In short
The episode is a Week 1 NFL recap and debate focused on Seattle vs. New England and Minnesota’s quarterback situation. Topic: Seahawks’ 13-10 banner night win over the Patriots, driven by defense and turnovers; plus Vikings QB depth changes involving JJ McCarthy and Carson Wentz; and commentary on Baker Mayfield’s contract.
Guest backgrounds
Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson (former NFL Pro Bowler/All-Pro, Bengals WR) and “ISO Joe” Johnson (former pro; co-host; former NBA player—described as a seven-time NBA All-Star with the Atlanta Hawks).
Key claims
Seattle’s defense played well enough to win, especially after Drake May (Patriots QB) threw three interceptions. Drew Lock’s backup performance was praised as efficient and calm after Sam Darnold’s knee injury. The Patriots’ many penalties (17 combined) and Seattle’s late-game clock/timeout/“delay of game” issues are criticized as sloppy coaching/discipline. For the Vikings, Kevin O’Connell names Carson Wentz as backup and JJ McCarthy as third, calling it a week-to-week decision; hosts argue McCarthy is treated like a “project” and that the team lacks confidence in him.
Notable examples
JSN making plays despite limited targets; Mac Hollins’ interception tied to a height advantage; Patriots’ repeated third/fourth-inches quarterback-sneak tendencies; Darnold’s CT scan/inconclusive hip results; Mayfield “gets paid” (contract discussed as roughly $103M over three years).

As you watch the defending champs, the Seattle Seahawks, take down the New England Patriots, the team that they beat last year in the Super Bowl, by the score 13-10. Please, please drink responsibly and stay safe. The Seahawks beat the Patriots 13-10. Josh Joves seals the game on the interception.
7:42Shannon Sharpe:Five snaps in, Sam Darnold hurt his knee. It looked like he jammed his knee into the turf, and it probably pushed up into his hip. But that's what having a quality backup does for you because Drew Locke came in and he played extremely well. A veteran quarterback that had some starts in this league, started at Denver for a number of years, played really, really well in the backup role tonight. Drake made three interceptions. You can't win like that. I don't know. Young man, I don't know what you saw on that last one. I don't know what he saw, Ocho, but you know what? I'm going to let you and Joe get a first crack at it, and then I'm going to come in at the end.
8:21Shannon Sharpe:Ocho, what did you like about what you saw from Seattle, and how were they able to win this game after getting off to such a sloppy, sluggish start?
8:30Joe Johnson:I mean, well, obviously it was a defensive game, Uncle Joe, especially at the beginning of the game. Both defenses played extremely well on both sides of the ball. Offensively, you know, Drake May, he had three interceptions. And to answer that question on that last one, Mac Hollins, I think Mac is maybe 6 '4". he understood there was a height advantage for him in throwing that ball up, but throwing it up and fading back, you know, not really giving Matt Hawes a chance to jump for that, to make that a 50-50 ball for him to even have a chance. So that messed up. I think there was – I think one of those interceptions, one was late, and that second one were love.
9:09Joe Johnson:I think it was Robert. Was it Robert? Because he had nothing to –
9:11Shannon Sharpe:The one that got tipped on the side?
9:14Joe Johnson:Because he was throwing one and it ended up getting tipped. That was late. That ball was late. That was late. But the one in the middle of the field where Love picked it off, I think he was playing Robert. It had to be Robert because he had no threat. And he drove right on. He read Drake May's eyes the whole time. Outside of that, their defense played well. Their defense played well enough to win. If Drake May doesn't turn the ball over this many times a night, I think they have a better chance in having some scoring drives. Outside of that, Drew Locke came in for Sam Donald. He played really well.
9:51Joe Johnson:That goddamn JSN, huh?
9:52Shannon Sharpe:He's special, man.
9:53Joe Johnson:Hey, JSN, I thought he was going to be frustrated a little bit because they were struggling to get him the ball. But he made something out of nothing. He did. He made something out of nothing. And he showed why he was top two receivers in the NFL right now. It was a game. It was pretty boring, especially me in the first half. I was kind of frustrated, kind of bored, honestly. but it got interesting towards the end. Joe, I thought it was a good defensive game, Uncle Ocho.
10:23Shannon Sharpe:Look, when I watch the Patriots play, and I always talk, I always ask y 'all, you know, in the preseason, man, why these top guys don't go out there and get a little burn before you get out there? You know, because for me, it's like some of these injuries, obviously the one to Sam Darnold, you probably, you know, it is what it is. But I think rhythm and timing in football is just like any other game that you play, you know what I mean? And when you ain't been out there for them reps, Uncan Ocho, things just don't move as smoothly. But I thought Drew Locke came in, bro. And I'm sure as a backup, that's the last thing you're thinking like, damn, first game, you ain't thinking, you know what I mean?
10:57Shannon Sharpe:Five plays in, now you got to play the whole game? Hey, bro, I tipped my hat off to him, but I thought it was a great defensive game.
11:07Outside of that, Uncan Ocho, them injuries, bro.
11:11Shannon Sharpe:So, you know, like, we don't know how severe it is for Sam Donald. But, man, we talk about a game of inches and collisions that happen, bro. At any given play, it can be, you know, a career ending. You know what I mean? So, we really don't know the significance of it. But I thought it was a decent football game.
11:32Joe Johnson:Yeah. A.J. Brown got hurt, huh? You know, his ankle got pinned. Like a hot ankle sprain. Yeah, probably a high angle sprain. He should be out. I mean, he should be out maybe a week, maybe two, depending on how severe it is. But the fact that he wasn't able to come back, it has to be high. So I see him missing maybe two to three weeks, depending on how fast he recovers. But tonight is on Drake May. Tonight is on Drake May. It's impossible to win with that many turnovers. One turnover, yes. Now, even though your defense is solid, three turnovers, it just gives you no chance to even win this game.
12:13Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, it's hard to continuously overcome bad quarterback play. But at some point in time, these teams are going to have to realize, you're going to have to play these guys. You had 17 penalties combined between the two teams. Yeah. That's not an accident. That's not an accident. Seattle shot themselves. We can chalk it up because I think these are two really good defenses, but the penalties that Seattle was committing, They get a first down. Right. Get it backed up. Cooper Cup, they got two men. They got a touchdown wiped off the board, guys, because we had two men in motion. Cooper Cup has to come back to a complete set.
12:45Shannon Sharpe:Bro, you ain't in Canada. You know that. I'm just – This is baffling to me to watch this play and watch them go out there, oh, we not going to play anybody, and you get out there and you got 10 penalties. Not counting the ones they declined.
13:02Joe Johnson:That's what I'm talking about. Right. Right. But but also, you got to understand, even when we were playing, Joe, I think you can attest to this. Obviously, even in basketball, listen, as much as you practice, it's still different in the game. And sometimes you want a game like this, especially week one, to get the cobwebs out as much as you practice and want to go into it, not have any MAs, any missed assignments or have any errors or any offsides, any penalties in general. They are going to happen, but you want to minimize them. But this is good film study for both teams.
13:33Shannon Sharpe:10-8 minimization, Ocho, for Seattle State. Ocho, they had the ball second in damn inches. Yeah. Oh, my God. Call a damn timeout. You got three. Why the hell would you get a delay of the game in that situation when it's second in inches? That's the head coach. That is on the head coach. I'm saying, hurry up. Hurry up, son. Get your ass out of the huddle. If you got any motion, there's no chance you get in that playoff. You get to the damn line with nine seconds on the clock. there's absolutely zero chance if you got any motion. And they like they got a full start. The only thing to say to them is that they got a delay of the game.
14:07Shannon Sharpe:But I'm looking at the head coach. You standing on the sideline, you looking, call a timeout. That could have been the most important drive of the game. If Drake May wasn't a bonehead, I don't know. Drake May tonight, if he had brains, boy, look here. If dynamite was brain, Drake May couldn't blow his nose. I don't know what the hell he had going on tonight, Joe and Ocho, but that was some horrible playing football. another thing and I'm gonna let you turn it back over y 'all defensive end let me tell you something about when you play the New England Patriots when they get third and inches or they get fourth and inches be alert for the damn quarterback sneak they ran the exact same play in the AFC championship game every time they get in trouble they get a third and one they know that end's gonna knife it on the back side and what is he gonna do he's gonna fake it on the front side and he's gonna peel out the back side okay now you've been forewarned now somebody else get that if I'm a coach, you see this play right here, third and short, fourth and short?
15:00Shannon Sharpe:Now, if you get beat again with that, I'm going to put my foot in your ass. Yeah. Hey, hey, listen. I think for Drake May, Ocho, if he had capitalized on that last drive, that would have made up for all other mistakes. That last pick, was horrible. Hey, I'm glad I ain't got him on my damn fantasy team. That's all I'm saying. Hey, no. You may win or you may not win with it. But in this situation, if you Your quarterback, you lost today. Guess what? Will Campbell, the left tackle for the Patriots, he ain't got any better old children.
15:37Shannon Sharpe:He's good and terrible.
15:40Joe Johnson:Yeah. Yeah. Hey, listen, are you going to give anybody any grace? Especially, for one, Uncle Joe is bad at Drake May Play tonight. I know that he won't be like this the entire season. I hope not. Absolutely not. I'm going to give him some grace. You'll give some grace. Hey, Uncle Joe, I'm going to give some grace. Let me ask you a question, Joe, before you go any further.
15:59Shannon Sharpe:Which one of those? There's some 46, 46, but 92. Which one of those 92 players going to pick up a check on Monday or Tuesday next week? I don't know. Okay, dude, I ain't getting no damn grace. Or hello. Say your grace when you eat your food. When you have breakfast, lunch, and dinner, that's when you say grace. I'm not giving any grace.
16:20Joe Johnson:Yeah. Listen, I'm with you when you're right. Go ahead. Go ahead, Joe. Go ahead, Joe. Yeah. What I want to say, what I don't like about week one, week two, and obviously week three, it takes time for offenses to get themselves together, to find themselves a rhythm, to have some kind of continuity as far as the offense goes and the offense is concerned in general. They always start slow. For defenses, which is why I think the game looked the way it did tonight, defense, all you got to do, Joe, is you got to read and react. You got to read and react. And so, I mean, it was a boring game to me until it got to the very end.
16:57Joe Johnson:And I think Mike McDonald also held that timeout to make sure, depending on how the game went, he wanted to have those timeouts
17:05Shannon Sharpe:in his back pocket in case he needed to use them. He scored the touchdown there. He ain't got to worry about the timeouts. Now they need a touchdown and a two-point conversion to beat you. They need a touchdown on the P.A.T. to tie you. So I'm not worth it. I mean, what you're saving it for? You think they roll over to the next game? you don't get to accumulate timeouts. If you don't burn them in the first half, you don't get to carry them over to the second half. If you don't use your timeouts in the second half, they don't carry over to the next game. That's what I don't get with this coach.
17:31Shannon Sharpe:But I don't get this with Mike McDonald. He's too good of a coach, and this was too important of a drive for him to let that clock go down to zero, and they get a delay of the game. Now, the offensive coordinator, they're going to have to do a better job of getting the play in a little earlier. Yeah, man. But you can't have, Ocho, and it's a good thing this is the first game. We can overcome this. But you know late in the season, these are the type of games that keep your ass out of the playoffs. These are the type of games that's got to be in the first or second seed, have your ass a third, and you have to start on the road in the playoffs if you're fortunate enough to get in.
18:04Shannon Sharpe:You just got to minimize the mistakes. And I'm looking like, bro, how you get this many penalties? I mean, guys are just like, I'm like, oh, my goodness. And that's what they got, Mike McDonald. I don't know. Here are Blitz. They're a Blitz. I mean, New England. What do y 'all think he's going to run? What do you think he's coming with? He's another one. If he's getting in trouble, he's coming with pressure. He believes it. He believes his back end can cover. And he loves bringing Spoon. Spoon, I've never seen. The only guy that I've seen Blitz as much as Spoon was probably Charles Woodson. After they went to Green Blade, Ocho, you remember they moved him to safety?
18:42Shannon Sharpe:And he would play the slot. Yeah. I ain't never seen a lot. Rondé, they would blitz Rondé, but not like this.
Read the full transcript
18:49Joe Johnson:Yeah, it was a lot. And you know what the funny thing about it, too, is when you think about how many times Seattle did blitz, the counter that New England had, they answered it most of the time. Most of the time they had the counter.
19:03Shannon Sharpe:They got the ball out fast. And guess what? I know you got to get the ball out fast, so guess what I'm saying? Guess what? When they're going to swing, the back's going to swing out of the backfield. So corner, that's your guy. Go get him. Go get him. Just make sure when you arrive, you're under control. Don't miss because if you miss, we're going to be out of position and that could be a big play. Go ahead, Joe. If you're the Patriots, this will steam because you're on the road, first game, Ojo, in a hostile environment, and you control your own destiny down the stretch. Come on, man. Like you said, this will come back to hunt you late in the season, bro.
19:37Shannon Sharpe:You'd be like, man, I remember we played Seattle. You know what I mean? Yes. I think if you're the Patriots, obviously, if you're Drake, you got to clean up. What we talk about, turnovers. I don't care if it's basketball, football. I don't care what it is. You turn that ball over and you're on the road. That's an ass whipping waiting to happen. So when you turn the ball over, you're on the road, that's like your mama said, boy, going out there and getting that. Yep. Yep. Yep. You already know. You already know because that's what you're doing. You telling the team, yeah, I want y 'all to whip my ass today.
20:06Shannon Sharpe:We're going to turn it over today and come on and whip my ass. But I think we got to give a lot of credit to Drew Locke because Drew Locke, look, you prepare as if you're going to play. You never know if you're going to play. He might go – I mean, think about last year, how many games he went and never get an opportunity to play unless it was cleanup time or they got him getting blown out. But tonight, five, six, seven plays into the game, he's in the game. He's thrust into the game, and they're down. He played well. That's what you try to find in a backup quarterback. back, somebody that can come in and they're not in awe of the moment.
20:40Shannon Sharpe:The moment is not too big. He did. He seemed unfazed. He was very decisive. Hey, if there's a pass, my back foot hit, I'm letting it go. Uh, JSN, if it's not there, guess what? I'm going to tuck it and I'm going to get the hell up out of here. I'm not dilly-dallying around trying to make no big plays down the field. I'm not trying to be something. Cause I think sometimes guys, quarterbacks come into the game and they try to be something they're not. They're watching other people. They're like, Oh, I see Lamar, how he buys time, and I see Josh Allen buys time, and I see my homeboy. No, that's not you.
21:13Yeah.
21:14Joe Johnson:You know what I do like too, Uncle Joe? Even the fact that he wasn't a starting quarterback, but you want to prepare yourself if anything happened just in case. And tonight was one of those situations where it was just in case. He came in. He was 16 for 22. I think not a huge day, you know, throwing the ball, but he was efficient. You know, Kuba Cup with a beautiful catch over there on the sideline. Yeah, yeah, yeah. The running back as well, Jadarian Price. But I'm keeping wheels.
21:42Shannon Sharpe:Two of 11. You're not going to win very many games. You go two for 11 on third down. It wasn't like New England was much better. They were five or 16. Now, both teams were perfect on fourth down. But you keep going two of 11. You can't keep putting your defense out. The defense played really well tonight. I thought they did an unbelievable job giving the amount of plays they had to play. because 67 plays to 47. So you got 19 more plays ran against you, and you had to defend 19 more plays than what your offense ran. Normally that wears you down. Drake May was bad tonight. I don't care how good your defense is.
22:20Shannon Sharpe:If you're on the road, it's really hard for you to overcome in-up quarterback play unless the opposing quarterback is worse than your quarterback because your quarterback, he stunk it up tonight. And Chad, I don't think y 'all know I'm not being overdramatic. He was bad. And to exacerbate the situation, like you said, Joe, all could have been forgiven. Let's get that worst-case scenario. Let's get to overtime. Take our chances in overtime. I cannot end this game on an interception. Coach, hey, Josh McDaniel probably told him, son, be smart here. Yeah. Hey, we don't have any timeouts. Don't take any sacks.
22:57Shannon Sharpe:Don't be afraid to throw it out of bounds. Let's not do anything dumb. First and the last but not least, son, don't turn it over here. Hello. Hello. Don't turn it over here. Hello.
23:09Joe Johnson:I'll tell you one thing. They got ample time to get it together and get it right because the next defense that he does face, it ain't over now. What do you got? The Texans?
23:21Shannon Sharpe:The Steelers. Oh, yeah. Hey, I'm like y 'all, man. I give Drew Locke a lot of credit. Backup quarterbacks don't know when they're going to get a chance to play. it's almost like bench players in basketball. Sometime, man, in basketball, guys will go 10 straight games, Uncle Ocho, with DMPs. Don't play. But when your number called and you go out there and you deliver, bro, AAA, I'm telling you, it says volumes, bro. That's called a true professional. You know what I mean? Staying ready so you ain't got to get ready. And I think, you know, it's good for a lot of these young cats, bro, to see things like this because all they see is the glitz and glamour.
23:54Shannon Sharpe:and now you get to see a backup who comes into the game, manages the game well, and obviously was able to pull out a win. Romeo Dodds had a bad drop too though, Ojo. Oh, yeah, yeah. Hold on.
24:08Joe Johnson:Anytime, anything below the weight, not here. You here. Hold on. You don't need to catch it this way. You let that drop right in your bread basket. So you can't drop it.
24:22Shannon Sharpe:Hold on. Y 'all talking about 87, right? Yes. Yeah, man. They got everything right in his hands.
24:27Joe Johnson:Ooh-wee. Hey, and they blew the coverage. They switched it. The DB was on him. He had a condensed split. Once he went across the field, the safety had to come pick him up from the other side.
24:40Shannon Sharpe:Easy catch and turn up. He has a history, but Ocho, remember we talked about this at Green Bay, he has a history of bad drops. He'll make some difficult catches, and then he'll have the most routine. I'm like, bro, you are too good to have this kind of lapse in judgment. No, not in judgment, in concentration. I apologize, Chad. Lapse in concentration. Because that's all that is. When you drop a ball like that, that's just a lapse in concentration.
25:09Joe Johnson:You just talked about that a few shows ago. The easiest balls that you drop, Uncle Joe, is the ones that you wide open.
25:16Shannon Sharpe:Hey, Ocho. Ain't nobody else. More importantly, hell, after the drop, what happened after the drop? He threw a pick right after the drop. Right after it. He threw a pick right after the drop. You know what I mean? I'm like, hell, I was thinking to myself, damn, you the coach that maybe I don't throw no damn pick. If I'm the quarterback, you know what I mean? Oh, they be thinking that. Because I be thinking the same thing. I be thinking if you had thrown it to me, you wouldn't have thrown a pick. Yeah, I be thinking they faking, I'm faking, we all thinking the same thing. It's human nature to have those thoughts that creep into your mind.
25:47Shannon Sharpe:19 first down for the Patriots, 13 for Seattle, 5 of 16 on third down, 2 of 11 for Seattle, 67 plays to 48 plays. The yardage was very, very close, 277 to 285. The kneel down really don't count as a drive, but it did. So 10 drives to 9 drives. The Patriots dominated time of possession, 34 minutes to 25 minutes and 10 points because, look, these are two really, look, these are two really, really good defenses. But you can't help them out by turning the ball over because it makes your job even tougher. Yeah. And that's what happened tonight with the Patriots. Now, that's a long, long ride back home.

28:50Shannon Sharpe:I don't know, Joe. I know you was in the league and having to play in Seattle. That's a long, long-ass flight. to have to travel to New England yes when they say cross country Boston to Seattle that's cross country who is they not like the Rams the Rams got lay flat beds if they going all the way across to Australia you ain't got no lay flat beds hey hey hey after a loss that's tough but after a win Oh, man.
29:29Shannon Sharpe:Man, look here. I was just like, I wish I could just magically appear and be already back at them. Ain't nothing worse, man. We lost on a Monday night one time, Joe, to Miami on a Monday night. Ended up getting home by 5 o 'clock, 5.30 in the morning. Hell, I got me a workout in, so I ain't coming back over here. I ain't coming back over here on Tuesday. I was going to get my workout in now. I changed, got my workout in, me and Burns, and I said, hey, bro, hey, I guess I'll see you at the movies later today. A.J. Brown was ruled out for the rest of the game tonight due to an ankle injury. Brown went in for X-Rays.
30:05Shannon Sharpe:He finished with three catches, 26 yards in his Patriots debut.
30:12Shannon Sharpe:Rough way to start. It was. He had a touchdown. Drake may underthrew him. He got the P.I., ended up being a touchdown anyway. but I'm sure A.J. would have loved to catch that ball. Ran a great ride. Hey, they had them fooled. Drake May just didn't put enough on it to give him an opportunity. So we'll see what the X-rays say when it comes back. But Ocho, I'm thinking like you're thinking, it's probably a high ankle spray somewhere between two and four weeks, depending. But that just means the other guys got to step up. Remember, they traded Butte. And so now they got Romeo Dobbs, Hollins. going to have to play out of his mind.
30:51Shannon Sharpe:They're going to have to get the tight ends involved. I'm surprised the tight ends weren't involved even more. Right.
30:58Joe Johnson:With him going down? With Avery going down?
31:00Shannon Sharpe:Because, you know, that offense is really relying on tight ends. The tight ends play a real – you know, Hunter Henry and the other guy, he caught a touchdown. But I'm trying to look. I don't think – no, look at that. Mack Hollins had four. Ramondre Stevenson had five. Hunter Henry had three. AJ had three. Demario Douglas had five.
31:21Shannon Sharpe:Hey, you got to give Seahawks a lot of credit, Uncle Ocho. You know what I mean? Hey, if your defense is only going to give up 10 points, you're probably going to win a lot of games. You're going to win a lot of games. Yeah, right, you're going to win a lot of games. Yeah, and them boys stingy. You hear me? Them boys stingy out there. So, you talking about you surprised why they didn't get them tight ends involved. Boy, they got some hell raisers out there. They be coming. Yeah, they do. They fast. They fly to the football. they want to be their own legion of boom. They got their own, I don't know what they call the dark side or whatever they call their defense, but they fly around to the football.
31:56Shannon Sharpe:Yes. They get the football in a hurry. And when you give up 10 points and you take the ball away three times, yeah, there's a good chance. There's a high probability you're going to win this ball game. So Seattle gets the first victory over tonight. They celebrate. They raise the banner. the second in their franchise history. 13-10 victory over the New England Patriots. But it was a sloppy game by New England, but Drew Locke deserves a lot of credit. Oh, yeah. I came downstairs. But I'm thinking because they normally give guys on NBC the football. I'm sure Drew Locke got the football. Oh, yeah.
32:36Shannon Sharpe:He definitely deserved it. Yeah, he should have. I'm almost certain he got the football. From Sheff, Darnold has been at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle undergoing a CT scan on his hip. The initial test was encouraging but inconclusive, and Darnold now is scheduled to have an undergourd MRI on Thursday. Poor Mike McDonald. Darnold avoided a hip fracture. Ooh. It looked nasty, too. Because the thing is, Joe, man, look. Ocho, you know, we probably follow. You really not try to follow your knees, Joe, on that hard ass. a court that wouldn't court. But Ochoa, we can't help it. Because sometimes we got to go to our knees to try to catch a football.
33:19Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. And sometimes you jump up in there and you come down on your knees. Yeah. And that's why I like dirt. Because that dirt, that natural grass gives a little bit. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. That turf ain't going to give, is it? Hell no. Hell no. Hey, I think what hurt him was he didn't see the sack coming. He didn't see dude behind. So when he grabbed him, that's what kind of threw him off because he wasn't anticipating on that. But, yeah, it looked like his knee – His weight and the guy on top of him weight. Yeah. And for him not to come back, Ocho, it tells me, man, it's probably very serious.
33:57Shannon Sharpe:I don't know if it's that serious, but I know he's – maybe – because think about it. He gets a long time to recover. This is a Wednesday. They don't play until next Sunday. So that's a long time, Joe. Think about it, Joe. That's a whole week between now and Wednesday. He might not practice. Probably just got it jammed. Like I said, I don't think it's a hip fracture. I don't know. Because if you go back and look how Bo got a hip fracture, he got snatched down from the back. Yeah, he running with too much force in Joe. Yeah. Come on. But it's painful. I know it hurt. He's like, I don't know what it is.
34:37Shannon Sharpe:I just know it's painful. That's what I do know. All that other stuff, y 'all talking about, it ain't a hip fracture. It might be a hip point. It might be a bruise or contusion. All that ish hurts. Yeah. And it's going to just take some time. You know, hey, he going to feel it. When he come out there, he going to be walking like me. You can't be back there trying to play quarterback with them dogs after you are getting Ocho. Nah, nah. Man, listen. Boy, please. Nah. A wounded dog? Go ahead, Joe. Yeah, I'm saying, think about defenses, bro. They already know you wounded. Boy, they really going to be out there.
35:12Shannon Sharpe:You hear me? Come on. And they know you can't move? Yeah. Yeah, they put his back and they coming for it. That's what they should do. You wounded. Go look at the Serengeti. What they get? They get the old and the young. Yep. The ones that can least defend themselves. So if you back there playing quarterback, you can't defend yourself. It ain't my responsibility to take care of you. That's your coach's job. He don't think enough of you. He thought less than enough for you to put your ass out here. I think less than enough for you to take your ass down. That's just the way it is.
35:42Shannon Sharpe:It's a dog-eat-dog world in sports. Ain't no way around it. Especially in football, Joe. We hunt. That's what we do. We hunt. We trying to find a weak link. And if we find that, you got a long day in front of you, bro. I don't care what your position is. On the defensive side of football, you can be a safety. You can be a corner. You can be an N, a DT, a linebacker, whatever it is. If we find that weakness, you'll get a heavy dose of this. That's how I move, Unc. Once I find out you got a weakness, kind of like me and Ocho and PV. Once I seen he had them damn boots on, I seen that weakness, I went at his ass.
36:21Shannon Sharpe:You saw he ain't had no left hand, huh, Joe? Yeah, you saw he ain't had no left hand. You seen it? You seen it? I'm going to let it go. I'm going to let it go. My bad, Ocho. My bad. My bad, Ocho. I'm going to let it go. Hey, Joe, let me tell you something, Joe. My bad. Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on.
36:38Joe Johnson:Let me tell you something. I'm not going to dress this no more, Joe. I do my kids sometimes. Sometimes you got to let the kids win to build character, Joe. I was just letting you be your character. So we build them. We build the stages. Yeah, yeah. I'm building a confident character. Now you get a little character. All right. My bad. My bad, Ocho. My bad.
36:57Shannon Sharpe:But Joe, they say in the chat, you look like you graduated kindergarten. Me? Yeah. Yeah, so you got a cap and tassel on. All right, now. So you don't graduate a head start. Turn it to the right.
37:14Shannon Sharpe:No, but obviously, look, they're holding their breath. They don't know. They said it was inconclusive. Now he's going to get an MRI. I'm sure he's going to show some inflammation. Yeah. Because that thing is really inflamed right now. So hopefully that's all it shows is inflammation in that hip. Nothing serious. Hey, I don't know about you, but hey. The quickest way to get that inflammation out? Put that needle in it. Yeah. Hey, Joe, that's the quickest way to calm that inflammation down. Hey, that and the little ice. Needle and ice. Needle and ice, yeah. If he thinking about putting that thing back on the freeway, and you mean to tell me he ain't going to been done for, what, a week and a half?
37:57Shannon Sharpe:Man, please. Y 'all know what's going to happen? No, you can't go out there with no flat tire. No, no, sir. If he weighs down, just die, bro. Bloop, bloop, bloop, bloop, bloop, bloop.
38:08Joe Johnson:Bang. Now, he going to be all right. He going to be all right. I'll tell you something. Listen, Drake may be going to look like this again. I can tell you that. He can't. You know they going to fix that quick. Think about this. Think about all the looks, right? It's the first game of the season, I'm going to joke. This ain't preseason. You know, the preseason is easy, obviously. You know, excuse me. You know, if you're a starter, but now you're getting all type of different looks, you know, rotations, people moving. So it's a little different. Then the speed, getting acclimated to the speed of the game as well.
38:42Joe Johnson:Week one, okay. Some of those balls, some of those balls, they should have been gone. You late.
38:48Shannon Sharpe:Hey, Ocho, he ain't going to have to play against the Seahawks every damn week. We understand that.
38:54Joe Johnson:I know, I know. But he going to face some good defense. Listen, the Steelers that they got to face on the Twini, they ain't no slouch. Yeah, I already know.
39:00Shannon Sharpe:If you got to face the Broncos, if you got to face the Texans. Hey, boy, good luck. Without the schedule in front of me, hey, there ain't no easy road home now. And that's what's so difficult is that, you know, trying to get back, you know, we're AFC champs. Okay. What they got to do with us? We try to be AFC champs this year and to defend and to repeat. It gets hard. Them teams have studied you all year. They know your tendencies. They know what you like to do. Yeah. Man, I hate that for A.J. Brown, though. Yeah, man. He was trying to catch a little rhythm. Don't it always happen like, Ocho, we talk about this all the time.
39:43Shannon Sharpe:Every time you want to go somewhere, you complain about the ball. It's like, why the ball got to find me when you know I ain't ready for it? I done been complaining about it. And then you throw me the ball and I drop it. I was like, damn. I was just looking at him. I'm like, I know what's, I said, I've been there. I know exactly what's going through his mind. He's like, damn it. Three, yeah, three for 26. He started, he caught him a few balls. He, hey, the football guys, man, the football guys. Okay, Ojo?
40:13Joe Johnson:Yeah. Hey, timing, huh? That should have been a touchdown. I don't know what the, was it slant and go? I don't know what it was, but the ball should have been gone. You hanging the ball up, you hanging the ball up there like a moon ball. As soon as it come out that break, that ball's supposed to be in the air.
40:30Shannon Sharpe:Hold on, you talking about the little flea flicker joint? Yes.
40:33Joe Johnson:Yeah. Oh, yeah.
40:33Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, he's supposed to edit things out. And he's sitting there. He get the flea flicker and he take a hitch. Don't need a hitch. No, he don't need no hitch. You're looking. Just let it go. Because first of all, I don't know what the corner's looking at. You can't do nothing. You got A.J. Brown man to man. But you see him cluing inside, don't you? You see him looking at the running back? Yeah. AJ Brown just gradually take off on him. And he did a great look. He did a great job interfering with him. Hey, I ain't give you no touchdown. I think you'll take the interference call. Oh, he was finna try to jump that.
41:07Shannon Sharpe:It wasn't. No, he thought the running back. Oh, the run. He thought he was going to run. He was going to make a play. Joe, sometimes we got to play hero ball too now. I like to be a hero sometimes. I will tackle, you know, corner. Most times people say, you ain't going to do a corner. You're not going to tackle. Yeah. He was like, let me show you how I'm going to fly to the football. Hey, but hold on. They caught him looking in the back. That's all.
41:31Joe Johnson:Uh-huh. And that come down to doing one thing. Do your job. That's not his job, bro. Fill in the hole.
41:38Shannon Sharpe:That's not his job.
41:40Joe Johnson:Yeah. Hey, read your keys.
41:42Shannon Sharpe:Keep your eyes on where they're supposed to be. Which is the most dangerous guy is right there in front of me, Ocho. Man. That's it. If Stevenson get through that D-line, get through them linebackers and get to me, I tackle him then. I'm not trying to – I'm not, as a corner, I'm not trying to stop no running back for a two-yard game. Not that he's coming through the A or the B gap. Now, if he's coming around the edges, that's something entirely different.
42:10Joe Johnson:If he get past the second level, that's something entirely different. Absolutely. Then I do what I'm supposed to do.
42:16Shannon Sharpe:To no one's surprise, Vikings head coach Kevin O 'Connell has announced Carson Wentz will serve as the team's backup quarterback on Sunday, with J.J. McCarthy will serve as the third quarterback. Here's O 'Connell on the decision. Yeah, Glenn, J.I., so we're going to, you know, Carson will be the backup on Sunday, and, you know, J.J. will obviously be the third guy. And really, I'm looking at that right now, Kevin, as a week-to-week thing. And I think, you know, Carson, he's got almost 100 career starts. what he was able to do last year from a standpoint of very limited repetition, but being able to apply a career's worth of experience, that's kind of what you need to do as a backup quarterback, especially early on when so much of the emphasis is going to be on getting Kyler as comfortable as we can possibly get him.
43:07But J.J. is, you know, he's still going to get a bunch of great work, you know, as Carson will, you know, giving our defense a look. And then there's time before, there's time after the development of a player that, you know, we're really, you know, I'm just really excited to continue to get a chance to work with him and then want to make it week to week. So, you know, when we feel like we need to, you know, declare something different, we can and we will.
43:34Joe Johnson:I mean, that should be no surprise to anybody. That should be no surprise to anybody. You know, how the peck in order went. You knew J.J. McCarthy was going to be the third quarterback. You know, I mean, some people thought, you know, they would let him go or maybe trade him, see if he can find some value, you know, base as high as he went as a pick. But he's a project at this point, huh? Yes. He's a project. But right now we don't have time to deal with the project. Owners, teams, and coaches, we want to win right now because players like that with the inconsistency J.J. McCarthy played with last year, that gets you sitting home and gets you fired.
44:08Joe Johnson:You got to uproot your family and your kids. You know, I'm just being honest, Joe. Boy, at least you feel short, man, in today's team. You need a quarterback. Everything starts with a quarterback. If you don't have that foundational piece, you're not going nowhere. And Coach understands that, which is why Kyler Murray, you know, is the starter quarterback. And Carson Wentz, based on what he's been able to do in the past, he's number two. But again, one thing that we said, we saw two injuries tonight from key players. You're an injury away from being in the game. Oh, we. Hey, we need Kyler Murray to be healthy this year.
44:44Joe Johnson:He's had injuries in the past. He got injured this last year in Arizona when Jacoby Brissett had to start.
44:52Shannon Sharpe:And we're playing well. But guess what? All three of the quarterbacks have an injury history. Kyler Murray, Carson Wentz, and J.J. McCarthy. So, ain't none of them made of what we would call durable. So, you know what they say to me. Hey, they don't have no faith in J.J. McCarthy. None. Absolutely none. None. Hey, hey, hey, they don't plan on giving him no chance. We going with experienced backup. It just says that they have no faith in him, bro. Like, they gave him an opportunity. He didn't seize the moment. Now he the third quarterback. Where they cooking themselves in the ass. For giving up Sam Donald, for letting him walk.
45:32Shannon Sharpe:Yes! But, hey, hold up, though. Hold up, hold up. It's hard to really blame him on Ocho because you don't really know. You know what I mean? Yeah, yeah. If you keep Sam Donald, you don't know what J.J. McCarthy's going to be. They had to give him a opportunity in the first round. Huh? I ain't trying to find out either.
45:47Joe Johnson:I definitely ain't trying to find out. Not after that run they had. He was 14-3.
45:51Shannon Sharpe:And what, Ocho, and I said, look, if he wants 50, 55 million, I'm going to be reluctant. But what he got was 30. He got a Baker Mayfield deal. 33, like three years for 103 million. Joe, 104 million dollars. That's nothing. Hold on. He got that before he won? No, that's what Seattle paid him to come there. Oh, yeah, yeah. Yeah, okay. I'm saying now if he was wanting 50, 55 million, I'm going to have to like, damn. Woo. Woo. That kind of commitment. But a 30, a 35 million, a 30 to 35 million, I can sleep with myself. I can live with myself making that decision. Right. Now look at you. You're searching.
46:33Shannon Sharpe:You're searching for a quarterback. You got all those weapons. Look at what you got at the receiver. Look at you got Hawkinson at tight end. You got Addison. You got Jetta. You got Jones in the backfield. You got an outstanding defense. The one missing piece is the most important piece. All those other pieces don't matter if you don't got that guy. I don't give a damn how good your defense is. I don't care if you got Chase, you got Jetta, you got Trey McBride. I don't give a damn who you got.
47:00Joe Johnson:I know one thing. I'm not a scout. I'm not a scout, Joe. but if I'm watching film and I think a quarterback is going to be picked that high, at least let what he did in college have some type of reflection in what we do here in Minnesota. It's not even the same. They don't even throw the ball. No disrespect to the Michigan Wolverines. They win the ball. And then they play action off the run. We are in a past happy league. You got Jettis, you got Addison, you got Hawkinson. Like Unc just said, We're going to throw the ball. So you rolling the dice anyway. And I just got a guy, and I'm going to let him go, and we just went 14-3, even though we got to the playoffs and lost.
47:47Joe Johnson:But I know what I get with him, as opposed to I don't know
47:50Shannon Sharpe:what I'm getting with this one. And he was familiar with your offense because, remember, he came from San Francisco. It runs the same type of offense. I don't know, man. I don't know how y 'all blame the Vikings when Sam Donald was like a journeyman. Okay, Ocho, y 'all act like where he been, he just been...
48:07Joe Johnson:Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. He's a journeyman. Wait a minute now, wait a minute. He started out with the Jets. That's a journey in itself. You got a point. Johnny Depp, hey, that's like being Johnny Depp in the Pirates of the Caribbean. Hey, don't tell him what you gonna get over there. The Jets haven't done right by a quarterback since goddamn Joe Namath. You know? So that started from the top and triggered his way down. So really no quarterback has really had success over there. And the time that the Jets have had success is because the goddamn defense was all world. You're right.
48:43Joe Johnson:Then he goes to Carolina.
48:45Shannon Sharpe:I mean, come on. I'm just saying, man. You act like he out here. You know what I mean? Like, he ain't been putting it in. But here's the thing, though, Joe. For$30,$35 million, which is not a lot of money for a quarterback. now like I said it would have caused me some concern if I got to give up 50 55 million but he got a similar deal to what Baker Mayfield got in Tampa now he's probably going to get if he comes back and plays as well as he did last year even if they don't get the Super Bowl they're probably going to tear that contract up and give him another similar deal 50 55 million that's all I'm saying I think I think he had played well enough to get take another look yeah
49:27Joe Johnson:he definitely deserved that
49:29Shannon Sharpe:that's all I'm saying I believe he had played well enough 14 man do you know how hard it is to win 14 games in the NFL he won 14 games no matter yeah I understand he was at the Jets Tom Brady might have been failed Tom Brady and Peyton Manning might have failed at the Jets the only way the only way I believe is not the Jets is that Tom Brady or Peyton Manning had gone there and they had success. Other than that, nope. Nope. I mean, what quarterback in free agency says, you know what? My number one destination is the Jets. Hell no. Unless he knows he's getting a bad. I don't think anybody is surprised by this.
50:17Shannon Sharpe:Like I said, I thought they would try and trade him because I knew at best case scenario, he's going to be three. If you go back and look at it, Bozmer played better than he did in the preseason. Yeah. Yeah. If we're being all the way honest, everybody played better than he did.
50:46Shannon Sharpe:But now, and Coach's like, well, I'm looking forward to working with, well, if you want to work with him so much, you can put him after you put him F2.
50:57Shannon Sharpe:Man, what the hell you doing? What the dude got going on, man? Come on, bro. Man, tell your camera down. They want to see your ass. Come on, man. Come on, man.
51:09Joe Johnson:Hey, no, no. I'm using the bench. You know the bench that they got in front of the bed? I ain't got no back, so now my back hurts, so I'm just finna grab a chair. Hey, y 'all put me in the suite, huh?
51:20Shannon Sharpe:Yeah.
51:22Joe Johnson:Hey, I appreciate that, boy. Hey, you notice I'm not smoking in here because y 'all paid for the room, huh? Smoke it up.
51:29Shannon Sharpe:You welcome. Oh, I can smoke? Hey, smoke it up. Hey, you better not smoke, boy. That's a$1 ,000 fee. No, it ain't. It's only$250, Joe. Where you at? You know what? Don't worry about it.
51:42Joe Johnson:Hey, who you gonna pull this? Yeah, my bad.
51:51Shannon Sharpe:But no, no, I just think the thing is that Kevin O 'Connor realized he's on the hot seat too, Joe. Yeah. Yeah, he on the hot seat. Hell yeah. That's why he ain't taking no chances with JJ. He's like, look, I'm going out with these veteran guys. Kyle is going to get first dabs. I think he's going to be all right, though, Uncle Ocho. I know he's a little smaller, but I think understanding the circumstances, the situation that he's put in, hell, after this one, it may not be another one. Well, I think the thing is that, Joe, it's just hard to stay healthy at that size, especially because what makes him dynamic is his running ability.
52:29Shannon Sharpe:And when you run, you put yourself in harm's way. People say, well, Drew Brees wasn't big. Drew Brees didn't put himself in damn harm's way. Drew Brees wasn't out there running around like Speedy Gonzalez. Drew Brees was getting the damn ball out of his hands. Yeah, yeah. A smaller quarterback that's – and it's a blessing and a curse because if you go back and – if you look at history, guys that have gotten sacked the most, Joe, have been your most athletic quarterbacks. Yeah. You look at Randall Cunningham. You look at Michael Vick. Look at – look at – look at all the guys. You're like, how you get sacked that much as athletic as you are?
53:03Shannon Sharpe:Because you run yourself out of – you run yourself out of danger on the front side but run yourself into something on the back side. And then you become so reliant on that. 55:33Shannon Sharpe:faster than you think. This ain't college. Them defenses ain't change your ass down. Them boys move. I'm talking about, man, them some big boys out there moving too. Yes. Them boys ain't, we talking about some 215, 220. Them boys big, man. I'm talking about 265. Yeah, they 265, 275. Look at Myles Garrett. What? That's 6 '4 and a half, 270 moving like that. Look at Will Anderson Jr. Look at those guys. Man, them guys moving. Man, can you imagine? And they're coming with bad intentions too. You hear me? I'm telling you, can you imagine how you feel after a game? I'm thinking if you're a running back because you're getting hit so damn much.
56:08Shannon Sharpe:Man, come on, man. That's what I tell my hat to Derrick Henry. Look at all those. And his upright running style, that's why he went in the second round because people are like, there is no way he can have that upright running style and last beyond five years, especially all the carries that he had in high school, all the carries that he had in just three years of college. Ain't no way he can survive more than three to four years. And here he is, you know, 10, 11 years into the league, and he's got 13 ,000 yards with an outside chance of being, at worst case, maybe three, four, maybe two or three.
56:43Shannon Sharpe:He might even catch him. He's like 5 ,500 yards short of Emmitt. Hey, you know what amazes me is that when Derek, when he gets to that second level, Uncle Ocho, it seems like it's hard to catch him, boy. Oh, yeah, he can run that.
56:57Joe Johnson:Oh, yeah, he can run that, Joe. He can run that. Hey, too, when I think about other running backs that had that upright running style, I think about Roger Craig. Even though he lift his leg high, he was still upright. Remember Roberts in Minnesota? He ran tall, too.
57:18Shannon Sharpe:He did. He didn't run his style. It was so smooth. But see, the thing is with Raj, Raj didn't get the carries. He didn't get the workload because Raj was mainly a runner and a receiver. so they split between running but you know Derrick Henry getting the ball 300 carries 350, 400, man come on man damn
57:39Joe Johnson:hey Joe don't nobody want to hit Derrick Henry man once he get to that second level when he got a hit them boys don't want none of that smoke you know what's funny TV don't do you no justice TV don't do no justice you see that dude man up close in person and he running full speed and he get past that first level and oh man. He gone. I'm attacking his pinky toe.
58:08Shannon Sharpe:The Buccaneers and Baker Mayfield have agreed to a three-year extension for$165 million. The extension includes$110 million now in guarantees on top of the$40 million guarantee that Mayfield is scheduled to make in 2026. The Bucs originally offered Baker Mayfield two years at$50 million, but Mayfield and his agent Tom Mills felt that the deal was too light. The new deal averages$55 million per season, tied to third highest in the league. You see, Joe? Yeah. He got a$33 million deal. Because he signed a one-year deal for about$5 million. Plays really well. Boom. Now they say, you know what? They gave him three years,$100 million.
58:49Shannon Sharpe:About$33 ,000,$300 ,000 per year. Yeah. That's all Minnesota had to do. That's all Minnesota had to do right there. And guess what? Prove it. If it don't work out, you walk, hey, 33 ain't nothing. But you can't let it walk out the door for nothing, though, Joe. See, that's what really hurts you, is that you let it walk out the door and you ain't get nothing in return for it. Yeah.
59:10Joe Johnson:Yeah, absolutely. I like what Baker did. Obviously, Joe and Joe, it was a proven season. He proved it that season with a bit, I don't want to say low ball. I'm just saying based on the starting quarterback, it wasn't a respectable number. Then they come back, they take care of him. Okay, we believe in you. let's see what this with this three year no hunted okay i showed you what i had i could do i'm the heart soul of the team i give us a chance to win every time we go out there and compete okay now what y 'all want to do take care of your boy because you ain't got no answer behind him ain't no answers behind him so they had no they had no choice in a sense he has the leverage he has the power and he understood that.
59:52Joe Johnson:Hey, look, and I think before you go, Joe, him saying something too, that's the first time I heard a quarterback have to come out and be vocal about it. It don't happen often. That's the first time.
1:00:04Shannon Sharpe:Because they normally, they were like,
1:00:10Shannon Sharpe:then they realized they ain't got no choice. Right. When you realize without a quarterback, you ain't got no chance of winning. Tampa, you already been through that. Yeah. You remember you had an outstanding defense. Yeah. And then it took Tom Brady to come and not turn the ball over and play well to win your championship. And then the three years you had Brady there, you had an expectation of getting to the playoffs and making a deep run. That's what quarterbacks give you. And see, when you let somebody walk out the building, Joe, and you don't get anything for them, it's like being, like my old man used to say, boy, it's like being mad without a prenup.
1:00:47Shannon Sharpe:They take half the money and all the hoo-ha. Boy, that's a lose-lose, ain't it, Joe? Yeah, yeah, it's a lose-lose. I mean, they're taking half the money and all the hoo-ha with them. I think for the Vikings' sake, you know, they were banking on J.J. McCarthy, but the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, they couldn't let Baker get out of there, fellas. True. Well, they had no backup plan. You know what I mean? They had to pay him. So, I don't know what took so long.
1:01:19Shannon Sharpe:Well, they don't want to be tied too long. And they didn't want to get to a four-year, five-year deal. You know what I'm saying, Joe? Yeah. Like three years. They wanted to go two. You see, the first off was two for 50. And soldiers, yeah. This year, plus two more. That's kind of where they wanted to go. But Baker did something smart. Baker says, hold on. I've got to keep it at least second because Caleb Williams is coming behind me. CJ Stroud is coming behind me. Bryce Young is coming behind me. There are a lot of guys that are coming behind me. I'm not taking a step back. Yeah. I'm going to keep pushing this ball forward because I promise you, Caleb Williams ain't taking$55 million.
1:02:04Shannon Sharpe:I can promise you CJ Stroud ain't getting$55 million. They're looking for$60 million. You heard the report, so I don't know if they're true, that CJ wants$70 million. Damn.
1:02:15Joe Johnson:he's not going to get 70. He'll be somewhere between 60 or 62. But hold on. He has to play well. He has to play well this year. I agree. But I think out of three quarterbacks that you named, Jaden Daniels is also in that picture. Drake May. Oh, yeah, Drake May's in that picture. It depends on who goes first. But the one with the most upside to me that will probably reset the market and be the highest paid will probably be Caleb Williams.
1:02:45Shannon Sharpe:And they're going to be reluctant. They're going to be real reluctant for somebody to go past Mahone boy now. Because you're talking about a guy that's won three Super Bowls, been to five, two-time league MVP, a 5 ,000-yard passing season, a 50-touchdown passing season. He's universally regarded as the best quarterback in football. Although Josh Allen contends and, you know, when you list him, it's normally Mahone boy Josh Allen and your quarterback, Joe. Ocho. Dang. Joe. Joe Burrell. Joe, Joe. Joe. Yeah, those normally the top three, you mix them up, then Lamar comes in there and you get – some people say Dak and – Matthew Stafford don't got to take a backseat to nobody.
1:03:24No.
1:03:25Shannon Sharpe:I don't know if you noticed it. Matthew Stafford ain't got to take a backseat to nobody. No. Because he can make every throw. Now, he ain't got the legs those other guys got. But his arm talent is second to none. Hello. That boy got a rocking one. Yeah, I – Hey, he might be top five, and I ain't sure he 2, 3, 4, or 5 when it comes to just arm talent. I'm just saying. Y 'all watched him. Yeah, yeah. Hey, boy got some weapons over there now. But I'm glad, I'm glad that Baker was able to get his money. Given what he had to go through in Cleveland, they didn't believe in him. They didn't like his style of leadership.
1:04:08Shannon Sharpe:Everybody can't lead like Peyton and Tom. And it seems like that's the standard, don't you? You got to be buttoned up like those guys. You got to be, you know, I get it. I know sometimes you can't, you know, the one thing that I think is universal, when things go bad, you take it on you, put it on you. Yeah. Yes. You always stand at the forefront because when things go good, you getting all the damn credit. Hello. So when it's bad, that's on me. Put that on me. I need to play better. Certain things, how do you handle certain things? I think you have to do. But leadership, people lead, you know, different ways.
1:04:46Shannon Sharpe:What you think? What you thinking, guys? Yeah, I'm with you. I think the accountability part that you're talking about, like I love when a guy steps to the podium, Ocho, and he say, hey, look, I got to be better. I mean, my play tonight wasn't up to par. You know what I mean? Versus pointing the finger and, you know what I mean? Like, just take the accountability, bro, and keep moving because I think from a fan's perspective, we'd appreciate that a lot more. You know what I mean? Versus pointing the finger trying to call other guys out. Yeah.
1:05:15Joe Johnson:I mean, I think most quarterbacks do do it that way. I think maybe the only thing, the only one I can think of, you know, Uncle, who has been known to chastise, you know, those that, who make mistakes is Aaron Rodgers. Yeah. Aaron Rodgers will say, you know, what's wrong with it? Aaron Rodgers,
1:05:32Shannon Sharpe:you're going to drive a bus now. It will slap over you. Yeah.
1:05:38Joe Johnson:I think every other quarterback they're very PC and answer the questions the right way and when things go well they send the praise elsewhere and when things don't go well they take accountability
1:05:51Shannon Sharpe:you used to kill Baker I did, not kill him again if he play bad that ain't no secret I don't hold no punches, that's who I am hey, y 'all, you already know when you hear me talk If somebody play good, I'm going to say they play good. If somebody play bad, I'm going to say they play bad. It don't matter who they are. It don't matter what color they are. It don't matter how many years they've been in the league. And when I say things, I don't try to take – I can't, even if I could, I can't. I can't take away what somebody's already won. If you won a Super Bowl, if you're an MVP, if you're an offensive player of the year, a rookie of the year, I can't take those awards away.
1:06:31Shannon Sharpe:But the thing is about sports is that I love the most about it. you gotta update that resume on a weekly basis this ain't no way every three months they say in the real world you're supposed to update your resume every three months no no no no you don't get that luxury in pro sports you update that thing on a weekly basis in football and in basketball you update it two to three nights a week hello so ain't nothing change chat y 'all know who I am y 'all know my resume y 'all know what I do if somebody play bad I'm gonna say they play bad And that's why as a professional, Chad, as a professional, you have to have short-term memory.
1:07:09Shannon Sharpe:You have to have short-term memory to be able to last in the NFL or the NBA or any other professional sport because there's going to be some good days. There's going to be some not-so-good days. But those not-so-good days, how you get through them, it's going to determine the success that you have in whatever sport that you're playing, bro. You know what I mean? Well, Skip, and I used to argue all the time. I said I thought Sam Darnold was better than Baker. I said but he went to the Jets I said what name the quarterback that got drafted to the Jets that had success Hell it ain't been one I mean you gotta talk about you gotta go back 60 years with Joe Namath 60 ain't nobody none of these people was even born when the Jets had a good quarterback I mean Chad Pennington was okay but come on now Mark Sanchez had a nice little run but that was defense it wasn't him that defense was top two that wasn't him Joe Burrow told Jeff Hobson I'm here for the long haul I'm not going anywhere I'm just trying to bring a now or never mentality to a day by day process if you're not what are you doing attack the day with a championship mindset and the rest will take care of itself I'm just really proud to be quarterback of the Bengals.
1:08:30Shannon Sharpe:I'm happy to be here. I'm proud to represent the city of Cincinnati, the state of Ohio, the Brown family. I'm just proud, and I want to make everybody else proud also. Damn, Ocho, why ain't he walking back them comments? What's going on?
1:08:44Joe Johnson:He ain't walking them back. Hold on. No, he ain't walking nothing back, Uncle Joe. Listen, the message was heard loud and clear. The message Joe Burrow put out was heard loud and clear. In the offseason, during the mess was heard loud and clear. I think last year he said some things in encrypted format, you know, that Dan Oloski, you know, said some of the things he said and saying, oh, he wants out. But now we, we as a team, because I'm part of the team too, we got to put up a shut up because Mike Brown and Katie, Mr. Blackburn, they didn't gave you everything you want, man. They gave you pieces defensively, right?
1:09:20Joe Johnson:We got Brother Cook. We got Brother Allen, you know, from the Commanders. We got Dexter Lawrence from the Giants. We got some good rookies in there. One of my favorite rookies going into his second year. Brother Demetrius Knight. Boy, I need you flying all over the place, boy. Because every time I watch film and watch you defensively, boy, you pop out. You hear me? So, boom, offensively. Hold on, on top of Joe. Joe, we need you to stay healthy, baby. So that's also on our offensive line as well. But we need you to stay healthy. for us to have a chance this year. That's key. You got to stay upright.
1:09:56Joe Johnson:Hey, look. That's it. So to us, based on everything that Joe Burrow has said, he's added pressure and fuel to the fire. Because now the onus and eyes, we watching you now, based on everything you said. And I love the mentality. I love the, you know, saying all the right things and getting everybody hyped and wanting to take accountability. kind of forcing everybody to play at a high level on offense, on defense. But now, if things don't go well, now you gave everybody ammunition. Everybody has ammunition now. So I think we're going to be all right. I can tell you that. I'll tell you one thing.
1:10:36Joe Johnson:We winning AFC North.
1:10:38Shannon Sharpe:You hear me? I like your confidence. Joe ready to get out there. He ready to get out there and play. He ready to win. Okay, I'll hold you. Yeah, that's my quarterback, Joe. He ain't playing. I've seen some clips with him and Chase. you know I love the bond that they have and I think they got great chemistry like you say Joe gotta stay healthy if he stay healthy hey they got a great chance he just look like a guy who's kind of gotten a little frustrated with a lot of these questions because he knows the narrative about the Bengals him and his health so I think Joe ready to get out there and get to it bro got no choice yeah he really didn't have a choice because like you said you got two high price receivers receivers, yourself making the money.
1:11:20Shannon Sharpe:You said you wanted to upgrade the defense. They've upgraded the defense. They've redecorated the house. Yep. In your life, for your likeness, to your specifications. Mm-hmm. It's on you, not rolling. Yeah. You got to stay healthy. I just don't, Ocho, your offensive line just still scared me. They scared me, Ocho. Hey, don't do that.
1:11:43Joe Johnson:Don't do that. We got men. We got Orlando Brown. we got Ted, we got Carrie, we gonna be alright though I sure hope so I sure hope so you know who get to taste that Bengal Razzle one, Uncle Joe Tampa Bay we just finished talking about Baker Mayfield we out playing that they playing in Cincinnati oh okay as a matter of fact let me tell you something Joe hold on hey Joe, Uncle Joe and this is gonna go for everybody in the chat too Honestly, with a team like we got, it don't matter whether we was playing home or we was playing at Raymond James Stadium. Either way, the end result is still going to be the same.
1:12:26Joe Johnson:Boy, Cincinnati going to scope out 42 points, boy. I like your confidence, Ocho.
1:12:30Shannon Sharpe:I like it.
1:12:31Joe Johnson:It ain't about confidence, Joe. Who going to stop us offensively?
1:12:35Shannon Sharpe:I mean, hey, I've seen. Look about it. Listen, we just watched a game where two key guys just went out. So anything is possible now.
1:12:45Joe Johnson:Hey, Joe. Hey, Joe, don't be talking that devil talk when it comes to my team. Don't do that. My bad. My bad. I'm just saying. I'm just saying. All right. My bad. When it comes to your Cowboys, I've been praising your Cowboys, Joe. Don't do that.
1:12:58Shannon Sharpe:You said you're up for fair, Joe. Don't let it fool you. Yeah, I already know. I already know. Joe, you thought you had something, Joe. You thought you were going to come in here your first year on Night Cowboys football season and your team go. Yeah, yeah. Hey, he ain't the only one thinking like that. You thinking like that, too. I know you. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, I know what's going on. I know. I know what's going on. Yeah, y 'all can't fool me. Your day coming, though. See? See? Look, look, look.
1:13:24Joe Johnson:Hey, I'm feeling good. Hey, Ameca Buka. I know you're going to see this, boy. Ameca Buka. DJ Turner. Huh? Huh? Bucky Irvin. Don't even think about running through the A-gap. Don't. nothing boy I'm telling you okay huh
1:13:44Shannon Sharpe:you talking real big
1:13:46Joe Johnson:you talking real big who they yeah hey we gonna see Sunday when we come on the show too who the Broncos play huh
1:13:53Shannon Sharpe:we play Monday night play Kansas City in Kansas City ooh oh lord that's an L
1:14:01Joe Johnson:hey hey hey Joe hey that's L that's L okay hey that's L I know you nervous tell me you're not nervous be honest Bo Nick coming up with dislocated ankle. You know, you got an 85 % Patrick Mahone coming back. Come on, what are we talking about?
1:14:18Shannon Sharpe:I ain't gonna lie. Well, I'm Bronco. And you know they always – And the left tackle ain't playing. They go with an undrafted rookie at left tackle. Oh, Lord.
1:14:30Shannon Sharpe:Bo Nito.
1:14:35Joe Johnson:It's going to be rough. Hold on, Joe. You laughing too hard, Joe. Who y 'all? Who y 'all got Sunday? We got G-Men. The Giants.
1:14:44Shannon Sharpe:You already know. Hey, hey, hey. What you said? What you... Ah! We putting it down. You hear me?
1:14:48Joe Johnson:Yeah. Hey, hey. Hold on. Hold on, Joe. Hold on, Joe. What's going to happen when Deron Bland got to cover OBJ? What's going to happen? Yeah, when Deron Bland got to cover OBJ. Watch the game.
1:14:59Shannon Sharpe:You going to see what's going to happen? Yeah. Okay. Watch the game. Wait, we strapping all that, partner. There ain't going to be none of that. I'm going to tell you that right now. You think them big plays? We let Russell Wilson come to our house last year and throw a damn career high. That man played 20 years in the NFL. No more. We ain't having it. No more. Yeah. Hold on, Joe.
1:15:18Joe Johnson:Hold on, Joe. Hold on. Hey, you know, it's a dude over there. You know, he played for LSU, right? And he played for the New York Giants. Even though we coming off an ACL injury, like, he really liked that. He that boy. You know, he like him at the, like you be saying. How y 'all going to call him?
1:15:33Shannon Sharpe:He's going to take, it's going to take, it's week one, it's going to take him a little while, Ocho. It's going to take him a little while to get... I don't hope they can't stop me because he on my fantasy face, the Yahoo. You... Oh, you got Malik Neighbors? You got Malik Neighbors? Malik Neighbors. I took too long, and they drafted it for me. I got some trades. Is it too late to make trades since they played this first game tonight? Who are you trying to get rid of, Joe? I got somebody. I got to talk to some. You ain't got nobody I want, so you don't need me talking to you about it. He want my kicker, Ocho.
1:16:06Shannon Sharpe:Who you got?
1:16:07Joe Johnson:Brandon Aubrey. You got Aubrey? Oh, yeah. I got Cam Little, I think. I think I got Cam Little. Oh, no, I got McPherson.
1:16:15Shannon Sharpe:Yeah.
1:16:17Joe Johnson:Yeah, we locked in, baby.
1:16:19Shannon Sharpe:Joe, you loaded up a homer. You got the Cowboys defense. You got Dak. That's all I got. That's all I got. You didn't get CD, huh? I didn't get CD. I got Puka. Yeah. Who got CD? Somebody got CD. I might can make... Stevie got it. I'll tell Stevie, man, we might have to, you know what I mean? Hey, man, ain't nobody trade with you. Well, see what I'm saying? That's why I can't tell y 'all my plans. See how y 'all try to sabotage my plans already? If I'd have went to him, y 'all wouldn't have known. Y 'all just see a trade happen. See, I can't tell y 'all nothing. Well, look here. Hold on, Joe. Hold on, hold on.
1:16:53Shannon Sharpe:How you going to make a trade?
1:16:55Joe Johnson:Puka? Yeah, who you going to give him, Joe?
1:16:57Shannon Sharpe:See, if I...
1:16:58Joe Johnson:Hold on. You got to be equal value to do a trade, Joe.
1:17:01Shannon Sharpe:I'm like the Lakers. Because when we discuss trades, nobody else knows. They don't even know we about to get Luka. You know what I mean? Ain't nobody know that. You know what I'm saying? I ain't going to tell y 'all my plans. When y 'all see the transactions, then y 'all be like, whatever. They ain't playing, boy. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. When you see Brandon Auburn averaging about 15 points a game, you say, damn, that boy ain't even playing.
1:17:29Shannon Sharpe:Yeah.
1:17:30Joe Johnson:Yeah. I can't believe football. I can't believe football season is here, man. Hey, Unk and Joe, it felt like I was playing today. Like I was literally, before kickoff, they were singing the Star Spangled Banner. I was sitting there crying at the cigar bar. You was crying? You know, and the waitress, y 'all were crying, Joe. Like, not crying, not bawling, but like tears was coming down. The waitress was like, are you okay? Is everything okay? I said, yeah, yes, ma 'am. I'm just a little emotional because, you know, it's the start of football season and I get like this, you know, sometimes as if I'm still playing.
1:18:00Joe Johnson:She didn't understand it. But, I mean, I can't.
1:18:05Shannon Sharpe:Hey, hey, hey, I kind of understand what you're saying because when basketball season starts, I get like a little, you know, it's like a feeling around that time every year my body gets. You know what I mean? So I get it, Ocho. I get it. I don't feel that. Oh, come on, man. Man, Joe, I've been gone two decades. Hey, Ang, you don't get that feeling no more? The first couple of years when I retired, yes. Yes, you hear the dark spangled banner, you start to get emotional because you know what it's like. I mean, I used to feel that way when the guys start going to training camp, when the Broncos would go to training camp.
1:18:40I'm like, damn, yeah, they're going to camp.
1:18:42Shannon Sharpe:You know, I mean, because I was training, for the first couple of years I still trained like I was going back to training camp. Right, you can't hear it. I was like, man, what am I here on this track running for like this and doing all this? I ain't going to damn well. Hey, hey, I'm on TV with Boom and Dano. But it's hard when you've been wired that way for over a decade, you know what I mean, to turn that off. I don't know how guys just completely turn it off and just don't work out no more. Like, you know what I mean? For me, that's going to always be a part of my life, bro. When you're teeing off and your clients are watching, it's on.
