In short
Sports talk covering NFL preseason and team outlooks (Sauce Gardner’s DPOY confidence, Bears over Titans, Colts QB situation), plus college football results (Bill Belichick “swerve” media moment, UNC vs TCU, South Carolina State vs Savannah State 87-0, USC vs San Jose State, Florida A&M win), with a brief UFC mention.
Guest backgrounds
Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson (former Pro Bowl/All-Pro NFL receiver; route-runner), Joe Johnson (former NBA All-Star, “Mr. Clutch”), and co-host “Unk” (Liberty City legend; described as a former Pro Bowler/All-Pro in the intro).
Key claims
Sauce Gardner wants Defensive Player of the Year and says he’s aiming for All-Pro/Pro Bowl while helping the Jets reach the Super Bowl; confidence and a needed early interception are framed as important for his critics. Bears are “poised” for a deep playoff run; preseason value is finding reliable backups. Belichick’s sideline/media avoidance is portrayed as “sticking to his guns” and not adapting to modern players. A blowout (87-0) is treated as evidence of Savannah State’s mismatch/roster gap.
Notable examples
Jets vs Lions interception drought ending (Dec 15, 2024 vs Jags); Bears 24-15 Titans; UNC 15-10 TCU; South Carolina State 87-0 Savannah State; Florida A&M coach Quinn Gray’s first win.

The Lions defeated the Colt the last time Sauce Gardner had an interception was December 15th, 2024, against the Jags. Well, the drought is over. Sauce got a pick today and spoke afterwards about having Defensive Player of the Year in his sights. What are the expectations you have of yourself? Man, just obviously all pro, pro bowl. Shoot, I'm trying to make a run at Defensive Player of the Year.
7:17Shannon Sharpe:You know what I'm saying? It's bigger than everything. things. But, you know, my main thing is being the best player I could be to, you know, help the team get to, you know, the postseason. You know, we want to get to the Super Bowl. So, you know, that's what it's all about, man. Individual accolades, they're going to come. Love it. Set them high. Your goal should shock the conscience, not just of you, but everybody listening and that can hear you. Let them know, man, cornerbacks don't win the defensive player of the year. I know Pat Sertan run it a couple of years ago, but there haven't been very many corners over the course of history that have won that award.
7:51Shannon Sharpe:Normally, that award goes to D linemen and linebackers, guys that can rush the quarterback, put pressure on the quarterback. That means you had an exemplary year. As a defensive back, and you win that award, your Pat Sertanes, your Deion Sanderson, Deion Sanders, your Rod Woodson, your Charles Woodson, guys of that nature, Mel Blunt. If I'm not mistaken, I think Lester Hayes, he also won that award. so you'll be in a very very elite company if you were to stefan gilmore if you were to win that award so i don't have a problem with what he said guys i definitely don't have a problem with it
8:24Joe Johnson:obviously you want to set your goals extremely high you know there's a lot of talk about sauce and him not looking like the corner that he once was when he was a rookie he played he had a phenomenal rookie season and they they kind of say he's tailed off a little bit uh outside of that he would bring up stats and he would argue with everybody and anybody when it comes to him not really missing a beat when it comes to playing a defensive back position but for him setting your goals as high as he has for one one of the things i always think about when you play joe obviously when you played as well how easy can you make how easy can you make your coaching job your coach not having to worry about you listen i can run more exotic coverages i can do more defensively because i know i don't have to worry about sauce i can leave him over there on the island and he can handle his business he can travel he can do whatever we need him to do to make our job easier and obviously your personal goals and setting those high as you can.
9:13Joe Johnson:And even if you fall short, falling short, it will still be good. It will still be good. So I like it. Sauce has confidence. I think for him, he has to have that confidence. Having a pick, even though it's preseason, having a pick for someone like him who gets a lot of flack for getting beat sometimes, he needs that pick because once that confidence sets back in and he gets a plan and he catches that rhythm in season, he's going to be all right.
9:39Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. Yeah. I like Sauce. I like what he did today. I love his confidence, Uncle Ocho. Him saying he wanted to come out and be defensive player of the year. That means he has high expectations for himself, and now he just got to go out and show and prove. He looked good today. Yeah. I think that's the biggest thing. Obviously, he's like, look, I want to get this team in the playoffs. I want to make a postseason run. At the end of the day, a lot of that's going to be contingent on how well he plays. He understands. When you trade what you traded to get him, you expect him to have an immediate impact.
10:11Shannon Sharpe:You expect him to play extremely, extremely well, week in and week out, down in and down out. That's what you expect from a guy that you gave up two first rounders to get. And especially after the Jets gave him that big contract. So I don't have a problem with what Saul said. He understands the task that he's going to probably have to follow the best receiver. And, you know, his job is to make sure he doesn't do what he normally does. If he does that, the Colts have a great chance of winning. You know, if they get bucked back healthy, I like them. Because I think offensively, they got to, you know, with Taylor running the football and those weapons on the outside, if Daniel Jones can be what he was last year.
10:53Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, absolutely. They got a great chance, guys. They got a really good chance. Now, that's a tough division now because Jacksonville and the Houston, Texas aren't slouches. So that's not an easy division that you think you could just cakewalk through. and who knows Tennessee might pop their head up every once in a while and rise to the occasion defensively I don't know how good they're going to be offensive but normally Tennessee Titans defense solid yeah pretty formidable yeah I'm excited I'm excited I can't I can't believe we
11:22Joe Johnson:talking about football but football season is the point I joke we got Anthony Richardson had
11:27Shannon Sharpe:Anthony Richardson had his best preseason to date guys seven to ten eighty yards is this enough to keep him on the team Ocho or did he do enough to say so show someone else man we might should
11:39Joe Johnson:trade you know what I still think he's a project huh I think he's still a project is another team is another team willing to take him on is another team willing to take him on or are the Colts saying listen we understand that it was a project we were impatient we went and got Daniel Jones but we're gonna keep him here to kind of continue developing him I mean it depends I'm not sure how they're thinking upstairs uh daniel jones obviously obviously getting hurt i'm not sure who the number two is i'm not sure if if anthony richardson is number two but if he is probably robin leonard that that that's tough i i say i would keep me me honestly i would keep him i would keep him even though riley is number two if that's who they're gonna go with with anthony richardson continuously showing flashes of what he can do i would keep him around i'm just being honest
12:28Shannon Sharpe:hey hey i'm with you ocho i think he's always been a project you know he's very inexperienced when it comes to playing college football i think you know they took a gamble on him bro you know what i mean and now you know with him getting a chance to kind of sit back and watch i think sometimes that's kind of the best situation to be in i mean but today okay ocho you think about it yeah that was a good lasting impression to put on the last you know preseason game just It's a show, it's a glimpse of like, okay, cool. Maybe if we put him on ice a little bit, keep developing him, then he'll get his opportunity again.
13:00Shannon Sharpe:Maybe he'll flourish. So I wouldn't say give up on him, man. Still give a young man an opportunity because the tools that he possess, I mean, they hard to come by at that quarterback position, but the physical tools that he has.
13:12Joe Johnson:The physical tools that he does have, Unc, you can't teach those. You can't teach those. But once he gets the mental part of it, because you gotta remember, Unc, a joke, This game is 90 % mental, especially at the quarterback position. Once he get it right upstairs, boy, all hell will break loose, boy.
13:29Shannon Sharpe:But you know the thing is about you want those physical tools for any other position.
13:34Joe Johnson:Quarterback, yes, sir.
13:35Shannon Sharpe:Because he's never going to have to use them. You know what I'm saying? A guy can stand in a broad jump a left foot. When does the quarterback, what's he going to do? You going to put him on the one-yard line and hand him the ball and let him jump over the top?
13:45Joe Johnson:You right.
13:47Shannon Sharpe:wide receiver you want that a tight end a DB a DN a linebacker something like that you like the physical gifts that he has you just can't teach those but as a quarterback the most of the quarterback are the least physically gifted guys on the field absolutely we've seen those guys walk around with their shirt off in the locker room yeah and I'm like lord you can't play nothing but quarterback that's the only position you could have played that's the only the position that you've ever played. Ah. You know, on the football field. Now, you know, obviously they might have played basketball or baseball or some other sport, but I'm looking at these jokers and like, ooh, concave shoulder, chest, and kind of hunched over and stomach.
14:29Yeah.
14:30Shannon Sharpe:Hey, tell me something though. Tell me something. With Detroit having Gibbs back there, and you look at, what's that, Sayers and Williams who ran the ball well today? Yes, yes. Would they keep all three of those guys or would they probably keep one? because remember now they got rid of Montgomery. He's in Houston. Houston. Yes. So obviously that's what Campbell wanted to see. He wants to be a physical football team. He wants to be able to run the football then play action pass off of that. Yeah, I can see both of those guys played really well. 17 for a buck? Yeah, you get 100 yards on 17 carries.
15:12Shannon Sharpe:The other guy had nine. So he's averaging six yards a carry. Oh, yeah. Yeah, he ain't going nowhere. Good numbers. Good numbers. Yeah. Hey, Detroit got a mob, boy. You talking about skill positions at the receiver spots, the running back, man.
15:28Joe Johnson:And defense too now. Hey, Brian Branch is coming back. He healthy now, right?
15:34Shannon Sharpe:He should be. The thing is, Ocho, is keeping the guys healthy. Their problem is, you know, you got Jack Campbell and you got McNeil and you got a lot of those guys. You got Hutchinson. You got a lot of those guys. Muhammad. You got a lot of those guys. The key for Detroit is not whether or not they play well. It's that are they healthy enough. Because remember two years ago, Ocho, they damn near lost everybody on the defense. Even the backups were getting hurt. So they was down to Joe. They was down to their third and fourth guys. If they can stay healthy, they're going to make a run. That is an extremely, extremely tough division.
16:07Shannon Sharpe:You look at them. You got Chicago. You got Green Bay and we think Green Bay is good. We think Chicago is going to be good. We only think Caleb Williams is only going to get better.
16:16Joe Johnson:Absolutely.
16:17Shannon Sharpe:Defensive, they get some guys back healthy. Jalen Johnson for one, who's been a Pro Bowl player. He's healthy.
16:25Joe Johnson:Yeah, I think I'm not sure. I'm not sure what the status is on Kirby Joseph as well. Safety Kirby Joseph, he nice too. They got a nice little squad, especially if they can stay healthy. We know what they can do offensively, but defensively, they not no slouches now.
16:44Shannon Sharpe:No. Yeah. The biggest thing is just staying healthy. If they can stay healthy, I like their chances. The Bears defeat the Titans 24-15. Will Leavitts 14-22. A buck 43. Tyson. You know when people try on new food and suddenly it's like, Wait. That's the reaction a lot of people are having when they first try Kewpie mayo. It's the one with the red cap and the little baby on the bottle. You've probably seen it in the grocery store before. And if you've ever just walked past it, some people would say that's a huge mistake.
17:51Because this mayo is different. Most mayonnaise uses whole eggs. Kewpie only uses egg yolks, which gives it this rich umami flavor. It's smoother, deeper, and almost buttery. Once people try it, they start putting it on everything. Egg sandwiches, fries, burgers. Some fans even swear by dipping pizza crust in it. And once you notice it, you start seeing it everywhere. Chefs use it. Restaurants use it. People who really care about flavor use it. Never tried it? Grab the bottle with the red cap next time you're at the store. Put it on just about anything. Then you'll understand. QP, the original Japanese mayonnaise.

20:30Shannon Sharpe:16 to 17, 208, two touchdowns. Xavion Thomas had a big day, five for a buck, 40. Damn, Joe. Go Joe. What's up, Unc? Go ahead, go ahead. No, I'm going to say, what's going on? You guys putting up big numbers like this in the preseason?
20:45Joe Johnson:Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, Unc. Hey, hey, they call him Zoom, Unc. I think he from LSU, the receiver? Yes, Unc. Yes, Unc. He had a stutter go on. And he. Oh, yeah. Yeah, I saw. He attacked. Listen, the smart. Very smart. He attacked that blind side where the corner couldn't see. And the corner just. He hesitated a little bit, Joe. Boy. Right. Boy. Man, he caught that. He caught that ball.
21:13Shannon Sharpe:And put them. Put the book on. He was making the team anyway.
21:16Joe Johnson:Because he was a third round pick. He was making the team anyway. But boy. Yeah. With that creativity Ben Johnson has. and the way they're probably going to use him this season, I wouldn't be surprised because of his speed if Ben Johnson using it in a way, the same way the Dolphins use Tyreek Hill. Obviously, you know, Roma, Roma, Doomsday, and Luther Byrd are going to be the showcase and getting the most of the opportunities. But, boy, he could take the top off of defense, boy. Yeah.
21:43Shannon Sharpe:Hey, bro. That's that wide receiver you over there at LSU. Y 'all know how they get down. huh hey hey hey the plays that young man was making today them the type of plays that can earn a rookie you know real snaps when the season when the season start yeah you know we just keep it in 100 like hey man that's a hell of a weapon and special teams yo he would cut no he would cut up on kick return and punt return yeah yeah and remember he still got ray ray mccloud over there now oh really so he's another yeah ray ray's over in chicago so he's another guy that can return. The more you can do, the more valuable you make yourself.
22:25Shannon Sharpe:16 or 17, you've got to love that. Case Keenum was 7 or 13. Case Keenum is a solid. He started a lot of different places. Got Minnesota to the championship game. They ended up losing to Philly the year they went. Ended up beating the Patriots in the Super Bowl in Minnesota. Went to the Broncos. Didn't have quite the success that he had other places, but he's a solid guy. obviously we know Caleb Williams is going to be the starting quarterback but it's always nice to have a quality backup behind him that if your guy misses a week or two you feel very comfortable going into there running your game playing and coming out of there with wins Will Leavitt's had a good showing 14-22 143 yards Hendon Hooker
23:08Joe Johnson:Hendon Old Tennessee balls
23:16Joe Johnson:What's that?
23:17Shannon Sharpe:It's just Will Levis. I mean, I don't know how he gets an opportunity unless Cam Ward just falls flat on his face. How is he going to get an opportunity to show what he can do? Because had he been doing what he was supposed to do, Cam Ward wouldn't be on the team.
23:34Joe Johnson:Right.
23:39Shannon Sharpe:And Tyson.
23:40Joe Johnson:He look good.
23:42Shannon Sharpe:He look good. Man, listen. 16 for 17. Hey, you willing dealing out there.
23:49Joe Johnson:Hey, Joe, I ain't talking about no little dink and dunk passes. Man, he letting that thing fly.
23:57Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, I think if you look at the big picture, like preseason isn't more about the record. It's about finding guys who you can trust if the starters go down. And if you look at it, I think Chicago found a few of them tonight, if we just keeping it real. Like when I see – when I'm watching them boys, I'm like, shh, hey. I get it. Preseason, probably third, fourth screen guys. But, hell, we got to put something on tape now. You right about that, Joe. Yeah, got to put something on tape. You right about that. And the Bears, look, the Bears, they're poised. They're like, look, we went to the divisional round last year, but we're not satisfied with that.
24:35Shannon Sharpe:We think we have the type of a roster that can make a very deep playoff run. And, you know, you get greedy. Hey, you get into the playoffs, don't you? Who would you say, man, hey, you win one game, why can't we win two? We win three games, why can't we win three? We win three games, why can't we win it all? Hey, that's the way you have to think. Get greedy. Don't just get complacent, oh, we're in the playoffs. Nah, that ain't enough. Because you got to the playoffs last year, and you're supposed to improve upon what you did last year. Because last year has no bearing on this year. Everybody starts at the bottom again.
25:10Shannon Sharpe:but you should have a level of confidence that, you know, considering what we did last year and we think we're better, that we think this roster is better. We think our quarterback is going to be better. We think this defense is going to be better. With that being said, there's nothing to do but to go out there and do it. Right. Nothing to do it. Right.
25:35Shannon Sharpe:Bill Belichick, second season of the college football coach, got off to a great start. The Tar Heels beat TCU 15-10, starting the college football season 1-0. However, things still haven't changed about Belichick. Check out him swerving the ESPN reporter. Take a look at this, guys.
26:01Hey.
26:02Shannon Sharpe:Man, y 'all do like Coach Hill. Hey, hey, hey, hey, that's a joke.
26:05Joe Johnson:Boy, Bill hasn't changed. He hasn't changed yet. He hasn't changed yet.
26:08Shannon Sharpe:No. He ain't going to change.
26:10Joe Johnson:He's stuck in his ways. He conducts himself a certain way. When he actually has to deal with the media, he'll deal with them. But catching Bill coming off the field and thinking he's going to sit there and talk to you, now you know good and well that wasn't happening. You know good and well that wasn't happening. He got his first win today. I'm happy for him. They got TCU up out of there. It's a good thing. I think it's still going to be up.
26:32Shannon Sharpe:Hold on. That was a real game. That was the first game. They were just in the island. They played overseas. Yeah, that's a real game. That's a real deal.
26:40Joe Johnson:Damn. I'm happy for him. I'm happy for him.
26:45Shannon Sharpe:I don't look. Y 'all know how. It's a part of your job to talk to the media. And I know ESPN has kind of beat him up. ESPN has kind of beat him up. His college football, you know, his son is out, took a leave. Lombardi, his general manager, is close confidant. You know, had some issues going on. and i don't agree with it i don't agree with him but i i didn't i never like when pop did that everybody thought it was cute cute pop would basically give one word answers and and and all that it was all it was all fun as you're winning they're the same they're the same they're the same guys yeah yeah when have y 'all known coach belichick to stand on the sideline i mean coming up the field and give these long drawn out insightful interviews that ain't who never has been.
27:37Shannon Sharpe:And I get it. Coach, I just, you know, you ain't finna change now. Hell, you 70-something years old. You ain't finna change for me. So, but I don't agree with this. Yeah. Nobody really wants to talk. Well, as I said before, let's go. It came as team's general manager and defensive coordinator is on leave. Belichick called it. Because guess what? His son is the defensive coordinator. Coach Belichick had to call the plays today for the first time since 2019. Now, the expectations. He got paid a lot of money. Look, for whatever reasons, and I've heard some things and I don't know if they're true or not, but for whatever reasons the NFL didn't call, you would have thought a guy with that kind of resume, that credentialed.
28:27Shannon Sharpe:Ocho, what are we making? I mean, look at John Harbaugh. John Harbaugh got fired one day, and today they had a damn job with the New York Giants. With one Super Bowl. Absolutely.
28:37Joe Johnson:But also, I think it's a coaching style too. I think it's a coaching style. I don't think his coaching style would resonate with today's players. I don't think it would resonate. The same as Mr. Coughlin. If Mr. Coughlin was in today's game, their coaching style, it just wouldn't resonate. Who used to coach Los Angeles Rams a long time ago? St. Louis Rams. What's his name? No, no, no, no.
29:04Joe Johnson:Oh, Mike Fisher. Jeff Fisher's coaching style. Hell, his style didn't work back then. It just wouldn't work with their style of coaching. I don't think players would respond to that extremely well, which I think with the younger generation, I think that's why if you look at most of the coaches throughout the NFL and look at the landscape outside of Harbaugh, it's more younger coaches.
29:25Shannon Sharpe:They're getting younger and younger.
29:27Joe Johnson:They're getting coaches in their thuddies. that the players can actually relate to and understand. That old school style, that militant style of coaching, yeah, I don't think it would go over very well, especially with this generation that is very, very not insecure. What's the word I'm looking for? When you say something about them, they – God, not insecure. When you say something, they get – sensitive, sensitive. That's the word I'm looking for. They're real sensitive, Joe. That's their GMC? They're real sensitive, man, especially when you critique them.
29:58Shannon Sharpe:they they sensitive hey that's my thing it's like damn if you in college bro it's hard to police these cancer get on them or give them any constructive criticism without them taking it personal and thinking that you beating them down you know what i mean because ocho oh i ain't got to listen to none of this you talking about nothing i can go hop in this portal i could be i could be playing all they want is praise though that's it all they they all they want is pass on the back no kick in the butt so you either tell me you either tell me i'm doing good when i'm doing bad and when i'm doing bad don't say nothing or i got to go now the choice is yours either you gonna praise me when i'm doing bad and when i'm really doing bad don't say anything pretend like you didn't see it please that didn't work i'm out no it's not but because the real ocho at some point in time, we always say sports is a microcosm of society.
30:53Shannon Sharpe:Because we're asking a lot of different guys from a lot of different bad guys to come together for a common goal. That's what they ask you to do on a job. When you're not doing well, what you think that boss is going to say? See, in the real world, the boss don't give a damn if you go because somebody waited to replace you because somebody wanted that job.
31:10Joe Johnson:Same thing in the NFL too now.
31:13Shannon Sharpe:See, that's why the NFL is different than college. Because see, college you go transfer to somebody else and get a moment hey you start listening stop listening to coaches if you want to but i don't know i i look if i play good say i play good if i play bad i play bad but also if i play good say i believe you could play better and let me show you areas i believe you could have played better in i'm
31:37Joe Johnson:that type of guy right but but look you're that type of guy it's very it's very important it's very imperative imperative that the coaches in today's era whether it's college or the nfl understand you got to understand your players you got to know how to coach certain players you got to know how to critique certain players some of them you can't coach them all the same joe some of them you could be stern i like i like i like my coaches to be stern i like you when you would cuss me out and i mess up i like that i i welcome that now other players they shut down joe they
32:08Shannon Sharpe:shut down right hey but hey and and you gotta look at some of these college kids bro who parents are really banking on them you know what i mean them parents put that battery in their back you know because think about it if he if the coach can't get on you here you know and your parents ain't telling you the real you know man you got to just put in put in extra work you know you you got to be better then they they kind of invite that type of uh attitude bro and it don't help it don't help the kid none whatsoever no you know my thing was guys any pray anytime somebody told me i did something good, I'm going to do.
32:44Shannon Sharpe:Because that's not how we didn't get that. If we did something good, that's what Barney Porter would tell you. That's what you're supposed to do. Are you supposed to do wrong? I told you we do something. He's like, anything is better than nothing. But y 'all two fellas, y 'all real close to nothing. I had never heard it and I hadn't heard it since. But so anytime somebody told me something, but I've always been one of those guys because I know how he was. He was a type of guy, if you did something, he had always felt you could have done it better. So that was my – so even when I did something good, I was always, okay, could I have done it better?
33:22Shannon Sharpe:Like, no, son, son. If we had to give you a grade that's an A +, that's 100. I was like, are you sure? What about this? They said, man, look, hey, don't beat yourself up. You're not going to be perfect, but you were damn close to perfect. Hey, that's that old school. I'm telling you, Ocho, man, Nolan Richardson, bro. I do not remember him giving us, you know, admiring us, giving us words of, I don't remember none of words of encouragement, but boy, when it was bad, he let us know it was bad. Oh, my God. Yeah, so it wasn't too much admiration in there. Like, I'm being honest with you. I don't really remember a whole lot of it.
34:03Shannon Sharpe:I just remember a lot of tough love, a lot of grit, grind, and hard damn work. That's all I remember, bro. And that's what his, that's what, that's what Papa was, Joe. You know, Joe. If you did the right thing, he say, son, why should I reward you for doing the right thing? That's what you're supposed to do. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. If you did the wrong thing, I'm going to get on your, I'm going to get on your ass. But, but I'm like, well, you know, you could say good job. But you did what you were supposed to do. I'm not finna give you no kudos for doing what you're supposed to do. It's like, oh, he was a good parent.
34:38Shannon Sharpe:You're supposed to be a good parent. You don't get no extra credit for being no good parent. That's what you're supposed to be. Hello. Man, you know I ain't never been to jail before. You ain't supposed to go. You know what I'm saying? People be speaking to me like, well, they ain't been to jail. So they're like, well, man, you know a place I ain't never been? Hell, I think you talking about, hey, the Maldives, Bali. Man, I ain't never been to jail, bro. You ain't supposed to go. That ain't no place that you don't, hey, that ain't no passport stamp. Yeah. But, yeah, you're right, guys. These young guys, it's a different time now.
35:17Shannon Sharpe:It's a different mentality. This is why I can't coach because it's hard because I was raised like that. I was coached like that. And so for all of a sudden, and I see how I turned out. We won at every level. We didn't win a state championship. We didn't go to the Division II playoffs, but we won for that level. I won at the highest level you can win at I won so I know that style of coaching works but everybody can't get coached like that
35:46Joe Johnson:you gotta adapt you gotta evolve I'm glad you just said that too about adapting and evolving one of the reasons why also I think Bill probably didn't get an opportunity in the NFL because they understood he wouldn't adapt he wasn't changing he was sticking to his guns he was going to always be who he is which is exactly who he is in North Carolina yep
36:10Shannon Sharpe:he people believe some of those things that I've been told is that how could he be how good could he be without Tom it didn't help his case is that when Tom left yeah he went to the playoffs but then the next year it was it was god awful and in every year Tom was there they were they were no less than the third favorite to win the Super Bowl Yeah. So just imagine that. And it's like, well, you know, how well can he relate to the young players? How well? You're talking about somebody in the center. You look at the guys. The guys keep young. You look at the guys. They keep getting young and younger.
36:47Shannon Sharpe:Young and younger. Now, yeah, they recycled a few coaches. Mike McCarthy got recycled. John Harbaugh, he's only up in age. But you look at Mike LaFleur. Hell, he's in his 30s. When he hired Sean McVay, hell, he was in his 30s. Kyle Shanahan might have been in his 30s, early 40s. That seems to be the trend and the direction that they're kind of heading, guys, because they're looking at these older guys like, man, y 'all out of touch. Y 'all don't listen to the music they listen to. Y 'all don't know the lingo. Hey, they got the coaches now. They talking about quiet on the creek.
37:24Joe Johnson:What the hell you know about quiet on the creek?
37:25Shannon Sharpe:Hold on.
37:26Joe Johnson:I saw that. What that mean? Where that's from? You know what that mean, Joe?
37:34Joe Johnson:I don't know what it means.
37:35Shannon Sharpe:I've heard it though. I don't know what it means. What's that movie? I Know What You Did Last Summer? Yeah. Okay. Keep everything on the hood, JoJo. Hey, listen. I think it helps when you have head coaches who are very relatable to these players. because they'll play and they'll work hard for you, bro. Y 'all know that. These young guys, listen, they may be a little damn sensitive, but, boy, if they got a coach they can relate to and they know got their back, they'll work hard for them. So these old school coaches, y 'all right. It's probably about time to kind of move them on out the way, man, because these young dudes, bro, they want somebody who a little more hip, who a little more in tune with what's going on.
38:24Shannon Sharpe:You know what I mean? Yeah. But you know what you need? that old school of work, but you need your best player to buy in. He got to be the hardest worker. The thing that helped Coach Belichick is that his best player bought in, jumped on it with both feet. That's Tom Brady. Once Tom buys in, what other choice do you have? Gotta follow the line. So that's what you gotta have. Your best player needs to be your hardest worker and he needs to buy in. Because if he buys in, everybody else will follow. But if he don't buy in, good luck convincing the rest of the crew. You're absolutely right because it's almost like some follow the leader.
39:07Shannon Sharpe:Like if he disrespects what coach says, everybody else is going to be on that same type of time. So you're right. You know, it definitely is a pecking order when it comes to this run. When your best player is the hardest work on your team and coach can get on him without him frowning up, catching the attitude, The rest of them dudes, man, y 'all better get in line, boy.
39:28Joe Johnson:Remember what I told you, what Bill did the first day when I got there? When they, in that meeting room with Tom?
39:35Shannon Sharpe:What did he do, Ocho?
39:36Joe Johnson:Man, they put on that film when they lost to the Jets in the playoffs. Yeah. From the previous year? To start the new season, they put on why they went home. When the Jets beat him, man, he laid in the time, man, laid in the time in front of everybody. and it's cardinal rule number one coaches you never chastise your starting quarterback in front of everybody else everything is done behind closed doors watching film what he did in front of the whole team that set the tone that set the tone right there letting everybody know this is the type of time they own and everybody it's an even plan hey hold on
40:12Shannon Sharpe:hold on y 'all say it's a cardinal rule you ain't supposed to get on the coach in front of you i mean you're supposed to get on the quarterback for everybody no not not that level no quarterback There are certain levels of quarterback you cuss his ass out. But Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, John Elway, Marino, those type of guys, absolutely. As a coach, no, sir. No. You can't say nothing to him. What if I'm a new guy just got on the team? I know Tom done won three already, but then my first year with New England, I don't know how things work. You learn very quickly. You barely speak to it.
40:44Joe Johnson:Hey, Joe, you going to know.
40:46Shannon Sharpe:What? You barely speak to it. that's who uh uh what was the guy the bit when the best player because it was a situation man we had we always had room check at 11 o 'clock on during the during um during uh football season so somebody with someone of the coaches would come check so i'm in my room you know i'm going to bed because i got it early i'm getting up at seven o 'clock taking a shower because by the time i get up take a shower walk to the cafeteria eat get to my class it's eight o 'clock i'm walking I'm walking up, I got five minutes, bull jive with the fellas a little bit, I'm going into my class.
41:25Shannon Sharpe:Man, coach come banging on the door, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. Everybody out, everybody outside. So I'm already mad. Anybody that knows me know I don't like to be woken up. So I'm already on some bull jive type of time. And you know, my five milligrams of don't F with me has already worn off. You know, I take every morning, I take five milligrams of don't F with you. Right, right, right. It had them worn off. So we out there looking around and everybody looking at me. Sharp, what's wrong? What's going on, Sharp? I'm like, man, I don't know. So he asked, where's the guy at? Now, mind you, the guy don't even start.
42:02Shannon Sharpe:He don't even play. Yeah. Where is he at? If somebody don't tell me where he at, I'm going to run y 'all until y 'all tell me. I started thinking. I said, Coach, I don't know where you're at. And I got class in the morning. I'm going back to bed. I started to walk off. Everybody said, man, Sharpe ain't running. I ain't running either. Everybody followed me. We went right back down. For real?
42:34Shannon Sharpe:Man, I wasn't running for somebody. First of all, he don't even start. Second of all, I didn't know where he was. Yeah. I didn't.
42:46Shannon Sharpe:went right on back to my room and laid down and went to sleep oh what'd you say you had class in the morning yeah I said coach I got class in the morning I said I ain't running I'm going back to bed hey ask Bucket because for the most part the team look if we wrong if we did something and coach I understood I had a lot of leeway coach Davis trusted me to the umpteenth and I would never ever put him in a bad way had Coach Davis come down there, he was going to ask me, he was going to say, damn home, where he at? I would have gave him up if I knew. I ain't going to lie. You don't start. And you're talking about I'm going to run for somebody that don't even start.
43:24Shannon Sharpe:Don't even mainly play or travel. Oh, hell no. No, hell no. I ain't running. I ain't going to hold nobody. I ain't running. Now, I've run for people doing stuff. Hey, I figured that's just a part of it. I ain't running for him. That's what I would say. To make a long story short. Before we move on to the UFC game, Ocho, I heard there's a game you wanna talk about.
43:50Joe Johnson:Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey. It is a game I wanted to talk about. What, what happened? Well, with Savannah State, well they played South Carolina State. Well, what happened? What was it? What was it, 87? Well, they were playing. Hold on, we lost 87 to nothing? Hey, hey, hey. I think they were playing basketball. That must've been a basketball game.
44:13Shannon Sharpe:Hold on now. Hold on. Hold on, man. I know that ain't the surveillance state that I went to.
44:19Joe Johnson:They got the two jerseys retired. That's them. Yeah, that's them, Joe. Man. That's a basketball number. I think they was playing basketball. I don't even think they were playing football.
44:32Shannon Sharpe:Hey, you got to get the building farm right over there. Damn, y 'all got to get some players or something. You might not. I know somebody has said, when he said that Savannah State got beat 87-0, I'm thinking they played Georgia. I'm thinking they played, you know, I'm thinking they played a power five school. I'm not thinking they played South Carolina State.
44:50Joe Johnson:Yeah, yeah, yeah, you know, but listen, listen. I'll tell you one thing. This is the good thing. Not only did you lose, right, but let's be a little bit more positive. You can't go, you can't get any worse than this the rest of the season. It's only a...
45:04Shannon Sharpe:Man, I need 13 points for a bunch.
45:13Joe Johnson:It's only up from here. It ain't like next week the next team gonna score 90. So you got a good chance. I know who did win Joe. Florida A &M Rattlers. A fair one. Coach Quinn Gray is his first win as a new head coach. Congratulations coach.
45:34Shannon Sharpe:huh what we talk about Joe you know sometimes like when a score you like man if we flip the score around so like you somebody with 31 31 15 well if you flip the score around they score 13 hell I flip it around they still got 78 78 oh okay okay baby hold on this goal was 52 nothing to have the Bulldogs run for for 423 yards and seven touchdowns on 46 carries. But did they, damn. There ain't nothing you can do about it. Did they throw the ball? If a team, if a team, why would you?
46:09Joe Johnson:Hey, that's tough, that's tough.
46:12Shannon Sharpe:Damn, that's tough.
46:14Joe Johnson:Wee. You might wanna show them, get them boys a little NIL money, get some boys over there, it's tough, man.
46:20Shannon Sharpe:I'm telling you, wee. They need to get some players off of some power five schools to help that. I ain't got enough money to buy enough love to help that out. That's all right. You know when people try a new food and suddenly it's like, wait. That's the reaction a lot of people are having when they first try Kewpie mayo. It's the one with the red cap and the little baby on the bottle. You've probably seen it in the grocery store before. And if you've ever just walked past it, some people would say that's a huge mistake.
47:28Because this mayo is different.

50:02Shannon Sharpe:If I'm not mistaken, and I think the South Carolina head coach, you went to Savannah State.
50:07Joe Johnson:Oh, for real? No. He probably did that on purpose, man.
50:12Shannon Sharpe:They got a little bread, though. They probably paid y 'all a little bread. No, no, no, no, no, no. Historically black schools don't play other historically black schools. We ain't got no money. I'm saying, but then South Carolina had to pay them? No, I don't think, no. Maybe$50? Oh, man, come on, man. Come on, man. Come on. 87 to nothing?
50:35Joe Johnson:Hey, you come over here with FAMU, man, the highest of the seven hills. You come join us. Never. You sure?
50:44Shannon Sharpe:Man, man, I play NCAA college football on hell. It's hard to score 87 points, bro. I mean, the most points I ever scored in a game was 70. But we could have scored before, but Coach called the dogs off. He took us out like the top of the fourth quarter. So we definitely could have got 90. Hey, but you think about it. Game one, you feel like everybody got their juices flowing. We, you know, we ready. We feeling good. We ain't got a lot of knickknacks. And guess what, Joe?
51:11Joe Johnson:We ready. Guess who, fam, you play next, next week on the ninth? Who? Carolina State. They're going to beat the brakes off, y 'all. No, sir. We going to show you how you get it done. We going to show you how you're supposed to play them. You hear me? I tell you that. I tell you that right now.
51:27Shannon Sharpe:They get beat by at least 14, Joe.
51:29Joe Johnson:You won't. No. We rattlers over here, man. We rattlers over here.

52:11Shannon Sharpe:you ain't got no stat you didn't have 100 yards off ain't no way you had 100 yards of offense hey what would they have probably 20 yards of offense you scored you didn't score a point that's tough you think they got past midfield i doubt it not unless they threw a pick oh that's tough they had a hundred savannah state had 117 yards south carolina state had 627 i'm surprised they only had 627 i thought they had about 800
52:43Joe Johnson:that's tough man 87 when i saw the box score joe i thought i thought it was glitched you know i thought it was a glitch i was like no way it's not basketball season they're not i tapped on on my phone screen, I said, oh, that's real. Easy.
52:59Shannon Sharpe:I ain't know we got beat that bad, man. Boy, beat, that's an understatement, hell. Oh, I'll tell you one thing,
53:08Joe Johnson:come on over here on this fam, you bandwagon, man. We got a little room.
53:12Shannon Sharpe:Quarterback was fine, I'm gonna have to call, hey man, I gotta put a call into the president, like what we do. You gotta call the AD, you gotta say. No, hell no, I'm bypassing AD, I'm calling the president. 87, man, that's embarrassing.
53:30Joe Johnson:That's tough, boy.
53:33Shannon Sharpe:That's tough. Hey, hey. I'd have ran out onto the field. You know, we thought of, like, this light had been, we thought about doing the tour, starting the tour with this game.
53:45Joe Johnson:Oh, nah. You didn't want me to be there for that, boy. No, sir. It's a good thing.
53:51Shannon Sharpe:I'd have ran out there on the field. I got arrested. Y 'all had to do something, boy. If we just sat there and had to watch that, I was like, damn.
54:09Joe Johnson:Yeah. And don't worry about it. We're going to show you how to do it September 9th.
54:13Shannon Sharpe:But people always do that. To my what, bro. Y 'all make it seem like I was playing. I was playing. I could do about that. Yeah. But you got a, you got a, you got a, you got a, You gotta take that L with him though. That's your alma mater. You gotta, I know it hurt. Man, look at that Oklahoma State didn't beat us that bad. Miami didn't beat us that bad. Hey, you know what? South Carolina and the SEC, you know what it is. Man. You know what the SEC hitting on, man? You know the SEC a little different, man. A little mini NFL. No, oh Joe, Joe. This South Carolina State, they're HBCU like us. Oh, that ain't South Carolina, no.
54:47Shannon Sharpe:I thought that was South Carolina. No, that's the Bulldogs.
54:50Joe Johnson:Oh, man. Hey, Joe. Joe. Joe. I thought that wasn't a game card. Nah, nah, nah, nah, nah. That's South Carolina State. Damn. Don't worry about it. Fam, you're going to take care of that thing, no boy. Don't worry about it. Oh, yeah.
55:05Shannon Sharpe:Oh, you got to call the president for this one, boy. I got to. I got to, Joe. I got to.
55:10Joe Johnson:Damn. Hey, Joe. Remember what I told you, man. What's up? Fam, you're going to show you how it's supposed to be done, boy.
55:16Shannon Sharpe:Man, they're going to beat Fam U by 14 at least. I'm saying probably by 21, Joe.
55:21Joe Johnson:uh uh uh uh uh South Carolina got a stick but we got a stick what you talking about no y 'all don't you'll see you'll see
55:31Shannon Sharpe:yeah y 'all got a yard stick you'll see if I'm not mistaken I think South Carolina State won the black college championship last year hey yeah they got a they got a spanker now hey Hey, fam got a chance, though, because South Carolina, listen, they on a natural high right now. You know, hey, week to week, you think they're going to put up the tight performance next week? No, but they're going to bring up. Joe, when you score 52 points at a half, you feel very comfortable that you can get to 100. I mean, I think 35 points the most I've ever had is a half, 35, 37, something like that. Did you have 50 points at a half?
56:16Shannon Sharpe:I know if I'm on the opposing team, I'm trying to get to the 100. I'm telling Coach Coach, let's get 100 on them. They defense had to score some too, though. Did they defense scoring and getting picks? 423 yards of rushing. Damn. On 46 carries. They're almost averaging 10 yards a carry.
56:37Joe Johnson:Yep. Hey, Joe, we're going to show you how to do it. You hear me? September 6th.
56:42Shannon Sharpe:Okay.
56:43Joe Johnson:Orange Blossom Classic. Florida A &M South Carolina State right here in Miami and I guess we're going to be there you going? you know anytime they play here at the Classic I sit with the band Joe man listen man I'm a huge supporter of the band boy I'm talking about way back since 2000 Joe yeah damn you cheering for the Bulldogs
57:14Shannon Sharpe:I sure am
57:16Joe Johnson:this is the highest of the seven hills you hear me they gonna learn the hard way
57:24Shannon Sharpe:I'm cheering for anybody other than y 'all
57:27Joe Johnson:the first thing I'm gonna do I'm gonna start singing old time religion Joe give me that old time religion give me that you gonna wish you had some religion Oh, come on. Come on, Rattlers.
57:44Shannon Sharpe:Number 14, USC opened the season to high expectations, and they succeeded thus far, 42-26 over San Jose State. Jay Maiavea passed for 286 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another one. Trent Mosley caught seven passes for a buck 18 on a touchdown. The Trojans showcased several promising newcomers to Lincoln Riley's offense. Six of the Trojans who caught passes were making their USC debut. Caden Dixon-Wyatt also caught a touchdown in his debut. Riley Wormley and Sean Austin rushed for their first touchdowns. Joe, it seems like to me is that moving forward, you're going to see more and more transfer guys and less and less high school guys playing immediately.
58:31Shannon Sharpe:In both sports, football and basketball. Unless they're special, Joe. Yeah, I'm talking about like five-star that boy.
58:39Joe Johnson:They got to be special. Yeah.
58:41Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, because they just, they don't want 18, 17-year-olds no more. You know what I mean? Because they're too inexperienced. Unless you him, boy, it's going to be hard to play ball in college nowadays. It is. It is. What do you think, Joe? Oh, Joe, you like USC? I like them.
59:00Joe Johnson:I like them. But you have to remember, they play San Jose State. They play San Jose State, but for Lincoln Riley and his offense with all new players, They look good today, but we have to wait till they have a test. We have to wait till they have a test Later on in the season. I'm not sure what their schedule is right now But I'm gonna tell you I'm gonna tell you right now
59:18Shannon Sharpe:They got they have said I don't know if they got Notre Dame on the schedule anymore this
59:22Joe Johnson:No, they don't they don't I think that their next test they got Fresno State. Hold on Wait San Jose They got a bi-week already something right Oh 9-4 they play Fresno State on the fourth I'm not sure. I'm not sure if that would be a test. I'm not sure how good Fresno State is Uh, they got Rutgers. They got Oregon, you know, they're month of September. They got the Oregon Oregon
59:52Shannon Sharpe:They got Ohio State
59:54Joe Johnson:Penn State they got Ohio State they got Indiana Oh, yeah, oh, they got yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, they got they got some good games man They got some real good game, but this is a good start for them. You know, get your feet wet. Have some film, have some things you can study, you can correct that you might have had, mistakes you might have had in this game that you got away with because you're playing a lesser opponent, an inferior opponent. Yeah. I wonder if Fresno State is good. Hey, remember that year Fresno State was real good? I mean, really, really, really good?
1:00:28Shannon Sharpe:When they had Carr and what you call it? Oh my goodness.
1:00:35Joe Johnson:Boy, they was hell back then, boy. What? You see,
1:00:41Shannon Sharpe:Erlacher's son, Kennedy Erlacher, he played for USC now. He was at Notre Dame when he transferred.
1:00:46Joe Johnson:Linebacker too?
1:00:48Shannon Sharpe:Yeah.
1:00:52Joe Johnson:Yeah, I think USC should start 3-0 because they got Louisiana Ragin. Ragin Cajuns. they got freddo state then louisiana ruckers i'm not sure how good ruckers is they should be ruckers they should start four and oh and then they got oregon oregon should be their test
1:01:16Shannon Sharpe:hey oregon gonna keep a whip out there they gotta as long as they got that nike money they they're gonna keep a stick out there you hear me because hey hey soon you come in they're gonna show you all the shoes and helmets and uniforms you're gonna be wearing that's what's gonna get you right got you hey you get them pe you get them pe ducks oh yeah oh yeah they they ain't playing fair out there nah but hey hey they in portland here you gotta have something that's going that's going to attract these kids yeah come on now up in eugene it rain all the time like you know what i'll be laced out though hey i'ma play hey i'll play football and basketball You know them basketball be getting them kicked, Joe.
1:02:00Shannon Sharpe:Oh, man. Because, you know, that's where the Nike headquarters is, Ocho. You know what I mean? So they're going to take care of them boys out there. They're going to make sure them boys lays right. Where they at Beaverton? Yeah, in Beaverton. Yep. I remember, boy, we used to go out there. You get to go to the Nike store. I'm talking about, ain't have to spend no money. Come out of there about four, five bags. You hear me? Big bag, yeah. With them P.E., with them Ducks, man, because they're bad. They're football players. I mean, like, if you were Nike school, like, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Florida, Marquette, Georgetown, Oregon, man, they'd be having them kicks, and they'd be mad at them players.
1:02:43Shannon Sharpe:Man, them players, like, man, what I care about these kicks? Man, give me$5 ,000. Give me$7 ,000 off of these damn shoes. Yeah, yeah. As a college student who ain't, like, it wasn't no NIL back then. hell even though it is some nia i'm still selling mine seven thousand for some shoes that i'm gonna do the work to the student center man please boy seven thousand dollars to a college kid 10 15 years ago i mean it's still money right now but back then when it like you said joe you rich boy seven thousand man man hey you can have them with the quickness Florida State defeated New Mexico State 34-17.
1:03:27Shannon Sharpe:Ashton Daniels passed for 202 yards, had a passing and a rushing touchdown. After starting at Stanford for two seasons and played Auburn in the four games last fall, Daniels completed 17-27 passes in his debut for the Seminoles. He also had an interception. Florida State, which have finished with 217 yards, rush yards, on 39 carries when the season over for the fourth time in five years.
1:03:56Shannon Sharpe:What you think about Florida State? They've kind of fallen on some hard times.
1:04:01Joe Johnson:Yeah, I mean, Ashton Daniels look cool. You got to correct some of the mistakes, though. You were able to overcome the mistakes when you had two interceptions, too. Now, you overcome the mistake because you were the better team all around. You were the better team all around. With that schedule they got coming up, man, quarterback can't be making the mistakes.
1:04:20Shannon Sharpe:Before you go, Joe, we know Oregon, the University of Oregon is in Eugene, but the headquarters is in Beaverton. Corvallis is where Oregon's in. Yeah. Joe and I, we were talking about, yeah, we know Oregon is in Eugene, but go to Eugene looking for the Nike store and good luck. You'll get a footlocker. I don't even know if they still get, do they still got footlockers? because the one time they were thinking about closing foot lockers.
1:04:51Joe Johnson:Yeah, I think they still got foot lockers. Hey, Florida State. Florida State got hell in their hands off rip, huh? They got SMU next. SMU normally have a pretty good offense.
1:05:04Shannon Sharpe:They normally try to put some points on the board.
1:05:06Joe Johnson:And then they got Alabama after that.
1:05:09Shannon Sharpe:Woo! Alabama. Alabama. Hey. Alabama need to get up to a good start, boy. They're going to put some Kalen DeBoer. 10 and 3 ain't going to cut it. Not Alabama. Now, you'd have been good had you not followed Nick Saban. See, I don't want to be the man that followed the man. I want to follow the man that followed the man. So I want to be the guy that followed Kalen DeBoer. That's who I want to be. I got you. I got you. See, I didn't want to be. See, you see how they did that? I don't want to be the guy that followed Coach Belichick. Let me follow the guy that followed Coach Belichick. Hello. I want that I want that job Hell no
1:05:50Joe Johnson:Nick Saban he done set the standard now
1:05:54Shannon Sharpe:Six national championships Six And they lost Who did they lose LSU No they didn't play LSU They lost to Georgia once They lost to Clemson twice And they lost in the college football playoff to Ohio State. So he theoretically could have nine, ten of them plays.
1:06:18Joe Johnson:That wouldn't be fair. Yeah.
1:06:21Shannon Sharpe:And look at all, and the countless players that he, you know, put in the NFL. But no, they got their work cut out for him. They understand. Look, when you go to these schools, you know what the time it is, especially you following a historical coach like that. If you follow Barry Switzer, or you follow Coach Bud Wilkinson, at Oklahoma. They won 57 games straight. Yeah, it never happened again in college football. Ain't nobody winning no damn 57 games straight, Ocho. People go and Google for Gaga and what you call them, they won 35. USC won 35 straight. They needed to go undefeated for two more seasons.
1:07:00Shannon Sharpe:That's crazy. Damn. Yeah. Well, you gotta have a whip to do that, bro. Yeah.
1:07:07Joe Johnson:I think Florida State's gonna be alright, though. But it all comes down to quarterback play. How consistent can brother Ashton Daniels be? How consistent can you be week in and week out? And it's going to start next week. It's going to start next week now. You know, them big games. You're making the mistakes you made today against, you know, and I hate calling people inferior opponents, but, I mean, that is what New Mexico is. You got to be on your rocker next week. You bought a sofa you didn't have to assemble, a suit someone measured just for you, And now you're taking a guy's trip that actually matters.
