you a happy birthday. I love you. I came, I couldn't stay. Obviously I had to come work with Amma Joe. Who's this?
Read the full transcript
17:47Sade, it's her birthday. She's watching right now.
17:49Shannon Sharpe:Happy birthday, Sade. Yeah, yeah. How old is she? How old is she, Terrell, Ocho? 2023. Hey, happy birthday, Sade. Hey, hey, hey. Oh, I still had to give us something. They drinking up a storm right now. All right. That's it. I just want to do that. Okay. Hey, you got grown-ass kids. What? You ain't on. Yeah, yeah, yeah. All my kids grown. Yeah, 23. Also, my kids, I mean, Joe, my kids in their 30s. I got 28. I got 28 years old now. Hey, hey. My kids in their 30s. I got grandkids.
18:22Chad Johnson:I'm right behind you. Hey, I'm out here with these damn adolescents. 19, 12. Come on, man.
18:30Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, I got started at a young age. I got started at a young age. But, yeah, that's the thing. Look, and as you get older, you start to slow, and you can't work out with the same intensity or the duration. Yes. Or you'll break your body down. And then the last thing you want to do as you start to age is get injured. That's the worst feeling in the world is to get injured.
18:54Chad Johnson:Well, the problem is.
18:55Shannon Sharpe:Because you're like, nah, that makes you don't even want to work out.
18:58Chad Johnson:The problem is, Ocho, you got people who take six months to a year off and then they jump back in the gym going full throttle. Hell yeah, you're going to hurt something. You better ease your way into that, man. You can't just jump out there going full throttle because you see your homegirl or your homeboy up here doing CrossFit damn workouts and you think you're going to try and do that. You're going to hurt yourself. That's how it's going to happen.
19:20Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. Yeah, you got to go real easy. You need much doing that crossfit.
19:25Chad Johnson:You might want to start with some swimming. Get in the hot tub. Go get in the pool. Swimming laps. I'm going to keep it real.
19:32Shannon Sharpe:Oh, yeah, for sure. But that's the thing. And I tell people, they're like, man, I said, well, when was the last time that you worked out, man? I ain't worked out in years. But you won't do this weight off in a month.
19:42Chad Johnson:Ain't going to happen.
19:43Shannon Sharpe:Give yourself the same amount of time that you put this weight on. Give yourself the same amount of time to take it off. I don't know why you think that you can take a year off, two years off, do little or nothing, and then come back in two months and be, man, what happened?
20:01Shannon Sharpe:You know what happened? And you still need to say it. And that's the biggest thing we have with our athletes is that you work – when you're playing football and you're running like – and training like we're training guys, man, I could eat whatever. I could eat a whole damn cow. It wouldn't gain no weight. now it plus is different it's a different mentality what i have now because i set my alarm to get up and work out in the morning man my alarm go off
20:30hey hey i i i i don't i don't know what i don't know why i don't enjoy i probably i would love to try i haven't hit that that that point yet who is that barking that teddy fan oh yeah i haven't hit that point yet where where the body is deteriorated i'm still i'm still consistent when it comes to working out. But Joe, I can't get as big as I want to, Joe. That shit's so frustrating, man.
20:53Chad Johnson:Man, just stay a little wiry strong. Man, you got people. That's what I tried to tell him. He not built the big B. Listen, there's people out here trying to put their life on the line and lose some weight. You hear me? Yeah, I know, Joe. I just want to fill out my clothes the right way, Joe. That's all, man. No, you're going to be a fan. You're going to be a fan. Hey, hey, hey. You're going to have to keep ordering them extra smalls you're wearing over there just to make yourself look big. I understand it. It's okay. Nah, Joe, I wear a large. Now, Joe, I can fill out a large real good, man. I'm just saying I want to fill out an extra large.
21:24Shannon Sharpe:Now, you buy a good meat. You buy a good... The only thing large I can get in two is a fry. Just the only thing large I can... Hey, hey. Ain't no large. Yeah. It's X or XX depending on who made it.
21:38Chad Johnson:Yeah. Ocho, he won't have them problems. It's okay, Ocho. No. I'm trying, man. I'm trying. hey at some point listen at some point you know they say as you get older you know you start to put weight on you know i don't know when it's gonna start for me but i'm waiting
21:55Shannon Sharpe:spain co-spot austria behind michael or ola zabel uh spain made it look easy old oscar 3-0 uh jason kidd out there setting up ola ola zabel uh twice including the perfectly weighted pass in the 36 minutes and late 89 minutes to finish the game off. Pedro Poto had a goal in the second half to help seal the win. Ocho, is Spain the team to beat? Spain is one of them. Spain is one of them. It's going to be Spain. I'm talking about the top dogs, especially with the way they're playing. Spain is so good in all three phases of the game. Obviously, inside the 18, Joe, that would be inside the box. Like for basketball, the low block in the paint.
22:36So when they in there, they get that ball to moving around. especially with with lemenya mall and his creativity and his vision and being able to see the game he does they're really good joe you know and spain is exciting and what we saw today and what we've seen from spain every game outside of the first one that they played this is what i'm expecting from portugal this is what i'm expecting playing against teams that inferior i'm not saying croatius inferior but i'm just saying as we get further into the tournament you need to show up and you to look like this when you're playing in teams you mean austria yeah yeah spain played austria and they dominated i'm saying this is what i want portugal to look like i want to look like the way
23:15Shannon Sharpe:spain look look against austria when they were when portugal was playing croatia bingo that's that's that's what i want that's what i want but in spain that they spain is nice joe they spain spain is nice and i mean when you say dominated they dominated 2.80 expected goal versus 0.32 64 % of the possessions won 10 shots on goal 3 big chances created 5 accurate passes 91 % 570 53 duels won the versus 30 fouls committed Spain only had 8 fouls committed Austria had 15 and Austria had 6 saves unfortunately they needed 9
24:01Thanos
24:05Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, but they were in control of this game. At no point in time did I think Austria was going to win this game. At no point in time during this match did I think they were going to win, Ocho. No, not a chance. I mean, before the game even started, I mean, you know, Joe, I could have told you it would have been a tough time for Austria in general, but I like when a team like Spain doesn't play down to the opponent. We're not going to play down to the opponent that we have, which is one of the issues that some of the better teams, like Portugal, I'm going to keep saying them purposely because that's who I want to actually win the World Cup.
24:34They play down to the competition. Spain coming out. They putting their neck. Damn, I can't see. You think Portugal going to make it there for an Ojo? Spain for the end of them on Monday. And listen, you're going to see the difference, Joe. When they play Spain, they don't have no choice but to get it together. You don't have no choice. Or they're going to embarrass you. Hey, look. One game, partner. Oh, yeah. whatever team you do with that one day.
25:04Shannon Sharpe:No, I just don't know. Obviously, you know, it gets even more painful the further you go, and that's as far as you go. Because you're like, man, we was two matches away from the World Cup final. We was one match away from the World Cup final. It gets more painful. So just imagine once you get to the World Cup final and you lose. Can you imagine what Mbappe felt last time, the French team felt? Having to wait another four years. Hey, hey, hey. And that's what the Olympics, that's why it's so hard. This thing comes around every four years. Most sports, hey, every year we get an opportunity, Super Bowl, World Series, the NBA Finals, whatever the case may be, the Stanley Cup.
25:51Yeah.
25:51Shannon Sharpe:I got to wait four years. A lot of times you done aged out. I might be in my prime don't get it done and then the next time when the next series come around I'm raised out you know what it's so funny Mbappe won his World Cup in 2018 at 19 years old damn yes he already got one so the monkey's off his back already so anything after that is a plus
26:17Chad Johnson:it gives you the same excitement that you get when you watch the NCAA tournament or the NFL playoffs because it's just that one game. So you got to think about it, though. It ain't really just that one game because if you continue to advance, man, you got to play at such a high level. You got to be on your P's and Q's every game. That's the hard part, being consistent, trying to duplicate great play, play after play. That's hard, bro. Yeah.
26:46Shannon Sharpe:It is. And the thing is, you say he won it at 19, and Pele won it at 17. They won it back to back. But see, here's the thing. now we know who Mbappe is. Now, your prodigy, he didn't really have the same level of expectations as a 19-year-old as he does now as a 26, 27-year-old. So now you feel it, the weight. You see guys, you see people have success. Think about all these swimmers, and we see these young trackers, these young swimmers, mainly swimming. They win in gold medal at 15. And then all of a sudden, poof, gone. that's why you appreciate what Michael Phelps did you appreciate what Katie Ledecky because not only did they win as teenage prodigies here they are keeping that thing going now I'm 20, now I'm 24 and I'm still doing it and then some guys come on the scene and have that one great create that great moment like we said and then boom
27:41Chad Johnson:it takes a lot of discipline to do that like to do it as a youngster and then as an adult that's tough that's challenges
27:53Shannon Sharpe:and to have that same hunger I mean think about it any great Tom Brady had the same desire at 23 that he had at 45 but he just realized my damn body and he said I can still play I don't know how many hits he want to take that's the thing because your body don't recover the same when you get older don't let nobody change the body Yeah, they don't.
28:19Chad Johnson:They don't. They don't. But I think Tom had a, you know, up in age, he had a different point of view. Like he had different things to kind of fuel him, whether it was leaving under Belichick's wing, you know, and wanting to win a title without Belichick. I thought that he really took that to heart, and he set out to do that.
28:37Shannon Sharpe:Yes. But the thing is, and I said this the other night, you never outgrow your draft status. Because what they say about Tom, he was a sixth-round draft pick. He won all those Super Bowls. All those MVPs, what did they say? He was sixth round draft pick. Nikola Jokic, he won those MVPs. Many people consider him, what did they say? Second round, yeah. He was second round draft pick. Mm-hmm. So you never, if you're a number one overall pick and you don't have success, that was your draft pick. Because now, if you go 13 and you don't have success, that's not the same as going number one overall and not having success.
29:16Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. So you'll never be able to out, no matter what you do, they're going to refer back to it. Tom Brady is a sixth-round pick. What did they say? Shannon Sharp was a seventh-round pick and made it to the Hall of Fame. Well, damn, I didn't make it to the Hall of Fame because it was a seventh-round pick. I was pretty damn good. Damn. They just didn't say, you know what? We got to reach a quota, so we got to have so many seventh-round picks in the Hall. It don't work like that. Damn. All right, guys. As Jalen Brown took the twitch to address the trade, Philly, Boston, and anonymous sources, we have all four soundbites so we can provide context because we like to provide context.
29:55Shannon Sharpe:Here's Jalen Brown on Brad Stevens and Boston. Message was received. I wasn't thrilled with the amount of respect that was showed during this process. You know, I think there was a bit of a lack of respect. I think it was fine at one point. And then out of nowhere, things just kind of went left. You know, I think Brad is probably getting a lot of the criticism. I wasn't thrilled the way he facilitated some of the conversations, but I definitely think there's more to it. Chat, there's definitely more to it. I just wish that the more to it could have been explained to me. Because if the more to it was explained, I think I would have understood.
30:39I thought I earned respect enough to get that explanation. but hey, obviously I was wrong. Hey, but that's life. We move on. One thing I wish in this whole process, you know, and it's good to get it out the way so we can move forward. I wish that my integrity and character haven't been attacked so much during this whole process.
31:13Shannon Sharpe:here's jalen brown on anonymous sources i could stand up for myself which i've been doing you know i feel like that's a narrative that people have been using for a long time to try to attack me and my character i could rebuttal but what i really want to say to this is we got to stop with the anonymous We gotta stop with the anonymous sources chat Like I'm tired of these damn anonymous sources He's like anonymous executive, anonymous source Colin Coward, Bobby Marks, Stephen A. Smith Anonymous sources are saying anything I think y 'all are the sources And if not, y 'all shouldn't even say it If it's something that's this ridiculous But we gotta stop Like at one point is I mean, this is a part of the reason why I started streaming in the first place Because they use anonymous sources to hide behind how they actually feel or to hide behind things that could be controversial or to hide behind things that are You know our examples of bigotry So this is an example of one but this is not the first time Stephen A.
32:15Smith Said the same thing a couple years ago. He was like, it's not me It's this is our anonymous source and Bobby Mark said the same is not me This is my anonymous source. Colin Cowher said the same thing is not me it's my anonymous source, but they don't see how much damage that can do. And now I got to answer questions to like my character and being a child. This is my life. Keep it basketball. Nobody has a problem. People think I have a problem with people critiquing my performance. Critique my performance all you want. But the line gets crossed and then they want to act like the line doesn't get crossed.
32:52The line is being crossed here.
32:57Shannon Sharpe:All right, let's take, before we go any further, let's take the first one where he says, with the Brad Stevens situation, he thought he had earned and played well enough to get a respect and be offered an explanation. I got a simple explanation. They were not going to play two guys to the end of their contracts,$300 million a piece. They value Jason Tatum more than they value you. Joe, it's really that simple.
33:22Chad Johnson:It is.
33:23Shannon Sharpe:It's really that simple, Ocho, because guess what? if you got two guys that's making$300 million on a contract and they're one year apart and they both play well, what are they expecting in their next contract? $400 million. So you want me to have$800 million tied up in two guys? It was never going to happen. Yeah. The fact of the matter is that the Boston Celtics always viewed Jason Tatum more favorable. They felt that he was the better player. And like he said, and we're going to get to this, Jason Tatum is right here. Jason Tatum color between the lines.
34:01Shannon Sharpe:Jalen Brown.
34:04Chad Johnson:Hey, listen.
34:06Shannon Sharpe:Hey, I told you. Go ahead, Joey.
34:09Chad Johnson:Man, hey, listen. I love JB, bro. Like I was once his teammate, Ocho, for a very, very short period of time. I did a 10-day with Boston. This was the last part of my career. And I got to know JB pretty well. I think he articulates himself very well. You know what I mean? I think he's a hell of a player and I wish him nothing but luck and the best in Philly. But this is why I asked y 'all the other day, I'm like, man, they're going to have a problem with guys podcasting. Because now we get to hear everything that's going on with inside of Boston and how they really feel about JB. But we get to feel his thoughts to where his point of view to where he can kind of relay it to us or convey it to us in a way to where we can kind of understand.
34:59Chad Johnson:Man, this man ain't crazy, bro. You know, he understands, you know, the talent that he has. And, man, he's very articulate when he's on this stream and people really pay attention. Hey, he making a difference, bro. He making a difference. I think it's going to be hard, though, to continue to let guys, everybody have a voice like this. Well, you have to understand also, Uncle Joe, certain players can have a voice you got to be that boy to be able to do what jaylen brown is doing you can't just be anybody and not showing up on the court on sunday monday and whatever you play and then and then have something to say on a goddamn podcast honestly you really don't have nothing to talk about and because jaylen brown is so good and the fact that he has a voice and they can't control the narrative they don't like that you know what we don't like this we have a player that is really good that get paid a lot of money and we can't control him we can't control him so it's not a safe space for them that makes them uncomfortable the boston celtics that's why they're choosing jt instead of jb because he's the safe he's he's safer we're much more comfortable having him on our team as opposed to jay jaylen brown because we can't control him He doesn't play by the game.
36:16He don't play by the rules.
36:18Shannon Sharpe:Even if I believe, even if JB colored between the lines, and I'm not saying that he's egregious. He hasn't broken any laws. He's a very thoughtful brother. They're not going to pay two guys$300 million,$400 million on the same team. They're just not.
36:40Chad Johnson:You just don't expect for them to give them away for peanuts, though. yeah but hold on and also if you're not gonna pay if you're not gonna pay doodoo to do 300 300 300 million right huh yes now is not the time to break it up now not now you don't do it now
36:57Shannon Sharpe:if you notice think about this and you said this joe about the podcast the more he talked the more intent boston wasn't getting up off it think about it the last month you started hearing and more and more and more and more. Before, it was little whispers. You know, Jalen Brown might be. But as he talked more and more, more and more started coming out on the other side, didn't it? They were trying to send him a message, but he didn't receive it. Oh, no, he's very intelligent. He just didn't give a damn. He received it very well. He didn't care. He didn't see boom boom. Yeah. Now, in order to do this, if you're going to do this, like Muhammad Ali said.
37:40Shannon Sharpe:And I think I said it to you, Joe, when Muhammad Ali was talking about, hey, yeah, I can make a couple of million dollars and keep my mouth shut like somebody else, but there are a million more people. He said it ain't just about making money. It's about using my influence. Yes.
37:55Chad Johnson:Yeah. For those that don't have a voice.
37:58Shannon Sharpe:But you have to be willing to say, you know what? I already know what comes along. Oh, you got to take the book. there's a great chance that I'm not going to get the advertising and marketing dollars that someone, even in a lesser situation, that's not as good as I am, you have to be okay with that. You have to be okay. We'll say, you know what? Yeah, yeah, you won them cry freedom brothers. We can't bring you to the Olympics. We're not going to let you do 1968 over us. What you calling what? Cry freedom. but yo i'm just i'm listen i'm telling you how they're thinking yes they're not gonna let they don't want first of all what do you always hear them say don't use that platform don't use that platform because you got a mega horn yes that is when you got when you are professional athlete do you and they know so does the individual so when you use that platform it's like nah nah nah hell nah and Joe it's really it's not just the platform right because every athlete has a platform but which athletes are using said platform or it's how you're using
39:14Chad Johnson:what you're saying on
39:15Shannon Sharpe:when you got the NBA platform you got that NFL platform that's a whole different level of platform Hold on, but it also depends on who's doing the talking because a lot of people say something and they're going one ear and out the other. But if Jalen Brown saying something, oh, you're getting the attention of everybody. Yes. Yes. And that's what, you remember? Do you remember when people started taking the knee? They're like, you can do that. When people sing in the National Anthem, what do they got the camera doing? They pan it down, see who got that. Because then it started, let's see who's kneeling.
39:51Shannon Sharpe:Let's see who has their hand over their heart. Let's see who have their helmet to the side. So now it went away. Ain't nobody thinking about the national anthem. I'm trying to see who kneeling. Oh, they go Ocho kneeling. Okay, TJ kneeling. Ah, man. Okay. But you gotta realize this started when, when, when, when, uh, Yeah. Yeah.
40:11Chad Johnson:When he was at Denver, he was in Denver. The Hooper.
40:14Shannon Sharpe:The Hooper. Yes. Hey, he, he nice. And he, hey, boy, it changed. His career was never the same. And he was phenomenal. Wait, what happened? What happened, Unc? He was, hey, you talking about Kyrie with handles and get off that shot? Boy, y 'all better go pull up some YouTube footage. My mood, I do.
40:34Chad Johnson:LSU, SEC, baby. I thought he got hurt. Hey, Ocho, he playing, hey, hold up, hold up. Ocho, y 'all know when I first joined the big three in 2019. Yeah, he was playing the big three. Still giving guys work at 50, bro. yeah he had the great beard and all that joke man that joke quicker than the cat on the marble
40:53Shannon Sharpe:table joe hey everything you see kyrie i'm talking about that that's how that ta-ta ta-ta-ta-ta and get a shot up go back and watch him how he gave that work to the bulls go back and watch some of
41:04Chad Johnson:he was one of the best scores ever come through the sec bro at lsu no no no lie he was he was
41:10Shannon Sharpe:phenomenal he was phenomenal how in hell him and shaq didn't do with do more than with him stanley
41:15Chad Johnson:big stand man you know when you young like that you need some polishing you ain't they ain't had no season they were too bland yeah the anonymous sources and i get what jalen's saying
41:28Shannon Sharpe:but he doesn't know the kind of trouble the world would be in without anonymous sources because you found that that nicotine was addictive through an anonymous source you found out about watergate through an anonymous source you found out about the iran contra through anonymous source You found out about the Tuskegee study, what they were doing to those black men, injecting them and giving them placebos and seeing the fact that syphilis caused on them. It was an anonymous source. So you got to be careful because you can't pick and choose. I want this anonymous source, but I don't want that anonymous source.
42:04Shannon Sharpe:So you have to be careful. And I know a lot of times anonymous sources, they're not really saying anything positive. because I can assure you if it was an anonymous source and they say JB is one of the top five players, do you think he'd have a problem with that, Joe? No, sir. You see? So you have to be careful. And Jalen is smart enough to know with his extensive studies, he knows anonymous sources have in place. That's the system of checks and balances that you have to have because somebody, when people go left, somebody have to be willing to go right and get out bits and pieces of information.
42:43Shannon Sharpe:So you have to be really, really careful with saying anonymous source, anonymous source. And the funny thing about it... Oh, Joe, what do you say? Because I know you don't like anonymous sources either. Go ahead. I mean, I don't like anonymous sources. I would love for people to say things and say it with your chest and say it like you mean it most of the time. But anytime there's an anonymous source, it's always true to it. Every story comes from somewhere. And the whole point is they want to remain anonymous because if those that said the Stephen A's and the people that are analysts and the punters, if they tell who the source is, then they'll never be able to get information again.
43:18That's how they get it out. They get it out to those talking heads that are on TV so it can be said. That's how you start to trigger the fact. They can't say it. Yes, they can't say it. There's always truth to it every time. Yes, but
43:34Shannon Sharpe:don't get mad at the source. it's hard for me to imagine that somebody and look, he's a very intelligent brother and just because he's well educated, he's well informed, he's well versed, I mean, what am I supposed to do? I'm supposed to dumb myself down to make you feel better about yourself? I'm who I am. I did, and we have a way of doing that. Sometimes, Ocho, and Joe we know this sometimes we would do less than what we should because we don't want to make somebody else feel bad about what we worked out absolutely i've done it man i can't get this man they're gonna thank me they don't they're gonna think i'm trying to show i'm trying to show somebody up i'm devaluing myself what my hard-earned work has done so no jalen brown should never dumb down himself dumb down his opinion to make somebody else feel good about themselves right because that's what they're mad about because they feel inferior how you mean to tell me he no more than me maybe on certain things he does and that irks some people because they you know they got a a perception of how you what you should say what you should sound like because it used to be cold Boy, you're really articulate.
44:58Shannon Sharpe:What'd that mean? Have you ever heard one of them say that to another one of them? No. That's what they reserve for us. Articulate. Okay. Sure. We'll take that. Stop.
45:16But it's a situation where I think the way it transpired,
45:22Shannon Sharpe:because of who he is, the success that what he's had, His name has come up every single year, especially over the last four to five, three to four years, extensively in the offseason. And when it looks like somebody like, hey, you can have Jalen Brown in the pick. You can have Jalen Brown, blah, blah, blah, so forth and so on. And he's like, well, damn, what do I got to do to take my pot off the stove? Because it seems like my pot is always on the stove and it's always boiling. Why me? Why can't I get Ojo, why can't I get to the side and be coolin'? I know how to get your pot off the stove. How's that?
46:02You gotta play their game.
46:05Chad Johnson:Well, that's the game. Play their game. Hey, shut up and dribble. They'll take your pot off the stove. Well, now he ain't willing to do that, Ojo. No, he ain't gonna do that. No, he ain't gonna do that. I'm glad he's not. I'm glad he's not. I'm glad that he chooses not to conform to the way they think he should be. I want him to continue to be authentically who Jalen Brown is. Be who you are. Always. Understand what comes with that. Hey, I like it.
46:31Shannon Sharpe:You have to be willing to accept the consequences that comes along with that.
46:39Shannon Sharpe:And I've been very – look, I love JB, but I understand how this thing works. It ain't no tip to it. I'm for anonymous sources. I'm for anonymous sources. good, bad, or indifferent, because they serve their place in society. Nobody has ever been upset with an anonymous source when they say you was about to get$200 million or you're one of the best five players in the league. Nobody's ever said that. Or when they say anonymous sources say, you know, this is the next five people going into the Basketball Hall of Fame or the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Nobody says, I wish these anonymous sources. Who are these anonymous sources?
47:18Shannon Sharpe:Nobody says that. stop cherry picking we've all had anonymous sources say things I have anonymous sources say the Broncos are not going to be willing to shine shining sharp due to his age and his injury history hell I know where it came from what was I going to do but they weren't the only team last I checked they print a lot of money come on now hello had it hello you have to understand see people like get me if you actually have consequences
47:58Shannon Sharpe:i tell you what go on your job and constantly complain about your boss your job and give you the respect and let's see how long you work there y 'all make it seem like oh i can do whatever you You don't. You don't. You don't talk to your boss any kind of way. You don't. Let me take that back. You don't talk to your boss any kind of way if you have a job and you're not your boss. Now, if you're your boss, hell, you can talk to yourself any kind of damn way. But you're not going to go on these people's job. There's a certain level, and I don't think JB did that. I disagree. Hold on. Let's go to the next one.
48:36Shannon Sharpe:Here's JB said the world doesn't like how authentic he is. Go ahead. Take a listen to that. You know what I mean? And I think the world right now, you know, obviously you can use me as an example, is not comfortable with the level of authenticity that someone may bring. And I wasn't comfortable myself when I first started. Like, listen, I'm not a streamer, bro. Like, I stream, but this wasn't me. This was never me. people in Boston. I don't even like talking to people in general, let alone talking to 27 ,000 people. So I started doing this because, you know, the industry, the narratives and everything that people try to make up and you see them now coming out and getting exposed.
49:18But I did this as a way to like storytell, tell your own stories and show up and let people know who you are and what you got going on. I love it. I love it. Cut the middle man out, Joe. Yes. Cut the middle man out you linear television media talking pundits analysts you're not going to be able to control the narrative on how the public and the masses are going to perceive me I get to control it now so no matter what you say and if I don't agree with it now I have my own platform and my own voice and my own audience to the bug whatever it is that you say before you go any further
49:56Shannon Sharpe:I want you to I want you to stop rewind seven seconds and then press press press play stop, rewind seven seconds. You said I have my own media platform. Yes. I have my own safe. Yes. Now ESPN has a platform. They got 25 people. So who you think is going to win? Even if, think about it, that's how news organizations work. Oh, I like that. They can pump out information, even though you, who you think the people are going to believe? How many people you think go believe what he says versus what now i know they're going to be people that like look like us but the masses who you think they're going to believe when people turn on fox news who you think they believe but but i got a question go ahead i got to understand for you for those that for those that enjoy the game of basketball that for those that actually watch yes this is this is this is far and few we never see someone like this be able to go at the machine right going at the machine yeah i'm telling you i'm telling you i don't okay this is what the machine says yes you know what you hit it from the horse's mouth it ain't true and to be able to
51:08Chad Johnson:to be able to go at the machine okay ocho you got to be doing your damn thing you hear me yes because i i'm saying it's good it's a lot of cats out here who gonna who all will have a voice but man if you ain't out here jb averaging 29 a game bro how the hell i'm averaging 29 a game 30 mvp voting and my name still in all these damn conversations are getting traded. Something ain't right, bro. Vitals MVP and Eastern Conference MVP. Make it make sense for me. Maybe there's something that Boston just didn't want to deal with, bro. Because when you think about what they gave up for him, yeah, when I talk about a swap, yeah, he's having 29 PGs, averaging 17.
51:52Chad Johnson:But bro, the headache that they feel like they're going to have to deal with, they don't want to deal with that. They said they don't want to deal with it Uncle Ocho.
52:02Shannon Sharpe:I'm a prime example. I left Fox. They said one thing. I didn't say anything. People believed it. Even if I came out and said this is what happened X, Y, and Z, people are gonna believe there gotta be some truth to it somewhere. Same thing with CBS. Everybody said he got let go because of this. No. I talk to them things like Shannon we just don't think two tight ends on the set of work okay but everybody tried to make it something else okay fine what I've learned is that people are going to believe what they're going to believe and there ain't no change in their mind are you looking at what's going on in today's people say we lost money with the Trump coin people say and they're blaming Democrats because they ain't buy the coin and they shorted it so people gonna believe what they want to believe so why am I gonna waste my time now maybe if you there are things you want to get off your chest I could have said a lot there are there are only a handful of people that really really know the truth about what transpired at Fox and what transpired at CBS and none of this is what they put out but you know what hey clean my thing out said a Wardrobe, Autumn, Tracy Peace out Jumpsuit, Brett Hey, Brina Peace out, everybody Her and my girl sent Eddie Hey, just you move on You can't When people want to That's what I hate You never heard anything When Shannon Sharp was at Fox It wasn't until I left Then all of a sudden that start leaking out.
53:52Shannon Sharpe:You never heard none of this about JB when he was there. Nobody said they used the term, you know, thought he was the smartest guy in the room. But what that means, they thought he was uppity. You know he thought he was uppity. One of them. You didn't hear that. You didn't hear nothing about his teammates. His teammates couldn't tell him nothing. Seemed like to me he got along with everybody. That's just me. I'm not in the locker room. But why didn't we hear some of this about him not getting along with teammates before they traded him? Joe, why would he hear about he was the smartest guy in the room before?
54:25Shannon Sharpe:You knew he had outside interests? Listen, everybody, it's okay if he has other things, but it's hard for me to believe that he didn't give you everything that he could while he was on the clock. Go ahead, Ocho. Joe, what did I say was going to come out after you got traded last night on the show? Watch all the negative stuff like they did with Miles Garrett. All of a sudden, stuff's coming out. Yes. I knew it was going to happen. I knew it was going to happen.
54:54Chad Johnson:That's wild, bro.
54:56Shannon Sharpe:That's what I don't get, man. I'm saying, look, we could, Joe, we talked about this. We've all been in relationships to end. Nobody heard me say nothing bad about ending my exes. Because I didn't say that when I was with them. They didn't say that when they were with me. So now all of a sudden we go our separate ways and you got all this bad stuff to say. I get it. sometimes people when emotion is high logic is really really low you want to make me look bad I left because of this I left because of that well you should have left a lot earlier if I've been doing this the whole time why the hell you stay 10 years why the hell you stay 7 years if I was such an asshole if I was a jerk didn't do anything didn't take any vacations now all of a sudden you leave Oh, I just, that's how I am.
55:49Shannon Sharpe:Everybody, my mistake again, thinking how I am, that's our other mistake. No, sir. That's your biggest mistake. That's the biggest mistake.
56:01Chad Johnson:Especially when, hey, hey, hey. When you live and learn. That's your biggest mistake, especially when you a giver, bro. When you a giver and they know you a giver, bro. Like. Hey, I learned my lesson. We all have, Ocho. I learned my lesson on the joke. I learned my lesson about being a giver. And people start, they take advantage of you. They take advantage of you. But you gotta cut that off quick, boy.
56:24Shannon Sharpe:Gotta put limits on what you give cause takers will never put limits on what they take.
56:27Chad Johnson:Man, I'm talking about boy, you said a mouthful of that boy. Damn.
56:32Shannon Sharpe:You can't. And you Joe, hey, you win some, you lose some, you move on. Yes, sir. I don't, look, you wanna trade, it's your right. to do this. But
56:49Shannon Sharpe:I don't think any fans gonna stop coming to the game. Like when players request a trade, oh, you ain't no loyal. Teams, owners have convinced their fan base that loyalty is a one-way street and it's okay. We're the only ones that need to be loyal. Excuse me, the players need to be loyal. We don't need to be. so if a player asks for a trade you see and fans gobble it up every time how? I'm trying to figure out how can a billionaire convince an average fan that the millionaires are more selfish than them and they bought it
57:32Shannon Sharpe:they bought it and they're still buying it
57:43I just
57:46Shannon Sharpe:man James like I said as a matter of fact y 'all know what happened was it last year yeah last year around the 4th I went to this place got some barbecue big old dude man bald head yeah man kept looking at me I'm like well man I was like you know I'm like chilling you know I'm like you know I feel him look I'm looking you know We make eye contact because if I, and that's why I kind of, if I'm in the airport, I don't really make eye contact. I have my headphones on. I'm trying to get to point 80 point B. Me and Jordan, we're in a hurry. But he kept looking at me. And after a while, he came. He came and like, you know who I am?
58:27Shannon Sharpe:I'm like, nah. Should I know? He said, I'm Jalen Brown's dad. I said, oh, okay. What's up, man? How you doing?
58:40Shannon Sharpe:he was like, man, they'd be talking crazy about my son. I said, what you mean? He's like, man, they'd be, you know, he's always in trade discussion. They always say it X, Y, and Z. And he's nothing like that. I didn't know because I've never heard Jalen. Obviously, we know he has a dad. But I've never heard him mention or say anything about it. So I didn't know if he was telling the truth or not. But then when I look at him, I'm like, yeah, you Jalen Brown there, are you close for him? Are you something? You his brother or uncle or something? Because y 'all damn what y 'all look like. He just got a beard, got a bald head.
59:19Shannon Sharpe:And I think Jalen got low hair now.
59:22Chad Johnson:Yeah, God cut his hair. Yeah, God cut it. Yeah.
59:31Shannon Sharpe:but no it's I just this is and now I've seen they used to call them locker room lawyers they do all they can to get them up out of there and the thing that was so hard about they can't do this because he's such a great player if he was speaking like this and he was averaging 50
59:59Chad Johnson:That's what helps him, though, Unc. The fact that he is such a great player, a top-ten player in this league right now, that helps him more than anything. Hey, listen. Right. For me, I look forward to him going to Philly, bro, and putting that ball in the hell out. Yeah, not only ball in the hell out, but putting that battery pack in Joel Embiid, bro. I feel like you got to respect somebody like that, Uncle Ocho. He come to your team. JB come to your team. You see how hard he works. Obviously, he speaks what's on his mind. Bro, you gotta respect that, man. You gonna have to get to work. A lot gonna be expected.
1:00:35Hey, listen, and don't let...
1:00:37Chad Johnson:I ain't gonna even see it. I ain't gonna see it. I ain't gonna even see it. Hey, Joe, don't hide it, Joe. Let us know what you're thinking, Joe. Let us know what you're thinking, man. They may not be done. Damn it, if I'm a free agent... Oh, yo, you tried to talk about the king. You tried to talk about the king. I'm just saying, Ocho, when you look around the league, especially Eastern Conference, bro, there are a few teams that you add that man to it, boy, they're going to be a top three team in the Eastern Conference for sure. Hey, listen to me now, Joe. Ocho, I say it's a few teams. I ain't take y 'all out.
1:01:16Chad Johnson:I'm just keeping it 100. I'm just saying. I'm just saying you got Jalen Brown on the ball. You got Tyrese Max on the ball. You got goddamn Embiid down there, clogging the paint. LeBron ain't going there, man. Just cut that out. I thought your ball knowledge was supposed to be on par. It's not on par with me right now. All right. Hey. LeBron gets to dictate and control the pace of games, having the ball in his hands at Miami, and it's a better situation no matter what. Sending them out to the West and sending them out there to that. You don't want to be 42 years old playing against anybody in the goddamn West.
1:01:53I want to see them boys in the finals.
1:01:54Chad Johnson:I told you, listen, it's a few teams in the Eastern Conference that looks very enticing. Name one. Name another one, Joe. Outside of Philly, outside of the Heat, outside of the Cavs. What do you mean? It's a few teams. The Cavs? That's the crib, Coach O. That's the crib. He not going back there again. Now he ain't finna double. I already blessed y 'all on the go back. I ain't finna bless you for a third time. Come on, Joe.
1:02:26Shannon Sharpe:But you know what's amazing, guys? I thought ever since we booked that trend of just dumb jocks, I thought they would like that. The NBA and fans and people would love, because for the longest time we were just dumb jocks.
1:02:40Chad Johnson:Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
1:02:43Shannon Sharpe:Now we educated. Now we have ideas. We run businesses, and we do all that stuff now. Now it's a problem.
1:02:51Chad Johnson:You know why it's a problem? because hey it could it cut all the bs out you know what i mean because it cut all the bs out bro yeah we can speak for our damn self man hey they don't like that no hell no they don't hey we can't get oh lord now they got a voice oh lord now they got a pin oh now we can't top all that he got all his damn talent. Damn, what we gonna do? Now we can't control him.
1:03:21Shannon Sharpe:Because what they do is they say, we gonna give you X, give you a house in a gated community, give you as many cars as you like, and so maybe you will turn a blind eye to what's going on in the next place. Well, now he talking.
1:03:34Chad Johnson:Because you say - Now he talking. Now he talking. Now he talking.
1:03:41Shannon Sharpe:That is what they do.
